A Moorabool cyclist has won gold for the second time in a row at a recent event in Ballarat, becoming the first ever to do so.
Twenty one-year-old Graeme Frislie from Bacchus Marsh finished first in the National U23 Championships Criterium on Friday 6 January – the first person to ever defend the title.
Mr Frislie, who also won bronze with the Australian Men’s 4000m Team Pursuit team at the Commonwealth Games last
year, said it was a thrill to have won the event once again, and continue his run of solid results.
“It was pretty cool, I got told it was actually the first time that anyone’s ever done it, so that was pretty special,” he told the Moorabool News.
“I was going into the race with some pretty good form, so I knew if I got to the finish in a decent fashion I should have a fair shot at winning, but you never really know until you cross the finish line.”
Competing in the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris would be a
dream come true, Frislie says – but he’s not getting ahead of himself.
“On the track, it’s definitely a target for me to reach that level, but I still have a little ways to go. There’s a lot of stuff that can happen between now and then,” Mr Frislie said.
“I’m actually in Adelaide at the moment for the Tour Down Under, so I’ve been getting ready for that. I’ve been pretty busy.”
The Tour Down Under began on Friday 13 January, and will conclude on Sunday 22 January.

experience in both competition management and understanding of the needs and challenges of volunteers and community clubs,” he said.
The Ballarat Football Netball League (BFNL) has announced the appointment of a new Football Competition Manager, following the resignation of Scott Carey last year.
Matt Newton will replace the long-serving Carey, who stood down from the role of Football Competition Manager in October last year.
Following Mr Carey’s resignation, the league undertook an administration restructure. After a recruitment process, Newton accepted the role, and commenced on Monday 16 January.
General Manager Scott Anwyl said Mr Newton was most recently employed at Basketball Ballarat.

With a new agreement signed with the MCDFNL, Tom McGregor will continue as Operations Manager and will further expend his management role by taking on the operations of the BFLWomens competition.
Mr Anwyl said this will ensure “more time and resources are dedicated to expending and building on the BFLW through 2023 and beyond.”
Gemma Murphy continues as netball manager for both the senior and junior BFNL competitions.
“Season 2023 will see exciting developments driven by Murphy in the pathway program to ensure that BFNL netball is the premier elite talent pathway for aspiring juniors,” Mr Anwyl said.
“The expertise of staff to support league clubs, the BFNL is well-placed to continue as one of the premier competitions in both the region, and country Victoria as a whole.”

“I don’t know what it is, if people are running out of money…we had two thefts in one day yesterday. We never see the money back. We fill out the reports, give it to the police, and give them the footage. But do we ever see the money back? No,” APCO Bacchus Marsh’s owner told the Moorabool News.

Theft of petrol from local service stations has become a growing problem, and operators are having to wear the cost – sometimes hundreds of dollars a week.
APCO Bacchus Marsh has been one of the hardest hit by petrol theft, with its owner, who asked to be left unnamed, stating that last Wednesday (11 January), around $400 to $500 of petrol had already been stolen that week.
One thief even drove off without paying
“It’s frustrating, we’re trying to run our business. We’re the owners, the franchisees, so we still have to pay head office…we’re paying out of pocket. There’s been about seven thefts over the past month – last month wasn’t too bad, but once this month started it got really bad.”
Sergeant Michael Watts from the Bacchus Marsh Police Station said fuel theft was an issue that police are working hard to try and resolve.
“Bacchus Marsh Police have received reports of recent incidents of theft of petrol from service stations in the Bacchus Marsh area and are currently investigating these matters,” Sergeant Watts said.
“All service station operators are encouraged to report any petrol thefts to the police and provide CCTV footage of the incident to assist with the police investigation.”
If you recognise any of the petrol thieves shown here, or on the APCO Bacchus Marsh Facebook page, contact Bacchus Marsh Police on 5366 4500.

