By Lachlan Ellis Students have had the chance to learn about the physics of flight, and then put them into action, thanks to a gliding introduction session at the Bacchus Marsh Airfield.

Physics students from nearby Melton Christian College visited the Australian Gliding Museum on Saturday 28 May, checking out the historical exhibits, learning about the principles of flight from Rolf Buelter from the Geelong Gliding Club, and using a gliding simulator, before getting the chance to take to the skies with an instructor.

David Goldsmith is Vice President of the Australian Gliding Museum based at the Bacchus Marsh aerodrome, and said it was pleasing to see young people excited about gliding.

“We split the kids into two groups, one went to fly gliders with the Geelong Gliding Club, and the other stayed and did a museum tour before flying with the gliding simulator.

They certainly enjoyed themselves and had a great time, they were very enthusiastic,” Mr Goldsmith told the Moorabool News.

“I only did one flight because I was mainly doing the museum tours, but I took one young lady up for a flight. She was a little bit tentative at first, but once we got in the air she came out of her shell and absolutely loved it. She flew the glider herself under instruction and did very well for her first real flight, she had used the simulator,” he said.

“The enthusiasm that these young people had after their flight was fantastic. Before they get to be drivers, if you can teach kids when they’re young, they learn very quickly. Once they’ve done some flying, they’re natural pilots, and it stays with them for the rest of their life. We invite any young people who are interested in flying or gliding to come to Bacchus Marsh Airfield on a Saturday or Sunday.”

The Museum is volunteer-run and showcases the history of gliding, as far back as 1896 – the year in which the Lilienthal Glider, which the Museum has a replica of, was first built.

The show will go on, finally A long-awaited art show is finally going ahead over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend, and will finally be able to celebrate its 50th anniversary, with over 500 pieces of art on display.

The Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh has tried three times over the past two years to hold its 50th Anniversary Art Show and Sale, with COVID outbreaks forcing the event to be postponed each time.

But the Show is finally going ahead, and will be open in the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall from Saturday 11 June until Monday 13 June.

The Show has a long and proud history, providing a showcase for the incredible talent of both local and interstate artists, and being one of the major social and artistic events on the calendar in Bacchus Marsh.

The Bacchus Marsh Art Show is one of the longest-running art shows in Australia, let alone regional Victoria, and to commemorate this, the Show will feature displays of historical items tracking the changes over the years.

“The Bacchus Marsh Art Show is a major fundraiser for the Rotary Club, with all proceeds being distributed to organisations and programs in the local area as well as internationally,” Peter Kay said.

“There will be a variety of artwork for sale on the day, from oils, watercolours, acrylics, sculptures, wood, wool, photography, and more.”

The Rotary Club invites the whole community to come down and view the amazing exhibits, and enjoy the calm ambience of the Show.

The number of artworks has been slightly restricted to allow the wonderful artists from the last cancelled Show in September 2021 to roll over their works. The event will now feature between 530 and 550 works, with prices ranging from $30 to $7,500.

In total, $12,700 in prize money will be awarded. The Judge will be Beckett Rozenthals from the National Gallery of Victoria, who was also the Judge at the 2014 Show.

‘Waste of time to consult’ (EPA)

By Lachlan Ellis The Victorian Ombudsman released a report last week on the EPA’s approval of three sites for West Gate Tunnel soil storage, confirming the community’s concerns that the EPA “left them in the dark”.

Ombudsman Deborah Glass began her report in August last year, examining how the EPA came to its decision to approve sites run by Maddingley Brown Coal (MBC) Bacchus Marsh, Cleanaway (Ravenhall), and Bulla (Sunbury), to store PFAS-contaminated soil from the West Gate Tunnel Project.

Communities surrounding the three sites, concerned about the effects PFAS could have on them, complained that they were left out of the discussion – in her report published on 31 May, Ms Glass agreed with those communities.

While the EPA was found to have “done its job according to the science”, deeming the PFAS concentration in the soil to be a low risk to any nearby communities, it “plainly failed to convince the community” of the low risk and only “achieved the bare minimum required by legislation”.

“It [the EPA] did not compromise on the environmental protections. It assessed the danger of PFAS was likely to be low but adopted a cautious approach to the management of the spoil, requiring all landfill operators to safely contain PFAS at ten times the amount likely to be present in the spoil,” Ms Glass told the Moorabool News.

Community consultation largely consisted of providing factual information, much of it redacted, on their website,” Ms Glass said.

“The failure to engage meaningfully with affected people caused an erosion of trust between the EPA and the community.

The lack of information, of meaningful engagement, exacerbated the fear and anxiety in the community. An EPA official told us they thought it would be a ‘waste of time’ to consult because of the level of anger in the community. So local people told us they did not feel they were being listened to, their concerns were not being addressed, and the EPA had to be taken to court for communities to be heard.”

