The reindeer were a bit tired, so one Bacchus Marsh man decided to ramp up the horsepower and deliver Christmas cheer on his motorbike. Gary Hamilton, dressed as Father Christmas, has been riding his Honda Gold Wing 1500cc, complete with trailer, around the streets of the town for around threeyears, complemented with coloured lights. “I just ride around the streets on the warmer days and

nights, sometimes three-days a week in the lead up to Christmas,” he told the Moorabool News. “The purpose is to bring a bit of cheer to the community, for the kids and the adults. I don’t give out presents or lollies, just myself, the bike and the lights.” Growing up, Mr Hamilton said he liked Christmas and now he has the opportunity to provide that excitement to his community. “I stop for kids and the parents take photos. Everyone waves,” he said.

“People just stop what they are doing and just look and smile. The kids’ faces are priceless.” Living in Bacchus Marsh for the last sixteen years, Mr Hamilton uses the bike and trailer to deliver presents to his 14-grand-children in Melton. “I usually do that on Christmas eve. ‘Tis the season, for fire By Caitlin Bewley Are you fire ready? Another fire season has approached, and the Country Fire Authority (CFA) is urging people to have their fire plans in place. The Fire Danger Period (FDP) for Moorabool also commenced from Monday December 14, and reports have shown an increased risk of grass fires. This year’s Seasonal Bushfire Outlook for Victoria showed the state is likely to experience a less severe bushfire season this summer compared to last, but that doesn’t mean communities should become complacent. Treasurer of Coimadai CFA James Ross said one of the major concerns is some community members show blatant disregard for the fire restrictions. “Some people tend to overlook or ignore the fire restrictions, and there are concerns about people who live in fire prone areas not taking heed of what the CFA is saying and preparing for the season. “There are people who are doing it, which is great, but there are some people who still are not,” Mr Ross said. “My biggest concern is that people in high-risk areas aren’t sticking to the fire restrictions,” he said. “We often see people that think it’s okay, but it’s not. “All they need to do is leave a small pile of rubbish burning overnight and all it takes is for the wind to pick up and a warmer than expected day, then there’s a recipe for disaster.” The Moorabool News asked Mr Ross if there could be an increased risk of grass fires within the Shire this bushfire season. He said because of this year’s wetter weather conditions, creating a lot more undergrowth, it is a possibility on high temperature, high risk days. “I highly suggest as part of people’s preparations, particularly for those who live in rural areas, to do fire breaks within their paddocks or around their homes. “Get all the information you can, have a fire plan ready, and practice your fire plan with your families,” he said. “Make sure everyone in your house knows your fire plan, stay or go, be prepared to make that decision,” Mr Ross said. It is a bird, and sort of a plane but, it is not Superman. The new arrival being housed at the Bacchus Marsh Aerodrome is the Kestrel Firebombing aircraft. The Geelong Gliding Club is located at the aerodrome and is hosting the specialist helicopter and the crew this fire season. President Steve McAvoy said the Bacchus Marsh airfield is an “important facility for the community, especially in the current climatic environment.” “Providing a large water bombing capacity that can be in the air within minutes will help protect our community,” he said. Kestrel Aviation, one of Australia’s leading specialist helicopter firefighting companies, will fly out from the clubs land, adjacent to the local Airfield, and use the gliding clubhouse facilities as their operations headquarters. The twin engine Bell 412 fire-fighting helicopter has been providing firefighting services to state and federal agencies for the last 27-years. The aircraft is able to carry 1,500 litres of water that will be used for precision aerial fire-bombing in the local region and is able to be deployed within minutes from Bacchus Marsh. Mr McAvoy said the Gliding Club have hosted the water bomber and its crew for several years and “are proud that they can make this vital contribution to the community.”

