Only three have a voice

Most of the Moorabool Shire falls under the new electorate of Hawke in the upcoming federal election this Saturday 21 May. There are 11 candidates vying for the one seat of Hawke however, only two of those 11 say they actually live in the electorate. Jarrod Bingham lives in Darley and Sam Rae Ballan, despite rumours he resides in Riddells Creek. “I moved to Ballan a few months ago from Riddells Creek,” Mr Rae confirmed to the Moorabool News. Young 18-year-old candidate Max Martucci lives on the cusp of Hawke and McEwen. “I live in Bullgengarook and the boundary to both electorates is the road out the front of my house, and that puts me officially in McEwen,” he told the Moorabool News. It is not an AEC requirement for candidates to live in the electorate they are campaigning for the seat of. At least one candidate, who failed to respond for comment, is living in Queensland. The three (pictured) were the only candidates who responded to the Moorabool News to answer questions that will enlighten voters of their choice at the polling booth. lives in Ballan (Hawke) “Recently I was joined by Catherine King, Shadow Infrastructure Minister, to announce that a Federal Labor Government would invest $10 million to kickstart the Western Freeway Upgrade. This will give us the business case to understand the best solutions to upgrade this significant stretch of road. When complete, this project would deliver a quicker and safer commute for tens of thousands of locals in Moorabool Shire and Melton City Council. An Albanese Labor Government will partner with Moorabool Shire Council and commit $400,000 to upgrade Federation Park in Darley. This funding will be provided for traffic, pedestrian and parking improvements as well as the replacement of the amenities building, play space improvements and ancillary works. An Albanese Labor Government will also fix aged care in Hawke by ensuring nurses are brought back on site 24/7 and bringing dignity back for older Australians with higher standards in residential care; we will provide cheaper childcare for 96 per cent of families, and we will secure more secure local jobs in Hawke. I welcome the $10 million investment from the Victorian Labor Government into the Bacchus Marsh pool. I’ll continue to work with Council, the Victorian Government and an Albanese Labor Government to advocate for our pool.”

lives in Darley (Hawke) “I’ve been long campaigning for the indoor swimming pool, so one of my priorities would be getting the remaining $15 million from the Federal Government. Widening the Western Freeway – that should have been duplicated a decade ago. Labor’s come out with a poor announcement of a business study … I want to commit money to the actual project, not just a study. The truck bypass in Bacchus Marsh is a huge priority too, plus ensuring no more toxic soil comes to the area. One of the things I’ll try to do is rip up the dodgy contract between Labor and AusNet, in regards to overhead transmission lines, and get them put underground. Bald Hill was my initiative while on Council, it was extremely hard to get that off the ground as no Councillors supported me on that. But I’ve lobbied the Federal and State Government and got a lot of traction on Bald Hill and gotten to the first stages. Naturally I’d love to see the project blossom, with lookouts, a playground, off-leash dog park, café if possible. We can turn this into a real flagship thing. I want to give people a reason to get off the road, stretch their legs, and spend some money locally. I’d love to put more money into it.”

If elected I would advocate for funding for all the projects Council has recently highlighted ($15 million for an indoor pool complex, $2.9 million for a regional bowls complex, $2 million for Stage 3 of the Bacchus Marsh 1000+ Steps, $6 million for sewering of Wallace and Bungaree, and $500,000 for female friendly changerooms for Dunnstown Reserve). We want a federal Integrity Commission too, it’s something that’s really needed and hasn’t been delivered. An Integrity Commission with consequences, an ICAC with teeth. On climate, we want to reach net zero emissions by 2030, the science has been pretty clear that any target beyond that, you’re just playing games at that point. But we want that in a way helps improve the area and bring local jobs. Talking to people in Moorabool, aged care has been a big issue. Aged care is desperately in need of more funding, resources, and training. A lot of people ask, ‘why are you [TNL] different’? At the end of the day we’re a progressive party, and a lot of our policies are similar to Labor and the Greens, but our economics make us different. Why is he insisting that we allow Aus Net towers and transmission lines to destroy this image? We live here for the lifestyle not to be destroyed by man-made towers. Dan Andrews and his fellow MPs can make this happen; we don’t oppose reducing carbon emissions and green energy, put them underground like residential subdivisions. Dear Editor, I could be mistaken but I believe there is a federal election in two weeks. This letter was written on 7 May. There is a new seat named Hawke (still no idea why we are in a seat named after someone with no connection to the area) that apparently has a number of candidates hoping to be elected. I am yet to hear from any of the hopefuls in my town of Ballan and certainly nothing in the local newspaper. Not sure what information is available in Melton or Bacchus Marsh though. Are we as voters meant to channel the policies of those hopefuls or are they actually going to let the voters know their so-called agenda? Mick Dunk Ballan Dear Editor, In the Moorabool News (10 May) Premier Dan Andrews said … “the money would help to deliver a world class facility for Moorabool families.” Obviously, Mr Andrews does not realise that Bacchus Marsh is tacked on to the eastern boundary of the shire and the facility will be of little benefit to the majority of the shire other than those that live in Bacchus Marsh and immediate surrounds. Our western and southwestern centres are devoid of public transport and an hour drive to Bacchus Marsh. The closest population centre Ballan, which was to remain the administrative and operational centre of shire