Derek Madden CEO Moorabool Shire Council told the Moorabool News that Council welcomes the apology by the EPA. “Community consultation, or lack thereof, was one of the main concerns Council had with the approval process for Maddingley to be a proposed as a site,” he said.

report, EPA CEO Lee Miezis put out a media statement, and also appeared at a media conference, apologising for the EPA’s actions.

“We certainly acknowledge that there were significant shortcomings in our engagement with the community. Whilst the protection of the community and the protection on the environment was always at the forefront of decision-making, there were shortcomings in how we engaged with and explained those considerations to the community.

We accept those, and for the distress that that has caused to those communities, we apologise,” Mr Miezis said at the May 31 media conference.

“While our decisions will always be based on science and the law, we have made significant improvements to how we engage with local communities about issues that affect them. This has been acknowledged by the Ombudsman in her report. The Ombudsman has made four recommendations, all of which are accepted in full by the EPA.” While the Ombudsman’s report will not affect the EPA’s approvals of the three sites, Mr Miezis says the EPA “will use the Ombudsman’s report and her recommendations to ensure the improvements we are making to our organisation continue”.

What is the real story?

Advertisements (pictured) have been placed in the Moorabool News and other local publications just outside the shire however, Council also placed one advert in the Canberra Times. Why? Derek Madden is the CEO Moorabool Shire Council and told the Moorabool News it was important to take out these ads locally to correct the misinformation AusNet has put out to the local community.

“Council requested AusNet remove some items relating to the undergrounding of powerlines due to what we felt were misleading and inaccurate statements,” he said.

“AusNet refused and placed a number of advertisements locally, highlighting some of the facts we felt required further analysis and explanation.”

Within the advertisement, Council dispels, what they regard as ‘misinformation’. Underground would be 16 times more expensive; Council says underground HVDC option is only six times more expensive than the current overhead plan.

Ausnet say undergrounding would require a 30-metre easement; with a HVDC cable, Council said it would only require a 3-metre easement. The advertisement also addressed the path of the overhead towers, disturbance to flora, fauna and agriculture, and farming practices.

Mr Madden said the independent report Council commissioned uncovered the truth about the cost of both options, and the environmental and community impact on putting the powerlines overhead.

“We also ran the ad in The Canberra Times and will write to the new Cabinet Ministers in the Albanese Government so they are aware of the work that has been done proving that putting the powerlines underground is viable.”

The advertisement was also displayed on Council’s Facebook page, resulting in positive responses.

“It shows the community definitely supports our position and are pleased we are pursuing this with both AusNet and other levels of Government,” Mr Madden said.

AusNet responds to advertisement A spokesperson for AusNet Services told the Moorabool News, last year they engaged independent experts to investigate placing the proposed Western Renewables Link underground.

“The experts examined route selection, electricity transmission and cost estimation based on the key project requirements set by the Australian Energy Market Operator, who contracted AusNet Services to investigate and build this critical project,” the spokesperson said.

“We fully understand the concern and uncertainty a project of this size can create. And we are continuing to engage and consult with communities and landholders, right along the route.”

The spokesperson said AusNet know undergrounding is an important issue for the community and it is an option they are continuing to investigate as part of the Environment Effects Statement (EES) process.

“AusNet will continue to work with Moorabool Council, and all other stakeholders, as the project progresses towards the EES phase, where it will be independently assessed by a panel.”

Initiative continues to grow Tsk tsk, driving whilst on the phone

By Lachlan Ellis A man has been found guilty for two separate offences on the same day, after being busted last year driving without an interlock, while also using his mobile phone.

Jamie Laurens-Hoyne appeared at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on Friday 20 May, with the police prosecutor telling Magistrate Hugh Radford the accused had admitted committing the offences.

“On Saturday the 27th of February 2021 at 1:53 pm, police were patrolling Parwan Road in Bacchus Marsh. They observed a white Mitsubishi approaching a roundabout travelling northbound. The driver was holding a mobile phone in both hands held up to the steering wheel. Police spoke to the accused, his licence had an interlock condition starting 21 Feb 2017 with an indefinite end date. The accused was within the condition period at the time,” Leading Senior Constable Clare Kane said.

“He admitted knowledge of the interlock condition and using his phone … he said his wife was on WorkCover and couldn’t drive, and he was on the way to pick up a car with the interlock condition.”

Mr Laurens-Hoyne entered a plea of guilty and agreed with the summary, explaining that his wife “is a paramedic and broke her ankle, so I was in her car”.

He asked the Magistrate to deal with the matter under Section 76 – that is, to use his discretion to prove and dismiss the charge without further penalty.

Magistrate Radford denied that request, instead issuing Mr Laurens-Hoyne with a $600 fine without conviction.

One of Moorabool’s most beautiful features are its plentiful trees, and this year Council is continuing to help nature thrive in Moorabool but a group of volunteer planters are hoping for better collaboration.

