Garden opens for charity
By Lachlan Ellis An historic property will open their garden to the public this Saturday, for charity. The over 500 metre cypress canopy driveway is just a small taste of what awaits as you emerge into a plethora of colour and uniqueness that will leave you gasping with delight. ‘Gurra’, the century old property, is located at Mt Wallace and is the site for an ‘Open Garden’ day to raise funds for the local Red Cross unit. The event is being generously hosted by Gurra’s owners, John and Jennie Swinnerton, who have been hard at work getting the garden looking immaculate since moving in six years ago.

Photos don’t do the garden justice, and Mr Swinnerton said he was eager to open the property for the community to explore. “It goes back well and truly over a hundred years, we understand. The house we live in is historic, even though it’s been rebuilt…it’s still on a historic footprint,” he told the Moorabool News. “We’ve been here for six years. There was a reasonably established garden, but it was in a rather bad shape, so we’ve completely redeveloped it. Ever since we’ve been here, we’ve had the idea of having an open garden. “The Red Cross showed interest, they came and had a look at it, and took it upon themselves to organise the Open Garden, despite the COVID issues we’ve all faced.”
The property in its entirety is over 140 acres, with stunning views to the west of the undulating hills– including Mount Warrenheip and Mount Buninyong. From 10:30am–3:30pm on Saturday 20 November, visitors can enjoy not only the sights and smells of the rose gardens but the abundant bird life, on-site stalls, a sausage sizzle and a raffle, as well as tea, coffee, and the famous Ballan Red Cross cakes and slices, will be on offer. Tickets can be purchased at the gate for $10 per head, with entry for school children free. All money raised will go to the Red Cross, to help those in need in Australia and abroad. ‘Gurra’ is located just 15 kilometres south of Ballan at 2081 Ballan/Meredith Road, Mt Wallace.

Debut win for Declan By Lachlan Ellis It is ‘Murphy’s Law’ that a son would travel the path of his father after a Dunnstown teenager scored a win in his first ever drive, hoping to make it the first of many. The son of harness horse trainers David and Erin Murphy, 17-year-old Declan Murphy said he has been around horses “from day dot”. “Mum and Dad have been training horses since I was little, I was pretty much born and bred into it. I’ve always been working with them and been around them, eventually as I got older, ended up doing track work and haven’t looked back since,” he told the Moorabool News. Racing in the 1710m Regent Entertainment Pace, Mr Murphy’s horse Atego Shades was second favourite to win, but the victory was by no means an easy one. Murphy came from the back of the pack and around the outside, to clinch the win in the last moments of the race. “Going into the race, I thought I’d be happy to run a place. But to be able to come out on top from coming last was a real big thrill. I was just over the moon with it all,” he said. “Leading up to the race, being my first ever drive…there was a lot to take in. In the back of my mind, was just to get around safely and get the best out of my horse.” Atego Shades was in fact trained by David Murphy, and Declan said he was proud to win for his parents. “Walking in after the win, Mum and Dad had the biggest smiles on their faces. Seeing those smiles meant a lot to me…I think they were very proud,” he said. And his future looks likely to follow in his parent’s footsteps. “Once I get a bit older, I’m looking at getting my own horse to train, which shouldn’t be too far away. I’ll be in it for the long haul, I reckon, if everything goes to plan and I can make a living out of it.”

Economy and tourism on Council’s agenda As Victoria opens back up again, Council’s Economic Development team is focusing on revitalising Moorabool’s economy and tourism.
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, AND VISITOR ECONOMY STRATEGIES HAVE YOUR SAY
Two new strategies are in the works – the Economic Development Strategy and Visitor Economy Strategy – and consultation with the community and local businesses will help shape the strategies. Council has appointed consultants from Urban Enterprise to help ensure the engagement process is sound. Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said much had changed since Council last implemented an Economic Development Strategy. “The last Economic Development Strategy was adopted in 2015,” Cr Sullivan said. “The Shire and the world have changed a lot since then and it’s time for a fresh approach, setting a strong foundation for a thriving local economy. And after a decade without a tourism plan, it’s time to hold our own and celebrate our Shire’s unique and breathtaking attributes.” One way Council is engaging with the community is through the Business & Community Survey, which is available online until 30 November. A series of virtual workshops will also be held with geographical themes such as ‘Rural West of the Shire’, aiming to uncover localised opportunities and themes across Moorabool. The workshops will cover both the Economic Development Strategy and the Visitor Economy Strategy, as economic development and tourism often go hand-in-hand.
Moorabool Shire Council has commenced consultation for the new Economic Development Strategy and a separate Visitor Economy Strategy. We encourage all Shire-based businesses including tourism and home-based, along with the broader community to take part. The survey and workshops will cover both strategies as opportunities related to economic development and the visitor economy are often intertwined.

