By Helen Tatchell Sunflowers are blooming in the shire, currently the flavour of autumn, and you should see the size of them.

Moorabool is adorned with yellow canola fields, attracting thousands of visitors each year for amazing photo opportunities, and now, it is the crops of sunflowers attracting locals and tourists to Greendale and Dunnstown.

Greendale Sunflowers was born to farmers Simon and Anita Lidgett in a 15-acre paddock last year.

“We planted out last November and the ground needs to be at 16-degrees Celsius,” Mr Lidgett said.

“We have grown sunflowers before, about 25-years ago and thought maybe it was time to put in another crop, as they are popular.”

In 3-4 short months the ‘Fields of Gold’ have grown from seed to over six-foot tall.

“The rainfall definitely was in our favour this year,” Mr Lidgett said.

The yellow attraction in Moorabool is not just limited to canola and sunflower fields, with corn and maize crops also becoming a tourist attraction at Donegan’s Farm at Gordon.

The fields are popular with parents and children, with social media going into a meltdown with sunflower photos.

A guide for fungi foragers

By Helen Tatchell A mushroom is as autumn as the changing colours of the leaves on the trees and, they are coming to a paddock or forest near you.

If you are a forager and enjoy the wild mushrooming experience, then a new book is a must have.

Authors Alison Pouliot and Tom May have combined their education and interest in fungi to publish ‘Wild Mushrooming – A Guide for Foragers’, with 320-pages of colour photographs and illustrations, along with scientific and cultural knowledge.

Ms Pouliot said with interest in foraging for wild food on the rise, learning to accurately identify fungi reduces both poisoning risk to humans and harm to the environment.

AUTHORS Alison Pouliot - is an ecologist and environmental photographer with a focus on fungi. Her recent book The Allure of Fungi poses fundamental questions about human-fungus liaisons.

Tom May - is a mycologist who has spent more than four decades getting to know Australian fungi. He has published widely on fungal taxonomy, ecology and conservation in scientific and popular literature, including checklists of Australian fungi and a key to genera of Australian mushrooms (FunKey). He is active in international mycological groups such as the Nomenclature Committee for Fungi and in community natural history organisations, founding Fungimap in 1995. He was awarded the Australian Natural History Medallion in 2014.

Powerline map sparks frustration

By Lachlan Ellis Energy company AusNet has released a new map and documents on its controversial Western Transmission Network Project (WVTNP) – but Council and affected landowners are sceptical.

On Wednesday 24 February, AusNet published a map of potential corridors for the project, having narrowed the areas of interest from previous plans.

The company said there would be “further community consultation and investigations” regarding the corridors, including community drop-in sessions to be announced this week.

It also said it would be forming three “Community Consultation Groups”, with members selected “based on merit, skills, expertise and evidence of connection to the community”.

An AusNet spokesperson told the Moorabool News the company would continue taking community feedback in planning the WVTNP. “We will continue to work closely with local communities as we work to further narrow these corridors. Everyone in the community can play a role in shaping this important project that’s why we urge members of the community to nominate themselves for our community consultation groups or head along to our drop-in sessions,” the spokesperson said.

“There is an interactive map of the corridors on the project website. Community members can zoom in on areas of interest to identify roads and streets. Undergrounding is being looked at as part of the EES (Environmental Effects Statement) process.”

AusNet was also asked why planned routes still go through farmland and environmentally sensitive areas, and if there would be mediation about the final decision – but these questions went unanswered.

Myrniong landowner and member of the Moorabool and Central Power Alliance (MCHPA), Nathan Lidgett, thinks the ‘new’ map isn’t very new at all.

“The northern route hasn’t changed at all from the original map that we pinpointed from the start, so realistically, no, not much has changed,” he said.

“It’s re-hashed. I don’t think they’ve taken anything that

people have said in their community drop-in sessions into consideration. It’s the same route they sent out in their original letters to potential landowners in the line of fire.

“The whole farm I’m living on is in that area. Our other lots are in the area too, it’s near enough to 60 to 70 per cent of our farm business,” Mr Lidgett said.

When asked what he thought of AusNet’s community consultation, and whether he thought the Community Consultation Groups would improve the community consultation process, Mr Lidgett laughed.

“It’d be hard not to improve, to be honest,” he joked.

“But if you read their terms of reference, I don’t know how it can work. I don’t know who’s going to be suitable to sit on those groups, having a meeting once a month between 9 and 5 on a weekday, which means people have to take time off work. And in the terms, you’re not allowed to talk to the media.

“And AusNet won’t pick up our calls,” Mr Lidgett said.

“I’ve left them two messages on their info phone line, we’ve been trying to get on to the Project Development Manager… he will not return calls.

“To release a map when they have five different consultancy teams working for them, and for them not to be able to pick up a telephone and talk to concerned landowners, is deplorable.”

A final corridor for the power lines is planned to be announced by mid-2021.

Moorabool Shire Council has remained steadfast in its preference for underground power lines, issuing a media release criticising AEMO’s [national energy regulators] investigation process.

Council CEO Derek Madden said there is understandably a lot of angst in the community about this project.

“Especially from landowners closest to the proposed route, and we will continue to advocate for these people and continue to push for an underground option to be considered,” he said.

Last year, Council commissioned an independent report into AEMO’s decision-making process, which found several issues.

The report stated that the Regulatory Investment Test for Transmission (RIT-T) done by AEMO “does not appear to consider costs or benefits outside the electricity market”, and “does not take into account any local, indirect or nonmarket impacts” such as impacts to the environment and people’s livelihoods.

“This is not acceptable. The impact to people must be taken into account when determining the best outcome.”

Mr Madden said.

Moorabool Mayor Tom Sullivan said Council was also concerned about the mental health effects posed by the ongoing issue of overhead lines.

“I know they’ll say it’s expensive to go underground, but you’ve got to look at the whole of life costs of something,” Cr Sullivan told the Moorabool News.

“The impact it has on people’s lives, that has a price too, surely. One thing that concerns Council is the angst it’s causing the community, and it may be affecting some people emotionally. We’re very concerned about that, it’s been going on for nearly 12 months to some extent.”

Cr Sullivan said some people have had that cloud hanging over them for all that time.

“And there’s an unknowing about it…they don’t know whether it is or it isn’t going ahead. So Council is concerned about the emotional wellbeing of people who may be affected as well. There’s a lot of things up in the air, and as a result, all Council can do is put the community’s views and the undergrounding option out.”

Death on Woolpack case continues

By Caitlin Bewley He’s been charged with manslaughter, entering a guilty plea, and now a date for sentencing will go through the rigors of the court.

The 31-year-old Pentland Hills man appeared via livestream from the Remand Centre in the Supreme Court last week for a post committal direction hearing.

Damian Janson was originally charged with murder before entering his plea in the Ballarat Magistrates’ court on February 11 (M/News Feb 16, 2021).

Judicial Registrar Tim Freeman discussed with the accused’s lawyer Nelson Brown, and Raelene Maxwell for the Crown,

dates for upcoming appearances with the earliest being this Friday 5 March, for a fixed plea hearing.

A purpose of arraingment will be sought where Janson will be formally read the criminal charge document.

The offending occurred on May 20 last year when motorcyclist, 24-year-old Jake Smith died at the scene after being struck and killed on Woolpack Road Maddingley, by a vehicle that Janson was alleged to be the driver of.