Fiskville farmer in new role
By Lachlan Ellis
A Moorabool sheep farmer has been appointed to a new role within the state’s leading farmer advocacy group, and says he’s keen to get started.
Scott Young runs around 2,000 ewes on his property in Fiskville, and was announced as the new Livestock Group President at the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) just before Christmas last year.
Having served as Vice President of the VFF Livestock Group since October 2020, Mr Young says he’s keen to step up to the top role within the Group, and continue advocating for farmers across the state.
“I feel that we need a voice, and the VFF is that voice for advocacy and policy for Victorian farmers. I’ve been passionate about that for quite a few years now, so I wanted to continue advocating for farmers all across Victoria,” Mr Young told the Moorabool News.
“I’m excited for the challenge ahead, and obviously I’m just going to have to manage my farming interests with my advocacy work in the VFF. It’s a great opportunity to advocate on farming-related issues…the main issues
at the moment are the Government’s new Animal Welfare Act, biosecurity, maintaining market share and profitability for Victorian farmers, and making sure we’re on the front foot with animal pain relief, showing what a great job we do with that and showing we’re committed to looking after our animals as best we can.”
VFF Acting Returning Officer Brendan Tatham congratulated all successful incumbent office bearers as the future leaders of Victoria’s peak agricultural advocacy body.
“The VFF would like to acknowledge and thank all candidates for the positions and encourages them to continue to contribute to the VFF and the farming community into the future,” Mr Tatham said.
“The VFF also thanks all outgoing office bearers for their contributions over the years and helping to facilitate succession in the VFF to the next generation of VFF leaders.”
Peter Star was elected to replace Mr Young in the VFF Livestock Vice President role, while Emma Germano and Danyel Cucinotta were re-elected as the VFF’s general President and Vice President respectively.
The program is carried out periodically, and is an important routine maintenance program to ensure the drinking water we supply to customers continues to be safe to drink.
During this period, we will be temporarily altering the method of disinfection used to treat the water and flushing the water mains network.
Some customers may temporarily experience a slight difference in taste and odour, however the water will continue to meet required drinking water standards.

Soldiers Avenue explored
By Lachlan Ellis
A local historian and author has shared her findings on a “lost” Avenue of Honour in Barrys Reef, which was established over a century ago, after reading the story in the Moorabool News (Jan 10).
Margot Hitchcock will mark 50 years of membership at the Blackwood & District Historical Society this year, and says she’s eager to see the ‘Soldiers Avenue’ at Barrys Reef restored.
“I’ve written books on the history of Blackwood, so I’m passionate about the history of Barrys Reef. The late Allan Hall, who was President of the Historical Society, took me up to Barrys Reef one day and showed me where the Avenue of Honour trees were,” Ms Hitchcock told the Moorabool News.
“According to the research I did on the Barrys Reef elms, a teacher, Eleanor Taylor, planted them with the help of students and parents on Arbour Day in 1919. There was only two that survived. But the trees that are there now must have been planted some other time, because according to the research only two elm trees survived.”
Ms Hitchcock was sent a photo of the original trees planted in the Soldiers Avenue by a person related to the Goodge family, who lived in Barrys Reef at the time.
“The photo had all these trees that were planted, and had wooden surrounds around them protecting them. In the photo she sent me, not all the trees were there, but there were nearly 20 there. I don’t know when that photo was taken, but I think they were the
original trees planted. It’s quite an old photo,” she said.
“They put plaques on them with soldiers’ names on them, and the timber from the plaques was obtained from the Sultan Mine, which was the biggest mine in Barrys Reef, where some of the men who went to war
would’ve worked.”
Ms Hitchcock has written a book of more than 700 pages, which hasn’t yet been published, and has a chapter on the soldiers of Barrys Reef.
“I got on to the Canberra National Archives, and I think I’ve researched all of them ex-
cept for six who I’ve been unable to find anything about. I’ve written a chapter in my book about it, and found some photos in the Canberra Archives too,” she said.
For more information on Ms Hitchcock’s historical work, visit the ‘Blackwood History and Pioneers, Victoria’ Facebook page.

