Give that she may grow

By Lachlan Ellis She is just six years old, has been in and out of hospital since birth, and within the next six months, doctors at the Royal Children’s Hospital will be required to remove part of her spine in a 15-week procedure.

Emeliah Flenley lives in Darley with her parents and two brothers, and is in constant pain from severe scoliosis, an abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. She also suffers from dwarfism, autism, and developmental delay, and was born without thumbs – surgery gave her thumbs made from her index fingers.

The family are not asking for money, but one local business in Ballan where her grandfather Wally Roberts works, took matters into their own hands.

Asha Shanahan, who owns and operates Crossroads Trading with husband Bernie, said supporting the family was simply the right thing to do.

“It all started with a couple of donation tins on the counter of our store,” she told the Moorabool News.

“There has been massive support since day one and we didn’t think twice about it because Wally is the kind of bloke that if you needed help, he would drop everything to do that. He’s such a caring, giving man himself. So, we figured would help him by helping his daughter and granddaughter,” she said.

Ms Shanahan put the story on their business social media page and the generous donations have been rolling in.

“We set a goal of $10,000, as that is the minimum amount that is needed to pay for the family’s accommodation and expenses whilst they ‘live’ in Ronald McDonald House for at least three months,” she said.

The family does not qualify for ‘free’ accommodation as they live within the 100km limit.

A sign of culture

By Lachlan Ellis Eye-catching indigenous artwork has been established at Lal Lal Reservoir, as part of a new focus to commission Traditional Owner artwork at some of the state’s water catchments.

Wadawurrung man Billy-Jay O’Toole is the artist responsible for the vibrant new signage at Lal Lal, and said it represents the land and the Lal Lal Falls, which lies on Wadawurrung Country and is culturally significant to the Wadawurrung People and the Peoples of the Kulin Nation.

It is a place of story relating to Bunjil the eagle, a creator deity and culture hero of the Kulin Nation, and one of two ‘moiety ancestors’, the other being Waang the crow.

“One of the main focuses of the design is around water – our rivers, creeks, and reservoirs. I also did a few U shapes to symbolise the people that work around them and manage them. The rest of the barking symbolises the earth outside of the reservoirs, including ochre-coloured dots and traditional markings as well,” Mr O’Toole told the Moorabool News.

The opportunity came about due to a collaborative project between Central Highlands and Barwon Water authorities, which aims to have more Traditional Owner artwork at reservoirs managed by the two water companies.

“It’s a huge honour. To have my artwork showcased at a culturally significant site like Lal Lal means the absolute world to me,” he said.

“My involvement first started with Barwon Water reaching out to me and saying, ‘we’ve got this project we want to roll out in Wadawurrung Country, between Barwon Water and Central Highlands Water’. We went out to check out the possible locations for signage to go, including Lal Lal Reservoir, and it all went from there.”

CHW Executive Manager Environmental Services, Carsten Berberich, said the new interpretive sign told the important First Nations history of the area, while also informing the community of how Lal Lal Reservoir supports them and the environment today.

“This educational installation is the positive outcome of CHW and Barwon Water working together collaboratively, with the guidance of Wadawurrung Traditional Owners and the support of DELWP,” Mr Berberich said.

“This piece takes our approach to signage in a new direction. It incorporates beautiful artwork and cultural heritage information to give a deeper understanding of this facility, and the area, to share with our communities and visitors.”

Barwon Water General Manager Planning, Delivery & Environment, Seamus Butcher, thanked the Wadawurrung Traditional Owners “for their generosity in sharing knowledge and providing cultural guidance on this and other projects”.

“We look forward to having more signage installed at recreational areas at some of our other reservoirs later this year,” Mr Butcher said.

Supporters of the AFL Geelong Cats may recognise the name Billy-Jay O’Toole – he also designed the first-ever indigenous guernsey worn by the Cats, in 2014 and 2015.

“People are walking in just to donate, after seeing the story on social media. We’re very lucky, Ballan is such a generous community. Any amount, no matter how small, will go a long way…they’re a real Aussie battler family,” Ms Shanahan said.

Emeliah’s mum, Tjanna Roberts, said her daughter’s scoliosis had worsened rapidly.

“It is progressing extremely fast, from November 2021 it was a 65-degree curve, as of two months ago it has grown to 94 degrees. Emeliah uses a wheelchair most of the time as she can't walk far without pain, she also has nerve damage in her legs from the tethered spinal cord,” she told the Moorabool News.

