Forty years celebrated
New waste contractor for Moorabool
By Lachlan Ellis
Moorabool residents have commemorated this year’s Reconciliation Week, attending three Council-run events to mark the occasion and acknowledge the history and culture of Indigenous Australians.
Two flag raising ceremonies were held – the first at Bacchus Marsh’s Village Green on Monday and the second at the Ballan Council Office on Wednesday – as well as a singing and storytelling event at the Lerderderg Library on Friday.
In Ballan, the ceremony was attended by around 30 people, from Councillors to emergency service personnel, and even a group of Ballan Primary School students who helped read out the Acknowledgement of Country.
Council’s Senior Community Engagement & Planning Officer Kristian Brudenell was the MC, with Mayor Cr Rod Ward also speaking and Wadawurrung poet Barry Gilson conducting a smoking ceremony and singing in the Wadawurrung language.
“Reconciliation Week runs from 27 May to 3 June, and it recognises two very significant dates in our history. On 27 May 1967 – it seems incomprehensible now – but a referendum was held that, amongst other things, recognised Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the census. On 3 June 1992 was the famous High Court decision known as the Mabo decision, that recognised Native Title,” Cr Ward said. “Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. It provides an opportunity to reflect and advance our understanding of reconciliation in our community, and Moorabool is committed to continuing to respect and acknowledge our Traditional Owners and community members.”
Barry Gilson shared stories and the history of the region, including some of the Wadawurrung names for parts of Moorabool and surrounds, and what they mean.
“I welcome all my ancestors from the past. Without them we wouldn’t be here. It’s said there were about 4,000 of us
before colonisation, 25 family groups around our countryside – we go all the way to Waubra which means ‘turn back’, Aireys Inlet, all the way to Werribee, and ‘Ballaarat’, meaning ‘elbow resting against the fire’ and ‘arat’ meaning ‘at home’,” Mr Gilson said.
“This is an important week where we can share our histo -
ries and our culture, and discuss things to make a bit of a conversation about where we’re going as a people. Thank you all for coming today, lots of love from both me and my ancestors.”

Dogs make sense for conservation
Thanks to hiker rescuers
Police have thanked twin brothers who came to the rescue of lost hikers at the Werribee Gorge State Park last year, providing each with a certificate commending their efforts.
On May 29 last year, brothers Luke and Glen Sellner safely located two groups of hikers who were lost in the park.
The experienced walkers had just returned from a hike when they located an elderly woman in a distressed state at the Meyers Road car park, and though the woman spoke only limited English, the brothers quickly realised something was wrong and deduced her family had not returned from their walk.
The pair split up and quickly set off to locate the lost family, a mother and father and their 7-year-old son. At about the same time, a different group – a 21-yearold autistic man and his 50-year-old carer – also become lost in the gorge.
The carer contacted Triple 000 about 5.30pm, and a Public Order Response Team was dispatched to locate them.
By chance, the two lost parties came together in the dark, and were extremely relieved when Luke appeared from the darkness and was able to guide them to safety.
On May 29 this year, the Sellner brothers were thanked by police from Transit and Public Safety Command, and the walkers they helped rescue, with the brothers being presented with a Divisional Commendation for their actions that night.

Dogs are trained for a variety of jobs including detecting drugs, contraband, exotic foods and plants but, have you heard about conservation dogs; they exist and coming to Moorabool.
A family friendly Conservation Dogs Workshop will be held at Mt Wallace in June, and it’s free.
These canines have highly sensitive noses that can sniff out everything from invasive weeds to wildlife detection.
Hosted by Moorabool Catchment Landcare Group, coordinator Jackson Cass said the dogs are very important for the conservation of not only plants, but endangered and near extinct species.
“I would say as threatened species continue to decline, the use of new innovative approaches including dogs, drones and AI are very important in stopping the decline of threatened species and ultimately improving their conservation status.”
The workshop will be delivered by Fiona Jackson from Skylos Ecology, who work with detection dogs to provide adaptive detection solutions for environmental projects spanning the agriculture, biosecurity, conservation and renewable energy sectors across Australia.
“Conservation dogs can sniff out target scents that are naked to the human eye, underground, in plants or even under water,” Mr Cass said.
“Skylos Ecology utilises this incredibly accurate and sensitive instrument to collect data for environmentally based projects.”
Mr Cass said the event will begin at 10am and run for roughly an hour and a half with afternoon tea provided.
“I encourage anyone that is interested to register for this free family friendly event now to secure your spot and learn more about conservation dogs.”
There are currently five working dogs ‘on the books’ with Skylos Ecology, Jimmy, Rexy, Sonny, Raasay and Oakley. Their abilities have a wide range of skills including working on threatened species re-introduction projects, fox management projects, wild dog monitoring projects, as well as his regular wind farm surveying.
Their target scents vary for each dog and overall include, fox scat, dens and scavenge sites; wild dog scat and scavenge sites; bird and bat carcasses (wind farm); tiger quoll; alligator weed; invasive grass; Powerful Owl; Kowari; feral cat scat; and koala.
Mr Cass said Skylos Ecology and their dogs are able to be hired by landholders.
“… if the project is appropriate, they can be contacted through their website https://www.skylosecology.com/”.
The Conservation Dogs Workshop will be held on Saturday 24 June from 10am - 12pm at the Mt Wallace Hall. This is a free event and to register your attendance, got to the events.humanitix.com website and search ‘conservation-dogs-workshop’.