He then fled the scene on foot before presenting himself to police two days later.

Janson will remain on remand before appearing via WebEX livestream for the hearing this Friday.

What a load of rubbish

By Lachlan Ellis Illegal rubbish dumping has locals and environmental groups outraged, with Council working to come up with a solution.

Moorabool Environment Group (MEG) has prepared a presentation showing the extent of rubbish dumping at School Lane, Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road and other roads in the Parwan area.

MEG Treasurer David Marnie told the Moorabool News that the dumping has got out of control.

“Our concern isn’t only over the rubbish that’s been dumped at School Lane. It’s also over the fact that from the roundabout on the Parwan-Exford Road and the Geelong Road down to Cummings Road and the Parwan Creek…all these places have in effect become unregulated rubbish dumps,” Mr Marnie said.

“It’s become a scandalous and disgusting entry into Moorabool…if we talk about gateways, it’s a really bad entrance into the Shire. It’s full of vermin, rabbits, boxthorns…it’s not just School Lane, it’s the neighbouring properties too.

“It’s not to be critical of Council officers, I think the Planning and Compliance Officers are doing their best to address the issue on an ad hoc area. But we’re arguing that it’s important that it’s seen to be a systemic problem,” he said.

Mr Marnie said it needs to be dealt with by senior people from the EPA, DELWP and Council.

“When you allow one property to get away with it, it spreads to another property.”

Planning and Compliance Officers from Moorabool Shire Council have visited the properties in question, with Council CEO Derek Madden saying the dumping issue was being looked into.

“Council is aware of this issue and has been undertaking intensive investigation into the matter, that is still ongoing. We are working closely with the EPA and have consulted Council lawyers. We are looking at any legal options available to us.” Mr Madden said.

The EPA said it takes reports of illegal dumping seriously and is looking into dumping in the Bacchus Marsh area, after a number of reports were made.

“Environment Protection Authority Victoria (EPA) is investigating a number of reports of illegally dumped or stored waste on properties in the Maddingley South and Parwan areas,” EPA South West Regional Manager Carolyn Francis said.

“EPA has inspected several sites and taken samples of materials for testing. Alongside inspections on the ground, we use a range of other tools to complete our assessments, such as aerial imagery, drones and legal notices requiring information to be provided to us,” she said.

Tearing up the track

By Lachlan Ellis A local BMX club has had its track severely damaged by users tearing up the track – and not in the good way.

Bacchus Marsh BMX Club runs training nights and races at the Bacchus Marsh BMX Track at Bacchus Marsh Racecourse and Recreation Reserve.

Signage at the entrance to the track clearly states that the track is “for the use of bicycles only” and “remote control cars are prohibited” – but that hasn’t stopped rulebreakers from damaging the track with remoted control cars.

BMX Club President Les Stewart said the damage makes the track slippery and unsafe and, takes a huge amount of time and money to fix.

“The fast-spinning action of the wheels on remote control cars destabilises the track surface and turns it to a powderlike surface. Then the wind comes along and blows the surface away,” Mr Stewart told the Moorabool News.

“Then we have to fix it with rakes and shovels, we don’t have specialists doing it. It’s a safety issue too, it’s very slippery on top after remote control cars have been on the track. We have a lot of 3 and 4-year-olds, they slip right over on the downsides of the jumps.”

Mr Stewart said he wanted people to be aware of the rules at the track, and the repercussions to the BMX Club when those rules are broken.

“The word needs to get out, please, don’t bring remote control cars to our track. You’re causing us a lot of work, we’re having to cancel events, and it’s costing us a lot of money,” he said.

“This recent incident, we’ve got about 200 metres of track damage. We’re looking at about 10 to 15 hours of work to fix it…and at $60 a square metre, it’s very expensive to have it blowing away.

“With the current damage we’ve had to cancel our training sessions, we cancelled one on Thursday. Kids are missing out, parents are getting frustrated, our volunteers have had enough…there is clear signage there that says no remote control cars.”

The Bacchus Marsh BMX Track was officially opened by then Moorabool Mayor Cr David Edwards and Member for Melton Steve McGhie in November 2019, after nine years of discussions and a $9 million investment from Council and the State Government.

Unlike some other sporting facilities where their local Council may foot the bill, this is not the case when damage is incurred to the Bacchus Marsh BMX Track, it is the BMX Club that has pay and fix the damage.

“How about I put some holes in you” - threat

By Lachlan Ellis A Bacchus Marsh man chasing up money for a car he sold on Facebook Marketplace was threatened with serious injury by the buyer, the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates’ Court has heard.

Mert Konti appeared in court via livestream as Police Prosecutor Paul Thomas told Magistrate Tom Barrett the background.

“On the 1st of July 2020, the victim placed an ad on Facebook Marketplace to sell his 2013 Toyota Hilux. On the 2nd of July 2020, the accused sent the victim a message and arranged to see the vehicle in-person.” Mr Thomas said.

The court heard Mr Konti paid some, but not all, of the cost of the Hilux – when the victim tried to contact him to get the remainder, Mr Konti became violent.

“The victim tried to call the accused for information on the outstanding $1400…the accused messaged him ‘Stop being such a f***ing problem you little c***, how about I come over there and put some holes in you’,” Mr Thomas said.

Mr Konti admitted to threatening the victim in a statement read out to the court but said his bank had assured him the $1400 had already been transferred to the victim.

“I threatened him, but I wouldn’t have used those words, he threatened that he would go to my mum’s house. I knew the money had gone through; I saw the statement. I checked with the bank, and they said, ‘one hundred percent the money has gone through’.” the statement read.

Mr Konti entered a guilty plea to threatening to inflict serious injury and obtaining a financial advantage by deception.

“Originally I was planning on pleading not guilty, but I think it would be quicker if I plead guilty,” Mr Konti told the Magistrate.

“I’m a single dad, mum’s gone off the rails, so I’m stuck at home looking after my son every day,” he said.

Magistrate Barrett gave Mr Konti an aggregate fine of $3000 with convictions, plus a 3-month state of restitution to pay the victim his $1400.

An intervention order filed by the victim against Mr Konti was also extended by 12 months, with the Magistrate ordering Mr Konti not to breach it.

“You could be looking at two-years imprisonment and $29,000 in fines for infringing on the order.” Magistrate Barrett said.

Carts returned to club

A man in his 20s remains in custody following the alleged theft of three golf carts from a local golf club earlier this year.

On Saturday January 23, the three golf carts were stolen from the Bacchus Marsh West Golf Club (BMWGC) at around 3:20am.

It is alleged the unidentified perpetrators drove in the main entrance of the facility and ripped open the garage door of the storage shed with an unknown item (M/News Feb 2).

Detective Senior Constable Ben Murray told the Moorabool News “the suspects…cut a hole in the fence and proceeded to drive the carts down McCormacks Road, toward Oliver Way, which was caught on CCTV footage.”

A spokesperson for Moorabool CIU said the 27-year-old, has since been charged with the alleged offending, was remanded “a week or two ago” and remains in custody.

The carts were found at an address in Maddingley.

President of BMWGC Peter Clough said it was a “fantastic result” that the carts had been returned with little damage.

