Showcasing vintage machines

By Lachlan Ellis The world’s biggest Ronaldson Tippett machinery museum is hosting its annual rally this weekend, and it’s located in Ballan.

The Ballan District Vintage Machinery and Vehicle Club will run its 35th ‘Great Vintage Rally’ on Sunday 20 February, and there’s a wide range of things to see and do.

From vintage engines, classic cars and motorbikes, sheep shearing demos, beautiful handcrafts along with stallholder displays and more, there will be something at the Rally for kids and adults alike at the Old Ballan Racecourse.

And of course, the famous vintage tractor pull will be on again, with an assortment of tractors competing to see which has the most grunt, pulling a huge trailer with a water barrel on it.

President of the Club, Perc Robinson, said they were proud of its collection, and the work that had gone into it.

“We’ve got about 160 members, ranging in ages from our youngest, Lucas, who’s 10…to our oldest member in his 90s. We’re basically a big men’s shed, we’re very active on Wednesdays,” Mr Robinson told the Moorabool News.

“Our members are very enthusiastic and proud of our collection. Thousands of hours have been put into the collection and restoration, and there are lots more buildings out the back to come.”

A faithfully restored Ronaldson Tippett tractor, believed to be from 1928, will also be on display for the first time.

Club members Bill Buist and George Boyes spent 12 months restoring the tractor, which hadn’t been going for a decade.

If not for the old-fashioned design, you wouldn’t know it was almost a century old.

“I’ve been working with tractors all my life. The steam box was all full of water and rust, I had to dismantle it and clear it out…had to renew all the panels and tin work. Had to make a cowl for the radiator too, that was missing,” Mr Buist said.

“There was water in the two rear cylinders too, we cleaned it up and got it to turn over and run. It ran rather nicely actually, I was surprised. We made it really to look nice, rather than to be movable.

“It’s been in the shed for about three years, just gathering dust, we spent a lot of work on it and now it’ll be on display.”

Entry is free for kids, while adults can enter for just $10, and families for $20. Hot and cold food will be available for purchase on the day.

The event will be held at the Ballan Racecourse Reserve, Racecourse Road, Ballan.

Truck fire closes freeway

By Lachlan Ellis The second truck fire in Gordon in two weeks has thankfully ended without injury, but saw part of the Western Freeway blocked for over 12 hours.

CFA was notified of the incident at 10:38 pm on Thursday 10 February, and crews arrived, along with Victoria Police, to find a B-double trailer on fire just past the on-ramp at Gordon.

“The trailer contained various flammable items. The freeway was closed in both directions for a significant amount of time,” a CFA spokesperson said.

“19 CFA vehicles attended, including tankers and support vehicles, with support also from FRV including a HAZMAT vehicle. The scene was declared under control at 01:12 [Friday morning].”

The spokesperson said the cause is believed to have been a mechanical fault.

“Crews remained on scene for several hours, before handing the scene to EPA.” In a statement on 10 February, the Department of Transport said the Western Freeway was closed “westbound at Ballan-Daylesford Road for repairs”, with “diversions in place via Ballan-Daylesford Road and the Midland Highway adding approximately 30 minutes extra travel time”.

“Motorists are asked to obey traffic management in place. The road will re-open when it’s safe to do so,” the Department’s statement read.

At 11 am on Friday 11 February, the westbound Gordon on-ramp was still closed, while the eastbound lanes had re-opened.

Two heavy haulage vehicles were in attendance to remove the trailers whilst workers continued clearing debris from the freeway well into the Friday afternoon. The freeway was opened to all traffic around 5.00pm.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.

‘Paste Ups’ worth a peek A collaboration between local artists, businesses, and Council has locally produced artwork livening up walls across Moorabool.

The five artworks were all put on walls as part of the ‘Moorabool Paste Ups Program’ in December, depicting memories and connections the artists have with Moorabool, and with humanity as a whole.

One piece of art, titled ‘Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos’, is located in Gordon, on the front wall of Gordons at Gordon. Created by Gordon artist Adam Bennet, the striking blue cockatoo represents “a regular visitor on the back balcony” of Bennet’s apartment.