Vandals target Christmas tree

The grinches have struck in Bacchus Marsh, a week out from Christmas. The newly erected Moorabool Shire Council Christmas tree at the Village Green was damaged last week, after vandals broke a few of the decorations. A Council spokesperson said, “these will now need replacing”. The star atop the tree was also askew and it is alleged someone either attempted to tip the tree over or threw heavy objects at the tree and star. “They also tried to tear out fibres from the red presents,” the spokesperson told the Moorabool News. Christmas is looking a bit more joyful for a young Bacchus Marsh boy as his fight with Cancer improves, and a wish came true. Five-year-old Hunter Murphy was diagnosed with Leukemia in 2019 after a month of illness that progressively worsened without recovery. After numerous doctor’s appointments and hospital trips, Hunter was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital where his blood haemoglobin levels were at 21 and should have been at around 150. “His body was very close to shutting down and his organs were already enlarged,” Hunter’s mother Bridie said. “He ended up in intensive care for five nights to get all the numbers stabilised until they were low enough for him to receive chemotherapy,” she said. Ms Murphy said they had been in and out of hospital since the initial diagnosis, but he is now at the maintenance phase of his recovery. This means Hunter will receive treatment for a year and then will continued to be monitored after that. “We’re hoping we’ll be home for Christmas this year,” she said. “He’s only in hospital on a once-a-month basis now,” she said. Last year Hunter spent five-weeks straight in hospital, with that time spent watching 101 Dalmatians. Enter the Starlight Children’s Foundation, a wish granting charity. Hunter’s wish for a puppy came true and he received a Dalmatian puppy, ‘Rocky’, with the two best friends since the day they met. “Hunter was given a Starlight Wish back when he’d been in hospital for a few months, and that was something really lovely considering he had been stuck in a hospital room at four-yearsold,” Ms Murphy said. “Trying to have something for him to look forward to and for him to talk about or keep him distracted was a real blessing.” The Murphy’s are among thousands of families in Victoria who live through these struggles and are also one of the families involved in the 2020 Starlight Children’s Foundation Christmas Appeal. “[Donations will help] give people with children affected by Cancer a chance to make them feel happy and normal again,” Ms Murphy said.

Nothing to see here The assertion that Maddingley Brown Coal (MBC) has received large quantities of rock, requiring large numbers of truck movements, is false, according to their spokesperson. Last week there were reports MBC had commenced major work to construct its proposed Western Soil Treatment facility. “MBC has not – as has been reported – commenced on-site works that involve significant numbers of truck movements, or works that will create significant disruption,” the Western Soil Treatment spokesperson said. “As a condition of its approved Planning Scheme Amendment, MBC needed to have temporary signage and lighting delivered to access routes before any other work could commence. This occurred on Thursday 10 December.” “MBC is working to develop a competitive proposal that responds to community concerns and will endeavour to keep the community better informed as the project progress.” According to the WST spokesperson, the EPA advised that MBC’s Environment Management Plan (EMP) will be withdrawn because of a technical legal error. “The EPA has confirmed that, in its view, the EMP “met strict conditions designed to protect human health and the environment. That has not changed.”” MBC rejects the assertion that any of the actions it took last week were ‘illegal’.

Smash and grab burglary By Helen Tatchell A recently renovated hotel has been vandalised after thieves burgled the premises last Thursday morning. Offenders smashed a glass door at the Great Western Hotel in Ballan around 5.30am on 17 December, stealing 68 bottles of alcohol valued at approximately $2500. A spokesperson for Ballan police said the thieves targeted the bottle shop entry door. “There is CCTV surveillance, and it is an ongoing investigation with Moorabool CIU,” he said. It is alleged three males and one female in a white SUV wagon are of interest to police. Owner Mitch Duncan told the Moorabool News he was really disappointed in the crime. “On top of the theft, it is going to cost over $1000 to replace the glass in the door and clean up,” he said. “I don’t understand why people do that type of thing.” Mr Duncan also had a message for the current thieves. “We do not leave any cash on the premises either and one of the good things is we have very high security levels. There is CCTV in every room that is capable of easily recognising people and we have just installed, funny enough, a facial recognition system which is very detailed and able to identify a person even when masked. “It is a shame people do this and, those that receive stolen goods are just exasperating the issue.” The smashed entry door to the bottle shop at The Great Western Hotel in Ballan. Goodie boxes triple expectations By Caitlin Bewley The traditional meaning of an advent calendar carries the connotation of one sweet treat per day in December. This year, the Uniting Church in Bacchus Marsh did something a little different and reversed the process, asking the community to donate items for their Reverse Advent Calendar initiative (M/News Nov 17). An inaugural event for the church, the goal was set to receive 50-boxes over the entire month of December however, they tripled it The community donated around 160 boxes full of nonperishable foods, toiletries, and Christmas items. Iris Blythe, Chair of St Andrews’ Church Council, said people were asked to take their donations to the Church last Thursday, people were there ready with donations as soon as the volunteers arrived at 8.30am. “We are absolutely overwhelmed with the community support we have received,” Ms Blythe said. “It just kept growing and it’s often great quality items.” “I’m most impressed that people haven’t just gone for the cheapest things they

