Photo - Tim Saultry / sportingherald.com.au By Lachlan Ellis A Moorabool teenager has been honoured three times at the 2021 Ballarat Football League Women Awards, which were held online this year. 15-year-old Elise Cook from the Bacchus Marsh Football Club was named Best & Fairest in the Under 16 Youth Girls division, finishing on 14 votes, two votes clear of runner-up Tyla Crabtree from Redan. She was also equal Leading Goalkicker, sharing the honour with Kylah Thompson from North Ballarat at 12 goals, and was named in the Under 16 Youth Girls Team of the Year in the centre position. Elise’s mother Victoria said that she was beyond proud of her daughter’s achievements. “She absolutely loves football; it’s been her passion since she could walk basically. We knew that she’d won the Leading Goalkicker award because of the stats, but we had

absolutely no idea she’d get the other two awards,” she told the Moorabool News. “We knew she was going to poll well [in the Best & Fairest] because she plays really well, but we had no idea she’d do something like this. She was chuffed, and so were we. Our family were all so excited for her.” In kindergarten, Mrs Cook said, Elise told her class that when she grew up, she wanted to play for Geelong. “She was 4 years old and had a day where they asked ‘what do you want to be when you grow’ up…there were vets, there were doctors, there were builders…Elise never spoke at kinder, but she looked up and said ‘I want to play for Geelong’. I said, ‘love, that’s never going to happen’…but sure enough, we have the AFLW these days.” Elise said she was humbled by the awards, and was dreaming of an AFLW career in the future. “I was very excited, and it was very unexpected. I had a

feeling I’d win the Leading Goalkicker, but not the Best & Fairest or Team of the Year,” she said. “I’ve been playing basically my whole life. I’m hoping to get into the Rebels next year, and from there see where it takes me.” This year was Elise Cook’s first in the BFLW, though not her first in the red, yellow and black – she played with the boys for seven years, before entering the women’s league due to age. Alyssah Whearem from Darley was also awarded the Rising Star for the Under 14 Junior Girls, while Olivia Dilges from Bacchus Marsh was the Leading Goalkicker in the Under 14 Junior Girls, with 19 goals. Kim Bessell from Darley kicked the most goals in the Women’s division with 35. The presentation was pre-recorded, and was livestreamed on the Ballarat Football Netball League Facebook page on Wednesday 8 September.

A Youth member of the Bacchus Marsh SES has been named the first ever recipient of the Unit’s ‘Youth of the Year Award’, and the accompanying Ian Burgess Memorial Shield. 16-year-old Molly Ovenden was named the inaugural winner late last year, with the Bacchus Marsh SES Unit reflecting on Molly’s hard work, and the hard work of all SES Youth members, on International Youth Day, this year on August 12. Ms Ovenden joined the Bacchus Marsh SES in January 2020, shortly after turning 15, and is the unit’s youngest member. She told the Moorabool News that it was an honour to be recognised for her work with the SES. “I’ve done some work clearing trees, storm damage, and searching for missing people. It’s pretty humbling to get the Youth of the Year Award,” she said. “I hope to stick around for the years to come…they [the Bacchus Marsh SES Unit] are very welcoming and fun.” Unit Controller Bill Robson said that Ms Ovenden was a more than worthy recipient of the award.

“Molly has made a huge commitment to the Bacchus Marsh SES Unit and the Moorabool community. She has undertaken all of her General Rescue Training and is a regular responder to emergencies around the Shire,” he said. “Molly has gone on to complete her Road Rescue accreditation and proves age is no barrier. Molly manages her volunteer work with her studies at Bacchus Marsh Grammar.” The Youth of the Year Award was first introduced by the Bacchus Marsh SES last year, with the Shield named after late member Ian Burgess, who sadly passed away on September 5, 2020, aged 55. Mr Burgess was a member of the SES for 17 years, and the Ian Burgess Memorial Shield was presented to Molly by his wife, Maria, at the Bacchus Marsh Unit’s end of year break up in 2020. “We were so proud to present the ‘Youth of the Year Award’ to Molly on Ian’s behalf. Such an honour for our family. It’s so terrific to see so many young people giving back to the community. Bacchus Marsh SES has such a wonderful depth of members,” Ms Burgess said.

