“This will assist in the coming years with providing fruit for school children who often go to school without food, and help parents and guardians who are unable to afford to fill lunch boxes with healthy snacks. It also teaches the kids about self-sustainability, how to nurture and fertilise to reap the best rewards from nature. Children also learn that food doesn't come from supermarkets, but from the earth.”
By Lachlan Ellis Students at two local schools will soon be enjoying fresh nectarines, apples, pears, peaches, and various citrus fruits straight from their own trees, thanks to donations from the community.
The food donations are given to Soul Food for distribution, where weekly lunches are provided to those in need every Wednesday.
Judy D’Attoma runs BUTPIF and said the fruit tree donation wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of the Bacchus Marsh community.

By Lachlan Ellis A man is now ‘Set for Life’ after a very happy Monday last week, when the numbers he picked on a Ballan lotto ticket were drawn, winning him a cool $4.8 million. The Sailors Falls man purchased the 4-game QuickPick at the Ballan Newsagency on Inglis Street, and was the only Division 1 winning entry in draw 2573 of the Set for Life Draw, drawn Monday 22 August. The $4.8 million will be paid to the man in instalments of $20,000 a month for the next 20Theyears.anonymous lucky winner said he had been thinking about the win all day at work, and “was going a bit crazy thinking about it”. “Last week, I spoke to someone about retiring in the next five years, but this has just brought that forward by many years. I’ll probably buy a house, retire earlier than expected, and travel around Australia. I enjoy driving in the outback, so I’ll explore Australia on the road,” he said. The winning numbers were 6, 25, 19, 13, 41, 18, and 37, with the supplementary numbers 20 and 33.

Ian Ireland owns the Ballan Newsagency, and said the Division 1 win was exciting for the team, especially given Ballan’s relatively small population. “It was very exciting hearing we’d sold the winning ticket…I always read my emails first thing in the morning, but I hadn’t read the email Tatts sent me at about 10 to 7, saying we’d sold a winner. Renee came to work at 11 o’clock and said she’d gotten a message from Colleen, who manages the Bacchus Marsh Tatts outlet, congratulating us for selling a Division 1 ticket,” Mr Ireland told the Moorabool News.
A black 2011-2014 Mazda CX5 with no registration plates was seen in the vicinity of the burglary before driving away toward the Western Highway about 11.30am. A 2014 report by Monash University found that “when compared to the Victorian populations and to the Australian-born Victorian population, the overall cancer risk was significantly higher” for those with a high level of exposure to the Fiskville training site. The Fiskville Redress Scheme will provide mental health support, medical support, and counselling to those who need it, with financial compensation of up to $45,000 offered to those exposed.
The announcement of the Fiskville Redress Scheme comes almost seven and a half years after the facility at Fiskville was closed, after high levels of the toxic chemical PFOS were detected. Tests at the Fiskville Training College showed PFOS levels around the training area ranged from less than 1 microgram per litre, to as high as 50 micrograms per litre.International guidelines for safe drinking water suggest a maximum of 0.2 micrograms per litre, and 4 micrograms per litre for non-drinking water.
Photo Helen Tatchell Advertisement
Mr Ireland added that he “doesn’t think you can put a price on people’s wellbeing”.
Closing Fiskville put 80 people out of work, and while some of those have been lucky and been re-employed by FRV or CFA, but a big percentage haven’t.
“Many are still dealing with the physical and mental effects of their time at Fiskville – today is about acknowledging that service in the name of keeping Victorians safe and the severe consequences that came from that.”
People who worked or trained at Fiskville, lived at or near the facility, or attended the Fiskville State School between 1972 and 2015, will be among those encouraged to apply for the redress scheme, which will open for applications on Monday 5 September.
“To say we’re allocating $57 million, that’s lovely in figures, but it doesn’t bring back loved ones, or people that have needed help in the past,” he said.

