By Lachlan Ellis The pavilion at Ballan Recreation Reserve will be demolished in the coming weeks, with just over $4 million for the new works contributed by a range of groups.

The State Government provided $3 million under Sports & Recreation Victoria (SRV), while Moorabool Council contributed close to $870,000, including a $90,000 Community Grant.

Member for Buninyong, Michaela Settle, joined Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan to turn the first sod on Wednesday 16 February and said the works were the culmination of consultation with the user groups, and cooperation between the State Government and Council.

“I’m eternally grateful that Council got behind this project and supported it in a really substantial way. There was a substantial financial commitment that was required from Council to get what we needed, but it’s also been about the consultation,” Ms Settle said.

“There’s a lot of people’s needs that needed to be addressed and discussed, and I was really delighted about the amount of effort Council have put in to discussing with these local groups what they wanted, and making sure that they got it.”

The Ballan Recreation Reserve’s Committee of Management raised $40,000 for the improvements, which when completed will include a large function room, kitchen and bar, office space, meeting rooms and storage sheds for the tenant sporting clubs.

The pavilion’s new change rooms will include four female friendly change rooms and umpire change rooms, with a new tiered concourse improving the view of the oval.

User groups including the Ballan Football & Netball Club, Tennis Club, Cricket Club and Kyokuchin Karate Club also use the Reserve and will benefit from the upgrades.

Cr Sullivan said it has been a journey, but at the end of the day “we’re going to end up with a very good development for Ballan.”

This is an exciting development …this is a collaborative affair,” he added.

“There’s been a lot of buy-in from Government, Council and the community that gives these projects a far better outcome.

Everyone has ownership of it, it’ll be a place of pride for the people of Ballan who use this facility.”

Secretary of the Ballan Bowling Club, Michael Conroy, said the upgrades would benefit the whole community.

“It’s been a long time coming, but it’s going to be a great community function centre for the wider community to utilise, not just the user groups. It’s there for all Ballan and surrounding districts,” he told the Moorabool News.

“The SAG [Stakeholders Advisory Group] have put in a lot of hard work for this project.”

Asbestos removal is the first step and is already underway, with the project expected to be completed by October this year.

Goldwind provided a further $73,400 Community Grant for the kitchen fit out, while the Ballan Community Bank Branch provided $50,000 for the works.

Stories highlight storm experiences A Blackwood woman has shared her experience during last October’s storm, and though she was terrified, she was also amazed by the outpouring of support from the community.

Grace Rankin has a respiratory illness and relies on oxygen therapy to breathe at night, and said that while the storms in June and October were both scary, the October storm was more frightening.

When power went out across much of Moorabool Shire, including Blackwood, on Thursday 28 October 2021, Grace was left unable to power her home oxygen concentrator.

“It was pretty awful really. I don’t frighten easy, but I was frightened, and I guess my anxiety made my breathing even more difficult,” Ms Rankin said.

“I had no power to use my concentrator… fortunately I’ve got bottles, but one of them was almost empty and because it was dark, I wouldn’t have been able to connect the other one up. I just didn’t know which way to turn.”

Ms Rankin had been in contact with Moorabool’s Storm Recovery Team after the June storm, and Community Recovery

Officer Kristi Sullivan realised how vulnerable Ms Rankin was without power.

“Kristi rang and she was amazing. She was just in touch all the time and she organised the CERT team to come, and they took me to Daylesford hospital which was amazing,” Ms Rankin said.

Korweinguboora local Andrew Phillips

sees the bright side of losing the trees surrounding his property, saying “We never used to get sunlight in winter”.

It took Andrew and his partner eight hours to cut their way out from the front door of their Korweinguboora property to where their driveway meets Back Settlement Road on Thursday 10 June.

From midnight, they’d been awoken to the

thud of “a tree down every ten minutes,” Andrew said.

“We still don’t sleep when it’s windy.”

The property is their little piece of bush sanctuary and is surrounded by the Wombat State Forest on all sides.

“We were so bushfire conscious that we really didn’t think of storms,” Andrew said.

It’s a familiar story for those who, like Andrew, lived through the severe weather event that he likens to “a tornado”.

The Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning said the Wombat State Forest was more severely impacted by October’s storm than June’s.

At least four homes were destroyed in the October storm, and at least three more were damaged but inhabitable.

Feedback and thoughts sought on waste

Council is asking residents to help shape their Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy.