“Often, I would arrive home to find a flock of these magnificent birds. Immediately, the stress of the day would dissolve, replaced by feelings of joy and connection with nature,” Mr Bennet said.

Ballan and Bacchus Marsh are host to two artworks each – in Ballan, you can find ‘Night Shift’ by Tomas Lineker at Fabulous Flowers – one part of a series Mr Lineker has created “with my spare time after work, mostly at night-time…driven by a fervent desire to find the perfect colour combinations”.

‘Superstellar’ by Min Ray is located at Ballan’s Millrose Quilting & Gallery, a colourful piece symbolising the differences between people that make up a “wonderful world, full of colour, magic and joy”.

In Bacchus Marsh, Anu Patel’s ‘Patterns in Nature’ at Lerderderg Library ties in with the environment of Bacchus Marsh and surrounds, while Liz Thompson’s ‘Supporting front line workers’ at the Bacchus Marsh RSL expresses gratitude for the hard work of frontline workers throughout the COVID-19 pandemic.

The paste up artworks will be up until the end of February, so get out and see them soon as, photos don’t do our local artists’ creations justice.

Rating review rescission rejected

By Lachlan Ellis What its author has called “the longest rescission motion we’ve ever done” has come to an end, with the motion to rescind a community consultation plan failing at Council’s 2 February meeting.

Cr Paul Tatchell’s rescission motion for the ‘Revenue and Rating Plan – Rate Strategy Review – Community Engagement’ was first raised at the Ordinary Meeting of Council (OMC) on 1 December last year.

The Community Engagement motion was mistakenly voted for by Cr Tatchell at the December meeting, and he flagged his intention to rescind the motion – but rescission motions must be lodged 96 hours before an OMC.

rezoning resulting in a value uplift to the land of more than $100,000”.

For land with a taxable value uplift of more than $100,000 but less than $500,000, a tax of 62.5% will apply on the uplift above $100,000, with a 50% tax on any uplift above $500,000.

Whilst Cr Ally Munari expressed frustration about the Rate Strategy, she was also concerned the recission would “halt it and hold it back”.

Cr Ward and Cr Dudzik expressed concerns over what the consequences might be if the rescission motion passed, and the Revenue and Rating Plan was not passed before the State Government deadline, the deadline for Council’s next budget.

The 1 December OMC was the last for 2021, forcing the motion to be heard, at the earliest, at the 2 February OMC.

Council CEO Derek Madden said the report could be completed and adopted within the timeframe, but “we wouldn’t get a perfect alignment between the two processes…but we would still be able to achieve the timelines”.

In his rescission motion, Cr Tatchell explained that he had several concerns regarding the Rate Strategy Review.

In the end, Cr Tatchell’s rescission motion was not seconded by anyone, and thus it failed without a debate.

“We did a lot of briefings before we put together a report that was meant to go out to the public… subsequently the State Government introduced yet another tax called the windfall tax, which will have at the very least, a knock-on effect on the Rating Strategy,” Cr Tatchell said.

The Rate Strategy Review Propositions Paper has therefore gone out to the public as planned, with Virtual Drop-In Sessions to be held on Zoom on Thursday 17 February and Thursday 24 February.

“I think until we get a report on the windfall tax and have it inclusive as part of what goes out to the public, it would be remiss to put it out with some fairly hefty legislation not included in it.”

The windfall tax, which will go into effect on 1 July 2023, is a tax on land “subject to a government

Community feedback is due to be heard at the April 2022 OMC, and a decision will be made at the May 2022 OMC.

Cr Munari said she wanted more rating models to be put to the people of Moorabool, but believed enough time had been spent on the Rate Strategy Review to put it out to the community without amendments.

“I feel like what we’re putting out to the community…I am continually frustrated as well, I want more options for us and the community to have a look at. I agreed with Cr Tatchell’s frustration…I want more options on the table,” she told the Moorabool News.

“At the end of the day, it’s the cards we’ve been dealt. I feel, with the windfall tax…I’m still comfortable where we’re at. I trust Council’s officers, they always do a lot of good research and dig deep to find the answers for us.