“The only damage was to the [cart’s] windscreens, but that’s not much at all,” Mr Clough said. “We’re just happy to have them back.”

The offender will appear in court at a future date.

The golf club is a volunteer run organisation and is located adjacent to the Racecourse Recreation Reserve on Bacchus Marsh-Balliang Road.

Crap proposal kicks up a stink

By Lachlan Ellis A proposal by EPA Victoria to reclassify animal manure as industrial waste has drawn the ire of State and Federal politicians.

In a discussion paper released this month, the EPA referred to manure “arising from commercial, industrial or trade activities” as “industrial waste for the purposes of the [Environment Protection] Act 2017”.

For more than 20 m3 of solid manure per month, anyone involved in the use of manure under the EPA recommendation would need to “acquit lawful place duties another way. In some circumstances, this may be acquitted through EPA permission conditions”.

In short, depositing, receiving, or transporting more than 20 m3 of manure would require paperwork and EPA approval.

“While the likelihood appears low, the potential consequences are significant if manure is not safely stored, stockpiled or deposited to land.

The main risks include biosecurity risk of disease outbreak…pollution of the environment, particularly waterways, from manure being washed into a river or stream with pathogens and potentially elevated levels of chemical contaminants and nutrients, and amenity impacts to neighbouring sites

if manures are applied to inappropriate sites or under poor weather conditions.” the EPA paper adds.

Federal Minister for Agriculture David Littleproud said the EPA’s recommendation was “madness”.

“This will tie farmers up in unnecessary green tape and has the potential to add to the costs of production of food and fibre that will be passed on to the consumer at the checkout,” Minister Littleproud said.

“Farmers have been recycling animal manure to improve the health of their soil for thousands of years. Now with this move, the Victorian Government could cost farmers hundreds of thousands of dollars if they fertilise their paddocks.”

Western Victoria MP Bev McArthur followed suit, calling the plan

“ridiculous” and a “nonsensical idea” in an address to the Victorian Parliament.

“This is classic Andrews Government over-regulation emanating from inside the tram tracks of Melbourne with no understanding of how the agriculture sector actually operates,” Mrs McArthur said.

“Manure is a valuable fertiliser for agriculture and has been used to improve soil and pasture productivity forever. This extraordinary regulation now expects farmers to participate in onerous bureaucracy, requiring paperwork completion for no justifiable reason.”

Mrs McArthur also said she found some irony in the proposed regulations around manure, while toxic soil was being considered for disposal at sites across Western Victoria, including at Maddingley Brown Coal.

“The great irony is of course that while on the one hand the EPA claims that they are broadening the definition of ‘industrial waste’ to prevent potential harm to human health and the environment, on the other they are facilitating the dumping of real toxic waste into waterways that will actually risk poisoning produce on farms around Bacchus Marsh.”

The EPA says it is still engaging in consultation with key stakeholders and industry operators, with consultation closing at 5 pm on March 4.

Making a buck from batteries

It’s not a raffle, they aren’t selling chocolates however, one local school is fundraising, but it is an unusual initiative.

Myrniong Primary School are collecting old and unused automotive batteries that incorporates focusing on recycling and sustainability.

A spokesperson for the school said the school’s fundraising committee thought there may be a few farmers in the area who have tractor and ride-on mower batteries lying around.

“This will be a way they can get rid of them and hopefully for us to make some money.

“We want to open this up to the community and we’re hoping there are lots of unwanted automotive batteries offered,” she said.

Monies raised will be used to possibly replacing/updating the modular furniture in the schools BER /Senior Buiding.

Old and unwanted batteries can be dropped off at the school between 8:30 -3.30pm Monday-Friday, but only for the rest of term, ending on 1 April, and the school office will need to be notified prior - 5368 7232.

Last year, just before Christmas, the students of Lal Lal Primary School undertook a project which explored the district of Lal Lal and the places and spaces that the students love to live near. The project was completed in conjunction with CFA and DELWP as part of the Community Based Bushfire Management Project being facilitated by Bridget Clarke (CFA) as part of the Safer Together Program.

“We wanted to get a picture of the area and its local assets from the community’s perspective,” said Ms Clarke, “and who better than the district’s young people to give us some great feedback on that.”

The brief, delivered online during lockdown, was to take a photo or draw a picture of a local place that they love and explain why it’s important to them.

“They became very engaged in the project and it delivered

some great results,” said Principal Siobhan Gosney.

Popular amongst the local listings was the Lal Lal Falls, the water tower, the primary school, train station and the pub.

Other mentions included forests, country roads and scenic lookouts.

Ms Clarke said the Community Based Bushfire Management program is one that encourages residents to plan for and provide local, innovative solutions to reduce local fire risks at a strategic level.

“Lal Lal is one of 21 communities in the State that has been selected to strategically address fire risk locally. This is more than managing an individual’s block,” she said.

“It is about getting together as a community to think of things that can be prioritised and done to empower and prepare the town in case of bushfire.”

Release the ninjas

Why build traditional play equipment at your primary school when you can build a Ninja Warrior course?

That’s exactly what Gordon Primary School’s junior committee asked when designing new play equipment for the senior schoolers.

However, they didn’t choose any ordinary play equipment, they decided on an obstacle course that resembles the hit television show, Australian Ninja Warrior, but to a much smaller scale.

The obstacle course, which Principal Russel Cowan said is likely to be named ‘Ninja Island’, came to fruition from a mixture of different school fundraisers, and bears a hefty price tag of over $50,000 to construct.

“The junior school council designed the play equipment and we had to engage with a contractor to make it safe The Ninja wall at Gordon Primary School is popular with for Australian standards,” he their students. Photo – Caitlin Bewley said.

“We needed to cut down an old tree in the play area so the kids in the council wanted to make use of that area – it’s stage one of quite a big project,” he said. “The next part of the project is to turn that tree into a pirate ship.”

The miniature Ninja Warrior course is made of six stations; stepping blocks, a blue A-frame, a cargo net, four climbing poles, monkey bars and then concludes on a warped wall.

Mr Cowan said when the playground was first built in mid-February, there were not many students who could get to the top of the wall.

“Only one person out of 140 kids could climb to the top of it in the beginning, now there’s a few kids who can get to the top,” he said.

“You can’t get them off the playground once they’re on there,” he said. “It’s been a hit.”

Public drunkenness causes spirited debate

A Bacchus Marsh man pleading guilty to the possession and use of methamphetamine, told a Magistrate he was struggling with the sorrow of his mother’s illness.

Peter Boumbis appeared at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates’ Court on 12 February, telling Magistrate Tim Walsh that his mother was unwell and in hospital at the time police caught him with ice.

“Mum was in hospital…that’s why I used at that time, I was visiting her,” Mr Boumbis said.

“I don’t use it anymore.”

Police Prosecutor Paul Thomas told the Magistrate that Mr Boumbis and a friend had been caught at a Bacchus Marsh service station.

“On the 18th November 2018 at about 12:15 am, a grey Holden Captiva wagon

was intercepted at a Bacchus Marsh service station. The accused appeared to be drugaffected. Senior Sergeant Gonzalez searched the vehicle, and a black case was located inside the accused’s jean jacket pocket.

A ziplock bag was found containing 0.3 grams of a substance police believed to be methamphetamine,” Mr Thomas said.

