‘Wheelie’ big win

By Lachlan Ellis A local cyclist has become part of a gold medal team at an international competition, adding another medal to his trophy cabinet.

The former student at Bacchus Marsh Grammar, 21-year-old Graeme Frislie, was part of the four-man Australian Men’s Elite Team Pursuit team at the UCI Track Nations Cup in Milton, Canada, on Thursday 12 May. Alongside teammates Joshua Duffy, Conor Leahy and James Moriarty, Mr Frislie took top spot on the podium, beating Italy in second place, and Germany in third.

It was the first time Mr Frislie had raced in the green and gold overseas at the elite level.

Proud mum Shelley said the win was the result of more than a year of training by Graeme and the team.

“We’re very proud. I’m a teacher at Bacchus Marsh Grammar, I had my class stop and we all watched Graeme’s race. We all cheered when his team won, it was great. Graeme and his team worked towards the team pursuit training for the past 15 months,” she told the Moorabool News.

“He started in Under 13s with the Ballarat Sebastopol Cycling, and then moved to the Brunswick Cycling Club for Under 15s. He was also National Champion in the Team Pursuit this year in the elimination race and the omnium, and also won an Oceania Championship in the Team Pursuit.”

With this new accolade under his belt, Ms Frislie hopes her son will move on to even bigger events.

“This is a building block, hopefully, for something bigger…Graeme and his team are hoping their success at the Nations Cup will secure them a spot for the Commonwealth Games, but the selections won’t happen for another week or so,” she said.

Community unbottles their concerns

The planning permit is on public exhibition for comment; the amended use was referred to Central Highlands Water (CHW) and other agencies.

CHW has responded with no objection, with conditions that the site be connected to reticulated sewerage. Once the advertising period has completed and all referrals have been received, Council officers will complete its formal assessment and prepare a report for decision-making at a full Council meeting.

By Lachlan Ellis A planning permit application is being opposed by local residents, and is set to come before Council, despite a commitment from the applicant to put sewer pipes through the town for the first time.

Residents of Dunnstown are understood to have sent dozens of individual objections to Moorabool Shire Council, opposing plans submitted by local spring water bottlers Cottonwood Springs.

Managing Director at Cottonwood Springs, George Tan, said the application was almost identical to one lodged in 2013, with an amendment to allow the plant to produce plantbased milk.

The application includes plans to construct a second building intended for warehousing and storage, while a sewer extension is also in the works to deal with wastewater.

It is virtually identical to an application lodged in 2013, but includes an amendment to allow the plant to produce plantbased milk such as oat and almond milk.

Claims by Cottonwood Springs about ongoing sewer extensions allowing the community to connect, and open engagement by Cottonwood are contested by some Dunnstown residents, who have formed the Dunnstown Community Sub-Committee Cottonwood.

A representative from the Sub-Committee said the sewer pipeline wouldn’t be accessible to Dunnstown residents, and attempts to get in touch with Cottonwood Springs had failed.

“The town feels it’s impacting us in terms of trucks, noise, all sorts of things. There was also a recent article in the Ballarat Courier where it said Cottonwood’s plans would provide sewerage to Dunnstown…well, the pipe is of a size that will only provide waste disposal for Cottonwood, it’s not of a size that’s going to allow for anything else,” the Sub-Committee representative said.

“Slades [Cottonwood Springs’ parent company] have got their industrial factory in Thomastown, which is perfectly located for this, rather than bringing it onto agricultural land in Dunnstown, where the townspeople are not able to build housing, on a prime water catchment.

“We’ve sent emails to Cottonwood from the Sub-Committee which were not responded to…I don’t want to get into a slanging match with them, but I don’t think they’ve shown themselves to be wanting to communicate with the community. There hasn’t been a great spirit of cooperation,” she said.

An email from Central Highlands Water to the committee, was forwarded to the Moorabool News, which stated “the design criteria for the sewer extension is for the capacity of the Cottonwood facility only, and that there are no plans to provide further sewer extensions to the Dunnstown township”.

Last year, Cottonwood Springs was fined $8,261 after “organic sludge” leaked from a malfunctioning wastewater treatment unit onto open land.

The plant was inspected by the EPA three times in the space of a month to ensure compliance, with the third inspection finding that Cottonwood Springs had “removed the sludge material but had not complied with the instruction to cease discharging wastewater, having instead made on-site modifications to the water flows”, EPA South West Regional Manager Carolyn Francis told the Moorabool News in September 2021.

Cottonwood Springs is located on Old Melbourne Road Dunnstown, a busy thoroughfare for B-Double quarry trucks to the Western Freeway. **CHW were contacted for comment however, our questions had been sent to DELWP and then the Minister, with a reply not forthcoming before the print deadline.

