New Community Leaders

By Lachlan Ellis Graduates from Council’s Community Leadership Program were finally able to celebrate their accomplishment with a graduation dinner, having finished the program on Friday 19 March.

Eight participants were awarded with certificates at the Great Western Hotel in Ballan after completing the free 18week program, with three unable to attend.

As last year’s program was done during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, all but one session was completed online via Zoom – though this year’s promises to include more in-person sessions.

Beyond successfully completing the program, participants implemented new community programs within their local community, including increasing digital literacy skills for older people, improving local food security, and establishing a local environmental group.

Bill Saunders was one of the graduates, and though he isn’t a newcomer to running community programs, he said he saw value in participating in the Leadership Program both for experienced leaders like himself, and those who were just starting.

“I had a particular objective in joining the program, I’m a director of a charity called Horses for Hope. We do equineassisted therapy, which uses horses to help people with mental health issues…we’ve been operating for 15 years and we’re setting up a new operation here in Moorabool,” Mr Saunders said.

“My reasoning behind getting involved in Moorabool’s Community Leadership Program was, obviously we’re taking up a community-focused role. I thought it would be useful to make formal contact with Council, and learn about how community engagement works, looking at it from a Council perspective.”

Mr Saunders said the program was a boost for both participants and Council itself, with huge potential benefits for the community.

“Anybody who’s got an idea, I think it’s well worth giving it a go. It’ll cost you time and effort of course, but if you carry it through until the end, two things come out of it – you get to meet a lot of people, learn a lot from Helen [program facilitator] and other attendees…and by giving new community leaders this big picture support, Council can extend its viability beyond what Council staff alone could do.” he said.

The Community Leadership Program is now taking applications for 2021, with applications open until 19 April.

The program will run from 5 May to 17 September.

Rates shock fear for farmers

By Lachlan Ellis The Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) has put out a call for rural and regional councils to “avoid inequitable rate increases for farmers” as the state marks record farmland sales.

VFF President Emma Germano said farmers had seen huge increases in their properties’ value over the last few years, leading to rates increases far higher than other property types.

“Record land values and the fact we have annual valuations means many farmers are going to be hit with unfair increases to their rates notices this year,” Ms Germano said.

“Ordinarily we expect farmland to double in value over a decade. However, we’ve been seeing land double in the value within the space of three years, and in some instances, values have doubled within twelve months.”

According to Ms Germano, the adjustment of rates across entire shires and cities, rather than according to value differences between different classes of property, has meant that “ultimately…the rating burden is increasingly being forced onto farmers”.

Fiskville sheep farmer Scott Young said he agrees with Ms Germano, and believes that more needs to be done to lessen the squeeze on farmers and rural shires as a whole.

“Every year there’s every chance of a rate shock, and it’s tough. When you’re a generational farmer and you have no

intention of selling and moving on, and you want to keep farming in your area, but rates keep going up…at some stage, it’s going to reach the point where it’s not viable,” Mr Young told the Moorabool News.

“We’ve been talking about it for years, there needs to be a restructure of the rating process. All our little country shires haven’t got enough money to function, we need to get a bit more money from the State Government.

“There’s an awful lot of roads and infrastructure in the country, and not a lot of ratepayers to pay for the work to be done. So, there’s an unfair burden on rural ratepayers, regardless of whether they’re farmers or not.”

When asked if Moorabool Shire Council was considering changes to alleviate sharp rate rises for farmers, CEO Derek Madden said Council was working through a draft budget but did not acknowledge whether farmers’ rates may be adjusted.

“Council is currently working through its draft 2021/22 Budget. The State Government, via the Valuer General of Victoria, is the sole authority responsible for conducting valuations of all properties as part of the municipal revaluation,” Mr Madden said.

“Property valuations are now conducted by the State Government on an annual basis. We are currently awaiting the release of valuation data from the Valuer General for the 2021/22 valuation cycle.”

Homeless offender unaware of suspension

By Lachlan Ellis A man caught driving while suspended was suffering a range of issues, including homelessness and poor mental health the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court heard on Friday 26 March.

James Melbourne appeared on livestream, but was represented by lawyer Melanie Rudolphus, who appeared in-person.

Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Steve Repac told Magistrate Tom Barrett that Mr Melbourne’s licence had been suspended due to “accruing of demerit points” when he was pulled over last year, and his car had been impounded.

Mr Melbourne entered a guilty plea, but Ms Rudolphus told the court he had endured difficult circumstances and was unaware of any wrongdoing, until he was informed by police.

