Festival springs back

By Lachlan Ellis It’s been more than three years since the Ballan Autumn Festival (BAF) filled the streets with fun, but the Festival is ‘springing back’ and it’s on this weekend.

The festivities will kick off at 9am on Sunday 13 November, with this year’s theme ‘Bloomin’ Marvellous’ signifying the decision to hold the Festival in spring this year, after it was postponed again this year in autumn.

From a Devonshire tea held by the CWA, to face painting, free pony rides, and of course the famous Grand Street Parade at 11am, there will be something for everyone at this year’s BAF. President of the BAF Committee, Kevin Harper, said it was exciting to be finally bringing the Festival back to Ballan.

“The excitement in town is great, everyone seems to be looking forward to the Festival. We’re very pleased that we’ve got some good volunteers coming along to assist, and the fact that we’ve managed to pull it off with such a small Committee, we’re excited and proud about that,” Mr Harper told the Moorabool News.

“We’ve got quite a good line-up of entertainment, including Rose’s stage caravan, and that’s going to be in one of the paddocks on the main street.

St Anne’s Winery will be serving wine and beer in that paddock, and we’ll have local well-known artists performing.”

The Committee has a wet weather program ready in case of rain, and stalls will be under the verandas of shops, but fingers are of course crossed for a lovely sunny spring day.

There will also be a best dressed competition – both for people, and for shopfronts – with vouchers to local shops on offer for the best dressed people, while the best dressed shopfront will win a professionally produced advertising video package.

Photographer soars to new heights

By Lachlan Ellis A local photographer’s work is being featured in a new book published by the CSIRO – a new feather in his cap, with the book being released last week.

David Whelan has been photographing local birds for decades, and on November 2 ‘Australian Falcons Ecology Behaviour And Conservation’, written by Dr Stephen Debus, was released.

Mr Whelan said the photos used in the book had been compiled over more than a decade, with more than 50 of his photos featured within its pages.

“It’s really fantastic, it’s sort of a pinnacle for me.

Falcons have been a favourite bird of mine for a long time. There are four other photographers that have provided photos of the grey falcon, which is a desert falcon, which I haven’t got…but all the other photos of every other species in there are by me,” Mr Whelan told the Moorabool News.

“From memory, I think the photos date back to about 2008. So they represent a good 14 years of photography. The front cover photo of the juvenile Australian hobby on the fence post, I took that at the Rowsley CFA shed. You don’t know when you’re taking the photos, when they’ll be used or how they’ll come into play down the track.

“I didn’t know when I took those photos that all these years later, they’d be used in a book. It’s very satisfying.”

EPA investigators go statewide A successful pilot project matching EPA Victoria officers with 23 councils is expanding, with all 79 municipalities to have their own local investigators.

Moorabool Shire Council, along with councils including those in Melton, Ballarat, and Wyndham, were part of the pilot program that commenced in 2017, and expanded from 13 councils to 23 in 2019.

The latest expansion will pair Officers for the Protection of the Local Environment (OPLEs) with every council in Victoria.

OPLEs handle smaller-scale pollution issues in communities such as dust, odour, noise and localised illegal dumping. The program also focuses on preventative work, reducing illegal chemical and waste stockpiling.

OPLEs addressed more than 1,600 reports between 2018 and 2020. The average time taken to complete an investigation and resolve the incident dropped from 65 days to 22, and members of the public who reported incidents were three times more likely to be satisfied with the result.

EPA CEO Lee Miezis said the benefits of the program were clear, and the program showed what can be achieved through a partnership approach to environmental protection.

“The program strengthens relationships between EPA and councils, giving faster responses, increased accountability and better outcomes for community, industry and the environment,” Mr Miezis said.

Municipal Association of Victoria President, Cr David Clark, has welcomed the expansion of the OPLE project.

“This partnership of EPA and Councils has already proved its value as a pilot project, and making it an ongoing service that covers the entire state will benefit communities and the environment across Victoria,” Cr Clark said.