Police policy is uniform
By Lachlan Ellis
Victoria Police have denied claims that a Moorabool officer was stood down or denied a promotion, due to wearing earrings during media interviews last year.
Then-Acting Sergeant Sally Fairweather, a member stationed at the Ballan Police Station, was praised for saving three jet skiers at Pykes Creek on 11 December, swimming around 250 metres to rescue the trio.
The act earned the praise of the Moorabool community and beyond, with people on social media dubbing Fairweather a “hero” and an “absolute legend”.
But those feelings turned to outrage, when reports of a reprimand for wearing earrings while on-duty sprung up this month.
The Herald Sun reported that Leading Senior Constable Fairweather was denied a promotion for wearing earrings during media interviews regarding the rescue, while The Courier said she was placed on leave by Victoria Police.
However, when asked about these claims, a Victoria Police spokesperson firmly denied them, stating that they were “unaware of where the permanent promotion angle from the Herald Sun has come from” and “The (Ballarat) Courier was told it was factually inaccurate to report that Sally was placed on sick leave by the organisation – an employer is unable to do this”.
It was acknowledged that LSC Fairweather’s wearing of earrings was against Victoria Police’s standards and she was no longer Acting Sergeant, however, no link between these two events was made.
The spokesperson also said that LSC Fairweather has returned to work following her sick leave.
“All Victoria Police officers and PSOs are expected to abide by the uniform and appearance standards. The Victoria Police Manual clearly states that officers are not allowed to wear earrings of any kind while on duty,” the Victoria Police spokesperson told the Moorabool News.
“There is no doubt the officer performed a heroic act when rescuing jet skiers in Pykes Creek Reservoir on Sunday 11 December. However, it is important that members maintain the uniform standards at all times, and it is not uncommon to have a conversation with someone if they are not abiding by the policy.
“The officer in question is no longer acting in the Sergeant position. As this is an internal matter, it would be inappropriate for us to comment further.”
Under point 9.3 of the Victoria Police Manual’s Uniform and Appearance Standards, “members are permitted to wear the following items of jewellery: wrist watches, minimal rings of conservative style, emergency medical alert bracelets or pendants”.
It also states that “wearing of other jewellery, ornaments, adornments, or accessories is not permitted. This includes, but is not limited to; earrings, spacers, any facial/body piercings, plugs, tunnels, bars, chains, dental grills, etc.”
The Moorabool News attempted to contact LSC Fairweather, but she was unable to respond by the deadline.
Shire to welcome new Australians
Moorabool Shire will welcome 86 new citizens as part of the Australia Day 2023 celebrations at the Mechanics Institute at Inglis Street in Ballan.
The migrants, who come from countries including India, Pakistan, United Kingdom, United States, Philippines, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, Fiji, Singapore, the Netherlands, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Taiwan, Canada, Malaysia, Bangladesh, Russian Federation, New Zealand, South Africa, Poland, Nigeria, and Romania, will attend one of two ceremonies being held on Thursday 26 January 2023. One ceremony will start at 9 am, with a second ceremony from 11.30 am. Both events will be livestreamed.
Mayor Cr Rod Ward said Australia Day is a significant day to reflect on the privilege of Australian citizenship, and what it means to be Australian.
“Australia Day is a time for us to give a warm welcome to our newest citizens and acknowledge the importance of what it means to become a full member of the Australian community. There is no greater privilege than our citizenship. It’s a lifelong commitment to Australia’s values of freedom, democracy, equality, and respect,” Cr Ward said.
Cr Ward said citizenship is the common bond uniting all Australians, whether you are a citizen by birth or by choice.
On Australia Day 2023, thousands of
people will become citizens at hundreds of ceremonies taking place across Australia.
An Australian citizenship affirmation ceremony will also be part of the celebration at Ballan, allowing all Australians to congratulate and welcome new citizens.
“Thousands of Australians are also expected to affirm their citizenship, bringing communities together in regional and metropolitan Australia,” Cr Ward said.
“I congratulate those becoming Australian citizens on making their commitment to Australia.”
For more information on the Australia Day ceremonies, head to www.moorabool. vic.gov.au and search ‘Australia Day and Awards’.

Grab your skateboards, bikes, and scooters – the new Ballan and Gordon skate parks are now open for use, just in time for school holidays.
Though final landscaping works aren’t complete yet, the skate parks at Mill Park and Gordon Public Park had a ‘soft opening’ in December, with gates opened to allow everyone to enjoy the parks over the summer holidays.
Skateboarders Niall and Wes, and scooter rider Jaxon, showed Mayor Cr Rod Ward, Deputy Mayor Cr Ally Munari and Cr Moira Berry how it’s done at Mill Park, before trying out the Gordon skate park, where the group was joined by
Catherine King MP, the Federal Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government.
The total cost for both skate parks was $550,000, with the Mill Park skate park costing $385,000, and the Gordon skate park costing $165,000. Of the total, $410,000 was provided by the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program (LRCIP), and $140,000 was contributed by Council.
As both a Councillor and a Gordon local, Cr Munari said the soft opening was exciting for the community.
“It’s really exciting for the community, especially the kids that have been eagerly awaiting jumping on. It’s perfect
timing for school holidays, I think that was the reason for the soft opening – we definitely wanted kids to have somewhere to go as soon as school finished up,” she told the Moorabool News.
“On a personal level, I have three skaters in the family, and it’s already made life so much easier. It’s not even ten minutes up the road for us, and it’s so much easier to get the kids there than driving up to Ballarat all the time, just for them to enjoy a hobby they love. Everyone wants their kids to get out and have fun,” she said.