Cottonwood has their say Managing Director at Cottonwood Springs, George Tan, was asked his thoughts on what the Sub-Committee representative had said.

He argued that it was the Sub-Committee who had not come to the table to discuss Cottonwood’s plans, and Cottonwood was working hard to help the community.

“We have not received any emails or communication to get in touch. We have had Mr Murphy calling me from the Sub-Committee asking if it’s okay to expand/enlarge the sewer pipe for the Dunnstown area, and my answer is yes, and we are happy to work on that. The current sewer pipeline has capacity for residents, they need to reach out to CHW for their needs. We simply can’t provide an estimate for each individual needs,” Mr Tan told the Moorabool News.

“We have been with the Dunnstown community for 20 years and have been cooperating in every way to Council and the community. We have proven again and again that we are listening and commit to be a good abiding business.

“We have been donating drinks and beverages to the local clubs/events and been sponsors of many community groups in Ballarat (outside of Dunnstown). We continue to support Foodbank in so many ways in providing oat milk, water, and other beverages all the time,” he said.

Mr Tan also addressed last year’s wastewater leakage at Cottonwood Springs, stating that the issue had been resolved.

“The wastewater discharged has stopped completely after the second notice, and all discharge is taken offsite for treatment. There is no longer any wastewater discharge since the notice. All compliance from EPA has been met, and we have no

Ensuring youth know the history

By Lachlan Ellis A Gordon author’s first book has just been released, painting a picture for young readers of what it was like living in a German youth camp during the Second World War. Borrowing from her father’s own experiences living in Germany during World War II, Deb Goldie’s ‘Test of Wills’ tells the story of 11-year-old Will, who falls into a coma after contracting a virus, and finds himself in a German youth camp.

While the story itself is fictional, it is rooted in historical fact, and Ms Goldie’s father’s stories of the youth camp Tirschenreuth.

Ms Goldie said she aimed to tell an exciting story of adventure, to both encourage young people to read, and help ensure that dark period of history is never forgotten.

“I used to work in a primary school as an integration aide, and I did a lot of literacy work with boys especially. For boys, most would rather be out kicking a football than sitting there reading…so the books we’d find for them would have to really excite them. So that’s what started me on my quest,” she told the Moorabool News.

“What people experience during the war, or at any time, should never be forgotten. I wanted to use what Dad had told me in a fictional story, so that we could pass it on to our children, so these important events in time are never forgotten.”

Ms Goldie’s father – also named Will, coincidently – was 10 years old when World War II began, and it was his stories, and the reaction of Ms Goldie’s daughter Annie to hearing them, that inspired Ms Goldie to put pen to paper.

“Dad never spoke about the war, he had such bad memories of Germany … but over a bottle of red one night, he started to tell us about all of his adventures and what happened to him,” she told the Moorabool News.

“My daughter Annie looked at me afterwards and said ‘Mum, why do I need to do school history when I can listen to Pop?’ That really made such an impression, it’s something I’ll never forget… some of the things he was telling us were amazing. Then it became my mission, I armed myself with a tape recorder and recorded more of his stories.”

Ms Goldie started writing Test of Wills back in 2012, and even visited Tirschenreuth in Germany to get an idea of the environment, and

“localise myself with the place and talk to people there”.

Aimed at Year 5 to 7 students, the book contains short chapters with hooks at the end of each one, to keep young readers engaged and eager to turn the next page.

Eagles “not considered at risk”

By Lachlan Ellis A local nature photographer is worried local animals could be accidentally poisoned by bait being used in Rowsley, but Parks Victoria says there is no cause for concern.

David Whelan specialises in photos of local landscapes and wildlife, the latter of which he feels is at risk of secondary poisoning.

In other words, Mr Whelan is concerned that foxes, the intended target of the baiting program, could be poisoned and then eaten by other animals, including the local wedgetailed eagle population.

“I’m aware of at least three pairs of wedge-tailed eagles

along Reids Road where it goes all the way up to Mt Wallace, there might even be more. One of the concerns is that because we’re going into the winter months, and the eagles’ prey is scarcer, they’re probably more likely to feed on carrion,” he told the Moorabool News.

“Depending on how the baits are set – and I’m not familiar with them and how they’re set – if there is a fox carcass, there’s a reasonably good chance that during the colder months eagles will feed on it. And if they do feed on it, there’s a chance they could get secondary poisoning.”

Mr Whelan’s concerns were put through to Parks Victoria, with a spokesperson stating the poison being used would not put animals at risk of secondary poisoning.

“We do have a baiting program underway targeting foxes in the Brisbane Ranges National Park, as is usual practice.