under the agreed formation of the Moorabool shire, is a half hour drive and longer by public transport with no connecting services. To the majority of the schools and sporting clubs (football Netball) outside of Bacchus Marsh such as Dunnstown, Bungaree, Springbank, Gordon, Mt Egerton, Ballan, Lal Lal, Glen Park, Clarks Hill, it will be of negligible use. This project further demonstrates the widening gap between the needs of the rural ratepayers of the shire and the needs of a rapidly growing urban centre like Bacchus Marsh and its geographic isolation and disconnection from the rest of the shire. It also effectively demonstrates the imbalance of rural representation on council with the dominance of east ward Bacchus Marsh councillors. The notion that the financial burden, of the enormous capital expense of building such a complex and the ongoing cost of maintaining it, be thrust on all the rate payers of the shire is hard to accept in any event; but more so when the complex is at the far end of the shire and would only be of use to the residents of Bacchus Marsh who themselves can travel 13 kilometres to the Melton Aquatic centre. Our rates are high enough, it is time we start living within in our means and tear up proposals such as this high cost capital burden. It may be time that Bacchus Marsh is excised from the shire and amalgamated with Melton where they share similar needs of a suburban environment. Tony Lynch Gordon

Confusion over interlock condition Mr Goldson believed he had been given a six-month interlock period in 2012 and kept the interlock on for twoyears but didn’t realise he had to apply to have the interlock removed.

By Lachlan Ellis A man has had his case adjourned, after admitting to driving without an interlock, being unaware he still needed one at the time.

Since having the interlock condition put on his licence, Goldson had sold the car after a mechanic removed the interlock.

Brett Goldson appeared in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on Friday 6 May, admitting to driving without an interlock.

Magistrate Radford suggested the mechanic must have provided printouts from the interlock, and that if those were provided and all showed a 0.00 BAC, Mr Goldson could come back at a later date to have the interlock condition removed.

The police prosecutor told Magistrate Hugh Radford on Tuesday 14 April, 2020, at 12.09 pm, the accused was driving a motor vehicle, a ute, eastbound on Old Melbourne Road in Gordon. “No other passengers were onboard. At the same time, police were travelling in a marked police vehicle in the same location travelling the opposite direction towards the accused,” he said. “Police detected the accused driving at 117 km/h using a mobile radar. He was intercepted and police offered the accused to view the reading. He produced his driver’s licence – his licence indicated he was subjected to an alcohol interlock condition, an inspection of the vehicle the accused

was driving revealed there was no interlock device fitted.” The court heard the interlock condition was placed on Mr Goldson’s licence on the 12th of August 2012, and that he admitted to speeding on 14 April 2020, but not at 117 km/h, rather, “somewhere between 105 and 110”. He also admitted to knowing about the interlock condition but “had never made an application to have the condition removed”.

Mr Goldson’s lawyer told the court his client seems to think “his mother may have them [the interlock printouts] at the house.” “Good old mum,” Magistrate Radford said. “It’s amazing what mums keep…I’ll just stand the matter down, it may be that we adjourn this until we’ve got a note back from VicRoads to say the interlock condition has been removed, or you bring the application back to the court,” he said. The matter was adjourned until 17 June.

Fingers crossed for indoor pool By Lachlan Ellis The State Budget and the federal election has seen a flurry of funding commitments for a range of Moorabool projects, and politicians visiting to splash some cash – but a Bacchus Marsh woman has shared just how important one particular project is for her and her family. Ruth Baas’ daughter, 16-year-old Ella, is a state level swimmer, and also works as a lifeguard. Because there’s currently no pool available in Bacchus Marsh for nine months of the year, Ms Baas says, Ella travels out of Moorabool three mornings a week at 4.30 am. “She’s been a competitive swimmer since she was 11 … we travel to Gisborne three mornings a week for her to train. In the last year or so she’s reached state level and has competed at some big state events that Swimming Victoria run, which requires her to get some pretty tough qualifying times,” Ms Baas told the Moorabool News. “Having a pool in town would be so much better. She’d still be required to go to train under her coach, but to have the option to do extra training in town without relying on her parents to get her to places would be fantastic.” Ms Baas said she was grateful for the State Government providing $10 million for the indoor pool, but was concerned the Federal Government may not chip in and get the facility fully funded, given how long Marshians have been waiting for an indoor pool already. “We’ve always had to travel to find a pool, and I know there’s a lot of people saying ‘we don’t need a pool, we need this, we need that’…but we’ve been here for over 20 years and we definitely need a new pool. The town’s gotten so much bigger,” she said. “The State Government funding announcement was exciting, but $10 million’s not going to get it built. Ella was excited that there might be a facility here in town, but we’re

assuming by the time it does finally get built, she won’t be interested in swimming anymore. The aim for Ella is nationals, her mother said. “But that all depends on being able to train more. We need the Federal Government to step up, we seem to be forgotten a bit out here.” Major party candidates for the new electorate of Hawke, which includes Bacchus Marsh, have stopped short of promising the required $15 million of Federal Government

funding for the pool if elected. Labor’s Sam Rae stated he is “very supportive of the Bacchus Marsh pool” and pledged to advocate for it, while the Liberal Party’s Enamul Haque did not respond to the Moorabool News for comment. The pool will form Stage 3 of the Moorabool Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC), which Council has committed close to $15 million to, alongside the State Government’s $10 million investment.

