Keeping an eagle eye on Hawke

A new federal electorate map for Victoria proposed by the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) would put much of Moorabool in the new ‘Division of Hawke’ – raising concerns those towns within could be overlooked.

The electorate, named after the late former Prime Minister Bob Hawke, would include Ballan, Bacchus Marsh, Myrniong, Greendale and Balliang (currently part of the Division of Ballarat), alongside Sunbury (Division of McEwen) and Melton (Division of Gorton).

Gordon, Mount Egerton, Lal Lal and Bungaree would remain part of the Division of Ballarat.

The Local Government Areas (LGAs) to which Sunbury and Melton belong, dwarf Moorabool’s population – the City of Hume, which contains Sunbury, has a population of more than 224,000, while the City of Melton has a population of over 156,000.

Moorabool Shire contains around 35,000 people. Sunbury alone exceeds that population, at around 40,000 residents.

Moorabool Council CEO Derek Madden said they have forwarded their concerns to the AEC, regarding these larger areas being included in the same electorate as smaller Moorabool towns.

“Council put in a submission to the proposed changes and will work with existing and new representatives to ensure Moorabool Shire does not get forgotten, next to its better-resourced neighbouring local government areas,” he told the Moorabool News.

“We will continue to advocate to both levels of government for the best infrastructure, social and economic outcomes for our community.”

Mayor Tom Sullivan said he was concerned not only that Mooraboolites in the Division of Hawke could be neglected, but that Moorabool Shire would be split politically.

“The main concern I have is that if there’s a significant split in the municipality, and we could have communities that are split which could disadvantage the Shire, especially if one electorate is quite marginal and the other wasn’t,” he said.

Cr Sullivan said it’s also a concern that the two towns [Melton and Sunbury] have a significantly higher population than Moorabool.

“Sometimes we may get sidelined by that. What might be a priority across the electorate may not be one that aligns with our best interests,” he said.

“That’s the challenge for us going forward, to be able to make sure our local

representative, whoever that may be, considers the smaller towns. We should all get our fair share. We certainly don’t want to get swamped by larger towns.”

The AEC will be accepting written objections until 6 pm on Friday 16 April, via email at FedRedistribution-VIC@aec.gov.au.

Gas set to ignite Parwan

By Lachlan Ellis Tapping into an existing gas pipeline with benefit the Parwan area after an injection of funds by the State Government.

The $2.7 million investment at the ‘Parwan City Gate Gas Connection Project’ more than doubles project commitments of $1 million from Moorabool Shire Council, and over $770,000 alongside donated land from local meat producers L&G Meats.

Last Monday (22 March) saw a politician parade with Minister for Regional Development Mary-Anne Thomas joining Member for Buninyong Michaela Settle, Member for Melton Steve McGhie, and Moorabool Shire Mayor Tom Sullivan at the Parwan site, to see early works on the project.

Cr Sullivan said the announcement was exciting after years of planning.

“This is a project that Council has been working on and trying to get to fruition for at least five or six years,” he told the Moorabool News.

“This will allow for a significant piece of infrastructure to be put in place, which will allow the provision of reticulated gas for the Parwan Employment Precinct, but also for future residential development in the Parwan area to the north.

“For the Parwan Employment Precinct, the expectations

are within six years there will be 1500 new jobs created in that area, which is a significant boost to the local economy of Bacchus Marsh and Moorabool Shire. That’s based on the projections, that could increase,” he said.

The provision of jobs was just one benefit of the project – another was reduced travel for work, and more spending in the local economy.

“One benefit from Council’s perspective is that people can work in the area where they live. They can live in Moorabool and work in Moorabool, as opposed to travelling out of the municipality each day for employment,” Cr Sullivan said.

“Another is that more money stays in the local economy, which I think cannot be underestimated. The flow-on and multiplier effect of that is significant.”

Minister Thomas told those attending the announcement that the project would be ground-breaking for the Bacchus Marsh area.

“Enabling infrastructure is the term of our times, we’re all talking about it…it’s the work that’s so important to make things happen. Gas, electricity, sewerage,” Ms Thomas said.

“Excitingly, L&G Meats who of course have an abattoir here in town, intend to build a protein processing facility here, which will employ in the first instance 10 people. But what

we understand is that the plans for this precinct are that it will be home to up to 1500 workers.

“That’s so important for this beautiful and growing community,” the Minister concluded.

Around 2880 hectares of land, from Parwan South Road to Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road, will be used for the project – more than 1400 times the size of the MCG. The completed pipeline is expected to double gas capacity to the Bacchus Marsh area and is scheduled to be completed by mid-2022.

The ‘bear’ essentials

A good excuse for a teddy bear picnic would be a birthday, a 30th celebration in fact.

Since 1990, Australian Red Cross has been distributing Trauma Teddies to children experiencing illness or trauma. There have been over 1-million trauma teddies given to children, but who makes them?

Marilyn Baker is a member of the Ballan Red Cross Unit, a keen knitter of trauma teddies since she moved to Ballan in 2007, and during the COVID lock down period produced 150 teddies.

“It was over a few months that I did them, I can’t just sit and watch television, I have to knit or do puzzles during the ads,” Ms Baker told the Moorabool News.

“One teddy takes about an hour to knit, and then about three quarters of an hour to fill it.

I make the small ones now, not the big ones… the children seem to like the smaller ones more.

Ms Baker said the teddy consoles children that are upset.

“I know they like to cuddle them and feel better if they have them. It’s not a problem…it’s nice to be able to help someone.”

The Red Cross Trauma Teddy Program has found the teddies have a calming effect and give great comfort to children.

In Victoria alone last year 30,000 were distributed from hospitals, police, ambulances and doctor’s rooms, also in times of natural disasters. All teddies are safely created and receive the Red Cross label as proof of quality.

Health is wealth

By Caitlin Bewley Community consultation sessions into the future of Moorabool’s health and wellbeing, has provided Council with valuable information to progress.

In February and March this year, Council asked the community to identify their key health concerns to build a Health and Wellbeing plan.

Surveys, quick question postcards, stakeholder sessions and workshops assisted in gathering feedback which will be used to form the four-year plan.

Moorabool Shire CEO Derek Madden said Council are “currently looking at the data as [they] progress into the next stage of workshops with [the] Health and Wellbeing Committee and other stakeholders.”

Mr Madden said 2020/21 has been challenging and has impacted people’s health and wellbeing.

“Health issues including family violence, food insecurity, and mental health are emerging more strongly in the data we are seeing in Victoria and locally.

“While Council has the ability to support a number of actions, it is through a broader community focus and working with other organisations through the Plan that we are able to achieve a greater impact,” he said.

Council will be identifying health outcomes the community can work towards, opportunities to strengthen existing activities and actions, gaps, and opportunities, and ways to work together to improve health and wellbeing in the community.

Six key areas will be the focus of the Plan: • healthy eating and active living, • mental health and resilience, • alcohol and other drugs, • sexual and reproductive health, • education and employment and,

Dragging into motorsport history He is a newly crowned champion in his sport, and a local Marshian, despite only living in Moorabool for the last five-years.

Originally from Tasmania, drag racer Shane Walker moved his life and racing to Victoria in 2014, to compete regularly at National Championship events, something he said he “couldn’t do affordably from Tassie”. After meeting his now wife Monika in late 2015, he settled in Bacchus Marsh in early 2016.

Shane had chased a national title for 24 years, travelling all over the country with his wife in recent years, from Darwin and Alice Springs to Mildura and Perth.

In what Mr Walker calls their “second date”, he taught her how to tow his race bike around the back streets of Epping, “in preparedness for our third date, a race meeting at Calder Park”.

