Mane event at Yaloak By Lachlan Ellis
The Ballarat Cup is on this Sunday (Feb 14), just out of Ballan, and it promises six hours packed full of galloping good fun for the whole family. The event has been organised by Yaloak Polo Club, part of Yaloak Estate, and will include high speed polo, celebrity exhibition matches featuring local racehorse trainers and jockeys, running races, and kids’ activities. Gates open at 11am, with the day coming to a close at 5pm. Yaloak Polo Club Committee member Alastair Cochrane said the club was excited to hold the event again this year, with the announced events only the beginning. “We’ll have three games of polo with local and international players playing, culminating in the Ballarat Cup match. In addition, there will be a game played between three teams of celebrities, being local trainers and jockeys from the Australian racing industry…there will also be kids’ activities such as donkey rides, a race between a motorbike, a car and a horse, a jumping castle for the kids, and fashions on the field,” Mr Cochrane told the Moorabool News. “It’ll be an exciting day of polo for people who don’t usually get to see the sport. It’s the oldest team sport in the world, played at a high pace…and there’ll be some great horses on display.” Mr Cochrane said the polo club was proud to be able to re-home retired racehorses and give them a new purpose following their racing careers. “The most important thing about polo is the horses, they are integral to the sport. We are very fortunate to be supported by Racing Victoria’s Off The Track program. It helps re-home racehorses that have finished their career, quite a lot of the horses playing on the day will be re-trained thoroughbred horses.” he said. “Bring a picnic lunch and a chair or there will be refreshments available to purchase.” The event will be at the Yaloak Polo Club at 4485 GeelongBallan Road, Fiskville. General admission is just $20 per person, with catered marquees also available. For more information and to buy your tickets, visit Yaloak Polo Club on Facebook or call Alastair on 0408 140 756. Tickets will also be available at the gate and COVID compliance will be in place.
