They’ve been roaming Moorabool’s main streets during December and if you missed them… you better watch out, you better not cry, you better not pout, cos I’m telling you why – there is still one last opportunity.

Father Christmas and his hard-working elf will be roaming Main Street Bacchus Marsh on Christmas Eve, this Friday 24 December from 10.30am-1.30pm.

Moorabool Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said the roaming Christmas features were part of Council’s 2021 program of activity for ‘Yule Love Christmas in Moorabool’.

“We’ve had great anecdotal feedback that the Santa visits were well received,” he said. “… which is why we had them again this year, to continue to bring joy (and local expenditure) to our town centre’s in the lead up to Christmas.”

This is the second year running that the festive visits have taken place around the Shire’s town centre’s, along with the return of the Shire’s giant Christmas trees.

Father Christmas receives help from the Elf (Lana Hughes) whilst in Ballan, spreading lots of ‘Merry’ to children and families around Moorabool.

Say hello to Father Christmas, and make sure he knows how good you’ve been this year and what’s on your wish list, this Friday 24 December in Bacchus Marsh, 10.30am-1.30pm.

Local papers “essential” Conducted in July and August this year, a survey has found that a majority of non-local newspaper readers still believe the papers are “an essential service for the community”.

Conducted as part of ‘The Local News Innovation Project’ – a partnership between Deakin, RMIT, Country Press Australia (CPA), and the Australian Government – the survey asked 407 Facebook users in four areas their thoughts on local newspapers.

‘Exploring the social – A report on Facebook users who don’t read local newspapers’ was published on Tuesday 14 December, and revealed a number of interesting statistics.

Despite not being local newspaper readers, 64.5 per cent of respondents said they found a printed local paper an essential service, with almost half (48 per cent) saying if they ever did read a local paper, they would do so in print, rather than online (33 per cent) or on social media (13 per cent).

Participants also showed resistance to the idea of paying for local news, with 64.5 per cent not paying for any news and information, but said they would engage if it was free.

“News should be free to read, and newspapers should make their profit from advertisements,” a 50-year-old female survey participant said. “[Don’t] disappear behind a paywall. I can only access headlines. I refuse to pay for news that I used to have free access to,” a 63-yearold female from Victoria said.

A strong sentiment for media diversity was also observed in the findings, with 73 per cent of respondents favouring locally owned newspapers profiting from local news production, versus 14 per cent preferring “no profit”, 7 per cent “Facebook and Google” and 6 per cent “national and international news companies”.

Deakin University Associate Professor Kristy Hess is leading the research, and said the findings reinforced the passion for print uncovered from a previous survey of local newspaper readers.

"The fact that social media users examined here (in the latest survey) also indicate a preference for print is perhaps especially profound,” Dr Hess said.

Premier Daniel Andrews said in 2019, ‘Local papers are the lifeblood of local communities’ - Helen Tatchell "Many participants highlighted that the absence of a home-delivery service or easy way to access the paper created an impediment to accessing the physical copy. They also indicated that they resisted paying for local news and would engage if it were free.

"This resonates with findings from our first survey of newspaper readers – that is, the existence of a culture of 'free' where people believe local news content should be readily available without cost to audiences."

CPA Executive Director, Bruce Morgan, said he was unsurprised by the results, which he believes reinforce regional communities’ feelings about news.

"It is not just about the survival of local independent (newspaper) businesses, but that it is fundamental to community wellbeing, and to basic democratic notions of accountability within those communities," Mr Morgan said.

"Issues around accessibility and cost are also not surprising and reflect swings in community expectation in recent generations.

Most independent publishers are adapting to that, having learned from the mistakes of the big corporate players who are now deserting the regions.”

The three-year project has been funded by the Australian Research Council, with almost 8 million people – close to 30 per cent of Australia’s population – living outside major cities in rural and regional areas.

Dr Hess said that the voices of everyday people, like those in the surveys, are often missing in policy discussion about local media’s future.

LOCAL EDITOR RESPONDS The Moorabool News Editor Helen Tatchell said the survey revealed no surprises and was pleased with the message that came from it.

“Keeping communities connected is the whole purpose of any free local independent news publication, and I have been championing these sentiments for years,” she said.

Premier Daniel Andrews relayed an important message at the Victorian Country Press Association annual conference in 2019.

“He said to our members that ‘Local papers are the lifeblood of local communities’, and during covid we were advised that regional newspapers are considered to be essential services,” Ms Tatchell said.