Council commits $100,000 towards planting, managing, and maintaining more than 18,000 trees across Moorabool every year.

Starting this month, Council’s tree planting initiative will focus on Brady’s Lane in Greendale, Jonathan Drive in Darley, replacing vandalised trees in Bungaree, and continuing the nature strip tree replacement program.

Council’s ongoing planting initiation, alongside community support and planting days, are seeing the number and variety of trees continue to increase.

Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said it was a joy to be surrounded by picturesque nature living in Moorabool, including the wide variety of trees.

“Our trees are one of Moorabool’s greatest assets,” Cr Sullivan said.

“They are loved by everyone in all their different sizes, colours, shapes, and varieties. We are grateful to Council for their commitment to planting more trees each year and for caring for our existing trees. The trees bring joy to us all.”

Council’s Park & Gardens team carefully select the appropriate species of tree for each location, considering a range of criteria including climate, soil conditions, and the look, feel, and health of trees.

“We always welcome more tree planting and encourage Council to consult with the community about which trees to plant, and how best to encourage more tree coverage – particularly around the populated parts of the Shire,” Mr Davison told the Moorabool News.

“We were fortunate enough to have some funding from another community organisation from some years ago...when we went to Caledonian Park we realised the gazebo area was overgrown, there were a lot of invasive species, and

there wasn’t very good tree cover, so we undertook works to beautify the area and put in some retreats.

“We engaged with Council, and it became clear they didn’t have the gazebo listed on their maps, and they had basically I guess drawn a line in Caledonian Park that was a bit short, in terms of where it ended. I’ve never had any contact from the Council on planting, I’ve had more from the Moorabool News,” he said.

In response to questions about collaboration with the Arboretum Group, Council CEO Derek Madden said, “Council has historically engaged and worked with the Ballan Arboretum Group and welcomes ongoing discussion in relation to tree plantings in line with our strategy and budget parameters”.

By Helen Tatchell Once a ‘bald hill’, the area has now been adorned with over 1000 steps and with Stage 1 and 2 completed and officially opened, Stage 3 just received budgeted funding from the state government.

In wintery and icy conditions last week, Minister for Tourism, Sport and Major Events, Martin Pakula announced $2.1 million to complete the third Stage.

Situated on Bald Hill in Darley, the 1000+ steps Stage 3 project will include an allabilities trail at the summit, designed to capture 360-degree views across Moorabool and back towards Melbourne; six thematically designed sculptures, which will be located along the trail and provide a link to the sculpture trail at the base of the 1000+ Steps at Telford Park; and a car park constructed off Swans Road.

“This funding, directly from the 2022/23 budget, will provide better access to the Bald Hill Summit,” Minister Pakula said.

“The upgrade will support 11 jobs and will attract more than 146,000 additional visitors to Bacchus Marsh once it’s up and running.

The activation of Bald Hill for Stage 3 will have lots of great new amenity as part of that, with incredible views over Moorabool with Melbourne also on the skyline.

“This is a wonderful community facility, and these projects are great, not just to allow people to see around the beautiful vista but helps people to stay fit and well. This is a great opportunity for family walks, for picnics up the top and for the community to get together.”

Mr Pakula said walking paths are really popular all over Melbourne and Victoria but this one, as the mayor said, it is inflation at work, 1000 plus steps not just 1000. The funding will ensure the project will be as good as it possibly can be.

The Minister gave thanks to Council, as “these things can only be done as a partnership”.

“Government can’t do them on their own and sometimes Council need some government support to make them a reality. This is really the epitome of working together.

“When completed it will be a great asset to this community,” he said.

And, once you have reached the top, there will be summit amenities including a trail, shelter, tables, seating, wayfinding, interpretive signage and accessible toilets.

Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said this coming together of government and Council has seen something achieved for the community.

“The car park will be at the back of the scout hall with an existing car park already in place that Council will be expanding, with a new entry off Halletts Way.” Mr Jeffrey said in Stage 3 of the project, there will also be a carpark and accessibility trail at the top.

“Accessibility trails will be at both Telford Park and the summit,” he said.

“This is a fantastic project for our region, one that will substantially increase tourism in this area,” he said.

“This will help people enjoy healthy lifestyles; to get out here and be able to walk up these steps will be a benefit to not only the locals, but the wider community as well.”

The steps complement hundreds of tree plantings by volunteers over the years through Grow West.

The project is due to be complete by mid-2024.

Phase one of the redevelopment, which included the 1000+ Steps, rest stops, a lookout, and road crossings, is now open to the public and was funded by the Regional Jobs and Infrastructure Fund.

Honour for tireless volunteer

UPDATE - Japanese encephalitis Agriculture Victoria is working closely with both the pig and horse industries in response to Japanese encephalitis.

There are now a total of 23 properties with pigs confirmed with Japanese encephalitis in Victoria.