The bait we are using is PAPP (Para-aminopropiophenone) via Canid Pest Ejectors. This was determined to be the most targeted bait for foxes. The Canid Pest Ejectors require upward bite force to deploy which targets canid species. This also prevents the fox from burying/caching the bait outside of the park, a scenario which could lead to unintended targets,” the spokesperson said.

“The poison PAPP is toxic to canid species (foxes and dogs) but there is an antidote that can be administered by a vet.

In regards to secondary poisoning, PAPP degrades relatively quickly in the environment and is not considered a risk to animals eating poisoned animals.”

Friendship, fellowship and fun

By Carol Saffer When Noreen and Peter Tonks moved to Bacchus Marsh nine years ago to support their family with young children, they knew no-one else in the township.

“I said to Pete, we need to join something and meet people,” Mrs Tonks told the Moorabool News.

They joined the Probus Club of Bacchus Marsh and found like-minded people.

“We enjoy the fellowship, the socialisation and the activities; they suit us,” Mrs Tonks said.

She is now the President of the club that has both women and men members.

Membership of Probus, an abbreviation of PROfessional and BUSiness, is open to retired or semi-retired people with the opportunity to connect socially and undertake a range of activities including trips and outings and monthly meetings.

Probus clubs do not do any fund raising or charity work.

Probus Club of Bacchus Marsh was founded more than 30 years ago as a men’s only group.

Fifteen years ago, women were invited to join and now make up the majority of the members.

The fourth Monday of each month the group meets at the Lord Street Bowling Club rooms behind the Library in Main Street, Bacchus Marsh for conviviality and to listen to interesting guest speakers followed by a lunch at one of the local venues.

Every Tuesday morning at 8am, members also gather to walk the Moon Reserve before going to the Big Apple for breakfast at 8.30am. Plus, once a month members meet at the Village for a coffee morning and a chat which is a great event to get to know other members.

Weather permitting some members meet at Maddingley Park each Thursday at 11am where each take their own refreshments.

Club member Margaret Murray, said these events are an opportunity to meet men and women on the same wave length and engage in conversation and enjoy their company and even go on a trip or two.

“Perhaps you have retired from employment and wondering how you can spend some of your time, or you are feeling a little isolated, or your grandchildren don’t take up so much of your time these days,” Ms Murray said.

The Probus Club of Bacchus Marsh’s next meeting is on Monday, June 27 at the Bowling Club rooms in Lord Street, Bacchus Marsh.

Already this year the club have completed a fantastic five-night six-day tour of the Yarrawonga region. Twenty-six members and friends voted it as one of the best tours they had been on.

The Club is already planning next years away event. They have recently visited gardens in Mt Macedon where 28 members attended.

Champion nets 300 games

By Lachlan Ellis A legend of the Springbank Football Netball Club has notched up 300 games – the first senior Springbank netballer to do so, adding another accolade to a career full of premierships and awards.

Leane Mahar played her 300th game of netball for Springbank on Saturday 4 June at the Wallace Recreation Reserve, the milestone made even sweeter with a 33–24 win over Learmonth.

Ms Mahar was given flowers, and walked through a guard of honour formed by fellow players and supporters as she took to the court.

She said it was a love of the club, premiership success, and a love of netball that had kept her going for so long.

“Friendships and premierships have kept me playing for so long…I’ve won seven premierships at Springbank, and played in a few losing ones too. It’s a fantastic club, it’s very family-orientated,” Ms Mahar told the Moorabool News.

“I’m passionate about the club, and the friendships I’ve made along the way are irreplaceable. At one point in time, all the girls in the netball club I’ve either coached or played in the same team, whether it be A, B, or C Grade this year.”

Ms Mahar admitted her 300th game was “a little bit emotional”, with the “overwhelming support from everybody”, including some people travelling three and a half hours to see her.

As for the greatest moment of her netball career, she said it was a tie between the 2008 Grand Final, and playing netball with her daughter.

“I was coaching in 2008, basically our

- Leane Mahar whole A Grade team had left. We’d won the premiership the last two years prior to that… but players get poached. Josie Donegan and I were the only two players in A Grade left from that premiership side,” Ms Mahar said.

“Everyone said we were going to finish on the bottom of the ladder … we did lose a few games, but we made finals on percentage and went up against an undefeated Dunnstown and beat them in double extra time in the Grand Final. Josie had a shot after the first extra time and sunk it to keep us in the game, then in the second extra time we won by two goals.

“I’ve won premierships since then, but nothing ever beats 2008. And obviously playing with 14-year old Maddy, playing together on the court this weekend was amazing. Hopefully we can qualify her, and she can keep playing this season, she plays in the Under 15s.”