Forty years celebrated
By Lachlan Ellis
A local SES branch has celebrated its 40th anniversary, launching a book comprised of stories, photos, and memories from its time serving the community.
While the VICSES Bacchus Marsh Unit celebrated the anniversary itself on 19 November last year, its 40th anniversary book ‘Lost in the Gorge and Other Emergencies’ was officially launched on Sunday 21 May this year. Compiled by local author and SES volunteer Lyn Purcell,
the book takes a look back at the branch’s long history since it was founded back in 1982.
Unit Controller Bill Robson said recent events had shown how important the SES’ training was.
“It’s when we have a major incident like the Exford School bus crash that we realise all our training is worthwhile. The unit had twelve members who worked alongside the other emergency services to assist the children who were trapped in the bus,” Mr Robson said.
The book launch was attended by local SES members and

friends of the Unit, as well as Tim Wiebusch (Chief Officer Operations VICSES), Michaela Settle (State Member for Eureka), Cr Rod Ward (Mayor of Moorabool Shire) and Steve McGhie (State Member for Melton).
Ms Purcell said the Unit wanted to share with its community a picture of its service over the years from 1982 to 2022, rather than waiting for the usual 50-year celebrations.
The book is available from the local newsagent in Main Street Bacchus Marsh, or from the SES unit any Tuesday training night (7.30pm – 9.30 pm) for $30 a copy.
Owners of residential dwellings within 4km of the wind farm are invited to participate in a landscape and visual screening program, designed to reduce the potential visual impacts of the project for our closest neighbours.
All agreed works are undertaken by Moorabool Wind Farm at no cost to dwelling owners.
The program is open until 30th June 2023 for Moorabool North and 30th Sept 2023 for Moorabool South. Please contact us if you have not previously participated and would like to register your interest.

Card fraud at supermarket
Police have put a call out for help identifying the man in this picture, who they believe can assist in their enquiries.
A Victoria Police member contacted the Moorabool News last week, asking for help identifying the man in relation to the use of a stolen bank card. “On the evening of Wednesday 24 May 2023, a stolen bank card was used to purchase goods at the IGA supermarket, Ballan. Depicted is a male that can assist police with their enquiries,” the spokesperson told the Moorabool News.

Parliament Prize now open
Entries for this year’s Parliament Prize competition are now open for Victorian students from Grade 5 to Year 12.
The popular competition asks students to consider the issues that are important in their own communities and record a 90-second video of a statement they would make to parliament if they were an MP.
Students can win cash prizes for themselves and their schools, with three entry categories: Grades 56, Years 7-9 and Years 10-12.
A prize of $500 and a commemorative trophy will be awarded to the first-placed entry in each category. There will also be prizes of $250 to the second-placed entries and $125 to the third-placed entries in each age group.
An award of $1,000 will be made to each first-placed student's school, which will ideally be used to promote civics and citizenship and law-related education within these
schools, at the schools’ discretion.
Last year the Parliament Prize received 675 entries from students at 145 schools across Victoria. And, with more than 390 unique topics raised in these entries, Members of Parliament took a great interest in what students in their local areas had to say.
Examples included the cost of living, gender equality, health and mental health, animal rights and education.
To enter and view the full terms and conditions, visit the competition’s website at vicparl.news/parlprize
Entries are due by 5pm, Friday 16 June 2023.
The winners will be announced via the Victorian Parliament’s website and social media in early August, and will be presented with their prizes in a special ceremony at Parliament House on a date to be advised.

