The Bacchus Marsh Community Coalition (BMCC) is getting back out into the community this month, with a protest planned against PFAS-contaminated soil.

BMCC spokesperson Kat Barlow said the group was expecting close to the 200 protesters currently allowed under COVID regulations, at the 29 May event.

“We’re going to be marching down the Avenue of Honour in a rolling roadblock, to bring attention to the fact that the Government are willing to decimate Victoria’s food bowl by bringing PFAS here,” Ms Barlow told the Moorabool News.

“People are still up in arms; people are distressed that this is a likelihood for Bacchus Marsh. Transurban seem to be running the show, I don’t remember voting for Transurban…it seems the State Government have decided that Transurban are the ones that run the state,” she said.

“Why aren’t they being held accountable for a botched project, and being made to build a purpose-built facility away from harmful receptors for PFAS?” Ms Barlow said there was no dispute about the harmful nature of PFAS, given prior events of contamination.

“We’re currently looking at how PFAS has decimated other areas…I put a social media post up recently about not being able to fish, and if you do catch PFAScontaminated fish, you certainly can’t eat them. That’s happening in the Northern Territory, in our own country, and it’s just being ignored.” she said.

The Community Coalition also plans to protest at the Victorian Parliament in Melbourne on 20 May, while state politicians are discussing the 2021-22 State Budget.

Budget needs to make a MARC

By Lachlan Ellis The State Budget comes out on May 20, and this year, Council has a wish list prepared.

Council CEO Derek Madden said while Moorabool tends to be a tad overlooked in State and Federal Budgets, he was hoping the Andrews Government would be generous in helping the Shire recover post-COVID. “Historically, Moorabool has not been overly recognised through either the State or Federal Budget,” Mr Madden told the Moorabool News.

“Council is now taking the lead in delivering much need infrastructure to the broad community of Moorabool and, is planning on delivering a Capital Improvement Program for 2021/22 of $59.876 million including $18.443 million in works carried forward from the 2020/21 program.”

Mr Madden said these works require extra State and Federal support and will stimulate economic activity post-COVID-19.

“And it will address the historic backlog of works across the Shire. Some of the projects Council is seeking investment for are the Moorabool Aquatic and Recreation Centre (MARC), the Ballan Library and Community Centre, and sewerage for Bungaree and Wallace.”

Mr Meddick said he had lobbied for the Government to get the ball rolling for MARC in the 2021/22 Budget, in his biggest budget bid this year.

Shed load of joy for Noah

By Bianca Roberts (Intern 3rd Yr Melb. Uni) The latest project from a local Men’s shed was unveiled last Friday, and its impact will be life changing.

Inspired by their renovations to Bacchus Marsh Primary School, the Men’s Shed (Bacchus Marsh) custom built a wheelchairfriendly picnic bench for the backyard of student Noah Barlow.

“They are great seats that mean that kids on wheels and ordinary kids can sit together at school lunch time,” Noah’s mother, Kat Barlow said.

“Now he can have his mates in our backyard and be included in the same way.”

The unveil came just in time for Noah’s 11th birthday, which he celebrated last Saturday.

“It means everything, because it means now Noah can hang out properly with his mates, it’s something other people take for granted,” she said.

“He was absolutely stoked,” Ms Barlow said.

John, the original president of the Men’s Shed, said their organisation is pleased with the outcome of the project, which was 15 weeks in the making.

“We like to help the community as much as we can,” he said.

He notes, however, that club meetings do not require participation in physical projects, and men from all walks of life are welcome to hang out at the Men’s Shed. “[We are there] for men’s health, there for chaps to get together and have a good time, do a project if it comes and talk men’s stuff.”

The Men’s Shed meets every Tuesday and Friday from 9am-12pm at The Laurels, 229 Main Street Bacchus Marsh.

Lifeline calls for volunteers

By Bianca Roberts (Intern 3rd Yr Melb Uni) Moorabool citizens are being asked to volunteer for Lifeline Ballarat’s latest suicide prevention program.

The Ballarat Suicide Prevention Place Based Trial, in collaboration with Uniting Vic/Tas is aimed at reducing the incidence of suicide by educating members of the public about the warning signs and ways to de-escalate moments of crisis.

Lifeline Ballarat Manager Jodie Van Schie says suicide is one of the leading causes of death in Australians between the ages of 15 and 44.

“These workshops are about increasing awareness of suicide and how you can help a family member, friend or colleague who you think may be vulnerable,” Ms van Schie said.

There are a number of education sessions available, ranging from 90-minute online courses to comprehensive two-day training courses.

“These are skills everybody needs to know.

We all have a part to play in preventing suicide and education is the key,” Ms Van Schie said.

Belinda Collihole, Community and Corporate Trainer at Lifeline, told the Moorabool News that volunteer Crisis Support workers are also needed to man the

organisation’s 24 hour telephone helpline.

“Every day, our volunteers talk to people in crisis, they provide the support they need at their time of need – they literally save lives,” she said.

Candidate support works provide a nationally-recognised training program that includes over 180 hours of training and student probation.

People who are good listeners, are caring and compassionate and are non-judgmental in nature are encouraged to apply.

Victorian farmers say the Federal Budget is a winner, with the Government pledging millions to support Aussie growers.

On May 12, the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) put out a media release thanking the Federal Government for its support but, said that now their attention had turned to the May 20 State Budget.

VFF President Emma Germano said it’s a step in the right direction after a tough 12 months.

“Agriculture has proven its resilience and it’s pleasing to see this support as we continue to play a major role in our COVID-19 economic fightback.

“Continuing the instant asset write-off to June 2023 is a proven winner for agriculture and we welcome the Federal Government’s investment into agriculture and industry, but now the Victorian Government needs to come to the party.”

Whilst federal roads funding is welcome to help fix the crumbling roads, Ms Germano said, “ultimately we need a significant commitment from the state.”