President of the Springbank Football Netball Club, Jason Carey, said Ms Mahar was not only successful on the court, but a great club person off it.

“She’s done it all, Central Highlands Team of the Year, Best and Fairest, captain-coach of a premiership team in 2015, I don’t know where you start and stop, she’s just the complete package,” he said.

We took on a young senior coach in the netball and she’s been a great mentor to him. Just the time and commitment, ongoing roles she picks up … this is my first year as President, I’ve certainly bounced heaps off her. She’s the ultimate club person.”

As for aiming for 350 or even 400 games, Ms Mahar said she “wasn’t even sure I’ll retire at the end of the year”, but “would like to get to 350”.

L2P back on the road

By Lachlan Ellis A learner’s program can continue helping young people learn to drive, with the keys to a new car handed over last week thanks to an article in the Moorabool News and, support and funding, from local businesses and Moorabool Council.

The Melton/Moorabool L2P team, part of Djerriwarrh Community & Education Services, gratefully accepted a new Kia Stonic on Monday 6 June, thanks to sponsorship from the Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal (FRRR), the Bacchus Marsh Community Bank Branch, and Moorabool Shire Council.

The new car will have the Program running locally again for the first time in months, as the previous vehicle in use for lessons was vandalised.

Acting L2P Project Officer Debra Milvain said it couldn’t be overstated how important the new car was for the L2P Program.

“The new car means everything to the Program, as we had Mentors and Learners, but without a vehicle, we just don’t have a Program. We haven’t had any activity since March,” Ms Milvain told the Moorabool News.

“The handover was held at the Bacchus Marsh Police Station, courtesy of Jen Horgan, Station Commander. Senior Constable Jim Ross, who has been an unflinching advocate of our program right from the outset, hosted the handover event for us.

The purchasing of a replacement car for the Melton/Moorabool L2P Program was kickstarted by a $10,000 grant from FRRR, which was complemented by a $7,000 contribution from Council.

“We were trying to figure out how to procure a second-hand vehicle that met the TAC’s criteria that the car must be less than 10 years old to meet safety standards, when the Bacchus Marsh Community Bank Branch came to the rescue, big time,” Ms Milvain said.

News and approached us with an offer of a further $10,000. This meant we could get a brand-new vehicle which will service L2P in the Moorabool community for the next 10 years. It also means the new vehicle is totally funded by the Moorabool community.”

Also, on the long list of generous locals doing their bit to get a new car sorted for the L2P Program was Joylene Richards from Harrison Group, who assisted in quickly finding the car, Joanne Santos from Grainger Legal, who offered a designated space in their car park, and the Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh, long-term supporters of the Program who provide it with fuel, car servicing, and tyres.

“All of these individuals and organisations should be proud of their contribution to the L2P Program singularly. We presented Certificates of Appreciation on the day, but it doesn’t seem enough for what they do for us,” Ms Milvain said.

“Without each of them coming together as a whole, we simply wouldn’t exist or be able to help our youth overcome some of the obstacles placed before them.”

The L2P Program is the largest youth mentoring program in Victoria, with over half of participants from rural areas. Since 2009, the Melton/Moorabool branch has assisted 190 young people to gain their licences.

Seek out free music festival

By Lachlan Ellis More than 60 artists across 20 venues in Moorabool will perform over four upcoming Saturdays in a new winter music festival – and attendance is completely free.

The Hide + Seek Music Festival, presented by Live and Local and Moorabool Shire Council, will see performances held at venues in Blackwood, Gordon, Bacchus Marsh, and Ballan, on 25 June, 2 July, 9 July, and 16 July respectively.

From Blackwood’s ‘old time mountain’ artists Cat and Clint, to folk rock artist Lachie Murphy and jazz trio Continental Drift, the Festival will offer something for everyone, no matter what your taste in music.

And if you want to join in on the musical fun and not just watch performances, you can sing along to Crowded House classics at the Blackwood Hotel from 7 – 9 pm on 25 June with ‘Sing Pub Sing’, or perhaps join the ‘Shape Note’ Singing Workshop at St Martin’s Chapel from 1 – 1.30 pm.

Moorabool Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said the event would provide a rare opportunity for people to discover new music.

“This festival will create a fantastic opportunity to locals and tourists to see and hear the uniqueness the region has to offer – and all for free,” Cr Sullivan said.

“Wander through old gold mining towns and listen to some bluegrass, indie folk, rockabilly, blues and pop music inside venues ranging from an antique store to a bowling club to a caravan to a church to a hat shop.”

Smoke alarm - new bedroom essential

By Carol Saffer A young Melbourne couple escaped with their lives thanks to a fire alarm on their upper floor when their inner-city house was destroyed by fire.