Storm impacts Avenue trees

The heritage listed Avenue of Honour has stood in Bacchus Marsh for over 100-years however, a storm that lashed the region tested the century old elms. Moorabool was hit hard by yet another weather event on Thursday 28 October with a number of trees in the Avenue effected and parts of the shire left without power, leaving fallen power lines and trees in its wake. Some areas remained without power throughout the weekend. According to a Council spokesperson, “four trees were severely impacted around the Woolpack Road intersection, and minimal damage was identified through the rest of the Avenue of Honour”. “Further assessments by Council`s arborist have identified that these trees will require removal due to the poor condition they are now in. They are deemed safe at present but will be removed in the near future,” Council’s spokesperson told the Moorabool News. “There was also extensive damage to the powerlines and to fence lines around the intersection. Clean up
works on all the damage will commence/continue this week.” In the Dales Creek area, two homes were destroyed and deemed uninhabitable, with a further two buildings destroyed in Darley and Greendale. Three homes have been deemed damaged but habitable. The SES was swamped with calls for help, with more than 4500 calls across Victoria and over 65 in Bacchus Marsh alone. On Friday 29 October, some volunteer members of the Bacchus Marsh SES Unit worked for over 13 hours to help keep the community safe. “We appreciate the significant impact this second storm event will have on Moorabool residents, many of whom are still recovering from the June weather event,” Moorabool Shire Council CEO Derek Madden said. “Thank you to our communities for their ongoing resilience and understanding as emergency crews work around the clock to restore services and clear trees.” Council has advised that residents should be cautious on the roads, and not travel into storm-affected areas unless absolutely necessary.

