By Jane Gardner There’s excitement brewing in and around Moorabool’s live music scene. The second of The Stage is Yours (Central Highlands) events is all set to go at St Anne’s Winery in Myrniong on Sunday 10 April.

The aptly named, ‘Vibes in the Vines’ will showcase a fabulous line-up of local, talented musicians, including solo artists and bands, performing across three stages. Several music workshops will also be on offer (included in the ticket price) held in amongst the barrels in the winery’s beautiful rooms.

Visitors can meander their way around the different stages and workshops, listening to a wide variety of music genres: blues, folk, funk, Irish, originals and covers from the 1950’s

through to today. Artists include, Andrew Borg, Breckin, Five O’clock Charlie, Heartbeat, The Darlings Family Trust, Marty Luke & Bec Peel, Rock ‘n Co, Salty Dog, Scott McCallum, Sharyn Jury & the Mellow Men, The Old Married Couple, Trunk and Wicked Grin.

The free workshops offer participants opportunity to learn more about Cigar Box Guitars (with ‘Salty Dog’, Steve Plater) Vocal Improv (with ‘Breckin’s’, Hetty McMarsh) Ukulele (with Gordon Ukestra’s, Tony Warby) and a Guitar Seminar (with ‘Hooked on Music’s’, Andrew Borg).

The Vibes in the Vines event is a wonderful opportunity for local musicians to get back into the (ahem) swing of things, as well as a chance for the community to get out and visit a beautiful local venue, enjoy great food and wine and listen to some excellent music.

‘Given’ out defibs

By Lachlan Ellis A local primary school has expressed its gratitude, after being donated a life-saving device worth thousands of dollars.

Mount Egerton Primary School was gifted a defibrillator by John Given, and Principal Tegan Bell said it was a vital piece of equipment not just for the safety of students, but the Mount Egerton community as a whole.

“Having a defib really increases the chain of survival, it’s such a good thing to have at our school, and in the community in general.

If something happens in the community, it’s available for them to come and use as well,” she told the Moorabool News.

“Being such a small school, we might only have two staff here at one time. Without a defib, you’d have one staff member herding the students away from the traumatic situation, while one staff member would be calling Triple Zero, on the phone while administering CPR. I don’t know how long it would take an ambulance to get out here… and with CPR, you only have a short time where you’re effectively administering it.”

Ms Bell said Mr Given’s donation had come as a complete surprise.

“I got a phone call out of the blue last year during lockdown. Mr Given rang and asked if we had a defib…I said no we don’t, and he wanted to donate one to our school. He’d actually made a few donations previously to

other schools,” she said.

“They’re not cheap, it makes it really hard for small schools like ours to make the purchase.

They’re a few thousand dollars. John’s also donated another battery for the defib too.”

Mr Given has also donated defibrillators to Primary Schools in Myrniong, Sassafras, and Ferny Creek, and money for a defibrillator for Gordon Primary is currently being processed.

The Moorabool resident was humble about his good deeds, which he said were done through a not-for-profit foundation called ‘Defib For Life’, which educates schools about cardiac arrest and the importance of public access defibrillators.

“All I do is give Sue Buckman [Defib For Life co-founder] the money, and she does the organising and supplying,” Mr Given said.

“On Wednesday I put a bank cheque in Sue’s letterbox. When it clears, she will begin organising a defibrillator for Gordon Primary School.”

Quick assistance is vital in ensuring someone in cardiac arrest survives – for every minute someone in cardiac arrest is not successfully treated (such as through defibrillation), the chance of survival decreases by 7 per cent per minute in the first 3 minutes, and then by 10 per cent per minute beyond 3 minutes.

Hockeyroo potential

By Lachlan Ellis She’s played for Victoria and made the Under 21 squad, and now a Moorabool hockey star is just one step away from national selection.

Darley’s Zali Ward was named as one of just 23 members of the Women’s National Development Squad (NDS), which, in Hockey Australia’s own words, “is an integral stepping stone in the pathway program, and comprises athletes identified as being on the fringe and available for Hockeyroos selection”.

Ms Ward was notified of her selection by email on Monday 21 March, and said she was in disbelief when she read her name in the list of players.

“I couldn’t believe it. I got the email and thought, I’ll open it up, I can’t wait to see who’s in it. But then I saw my name, it was so unexpected, I was just over the moon, I couldn’t believe it,” she told the Moorabool News.

She’s come far since her first hockey match – a fill-in game in the Under 10s where she “had no idea what I was doing except running around the grass field” – and admits she “hated hockey at first” after switching from netball to hockey when she was 11.

“There were so many rules, it was confusing…but I came to love it, the freedom, the ability to always improve on your skills. You could run anywhere, that’s what I liked,” she said.

“I decided I wanted to improve and develop as a hockey player, so I moved into the city to play at Essendon. I still play there for the club. I started to sign up for regional and state squads, I didn’t think I’d make it, but I had a crack. I enjoy the team environment.

“It’s all happened quickly…I got a scholarship to the VIS (Victorian Institute of Sport) the end of last year, and during COVID we were privileged enough to continue training and improving our fitness, to hopefully be recognised after COVID.” Ms Ward embraced the opportunity to take part in a Jillaroos camp on the Gold Coast just a week before the NDS announcement was made, and clearly impressed selectors.