Fiskville farmer Scott Young said the investment would be huge for Victorian agriculture, and hopefully the State Budget would support farmers too.

“The instant asset write-off is great for businesses to invest and grow, that’ll be great to know that’ll keep going for a bit longer.

Extending that will be big for farmers, I’ve noticed a lot of farm businesses improving infrastructure and equipment,” Mr Young told the Moorabool News.

“It gives farmers a chance to update, and a lot of the new machinery has better safety features, so in a way it’s making our farms more productive and safer,” he said.

As for the State Budget, Mr Young said the VFF have got a wishlist.

“Roads and telecommunications are two big things we’re hoping for more funding for.”

Victorian agriculture makes up more than a quarter of Australia’s food and fibre exports, employs over 87,000 people, and provides $13 billion to the economy.

Aussie rules football, netball, soccer, cricket and tennis will be the beneficiaries from a $4 million investment from the State Government into local facilities.

Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle and Member for Melton Steve McGhie joined Moorabool Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan at the Bacchus Marsh Racecourse Recreation Reserve on Friday 14 May to announce the funding for the Stage 2 3$8.864 million project.

Also in attendance were members of the three tenant clubs at the Recreation Reserve – the Bacchus Marsh Football Netball Club, Cricket and Soccer Clubs.

From the ‘World Game Facilities Fund’ $500,000 has been committed by the Government for two new full-sized soccer pitches, and 100 Lux LED lights. Council will contribute the balance of the $2.4 million project.

In addition, a further $3.5 million grant has been provided under the ‘Community Sports Infrastructure Stimulus Program, for a new Aussie rules/cricket oval and fencing, benches, 100 Lux LED lighting, two netball and two tennis courts, and an All-Abilities Adventure Playground.

Council will pay the remainder $3 million of that project, which will cost just shy of $6.5 million in total.

Ms Settle said it was exciting to deliver the funding for the growing area.

“It’s going to really transform this whole area. I think it’s really going to make a big difference for the wonderful soccer club, and give them a real home they can be proud of,” she said.

“And on top of that, the $3.5 million the State Government is contributing [for football and cricket], being matched by the Council…that kind of money can make big change.

“It’ll really be an extraordinary asset for this area.”

Mr McGhie said while the Recreation Reserve was outside his electorate of Melton, “many constituents from my electorate will come and use this facility”.

“To Michaela, the State and the Council, I just congratulate them on the efforts of putting this program together and coming up with this facility,” he said.

Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan thanked the representatives for their support on behalf of the three clubs that use the Recreation Reserve.

“I think all these things are built upon cooperation and collaboration. No-one can do it individually. I do recall when this place was just a great pile of dirt, but now our plans are coming to fruition. This money will allow us to continue with the next stage,” he said.

“You’ve been a great support for us all the way through, so thank you very much for that, on behalf of Council. It’s a great outcome all round.”

Small disruption for travellers Level crossing removal will see the partial closure of latenight V-Line services from the Monday 17 May to Thursday 20 May. Coaches will replace trains in both directions on the Ballarat line from/to Southern Cross Station from 10pm.

Passengers should allow an additional 60 minutes for their journey.

The Level Crossing Removal Project is a $2.6 billion dollar Andrew government project that aims to remove 75 dangerous and congested level crossings around metropolitan Melbourne.

The project is scheduled to be completed by 2025.

CLARIFICATION Bank closes doors on customers It was reported (M/News 11 May) ANZ confirmed the closure of their Bacchus Marsh branch on social media.

ANZ have told the Moorabool News they contacted their customers individually, not on social media.

The local branch is set to close permanently on 16 June 2021.

Cheers for a cuppa

By Helen Tatchell An idea became a reality when a local Not-ForProfit organization re-connected the Moorabool community over something as simple as a cuppa.

The Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh, in collaboration with Moorabool Shire Council, Djerriwarrh Health Services and Darley Neighbourhood House, held a Seniors Free Morning Tea on Wednesday 5 May, with over 70 in attendance.

A show bag of goodies was also handed out to attendees with Moorabool Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan opening the morning before a short talk by guest speaker Candice Douglass (Infection Control Coordinator DjHS).

President Donna Martin said the group helped set up the Public Hall, organised the food with CWA and volunteers controlled the COVID check in and paperwork.

“It was a good day, with a lot of work behind the scenes to make it successful,” she said.

“Our volunteers worked tirelessly on the day, also serving the cups of tea and coffee and made the floral centre pieces on the tables.”

Cr Sullivan said the morning tea was an opportunity to reconnect after the COVID pandemic.

“A cup of tea is the quintessential Australian thing, even during the time of condolence, it helps to reconnect,” he said.

The morning also had attendees testing their knowledge with some trivia, laughter and a delicious assortment of slices, cakes and sandwiches.

Ms Douglass spoke about the new COVID normal, not shaking hands and washing hands more regularly.

“The new vaccine has been rolled out from May 3 for 50 plus year old’s and is free. It helps protect you and us, from getting sick,” she said.

“It cannot give you COVID and it is a two-dose vaccine.”

Ms Douglass also encouraged attendees to not forget to get their flu shot also.

“This must be a 14-day wait between each,” she said.

High volume COVID vaccine hubs are located at Sunshine, Ballarat and the Melbourne Showgrounds.

Local GPs are also administering flu and COVID vaccines.

•T he Victorian Government has established the COVID-19 Community Activation and Social Isolation initiative (CASI) to help people maintain important connections with family, friends and community and to build new social connections and networks of support in their local communities.

•T he Local Support Network (LSN) formed by Moorabool Shire’s CASI Community Connector consists of many local community groups and organisations to work on projects such as this morning tea, to address social isolation within our community.

•T his morning tea has been made possible by the support of Bacchus Marsh Rotary Club, Darley Neighbourhood House and Djerriwarrh Health Services, who are all members of the LSN.