Carole King sang she could feel the earth move under her feet, and last Wednesday around 9.15am across Moorabool, plenty of people did feel the earth literally move. Geoscience Australia reported a magnitude 6 earthquake occurred just outside of Woods Point near Mansfield in the north-east of Victoria, at a depth of 10 kilometres. Tremors were felt as far away as Sydney, Dubbo and Launceston. Reports of people feeling dizzy, houses shaking, and the interior rattling were many of the disbelief comments that appeared on social media. “The blinds in the office at my husband’s work were slapping the windows,” Sherri-leigh Land wrote on the Moorabool News Facebook page. Other comments included, “my chair shook sideways”; “Whole place was shaking for roughly 5-7 secs”; “My couch rattled back and forward in Melton”; “Not only felt, saw the building shake”; “Had it here too in Mt Egerton, was the weirdest feeling”. The Australian Red Cross had their emergency response teams on standby and monitored the situation closely with 12 aftershocks by 2pm, the magnitude of which were mostly between 2.5 and 3.5 on the Richter scale. “Aftershocks are common in the days, weeks and months following an earthquake however, there is no way to predict the time it may impact,” a spokesperson for the Victoria State Emergency Service said. “If one does happen, we encourage the community to DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON.” The SES is the control agency for an earthquake in Victoria and Emergency Management Victoria (EMV) did put out a warning following the tremor. “Geoscience Australia confirmed Victoria experienced its largest earthquake at 5.9,” Tim Wiebusch SES Chief Officer said. “There has been a range of minor structural damage and over 100 requests for assistance,” he said. Mr Wiebusch said of those 100 requests, 55 were from the metropolitan area and mainly the damage was to chimneys and facades on buildings. “A timely reminder for members of the community that when you start to experience an earthquake, and you are outdoors, you stay away from buildings, trees, and any other large objects. “DROP, COVER, and HOLD ON is the key message when it comes to earthquakes,” Mr Wiebusch concluded. Moorabool Shire Council told the Moorabool News “no reports of damage were called in to the Customer Service Team”.

Stay safe, stay alert By Helen Tatchell COVID has reared its ugly head in Moorabool again, with 70 cases reported in total, 17 active, since the beginning of the 2021 year. The figures were accurate from Monday 27 September and last Monday 20 September, Moorabool hit 77.70 per cent of the 15plus population first dose vaccinated. Second dose vaccinations in Moorabool sits at 44.40 per cent. Several businesses in Bacchus Marsh and Ballan were last week identified as Tier 2 sites and have since been deep cleaned and reopened. One popular café in Ballan, Zest Licensed Café, shut after being notified on Wednesday 22 September and immediately organised local industrial and forensic cleaners (TactBioRecovery) to conduct a ‘deep clean’ of the premises the next day. Owner Ros Gatt said it was the right, and only thing to do. “DHHS notified us and to be honest I don’t think I was really shocked. I definitely was not surprised as Moorabool was completely surrounded with lockdowns and I feel it was inevitable,” she said. There was plenty of joy after the nine staff members all returned negative results. “It says a lot about our cleaning regime and our wonderful team of staff,” Ms Gatt said. It is alleged the positive case was from within Moorabool and not from metro-Melbourne. The Café opened for business two days later and Ms Gatt assured all their customers and visitors it is safe to attend. “Please continue to shop local and support local business in Ballan and throughout Moorabool,” she said.