“I was super grateful and took the opportunity with both hands. I learnt a lot about tactics, game awareness, and wellbeing, even off-field things that help you play the best. From that, they chose an Under 21 Jillaroos squad. I didn’t realise they chose a development squad too; I didn’t think it was on the cards for me,” Ms Ward said.

“I’m still in disbelief.”

Hockeyroos Head Coach, Katrina Powell, said the NDS selection process had shown the depth of women’s hockey in Australia, and players on the NDS had a strong chance of being selected to put on the green and gold.

“There is a really good mix of athletes with different levels of experience and capability, and also ones where we needed the support of the National Institute Network to realise they were out there,” Ms Powell said.

“I’ve got no doubt there will be times we need to select from outside the 22 players in the Hockeyroos squad and we want to make sure the 23 players in the National Development Squad are ready to go when needed … with our talented juniors coming through we also have a glimpse of the future, with an eye on the Paris Olympics in 2024.”

Alleged home invader to face trial

By Lachlan Ellis An alleged home invader will face a 7-day trial in April, with witnesses cross-examined at a hearing last week.

Kalem George appeared via livestream at a committal hearing at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday 24 March, facing 44 charges including trespass, unlawful assault, and assault with a weapon.

In January, Mr George and a co-accused, Tama Flavell, were remanded to the Melbourne Magistrates Court, after allegedly threatening a man with a knife before entering a home on Parkside Drive, Hopetoun Park at around 8.15 am on Tuesday, 12 October 2021.

Police also allege one of the men struck the 40-year-old occupant of the home with an object before fleeing. The two offenders then left the scene, one in a white Toyota 4WD they arrived in and the other in a gold Toyota 4WD belonging to the victim.

At the 24 March hearing, six witnesses were heard: five

civilian witnesses, and the informant, Senior Constable Kristina Pellegrino.

Mr George’s lawyer, Andrew Jackson, drew attention to the fact that many of the witnesses could not clearly identify Mr George or Mr Flavell as the offenders.

Each civilian witness was asked by Mr Jackson whether police had shown them photographs to try and identify the offenders – all answered no.

However, the first witness, Charlie Sammut, identified the two men that entered his home on 12 October as “a skinny guy with white skin”, and the second “darker-skinned with a blue top on”.

Witness Sam Justus, who said he was threatened by a man with a knife on the morning of the offending, said that he could not fully describe the driver or passenger of the vehicle he saw, as both were wearing masks, but said the passenger was “male, Caucasian, skinny, in his 20s, wearing a white mask on his face”.

The final witness, Senior Constable Kristina Pellegrino, said the investigation was “complete with the exception of DNA exhibits being examined, but the investigation in terms of criminal charges is complete”.

Mr Jackson asked if “A number of swabs were taken? And a number of items were put forward for DNA analysis?”

“Yes, I did have a conversation with our forensic unit requesting those be examined. The conversation I had at the time, due to us not having a sample from either of the co-accused to compare to those DNA exhibits, they weren’t going to be analysed at the time,” Senior Constable Kristina Pellegrino.

Magistrate Frances Medina said she was satisfied there was enough evidence for a trial.

“Having heard the evidence and having regard to the exhibits and the hand-up brief, I’m of the view that there’s sufficient weight of evidence to support a conviction for the offences with which you are charged,” the Magistrate said.

Mr George entered a plea of not guilty to the charges and was committed to stand trial at the County Court on 13 April, with an estimate of seven days duration.

Mr Flavell had his case adjourned to April 26, with his lawyer, Sai Ranjit, granted the adjournment to “obtain psychiatric records and other material for a summary jurisdiction application”.

Shut the gate on farm crime

Recently released crime figures have shown a jump in farm crime in Victoria, prompting a new campaign from Crime Stoppers Victoria.

The ‘Shut Out Farm Crime’ campaign was launched on Tuesday March 22, with Crime Stoppers urging farmers across Victoria to upgrade or install security on their properties.

Data released by the Crime Statistics Agency this month shows a 12.6 per cent rise in livestock theft in the 12 months to December 2021, which cost hard-working farmers over $2.7 million.

Diesel theft has also jumped, seeing a 20 per cent rise in value of fuel stolen.

Crime Stoppers Victoria CEO Stella Smith urged victims of farm crime to contact authorities, and help ensure criminals don’t get away with it.

“Not speaking up allows criminals to get away with offending and it affects farmers economically.

If they don’t have money to spend in the local community, that impacts local traders as well,” Ms Smith said.

“Farmers do an amazing job. They cope with floods, drought, and all sorts of other things. They shouldn’t have to put up with thieves as well. When you come to Crime Stoppers, you control how much information you give us. You decide whether you want to say who you are, you decide how much information you share.”

Inspector Karl Curran from Victoria Police’s Farm Crime Coordination Unit said rising crime figures in the farming and rural sectors was concerning, but also reflected an increase in reporting of farm crime.