“I put my faith in them, and I know that they will give us everything we need to make the decisions that we need to make.”

Cr Tatchell told the Moorabool News it was a shame there was no opportunity to debate the rescission motion.

“The reason we second motions is to have a discussion – win, lose, or draw doesn’t really matter, it’s more about putting it out there so people can see it. I was disappointed…we’re putting a Rating Strategy out there that is incomplete,” he said.

“The question was asked, could Council officers do a report within the timeframe, and the answer was yes, there’d be some pressure to do it… but that’s what we pay them for.

“It’s a State Government timeframe…we’ve seen government after government withdraw or hold back legislation because of changes.

Council should do that, what are you suggesting, we make a bad decision because the State Government says this has to be in by the due date?”

A local bank has splashed some cash this summer, footing the bill for three weeks of kids’ swimming lessons in Ballan.

The Community Bank Ballan Branch paid for the entire VICSWIM Summer Kidz Program this year, which ran from Monday to Friday during January 3 to January 21.

The Bank also covered Council’s entry costs for participants and spectators, making the lessons completely free.

“Without State Government support it’s $100 per week, but with State Government subsidisation it’s $35. Bendigo Bank’s support makes that even better,” VICSWIM CEO Kathy Parton told the Moorabool News.

“Ballan is the first and only Bendigo Bank branch to cover the full costs of the Program.

We’re very grateful for that.”

Volunteer Community Bank Ballan Board Director Barry Sims said swimming’s so important for children.

“They’ve got to learn how to swim and if possible, without the added cost”, he said.

The Summer Kidz Program has been going since 1976, and had 19,000 enrolments across 200 venues this year. However, 140 venues were affected by COVID this year, leaving around 4,000 kids unable to participate in planned lessons.

The Community Bank Ballan Branch spent just under $3000 supporting this year’s program, and has invested over $1.09 million back into the community in its 10-year history of operation.

AGRICULTURE VICTORIA ARE HERE TO HELP Agriculture Victoria has appointed an Agriculture Recovery Team to provide ongoing support to producers and landholders affected by the recent storm and flood to help with their recovery journey.

The Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH) is offering funding for initiatives aimed at connecting and supporting those most at risk in the community after an emergency.

The Agriculture Recovery Team can provide primary producers with information and technical advice on:

The Storm and Flood Community Recovery Funding aims to establish locally led programs to assist groups, individuals and communities impacted by the June 2021 Storm and Floods.

The following costs can be funded under this initiative:

AN UPDATE FROM MOORABOOL SHIRE COUNCIL Moorabool Shire, alongside Hepburn Shire and the City of Ballarat, was impacted by the heavy rain and winds on Wednesday 5 and Thursday 6 January.

So far, council have determined that our farming communities were hit the hardest. Potato, canola, pyrethrum, cereal, fodder crops and many more have been damaged. The full impact of this most recent storm and flood event is still being assessed and council will keep residents informed as this unfolds.

Moorabool Shire Council has awarded three new tenders, improving and building sports facilities in Bacchus Marsh and Ballan, to the tune of $27 million.

On 27 January, Council awarded tenders for a new indoor sports stadium in Bacchus Marsh, a pavilion at Ballan Recreation Reserve and major upgrades at Bacchus Marsh Racecourse Recreation Reserve.

The former tender will be the first stage of the Moorabool Aquatic and Recreation Reserve (MARC), and will feature four indoor courts, meeting rooms, a function space, change rooms, amenities, a car park, an entry road, and landscaping.

Ballarat-based firm AW Nicholson will begin construction on the stadium in March, with construction expected to finish in May 2023. $1.9 million was contributed by the State Government through the Local Sports Infrastructure Fund.

The Ballan Sports Pavilion project will see a brand-new pavilion built at Ballan

Recreation Reserve, featuring femalefriendly change rooms and amenities for players and umpires, a kitchen and canteen, storage facilities and a social room.

WP Contractors will begin construction this month, and are expected to finish in October.

A further $3 million from the Local Sports Infrastructure Fund made the pavilion possible.