Two new outdoor gallery spaces will soon be launched by Moorabool Shire Council, brightening up Ballan and Bacchus Marsh while also providing exposure for our local artists.
As part of the Moorabool Arts Pathways Program (MAPP), Council has created two ‘MAPP Up in Lights’ galleries – one at Ballan’s McLean Reserve and one at Bacchus Marsh’s Village Green – supporting artists to exhibit their works.
Though still a work in progress, when finished the Ballan gallery will feature five displays and the Bacchus Marsh gallery will feature nine, with the display boxes to be lit up at night.
Mayor Cr Rod Ward said the galleries would be ideal for visual artists, as the display boxes are two-sided, and are also perfect for 3D creatives and makers of small works.
“These two new exhibition opportunities will bring lasting

Dear Editor, Victoria is going broke as families and businesses are punished for Labor’s incompetence.
The Andrews Labor Government’s budget of rising debt, higher taxes and fewer jobs will make life even harder for every single Victorian.
Under Labor, Victoria is broke with state debt projected to climb to $171.4 billion by 2026-27 and interest payments to more than double to $22 million a day.
Under Labor, life is getting harder for Victorian families with higher rents, increases in land tax, hikes in school fees and 32 major infrastructure projects shelved including the Melbourne Airport Rail Link, Geelong Fast Rail and North East Link.
Under Labor, Victorian businesses will pay for Labor’s incompetence with higher payroll tax and a 42 per cent increase in WorkCover premiums, placing jobs at risk across the state.
This budget fails to offer any relief for Victorians when they need it the most and will put Victoria further behind the rest of Australia as a place to work, invest and raise a family.
It will inflict more pain on Victorians already experiencing unprecedented cost of living pressures.
It’s the wrong budget at the wrong time. Labor wants to blame COVID, the Reserve Bank and the Federal Government for this brutal budget but only it can take responsibility for this debt driven disaster.

Drug driver convicted
reason for driving with more than the prescribed alcohol in her breath, she said, ‘I was just driving home’, and in relation to driving with drugs in her system, she said, ‘I didn’t think it was still in my system’,” Leading Senior Constable Smith said.
Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt asked Ms Vogel if that was a fair summary, to which she agreed, with the exception that she had been in Australia for four years.
Ms Vogel apologised and said her behaviour at the time was “not in my nature”.
By Lachlan Ellis
A driver with drugs in her system, at almost twice the legal Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC), has been suspended from driving and ordered to pay over $2,000 in fines.
Devon Vogel appeared in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates’ Court on Friday 2 June, with Police Prosecutor Leading Senior Constable Smith telling the court she was found to have committed multiple offences when pulled over last October.
“Police observed the accused driving a Toyota wagon in easterly direction along Western Freeway at Pentland Hills at 11.45 am on 30 October 2022. The registration was checked, which confirmed that it had expired on 11 April 2022, and had been cancelled. The accused was subsequently intercepted, and was asked to provide her licence, and state her name and address,” Leading Senior Constable Smith said.
“The accused stated that she held a current United Kingdom licence and could not produce it. She stated her name as Devon Rachel Vogel, and she had been residing in Victoria for the past six years, and had failed to obtain a Victorian driver licence.”
A preliminary breath test found alcohol present in Ms Vogel’s breath, with an evidentiary breath test at Bacchus Marsh Police Station resulting in a BAC of 0.098.
“The informant then required the accused to undergo an oral fluid test. The sample provided indicated the presence of an illicit substance, being MDMA. When asked about her licence, she said, ‘I wasn’t aware I had to’ in relation to not having a Victorian licence, in relation to driving an unregistered car she said, ‘I didn’t know it was unregistered’, her
“On the night before the incident I was at a 30th birthday party where we’d been drinking, and I’d made the poor decision to take MDMA. I’d had sleep, and when I woke up, I had food and water, so I was under the impression I was doing the right thing before getting behind the wheel, but now in hindsight I realise I should’ve left it for a lot longer before driving,” she said.
She added that she thought at the time that she could drive on her UK licence, but had applied for a Victorian driver licence since the incident.
She also failed to notify VicRoads of a change in address from Warragul to Melbourne, and thus never received paperwork regarding her car being unregistered, admitting that was “poor organisational skills on my behalf”.
Though he acknowledged Ms Vogel had a clean driving record in Victoria, Magistrate Klestadt said that “is of relatively low value” given her short time living in the state.
“Laws in Victoria about driving with alcohol in your system, or prescribed drugs, are perhaps some of the most severe in the English-speaking world. But the reason for the laws is very clear. It’s about safety, and whilst you may not have grown up in Victoria where there has been focus on drinking driving and drug driving for years now, you must be taken to have been aware of some extent to your obligations while driving a motor vehicle, to not put yourself and others at risk by driving with alcohol or illicit substances in your body,” the Magistrate said.
“You will be convicted and fined $2,150. On the first charge of driving with both alcohol and drugs in your system, any licence will be cancelled, and you are disqualified from driving for a period of 12 months from now. You won’t be able to be re-licenced, or apply to get your licence back, without undertaking behavioural change or driving education with VicRoads.”
Public assistance sought
Victoria Police have asked for help from the community, to identify a man believed to have information related to vehicle damage and property theft.
A VicPol member contacted the Moorabool News asking for public assistance.
“We are seeking to identify the male in the car pictured, a white Mazda Bravo with a tray.”
On Sunday 21 May 2023 between 3:30 and 4:00am multiple cars at the Ballan Railway Station had damage to key locks, and it is known property was stolen from one car. Anyone with information is urged to call the Ballan Police Station on 5368 1303 or Crimestoppers 1800 333 000.