Work and family commitments, and the high cost of travelling to Perth races, meant Mr Walker, now in his late 50s, began to think he would never win a national title.

The COVID-19 pandemic made things difficult too, writing off Victorian events in 2020 and preventing Victorian racers from attending events in WA and Queensland.

But the perseverance finally paid off.

With the easing of COVID restrictions, the governing body ANDRA (Australian National Drag Racing Association) extended the racing season into 2021, with the aim of completing the series with a round each in Portland, Perth, Mildura, and the Grand Finals at a venue to be announced.

An early win at the Portland final, despite feeling rusty, left Walker feeling optimistic.

But COVID restrictions struck before the Perth round, with Victorians and South Australians required to quarantine for 14 days before attending. No racers from the

eastern states attended, leaving the WA locals to battle for the points.

Mildura was planned to be the penultimate round of the championship, but a few days before entries closed, ANDRA announced it would double as the Grand Final.

Walker faced a steep uphill task if he was going to pull back the 50 points he needed – requiring 3 round wins in a 4-round event.

He also needed to stay ahead of SA’s Brian Finn, who he was on equal points with.

“I needed plenty of luck … these guys are great racers, and they don’t make mistakes often, and rarely twice in a row,” Mr Walker admitted.

He headed off at 4 am on Friday 12 March, to make qualifying that evening, qualifying

the finish line when the win light lit up, prompting an excited fist pump into the air.

After 24 years, Shane Walker had finally accomplished his dream, being crowned ANDRA’s Modified Bike Champion for 2021.

Mr Walker was humble in victory.

“I had a good event at Portland so that was alright, but you can never be confident against these guys. None of them are slouches and you just don’t know what will happen,” he said.

“You just don’t know, so you can’t be too confident. We are all good riders and there is nothing between us – a lot of the time it is whoever buggers up the least or has the most luck – there is a fair bit of that involved.”

Walker’s luck continued, with his opponent faltering in the first round and breaking out (going too quick under the event’s handicap system).

In a pair of upsets, Dohnt and Addison were knocked out in the semi-finals, leaving twotime Australian champion Brian Finn, and first-time championship contender Shane Walker, racing for the title.

Job guarantee sought A Minister should be checking his letterbox this week, with a letter on the way from Moorabool Mayor Tom Sullivan.

Council announced the Mayor has written to Health Minister Martin Foley seeking an assurance that there will be no net local job losses, should he agree to a merger between Djerriwarrh Health Services and Western Health.

In a joint statement, the health services supported a voluntary merger and said there will be no reductions in “overall” health staffing numbers. It is understood that a final decision on the matter will be made by the Minister.

“Firstly, it is terrific news that both services see a future for the hospital in Bacchus Marsh and Grant Lodge residential aged care,” Cr Sullivan said.

“But while both services say there will be no overall job reductions, Council is concerned that this may apply to the western region as a whole, rather than to Bacchus Marsh. It is possible that jobs in Bacchus Marsh could be relocated to Footscray, for example, without any overall staff reductions.

Cr Sullivan confirmed he had written to the Minister for Health seeking an assurance that there will be no net job losses in Bacchus Marsh if this merger is approved.

“Unfortunately, Bacchus Marsh already feels under threat from recent government actions including a decision to build high voltage transmission lines through our picturesque landscape and plans to truck West Gate Tunnel Project spoil to the outskirts of the town. Any job losses from this proposed merger will cause further community angst, damage local confidence and inhibit economic prosperity.”

Cr Sullivan said the government could have a perception issue to address with the merger decision by Djerriwarrh Health being made by an administrator appointed by former

Health Minister Jill Hennessy, and not by a local board.

“If Mr Foley cannot give an assurance on local jobs, then unfortunately the government has a big task ahead of it to convince local residents that the government hasn’t taken advantage of there being no local board to challenge the merger and to fight for local jobs,” he said.

“This is not a reflection on the work of the administrator, but rather recognition that the government risks a serious perception issue should job losses occur in our community.”

A spokesperson for DjHS said in the joint statement issued two weeks ago, “there were some clear commitments made – including a commitment around jobs.”

The statement said “the immediate priority is certainty and confidence for staff and communities, and – as always – ensuring high quality care. Staff and community engagement has helped to define clear commitments should a voluntary amalgamation proceed: • Bacchus Marsh and Melton Regional Hospital will continue to operate as a community-based hospital.

• Grant Lodge residential aged care at Bacchus Marsh will be retained.

• There will be no reductions in overall health staffing numbers, and no losses to frontline clinical staff as a consequence of amalgamation.

• Local fundraising will continue to be directed to local health and care services.

• There will be ongoing community participation and engagement with local service planning.

• Clients and patients will continue to have choice as to where they access care.”

The report is now with the Department, and DjHS said there isn’t anything further they can add until any decision is made.

Experts will run through leadership styles

and relationship building, community development theory, local government and participatory democracy, and action planning, to get participants ready for community leadership.

People from all backgrounds are encouraged to register and attend. Applications open on 31 March, and close on 19 April.

A celebration event for successful participants will be held in September, with certificates of participation to be handed out.

A shave to save

By Lachlan Ellis A 9-year-old Greendale boy has smashed his fundraising goal of $560 in the World’s Greatest Shave, with the tally fast approaching $2,000.

Blake Conroy grew his hair out for two years, before deciding to shave it all off to raise funds for leukaemia patients and their families.

Proud dad Luke was full of praise for Blake.

“It was all bluff and bravado before I brought the clippers out, but then when I pulled them out it sunk in that ‘Oh yeah, I’m going to have no hair’…but no, he battled on like a little trooper,” Mr Conroy told the Moorabool News with a laugh.

“I’m very proud, I’m rapt with what he’s done. He had long hair; I think they were

talking about it [the World’s Greatest Shave] at school and he thought ‘That’s a good cause, if I’ve got to have a haircut I may as well wait and get it done for that’.

“He’s quite a thoughtful little fellow, so when he hears about something or sees something on TV he thinks ‘Maybe I can do that, maybe I can help’. He’s always thinking about ways he can help someone.”

At the time of writing, young Blake has raised $1,899.45 for the Leukaemia Foundation, which will go towards researching a cure for leukaemia and caring for victims and their families – including provision of food and rent relief for those suffering financial stress.

Hair raising experience

Shaving her head to raise awareness for cancer has been described as “nerve racking and scary”, by an 11-year-old Bacchus Marsh girl.

Amelia Bullen shaved her head on Friday March 12 at the Bacchus Marsh Golf Club in front of 70 of her closest family and friends, as part of the World’s Greatest Shave.

The brave youngster said the reason she participated in the event was a tribute to her nan who had been through cancer.

“When I asked her why she wanted to do it, she said she wanted to do it for her nan,” Amelia’s mum, Erin, said. “She said she wanted to raise money and awareness to support people who have to go through treatment.

“I think my mum was more emotional than I was when Amelia shaved her head because

she’s been through it,” she said.

Ms Bullen commended her daughter’s courage to shave her head, saying she initially tried to talk her out of it.

“I asked her if she would prefer to colour her hair instead, but she said no. Amelia told me that “cancer patients don’t get a choice, so I don’t think I should, if they lose their hair, so should I.”” The 11-year-old raised around $6,000 for the World’s Greatest Shave, with the money going to the Peter Mac and Leukemia Foundations.

“We are so proud of Amelia,” Ms Bullen said.

“Her determination, her thoughtfulness and her caring nature towards other people.

“She always puts others needs before her own, and it really does make us all super proud of her,” she said.