Fiskville victims to be compensated
By Lachlan Ellis
“It’s a step in the right direction…but does it require limits? Everyone’s circumstances are different. I know some people have been really badly affected by it, and yet we’re putting a limit on what they can get, by saying there’s $45,000 if you had high exposure,” Mr Ireland told the Moorabool News.
“I would hope there’s more to be done. It’s easy to say we’ll pay people out, but that doesn’t resolve the fact there’s no employment for many people. There’s nothing wrong with the facility at Fiskville, they could quite easily use it for volunteer use.”
The State Government has announced a $57 million scheme to support those exposed to toxic substances at the former CFA Training College at Fiskville in Moorabool Shire, with both financial compensation and non-financial support to be offered.
Ballan CFA volunteer Ian Ireland said the redress scheme was long overdue, and he hoped more could be done for those impacted by Fiskville.
“It’s affected our local community, businesses, living standards and things like that. Some people, one minute they’ve got a job, next minute they haven’t.
For more information on the Fiskville Redress Scheme or to register your interest, visit www.vic.gov.au/ redress-fiskville.
“Today is an important milestone, as we announce much-needed support those who have been affected by their time at Fiskville and acknowledge the harm caused to them and the community,” Ms Symes said at last Friday’s announcement.
Emergency Services Minister Jaclyn Symes said further payments may be offered to those who contracted an illness attributable to their time at Fiskville.

A new proposed route for the controversial Western Renewables Link has been published, but groups protesting the powerlines say the plan is just “more of the same”.AusNet Services, which is planning the Western Renewables Link, formally announced the updated proposal on Thursday 18 August, with tweaks to the sections of the line from Waubra to Glendonald, Mount Prospect to Long Forest, and Long Forest to Sydenham.Thesection from Bulgana to Waubra remains the same under the new proposal. One of the biggest adjustments is near Myrniong, with the new proposed route moving further from the Myrniong township and closer to the Lerderderg State Park, which AusNet says will “reduce the visual scale of towers” and increase distance to some houses on farming land”. A spokesperson for the Western Renewables Link said the proposed route had been refined “in response to additional feedback and studies”, and the project “will be developed over several years”.
But Emma Muir from Stop AusNet’s Towers argues the realignment is just pushing the issue to other landowners, and said some impacted landowners had been blindsided by AusNet’s announcement on Thursday.
“We’re not going away, we’re still here … why not use the best technology, be clever, spend the money and do it properly. Keep the community on-side instead of fighting us … we will continue to fight. We’ll happily help you build them if you build them in a way the community agrees to,” she said. “We’re really disappointed with how they’ve released this, I know at least half a dozen people who weren’t consulted and didn’t even know, they weren’t even contacted about the new route before the announcement,” Ms Muir said. “The whole community in these areas will be impacted, not just landholders, which AusNet fail to recognise. They say 240 landholders are affected, but it’s not just that, it’s neighbours and the community too. If you’re a neighbour and powerlines are going up on your boundary fence, it might impact you too.
“We've reviewed the two alternatives at Melton and chosen a modified version of the northern route that was originally proposed. At this stage we have no updates for the Hepburn Lagoon options. A preferred route has not yet been identified and our investigations are continuing,” the spokesperson told the Moorabool News.

“Staff and Arlo have been trained to assist students with emotional regulation, social connection, and communication. “Students and staff are happier, and he has assisted with students returning from COVID with the various mental health issues associated with this. Scientific evidence clearly demonstrates that being near a dog can reduce stress and anxiety and decrease the heart rate.

Gordon Primary School students and staff have celebrated the first birthday of the school’s wellbeing dog, Arlo, with a range of fun games. The groodle was introduced to the school in late 2021 as part of the ‘Dogs Connect’ program, which puts dogs into schools, hospitals, aged care homes, and more. The occasion was marked with birthday games such as a scavenger hunt, musical chairs, birthday card making, and ‘pin the tail on Arlo’.
As a Dogs Connect School Wellbeing Dog, Arlo works to bring wellbeing benefits to all he encounters within the Gordon Primary School community,” Mr Cowan told the Moorabool News.
Principal Russel Cowan said Arlo had provided real benefits to both students and staff at the school since his arrival, especially after COVID lockdowns.