Easter gift delivered
By Lachlan Ellis
A Moorabool hospital has received not Easter eggs, but a donation of over $5,000, from a volunteer-run festival this year.
The Bacchus Marsh EasterFest raised a whopping $5,555.77 this year, with a cheque for that amount presented to the Bacchus Marsh Hospital’s Urgent Care Department last month.
The tally for this year’s even tips the total donation tally for the Bacchus Marsh EasterFest over $50,000 – the event was first run in 2015, and has since then provided a total of $51,769.26 to the Bacchus Marsh Hospital.
While a last-minute change of location was required due to inclement weather and risk of damaging Maddingley Park, and the Easter egg hunts were unable to be held this year, a fantastic event was still run. In fact, patrons enjoyed the biggest egg haul to date, with everyone who bought Easter egg hunts receiving double the normal amount: over a kilo of eggs.
The market, and activities such as the animal farm, face painting, crafts, easter bonnet parade, and performances were all still able to be held despite the dreary conditions.
Divisional Director Emergency, Medicine and Access at Western Health, Patriece Shelly, thanked the EasterFest volunteers for their ongoing support of the Bacchus Marsh Hospital.
“On behalf of Western Health, I would like to express my gratitude to the Bacchus Marsh EasterFest volunteers and community sponsors. This generous donation enabled the purchase of a defibrillator for our urgent care centre, supporting our staff to provide best care for the Bacchus Marsh community at a time when they need it most,” Ms Shelly told the Moorabool News.
“We at Western Health are very thankful for these amazing fundraising efforts and for the continued support each and every year at EasterFest.”

Dear Editor, Victorian’s decaying roads network will deteriorate further after the Labor Government slashed another 25 per cent from the road maintenance budget.
It is an alarming trend, with Labor punishing Victorians with a $380 million reduction in annual spending on road maintenance since 2020 – a massive 45 per cent cut.
Victorians know their roads are appalling and Labor’s cuts will make it worse.
Whether its potholes on freeways, broken rims and crumbling shoulders, our roads are in a mess and it’s Victorians who are suffering due to Labor’s financial incompetence.
With the Treasurer also conducting a massive raid on funds from the Transport Accident Commission (TAC), spending on road safety will also be curtailed at a time when the road toll is increasing.
As of budget day there were 124 deaths on Victorian roads in 2023, up a shocking 30 per cent on this time last year.
Danny O’Brien
Shadow Minister for Roads and Road Safety
No plates, no licence
rian probationary driver license. Police observed there were no P plates displayed on the front or back of her vehicle. She was issued with two infringement notices. When she was spoken to, in relation to speeding she said, ‘I didn’t realise’, in relation to the P plates she said, ‘This is not my vehicle’.”
Ms Pabbi told the Magistrate she was renting the car, and she had changed jobs and started taking a taxi to work.
“It was a rental car. I didn’t have my own car….it was difficult for me to travel on V/Line as it sometimes got cancelled last minute. I got a rental car because I was working many shifts as a nurse,” she said.
“I wasn’t getting much sleep at the time, I was feeling very stressed.”