Persistence key in powerline fight By Lachlan Ellis A senior DELWP member has told locals concerned about the Western Victoria Transmission Network Project (WVTNP) to continue voicing their questions and concerns, while planning is still in progress. Jack Krohn is Senior Impact Assessor at DELWP, which is responsible for administering the Environmental Effects Statement (EES) process, which the project is currently going through. On Thursday 11 November, Mr Krohn presented at an online community meeting hosted by Moorabool Shire Council, titled ‘Update on the Environment Effects Statement (EES) process’. He said the EES that AusNet was currently preparing could take over a year, but the community would have the chance to provide input before a final decision is made on the WVTNP. “Preparing an EES can take commonly in excess of 18 months. Sometimes we have them still being prepared 3 or 4 years after the [Planning] Minister’s decision that an EES is required,” Mr Krohn said. “Our [DELWPs] role is to ensure the proponent is able to prepare an appropriate EES. One of the things we do is convene a Technical Reference Group [TRG]…its role is to help us, and the proponent understand the needs of the particular EES. “The proponent is also responsible for preparing and implementing a Consultation Plan to provide opportunities to inform the community, and receive and respond to community feedback throughout the period of preparing the EES.” A flow chart was also provided, showing that following the current ‘preparing’ stage is one step before the ‘public review’ stage, where “interested parties can make submissions about the project”. After Mr Krohn’s presentation, an opportunity was provided for questions to be put to him by the community. An attendee under the name ‘Coimadai Residents’ questioned AusNet’s engagement with its Community Consultation Group (CCG), which is made up of members
of the community along AusNet’s area of interest corridor. The user argued that questions about undergrounding the power lines “continue to get deflected”. “The AusNet CCG seems to be just AusNet ticking a box and not actively listening to the concerned members,” the user wrote. Mr Krohn encouraged the CCG members, and anyone in the community who favoured an underground WVTNP, to continue speaking with AusNet. “Undergrounding is an alternative that might deliver an environmentally superior outcome – that is required to be investigated by the proponent. It will need to be done for the EES to be put on public exhibition,” he said.
“I encourage people with specific questions or information they believe ought to be taken into account, to be proactive about raising those matters with the proponent. We expect the proponent to treat that information with due weight, and treat those requests appropriately.” Mr Krohn told the meeting issues around biodiversity and risks such as bushfire would also need to be addressed. Another community session titled ‘Understanding Renewable Energy Zones (REZs) in Western Victoria’ will be held on Thursday 25 November, as well as a third session in December, on a date yet to be confirmed. Doors open for female sports leadership By Lachlan Ellis A program empowering women in the sport workforce has had a record number of participants this year, including a Moorabool equestrian worker. Amber Evans is an equestrian coach and dressage specialist at Strathcuan Equestrian in Pentland Hills and, was one of 160 course participants under Sport Australia’s 2021 Women Leaders in Sport Program. Despite the course running online this year due to the pandemic, Ms Evans said that taking part in the six-week program had enhanced her networking and connection to the industry. “One of the really nice things about the program was that you got to speak to women who were in a whole range of different sports, throughout Australia,” she told the Moorabool News. “It’s a fantastic stepping stone. The way they’ve run the course, they basically create an alumni…if you do the course, you then get access to other women all throughout Australia, who you can contact and who expect to be contacted. You can email them, organise a chance to catch up and talk through issues or about their careers. “I think that’s one of the things I enjoyed the most – this idea of connecting with people in a way that’s empowering, and helps you to grow. It can help improve the things you offer, give you new ideas and new perspectives on how to approach things.” Ms Evans said she would “one hundred per cent” recommend any women who were interested apply for next year’s program. “It’s an absolutely fabulous program, apparently it’s quite competitive to get into, but it is absolutely worth it. Even if you have to apply a couple of times, I’d recommend you do it,” she said. Minister for Sport, Senator Richard Colbeck, said the Women Leaders in Sport Program would help women shape the future of Australian sport. “Next year we will host the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup and in 2023, the FIFA Women’s World Cup, providing real opportunities on our home soil to inspire future generations,” Mr Colbeck said. “It’s important women at all levels and positions in sport have role models to look up to. This program creates genuine opportunities for women to grow and progress into leadership roles, which will benefit sport from grassroots right up to elite competition.” The wider program includes workshops, grants, and personal development courses. The program was established in 2002, and has supported over 25,000 women across the country. It is a joint venture between Sport Australia, the Australian Institute of Sport, and the Office for Women. Letters to the Editor Dear Editor, The October 26 edition (M/News – Landowners’ welcome entry) carried some false information about the rights of some alleged corporations under the 'Electricity Industry Act (2000) to access property. All Landowners in Australia who hold property are in fact 'Proprietors of an Estate in Fee Simple'. The rights attached to this form of Land Ownership provide that the Proprietor can exclude any and all persons from entering upon the land. This includes the Queen, but particularly includes Council officers and other pests. The police may enter BUT MUST be in possession of a Search Warrant. Regardless of what the Government legislates, it has NO POWER to remove the rights of ownership possessed by the proprietor of an estate in Fee Simple. The High Court case: 'Plenty vs Dillon', in about 1991, reconfirmed the rights of Proprietors. Earlier in the virus epidemic, there was a raid in Miners Rest, where a home was raided by the cops looking for some advertising stuff. The cops had a search warrant to justify their outrage. If anyone wants your land, they can buy it off you. They cannot force you to sell. The provisions of Fee Simple is also that if the CROWN wants your land they CAN resume it, BUT they MUST pay you compensation. In the case of an electricity line, the government might try to bully you, but they cannot resume your land under its authority as the CROWN, and then give it to a corporation. The Electricity System was sold Lock, Stock and Barrel, in the 1990s, so it is a private corporation. There are plenty of transmission line reserves in Victoria where underground cables could be installed. These reserves are already existing, so why not use them? Your story was another example in a long line of bullying examples from a bullying government and the solution is simple; just use the Ballot box when you next get the chance. Dear Editor, Many comments have been made by residents of Bacchus Marsh in relation to the proposed roundabout to be placed at the intersection of Main Street and Grant St/ Gisborne Rd. Some time ago someone spoke to a businessperson on that corner and the plan for a roundabout was 'hatched'. Clearly no REAL study was made of its feasibility. Without a North-South By-pass around the centre of Bacchus Marsh, the volume of heavy vehicles, even roadtrains, has increased alarmingly and most of us motorists can only shudder in disbelief. However, given we are stuck without a By-Pass, at least a roundabout keeps a fair flow of traffic. Traffic lights there will see a bank-up of traffic, huge trucks included which can stall traffic as far as the Hospital or the swimming pool waiting for a traffic light cycle. Traffic in Bacchus Marsh would end up worse than it is now. Is the plan for lights a 'DONE DEAL' or a proposal waiting for a feasibility study? And, as was pointed out in a letter last week, the removal of the Bottle Trees would be criminal destruction of something unique. Bacchus Marsh urgently needs a North/South By-Pass to take heavy vehicles away from the centre of our town, NOT traffic lights. And speaking of traffic problems, lucky the 'servo' on the corner of Gisborne Road and Clifton Drive is not operational yet. Residents of Clifton Drive, myself included, are already using other roads to get home, let alone when the (unnecessary) petrol outlet is open for business. Lastly, years ago the protest for a bypass road was the taking down of trees in the Avenue of Honor as Woolpack Road would have been an ideal location for such a bypass. Thanks to last week's storm, three huge trees came down. Perhaps now this option could be revisited - or is that too logical? It could solve many traffic problems in Bacchus Marsh. The ‘Age Well Live Well Strategy 2022 - 2025’ will provide a plan for how Council can meet the needs of older Mooraboolites over the next four years, and community input will be vital. Council is running a survey on its website until 7 December, asking residents who are 50 and older their thoughts on a range of factors such as housing options, personal mobility, and accessible events and services. Participants are also asked what could be improved, with both a list of services and factors, and a text box to type any additional comments or suggestions. A draft strategy will be created in January 2022 and exhibited in March, before being finalised in April next year.