These are located across the Wangaratta, Moira, Greater Shepparton, Campaspe, Gannawarra, Loddon, Greater Bendigo and Northern Grampians local government areas.

Japanese encephalitis has also been confirmed in piggeries in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia and in a small number of feral pigs in the Northern Territory.

Infection is not spread directly from pigs to people, and there is no risk to humans from eating pig meat. Only infected mosquitoes can spread infection.

Pork is safe to eat.

In general, spread is through the movement of some species of migratory water birds and through the movement of infected mosquitoes, often over long distances.

It does not usually spread directly from animal to animal (i.e. it is not considered contagious).

Japanese encephalitis vaccines are recommended for people at a higher risk of exposure to the virus, such as those working with pigs. All people should undertake measures to reduce exposure to mosquitoes.

A petition to commemorate a local legend, by renaming his beloved recreation reserve in his honour, has been accepted

by Moorabool Shire Council, with over 100 people backing the renaming.

A petition to rename the Elaine Recreation Reserve the ‘Ron Read Recreation Reserve’ came before Council at its Ordinary Meeting on Wednesday 1 June, with a whopping 106 signatures attached to the petition.

Mr Read, a former President of the Elaine Recreation Reserve Committee of Management, spent more than three decades tending to the reserve, and was known as a hard-working volunteer, attending many community events.

He passed away last year on 6 September 2021, with the petition stating that the signatories “feel that it would be a lasting tribute to a man who put in more than 30 years tending to his much loved reserve for the benefit of the entire community”.

Councillors voted unanimously to accept the petition and commission a report into the renaming, that will now be prepared by Council officers.

Bacchus Marsh Police took to social media to thank the community last week.

Information was received about ongoing suspicious activity at a local park. Police increased patrols of the area as a result of this information.

“On Sunday the 29th of May we arrested and charged a 28 year old male with Sexual Activity Directed At Another Person, Stalking and drug related offences,” the post read.

The male from Maddingley was refused bail and will appear in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates’ court on 10 June.

Westgate Highway Patrol members have detected a vehicle travelling at excessive speed on a rural road. The vehicle was being driven by a 30-year-old Maddingley woman.

Last Wednesday 1 June at around 11.40am, police members clocked the car travelling at a staggering 156kmp/h in a 100kmp/h zone on the rural area of Ballan Road, Quandong.

VicPol members intercepted the female driver, and the vehicle was immediately impounded at a cost of $1300.

Big Freeze slides into Marsh

By Lachlan Ellis A wintery blast has meant cooler temperatures of late however, a bigger freeze is coming.

COVID meant last year’s event had to be cancelled, but the Big Freeze for Fight MND in the Marsh will go ahead this year, with some familiar faces dressing up and sliding into the ice for a great cause.

The fun will begin at 2.15 pm on Saturday 11 June at Maddingley Park, prior to the Seniors Bacchus Marsh v Sunbury football match.

Confirmed sliders include former Footscray legend Doug Hawkins, Presidents of the Bacchus Marsh and Sunbury Football Clubs, and Ebonie Boreham from Ray White Bacchus Marsh.

Despite a recent battle with COVID and pneumonia, Greendale’s Phil O’Keefe – who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in May 2015 – has put his hand up to be the face of the local fight against MND once again, with wife Triss to slide into the ice on Saturday.

Mr O’Keefe said it was important to give a “local flavour” to the Big Freeze.

“It was a shame last year’s event was cancelled, but that’s the way it goes. We’re looking forward to a big day on Saturday. As a local person with the illness, it gives a good local flavour to the event, makes it a bit more personal for people who live locally,” he told the Moorabool News.

“Living with MND has gotten harder progressively. MND takes away all your physical ability to do things, and after a time it takes away your voice. It’s a frustrating experience, to tell you the truth.”

When asked why he volunteered to be involved with the Big Freeze again despite his recent illness, Mr O’Keefe’s response was a defiant “I’m still here!”

“You’ve got to keep on doing things while you still can. The point isn’t just to raise money for MND research and support the Danihers, but also to support local people. If I can still assist in that regard, then I’ll keep on assisting,” he said.

Triss O’Keefe said that while times had been tough financially for people through the COVID pandemic, she hoped people would spare what they could to help find treatments and a cure for MND. “Whatever funds we can raise will be fantastic. It’s one of the very few diseases which, once diagnosed, is a terminal life sentence. The average expectancy is 27 months, but Phil’s had MND for over seven years, so we’re really grateful for that, and to be able to help find a cure,” she said.

Event organiser Anne Phyland said Mr O’Keefe’s fighting spirit was incredible, and that every dollar counts in the fight against the “mongrel disease” that is MND. “The O’Keefe family are experiencing MND firsthand…what Phil has been able to achieve with the ‘Stentrode’ stent trial he’s participating in is nothing short of phenomenal, it’s blown all expectations out of the water. He’s doing that selflessly, to help people in the future who will benefit from the trial,” Ms Phyland said.