Coimadai fatal – local man in court
By Lachlan Ellis
A Maddingley man will return to the Ballarat Magistrates Court later this year for a two-day committal, charged with dangerous driving causing death.
Jake Tate was 19 years old when he was involved in a Coimadai car accident on 8 July last year.
The accident, which involved a truck, bus, and three cars, including Mr Tate’s, resulted in a truck driver becoming trapped, and the driver of a car hitting a tree, dying at the scene.
Mr Tate appeared in-person for a committal mention at the Ballarat Magistrates Court on Thursday 12 January, supported by his parents and represented by a lawyer.
Mr Tate’s lawyer said the defence was seeking to hear from seven witnesses, and also requested prosecution obtain statements from emergency service personnel who attended the scene of the accident in July.
“The filing hearing in this matter was on the 11th of July. An extension for service of the hand-up brief of 8 weeks was granted on that occasion. A further extension was sought on the 3rd of October and was granted. The hand-up brief was served on the 18th of October, that brief was missing a significant
amount of material, such that the committal mention on the 8th of December had to be adjourned,” she said.
“There is still a significant amount of material that has been requested, that has not yet been provided...there are eight police officers that attended the collision scene, and paramedics that attended the collision scene, and statements have not been sought from them. In my view, it’s clearly relevant to the way this case is put.”
Magistrate Hugh Radford ordered that any footage and statements obtained by the prosecution following the accident be provided for inspection by the defence, before the committal in just over three months’ time.
“The prosecution shall make available and provide all outstanding body-worn camera footage and any further statements from police and ambulance officers who attended the scene of the accident that the prosecution intends to rely upon, and make available the contents of the accused’s mobile phone for inspection by the 13th of February, and the redacted contents of the phone by the 13th of March 2023,” Magistrate Radford said.
Mr Tate’s bail was extended to Thursday 26 April, to face a two-day committal on 26 and 27 April.

