A life love of teaching By Lachlan Ellis Victoria’s longest-serving teachers, principals and administrators have been honoured by the State Government, with two from Moorabool making the list. Julie Ferguson from Ballan Primary School and Sue Tromp from Warrenheip Primary School were recognised through the ‘Recognition of Service to Victorian Education’ program, alongside 340 other Victorian school staff. Ms Ferguson is Principal of Ballan Primary and told the Moorabool News she had thoroughly enjoyed her time as a teacher. “It’s a fantastic career, I’ve loved it. It’s all about relationships, if you really like children, it’s the career for you. It’s not easy, but I’ve loved it…I have great memories. You touch children’s lives, when they come up years later and they’re happy to see you, it’s beautiful,” she said. “I’ve been in education for 40 years, 17 of those at Ballan…being recognised for my service makes me feel old! I was surprised, they’ve cancelled it so many times…we were going to go for a ceremony, [Victorian Minister for Education] James Merlino was going to be there and speak with us and present the certificates. “But it’s an honour to be a principal and work in a school, anyway, shaping children’s lives. Being recognised made me feel proud.” Minister Merlino congratulated all 342 Victorian education staff for their hard work and commitment, particularly during these uncertain times. “These teachers and school staff members have given so many years to delivering fantastic education to Victorian students – and I know all Victorians are with me when we thank them for their decades of dedication,” Mr Merlino said. “Whether they work in the classroom or in an office supporting schools, everyone receiving recognition for their service to Victorian education has made a huge contribution to our Education State.” 174 teachers and staff were recognised for 40 years of service, 119 for 45 years of service, 40 for 50 years of services, and nine for 55 years of service. The long-serving education staff will all receive a personalised Certificate of Recognition, as well as a commemorative booklet. Ms Tromp was recognised for her 45-years of service and was not available for comment at the time of print.

100 not out
A Greendale woman has turned 100 this month, and though COVID restrictions meant no birthday party, her dining table is full of cards and flowers. Joyce Thompson was born on 8 September 1921 – less than six months earlier, the RAAF was established, and when Ms Thompson was just over a month old, Richmond won its second VFL premiership, defeating Carlton 36 to 32. Her daughter Estelle lives with her and said her mother is as sharp as ever. “She still keeps active, she has a walking frame of course but yes, she’s keeps really well. She has a better memory than me,” Estelle joked. Ms Thompson grew up near Launceston in Tasmania, working as a maid for a doctor from the age of around 15. When Estelle was five years old, her mother went to work at a wool mill, which remained in operation until she retired. She grew up in a family with 11 children, three of whom are still alive. Estelle is one of her four children, and said Joyce has four great-
great grandchildren, with two more coming in December. As for the secret to living such a long life, Estelle said her mum’s advice was quite simple. “She’s never drank, she’s never smoked. She just likes a cuppa…eating right and having a hot cuppa are her secrets,” she said. Among the many letters Ms Thompson received celebrating her long life were from the HRH The Queen, Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Premier Daniel Andrews and Governor-General David Hurley. “She’s received lots of messages and letters…she was pretty exhausted the next day. We told her she has to live until 101 now so that we can give her a proper birthday…she said, ‘I don’t know about that’,” Estelle said with a laugh. “Dad coming back from fighting in the Second World War is probably her fondest memory.” Joyce Thompson has 4 children, 17 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren (1 deceased), and 6 great great grandchildren.