“His dedication, and the passion and rallying for the cause from him and Triss…the support they’ve gathered, particularly in Greendale, is incredible. And it’s really important to be able to have this community event, with the support of the footy clubs.”

At the time of writing, almost $7,100 has been raised from donations, with a goal of $15,000.

Murky waters on land access

By Lachlan Ellis The state regulator has set out a new ‘Statement of Expectations’ for how electricity transmission companies access private land – but it remains to be seen how a company planning local power lines will comply.

The Essential Services Commission (ESC) put its Statement of Expectations into effect on Wednesday 1 June, with transmission company AusNet – which is planning the high voltage overhead powerlines as part of the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project (WVTNP) – welcoming the news.

“The Statement of Expectations will help to ensure the community can hold us to account against clear guidelines of how we are to approach negotiating land access and agreement making,” AusNet’s Chief Development Officer, Chad Hymas, said in a media release.

“AusNet acknowledges how frustrating and upsetting the process of land access has been for some landholders. We hope that the Statement of Expectations and the training our staff and contractors are doing to deliver this, will improve the experience for landholders, acknowledging the challenges experienced to date.”

Mr Hymas added that AusNet is “absolutely committed to working closely with the

Essential Services Commission to ensure the community’s expectations are fulfilled and the process is improved in the future”.

Among the principles within the Statement of Expectations are to “ensure staged, timely engagement and consultation”, “employ respectful two-way communication”, and “make clear when and why access is required”.

But community groups fighting plans for the WVTNP to go overhead aren’t convinced much will change with how AusNet operates.

Community group Stop AusNet’s Towers has been protesting AusNet’s plans for the network for the past two years, including how it accesses private properties, through methods the group has called “heavy-handed”.

Chair of Stop AusNet’s Towers, Emma Muir,

said the ESC’s Statement of Expectations may help keep AusNet accountable for any future wrongdoing regarding land access, but said Mr Hymas’ response was “all spin”.

“I hope we can use this Statement of Expectations to hold AusNet to account, and when they don’t do the correct thing, that we will be able to make sure they are held accountable by the ESC and the Energy and Water Ombudsman of Victoria,” Ms Muir told the Moorabool News.

“If they wanted to do the right thing, they should’ve started two years ago. They’ve lost all social licence with us, I don’t know how signing up to a Statement of Expectations will now get us to open the door for them. It’s not going to, we still don’t trust them, they still lie and deceive us. You can’t erase that by signing up to a piece of paper.”

Ms Muir also said she hoped the new Federal Government would see some change in how the WVTNP is planned.

“When we met with Chris Bowen, who is now the Energy Minister, he said he will be speaking to AEMO and bringing them more into the group. They’ve committed to the Rewiring the Nation policy and to changing to RIT-T process…that’s the commitment he gave to us, but the proof will be in the pudding obviously,” she said.

Charges laid over May-hem on roads Darley murder

By Helen Tatchell Homicide Squad detectives charged a man on Monday 30 May with murder following the death of a woman in Darley on Saturday night, 28 May. The 20-year-old man from Darley appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on the Monday and will reappear for a committal mention in October this year.

Emergency services were called to an address in Egan Court about 10.30pm and upon arrival police found a 67-year-old woman with critical injuries, she could not be revived and died at the scene.

Police said the parties involved were known to each other.

A gofund me page has been set up to cover the costs of the funeral for the deceased woman by a close friend of the family.

“I am organising this gofund me page to help with funeral costs and any expenses they may encounter at this terrible time,” the post read.

“The circumstances are beyond belief; I simply cannot imagine what they are going through.

“The donations to this page will help the family give her the most beautiful farewell that she deserves, as well as family counselling for the husband, kids and grandchildren.”

The post continued to say the family appreciate the love and support given by family, friends and the community.

The deceased woman posted on social media a “happy 19th birthday. Have a great day, love Ma and Pop xxxooo” in March 2021 to the alleged 20-year-old charged with her murder.

Local VicPol members in the Moorabool Police Service Area, have been busy focusing on traffic and driving during the month of May. They took to social media with their message.

“Driving conditions are changing, speed zones are not,” the post read.

Home sweet home for wildlife

By Lachlan Ellis There are unique and beautiful wildlife within Moorabool, and an upcoming free session will help the community design gardens that help our fauna continue to thrive.

Gardens for Wildlife partners with the community and local governments across the state, to build knowledge of wildlife and caring for the land – and the local chapter is running an information session at the Ballan Library.

From 10 am to 12 pm on Saturday 18 June, Moorabool Gardens for Wildlife will show participants how best to help local animals thrive, no matter what kind of backyard you have.