Speed, but not over the limit

By Lachlan Ellis A 32-year-old man facing a charge of drug possession and two driving charges entered a guilty plea at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court, but claimed he was not told his licence was suspended.

Scott Woodford came before Magistrate Michelle Hodgson on May 7, charged with possessing amphetamine, driving while suspended, and driving an unregistered vehicle.

When pulled over by police last September, Mr Woodford made full admission to possession of amphetamine, but told police he had paid his registration days earlier.

“On Sunday 13 September 2020, the accused was observed driving in westerly direction on the Western Freeway near Bacchus Marsh. He was stopped at a COVID checkpoint and was unable to produce a licence. Further inquiries found the accused was not licenced to drive, and his vehicle was unregistered,” Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Mitchell Prewett said.

“A search of the vehicle found a bag of white powder. The accused informed police that the powder was speed and belonged to him. The accused stated he had paid his registration on 11 September.”

Mr Woodford argued that, while he agreed with Senior Constable Prewett’s summary, VicRoads had told him he “had eight demerit points, but said nothing about my licence being suspended”.

Given his prior history, Magistrate Hodgson found that hard to believe.

“Mr Woodford, you have a history of driving while suspended, you should have known.

They would have sent you correspondence…if you don’t read it and you don’t know, well, the ball is in your court.

“Amphetamines are not going to improve your life, they’re only going to deteriorate it,” Magistrate Hodgson said.

For the possession charge, Mr Woodford was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond, while the driving charges earned him a penalty of $1500.

Moor space for bold new art

Uni) The Moor Art space at the Lederderg Library, Bacchus Marsh, is featuring a bold new collection of artwork during the month of May. “Kinks and other Imperfections”, by Darley resident Sarah Nikolajsen, is a mixed-medium exhibit featuring painting, drawing, ceramic and bronze works.

The Denmark born 26-year-old, who has been an avid artist for as long as she can remember, told the Moorabool News this exhibition provides an intimate account of her identity and its development.

‘It’s a self-dialogue between my vanity and who I want to be as a person, as well as my struggles with my sexuality,’ says Nikolajsen, who identifies as bisexual.

She says she has struggled to develop a definitive sense identity, even within the LGBTIQA+ community.

‘Bisexuality is a funny thing because you can pass as a heterosexual, but you’re not, and people don’t really believe you [that you are different],” Sarah said.

“But I’ve never really cared that much about what people think.”

And indeed, her exhibit is a rebellion against stereotypical ideals of gender and sexuality.

A fan of ‘LARPing’ (Live Action Role Play), for years she has played the game “Dungeons and Dragons” with friends, which involves play-

acting scenarios through mythical personas, often in costume.

It was through this role-playing that she began to question her own identity, as well as the gender stereotypes that pervade our subconscious.

During her teenage years, she noticed that her female peers began to gravitate towards pretty, demure characters such as elves.

“For them, how to attract other men was the primary goal.

“For me that was futile: that’s not what I want.”

Instead she began experimenting with less popular characters such as goblins, which she appreciates for their unruliness and subversion of classic beauty standards.

She found that exploring these characters through role play and art have provided the means to deconstruct societies standard of perfection and offer, in place, an honest account of humanity, in all its imperfection.

“These characters are not the usual for a girl,” Nikolajsen said.

“When I’ve played this character, I’ve been playing with the ugliness in humanity.

“They are manifestations of me… and the idea we have kinks and imperfections in our personalities.”

What’s next for this young budding artist?

She is hoping to continue developing her skills in ceramic work, with plans to sell mugs adorned with 3D projections of dragons and goblins at upcoming local markets.

Centuries of service to health

By Helen Tatchell A combined total of 435-years spread across 26-volunteers, received awards for their services to Djerriwarrh Health Services for the years 2019 and 2020.

Recipients of 10, 15, 20, 25 and even 40-years of volunteering with DjHS were acknowledged.

The volunteer luncheon held at the Bacchus Marsh Golf Club, also thanked retiring volunteers in 2019 and 2020, totalling 161.

There are currently 175 active volunteers on the DjHS list.

Tony McNamara (CEO DjHS) said people volunteer for lots of reasons and the COVID-19 pandemic affected all facets of our lives during the last 18-months.

“It is about serving our community. Volunteers and health go hand-in-hand, so grateful for everything you do,” he said.

“The pandemic has challenged our health service and has impacted the way we deliver care and provide support to our community.

“But the resilience and ability of you, our volunteers, has never faded,” he said.

Mr McNamara said DjHS volunteers have been pivotal in the delivery of their services during these challenging times.

“Meals-on-Wheels, Community Register, Friendly Visiting and Palliative Care Support programs were all delivered by you the volunteer, within the challenges of COVID protocols,” he said.

“Djerriwarrh Health Services thanks you and appreciates everything you have done in providing compassion and great support, helping make a huge difference to many people’s lives in our community.”

Property valuations may increase rates

By Lachlan Ellis ‘Ripley’s Believe it or Not’, Werribee Vale Road is open.

After 14-months after works began, the Maddingley road is back open to the public – and it’s sporting some serious improvements.

The road, which relieves traffic from the notoriously busy Grant Street and Gisborne Road in Bacchus Marsh, has been closed since February 2020, with the initial completion date of works planned for June last year.

But a myriad of issues, from the COVID pandemic lowering working hours, to unstable soil conditions and asbestos in overburden soils, saw the project delayed five times from July 2020 to August 2020, then the end of 2020, and a final promise of March 2021.

The road was re-opened in late April this year, with 700 metres of road upgraded, the road being widened to seven metres, construction of kerbs and a channel, and improvements to the underground drainage system.

Council CEO Derek Madden said Council was happy to have the road open after the unfortunate delays.

“We’re very pleased Werribee Vale Road is again open to the public, and we thank local residents and motorists for their patience while this work was ongoing, as we had some unexpected delays,” Mr Madden told the Moorabool News.

