Kicking almost four goals on average throughout the home and away season, Ms Bessell would no doubt be an inspiration to many young female footballers – to them, she says to “keep following your dreams”. The Darley Women’s team lost to Redan 64 to 22 in the qualifying final on Sunday 14 August, but capitalised on their second chance in the semi final against Bacchus Marsh, winning 117 to 6. They will face Sebastopol in the preliminary final at 12:45 pm on Sunday 28 August, with the winner of that match to face minor premiers Redan in the Grand Final. Ms Bessell is hopeful the Devils can beat the Burra and make it to their first ever Grand Final. “Even just to make it to the Grand Final would be amazing, we’ve never played in one. We’ve proven before we can beat Redan when we’re at our best…if we’re on song we can win, during the day it’s anyone’s game really. It’s a really exciting season for us this year,” she said. “Our goal is to make it to the big dance, but we’re taking it one game at a time. I couldn’t put into words what it’d mean for us to win the flag…Redan’s always been the top team, everyone’s always striving to beat Redan.”

By Lachlan Ellis A sharpshooter has won the BFLW leading goalkicker award, the second year in a row, kicking a whopping 51 goals across 13Kimgames.Bessell from Darley Football Club’s Women’s side missed just one game in the 2022 home and away season, kicking seven goals on three separate occasions, and eight in the Round 9 derby against Bacchus Marsh. Her tally of 51 goals put her well ahead of Redan’s second place Jess Bokma (38 goals) and Sebastopol’s third place Katelene Cook (32 goals), but Ms Bessell is modest about the achievement, stating it wouldn’t have been possible without her team. “It was pretty exciting…it was good to win it this year, seeing as last year a lot of games got cancelled with COVID. It was reassurance that maybe last year I did deserve to win it,” Ms Bessell told the Moorabool News. “But I honestly couldn’t have kicked all those goals if I didn’t have such a great bunch of girls on my team. I’m finishing off their good work really…it’s been a really good season for us, it’s really exciting playing in the team, seeing where we’ve come from. I played in the first year, we were getting beaten by over 200 points some games. “We’ve really built up a strong team…it’s a credit to the coach, the assistant coach, and the girls for really putting in the effort.”

Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan and Council staff hosted State Minister for Regional Development Harriet Shing at Parwan on Saturday 6 August, to officially announce the completion of the gas connection.Counciland L&G Meats have partnered with the State Government in securing gas connection for the site, with the State Government funding $2.7 million from its Building Works package. “This is an excellent outcome and we’re very pleased to have this connection completed, as it’s part of the building blocks to being able to use this land,” Cr Sullivan said. “The Parwan Employment Precinct is a vital piece of land in our Shire, in that it will boost economic and employment growth in our region. “We will be able to attract industrial business and agribusiness and create around 1,500 new jobs. This is not possible without services to the precinct though. Gas connection was a very important piece of the puzzle, so we thank the State Government for its investment.” Cameron Jones is the Development Director and one of four Co-Founders of Parwan+Co (along with Michael, Joe, and Pietro Failli of Westside Meats). The joint venture is planning a protein recovery facility at the PEP to convert organic waste into meat, bone meal, and tallow – the latter of which can be used as a biofuel. Mr Jones said the gas connection was a big step for Parwan+Co’s long-term plans for the precinct.“Itwas critical enabling infrastructure for not just our first protein factory, but it also provides us with future gas capacity for the entire industrial precinct. Gas is completely unlocked, which is one less headache so to speak,” Mr Jones told the Moorabool News. “The first facility will begin operation early next year, and we’re looking to have the second facility operational around 18 months after that. It’s a bit early to speculate on when all five factories will be done, but it’s kind of a five-to-ten-year plan…probably closer to ten, based on access to raw materials.”