The male resident woke to the faint sound of an upstairs smoke alarm and rushed to wake his wife before quickly evacuating and calling triple zero (000).

The fire completely gutted their home, but the couple and their pets safely evacuated thanks to their working smoke alarms.

Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and Country Fire Authority (CFA) recently launched the 2022 Smoke Alarm Campaign that encourages Victorians to install additional smoke alarms in their bedrooms.

Data reveals that more than 70 per cent of fatal house fires start in bedrooms and sleeping areas.

Bacchus Marsh CFA Brigade Captain Nick De Leur said it is very important that local residents should take the time to install extra alarms in bedrooms and check that all the smoke alarms in their house are working.

“Often we go into someone’s house and see a smoke alarm hanging down without a battery because it goes off every time they use the toaster,” Mr De Leur said.

“It is also important that everyone in the household

especially children know what to do when the alarm goes off,” he said.

“There is plenty of information for residents on the CFA website on how to have a fire plan in place.”

The fire agencies are encouraging Victorians to consider additional smoke alarms in bedrooms, living areas and hallways rather than usually in the kitchen.

“People lose their sense of smell when they are sleeping, and the carbon monoxide in smoke will put you into a deeper sleep,” said Garry Cook, CFA Acting Chief Officer.

“Without a working smoke alarm in bedrooms and living areas, you may not wake up,” he said.

“Regardless of what type of smoke alarm is installed, all units should be tested every month and replaced every ten years.”

Fire Rescue Victoria Deputy Commissioner Michelle Young said people are far more likely to die or be seriously injured if a fire starts in the bedroom or living area when they are asleep.

“Within just 60 seconds, a fire can quickly take hold, giving off toxic smoke and spreading rapidly,” Deputy Commissioner Young said.

Sixty-seven per cent of all fatal house fires occur at night between 9.00pm and 6.00am.

Research and testing by Fire and Rescue NSW demonstrate that when a fire starts in a bedroom with the door closed, the hallway smoke alarms do not activate.

To ensure alarms are working correctly, the fire agencies recommend using smoke alarms powered by a 10-year lithium battery eliminating the need to change batteries every year.

They should also be cleaned at least once a year with a duster or vacuum cleaner to remove particles that will affect the alarm’s performance.

A new master plan for publicly accessible mineral springs is being prepared by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP), which wants to hear from the community.

In particular, DELWP wants to hear what the community values most about Victoria’s mineral springs, which springs are your favourite and why, how you know where they are located, and how you consume, collect, and store mineral water.

There are 39 mineral springs open to the public in Victoria, including at Ballan Mineral Springs Reserve, Blackwood Mineral Springs & Tourist Camp Reserve, and Spargo Creek Mineral Springs Reserve.

Feedback will inform the new 10-year master plan, ensuring mineral springs are managed in a way that benefits regional tourism, and supports Traditional Owner aspirations for self-determination.

The mineral springs are located on Dja Dja Wurrung, Wadawurrung, and Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Country, with the majority concentrated within the Central Highlands region around the Daylesford/Hepburn areas.

DELWP encourages the community to fill out the Community Survey before 10 July, at www. engage.vic.gov.au/mineral-springs-masterplan.

The master plan 2023-2032 is expected to be completed by December this year.

Dear Editor, As recently observed in federal politics, when the general populace disapproves of systems, policies and behaviours, a change in power is instigated.

The same fate must be afforded to the inept policies, planning and processes undertaken throughout the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project.

The AEMO, AusNet, Mondo, the Victorian Energy & Environment Minister (MP Lily D’Ambrosio), and the ESV have all failed in their duties, care and responsibilities to the communities for the entire length and breadth of this proposed project.

The initial inept planning undertaken by AEMO and the scant regard of landowners and communities as Stakeholders in this project was erroneous from the outset.

The ill-conceived greenfields development route selection detracted many potential proponents from tendering for this project, as ‘Green Field’ destruction and Social Licence was seen as problematic from the outset.

Leaving AusNet, with their cosy relationship with the Andrew’s Government, to obtain the full monopoly of the Victorian Energy Transmission Network.

As the wheels are now in motion and no back tracking appears to be considered by the State Government, the community has been relentlessly told to focus on the required EES (Environmental Effects Statement) to have any influence on this ill-conceived project.

If being cynical from the outset of a fair EES process, the recent Ombudsman’s Report of the EPA’s handling of the West Gates Toxic

Waste, and its subsequent State Government and Corporate interference, only heightens my cynicism of a FAIR process.

The WVNTP is already broken and requires immediate recycling from the rubbish it is, to a community acceptable alternative.