A probationary driver will be off the road for months and has been ordered to pay hundreds of dollars in fines, for speeding and failing to display P plates.
Silky Pabbi appeared at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates’ Court on Friday 2 June, pleading guilty to speeding without P plates on the car she was driving in Gordon earlier this year.
Magistrate Jonathan Klestadt heard that Ms Pabbi was detected travelling more than 25 kilometres an hour over the limit, which carries an automatic licence suspension of three months.
“On 7 January 2023 at 1.30 pm, police observed the accused driving in a westerly direction on the Western Highway in Gordon between the Gordon on-ramp and Ormond Rd at a fast rate of speed. Police activated a prescribed speed detector device, which detected the accused’s speed as 138 kilometres an hour. That section of road is subject to 110 km/h speed limit, with the alleged speed being 136 kilometres an hour,” Leading Senior Constable Smith said.
“The accused was intercepted, and she provided her Victo -
Magistrate Klestadt decided not to exceed the minimum licence suspension for Ms Pabbi’s speeding range, but warned her that the laws around speeding and displaying P plates “are there for a reason”.
“Given that the speed was more than 25 kilometres an hour over the speed limit, I have no discretion…but I will not exceed the minimum of three months. It’s clear that driving at that speed is too fast…26 kilometres an hour over the speed limit, there are serious safety concerns, because you’re travelling much faster than vehicles on the road should be.
“Similarly, P plates are matter of safety, they’re a way of indicating to other drivers that you are inexperienced, and you may do something unexpected…and they should give you a bit more time or space to enhance safety,” the Magistrate said.
“I take into account your plea of guilty and there will be hardship involved in being without a licence, but that’s what punishment for these kinds of offences is meant to do, be an inconvenience. It’s meant to make you think twice about doing something again.”
On top of the three-month licence suspension, Ms Pabbi was also ordered to pay a fine of $500.

New waste contractor for Moorabool
A new contractor has been appointed to take over the Shire’s waste collection services, after the manager of the former contractor retired.
From 1 July, JJ Richards will be the collection contractor for kerbside garbage, recycling, and green waste.
The company has been appointed the contract for 10 years, plus two five-year extension options.
Manager Mark Beevis lives in the Shire and has recruited locally, so many of the drivers who will service the new contract also live in Moorabool Shire.
Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Rod Ward said it was fantastic
to have a “local link” with the new contractor.
“Our previous contractor had done a fantastic job since 1994, with the manager now entering well-earned retirement, so we’re pleased we had JJ Richards apply for the new contract,” Cr Ward said.
“Pick-ups will continue as normal from one week to the next with no interruptions, but we ask the community to be patient during the settling-in phase for new drivers.”
New designs and new waste collection trucks will be part of the change-over, which Cr Ward said “are very eyecatching, and show off imagery of the natural beauty we
have within the Shire”.
He also thanked outgoing contractors KG Coy and Sons on behalf of everyone at Council, for their hard work serving the community.
“We’d like to acknowledge the significant contribution they have made servicing the Moorabool Shire community for more than 30 years,” Cr Ward said.
“We sincerely appreciate their efficient, courteous customer service, the level of detail and accountability they have demonstrated, and the way they have interacted with Council and the community over this time.”
250 for ‘Kaz’
By Lachlan Ellis
A 250-gamer for the Bacchus Marsh Cobras says she never planned to play so many games of netball, but a love of the club and the game has kept her going.
Karen Pawlowicz played her 250th game in the red, yellow and black on Saturday 27 May, with the D Grade Cobras side getting the job done 28 – 27 against Sunbury.
Ms Pawlowicz said it was an honour and a surprise to see so many people come out to celebrate the milestone.
“250 games, or any milestone for that matter, was never something I set out to do. I play netball because I love the game and love spending time with other people who love it too. I was nervous but quietly excited to be sharing the day with my family, friends and so many people from the Cobra family, but trying to keep it under wraps and treat the game like any other game. Also, I think a little amazed and a little overwhelmed that so many people took the time to come and acknowledge the milestone and/or watch the game,” she told the Moorabool News.
Ms Pawlowicz has been playing netball with the Cobras since about 2005, but has also umpired one or two games a week at senior level, and has also spent years coaching.
“When you join the Cobras, you become part of the Cobra family. Our children spent a lot of Saturdays and then Sundays (when they began to play) at Maddingley Park. They were very lucky to have so many Cobra Mums, Cobra Aunties and Cobra big sisters. As they grew older, they have made many lifelong friends within the club, as have Frank and I,” she said.
“Being involved with and playing netball is one of my happy places. What more could I wish for on a Saturday, except to play the game I love with my Cobra family?”
And as you’d expect a member of the 2013 premiership side to say, that great victory is her favourite memory of her netball career.
“To have worked together all season with a group of teammates and to have it all come together in the way you hoped to achieve that premiership goal is pure magic,” she said.