Photo - supplied By Lachlan Ellis Council has approved plans for a horse breeding and training enterprise on Swans Road, Darley, with one objection and one supportive submission received on the application. Applicant Erin Cubley briefly addressed Council at the 17 August Development Assessment Committee (DAC), arguing there was a “real need” for the proposed facility. “Basically we’re wanting to go ahead with an equestrian, not centre as such, but equestrian rehabilitation centre as well as breeding facility. I’ve done a lot of work in the equestrian world over the years ... there is a real need for this at the moment,” Ms Cubley said. “We’ve put a lot of infrastructure on the property because we think it’s a perfectly situated property for it, and obviously we’re just hoping to proceed from there.” Under the proposal, a dwelling would be constructed over three floor levels, with a four stable horse complex and exercise yard already built. Up to eight horses would be living on theOpposingsite. the plans, one nearby landowner wrote that the applicant had “demonstrated a complete lack of respect for the municipal laws”, citing a motorbike track that was “constructed without the required permit”. Council Officers responded that under the Land Management Plan would “require most of the track to be removed for remediation works”, and recommended the application is supported with an approved Farm Management Plan and Land Management Plan in place. Other concerns around “weed infestation, erosion risk and other related environmental concerns” would also be addressed under the Farm Management Plan and Land Management Plan, Council Officers said. Council agreed, with Cr David Edwards moving to approve the motion, Cr Tonia Dudzik seconding it, and all Councillors present voting in favour. Crs Ally Munari and Rod Ward were apologies at the meeting. Victoria Police have celebrated two years since the arrival of its high-tech AW139 Leonardo helicopters, which have brought a new level of service from the Air Wing since their adoption. Three AW139 Leonardo helicopters were purchased by the State Government in 2016 to replace the ageing fleet of AS365N3 Dauphin helicopters, with the first of the AW139s entering service in June 2020, coinciding with the opening of Victoria Police’s 39-storey-tall Spencer Street headquarters. Sporting greater endurance and range than their Dauphin predecessors, the AW139s reached an impressive 5,000 hours of operator in March this year, and feature camera, wire cutters, and rescue hoist for policing operations. The Victoria Police Air Wing provides regular aerial patrols of metropolitan Melbourne and observation with tactical assistance for ground units on operational tasks. They also provide assistance during land and maritime search and rescue incidents, traffic observations for ground units, specialist unit support during incidents and the urgent transportation of members and equipment. The AW139 has also been used by Ambulance Victoria since 2016.

Mr Jones also thanked Moorabool Shire Council for its support in organising the City Gate Gas Project. “The group worked very collaboratively with Moorabool for the delivery of the City Gate project … Council was the proponent for the project, they had to chair meetings and run project control group discussions. Their team was very prudent and disciplined in how they delivered the infrastructure on time, and it really helped to deliver this piece of infrastructure,” he said. The precinct also aims to reduce the number of Moorabool residents who need to leave Moorabool for work, with Council CEO Derek Madden stating that the PEP “has the potential to deliver employment opportunities to more than 1,500 people and will also help redress the large number of people leaving the Shire daily for employment”.Councilplans to continuing advocating for funding for the PEP, with electricity connection still required to complete the services on site.

A wonderland adventure

This year’s Variety bash began in Melbourne, travelling to Beechworth, Cobar, Broken Hill, and Marree in New South Wales, then onto Birdsville, Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Karumba, Atherton and, finishing in Cairns after an 11-day journey. Variety Bash participants are encouraged to dress up for their journey – Ms Porter is dressed as Alice, while Ms Barby has taken on the appearance of the Queen of Hearts. Ms McIntosh is dressed up as one of the Queen of Hearts’ playing card soldiers. Ms Porter thanked the Bacchus Marsh community and the range of local sponsors that had gotten behind their fundraising efforts. “We don’t have major corporate sponsors; we get out and sell raffle tickets and do things like that. But we are lucky enough to have local people in business such as Arbee Real Estate, Bacchus Marsh Farm Supplies, Bacchus Marsh Towing, H&K Auto, and Hine Signs that have come along and supported us,” she said. “That makes a big difference to getting some funds for the children. Last time we went on the Bash in 2019, the Bash raised $1.8 million in total, so we’re certainly hoping to surpass that. As a team, we’ve raised $70,000 since we began in 2017.”

Daniel Eskander, who also runs a pharmacy in St Arnaud, told Council that the pharmacy would provide a range of benefits for the Gordon community, “especially during these trying times of COVID”.

A team of three women are taking part in a charity event for sick, disabled, and disadvantaged kids, driving from Melbourne all the way to Cairns in Queensland. Elizabeth Porter from Bacchus Marsh is the Captain of ‘Team Wonderland’, hitting the road with long-time friends Liz Barby and Susan McIntosh. “We started doing the Variety Bash in 2017, that year we travelled from Melbourne to Fraser Island. If COVID hadn’t happened we’d be doing our sixth Bash, but this will officially be our fourth,” Ms Porter told the Moorabool News. “We’ve been friends for about 20 years, but we all live in different parts of the country…Liz is from WA and Susan is from Geelong. One day we were sitting around on New Year’s Eve, talking about what we could do to catch up in the future. We all enjoy fundraising, so we said, what about the Variety Bash? “They help children in need, and we thought it’d be a great time for us to get together and drive across Australia with mates. That’s how we got here – we love it, we’re hooked!”