Councils participating in the pilot since 2017 have reported faster response times to pollution reports and increased collaboration, information sharing and expertise.

An independent assessor’s report in 2020 found the OPLE pilot was achieving improved responses to both known and newly reported pollution, improved industry compliance with the Environment Protection Act, more preventative measures, and improved local capability to deal with environmental issues.

“Communities getting the services of an OPLE for the first time will be pleased to hear that the project gets real results for residents by resolving issues that are most likely to affect liveability in their towns and suburbs,” he said.

The OPLEs are Authorised Officers, who have powers under the Environment Protection Act 2017 to issue legally enforceable notices and fines, or escalate serious offences for court action or larger sanctions.

No pool in budget, but highway study is

By Lachlan Ellis Council has expressed disappointment that there has been no funding for a Bacchus Marsh indoor pool handed down in the recent Federal Budget, but money has been delivered for the Western Highway. $15 million from the Federal Government is needed to fund the indoor aquatic centre section of the Moorabool Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC), with Council issuing a new request for that funding before the Federal Budget’s release on Tuesday 25 October.

The requested funding would complement a $15 million commitment from Council, and $10 million from the State Government provided earlier this year.

But with $15 million in the Federal Budget being the “missing piece” to make the indoor aquatic centre a reality, come budget day, no funding was delivered.

“It is disappointing the project wasn’t considered pre-election by either major party, and now not in the new Government’s first budget, especially considering Member for Ballarat Catherine King committed to the project years ago as an election commitment,” Council’s CEO Derek Madden said.

“Council has been advocating for a change to how the Building Better Regions Program has been managed, and it was clear after many unsuccessful grants that Moorabool and other peri-urban Councils were being disadvantaged,” Mr Madden said.

“We look forward to receiving details of the new funding programs and welcome any improvements to the fund. We are confident

that the work we have done over the last number of years in developing projects that meet the needs of the community will be recognised and supported by the Federal Government.”

Member for Hawke, Sam Rae, did not directly address the Moorabool News’ questions about why the pool was not funded, but did mention other projects in Hawke that the Federal Budget will provide

funding for, chief among them being kickstarting the Western Highway Upgrade.

The $10 million has been provided for a detailed business case into upgrading the Western Highway, which sees an average of 77,000 vehicles per day travel the stretch from Melton to Caroline Springs.

“The business case will be the first step in delivering upgrade works,” Mr Rae said.

“Delivering on this commitment was my priority for the Federal Budget, because it is desperately needed to keep our growing community moving. This significant investment is the first step in delivering the much-needed upgrade to ensure locals have a quicker and safer commute,” he told the Moorabool News.

Benefits overall for Moorabool is an increased childcare subsidy of up to 90 per cent, the cost of scripts at local pharmacies being reduced by $12.50 from the start of 2023, and a $400,000 upgrade to Federation Park in Darley with traffic, pedestrian, and parking improvements, as well as the replacement of the amenities building, play space improvements and ancillary works.

“This budget not only delivers critical infrastructure for our community but will also ease the pressure on the cost of living.

I will always fight for best outcomes for our communities across Hawke,” Mr Rae said.

Dinner addresses powerline pressures

By Lachlan Ellis The mental health impacts of the ongoing battle to get a controversial powerline route put underground has perhaps not been talked about enough, but a recent event has allowed locals to open up.

A complimentary dinner was hosted at St Anne’s Winery in Myrniong by the Moorabool and Central Highlands Power Alliance (MCHPA), and sponsored by Moorabool Shire Council, on Wednesday 26 October.

While MCHPA members are used to attending protests and community meetings to discuss the Western Renewables Link (WRL), this was a different kind of event, inviting the community to connect and discuss mental strengthening strategies.

Guest speaker was psychologist Shawn Price.

MCHPA Chair Emma Muir said the dinner was a fantastic and well-received event, and she hoped to have similar events run in the future.