New vaccine rollout hits Ballan

Ballan residents will be among the first in the state to be offered the Moderna vaccine, with a local pharmacy among four invited to join the rollout. Ballan UFS has signed on to the rollout, alongside fellow UFS pharmacies in Melton, Melton South and Gisborne. A UFS spokesperson said they would begin administering the Moderna vaccine in Ballan this week. “The Ballan UFS Pharmacy was one of the small number of regional pharmacies approved to administer Moderna in Tranche 1. We will start vaccinating with Moderna from Monday 27 September,” UFS’ spokesperson told the Moorabool News. “We are hoping to offer the Moderna vaccine three days a week in Ballan. As Ballan is a single pharmacist pharmacy, and Health Department guidelines require two pharmacists onsite to administer vaccines, we are a little restricted by the need to bring in additional resources.” With bookings for Pfizer vaccines still limited, UFS’ spokesperson said introducing the Moderna vaccine locally would “increase the accessibility of a COVID vaccine for everyone under the age of 60 who chooses not to be vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine”. The Moderna vaccine is the third approved for Australia’s COVID-19 vaccination program, with one million doses due to arrive in Australia by the end of the month, and three million a month to arrive from October. Research from American’s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has found the Moderna vaccine is 93 per cent effective at preventing COVID-19 hospitalisations, compared to 88 per cent for the Pfizer vaccine. Young artists opportunity to reach new heights

Hometown hero best in the West By Lachlan Ellis An AFL player from Bacchus Marsh has been named Best Clubman, after another hard-fought season. Liam Duggan, a former Cobra, and now a West Coast Eagles player was awarded the Chris Mainwaring Medal as the Eagles’ Best Clubman for 2021, his first club medal since winning Rookie of the Year at the club in 2017. The medal is named after West Coast Hall of Famer and two-time premiership player Chris Mainwaring, who sadly passed away in 2007. Duggan only played 14 games for the Eagles this year due to a knee injury but averaged 19 disposals – his highest-ever average disposal count – in a year where the Eagles fell just shy of a finals berth.

An average of 13.4 kicks and 6.7 marks were also records for Mr Duggan since he began playing for West Coast in 2015. A particular stand-out game was in Round 5 against Collingwood, where he tallied 36 touches (his most ever), 13 marks, and 751 metres gained, and was awarded 148 AFL Fantasy points for his efforts – more than any other player on the ground that day. The Eagles announced last Thursday that Mr Duggan had signed a new three-year contract, keeping him at West Coast until the end of the 2024 season. Duggan told Eagles media that it was “super exciting” to remain at the club, and that he’d “love to be a one-club player”. “That’s been high on my priority since arriving at the AFL and arriving at this great club as well. That is something I’d love to be once my footy career is over,” he said.

Moorabool’s young artists have been given the chance to ‘soar free like birds’ and have their work on display for all to see, in a new exhibition. Artists living or attending school in Moorabool from the ages of 5 to 16 are invited to submit their artwork with the theme of ‘birds’, tying in with the Wombat Regional Arts Network’s ‘Birds in Ballan’ winter program. The entrants will also go in the running for the Moorabool Young Artist Awards, with the winners announced on Saturday 13 November at 2pm, following the Grand Opening of the Young People’s Exhibition at 11am. Prizes kindly donated by Moorabool Library Services will be awarded to the lucky winners. Entry is free, with one entry allowed per person. All artworks must be 2D, and can be any medium other than photography. It must not be bigger than A3 (42cm x 29.5cm), and must be framed with wood, plastic or mountboard, with a wire or string on the back for hanging. All entries must be submitted in-person to the Ballan Library on Saturday November 6 from 9.30 am – 1 pm, along with an entry form that can be found at wombatarts.org/ moorabool-young-artists-exhibition. The exhibition will be held from 11am–4pm on 13 November at the Leslie Batchelor Gallery, at the rear of the Ballan Mechanics Hall. Sewer upgrades completed Major water and sewer projects for Bacchus Marsh and surrounds have been completed by Greater Western Water. The $20 million works include an upgraded sewer pump station, a new sewer pipeline and two new water pipelines. Greater Western Water’s General Manager Growth and Infrastructure, Amanda Smith said with the local population projected to double to 46,000 in the next 20 years, this important investment will ensure “we can meet demand for services from the Bacchus Marsh community for many years to come.” “These are significant projects for the town’s sewerage and water network. In particular, it ensures Greater Western Water can meet the demand for sewerage services for at least the next 15 years,” Ms Smith said. “These projects have been safely delivered under COVIDSafe settings, demonstrating the concerted efforts of staff and contractors. Ms Smith said Greater Western Water thanks the community for their patience and understanding during construction.