“These [Crime Stoppers] campaigns have highlighted the historical underreporting issues we have within the sector. We are encouraged there appears to be more confidence in reporting farm crime to Victoria Police,” Inspector Curran said.

“The more information and reports we receive the more we are able to identify crime trends and put resources into these areas. As I have often said, we cannot investigate what we do not know.”

As part of the campaign, farmers are being offered free farm gate security signs, and stickers displaying information about how to report information. The free resources will be available at some agricultural events held across Victoria throughout 2022.

Some tips from Victoria Police include tagging livestock, locking gates and sheds, securing tools and equipment, and, where possible, locking fuel bowsers and storage tanks.

Sensor lights around sheds and yards, doing regular stock headcounts, installing CCTV, and installing warning lights are also recommended.

Door opens for young writers The Young Writers Award is back for 2022, with this year’s competition asking young writers – what could be behind a mystery door?

Presented by local writers Jem Tyley-Miller and Wayne Marshall, in partnership with Moorabool Shire Libraries, the competition opened on March 14, and will be open for submissions until 11.59 pm on April 29.

Winners in Middle and Upper Primary categories will win $100 and runners-up $50, while winners and runners-up in the Lower Secondary category will win $150 and $75 respectively.

The biggest prize will go to the Upper Secondary winner – a fantastic $200 prize – while the Upper Secondary runner-up will win $100.

Winners and runners-up will be awarded from five age categories: Early Years Primary (Prep, Grade 1 and 2), Middle Primary (Grade 3 and 4), Upper Primary (Grade 5 and 6), Lower Secondary (Years 7 – 9) and Upper Secondary (Years 10 – 12, or under 18).

All winning stories will be displayed in the Lerderderg Library, and entries will be accepted either online via Council’s website, or in-person at Ballan Library, Lerderderg Library, and the Rural Library Van.

Early Years entrants are asked to complete a picture prompt available on the Moorabool Shire Council website by drawing a character they might meet behind the door, or write a description of the character.

All entries must be typed, and will be judged anonymously – so please, no names on your story, only on the cover page.

Middle and Upper Primary entrants must write a short story up to 1000 words, while for Lower and Upper and Secondary entrants, the word limit is 3000 words.

Entry is free, but each child may only enter one story. Winners will be announced on June 4 at an afternoon tea held in conjunction with the Peter Carey Short Story Award, COVID conditions permitting.

World Heritage, a golden opportunity

By Lachlan Ellis There are 13 councils, including Moorabool Shire Council, that have joined forces in a bid to get the Central Victorian Goldfields region on the World Heritage List – and they’re building a compelling case.

If the bid is successful, it is expected to bring greater awareness to the region, and in turn, greater tourism and investment opportunities.

Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said the listing would provide a range of benefits to Moorabool, particularly towns with strong mining history such as Blackwood, Mt Egerton and Gordon.

“Fundamentally, this is something that came from the Cities of Ballarat and Bendigo, and the Central Goldfields Shire, to get the Central Goldfields World Heritage Listed… there’s been some work done to determine whether it meets the criteria, and the initial assessment is that it does and is all still fairly intact,” Cr Sullivan told the Moorabool News.

“The mining operations in Moorabool were particularly around Blackwood, Gordon and Mt Egerton, which all grew into mining towns. There are even some sites in Morrisons as well.

“Creating a comprehensive experience…we believe it could be a huge economic tourist benefit. But there’s a long way to go, there’s a lot of work to be done, but the initial view is the bid does have merit,” he said.

could place the Central Goldfields region on the World Heritage List within five years.

“There’s three stages we’re at, we’ve got a funding bid through the Enabling Tourism Fund we lodged on 4 March, that’s based on the region contributing $125,000, and the State Government giving us $500,000.

That’s to establish sites of significance, and create what’s called a master plan for the region, made up mainly of shortfalls across the region such as infrastructure, and also

what’s called ‘World Heritage Journeys’,” he said.

“Best case scenario, it would probably be up to five years before UNESCO would say to the area, you’ve achieved World Heritage status. That’s been the experience in the past, sites in other parts of Australia have taken that sort of period of time.

“We know though that when the State Government says, ‘we’re backing this site for World Heritage’, it creates a real storm of

interest, because suddenly it’s on everyone’s radar. We’re expecting that the moment we get that backing, and some funding from the State Government, then the sort of visitation we’re hoping to see will start to happen.”

A British World Heritage expert is also being consulted, and has called the Central Goldfields “unparalleled” compared to more than 40 other gold mining regions.

“He’s done a number of these around the world, in his words he’s just blown away with what we’ve got. The next stage will be to get him to come out, together with some other people we’ll engage, to have a look at the draft list of potential sites,” Mr Budge said.

“It’s not just the mining sites we’ll be looking at, it’s also the provision of water supply, the development of railways, the development of legal systems with courthouses, police stations, local government…all that’s part of the fabric of the region.”

Promises, promises of powerline reform

By Lachlan Ellis The Federal Opposition has promised to reform the approval process for transmission projects, if it wins the next election, has been met with both approval and scepticism.

On Friday 18 March, Shadow Minister for Climate Change and Energy, Chris Bowen, announced that, should the Labor Party win the upcoming federal election, it would “work with the states, market bodies, networks, and most importantly communities, to improve the RIT-T (Regulatory Investment Test for Transmission) process”.