Choose the best start with a tick of approval The Kinder Tick initiative was launched early this year, making it easier for families to identify approved and funded kindergarten programs – ensuring their children are attending the best programs. Minister for Early Childhood Ingrid Stitt said they are making it easier for families to find “good quality kindergarten programs that suit their needs”. “Signage will be placed on services that deliver kindergarten programs, whether that’s in a long daycare setting or a standalone kinder,” she said. Only services that meet the following criteria will be eligible to use the kinder tick branding: • Led by a qualified teacher • Provides a play-based learning program • Funded by the Victorian Government Research shows that having qualified teachers and educators plan, deliver and evaluate play-based kindergarten programs leads to better outcomes for children. The Kinder Tick brand makes it easier for families that want their children to attend kinder by identifying long day care and standalone services that offer good quality funded programs. This will mean families can be assured that if they see the Kinder Tick branding – the kinder is endorsed by the Victorian Government as a good quality service. “This is one of the many initiatives the Government is launching to support the sector and deliver consistency across Victoria as we roll out universal Three-Year-Old Kindergarten,” Minister Stitt said. In an Australian first, the Labor Government has committed almost $5 billion to deliver 15 hours of funded kindergarten programs for three-year olds to children in Victoria by 2029. The Three-Year-Old Kindergarten reform has already been rolled out to 21 local government areas and will expand across the rest of the state in 2022. Long day care centres make up more than a third of services already delivering universal funded Three-Year-Old Kindergarten and together with standalone kinders are an important part of the early learning sector. Funding to help with repairs A Moorabool school has been allocated $35,000 in funding from the State Government, as part of a $435,000 investment into schools in Macedon District. Member for Macedon, Mary-Anne Thomas, announced last Wednesday (15 September) that Coimadai Primary School would be one of seven primary schools in the district to share in the funding, aimed at maintenance works. “This investment ensures our local students can learn in safe settings that complement the top-class education we are committed to providing,” Ms Thomas said. “I’m delighted to see our amazing local schools share in funding to get these much-needed maintenance projects off the ground.” Of the $35,000, $15,000 will go towards “high priority maintenance tasks” identified in the school’s Rolling Facilities Evaluation, which includes air conditioning repairs, door repair, repainting and shade structure replacement. The remaining $20,000 will be used to address roof and structural issues identified in Coimadai Primary’s Specialist Assessment. The localised funding is one part of a $17 million investment by the State Government in Term 3 funding across Victoria, under the Planned Maintenance Program (PMP). It comes on top of more than $22 million already provided during Term 1 and 2 allocations, to ensure existing buildings at Victorian state schools are safe, modern and properly maintained.

Magpies eat insects, not mince By Helen Tatchell Magpies are front and centre again, but it is not about the swooping to protect their nests, it is what humans are feeding them. Jess Law is from the Adelaide Wildlife Rehabilitation facility and told the Moorabool News, it is the “same story, every single year”. “Springtime we get calls about a fledgling that can’t walk, that looks scraggly, that’s being attacked by other birds. And our heart sinks.” The cause is a metabolic bone disease that hits chicks the hardest. Ms Law said this is a direct result of people feeding the parents minced meat, diced meat, cat food or bread. “The chick doesn’t end up with enough calcium or phosphorus and Vitamin D for growth and its legs deform into weak clasped toes. Its feathers are weak, tatty and broken. Often their beaks are bent or broken,” she said. “We have done this to them. We have created these growth deformities through feeding her parents food that was not meant for a magpie.” Generally, the birds do not survive, the odd bird may be able to have some function but generally speaking, “they don’t”. If you see a young magpie in your area that fits the above description, and you are not feeding them, it is likely it could be a neighbour who is, as they are territorial.
“The problem is mainly in the suburbs with multiple people feeding them, if only a small amount, it adds up if a number of neighbours are doing the same,” Ms Law said. And the message is quite simple if you want to feed birds in your garden, as it is not what is in the meat, it is what isn’t. “They eat lots of insects, so I suggest people buy insects from their local pet shop to throw on the grass for them, dig some worms out of your compost or even simply just water your lawn so insects come to the surface,” Ms Law said. However, the most important message from Ms Law is also very clear. “Please, please, don’t feed them meat. It’s killing them,” she said. The results may not see a massive decline in magpie numbers overall however, as they are territorial, it will end up killing off entire families. “Population numbers in your garden will decline,” Ms Law said. If you’re a livestock, grain, or mixed farmer, looking to take your business plan and skills to the next level, the Farm Business Resilience Program could be for you. Run by Agriculture Victoria, the program aims to help farmers address challenges such as droughts, natural disasters, and market uncertainty. Agriculture Victoria