“As a family, we try our best to keep Emeliah free from pain.

But I also have two special needs boys who have multiple appointments as well, they have autism, ADHD, my oldest has a cyst on his brain causing migraines, and my youngest son was born with his digestive system not connected. He has had surgeries to fix that, but his heart conditions haven't been corrected yet, so at times it can be stressful trying to do everything in between appointments and making sure we aren't doing too much to aggravate Emeliah's pain.”

Ms Roberts will need to stay with Emeliah and her two sons in Melbourne as they have several months of inpatient stay at hospital, after halo gravity traction surgery, and then growth rod surgery.

That means not only medical costs from daily physio and occupational therapy, but also costs for accommodation, parking, petrol, and more.

They’re also not guaranteed a place at Ronald McDonald House as they don’t yet have an exact date for Emeliah’s surgery – if there’s no room, they will “have to find a cheap motel”.

Ms Roberts estimates the costs will be “a minimum of an extra $600 a week while we are in Melbourne”.

“We appreciate the help, and I am embarrassed to even have to ask for help, but this is going to be impossible without the support.”

“This is such a generous offer by Crossroads Trading, and to reach our $10,000 target would mean the world to us so we can stay together as a family, and support Emeliah to the best of our ability,” Ms Roberts said.

The Black Hill Hotel in Ballarat has also donated a voucher to Emeliah, so she can enjoy a nice dinner or lunch before her major surgeries.

There is no exact date for the surgery however, the family has been advised it will be sometime within the next three to six months.

Annual budget green light

By Lachlan Ellis Council’s latest Budget has passed with the approval of all but one Councillor, who opposed the idea of a 1.75 per cent rates increase, during hardships such as inflation and high petrol prices.

The 2022/23 Annual Budget came before Council at its 22 June Special Meeting, with Woodlands Cr Ally Munari adding an extra paragraph that Council “writes to the Minister for Local Government, fully supporting the Victorian Farmers Federation proposal regarding valuation averaging”.

If this proposal was adopted by the State Government, rates would be charged based on a moving average on property valuations over five years, rather than solely the current yearly valuation.

Cr David Edwards moved the motion to approve the Budget, with Cr Tonia Dudzik seconding the motion.

However, Central Cr Paul Tatchell opposed it, starting a debate.

Cr Edwards said this year’s Budget was “really exciting”, and would deliver enormous benefits to the Moorabool community.

“If you have a look through some of the detail, there’s over $61 million in capital works. That comes on the back of only $37 million of rates, I think that’s a pretty impressive achievement

by Council,” Cr Edwards said.

impressive, calling it “probably one of the best we’ve seen over the past 10 years based on conciseness”, but argued Council needed to be more conservative with taxing and spending, given current hardships.

“It is a very good Budget...in any other circumstance than the current uncertainty, I would comfortably say this is the first Budget, I’d put hand on heart and say it works. But I can’t support it in terms of what I feel will happen in the next couple of years.

When people are doing it tough you hold back, you don’t spend money,” Cr Tatchell said.

“I went to the supermarket the other night to see what everyday people are doing when they get home from work.

I saw a lot of people putting stuff back, and I haven’t seen people do that in Ballan before. I spoke to a couple of people in those aisles and said, ‘How are you travelling?’ The overwhelming response was heating costs are killing

them. The money they need to spend to travel to work has skyrocketed, and the overtime isn’t there,” he said, “It’s time for the three levels of government to ask, ‘What is reasonable?’ I don’t agree with the State Government that you should just put rates up by CPI. I think this is the year we should be brave in Moorabool and say no rate increase.”

Cr Edwards acknowledged the hardships people were going through, but drew a comparison to the Great Depression, arguing that Council spending on big projects would create jobs and stimulate the local economy.

“There are many opportunities that I see within this Budget that will actually help alleviate those potential problems that may come up... when you’re putting $61 million into projects everywhere from Lal Lal to Bacchus Marsh, what that does is creates work locally,” he said.

Cr Edwards said a lot of people get employed not only directly in those projects, but “it’s also the indirect effects on the economy...the pubs, the cafes, the supermarkets, will get money from those people doing the works.”

The Budget was overwhelmingly approved, with Crs Edwards, Dudzik, Munari, Ward, and Berry voting in favour, while Cr Tatchell maintained his opposition.

The first webinar, titled ‘Horses and bushfire – what do we know?’ will be held at 7.30 pm on Wednesday 20 July, and will be presented by Kirrilly Thompson from the University of Newcastle, Andrew McLean from Equitation Science International, and veterinarian Chris Heislers.