MAV President Cr David Clark said those working in the technology space for local government sometimes miss out on the recognition they deserve, and the MAV Technology Awards for Excellence were one way of rectifying that. Project X was a way of making Council’s internal record-keeping more efficient, but will also provide a benefit to the community, as better record-keeping enables Council to store and find information the community might be seeking more easily.
By Lachlan Ellis Moorabool Shire Council has won a major award at a Victorian local government awards contest, being acknowledged for a new document management system. Council took out the award in the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) Technology 2022 Awards for Excellence ‘Collaboration or Partnership’ category, for its ‘2020/21 Project X (naming conventions) – Moorabool, A Metadata Journey’ project. Project X complemented Council’s transition to the new Sharepoint document management system, introducing new naming conventions to improve retrieval of information in an engaging and creative way.Council was also highly commended in the Employee Experience category for introducing Project X, and was one of three nominees for MAV Technology’s People’s Choice Award, though this went to Banyule City Council’s IoT Smart Cities Asset Management system. Moorabool Shire Council CEO Derek Madden said winning the award was a fantastic accomplishment for Council, and a great acknowledgement of the hard work put in by Council staff. “Moorabool Shire was one of only two councils in regional and rural Victoria to make the finals of the MAV Technology awards,” Mr Madden said. “It’s great recognition of the staff, and of their innovation and dedication in ensuring the organisation operates in the most efficient and effective way.”
A ‘Bacchus Marsh CBD Committee’ is currently in the works, with police hoping to chat with community stakeholders such as local school principals, the retail and business district, and Council officers.
Magistrate Ronald Saines ordered that Mr Carruthers serve a six-month prison sentence for the aggravated burglary, 14 days for the bicycle theft, and 28 days for possession of proceeds of crime being jewellery. The 169 days already served were taken into account by the Magistrate as part of that sentence.“Thequestion of what therapeutic treatment [you need] should be imposed should be determined by the County Court. By my calculation you’ve got 3 or 4 weeks to serve before you complete this sentence,” Magistrate Saines said. “I would be hopeful that the Office of Corrections might act promptly to bring the breach of corrections order before the County Court so that can be dealt with after your release. If that doesn’t happen, in my opinion, you should make inquiries with the Office of Corrections to resume that community corrections order…if you do that, and you can say that you’ve re-engaged, your chances of going back to prison are greatly reduced if not avoided.
By Lachlan Ellis Moorabool Council and Bacchus Marsh Police are working together to address poor behaviour by youth in the Bacchus Marsh CBD, and they want to hear from the community.
Station Commander Senior Sergeant Jennifer Horgan said Bacchus Marsh Police were eager to get the community involved in finding solutions to local issues. “As part of Neighbourhood Policing, we’re not just listening to what the community is worried about but getting police to specifically address those concerns. Police work with partners like local councils, community groups and government agencies when issues are more complex,” Senior Sergeant Horgan told the Moorabool News.

I hope examples like Moorabool, Kingston, Hume City, Glenelg, and Casey City serve to motivate the entire local government sector on the possibilities when we embrace technological solutions.”

“The figures on impoundments for dogs this June/July are very similar to last year’s June/July figures. It’s great we’re not seeing an increase in dogs being surrendered as other parts of the state are. We thank all the very responsible pet owners in our Shire,” Mr Madden told the Moorabool News.

“For us, it really is a perfect storm that is impacting our ability to move animals into their forever homes, which we know is the best place for them,” RSPCA Victoria Animal Care Manager, Nadia Peiris, said.

“We have had some instances of surrendered dogs being hard to rehome, so if you are thinking of giving a rescue dog a ‘fur-ever’ home, please check in with us as we may have your next pet right here waiting for you.”
At the Australia National Championships held in Adelaide in July, the Intermediate team Electrik Force came third in the Technical Drill, and the Senior Electrikaires achieved second place in Thematic Drill and third in the Thematic Dance competition.
To ease pressure on its shelters, RSPCA Victoria ran ‘Hundred Dollar Hounds’ on Saturday 20 August, adopting out microchipped, vaccinated, desexed and behaviour checked dogs for just $100.