Project Leader, Kit Duncan-Jones, said that while Victorian farmers are no strangers to managing uncertainties, the program would help reinforce their resilience. “The program will support farmers to adapt to a changing climate and strengthen their farm business’s resilience to withstand future shocks and challenges,” Mr Duncan-Jones said. “Farmers will be supported by Agriculture Victoria staff and a professional Farm Management Consultant to develop a strategic Farm Business Plan, which will assist them to take actions to effectively manage risk and take advantage of opportunities available to them to grow their businesses. “If you’re a farmer who wants to put your plans on paper and commit your time to strengthen your knowledge and skills, this program will assist you to set up your farm for success now and for your family into the future.” The program is being delivered both online and face-to-face from now until June 2022, and will be delivered in five modules over the course of a few months. Participating farmers will also have access to a Farm Business Resilience Resource Library both during and after the program – complete with worksheets, presentation materials, videos, podcasts and more. The Farm Business Resilience program is jointly funded by the Australian Government and Victorian Government through the Future Drought Fund. ‘Farmy Army’ egg-cellent donation
Victorian egg farmers have had a crack at contributing to food relief, donating thousands of eggs to Foodbank Victoria to help feed those in need. Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) Egg Group President Brian Ahmed said the industry had “an important role to play” in providing food and fibre to those suffering difficulties throughout the pandemic. “Over the next 10 weeks, Victorian egg farmers will donate at least two pallets of eggs per week to help those struggling to put food on the table. If you stacked them on top of each other, it’s roughly enough to scale the height of Melbourne’s Eureka Tower more than 30 times,” Mr VFF Egg Group President Brian Ahmed. Photo - supplied Ahmed said. “The steady supply of eggs during this time will help ensure a guaranteed stream of produce to help meet the current demands and for the weeks and months ahead.” The donation drive ties in with the VFF’s recently launched ‘Farmy Army’ initiative, a longterm plan to pool produce and resources to help farmers and communities in times of need. Foodbank Victoria CEO Dave McNamara praised the farmers for their generosity and said their kind donations would be put to good use. “This is yet another amazing show of support from the farming community. A brilliant source of protein that can be incorporated into so many different dishes for those doing it tough. More importantly, it solves one of the age-old quandaries…clearly on this occasion, the EGGS are coming first!” Mr McNamara said. ‘Bit’ and run incident By Lachlan Ellis Dog owners are being warned by a Ballan woman to be vigilant when taking their beloved pets for a walk, after her chihuahua was attacked. Jade Ray’s chihuahua, Hurley, was being walked with Ms Ray’s mother on Walsh Street between 2:45 and 3pm on Tuesday 31 August, when Hurley was attacked by a husky. But rather than get their husky off Hurley, apologise, and help, Ms Ray said the husky’s owner simply walked away. “The owner didn’t say anything at all, and just walked away after watching his dog grab Hurley by the neck and shake him around. My mum was sitting on the side of the road clutching Hurley in absolute fear and tears,” she told the Moorabool News. “Hurley was on a longer lead than the other dog mum was holding. The husky was too quick to snatch Hurley’s poor head in its mouth, leaving my dog with a severe puncture wound from the husky’s teeth, along with an extreme amount of blood loss.” She said she’d asked around for anyone who knew local husky owners, and had also spoken with a ranger – but unfortunately no information on the husky or its owner had come to light yet. “Unfortunately, they [the ranger] sent back a letter saying that there was not enough evidence to identify the opposing dog and/or the owner,” Ms Ray said. “We do hope the owner does take some responsibility and/or acknowledgement. If anyone knows of someone who owns a husky that walks it around Jopling/Walsh Street, please let me know. Any information is helpful.” Thankfully, Hurley is alright now, and is recovering from his injury. Arrests following Operation Achilles Victoria Police arrested two young men last week, following alleged dangerous dirt bike riding. Three search warrants were executed on the morning of Monday 13 September in Maddingley, Darley and Melton. Police seized a dirt bike, multiple mobile and electronic devices, and motorcycle clothing and helmets. A 21-year-old man from Maddingley and an 18-yearold man from Melton were both charged with several offences, including conduct endangering persons, driving without a licence, use unregistered motor vehicle and drive in a dangerous manner. Both men were bailed to appear at the Sunshine Magistrates’ Court on 1 April 2022. Acting Senior Sergeant Dean Pickering said hoon behaviour put more than just the participants in danger. “This behaviour is not just a bit of fun – this is