“The accused stated he ‘used ice to feel good and want to do things’. He stated that ‘he knows it isn’t a good thing and he obtained the ice out Altona way’.”

Mr Boumbis cooperated with police and admitted he had used methamphetamine the day before he was intercepted.

He told the Magistrate he had an otherwise clean record and suffered a work accident requiring a skin graft in 2012.

Magistrate Walsh put Mr Boumbis on a six-month good behaviour bond without a conviction.

Just because public drunkenness has been decriminalised in Victoria, it is not a reason to ‘get on the beers’*, as it is to be “treated as a health issue, not a crime” – but not everyone is convinced it’s the right move.

The Summary Offences Amendment (Decriminalisation of Public Drunkenness) Bill 2020 passed through the Victorian Parliament on Friday 19 February, with Aboriginal communities and health experts advocating for the reform for decades.

The decriminalisation of public drunkenness was recommended by the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody in 1991, with the Victorian Government acknowledging the death of an Aboriginal woman in custody four years ago as a turning point.

“The Bill builds on three decades of work and activism, including key recommendations from the Royal Commission into Aboriginal Deaths in Custody, and the Coronial Inquest into the tragic death of Tanya Day,” a Government media release read.

“These reforms were developed following extensive consultation to ensure they strike the right balance between protection of people who are intoxicated and community safety.”

Ms Day fell asleep on a V/Line service from Echuca to Melbourne in 2017 and was arrested and taken to Castlemaine Police Station.

While unattended in her cell, Ms Day fell and hit her head at least five times, sustaining traumatic brain injuries which ended her life weeks later. She was 55.

“It’s clear the current laws have had a profound and disproportionate impact on Aboriginal communities. These reforms will save lives and ensure those who need support have access to culturally appropriate care.” Minister for Aboriginal Affairs, Gabrielle Williams, said.

While the decriminalisation of public drunkenness may prevent deaths like Ms Day’s, the move does not have universal support.

Nationals Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, told the ABC he was concerned the reform could harm rural communities with less law enforcement resources.

“The Government is putting the cart before the horse,” Mr O’Brien said.

“I’m very concerned that the model won’t work for small rural areas where resources are limited and police are usually the only people available to help.”

Over the next two years, the Government says it will “continue to work closely with Aboriginal communities, health experts and key stakeholders – including Victoria Police – to design, trial and refine the public health model and develop local solutions that are safe and effective”.

By Helen Tatchell Outdoor table tennis tables in public parks may be coming to Moorabool.

A Notice of Motion was raised by East Ward Councillor, Tonia Dudzik at an Ordinary Meeting on 3 February, for Officers to prepare a report evaluating the benefits, options, cost, and possible sites suitable for installing outdoor table tennis tables.

The report is also to include potential funding sources available for this project.

Cr Dudzik said she visited the Kyneton Botanical Outdoor table tennis tables could be placed within Gardens in Macedon Ranges Moorabool.

Shire and was impressed with the fitness equipment available publicly in the park.

“This was being utilised by older adults. Installed in the park was an outdoor table tennis table for public use,” she told the meeting.

“Given that people are encouraged to exercise more outdoors following the COVID-19 pandemic, this is an option which should be considered. A major benefit of this type of exercise equipment is that it can be utilised by people of all ages.”

On speaking to U3A members of the Macedon Ranges Shire, Cr Dudzik said they explained to her during the COVID-19 pandemic, they were no longer permitted to exercise inside during the restrictions.

“As a result, an outdoor table tennis table was installed in the park and older adults and other residents were able to continue to exercise and meet socially while still following COVID-19 restrictions.”

Cr Dudzik said they continue to use it, “as the environment is so pleasant in the park.”

“I would recommend to Council that they investigate the option of installing outdoor table tennis tables at locations considered suitable in Moorabool Shire.”

No licence, no food

By Lachlan Ellis A speeding driver has pleaded for leniency from Magistrate Tom Barrett, after he was clocked travelling more than 20 km/h over the speed limit near Myrniong.

Emeka Okoli appeared on livestream at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court on 19 February, and said he intended to plead not guilty, before changing his mind when he was told that would require a hearing later in the year.

Police Prosecutor Paul Thomas told the Magistrate Mr Okoli had told police he was “dazed” at the time.

“On Tuesday 4 July 2020, the accused was observed by police driving a white Ford Territory westerly on the Western Freeway. Near Myrniong, the accused was observed driving at fast rate of speed estimated at 130 km/h. Checked by prescribed speed detector. During tracking history, the accused maintained 132 km/h in a 110 km/h zone. The accused was intercepted by police and issued a $330 fine and a three-month licence suspension,” Mr Thomas said.

“The accused told police ‘I knew I was speeding but I didn’t know what I was doing, I was dazed’.”

Mr Okoli told Magistrate Barrett he was speeding to get home and assist his pregnant

wife and pleaded for the licence suspension to be dropped.

“I am a disability worker. I live in Laverton and work in Ballarat. We moved to Australia from Qatar. On that day I called my wife, she was crying and told me she was bleeding and having pain. I lost my mind, that was at the peak of [COVID] restrictions,” Mr Okoli said.

“I was rushing home to help her with the baby and take her to the GP, that’s why I exceeded the speed limit…I’m very sorry, I never speed, but I was the only one who could help my wife. That was my first-time speeding, I travel on that road every day.”

Magistrate Barrett had no choice but to maintain the three-month suspension, as that is the minimum penalty for between 20 and 24 km/h over the speed limit in a 110 km/h zone.

The Magistrate struck out Mr Okoli’s $330 fine, but Okoli pleaded for the licence suspension to be struck out too.

“If my licence is suspended, I cannot feed my kids. One is seven-months old.” Mr Okoli said.

“This is a law made by Parliament, the threemonth suspension is mandatory, I have no discretion on that. But the $330 fine no longer exists.” the Magistrate replied.

In a quandary over drop-in sessions

By Lachlan Ellis Locals in the west of Moorabool Shire have expressed their frustrations towards Boral, criticising the company’s community engagement, as it plans works around its Dunnstown quarries.

It is alleged that Boral plans to close Howards Road and parts of Hewittsons Road, upgrade Kielys Road and Mangrees Road, and construct a new access road between Navigator-Dunnstown Road and Ditchfield Road.

The company hosted a community drop-in day last year on Monday December 21, from 8:30 am to 4:30 pm, to hear community feedback on the plans.

However, Dunnstown residents argue the session was held not only on a day when most people were working but was also poorly advertised.

“I only found out last minute…and it ran when most people were at work, so they couldn’t go anyway. If you were serious about it, you’d have it at a time of year when people could attend, and make it go into the night so more people could come,” local Dominic Hanrahan told the Moorabool News.

“Initially what was talked about was a lot smaller scale than what they’re doing now, they’ve really expanded the scope of what they’re doing without really letting on to the community what they’re about.

“To some degree, the community’s at loggerheads with Boral about what they’re up to. We understand that there has to be industry, but what we want to see from these groups is some serious contribution back to the community,” he said.

Mr Hanrahan posted a message from Boral on a community social media page to raise awareness of the event, and several Dunnstown residents said they were “surprised” and “annoyed” to be reading about it for the first time.

“We are on one of the roads that is proposed to be closed, and this is the first we have heard of it. Not very impressed with the quarry’s communication.” one Dunnstown resident said.