Finally, Stage 2 of the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse Recreation Reserve will see hard courts, a car park and entry road, landscaping, and lighting of the sports field and hard courts built, and preparation work for the two grass ovals.

Turf One will be the contractor responsible, with $6.2 million provided by the State Government for Stages 2 and 3 of the project under the Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program ($3.5 million) and the World Game Facilities Fund ($500,000).

Pianos for people to play

By Lachlan Ellis For those of a musical nature, or anyone who might enjoy a song or two over coffee or lunch, a new project from Council is encouraging Mooraboolites to take a moment and enjoy the tunes.

Two pianos decorated by local artists are out on the streets this summer, and will remain available to play until March.

In a time where connectedness is at a premium, Moorabool Shire Council’s ‘Pop-Up Pianos’ project is an opportunity to connect through love of music and art.

Moorabool Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said Council was proud to provide the community with a new way to enjoy being out and about in Moorabool.

“Council officers sourced pianos from the community and set them up in highly visible areas of Ballan and Bacchus Marsh to give the community an opportunity to listen to local musicians. As well as commissioning musicians, Council commissioned local artists to paint each piano,” Cr Sullivan told the Moorabool News.

“The pianos are still stationed in the areas they were set up, and are enjoyed by community members young and old, which is fantastic to see. Funding for this program came from the State Government’s Outdoor Activation initiative.”

“Prior to Christmas I had the privilege of working with a small group of local teenagers painting the piano at McLean Reserve. It was a joy working with the team. It has been a delight to hear and see people of all ages and abilities sit down and play,” Ms Callow said.

The State Government’s COVIDSafe Outdoor Activation Fund supported local councils across Victoria in making physical improvements and providing entertainment to bring outdoor precincts to life, including through the Pop-Up Pianos project.

The project is inspired by British artist Luke Jerram’s ‘Play Me, I’m Yours’ global art piece, which has seen more than 1,900 street pianos installed in 60 cities around the world.

The next round of Council’s Community Grants is coming up, and over $250,000 was given under last year’s grants.

A total of $80,000 is on offer in the March funding round - $60,000 for Community Strengthening Grants, $10,000 for Arts and Culture Grants, and $10,000 for Community Events Grants.

Two online workshops will be held on Wednesday 16 February from 6 – 7 pm, and Thursday 3 March from 1 – 2 pm, on how to write an application.

Rogers Reserve on the radar

By Lachlan Ellis A new report to be prepared by Council’s CEO will look into possible improvements to Rogers Reserve, including a basketball court and cricket pitch.

Cr Rod Ward moved a motion at Council’s 2 February Ordinary Meeting, suggesting that improvements to the reserve on Cairns Drive, Darley, would greatly benefit the community.

“I’ve been super impressed by the work done by Moorabool Shire Council to improve the playground reserves, play spaces, and facilities provided for our residents across the Council in the last few years, I think we’ve done an outstanding job,” Cr Ward said.

“Living in that area of Darley, I see the popularity of Rogers Reserve most weekends. It’s full of picknickers.

There is no barbeque space, there’s aging playground equipment, there’s no shelter…I’m moving this motion to add the upgrade of Rogers Reserve to a similar standard to those other playgrounds we’ve updated recently.”

Cr Ward’s motion requests the report consider the feasibility of a half-wicket cricket pitch, half-court basketball court, play equipment upgrade, barbeque area and shelter, and public toilets.

The motion was seconded by Cr Berry without opposition, and was unanimously passed by Council, except for Cr Dudzik who was absent for much of the meeting due to technical difficulties.

Telford trail out for comment Draft concept plans are up for the planned ‘Telford Park AllAbilities Sculpture Trail’, and Council wants to hear from the community.

Until February 24, Council is accepting feedback on the Bald Hill project plans, which include Halletts Way and Wittick Street entries, a 43-bay car park, 1000+ Steps Trailhead, boardwalk, Telford Park All-Abilities Trail, lookout, and seven sculptures.

The survey can also be taken anonymously, and you can opt in to receive project updates by supplying your email address.