“We discussed mental health, staying connected, and looking after your community. It was a pretty informal

evening, it was an opportunity for people that are impacted, directly and indirectly, to get together for a chat,” Ms Muir told the Moorabool News.

“After two and a half years of fighting this, I can only speak for myself, but it’s taken over a huge amount of our lives, and it can be pretty depressing. I think we should probably do more events like this, we need to focus on our mental health as a community.”

Ms Muir thanked Council for its ongoing support of the cause.

“There’s a lot of stuff Council does behind the scenes.

They’ve been very supportive of our Alliance and have committed to helping us with submissions when the EES takes place, which is a big win for us. We meet quite regularly to update one another on the situation, on what they can tell us as some of it’s confidential,” she said.

“I think Council is doing a lot that the average community member might not be interested to know, it’s not always visible stuff…but they’re quite supportive of us and the community.”

Around 90 people attended the dinner on Wednesday night.

By Lachlan Ellis The latest round of Moorabool Council’s Community Grant funding has gone out, with the majority of applicants for the August round successful in getting funding.

From 20 applications received, 17 were recommended for approval by Council officers, with the motion to grant those applicants funding approved at Council’s 2 November Ordinary Meeting.

Successful applicants included the Wombat Regional Arts Network - ‘Youth Street Art Project’ ($3000), the Blackwood Progress Association - Blackwood Easter Carnival Music Program ($3000), and the Navigators Tennis Club, who applied for $4400 for an expansion.

The motion to approve the 17 applications was supported unanimously by Councillors, except for Cr Rod Ward, who declared a conflict of interest.

The three unsuccessful applications were the Darley Cricket Club’s 40th Anniversary ‘Back To’ project ($3000), Bacchus Marsh Football and Netball Club - goal post netting ($70,000), and $58,800 for an electronic scoreboard and electronic screen for the Ballan Football and Netball Club.

Flags finally raised

By Lachlan Ellis It’s been a long time coming, but the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags have finally been raised at the Bacchus Marsh Police Station – and they’re there to stay.

More than 80 people attended the flag raising ceremony on Wednesday 2 November, including members of the First Nations community, ADF personnel, and students and staff from Bacchus Marsh Primary School.

The ceremony began with a Welcome to Country at 11am, with Senior Wurundjeri Elder Aunty Joy Murphy welcoming the attendees and thanking them for coming to mark the momentous occasion, before a Smoking Ceremony began, with didgeridoo and clap sticks played as attendees took in the smoke from smouldering gum leaves.

“To you who’ve joined us today, no matter where you’re from, your belonging is important. Thank you to each and every one of you, for whatever reason you’ve come, it’s our pleasure to have you here on Country,” Aunty Murphy said.

She also thanked Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer Laila Rind for her hard work in putting the flag raising ceremony together.

Also in attendance at the ceremony were Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan, Crs Rod Ward and Tonia Dudzik, Assistant Commissioner for the Western Region Michael Grainger, and Manager of Ballarat and District Aboriginal Co-Operative (BADAC) Shu Brown.

Station Commander at the Bacchus Marsh Police Station, Senior Sergeant Jennifer Horgan, said the raising of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags was a proud moment for local members.

“I’m passionate about diversity and inclusion, it’s something that’s really important to me, that the community drives past and sees that everyone works together and is represented.

The last 12 months we’ve been working hard to get this off the ground, and it’s really exciting that it’s finally here,” Senior Sergeant Horgan told the Moorabool News.

“For us, it’s that symbol of community and connection, and just showing our support. We’ve come a long way in terms of working with the Aboriginal community, but there’s a long way to go…I think this gesture is another step forward for us.”

Sergeant Watts echoed Senior Sergeant Horgan’s sentiments in his speech, stating that the flags flying at the station were “a reminder of what has been done so far” in terms of reconciliation and connection with the First Nations community, while there is still “more left to do”.