“He was experiencing homelessness, and all his mail was being sent to his grandparents’ house. This offence occurred during the second lockdown in Victoria, and he was unable to attend his grandparents’ house,” Ms Rudolphus said.

“He genuinely did not know he was suspended during this time, but he realises the reasonable thing would have been to contact his grandparents.

“He is now re-licenced, and he has paid approximately $1425 for his car to be released.

He is also receiving cognitive therapy,” she said.

Ms Rudolphus asked that the court impose a financial penalty and refrain from a further licence suspension “given there has been no further offending”.

Magistrate Barrett agreed, imposing a fine of $500 without further action on Mr Melbourne’s licence.

I am glad I was able to provide Peter Robson with some light entertainment. However, Peter presumes to know more about me than he does.

At no point in any Letter to the Editor have I stated a preference either way for above or underground transmission lines. I have merely made a case for more truthfulness in the campaigning. I do not care which way the line goes, and have only asked that people stop the deception which has plagued this campaign from the outset. For example, there are still farms displaying signs which read “tell Dan to stick the lines where the Sun don’t shine”, and yet we have clearly established this is not a state issue.

Peter may also be interested to know that my family has a long history of farming, and I do understand different spraying and irrigation techniques. I have also provided a wide range of technical support for primary industries through my working life. Peter only thinks he knows all about me.

Likewise, the constant reference to fire danger from aboveground transmission lines, which is not supported by any data. There are no recorded instances of HV transmission lines causing fires, so why keep perpetrating this untruth. Similarly, the reference to “substantial easements’’ as a prohibition on normal farming activities, which is not the case, again the attempts to mislead. The same can be said of the claim that the towers will be 85m tall. The 500KV towers will be approx 72m tall. Could Peter please tell me who is lying now?

All I am asking for is that people stick to the facts not b------t. And maybe don’t shoot the messenger.

A man facing the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on charges of failure to answer bail and non-compliance with a good behaviour bond, has told the Magistrate he “forgot about it”.

Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Steve Repac told the court on 26 March that Jackson Lyle had entered a good behaviour bond with a financial condition in 2016, but had failed to pay up.

“On the 16th of September 2016, the accused entered an adjourned undertaking here at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court. The terms were good behaviour for 12 months, and to pay $500 to the court fund,” he said.

But those 12 months elapsed with the $500

still outstanding, and court staff promptly contacted police.

Mr Lyle apologised, but admitted he had no legitimate excuse against the charges.

“Sorry, I just didn’t pay the fine. I wasn’t aware, either I forgot about it, or I didn’t have the money at the time,” he said.

“I am happy to pay the fine now, I can pay half of it today and the other half next week.”

Magistrate Tom Barrett gave Mr Lyle a month to pay in full, but more than doubled the total amount for his oversight.

“Because there’s been a breach, I’ll have to impose another fine of $300. I’ll give you a month to pay that and order you to pay a further fine of $300, for failure to respond to bail,” Magistrate Barrett said.

PROPOSED FEDERAL ELECTORAL DIVISIONS RELEASED FOR VICTORIA The Redistribution Committee for Victoria has released proposed federal electoral divisions for Victoria.

PROPOSED FEDERAL ELECTORAL DIVISIONS Victoria’s entitlement has increased from 38 to 39 members of the House of Representatives.

The Redistribution Committee proposes altering the boundaries of the Divisions of Ballarat, Gorton and McEwen such that: • the entirety of the localities of Bacchus Marsh, Balliang East, Ballan, Barrys Reef, Beremboke, Blackwood, Blakeville, Brookfield, Bulla, Cobblebank, Colbrook, Comadai, Dales Creek, Darley, Diggers Rest, Exford, Fiskville, Glenmore, Greendale, Harkness, Hopetoun Park, Ingliston, Korobeit, Kurunjang, Lerderderg, Long Forest, Maddingley, Melton, Melton South, Melton West, Merrimu, Mount Wallace, Parwan, Pentland Hills, Plumpton, Rowsley, Strathtulloh, Sunbury, Weir Views, Wildwood, as well as part of the localities of Balliang, Clarkefield, Eynesbury, Hillside, Mount Cottrell, Oaklands Junction and Toolern Vale, will be located in the proposed Division of Hawke, and • the entirety of the localities of Calder Park, Delahey, Keilor Downs, Keilor Lodge, Keilor North, Kings Park, Sydenham and part of the locality of Keilor, will be located in the proposed Division of Gorton.