Autumn festival springs ahead

New track a walk in the park

The Mayor of Moorabool Shire has joined a local Friends Group and Parks Victoria to open a new all-abilities trail, with works ongoing to revegetate the area. The official opening ceremony for the Discovery Walk started at 10 am on Saturday 7 May, with Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan cutting a ribbon to officially open the circuit. Located in woodland at Meikles Point Picnic Ground, the Discovery Walk is an easy 400-metre circuit completed by the Friends of Werribee Gorge & Long Forest Mallee (FOWGLFM). Cr Sullivan joined Council’s Community Strengthening Liaison Advisor, Ashley Malloy, Parks Victoria representatives Ranger Team Leader Andrea Witty and Ranger Mike Frislie, members of the FOWGLFM and 30 guests in attending the opening.

Mayor Sullivan and Mr Frislie spoke at the launch along with FOWGLFM Secretary, Gordon Littlejohn, Co-Ordinator Kristy Reid, and Historian Bob Reid. Attendees walked the track, took in the interpretative signage and new seating, and examined the revegetation project, with volunteers then planting 200 indigenous trees, shrubs and grasses. Morning tea and a light lunch were provided for the attendees, with the event concluding at 3 pm. The seating around the Discovery Walk was designed and built by local builder Lincoln Powell. FOWGLFM have been revegetating the land, which is located on a plot of old farming land in the Werribee Gorge State Park, for many years, with the first planting beginning in 1984.

It is only five more sleeps until the themed Autumn Festival in Ballan begins. Anyone can dress up and ‘celebrate local superheros’ on the day, or as the 1st Ballan Scouts have done prior, decorated haybales to complement the theme. Volunteer organisers are expecting 10,000 visitors to the otherwise quiet township, with the festival the highlight of Ballan’s public calendar. President (BAF), Deryck Carruthers said the festival theme of “celebrating local superheroes” has ensured a jam-packed programme of events and activities. “In addition to an all-ages costume competition with prizes sponsored by Oz ComicCon, the festival has added a number of free workshops, on the superhero theme.

“To hone some of those superhero physical skills, Circus Lab will be teaching circus tricks and aspiring “mad scientists” can learn the basics of how to build machines with SciencePlay Kids,” he said. Local artist and animator Jonny Hall will be teaching the basics of comic character design with a ‘Create Your Own Superhero’ workshop. With the Ballan Autumn Festival running for the past 45 years and costing close to $40,000 per year for volunteers to raise and deliver, the changing theme offers something fresh and different. “We are super excited about this year’s superhero offering, and are really impressed at what it’s inspiring,” Mr Carruthers said. “It’s thrilling be able to offer local people so many fun and diverse activities on the superhero theme. We can’t get over just how excited people are for this year’s festival.”

In addition to the workshops, there’ll be the annual parade, rides, over a hundred stalls, street food, a petting zoo, a pet show, a high tea organized by the CWA and wandering superheroes organised by Moorabool Wind Farm. Why can’t Western Victoria’s proposed transmission line just go underground?

Communities and landholders provided feedback that underground construction should be considered for this project, and we have been investigating undergrounding as part of the Environment Effects Statement (EES). In response to community requests for information, we shared our preliminary findings at the end of last year.

While placing the cable underground may improve visual impact, there are restrictions on permitted activities within the easement. For example, no cropping is permitted within the 30 metre easement. Similarly, excavation beyond 300 millimetres is not typically permitted above underground cables, which may prevent certain farming activities.

Independent experts covered key areas of community interest with regard to environmental impacts, farming restrictions and the cost of undergrounding the transmission line versus overhead construction.

Then there’s the cost – while it isn’t everything, cost is a major consideration as Victoria’s electricity users will ultimately pay for this project. The investigation found undergrounding the project would cost approximately 16 times more than overhead construction.

It was found that underground construction has less visual and landscape impact compared to overhead except where above ground facilities and easements through vegetation are required. Experts also found that underground construction requires digging 1.5 to 2 metre deep open trenches along the length of the project, requiring the removal of trees and vegetation within a 30 metre wide easement causing significant ground disturbance. By comparison overhead construction results in less disturbance to agriculture, flora, fauna and Aboriginal cultural heritage. Overhead transmission lines have a smaller construction and operational footprint and can span over sensitive areas such as flora and fauna. Another key consideration is restricted farming operations along the proposed route.