“This is the first time that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags will be proudly raised and fly permanently, in unity with the Australian and Victorian flags. A few years ago, in consultation and support with Pauline Smith, our previous Aboriginal Community Liaison Officer, I requested additional flagpoles to be installed. This request was fully supported,” Sergeant Watts said.

After Ms Smith found a new role, and was replaced by Laila Rind with Senior Sergeant Horgan taking on the role of Station Commander, Sergeant Watts submitted his request again.

Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said the ceremony marked “a significant day in Moorabool’s commitment to continuing to respect Traditional Owners”.

“As a result, we can now respectfully acknowledge and raise both the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags at the same time as the Australian and Victorian flags today,” Sergeant Watts said.

After the speeches, a free barbeque lunch was then held, followed by song performances by Deb Clark, a dance of connection to country by Bacchus Marsh Primary School students, and a song performance by Uncle Jack Walker.

The ceremony ended at 2pm, with attendees able to take in Aboriginal artefacts and artwork from BADAC and Priority Communities.

Road repairs has budget increase

Moorabool Council has voted to increase its spending on road maintenance this month, as road conditions continue to worsen from rain damage.

Noting that “we can’t fix every road overnight”, Cr David Edwards asked Council officers what additional defects could be attributed to recent rain damage, and what the timeframe looked like on repairing Council’s roads.

“I couldn’t quantify it at the moment, not only do we have the additional maintenance through normal potholes, but we’ve got the damage from storms. They’re sort of intertwined … it’d be more than double,” Phil Jeffrey (General Manager of Infrastructure) said.

“Our plan is to try and hit it as hard as we can as early as we can. We obviously need a bit of a break in the weather to get things moving on the ground, but we’re organising contractors to get mobilised well before Christmas. We want to have a lot of the storm damage rectified prior to Christmas, and then the sealed roads will probably take a bit longer than that to get organised.”

Mr Jeffrey said they are hoping “early in the new year we’d be back on track, subject to weather being kind to us.”

The motion to increase road maintenance spending was approved unanimously by Council.

Harley clocked at over 200kph

A Bacchus Marsh motorbike rider has been caught doing more than double the speed limit on the Western Freeway, receiving a four figure impound fee for his reckless riding.

On 31 October, Melton Highway Patrol were conducting laser speed checks on the Western Freeway in Melton West as part of Operation Furlong, over the Cup Day weekend.

At approximately 4.55 pm, a black Harley Davidson was initially detected travelling at 147 km/h in the 110 km/h speed zone, then it sped up to 230 km/h before being intercepted at the Coburns Road off-ramp.

Historical mural hangs again

A 40-year-old wool mural is back on display at the Ballan Shire Historical Society (BSHS), and while it’s not as vibrant as it once was, it remains a beautiful representation of local history.

The wool mural measures three by two and a half metres and is made of pure wool, all of which was donated by local wool growers.

Ballarat Sheep Show in 1982, and the Royal Melbourne Show in September 1983. It also spent time travelling through country Victoria, returning to Ballan after about a decade.

In the 1980s, the Art and Craft Society obtained the use of the Court House and stored the mural there, but in 1988 it moved to St Paul’s Manse, where the mural was unable to be stored.

It was hung in the foyer of the Ballan Shire Office until around 2014, when BSHS was asked by Council to find a new home for it.

After being kindly looked after by Joe McFall, the mural has now finally returned to the Court House under BSHS’ care.

BSHS has occupied the Court House since 1990.

The mural weighs a whopping 20 kilograms, and its stitches include satin, stem, buttonhole, rice, herringbone, grub, and tapestry.

The first stitches were put into the canvas in early November 1981, and it was finished on 19 March 1982, in time for that year’s Ballan Arcadian Arts Festival.

The Ballan Court House will be hosting an Open Day during the Ballan Autumn Festival, from 10 am to 3 pm on Sunday 13 November.