Mr Bowen expressed particular concern with how the RIT-T process had been conducted in Western Victoria, where the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project (WVTNP) has been rallied against by affected communities for two years.

“To me, the situation in Western Victoria has confirmed my inclination that the RIT-T process is no longer fit for purpose, especially when you consider the massive scale of transmission upgrades we have to complete over the next decade,” Mr Bowen said in an address to the Energy Networks Australia Conference.

“The RIT-T process was designed for network augmentations, not major new builds or rebuilds. It’s vital that we learn that lesson, because without social licence, we will struggle to deliver the ISP (Integrated System Plan), or the renewable economy it is designed to unlock.”

Federal MP for Ballarat, Catherine King, said the process for the WVTNP had been “atrocious”, and similar projects should require more thorough community consultation in the future.

“I’ve been working with community groups and speaking out against this project for two years. Like everyone, I am incredibly frustrated by the failure of AusNet to listen to our concerns,” she told the Moorabool News.

“Labor’s reforms will give local communities a say from the very beginning of these projects. These are sensible changes that should have been made by the current government years ago. This will mean that locals can have more impact on project routes, the use of existing easements and the location of transfer and terminal stations.

Like windfarm projects, the reforms would also “open the door to ongoing payments to landholders, and benefitsharing with communities”, Ms King added.

Chair of community alliance Stop AusNet’s Towers, Emma Muir, said the proposed changes were promising, but reiterated the call for the Victorian Labor Government to scrap current plans.

“We acknowledge the proposed policy from the Federal Labor Party, they are listening to our concerns and realise that this process and the project is flawed. Their solution would give the communities a voice in future projects, however, we cannot allow the devastating and generational effects of the proposed WVTNP to progress,” Ms Muir said.

“The State Labor Government must step in now and halt the current process driving the WVTNP and send it back to the drawing board, so that it may be managed and progressed with the suitable rigour the Federal Labor party are suggesting.”

Moorabool’s Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell expressed a more cynical reaction to the announcement.

“Is her Labor Party different to the State Labor Party? They are in Government in the State, and they can stop it. Typical King, all care, but won’t take responsibility,” Cr Tatchell said.

“Catherine King has this amazing ability to sound sympathetic to an issue, promise the world, and deliver nothing more than populist statements; She is the Joh BjelkePetersen of Ballarat, simply feeding the chooks.”

Unfortunately ,even if these reforms do go ahead, as a preexisting project, the WVTNP will likely have to continue under current rules.

By Lachlan Ellis After a successful first year in 2021, the Barista Blue program is back, offering young Mooraboolites free barista training and work experience.

The program was launched by the Bacchus Marsh Blue Light committee last February, and this year will offer 27 spots for youth aged 15–17.

Participants will take part in a free barista course at TMG College in West Melbourne, before doing a four-hour volunteer shift at Lola’s Café on Main Street, Bacchus Marsh.

Moorabool Youth Officer, Leading Senior Constable James Ross, said the program offered a foot in the door for both unemployed youth, and those who wanted to go from a current job to working as a barista.

“It seemed to us that there were limited opportunities for some young people in our community, in relation to gaining some work experience. When a lot of young people were knocking on doors looking for jobs, they were asked if they had any experience…of course, if you can’t get a job, you can’t get experience,” LSC Ross told the Moorabool News.

“We thought, what can we do that could

provide them with a bit of experience? It’s a way to help young people gain casual part-time employment, or better improve themselves.

“We’re very fortunate we have Lola’s supporting Barista Blue, and the Bacchus Marsh Community Bank and Arbee providing the essential funds needed. Without that local business support, we wouldn’t be able to do it.”

In last year’s Barista Blue, out of 14 unemployed participants, six were able to gain employment following completion of the program.

This year, applications close on April 4, with successful applicants to be notified before training and work experience, which also start in April.

Youth get the taste for coffee

By Bianca Roberts (Intern 3rd Yr Melb. Uni) The Barista Blue youth program has successfully delivered ‘hands on’ work experience to young Moorabool residents.

The program, created and funded by Bacchus Marsh Branch Blue Light, provided 32 working-age teenagers a four-day barista course at TMG Melbourne.

They then applied their skills during a four-hour shift at Lola’s Café in Bacchus Marsh.

Leading Senior Constable Jim Ross, who oversaw the program said, “it has been fantastic the energy and enthusiasm each of the participants came with to do their time at Lola’s”.

Sophie Bill, 15, appreciated learning about the history and production of coffee, as well as meeting like-minded friends within Moorabool.

“The staff at Lola’s took the time to help me settle in and were appreciative of the effort I put in during some of their busiest hours.

“I went into this program with a casual job already and have since applied for more,” she said.

So far one teen has found a new job after completing the program, with many others feeling ready to start applying.

‘I went very good in the program. I am a lot more confident applying for jobs and I plan to try and get a part time job in a café now,” 17-year-old Max Rovere said.

LSC Ross said they look forward to running another similar program next year.