Taking a walk on the wild side

By Lachlan Ellis It’s a conspiracy so absurd, you wouldn’t read about it – except now you can, with a new book from a Moorabool writer delving deep into the sinister cult known as ‘QAnon’.

If you’re not quite sure what QAnon is, you’re not the only one – but local writer Van Badham has been in the belly of the beast, which she says is conning thousands of vulnerable people.

A post asking her Facebook followers about QAnon garnered hundreds of messages, and Ms Badham got into deeper research before writing an article on the conspiracy for The Guardian, which went viral.

She’s devoted the last 12 months to learning more for her book, ‘QAnon and On’, even going undercover in QAnon groups.

What she discovered was shocking.

“I’ve discovered that there are a lot of bad faith political actors in this space, who weaponise people who are in distress for political ends. QAnon believers were very present at the January 6 attack on the Capitol building in the United States…they had been urged to go there by propagandists,” Ms Badham told the Moorabool News.

“People are prone to conspiracy thinking when they’re in distress…obviously, the pandemic has distressed a lot of people. People being cooped up inside [during the pandemic], with the internet…are very vulnerable to manipulation, and there are people willing to manipulate them.

“If you can convince people that Hillary Clinton is an alien lizard or that Joe Biden is a clone…and those are things that people do believe…you can convince them of anything. You can convince them to give you money, you

can convince them to, say, set buildings on fire, you can convince them to riot against democracy,” she said.

The wacky beliefs of QAnon followers include that John F. Kennedy Jr. will come back from the dead, and that a group of cannibalistic pedophiles conspired against Donald Trump’s presidency.

But rather than ridiculing people for believing such a bizarre conspiracy, Ms Badham said she felt sorry for QAnon followers and their loved ones.

“I have sympathy the loved ones and family members who watch people they care about go further and further into this extremist thinking. After January 6, there were people reporting their parents to the FBI, because their parents were trying to take down the government of the United States,” she said.

“You see similar things in Australia, we’ve seen the antilockdown protests here…a lot of people at those were QAnon followers and followers of other conspiracy cults.

The anti-lockdown protest in Melbourne last year was organised by a group of people based in Germany.”

The solution, according to psychologists, is to keep in contact with friends and family who are vulnerable or reclusive.

“A lot of the time, people get enmeshed in these cults because they feel isolated and lonely, and they’re looking for a sense of purpose and connection,” Ms Badham said.

“One of the best things you can do is check in with people, and steer the conversation away from conspiracies and politics. Focus on what’s important like shared positive experiences and memories.”

Closter part of Australian first

By Kendall Jennings In an Australian first, Bacchus Marsh Motorcycle Club hosted the opening round of the 2022 Australian Arenacross series. The Arenacross series incorporated a carnival environment alongside motorcycle racing.

Motorcycle racing has been strongly hit by COVID restrictions, with events cancelled and series shortened. The storms the day before did not hamper preparation or excitement from 370 competitors filling 18 classes from 50cc to 450cc machines of all brands. Around 8000 spectators were lucky enough to pre-book tickets as some patrons were turned away as the event reached the venue cap.

Series promoter Jess Proctor of Protraxx said the series is designed to fill the vital gap between grassroots racing and a professional Supercross championship.

“The response we received from the riders was nothing short of inspiring,” she said.

“The weather certainly threw some challenges at us, but the feedback we’ve had from the riders was that they thoroughly enjoyed the day and the close racing that the track provided. Being our first event, we learnt a lot, and we’re determined that the second stop of the four-round series at Swan

Hill will be even better for both the racers and spectators.”

Ms Proctor said Arenacross racing offers both racers and fans an incredible experience.

“The intense on-track action and quality trackside entertainment can be enjoyed by the whole family, as we help shape the next generation of superstars.”

Local athlete 21-year-old Max Closter and former Ninja Warrior semi-finalist piloted his Kawasaki KX450 to tenth place overall after round one.

Mr Closter said after race one, he was hoping to do better after the fifteenth place.

“I actually did do better finishing tenth and eighth in races two and three,” he said.

“In race one I was hurried at the start, and struggled to get ‘into the zone.’