“The result is we now have a much safer road and footpaths for motorists and pedestrians, which was our top priority in doing this work.”

There was also significant improvement to landscape amenity between Werribee Vale Road and the Werribee River, with over 20,000 native plants planted as part of the project.

A retaining wall was added to stabilise the embankment south of the road, with Council stating that the earthworks were the “primary cause to the project’s delay”.

A total of $1.8 million was invested into the upgrade.

Farmers in Moorabool should be a little bit nervous after a social media report indicated a 10 per cent on average, rate rise because of soaring property prices.

The report by ABC Wimmera said the Horsham Rural City Council proposed a 1.5 per cent rate rise at its budget meeting on 26 April – but farm property values increased by nearly 23 per cent more than residential properties in 2020, putting a much bigger rates burden on farmers than non-farmers.

This prompted concerns Moorabool farmers may suffer a similar rates hike.

Moorabool Shire Mayor Cr Tom Sullivan said it was hard to know whether Council would vote for a rate increase in the 2021/22 Budget, but it was clear the rating system needed reform.

“The Government in my view has to consider, do they want farming in peri-urban areas or not? The process that we have, and how rates are assessed, is not really working in peri-urban areas like Moorabool,” Cr Sullivan told the Moorabool News.

“People in the farming areas pay tens of thousands of dollars in rates…when they do their budget, let’s say their rates were $15,000 for argument’s sake, and maybe they anticipate a five or ten per cent increase…if all of a sudden it doubles, well, they have to find that extra money.

“The assessment is made up on the valuation, which is a figure that doesn’t necessarily indicate the capacity of a landowner to pay it. The person may not have a lot of equity in their place anyway, the bank might own most of it, they might be paying interest on their mortgage.

“I think it’s a fairly cumbersome approach to generating rates, to be honest.”

The Fair Go Rates system’s rate capping means that the maximum allowed rate increase – at least without a Council application to the Essential Services Commission – will be 1.5 per cent.

“Council is not likely to go down that path [applying for a rate increase over 1.5 per cent], but at this juncture it’s hard to say what Councillors may or may not do, whether they support even the 1.5 per cent increase, or a zero per cent increase,” Cr Sullivan said.

The draft budget for the 2021/22 Budget is now out for community feedback after Councillors approved the recommendation at the Ordinary Meeting of Council on 5 May, for it to go out for public consultation.

The Valuer-General is the Victorian Government’s authority on statutory valuations. The Valuer-General oversees valuations for Victorian Government property transactions and rating valuations. This includes valuations for council rates and land tax assessments.

Ability to jump more than puddles

By Lachlan Ellis Kelly Frost grew up around horses and wasn’t going to let injuries from a car crash, nor disability stop her from riding – and the Gordon battler has recently won gold for her efforts.

Twenty years ago, Ms Frost was involved in a head-on collision in Coimadai at the age of 15, which put her in intensive care at the Royal Children’s Hospital.

The accident left her with small head and leg impairments, but in 2017, a stent, installed to help her recover from an aneurysm on her heart, cut off the blood supply to her legs and spinal cord, causing a major spinal stroke, brain stroke and heart attack.

This, in turn, resulted in Ms Frost becoming a T10 incomplete paraplegic, with doctors telling her she had just a two per cent chance of regaining movement in her legs, beyond the limited movement she gained in rehab.

Despite all this, Ms Frost remains an optimist, thankful to be alive, be able to watch her kids grow up, and “still be me”.

And she has well and truly ‘got back on the horse’.

Ms Frost and her horse, Charlie, competed in the Equestrian Australia Para Dressage National Championships at Boneo Park Equestrian Centre, which involves riding two dressage tests in front of judges – one individual test and one team test.

In the individual test, Ms Frost scored a 63.772, and a 60.926 in the team test – being named the Grade 3 Para Equestrian event for 2021 on April 10. Around 15 riders from Equine Pathways competed, with events held from Grade 1 through to 5.

Ms Frost told the Moorabool News she already has bigger plans for the future.

“Next on the horse-riding front is lots of training and clinics with my coach Julia, and the other coaches/providers at Equine Pathways, in preparation for my next event in

November. I am also working on my campaign towards representing Australia at the Paris Paralympics in 2024, provided the world doesn’t go crazy again,” she said.

“I have a very strong mindset and decided from day one I wasn’t going to let my disability change my way of life…I wanted to live as full a life as possible, I wanted to get back to my kids and family, and my one horse at the time…I now have five.

“I have ridden horses since I was three, and that was something I wasn’t giving up. Horse riding is very important to me for my health, happiness and fitness…it makes me feel like my old self up there, no disability,” she said.

While her headstrong spirit plays a big part in her riding, Ms Frost said she couldn’t do it without support.

“I’d like to thank my husband Andrew and my kids, as well as Equine Pathways Australia for all their help along the way,” she said.

New captain for brigade

The Greendale Fire Brigade has a new Captain, and he’s eager to get on with the job and connect with the community.

March 25 was a big day for Brandon Lebehen, who was unanimously voted Captain, celebrated his 28th birthday, and picked up his 15 Year Service Award, all on the same day.

Elections are normally held every two years, and Greendale Fire Brigade were meant to hold theirs in 2020. However, the COVID pandemic meant the elections were delayed until this year.

Mr Lebehen commenced his role immediately following the election, and will remain Captain of the Moorabool Brigade until the next election in 2022.

“It’s great to have the support of the members here, I’ve always been heavily involved in the management of the Brigade,” Mr Lebehen told the Moorabool News.

“I’m very passionate about the Greendale Fire Brigade. I decided it’d be good for a young prospective to come in and have a go.

“Serving our community is my priority, one hundred percent, and supporting the health and wellbeing of our members,” he said.

Mr Lebehen joined the Greendale Fire Brigade as a junior back in December 2005, completing his junior membership in April 2009 and serving as Secretary from 2012 to 2014. He has also served as a Group Delegate for the Ballan Group of Brigades since 2018.