Nathan Lidgett Myrniong Dear Editor, The recent report on the EPA (M/News 7 June) and the possible political interference in its decision-making process should set alarm bells ringing and the dead silence on the report from our state MP is completely unacceptable.

I believe that toxic dumping will continue after the election of the state government in November and the outer western suburbs will continue to be treated with contempt.

Our newly elected federal MP has also been very quiet on the misleading information provided by Ausnet as has our local state MP. It is a sad reflection on our political system when politicians have to be dragged kicking and screaming to do what is right for the people, classic example is the Melton hospital that should have been built 20-years ago and that is just the tip of a very large iceberg of a lack of action over many years.

One would hope that the new federal government will provide for the people, or is this wishful thinking?

Logo refresh gets go ahead

By Lachlan Ellis A new logo that is more accessible for the visually impaired, with the logo to be gradually adopted over the coming years, has been given the go ahead.

The ‘Brand Strategy Project Update – Corporate Logo Refresh’ came before Moorabool Shire Council at the 1 June Ordinary Meeting, with a new logo recommended by Council’s communications team after 12 months of stakeholder engagement.

While the new logo is quite similar to Council’s current logo, the report stated this could be advantageous as it is “highly recognisable as part of the Shire brand”.

Compared to the current logo, it uses exclusively black text to make it more readable, with less spacing, use of sentence case, and left-aligned text also improving readability.

The new logo was approved unanimously and will be “progressively rolled out as updates are needed” according to a Council spokesperson.

Participants will leave with a simple 2022 Business Roadmap focusing on Vision, Growth, People and Capability which will allow them to begin a process to business success. Be prepared to be challenged on your current thinking and open to insights that will offer an introduction to current trends and allow you to prepare actionable plans to implement going forward.

Recycle your unwanted paint

By Carol Saffer Paintback® is an Australian paint industry initiative founded in 2016 by Dulux, Haymes, PPG, Resene and Wattyl, designed to divert unwanted paint and packaging from landfills and vital waterways.

Since its establishment, Australians have returned over 36 million kilograms of unwanted paint and packaging to the national paint recovery scheme.

The recycle scheme accepts unwanted paint (water and oil-based) and packaging at over 165 permanent Australian collection sites.

Justin Horne, City of Melton’s Manager Environment and Waste, said at the Melton Recycling Facility, Paintback is well utilised mainly by the local community and some from the Moorabool area.

“Based on transactions details during the current financial year we had 315 transactions,” Mr Horne said.

“While the previous financial year we had 460 transactions.”

This amounts to approximately 57 tonnes per annum returned and recycled.

The Paintback program ensures unwanted paint, and the container is disposed of safely or repurposed for other industrial uses.

When the packaging and liquid are separated, the containers are recycled, subject to contamination.

The solvent paint can then be converted into an alternative fuel source replacing coal.

Separating water from acrylic paint results in a by-product used in various industrial applications.

The reclaimed water is used by other industries, which reduces the reliance on mains water.

The scheme funds Australian research into how it can improve the recovery of paint and paint tins to reduce demand for virgin resources.

Paintback CEO Karen Gomez said they aim to have 90 per cent of unwanted paint diverted into Australia’s developing circular economy.

“The best thing is to make sure you buy the right amount of paint for your project,” Ms Gomez said.

“But if you can’t, repurpose your paint by dropping it off free of charge at a Paintback site.”

Research shows that while one in three Australians have paint stored away, more than half didn’t know there were organisations to help them dispose of unwanted paint.

A significant concern is Australians buy more than 100 million litres of paint each year.

Around five per cent of it ends up as waste, making paint and its packaging one of the most substantial sources of liquid waste in landfills.

The Paintback programme, an independent not-for-profit organisation, is funded through a per litre levy applied to eligible products of between 1 litre and 20 litres inclusive.

New symbol is flushable

By Carol Saffer A fatberg forms when wet wipes flushed down the toilet combine with congealed fats, oils and grease poured down the kitchen sink resulting in a solid mass in household plumbing and sewers.

To alleviate this massive problem Standards Australia recently released DR AS/NZS 5328 Flushable Products, a world-first flushable standard label.

Simply put, consumers can now check what they want to put into their toilet has the flushable symbol. If it doesn’t don’t flush it.

The new standard outlines the criteria for materials suitable for flushing down the toilet in Australia and New Zealand, and provides requirements to manufacturers for correct and informative labelling.

Greater Western Water (GWW) managing director, Maree Lang, said the organisation welcomed the standard and it was an important milestone to protect the environment from sewer spills.

“The standard provides guidance to manufacturers and customers to ensure they can keep the sewer system healthy,” Ms Lang said.

“The flushable standard is a win for the industry and for the environment.”

The new standard, a long time coming, is designed to protect the sewer system from blockages caused by products that can’t break down properly in the network.