Whilst social media has become another platform of news and information, Ms Tatchell said you must remain cautious of what you read on the internet.

“There are quite a few online news platforms now, but you have to ask, “who are

they?” You cannot rely on the news you read online to be factual and credible,” she said.

“COVID certainly knocked the industry around, especially for the free publications who rely on paid advertising revenue to produce and distribute out to households.

“I am pleased this survey reinforces the message to support local, shop local.

To lose your local newspaper would be disastrous for any community, and there were many shut down by the major players before COVID even took a strong hold, some were daily publications.

“The Moorabool News will not be going down the path of a paywall as our purpose is to ensure the good people of Moorabool are informed, engaged, on all matters pertaining to the Moorabool area, for free.”

Rail line perfect for trail

By Lachlan Ellis A local cyclist is campaigning for a recreational trail to be established along a disused rail line, and Council has shown interest.

Millbrook resident Gerard White would like to see a 13-kilometre stretch of land in Dunnstown, which had railway lines and sleepers removed earlier this year, turned into a trail for walkers, cyclists, and tourists.

With more people walking and cycling during the pandemic, Mr White believes the trail could boost not just health and wellbeing, but tourism and local spending too.

“It’d bring people and their money, simple as that. You could have drop-off points at Wallace, Bungaree, and Dunnstown.

The Wallace Hotel would be a perfect place for people to park their cars and do the walk up to Bungaree, or from Wallace to Millbrook and back,” he told the Moorabool News.

“It’d go from the old Millbrook line crossing, basically up to Dunnstown. Because it goes as far as Dunnstown, there’s a few back roads into Ballarat that are unsealed … people would be able to ride their bike from Ballarat out through the back of Dunnstown or Warrenheip, and connect up with the trail.”

Mr White also believes providing a bicycle-friendly track between towns would provide a safer alternative to cycling on roads shared with cars.

“It’d be so safe – a lot of people are apprehensive about cycling on bitumen, because of the speed of cars and trucks on the road. But if they ride on bike trails and gravel roads, it takes that dangerous aspect out of the equation,” he said.

Mr White said he’d hate to see the line go into disrepair and become overgrown with weeds and blackberries.

“But if it’s not used in the right way, that’s the way it’ll go.”

Council has had several conversations with local residents interested in the project, and plans to engage VicTrack, which owns the land, to find out any plans they have for the area.

More room for mushies

By Lachlan Ellis A nursery rhyme asks Mary “how does your garden grow”?

She replies, “with silver bells, and cockle shells, and pretty maids all in a row”.

But that is not how you grow mushrooms.

Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas visited Parwan Valley Mushrooms last Wednesday, to announce funding through the Agriculture Resilience and Recovery Program and, saw exactly how they are grown.

Stacked in warehouse style floor to ceiling dirt box shelving, the mushrooms are prolific when coupled with darkened indoor temperature-controlled humidity and a special compost. There are 12-rooms altogether with each room producing around 25 tonne over six weeks, equating to 50 tonne per week.

The Moorabool mushroom grower will benefit from the State Government support, allowing it to automate part of its operations and expand its facility.

Representing Council, Moorabool’s Deputy Mayor Cr Tonia Dudzik said they’re very pleased the State Government has provided the grant funding.

“This funding will provide for operational improvements to support the continued operation and growth of Parwan Valley Mushrooms.”

Cr Dudzik also said the Parwan Employment Precinct will provide for a range of industrial, agri-business, and aviation land uses, and build on a number of successful existing business within the precinct, such as Parwan Valley Mushrooms.

“Once complete, the proposed new precinct is expected to create 1,500 full time jobs, which is amazing for the Shire,” she said.

A joint venture between Mecrus Pty Ltd and Perfection Fresh Australia, Parwan Valley Mushrooms processes up to 50 metric tonnes of mushrooms a week – four per cent of the Australian market, with 30 per cent of their produce sold to a large supermarket chain.

It is located within the Parwan Employment Precinct, a

2880-hectare site designed to boost local agriculture and agribusiness, that is expected to create up to 1500 full-time jobs over six years.

Ms Thomas said the investment was timely, with the COVID pandemic highlighting how important domestic food production is.

“One thing that COVID taught us, is that all nations needed to look at what they could and could not do within their own borders. It was a wake-up call to what we could produce, because all our supply chains were disrupted,” Ms Thomas said.