Illegal riding and driving on the rise

There has been an increase in trail bike riding and four-wheel driving in Moorabool’s parks and forests, and a government body is urging people to reconsider their choices when getting behind the wheel.

Over the last 12-months, parks and forests across the state have become popular places for people to visit for off-road riding and driving purposes.

While there is an extensive network of roads and tracks open to the public, it is believed illegal off-road activity is increasing.

In Moorabool, incidents of riding and driving off-road vehicles have been recorded at Blakeville (5), Morrisons (7), Mt Doran (3) and Spargo Creek (1). Two infringements have been issued at Blakeville.

Across the state, more than 100 infringements have been issued by the Conservation Regulator (Department of Environment, Land and Planning) since January 1.

Acting Director Regulatory Operations, Brian Hamer, says officers are conducting frequent patrols in state forests and they use advanced surveillance technology to identify illegal off-road driving and riding.

“It’s fantastic to see people enjoying our forests and parks across the state, however, it’s important people are using our public land responsibly.

“If you take a vehicle off-road to drive through our forests, you’re not only risking your own safety, but that of others who are hiking and bushwalking through the landscape, and you can cause significant

environmental damage,” he said.

Authorised officers are patrolling key locations across the state, targeting illegal trail bike and four-wheel driving activity, and on the spot fines of $165 apply.

The maximum fine for riding or driving on closed roads is $3,300, while damaging wildlife habitat can result in a fine of more than $8,000.

The Conservation Regulator works closely with recreational groups and asks them to consider these key points: • All vehicles including trail bikes must be registered, trail bike riders must hold a current motor bike licence.

• Stay on the formed roads and vehicle tracks – do not ride on natural terrain, in streams, or on informal single tracks.

• For your own safety, always ride with others and wear full personal protective equipment (PPE), including a helmet.

• Always carry a first aid kit, as well as a reliable means of communication. We know that the first hour after injury is critical to good recovery outcomes - make sure you are prepared.

• Unload and start your trail bike away from residents adjoining state forests (you value your riding, they value their peace and quiet) • Keep your speed and noise down when in, or near, camping and picnic areas, or approaching other forest users.

Timely responses to callouts The Victorian Government has released the latest quarterly response times from CFA and FRV branches across the state, with some interesting findings.

Covering the period from 1 July to 30 September 2020, the reports show the number of incidents responded to, how many of each class of incident were responded to, and how long responses took, for branches that responded to 10 or more incidents in those three months.

The CFA figures provided compare the fire service’s response times to the ‘Community Service Delivery Standard’, which sets a benchmark of 8 minutes to respond to Hazard Class 2 incidents, 10 minutes for Hazard Class 3, and 20 minutes for Hazard Class 4.

In Moorabool, the Bacchus Marsh CFA area responded to 36 incidents during the threemonth period, with 71 per cent of emergency incidents meeting the standard of 8 minutes.

90 per cent of emergency incidents took just over a minute longer than the standard, at 9 minutes and 4 seconds.

This is an improvement on Bacchus Marsh’s previous response times, with 90 per cent of responses from 1 April to 30 June 2020 responded to within a longer 10 minutes and 15 seconds. However, 78 per cent of incidents in that time were met within 8 minutes.

Ballan Fire Brigade was not included in the report, as it responded to less than 10 incidents from 1 July to 30 September 2020.

There were concerns that additional safety measures during the second wave of the pandemic would impact response times, but Acting Police and Emergency Services Minister, Danny Pearson, said he was proud to report that had not been the case.

“The data released highlights the ongoing dedication of our career and volunteer firefighters, who have worked hard to meet targets designed to keep Victorians safe during these challenging and extraordinary times,” Mr Pearson said.

“This was a period of significant disruption at the height of the second wave of the state’s coronavirus response [that] required members to adapt to extra safety measures including additional PPE requirements.”

Mr Pearson said through it all, “our firefighters didn’t miss a beat and continued to respond to provide Victorians with the best service possible.”

Stawell took the longest to respond to incidents, with 90 per cent of its 20 Hazard Class 2 incidents responded to within 21 minutes and 50 seconds, while Bayswater was the quickest, taking just 6 minutes and 38 seconds in 90 per cent of its 26 incidents.

Large list of charges

By Lachlan Ellis Magistrate Michelle Hodgson heard a rather extensive list of charges against a 32-yearold man on March 5 in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates’ Court, and whilst some were struck out, those that remained were serious.

At Daniel Large’s third contest mention, Magistrate Hodgson heard the accused was facing charges including the possession of methamphetamine, theft, and possessing a trafficable quantity of firearms.

The original prosecution case against Mr Large contained more than 25 charges.

Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Steve Repac told the court police had found improvised firearms and shotgun shells in Mr Large’s car.

“The accused was pulled over by police, he and a friend were searched, homemade firearms and shotgun shells were found in the car. Effectively they were handmade firearms, there is one firearm that is already made and appears like a proper firearm.

Another was a slam gun. It doesn’t have a trigger, a bullet is loaded into the back and a slamming mechanism causes the firearm to discharge,” Mr Repac said.

Senior Constable Repac told the court Mr Large had also broken into a property in Korweinguboora and stolen $1280 worth of goods, including a pair of Tasco binoculars.

Large was also accused of ‘holding’ a stolen camper van for $500, failing an oral fluid test,

possessing methamphetamine and driving while suspended.

His lawyer noted he had been in remand for 173 days, and the coronavirus pandemic had caused him to relapse into drug use.

“In 2018 Mr Large begun working and was completely abstinent from drugs for about 3½ years until this offending,” he said.

“When the coronavirus pandemic hit, Mr Large lost his job. As the father of a newborn, he lost his sense of purpose and ultimately relapsed into drug use. He became mixed up with the wrong people and began leaving home for days at a time.”

The Magistrate took into account a series of references and support statements, as well as the hardships Mr Large had faced, but said a period of imprisonment was unavoidable given the charges.

“It’s quite clear from your history that you have a serious problem with substance abuse, but it gives me some confidence that you had that three and a half years without using drugs. You do have the potential to change,” Magistrate Hodgson said.

“The penalty has to reflect the denunciation of your conduct and the protection of the community is something I have taken into account. These are such serious offences that I must impose a term of imprisonment.”

With 173 days already served, Mr Large was sentenced to an additional two months and one week of imprisonment.

Dear Editor, The Ballarat Courier announced in Saturday’s edition (20 March) that a new Federal seat combining Ballan and Bacchus Marsh would be established, and they are looking for comments.

I question the proposed name Hawke who had no connection with the area, or for that matter with Victoria. A better suggestion would be Hogan after Ned Hogan, a former Premier of Victoria, born at Wallace and moved to Bunding to complete his schooling.

He went to Kalgoorlie (WA) where he worked for the Westralia Timber & Firewood Co supplying wood to the town under appalling conditions. He became involved in the union movement to improve their conditions, returned to Ballan to recover from typhoid fever, bought a farm there, and was soon elected to State Parliament. He held his seat for 30 years during which time he was Premier on two occasions, Leader of the opposition, the second time Premier during the Great Depression, a tumultuous time in Australia.

He was a colorful personality and would still have cultural connections and family ties in Ballan.

Bryan Hanrahan Dunnstown Dear Editor, I am not a political animal. I am an accountant and for the past 40-years I have voted based on the economic policies of the parties at each election. This has meant I have voted both Labor and Liberal over the years. However, we are now in a different position.

I live in Bacchus Marsh and I am totally disillusioned with the recent developments in our region. Labor has totally deserted us. Even though we have voted them in regularly. The recent vote to prevent toxic waste coming to Maddingley, which was reported in the press, that all Labor members voted against, means any Labor members in our region voted to harm our community.