To assist manufacturers with determining whether their products are flushable, the standard provides a clear set of criteria including six ’flushability’ tests to carry out on products to ensure they are safe for the sewer system.

Paul O’Donohue, managing director, Central Highlands Water said the release of the Flushable Products Standard is a significant milestone for the water industry, manufacturers, peak bodies and Central Highlands Water customers.

“The correct disposal of non-flushable will positively impact our community, and the environment, through helping avoid major blockages,” he said.

“It is important for our customers to only ever flush the three Ps (pee, poo and toilet paper) to help us maintain an effective sewerage system.”

Adam Lovell, executive director, Water Services Association of Australia, said that message from the water industry to only flush the 3Ps poo, pee and (toilet) paper down the toilet doesn’t change.

“But now we can add, check for the flushable symbol,” he said.

“If there is no flushable symbol on the packet then don’t flush it, put it in the bin.”

The roll out of the flushable symbol on packaging is expected to begin within the next few months.

One Year On - Catch-Up and Book Launch

By Carol Saffer Two community catch-ups to acknowledge one year since a significant storm event occurred on Wednesday, June 9, 2021 will be hosted by Moorabool Shire Council’s Storm Recovery Team.

Council CEO Derek Madden said, “With over 1,000 properties impacted across the Shire and thousands of trees down in the forest and on private land, we’re holding these get-togethers to acknowledge this event’s impact on our community and everything done to recover since.”

This event compounded the loss of power, communications, landlines and mobiles, and network coverage.

More than 1000 homes were without power after the first 24 hours, and more than half the Shire did not have landlines, mobiles or network coverage.

Council said it responded, working closely with emergency service agencies in the initial hours and days of the storm.

The council deployed staff and contractors to remove tree debris from roads to re-establish access.

While emergency efforts were also looking at the communities affected, the trauma experienced, and the relief and recovery needed.

Korweinguboora resident Matt Childs describes the experience of the storm “as though my family and I were going to die with trees coming down all around us.”

“It was like multiple mini earthquakes with vibrations shaking the house; it was an extremely traumatic event,” he said.

One Year On events will be held at

the Blackwood Recreation Reserve on Sunday, June 19, from 11.00am to 3.00pm and the following Sunday, June 26, at the Korweinguboora Recreation Reserve at the same times.

They are a chance for the storm impacted community to catch up with emergency service responders and recovery agencies one year after the disaster.

Lunch is provided, and there are planned activities for kids.

Mr Childs has mixed feelings about the proposed One Year On event.

“On one hand, it would be good to catch up with the locals and bring them together, but on the other, it sounds like a bit of a celebration event with fairy floss and a book launch,” he said.

“It also feels like the council thinks the clean-up phase is complete, and they can move on. I estimate it will take another five years or more to clean up our block.”

Mr Childs said the Storm Recovery Team provided fencing posts for his land.

“However, DELWP are refusing to make safe compromised trees on their land which are threatening to fall over our fence line, so it seems pointless and dangerous to repair our fence,” he said.

“Council and DELWP have still not cleared tree debris from next to our access road, posing a serious bushfire risk.”

Bushfire Recovery Victoria was on-site last November and made safe several compromised trees (partly fallen) around the house and infrastructure.

“Central Highlands Rural Health has been great,” Mr Childs added.

Sullivan, will launch the Storm Recovery Book on both days.

The book, put together by Moorabool Shire Council’s Storm Recovery Team, is a collection of community stories, interviews and photos, documenting Moorabool’s experience on the night of the storm and the recovery journey since.

In December 2021, the storm impacted community members expressed an interest in a creative outlet for their storm stories and experiences.

The idea of a book was inspired by a similar project undertaken by the Scotsburn Community Recovery Committee following the fires in 2015-2016.

It aims to assist in social recovery and provide a physical reminder of the Moorabool community’s journey together since the storm.

“They are part of the recovery journey and are just a way of reconnecting,” Mr Madden said.

Mr Childs said his teenage daughter feels anxious and can’t sleep when there is windy weather.

“My wife feels anxious when driving under leaning trees. We all worry about trees falling and destroying our house or blocking access to the road again, especially in bushfire weather.”

Characters create memories

By Carol Saffer Local mum and business owner Jen Wallis has a passion for making every child’s birthday memorable.

Jen started Kids Parties Mascots in 2020 when she realised more than 100 mascot costumes were sitting in her garage as leftovers from a previous corporate business she had in Queensland.

“At the time, I thought to myself, I can sell all these costumes, which is a lot of work, or I could get off my bottom and try doing something new with them,” she told the Moorabool News.