“People have been so thoughtful, someone even brought in a gluten free box,” she said. “Nearly everyone has tried to put in a little treat, it’s not all just basic food items as well.”

A 36-year-old man who is alleged to have stabbed a woman at a Bacchus Marsh address, has briefly appeared in the Ballarat Magistrates’ court. The incident occurred on May 23 when the accused Travis Labinas, allegedly stabbed a woman at a Queens Crescent address. The victim was subsequently taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with life-threatening injuries (M/News June 23). The man’s lawyer, Shanelle Veit, requested an adjournment at the December 10 appearance. She asked for a contested committal hearing, with her client contesting either the charges or the evidence, then the magistrate will decide whether or not the Mr Labinas should stand trial. During the hearing, Magistrate Johnathon Klestadt told Ms Veit that of the nine witnesses listed to provide evidence, two had been opposed by prosecution. However, Ms Veit said she would not pursue that matter further and those witnesses were no longer required. The matter was adjourned, and the accused was remanded in custody to appear in the Ballarat Magistrates’ court in May next year.

By Caitlin Bewley More than a little ray of sunshine peered through the doors of a local Real Estate agency, when over 70 gift donations were received from the community. The team at Ray White Bacchus Marsh ran a Christmas campaign called a Little Ray of Giving where members of the community were asked to donate gifts for children who usually go without presents during the holiday period (M/ News Dec 1). Community members donated 74 gifts for The Salvation Army, and $100 worth of vouchers given to Child and Family Services (Cafs). The donations were collected by the respective parties from the Bacchus Marsh real estate office on Tuesday December 15.

Property assistant and administrator for Ray White Bacchus Marsh, Ebonie Boreham said “the generosity of the local community was incredible”. “The gifts were a very good variety of age groups and gender that varied from ages two to 16.” Ms Boreham said they received feedback from multiple donors. “They were saying it was a fantastic idea to give gifts to the less fortunate children and that they were more than happy to help,” she said. “We’d like to thank the local community for their outstanding effort and generosity, we could not have done this without the help of locals, and we can’t wait for our next campaign to help others,” she said.

We’re upgrading the Ballarat Line As part of Victoria’s Big Build, the Ballarat Line Upgrade will deliver more frequent and reliable services for growing communities in Melbourne’s outer western suburbs, Bacchus Marsh, Ballan and Ballarat. Better stations, more services and improved reliability We've built a new station at Cobblebank and upgraded Rockbank, Ballan, Bacchus Marsh and Wendouree stations. Trains are using the 18km of track duplication between Melton and Deer Park West, helping boost reliability along the entire line. Locals are already benefitting from two new peak services – one in the morning and one in the afternoon – between Melton and Southern Cross Station. Following commissioning, critical safety testing and driver training, more than 100 new services will be introduced for communities along the Ballarat Line, including 45 new services during peak periods. This will mean trains every 20 minutes during peak times and trains every 40 minutes during off-peak.

More benefits to come Major construction is now finished but there’s still work to be done to get the new track and signalling ready for more new services.

Benefits for the local economy The Ballarat Line Upgrade has created more than 400 jobs, with benefits for local businesses and suppliers. The project’s investment in local economies has benefited more than 40 regional contractors and suppliers, including water carters, concrete manufacturers, fencing contractors and equipment rental companies.

Regional Rail Revival The Ballarat Line Upgrade is being delivered as part of the Regional Rail Revival program, which is upgrading every regional passenger rail line in Victoria and creating jobs and local supplier opportunities across the state.