The Draft is out for community consultation and community feedback is sought.

Moorabool Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said as Moorabool's population grows, and the waste system in Australia transforms, “we need to find better and affordable ways to manage our resources to ensure the environment is protected for generations to come.”

“The feedback from last year’s consultation has been used to inform the draft strategy, and we’d now love to hear the

thoughts of those contributors, as well as other residents throughout the Shire, on our draft strategy,” he said.

This is Phase 2 of consultation. During the initial phase, Council received 700 contributions from residents, providing feedback and thoughts on current waste services, future services, transfer stations, illegal dumping, hard waste services and waste education.

Feedback on the draft strategy closes 20 March 2022.

Protesters plan ahead

By Lachlan Ellis Their fight against overhead power lines will continue throughout 2022, and community group Stop AusNet’s Towers is getting its campaign into gear, with community meetings and a tractor rally.

A series of community meetings are planned from February 28 to March 6, with three of those meetings in Moorabool.

At 7 pm on Monday, February 28, the group plans to hold a meeting at Bacchus Marsh Public Hall.

At 7 pm on Tuesday, March 1, they plan to meet at the Ballan Lawn Bowls Club, and on Wednesday, March 2 they will meet at the Springbank Football Club at 7 pm.

At the latter two meetings, free barbeques will be on offer alongside information about the Stop AusNet’s Towers campaign, legal challenge, the EES process, and land access.

On Tuesday, March 8, Stop AusNet’s Towers members will head to Spring Street for a tractor rally, with hundreds of farmers, residents, and landowners expected to take to the steps of the Victorian Parliament.

With their tractors and striking signs, they will demand the State Government reject AusNet’s plans for the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project (WVTNP).

Stop AusNet’s Towers spokeswoman, Emma Muir, said the group would continue fighting against the “unsafe, inefficient” plans.

“Too many of our politicians, including the Ministers in charge of this project, have so far refused to come and meet us, so we’re taking our fight to them so we can deliver a simple message: Stop AusNet’s Towers – save our communities and farms,” she told the Moorabool News.

“If AusNet gets its way, this project will devastate our communities. Bushfire risk will skyrocket, high-value agricultural land that feeds Victoria will be destroyed and land values will plummet.”

Ms Muir said the group did not oppose renewable energy, but did oppose the way in which the WVTNP would go about transmitting it.

“Stop AusNet’s Towers supports renewable energy, supports action on climate change and supports the environment. A green generation solution requires a green transmission solution.

Using outdated, inferior, and destructive overhead electricity transmission technology is not in Australia’s strategic national interest, nor cost-effective,” she said.

"Above ground transmission infrastructure is not a future proof solution and AusNet, AEMO and the government are green washing this project.”

Closter sits in eighth

Bacchus Marsh’s Max Closter headed to Swan Hill for the second round of the Australian Arenacross Series on Saturday, February 12. With the track in perfect condition, the wind and afternoon sun led to highly competitive racing, where a mistake could set a rider back in many positions, making the ideal lap a dominating one.

“I did enjoy Swan Hill because it was more technical, and it was a lot more challenging. I loved the track because it was tricky and technical, and it helps me to become a better rider,” the 21-year-old Max Closter and former Ninja Warrior semi-finalist said, who is constantly driven to be better in whatever he does.

“I felt pretty good out on the track since it was like 32 degrees out there making it a lot more challenging. The track conditions got very rough. I was struggling with the heat halfway through the races,” he said.

“I felt I was racing so much better; I just made some mistakes in the last round. All out through the day, I was proud of how I raced and finished eighth overall. I am keen for the next round and motivated to get in the top five.”

Australian Arenacross director Jessica Proctor said the perfect racing conditions at Swan Hill meant thousands of spectators who converged on the race circuit were treated to high-quality racing across all the classes.

“We’re delighted with the response we’ve received from both the racers and fans so far in this nationally-recognised, MA-sanctioned series,” Proctor explained.

“Until now, there’s been a big void in Australian events between grassroots racing and the elite-level national championships, and the aim of the Australian Arenacross Series is to bridge that gap and foster the level wave of racers who might one day want to become professional racers.”

However, the completion of the series has been thrown into turmoil as Ms Proctor suffered a medical emergency after the event, which requires further treatment. Unfortunately, due to the incident, Protraxx has postponed the next two rounds of the Australian Arenacross Series.