Thousands raised for Readathon

A local school has raised over $14,000 for the MS Readathon this year – the second-highest total of any school in Australia.

Darley Primary School students were challenged to read as many books as they could throughout the month of August, with 140 students reading a total of 1,323 books.

At the end of the Readathon – which raises funds for vital support services for families with multiple sclerosis (MS) – the school had raised a whopping $14,372, from a goal of $3,000.

Assistant Principal Emma Boughton said the students’ efforts in raising money for the Readathon had been phenomenal.

“A special congratulations to the top three fundraisers – Lyla Coates ($1,265), Owen Whitney ($1,194) and Robert Bielecki ($800) – who all enjoyed a special lunch with school principal, Fiona Kerton. The three reported their favourite books were: the Billie B Brown series, My World Countries, and Cat in the Hat respectively,” Ms Boughton said.

“The MS Readathon has run for over 45 years, and Darley Primary School looks forward to participating in 2023.”

State Funding Needed to Help Moorabool Thrive

Thank you for helping us shape our Community Vision!

The State elec�on is just a few weeks away, and we’re busy advoca�ng to our local poli�cians and candidates for improved infrastructure and services for Moorabool.

Our top 4 priority projects and the state funding required are: • The Bacchus Marsh Community and Bowls Hub ($3.5 million) • The sewering of Bungaree and Wallace ($6 million) • Duplica�on of Griffith St, Bacchus Marsh, between Grant St and Cassina Boulevard Read more about this project on page 3. ($3 million) • A new oval at Bungaree Recrea�on Reserve oval ($500,000) These priority projects are shovel-ready and have been iden�fied following close consulta�on with Councillors and our community.

We recently received funding for two other priority projects: • More than $3.22 million in State Government funding through it’s Growing Suburbs Fund for The Bacchus Marsh Racecourse Recrea�on Reserve community pavilion, which will include a large community space, community mee�ng rooms, a kitchen, store room and a family respite room. The pavilion will service many community groups, and people of all ages and abili�es.

• Ac�vity nodes along the Aqualink Linear Park, that will provide for play, socialisa�on, recrea�on, habitat and rest. The funding for $671,470 also came from the State Government’s Growing Suburbs Fund.

October rain event Along with much of the state, Moorabool Shire was hit with heavy rainfall last month. Flash flooding occurred in townships right across the Shire and mul�ple roads were closed. In order to assist residents to prepare for the deluge, Council opened free sand bagging sta�ons at the Ballan Council office and Bacchus Marsh Council depot. We thank the en�re Moorabool community for their resilience and togetherness during the floods, especially as much of our community are s�ll recovering from the las�ng impacts of the June 2021 major storm event.

The recent weather and rain events have significantly impacted on Council’s roads throughout the Shire. Council is preparing an ac�on plan to invest more money and resources into fixing our road network where it has deteriorated at a rapid rate due to the weather. Where the roads have been directly impacted by floods, Federal Government funding will be used to fix the roads, but more funding from Council’s opera�ng budget is being considered for ongoing road maintenance. We will keep residents up to date on the progress of this through our website and social media channels.

Get excited if you’re planning to take up basketball next year: the Bacchus Marsh Indoor stadium, part of the Moorabool Aqua�c and Recrea�on (MARC) project in Taverner St, is tracking along nicely.

The steel portal frame for the stadium is complete and car park and drainage works are well underway. The comple�on date for the stadium is mid-2023, and will have 4 mul�-use courts, spectator sea�ng, a func�on room and player and public ameni�es. The project cost is $16.6 million, funded by Council and the State Government.

To complement the stadium, rehabilita�on work will be done on Taverner St, with on-street parking and shared paths. This work is funded through Council’s 2022/23 Capital Improvement Program.

TourismtoGrants Council has transitioned the new Accessible Parking Permit (APP) scheme along with 79 other Victorian Councils.