“Some of the things we introduced in St Arnaud were COVID vaccinations, flu vaccines, Webster packing for the elderly, we do delivery, we sort their medication ... even younger families moving into the area, we’ve provided a lot of products and support for them,” Mr Eskander said. “Just having a pharmacist on hand to provide evidence-based advice, especially nowadays, is super important. Hopefully that also attracts other medical professionals to come into Gordon to provide a wholesome treatment to the community asThewell.”recommendation to approve the pharmacy plans was moved by Cr Tonia Dudzik, seconded by Cr David Edwards, and approved by all Councillors present. Ballan District Health & Care (BDHC) was officially acquired by not-for profit aged care and disability services provider mecwacare last year, and the organisation has revealed plans to spend $25 – $30 million on developing a “premium aged care residence” in Ballan. Mecwacare Chief Executive, Michele Lewis, said the facility would become a “destination in demand” once completed. “Mecwacare is excited to build on our commitment to providing high-quality aged care and healthcare services to the Ballan community. Our new aged care development is part of a health care precinct including the Ballan Medical Clinic Allied Health service, pool, and gym. The precinct will allow our future residents to easily access care from our team of general practitioners and allied health providers,” Ms Lewis told the Moorabool News. Ms Lewis said mecwacare is looking forward to “growing our connection with the Ballan community” “If our connection with the Ballan Lioness members and their work on the front gardens is anything to go by, it will be a fabulous partnership.”On-siterooms will include state-of-the-art fittings and finishes, as well as large balconies, lounge, and dining spaces. The residence will feature a cinema, private dining room, café, library, and other amenities. Work on the new aged care residence has already begun, including the refurbishment of an upstairs office which can accommodate an additional 35 staff. The development is expected to be completed by 2024. coming to Ballan

More than ajob —arole with Victoria Police helps keep our community safe.

By Jane Gardner There’s a bit of excitement happening in the arts world in Ballan, and it seems to be gaining momentum. Moorabool resident (and arts entrepreneur) Mike Bradley has been hard at work renovating the old office space at the back of the Seek Accounting building in the main street. Following a few coats of fresh paint, the installation of some new cabinetry and carpet, and with the ever-reliable support from Wombat Regional Arts Network Inc., Mike has opened his building to the local community as a newly branded ‘Art Space’. The inaugural exhibition, ‘The Body’ officially opened on Sunday 7 August, thanks to the creative guidance of Mt Egerton artist and life drawing teacher Ben Creaney. Students of Mr Creaney’s life drawing class have almost 70 of their combined works on display in the refurbished rooms. Mike Bradley, an artist himself says, “I’ve always had a vision to create an arts space for local artists and over time, I hope this might also evolve into a creative space for craft and art workshops.”

Moorabool Shire Council CEO Derek Madden while no damage has occurred on the sites to date, “our preference is that the skate parks remain closed until the projects have fully been completed,” “There’s not long to go until they’ll be ready for action. If the community can wait until all work is completed on site and the parks officially and safely open before they are used, we would be very grateful,” he said. The new skate space at Mill Park will replace the older skate park at the Ballan Recreation Reserve, which will be removed in the coming months. A pump track will complement the new active hub at Mill Park, and will be available for the community to use once the rest of the project is completed and officially opened. By Lachlan Ellis A free forum in Ballan this week will help Council promote live music in the years ahead, and help musicians and businesses connect. The‘Live & Local Music Industry Forum’ is being held at the ballan Mechanics Institute on Wednesday August 24 from 5 pm to 8 pm, providing a valuable opportunity to contribute directly to Council’s plans.

Two brand new skate parks are due to be completed by the end of September, and Moorabool Council is urging eager skateboarders to wait for the projects’ completion to use the parks. The skate parks at Gordon Public Park and Mill Park (Ballan) have been completed, but both spaces also include 3x3m basketball practice courts, which have not yet been finished. Mill Park also requires some landscaping work before it will be ready for use. Skate park specialists CONVIC, who have been contracted to complete the new spaces, have reported that despite temporary fencing being erected around the construction sites, some community members have accessed the site and used the infrastructure that has been installed so far.