Thus, her new children’s entertainment business was born when she created family treasure hunts events for people’s front and backyards with an easter bunny mascot over Easter that year.

Like many other businesses, “I was destroyed by COVID,” she said.

As a woman with initiative who thinks quickly on her feet, she pivoted to front door visits where the mascots would interact with the kids from outside their homes.

However, she said there was a plus side to lockdowns for her business.

“Because their kids had missed out on two or three birthdays in a row, I found a huge demand from parents to make up for the lost birthdays,” Ms Wallis said.

“I was fanatical about making that special birthday extra amazing, and together with

my team, we brought those kids’ favourite characters to life.”

There are 100 different characters to choose from for a party or an event.

The mascot character and a host work together at each hour-long event, with a focus on the birthday child, interacting with them and making them feel special.

The host organises the activities on the day in conjunction with the parents.

“The hosts might supervise a treasure hunt,

play pass the parcel with the kids, encourage dance game parties, help them decorate cupcakes or engage them with art and craft making,” Ms Wallis said.

On the rare occasion when the birthday child is scared of the character, the host then works with the parents to slowly get them together and create a fun time.

“We aim to make memories for the birthday child they will still remember in two years’ time.”

Kids Parties Mascots can cater for parties held almost anywhere; at home, in play centres, restaurants or in a park.

“Every party is completely different; whether there are two children of 50, we always strive to provide a happy time filled with fun, activities and interaction with our mascots.”

A woman has been fined and put on a good behaviour bond, after she was caught driving while disqualified in Ballan last year.

Anmaree Abbott appeared at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates’ Court on Friday 3 June via livestream, with Magistrate Hugh Radford hearing that Ms Abbott’s car was also impounded following the offence.

“On the 21st of July 2021, police were patrolling on Old Melbourne Road in Ballan, with the automatic number plate recognition system alerting police to a white holden SUV, flagging that the registered owner was a disqualified driver,” Police Prosecutor Sergeant Aimee Heal said.

“At 2:40 pm police spoke with the accused, she stated she was the registered owner of the car. Checks revealed that the accused had been suspended due to demerit points on the 10th of March 2021 for 6 months, so that would’ve expired on the 9th of September 2021. As her licence had expired during that period, it meant she was disqualified from obtaining a

licence until the end of the period.

“The accused was very cooperative with police and made full admissions of driving while suspended. Her car was impounded for 30 days at cost of $1355. She stated to police that she was driving to get to the doctors,” Sgt Heal told the court.

Supporting documents submitted by defence lawyer Matilda Jones confirmed Ms Abbott’s appointment with a doctor

on the day of the offending, which the Magistrate took into account.

“I’m going to require you to be on good behaviour until the 16th of September 2022, and pay $500 to the court fund.

I’ll adjourn this matter to the 16th of September for a diversion agreement,” Magistrate Radford said.

“And I’m not going to interfere with your licence,” he said.

Breath of fresh air for river

By Tim Bottams Moorabool River advocacy group People for a Living Moorabool have responded to a funding announcement in the 2022/23 State budget that will go towards supporting the waterway.

PALM’s coordinator Cameron Steele said the backing is “heartening” and will allow pressure to be lifted from the Moorabool, currently regarded as Victoria’s most flowstressed river.

“It’s certainly not all the answers we need for the river, but hopefully that will come when Geelong and Ballarat go towards a manufactured water source,” he said.

“Whether that means a recyclable alternative or desalination, it will allow pressure to come off the Moorabool, so we hope this is a good first step to recovering the river.

“There’s no doubt it’s currently dying.”

Mr Steele said the water assessment report showed a 20 per cent less inflow over 15 years.

“Fish are depopulating in some parts, and vegetation’s still encroaching onto it because of the lack of flow.”

The Moorabool River is just one of the waterways that will be supported as part of $30 million allocated for the draft Central and Gippsland Region Sustainable Water Strategy, which aims to support rivers and catchments across the State.

A further $26.6 million is pencilled in for the strategy next financial year, and Mr Steele said the group has been involved in the document’s drafting for about three years.

“Of course, we’ve been asking for more environmental flows, and there’s an indication that our requests will make its way into the document,” he said.

“We’re hoping once the draft goes through that it’ll help claw back some of the Moorabool’s water that’s been taken out of it with an upgrade to the Melbourne to Geelong pipeline.

“We’ll be very critical if we think it’s fallen short.”

Mr Steele said the Moorabool has been “dammed to death” along the northern regions and that 400,000 megalitres would be required to properly fill the river to accommodate for the region’s growing population.

“What it really needs is more water, and it needs that water left in it. You turn a tap on, and a lot of that water comes from rivers like this so we need to make sure we can continue to provide for it,” he said.