“Here in Victoria, we are in an enviable position as a net

exporter of our primary produce, but we need to keep it that way. We need to do all we can to continue to grow agriculture, so that we can continue Victoria’s very important role in feeding the world.

“Through the Agriculture Resilience and Recovery Program, we have been able to support Parwan Valley Mushrooms to purchase new high-tech automated equipment that will help manage the workforce in a more COVID-safe way, ensuring workers are distributed effectively. It’s also about investing in technology that takes out some of the more labour-intensive roles, allowing the workforce to be used in other areas that require more human capital.”

Minister Thomas was asked by the Moorabool News about the still possible threat of toxic tunnel spoil coming to Bacchus Marsh.

“The decision has been made for the soil to be stored safely and securely at Bulla,” she responded.

Mecrus Managing Director, Barry Richards, said the funding would help the business adapt to new developments in the mushroom market, and add extra COVID safety.

“The grant we’re getting is contributing towards an expansion on our pre-packing here predominantly. When we started the farm almost 10 years ago, we didn’t plan to do any pre-packing. But the world is changing, and we need to keep up with that,” he said.

“We now do 40 per cent of our production into pre-pack.

There are 106 employees here that are all full-time, and that’s been one of our company philosophies – that our people are full-time employees and part of our family business.”

The white cup mushrooms are grown locally, whilst the swiss brown variety are grown at Avernel, and the strawberries in glasshouses in Gippsland.

Minister Thomas was joined for a tour of the facility by local State MPs Steve McGhie (Melton) and Michaela Settle (Buninyong), alongside Moorabool Councillors Tonia Dudzik, Ally Munari and Moira Berry.

Earlier this year, the Parwan Employment Precinct received $2.7 million from the State Government’s Building Works package for a city gate gas connection.

VCAT ruling disappoints

By Lachlan Ellis Council’s rejection of a planning application in June has been overturned by VCAT, and Council remains concerned of the impact the development could have.

The original application was made at Council’s Ordinary Meeting on 2 June, with 75 dwellings planned on the corner of Gisborne Road and Clifton Drive, Bacchus Marsh.

Council’s planning department expressed its concerns over a variety of issues such as traffic, a narrow access point, parking, and noise impacts.

Council unanimously rejected the application, but after a three-day VCAT hearing in August, the development will now go ahead, with conditions.

On 14 December, Council issued a media release expressing its frustration.

“The applicant lodged an appeal for failure to make a determination, as Council officers were trying to secure an improved outcome for the site. After the applicant lodged the appeal, Council determined it would not support the application,” Council CEO Derek Madden explained.

“Council attended the hearing and had legal and planning experts representing Council… VCAT has made the decision to approve the application,” he said.

As a result of Council’s presence at the hearing, 18 per cent of the site was dedicated to Council for the Aqualink cycling/ pedestrian network without cost (as opposed to the required 5 per cent under the Subdivision Act), and six dwellings were reduced, for a total of 69.

In addition, at least eight dwellings on the eastern boundary will be single storey as opposed to double storey, and sound acoustic treatment and landscaping will be improved on the original plans.

Despite the conditions, East Ward Councillor David Edwards told the Moorabool News he was “incredibly disappointed” in VCAT’s decision.

“From my perspective, it’s quite disappointing, as there were many aspects such as parking requirements, and the lack of size of roads in the area. If we’re going to get these high-intensity developments, and VCAT’s going to overturn every Council decision without understanding the context of the local area, that’s pretty disappointing,” Cr Edwards said.

“It frustrates me that we go through quite an extensive process, yet VCAT can just overturn it. I thought Council were elected to make these decisions on behalf of the community, understand local context.”

Cr Edwards said he was “absolutely” concerned the decision could set a precedent for developers bypassing Council decisions through VCAT. “Why does Council spend literally hundreds of thousands of dollars going through planning processes? I understand there needs to be a right of appeals, but this is a very unique development in Bacchus Marsh, the likes of which we haven’t seen, to be honest,” he said.

During the hearing, VCAT said the site at 101 Gisborne Road is “earmarked for increased density”, and defined the site as an “island location”, which Council says it “does not agree with”.

Trees targeted in attack Vandals have struck in the quiet rural township of Bungaree, and it comes with a cost.

Around 23 trees have suffered damage that Council’s Parks and Gardens crew planted over the past two years.

“Unfortunately, with this Bungaree incident, there are a number of trees snapped off and the trees left with stem damage will have to be removed,” a Council spokesperson told the Moorabool News.

The cost for the damage is just under $6000 and approximately $250 per tree.