“The benefit of the program is that its flexible and we can certainly add further aspects to it to improve what is already a great opportunity for young people…watch this space,” he said.

Barista Blue was run in collaboration with local businesses that included Moorabool Shire Council, Arbee Real Estate, Community Bank Bacchus Marsh, No Boundaries Safari, and Lola’s Café.

This program aims to reduce the disparity between rural and metropolitan employment statistics.

Youth disengagement in the workforce is proportionately high in Bacchus Marsh, with data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics suggesting a disengagement rate of 13.2 per cent amongst 15 to 24-year-olds, almost 6 per cent higher than in Greater Melbourne.

More volunteers sought

There is always a need for more volunteers in any organisation, especially now as COVID has restricted a lot of services in the Moorabool Shire.

One local service is seeking additional volunteers and involves the delivery of meals from the Bacchus Marsh Hospital to support the clients of the Moorabool Shire.

Rachel Wright is the Volunteer Coordinator for Meals on Wheels through Western Health’s Volunteer Program, and said with the delivery of meals to residents’ homes it enables many people to remain in their home with assisted living.

“We are putting out the call for additional volunteers to help with the delivery of these meals on a roster system,” she said.

“Usually, it is only once every three weeks, and the packed meals are collected from the hospital and delivered between 11.30am and 1pm.”

Ms Wright said the regular visits from volunteers improves the clients’ wellbeing “It also increases social interaction.”

Harmony Day branches out

By Lachlan Ellis A local school has brought artistic flair to Harmony Day, celebrating multiculturalism with a wall of art and a ‘Harmony Tree’.

On Monday 21 March, students at Bacchus Marsh Primary School placed leaves made of recycled cardboard and ribbons on the Harmony Tree, as well as drawings of various countries’ flags.

On the ribbons, students wrote how they would like to see Harmony Day in action at school, with ideas including an extension of Harmony Day into ‘Harmony Week’, with each day dedicated to a different culture.

The event was organised by Visual Arts Teacher Megan Fromholtz, and the school’s Art Captains: Allyssa, Mikita, Taylah, Rebecca, Sophie, Eddie, Mackenzie, and Amitoz.

Ms Fromholtz said the day was an important opportunity to foster respect for all cultures, and help the community understand cultures different to their own.

“Ideally every day is Harmony Day, but there’s been some good ideas for what people want to see next year. Students want to celebrate the cultures in more ways, they wouldn’t mind traditional dress, some want to hear stories,” Ms Fromholtz told the Moorabool News.

“There’s not much else more important than harmony and love. If you’re able to be living in harmony together and show love and compassion, we are connected and supported. It’s important for all people students, staff, and community to understand the importance of showing harmony in different ways. Together we are stronger, and we can come up with

According to the latest Australian Seasonal Outlook, higher rainfall totals have resulted in below average fire conditions, with reduced fire activity in both grasslands and for-ests this summer.

Much of Victoria will continue to experience average rainfall over the coming months, however temperatures are predicted to be warmer than normal, particularly in the west-ern parts of the state.

CFA District 15 Acting Assistant Chief Fire (A/ACFO) Chris Bigham said while they have been relatively quiet in District 15, the adjoining Districts to the West have been extremely busy since the start of the new year.

“While it is getting cooler with spasmodic rain, the unburnt fuels still remain in large parts of our area,” he said A/ACFO Chris Bigham emphasised that while the FDP is coming to an end in some areas, it is still important to remain vigilant.

“We’re urging everyone to stay safe, whether you’re living in or travelling to high bush-fire risk areas.

“Please monitor the conditions on hot, dry and windy days, as we may still see some days of elevated fire risk,” he said.

While the Fire Danger Period will come to an end, it is still important that residents check the local conditions are safe for any burn-off they were considering undertaking.

“You must register your burn-offs, check weather conditions and follow local council laws and regulations,” A/ACFO Bigham said.

“Harmony Day was a collaboration between the whole school – teachers, support staff, and students – and I think the Art Captains should be really proud of the amazing job they did bringing it all together. Thank you to the amazing Parent Helpers too.”

As someone from a multicultural background, Art Captain Amitoz said Harmony Day was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate her culture.

“Harmony Day is a day that we all try our best to celebrate diversity and different skin colours. I’m not white, and sometimes I feel a bit down because of that, because I feel like I don’t have as many options as everyone else. I try to keep that a secret because I don’t want

anyone to feel bad for me,” she said.

“But Harmony Day feels really good for me. For this Harmony Day we created a Harmony Tree, and it felt really special this year.”

Fellow Art Captain Allyssa added that Harmony Day is important because it represents all the different cultures “And you can represent all the different colours in the world, and all the different people from different places “We all dressed up in orange, I wrote Harmony Day on my legs and harmony on my arm.”

Harmony Day is celebrated annually on March 21 in Australia, and began in 1999.

It is represented by the colour orange, symbolic of peace and diversity.

Archiving the oldest school

By Lachlan Ellis This year, 2022, marks 150 years since Victoria’s public education system was founded – the first in Australia – and a local school has contributed to the archives.

A dedicated Victorian Government website will feature the 483 original government schools from 1872, alongside every other government school established since, displaying a selection of digitally preserved historical records from the past 150 years.