“We were not contacted either. No-one on our street knew about this.” another local added.

Boral’s Stakeholder Relations Manager, Anna Whybird, said the company “value your feedback on our proposed plan”, but Dominic Hanrahan reserves some scepticism.

“If you didn’t know better, you’d say they’d planned the session that way on purpose so people can’t go.” he said.

Boral Limited is a multinational company manufacturing and supplying building and construction materials. Founded in Australia, it also has extensive operations in the United States and Asia.

With revenue for total operations of A$5.86 billion, Boral has about 17,000 employees working across 17 countries at 672 operating sites and 154 distribution sites. Its headquarters are located in Sydney.

Drug user ‘rehabilitated’

By Lachlan Ellis A Bacchus Marsh man found with marijuana and GHB in his possession, and marijuana and methamphetamine in his system, has been described as “rehabilitated” by his lawyer.

The 23-year-old man was represented at the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates Court by Scott Belcher.

Mr Belcher told Magistrate Tom Barrett, his client Jacob Brennan had been to two weeks of rehabilitation and had not used drugs for almost three-months.

“He has no criminal history, and he lives with his parents. He’s been drug-free since the 25 November last year; he was submitted to a private rehabilitation facility.

He successfully completed that rehabilitation, he then engaged with counselling services.

I’m pleased to report he’s not attracted the attention of Victoria Police since.” Mr Belcher said.

Police Prosecutor Paul Thomas painted a different picture of Mr Brennan when he was intercepted in July last year.

“The accused was observed by police on 30 July 2020 at approximately 2:10 pm in a stationary vehicle in Fitzroy Street. A routine check was done by police, and police noticed a strong smell of marijuana in the car. The accused admitted marijuana was in the glove box.

The substance GHB was found hidden down the front of the accused’s pants, and 7.6 grams of marijuana was found in a sandwich bag in the glove box,” Mr Thomas said.

Mr Brennan admitted to using marijuana “every week” but said the GHB belonged to a friend, and he had only tried it once, six months earlier.

On another occasion, Mr Brennan was intercepted by police and methamphetamine and THC (a component of marijuana) were detected via an oral fluid test.

With no prior offences, Magistrate Barrett issued Mr Brennan to a 12-month good behaviour bond, a $300 contribution to the court fund, a six-month licence suspension and a $500 fine.

Letters to the Editor Speeding has consequences

By Lachlan Ellis Driving at 30 km/h over the limit will see a man spend 3-months off the road, after also copping a $300 fine for his efforts.

Mitchell Cowell appeared before Magistrate Tim Walsh in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates’ court, accused of driving at a top speed of 130 km/h on Friend in Hand Road, west of Geelong.

Police prosecutor Paul Thomas told the court on Friday 12 February that Mr Cowell admitted he had no excuse for exceeding the speed limit.

“On 20 April 2020, the accused was observed driving a white Ford ute in Stonehaven at an estimated 130 km/h, heading southbound on Friend in Hand Rd, between FyansfordGheringhap Road and the Hamilton Highway. The accused maintained a speed of 130 km/h and was issued with an infringement notice with a fine of $454 and

did not provide any reason for speeding.” Mr Thomas said.

In a letter submitted to the court, Mr Cowell said his greatest concern about the charge was losing his licence.

Cowell entered a guilty plea, with the Magistrate saying that despite a licence suspension putting pressure on Mr Cowell’s employment status, he had no choice.

“I understand it’s going to be difficult for you, but that’s the legislation. Is it likely you will lose your job?” the Magistrate asked.

“There’s a chance I might keep my job, but I wouldn’t put money on it.” Mr Cowell replied.

“The Road Safety Act tells me that I must suspend your licence for a period of 3-months. I have no say in that whatsoever,” Magistrate Walsh said.

“Imprisonment would be a definite possibility if you were caught driving while suspended,” he said.

Traffic lights to be installed Although Ms Santos said she believes the traffic lights may cause congestion, she said it will “make the intersection safer for pedestrians.”

By Caitlin Bewley Traffic lights are set to replace a roundabout at a busy Bacchus Marsh intersection after community consultation identified the road to be dangerous.

The existing single lane roundabout at the Main Street-Grant Street-Gisborne Road intersection will be replaced with traffic lights, along with additional lanes at the approaches to the intersection.

It is believed the installation of traffic lights will reduce congestion at the intersection and decrease travel times.

Department of Transport’s Regional Director for the Grampians, Michael Bailey said replacing the existing Grant Street-Main Street roundabout with traffic lights will improve the flow of traffic.

“It is not just the improved flow the traffic lights will make through the Bacchus Marsh CBD, but it will also make it safer for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.”

It has not been stated if the on-street parking places along Grant Street will still exist with the changes.

“We’re currently finalising detailed designs …… and look forward to sharing them with the Bacchus Marsh community soon,” Mr Bailey said.

Regional Roads Victoria (RRV) undertook consultation with the Bacchus Marsh community, businesses, and Moorabool Shire Council regrading the project, and are currently exploring a number of design options.

“There’s a lot of kids and elderly people who cross the road here and often have to scoot very quickly through, so from that perspective, I think it will be much safer,” she said.

General Manager of Community Assets and Infrastructure for the Shire, Phil Jeffrey, said Moorabool Council advocated for improved traffic conditions in Bacchus Marsh for many years.

“The intersection at Grant Street-Main StreetGisborne Road has experienced congestion for long periods and capacity improvements and pedestrian safety improvements at the intersection are supported.

During the consultation in 2018, RRV received feedback that the intersection was dangerous, and the proposed improvements were supported.

RRV is currently finalising designs for this project with these to be shared with the Bacchus Marsh community in the near future.

The Victorian Government has invested $4.4 million into this project through the $63 million School and Community Safety Program as part of the most recent State Budget.

Send your letters to news@themooraboolnews.com.au Dear Editor, Manure Proposal a Load of Bull In Parliament this week I described the Environmental Protection Authority’s plan to reclassify animal manure as industrial waste as “ridiculous” and a “nonsensical idea” in Parliament last week.

A recent EPA determinations paper has revealed that the government intends on redefining animal manure as industrial waste and demanding that anyone who deposits, transports, or receives more than 20 cubic metres of manure on their property must complete a declaration of use document. That document must then be supplied to anyone else involved in the transport of manure.

This is classic Andrews government overregulation emanating from inside the tram tracks of Melbourne with no understanding of how the agriculture sector actually operates.

Manure is a valuable fertiliser for agriculture and has been used to improve soil and pasture productivity forever. This extraordinary regulation now expects farmers to participate in onerous bureaucracy, requiring paperwork completion for no justifiable reason.”

On top of that, the reclassification means that farmers could be subjected to significant penalties if manure inadvertently falls into a waterway.

Manure has reportedly been used as a fertiliser on farms since ancient Babylon and probably before, but now, only now, do bureaucrats in Victoria Street Carlton (EPA Head Office) seem to see it as a grave danger.

I call on the Minister for Environment to ensure that the EPA ditches this nonsensical idea and ceases placing more rules and regulations on farmers during this very difficult economic time.

It’s time for this Government to support farmers not treat them like criminals by imposing ill-thought-through rules and penalties on their productive operations and farm practices.