These proposed alterations share the Moorabool Shire Council between the proposed Divisions of Ballarat and Hawke, the Melton City Council between the proposed Divisions of Gorton and Hawke, and the Hume City Council between the proposed Divisions of Calwell, Hawke, McEwen and Maribyrnong.

Hawke A new Division of Hawke, named in honour of the former Prime Minister, the Hon. Robert James Lee Hawke AC (1929–2019), is proposed to include electors from the local government areas of Hume City Council, Melton City Council and Moorabool Shire Council.

The Redistribution Committee proposes retaining the names of 37 of Victoria’s existing electoral divisions and changing the name of one division.

Tucker The Redistribution Committee proposes changing the Division of Corangamite to Tucker in honour of Margaret (Lilardia) Elizabeth Tucker MBE (1904–1996), a Yorta Yorta woman, for her significant work to create a more equal and understanding society for Aboriginal people.

The Redistribution Committee also proposes changing the boundaries of 29 of Victoria’s 38 existing electoral divisions.

This report contains detailed information regarding the proposed electoral divisions, including reasons for the proposal, and the Redistribution Committee’s consideration of all suggestions and comments on suggestions.

The report and maps can also be inspected at the office of the Australian Electoral Officer for Victoria at Level 1, Urban Workshop, 50 Lonsdale Street, Melbourne, or at any AEC office in Victoria. The location of AEC offices is available on the AEC website or by phoning 13 23 26.

NEXT STEPS After considering the objections and comments on objections received, the augmented Electoral Commission may, if necessary, hold public hearings and/or make a revised proposal. In this case, the augmented Electoral Commission will consider any further objections before making a final determination of divisional boundaries and names in a notice published in the Commonwealth Government Notices Gazette on Monday 26 July 2021.

Farm safety – make the switch

By Caitlin Bewley A local farmer said the use of quad bikes on his farm is “practically non-existent” due to the danger they pose to riders.

According to statistics released by AgriFutures Australia, quad bikes and tractors continue as the leading cause of death and injury on Australian Farms.

Figures collated by AgHealth Australia’s National Farm Injury Coronial Database revealed 58 on-farm deaths were reported in 2020, which is the same number of cases as 2019.

Fiskville farmer and VFF Livestock Vice President for the Moorabool area, Scott Young, said it’s often people doing things they know they shouldn’t be doing whilst operating heavy machinery who end up injured.

“On my property I have made quad bikes practically nonexistent and have started using side by sides because of the added protection with seat belts and the fact that they’re less likely to roll over,” he said.

“Side by sides are safer, in my opinion, and although people argue that they’re less agile, I’ve had no issues with chasing and herding sheep.”

Mr Young said there is training available for farmers wanting to use heavy machinery, and that it would be a good idea to participate in that training if you’re a farming beginner.

When asked what his golden piece of advice would be to ensure safety whilst operating machinery on farms, he said “caution is the key”.

“Operate them within their recommended limits, and if you’re inexperienced and new to the industry, take the time to complete training courses and basic training in equipment,” he said.

And Mr Young had a further message to not operate the machines inappropriately and always be cautious when using heavy machinery.

“Other non-agricultural industries have accepted that

‘inherently dangerous’ is not a condition of work but a call to action.

“Actions that target known and persistent risk, using risk controls proven to reduce the potential for death and serious injury need to be enforced if we are going to see any noticeable change in these statistics,” Mr Barrett said.

Ghosts of the gold rush past

By Lachlan Ellis There is a new book on the shelves, and it gives readers a unique insight into 21-Victorian towns that sprang up during the Gold Rush era, from those that still remain on a smaller scale, to those that have completely vanished.

Written by John and Marie Watt, ‘The Ghosts Have Never Left – Victorian Gold Rush Towns and the Stories They Could Tell’ features more than 250 pages of history and infrared photography.

Some more remote and perhaps unfamiliar towns such as Mafeking, Rheola and Whroo are mentioned, as well as one more familiar to Moorabool – Lal Lal. In the Buninyong chapter, the Watts discuss Lal Lal’s history as an iron mining town and draw an intriguing link to Buninyong and the Eureka Rebellion.

“There is strong evidence that the first protest meeting against a gold licence fee took place at Buninyong on 25 August 1851, shortly after the discovery of gold there by Thomas Hiscock,” Ms Watt told the Moorabool News.