The site will include school history summaries, enrolment registers, and photos.

Over 6,500 boxes of historical documents and items have already been collected and digitised from schools across Victoria, including Bacchus Marsh Primary School – the oldest school in Victoria, opening in 1850.

Williams, said the school was proud of its history, and long connection with the community.

“History is extremely important to us – we have some lovely boards along the front of our school that create a narrative. If members of the community happen to be walking along the front of our school in Lerderderg Street, they can stop and take a moment to read some of the history,” Ms Williams told the Moorabool News.

“You do worry about deterioration of important documents.

Photographs, original handwritten rolls, books from celebrations that have taken place...there’s a huge collection of historical memorabilia and photographs, that we’re thrilled to be having digitised.”

Anyone with historical gems not yet uncovered, such as photos, documents, or other historical school treasures, is encouraged to email them to 150years@education.vic.gov.au, and add to the growing digital time capsule.

public schools in existence since 1872 will be available on the Victorian Government’s website from May. Minister for Education, James Merlino, said this a really special milestone for Victorian education.

“While many aspects of Victoria’s education may have changed, the idea that every child should have access to a free, secular, high-quality education, regardless of their background, will never change.

“I encourage all Victorians and Victorian schools to share their educational history via the 150 Years website, and help commemorate the integral role government schools have played in the educational fabric of our state.”

Vandalised and out of tune

By Lachlan Ellis A piano arranged by Moorabool Shire Council for free public use over summer has sadly been vandalised, with the culprit unknown.

Situated at the Eddie Toole Reserve, Bacchus Marsh, the piano is one of two set up by Council under the ‘Pop-Up Pianos’ project, with the other located at A.A. McLean Reserve Ballan.

Both pianos were sourced from the community, and were painted by local artists with beautiful, eyecatching designs.

However, photos of the pop-up piano at Eddie Toole Reserve were posted on social media on 19 March, showing a panel smashed off the piano.

Crime drops in Moorabool The latest figures released by the Crime Statistics Agency (CSA) are out and according to those statistics, crime has dropped, not just in Moorabool but across the state.

The CSA’s data for the 12 months to the end of December 2021 shows that there were 477,999 criminal offences recorded in Victoria in 2021, representing a decrease of 12.8 per cent, or 70,087 offences, from 2020.

The total marks the lowest number of criminal offences in a calendar year in Victoria since 2014, with robberies also at their lowest since 2014.

Burglaries/break and enters, were at their lowest in Victoria since the Law Enforcement Assistance Program was introduced in 1993, at 21,277 homes broken into.

Moorabool saw an even sharper decline in crime proportionally speaking, with 1,617 offences in 2021 compared to 2,048 in 2020 - a decrease of 21 per cent.

“While the highly unique environment in Victoria last year clearly contributed to the overall decrease in crime, it was incredibly positive to see a reduction in serious offences which impact the community such as home burglaries, robberies and car thefts,” Deputy Commissioner of Regional Operations, Rick Nugent, said.

“While each victim of crime is one person too many, we are pleased that last year we had the lowest number of victims in Victoria since 2010, with almost 14,500 fewer victims of crime than the year prior.”

The top five suburbs for crime in Moorabool remained the same as in 2020 – Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Maddingley, Ballan, and Gordon.

All five towns saw a decrease in crime – Bacchus Marsh experienced almost 300 less crimes, from 907 in 2020 to 608 in 2021.

However, incidents in Moorabool of stealing from a motor vehicle increased from 149 offences to 159, and breaching family violence orders increased from 108 offences to 113.

Drones count koalas

By Lachlan Ellis Exciting new technology has been part of local efforts to monitor koalas, and a local environmental group has thanked the community for their support.

In partnership with the CSIRO, the Moorabool Catchment Landcare Group (MCLG) used infrared drones during the ‘Moorabool Koala Count’ in February, along with community reports of koala sightings.

The drones were used in tandem with reports by ‘citizen scientists’ using the iNaturalist app to report local koala sightings throughout February, as well as the knowledge of Wadawurrung Traditional Owners.

MCLG Group Coordinator, Jackson Cass, said the use of drones will help provide accurate data on koala populations with continued yearly use.

“Essentially what we’re trying to do is address the knowledge gaps that exist on koala populations in the Moorabool region.

While we’re aware anecdotally that there are less koalas in the region, it’s really having that hard data to be able to prove that also, so we can plot the population over time,” Mr Cass told the Moorabool News.

“In the month of February, people that contributed data made a total of 18 koala observations for the entire Moorabool region, compared to just 12 for 2021. It was an awesome result, and it was great to have that engagement with the community, we had 20 people join the event online.”

Representatives from the CSIRO arrived to assist with the Moorabool Koala Count on Wednesday 2 March, and on Thursday 3 March visited Bostock Reservoir, where Wadawurrung Traditional Owners now own a 54-hectare site.

On Thursday 3 March and Friday 4 March, the surveyors headed to Gordon, and were able to fly a thermal drone on the Friday.

The Moorabool Koala Count was a pilot program, and Mr Cass said the MCLG was hoping to expand it in the future, with more community groups and transect lines.