The Ballan Autumn Festival (BAF) has been sorely missed with cancellations in 2020, 2021, and Autumn 2022 – but the Festival will be making a spectacular return, this time in spring. The BAF Committee has announced that BAF will return on November 26 this year, with Ballan’s last Autumn Festival held all the way back in March 2019. Kevin Harper is Acting President of the BAF Committee, after former President Deryck Carruthers stepped down in April. He said this year’s BAF was still a work in progress, but it would be exciting to have one again after a long hiatus. “The Autumn Festival won’t be the superherothemed event that it was planned to be, that’s still to be decided as to whether that’s going to happen next autumn…but there will be a Festival next autumn as well,” Mr Harper told the Moorabool News. “Safety is paramount, and BAF has always been the largest event in town, bringing 10,000 people into the town. So we’ve had to work around an event that’s COVID-safe and sustainable. It’s not just the Committee that’s been disappointed with the festivals being cancelled, but the whole town...so I think there’s general excitement that something will be happening again.” Mr Harper also thanked Deryck Carruthers for his hard work and commitment as President of the BAF Committee. “On behalf of the Committee, I’d like to thank

We’re continuing to investigate partial undergrounding as part of the EES process, but we’ve shared the preliminary findings because we know it is important to local landholders, communities and stakeholders. Victoria Police have noticed an increase in reckless driving during the COVID-19 pandemic, and are forming a reference group to get community input on anti-hooning plans. The ‘Hooning Community Reference Group’ will be another tool in Victoria Police’s arsenal, complementing Victoria’s anti-hoon legislation, which is among the country’s toughest – including on-the-spot licence suspensions for excessive speeding, and powers to impound and permanently confiscate vehicles driven in a reckless manner. The reference group will bring together members of the community and stakeholders with road safety experts across law enforcement, government, and research groups, to work together on a new ‘Victorian Hoon Driving Action Plan’. Among the main focuses of the group will be short, medium and long-term plans to boost education, early intervention, and

Raising awareness of Disability Royal Commission By Lachlan Ellis You might not be aware there’s a Disability Royal Commission going on right now, or what exactly the Commission is looking into – but free sessions running locally this month can help fill you in. Hosted by Grampians disAbility Advocacy (GdA), two community information sessions will be held in Daylesford on May 24, and in Bacchus Marsh on May 26. The sessions will run attendees through the ongoing ‘Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability’, and GdA hopes to see many people from the disabled community submit their experiences to the Commission. GdA Advocate Sherree Unwin, who is coordinating the information sessions, said the ideal outcome for the Commission would be “significant reform”. “People with disabilities are still excluded from places they should not be excluded from. They are still employed with a sub-par wage, taught in schools that don’t allow for different learning. We need to treat people with disabilities better, we need to use a human rights model,” Ms Unwin told the Moorabool News. “We would love for people to come and enjoy an afternoon tea and have a chat with us, learn about how we can potentially help them, and learn how they can tell their story safely, if that’s what they decide.” The sessions have been planned in response to a lack of awareness around the Disability

Royal Commission, and will feature five speakers: Ms Unwin, GdA’s Indigenous advocate, Michelle Bowler from Your Story Legal Support, Jo Sullivan from Blue Knot, and Mohamed Mustafa from the Disability Royal Commission. “We want to hear from people who have experienced mistreatment in the past, but also from those who have been well supported – the Commission is open to recommendations as well as stories about mistreatment,” Ms Unwin said. “We would love to hear more stories from people with disabilities, people who work in the disability system, people who support people with disabilities and people who have witnessed something. The Commission has incredibly broad subject and no one is limited.” The sessions will also provide an overview of the services offered by GdA, though the focus will be on the Disability Royal Commission. The Bacchus Marsh session will be held at the Bacchus Marsh Public Hall on Thursday May 26 from 2–4 pm, while the Daylesford session will be held in the Paddock Room at Daylesford Neighbourhood House on Tuesday May 24 from 2–4 pm. Council budget out for comment

Council’s latest budget and a review of the Council Plan will go out to the public for community consultation, after Council unanimously voted to put them on exhibition at an ‘unscheduled Meeting of Council’ last week. While the two recommendations to consider the Proposed Budget and Council Plan passed quickly, Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan and Cr Rod Ward took a moment to thank Council staff for their work behind the scenes in preparing the documents. “Thank you very much Councillors, and thank you Officers for preparation of all that documentation. It might have seemed like it went through in a few minutes, but I know there’s a lot of work that went on in the background,” Cr Sullivan said. “I want to commend the staff on putting together the update, it’s a fantastic document and very informative for Councillors and residents of Moorabool Shire,” Cr Ward added. Both voted in favour of the two motions, as did Crs Tonia Dudzik and Moira Berry – a unanimous vote from Councillors present. Crs David Edwards and Ally Munari were apologies at the meeting, while Cr Paul Tatchell was unable to connect to the meeting via livestream, due to technical issues. Another rescue in gorge

By Lachlan Ellis SES volunteers and Victoria Police have completed at least the third rescue this year at Lerderderg Gorge, with a call issued for hikers to ensure they are well prepared and informed before they begin their walk. Emergency services were notified at around 6:45 pm on Sunday 8 May that two hikers had become lost, after wandering off marked tracks in the dark. Deputy Controller of Assets and Facilities at the Bacchus Marsh SES Unit, Keith Muller, said hikers often “greatly underestimate the degree of difficulty of the walks”. “We were called to an "Assist Police RE Lost Hiker" in the Lerderderg Gorge and met up with VicPol at Mackenzies Flat picnic area at 6.50 pm. There were two people lost and their location not certain, but we were expecting them to be close to Emergency Marker LER504. Three members walked in to the marker at which the walking track ends, then walked upstream criss-crossing the river for approximately 1.5 kilometres. At this point it was decided to call it off at 10.30 pm as the risk was becoming too great,” Mr Muller told the Moorabool News. “VicPol AirWing were then called to determine the location of the lost persons in relation to our position, and it turned out we were within 200 metres of them.