“You really need a good start in Areanacross; if you get a bad start, it is harder to find your rhythm with people going, double, triple jumping. I was trying to relax, not get frustrated, ride my own race and focus on my technique. The track was really good and so much fun,” he said Mr Closter will be competing in the complete four-round series with the second round of the Australian Arenacross Championship to be held at Swan Hill on February 19.

New firewood collection area rules

Moorabool residents are being advised that changes to firewood collection regulations on public land in Central Victoria take effect on Tuesday 1 March 2022, to help preserve local firewood resources for the future.

Under the new changes, firewood collection from designated areas in state forests within parts of Central Victoria, will be restricted to residents of specific local shires only.

Visitors from the Grampians region and other parts of Victoria will no longer be able to access firewood from state forests in Central Victoria. They will still be able to collect firewood from designated collection areas within their own region.

Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) Forest Planning team leader Amy Groch said the changes will maintain a more sustainable domestic firewood supply for local residents in Central Victoria.

“While firewood is free to collect, supply is not unlimited.

This means firewood needs to be managed responsibly to ensure environmental sustainability,” Ms Groch said.

“These changes aim to ensure that local communities gain greater access to the available firewood this autumn in preparation for winter.

“We want to remind the community that firewood can only be taken from designated collection areas in state forests or parks during approved collection seasons, in Autumn from 1 March to 30 June and Spring from 1 September to 30 November.

“Designated collection areas are selected for a range of reasons including the availability of firewood, community safety, and to protect sites of cultural and environmental significance.”

The permitted Local Government Areas who will have access to firewood from Central Victorian state forests are Buloke, Campaspe, Central Goldfields, Gannawarra, Hepburn, Loddon, Macedon Ranges, Mitchell, Mt Alexander, Northern Grampians, Pyrenees and Strathbogie Shire Councils; City of Greater Bendigo, and Greater Shepparton A list of the Central Victorian state forests with the new restrictions can be found at www.ffm.vic.gov.au/firewood Firewood collectors may be asked to prove their address when collecting firewood. Boost to tackle established pest and weeds On-ground management of problematic pests and weeds will see a significant boost through an Australian Government investment of $20 million, matched by state and territory governments, to maximise reduction and prevention activities across the country.

Minister for Agriculture and Northern Australia David Littleproud said pest animals and weeds pose a significant threat to Australia’s primary production, environment and biodiversity.

“Pests and weeds are a huge and growing problem for Australia’s agriculture and environment,” Minister Littleproud said.

“Projects will reduce the overall burden of pests and weeds through activities such as coordinated control, destruction and removal, including trapping, baiting and culling along with biological control release.”

Senator for Victoria Sarah Henderson said a reduction of pest animals and weeds will lead to more productive and profitable industries and benefit native wildlife and the environment.

“Projects will target nationally significant pest and weed species, such as feral deer, feral pigs, cats, foxes, rabbits, wild dogs and a range of invasive weeds across identified hot spots.”

FAST FACTS • This funding expands on the $29.1 million Supporting Communities Manage Pest Animals and Weeds Program (2021-22 to 2024-25) to deliver better solutions to combat established pest animals and weeds. The total program funding is now $49.1 million.

• The Australian Government investment in established pest animal and weed management programs is more than $330 million since 2015 (2014-15 to 2024-25).

• Nationally, the annual cost of established vertebrate pest animals is estimated to be $800 million and over $4 billion for weeds in terms of production losses and control activities. The cost to the environment hasn’t been calculated but is likely to be higher.

• A 2019 ABARES survey found land managers spent an average of $8,189 annually on pest animal management, up from $7,304 in 2016.

After a bye to start the year, Ballan Brumbies Under 14 girls returned to the court over the weekend against Saints Sky. A scrappy start saw both teams unable to find the basket until Keeley Pelkonen opened the scoring for Saints almost four minutes into the contest, Chloe Newton immediately answering for Ballan after some slick passing.

Despite missing two players and as a result having no bench to lean on, the Brumbies girls showed more energy in defense in the early stages, suffocating Saints offense with only Pelkonen able to create any opportunities for Saints.