Elspeth Swan is a member of Moorabool Gardens for Wildlife, and said even small changes to a garden can provide huge benefits for wildlife.

“Every garden provides a space for wildlife. Whether it is a small garden, vegetable patch, courtyard, balcony, community or school garden, everyone can contribute to providing more habitat for urban wildlife. As more houses are built in our towns natural places for wildlife are reduced.

Gardeners can make a big difference by choosing what to plant in their gardens and focussing on what benefits wildlife,” Ms Swan told the Moorabool News.

“Taking time to consider what wildlife such as birds, insects, frogs and lizards really need, ensures we can have our gardens and do our bit to support a thriving patch of nature.”

The talk will cover basic ingredients to include in a wildlife friendly garden, and provide simple tips to attract more birds and butterflies.

Some of the items to be covered include planting in layers, nectar and indigenous plants, birdbaths, frog ponds, nest boxes, wildlife safety, and places for lizards.

“Anyone with an interest in trying wildlife gardening is welcome. Participants will learn they don’t need to do a complete garden makeover but may make a difference on a small scale, with something simple like a birdbath and some containers of native grass, a correa, and daisies,” Ms Swan said.

Man cops a break

By Lachlan Ellis A man charged with driving while suspended has had his case dismissed, as his car was being driven by someone else who refused to accept the consequences.

Adam Harper appeared before Magistrate Hugh Radford at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates’ Court on Friday 20 May, and said although he had previous driving offences, it was his boss borrowing his car on the most recent occasion, not him.

“I hit my demerit point cap prior and agreed to do a 12-month no demerit point bond or something. On the 5th of July I got another infringement…that was actually my old boss in my ute at the time,” Mr Harper told the court.

“He was meant to take that demerit point but didn’t, he just kept coming up with excuses … ‘oh I lost the paperwork, I don’t have the money’… so I ended up paying for the fine even though I received the demerit point.

“The end story was that he dropped it off to the Clunes Police Station to a woman which after I found out I’d been

suspended, I chased up…there’s no woman that works at Clunes Police Station, so that was another obvious lie.”

Magistrate Radford was sympathetic to Mr Harper’s situation.

“I have a discretion to prove and dismiss the charge. You’ve acknowledged the wrongdoing, there’ll be no further penalty,” the Magistrate said.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics Bacchus Marsh Cross Country athletes competed at two different venues on Saturday.

The Centre’s weekly competition was held at Lady Northcote Camp, Glenmore while the State Cross Country Relay Championships were held at Cruden Farm, Langwarrin.

The Boys Under 10 team consisting of James White, Logan Simons and Zeke Horne were first to represent the Centre at the State Championships. All boys competed over 1km. James led the team out over the 1k course running a time of 5.00 mins before handing over to second runner Logan Simons. Logan ran a strong race to complete the course in 4.48 mins. Zeke Horne finished strongly running a time of 4.19 mins. The boys placed 28th overall, in a time of 14.07mins.

Next up for the morning was the Under 10 girls, also running 3 legs of a 1km course.

Anni Clarke and Scarlett Wake were promoted up an age group, to fill a Western Metro Region representative team. All girls ran exceptional well. Anni led the team out as first runner, completing the course in 4.32 mins. Scarlett ran second for the team and produced a time of 5.12 mins while Melton’s Balreet Mann bought the team home in 4.18 mins, gaining several placings in the later stages of the race for the team to place 11th overall.

In the afternoon, the Boys Under 12 team comprising of Patrick Lovett, Lachlan Simons and Dushan Baniluk all completed a 1.5km leg of the relay. Patrick guided the Bacchus Marsh team out over the course running a time of 6.22 mins, and at the changeover saw the team placed mid field in the pack.

Lachlan running the 2nd leg maintained the team’s placing, splitting the clock at 6.30 mins before handing over to Dushan to bring the team home in a time of 6.32 mins. Consistent running from all boys saw them finish 9th place in an overall time of 19.24 mins. ***

Meanwhile, remaining athletes travelled out to Glenmore and were greeted with a lovely winter’s morning, as the sun shone over the camps grounds of Lady Northcote Camp.

First race for the morning was the Under 7 & 8 1km event. Melton’s Fletcher Reid crossed the finish line in 1st place followed by Emilia Ibrahim (BM) in a PB time of 4.33.22 mins, while Harry Johansen claimed 3rd place.

Archie Clarke, Patrick Delaney, Ivy Wooding and Cindy Hawken all recorded PB times for the 1km.

Next up were the Under 6s competing over 500 metres. This was an exciting race as Hendrix Wake and Bowie Clarke battled it out over the entire distance. Bowie produced his best performance thus far but was narrowly pipped on the line by Hendrix.

Hayden Tung produced an outstanding run to place 3rd overall with a PB result. Victoria Hannan continues to improve and was the first girl home in a PB performance while Melton’s Tegh Mann also recorded a PB result.