serious criminal offending and the chances of serious injury to the general public and the riders themselves is very high,” he said. “There is a significant volume of evidence that we are constantly working through and [we] can guarantee that it is only a matter of time before we make more arrests. “Parents who are buying these bikes for their kids need to know full well the dangerous way they are being ridden, and that it could lead to devastating consequences.” Operation Achilles began in February this year in response to increases in hoon activities, and more than 50 cars have been seized as part of the operation. The draft plan has entered the exhibition period, and all feedback will be reviewed to shape the final plan, which will then be presented to Council for approval at a special meeting in October. The key health themes Council plans to focus on under the draft Health and Wellbeing Plan, following data analysis and community consultation, are healthy minds, being active, the food we eat, keeping ourselves safe, and reducing harmful addictions. The draft was published on Council’s website on Thursday 2 September and will be available for public feedback until 5 pm on Thursday 30 September. Third time lucky to have trees planted
The Grow West Community Planting Day had to be cancelled for the second year in a row, but event organisers were keen to get their hands dirty to make sure the trees and shrubs still got planted. Around 4000 indigenous trees and shrubs were planted at Kel Shields Flora Reserve in Maddingley in August – the third attempt to get the event going in 2021, after the planting day was cancelled on 5 June and 24 July. Thanks to a last-minute sponsorship from Natural Resources Conservation League of Victoria, Grow West was able to employ contractors in place of volunteers, to help get the 4000 plants in the ground before the end of the planting season. Port Phillip & Westernport CMA’s Grow West Coordinator, Helena Lindorff, said it was a privilege to continue the group’s work revitalising the natural landscape. “I hope that the adjoining residents take pride in this little gem and look after it, as it has an important historical connection to an important Bacchus Marsh resident, along with the wonderful landscape and environmental values,” Ms Lindorff said. “This project contributes to the Grow West vision of rejuvenating 10,000 hectares of land by connecting the You Yangs Regional Park, Brisbane Ranges National Park, Werribee Gorge State Park and Lerderderg State Park through a mosaic of restoration works on private and public land.” Kel Shields Flora Reserve is a five-hectare reserve named after former Shire President, the late Kelvin (Kel) Shields. Mr Shields was born in Bacchus Marsh in September 1923 and was elected to the Bacchus Marsh Shire Council in 1967, serving until his passing in 1989. He was also an active member of the Bacchus Marsh Conservation and Planning Association, who planted the existing trees at Kel Shields Flora Reserve in the 1980s. Grow West Community Planting Days have been running for over 15 years, and the Grow West project is a partnership between Council, Port Philip & Westernport CMA, Melbourne Water and Rural Water. Project sponsors include SureGrow Treemax, 15 Trees, GJ Gardner Homes, Bacchus Marsh Community Bank, and Natural Resources Conservation League of Victoria. Friends of Werribee Gorge and Long Forest Mallee, Moorabool Landcare Network, Victorian National Parks Association, Bacchus Marsh Lions Club and the Victorian Mobile Landcare Group also support the project. Regent Honeyeater to benefit from recycling
A special partnership has occurred with Landcare Australia meaning that MobileMuster will direct funds to a project restoring habitat for the critically endangered Regent Honeyeater in North Central Victoria. Every mobile that was recycled in August supported Landcare Australia's important work. All brands of mobile phones, plus their batteries, chargers and accessories, were accepted and recycled safely and sustainably. MobileMuster provided a free mobile phone recycling program across Australia, with thousands of drop-off locations or a post back option for easy recycling from home, especially during lockdown. Spyro Kalos, Head of MobileMuster, said the partnership with Landcare provided a perfect opportunity for people to declutter their home, while doubling the environmental benefits. “Those that contributed not only supported Landcare’s work saving the Regent Honeyeater but, helped the planet by recovering valuable resources from old mobiles and accessories to be used again.” Local Victorian Landcare groups will restore remnant Box-Ironbark woodland and habitat for the Critically Endangered
Regent Honeyeater. This will be achieved through the planting of locally sourced indigenous plants including Banksia, Acacia, Allocasuarina and Eucalyptus species to improve landscape connectivity and food availability. The Regent Honeyeater Project Inc. has been working in recent years to create a biolink joining Humphries Hill to Boggy Bridge in the Winton wetlands in north-central Victoria. This project will support a number of threatened species, including the Regent Honeyeater, Squirrel Glider and Brush-Tailed Phascogale. Head of Landcare Services James Walsh, said Landcare Australia’s partnership with MobileMuster is exciting “It will provide vital habitat and food sources for the Critically Endangered Regent Honeyeater,” he said. The Regent Honeyeater is one of Australia’s rarest honeyeaters, a unique songbird on the verge of extinction with an estimated population of 800-2000. Striking black and gold with white scalloped breast pattern this largely nomadic bird will chase the ‘honey’ of flowering trees and shrubs with high nectar output.
MobileMuster is the product stewardship program of the mobile phone industry and accredited by the federal government. It is voluntarily funded by all major handset manufacturers and network carriers to provide a free mobile phone recycling program in Australia to the highest environmental standard. The program is committed to raising awareness and educating the community on why it is important to not only recycle but reuse and repair where possible. Landcare Australia is a national not-for-profit organisation that works in partnership with multiple stakeholders to support the Landcare community with funding and capacity- building opportunities for on-ground projects.