I compare the proposal to the EPA’s assistance of the Government to dispose of toxic soil in Maddingley Brown Coal, through which the Parwan Creek flows.

The great irony is of course that while on the one hand the EPA claims that they are broadening the definition of ‘industrial waste’ to prevent potential harm to human health and the environment, on the other they are facilitating the dumping of real toxic waste into waterways that will actually risk poisoning produce on farms around Bacchus Marsh.

Bev McArthur MP Member for Western Victoria Dear Editor, I read Jim Phasey’s letter (M/News 9 Feb) with disgust. I have watched the debate regarding the proposed Western Victorian Transmission Network Project (WVTNP) with dismay at the lies told by the anti-lobby so far and not intervened. But Jim’s letter went too far.

To compare the impacts of COVID 19 to this project is not only unfounded it is offensive.

To date there have been 909 deaths in Australia, and over 2.4 million worldwide.

How many deaths does Jim think the WVTNP will cause? The level of disrespect to those who have lost loved ones to this terrible pandemic appals me.

Similarly claims have been made that these

transmission lines are a fire hazard. But there has never been a bushfire caused by a transmission line. The Ash Wednesday fires and the Black Saturday were caused by low voltage power line failures. Again, the disrespect to those who suffered loss in these horrific fires is unthinkable.

They state that the completed project will disrupt farming uses of the land around the towers. Yet I know of several farmers who currently have existing towers installed on their lands and seem to have no problems using the land surrounding these, even though they have prominently displayed “NO Towers” signs on their fences. More deception.

At the start of their disinformation campaign those involved tried to blame Dan Andrews, with prolific numbers of signs damning “Dans Towers”! Lies again. The project was commissioned by the Australian Energy Management Organisation (AEMO), a Federally constituted body. The project was tendered and Austnet won, contracts awarded by….. yes you guessed it, AEMO. Nothing to do with the Vic state government.

This is a shameless political campaign that has stooped to depths not normally seen.

Shame on you Jim. Disgusting.

Ross Redwin Korweinguboora Dear Editor, The mother of all debates The Australian National University’s Gender Institute has recently released ‘gender-neutral’ language guidelines for staff and students in teaching.

It urges for terms such as breast feeding to be called ‘chest feeding’, and ‘birthing’ and ‘non birthing’ parents to replace the words ‘mother’ and ‘father’.

Such methods - which proclaim to achieve gender equality - are unnecessary and undesirable.

In the name of inclusivity, it is hugely alienating. It obviously risks devaluing women.

More insidiously, it implies that those who do not adapt and adopt the convention are arrogant, uncaring and deliberately hostile.

I applaud the intentions. We should always be caring and considerate – ‘do to others as you would be done by’ should be the mantra.

But the idea that changing the language in this way is caring, is fundamentally misguided.

The effort is no doubt aimed at including trans-masculine parents.

I believe we can show inclusivity and understanding without making a mockery of the language – or devaluing men or women in the process.

The pursuit of gender-neutral language is divisive and potentially offensive to the bulk of people who relate as a man or woman and cherish being a father or mother.

Projecting one’s own inference of genderneutrality on someone potentially condemns that person unfairly as an uncaring person.

I hope we can refer to mums and dads, breastmilk and breastfeeding for a long time yet.

The core needs of the child and the support of parents – of whatever makeup – is the most important issue, not the semantics and contortion of language.

The 6-part webinar series is part of the AAMI Virtual Community Camp Program, and each session will feature a panel of three AFL coaches, with different coaching topics to discuss.

The first webinar took place on Monday 1 March, with Brisbane coach Chris Fagan, North Melbourne coach David Noble and Sydney coach John Longmire joining host Paul Kennedy to discuss ‘Creating a Vision & Defining Your Purpose’.

The next webinar will be held at 7pm tonight, on the topic of ‘Building Strong Relationships’. Upcoming sessions will be held on Wednesday March 3, Tuesday March 9 and Thursday March 11 at 7 pm, and Monday March 8 at 10 pm.

Shannon Closter is Junior Football Director at the Darley Football Netball Club, and says the opportunity is one that footy coaches shouldn’t pass up.

“One hundred percent, I’d recommend any local footy coach to register. I think it’s a fantastic tool, you don’t get the privilege to talk one-on-one to AFL coaches. For them to put something like this on, for us as a club to be able to discuss the issues these coaches

will talk about and how they reflect upon our club, how they manage issues in the AFL…it’s fantastic,” Mr Closter said.

“To be able to listen to the insights of what happens in the inner sanctum of the AFL football clubs and, get some of their knowledge they’ve developed over the years going through the system, gives coaches of local teams like ours the tools to pass down to kids as they develop.

“We’re in a very important position in our role in developing a child. What we do is very important to how that child develops, so to get expert advice from coaches at the highest level of Aussie rules football is an incredible opportunity.

“Hearing about their experiences, we can apply what they’ve learned to our club.”

A diseased tree originally planted by Ballan District Health & Care (BDHC), has unfortunately had to be removed.

The canopy shade tree was removed by an arborist on February 10, as in its poor state it posed a safety hazard.

BDHC posted photos of the tree on their social media page before it was cut down.

“Our beautiful Japanese maple tree – located on the corner of Inglis and Cowie Streets – is very sick and needs to be removed. We had an arborist onsite yesterday, making the area

safe for patients and pedestrians to walk past the tree, and today we anticipate the tree will be removed completely,” BDHC wrote on February 11.

By the time of writing three hours later, the Japanese maple had been fully removed.

“It is truly unfortunate that the tree must go, as it is a beautiful addition to our grounds, but the situation cannot be avoided,” BDHC posted.

“We plan to plant another tree in its place as soon as practicable.”

Bacchus Marsh U3A (University of the Third Age) is a volunteer run Community Service and is now welcoming enrolments for their 2021 program of activities for local active retirees and Seniors.

Interested participants attended the annual ‘Meet and Greet’ introductory session with free morning tea at the Public Hall Supper Room in early February. Team leaders described a wide variety of activities which include Book Clubs, twice monthly Coffee and Chat, Discussion Group, French, Games, Gardening Group, Science and Maths, Mah Jong, Quilting, Painting for fun, Shakespeare and English Litrature, Tai Chi, Walking Slowly and Singalong.

By Caitlin Bewley A local volunteer organisation found an image in their archives that shows a woman on a bicycle, but the question remains, who was the woman?

The Bacchus Marsh and District Historical Society (BMDHS) are seeking information on a photo portraying a woman wearing a dress and hat riding a bicycle past a two-storey building.

BMDHS Secretary, Barb McMillan, said the building pictured was the Border Inn (now Flanagans) and was taken around 1900.

“The photo was taken outside the Border and I believe the person who took the photo would have been standing near, what is now, Arbee Real Estate near Gell Street,” Ms McMillan said.

No feedback has been provided on who the woman in question was, and BMDHS are urging anyone with any information to get in contact via enquiries@bmdhs.org.au.

Be careless and you may be carless

By Caitlin Bewley The campaign may have been launched last November; however, police say people still need to be mindful when it comes to car safety.

‘Being Careless Could Make You Carless’ is part of a Victoria Police and Crime Stoppers initiative and aims to bring attention to the ever-growing issue of theft from motor vehicles. It also urges people to be ‘car-smart’ when locking their cars and removing valuables from their vehicle.