Photographs of the Lal Lal Blast Furnace – the only one from the 19th century left in the Southern Hemisphere, and the only attempt to smelt iron ore in Victoria – as well as the Bluestone Railway Station, are included in the chapter.

“Whilst exploring, photographing, and researching these towns over the course of several years, we came to realise that each and every one was connected in some way with an important but often obscure or little-known slice of Victorian history,” Ms Watt said.

“21 of these stories are briefly recounted, emphasising the fact that whilst gold drove the creation and growth of the towns, they have all been part of a much richer story.”

The book also refers to specific locations, visitor centres, websites and walking guides for those who wish to explore the historical sites for themselves.

The Ghosts Have Never Left received great reviews from two former Victorian Premiers, Ted Baillieu and Steve Bracks.

By Caitlin Bewley A local company has received funding to teach potato famers about sustainable growing using contemporary technology.

The Australian government is investing $6.48 million nationally into activities that increase farm productivity and boost natural resource management and $97,000 of that going to Mollongghip and District Enterprises (MADE) to support the next generation Potato Farming program.

Mollongghip is nestled west of the Wombat State Forest, north of Springbank, in the Moorabool Shire.

Co-founder Bryce Ott said MADE’s origin began after four local people’s desire to help farmers be sustainable and thrive was identified.

“MADE’s primary focus is using anaerobic digestion technology to implement a circular economy system that takes agricultural by-products and converts them to useful inputs that go back into the farming system. “[We’re looking at] renewable Natural Gas to replace diesel and a highquality fertiliser to replace the synthetic fertilisers that dominate the industry currently,” he said.

Mr Ott said the Government funding is a brilliant fit for MADE’s mission and goals and that it is a fantastic opportunity to continue to build what they offer to the farming community.

“Our project helps local potato farmers build knowledge and skills in precision agriculture technologies to improve their soil, water and plant knowledge.

“We aim to use sustainable methods to help potato farmers increase yields, improve soil health and reduce input costs to ensure we have a thriving community for the future,” he said.

“Our work will help farmers optimise the health and productivity of their soil, the most valuable resource they have.”

MADE Energy is looking at a paradigm shift in how fertiliser is produced by focusing on low-temperature, low-pressure production of biohydrogen, considered by many to be the holy grail of innovation in the sustainable energy sector.

The team at MADE are currently undertaking a feasibility study in partnership with Griffith University and Frontier Impact Group which is being funded by the Business Research and Innovation Initiative (BRII).

Get your Property ID Code (PIC) now

By Dr Jeff Cave District Veterinary Officer The purpose of property identification is partly for tracing and controlling disease and residue problems that may be detected after leaving the farm.

However, it is also for identifying properties and owners that have livestock when an outbreak of a disease that may threaten their animals or enterprise is detected in an area.

Traceability systems provide confidence to consumers in domestic and overseas markets that the products they buy are of good quality.

Naturally, Agriculture Victoria’s property identification code (PIC) database is only as good as the information that is provided.

It is important to update your PIC information with Agriculture Victoria within 28 days when changes occur, this can all be done online.

A PIC is an eight-character code allocated by Agriculture Victoria, to a property used for agricultural purposes, and is free of cost.

Victorian PICs begin with the numeral 3, followed by four letters and three more numerals, eg 3ABCD123. The first two letters identify the municipality of the property.

It is a legal requirement to have a PIC for properties that graze the following livestock:

• cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, alpaca, llamas, deer, horses • more than 50 poultry (i.e. domesticated fowl, chickens, ducks, geese, turkey, guinea fowl, pigeons, quail or pheasants) or 10 emus or ostriches • all livestock businesses (saleyards, cattle scales, abattoirs, knackeries and stock agents) • horse owners running horses on their own property and owners of properties where horses are agisted.

A single PIC can be allocated to a property consisting of more than one block of land, provided the blocks are part of the one enterprise and are within the same municipality or in adjacent municipalities.

Similarly, land on which livestock are agisted and leased can be covered by the ‘home’ PIC. To apply for your free PIC you have three options: 1. apply for a PIC online via Agriculture Victoria’s Online PIC service 2. use the online service to update your existing PIC details if they have changed 3. contact the PIC Helpline on 1800 678 779 to have a form mailed or faxed to you.

Frankie didn’t go Top job changes hands to Hollywood

A silly sausage by the name of Frankie, got more than he bargained for when exploring near the Werribee River last month, but thankfully Council came to the rescue.