Various categories begin with Basic Drill and Technical Drill Routines with the ultimate being Thematic DanceDrill, where teams present dazzling routines to their favourite music or theme.
President Tess Falconer said the club trains weekly in Bacchus Marsh and competes in four state competitions yearly, plus the annual state championship.
RSPCA Victoria has reported this month that its shelters are operating at capacity for the first time since 2017, due to a number of factors including “fewer reclaims of stray and lost animals that come to RSPCA via councils, more animals with behaviours that require retraining prior to adoption and a decline in adoption applications”.
But Moorabool Shire’s figures for dog impoundments have not skyrocketed in the way many other Victorian LGAs’ have, with Council CEO Derek Madden praising local dog owners for helping Moorabool avoid the issue.
A record number of dogs have arrived at pounds across Victoria over a 12-month period, but Moorabool has ‘fur-tunately’ been an exception to the sad statistics. A surge in surrendered dogs began just before Christmas last year and has shown no sign of slowing down, with close to 150 dogs a month this year compared to 50 dogs towards the end of 2021.
“In fact, while dogs and cats make up the majority of the animals in our care, RSPCA Victoria is currently operating at capacity for all animals. The public can help us by coming into our shelters to adopt dogs, cats, rabbits or guinea pigs.”
“The junior team, along with the masters' team performed well, although they did not place, they had a fantastic experience,” Ms Falconer said.
Many club members live in and around Bacchus Marsh and Melton, but some come from as far afield as Bendigo, Geelong, Point Cook, Kilmore, Broadford and Maryborough. The club has five age groups, and participants range from a four-year-old to a woman in her 70s.
DrillDancing provides opportunities for physical activity, improved posture, teamwork and coordination.
“The DrillDance teams perform exciting and challenging routines in categories such as Dance, Prop and Drill-Team and choose their costumes and music to match the theme of each performance,” she said.

“Our introduction of the Snap Send Solve app means it is now even easier for customers in our community to report a fault, like a water main leak, and for us to then resolve problems swiftly,” he said. The technology supports customers to send reports in real time, knowing the correct authority will receive them, based on the geo-location of the image and report. Reports for water and sewer faults are sent to the CHW Works Management Centre team to prioritise the works for their response.
Now is the time to get the camera out that will quickly help to resolve water faults

Mr Rodda had his best game against Lake Wendouree in June, kicking nine goals, and also kicked a bag of eight against Melton South in April. Across the season, he kicked an average of 3.5 goals per game.

“I’m pretty happy about it, but I was quite inaccurate this year. I was lucky enough to come away with it, equal with Ryan Carter. I’m not sure there’s any secret to kicking goals, I probably should’ve added to the tally through the year, I think I had one game against Ballarat where I kicked three goals eight points or something,” he told the Moorabool News. “A lot of the younger blokes on the team have really matured and taken their game to another level, they’ve obviously found their feet in senior footy throughout the year. Hopefully that puts us in good stead for the finals.”TheDevils finished in fourth this season, with their ‘Road to Redemption’ campaign after last year’s winless season, taking them to an elimination final against reigning dual premiers East Point. Mr Rodda said it was rewarding being part of the Devils’ redemption story. “Hopefully we can give the competition a bit of a shake-up, it’d be good, especially for the supporters after a winless season last year. It’s been something to cheer for for them, and hopefully there’s a few more weeks of cheering ahead for them,” he said.
Central Highlands Water (CHW) is inviting customers to get snapping to help resolve any water or wastewater service problems, quickly and easily.
For any emergency or urgent water or sewerage issues, CHW asks that customers please phone 1800 061 514, available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
Sharpshooter shares top honours
Jeff Haydon, CHW’s Managing Director said supporting their customers is extremely important to them.
CHW has partnered with Snap Send Solve, a free app which enables customers to simply report non-urgent water and sewer faults. Through the app, customers can photograph a problem, add some basic details and send it via the app. The information is then directed to the appropriate team for action, with the customer kept informed of the progress, and when the work is completed.
Another Darley Devil has been crowned the leading goalkicker for his grade in the Ballarat Football League, tying for this year’s Tony Lockett Medal after a stellar season. Nick Rodda made it to a league-topping 56 goals in his first Senior season for the Devils, sharing the honour with Melton’s Ryan Carter, who kicked 10 goals in the Bloods’ final home and away match. Rodda only kicked one goal in the final game of the season. Mr Rodda was modest about the achievement, saying he “probably left a lot of goals out there” and praising his teammates for contributing to a remarkable turnaround compared to last season.