Warm, dry winter ahead
The Bureau of Meteorology is forecasting a high chance of below average rainfall for large areas of Australia for June to August, along with warmer than usual temperatures.
The winter long-range forecast shows warmer than usual daytime temperatures are likely almost everywhere, and warmer nights are also likely for many areas, with cooler nights for western New South Wales, parts of southern Queensland, eastern South Australia, and southern areas of the Northern Territory.
Bureau of Meteorology Extended Prediction Technical Lead
Catherine Ganter said there was a high chance of below average rainfall, particularly in southern areas of Australia.
“Southern areas have at least twice the normal chance of winter rainfall falling in the bottom 20% per cent of records,”
Ms Ganter said.
Ms Ganter said with drier conditions forecast, the risk of frost during winter, which is most common for southern and central Australia, was heightened for inland southern areas.
“Even though average minimum and maximum temperatures are expected to be warmer than usual this winter, there will still be times of cold wintry conditions. This can increase the frost risk when there are still nights that are clear of cloud cover,” she said.
In northern Australia, the dry season continues from May until September, and much of the region experiences very low rainfall during this time as well as heightened bushfire risk.
Australia’s fire agencies have identified that while most of Australia has normal bushfire potential during winter,
areas of above normal bushfire risk include a large area of the Northern Territory and pockets of New South Wales and north-western South Australia.
Fire potential depends on many factors including weather and climate, fuel abundance, recent fire history and firefighting resources available in the area.
The winter long-range forecast reflects several climate influences including:
• the chance of El Niño forming in the Pacific Ocean
• signs of a positive Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) forming in winter
• warmer than average ocean temperatures around Australia.
The Bureau remains at El Niño WATCH, which means around double the usual chance of an El Niño event.
While the models show it’s very likely that the tropical Pacific Ocean temperatures will reach El Niño levels during winter, a shift in the tropical atmosphere is also needed for the Bureau to declare an El Niño event.
Ms Ganter said any change to the El Niño WATCH status would not change the long-range forecast, which is already trending towards warm and dry for most of Australia.
The Bureau’s Autumn Summary shows that the country’s autumn rainfall was around 10 per cent below the 1961 –1990 average, this May was the country’s second driest since records began in 1900, and this autumn was the coolest in Australia since 2012.

Transatlantic Sessions concert
Get your dancing shoes on and come on down to this footstomping cracker of a concert at St. Martin's Chapel in Blackwood!
The Transatlantic Sessions concert will feature 3 great bands - bringing you music from across the globe from Ireland to Appalachia.
The Blue Mount String Band is comprised of members Nick Dear, Janet Dear and Philomena Carroll. These three accomplished musicians have been making music together for decades in many different iterations. A shared love of North American Stringband music has sustained their ongoing inspiration to delve into their enormous repertoire, from Stephen Foster and the Civil War and onwards to present-day song and tunesmiths.
Between the trio, they play fiddle, mandolin, guitar, banjo, and double bass. Expect a wide variety of Bluegrass, Old Time, Cajun and Country blues tunes and songs that will have you tapping your toes or shedding a tear!
Is the Big Man Within? is a brand-new outfit that emerged from the Sunday music sessions at the much loved Radio Springs Hotel. The band comprises Kit Joyce on accordion, Gerry Daly on guitar and bodhran, and Nicola Strating on fiddle and bouzouki. They play mostly Irish trad with a few Scottish tunes and a song or two thrown in for good measure. Newbury Fog are Nara and Karina Demasson, an old-time duo from the Central Highlands, Victoria. Nara has played in diverse bands and music traditions, focusing here on his love of old-time music and fiddle tunes. Karina has spent many years absorbed by old time music playing banjo and guitar at sessions and festivals. The raw honest energy of old-time tunes expresses the deep love of music that they share. Newbury Fog play traditional songs, fiddle tunes, country ballads and rural music.