Delivering on sustainability
Coles customers in select areas of Australia – including Bacchus Marsh – will have their online orders fulfilled by quieter, more eco-friendly vans, as part of a new trial.
Solar-powered fridges equipped in vans in Bacchus Marsh, Burwood East, Aspley, The Gap, and Cairns will no longer rely on the van’s engine to power cooling during grocery drop-offs, which will help to reduce emissions, fuel consumption and operational noise.
In total, ten of these environmentally friendly delivery vans will join Coles’ fleets in Victoria and Queensland.
Coles General Manager Online Network and Growth James Geddes welcomes the innovation, and says it is an impor-
tant step in the supermarket’s Together to Zero emissions ambition.
“We are really excited to launch this trial that won’t just lower emissions but will also reduce fuel usage by an average of three houses each day per vehicle, as the country faces rising petrol prices,” Mr Geddes said.
“Customers will get the benefit of quieter deliveries as the vans will no longer need to idle in order to keep groceries cool. The trial will help better understand the capabilities of solar power in reducing energy consumption in our fleet of delivery vans.”
Rates capped for 2023/24
By Lachlan Ellis
The State Government has handed down its rate cap for the 2023/24 financial year, limiting the amount councils can increase their total revenue from rates and municipal charges.
The Government received a recommendation from the independent Essential Services Commission to cap rates increases at 4 per cent, in line with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) – however, it decided to set the cap at 3.5 per cent instead.
This marks a doubling of the rate cap for the current financial year, which was set on 29 December 2021 and sits at 1.75 per cent.
Minister for Local Government Melissa Horne said the rate cap balanced the need for councils to raise revenue, while also considering cost of living pressures facing ratepayers.
“The rate cap for the next financial year takes into account higher inflation and the need to protect Victorians from uncontrolled rate hikes, while ensuring councils can continue to deliver vital community services,” Ms Horne said. “Each council is responsible for setting rates within the rate cap based on the needs of their community. Community members have the chance to engage with their local councils as they make decisions about rate rises through their budget process each year.”
Transport dogs safely
Do you know the rules about transporting your dog on the back of a vehicle?
Unfortunately, unless safely restrained, dogs can be injured or killed while travelling on the back of a moving vehicle.
Agriculture Victoria says the law in Victoria requires that dogs on utes are restrained either via a tether or cage, so that the dog cannot fall off or be injured when the vehicle moves.
When the outside temperature is at or above 28 degrees Celsius, a dog on the metal tray of a ute or trailer must have access to an area of insulating material protecting the dog from contact with the metal surface.
Best practice is for dogs to travel in the cabin of the vehicle and be kept either:
• on the backseat using an appropriate seatbelt or restraining device
• in the open cargo area of a vehicle behind a cargo barrier.
Moorabool Shire Council
said the increase to 3.5 per cent was reasonable, as Council continues to work on its next budget.
“Council acknowledges that the rise in the rate cap to 3.5 per cent makes sense given a CPI currently running at around 7 per cent. Council is currently preparing its budget, and will be considering the amount rates will need to increase in order for Council to maintain the level of services expected by residents,” Mr Madden told the Moorabool News.
“As the rate cap set is lower than inflation, Council will be looking to the Victorian Government to continue to provide grants to ensure community expectations can be met in our fast-growing shire, particularly in regard to road improvements and development of much-needed new community facilities.”
Mr Madden said that Council would continue to offer support to residents and organisations across Moorabool.
“We understand with the rising cost of living that many individuals as well as organisations will face challenging times ahead just as the community is recovering from COVID,” he said.
“As always, we will have provisions in place to support any resident experiencing difficulty paying rates.”

Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor, Medical clinics and dental clinics keep popping up in Bacchus Marsh and Darley.
Medical centre’s seem to be on every corner yet only ONE Vet in the whole town, and now with the town so overpopulated, it can take a week or more to have a vet see your furry mate.
Why not just build another vet premises, since when are the health of animals not important in this town? Not sure why this hasn’t been thought of by Council?
This would make it so much easier to be seen earlier especially in circumstances where the pet’s health needs to be addressed asap.

MORTGAGE
How can I reduce the interest I am paying on my home loan?
1. If you have an o set account, make sure you use it. Interest is calculated on the net di erence between the loan balance and funds available in your o set account. 2. A quick phone call to your existing lender requesting a rate review could bring your rate back in line with the current market. You have to be proactive, the banks are not!
3. If you feel the interest rate is still not comparable, refinancing from one lender to another could save you thousands in interest.
This is general advice, for help navigating the lending landscape, reach out and we can review your individual circumstances with your best interest in mind.

When should my baby start visiting the dentist?
Modern dentistry is heavily focused on the prevention of dental disease. With our youngest patients, we aim to instil healthy habits early to encourage optimal facial growth and prevent tooth decay and gum disease. It is a good idea to bring your children in for a first visit within 6 months of their first tooth erupting. OPTOMETRY
How often should I get my eyes tested?
It is recommended that children have their eyes tested around the age of 4. If everything is normal, it is then advised to have reviews every 24 months as eyes change with growth. If there are concerns, eyes can be tested at any age, they do not have to be able to read a vision chart. Below the age of 65 it is recommended to get your eyes tested every 24-36 months, unless there is an underlying problem that requires closer monitoring. Over the age of 65 eye tests are recommended every 12 months.

2022 saw local property prices remain quite stable despite a decrease in the volume of sales across Bacchus Marsh, Darley & Maddingley compared to 2021. Early signs for 2023 are more positive with 5 properties going under contract in the first full week back for the year.
Close to the peak of interest rate rises & with great properties available, 2023 is looking like a great time to buy or sell & hopefully a return to pre-pandemic performance.

The Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation and the Bacchus Marsh & District Historical Society (BMDHS) have honoured a local officer who died on-duty over 110 years ago.
Constable Charles Jones and Senior Constable Johnston Barclay were escorting a prisoner to the local watch house, when they were attacked by two men, one of whom was the prisoner’s brother. Constable Jones was struck on the head by a beer bottle with such force that his skull was badly fractured, and he died from his injuries three days later.
BMDHS said the attack happened outside the Border Inn, now Flanagan’s, and Constable Jones died in Melbourne a few days later, being buried in the Maddingley Cemetery.
An article from The Bacchus Marsh Express’ January 14, 1911 edition, made available online on the National Library of Australia’s Trove website, details the trial of James McCormack, who was accused of hitting Constable Jones with the bottle after Constable Jones arrested his brother, Patrick.
The Coroner recorded the verdict that “On 4th January Constable Jones died from a blow wilfully, feloniously, and maliciously struck by James M'Cormack at Bacchus Marsh on 1st January, and I find James M'Cormack guilty of the wilful murder of Charles Hotham Jones.”
McCormack was committed for trial at the Supreme Court at Melbourne on 15th February 1911, with bail fixed in “one surety of £500”.

Cranbourne strikes gold in Shepp
By Michael Howard (HRV)
A new TAB Summer of Glory contender has emerged as the locals etched their names on the Neatline Homes Shepparton Gold Cup, one for the first time and another for the fourth.
Avenel trainer David Aiken, who won Cups in 2012 (Jaccka Clive), 2017 (Hectorjayjay) and 2018 (Im The Boss), enjoyed another memorable night at his home track, with new arrival Cranbourne showing pace at both ends to claim the $75,000 Group 2.
The victory was a first local Cup for driver Nathan Jack, who told TrotsVision he was happy to tick it off the bucket list, especially with one of Aiken’s horses.
“Aik was one of the first ones to put me on in town every week,” Jack said. “Had a little horse called Jayteeare and I used to drive him every week, so it’s a big thrill to win a race like this for Aik.”
And there may be more ticks to come for the team, with Cranbourne impressing and showing he’ll be a danger throughout the summer, having held off the late threat from fancied I Cast No Shadow.
“He beat an Inter Dominion winner, so he’s got to be one of the main chances,” Jack said.
While the team will pause to consider his path ahead of this Saturday’s PETstock Ballarat Pacing Cup and the February 4 Del-Re A. G. National Hunter Cup, they have much fuel for thought after initially entering Saturday night with more questions than answers.
Cranbourne only joined Aiken’s camp in December, having won 12 of his 44 New Zealand starts before being snapped up by US owner Steve Finkelstein.
The six-year-old will likely contest Victoria and New South Wales’ Grand Circuit features before Aiken crosses the Pacific with him for a working holiday in the US.
It looks set to be a profitable venture going on the son of Lincoln Royal’s Victorian debut, with Cranbourne launching from gate four to cross I Cast No Shadow, while Art Tutor and Max Delight fell in behind on the pegline.
There was little pressure from the running line, which Sicario led with little enthusiasm until Interest Free advanced with Majestic Cruiser on his tail.
The 83.7-second lead time was almost five seconds slower than that set by Spirit Of St Louis when he broke the track record in winning last year’s Cup, and the 30.9 and 30.6 first and second quarters ensured it would be a quick dash home.
“He was quite lazy and I just kissed him up a bit at the half and he got racing the one outside him (Majestic Cruiser) and then he got kicking the wheels a couple of times,” Jack said, as Cranbourne set down a 27.9-seond third quarter.
“I would have liked to go a fraction slower myself, but I could feel the horse (I Cast No Shadow) chewing the paint off my helmet turning for home, so I knew that I had to find more once I straightened.”
He did, driving off the final bend to grab an extra length as Majestic Cruiser’s challenge had peaked, with Cam Hart steering I Cast No Shadow to the leader’s outside and griding down the gap but ultimately falling a half-neck shy of another Jason Grimson-trained triumph.
The focus now turns to the Group 1 $150,000 PETstock Ballarat Pacing Cup this Saturday, Night 1 of the TAB Summer of Glory, the peak of Victorian harness racing.

Ballan won the toss and chose to bat at White Flat on a ripper day for cricket. Ballan with the bat again were very hit and miss with the innings anchored by Mick Nolan (65) before little knocks in the middle order from Ryan Lister (23) and Heath Doherty (11) looking good at the crease.
Some great power hitting at the end by Jack Jarvis (37) meant that Ballan finished on a competitive total of 198 but with plenty of overs in the bank which was disappointing. With the ball Jack Jarvis set the tone with early wickets and was backed up with good fielding to put the pressure back onto Golden Point.
Ben Loughnane and Matt Thomas bowled well to bring Ballan back into the game. Unfortunately, Golden Point passed the total on the third last ball of their innings.