Strong rebounding and quick hands on defense saw Ballan get out into the open floor, steals from Addie Jacobs and Ruby McLeod springing Sarah Burton free for layups.

The last eight minutes of the first half saw Ballan’s pressure break the Saints, the Brumbies going on a 10-0 run, Newton and McLeod hitting long range baskets, as Ballan opened up a 20-8 half time lead.

With the score ballooning out to 33-12, the Brumbies lack of depth started to show as the girls intensity finally dropped, Pelkonen and Nevani Woods scoring late baskets for Saints to add some respectability to the scoreboard.

Nonetheless, Ballan ran out comfortable 35-16 winners in a match that they controlled from the early stages.

Majestuoso takes Aurora Australis lead Eight days after his Great Southern Star triumph, Majestuoso was back to his Group 1-winning ways at Tabcorp Park Melton with victory in the Aldebaran Park The Knight Pistol.

The Andy Gath-trained star racked up his fifth elite level success and took up top spot on the Aurora Australis leaderboard with Saturday night’s performance in the timehonoured $50,000 feature.

Driver Kate Gath made a successful mid-race move from back in the field to find the lead and it proved decisive as the six-year-old held off the surge from New Zealander Temporale (Michelle Wallis and Bernie Hackett/Anthony Butt) to win by just over a metre on the line.

Majestuoso zipped home in a closing quarter of 27.4sec for a mile rate of 1:57.8min over the 2240m trip.

The victory took the Majestic Son gelding past Anton Golino-trained mare Im Ready Jet on the Aurora Australis standings and leaves him two points clear heading into the eighth and final leg of the inaugural series.

“We'll run him in a couple of weeks and he can have a little spell,” Kate Gath said.

“It's a $50,000 bonus and money means a lot to (owner) Norm (Jenkin) … hi Norm if you're watching,” she said with a smile.

“Obviously, the horse comes first and that's how we roll, but because he came through (the Great Southern Star) so well we thought we would go in this week. It worked out well.

“He is leading the points now so fingers crossed he can hold on, but time will tell.”

The Aurora Australis winds up with the TAB Australian Trotting Grand Prix at Melton on February 26, with connections of the leading horse then picking up a $50,000 bonus.

Sundons Courage (Chris Angove/James Herbertson) put in another strong display in a big race to finish third, beaten just under 10m.

Damien Burns’ comeback kid Youaremy Sunshine produced another of the highlights during Saturday night’s meeting with victory in the Nevele R Stud Pace.

The win was the horse’s second since returning from a long injury-enforced spell and sets the platform for some bigger and better challenges in the future.

The triumph was one of two on the night for driver Chris Alford, who also scored with Dean Braun-trained mare Im Off N Gone in the Villawood Properties Pace.

Kate Gath claimed the other double of the meeting, with victory in the TAB Long May We Play Trot aboard Ymbro Wasted.

The squaregaiter is trained by Gath’s father Peter Thompson and was having his second start following a short New South Wales campaign with David Aiken.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The Centre conducted a twilight meet on Friday evening where all athletes participated in four events. Bridie Shanahan broke her own Discus Centre record with a new distance of 31.21 metres. Lachlan Simons, Noah McKay, Elise Holland, Charlotte Jacobson and Lucas Priestly were awarded PB Stars of the Week.

There were also 23 BMLAC athletes representing the Centre at the Western Metro Region Track & Field Carnival held at John Landy Field, Geelong.

Bacchus Marsh athletes competed against other athletes from Altona, Brimbank, Corio, Geelong, Gisborne, Melton, South Melbourne, South Coast, Werribee and Williamstown.

The Bacchus Marsh Centre won 6 Gold, 10 Silver and 9 Bronze Medals.

Skyla Berryman, in her first competition at Region Track & Field level came home from the meet with three Gold medals, winning the Under 9 70m, 100m and 200m events.

Nelson Banigo continues his sensational form on the track winning Gold after dominating performances in the Under 13 100m and 200m events. Under 10 athlete Elliot Banigo won his 200m event claiming the Gold medal.