Wounded Devils upset Bloods
Darley Football Club
By Todd Whelan
Darley moved to the top of the BFNL table with a droughtbreaking 11-point win on the road over reigning Premiers Melton.
Round 2, 2017 (2226 days) was the last time the Devils celebrated in song with a win over the competition benchmarks. Despite both sides missing key personnel, the highly anticipated top of the table meet lived up to all expectations, with numerous lead changes and special highlights reels amid ailing conditions. While the rain stayed away, the MacPherson Park tricky breeze, hard deck and sticky “middle” would ask questions of all players and, their ability to execute the fundamentals.
When the Bloods went 15 points up six minutes into the third term with three unanswered goals, Aaron Tymms’ boys looked well on their way to a 17th straight win at home.
But a resilient Devils army, led by fearless utility Billy Myers (three goals), progressive young mid Adam Azzopardi and rock-solid defender Matthew Brett were able to arrest momentum into the breeze, before the visitors were duly rewarded with back-to-back goals and within five points at the final change.
The Bloods were left lamenting missed opportunities in front of goal. From the six-minute mark of the third term and looking in control, the misfiring Bloods frustrated fans with nine straight behinds before falling short.
“Bad kicking is bad footy,” said coach Tymms.
In fairness, the Devils had two “posters” of their own, but the 11.10 to 8.17 score line is a true indicator in the difference of efficiencies.
Devils coach Dan Jordan had to wait 393 days between his first and second meets with the Bloods, and remained grounded in the aftermath.
“While we’ve still plenty to work on, I was proud of the boys’ efforts to execute our plan and stick to it, particularly with a few injured.” he said.
Important Devils midfielder Luther Baker will sweat on scans learning the severity of a nasty hamstring injury sustained in the final quarter, while Myers and Brett Bewley will welcome the Kings Birthday bye after looking hampered late in the day.
The Bloods were unable to get it done without midfield duo Jack Walker (concussion) and Lachie Watkins (illness), while Liam Carter (leg strain) left the field near the halfway mark
and took no further part.
In more positive news for the winners, Myers, Adam Azzopardi and Matthew Brett’s lead roles were well supported by an entourage of willing Devils desperate for a seventh straight win on the road and conquering their six-year nemesis.
Former Captain Shane Page played a crucial role with his decision making, knowing when to defend and when to attack – his sureness aerially and efficiency by foot was a driving constant for the Devils when they were seemingly under the pump.
New season addition Billy Sullivan played his best game for his new club, his intensity and ability to square or even win the outnumber in tight space was crucial.
Lively forward Will Johnson (three goals) is seeing impact reward for his increase in fitness levels and brought X-factor, while Riley Matricardi and Dylan Bishop looked busy and hellbent keeping the ball locked inside the Devils forward 50.
Central Highlands Football League
RESULTS – ROUND 7
Free running Andy Azzopardi and ex-Bloods inside mid Matt Denham provided plenty of spark in the second half to play significant roles either side of the contest.
Defender Zane Lehuray was solid once again under immense pressure, often de-
nying the Bloods a maximum score on the last line. Needless to add, experienced duo Bewley and Baker shouldered plenty of the load in the trenches before the jubilation and some degrees of relief in victory could be realised.

The U19’s had a great win on Saturday, despite the wet conditions. Collectively worked well together to get a good percentage boost, with transitions down the court and structures running smoothly.
E grade came out of the gates strong in one of their most consistent performances to date, with their shooting combination connecting nicely. Mids and defenders built up pressure coming from behind to lead at 3/4 time. Unfortunately, unforced errors in the end, saw them lose.
D grade started strong against Melton this week and managed to keep the intensity and consistency up throughout the game. Every player played their role and finally came away with the win.
C grade had a tough game today. Goalers worked nicely together receiving well-placed passes from the mid courts. A good result.
After a slow start, B grade came out firing from quarter time. The defensive end took charge leaving the Melton goalers looking for answers. The mid-court lifted their intensity for the remaining three quarters backing up our defenders and goalers. Sarah and Bridie worked seamlessly throughout and hardly missed a goal. Congratulation to Bridie on her first B grade match.
A grade continued their undefeated season with another convincing win over Melton.