“This cost is taking in to account the initial planting costs and the ongoing maintenance and watering applications given so far.”

The incident has been reported to the police and Council is asking for your help.

Complaints during election skyrocket

The Local Government Inspectorate has seen a sharp increase in complaints, due mainly to last year’s council elections.

The Inspectorate issued its annual report this month, with a total of 1164 complaints assessed, and 51 investigations completed, during 2020-21.

The bulk of these complaints, 848 in total, were sent in during the general council elections held in October 2020.

It was a significant jump not just from 2019-20 (272 complaints), but also from the last election year in 2016-17, in which 576 complaints were assessed by the Local Government Inspectorate.

Chief Municipal Inspector, Michael Stefanovic AM, praised Inspectorate staff for handling a record number of complaints during an extremely busy election period, hampered by the limitations of COVIDSafe work practices.

“A robust integrity system requires accountability and transparency, and the past year was challenging in that many council decisions were not as open for public scrutiny, despite the efforts of councils to live-stream meetings and move many functions online,” Mr Stefanovic said.

“We saw a significant increase in complaints about social media and online activities during the elections and this has helped identify further opportunities to strengthen legislation around the rules and definitions of electoral material.”

During 2020-21, the Local Government Inspectorate issued 139 warnings for election matters and 25 for non-election matters, used coercive powers on 50 occasions to obtain documents or interview people, and interviewed 28 individuals in relation to matters under investigation.

Scrapbook contains history

By Lachlan Ellis A locally published book shines a light on the history of the ‘Bungeeltap’ property south of Ballan, with hundreds of pages of photos and information spread over two volumes.

Arthur Ranken compiled and published ‘The Bungeeltap Scrapbook’, which he said was a passion project that had been years in the making.

“It explains the development of the Ballan area from day go. Cowie, Stead and Von Steiglitz came up the East Moorabool River and found open timber grassland, and decided that would be a good place to graze their livestock. Bungeeltap was originally 30,000 acres, and extended from the Moorabool River across to the EgertonBallark Road, up towards the Egerton-Ballan Road,” Mr Ranken told the Moorabool News.

“My parents owned Bungeeltap from 1944 to 1984, and took it from 32 bales of wool a year to 260 bales of wool a year,” he said.

Mr Ranken said the Scrapbook took about eight years to fiddle with.

“The current owner asked if I would put down a few notes on the history that I knew

of the property, but I knew a lot more than just the period my parents had it.”

While the intention of the Scrapbook was to document the history of the area, Mr Ranken said it might make a good Christmas stocking filler for Moorabool’s history buffs.

“I was always fascinated with the growth of the property and incorporated through the book, you’ll find at the beginning of the chapters, I’ve given a new set of figures for what the property was carrying and how many bales of wool were produced,” he said.

“We always enjoyed recording the development of the property. Any new thing that was done tended to get photographed, you can look back on it and have a bit of fun seeing how the place did develop.

“Some people might like the idea of giving it as a Christmas present. But my intention with it was to document the history…in 50 years’ time I won’t be around, others with historical knowledge won’t be around, so it’s important to document these things now.”

At each of Victoria's 79 local councils, local government workers deliver essential services that we rely on every day. From road workers to librarians, emergency management specialists, aged and disability care workers, and the workers who are up collecting our bins and recycling while most of us are still in bed, local government workers keep our communities running.

I remember when it was the done thing to put out a bottle of beer or two for the garbos collecting the rubbish. It was a genuine gesture of thanks to workers we didn't often see and maybe didn't even know.

The work of waste collection has changed a lot with skilled workers driving high-tech vehicles and collecting bins at a rate that the fittest waste collection workers would have struggled to match when bins were manually grabbed off the kerb and tipped into a truck.

But the work is just as important, and the workers performing it are just as committed to doing the best job they can.

So even if it's not with a bottle of beer, say a big thank you to waste collection workers this Christmas by giving them a friendly wave in recognition of the critically important work they do.

Dear Editor, This Christmas will be tough for the 49,000 Victorians who lost their job in October and for small business owners, like those in hospitality and accommodation, that are still desperately struggling to fill staffing rosters.

News last week week from the Federal Liberal and Nationals Government of a $103 billion rebound in our national economy is an early Christmas present we all benefit from.

But it’s a stark contrast to the recent news of the ballooning $162 billion debt hole in the Victorian economy.

Victoria risks being left behind without new, bold ideas to set our state on track to recover and rebuild.