All existing disability permits remain valid until their expiry date and permit holders are not required to do anything until it’s time to renew their existing permit.

Have your say on aged care The Minister for Aged Care is encouraging older people, their family, carers, and aged care providers to share their thoughts on improving aged care, as part of a new review.

Play space to be upgraded

By Lachlan Ellis A Moorabool play space is set to benefit from an upgrade, thanks to the State Government’s Living Local Fund.

The Darley Park Play Space upgrade will be funded by a $200,000 grant, with Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle visiting Darley Park on Tuesday 25 October to deliver the news.

“The Play Space is a $200,000 grant, it’s not an election commitment. The whole idea about the Living Local Fund is trying to invest in things that keep communities together, and I can’t think of a better way to do that than a play space,” Ms Settle told the Moorabool News.

“I’m really delighted. It’s going to complement all the work we’re doing with the sports clubs there, there’s going to be a brand-new facility, and now there will be an upgraded play space there for the whole community to use.”

The funding will support the construction of a new accessible play space, landscaping, and park furniture, encouraging physical activity and community connectedness.

Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan thanked Ms Settle and the State Government for the funding.

“We’re very grateful to receive this funding through the Living Local Fund. Accessible and safe play spaces are such an important aspect of our open spaces in Moorabool, and we’re very happy Darley Park will receive this upgrade,” he said.

The Living Local Fund will support more than 400 projects across Victoria, with councils and community organisations benefiting from grants of up to $200,000 for upgrades to shopping strips, playgrounds, community gardens and more.

The Aged Care Quality Standards have been revised to strengthen key areas such as food and nutrition, diversity, dementia, clinical care, and governance – and the Federal Government wants to hear from the public to make sure they’ve got it right.

Anika Wells is the Federal Minister for Aged Care, and said the review was in response to the recommendations of the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

“The Aged Care Quality Standards are more than just a document. They provide a shared understanding of what is expected in aged care. They are being urgently reviewed so we can strengthen requirements and embed high quality in the aged care system,” Ms Wells said.

“I want to ensure all older people receive high quality care that is best suited to them and meets their individual needs, which is why it’s so critical that as many people engage as possible and have their say.

“We heard what the Royal Commission said, and are raising the bar for quality and safety.”

Is everyone ready for the Ballan Spring/Autumn Festival this Sunday?

A search for the meaning of “greenwashing” identifies various definitions along the lines of: the process of conveying a false impression about how a company's products or services are environmentally sound. Greenwashing often involves unsubstantiated claims or deceptive suggestions to deceive the community into believing that a company's products are environmentally friendly or have a greater positive environmental impact than what is true.

It is a great way to show off our town to the many visitors that will come and visit Ballan and its surroundings.

Our Moorabool Shire is the envy of other areas, as it is not compounded by poor planning decisions.

Our towns and hamlets are small, friendly and represent what the community is all about, but on the horizon is one of the state’s biggest infrastructure builds that will destroy our landscape forever, with 85 metre transmission powerlines zig zagging across our homes, farmland, and rural work areas.

To give our communities a bigger voice, and raise awareness in this decision, a group of farmers wanted to put a float in the Ballan Spring Autumn parade, which has now been denied. These farmers are the ones that protect the landscape and rivers, grow the trees, help crew the CFA fire trucks, that make our Moorabool Shire one of the most visited in the state.

We plead to give Moorabool Shire a voice by allowing us in the parade to protect our landscape for the future. The message is clear, underground these lines and not overhead.

Rebranding of the Western Victorian Transmission Network (WVTNP) as the Western Renewables Link (WRL) is greenwashing, plain and simple. Rather than address the underlying cause of its total loss of social licence, AusNet have simply changed the name, colour scheme and spin. No matter how much green-spin you put on this project, it is still an environmental-pig of a project.

The WRL continues to build on the technically flawed RIT-T assessment of options and is pursuing an overhead design along a (mostly) new corridor, where environmental and socio-economic impacts are ignored to chase lowest cost.