And if you think Liberal/Nationals will do anything different, think again.

The major parties force their members to vote along party lines, not for their communities they represent. So, I am going to suggest we rebel against both major parties. I suggest we all vote at the next election, but we put Labor and Liberal/Nationals last. I don’t care who

you put above them but put these last.

We have an opportunity with a new seat being created (Hawke). We can make a mark like never before. Both parties are going to throw resources at this seat. If we embarrass both major parties, they will suddenly realise that the community is not happy. If there are six House of Rep seats for voting, put Labor and Liberal at 5 and 6, then fill in above as you see fit.

This is not about individuals, but about the party machines that control the governing party.

We vote these people in to represent us, but they only do so if it suits their ambitions.

Gerry Monaghan Darley Dear Editor, I have just read with amusement the latest burst of opinionated ignorance from the Pro Transmission Towers correspondent., Ross Redwin (M/News 23/3) where he ‘presumes’ that all farming activity is the same and such operations as Line Irrigation and Aerial Spraying can be carried out under their “substantial easements”.

Interesting that he mentions being misled by misinformation from farmers.

I would advise him that I was told directly by an Ausnet Project Manager at Darley Park in November 2020, that underground transmission is too difficult because it needs a “a swimming pool sized concrete bunker”. every 400 metres. False. Please refer to the Brumby Government Transmission line to the Wonthaggi Desal Plant and Basslink.

Also, that Ausnet is confident there will be no fire risk on the line because they propose to turn off the power on high fire danger days (Transmission Lines don’t start fires??) and further, I was told that firefighting aircraft can operate within a few metres of these lines under strong winds and low visibility conditions. This is clearly not true.

In addition to this, I was informed that Australia does not have the industrial capability to provide steel and cabling etc. sufficient for their needs and that fully 100% of construction material will be imported from China and India.

Easter excitement back at Apple

By Lachlan Ellis The COVID pandemic meant a community radio station’s Easter celebration had to be cancelled in 2020, but the festivities were back on Friday March 19, with some special visitors from Mambourin and Merrimu Special Schools.

The Easter bunny hopped into the studio of Apple 98.5fm at Halletts Way in Bacchus Marsh, to hand out chocolate bunnies and Easter eggs to the partygoers and, was soon joined by Transformers Optimus Prime and Bumblebee.

Terecia Page is the Apple FM Secretary, Station Manager and Sponsorship Coordinator, and said it was exciting for

the community station to be able to celebrate with the local special schools once again.

“It was really disappointing last year not having an Easter celebration, and our Christmas celebration was only small.

It’s great to be back,” Ms Page told the Moorabool News.

“They get really excited coming here for Easter and Christmas and doing the Hour of Power every Friday. The Mambourin and Merrimu groups come here from 10.30 until 11.30 on Fridays, some take turns running the panel, picking music and dancing. They love it,” she said.

Apple FM also gives the special needs community the chance to run their own shows outside the Hour of Power,

including Scott Cummings’ show which he runs from 2 pm until 4 pm every Wednesday.

Mr Cummings prepares his own show and playlist, with pop music on some weeks and “famous old school songs that everyone is familiar with” on others.

“My favourites are Carly Rae Jepsen and Selena Gomez,” he said.

Apple FM President Karellyn Dangar made sure to thank Graham Gillespie from local business Rustel, whose kind donation to the community station made the Transformers’ visit possible.

Myrniong CFA and local Moorabool police were in attendance at all times to help keep the Myrniong PS students and parents riding safe on their journey to school.

Bike for the hike

By Lachlan Ellis Kids across Australia got on their bikes to take part in the 16th annual ‘National Ride2School Day’ – including Moorabool students.

This year Ride2School Day was held on Friday 19 March, with the event’s organiser, the Bicycle Network, encouraging students to ride their bike as a healthier option to taking the car or bus.

Balliang East Primary School Principal Caryn Fox said despite the event being “a bit of an ordeal” to organise, the school’s families had strongly supported the event since the school began participating in 2013.

“Our school is unique in the way we do it. The majority of our students travel 20 or more minutes to us from neighbouring towns; therefore, we have a ‘meeting place’ for the students to be dropped off at, with their bikes,” Ms Fox told the Moorabool News.

“The staff ride to this spot and meet them and then escort them to the school. We then ride back to this spot at the end of the day and the students get collected from there.

“It can be an ordeal for some families, as all the students participate, and the parents need to be able to transport bikes for all the siblings. Having said that, the parents are very supportive and make sure they get the bikes to school for their kids.”

Around 350,000 students participated across the country with Bicycle Network General Manager of Public Affairs, Anthea Hargreaves, saying the day was a great introduction to going to school a healthier way.

“National Ride2School Day is a fun way for students and parents to experience the joy of riding a bike. There’s no better time to make riding to school part of your routine,” Ms Hargreaves said.

“Riding to school is free and fun and, can also help students perform better in the classroom. Studies have shown students arrive at school energised, alert and more ready to learn.”

Tree-mendous fundraising effort

By Caitlin Bewley Two local organisations joined forces last festive season to raise funds for the community, the most successful to date.

The Rotary Club of Bacchus Marsh presented a cheque for just over $5,500 to the Bacchus Marsh SES unit following their 2020 Christmas tree sales.

International Chair of Bacchus Marsh Rotary, Scott Pepin, said the annual event, which has been running for the last five years, usually generates a lot of money for both clubs.

“Back in July last year things were pretty dire, but at that time I approached Bacchus Marsh SES Controller, Bill Robson, to garnish his unit’s support to run the 2020 Rotary-SES Christmas Tree fundraiser,” he said.

“With restrictions easing and uncertainty still high on our agenda, we pushed forward with planning, ensuring we met the requirements of SES and State Government COVID requirements, it meant that we had to be creative with implementing new sales strategies.”

Although this was not a record year for tree sales, Mr Pepin said it was amazing to see the community supporting the two local organisations during hard times.

“Our community came out in droves to support their local SES Unit and Rotary Club,” he said. “It was a very satisfying result in light of the occurrences of the preceding months.”

Unit SES Controller Bill Robson said his team are grateful for the efforts Rotary continue to put in to support the local community.

“This was the most money we’ve raised to date,” Mr Robson said. “And it really is a credit to Rotary for all the hard work they continue to put in each year.”

Mr Robson said 100 per cent of the proceeds from the tree sales goes back into the community.

“We really do appreciate people’s support throughout this time.”

Scott Pepin was also awarded the Alf Wignall award at a ceremony for his ongoing commitment to the club.

Big crowds allowed back

Large crowds will be allowed back at community football games this year, after an announcement from the State Government last week.

On Tuesday 16 March, the Government released an update on “the new process for lower risk Tier 2 public events” – which includes community football matches in the Ballarat and Central Highlands Football Leagues.

Under the new rules, community football matches will be allowed up to 5,000 spectators, so long as attendance does not exceed 75 per cent of the ground’s capacity limit.

As long as the criteria is met, football matches can go ahead with just an attestation form submission and a COVIDSafe Event Plan, without needing to wait for Government approval.

The relaxation of restrictions has been lauded by both AFL Victoria and local football clubs.

Head of AFL Victoria and former North Melbourne coach, Brad Scott, said this is a really positive development for community football across the state, especially clubs and leagues expecting large crowd numbers.

“With this latest development, community footy will be as close as possible to ‘back to normal’ when the season starts, which is really exciting.”

Club, Mark Shelly, said the move was exciting for sport in Moorabool.

“In reality, our only game that would probably be affected by the old limit of 1,000 spectators is against Bacchus Marsh, but what it does do is make things easier for club volunteers as far as policing crowds,” Mr Shelly said.