Webinars will also be held on 10 August, 24 August, 7 September, and 21 September, with topics ranging from ‘Your vegetation – what you need to know’ to ‘Why get kids involved in the family bushfire plan’.

Digging for black gold

Moorabool News journalist Carol Saffer, explores local outdoor delights

By Carol Saffer As a journalist, I often do strange things while searching for a story.

But last Saturday, kneeling on the ground under a French Oak Tree with my nose in the dirt was a first.

I was sniffing for truffles along with 18 other visitors to Sue and Sharon Daly’s truffle farm in Blakeville.

Abbie, one of two super sleuth canine scent detectives, led Sue and ten of us in the blue team around Truffle Treasures plantation, where we took turns lying, sniffing, and digging up the black gold.

Sharon and Holly gathered the other guests onto their red team, determined to find more than we did.

When I consider that the sisters together with Briody and John, employed as truffle harvesters, do this about four days a week depending on the weather, I realise how labour intensive the work is.

It was a fabulous experience for me, even if it was nine degrees and damp under the tree canopies.

The thrill of finally finding the precious truffles and smelling their earthiness made it worthwhile.

The smelling process, while ungainly is imperative, as it detects the ripeness of the truffles and only ripe ones are harvested.

Sue and Sharon planted 360 trees on their two-acre property when setting up the plantation.

The maintenance of the trees is vital to a successful harvest, as they are inoculated with Tuber melanosporum, the Périgord black truffle fungus.

Simply put, no trees, no truffles.

The Daly sisters planted the trees to create their truffiere in 2007, and in 2011 had the first harvest.

Wombats and rabbits love truffles almost as much as humans, so the sisters installed local animal-proof fencing around the farm.

The first truffles harvested in Australia were from a plantation in Tasmania.

There are currently 1000 Australian truffle farms and

collectively rank as the fourth largest producers of truffles in the world.

At the end of our harvesting, the red and blue teams returned inside to sample what you can do with the truffles.

It is often said that you eat with your eyes, well with truffles; you eat with your nose.

A truffle’s aroma and flavour are hard to describe.

Sue points out there are 94 different aromatics in black truffle, and just like fruit, the aroma profile changes as the truffle ripens.

Our first taste was a slice of warm toast coated with truffle paste; it was simple and delicious.

Next, there was total silence as the contented faces of the 18 visitors sipped and slurped homemade cauliflower soup topped with a dollop of cream and a generous topping of shaved truffle.

I found it hard to pinpoint and describe the flavour. It was savoury, earthy mushroom-like with a hint of sweetness, similar to cinnamon sugar at the end of the palate.

The piece de resistance was the pear semifreddo dessert, served with a slice of pear, hazelnuts and truffle.

Margaret, one of the guests, received her invitation to Truffle Treasures as a birthday gift.

“I loved it, particularly at the end, to get this beautiful and edible taste of what we have seen outside,” she said.

Her companion Jess, a chef, was already planning dishes he could make with the truffles.

Truffle Treasures, located at 68 Sultana Road Blakeville, sell their truffles for $2.50 per gram, weighing 10 to 300 grams.

Most recipes would call for four grams of truffle per person.

Farm-gate sales are available between 1.00pm and 5.00pm most weekends in winter.

Look for the signs on the Ballan-Daylesford Road at Spargo Creek, near Korweinguboora.

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, We are told that renewable energy is the way of the future?

Currently, Australia simply cannot meet its high demand to produce electricity from either coal or gas fired power stations, this is due to push renewable energy such as wind and solar as an alternative replacement.

Electrical power generation is split into 2 categories: A - primary energy production and, B - secondary energy production.

Primary energy production is guaranteed a fuel supply ie; coal, gas or nuclear, secondary energy production has to rely on either the wind or solar, neither of these energy sources are reliable and cannot meet "supply on demand" targets simply due to lack of wind or no sun (night time).

The Labor federal government is now pushing to increase its renewable energy program. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is now pushing to connect power transmission lines to connect solar and wind farms into major city grids under his "renewable energy policy".

Landowners would be forced to give up part of their land under the terms of compulsory acquisition, state governments would have the power of attorney to acquire this land.

I am not an advocate of wind and solar as they simply won't meet our future demands.

My trade background is electrical, and I worked in physics in electrical power generation.