Thunderbox ignited By Lachlan Ellis Vandals have damaged a public toilet and after a fire at a Gordon park, with firefighters and police called out to attend. The fire was set on the night of Tuesday 2 November, in the men’s toilets at Gordon Public Park on Stanley Street. Social media shared photos of the damage, with locals expressing their outrage at the “disgusting behaviour”. A police spokesperson told the Moorabool News that an investigation into the incident was ongoing. “It was deliberately lit. [We] believe it’s a couple of local kids, with an enquiry ongoing by CIU,” the police spokesperson said. “The incident occurred about 6.40pm. The toilet roll holder was lit with no damage to the building, just the toilet.” Gordon Public Park is Crown land administered by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning (DELWP). It is managed by a volunteer Committee of Management. DELWP was contacted for comment but did not reply to a request from The Moorabool News.

Be flood ready – bag it, block it With wild weather hitting Moorabool yet again, VICSES have issued a timely reminder to be prepared for flooding, with the ‘Bag It, Block It, Lift It and Leave’ campaign. You can ‘bag it’ by laying sandbags where water enters the home, ‘block it’ by covering your toilet, drains and doorways to prevent backflow, and ‘lift it’ by putting valuables onto higher areas such as tables, and ‘leaving’ to a safer place on higher ground. If you are driving in a flooded area, never enter floodwater. A car can float on just 15 centimetres of flowing water – the height of an average pen. “We can’t emphasise enough that people need to be alert to the conditions on the road. We’re appealing to people to take heed, and never drive through floodwaters. It could be the last decision you make,” SES Chief Officer of Operations Tim Wiebusch said. If you evacuate, bring pets, your mobile phone, spare clothes, a face mask, and any medication you need. Before leaving, turn off your gas and electricity, and check for any road closures that may affect you. You can monitor weather forecasts at bom.gov.au, and view warnings through the VicEmergency app,
website, and hotline (1800 226 226). Having an emergency plan that includes how emergencies may affect you, what you will do, where you will go and who you will contact is also a good idea. If you need flood advice, help

Plants uprooted Thieves have stolen plants from a Moorabool playground, with Council asking for witnesses to come forward. The 70 plants at the Lidgett Street Reserve in Bacchus Marsh included kangaroo paws, junipers and coastal rosemaries, and went missing last week. “Council is organising a replanting, which will sadly come at a steep price,” a social media post read. Anyone who witnessed these plants being pulled out of the ground, or witnesses to any plants being stolen from Council land or reserves, is asked to contact local police or Council.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics After one week of competition, Little Athletics was regrettably put on hold due to the extreme wet weather conditions. Heavy rainfalls leading up to Saturday morning, saw the Masons Lane running track under water, forcing the Committee to cancel week 2 of competition and delay the Official Opening of the 2021/22 Season. The Opening has now been rescheduled to this Saturday 20 November. Fortunately, former BMLAC member and current Port Adelaide Footballer, Zak Butters is still available to attend and will be presenting our new Centre Captains. Ballan Bowling Club
After a long and interrupted off season, bowlers have finally been able to get back on the green. Ballan players have been looking forward to finally playing on their new synthetic green surface, now completed and ready for the coming season. Over past Sunday’s, the club held both the men’s and ladies’ singles championship. The semi-final and grand finals were held on Sunday 7 November. After two very close games in the semis the men’s final was decided with Chris Love against Rick Sloan in a game that went right to the wire with Chris Love prevailing. In the ladies final it was new player Anne Draffin playing against Janine Jensen, again a hotly contested game was played with Anne Draffin holding on to record the win. Pennant season started on 13 November, and with a number of new players, the club is looking forward to a successful and enjoyable season. New players welcome. Ballan Bowling Club is situated in Cowie Street and the Recreation Reserve.