“Community sport this year is going to be so important for community members’ mental health. Our club seems really eager, there’s a good vibe around the club. Players, members, spectators, et cetera are really looking forward to Round 1..there was so much disappointment last year.”

Mr Shelly said the other big plus is the financial aspect.

“I’m sure a lot of clubs did it tough financially last year. To have crowds back generating revenue will be really important for community footy.”

To be COVIDSafe, sports venues must keep records of all attendees, have COVID Marshalls on the premises during sporting events, supply staff with PPE and more.

Providing false or misleading details on an attestation form can see a corporate body issued with a $49,566 fine, and individuals with a fine of $9,913.20.

The Ballarat Football Netball League season starts at 2.15pm on Saturday April 17 with Redan taking on North Ballarat, while the Central Highlands Football Netball League begins at 2.30pm the same day, with Bungaree playing Buninyong.

Having an autumn baiting program is generally part of a well-planned pest animal management program for many producers and land managers and, Agriculture Victoria is reminding all users of 1080 pest animal bait products of the possible risks to nontarget animals.

Bait products containing 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) is one tool used to control foxes, wild dogs and other pest animals that can have a destructive impact on biodiversity, native animals and livestock.

In order to achieve effective pest animal management, it is important for all landholders to work together to implement a range of integrated control methods in line with best practice.

Agriculture Victoria Statewide Specialist in Chemicals Alex Perera said the supply of 1080 products is regulated in Australia and they can only be used in Victoria by persons who have done specific training and hold a valid permit or licence.

“Users in Victoria are also legally required to follow and comply with the directions for the use of 1080 and PAPP pest animal bait products in Victoria,” Mrs Perera said.

“Dogs and foxes are among the most sensitive species to 1080, so domestic dogs are extremely susceptible to 1080 baits.

“Properly conducted baiting programs provide a safe and effective control option.

“But off-target poisonings of domestic dogs can occur when users do not notify their neighbours or fail to erect signs at entry points to areas where baits have been laid, which are both legal requirements.”

Notification and signage are specifically aimed at preventing domestic animals from gaining access to 1080, either directly from baits or contaminated carcasses.

Mrs Perera said it gives people the opportunity to take appropriate action and keep their animals safe.

“1080 is an important tool to protect environmental assets and primary production and, to ensure there is on-going access to these products, bait users must take their responsibilities seriously and always ensure the risks associated with their baiting program are correctly managed,” she said.

Water boost for Parwan growth There is plenty of infrastructure works being undertaken in Moorabool, more recently a new pipeline.

The works are underway in Bacchus Marsh, with Western Water assuring customers there will be no interruption to water or sewer services.

The pipeline will be laid in the road reserve on the north side of Griffith Street, from Franklin Street west to Barry Street, and will connect to an existing pipe along Parwan Road, which finished construction last month, between South Maddingley Road and East Maddingley Road.

Western Water said the growth of Parwan is also a focus for both Council and the Victorian Planning Authority, with the water

authority stating the new pipeline would help supply new businesses and homes in the area.

“The project will improve water pressure downstream in Parwan to businesses and rural properties and will help meet the needs from expected growth in the area in the coming years,” Western Water CEO Graham Holt said.

The company has spent $870,000 on the project, which is expected to be completed in late May. Ongoing works also include a $6.7m upgrade of the Peelmans Lane sewer pump station, and the construction of an $8.4m sewer rising main from Peelmans Lane to the Bacchus Marsh Recycled Water Plant.

With proposed amalgamation at the forefront of operations at Djerriwarrh Health Services (DjHS) in Bacchus Marsh, the Health Service has appointed a new CEO. Belinda Scott resigned last Thursday (17 March) after three years in the role, moving on to “a senior health service role leading mental health reforms” according to a DjHS media release.

Tony McNamara will be the replacement Acting Chief Executive Officer, who currently works as DjHS’ Chief Financial Officer.

Dr John Ballard is the DjHS Administrator and wished Ms Scott well and thanked her for her tireless service and excellent leadership during her three years at the helm.

“The cornerstone of any health service is strong, focused leadership and Djerriwarrh Health Services has been fortunate to have had this in spades,” he said.

“Belinda has embedded major cultural and clinical changes across the Health Service, while simultaneously managing the allencompassing demands and local impact of the global pandemic.

“She has worked closely with Tony, the

executive and all our staff, Auxiliary and volunteers to deliver outstanding levels of clinical care for all patients and community, demonstrating remarkable energy and dedication. The role leading mental health reform is a wonderful opportunity for Belinda and we wish her well.”

Mr McNamara said his number one priority would be to support staff, volunteers, and community in ongoing delivery of quality care at DjHS. “I will work diligently with our teams to ensure continued quality care across our catchment, with a continued focus on clinical excellence.” he said.

In a statement, DjHS said the change in leadership would have “no impact on the potential voluntary amalgamation of Djerriwarrh Health Services with Western Health”.

The joint recommendation for amalgamation has been sent to the Secretary of the Department of Health.

Season for stock staggers

By Elle Moyle District Veterinary Officer The current extraordinary season of rainfall and pasture growth leading into late summer and autumn may be setting farmers up for a diabolical perennial ryegrass staggers (PRGS) year in many areas of the State.

PRGS is seen when sheep graze tall, dry ryegrass (Lolium perenne) particularly in late summer and autumn, and often following sufficient rain to stimulate limited pasture growth.

Similar years have been seen previously in 1986 and 2002, when PRGS was prominent.

PRGS is usually observed as temporary incoordination (hence the name ‘staggers’) in sheep and cattle. This occurs when endoph0079tes (fungus) are established in older stands of perennial ryegrass pastures.

The endophytes produce a toxin that protects the plant from insects and helps with establishment, but also interferes with the nervous system of sheep.

Sheep, cattle and horses are all susceptible however PRGS is usually seen more in younger animals. Weaners should be closely monitored during this time.

PRGS develops within 7–14 days of the ingestion of toxic pasture.

First signs are usually fine tremors of the head. More severe signs are seen with exercise or under stress, such as mustering.

These include stiff movements and incoordination, often resulting in collapse with stiffly extended limbs.

The ingested toxin can also induce high body temperatures, so sheep may try to cool themselves in dams and troughs, sometimes drowning or otherwise injuring themselves in the process.

There is no specific treatment for PRGS. It is best to remove an affected flock from the source of the problem by moving them quietly (without a dog) into another paddock.

It is important to avoid stressing affected stock, as this will worsen their condition.

Animals will recover once removed from the pasture for one to two weeks. Cases will cease following a significant break in the season and onset of cooler weather.

If exposure to toxin is prolonged, permanent neurological damage can occur.

PRGS could be a significant issue this season as a result of the rainfall seen across parts of Victoria in the past six months, which has led to significant pasture growth and standing feed bank going into summer.

It is recommended that farmers act early to graze off ryegrass to prevent having tall, dry ryegrass in late summer.

Phalaris staggers (PS) Phalaris staggers (PS) is a common syndrome that is associated with the intake of green, actively growing phalaris at a time when it contains toxic alkaloids.

The risk of PS is associated with soil cobalt levels (marginal or deficient in cobalt), animals’ access to ingestion of soil and the amount of phalaris in a pasture.

Typically, PS is of low risk in summer however it may occur at any time of the year, especially late autumn/winter.

If you have had significant summer rainfall that has either led to early growth of phalaris or the rain has flattened tall grass that may reduce the level of soil ingestion (and thus dietary cobalt), then you may experience PS in your flock earlier than usual.

Clinical signs of PS may occur after 14 days of grazing green, actively growing phalaris and can occur up to five months after sheep are taken off phalaris pasture.