‘Battle axe’ subdivision tick

By Lachlan Ellis A controversial subdivision has been approved by Council, with an extra condition to help alleviate privacy concerns from neighbours.

The application for a three-lot subdivision, vegetation removal, and creation of an access to a transport road zone at 85 Inglis Street and 20 Duncan Street came before the Development Assessment Committee (DAC) on Wednesday 15 June, with a neighbouring landowner addressing Council in objection to the plans.

Linda Small told Council that approval of the application would mean cars going right past her bedroom window, and would also have an effect on local wildlife due to the removal of vegetation.

“We have a resident possum, and possums as you know are a protected species. They are very territorial…they require shrubs for their safety. In the last 12 months 17 trees have been removed from that backyard, which has substantially removed the habitat of possums and other wildlife living there. If the access road is put in, more vegetation will be removed,” Ms Small said.

“The main issue is the proposed access road from Lot 3, that will go past our bedroom windows, about a metre from where our bedrooms are. Any privacy, quiet, et cetera…we’ll have foot traffic and car traffic going past our bedroom [if the application is approved].”

Cr Rod Ward moved to approve the subdivision, with an amendment requiring a metre of landscaping along the western edge of the property, to create a buffer of trees along the driveway and provide more privacy for Ms Small.

The motion was seconded by Cr Paul Tatchell but opposed

by Cr David Edwards, beginning a debate.

Opening the debate, Cr Ward said that he “understood increased population density should be expected” given population growth in Ballan, and he “feels the amended conditions to approve this permit will address the concerns raised by the neighbouring residents”.

Cr Tatchell said he understood the objector’s issue with the subdivision and access road, but with thousands of people

expected to move to Ballan in the next 20 years, “they’ve got to live somewhere”.

“I do accept the issue in relation to battle axe driveways… unfortunately that’s one of the things that happens near a main street. While we have the tool to create a one metre buffer, I feel that’s a sensible addition to this. It’s unlikely this would be successful at VCAT if it was contested,” Cr Tatchell said.

“It makes sense to put the permit through rather than create an expense that’s unlikely to return a successful position for the objector. These are tough, but we’re probably going to see a lot more of them.”

Cr Edwards moved to defer the application, noting that while he didn’t disagree with what fellow Councillors had said, “we can do better”, and Council wouldn’t allow a brandnew development to “have a driveway there within a metre of a bedroom”.

The motion to approve the subdivision with a one metre buffer was supported by the votes of Crs Ward, Tatchell, and Deputy Mayor Cr Tonia Dudzik. With Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan out of the room with a conflict of interest, and Cr Moira Berry an apology at the meeting, the vote was therefore 3 in favour and 2 against, and the motion was carried.

“Merits-based” funding Letters to review welcomed the Editor

By Lachlan Ellis & Helen Tatchell Comments from the newly crowned Minister for Regional Development and Local Government, Catherine King, that local government pool projects must be stacked up on merit to be funded, has been welcomed by Moorabool Shire Council.

Earlier this month, Ms King said a review of Infrastructure Australia was needed to “get it back on track”, with The Age reporting that Labor would “ditch its election promises to communities for new swimming pools or sporting ground upgrades if they do not stack up on a merits-based review”.

Ms King has asked her department to take a “very granular look” at what the previous Coalition government has committed funding to.

“If any of those do not stack up on a merits review, we will not be proceeding with those…they are the ones that are not under the Land Transport Act, they’re the community sporting facilities and those sorts of things,” Ms King said.

Moorabool Shire Council CEO Derek Madden said that was good news for Council’s plans for an indoor pool, with a $15 million Federal Government commitment all that’s required.

“Our indoor pool project has very significant Council funding ($15 million committed) and has State Government funding of $10 million. It has been fully scoped and designed, so it definitely stacks up against some of the proposed pool projects throughout the country,” Mr Madden said.

“We are ready, we have the population, the Council-owned site located, the planning permit and the detailed designs.

With Federal funding to match Council’s contribution, we can get on and build the facility that the community of Moorabool have been waiting generations for.”

In 2013, Ms King was then Minister for Regional Australia and Member for Ballarat and posted on her own website, “KING DELIVERS ON BACCHUS MARSH INDOOR

AQUATIC CENTRE”. The story went on to say, “the Rudd Labor Government today (9 Aug 13) announced $7 million towards the Bacchus Marsh Indoor Aquatic Centre, building on its record of support for strong, prosperous regional and local communities.

“Federal Labor is serious about investing in regional and local communities and helping them to meet future challenges and opportunities,” the story read. “…the funding is a well-deserved win for the community.”