Future dates given from Motorcycling Australia are September, 10 and November, 5. Venue locations may change that will cater better to the event and crowds and create a better experience for all involved.

Protraxx have apologised for the inconvenience and hope to build up to a great event for the last two rounds.

Cop a coffee when shopping

An initiative to further connect police with the community has had its first session for the year, with a free coffee and a chat on offer for locals every month.

The ‘Coffee with a Cop’ initiative has seen interruptions during COVID, but this year Bacchus Marsh Police plan to hold the sessions on the first Tuesday of every month.

The first session for 2022 was held at the Bacchus Marsh Village Shopping Centre on Tuesday 1 February from 9.30 – 10.30 am, and the next will be held on Tuesday 1 March, same time and place.

Senior Sergeant Jen Horgan became Station Commander at Bacchus Marsh Police Station last November, and said connecting with the community was one of her top priorities.

“The last two years we’ve spent a lot of time interacting the community, talking about Chief Health Officer directions: masks, curfews, that kind of thing. I want to get back to ‘back to basics’ policing, and just speak to people – see

what they want from us, what they’re seeing, and what we can do to support them,” she told the Moorabool News.

“It’s really nice speaking to people not on the end of a Triple Zero call. It’s nice to meet with the community on more neutral terms, and be more available as well. If people know the session’s on, they can come along, or if they pass by and see us there, there might be something in the back of their minds they want to know, that they haven’t wanted to bother the police about.

“The day we did it last month was just before kinder went back, so we had quite a few kids we could give colouring books and pencils too, so that was nice.”

Though police interacted with the community online during the height of the pandemic, including on the Moorabool Eyewatch Facebook page, Senior Sergeant Horgan said it was “fantastic to be able to get back to face-to-face”.

Aspiring leaders sought A Council program for community minded Mooraboolites is taking applications for its third year, and is completely free.

The Community Leadership Program is open for applications until 31 March, with the 18week program free for Moorabool residents, or anyone with a connection to Moorabool, over the age of 16.

Julie is a 2021 participant and said she was reluctant to apply at first, but was glad she did.

"I saw the Community Leadership Program two weeks prior to when it closed, and I just disregarded it. It was so far outside my comfort zone. I didn’t know anyone in the town, I was new…and then I thought, give it a go, what have I got to lose?” she said.

“I have walked away with so much more than I could've ever anticipated. I have experienced a change of my perception of leadership while participating in the program. I don’t consider myself a leader, but I have realised we lead every day without knowing and we can be an influence on those around us.”

Another participant, David, said he was unsure about applying due to the time required, but had no regrets about taking part.

“From a personal point of view, when deciding to join the program, I was a little bit apprehensive due to the time commitment involved and that was a little hurdle I had to get over initially, but I couldn't have done anything better with my time. By the end of the program we are actually making real change with our projects moving forward,” he said.

“The connections we have built along the way with community groups, within Council and our connections within our group, some of which are potentially lifelong. We never would have been at that stage if we hadn’t have done this program.

“The positive experience we have gained from this program has provided me the tools to be a better community leader.”

Projects completed by Community Leadership Program participants include last years ‘Bacchus Marsh says Thank You Frontline Workers’, and the Moorabool Paste Ups Program, which currently has artwork on buildings across the shire.

A Moorabool author has launched her sixth actionpacked book this month, the second of a series, with the third already in the works.

Blackwood author Trudy Adams launched ‘The Zalem Crisis’ on 5 February, the second book in the ‘Armoured Butterfly’ series and a sequel to ‘The A’zyon Warrior’, which she published in 2021.

The story continues on from the events of ‘The A’zyon Warrior’, with teenage protagonist Adaliah, Lady of Targe, working to thwart the plans of the Zalem cult.

After two years of peace in the Rhea Lands, on the anniversary of the death of King Cades, war again threatens Targe, and Adaliah is called once more to take up her swords to save her family and kingdom from evil.

Ms Adams said she had been writing for almost 20 years, originally for a teenage audience but also for adults.

“I first began writing when I was 17. My first book, Desolate Beauty, was published when I was 22, in 2009,” she told the Moorabool News.

“The Zalem Crisis is an actionfilled story that explores the trauma of defeats, and the importance of rising again to overcome obstacles. It also looks

Ms Adams has a keen interest in getting young people reading and writing, and holds writing workshops in local schools from Grade 4 and up.