The Victorian Liberals and Nationals believe that restoring our state’s crown as the nation’s manufacturing powerhouse is a crucial step towards this goal.

Three decades ago, manufacturing employment accounted for about 17.2 per cent of our state’s jobs market.

At the end of August 2021, that had sunk to 8.4 per cent.

The COVID pandemic is just one contributor to this decline.

Investment in the private sector to assist in job creation is what the Liberal and National parties do best.

That is why at this critical time, we will make it a priority to recover and rebuild our manufacturing sector with a $2.5 billion Rebuilding Jobs, Bringing Manufacturing Home Fund.

It will create thousands of jobs, provide huge certainty for our supply chains that are currently lacking and give career choices to young people, particularly those outside of Melbourne with a minimum of $1 billion to be spend in regional Victoria.

Globally, manufacturing is transforming rapidly, and Victoria must keep up.

A vibrant manufacturing sector is critically important to help our state recover and rebuild.

Rate the rating strategy … next year

By Lachlan Ellis Rates are always a hot topic, and while Council’s power to change them is not absolute, it will seek community feedback next year.

Council is conducting a Rate Review to form part of the 2022/23 Revenue and Rating Plan, and as part of the review, it will consult with the community.

The Rate Strategy Review Community Engagement proposal was initially moved by Cr Edwards at Council’s 1 December Ordinary Meeting, then seconded by Cr Tatchell, and supported unanimously by Council.

However, Cr Tatchell lodged his intention to do a rescission motion later in the meeting, due to confusion from the meeting briefly running out of order, and his intention to present an alternate motion.

The motion before the Rate Strategy Review Community Engagement proposal was accidentally skipped, causing some confusion, and Cr Tatchell was unable to put forward his alternate motion.

“With respect Mr Mayor, I think we’re missing 14.2 (the Rate Strategy Review Community Engagement)…were we out of order, Mr Mayor?”

Cr Tatchell asked.

“No, I accidentally jumped 14.1…we went back to 14.1 after dealing with 15.1,” Mayor Cr Sullivan replied.

“On that basis, I’ll just have to note that I’ll be rescinding the Rating Strategy then. I was out of order in terms of my documents with yours,

I did have an alternate motion that needed to be foreshadowed.”

Cr Tatchell’s rescission motion must be lodged 96 hours before Council’s next Ordinary Meeting, which will be held early February 2022 due to the Christmas break – meaning the Rate Strategy Review will not go to consultation before then.

The original proposal contains three rating models to be put to the people of Moorabool: • Option 1 - Make no change to the current differential categories and associated rating levels.

• Option 2 - Decrease the farmland differential from 78% to a range between 70% and 65% and extractive industries from 312% to a range between 280% and 260% of general rates and make no change to the other differential categories.

• Option 3 - Introduce a municipal charge of between $100 and $200 and make no change to the current differential categories and associated rating levels.

The proposal also makes clear that while rate categories, level of categories, and municipal charges can be altered by Council, the value of rate revenue and valuations of land are out of Council’s hands.

If the motion is approved next year, it will allow online comments through Council’s ‘Have Your Say’ site, in-person meetings with consultants at drop-in sessions, and have a report prepared for Council, before the 2022/23 Revenue and Rating Plan can be approved.

Property Valuations The Valuer General Victoria is the sole Valuation Authority for Victorian Local Government. From 1 July 2019 annualised valuations will occur.

How are Valuations derived and applied?

To determine property values throughout the municipality, a qualified valuer is appointed by the Valuer General Victoria.

The valuation assesses the amount a property would sell for at a specific date. The latest property sales, rental data, land type, buildings and their condition as well as other property improvements are also analysed as part of the valuation process.

A profile of value levels for each area and property type in the municipality is then constructed and applied to individual properties.

What do the Valuations mean?

The annual rate notice provides three types of valuations and a brief explanation of each is as follows: Site Value = Value of the land only (excluding all improvements) Capital Improved Value (CIV) = Total market value of the land including buildings and all other improvements.

Net Annual Value (NAV) = Current value of a property’s net annual rent. By law, NAV must be at least 5% of the CIV (EG: Gross annual rent less all outgoings) Can I object to my Valuation?

A person aggrieved by a valuation of any land made by or for Council may lodge a written objection with Council on any one or more of the grounds set out in Part III, Division 3, Section 17 of the Valuation of Land Act (VLA) 1960.