Two Moorabool teenagers will travel on a trip of the lifetime to Turkey in October, and they will be representing Australia. Justin Robins from Bacchus Marsh and James Simone from Merrimu both aged 14, have been selected to represent Australia at the Junior World Karate Championships 2022 in Konya, Turkey. Justin will compete in the cadet Kumite 57-63kg division, with James in the cadet Kumite 52-57kg division. The age group for cadet competitors is from 14 to 15 years, and only the single best for each division from across Australia is selected.Theboys’ achievement is even more notable as they are at the cadets’ younger end of the ageJuniorrange.World Championships are held every second year, with both boys competing in the karate Kumite (sparring) method. Kumite is where an athlete trains against an adversary. Justin chose it “because it is fast, and you have to think on your feet.”

Central Highlands Water (CHW) has released a ‘5-year Price Submission Summary’ and is asking for feedback from communities across its service region. Outlining prices and services for 2023 –2028, the Summary has been shaped by feedback received over the past 12 months.
Justin and James represented Victoria in Rockhampton, winning three medals each. Fellow athletes from the Shindo club took away 17 gold, eight silver, and 14 bronze medals, a record for the club, with medalists from nine years old to veteran level.

“We’re planning a record $256 million investment over the next five years, up from the $149 million during the current capital program. We have listened to our community and, based on their feedback, we have developed three key themes, which include customer care, equity, and sustainability to meet our customers’ needs.
“The submission balances affordability with the need for investment in sewer services for future generations, water security upgrades in response to climate change, customer focused digital technologies, and infrastructure to support community growth across the region,” Mr Haydon said.
CHW also plans to work closely with partners, including Traditional Owners, to develop its services, and produce 100 per cent of its electricity via renewable energy byThe2025.current average annual household water and wastewater charge for CHW customers is $1,234, which equates to $3.38 per day for clean drinking water and removal and treatment of all wastewater.

Customer engagement already completed by CHW has shaped a proposed pricing pathway with a CPI increase only for the first year (2023 – 2024), followed by CPI +1 per cent per annum from 2024 – 2028. This represents real price increases averaging less than one per cent per annum over the five-year period.
“My final goal at the moment is to win at the senior level World Championships and ultimately win an Olympic medal when Karate becomes an official Olympic sport,” Justin said with a big smile.
“We will continue to improve our support to all our customers, particularly those in need, by doubling to $2.5 million over the five-year period for our vulnerable customers.”
The boys have represented Victoria since they were nine years old and represented Australia at the Oceania Karate Championships in June this year.
Justin’s mum Kerry said each competitor could touch his opponent with his feet or hands but not inflict hurt or pain. “It is all about respect and control,” she said.
CHW Managing Director, Jeff Haydon, said the company was working to invest heavily in the communities it serves, while also keeping price rises low.
James and Justin will head to Turkey for the World Championships after competing at the South Australian Open competition in June.
Justin and James train at Shindo Karate Academy in Bacchus Marsh under the close watch of Victorian and National Coach Sensei Wayne Noble, Sensei Max Noble and Sempai Ben de Bortolli. Upon completion of the National Karate Championships in Rockhampton on August 6, the announcement was made of the Australian team selected for the Junior World Championship
The Summary is part of CHW’s obligations to the Essential Services Commission (ESC), which requires a pricing submission every 5 years.
“There is an amazing discipline in Kumite and physical well-being.”