“I have a passion for developing literacy amongst children and young people, as well as for prompting the power of words and stories,” she said.

Local art pushing buttons

A local artist’s unique artwork made with buttons, is on display at Lerderderg Library, and you can purchase the eye-catching designs for yourself.

Diane Cassar’s ‘Buttons Up’ art is being exhibited in the Moor Art Space at the Lerderderg Library until Monday February 28.

The former Bacchus Marsh resident said she was grateful for the opportunity to get more eyes on her artwork.

“I’ve been making and selling art for about three years now…I had a few buttons in my collection and thought, what can I do with these?

I wanted to use them creatively, and it went from there. There

were a few things I created that got a lot of attention,” she told the Moorabool News.

“It’s amazing to have my work exhibited in the library, it’s massive for me. I’m very grateful to Moorabool Shire to have given me that opportunity,” she said.

The pieces on the walls at the Moor Art Space are for sale, but they’re not the only works Ms Cassar creates. She also does custom designs, as well as earrings and greeting cards.

“I take a lot of custom orders for art of people’s dogs…what’s up in the library is just what I’ve created to sell, but I do a lot of custom orders too,” she said.

“I don’t sit and do them from start to finish, so a piece might take me

anywhere from a couple of hours to a week. A lot of time gets put into them.”

The striking designs range from animals, nature, logos, characters from movies, and more.

Ms Cassar said many ideas for her pieces came about with children in mind, as she brainstormed what designs parents might like in their children’s rooms.

“I’ve done a lot of nursery items where I think, what would an expectant mum want in a nursery for her child? Getting the feedback off people, and the reaction they have, is overwhelming to me,” she said.

COVID – isolate and recover at home A new campaign from the State Government has been launched, to support Victorians experiencing mild COVID-19 symptoms recover from home.

The ‘Get the Right Help for Your Recovery’ campaign will run across TV, radio, digital, social, print, and outdoor media, and remind Victorians to keep Triple Zero (000) calls for emergencies to protect the sickest Victorians. Save 131 444 for when you need police, but not the sirens.

More than 550,000 cases of COVID-19 have been diagnosed across Victoria since 1 January, but only 0.71 per cent of those have required hospital care.

For most Victorians, COVID-19 recovery simply means rest, hydration, and pain relief at home.

But for those that experience more severe symptoms, the campaign also explains what signs to look out for and what to do if you need additional help – such as speaking to your GP, pharmacist, or the National Coronavirus Hotline.

“For most Victorians who catch COVID, what they’ll need is a few days of rest and some pain relief – not an ambulance or an ED,” Victorian Minister for Health, Martin Foley, said.

“We’re helping people get the right care for their recovery and know what to do if they start to experience more serious symptoms.”

The campaign will be translated

into 41 languages, have version catered towards Aboriginal Victorians, and reach the disabled community through Auslan translation and ads on Vision Australia radio.

The ‘COVID Positive Pathways’ program has also helped 545,000 people safely isolate and recover at home since it was launched in October.

The program surveys people who test positive to COVID-19, to determine what level of support they require, and connect them with the necessary services such as community health services, GPs and other providers.

Tee-rific partnership building bridges

By Lachlan Ellis A local golf club is ‘swinging’ a wind farm’s praises, after more than $50,000 was donated for five bridges on the course.

Under Round 2 of the Moorabool Wind Farm’s Community Fund, the Ballan Golf Club received $53,000 for five bridges across the river, upgrading the flimsy bridges it had before.

Vice President of the Club, Barry Sims, said the pedestrian bridges would serve not just club members, but the whole Ballan community.

“All we had before these new bridges were the wooden one’s underneath, they’re pretty dangerous. We’ve been wanting new bridges for years and years, so thank goodness for the Wind Farm,” Mr Sims told the Moorabool News.

“We have some just for the carts, and then two we can drive the tractor over. And of course, the general public use them every morning walking their dogs. They’re for the community as well.

“I’ve been here for 45 years, and until the Wind Farm and the Ballan Community Bank came along, no one got anything.

The contribution by those two groups has been incredible,” he said.

Helen Kennedy is the Community Engagement Manager at Goldwind Australia, which owns and operates the Moorabool Wind Farm.

She said she was proud to see money pumped back into the community via projects such as the bridges.

“It’s fantastic, this is exactly what the Community Fund is all about – trying to help as many groups locally for as long as possible. This particular project is a great example, because it’s helping the Golf Club and, more widely, members of the general community,” Ms Kennedy said.