He is one of Greendale’s key responders, and also responds with the Ballan Fire Brigade when working in the area.

Placing the wrong items in recycling bins is an issue across Australia, but Moorabool Shire Council is introducing a new ‘bin tagging’ initiative to educate and reward locals who do the right thing.

By Lachlan Ellis A 43-year-old Bacchus Marsh man who was caught driving over the blood alcohol limit, and with cannabis in his system, has copped a four-figure fine and two years off the road.

Matthew Riley appeared before Magistrate Michelle Hodgson at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on 7 May, representing himself.

Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Mitchell Prewett told the court Mr Riley had blown 0.069 on November 22, 2019, and an oral fluid test detected delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol in his system – more commonly known as ‘THC’, the main component in cannabis that generates a high.

“The accused was asked for his reason, he said ‘No reason, smoked weed this morning’,” Senior Constable Prewett said.

Riley told the court it was just a stupid mistake.

“Since that day I haven’t smoked weed, I’ve still had a couple of drinks here and there. It took about 3-months, it was about March 16 last year [before he was served with the suspension]. As of that day I received a loss of licence on the spot,” he said.

Given a prior case of substance-related offending in 2011, Magistrate Hodgson handed down a hefty penalty.

“You’re 43 years old, you’ve come before the court for a second time in relation to a substance offence. A licence is a privilege, not a right. You tell me that you have given up smoking cannabis, and that is a positive measure. There are a number of penalties I can apply…you haven’t been before the court for 10 years, so I believe you have strong potential for rehabilitation,” she said.

“You’ll be disqualified from driving for at least 24 months.

You will be required, before you get your licence back, to attend a behavioural change program, and you will have to have an interlock fitted. I have no discretion on the period of suspension, that’s the minimum. It will run until March next year.”

Mr Riley also received a $1000 fine for his offending.

The 2019 ‘Don’t Waste Your Waste’ study found that 94 per cent of Australians make recycling mistakes, despite 60 per cent being “extremely confident” in their recycling habits.

But Council’s bin tagging program aims to improve the local situation, with Council recycling bins to be inspected to ensure items put in them are actually recyclable.

And those that ace the inspections will go into the running for a prize.

“As part of the inspection program, bins that contain nonrecyclable items will be tagged with a red ticket containing helpful information on what can and cannot go in their yellow lid bin. Those who are doing the right thing will be tagged with a green ticket congratulating them on the good job they’re doing. Residents who get green tags will go into a draw to win a $50 voucher to a local business,” Moorabool Shire Council’s Coordinator Sustainable Environment, Caroline Rantall, explained.

Ms Rantall said Council and ratepayers, face increased costs for contamination from materials that should not be in recycling bins.

“To stop recycling heading back to landfill in the future, Council needs the help of everyone to only put the correct recyclables in yellow lid bins.”

Non-recyclable materials that are placed in recycling bins are also a health hazard to processing facility workers, as these materials need to be removed from hand and can jam up machinery.

Non-recyclables that are commonly put into yellow bins incorrectly include bagged recyclables, soft plastics/plastic bags, unrinsed containers and food waste.

Money raised for a ‘no-cure’ disease

By Bianca Roberts (Intern 3rd Year Melb Uni) For the small entry fee of $5, the women of Bacchus Marsh kicked off their Mother’s Day celebrations with a glass of bubbly and the knowledge they have made a difference to women across the country.

This was all thanks to Ray White Real Estate in Bacchus Marsh, who on 7 May hosted a Mother’s Day charity event to raise funds for Endometriosis Australia.

“We sort of thought it’s something that a lot of women have but it’s not really recognised,” Karen from Ray White told the Moorabool News.

Endometriosis, a painful condition caused by overgrowth of uterine tissue, and affects an estimated 11 per cent of Australian women.

Women with the condition are at risk of infertility and at present there is no cure.

“We are raising money so that research into this disease can one day help to end the suffering of women with endometriosis,” a spokesperson for Ray White said.

An “amazing” turnout of over 70 local ladies raised over $4091 through entry fees, silent-auctions and private donations. Items for auction were donated by local businesses in the Bacchus Marsh community.

“It was really great to see how the community supported us. Everyone we approached was willing to help,” Karen said.

“From all the girls at Ray White Bacchus Marsh, we would like to thank everyone for their support.”

MP doing all she can A sign in a paddock, telling power company AusNet to “piss off” and asking a Federal MP of her whereabouts, has prompted a social media response from the Member for Ballarat.

Catherine King, who represents the Division of Ballarat in the House of Representatives, posed in front of the sign, which reads “piss off AusNet, Catherine King where the hell are you!”

“Here I am!” she wrote on the 5 May social media post.

“I am not in hiding from your concerns about the proposed Western Victorian Transmission Network Project (WVTNP).

I was in Smeaton in my mobile office on 27 March and everyone in the area was invited to speak with me via a letter mailed to all households. Several people concerned about this issue took me up on that offer and visited me at my Clunes and Creswick Mobile Office that weekend. I was also in Kingston, Smeaton and Daylesford yesterday talking with community groups.

“This is a beautiful, productive part of the world. While new transmission lines do need to be built to connect renewable energy into the electricity grid, this is not the way to do it.”

Ms King said she had held meetings with AusNet and written to various key decision makers, including the Federal Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, the Australian Energy Regulator, and the Victorian Planning Minister, raising concerns about the project.

“In meetings I have held with Ausnet, the company contracted to build these transmission lines, I have repeatedly raised the concerns of the community and called

- Catherine King MP on those building the project to engage more meaningfully with landholders and with the local councils along the route,” Ms King said.

“In particular, those behind the project should seriously consider the possibility of the powerlines going underground, particularly through fire prone areas. While this would be considerably more expensive, it would deliver a better final outcome for communities along the route. If this requires extra government funding, that is something that should be explored.