PROJECT DETAILS Ms Smith said below, are just several of the major projects “we have under development and construction across our service area to deliver affordable, high-quality service to growing communities like Bacchus Marsh.” Grant Street sewer pump station upgrade A $6.7 million upgrade to the existing sewage pump station at Peelmans Lane near Grant Street. The project increases the pump’s capacity, enabling additional sewage to be received and pumped to the Bacchus Marsh Recycled Water Plant for treatment and recycling. The pump station upgrade also eases the load on the Avenue of Honour pump station, which receives most of the town’s sewage.

Sewer Pipeline project A new $9.2 million, 8 kilometre-long sewer pipeline from Peelmans Lane to the Bacchus Marsh Recycled Water Plant. The pipeline will help with the management of sewage flows throughout the town. Bacchus Marsh Sewer Duplication Work was completed late last year on a new 2.5-kilometre duplicate sewer pipeline from Holts Lane to the Avenue of Honour. The $3.4 million pipeline is critical new infrastructure to meet the increased demand for essential sewer services in the area. Water Pipeline projects $1.74 million across two new water pipelines: a new 800-metre water main from Griffith Street to East Maddingley Road and a new 770-metre water main from Franklin Street west to Barry Street. These projects will boost water pressure to businesses in the rapidly growing Parwan area.

Grants to help stormaffected artists Creatives and creative communities have been offered up to $1,500 by Regional Arts Victoria, with Moorabool one of 11 Local Government Areas (LGAs) eligible. The ‘Creative Recovery Small Grants Program: 2021 Storms’ aims to help those who were impacted by the significant storms and floods that hit Victoria in June, and is supported by the Helen Macpherson Smith Trust. Individuals, groups and incorporated not-for-profit organisations can apply, but must have been located in Moorabool, or one of the other impacted regions listed on Regional Arts Victoria’s website, when the storm incident occurred. They must also indicate how they were impacted by the storm, and either have an ABN or have an auspice organisation manage their grant. The current round of applications closes at 5pm on Friday 1 October, and applicants will be notified whether they were successful from Monday 25 October. Seniors Week - reimagined It is that time of year to celebrate however, a festival for seniors will once again be held online. The annual Victorian Seniors Festival will be held from October 3 to 10 with Moorabool’s senior residents still able to participate. As part of this year’s festival, Moorabool Shire Council will celebrate and acknowledge the valuable contribution senior residents make to their communities. Council has approved the construction of a new Buddhist monastery in an interesting location – Mount Wallace. Located on a 32-hectare site, the monastery complex is planned to hold weekly meditation sessions with up to 30 patrons, and six annual festivals per year with up to 200 attendees. The Geelong-Ballan Road property will host a 15-metre-tall pagoda, with a nearby 15 x 35 metre meditation hall, and 25 x 40 metre dining hall. Also to be constructed is a 60-car car park, with an overflow car park to accommodate 40 spaces during festivals. The applicant, the Melbourne Karen Buddhist Association (MKBA), purchased the property in August 2019, with the goal of building a temple, monastery and meditation centre for those with an interest in the Karen Buddhist faith. The group was founded by a group of Karen refugees from Myanmar, part of an ethnic group that live primarily in southern and south-eastern Myanmar. The Mount Wallace site was originally a bluegum plantation, and according to Council’s report, most of the land will continue to be used as such. The proposal to build the monastery complex was approved unanimously at Council’s 18 August Development Assessment Committee (DAC). Construction of the pagoda is proposed for 2022, while the meditation and dining halls are planned for completion in 2024. Mount Wallace is situated 16km south of Ballan and there were no objections from the community or surrounding properties to the application.