Beware when buying a Board prepares for second-hand car future growth You might think you’re getting a bargain on a second-hand car, but potential buyers have been warned to pump the brakes and check a used car’s history – or risk an expensive mistake.

More than 12,500 cars are reported as stolen in Victoria each year, and with used vehicle prices increasing by 14.3 per cent this November compared to last year according to Moody Analytics, now is a tempting time to sell.

The National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council (NMVTRC) has released a list of the top five most Photo – Unbounce.com stolen vehicle models from October 2020 to October 2021: the Holden Commodore VE MY06_13, Nissan Pulsar N15 MY95_00, Ford Ranger PX MY11+, Toyota Hilux MY05_11, and Nissan Navara D22 MY01_1.

In the last financial year alone, more than 247 older model Holden Commodores have been stolen from Victorian streets.

In the 12 months to October, there were 12,651 incidents of car theft in Victoria, 26.5 per cent of the total thefts in the state.

Rafe Berding is head of Check the Car, which performs a variety of checks on cars’ history, said buyers who don’t do written-off and stolen vehicle checks, risk losing thousands of dollars.

“Buying a car should be an easy thing to do; however, those looking for a vehicle should be very wary. We know car rebirthing and cloning happens to thousands of stolen vehicles each year, so drivers need to take steps to ensure they aren’t purchasing something that isn’t theirs,” Mr Berding said.

Drivers can also avoid long term mechanical issues from written-off vehicles and more by doing a little research before purchasing.

“We regularly hear horror stories where a buyer has had their car towed, all because it still technically belonged to the bank, and the previous owner failed to pay their bills.”

Mr Berding said prospective owners could check a vehicle’s official status by simply entering a plate registration or vehicle identification number (VIN) on the Vicroads website - www. vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration

The board has been declared for 2022 and one Bacchus Marsh local has been elected for a second term.

Adrian Bettio was returned as chair of the Ballarat Football Netball League for 2022, having already been in the position during 2021, at last week’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) with consistency the key moving forward.

Among the items addressed at the AGM was the financial standing of the league with a pleasing report that a profit was achieved through a disrupted 2021 season. “This provides a sound base for what is hoped to be a full season of competition in 2022,” a league statement read.

Bec Crosbie-Doube is a new addition to the board as senior netball director, providing a diverse range of views with now three female board members, one the league is proud of.

The statement said with all board members being re-elected, a sense of stability and strong leadership will continue, as the league works through the next period of growth to cater for increased participation.

“A strategic plan is being undertaken by the league that will determine the shape of competitions and planning for the short to medium future of the league, given the growth in participation and the need to cater for players wanting to be of the Ballarat FNL.”

Dawn Lewin first became involved with Bacchus Marsh netball through her two young daughters in 1970, who played on Saturdays across Bacchus Marsh and Melton districts.

Ms Lewin told the Moorabool News she had loved every minute of being the BMNA’s Treasurer, and though she had “wanted to go for 50 years”, it was time to have a rest and pass the role on to someone new.

“I love being at the netball…when I first went there in the 70s, it was only on the weekends, there was no Monday or Wednesday games.

There was no indoor stadium either, they played in the cold and the rain…it’s gone leaps and bounds since then,” she said.

She assisted with game day set-ups before becoming the Treasurer of the Bacchus Marsh Netball Association (BMNA) in 1977, a role she filled until November this year.

Dawn and her husband Fred also helped with all the behind-the-scenes tasks that make netball possible, including keeping ice packs cold, providing food for umpires and committee members, keeping an eye on little ones while their parents were playing, and washing an endless number of bibs.

Dawn and her family, including her sister Ruth Tudball, played a huge role in getting indoor netball courts built in Bacchus Marsh, with fundraising beginning in 1985.

Local businesses were contacted, secondhand netball equipment was sold, and knitted items were put on sale at fundraising stalls, alongside cakes – including Dawn’s famous sponge.

The current indoor stadium was built in 1993, and the BMNA was able to use $40,000 from the fundraising to construct the upstairs seating area in 1997.

Dawn was a deserving recipient of a Citizen of the Year award in 1996, and a State Distinction for the Central West Zone from Netball Victoria in 2008.

Since the indoor stadium opened, Dawn has attended Monday junior games and Wednesday senior games from the first game to the last, to supervise and undertake her duties as Treasurer. Though that meant missing out on her favourite TV show, Home and Away, she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Dawn’s connection to the Bacchus Marsh netball scene will continue through her grandchildren on the committee, and her great grandchildren who have begun playing at the BMNA. But after a remarkable 45 years, her own time on the committee has come to a close.