“Today’s (9 Aug 13) announcement will deliver a much needed indoor pool 12 months a year.”

The funding for the project was stated as being “from the latest round of the Regional Development Australia Fund and is already included in the budget.”

In reality, there was a change of government (Tony Abbott defeated Kevin Rudd), and the money was not forthcoming.

One source told the Moorabool News back in 2013, the socalled budgeted funds, “were not signed off”.

Mr Madden said he thanked Ms King for beginning the review, which he believes will show Moorabool’s project to be among the most feasible pool projects in the country.

“There are pool projects where the local Council is committing minimal funds but expecting massive Government commitments, so we feel the review is timely and will highlight the strength of our proposal. The staging and funding model we used could be used for future projects across Australia,” he said.

“Moorabool is very willing to back our own project and commit matching funding from the Federal and State Governments, and we don’t already have a Council-run indoor pool in our Shire so we definitely feel our project would meet the conditions of any audits that Minister King will be undertaking.”

Dear Editor, I write replying to Donna Bridgeman (‘Stop the Bullets’) letter (M/News 21 June 2022).

I was appalled at the emotional outburst by the letter writer, so I checked the Animal Justice Party (AJP) website.

The AJP suggest fertility control. The problem is brumbies may live for 20-years and thus will continue to engage in environmental damage for that period.

The AJP suggest rehoming, for that to be viable the brumbies would need to be rehomed in an area that did not pose an environmental impact and would need to be sterilized or their increasing numbers would require more land that may affect native animals and fauna.

The shooters use thermal imaging to identify the animals to help ensure a clean kill, however no system is perfect, as for bullets flying how else do bullets move. Arcing up over power project name change

By Lachlan Ellis A controversial powerline project has had a name change, but community groups protesting the project say they want a more tangible change than a few words.

The Western Victoria Transmission Network Project (WVTNP) was renamed the ‘Western Renewables Link’ last month by planners AusNet Services, with the company stating the change reflected the focus on transmitting renewable energy.

“The name change is simply to reflect more accurately the important role this project will play in bringing renewable wind and solar energy from the west of the state to the grid for all Victorians to use. It does not impact the final route or our ongoing consultation with the community and landholders,” an AusNet Services spokesperson told the Moorabool News.

“The project is continuing to investigate partial undergrounding options as part of the Environment Effects Statement, which will be lodged later this year.”

AusNet’s spokesperson also drew attention to the current power crisis, which they said, “shows that Australia must commit to long-term plans to ensure we build a system which will secure the future energy needs of every home and business and keep the lights on”.

But numerous groups have formed to oppose the preferred route of the network, and the risks that may come with establishing it through overhead powerlines, such as the Stop AusNet’s Towers group.

Chair of Stop AusNet’s Towers, Emma Muir, said the new name was misleading, and a new name wouldn’t change the “dangerous” nature of the project.

“This is a feeble attempt by AusNet to disassociate themselves from the negativity associated with the WVTNP. The WVTNP was designed to transport brown coal generated electricity, this is what justified the projects inception. It will transport green energy as well, but make no mistake, this transmission line is also designed to transport brown or dirty energy,” Ms Muir told the Moorabool News.

“Under any name this is an unacceptable, ill-conceived, and dangerous project, that will destroy the environment, not improve it. Why are AusNet not addressing the grave concerns being put forth by the community? They spend more time and money on wasteful marketing campaigns designed to coerce and deceive our community, rather that legitimately addressing the impacts.

“There is a better way to deliver the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project – one that delivers the same benefits, the same action on climate change, without destroying our environment and communities.”

The Stop AusNet’s Towers group are campaigning for the overhead transmission line project to be put underground.

Over $50,000 has been raised in the Moorabool community at a local Big Freeze event, with all proceeds going towards finding a cure for the terminal illness, Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

The Big Freeze in the Marsh raised over $36,000 from donations to sliders going into the icy water before the Bacchus Marsh v Sunbury Queen’s Birthday weekend match, with beanie sales adding up to more than $50,000.

Bacchus Marsh Football Netball Club (BMFNC) President Mark Farrell was one of the many brave sliders taking the plunge, dressing up in a goldfish suit.

He said it was fantastic to have a physical event again for the first time since 2019, and thanked everyone who donated, and the organisers who made the day possible.

“We had a big crowd, around 20 people went down the slide. When I got down into the water, my first reaction was it wasn’t as cold as I thought it’d be, then all of a sudden it hit me,” he laughed.