Ms King said when the project was first announced, she wrote to the Minister for Energy and Emissions Reduction, Angus Taylor to raise concerns about the lack of consultation and engagement with the community, and to request further consideration of the power lines going underground.

“I have also written to the Australian Energy Regulator to support community concerns regarding the regulatory process used to determine this project.”

Ms King concluded by saying she was always happy to arrange meetings or calls with concerned locals.

Dear Editor, In attempting to use the pedestrian crossing in Ballan near the Ballan Health centre to access its services, I was ignored by car drivers both times I had to cross the road at a signed and white lined pedestrian crossing.

Even with the installed road humps to slow traffic, people still often ignore you.

The town is becoming increasingly busy, especially now at weekends.

Why did Ballan not get flashing lights when the two crossings were installed in the main street, the same as those in Main Street, Bacchus Marsh, who have four?

Helen Fernandez Gordon Dear Editor, It is always refreshing to hear the moral dissertations of people who do not have the courage or integrity to name themselves, such as “Name and Address Supplied”, (MN 20 April 21. Especially when they clearly know more about me than I do myself.

‘NaAS’ accuses me of doing no research. quoting AusNet AMS10-77. He/she fails to mention that the document lists only one fire, which did NOT result in a bushfire. It is also worth noting from AusNet Program of Works, 2017-2022 is that there have been only 5 tower failures in the last 63yrs, of which only resulted one in a fire, which was NOT a bushfire. Likewise, as ‘NaAS’ noted the Cressy failure did NOT result in a fire.

If ‘NaAS’ had done their research they would have found that Energy Safe Vic found that “In the case of the failure of the 115 kV transmission line that allegedly caused devastating wildfires in California in 2018, the reports reviewed by ESV noted that the cause was allegedly related to poor, or a lack of, maintenance. In Victoria, the transmission system is inspected and maintained in accordance with the accepted ESMS and BFM plans of the MEC.” This includes mandatory 37mthly inspections.

The same report also stated that “ESV noted that there are no recorded bushfires started by a 500 kV overhead line in Victoria”. Ever!

‘NaAS’ also thinks they have access to my diary. But I have attended one of these

meetings and the level of anger expressed towards me included insults and threats.

And as yet no one has denied the lies about the height of the towers, or the campaign to blame the state government etc. Sadly, this is just more evidence of the attempt to railroad a real issue with politically motivated bull s---t.

Call for government to ‘hurry up’ An alliance of more than 40 state, national and international environmental groups have demanded the Andrews Government “hurry up” in an open letter, calling for more parks across the state.

The alliance, led by local community conservation group Wombat Forestcare, put a series of full page adds in six papers across the key regional centres of Bendigo, Ballarat, Castlemaine, Moorabool, Daylesford and Macedon, including the Moorabool News.

A two-year investigation by the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council (VEAC) led to recommendations for areas of the public forests of Wombat, Wellsford, Mt Cole and Pyrenees Ranges in central western Victoria to become National or Regional Parks.

The group argue that the Andrews Government is more than 12 months late on making a decision on the forests, which would provide protections for the wildlife that live there.

“The Wombat forest has so many values that need protecting; the headwaters of six major rivers, many rare and threatened species and the storage of carbon,” Wombat Forestcare’s Gayle Osborne said.

“How long do we have to wait for the Victorian government to take nature protection issues seriously?”

Victorian Minister for Energy, Environment and Climate Change, Lily D’Ambrosio, said in 2017 that “the Victorian Government has an ambitious environmental agenda and is prioritising the care and

protection of our natural environment” – but Ms Osborne says the sentiment “is merely nice words on glossy paper until we see real commitment to protection for these special places”.

While the National Parks would remain open to visitors, activities such as hunting and collecting plants would be banned and, bringing a dog (other than an assistance dog) or horse into a park would require a permit from Parks Victoria.

Wendy Radford is from Bendigo and representative of the Wellsford Forest Conservation Alliance saying the pandemic had shown people how important nature was to Victorians.

“COVID showed us how valued our forests and natural places are to communities. People in Bendigo have overwhelmingly said that they want the Wellsford Forest protected from logging and mining,” Ms Radford said.

“The Central West Investigation conducted by VEAC was an exemplary expert process and the recommendations were supported by communities. What is the hold up?”

A website has been established by the groups, createnewparks.org. au, which invites groups and individuals to add their name to the open letter in support of the implementation of new parks.

Among the current signatories are the WWF, National Trust Victoria, and Moorabool’s own Bacchus Marsh Platypus Alliance.

The Cross-Country meet was held at the Myrniong Recreation Reserve and whilst all races started in the reserve grounds, athletes exited through the northern gate, running out along Shuter Street prior to tackling the long grinding hill up Blackwood Street.

The Under 7 & 8 athletes, competing over a 1km distance, saw Angus Norman take the early lead with Harry Holland closing down the gap in the later stages of the event. With just over a 100m to go, Harry made the decisive move to take the lead and cross the finish line in first place. Annie Clarke was first across the line for the girls, finishing 3rd overall.

The Open Age athletes found the hilly course challenging. Matthew Elefterescu returned to the winners list, while Oliver Carr was 2nd across the finish line. Back from injury, Elise Cook was next home in 3rd place overall, 1st female.

The Under 9 & 10s contested a 1500m course with Harrison Lovett taking victory over a much-improved Ezekiel Horne.

Myah Estlick ran a superb race and stayed in touch with the boys, to finish only 2 seconds behind the winner.

Melton athletes once again claimed the top 3 placegetters in the Under 6 500m event. Mason Wapshott took line honours, while Grace Bennett was close behind in 2nd place followed

by Fletcher Reid in 3rd.

The standout performance for the weekend came from Riley Rogers who dominated the 2km event for the Under 11 and

predicted would be, “pretty tough opposition”. That’s exactly what his team experienced throughout the entire match, in front of another huge body of spectators. On a perfect surface the Eagles made it five from five to maintain their unbeaten start to the season.