Ms Lewin said she really enjoyed her time at the BMNA. “I also worked at St. Vincent de Paul too in the shed, and between Vinnies and the BMNA I got the Citizen of the Year Award.

That was a real shock, I didn’t expect anything from it, I just enjoyed doing it,” she said.

“My husband when he was alive always used to say ‘Look, it’s time you took a rest’, but I liked doing it, so I kept going. I’m going to miss it like hell.”

The BMNA is now seeking teams and players for the 2022 season, which is due to commence from Monday 7 February for juniors, and Wednesday 9 February for women’s seniors. Lions collapse on the road Darley Cricket Club – By Todd Whelan For the second time in as many seasons, flag fancies Darley have returned empty handed on the road against ‘underdogs’ Naps-Sebas following an upset four wicket loss at the weekend.

And, if not for star batting allrounder Danza Hyatt, the scorecard could read a whole lot worse for the Lions after they were bowled out for 155 in a tick over 45 overs. Hyatt smashed 83 (112) including four boundaries and a token maximum, was the first man in, and 178 minutes later, the last man out. It was vintage Hyatt, and every bit patient by his standards. The former BCA MVP just couldn’t find enough support, let alone the strike as the Lions batsmen struggled to rotate. Hyatt, for batting the entire Lions innings, spent near 60 per cent of his time at the non-strikers end, leaving Lions fans left to ponder how many (runs) were ‘left out there’.

Ironically, the match resembled history repeating on occasions as only four Lions batsmen could reach double figures in their corresponding fixture last season (Rd 6, 2020/21 Darley 8/127, lost by 1 run).

“Their opening bat smashed us to all parts,” he said.

“But when 0/89 became 4/100 we thought we were in with a chance, but credit ‘Naps’, they were able to see it out.”

Wheelahan believes the Christmas break for will be advantageous for his group.

“I think the break for us has come at a good time,” he said.

“We’re clearly below our best at the moment and I feel we could deal with a timely freshen up, both mentally and physically.”

While there is always natural concern in the aftermath of loss, Wheelahan is pretty excited about the club’s prospects moving forward.

“Fortunately, we’re still in a good position (2nd) to give it a real shake in the New Year,” he said.

“We’re (playing) barely out of second gear at the moment - just how much more improvement we have in us will be up to the group, how we prepare and our execution on game-day.”

The Lions are expected to have under rated opening seamer Benny Longhurst and frugal left armer Mitch Ward, back for the club’s top two clash against Lake Wendouree when the competition resumes on January 8 in the New Year.

“Those two should be right,” Wheelahan said.

“But it’s going to take more than just inclusions and our best on paper to play our best cricket,” he said.

Supreme cup win

By Michael Howard (HRV) Supreme Dominator announced himself among the trots’ elite with a bold late strike to capture the Cranbourne Pacing Cup and gift his trainer and driver their richest wins.

Reinsman James Herbertson tagged on to Grand Circuit winning mare Amazing Dream’s back and then let down in the sprint to the line to capture the $75,000 Group 2 for trainer Joe Pace, celebrating with a hearty salute.

“He’s a lovely horse, he’s done a super job,” Herbertson told TrotsVision. “I think it was only six or seven starts back here he broke the track record in a country class race. To go as far as he has in such a short amount of time is a credit to the horse and a credit to Joe as well.”

For Pace, the victory far outshadows his previous high watermark – the $30,000 race wins by Rock N Roll Chapel and Diamond Party – while for 21-year-old Herbertson it also goes to the top of the pile, eclipsing his $50,000 Australasian Trotting Championship win with Savannah Jay Jay. “Watching Gav (Lang) and Chris (Alford) battle it out every year in these sort of races, I always wanted to win country cups more than probably the main races really,” Herbertson said. “I’m living the dream at the moment, to be 21 and doing it – I never thought it would be happening this early if ever.”

Herbertson and Supreme Dominator had to show pace, then patience and then pace again to claim the coveted Group 2, being quick out from gate one to hold out Bettor Be The Bomb and then handing up when Amazing Dream came knocking.

It was then a matter of letting the 2555-metre classic play out, and opportunity knocked with Amazing Dream doing work to get to the front and key rivals Copy That and General Dodge three-wide for a significant stint.

“The speed early was nice,” Herbertson said. “(Anthony Butt on Amazing Dream) did a bit of work early and then (Chris Svanosio on Copy That) was doing enough as well, so we were just getting a lovely, cosy trip in there.