The Under 9 and 10 athletes competed over 1.5kms. Bacchus Marsh’s Angus Norman ran a determined race and led the race from start to finish to claim his first win for the season in a PB time of 6:41.11 with Joshua Askew (BM) and Iyla Robinson (BM) claiming the minor placings. Bacchus Marsh athletes Mitchell Tung, Mackenzie Delaney and Ben Wooding all ran PB’s for the event.

With low attendance numbers in the Under 11-16 age groups due to State Relays and other sporting commitments it was decided to combine the age groups for the final event of the day. The Under 11 & 12s ran their 2kms while the Open Age athletes completed an additional 1km loop for their 3km event.

Myah Estlick ran a very controlled race taking the win for the Under 11s in a time of 9:43.40mins while Lily Norman was the

Melton’s Allyson Currall ran a massive PB, slicing almost a minute off her previous time, to be the first Open Age girl home while the welcome return of Kira Watts saw her cross the line 3rd overall.

Central Highland Netball League Central Highlands Football League Ballan Brumbies Basketball A banner weekend for Ballan Brumbies, with 13 wins and just four losses - two of those losses by a solitary point and another to a fellow Brumbies outfit.

After a less than satisfactory loss last week, the Under 14 Boys B took on ladder leader Excies Acmy looking to get their campaign back on track. Brumbies were attempting to move back into the top four, Excies to consolidate top spot on the ladder.

Ballan shot out of the gate, racing to an 8-0 lead inside three minutes through Angus Tranter and James Pace.

Excies found their footing with baskets to leading scorers Henry Hopkinson and the sweet shooting Ned Williamson, pegging Ballan back to tie the game at 12 apiece.

Wary of Ballan’s superior size, Excies packed the paint, risking a barrage of outside shots from the Brumbies array of shooters. Unfortunately for Ballan, the likes of Jack Clark, Fletcher Garner, Will Rogers and Cruze Miller were unusually off target. Tranter and Barney Batiste were still able to control the offensive glass, however. Tranter was perhaps unlucky not to head to the free throw line on a number of occasions, though Batiste was able to capitalise with easy put backs. Batiste in particular was able to power through Excies defense to push the lead back out. A late pair of Tranter free throws saw Ballan lead 19-14 at the break.

In the 2nd half Ballan started to run a more structured offense to try and free their interior scorers. Unfortunately, Batiste and Tranter were unable to extend Ballan’s lead, missing easy opportunities. Those missed shots led to a series of Excies fast breaks. A combination of Excies speed and some lax transition defense from Ballan saw Excies eradicate the margin, taking the lead on a Hunter Stevenson layup.

The lead swapped hands a few times over the next few minutes as both teams traded baskets, Batiste keeping Ballan in the game with some inspired offense. Ballan reclaimed the lead for the final time after Clark drained a tough basket inside before Tranter converted from yet another offensive board.

Tight defense on Excies perimeter scorers saw their offense run dry, resorting to long shots and playing into the hands of Ballan’s bigger bodies. A late drive and pump fake by Pace followed by a baseline jumpshot from Miller stretched the margin out to seven points, Ballan prevailing 33-26 in a match that was even closer than that tight score line suggested.

Bacchus Marsh Tigers Baseball Results - Round 7

Bacchus Marsh Tigers 9 def East Belmont Saints 4 The Tigers faced a full-strength Saints side to close out the first 3rd of the season. First couple of innings were tight, Bacchus Marsh jumping ahead followed by Saints scoring a few runs off some errors in the field. Most of the game was 4-3 Bacchus Marsh way before the Tigers were able to hit away 5-1 runs in the last innings to seal the game.

It was father/son duo Dean and Cooper Wallace’s first game for the Tigers with both notching up a hit each and some solid fielding.

Adrian Terry pitched the whole game on the hill with Thomas Shaw, Jared Warwick, and Dean Wallace all getting two hits each. Some smart batting from Chloe Warwick and Adrian Terry led to two walks each also.

Doo you want me in Queensland?

By Tim O'Connor (HRV) Mick Stanley’s top four-year-old Rock N Roll Doo did his The Rising Sun chances no harm with a dominant first-up victory at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night.

Stanley is hoping to gain a start in Queensland’s feature for three and fouryear-old pacers at Albion Park on July 9.

This year, the race has received a $50,000 prizemoney increase to $305,000 and also includes a $100,000 bonus for a three-yearold victor.

Rock N Roll Doo had not raced since running last in both the Group 1 Chariots of Fire and Schweppes Sprint at Menangle in February, but had little trouble handling his rivals in Saturday night’s Beraldo Pace.

After slowly working around to the front from barrier four, Rock N Roll Doo was able to control things out in front before powering clear in the sprint home to win by 8m on the line.

