Good innings for brothers By Lachlan Ellis and Chris Thom Ballan’s Snaith brothers have hit more than a six at the recent Ballarat Cricket Association (BCA) Awards, claiming a coveted Medal and a Champion Player award between them. Lachie Snaith won the Bernie Davey Medal – judged the 2nd Grade’s best player for the 2020/21 season by BCA umpires – while his 24-year-old brother Michael, tied for 2nd Grade Champion Player. The 22-year-old was awarded 17 votes by the umpires; four votes clear of equal second Matt Swards (Golden Points) and Michael Knight (VRI Delacombe) on 13 votes. On the other hand, the Champion Player is decided by performance stats, with 1 point awarded per run, 10 points per assisted wicket, 15 points per unassisted wicket, 5 points per catch, 5 points per assisted runout, 15 points per unassisted runout, 10 points per stumping, 20 points per 100 runs and 20 points per 5 wicket innings.
Michael Snaith and Jeromy Johnston (VRI Delacombe) tied for 2nd Grade Champion Player on 781 points. Both brothers were humble in acknowledging their achievements. “It was a big surprise really; I went to the night not expecting much at all. I was speechless, probably the most nervous I’ve ever been,” Lachie told the Moorabool News. “I’ve probably been a touch more consistent this season, but I reckon I had a better season last season, which is probably a bit of a funny thing to say…I didn’t have an unreal year to be honest, but the consistency making 30 or 40 runs nearly every week probably helped, plus getting a few wickets with the ball.” Michael was surprised by his award too, but was full of praise for his younger brother, describing Lachie’s Bernie Davey Medal win as “a special moment” for the Snaith family. “It was a bit of a shock [being named Champion Player],
it probably wasn’t my best year and probably wasn’t our best year as a team either, we missed out on finals. A nice achievement on a personal level, but a bit bittersweet,” Michael said. “But it was a very special moment [seeing Lachie win the Bernie Davey Medal], our family was all there. He deserved it, he had an amazing year and has probably been knocking on the door for the last couple of years as one of the league’s better players in the division, so it was just rewards for all his hard work and effort.” Lachie Snaith is the fifth Ballan player to have won the Bernie Davey Medal, with Chris Mullane (dual winner), Noel Heafield, Cam Dunne and Michael Snaith having won it in previous years. This is the second Champion Player award Michael Snaith has won, with his first earned after a stellar 2018/19 season in which he also took the Bernie Davey home to Ballan. The award ceremony was held on 24 March at the Ballarat Golf Club.