“It’s fantastic to see it come to fruition, and we hope we can help many more projects like this over the remainder of the life of the Wind Farm.”

Since the Community Fund began development five and a half years ago, close to $500,000 has been contributed locally

by Goldwind.

“And that will continue every year going forward,” Ms Kennedy added.

More than just a pub feed

By Lachlan Ellis Like the rest of the hotel hospitality industry, Ballan’s Great Western Hotel has taken a huge hit during the pandemic – but the pub is bouncing back, with a revamped menu and a new head chef.

The local pub was closed for five months during COVID with lockdowns and unworkable density limits, but is back better than ever with a new, updated menu that focuses both on quality and value for money.

Owner Mitch Duncan said the Great Western was focusing on providing a great dining experience the whole community can enjoy.

“I’d call our menu ‘bistro food, with pub influences’…we have pub classics like fish and chips, schnitzel, and lamb shoulder…it’s just beautiful food,” Mr Duncan told the Moorabool News.

“There’s a lot more on our new menu in the $25 - $35 range. If you want to come down for a great night out, you can. If you want to nick down for a pub classic, you can do that t00. We’re accessible for everyone.”

New head chef Clive Kirby – who ran Buninyong’s Pig & Goose for seven years – said a new lunch menu would include lighter and cheaper options, with plans for weekend breakfasts also in the works, depending on staff availability.

Australia, Melbourne especially, is very eclectic, it’s the merging of flavours from lots of cultures. That’s the type of food we serve,” Mr Kirby said.

“Wherever we can we source food locally, and I bake sourdough every day. Our food is fresh, it’s clean, it’s tasty. We’ve got Italian nights, bingo, and Sunday roasts.

It’s about bringing the whole family together.

Is $50 million enough for koalas?

The Federal Government has announced a record $50 million investment into koala conservation, but conservationists have stopped short of fully praising the move.

Of the $50m, $20m will go towards grants for projects led by Natural Resource Management groups, NGOs, Indigenous groups, and State and Territory governments, to build on work guided by the findings of the National Koala Monitoring Program.

A further $10m will go towards extending the National Koala Monitoring Program, with another $10m for grants for small-scale community projects such as habitat protection and restoration.

Another $2 million will go towards research and application of research outcomes to address health challenges such as koala retrovirus and koala herpes viruses, with a further $1 million to fund expansion of the national training program in koala care, treatment, and triage.

Minister for the Environment, Sussan Ley, said the new package will take Government spending on koalas to more than $74 million since 2019, bringing together land managers, researchers, veterinarians and citizen scientists, to address a full range of support strategies.

“The extra funding will build on work already happening across the koalas’ range to restore and connect important habitat patches, control feral animals and weeds and improve habitat.

“Together we can ensure a healthy future for the koala and this decision, along with the total $74 million we have committed to koalas since 2019 will play a key role in that process.”

But conservationists are not convinced the funding, nor the upgrading of koalas’ conservation status from ‘vulnerable’ to ‘endangered’ in New South Wales, Queensland, and the ACT, are enough.

Chair of the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF), Deborah Tabart OAM, said the Government need to back up its words with legislative action.

“These funds are generous, but the detail is lacking. If we could turn back time, the solution would have been ‘don’t destroy koala habitat in the first place’. But now that the damage has been done, we can only hope Federal Government has enough sense to use this huge allocation of taxpayer funds to implement actual solutions, not tokenistic gestures,” Ms Tabart said.

“The change in [conservation] status is too little, too late. The Federal Government may be offering our koalas a nice new word, but behind all the photo opportunities and political rhetoric they continue to approve the destruction of koala habitat.”

Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, I read in the Moorabool News (People Power Deny Access 8 Feb 2022) the ongoing fight by landowners against Ausnet. I did write to the Moorabool News in January 2021 about this matter.

I was very pleased to see that Mr Gerald Conroy had locked his gates and denied entry to ausnet, according to the article.

His move is EXACTLY within the law, and his action is to be applauded by all landowners.

Our land ownership is according to Fee Simple and this is part of the Property Law Act. All private land in Australia is Fee Simple land. This comes from the Magna Carta, about 800 years of democracy.