Airwing thought winching much too great a risk for them considering our position, so we continued to meet up with the two lost persons. It was then a two-hour walk out back to the picnic area reaching this at 1 am.” Mr Muller said there have been “at least three to four rescues” in the Lerderderg Gorge this year, “and about the same in the Werribee Gorge”, with “close to 15 total rescues over a 12-month period”. But these can be avoided, he said, if hikers make sure they’re fully prepared before venturing out onto a new track. “Hikers need to research the walks better using Australian web sites – the last two rescues, hikers were using American hiking trails apps. They need to read the Parks Vic signs rather than a glance, have quality maps or apps, be better prepared with a backpack with plenty of water, snacks, food, torch, basic first aid including snake bandages, a power bank to charge phones, spare clothing, et cetera,” Mr Muller said. “Let someone know and set expected times for returning, take note of the Emergency Markers as you go, and most importantly: if it looks wrong, it probably is.” The two hikers were thankfully uninjured, with the SES’ main concern being the chilly night they were hiking in, especially given the hikers’ light clothing and lack of supplies.

Free family violence network to open A new Orange Door is opening just on the outskirts of Moorabool, providing support for more women, children, and families experiencing family violence. Complementing the Central Highlands Orange Door Network which opened in Ballarat in 2020, Brimbank Melton will offer support by phone and email, face-toface in Melton and Sunshine, and through outposted and outreach services across the region. The free service will assist adults, children and young people who are experiencing or have experienced family violence, and families needing support with the wellbeing and development of their children. Minister for Prevention of Family Violence, Gabrielle Williams, said the State Government was committed to making support available to all Victorians. “When experiencing family violence, reaching out for help may be the hardest thing a person will do. We are making sure that accessing advice and support is as easy as possible, no matter where you live,” Ms Williams said. “The Orange Door in Brimbank Melton will offer a streamlined way for women, children, young people and families to get the help they need in a secure and compassionate environment.”

“The Orange Door means, for the first time, local families will be able to access coordinated family violence, child and family wellbeing services and support – in Melton,” Member for Melton Steve McGhie added. The Orange Door Network was a key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Family Violence, and has assisted more than 216,000 people across Victoria, including more than 87,000 children, since it commenced in 2018. It brings together workers from specialist family violence, men’s, Aboriginal and child and family services, to provide coordinated, multi-disciplinary support, including crisis assistance and support, risk assessments, safety planning and wellbeing support. Brimbank Melton is a collaboration between five local service partners: GenWest, Western Health, Victorian Aboriginal Child Care Services, Victorian Aboriginal Community Services Association and MacKillop Family Services, in partnership with the State Government. Fundraising continues for a striking new monument to honour Bacchus Marsh’s veterans, including a High Tea to be held this month. The Resting Poppy Memorial Project was established nearly three years ago, to find a way to fittingly honour Bacchus Marsh’s 462 WWI soldiers, many of whom are not memorialised in the Avenue of Honour.

Editor and owner Helen Tatchell would like to thank the community for their 18 years of support.

When fully funded, a “vibrant, monolithic, abstract bronze and plaque installation” will be built, with name plaques of those 462 diggers who served within the local community. Secretary of the Bacchus Marsh RSL, Carl Wright, told the Moorabool News that the Resting Poppy would be a fantastic way to recognise the sacrifices made by the area’s veterans. “World War I is but one story we have to tell. Veterans of subsequent wars are feeling, more keenly since the pandemic began, that they need recognition. For this reason, the project has expanded to include veterans of subsequent wars,” Mr Wright said. “We are passionate about remembering and ensuring current and future populations remember those that served, not only in World War I but in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq, to name but a few.”

At the time of writing, the Bacchus Marsh RSL has raised $61,000 for the Resting Poppy Memorial Project, and has also applied for a $300,000 grant from Creative Arts Victoria, with a decision due in late February.

Major injury avoided

By Lachlan Ellis A driver and nearby residents have been “incredibly lucky” to avoid major injury or death, following a serious truck crash in Buninyong recently. A B-double truck collided with a tree and parked vehicles at the Learmonth St (Midland Highway) and Warrenheip St roundabout near the centre of Buninyong on Friday 6 May, thankfully no-one suffered major injuries. Police, Ambulance, CFA, Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV) and SES all attended the scene, with police reporting only one injury. A police spokesperson told the Moorabool News it is believed a truck travelling westbound along Midland Highway collided with a car near the intersection of Warrenheip Road around 2.40pm. “The truck continued along the road and crashed into a tree and two stationary vehicles in a worksite, before coming to a rest on a nature strip,” the spokesperson said. “The truck driver, who was not seriously injured, stopped at the scene and is assisting police with their enquiries. The female driver and sole occupant of the car was taken to hospital with what are believed to be minor injuries. Nobody else was injured in the incident.” The circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined, and police are investigating. Buninyong-Mt Helen firefighter Matthew O’Brian said he was at work when he heard the collision, and knew straight away he’d need to help. “I heard the accident happen at work, which wasn’t far from the incident. I knew as soon as I heard something bad had happened, and saw a lot of people running towards where it