Frankie the sausage dog got stuck 20 metres into a rabbit hole on the afternoon of Thursday 18 March, but Council’s works team was soon on the scene.

After two hours of digging with shovels and even a backhoe, the works team were able to free Frankie and return him to his grateful owners.

Trained to protect agriculture Agriculture Victoria continues to improve its capability to respond to biosecurity and animal welfare threats, with 22 new Authorised Officers and Inspectors trained.

The new Authorised Officers and Inspectors cover a wide range of issues including animal biosecurity and animal welfare, plant biosecurity, weeds and pest animals, and agricultural and veterinary chemical use.

Of the 22 staff, nine are based in southwest Victoria, five in northern Victoria, six in south-east Victoria, and two staff in statewide roles.

Biosecurity Operations Acting Program Manager Rachel Cairns said the new Authorised Officers and Inspectors were an important addition to Agriculture Victoria’s resources to address issues day to day as well as in emergencies.

“The training has been a comprehensive program to prepare staff for their roles where they work with industry and community to improve biosecurity and animal welfare outcomes,” Ms Cairns said.

“Responsibilities of Authorised Officers and Inspectors include working with livestock owners and landholders to manage weeds and pest animals, tag livestock, and inspect saleyards.

“They also monitor for pests and diseases, issue certifications for produce, investigate agricultural and veterinary chemical use and alleged animal cruelty, as well as issue fines for non-compliance with laws that protect Victoria’s domestic and export markets.

“The program introduces staff to the work of Agriculture Victoria, Victoria’s biosecurity and agriculture-related legislation, their duties and powers as Authorised Officers and Inspectors, safety, as well as other important aspects of operating in the Victorian Public Service, including human rights and integrity.”

The Authorised Officer training program is usually completed in-person, however due to restrictions in 2020, all training needed to be completed online, which was a first for the program.

The Agriculture Victoria Authorised Officer training program is supported by the Victorian Government’s $142.5 million investment to strengthen Victoria’s biosecurity system.

The program also aligns with the recently released Agriculture Strategy, through protecting and enhancing the future of agriculture by ensuring it is well-placed to respond to climate change, pests, weeds, diseases and increased resource scarcity.

CFA District 15 has appointed a new Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) with almost four decades of firefighting experience under his belt.

Eddie Lacko joined the CFA in 1983, and said he is eager to work with the volunteers throughout the district.

“I’m really quite humbled,” he said.

“From a leadership perspective, I’m keen to really get my teeth into it and support our volunteers and our staff, to ensure we have the best service delivery we possibly can.”

When Mr Lacko joined the CFA as a volunteer at Cranbourne, he was just 16 years old, and the horrific Ash Wednesday (1983) bushfires were blazing.

In recent times, he has been working out of Horsham in District 17 as a CFA Commander, and has also spent years serving as a firefighter in Queensland.

Now back in Victoria, Mr Lacko drew similarities to leadership roles he held at QFES.

“I truly see this as a fantastic opportunity to work with our volunteers and grab CFA by the horns to move it forward,” he said.

“I see my leadership as about influence not authority, and my vision is to bring my best for our people within District 15, as well as working closely with our local Fire Rescue Victoria colleagues.”

ACFO Lacko acknowledged the work done in the past by Brett Boatmen (outgoing), who is moving to the Structural Planning division at CFA Headquarters in another ACFO role.

“I’ve got big shoes to fill. He’s done a great job with District 15 and I’m hoping to enhance on what he’s already done.”

District 15 covers a large chunk of Moorabool Shire, including the brigades in Gordon, Ballan, Bacchus Marsh, Millbrook, Mt Egerton, Parwan, Balliang East, Bungaree, Coimadai, Greendale, Myrniong, Blackwood, Rowsley, Mt Wallace, Morrisons, Elaine and Wallace.

Donations all above board

When you think political donations, you might think of the millions of dollars donated to federal political parties – but Council candidates take donations too, in Moorabool to the tune of $1,400 in 2020.

The Australian Electoral Commission released the campaign donation returns for 2019 – 2020 in February, with two candidates in the 2020 Moorabool Shire Council elections declaring disclosable gifts.

Lodging a donation return is required for all candidates in a Victorian local election, even those who do not receive any donations.

All gifts “from 30 days after the previous election for the relevant Ward or District until 30 days after the current election” worth $500 or more are defined as donations that must legally be disclosed.