“We raised a bit more money than the last one in 2019, but it’s been really good…even in the years we couldn’t have the slide, we were able to raise $16,000 to $17,000.

“A big thank you has to go to the Bacchus Marsh Football Netball Club Committee, all the volunteers, and the organisers Anne Phyland and Ian McClure. And of course, all the people who attended and donated.”

The Big Freeze in the Marsh even made it on Channel Seven and Channel Nine.

Local face of the fight against MND Phil O’Keefe has had MND for seven-years, and told Nine News it was “a bastard of a disease”.

“It takes everything away from you, except your mind. This is my battle, but to see people come out is just extraordinary,” he said.

“It’s not just a Melbourne event, it’s a regional event too, and we just can’t thank everyone enough,” his wife Triss added.

Moorabool represented in Canberra Moorabool Shire Council’s advocacy priorities were taken to Canberra by the Peri Urban Councils Victoria group and their neighbouring Councils last week, for the Australian Local Government Association’s National General Assembly.

This year, the theme was ‘Partners in Progress’.

The yearly event allows Mayors and Councillors to engage directly with Ministers and MPs and advocate for their local communities.

However, this year no one from Council attended in person.

Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said their advocacy priorities were raised by Peri Urban Councils Victoria and our neighbouring Councils who share common interests.

“We’ve made the decision not to spend money to attend the event ourselves, but our community can be assured we advocated for them regardless,” Cr Sullivan said.

“We have a lot of similar issues to other peri urban councils and our neighbouring Councils that came up at the assembly.

Those issues included telecommunications, transport links and access to local services.”

Cr Sullivan said they also wanted the NGA to be aware of their strong advocating for AusNet to consider undergrounding the transmission lines through Moorabool Shire.

The official motion on the transmission lines from Council is: “This National General Assembly calls on the Australian Government to deliver better, more sustainable outcomes for the transition to renewable energy by introducing a policy

“As we gathered in Canberra, we wanted to send a powerful and united message of support to the Ukraine people, and their democratically elected governments.”

Councils from across Australia unanimously passed the following motion: "We the delegates of the 2022 National General Assembly of Local Government stand in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and its legitimate elected democratic governments in seeking peace, security and stability within the State of Ukraine.”

The National General Assembly ran from 19-22 June.

Council advocate on behalf of the community to secure funding from State and Federal Governments to deliver infrastructure, facilities and services. that all future high-voltage transmission projects will be required to investigate the lowest social, environmental, and economic impact technologies and design options available.”

ALGA President Linda Scott said the Ukraine Ambassador, His Excellency Vasyl Myroshnychenko addressed the assembly.

“The Ambassador was warmly received by almost 1,000 councillors and local government leaders.

“Councils around Australia – and the world – are committed to local democracy, and we have been horrified by the images we have seen and the reports we have read coming out of Ukraine,” she said.

Vandalism puts hikers at risk

By Lachlan Ellis Emergency services personnel are angry, and for good reason.

A local hiking trail emergency marker has fallen victim to graffiti, defacing the important identifying detail, that could potentially put lives at risk.

The Bacchus Marsh SES Unit posted a photo of the graffitied emergency marker in the Lerderderg State Park on their social media, with white ‘tags’ surrounding and somewhat obscuring the emergency marker number at the bottom.

Unit Controller Bill Robson explained the importance of being able to read the signs clearly during emergency situations.

“These markers are a lifeline for lost or injured people. We have had people quote them previously to direct us to people who are both lost or suffering serious injuries.

To think people are taking marker pens and paint into a State Park to graffiti signs is pretty sad,” Mr Robson told the Moorabool News.

“Surprisingly a lot of the signage has been graffitied in the past. Who knows why, it’s very disappointing.”

The emergency markers are located at strategic locations throughout the Lerderderg and Werribee Gorges, with this particular marker located around two kilometres in from the car park.

Each emergency marker contains a unique number, which can be read to emergency services to let them know where you are. They also contain directional information for lost people.

Parks Victoria will now have to clean up the signage to make it clearly legible again.

Signs to rate fire danger Changes are coming to the Fire Danger Rating (FDR) with a new message, but what do the signs mean.

The signs are placed on major highways and in rural township areas; the Fire Danger Ratings describe the potential level of danger should a bushfire start.

A spokesperson for the Greendale Rural Fire Brigade said in a post on social media they are important because they provide people with information. “… so that they can take action to protect themselves and others from the potentially dangerous impacts of bushfires.”