“Information from this event, as well as engagement with the community through the micro-festival events will provide a useful basis for the development of a Live Music Action Plan,” a Council spokesperson said. “The forum will pose the question: “What does a thriving live music scene look like?” and will encourage discussion around how best to achieve that vision.”

By Lachlan Ellis Moorabool Shire Council has partnered with two neighbouring councils to boost council operations with new technology, sharing in $750,000 from the State Government. Council has signed on to the Smart Shires Network project, collaborating with Golden Plains and Hepburn Shire Councils to lobby the State Government for funding. Each Council has received $250,000 under Round 2 of the Rural Councils Transformation Grants program, which will be spent developing a Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) across the three Local Government Areas. In total, 30 LoRaWAN gateways will be installed across an area spanning 6,287 km2, establishing an open ‘Internet of Things’ (IoT) network. This network will allow the three councils to monitor and report on existing assets in real-time, with potential uses including monitoring of public toilet and rubbish bin usage to maximise cleaning efficiency, and monitoring patronage at local events. The network will also be available for the community and local businesses to access, to deploy their own sensors for gathering of data relevant to their needs.

Moorabool Shire Council CEO, Derek Madden, said Council was still planning how to best establish the network in Moorabool.“Councilhas co-signed the Smart Shires Network grant, and we look forward to working with Golden Plains and Hepburn Shires to deliver the project. We are still in the process of looking at what how we will roll this out and what it will look like for Moorabool,” Mr Madden told the Moorabool News. Golden Plains Shire Mayor Cr Gavin Gamble thanked the State Government for its support, and said the network would be a great asset for all three communities.

“It’s fantastic to be working alongside our neighbouring councils of Moorabool and Hepburn Shires, with support from the Victorian Government, to deliver a Long-Range Wide Area Network. It is expected this network will deliver savings and efficiencies within our organisations, creating better outcomes for our communities,” Cr Gamble said.

“With the establishment of this network and the installation of IoT sensors across the Shire, Council and other local businesses, farm enterprises and tourism operators will be able to obtain sensor data and insights, supporting datadriven decision making and growth.”

Anyone caught illegally felling or taking timber can face a fine of up to $9,246 and/or a year in prison, as well as risk losing the items used to commit offences, such as chainsaws, vehicles and other associated equipment.

“These ancient and remarkable trees provide important habitat for native or endangered nesting birds, mammals and reptiles they also carry cultural significance for Traditional Owners,” a spokesperson said.Parks Victoria, the Conservation Regulator, Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning and Victoria Police work together to curb this destructive behaviour.

Parks Victoria need your help, as illegal firewood theft is a statewide problem. They are requesting if your purchase firewood, you ensure you are not inadvertently supporting this behaviour by asking your supplier the following: - Where does your wood come from? It should be sourced from a wholesale supplier, commercial wood lot or private land with the permission of the landowner.

- Can I get a receipt? If your firewood merchant won’t provide a tax receipt with a business name and ABN listed, you should wonder why. - Why is the wood so cheap? If you’re buying firewood through social media websites, ask your supplier why. - If they can't answer these questions, it could be because it has been obtained illegally from public land such as national parks or state forests. Parks Victoria encourage people to report any suspicious behaviour to 13 19 63.

Parks Victoria estimate this winter alone, over 3000 trees have been illegally cut down in parks and forests across Victoria, including a 350–400-year-old Red River Gum.

Subsidy for unsafe to safe Outrage at fishingproposedban

“Around 70 per cent of people who have lost their lives on our roads were in vehicles more than ten years old, and being in a safer vehicle can make the difference between ending up in hospital or avoiding a crash altogether,” Mr Carroll said. “We know that cost is a real barrier for many young Victorians when it comes to choosing a safe and modern car – that is why this program is critical in ensuring they pick a vehicle with features that could ultimately save their life.”

Section 409 of the proposed ‘Crown Land (Reserves) (Metropolitan and Regional Parks) Regulations’ states that a land manager may set aside an area of a regional parks “as an area where attempting to take fish is prohibited”, with a penalty of 10 penalty units applying to anyone taking or attempting to take fish in that area. Ten penalty units equates to $1,849.20 as of 1 July 2022.