Central Ward candidate Benjamin Davison and East Ward candidate Nicola Lane declared disclosable gifts. Mr Davison declared $1,000 from John Armitage, while Ms Lane declared $200 from Gayle Harrison, $50 from David Laffy, $50 from Sandra Woodard and $100 from Natalie Goode.

The other 18 candidates, including all seven elected Councillors, declared “Nil” disclosable gifts.

Disclosable gifts include, but are not limited to, cash donations, contributions and fundraising functions, free or discounted services, and paid time off work to campaign.

By Lachlan Ellis A man who stole a vacuum cleaner from Bunnings in Melton told police after he was arrested, that it was a “silly mistake”.

Scott Barber was represented via livestream by lawyer Allan McMonnies, facing the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on 26 March.

Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Steve Repac told Magistrate Tom Barrett the accused had been caught red-handed by CCTV. “On the 14th of December 2020 at around 1:30 pm, the accused attended Bunnings in Melton. He took a vacuum cleaner valued at $249 to his car, and was observed placing it inside his car, removing it from the box and placing it behind the passenger seat,” Mr Repac said.

“He was stopped and asked to produce the receipt by police but was unable to provide a receipt. He was then taken to Melton Police Station, and stated his reason was ‘Not thinking straight I suppose, I needed a vacuum cleaner at home’.”

Mr McMonnies said while his client’s current job was not at stake over the offence, his future job opportunities may be affected.

“It’s a dishonesty offence on this occasion. I can’t see entirely it’s a matter where it’s going to affect his job…he hasn’t told his employer, he’s not going to lose his job. But as a 35-yearold man it could affect his future, and I think he could contribute something to the community via donation.” Mr McMonnies said.

The Magistrate agreed, putting Mr Barber on a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordering him to make a $500 contribution to the court fund.

A collision in Rockbank between a contracted Moorabool Council branded rubbish truck, and a sedan last Monday (29 March) ground traffic and public transport to a halt, thankfully with no injuries.

Police believe the white waste truck collided with a white Hyundai sedan on Hopkins Road at around 11.30 am, pushing it onto nearby train tracks.

The 23-year-old driver of the sedan, a woman from Rockbank, was uninjured and was able to leave the vehicle. Police and emergency services attended the scene, and the woman was taken to hospital by ambulance for observation.

The sedan remained on the tracks and was clipped by a V/Line train a few minutes later, with the train’s driver and passengers all uninjured.

Buses replaced trains on the Ballarat line while investigations were underway, and Hopkins Road was closed in both direction

between the Western Freeway and Greigs Road, while the Department of Transport carried out repair works.

The 42-year-old truck driver, an employee of contractor Coy Waste, allegedly tested positive to drugs and is assisting police with their enquiries.

When asked if daily drug and alcohol testing were a requirement for drivers contracted

by Council, a spokesperson said it was “a matter for the contractor and forms part of its management plan”.

Hopkins Road and Ballarat rail line services re-opened later in the day, with the Department of Transport issuing a Transport Alert declaring Hopkins Road re-opened at 2.25 pm.

Little Athletics Victoria Relay Championships This year’s Championships at Casey Fields, Cranbourne were conducted under a new format due to restrictions, with Under 9-12 athletes competing on the Saturday and the Under 13-16 teams on Sunday.

Only 4x100m races were held and run as timed finals.

Bacchus Marsh had 20 teams representing the Centre.

The Girls Under 15 finished 3rd in their heat and 8th overall, producing a consistent four legs of relay racing.

All teams showed great determination in their races and should be extremely proud of their performances.

Premiership playing coach Heath Scotland (Sunshine), Brian Graham (Sunshine), Nick Graham (North Footscray) headline EIGHT absentees from 2019, raising doubts over the club extending on its proud run of finals appearances (since 2012 including two flags 2015, 2017).

Enter new playing coach Dan Roy (Lorne) who will lead the mission.

“I’m rapt with how things are going,” he said.

“We’ve built a lot already on our base fitness levels, some blokes are working the house down and numbers on the track have been 30 plus most nights which is really pleasing.”

While the 33-year-old conceded the loss of Scotland and the Graham brothers will hurt, Roy is confident the hole left can be filled by ready-made Darley players prepared to take the next step.

“If we can improve 10 per cent across the board, there’s no reason why we couldn’t go deep again,” he said.

“Luther Baker (equal 10th Henderson Medal 2019), Leigh Spiteri and Jake Ancrum are more than capable.

“They’ve two flags under their belts and should want to be dominating.”