Data from the Crime Statistics Agency show criminal incidences in Moorabool have increased by 6.3 per cent since 2019.

These statistics show the top five suburbs in Moorabool where criminal incidents occur are Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Maddingley, Ballan and Gordon.

Of the 1,714 incidents which occurred in the last 12-months, 172 of those were theft from a motor vehicle.

Stella Smith says it’s important to make sure your car is locked and safe at all times.

“If you leave your vehicle unlocked or leave any personal items in the front or backseat, you may as well be offering criminals a free ride and a shopping trip,” she said.

“It sounds like common sense but at Crime Stoppers we see hundreds of instances each year where people have overlooked the basics.

“If you leave your car keys near the front door, it makes your car an easy target for thieves. If you leave your car unlocked anything inside is an easy target,” she said.

“While some people only consider the cost of the vehicle itself, if you leave personal items in the car like your phone, ID, wallet or housekeys, these additional expenses can be costly and sometimes, irreplaceable.”

A different outdoor dining experience

By Caitlin Bewley A different type of outside dining is coming to Moorabool, but it is not on the pavement.

Kerbside dining, or Parklets, may be popping up across the shire as Council seek interested food outlets to be part of a trial.

The Parklets will be located adjacent, or in proximity to a business or venue and will occupy one parking space, preferably where kerbside parking is permitted.

Council’s Senior Economic Development Officer, Tina Seirlis, said the pop up Parklets seek to increase the amount of seating available for outdoor dining during the COVIDSafe period, and encourage locals and visitors to the town centres.

“There has been mutual interest in Parklets from within the business community and also by Council, as an opportunity to further support hospitality businesses recover,” Ms Seirlis said.

“We will observe the trial with interest, and with a view to considering what could be possible in future.”

Approved applicants will have a temporary Parklet installed outside their business up until June 30, 2021, free of charge.

Entries will be assessed by Council in consideration of the application criteria, a road safety audit and site assessment, and other variables as required to necessitate swift installation and a safe trial.

There are no fees for the businesses who receive a Parklet however, there is an agreement that successful applicants need to sign which includes an agreement on use, maintenance, and duration of installation.

Successful applicants will need to comply with strict requirements, including current Certificate of Currency insurance documentation.

Expressions of interest are now open to local hospitality venues who are interested in obtaining outdoor Parklets to accommodate patrons in a COVIDSafe way.

BacchChat had to move online last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but this month’s meeting will take place in-person at the Lerderderg Library in Bacchus Marsh.

Ballan’s Tor Roxburgh will chat with attendees from 10am to 12pm on Saturday 13 March, on the topic ‘Making Meaning & Starting Conversations: using creative tools to write about the COVID-19 experience’.

Ms Roxburgh is no stranger to reflective writing, having published two guided journals on reflective writing during and after the height of the pandemic.

The two-hour session will give participants the opportunity to reflect on life during the COVID-19 pandemic and discuss their hopes for the road ahead.

A twilight meet was held on Friday evening with a good number of athletes in attendance. All athletes participated in 4 events for the evening. Abbie Wilson, Ava Westerlaken and Marvel Pickett all recorded Personal Best results in their allocated 4 events.

Over the weekend 22 BMLAC athletes represented the Centre at the 2021 Western Metro Region Track & Field Carnival at Newport Athletics Track, Williamstown.

Bacchus Marsh athletes excelled claiming 20 Gold, 12 Silver and 3 Bronze Medals. Harrison Lovett, in his first time at Regional level, dominated in all four events claiming Gold medals in the 70 metres, 100 metres, 200 metres and High Jump. Centre Captain, Tamara Henry also was exceptional, winning Gold in the High Jump, Long Jump, Triple Jump and 100 metres. Nelson Banigo continues his success on the track, winning the 100 metres and 200 metres. Mitchell Gardiner sored over 1.73 metres in the Under 15 High Jump to claim victory, while he dipped on the finish line to take the win in the 100 metres. Nicholas Ide and Nicholas Mai were exceptional over the 80 metre hurdles, both claiming wins in their age groups. In the throwing events, Caitlin Mai took the win in the Under 16 Shot Put while Sergio Arrivillaga also finished first in the Under 14 Shot Put. Bridie Shanahan won Gold in the Javelin and Discus Under 15 events. Evie Ducas recorded a PB jump of 1.48 metres in the High Jump to take the title as did Hayden Lloyd in the Under 16 Triple Jump.

After winning their events all these athletes have now automatically qualified for the State Championships to be held on March 13 & 14 at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park.

Little Athletics Victoria will announce further progressions next week.

This week, competition will return to Saturday morning at Masons Lane Reserve with program 2 being conducted.

Ballan Bowling Club Results – Week ending Saturday 27 February With only two weeks to go before the finals start it was an important round for both Ballan teams.

Division 3 went down the highway to play close ally in Bacchus Marsh. The game was really close all day with no team able to break away until the last few ends, where Bacchus Marsh held on to win by 2 shots. Ballan did win 2 rinks which should keep them in the finals race.

Best rink - C. Love, G. Heverin (up from Div 7), D. Myers and the skip was G. Candy Division 7 unfortunately received a walkover from their opponent in Webbcona, who were unable to field a team.

With the green at Ballan being able to be used for practice, most of the Division 7 players and a few extras, were able to have a game between themselves.

The opposition then played carefree cricket and smashed our bowlers around the park.

Ballan didn’t adjust their length when bowling and dropped a few catches, however they continued to try their best and support each other with Mabel Ayres inspiring the team with her fearless fielding.

Once the batting innings commenced, Ballan batted beautifully with Noah Pace and Beth Davenport combining well to get the team off to a nice start. Kayden Heafield and Clover McIlwaine then added valuable runs and both retired not out. The team could not quite maintain the required run rate to win the match however they made the opposition work hard for the win valuing their wicket.

They started a little flat in the field but captains Ned Loft and Jack Jarvis pushed the team to maintain standards and encourage each other. The team collectively bowled well on a narrow pitch with five different

wicket takers, supported by Eli Muir working tirelessly in the field.

Once the batting innings commenced, openers Aussie McIlwaine and Jack Jarvis, came to the crease focused and determined to get the team off to a good start which they both did retiring on 50 and 51 respectively. Ethan Boland then continued to add to the team score with well-timed powerful hitting being supported by Ned Loft working the ball around and turning over the strike.

The game continues next week.

Under 17 2nd XI v Coronet City On the first day of a two-day match at Ballan, the home side won the toss and elected to bat, which turned out to be a great decision with Daniel Pascoe opening the batting with George Muir.

George lost his wicket early being caught on 2 runs after facing 8 balls with the score on 25. Ryan Lister then came to the crease and got into supporting Daniel with a good partnership of 83 before Ryan was bowled for 28.

Next to support Daniel was Kobe Heafield (28) and they both got to work with an even larger third wicket partnership of 90 runs. During this partnership Daniel Pascoe scored his maiden century and had to compulsorily retire once he reached the milestone. Daniel’s previous best score was 86, just before Christmas with the Senior 4th XI. Daniel’s scoring included 11 4s and four 6s.

Ballan ended on 229 after 46.2 overs.

Ballan 2nd Grade v Wendouree This match was a solid victory for Ballan.