In a bizarre twist, the current Labor government has identified the shortcomings in this approach and have promised a better, more inclusive, transmission planning model in VicGrid. VicGrid is Lily D’Ambrosio’s division

within DELWP overseeing planning for Victoria’s $540m Renewable Energy Zone Fund. Under VicGrid the overall community, economic and environmental benefits are to be considered ‘up front’ in determining best options.

While on the surface this sounds a good thing, the current government and VicGrid are actually failing Victorians, because they are only applying this new approach to future projects and not the WRL, which is underway. The WRL is a cornerstone in the current VicGrid REZ Development Plan, yet it is the ‘rotten apple in the barrel’.

The government cannot claim the ‘green high-ground’ in promoting the REZ Plan, if the foundational project does not meet the planning standards that they themselves now set.

They do not seem to see this as a contradiction.

I think it is high time we elect local members that will represent us without flinching and a government which will stand by the planning principles it espouses. I believe we need a new government that will direct VicGrid and the AEMO to pause and reassess the WRL for overall net benefit to all Victorians.

By Lachlan Ellis The Bacchus Marsh Lions Club has commemorated its 50th anniversary, with members and their families attending a celebratory dinner.

There was plenty to reminisce about, with both past and present members of the Bacchus Marsh chapter in attendance at the local Public Hall on 29 October – the same building where the club was chartered, back in 1972.

District Governor of the Lions District 201V1-4, Robyn Falloon, awarded Russ Hendry and Len Murfitt with 50 Year Monarch awards, signifying their active involvement in the Club since it was founded.

Mr Hendry said he was proud to have been involved in the Lions Club for all that

time, and contribute to its service to the community of Bacchus Marsh & District.

“Len and I are the only two active members still in the Club from when it was founded.

The Lions Club have done a great job, communities don’t exist without volunteers,” he told the Moorabool News.

“We’ve probably raised $5 million for the community over that time, we’ve done some pretty major events, built Providence … we’ve done some pretty big jobs.”

Also in attendance was guest speaker Dr Graeme Pollock OAM, Director of the Lions Eye Donation Service, which has helped restore the sight of over 10,000 undergoing corneal transplants since it was opened in 1991.

Finally, we had perfect conditions for Little Athletics with the sun shining over Masons Lane Reserve, not a breath of wind and with the track in pristine condition, athletes were producing their best performances for the season.

A Moorabool athlete has qualified for the Australian All Schools Championships, and will represent the state in South Australia in December.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics member Bridie Shanahan, qualified for the Victorian squad late last month, with messages of congratulations flying in for her on the Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics Centre (BMLAC) Facebook page.

The achievement comes after Ms Shanahan won silver in the Under 17 Discus at the Victorian All Schools Track & Field Championships on October 30, with a throw of 34.44 metres.

The Australian All Schools Championships will be held in Adelaide from 9 – 11 December, at SA Athletics Stadium.

A whopping 410 Personal Best results were recorded. The following athletes recorded PB’s in every available event, earning them the Darley Bakehouse PB Stars of the Week – Jonas Cukavac, Harrison Lovett, Auden Sundqvist, Troy Lee, Archie Clarke, Hayden Tung, Tait Ash, Jude Brody-Wall and Kobi Hehir.

Athletes will compete in various disciplines gaining points in each event for an overall finally total. Meanwhile all other athletes will participate in the weekly Centre competition with Program 2 being conducted.

The following week, Saturday 19th will be the Coles Community Round where athletes are encouraged to dress up in Coles themed outfits or even just a splash of red. There will be Coles vouchers up for grabs for the best dressed athletes.

The Centre have been fortunate to have Australian Olympian Matthew Denny selected to visit Bacchus Marsh as a Coles Ambassador and will help BMLAC celebrate Coles Community Round.