Despite a quiet rescue effort in the marketplace throughout a difficult 2020, the Devils best 22 over recent weeks is beginning to take shape. Key defender *Matthew Brett (Werribee), mobile forward *Ryan Kemp (Werribee), inside mid Stephen Doran (Point Cook) and Mitch Banner (VAFA) join dynamic small forward and Vic Metro repre-

sentative Ben Said (St Albans) as the ‘new faces’ at Darley Park.

Just how often Brett and Kemp are seen in Devils colours however, is another question given their VFL affiliations.

There was more good news on the coaching front at Darley with the signing of popular local figure and former AFL Champion Doug Hawkins who will lead the Under 19s. Dean Chambers (Western Jets, ex Werribee) too, will be an added bonus for the club following his Senior Assistant Coach appointment.

Additions aside, coach Roy will be holding the younger players accountable this year given the club has blooded up to ten U/19 players over the past two seasons under Scotland.

“We’re confident some of these boys are ready to impact games,” he said.

“They should have the belief in themselves to start taking games on.”

To make finals this year, Darley will rely heavily on maintaining its impeccable record at home over the past two seasons with 16 wins and just two losses.

“Our destiny is in our own hands,” Roy said.

“If we can improve our consistency on the road as well, it gives us every chance (of playing finals).”

Got it in one.

North Ballarat – MACARTNEY IMPRESSED WITH ROOSTERS

2021 Coach: Brendan Macartney 2019: Finished 7th (H&A) P16 W7 L9 2019 BFNL rankings: Attack 8th, Defence 7th Whelan’s 2021 prediction: 4th - 8th EXPECT a healthy North Ballarat list to give itself every chance of returning to the September finals action that eluded them in 2019. But it won’t be easy. Eleven doesn’t go into six unfortunately as each club makes their finals intentions clear.

New Coach and marquee signing Brendan Macartney, however, is pretty relaxed ahead of Round one.

“We’re in a good space at the moment, numbers on the track have been encouraging,” he said.

“I’m hoping we’re in much better shape (than 2019).”

Ball magnets Daniel Jones (knee), 2019 Club Best and Fairest winner Simon McCartin (osteitis pubis), Tim Spiers (knee) and big man Cam Mcullum (knee) are all on track for a 2021 return.

Add the 2020 pre covid signings of Sam Glover (Collingwood VFL), Thomas Hotchin (North Melbourne VFL) into the mix for a 2021 tilt with midfield acquisitions Jonathon O’Brien (Springbank - 190cm) and 25-year old Joey Symonds (North Ballarat VFL) who returns to the game after a three year layoff. Glover is a bona fide gun (key position) but is unlikely to feature regularly in North colours given his recent VFL form with the Pies. Hotchin faces a similar scenario, leaving O’Brien the seasoned campaigner to join the midfield group on a weekly basis.

But who knows what is going to happen with the revamped VFL competition? North Ballarat could well be the beneficiaries of any potential fall-out, raising their finals claims in the process.

Mitch Johns also returns to the club, Josh McDermott (Beaufort/Lake Wendouree) will add to the ruck stocks, while 14 players who are no longer eligible for the Under 19s, aim to make the grade.

This is where you would expect Macartney to

thrive - converting young talent into senior roles given his reputation and experience in the AFL over many years.

According to Macartney the young blokes have been terrific.

“Their commitment this far out has been brilliant,” he said.

“But boys against men (the prospect of senior footy), we won’t know how far each have come.

“Three practice matches against quality GFL sides leading in will be give us a fair indication.”

The Roosters lose key forward Will Young (Caroline Springs), small inside mid Mitch Gilbert (Skipton), Interleague representative defender Ben Simpson (Geelong way), under rated Sam Willian (Skipton) and James Sclanders (Skipton).

Young especially is a huge loss for the club, but three years travelling from Melbourne had finally taken its toll.

Can North Ballarat hit the scoreboard enough in 2021 to warrant a return to finals? They’ll be coming from a fair way back given natural improvement across the competition. Young has been their leading goal scorer over the past three seasons with his lowest return (24 goals) coming in 2019. The 26-year old ball magnet boasts an award winning VFL career with North Ballarat and more recently North Melbourne.

Remarkably, Rippon appeared in the best players in 47 of his 75 VFL games dating back to 2014.

Lakers Coach Dale Power who enters his fourth season in charge, was stoked with the club’s marquee signing.

“Nick’s a former Ballarat junior, he’s a great get for us,” he said.