Scooters take to streets in trial Electric scooters can be hired in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Darwin – and one of the leading scooter hire operators hopes to bring the service to Victoria. A State Government pilot program will see a 12-month trial across four council areas, including the City of Ballarat – and AsiaPacific Regional Director at Superpedestrian, Mitch Price, hopes they’re there to stay. “The trial’s actually been on the cards for a few years, we’ve been working for a number of years to try and get the scooters on the streets. What it does mean for people is that the trial sites will be part of a 12-month scheme that will see e-scooters on the streets,” Mr Price said, speaking on ABC radio Ballarat. “We are really advocating for two or three different providers, so that locals can have that option of choice. You’ll be able to go up, scan the QR code on the scooter, and ride around town in Ballarat for example.” Mr Price said the use of scooters to get around busy towns and cities would help decrease traffic. “It does help replace car trips, it helps reduce congestion…we know that major regional
centres like Ballarat are crying out for solutions for transport, especially parking,” he said. “The Superpedestrian e-scooter comes with technology that no other provider out there [has]. It will detect if you are aggressively riding…that report goes through to Council. We also give you a rider safety course. Just like when you’re in an Uber and you get a rating, you’ll get a safety rating from us.” Those that rode dangerously and had a low safety rating will be “kicked off the platform” and unable to use Superpedestrian’s e-scooters. Mr Price suggested that dedicated scooter parking stations at frequently visited places like Sovereign Hill and Mars Stadium would be a good idea, but users could also park on footpaths. The scooters will be allowed in bicycle lanes, shared paths, and low-speed roads up to 50 km/h. They will not be permitted for riding on footpaths, and can travel at up to 20 km/h. Riders will need to wear helmets, and a seated variant will be offered as well as the standard model.

By pushing for vaccine passports, they are advocating for medical segregation, medical apartheid, or to put it more simply, discrimination based on medical status. They are calling for two classes of people. This is unheard of in this country. This is the lucky country. The country without classes. The country where if you work hard, you can make it to the top. The country where everyone gets a ‘fair go’. It’s unfortunate that we don’t seem to have progressed from the days of ‘no blacks allowed’, ‘Catholics need not apply’, ‘Protestants need not apply’. I had hoped we had left those days behind, but sadly, our leaders are working hard to bring it back. Thankfully, there are many broad-minded business owners who are refusing to be trapped into such narrow-minded thinking and are welcoming all customers. To them, I say thank you. In only his second start Catch A Wave validated trainer Andy Gath’s huge opinion of the two-year-old, who was in a class of his own when clearing out to record a 12-metre win in the APG Vic 2YO Gold Sovereign Final. He crashed the line in a 26.5s last 400 metres for reinswoman Kate Gath, which Ladies In Red would top by a 10th the following race to win the Nutrien Agent 3YO Classic by eight metres from stablemate/rival Tough Tilly. That has the reinsman supremely confident for the forthcoming Victoria Oaks. “If she finds a race like this when she finds the front reasonably comfortably, it’s nearly mathematically impossible to beat them really,” Moran said. “As you see like Tough Tilly did in the (Vicbred Super Series) final, it’s just a matter of draws and runs and lead times and things like that that make a big difference. It would be a great race to see them both draw (gates) 11 and 12.”
With the announcement on Sunday of the COVID roadmap for a return to activities, it is clear that community sport will not be able to commence until a fully vaccinated rate of 80 per cent has been achieved, expected to be 5 November 2021. With deep regret, the board of the Ballarat FNL have made the decision to cancel the finals for BFNL Junior and BFLW Youth/Junior competitions. Whilst the board have allowed as much time as possible to play finals, it is now evident this is not possible under the current plan. League chair Adrian Bettio said this decision is one that they knew was coming but “we all wanted to hold out some hope would not eventuate”. “I feel for the kids who just want to get and play with their mates and finish the year with finals,” he said. “We will do everything over the off season to make sure the 2022 season gives everyone the opportunity to play and to catch up on two lost years through COVID.” Mr Bettio said he wants to thank the many club volunteers and parents for their patience, understanding and support of the league and each other, through challenging times. This decision now ends the 2021 seasons for all grades in these competitions. Teams that finished on top of the ladder at the end of the home & away season will be recognised as the minor premiers. “This decision will at least provide certainty to all the junior players, volunteers, and families that the season has concluded,” Mr Bettio said.

Netball calls time on season
A netball league has followed a football league in the decision to cancel their 2021 season, including all finals. Natalie Clark is the Central Highlands Netball League President and said after some discussions with the CHNL and CHFL committees, the CHNL have made the disappointing decision to cancel the finals series for season 2021. “With the Ballarat lockdown and increase in Victorian cases, the chances of getting our finals series finished is too slim to continue,” Ms Clark said. “I know for many this is extremely disappointing and is just another thing that Covid has taken from us over the last 18 months.” Ms Clark said the CHNL Best and Fairest count is still being finalised and more details on that will come in the coming weeks. “I hope that players, parents and club officials understand that this decision did not come lightly and hurts me too. Not only as a mother to one who was due to play finals, but as someone who loves to see people play sport. “I would like to thank the CHNL committee for all of their hard work over the past 18 months. It hasn't been the couple of years I had expected as President, but with the support of an amazing committee we have seen some great netball played and smiles on faces.”