“Eric from the CSIRO used the saying, ‘when’s the best time to plant a tree’, and the best time is 20 years ago…the second-best time is today. It’s the same with monitoring koalas – it would’ve been good to start 20 years ago, but the second-best time is to start today, and continue to do that so we can actually get that information about what the populations are doing,” Mr Cass said.

“That helps us be able to make better decisions about how to protect them, and conserve them into the future.

“I’d like to thank the community…their contribution was really amazing, and really sets the tone about what we can do into the future, and how these results can influence better management actions.”

A local group of knitters has made more than 3,000 items for those in need over the last three years, and they don’t plan to stop any time soon.

The Moorabool Makers Craft Group was instigated by the Lerderderg Library in July 2018, for anyone with an interest in craft – be it knitting or other crafts such as crocheting, macrame, or beading – to meet with fellow crafters and chat over a cuppa.

In the past three years, the group has donated 3,400 items, with 500 donated already this year.

“The group also has an interest in working for the community and those in need, by knitting and crocheting blankets and garments for the KOGO (Knit One Give One) organisation,” Moorabool Makers member Elizabeth Wadeson told the Moorabool News.

“Several of us had been making items for KOGO prior to joining Moorabool Makers and were interested in continuing with this charitable organisation.”

KOGO was founded in 2004 by one person who organised family and friends to knit for charity, to help those in need suffering during a cold winter.

In its first year KOGO distributed 180 scarves, but now the volunteer-run, not-for-profit group distributes over 100,000 items a year, supplying over 310 Public Benevolent Institutions, charities, and government agencies.

The donated items go towards crisis accommodation, emergency relief, homelessness, refugees, domestic violence refuges, remote indigenous communities, and more.

On Wednesday 30 March, the Moorabool Makers will be hosting a guest speaker from KOGO for an afternoon tea, from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm at the Lerderderg Library.

Ballan Brumbies Basketball Results – Week ending Saturday 26 March It’s finals time in the Ballarat Basketball Association and the Ballan Brumbies came into last weekend with a record 11 of its 15 junior teams playing. Amongst a slew of close results, the game of the week was the Under 16 Boys Blue division semi-final against Wildcats White.

In a ‘styles makes fights’ matchup, a balanced Brumbies lineup came up against a dominant individual in Wildcat Mitch Chalmers.

Ballan started the better through an inspired Harrison Clark, who scored the opening two baskets from a pair of acrobatic drives, before Chalmers started to assert himself, scoring six straight points.

After the quick start the game started to become dominated by defences: Ballan’s tight zone against the shot blocking of Wildcats Chalmers and Ziggy Dark. Chalmers aside, Wildcats struggled to break down the Brumbies, whilst at the other end Ballan were able to penetrate with ease, only to be met by long arms repeatedly denying their shots.

The match remained tight, the teams going into half time tied 14 apiece. Chalmers with eight for Wildcats, Clark, Noah Cardona and Sam Lillie each with four for Ballan.

The second half became a rock fight as both teams dug in to try and earn their Grand Final berth, with both teams committing a raft of fouls. Both the fouls and their resulting free throws would prove important as the game progressed.

With Chalmers cutting Ballan to ribbons the Brumbies altered their defense to great effect, limiting the big Wildcat’s effectiveness. At the other end Ballan wasn’t getting its usual offensive punch from Tom Connally or Will Lewis with Cardona instead shouldering the offensive load.

When defensive ace Jayce Bower fouled out with three minutes remaining the team turned to Clark to keep the much bigger Chalmers in check, which he was able to do as the teams finished regulation tied at 27.

In overtime, with both teams in the bonus, the game descended into a procession to the free throw line. Chalmers scored a tough three-point play to give the Wildcats a four point lead with a minute to play before he committed his final foul, ruling him out of the remainder of the game. A strong driving layup from Lillie and a pair of clutch Cardona free throws again tied the match moved into a second overtime.

In the final overtime, Dark traded baskets with Cardona before the Ballan forward calmly drained free throws on consecutive possessions.

In a match that had everything, there was almost a final sting in the tail as Wildcat Archie Haworth scored to cut the margin to a single point with just 10 seconds remaining.

Cardona then turned the ball over in the backcourt. As the diminutive Haworth drive to the hoop for the potential game winner he was met by the 6’2” Lillie who did enough to ensure a missed shot and with it book Ballan’s grand final place by a score of 39-38.

No ‘3-peat’ for Lions Darley Cricket Club – By Todd Whelan Darley fell 56 runs short in its run chase against Golden Point in Saturday’s BCA Grand Final at Eastern Oval. The result ends a dream run for the club following back-to-back Premierships.

After winning the toss, the Lions sent the opposition in, hopeful of any advantage from a wicket on the ‘offering’ for seam bowlers. And indeed, it did. The Lions enjoyed the perfect start taking three quick wickets as Benny Longhurst (2/18) and Madushanka Ekanayake (1/40) struck, elevating the reigning dual champions into the drivers’ seat.