“For a player as decorated as him to join the club is pretty significant.”

Rippon 176cm, who won the inaugural John Laws Medal in 2018 in North Melbourne’s first stand-alone year in the VFL competition, will play the entire 2021 season with the Lakers having passed on a likely VFL return due to its uncertainty at present.

The Lakers midfield led by Rippon and 2019 Club Best and Fairest Jake Coxall will be eyeing first use out of the middle.

Newcomers Lachlan Pfeifer (Beaufort - inside mid), Angus Gove (St Michaels - mid/forward), Tom LeLievre (Beaufort - forward/mid), Zane Thompson (QLD, ex Beaufort - small forward) and Timothy Collins (Dunnstown - forwardmid) are hopeful of making an impression on the hole left by outgoing talent Bailey Edwards (Maryborough -work) and former Henderson Medalist and Multiple Club Best and Fairest Ben Taylor (Yarraville - travel).

“They’re huge shoes to fill,” Power said.

“It’s unfortunate but we understand their reasons for leaving.

“Ben has travelled for 10-years and has had

enough while Bailey has work commitments,” he said. While Taylor’s reliability and footy smarts will be sorely missed, it’s Bailey’s speed and line breaking you can’t replace according to Power.

“He’s a 70-metre player,” he said.

Werribee VFL listed player Scott Carlin (Warrnambool DFNL) and Kyran Raven (CHFL) have also left the club.

Brayden Helyar (Horsham, Geelong VFL) returns to Ballarat for University and joins the Lakers after being delisted at Geelong. The 21year old has pace to burn with his 6’2” frame, opening the door for Power to explore his options. “He (Helyar) could easily play on a wing,” Power said.

The club was also thrilled to announce that former Western Bulldog *Fergus Greene (now Box Hill) has chosen the Lakers as his feeder club for the coming season. The 23-year-old, who played five AFL games in 2018 with the Doggies still has aspirations to play at the highest level. Coach Power told members on the clubs Facebook page that having a player of Fergus’ ability join the ranks doesn’t happen very often and, he can’t wait to see him in Lakers colours. Given the 187cm talent is hopeful of luring the attention of AFL clubs with Box Hill in the VFL, any sighting of Greene would be a massive bonus.

Meanwhile, the Lakers focus for the impending 2021 season will turn to hitting the scoreboard, after disappointing returns in 2019. Only Ben Smyth (Darwin) from 2019s mud bath First Semi Final loss to Sebastopol has left the Lions, giving coach Jarrett Giampaolo every reason to ‘think big’.

“A Premiership is a pass mark for us this year, why not?” he said.

“It’s been 11-years since we won our last one,” “Throw in a few Preliminary Final losses along the way and we’ve had enough,” he said.

“We’re ready to go.”

Reigning Best and Fairest Lachie George looks set to partner up with veteran ruckman Orron Stephenson once again, hoping to emulate the clubs stunning 7-0 run to start 2019. Experienced campaigners Liam Hoy, Grant Bell and young gun *Lachlan McLean are sure to have found the necessary belief and fire in the belly to lead this current group deeper in September.

“We know we have the talent,” Giampaolo said.

“So, the focus for us this year is all about development as 2019 was a bit of an unknown for us.”

Despite the lingering confidence in the current list, Giampaolo is hopeful they can bolster their stocks further ahead of Round one.

“We’re still in the market for a relief ruckman for Orron (Stephenson) and a tall key position (swing) that can go forward or back,” he said.

In the meantime, the club has signed Colby McDonald (Tatura - defender) and is hopeful popular duo Tom Lamb and Chris Giampaolo can play a role after a stint away.

VFL listed youngsters *Cooper Atchison, *Cooper Craig-Peters and newcomer *Izaac Grant (Hepburn, Rebels - med forward/mid) will complement the age profile of the group perfectly, and with that, the fitness edge that comes from the VFL program.

The Lions draw reads similarly favourable to 2019, but Giampaolo wasn’t phased either way.

“I haven’t looked that much into it to be honest.

“We beat everyone in 2019, that I do remember,” he said.

The Lions will be hopeful of starting one step ahead of the competition as they did in 2019 (7-0), given they managed just three wins from the last nine home and away games.

Fingers crossed for Redan fans if they haven’t been worked out already.

Bob was a very entrepreneurial man and was always looking for opportunities. One day someone came into his shop and asked if he knew anyone selling a farm in the area. Bob put the feelers out and soon found a suitable Vendor and the sale was made.