had been near the pub, I knew the best thing I could do was make my way to the fire station and crew the fire truck,” Mr O’Brian said. “Our main priority is to ensure people aren’t hurt, so when we first arrived we helped triage the area, and made sure the vehicles involved were safe – for example, if they needed their batteries isolated. We were on standby in case there was a fire involved. “It ended up being quite a big multi-agency event, we had SES, FRV, ambulance and police. FRV helped us with keeping the scene safe, and mitigating any diesel spills. It was very lucky [that there were no major injuries]. It could’ve been worse, but thankfully there were only minor injuries.” Member for Western Victoria and Shadow Assistant Minister for Government Scrutiny, Bev McArthur, said lives could easily have been lost in the accident, and a heavy vehicle bypass for Buninyong was desperately needed. “This Government is so focused on multi-billion dollar citycentric projects and their massive blowouts, that it barely has time, and certainly no care, for the country. It has come to this: will it take a death at this busy roundabout for anyone in the Victorian Government to do something?” Mrs McArthur said. The Department of Transport said it was aware of the incident, and was looking into ways to improve road safety in Buninyong. “We are currently exploring a number of options to address safety concerns around Buninyong – particularly those involving heavy vehicles. We will continue working with the City of Ballarat, Victoria Police and the Buninyong & District Community Association on a range of potential safety upgrades,” a Department of Transport spokesperson said.

Support for regional business Though JobKeeper ended in March, support still remains for eligible regional businesses, through the Regional Jobs Fund (RJF). A State Government program, the RJF provides financial support for a range of industries where regional competitive advantage exists, such as food and fibre, advanced manufacturing, and transport technology. The focus of the program is mainly to assist businesses who wish to expand and develop their operations in regional Victoria, and attract new investment and jobs. In some cases, the RJF can help businesses retain jobs in regional Victoria too. Applications will be considered from private sector businesses and business/ industry groups. Applications involving infrastructure needed to deliver

investment and jobs may be considered from utility and service providers, water corporations, Local Government Authorities, and incorporated notfor-profit organisations operating businesses. Individuals are not eligible to apply for the RJF. Projects with a grant amount of $1 million or more are required

Footy record goes digital

By Lachlan Ellis The old-fashioned footy record has moved online in the Central Highlands Football League (CHFL), as part of a drive to “appeal to a wider audience”. The move may take some time for traditionalists to get around – with some clubs rumoured to be considering their own paper footy records for supporters – but CHFL President Doug Hobson said it was a necessary change. “We have been trying to get the clubs, if they’re able to, to get team lists out, because we do realise there will be the odd person that doesn’t have a smartphone and can’t use the app. But we haven’t done away with the program, we’ve just changed the format,” Mr Hobson told the Moorabool News. “The decision was made late 2020, early 2021. Last year with the 12 rounds of seniors and 15 rounds of juniors, we had a digital program as well. We talked to the clubs for a while beforehand, and said we were looking to do that. As a board, we decided that was the way to go.” Footy records have been made available on the free ‘GameFace Record’ app, which is available on Android and iOS, and also provides quarter-by-quarter score updates. Mr Hobson said the move to digital-only was partly about expanding footy records to a wider audience, and partly for financial reasons. “We had a weekly thing sent out to each club they could print off to give to people that didn’t have a program, but that wasn’t widely taken up by the clubs. We do understand there are some people disgruntled that we haven’t got the old paper-based programs,” he said. “But realistically, we were only getting 50 of those tops to people at that gate. We’ve got five grades of football, so that’s only 10 programs per grade. So there wasn’t a huge uptake for starters. The financial aspect had a part to play in the decision, but it was about getting out to a wider audience too. “It has become very expensive to print programs, especially when we only do small runs of them. But the feedback has been fairly positive overall…we’ve had some complaints from ex-Presidents and other people, but we can’t reverse that. We’re trying to be frugal after two years without finals… the only income we have is sponsors, we’re very thankful for those groups that support us.” Though the last two years have been tough for the League financially, there is optimism that this year will finally see the return of a full football and netball season.

The BFL footy record will remain in print, whereas the CHFL have taken to an online option. Ballarat Football Netball League (BFNL) General Manage Shane Anwyl told the Moorabool News they still have a printed football record for the 2022 season. “We have a separate one for the Seniors and Juniors however, the BFL Women’s has an online footy record,” he said. Mr Anwyl said the BFL have explored the option of an online football record but there is still a desire for the printed version. “Down the track if there is an online option, the only way to do it is if it is interactive rather than just a PDF version. “Whilst there is still that desire, we shall continue in our current format,” Mr Anwyl concluded.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics Myrniong Recreation Reserve was the venue for Week 3 of Cross Country competition. A blustery, cool morning made it tough running. Athletes battled through the challenging conditions while some runners definitely took advantage of the tail winds to the finish line. The Under 11 and 12 athletes were first up this week as they tackled 2 laps of a 1km course. Lachlan Simons (Bacchus Marsh) established an early lead from the onset and didn’t look back, as he recorded a dominating performance, recording his first win for the season. Austin Shea (BM) produced her best Cross Country run to date, showing much improvement, to cross the finish line 2nd overall, 1st girl. Melton athletes Rajkamal singh Virk, Chord Wilson and Alexis Karmiste all recorded Personal Best results. The Under 6 athletes were next to toe the line, taking on the 500m loop of the reserve. Once again, Hendrix Wake (BM) took line honours while Melton’s McKinley Wilson closely followed in 2nd place with Hayden Tung (BM) just pipping Bowie Clarke (BM) on the line, to claim 3rd place. The Under 9/10 athletes competed over 1.5kms. Much improved athlete Joshua Askew produced his best performance, leading from start to finish, stopping the clock in a time of 6:30.95 mins. James White (BM) and Mackenzie Delaney (BM) both recorded their best times for this season. A small field of Open Age athletes competed over 3kms. It was great to see Elise Cook back running injury free and producing an outstanding run, crossing the finish in 1st place. Also, pleasing was to see the return of Emma Stewart to Cross Country in her first run for the season while Hashmeet Kaur (Melton) also competed in her first official run the season. In the final run for the morning, the Under 7 and 8 athletes lined up for their 1km event. This group of