“I was happy that he came back to me tonight. I think the track is fast because I felt like I was dawdling through the middle there. And it was relatively cheap, but the mile rate was still pretty quick and he did that pretty well.” The win completed a double for Andy and Kate Gath after Pull The Other Leg made it two wins from two Australian starts with a classy win in the DNR Logistics Pace. The former Kiwi scored by more than 9m in a mile rate of 1:54.6m over the 1720m trip.
The three-year-old showed scintillating gate speed to lead the field from gate seven and was never headed on his way to a dominant 14m victory. He rattled off closing quarters of 28sec and 27.1sec to defeat Hugo Rocks (Ash Herbertson/James Herbertson) and Ozzie Playboy (Julie Douglas/Jack Laugher) in a mile rate of 1:54.6min for the 2240m trip. Gath told thetrots.com.au he was unsure exactly what lie ahead for Catch A Wave en route to the October 8 Derby, but was pleased with the professionalism on show in his 10th career win. “I’m just relieved he bounced back and it was a step forward manners wise,” Gath said. Driver Kate Gath was in awe of Catch A Wave’s early zip.
The final Cross Country meet for the season was held on Saturday 20 August at Masons Lane Reserve. The theme was ‘Pink Day’ where everyone dressed up and donations were collected for the Breast Cancer Network Australia. All races were conducted under a handicap format, calculated on each athlete’s average performance for the season. A whopping 37 PBs were recorded on the day.

Geoff Webster landed a training double with Dougs Babe and Belmont Royale, while Daryl Douglas scored two driving wins thanks to Interest Free’s victory in the night’s feature – the $40,000 VHRC Caduceus Victoria Sires Classic – and Art Of Sheng Li’s swooping performance in the HBV Stallion Guide Amarillen Matriarch Pace (second heat).
“His gate speed is something else,” she said. “I’ve driven some fast horses off the gate. Blatant Lie many years ago - he was exceptionally fast – but this guy, I was just a passenger out the gate tonight.
The Champion athletes were announced.
The Open age athletes were first to compete, racing three laps of a 1km course. Sam White was off scratch and endeavoured to run down the field of athletes. Melton’s Allyson Currall led for the first 1km with Braydn Rich (BM) slowly closing in. In the final kilometre, Sam White (BM) overtook the entire field, racing to another impressive PB performance, taking line honours in a time of 10.40.22 mins. A fast-finishing Elise Cook (BM) crossed the line in 2nd place, while Braydn and Allyson fought it out for the minor placings with Braydn dipping at the line to claim 3rd place. All competitors recorded big PBs. The Under 6s were next up for their 500m event. Front marker Victoria Hannam (BM) got off to her familiar quick start and held off a fast-finishing field of competitors to take line honours with a PB of 2:48.08 mins. Hendrix Wake (BM) recorded the fastest time – 2:13.62 mins. The Under 7 & 8 athletes competed over a 1km distance. Gisborne’s Olivia Callister was the front marker and relished the opportunity to lead the event. Olivia went on to take the win, claiming line honours and also a PB. Bacchus Marsh’s Emilia Ibrahim recorded the fastest time with a PB of 4:03.59 mins. In the Under 9/10 1.5km event, once again the front marker claimed line honoursKiara Callister (Gisborne) making it a double for the family. Zeke Horne (BM) recorded the fastest time – 5:29.35 mins. Melton’s Alexis Karmiste claimed line honours in the combined Under 11/12 2km event. While a return to form, saw Patrick Lovett (BM) record the fastest time of 7:41.10 mins.Atthe conclusion of all races, athletes, friends and family came together for the end of season Cross Country presentations.