EST.THE1973

Up to 150 young regional Victorians will receive a $5,000 subsidy from the State Government, to replace their old car with a newer, safer model. The unsafe2safe trial has entered its second phase, inviting regional Victorians from the ages of 18 to 25 to apply for the subsidy, to purchase a vehicle with new safety features such as Autonomous Emergency Braking and Lane Keep ApplicantsAssist.must be the registered owner of a vehicle that is 16 years old or older, that has an ANCAP safety rating of 1 or 2 stars, or is unrated. The applicant must also hold a Victorian driver licence. The program is aimed at young drivers given they are at the greatest risk of being involved in a crash. Young regional Victorians driving older cars in particular are 15 times more likely to be killed in a car crash, compared to the state Memberaverage.forMelton, Steve McGhie, said it was great to have Moorabool drivers eligible for this phase of the program. “Young drivers across the Moorabool region can now apply to take part in the unsafe2safe trial and head out on the roads more safely,” Mr McGhie said. “This program is critical to ensuring young drivers right across Moorabool can purchase a vehicle that will not only prevent serious road accidents, but more importantly, save their life.”Minister for Roads and Road Safety, Ben Carroll, said the statistics made it clear why unsafe2safe was such an important program.

For more information on eligibility and to apply for the unsafe2safe trial, visit engage.vic. gov.au/unsafe2safe. Expressions of interest can be submitted until 4 September 2022. The state’s peak recreational fishing body has expressed its anger at proposed regulations which could see children and families banned from recreational fishing in metropolitan lakes and rivers.

VRFish Chair Rob Loats said the group was outraged at the proposal, which “provide for bans to recreational fishing on specified metropolitan and regional parklands such as Albert Park, Karkarook Park, Werribee River…amongst others”. “Families fishing in metropolitan and regional lakes does not increase the risk to public safety nor environment. Recreational fishing in the local lake is a safe and beneficial activity that creates treasured family memories,” Mr Loats said. “Since 2015, recreational fishers have invested more than $2 million per year of recreational fishing licence fees into recreational fishing initiatives, including to boost family fishing in park lakes. “This proposal is clearly an attack on recreational fishing and again shows how out of touch Minister for the Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, is with local community values.”

VRFish is encouraging recreational fishers to email Premier Daniel Andrews and Minister for Fishing and Boating, Sonya Kilkenny, to let them know the community’s thoughts on the proposed regulations.

“This year our detector dog program celebrates 30 years of helping to protect Australia from exotic pests and diseases, which is definitely a ‘paws’ for a celebration.” Apply to be a detector dog handler at www.awejobs.nga.net.

• Last financial year the detector dogs intercepted approximately 16,000 biosecurity risk items.

Preparing for the future

services

• On average, detector dogs can be expected to find up to 9000 biosecurity risk items during their working life. The three most common items the detector dogs find are meat, seeds and fruit.

First Assistant Secretary of Biosecurity Operations at the department Colin Hunter said Australia’s detector dog program is world class in detecting biosecurity risk items in the airport, seaport and mail pathways. “The biosecurity detector dog program is just one of the detection tools used by our department,” Mr Hunter said. “Being a detector dog handler and working with dogs daily is a fun job that also plays an important role in Australia’s biosecurity system. “We’re looking for candidates who are engaging, resilient and results driven. “To be a biosecurity detector dog handler, you need to be a fully accredited and operational biosecurity officer. This is why, in recent times, recruitment for these positions has been an internal process. “This new recruitment round is open to the general public and we encourage all who are interested to apply. “Successful applicants will receive biosecurity foundation training as well as detector dog handler training to prepare them for the scenarios they may experience when deployed across our operation pathways. “With international travel increasing following the opening of borders after COVID, and increased volumes in the mail and seaport pathways, the department requires additional biosecurity detector dog handlers to join the front line of biosecurity.“It’sagreat opportunity to join this specialised team and work with amazing canine and human colleagues to help protect Australia against biosecurity risks. “Detector dogs are fast, versatile and mobile with a key role in strengthening our biosecurity systems in response to a growing biosecurity threat.

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF) is recruiting new biosecurity detector dog handlers, with applications already open.