Lions return home success Darley Cricket Club

By Todd Whelan Stand-in Captain Bradley Barnes’ unbeaten 61 (84) proved the catalyst in the Lions all important four wicket win over Brown Hill last weekend.

Chasing 189 runs for victory after winning the toss, Barnes wandered to the crease, joining Harry Killoran with the game in the balance at 3/65. Dilon Chandima (2), Rockey Hoey (23) and Hasi Wickramasinghe (4) were the ‘already departed’.

Barnes and Killoran put on a match winning 80 run fourth wicket partnership in good time, before the English import went for 53 (92). Conditions on Darley Park were super given the recent rains, that has seen the Lions play just three of their scheduled opening five games as ground availability remains scarce across the wider BCA competitions.

Barnes and Killoran combined for 11 boundaries, one more than Brown Hill could muster from their entire innings. For Barnes however, his return with the bat was timely to say the least. The knock would become the 29-year old’s fifth First Grade half century in 151 games and his second against Brown Hill. Lions coach Brian Wheelahan could not have been more proud.

“Barnesy was back to his best,” he said.

“His partnership with Harry (Killoran) got us over the line - both were simply brilliant with their maturity summing up the conditions and state of play.”

Wheelahan also offered words of encouragement for third gamer Rockey Hoey for his efforts at the top of the innings.

“Rockey continues to grow and looks more than comfortable at this level.

“He continues to work really hard during the week and is reaping the rewards.”

The dual Premiership Coach acknowledged the efforts of the bowling group without their Captain and leader Benny Longhurst (calf) and Mitch Ward (ankle) who look set for a period on the sidelines.

“Dayle Locke (4/41) took some really key wickets for us while our spinners bowled quite well,” Wheelahan said.

“Hasi (0/14 off 10 ov) put the clamps on, and second gamer Liam Cornford (1/22) bowled some beautiful deliveries.”

Wheelahan later described wicketkeeper Andy Pickett’s glove work that included four catches and a stumping as “simply outstanding”.

Despite the win, the Lions fielding remains a work in progress according to Wheelahan.

“By our own admissions our effort in the field was below our standards with ground balls and dropped catches,” he said.

The Lions will be buoyed by the return of star batting allrounder Danza Hyatt for their round six meeting on the road with Buninyong that begins this Saturday.

Horsham owner-trainer-driver Aaron Dunn did what no one else could do at Maryborough on Sunday.

He denied the powerful team of Emma Stewart a win in a Breeders Crown heat.

Dunn guided Little Louie to victory in the third IRT Australia Breeders Crown Series heat for two-year-old colts and geldings in the last race of the day.

Stewart had won all five previous two-year-old heats on the day - three for fillies, and two Driver of Little Louie Aaron Dunn. for colts and geldings.

Bred by Dunn’s parents Barry Photo – Stuart McCormick and Yvonne, Little Louie lived up to strong support by punters to lead most of the way.

The colt’s only previous win had been on debut six starts earlier at Swan Hill in May. Dunn had one of the big improvers in last year’s Breeders Crown series for two-year-old colts and geldings in Flash Jimmy.

He stepped up at big odds to finish second in a heat, and went on be second in a semi-final and fourth in the Group 1 final.

In recording the fastest heat time of 1:57.5, Little Louie has indicated he too can take Dunn all the way to the final and perhaps even do better than his former stablemate.

Despite lowering her colours in the last heat of the day, Stewart capped off an extraordinary three days.

She won five Breeders Crown three-year-old heats at Bendigo on Friday night, four races at Melton on Saturday and then the five Breeders Crown two-year-old qualifiers.

Tempting Tigress, the unbeaten Major Delight and Perfect In Pink swept the fillies’ heats at Maryborough, and Techys Watching kept the run going with The Lost Storm in the colts and geldings’ division.

Mark Pitt finished the day with six driving winners from the 10 races on the card.

The Crown semi-finals will be contested at Tabcorp Park on Saturday night.