Ratings are calculated using a combination of weather forecasting and information about vegetation that could fuel a fire.

The new Fire Danger Ratings will now have four levels (instead of six) – Moderate, High, Extreme and Catastrophic.

In line with the changes to the FDR system, Australian fire services are planning to introduce a new fire danger rating sign this year. It aims to improve public safety and reduce the impacts of bushfire by improving: • information • communication • decision-making tools The fire danger rating system will also be a nationally consistent model, giving consistency across the country (which is great for those travelling across borders).

For the CFA, a state-based media campaign will commence early August focused on describing the new Australian Fire Danger Rating System and why the community will see signs being replaced.

Crime stats see seven-year low The latest Victorian crime figures have been released for the 12-months to the end of March 2022, with a year-on-year decrease of more than 10 per cent.

The Crime Statistics Agency officially released the figures on Thursday 16 June, revealing that 470,405 criminal offences were recorded in that 12-month period – a decrease of 11.5 per cent.

The figure represents the lowest number of criminal offences committed in the year ending March since 2015.

Moorabool has seen an even sharper decline in offences recorded, from 2,634 for the 12-months to the end of March 2021, to 2,038 for the 12-months to the end of March 2022 – a decrease of 22.6 per cent.

Four of the top five Moorabool suburbs for crime – Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Ballan, and Gordon – all saw decreases in offences recorded, while Maddingley saw a slight increase, from 266 last year to 275 this year.

Victoria Police said they were also pleased to see the lowest number of victims across the state since the introduction of the Law Enforcement Assistance Program in 1993, with 4,182 less victims of crime than the previous year, and 41,061 less victims than the year ending March 2020 for a pre-pandemic comparison.

“It’s incredibly pleasing to see crime continue to reduce not only year-on-year, but from the levels we saw pre pandemic as well,” Deputy Commissioner Regional Operations, Rick Nugent, said.

“Importantly, we are seeing a reduction in the number of victims in our community and the number of people offending, particularly in relation to youth – this shows

our collaboration with external partners to implement early intervention initiatives is making an impact and diverting young people away from crime.”

The number of youth offenders is down nearly 10 per cent from five years ago, and decreased eight per cent for the year ending March 2022, compared to the year before.

Residential burglaries are at the lowest levels for a year ending in March since the introduction of the Law Enforcement Assistance Program in 1993, while thefts are at their lowest levels since 2013, and robberies at their lowest levels in the last decade.

Drug related offending also experienced a significant reduction, with drug dealing/trafficking dropping by around 1,700 offences and drug use and possession reducing by around 8,000 offences.

“Whether it’s the local police officers patrolling your neighbourhood, the AirWing’s eyes from up above, the PSOs patrolling your local train station, specialist investigators listening to the stories of victims and supporting them, or the detectives knocking on the doors of known serious and violent criminals – be assured Victoria Police is doing everything we can to keep you safe,” Deputy Commissioner Nugent said.

By Lachlan Ellis The SES have repeated calls for hikers to be prepared and make sure they’re aware of the terrain they’re hiking in, after making their fifth rescue in the Lerderderg Gorge this year.

Volunteers from the Bacchus Marsh SES Unit were called out to the Lerderderg Gorge at around 6 pm on Sunday 19 June, to locate two missing hikers.

Unit Controller Bill Robson said it was important for hikers to be aware of hiking conditions, particularly in winter when it gets dark earlier.

“The two hikers did not allow themselves enough time before dark, and did not know where they were going.

Although they had water, they were not familiar with the area and were not prepared for darkness,” Mr Robson told the Moorabool News.

“The pair were located on Link Track 2. This is a very steep, rocky, washed-out track. It is not for the faint-hearted. Many people don’t realise the Lerderderg Gorge is a very rugged area of bush, it’s not a walk in a suburban park.”

Fortunately, the missing pair were found uninjured, around an hour after SES rescue crews arrived, and were safely escorted back to the car park area.

The dedicated volunteers at the Bacchus Marsh SES Unit have been called out to assist an injured or missing person at the Lerderderg and Werribee Gorges almost every weekend in recent months.

And the message is, to help lighten their workload and ensure you don’t get lost while hiking, make sure you’re prepared. Use a map, leave plenty of time, and don’t rely on your mobile device, as many longer walks don’t have phone reception.