“I said last year through the Derby - and a

few people might have scoffed at me a little bit - that this horse, I thought, was potentially the best horse I've trained,” Stanley said.

“And I think the way he keeps improving, he's going to have every chance to prove that.”

Better Eclipse (Jess Tubbs), Ladies In Red (Emma Stewart), Ripp (Bernie Hewitt) and Leap To Fame (Grant Dixon) are the four horses already invited to The Rising Sun, with the winner of the Queensland Sun on July 2 also gaining a spot in the field. The other seven runners (and one emergency) will be decided by handicappers via the nomination process, which closes on July 4.

A Group 2 Paleface Adios Stakes winner at Menangle on February 12, Rock N Roll Doo has now won eight of 23 career starts.

"We all chase around a lot of horses to find a good one, and when you do find one like that it's a great feeling,” Stanley said.

Stanley said Rock N Roll Doo would have one more run here in Victoria before heading north for the Queensland winter carnival.

'Mum's in a better place now' - John Justice

By Tim O'Connor (HRV) Handy pacer Helluva provided a little glimmer of joy in a tough week for John Justice when he won the opening event at Melton on Saturday night.

John’s mother and respected harness racing figure Josie Justice passed away on Tuesday after a short battle with cancer, and the Toolern Vale horseman spoke about her following the gelding’s victory in the DNR Logistics Pace.

“It's been a bit of a tough week, but Mum's in a better place now and she's not in any pain,” John said.

“She's up there looking down and probably helping me a bit in the last couple of days.

“Right up to the very end she was still organising the stable, making sure there was plenty of oats, the harness was clean and (checking) how they've been track working. It was just her whole life.

“She had a good life so we can't complain. She came on the 31st of May and left on the 31st of May.” Josie passed on her 91st birthday, closing a chapter on a life of devotion to the sport and her family, who are poised to carry on her legacy for generations.

She was at the forefront of many people's minds on Saturday night, with a minute's silence at Tabcorp Park before the running of the fifth event on the card.

Cobras go down in the wet

By Todd Whelan Bacchus Marsh v North Ballarat North Ballarat returned to the winners list with a comfortable 27-point win over an undermanned Bacchus Marsh at Mars Stadium. After scores were level at quarter time, Brendan Macartney’s men booted the next six goals of the game to put the contest beyond doubt in trying conditions, moving ahead of their win/loss ledger and back into fourth place on the BFNL ladder. The Cobras sit in eighth place, a game and percentage outside of the top six.

Trying conditions may be the understatement of the year given all nature’s elements were represented as winter announced its arrival in the ‘West’. The lights of Mars Stadium had little effect on improving the spectacle but without them, it would’ve been near impossible to watch.

Cobras coach Tom German, while disappointed with the loss commended his players for effort.

“We had quite a few out but the guys battled hard all day,” he said.

“We just didn’t get reward for our effort in the first quarter especially.”

You have to respect German for not delving too much into the ‘few outs’ as he put it. Depleted was the more operative word in fairness as the Cobras who made the trip without German, Jack Williams, Jason Robinson, Nick Stuhldrier, Daniel Veldon and Max Eastmure. The task on the road was always going to be difficult but with the combination of willing effort and undeniable tempering conditions the end result wasn’t too damaging on the scoreboard.

McCartney endorsed the sentiments of German in the post-match.

“An undermanned Bacchus Marsh did a mighty job as a club,” he said. “(On our own performance) we worked harder this week and resembled much more of how we want to be.”

The next generation of Cobras to honour the call up over recent weeks have been Michael Garafolo, Josh Calvitto, William Cook, Ashton Craig, Jack Kovacevik, Ethan McKercher, Miesen brothers Dominic and Zachary and 21-year-old Xavier Jenks. When you include more seasoned trio Jack Parente, Alex and Riley Porter it equates to a very young list, not mentioning promising forward Joel Freeman who debuted in Round six. Surely, we’ll be hearing more of some of these names over the Cobras journey under German.

For the winners Jack Riding (1 goal), Ned Nash and Jamie Quick (2 goals) were the cleanest ball users in the conditions, while Jake Owen (defence), Alex Porter and Riley Stuhldrier never gave up the fight for the Cobras in atrocious conditions.

The Cobras face a must win game against Sunbury at Maddingley Park in a standalone BFNL fixture over the Queen’s Birthday weekend this Saturday.

GERMAN (B/Marsh) - North Ballarat had a good spread around the ground and converted their opportunities when they had them. They were a bit cleaner around the ground which helped when going inside their forward 50.

moments but the more games we get into our young guy, the more accustomed they will be to the pace and pressure.

Rate your ‘midfielders’ performance GERMAN - Were super for the most part. We had good contribution from our mids but just got caught on the spread at times.

Rate your ‘defenders’ performance GERMAN - Held up well and fought the game out. Had a few new faces playing down there as well. Jake Owen was super.