Moorabool Young Writers’ Award 2021 In a record-breaking year, receiving 194 entries across three categories, the finalists and winners of the Moorabool Young Writers Awards were announced in an online ceremony on Saturday 28 August. After much rescheduling, #bookweek2021 provided an opportune time to celebrate our local young writers, with many of this year’s stories, whether consciously or subconsciously, reflective of the CBCA 2021 Book Week theme “Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds”. A Moorabool Library spokesperson said in what again has been a “challenging year for our local schools and communities, we congratulate and celebrate each student and story entered in this year’s awards.” Thank you to the PCSSA organising committee, MYWA judge Allyse Near, local Moorabool schools, teachers, students and community for their continued support of these awards, we look forward to seeing you back in 2022. COVID-19 lockdowns and state border closures have slammed Queensland strawberry farmers and forced ripe fruit to go to waste, but one local Moorabool farmer is hopeful things will turn around. The Queensland Strawberry Growers Association put out a call on social media for Queenslanders to “buy up big” to “keep farmers afloat”, with strawberry prices at an all-time low. Queensland Strawberry Growers Association president Adrian Schultz told ABC News that demand was down as much as 50 per cent, with some growers in the Sunshine State spraying strawberries out four to six weeks ahead of schedule. The strawberry season doesn’t start until midOctober here in Victoria, and while he acknowledges the potential risk ahead, Bacchus Marsh strawberry grower Photo – Naturipe Farms David Durham remains optimistic. “It’s a very difficult one for us, it kind of depends on how long Melbourne is locked down for, that’s about 80 per cent of our market, so without Melbourne we’re in a little bit of strife,” Mr Durham told the Moorabool News. “We’re planting a little bit less at the moment, it’s harder to get workers. We sort of budget on Melbourne being open, being able to come to Bacchus Marsh. If they can’t come, we’ll probably be in a similar boat to the Queensland growers.” However, Mr Durham is hopeful. “Last year we had a pretty good season, we were pretty close to normal. I always like to try and put a positive spin on things, we’re hopeful that Melbourne is going to get let out eventually and we can get back to normal.”

I cannot understand why these ‘boffins’ focus on the problem and not the cause. It is not the roundabout that causes the problem –in fact it works very well – it is the increasing number of vehicles that go through. Putting traffic lights will only exacerbate the problem and create more congestion. Why not put the money towards the north/south town by-pass to get the trucks out, get the schools to stagger start and stop times and complete the aqualink as a priority. Russ Hendry Maddingley

Junior age structure delayed As COVID restricted the playing of junior sport over the last 18-months, including finals, one league is remaining positive, already planning for 2022 and beyond. Shane Anwyl is the General Manager for the BFNL and said the board confirmed the junior age structure shall remain as an ‘odd’ structure for season 2022. “To provide some certainty and continuity, the existing ‘odd’ structure will continue and will allow further assessment to be made based on the ever-changing world we live in,” he said. “After consideration of many aspects, not least of which is club feedback and registration data, the league believes it is in the best interest of the competition to delay the change of age groups until season 2023.” Mr Anwyl said when the decision was made to change the structure of juniors in the Ballarat FNL, “COVID had not yet appeared in our daily lives and the disruption currently felt over the past two years was not envisaged by anyone.” Junior football in 2022 shall consist of: • Under 17 Senior / Reserves Football • Under 15 Senior / Reserves Football • Under 13 Senior / Reserves Football • Under 11 Senior / Reserves Football • Under 9 Senior / Reserves Football (Friday night competition) Further to the above, the Under 19s shall remain as that grade in 2022. Mr Anwyl said the board is committed to implementing a structure for junior football that will best cater for the growing demands of their competition and “ensure the longterm viability of the Ballarat FNL Juniors moving forward”.

The former Kiwi sat three-wide without cover for the last lap in chasing the leaders who enjoyed some moderate early sectionals, and not only mowed them down but also held off those who hooked themselves to her tail for an armchair ride. She crushed the clock in a 54.6-second last half to win the 2690-metre Group 2 crown, gifting reinsman Anthony Butt his first Kilmore Cup some five years after he finished second by a neck with Ohoka Punter. “She is class and is just a great mare,” Butt told TrotsVision. “She’s won so many big races now and beaten the boys most occasions. “She just keeps doing the job. She probably flies under the radar a little bit, but any of these big races she goes in she always has a great chance of winning.” It was also a significant result for Purdon, who set up base in Victoria this year and has enjoyed a stellar first season due in no small part to Amazing Dream, who captured two Group 1s in Queensland and tonight tasted success in her first Victorian start. “She always just finds a way to win and that’s what just makes her such a top mare,” he told TrotsVision. “Her trial was good 10 days ago and we didn’t back off her work coming into this race. Her work was really strong, we had an awkward post to contend with, but I knew we had the right horse for the day.”