keen and enthusiastic athletes were a little toey and after a second attempt, where off to a flying start. Melton’s Fletcher Reid remains undefeated after recording another convincing win in a PB time of 4:28.86 mins. Tait Ash (BM) was next home while Ballarat’s Archer Morris crossed the finish line in 3rd place. Melton athletes Zorawar Singh, Seerat Aulakh, Divgeet Kaur Mann all recorded PBs as did Bacchus Marsh athletes Cody Medcraft, Charlotte Delaney and Emma Foley. Next week - Cross Country meet will be held at Lake Dewar. This is a great opportunity for our athletes to tackle the course which the Region and State events will be held at.

Devils pinch third win

The Devils booted six unanswered goals midway through the second half to reel in a 20 point Sunbury Lions lead and hang on to win a thriller. The result was considered an eight point game for these two sides, eyeing off a slim chance of creeping into the final six at the business end. While Darley pinch their third win under new Coach Dan Jordan, it’s back to the drawing board for Travis Hodgson’s Sunbury who are languishing at 0-4 at the bottom of the table. Devils midfielder Brett Bewley was in a class of his own and undeniably the most influential player on the ground. Chatting to Hodgson in the aftermath, he went on the record saying “Bewley was the difference.” Sunbury had every reason to be confident heading in, buoyed by the inclusions of three VFL affiliated players in Cooper Anderson (Essendon), Jake Sutton (Essendon) and Mitch Lewis (Port Melbourne). Anderson (2 goals) threatened to take the game away from Darley with his vertical leap forward but could only cling to a handful of marks from double figure attempts. Sutton was the most dangerous forward on the ground but his ‘high’ natured accumulation saw him too far from goal to impact the scoreboard. Lewis was handy on a wing first up off a four week hamstring. For the winners Shane Page was terrific and youngsters Mitch Ward and Ayden Tanner important. Nick Rodda’s task was made difficult with errant supply for the most part before finishing with two goals including five shots ‘on’ in the last quarter. Dylan Landt (Essendon VFL affiliate) had his first hit out in Darley colours against his old club and was instrumental with 30 odd disposals, 95% of them by foot. There’s plenty to like about band-aid swingman Trent Angwin who led an inexperienced Devils defence with some telling grabs and important metres gained out of defence with his raking left foot - often from the last line to centre wing on a handful of occasions. Andy Azzopardi had his moments in the game and looks a better player in his third season at the level. Jake Ancrum is enjoying the ‘role’ asked of him in varying positions under his new coach. Luther Baker was good tempering the influence of Daniel Toman who missed the Lions ‘best players’ for the first time in 2022. On the whole, a morale boosting win for the Devils who were without a win at home from their last seven attempts dating back to August 2019. Redan await the improving Devils in Ballarat on Saturday in another test of the clubs sparked resilience. Backing up solid performances week in, week out will remain the Devils greatest challenge given the age profile of the group. WHAT THE COACHES SAID Where was the game was won and lost? JORDAN (Darley) - I thought we were better for longer today. HODGSON (Sunbury) - Brett Bewley had a bit to do with it. Rate your ‘forwards’ performance JORDAN - Nick Rodda responded well in the last quarter with 5 shots on goal (converted two) to get it done when it counted most. HODGSON - Presented really well but didn’t convert our opportunities. Rate your ‘midfielders’ performance JORDAN - Pretty even. Brett Bewley and Page were important for us. HODGSON - Aside from our inability to contain (Brett) Bewley, we were pretty good. Rate your ‘defenders’ performance JORDAN - No Matty Brett, Darren Leonard - our back six were young and inexperienced but were solid and responded when challenged. Ward, Ancrum, Angwin good. HODGSON - Well led by Scanlon (on Rodda) and Lever was very honest. Kept Darley to 3 goals for 2.5 quarters - gave us every chance. Gaths’ catch a good wave