Appointment of new Managing Director Central Highlands Water (CHW) has announced the appointment of new Managing Director, Jeff Haydon, who will commence in the role from Monday 11 July 2022.

Mr Haydon has been a member of the local community over the past 15 years and is presently CHW’s General Manager, Infrastructure Planning & Operations.

Prior to moving to Ballarat with his family, Mr Haydon, a qualified civil engineer who also holds a Master of Business Administration, worked for an international engineering consulting firm, as well as a Melbourne retail water business.

While he was there, he announced $2.1 million in funding from the Regional Tourism Investment Fund for stage 3 of the project, which will include: • An all-abili�es trail at the summit, designed to capture 360 degree views across Moorabool and back towards Melbourne.

• Six thema�cally designed sculptures, which will be located along the trail and provide a link to the sculpture trail at the base of the 1000+ Steps at Telford Park.

• A car park constructed off Swans Road.

Summit ameni�es will include a trail, shelter, tables, sea�ng, wayfinding, interpre�ve signage and accessible toilets.

Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said connec�on to the 1000+ Steps will give visitors the opportunity to start their journey at either Telford Park or the summit where they will be rewarded with impressive views.

“This is a fantas�c project for our region, one that will substan�ally increase tourism in this area, and we thank the State Government for recognising and inves�ng in that,” Cr Sullivan said.

The total project cost for stage 3 is $2.8 million, with Council funding around $700,000.

New Providers Announced for Moorabool’s Aged Care Services new providers to service delivery in Moorabool community.

Silver Chain Victoria has been appointed by the Commonwealth Government to provide aged care services to residents over 65 years of age and Mecwacare has been appointed by the State Government to provide care for Council’s clients aged under 65 living with a disability. Silver Chain will take on approximately 700 clients, while Mecwacare will transi�on approximately 40 clients.

Council is working closely with Silver Chain and Mecwacare to ensure the transi�on is as smooth as possible for all clients.

Queen Elida will be sent for a break and set for some of the big features at the back end of the year after another classy display at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night.

Brent Lilley’s emerging megastar cruised to an 8.3m victory in the Group 2 IRT Australia Matriarch Trot and the Bolinda trainer told thetrots.com.au that the mare would now be given a short spell.

Driver Chris Alford was asked by TrotsVision host Rob Auber if the four-yearold was the most exciting trotter he’d ever driven, but the champion reinsman stopped short of declaring her that just yet.

“Ever is hard to say. I’ve driven some good ones over my time, but if she keeps going, she’s going to be good enough to win an Inter Dominion I think. Just driving her quiet with her electric speed,” Alford said.

“In 12 months, we might be saying that she’s the best one around.”

While Queen Elida won well to register her

14th victory at start 24, Alford felt she was below her best.

“She was a bit snaky tonight in the pre-race warm-up and even before the race,” Alford said.

“When she got sort of 6m in front, I could just feel her ease up and just wait.

“So she probably wasn’t 100 per cent, but still got the job done really easily.”

Queen Elida’s four runs this preparation included a second placing to Mufasa Metro in the Group 3 Vulcan Trotters Free For All and wins in the Group 1 La Coocaracha, Group 3 Carlotta’s Pride Trotters Free For All and the Group 2 IRT Australia Matriarch Trot.

Cobras knocking on finals door

By Todd Whelan Bacchus Marsh v Sebastopol The travelling Cobras kept finals aspirant Sebastopol to just six goals on their way to a morale boosting 22-point win last Saturday. The Cobras led at every change, joining three other teams on five wins to keep their top six chances alive. Once again Cobras Captain Jake Owen played ‘the general’ role down back in the absence of key defenders Jack Williams and Jason Robinson. In-form Cobras duo Ryley Stuhldrier and newcomer Sam Crea made it back-to-back solid performances to feature among the better players while small forward Tyler Huyn (three goals) pinched his second haul of multiple goals this year.

Devils demolish Lakers

Darley v Lake Wendouree The Devils recorded their first, four quarter win of the season with a comprehensive 106 point demolition job over the Lakers on Darley Park at the weekend. It was the rebuilding Devils fifth win of the season under new coach Dan Jordan, moving them into fourth place on the BFNL table, ahead of next opponent North Ballarat, Sebastopol and cross town rival Bacchus Marsh on percentage.

The reserves notched their 3rd win of the season 81 to 52. The return of former senior premiership player, Tom Evans and junior star, Liam Cahill, was a great boost for the team. Best players were Tom Evans, Brandon Williams, Jett Fuller and Tim Hardinge.