Injuries last week to Zack Ryan, Michael Nolan, Isaac McCabe and Andrew Siekai made way for the return of Daniel Pascoe, Ben Frazer and Shannon Byrnes, along with first gamer, Dylan Watt. Dylan is son of Coach Ron and showed he will be an asset with his run, skill and knowledge of the game.

The match started at a frantic pace with both sides surging forward putting defences under pressure. The home side appeared a little more organised moving into its scoring area and kicked three goals. Gordon on the other hand had many chances to score but wayward kicking limited its tally to just ten points.

Powered by the clearance work of Tye Murphy, Luke Gunnell and Jordan Clampit, the Eagles clawed their way closer to the hard-working Bombers. Scoring became difficult with defences taking control and the play seesawing between the 50-metre arches. Buninyong defended to the dead side of the oval for much of the quarter and held a slender one-point advantage at half time.

The slugging match continued throughout the third quarter and a close finish looked the likely outcome. That was until young gun Connor Ascough, on an acute angle, dribbled the ball through for an exciting goal. From that moment the Eagles lifted and went on to play the game on their terms.

The large number of Eagle on-ballers rotating off the bench took a noticeable toll on their opponents. The experienced defence displayed confidence and composure, while the forwards finally broke free to register six last term goals.

The Eagles remain perched on top of the CHFL ladder and head into next week’s bye pleased, but by no means complacent. They will recharge and prepare for their next challenge against the club’s oldest foe Dunnstown at The Nest on May 29. Gordon first played Dunnstown on 16 June 1894. In Round 4 of the Ballarat Basketball season, Ballan Brumbies U14 girls, coming off a thumping 40 point loss, took on Drummo Dragons.

In the early stages, quick whistles saw Stella McLeod in early foul trouble, the lefty forced to take a seat on the bench. Dragons centre Elizabeth Morrison was proving a huge issue for Ballan, the Drummo star scoring 13 of her 17 points in the 1st half. Despite that, the Brumbies were able to stay close through just enough offense from McLeod and Carly McCausland, trailing 18-14.

Drummo came out firing in the 2nd half. Morrison scored 6 points in a 9-0 run to extend the margin to 15. A tactical switch saw Sarah Burton move onto Morrison and her speed brought Morrison’s influence to an almost complete stop. With their star held, the Dragons were swamped on defence, McCausland and Chloe Newton picking up numerous steals, McLeod and Neve Eskdale controlling the defensive boards.

Ballan were able to push the pace through Ruby McLeod and Sarah Burton - 12 of her game high 18 points came in the 2nd half. Crisp passing on the fast break saw Ballan get to the basket at will to come storming back into the game with 4 minutes to play.

Drummo steadied to stop the Brumbies running away with the contest, though Ballan prevailed 39-35 in a stunning comeback.

Showdown looms for final Svanosio-trained horses in the heat, with favourite Brandlo Prince finishing fourth after sitting behind the leader throughout.

By Shaun Campbell (HRV) Trotters have locked horns at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night for a shot at Group 2 glory and, if the heats are any indication, this weekend’s final is going to be a thriller.

“(Brandlo Prince is) not really a sit-sprint horse, he has to be out doing it tough and when he got the sprint lane it wasn’t really suited to him,” French said.

The two heats of the Aldebaran Park Vicbred Platinum Metropolitan Trot were decided by a neck and half-head, with Teetreetommy setting the home straight alight with a last-to-first victory in the first heat and Anywhere Hugo holding off a late challenge in the second.

“I said before the race to the rest of the stable I was Team Hughie tonight and I was pretty confident if I led that I’d be pretty hard to run down.”

Anywhere Hugo will join Teetreetommy and other heat qualifiers in the $30,000 Group 2 final at Melton this Saturday night, with the meeting jam-packed with features including the Group 3 Allied Express Richmond Lass and Group 3 TAB Derby Royale Trotters Free For All.

Teetreetommy settled towards the tail of the field and driver Anne-Maree Conroy bided her time before unleashing the Julius Caesar gelding around the turn to grab leader Peregrine Phoenix on the line in a 2:00.5 mile rate.

“(The first heat) was run probably upside down to the second heat; the speed was on early, and they sort of walked over the line whereas we didn’t go slow early but were able to hold an even tempo through the whole run,” French said.

Conroy said piloting the “big awkward” seven-year-old around the last bend was a delicate balancing act.

“He was hanging a bit and it was hard to keep him balanced around the corner,” she told Trots Vision after the race.

“When he was able to navigate that corner and then straighten out, he could get home really quickly.”

Conroy said gate four was usually considered a good draw, but she didn’t go out on to the track care-free.

“He takes a little while to wind up and he’s not overly quick out of the start,” she said.

“When I drew four, I was a little bit worried about it … because he might get caught wide ... so I was lucky the horse inside did

In the second heat, Anywhere Hugo used his early speed to lead from the pole, with driver Tayla French able to set an even tempo before holding off a late challenge from Nephew Of Sonoko in a 1:59.9 mile rate.

“When I saw Nephew Of Sonoko coming I

knew he would be one of my main dangers; he’s a horse that always knuckles right down to the line,” French told Trots Vision after the race.

“But Hugo, he actually kept fighting him the whole way and for the last 200 metres he didn’t let him go past.”

Swans sink Devils

Darley Football Club v Ballarat Darley were unable to impact late with the breeze against Ballarat on Saturday before succumbing to a sharper Swans outfit to the tune of 32-points at Alfredton Oval.

But it wasn’t without effort from a limited group riddled with injury and a glaring lack of height and prowess through the spine. The Devils have already fielded 35 players in just four games, highlighting the unsettled nature of a line-up who are still weeks away from realising its best 22.