Round 7 was another home game for the Bacchus Marsh Tigers taking on Guild. A win would see the Tigers clear on top of the ladder heading into the break.
After a slow start the Bacchus Marsh bats came alive with 18 hits throughout the game bringing in 13 runs in what was a good day out for the Tigers winning 13-3.
Sam DeLeon, Cooper Wallace, and Jon Bell were best for the Tigers.

COBRAS CHALK UP OUR FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON
Coach Jason Williams said “Well, it feels really nice to be writing a review 24 hours after a win. Our first win for 2023 was a gutsy one. The game for the most part was a tight and heavily contested arm wrestle all the way to the final siren. Lake Wendouree threw everything they had at us and to our credit we were able to absorb the pressure and still produce some really resilient and courageous footy. While we didn’t play the most beautiful brand of footy it’s important to be able win games in different ways. At 3 quarter time we spoke about the need to dig deep and win the game on effort and owning moments and for the first time this year we consistently owned our moments. Days like yesterday will give our group belief and confidence that they have the ability to win and compete for 120 minutes of footy. Finally I would like to thank all the loyal Bacchus Marsh people, thank you for travelling to support us, thank you for volunteering to help, and thank you for welcoming me into this great club. I hope our guys made you proud yesterday and I hope yesterday fills you with optimism and excitement for the direction our footy club is heading in.
U18 WOMEN’S INTERLEAGUE
Next weekend is the Queens Birthday bye weekend in the Ballarat Football Netball League. However there will still be football to watch at Maddingley Park. The Ballarat League U18 Women’s rep side will take on the Riddell League next Friday night June 9th at 7.00PM. Come down and support the girls from the best place to watch footy in the Marsh, The Deck.
MND BIG FREEZE
Don’t forget the MND Big Freeze, Bacchus Marsh style on Saturday June 17. The ice cubes are cooling already so the pool will be icy cold. The latest sliders for this year’s big freeze have just been announced, Nick Myrianthis and Neal Morgan will take the plunge in memory of Phil O’Keefe from Greendale. Also up are Jacinta Reid, Alison Hetherington and Flynn Gianni. It’s for a great cause and is great entertainment. So come along donate some money to this great cause, buy a MND 9 beanie, watch games of footy or why not do them all.
SPONSORS DAY
The club is saying thanks to our generous sponsors on Saturday June 17. Full details are yet to be released, but a tasty meal, cool drinks and some great footy are assured. All the Cobra community, please make yourselves aware of our sponsors and give them a call first when you have a job or service you need.

Cobras savour first win
The Cobras top end talent brigade has nurtured a largely inexperienced group to its first win of the season under new Coach Jason Williams.
Jake Owen (four goals) was the star of the show, claiming best on ground honours ahead of Alex Porter, Jack Parente, Callum Smith, Xavier Jenks and returning Rhys McNay for his first game at the level this year. Veteran Tyson Shea had some 20 plus tackles at the coalface, while ruckman Luke Goetz recorded in excess of 70 hit-outs to deny Lakers big man Shane Finlayson his way around stoppage.
Scores were level at half time in a low scoring affair before the Cobras added five goals to the lakers three in the second
half to finish in front on the final siren much to the delight of the Cobras loyal band of travelling supporters. For the Lakers, it was a game they would consider as one ‘let slip’ given the nature of the Cobras season on the win/ loss front.
Jubilant scenes of smile and song engulfed the Cobras touring party who were just rapt to be walking away with the Premiership points. Just how many Cobras ended up in the nucleus of the victory circle, celebrating a first win is a story for another day.
WHAT THE COACHES SAID:
Jason Williams (B/Marsh) – “Tough game. We didn’t play as well or as clean as weeks gone by. The Lakers threw every-
thing they could at us and in the end it was just a game of effort and some individual moments that went our way. Good to win and proud that we did in the hard way, great reward.”
Jack Fitzpatrick (Lakers) – “The team that deserved to win, won the game. Well done Bacchus...”