“The first half of the last mile wasn’t overly strong which did worry me a little bit, we weren’t bowling along that much, but at the end of the day the horse’s sprint, the way he just goes through his gears – it’s won him the race.”

New Zealand Trotting Cup winner Copy That, who had sat in the breeze for much of the journey, had run his race by the final turn, enabling Herbertson to peel off Amazing Dream’s back ahead of the sprint lane and make his victory play.

Off a 28.4-second third quarter they crashed the line in 27.7, with Supreme Dominator pipping a brave Amazing Dream by a head to claim the cup for owners Sam Castro and Charlie Sant.

“He was up in class massively, he’s gone to the absolute top echelon now,” Herbertson said.

“We were just happy to be here and it was going to be a good test for him. To be able to come out on top – it’s very good.

“Going forward I’m sure he’ll contest a few more country cups, but he probably doesn’t need to overrace him – he’s a lovely horse who’s going to have a long career. He’s found a nice one.”

The Centre celebrated their final meet prior to the Christmas break, conducting a modified program at their Twilight meet last Friday evening. All athletes participated in 4 events with a remarkable 236 Personal Best results recorded. Ten athletes recorded four out of four event PBs to be awarded PB Stars of the Week – Skyla Berryman, Mya Berryman, Lexi Stapleton, Ava Radolovic, Jeremiah Pio, Braydn Rich, Ethan Sayers, Auden Sundqvist, Elouise Evans and Scarlett Wake.

Bridie Shanahan (Dolphins) continues to add to her record count, bettering her Under 16 Shot Put record with a new distance of 10.16 metres.

Under 9-16 athletes are reminded that entries to the State Combined Event, to be held at Lakeside Stadium, close on January 12. Entries are also now open for the Region Track & Field Championships to be held at John Landy Field, Geelong on February 12-13.

The Centre will now take a break over the festive season and will return to competition in the New Year on Saturday 22nd January.

Pleasingly, Eamon Grigg worked through his initial nerves to have his best bat for the season. Eamon carried this confidence into his bowling picking up 2 wickets and having plenty of action in the field. James Bayard, Clover McIlwaine and Charlotte Wallace also bowled tidy spells. Max Farrell again took on wicket keeping duties and found her groove quickly. Overall, the coach said the team appeared a “little flat in the field and probably didn’t quite reach their usual standards.” Angus Tranter played his first game of cricket since recently joining the club.

The batting innings didn’t start well with both openers dismissed inside the first 3 overs. This brought Noah Pace and Co-Captain James Burton to the crease. They appeared unfazed by their early arrival at the crease with both players displaying maturity and smart play during their innings. Noah retired (30) and the team continued to bat well with Sarah Burton, Angus Britt, Clover McIlwaine and Jai Singh, all contributing valuable runs.

Following the innings break the team collectively bowled well however the opposition were still well in the game, and Ballan were unable to get a wicket. A switch to spin with Sarah Burton and Noah Pace proved crucial with the run flow stopped and the pressure building on the opposition allowing Sarah and Noah to both get a wicket each. Eamon Grigg came into the attack and picked up two quick wickets, supported by Clover McIlwaine, Tom Norman and James Burton who all contributed in the final overs that guided the team to a well-deserved first season win.

Ballan 2nd XI (4th Grade) Ballan 123 lost Darley 127 Batting - Tyler Trickey 26, Max Burton 25, Eli Muir 14, Jack Wernicke 13 Bowling - Eli Muir 2/25, Ben Conroy 0/10, David Leach 0/15 After winning the toss, Ballan batted and got off to their best start for the season, being 2/45 at the 10 over drinks break in hot and windy conditions. Trickey and Burton, both having their best innings of the season, kept the run rate at a nice pace. Burton and Wernicke both fell in the 17th over with the score on 4/69, and wickets fell at regular intervals after that.

Muir, and the rest of the batters continued to make some runs and Ballan were bowled out in the 38th over for 123.

Darley paced their innings well with a high run rate throughout. Wickets were hard to come by and Muir continued to strive hard in the tough conditions. Conroy and Burton took magnificent catches at backward point and mid-wicket respectively to give Muir both his wickets after some good bowling. Leach again caused trouble for the opposition batters as they struggled against his experienced spinners. Darley cruised to victory in the 27th over of their innings.

Having top scored with 30 runs for the U15s, Noah Pace also picked up 1/18.