By Michael Howard (HRV) Well-earned rests await Catch A Wave and Just Hope after the pair produced barnstorming all-the-way performances to dominate the APG Vic Gold Bullion finals for three-year-olds at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night. Connections of both said a tilt at Queensland’s lucrative winter carnivals were unlikely for their star pacers, who instead look set to be freshened for Victoria’s rich spring. Few carry more hype than Andy Gath and Kate Gath’s Catch A Wave and he did no harm to his reputation, recording a ninth win from 10 starts off extraordinary first and third quarters. The Breeders Crown winner added a second Group 1 by twice pouring on the pressure in 27-second quarters to register a five-metre win ahead of impressive District Attorney despite a comparatively modest run to the line. “It was good to get the win,” Kate Gath told TrotsVision. “He got a bit keen. We’ve got blocks on him to make sure that he behaves himself at the start, which he’s now doing, so we’ll probably hopefully be able to get those off and I think he will be a lot more relaxed (in the run).” The start was certainly no problem with Catch A Wave rocketing off the gate to lead easily. Despite being unchallenged he reeled off the quickest first 200 metres of any horse on the night, covering it in 12.57 seconds, while only Love Ina Chevy in the TAB Young Pedro Free For All had a quicker first 100 metres, with his 6.23 seconds narrowly shading Catch A Wave (6.24). He raced friskly through a 27.4-second first quarter, balanced up with a 29.2 second and then broke the pack open in the third quarter (27.9 seconds). Ballan Brumbies Basketball With injuries and a virus wreaking havoc on playing lists, a depleted Ballan Brumbies took to the floor over the weekend, including the Under 12 girls who took on Saints Dream. This was a ‘styles makes fights’ match up. Ballan’s pacy and skillful mosquito fleet against the raw size of a huge Saints lineup. Brumbies got things moving through an Ailah McFall jump shot before Annabelle Chalmers answered for Saints. Brumbies were struggling to contain Saints around the basket, the team continually lobbing up passes for tall timber in Evie Morgan and Sadie Baker, the latter making Ballan pay with a pair of baskets. When the Brumbies were able to get their hands on the ball, their superior speed saw them get out on the break, McFall and Clara Monterosso hitting shots to keep the game close. A lovely moment for the team came late in the first half as the younger Monterosso sister, Grace, connected on her first career basket. A late Dakota Mulgrew jump shot saw Ballan hold a narrow 14-12 lead at the break. After half time, McFall went on a tear, hitting six quick points - she would finish with a game high 16 - to push Ballan’s lead out to eight before Saints rebounding edge saw them start to convert 2nd and 3rd chance opportunities. McFall started to tire midway through the half as Saints guard Annabelle Chalmers started to take control of the game. Fortunately for Ballan, others stepped up. Brandi Mulgrew picked up a pair of steals and an Esther Seketa shot was rebounded and converted by Clara Monterosso as the Brumbies kept pace with Saints. McFall found her second wind, coming through with multiple key defensive plays and a pair of late baskets to put Ballan up 28-24 with just over a minute remaining. A Hannah Williams basket saw Saints pull within two points but the Brumbies were able to hang on for a hard fought 28-26 win. Cobras sink teeth into Lions By Todd Whelan Bacchus Marsh set up a crucial 10 point win on the road against Redan with a seven goals to two opening half. The 32 point advantage proved a bridge too far for Jarret Giampaolo’s men who fell short for the second week in a row on their home deck. Harry King was named best for the winners along with former Henderson Medalist Daniel Burton. Off season arrivals Michael Culliver, Jack Williams and Rex Hickman are stringing together an important stretch of good form with each having an impact in all three Cobra wins in 2022. Jake Owen (2 goals) remains the number one assignment for opposition clubs to contain. The popular leader’s contribution was significant in yet another tight finish. Cobras star mid Nick Stuhldrier and forward Aaron Willetts did not play. While Redan midfield gun Lachie George (3 goals) was important, they clearly missed the drive and distribution of Cooper Craig-Peters. The Redan Lions are clearly a different proposition with him in it. The club, while wanting only the best for him, will sweat on the Footscray VFL affiliate’s availability ahead of their round six clash with Darley, a Lions third home game in a row. Notable sharpshooter Isaac Grant was named among the better players despite a goalless return, while Cooper Atchison and Declan Phillips run of good form continues. While the scoreboard tells a story of a Lions charge in the second half, the Cobras did themselves little favours with an inaccurate 2.8 but had done enough when it countered to secure the Premiership points. The Cobras (6th) are well placed with three wins from their opening four encounters with a game in hand on Melton (1st), North Ballarat (2nd), Ballarat (4th) and Darley (5th), all of whom sit above them. This Saturday, all eyes will focus towards the Cobras meeting with an improving Melton South at Maddingley Park in Apple 98.5FM’s Match of the Round - LIVE from 2pm. WHAT THE COACHES SAID Where was the game was won and lost? GERMAN (B/Marsh) - Good contest throughout the day in windy conditions. We played really well in the first half and proved the difference. good rebound - a pleasing effort considering we threw the magnets around and trialled a few things. GIAMPAOLO (Redan) - Another inconsistent performance. Our first quarter was very bad. We coughed the ball up out of defence. We weren’t able to use the ball how we wanted, couldn’t find a team-mate and turned it over. We had a few early chances at goal but didn’t convert stalling any momentum. The second half was a different story. Our efficiency improved and the game was played more in our forward half. On the back of our improving pressure, we finally started to hit the scoreboard. To be able to put ourselves in a winning position was pleasing and shows our best is definitely good enough but at the moment we’re too inconsistent. If we can string four quarters together, we will win plenty of games. That remains our greatest challenge.