The clinical signs include head nodding and bunny hopping with a wide hindleg-based gait. These signs are often noticed when mustering or handling.

Mildly affected animals may recover; the chance of recovery is higher the more rapid the onset of signs. If the symptoms are more severe, there is no specific treatment, and the animal should be euthanased.

PS can be prevented by cobalt supplementation: two intraruminal cobalt bullets (will prevent PS for three years) or cobalt foliar sprays (annually soon after the autumn break) are the most effective ways to prevent PS in high-risk areas.

Phalaris staggers (PS) • associated with grazing green phalaris for at least 14 days, combined with low cobalt intake • ingested soil is a major source of dietary cobalt • La Niña increases summer risk of PS, particularly if rain events cause enough matting of dry feed to prevent soil ingestion • prevent with cobalt bullets every three years or annual pasture spray.

Computer said no, to big trucks on Woolpack

By Lachlan Ellis B-Double trucks are still permitted on Woolpack Road in Bacchus Marsh, despite a technical issue telling truckies otherwise.

Earlier this year, the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) changed Woolpack Road’s status in its system, telling users that B-Double drivers required a permit to use the road.

A Moorabool Shire Council spokesperson said Council – which is the responsible authority for Woolpack Road – had made no changes to the road regarding permits, and the NHVR had made an error in reclassifying it.

“It appears that the ‘B-Double’ status has changed in the National Heavy Vehicle

Regulator (NHVR) system, probably as a result of a bridge assessment we have recently undertaken,” Council’s spokesperson told the Moorabool News.

“The status wasn’t meant to change, and we will ask NHVR to revert it to where it was.

Under the temporary status change, it’s not that B-Doubles can no longer use Woolpack Road, it’s that they require a permit, much the same as most of the local road network,” he said.

Dan Nicholls from the Department of Transport confirmed that B-Doubles do not need a permit to use Woolpack Road.

“Essentially, trucks don’t need a permit to operate on that road. Most B-Doubles, provided they don’t exceed 62.5 tonnes, can operate on that road.” he said.

Mentors for women in local government

By Lachlan Ellis Extra funding for newly elected women to council is coming to Moorabool.

The State Government has announced the boost for its female councillor mentor program, a move backed by local councillors and MPs alike.

An additional $29,000 will be provided to the Australian Local Government Women’s Association Victoria (ALGWA Victoria), to expand its mentoring program.

There are 43 newly elected Victorian female councillors who have been paired with experienced mentors, who are all current or former councillors.

Ally Munari and Moira Berry are Moorabool’s first-term female councillors, and both agree that having a mentor would be valuable – though there was some disagreement on the focus of the funding.

“I think it’s a wonderful idea…I think it would be wonderful for all new councillors to have a mentor in some way,” Cr Munari told the Moorabool News.

“I think any help is good help, anything offered to you, you should take in this position. We’ve been offered a lot of Council training, and if you feel you need more, it’s there. For example, I’ve recently done a four-hour media training session through Council.”

Cr Munari said she felt the training should be offered to every person, because it’s about the right person, not whether they’re a man or a woman.

“That right person should be offered the same amount of training everyone gets offered.”

On the other hand, Cr Berry was more in favour of the focus on women in politics.

“I think it’s part of the push to encourage more women in politics. I feel like our gender difference can mean we do things differently, see things differently and provide new perspectives…it’s good to have a mix,” she said.

Cr Berry added there were aspects of being a councillor she would have liked advice about prior to entering Council.

“There is a lot more to Council like planning and public development decisions we’re making, and I haven’t had any experience in that prior,” she said.

“I think if you had a little bit more knowledge on those sorts of things before nominating it’d be great, there’s more to being a Councillor than just being a figurehead in the community.”

Council CEO Derek Madden said Council supported all initiatives aimed at getting women into local politics, including the ALGWA mentoring program.

“Council has actively promoted the encouragement of women to enter local government. We fully support mentoring programs or any support or training programs that help Councillors fulfil their role on Council,” he said.

“The gender imbalance of Councillors across all Victorian Councils demonstrates the need for targeted mentoring programs. If women know they have access to programs like this, it might help make the decision to run for Council a little easier.”

In the October 2020 local Council election in Moorabool, ten of the 20-candidates were women, with females elected to three of the seven positions available.

State Government backs gender equality State MP for Buninyong, Michaela Settle, said female representation was just as important in local politics as it is at the State and Federal levels.

“It is important that we have women in decision making roles, so people who understand the issues are there to make decisions. As Ruth Ginsberg said – ‘Women belong in all places where decisions are being made,’” Ms Settle said.

“This program focusses on giving training and mentoring to first-term female councillors.

There is a lot to learn in those early years and having access to a mentor can help a new councillor grow and make their contribution to their community.

“Women have had low representation at a local government level for far too long. We want to support any new female councillor to stay on and excel. Gender equality makes communities stronger.”

Victorian Minister for Women, Gabrielle Williams, added that gender equality “benefits everyone, and makes councils, communities and Victoria stronger”.

The State Government has set a target of 50-50 gender representation in local government by 2025. 35 of the 72 Government MPs, and more than 50 per cent of Cabinet ministers, are women.

Bacchus Marsh played against Hoppers Crossing for the Division 5, Section 1 Metro title, and they didn’t disappoint.

They had finished the season well clear on top of the ladder and since recorded a convincing Semi-Final win over Werribee, so hopes were high for a similar performance on Grand Final Day. However, Hoppers Crossing adapted to the damp conditions quicker than the Marsh to shoot out to an early lead until the strong rink of Michael Reismann, fresh off a 24 shot SemiFinal win the day before, put the hammer down, but was still in desperate need of another rink to lift with him. And that they did.

Skipper Ross Greening struggled early but picked up a rare seven shot gain to send them on their way, allowing their opponents just three shots for the remainder of the match.

In the end, the score looked very comfortable with three of the four Bacchus Marsh rinks winning their matches to assist in the overall 36-shot victory.

The Division 7 team reached the Semi-Finals on Saturday (March 20) but unfortunately were not able to get over the line against a stronger Sunshine VRI side.

The club overall is already looking forward to a successful 2021/22 season.

EXPECT Bacchus Marsh to be one of the big improvers in 2021.

New playing coach Tom German has targeted specific player types that will benefit the Cobras both on and off the field.

“I’m all about (club) overall improvement,” German said.

The 30-year-old midfielder brings with him the cream of the crop from his former club Mansfield, in the Goulburn Valley League.

Ryan Bartlett (Playing assistant coach - key back), Lachlan Christopher (half back/mid), Jackson Kirley (small forward/back and Josh Martin (ruck) join German’s former teammate Bryce Carroll (Keilor Park), as the new faces at Cobra land. When you include Jake Owen’s brother Jaydens’ six-foot-six frame into the mix after crossing from Gisborne, there’s genuine reason for Cobra fans to get excited.

Dangerous forward duo Jake Owen and Aaron Willetts can eye similar goal returns of 2018 with the skill injection into the midfield. German is the prime example having led the 2019 Goulburn Valley’s League Medal count after seven rounds, before a broken hand cruelled his chances. Christopher too, is a highly skilled acquisition while ball magnet Nick Stuhldrier and Harrison King will look to improve on their efficiency by foot into the forward 50 and, take their own game(s) to the next level. They’re more than capable.

This new voice at Maddingley Park however, is on a mission.

“We’ve recruited structural players that will fill the voids of 2019 and allow us to execute a game style around,” German said.

“We’ll be fit and striving for consistency.”