Reference in the article to the SEC is correct, in that when the SEC was a government department, it was part of the CROWN and land acquisition was according to the rules of Fee Simple. Under this system, Government has the power to compulsorily acquire your land BUT ONLY FOR A CROWN PURPOSE.

As a private corporation, Ausnet has no more power to do anything that you or I can do.

Ausnet have NO AUTHORITY to enter any land except with the specific agreement of the owner, regardless of what Ausnet or Dan Andrews says.

Ausnet will pull any stunt to get access.

If they go to the extent of having a search warrant, then the actions MUST be in relation to an illegal activity, and must be a police action. The cops cannot get a warrant and then allow Ausnet to enter your property and do land surveys.

The laws of trespass are well defined, so landowners need to persist.

As a side, if Australia attempts to become a republic, we WILL lose our land rights and all land will be dealt with by government legislation. We will then become slaves to the republic. Just beware.

In 2020, a NSW parliamentary inquiry found the state’s koalas would go extinct in the wild by 2050, unless urgent government intervention took place.

Three developments rejected

By Lachlan Ellis Three applications for two dwellings on each block in Ballan have been unanimously rejected by Council, in line with the Planning Department’s recommendations.

The applications at 1, 2, and 16 Alexander Drive came before the Development Assessment Committee (DAC) meeting last Wednesday 16 February and were all similar, with two single storey dwellings with four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and double garages in each of the plans.

There were two objections to the 1 Alexander Drive application, while those at 2 and 16 Alexander Drive did not receive objections.

Council Planners argued the applications contradicted the Moorabool Planning Scheme, did not meet neighbourhood character objectives, did not respect the spacious character of the area, and did not provide adequate space for the growth of new canopy trees.

All Councillors present agreed with the Planning Department, voting in favour of the recommendations to reject all three applications.

In May 2020, two-lot subdivision applications for the three sites were also rejected by Council.

VicPol backs e-scooter trial

By Lachlan Ellis Victoria Police have cautiously backed an ongoing trial of e-scooters, but warned participants that they must ride sensibly.

Assistant Commissioner of Road Policing, Glenn Weir, addressed the media on 7 February 2022, at the Victoria Police Centre in Docklands.

“The e-scooter trial that’s being run by the Department of Transport is one that Victoria Police is committed to supporting. Privately-owned e-scooters are illegal – if they’re over 200 watts or go over 10 kilometres an hour, they’re illegal,” Assistant Commissioner Weir said.

“The trial that the Department of Transport is running for some time in the City of Ballarat, and around Melbourne, is one we’re keen to support, because it probably offers another way to get around our great city and enjoy summer weather– but it has to be done safely.”

Commissioner Weir said unfortunately they’ve seen some examples where it hasn’t been done safely.

“We ran an operation in the Melbourne CBD recently where we detected 38 different offences on e-scooters. That’s a combination of privately-owned ones, and the ones being run through the trial.”

Most of the offences observed were not wearing a helmet, disobeying red lights, and riding on the road on the unregulated privately-owned e-scooters.

The Assistant Commissioner is hopeful trial participants will behave and won’t need to be strictly policed.

“We’re hopeful that everyone will do the right thing. We want people to engage with the trial, and do it properly, do it sensibly. You will be breath tested, you can’t be over the limit, the same as a motor vehicle. You can’t have a passenger, and you must wear a helmet,” he said.

“We want people to self-regulate here, we don’t want to have to be out necessarily pulling people over, because we want them to be doing the right thing. But let me tell you, if they don’t, we will rigorously enforce people who are doing the wrong thing.

“We want to get a real sense through an evaluation of whether this is worth going ahead with for the Government.”

The 12-month e-scooter trial began in the City of Ballarat on 15 December 2021, and the City of Melbourne, City of Yarra, and City of Port Phillip on 1 February 2022, with a speed limit of 20 km/h in bike lanes, shared paths, and roads.

Riding a high-powered privately-owned e-scooter on a public road can attract a $909 fine, with fines of $227 handed out for exceeding the speed limit or not wearing a helmet while riding an e-scooter.

With the e-Scooter trial now in full swing, Victoria Police will be actively enforcing the e-Scooter trial regulations – anyone caught in breach of the rules will be subject to penalties to ensure the safety of all road users.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics Last Saturday morning competition returned to Masons Lane Reserve.

Bridie Shanahan continued to add to her record tally claiming another 2 Centre records. First up Bridie bettered her Under 16 Discus record with a throw of 31.66 metres. Later in the morning Bridie then broke the Under 16 Triple Jump record leaping a new record distance of 10.25 metres.