Lions mean business
By Todd Whelan
Darley Cricket Club – W/e 14 January
Ladder leaders Darley remain unbeaten since the season opener following a 'clinical' nine wicket win over lowly Ballarat-Redan last weekend. The result never looked in danger despite the Lions losing the toss and been sent into the field under sweltering conditions on a seeming Darley Park wicket.
The struggling visitors, although touted by the Lions as 'better than their form suggests' lost wickets with increasing regularity as five of the six bowlers used chimed in for wickets. Star Lion Danza Hyatt, renowned more for his exploits with the bat took the honours with the ball claiming his first career five wicket haul to help rip through the Ballarat-Redan order before they were bowled out for just 89 in under 35 overs. The effort in the field, clearly an area of focus for the Lions in recent times was flawless, and capped by one of the catches of the summer, a diving one hander at full stretch by Harry Killoran square of the wicket. Needless to add the squeeze was on from the outset and no favours granted by a feverish Lions group in the field with one eye focussed on a bigger prize. Spearhead Madushanka Ekanayake added another two scalps to his season tally of 17 to remain the competitions leading wicket taker. After 12 rounds, the Lions have three of the top five bowlers on the wicket front. Dilon Chandima (3rd) has 14 and Dayle Locke (5th) 13 but was unable to add to his tally after missing with a quad complaint. Left arm seamer Mitch Ward (1/19) was given the call up in Locke's absence beating the bat on numerous occasions to finish with 1/19. Both Hasi Wickramasinghe and Harry Killoran were not required, further highlighting the enviable depth of this Lions attack.
The response, the chase with the bat would be even more emphatic for the Lions. Despite losing up and coming opener Rockey Hoey (8) leg before, Chandima and Hyatt ensured the remainder of the Lions group their services in the heat would not be required.
Chandima smashed an unbeaten 60 off 33 balls including nine fours and two sixers. His maximum over cover was made look easy, as the entertaining right-hander displayed all of his skillset, leaving onlookers and I'm sure the visitors in the field in awe of the reigning EJ Cleary medalist. The Sri Lankan born talent has 589 runs already this season, 169 clear of the competitions next best at a handy 79 average. Hyatt (22 off 18) to remain unbeaten for a third time in just four innings for the Lions this season. Despite just the four knocks to his name, Hyatt has 277 runs at a whopping 277 average.
Darley is at home again this weekend for another 50 over fixture, this time against sixth placed Mt Clear.

BCA ladder leaders Darley kickstarted their return in 2023 with a comprehensive eight wicket win on the road over bottom side Buninyong on Saturday 7 January. After losing the toss, the Lions were thrown the ball on a tricky wicket but wasted little time having the hosts on the backfoot.
Opening bowlers Madushanka Ekanayake (4/25) and Benny Longhurst (2/20) ripped through the 'Bunnies' top order to have them reeling at 4/33. A steady fall of wickets followed on the back of a disciplined display from the broader Lions attack. The winless Buninyong were eventually dismissed for just 70 in under 29 overs.
Lions Captain Benny Longhurst was impressed with the returns of his bowlers that included 10 maidens.
"We bowled really well on a tricky wicket," he said.
"We had an even spread from the bowlers
before "Eka" cleaned up the tail to finish with four."
Longhurst also gave praise for the effort in the field, an area of recent concern for the Lions.
"(It was a) good fielding performance without any dropped catches or mistakes," he said.
With a successful run chase bordering on the inevitable, dashing opener Dilon Chandima 48 (24) wasted little time putting this game to bed as the Lions surpassed the hosts target in just eight overs. The Round 11 fixture was done and dusted in less than three hours.
Longhurst summed up the nature of the win to a tee, describing the 'half an afternoon's work' as an "extremely professional performance from the whole team."
BCA 1st GRADE - (R11)
Buninyong 70, Overs 28.5. M. Ekanayake 4/25, H. Killoran 2/12, B. Longhurst 2/20.
Darley 2/72, Overs 8. D. Chandima 48.
Darley WON by 8 wickets.