Bewley docks at Darley

The much-anticipated return of a former AFL player to Darley finally came to fruition at the weekend with talented midfielder Brett Bewley, signing on with the club for the 2022 BFNL season. Penning ink to paper must have been a bittersweet moment for the 26-year-old who has spent the last three seasons (inc. 25 games) with the Fremantle Dockers. Bewley headed west following his draft selection (pick 59) in 2018 on the back of a stand-out season with VFL club Williamstown where he averaged 26 disposals per game. The hard running left footer would be later named in the VFL Team of the Year, duly attracting the eyes of AFL pundits in the process. Bewley's progress, especially at AFL level has been closely monitored by the family faithful at Darley, wishing him every success along the way, living out a boyhood dream shared by so many, but reserved for a special few. According to Darley Football Manager Craig Baker, 186cm Bewley will provide a much-needed boost to the depth of the midfield group. "While expectations (on the club) naturally improve with these types of quality signings, it's the (potential) development of our younger players and the re-invigoration of our senior core that's most pleasing for us at the moment," Baker said. "Brett also brings with him standards in preparation and training that we're confident will have a significant impact on our youth coming through, not to mention his on-field leadership on game days." Baker conceded Bewley's signature was highly sort after around the state, with the club over the moon he has committed to the Devils. "I think up to eight VFL clubs as well as numerous local clubs had talks with Brett," Baker said. So, it's with long awaited open arms, Bewley returns to where his football journey began, and what a player he's become. Rival coaches from other BFNL clubs have already taken notice of the new addition announced by the club last Friday. Ironically, Bewley joins former Williamstown team-mate Nick Rodda at the Devils after the 194cm, 100kg big man signed on full-time less than a month ago. When you add newly appointed star coach Dan Jordan into the mix, it does offer considerable weight to the old adage that “good things do come in three’s”.
The Mimosa Homes Breeders Crown Series 2YO Colts and Geldings Final looks at the mercy of Catch A Wave after he put together another dominant performance in his semifinal on Saturday night. The Andy Gath-trained son of Captaintreacherous again showed some of his quirks and did a few things wrong, but proved far too good for his rivals and is likely to start a short-priced favourite in the Group 1 decider. Coming from the outside of the back row, driver Kate Gath wasted little time getting her charge up into the race and had worked to the top by the bell. She had to keep his mind on the job approaching the turn, but he knuckled down and was full of running through the line. He zipped home in a final quarter of 27.7sec to clock a mile rate of 1:56.2min and had 6.8m to spare over runner up My Ultimate Baxter (Jarrod Alchin/Cameron Hart), with Anotherbigman (Emma Stewart/Chris Alford). Catch A Wave has now won five of six starts, with his only blemish coming in the Tatlow Stakes at Geelong on October 23. “He's definitely got the raw ability, hasn't he? He's just got to put it all together,” Kate said. “He felt like he was walking or not going as quick as what he went, put it that way. “Then he probably went a little bit quicker than what I wanted up the back straight because he went to ease up, so I just had to put his mind on the job. Then he went a little bit too quick.” One of Catch A Wave's biggest challengers in next Saturday night's $300,000 Group 1 final is Julie Douglas-trained Interest Free, who took out the first of the semi-finals in impressive style. In a race of changing complexion, Interest Free was taken three back the pegs from his barrier eight draw and had to watch on as Aaron Dunn shot for home on Flash Jimmy, but sprinted quickly with clear running to haul him in comfortably before the line. Hes Charlies Angel (Charlene Gusman/David Miles), who found the early lead, held on to run third.

The Long Forest horseman has confirmed that he will not be taking a team to New South Wales for the series, which kicks off with opening round heats on November 27 at Tabcorp Park Menangle. Gath had second favourite Majestuoso in the trotters’ division, but is opting to give the horse a little break following next Friday night’s $30,000 Breeders Crown Championship at Tabcorp Park Melton. Fellow squaregaiting stablemates Tornado Valley – an ID winner in 2018 - McLovin and Havehorsewilltravel
were all second-round acceptances for the series, but will not be tried in the time-honoured event this year. Gath also had a strong hand in the pacing division, with Wolf Stride, Pacifico Dream and Tango Tara all possible starters. Some injury issues have been discovered in Wolf Stride and he’s now spelling in New South Wales while Pacifico Dream is being saved for the Vicbred Super Series, which kicks off with heats just a few days after the Inter Dominion Grand Final on December 11. Tango Tara is potentially racing well enough to be tried in the series, but with no stablemates making the trip, he too will stay home.