Cobra fans will be rapt to hear help has arrived for tireless ruckman Daniel Burton. Josh Martin is training solidly is likely to assume the ruck duties with Burton, and the lead role if Burton’s work commitments (fire brigade) result in his absence. Potential star Harry King should be primed for a breakout season reaping reward from his pre-season buy-in.

While Orr’s return on the goal front was modest (19) last season (2019), the structural advantages and flexibility he brings to the lineup will be sorely missed. Not only will the Bloods look a little smaller going forward, they’ll need to find a pinch hitting relief option for Ben Archard in the ruck.

Bloods coach Aaron Tymms acknowledged replacing the clubs 2019 Runners Up Best and Fairest won’t be easy. Furthermore, you can add gun midfielders Shaun Campbell (Parkside) and more recently Connor Griffiths (Yarrawonga) into the mix of star exits.

“That trio especially will leave a big hole that’s for sure,” he said.

“We’ve been throwing the magnets around a bit over pre-season trying to find the right mix forward with Orry leaving, and (now) how the midfield group will look for us come Round one,” “I expect we’ll see players in different roles this year and we could play Ryan Carter forward but, in my opinion, he’s one of the best ‘shut down’ defenders in the comp.” he said.

Bloods fans will expect be a part of the business end conversation for a third successive season after rising to prominence in 2018 with a Runners up result that exceeded expectation. The writing was on the wall for another tilt at a flag in 2019 but their form by their own standards was patchy at best before falling short to Sebastopol in the penultimate week of finals.

Tymms hopes an uninterrupted pre-season and injury free list will hold them in good stead early for a tough opening month of footy.

“In 2019 we couldn’t even get on our ground until Round one which wasn’t ideal,” he said.

“And with Archard and Denham going down early with hamstring injuries, it had us on the back foot a little.”

While the Bloods had just five players play every game 2019, they were matched only by East Point for the fewest number of players used (34), mounting the argument that attrition rate is one thing, and who gets injured is another.

Tymms is hopeful there is enough improvement within the club to take the next step in 2021.

Kevin Klix (Deer Park - small forward), Lachlan Watkins (Coburg, Melton South) and youngster Lachlan Phillips (Western Jets/Melton Centrals midfield) have been welcoming additions for the Bloods in testing times for all clubs post-covid, while dangerous forward Jordyn Cotter returns after a lengthy lay off with injury.

“I know we have a young list, most of the guys are still 21-22yo but we think there is enough talent here to give it a shake,” Proven match winning forward Braedan Kight is said to be flying on the track while experienced trio Ben Archard, Matt Denham and runaway 2019 B&F winner Dyson Stevens are moving freely ahead of the shouldering duties that await them in the new season.

Shaun Campbell (to Parkside), Daniel Walker (to Melton South), Darren Haby (WRFL), Michael Hibbert (work), Mitch Brockwell (to Diggers Rest) join Orr, Campbell and Griffiths as the other notable absentees for 2021.

Who knows what influence the departed and a difficult draw, will have on the Bloods in 2021?

Gun forward/mid Jordy Johnston joined Geelong in the VFL pre-covid for one final roll of the dice at a higher level. For Bridges and the Kangaroos, it’s a double-edged sword.

“We’re really excited about Jordy and his prospects with Geelong,” he said.

“If it doesn’t work out, we’ll be the beneficiaries at club level, but fingers crossed he can have an impact in the VFL, he’s certainly good enough.”

The talented Jacob Brown and Joseph Dodd remain on Essendon’s VFL list despite expectations of featuring predominantly with ‘East’ (feeder club) in 2021.

Jesse Palmer (Collingwood VFL, ex Northern Blues), who was set to join the Kangas in 2020 has since moved on to Western Australia (WAFL).

The 36-year-old brings with him a wealth of experience and flag success both as a player and captain with North Ballarat (VFL) and more recently as coach of Springbank (Central Highlands).

“I’m excited for the season ahead,” he said.

“I’m not here to make any drastic changes to the game plan that got us within three goals of a premiership in 2019, but our lack of efficiency by foot over that final series was one area we identified room for improvement,” he said.

“We had enough of it (the ball), but we lacked polish especially going forward.”

Complacency on the back of a Runners Up year is not a word you would associate with the ‘Burras given their sought-after additions in the off season.

Jack Richards (Warrnambool) looms the immediate replacement for departed ruckman Toby Thoolen who has returned to Swan Hill for family reasons. *Michael Lockyer (Lismore – 6’ med forward/wing) and 3Connor O’Shea (Maryborough - half back/mid) will add leg speed and skill while youngster Adam Haslett (Aararat - half back) is thriving with the rise in grade to BFNL company. Jacob Breguet (23 yo Merbein – 6’4” ruck) will provide some much-needed relief for Richards while up and comer Liam Stow (North Warrnambool – 6’3”) who trained with the club in 2019 is a hopeful hit-up, third tall forward option. Nick Hausler (forward - pinch hit ruck) and Jack McNabb (key back) assume the bonus recruits tag for 2021 given they missed near all of 2019 for the ‘Burras with injury.

This blend of youth and experience is sure to add depth quality to a group that isn’t shy on top end talent. Lachlan Cassidy, Luke Kiel, Tony Lockyer and Daniel Widgery are said to be primed for Round one while Michael Powell (leg) has had the best part of 12 months to fully recover from injury.

Dynamic forward James Keeeble is training well and continues to build completing the majority of drills. Potential young guns Jed Hill (Ballarat) and Jack Bramby (Rebels) have also been bonus acquisitions.

The ‘Burras lose Captain Tom Peterson (AFL Queensland), Brett Goodes (retired), Geoffrey Lovett (Central Highlands), Jordan Gercovich (Rokewood) and Hamish Everitt (Rokewood).

Searl was disappointed Goodes 37, won’t be going around again.

“He’s (Brett) an old mate of mine from the VFL days, I would’ve loved to have him, if only for half a season.”

The ‘Burras will be ready to fire as match simulation ramps up in preparation for Round one’s blockbuster Grand Final replay against the Kangas.

Searl’s motto ahead of 2021 is crystal clear.

“Go one better,” he said.

Lions roar back-to-back Darley Cricket Club – By Todd Whelan

Grand Final v Golden Point Darley has defeated Golden Point by five wickets in Saturday’s BCA Grand Final at the Eastern Oval, securing back-to-back Premiership titles in the process.

Handy lower order batsman Madushanka Ekanayake 24* (13) smashed two fours and a towering six over mid-off to reach the target in style, sending the Lions faithful into a frenzy. Fellow players, supporters, family, and friends alike stormed the ground to join ‘Eka’ and not out batsman Mitch Ward 22 (53) to share a moment that could only be described as pure jubilation.

(Now) Two-time Premiership Lions coach Brian Wheelahan struggled to contain his emotions in the aftermath as he tried to deliver his victory speech to the players and support crew.

“I’m lost for words,” Wheelahan said.

“You guys may not play again together in your lifetimes so be sure to savour this moment.

“It really has been a journey of ups and downs from the outset and, people wrote us off and we’ve responded as only a champion team could.

“Again, I couldn’t be more proud,” he said.

Trying to establish ‘the favorites tag’ heading into Saturday’s season decider wasn’t easy. Darley were peaking at the right time having won seven games from their last eight but were facing Golden Point on their home deck and on an unbeaten run of five games of their own. Ironically, Saturday was a repeat match-up of the 2019/20 Grand Final that never was - over before it started due to covid. So when you add a 1-1 head-2-head result this season into the ‘grudge’ match decider, the marginal ‘favorite’ would be determined at the toss. And why?