CHW has also committed to improving waterway health, particularly supporting Traditional Owners and environmental values in the Moorabool River. “We are working with Moorabool Shire Council to support town structure planning and community engagement to make sure we meet the needs of the community when planning water and sewerage system upgrades,” CHW’s spokesperson said. The UWS details both short-term actions required (up to 5 years) and longer-term actions, with progress reports published every 12 months in the Annual Water Outlook, and full revisions and updates completed every five years. The full reports are available at www.chw.net.au/uws.

There are ‘pawsome’ job opportunities available to the general public, and it is something a little bit different.

Two major water plans have been released by Central Highlands Water (CHW), aimed at keeping safe, reliable, and affordable for years to come. In preparation for the next 50 years, the water authority released the 2022 Urban Water Strategy (UWS) and 2022 Drought Preparedness Plan on 1 August, considering factors such as population growth, climate change, and events which may cause a short-term reduction in water availability. Actions to be taken include strengthened education programs, the use of digital technology to support management of water use, and greening of public open spaces with alternative water sources. A CHW spokesperson said the company was working with Moorabool Shire Council and Traditional Owners to accommodate population growth and improve the environment.“CHW’sUrban Water Strategy and Drought Preparedness Plan is based on extensive community engagement and feedback from our customers. It recognises the population throughout the region, including proposed growth areas in the Moorabool Shire. We manage the Ballarat and District water supply system, which provides water to towns in the Moorabool Shire, including Ballan and Gordon,” CHW’s spokesperson told the Moorabool News. “Population growth and climate change are affecting our water supply systems. To address these challenges, we continue to plan and investigate alternative water supply sources. We will implement these sources along with recycled water opportunities. We will support initiatives to find more water for environmental, cultural, and recreational purposes. We will also promote water conservation and efficiency.”

Ballan Brumbies Basketball Results – Week ending Saturday 20 August

Taking on the bottom of the table Wildcats should have been a fairly easy win for the finals bound Under 12 Boys C Ballan Brumbies but, playing with just four players - the two missing were leading scorers Eli Rogers and Harry Garnermade this a danger match. The game was a tight affair early on, the big men dominating as Josh Kennedy for Wildcats and Angus Eskdale for Ballan each scoring their teams opening six points. Ballan kept creeping ahead by a basket or two, but Wildcats answered every Brumbies push, Kennedy’s shooting and Chace Blomley’s speed causing Ballan problems. Ballan coach Riley Dart was concerned about his team running themselves into the ground too early as his boys looked to push the pace. Brumbies were getting good looks at the basket, though Lachlan Prosser and Brody Grech were not able to finish with their usual class. Prosser started to find his range, connecting on a gorgeous left hand reverse layup and Marley Solterbeck followed with a coast-to-coast drive. Again, Wildcats came back through Kennedy and Blomley to tie the game at 20 apiece at the half. Both teams were noticeably tiring in the 2nd half which saw defences at either end open up. Ballan took advantage as Prosser repeatedly carved his way to the basket. When he wasn’t scoring (he finished with a game high 16 points) he was kicking out to Grech for open shots.

In return we offer: a welcoming, supportive team

Defensively, Ballan cleverly negated their numerical disadvantage by almost ignoring Wildcats weaker offensive players, daring them to shoot and trusting Grech and Eskdale to control the defensive boards. That, in turn, allowed Prosser and especially Solterbeck, who had a dynamite defensive game, to apply more ball pressure. With Wildcats offense grinding to a halt the Brumbies were able to pounce. Late baskets to each of Ballan’s foursome in the final few minutes seeing the lead stretch out to a comfortable level. A brave win by the undermanned Brumbies, eventually prevailing 41-32.

LOCHINVAR Art had a torrid time on his race track return but would have lost few admirers from his brave second behind a blistering Julie Douglas runner. Torrid Saint was relentless at the head of affairs to have the poorly drawn Grand Circuit champ chasing throughout the short distance sprint, the Hylands My Lightning Blue Free For All. The six-year-old won in a personal best 1:51.7 mile rate in Jack Laugher’s hands, including a 27.6-second third quarter as Lochinvar Art loomed on his outside. “We had that advantage from the start and had the horse good enough to utilise it and he’s gone super,” Laugher said. “He’s probably the fastest horse I’ve driven as far as coming with one run, and obviously his gate speed as well. “Not a lot of horses can peel out and run a quarter that he’s got in him. It’s just a great asset that he’s got. We don’t have to drive him any certain way, but he does have that really good turn of foot and high speed.” It was all on display at Tabcorp Park Melton, with Torrid Saint zipping to the front from gate five despite Boncel Benjamin having also been lively on his inside. Lochinvar Art advanced to his outside just after the bell but Torrid Saint was able to hold him at bay, winning by 2.9 metres while Tango Tara stormed into third with an eye-catching finalLaugherburst.said the win showed the winner’s significant growth, having looked likely of late but not actually broken through to score since November last year. “Early on he was never a superstar by any means, and he’s just progressively gotten better and better,” he said. “It probably hasn’t shocked the smart people around him, but the way he goes about it, he’s just progressed so much. It’s taken him a while, but he’s got to that top level and turned into a super horse. “Tonight was just to see where we are, obviously Lochinvar Art’s going to improve off that run. A couple more runs time the results may be different, who knows, but in the future we’ve got different avenues and ways we can drive him. It’s a credit to everyone involved.”