After former Lion Lachie Herring (33) was dropped first ball, Golden Point began their recovery mission to restore the innings and avoid a repeat of the club’s Grand Final loss 12 months ago. Golden Point batting allrounder Manjula DeZoysa (74*) led the charge to set the Lions 192 for victory from their 50 overs.

Darley’s response with the bat was dealt a cruel blow when newly crowned Cleary Medalist Dilon Chandima (19) was caught, flushing a ball straight to mid-off. According to Lions coach Brian Wheelahan a metre either way off Chandima’s bat would have found the boundary, but it wasn’t to be.

“It just wasn’t our day”, Wheelahan said.

Lions wickets fell with untimely regulatory as they struggled to build any partnership of match winning significance. Brodie Ward (23) and Captain Bradley Barnes (12) shared a 30run stand for the fourth wicket to be the Lions best but clearly it wasn’t enough as poor shot selection on the back of scoreboard pressure took an ailing toll.

Wheelahan opted the glass half full approach in the aftermath.

“While (the loss) it’s still pretty raw, what an incredible ride we’ve been on,” he said.

“And we can’t wait to do all again.”

You have to admire Wheelahan for his achievements and his grace in defeat.

“We’ll be back, you can count on it,” Wheelahan said with a promise.

“The club is in a really good space at the moment, you can expect some exciting announcements via our socials over the coming weeks.”

Unfortunately for the Lions their weekend was compounded even further with Grand Final losses in the Third Grade and Under 17 competitions.

Local cricketer hits it for six

By Lachlan Ellis A Moorabool cricketer has been named best and fairest in the Ballarat Cricket Association League, but he’s already looking ahead to another accolade.

Dilan Chandima plays for the Darley Cricket Club, and on Monday 21 March was awarded the E.J Cleary Medal.

He joined the Lions after playing for Sunbury United last season, where he also won the league best and fairest, to play turf cricket and join childhood friends at Darley.

Chandima had a stellar first season with the Lions, with the all-rounder hitting 767 runs at 47.9, in addition to taking 21 wickets.

He hit two centuries and four half-centuries, including 112 not out against NapoleonsSebastopol in the semi-final, to help put Darley into the Grand Final.

But despite a stellar season, Mr Chandima said he was shocked to receive the E.J. “It was a surprise for me. I was hoping there was a chance that I would win the Champion Player Award, but winning the E.J Cleary Medal surprised me,” he told the Moorabool News last Tuesday.

While winning a medal was “the dream of any cricketer”, Chandima has another goal in sight, as Darley take on Golden Point in the Grand Final on Saturday.

If they win, Darley will make history, with three consecutive premierships.

“Winning a medal with a championship is very important to me, so I hope to add value to my medal over the weekend,” he said.

Mr Chandima said the medal wouldn’t have been possible without the support of the club and fellow players.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The 2021/22 BMLAC summer season came to a conclusion on Saturday with the Centre Championship Day held at Masons Lane Reserve.

Athletes competed in their five chosen events, with medals up for grabs for the top three placegetters.

The Championships were conducted in perfect conditions as temperatures reached the mid 20s and not a breath of wind to hamper the athlete’s performances.

An amazing 379 Personal Best performances were recorded for the day. Bridie Shanahan set her nineth Centre record for the season, increasing her own Under 16 Triple Jump record with a final distance of 10.57 metres.

Once events had concluded, athletes and supporters came together for the 2021/22 Track and Field Season Centre presentations. President, Maria Downes congratulated everyone on a fabulous season especially during the difficult and trying times of the COVID pandemic. Maria thanked all local businesses who continue to support the Centre and applauded all athletes and families on another successful season.

Little Athletics Victoria service awards were presented.

Triple Crown triumph as Jet soars

By Tim O'Connor (HRV) Im Ready Jet claimed the inaugural Kerryn Manning Trotting Mares Triple Crown with a Group 1-winning performance at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night.

The Anton Golino-trained mare showed her class to take out the TAB Sumthingaboutmaori Trotters Free For All (2760m) by 5m over Aldebaran Crescent (David Aiken/James Herbertson), with the result giving the five-year-old a onepoint victory over the runner-up in the series.

Aldebaran Crescent had topped the leaderboard heading into the third and final leg of the Triple Crown, but was overtaken by Im Ready Jet, who pocketed a $10,000 bonus for connections.

“She's something else,” driver Jason Lee said after the win.

“She still did that in second gear up the straight, she sort of needed something to race her.

“I was pretty confident a long way out, just with how well she was travelling and Kate (Gath) had done a little bit of work (with Vacation Hill). She wasn't walking in front, she was bowling at a good enough click. We ran a bit of time.”

Vacation Hill (Andy Gath/Kate Gath) charged to the front in the early stages of the race before the field moved into single file. Im Ready Jet eventually moved up outside the leader at the bell and proved too tough for her rivals, hitting the front before the straight and then comfortably holding Aldebaran Crescent in the run to the line. Silver Power, who was on Australian debut for trainer-driver Jack MacKinnon, flashed

home for third, just a whisker behind the runner-up.

Im Ready Jet’s win came in a mile rate of 1:59.1min, which was just 0.4sec outside the track record. The Sumthingaboutmaori success is her fifth at Group 1 level and takes her earnings over $400,000.