Wendouree won the toss and batted losing their first wicket to Lachie Snaith after only 5 runs. The next pair steadied putting 42 runs on the board before Sam Dehnert caught the batsman in front of the wickets for LBW. Again, the Wendouree batsmen seemed to settle until Ben Loughnane came on to bowl his spinners and picked up 2 quick wickets with the score on 78. Three runs later Ben picked up a third wicket to finish on 3/25. Wendouree’s run rate ended up at 3.5 per over finishing at 6/156 (cc) after their 45 overs.

Opening the batting for Ballan were Jack McGregor and Lachie Snaith. Jack started off aggressively from the first over letting the bowlers know he meant business. Jack and Lachie put on 86 for the first wicket with Jack getting bowled on 51.

Lachie then stood up and took on the aggressive role that Jack was playing, with his brother and Captain, Michael Snaith. After putting together 66 runs between them Lachie scored 54 before being bowled.

Michael and Mark Kennedy cruised along to pass Wendouree’s score with only 3 wickets down after 24.4 overs. Ballan’s run rate was 6.4 per over, much higher than the required rate of 3.5.

Ballan’s tight fielding along with excellent bowling, not letting Wendouree get off to a good start, was the key to a good win.

Daniel Pascoe scored his first ever century against Coronet City in the U17s.

Jack Jarvis opened the batting with Aussie McIlwaine retiring on 51 and 50 respectively.

Sleepee wakes up for Group 1 glory

By Tim O’Connor Husband and wife Chris and Alison Alford combined for a memorable Group 1 victory on a special Saturday night at Tabcorp Park Melton.

The pair teamed up with talented mare Sleepee for a dominant win in the Lyn McPherson Memorial Breed For Speed Gold Series Final, with the four-year-old leading all the way to claim her second success at the elite level.

The champion reinsman had no trouble finding the front from barrier two and controlled the race before ripping home in a final quarter of 27.8sec to win by 6m over runner-up Alderbaran Crescent.

The mare, who is trained by Alison at the pair’s Bolinda property, has now won 11 of 22 career starts for more than $150,000 in prizemoney.

Chris Alford said it was a pretty easy display from the daughter of Dejarmbro, who is now back racing in top form after a significant injury early in her career.

“She missed about 18 months racing with a torn tendon behind her knee and she never really went out of work. She just stayed in with a bit of rehab for all that time,” he said.

“To hold her form and to be back racing well is a great effort from everyone at home.

“She had it pretty easy tonight, but she has got a real high cruising speed and she was doing it so easy tonight...”

It took some Chris Alford magic and a little bit of luck to get Queen Elida home in the Group 1 IRT Australia Need For Speed Princess Final earlier in the evening.

Alford got buried three back the pegs on the Brent Lilleytrained filly and ran into dead ends when he tried to extricate into the clear, but eventually found the gaps and finished powerfully to win by 2m on the line.

A galloping Ima Cherished Stride presented a run back along the sprint lane and the daughter of Love You did the rest, rocketing home to win over Lady In The Sky (Amanda

Grieve, Brad Williamson) and Banglez (Emma Stewart, Kate Gath).

The Group 1 win came at the former New Zealander’s seventh run here in Australia.

“When she had her first run here she just didn’t know what she was doing and gradually got better,” Alford said.

“Now she gets up on the bit and knows what racing is all about. She had to go from three wide, nearly four wide, turn five carts inwards and go to the sprint lane and flat pump.

She handled that well and only nice ones can do that.”

Trainers Anthony Butt and Sonya Smith combined to get Wolf Stride into the Miracle Mile with victory at Tabcorp Park Menangle and then just minutes later watched on as stablemate Have No Fear took out the Group 1 Alan Mance Need For Speed Prince Final at Melton.

Zac Phillips, who has been helping run the Butt/Smith stable while they are interstate, produced a clever front-running drive to beat the well-fancied odds-on favourite Kyvalley Hotspur (Brent Lilley, Chris Alford) by 9m, with My Used To Be (Lisa Miles) more than 30m back in third.

“Great effort by this horse and the whole team at home,” Phillips said.

“I can’t take credit for this one. Brad Chisholm, Amanda Grieve and the whole team out there - I really can’t single out anybody. There’s five or six of us and a lot of them have put a lot of hours in while Ants and Sonya have been away. So this win is more about them than me, that’s for sure.”

Have No Fear, a gelding by Father Patrick, is also a former Kiwi who has now won five of his nine starts.

Big loss to ladder leaders Darley Cricket Club

By Todd Whelan Reigning Premiers Darley have only themselves to blame for Saturday’s 46 run loss to ladder leaders Wendouree at Darley Park.

The Lions inability to deliver on the mere fundamentals of the game proved the catalyst of their demise. Five dropped catches in the field, four run outs with the bat and three ducks from the Lions top order is enough evidence to support the fundamental failure theory. If that wasn’t enough to convince, add 20 runs of missed fields and a handling of the ball dismissal into the package, all you would need is some Benny Hill back-up music to make it truly comical.

Nonetheless, Lions coach Brian Wheelahan while disappointed, maintained a glass half full approach to his players in the aftermath.

“You won’t see that again from our group,” he said.

“We’re a proud bunch, and we move on.

“If we take our chances, we’re chasing 50 runs less and reduce the pressure on our batsmen to score quickly in the process.”

In front of a growing interest of onlookers the Lions lost the toss and were sent into the field aiming for quick wickets - essentially the visitors opening with gun batsmen Sam Miller (932 runs @ 77.67 avg) and Cole Roscholler (707 runs @ 50.5 avg). The Lions bowling group bowled well for the most part and made it difficult for their run hungry opposition to dictate terms. Rahmatullah Khwaja dismissed Miller (29) to keep the lid on a momentum swing as the attention focus BACCHUS MARSH honed on the removal of Roscholler. Unfortunately for the Lions this is when the unravelling began. Roscholler was dropped on 26, 58 and 73 before he was finally dismissed for 82, the game now favouring the visitors on 3/147. The honours for the remaining ten overs were split as the Lions took a further three wickets for 50 runs ending the innings on 6/200. The Lions bowling group should be proud of their exploits despite conceding 200 given the lack of back-up support in the field.

The asking rate of 4.01 runs per over in reply was considered every bit gettable given the Lions even spread of runs in recent times, not solely dependent on leading run scorer Danza Hyatt (591 runs @ 42.21 avg). But a lot would have to go

right, beginning at the top. Well that certainly didn’t happen.

Dashing opener Anthony Taylor (0) was caught behind in the first over slashing outside the off stump - 1/0 already.

Hyatt looked in great touch muscling his way to 25 after the dismissal of captain Brad Barnes (0) who was well caught at second slip. The former West Indian international fell shortly after though in the most unusual of circumstances, out handling the ball. The unlikely dismissal and its impact (while clearly out) was heightened given the importance of Hyatt and the situation of the game. According to Wheelahan and Barnes they too would have been enthusiastic with an appeal given the roles were reversed. They both agreed Hyatt was clearly out, just comprehending the rare nature of it, was difficult to digest.

“It’s clearly a law of the game,” Wheelahan said.

“The correct decision was made, simple.”

When Khwaja (0) became the fourth wicket to fall on 37, the target was beginning to feel like 300.