Seven out of ten games played at Eastern Oval were won by the side batting first. Golden Point had won six of their eight games at Eastern Oval including four out of five batting first. Darley on the other hand had been just as convincing batting first albeit at other venues with nine wins from ten.

One could be forgiven thinking the team batting second would have the job ahead. It came as no surprise that Golden BAC C H U S keen M A R S H to Point after winning the toss elected to bat and were emulate their season average total on Eastern Oval when batting first - 218.

But beware of a hungry Lion.

Darley opening bowlers Benny Longhurst (2/41) and Madushanka Ekanayake struck early to have Golden Point on the back foot at 2/9. Drew Locke’s brilliant catch centimetres off the ground, to remove Simon Ogilvie (1) would set the tone in the field for the remainder of the innings as the Lions went on to take a season high eight catches, spread among six different players.

Longhurst took the prized wicket of Joshua White (24) out caught behind when the score had reached 51. White had

been a thorn in the Lions side at their previous two meetings with scores of 23 and 76*, not to mention his 800-run season @61 - currency on his particular wicket was through the roof.

When James Lewis (18) became the fifth Golden Point wicket to fall on 85, momentum was clearly with the defending champions before Manjula DeZoysa (73) 94 cut loose, dispatching eight boundaries and two sixes off most, if not all of the Lions attack. They didn’t help their own cause dropping DeZoysa on 66 and 67 but were not made to pay as Rahmatullah Khwaja (3/40) took advantage of a leading edge from the number four that spooned straight back to him. At 7/143, the run rate suggested Golden Point could reach near 200 and have the Lions 11 under pressure in a chase for the title. But Khwaja, Hasi Wickramsinghe (1/12) and Ekanayake (2/26) would deny the challengers, bowling them out soon after for 165 - the exact score Darley made batting first in their Round 10 loss to Golden Point at Eastern Oval.

Needing 166 to win in reply from 48 overs (rain delay overs reduction) the Lions duo of Danza Hyatt and Anthony Taylor weren’t about to die wondering in the chase. In fact, Taylor (27) 26 and Hyatt’s (26) 34 helped ease the pressure to play a large part in the nature of the win. But there were nervous moments as both openers were dismissed with the score on 56, and the innings in need of a rebuild. Lions captain Bradley Barnes (22) 27 again looked dangerous with his ball striking before he became the third wicket to fall on 87. When Khwaja (3) 20 departed to make it 4/99, the Lions support crew were right to feel a little uneasy as chewing fingernails returned in vogue.

Mitch Ward joined ‘Hasi’ at the crease for an old-fashioned dig in. It was during this period the game could swing either way. Full credit to the Lions middle order duo, who staved off the challengers who wouldn’t give up the fight. ‘Hasi’ (34) 79 toiled for as long as he could before given out LBW trying to force the issue after a stalemate at the crease between bat and ball. At 5/131 the Lions still needed a further 35. While Ward looked solid without scoring once (3) 33, he displayed the patience and maturity to time his run perfectly given the situation as his last 19 runs came at a run a ball, providing the perfect wingman role for Ekanayake (24*)13 who blasted the Lions to a memorable victory. *Darley Cricket Club officially wraps up their season with their Presentation Night on Friday April 9.

Ballan Bowling Club Results – Grand Final v Creswick Division 3 Saturday saw the resumption of play in the Grand final between Ballan and Creswick.

The day started with Ballan behind by 7-shots and they were quick to reduce the deficit and hold a slender lead during the middle of play. Not to be outdone, Creswick kept fighting back and the score seesawed for most of the rest of the day. Unfortunately for Ballan, at the end of the day, it was Creswick who were able to hold on and win by 5-shots.

The club will host their pairs and tournament in the next couple of weeks, with social bowls to be held this Good Friday, all welcome.

Ballan, led

by Ciaran Boland, tried their hearts out in the field and definitely showed they were there to play. It took a while for wickets to come but the team stuck together and fielded brilliantly with good pressure creating 3 run outs. Clancy Matheson and Ethan Boland continued to take their game to another level during the finals series, bowling beautifully and working tirelessly in the field. After bowling super tight last week, Aussie McIlwaine switched roles with Ned Loft to wicket keep taking two crucial catches and Ned bowling very well for 7 consecutive overs and picking up a wicket.

Following the innings change, Ballan struggled to score.

Clancy Matheson continued his impressive determination with the bat from the previous week to not lose his wicket and support the remaining batters. Clancy had an outstanding finals series and was rewarded with Player of the Finals.

It wasn’t the way the U15s wanted to end the season however, the team is proud of what they achieved this season.

Under 17s Ballan v Napoleans/Sebastopol (Day 2) Finally, after two days of wash outs, the team were able to get to bat.

With Ballan chasing 195, they lost an early wicket to be 1/4.

George Muir and Matt Golding were able to steady the ship with a 51-run partnership. When George was dismissed for 18, it started a steady downward flow of wickets, with Matt putting on 45 before departing at 6/113. A special mention to Heath Doherty who batted at 11 with a broken foot, making a gallant 3 not out.

Unfortunately, Ballan fell short by 64 runs to be Runners Up.

“I know this will mean a lot this win tonight for the Hoban family with the battle Gary’s got on his hands at the moment,” Sugars said.

Tangoingwithsierra returned from a yearlong break to record a fourth victory on the trot for Gary Hoban, a pick-me-up for the trainer who’s battling ill-health, before Bulletproof Boy brought the widest of grins to trainer-driver Scott Ewen’s face with a trademark last stride swoop to win at odds.

“Craig and whoever’s around him at the moment are doing a terrific job with the team that they have. Every now and again you get special moments like this that mean more to us as well because you know it means so much to someone else. It’s a real positive part of our job that we get to bring so much joy to people along the way. “

And a further layer was added to the feelgood cake when Moonshine Linda rattled down the sprint lane to win the Group 3 Woodlands Stud Carlotta’s Pride Trotters Free For All for trainer David Miles, reinsman Michael Bellman and ownerbreeders Neville and Michael Pangrazio.

The victory was something of a procession with Tangoingwithsierra defying a punting drift by cruising to the front from gate three and winning handsomely in a brisk 1:53.1 mile rate.

Bellman told Trots Vision victory in the $24,000 headliner was “a little bit” special, though the much-travelled reinsman said every win “means so much to owners and trainers”.

“There are so many great people and families,” Bellman said. “Their kids look up to you and things like that, you don’t take much notice of it at the time, but when you win a decent race and people text message and send messages … it’s pretty humbling so many people think so much of you.

“It’s just great that I can repay a bit of faith and they put up with my antics and everything. It’s a great job.”

And he certainly did a great job on Saturday night, using Moonshine Linda early from the gates and sliding to the pegs behind leader

The win was also reward for the Hobans’ patience and persistence, with the Sportswriter mare unraced in 13 months heading into Saturday.

Having his first drive on the Group 1 winner, Bellman launched late, and Moonshine Linda scored by 1.5 metres to register her first win since August 2019.

“We were banking on the fact that if we didn’t get across the fence Red Hot Tooth

would come around (and provide us cover),” Bellman said. “When it worked out the way it did, I was very happy.”

There were also welcome smiles in the Hoban camp, with owner-breeder Craig Hoban on hand to team with reinsman Greg Sugars and set Tangoingwithsierra up for a 10th career win.

“She had some problems with her rear hocks,” Craig Hoban told Trots Vision.

“She had to have six months off after the Victorian Oaks when she was scratched in the final, she came back, had three starts and unfortunately did the other side. “(Another) six months off, walk for a month, jog for two months, hobble for a month and then give her a month off, and then go through the whole process (again). It’s been a long six months, but it’s worth it when you get back on track.”