Ballan 2nd XI v Creswick (R13) Ballan 8/110 lost Creswick 4/210 Bowling - Mack Popple 2/28, Max Burton 1/29 Batting - Ned Loft 42, Max Burton 21 Creswick won the toss and elected to bat first.

Opening bowlers Eli Muir and James Burton got Ballan off to a tidy start keeping the run rate low.

Mack Popple, coming on first change picked up two wickets in his 1st over, LBW and then caught behind, to put Creswick on the back foot temporarily.

Unfortunately, with early multiple dropped catches off John Costello in his first over, this resulted in a 126 run partnership that was only finally broken in the 32nd over by an in-swinging yorker from Max Burton that took leg stump out of the ground.

A late run out to dismiss the Creswick captain on 98 by Michael Vallance, the fielding highlight.

Creswick finished on 4/210.

With wickets falling regularly, only a 40 run partnership between Ned Loft and Max Burton.

Ned Loft, batting at first drop, compiled a fantastic 42 before stumbling, falling over and getting run out in the 33rd over of the innings.

More wickets fell and after a final late flourish from Glenn Easterbrook, who hit a great pull-shot off the last ball of the innings for four, Ballan finished on 8/110.

Ballan played against a strong Naps-Sebas Yellow team and came out on top.

Ballan’s bowling and fielding improves dramatically each week, two run outs by direct hits were a highlight. Ned Conroy and Lachie Olthof made no mistake when they threw down the stumps, they each contributed 10 runs, Lachie bowled 1/6 and Ned 0/6. Best bowling was Cooper Olthof with 2/15, (6 runs), next was Charlie Black with 1/5 (6 runs). Top score was Mickey Rawlins 13 runs, closely followed by Eddie Bayard with 12, Eddie also took a wicket with 1/6. Banjo Luke (8 runs) sacrificed making runs to cleverly protect his partner Layla Shugg, he survived a very impressive over from NapsSebas best bowler by playing some magnificent defensive shots. Layla who has only played a couple of games, was not out and ran between the wickets very well.

On the road, Lions bounce back Darley Cricket Club - By Todd Whelan Darley’s comfortable 78 run win over Mount Clear at the weekend consolidates their second placing on the BCA table with three games to play before finals.

The Lions can’t miss (finals), as a highly anticipated crack at a three-peat lies in waiting. Their last three home and away games include meetings with Naps-Sebas (3rd), Wendouree (1st) and Ballarat-Redan (6th) in what looms an ideal preparation en-route (potentially) to ‘the big dance’. But can the Lions deliver when it counts most without star all-rounder Danza Hyatt? One man in particular could well prove the key.

Opening batsman Dilon Chandima continued his stellar debut season on Saturday with a run-a-ball 89 to put the Lions into a commanding position with runs on the board - 220 of them. To say the little ‘Chandimaster’ left a third century out there would be an understatement. Given the classy and entertaining nature of his innings that included 11 fours and a six it was reasonable to speculate Chandima could have gone ‘big’, eyeing 150 plus but it wasn’t to be. Barely troubled throughout his 89 ball dig, Chandima’s knock came to a premature end when he was stumped down the legside with the score on 137 and plenty overs still in hand.

Lions coach Brian Wheelahan acknowledged Chandima among others in the aftermath.

“Dilon has endorsed himself as one of the best players in the competition given how dangerous he is with both bat and ball,” he said.

“He’s really stepped up in Danza’s absence and oozes class all around the wicket.”

Wheelahan also paid tribute to all rounder Hasi Wickramasinghe who is enjoying his best season with the bat since joining the Lions.

“It’s a real credit to Hasi, he has worked extremely hard on his batting and is now in a great space, fully in tune with his own game,” he said.

While Captain Brad Barnes missed out with the bat - his on-field leadership was crucial.

Barnes was motivating by voice all day in the trying heat and nailed his bowling changes to perfection. Furthermore, he was backed

up in by his players in the field in what was arguably their best performance of the season - they caught everything and saved a number of boundaries on an otherwise unforgiving, lightning-fast outfield.

Wheelahan hit the nail on the head identifying the most pleasing aspect of the win.

“It was a great response from the group on the back of a disappointing loss,” he said.

“Saturday was a real gritty win - great teams always bounce back.”