By Todd Whelan Sunbury finished their season on a high and ‘in the black’ surpassing 100 per cent for and against, on their way to a resounding 65 point win over Bacchus Marsh at the Clarke Oval last Saturday. The Lions finished off their season with four wins from their last six games, an encouraging base for next season under Travis Hodgson who will lead the club into a fourth year in 2023. The Cobras on the other hand capitulated to a fifth loss in six games ending their season in eighth place with seven wins. Veteran forward Leigh Brennan (five goals) shows no signs of ageing, leading a charge of eight Lions players to hit the scoreboard. The Lions led from start to finish and virtually put this game to bed by quarter time despite having had the advantage with the breeze.

Cobras no match for Lions

Lions stand-outs Tyson Lever and Harry Minton-Connell continued their run of good form while the progression of youth trends in the right direction. Jack Hannett and Jack Newitt topped the list for as many as 12 candidates among best on ground conversations.

By Todd Whelan Dan Jordan’s Devils made it three wins on the trot to secure fourth placing on the BFNL ladder as the home and away season concluded last weekend. An Elimination Final against East Point in Ballarat this Sunday ‘Mature’awaits.wasthe buzz word used by Jordan in the aftermath that best described the nature of performance from his seemingly young group. While midfield leaders Dylan Landt (three goals) and Luther Baker (two goals) stood up in the second half in the absence of Brett Bewley (managed), it was the depth of lesser like contributors that proved significant. It was the Devils fifth win in eight home games and the second win against top six opposition in the last month. While external expectation on the Devils chances in their return to finals are tempered, their willingness to compete cannot be denied. Only Melton and Ballarat have won more games. Surely spirited momentum and a recent win over East Point, albeit in the ‘East’, gives them some hope overcoming the reigning dual Premiers. Darley’s younger brigade continue to grow and were able to hit the scoreboard on Saturday as leading forward Nick Rodda (one goal) had his hands full, often outnumbered 3-1 in the air. While North bigman Cam McCallum was imposing in the ruck with another haul of hit-outs, credit must be given to the Devils Ayden Tanner for his combative intent and workrate.NorthBallarat did hit the lead in the third term arresting a 19 point deficit at the main break before the Devils steadied at the 25 minute mark to regain the advantage at the final change. In a nutshell, the Devils kicked six of the last nine goals of the game to get the job done.

The Cobras, seemingly bereft of the fight we saw earlier in the year could manage just six goals on a quiet day for the visiting forwards. Six indiviudual Cobras goalkickers represented their major returns on the scoreboard while young combative ruckman Spencer Meagher was named best for the losing side. Defenders Daniel Veldon, Dominic Mieson and Xavier Jenks toiled manfully behind the ball while Tom German and Riley Stuhldrier were again serviceable contributors in the red, yellow and black. Both are proud clubs and will prepare for their journey back to finals, for an eighth and ninth place finish, simply won’t do.

It has been a successful season for all of our teams and both E and D grades have shown great improvements and it will be exciting to see what they will bring to next season.

The 19’s started the game off well against 3rd placed North Ballarat on Saturday and at one stage, led by 35 points. Unfortunately, a last quarter fade out saw the boys lose by 20 points. Will Johnson kicked 3 goals and was named best, along with Daniel Lalor and Hyson Fawcett. The boys finished 5th on the ladder and will play Sunbury in an elimination final on Sunday. The reserves put in a solid effort but were unfortunately beaten by 48 points. Dale Murley has done a terrific job with the boys, not only fielding a team every week but coaching them to 6 winning matches.