Merle Closter told the Moorabool News that while there was no secret to a happy marriage, there were a few things that had made her marriage to Ron solid.

A couple who have lived in Moorabool since they were children are celebrating 70-years of marriage this week. A platinum milestone. Ron and Merle Closter originally met at a Debutante Ball in Kyneton, and were married at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Bacchus Marsh on 16 December, 1950. Robert Menzies was Prime Minister of Australia in 1950, a year that also saw the end to petrol rationing, nearly ten-years after it was introduced during World War II. Comic Court won the Melbourne Cup carrying 59kg and Essendon defeated North Melbourne in the VFL Grand Final by 38-points.

“We’ve had our ups and downs, there’s no doubt about that. You have to give a lot…we’ve just trundled along through the years, and before you know it, here we are at 70 years married. It can’t be right; we can’t have been married that long…it creeps up on you!” she joked. “We’re always busy, I think we didn’t have time to not get on with each other. We’ve never had a big argument, but it’s not natural not to have disagreements, I call them, not arguments. “And you’ve got to have a sense of humour, that’s important.” Ron and Merle have three children, nine grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Ron Closter turned 90 two weeks ago, while Merle will turn 90 next year.

The incident occurred in the southbound lane (between Daylesford and Greendale Roads) near Ballan at approximately 5.00pm on Wednesday 16 December. Members of Ballan Fire Brigade and Ballan police attended the single vehicle accident, with police reducing traffic to one lane of the dual lane highway. The driver of the vehicle did not suffer any injuries and told the Moorabool News he ran over something and then the tyre burst. “I went straight into the barrier and then zig-zagged a bit before stopping,” he said. “It was lucky I didn’t hit any other cars.” A spokesperson for Ballan police said no charges are pending. “It is a timely reminder for all vehicles passing emergency services, with their lights on, to slow down significantly to the required 40kph safe speed limit in these situations,” he said.

Money well spent By Caitlin Bewley

There is a little pre-school Christmas elf in Wallace, who spent her life savings on food, but not for herself. Five-year-old Winnie Kucz (pictured) of Wallace and District Kindergarten spent $75 on items to donate to the less fortunate this Christmas season, saying she thought of the idea all by herself. “I have been collecting money for two years and then I got more pocket money from my mum and dad,” Winnie said. “Then we went to the post office and put it in that machine, and they counted it. “They turned it into cents, and we bought all the food,” the five-year-old said. Winne said she received ‘five pieces of money every week’ which added up to $5 per week, all of which she used to buy food for the less fortunate. When asked why she decided to give her pocket money away and not buy toys for herself, she said she didn’t know, but soon agreed that it was because she was kind and thought of others. The donations were part of the kindergarten’s Reverse Advent Calendar initiative which saw students bring an item of food a day for families with food insecurity this holiday season. But it doesn’t stop there. The local kindergarten recently harvested their vegetable patch and created a harvest stall encouraging parents to buy their vegetables. This helped them raise $93.90 which was donated to BADGAR to care for injured wildlife. “Developing compassion, empathy and kindness for others is something we feel is really important in early childhood and embed this into everything we do,” kindergarten teacher Emily Corbet said. “We are really proud of Winnie for her act of kindness as we are of all the children for their donation to BADGAR and the Reverse Advent Calendar,” she said.

Hit-run on Woolpack adjourned By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Year Swinburne Uni) A Pentland Hills man charged with murder has appeared in the Ballarat Magistrates’ court. Damien Janson appeared on Thursday 10 December via video link from the Metropolitan Remand Centre. He was dressed in a black suit, a white shirt and sported a low ponytail. The 31-year-old was represented by Nelson Brown who requested the matter be adjourned to a date early next year so “ongoing discussions” could continue. Janson’s alleged offending occurred on May 20 after he allegedly struck and killed a motorcycle rider on Woolpack Road Maddingley – he is then alleged to have fled the scene on foot (M/News May 26). The accused later presented himself to police (May 22) and appeared before a bail justice later that day. He was remanded in custody and has remained there since. The 24-year-old rider of the motorcycle died at the scene after being struck by the ute Janson was allegedly driving, accompanied by two male passengers. Magistrate Klestadt adjourned the matter to February next year and the accused was remanded to reappear in court on that date. No application for bail was made.