“I didn’t fire him off the arm, that was just him doing his thing. “He settled pretty good after. We do have a little bit of pulling gear on him to get him to settle. As you saw last time in, he was leading and getting too keen, ripping up the back too hard and it wasn’t doing him any good.
Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics
By Tim O'Connor (HRV) It’s onwards and upwards towards the Victoria Derby for excitement machine Catch A Wave, who bounced back from a shock defeat in devastating style on Saturday night at Tabcorp Park Melton. Gear malfunction was blamed for the Andy Gath-trained star’s upset loss in the heat of the Alabar Vicbred Championship, but he could barely have been more impressive in winning the Group 3 final at Tabcorp Park seven days later.
Junior Champions - Fletcher Reid and Emilia Ibrahim. Intermediate Champions - Joshua Askew and Anni Clarke Senior Champions - Tyler Vanotti and Elise Cook.Encouragement awards were presented to Archie Clarke and Ivy Wooding (Junior), Ben Wooding and Alexis Karmiste (Intermediate) and Braydn Rich & Allyson Currall (Senior). The following athletes received their Bronze Shields after completing 25 Centre runs –Harry Johansen, Iyla Robinson, James White, Samuel White. It was a very even competition and results could be quite different at their Calisthenics Victoria State Titles competition in three weeks, which will be their final competition for the year. The win guarantees the Devils a semifinal meeting against Ballarat this Sunday. Sure, the Kangas would lament their inaccuracies (1.7 in the last qtr) but credit to the Devils back six and support crew for holding on under immense finals pressure. Players from both sides had barely enough energy to celebrate or commiserate at the final siren. Any last efforts in the immediate aftermath were spent purely on a handshake or embrace -recognition and respect for an old fashioned battle that went down to the wire. Devils small forward Dylan Bishop kicked a point to give Dan Jordan’s men the lead in time-on before stoppage after stoppage played out deep in East Point’s front half for the best part of ten minutes before the game ended. Kangas Captain Matty Johnston and Mickitja RottumahOnus led the charge in the second half, either waltzing out of stoppage or with their run and carry just as the Devils looked to be tiring. But the ‘Brett Bewley-less’ Devils blend of youth and experience down back, combined with some Kangas wasted opportunities on goal, amounted to a wholesale, morale boosting win for one, and heartbreak, disappointment for the other. The highlights reel will be a tough assignment for the techs. So where do we start? For the winners, Bailey Young was arguably best on ground for his four quarter effort ahead of a host of defenders led by Matthew Brett and Mace Cousins. Bigman Trent Angwin was terrific in the air and was influential between the arcs providing a target for the Devils all day. Darley’s (albeit) match-winning return of seven goals was shared across seven players.

For East Point, finishing near plus 20 for inside 50s in a game they won just one quarter, says a lot for their final quarter dominance. But alas, couldn’t get it done and lost no admirers for their effort. On a tough day for forwards in unassuming breezy conditions, the Kangas managed just five goals, shared among five individual players. Evidently, it was the Kangas lowest score of the season. The numbers didn’t lie heading in, giving every indication this final was going to be a close one. For the record, the Kangas averaged seven more points (FOR) per game while the Devils were conceding seven less points (AGST) per game to suggest a draw could’ve be on the cards. What the coaches said DanOverallJordan (Darley) - I thought we were more efficient in key moments during the first three quarters. But full credit to East Point, they kept coming at us in the last. In the end we were just happy to hang on in a tight one that could’ve gone either way. Jake Bridges (East Point) - We can’t all play a winning game, someone is sure to lose, yet we can play so that our name, no-one may dare accuse. That when the Master referee scores against our name, it won’t be whether we’ve won or lost, but how we have played the game.

The first week of finals saw our Devils U19’s and Seniors playing at City Oval. The U19’s played a solid and tough game of football but unfortunately, after leading in the last quarter they couldn’t find a way to finish the game off strong and ended the match losing by only 8 points. This was our U19’s first finals appearance since joining the BFNL in 1997, so full credit and congratulations go to Travis Edwards, his assistants, and all the players on a terrific year. Hopefully, we see many of the boys move onto senior football next year. The seniors started the game off well and lead by 10 points at half time. They struggled in the second half, only kicking 3 goals. East Point’s inaccurate kicking certainly kept us in the game and scores were level until we kicked a point and held East Point at bay for the last three minutes of the match to win by that one point!