After winning their events Skyla, Nelson and Elliot have now automatically qualified for the State Championships to be held on March 12 & 13 at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park.

Little Athletics Victoria will announce further progressions next week and with a large number of 2nd and 3rd place-getters, Bacchus Marsh should be well represented at the State Championships.

Little Athletics will return to Saturday morning competition next week at Masons Lane Reserve commencing at 8.15am.

The bowling innings started well however the players appeared uncharacteristically flat in the field with basic mistakes and a lack of desperation and awareness allowing the opposition to win the game.

Co-captains Tom Norman and James Burton both picked up a wicket each. Clover McIlwaine and Angus Britt then entered the attack to finish off the opposition, Angus with a beautiful delivery hitting the top off the stump and destroying the bail and Clover with an LBW. Brother and sister batting then combined when James and Sarah Burton resumed their innings putting on a patient batting innings to safely guide the team to victory. After turning 13 the previous day, Sarah Burton embraced the challenge to bring up a new highest score and raise her bat for a well-deserved maiden half century scoring 51 not out.

The team have a bye next round and look forward to the final round against Brown Hill.

Batting - David Gardiner 19*, Ryan Lister 17*, Lachie Snaith 16, Heath Doherty 14 Ballan were sent into field and the young Darley openers got their team off to the best possible start racing to 0-46. An excellent spell of bowling by Lachie Snaith dragged Ballan back into the game, well supported by Ben Loughnane at the other end with Ballan tightening the screws through the middle overs to have Darley in real trouble.

Consistent wickets fell by the Ballan bowlers with Hayden Micallef and David Gardiner amongst the action. Darley was dismissed for 100.

Ballan needed 101 and looked in real trouble at 6/62.

Jack McGregor was a rock throughout the middle overs and gave Ballan a chance then young gun Ryan Lister and classy veteran David Gardiner came to the crease.

This saw them post a great partnership to see Ballan reach the total 6 down.

A second wicket partnership stand of 87 runs saw Newton reach 48 before being caught however, Costello continued his great run of form with the bat finishing on 77 not out to end Ballan’s innings on 5/197, their highest score of the season.

The spin twins – John Costello and David Leach came into the attack after Mack Popple produced a stunning in-swinging delivery to knock over one of the opening bats.

Lions rue opportunity lost Darley Cricket Club – By Todd Whelan A dramatic batting collapse has proven the catalyst behind the Lions 14 run loss on the road against East Ballarat at the weekend.

Needing 189 runs for victory the reigning dual Premiers recovered from 3/19 to be in a winning position at 4/150 before unravelling to be all out for 174. Captain Bradley Barnes (80) near single handily arrested the momentum with support crew Brodie Ward (24) and Drew Locke (33) but fell short as the Lions lost their last six wickets for 24, including 4/4 to close out the innings.

Coach Brian Wheelahan was left to rue every bit of missed opportunity in the aftermath.

“Poor decisions towards the back end really cost us,” he said.

“Our lack of match awareness with the bat allowed East Ballarat back into it.”

Never to dwell on the negative for too long, Wheelahan was quick to acknowledge the efforts of Barnes especially, clearly his best knock of the season.

“Barnesy proved he can be as damaging as anyone, recapturing his form and finally getting some reward for himself,” he said.

“He really built himself up for this one in what was a true Captain’s knock.”

Wheelahan endorsed the returns of Brodie Ward and Drew Locke, the only other Lion’s batsmen to reach double figures.

“Brodie and Drew’s knocks were another positive,” he said.

“Both batted with maturity and sensibility but like Barnesy, would be disappointed not being there at the end.”

According to Wheelahan his bowlers did a good job restricting the home side to 188 after they looked 200 bound, at one stage cruising at 2/120.

“While we were inconsistent by our own standards early, the bowlers responded well through the middle and latter stages of the innings,” he said.

“Hasi (4/37) and Khwaja (2/13) were the pick of our bowlers.”

Wheelahan is hopeful Saturday’s loss proves a timely wake-up call for his players ahead of the four remaining games leading up to finals.

“We’re a proud group – I’m confident we can bounce back quickly against Mount Clear this weekend,” he said.