In the meantime, games into youth and more importantly their development within time spent, should hold the Devils in good stead with a look into the future. But for now, development aside, it’s a hard watch for a club who hasn’t missed the finals in ten years.

After losing the toss the Devils were forced into the breeze in the opening term and were made to play catch up for the duration. After responding well in the second term, the Devils found themselves in the game at the main break as they have done for three of their four games. Devils’ midfielder Jake Ancrum along with youngsters Jack Bewley and Dylan Beecham sparked the revival to see them within four points.

Darley’s young defenders Blake Colley, Duncan Cadman and Nash Reynolds denied the Swans in the third term, restricting their more fancied rivals to just three goals for the term. Unfortunately, key back Matthew Brett copped a nasty cork and had to be pushed forward, hopeful more than anything he could have an impact dee, in a last roll of the dice scenario.

The final term started disastrously for the spasmodic Devils with the breeze after they conceded the opening two goals, before a rallied response led by x-factor Werribee affiliate Ryan Kemp who kicked two of his four goals. The Matthew Brett move forward almost paid off after a terrific mark and goal helped draw the Devils within 13 points nearing time on. When a Mitch Banner shot on goal missed to narrow the margin to seven, the Swans raised the bar late to boot three goals in junk time to run away 32-point winners that felt more like to many, a two - three goal game.

Swans’ midfielder Daniel Kennedy was the best man on the ground while captain Sam James (three goals) and Sam Drever (three goals) did the damage on the goal front. Tall timber duo Marcus Powling and Bailey Van de Heuval thrived against the Devils with their clear height advantage and were able to distribute both from the air and by foot at will for the most part. Mitch Martin, whose execution by foot, would rival anyone’s in the BFNL, was again a feature.

Cobra venom strikes Lions

Bacchus Marsh Football v Redan Bacchus Marsh has outgunned a powerless Redan to run out convincing 55-point winners at City Oval on the weekend.

So much so, the depleted Lions without Dean Chester (10 goals/3 games), Izaac Grant (9 goals/3), Liam Hoy (6 goals/3) and Alex Harvey, were held goalless after the opening minute of the game as Cobras duo Jake Owen (five goals) and Aaron Willetts (three goals) took full advantage at the other end to help move the club into third place on the BFNL ladder, ahead of their timely bye in Round 6.

After an arm wrestle of sorts in the opening half, the Cobras began to assert their authority heading into the main break on the back of midfield dominance, dour defence and a much more effective forward set up. While the Cobras missed a few chances of their own, the writing was on the wall that a prevailing pattern of entry would soon equate to better returns.

Lions star midfielder Lachie George ran off the hook early before in vogue shutdown specialist Logan Blundell entered the fray, curbing the former Williamstown product having the game solely on his terms. Cobra’s youngster Alex Porter continued with his rich vein of form, his ability to take the game on with a growing confidence must be pleasing for coach Tom German who continues the search from within to build on an armory capable of holding up at the business end.

Owen and Willetts or Batman and Robin if you dare label the duo, continue to be the envy of most clubs. The Cobras two key pronged attack are fit, mobile, inform and are benefitting from a greater spread of entries from their high half forward counterparts and improving midfield. Daniel Burton, Tom German and Tyson Shea again featured prominently and are

proving a more difficult assignment to contain by the week as the synergy with Burton after an absent year continues to grow.

The Cobras win was soured by the shoulder injury to ball magnet Nick Stuhldrier in the second quarter who took no further part in the game. From the outside, ahead of scans it reeks of an extended period on the sidelines. When Billy Griffiths (ankle) innocuously went down off the ball in the third term never to be seen again, there was some concern of a Lions revival given the Cobras were down two rotations.

But alas, the Lions had injury concerns of their own. Keenan Waterbury (hamstring), Brandon Green (hamstring), and later Nick Barker (corky) and playing coach Jarrett Giampaolo who required seven stitches in his knee. The post covid season has been brutal on all BFNL clubs in 2021 and hasn’t discriminated. To quote ladder leader North Ballarat City coach Brendan McCartney at the start of the season, he may well be right. “Whoever has the best run with injuries will go a long way to winning this year’s premiership,” he said.

The Cobras midfield will enjoy a much deserved week off to rest their bodies. They alone have repeatedly upped the ante on the Cobras physical pressure around the ball led by German and 200 game veteran Tyson Shea.

The win on the road was significant in more ways than one, ending a losing drought of highway travel dating back to August 18, 2018.

Tyson Shea was unflappable in the realisation in the aftermath.

“Not winning in Ballarat since 2018 is nothing, I’ve never won at City Oval in 15 years,” he said.

The Cobras will be buoyed by the return of Jayden Owen, Harry King and Daniel Veldon after the bye having all missed at the weekend.

Bacchus Marsh’s next game is against North Ballarat at Mars Stadium in Round 7 (Saturday May 29).

No ONE team in the BFNL has been able to win coming off the bye in 2021.

WHAT THE COACHES SAID

OVERALL?: GIAMPAOLO (Redan): A wasteful first half denied us any momentum. GERMAN (B/Marsh): We didn’t have a bad player at all, we’ve had a good couple of weeks.

Rate your DEFENCE: GIAMPAOLO - Our defenders did well given the pressure they were under. When the midfield is getting beaten as ours was it makes it extremely difficult.

GERMAN - Very good, been a solid staple for us all year.

Rate your MIDFIELD: GIAMPAOLO - Good battle early on but ours was well beaten on the day. GERMAN - We won the battle through the midfield and I was most pleased with our spread. We ran some new faces through there, after we lost Nick Stuhldrier (shoulder) in the second term.

Rate your FORWARDS: GIAMPAOLO - It was a tough one for us. With our four leading forwards missing we had players filling unfamiliar roles and we couldn’t keep it in or impact the scoreboard for any periods. GERMAN - Owen and Willetts were good again with their goal returns. Our high half forwards gave them space and opportunities with their entries, and we kicked the goals that mattered.