By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Year Swinburne Uni) There are over 1600 schools in Victoria and one Ballan man has taken out top billing for best Business Manager working for the Department of Education. Matthew Smitten, won the Outstanding Business Manager Award at the Education Excellence Awards on November 20. He works at Bacchus Marsh Primary School, Mr Smitten told the Moorabool News he was nominated by a colleague earlier in the year and was one of three finalists that went on to win the award. The awards ceremony was held online and all Victorian schools were able to nominate their school’s business manager.

“It’s definitely been a hard year, and it’s definitely an honour and a privilege to be recognized, and to receive the award,” he said. “At the end of the day I do my job because I want to make a difference in the kids’ lives,” Mr Smitten said. “I’m not a teacher but working in the office and leading the administrative and operation side of the school; my team and I can make a difference even if it is more indirectly than directly.” When asked how he felt to win, Mr Smitten said he was shocked, considering there would have been a lot of competition. “There’s more than 1600 schools around the State that could have entered, so being a finalist and winning, it is quite an honour,” he said.

A joint initiative from the Federal Government and the Victorian Farmers Federation (VFF) is offering schools, primary producers and farmers up to $2000 for agricultural education. As part of the Government’s ‘Educating Kids about Agriculture’ program, the ‘Kids to Ag’ project will be administered by the VFF and funded by the Federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment. President of the VFF David Jochinke said that getting a hands-on, practical experience at local farms was vital to primary school education. “Kids learn by seeing and doing and the best way to understand the agriculture industry is to see it up-close and personal,” Mr Jochinke said. “These grants will provide the opportunity for young students to get a first-hand look at where their food comes from and how it’s made by visiting working farms and primary production sites.” Mr Jochinke said the grants would allow schools to see the entire farm-to-table process, and that he hoped kids visiting farms might be inspired to take up agricultural work one day. “A school group could apply for a series of visits which followed a product along an entire supply chain, perhaps from a grain farm, to a silo and finally to a bakery,” he said. “This is a fantastic opportunity for us

farmers and the entire agriculture industry to showcase the work that goes into producing our world-class food and fibre and hopefully inspire the next generation of Victorian farmers.” Applications for up to $2000 are now open and must be submitted at least a month prior to the planned activity, or the first of a series of activities. And I have ANOTHER dream… …where electricity generators are valued NOT JUST for the profits they extract from abundant renewable sources, but for the social conscience they display and the licence that they EARN from the countryside they dissect and the communities they seek to setup alongside... ...and where Lily D’Ambrosio deigns it fit to come out to the country, and sit, and speak with the folks she is oppressing, ignoring, representing. Where elected politicians plan the electrical infrastructure for our States, for the good of the nation, NOT the market operators who treat the community as a ‘cash cow’, profiteering from building infrastructure rather than meeting the electricity needs of consumers… …and where innovation and efficiency, and diversity of technology, is welcomed and encouraged by the electricity market operator, and benefit is measured NOT JUST by market greed but by the community’s two yardsticks, of lower prices AND lowering the risk we face from extreme weather, bushfire and climate change. Where renewable energy generators CARE about how their ‘green energy’ gets to the market, and demand that the transmission network service provider is equally as green and moves their power underground, rather than turning a blind eye and ignoring what is really, their ‘dirty little secret’… … and where hypocrisy and inequality, and narrowminded opposition to the goodness which is underground HVDC transmission are all put aside, and an underground transmission solution is meted out to the good folks of Melton, Moorabool, Ballarat and Central Highlands shires, and not just reserved for the privileged few in Gippsland, at Wonthaggi, and with the Marinus Link… …and where the view from my window, stretching out across ploughed and green fields, to the thickets of windfarm turbines on the horizon, to my right, and to my left, is NOT encumbered by a line of high voltage transmission towers cutting across and ruining what beauty I have left in the short and middle distance. Share this dream, let’s STOP AUSNET’S TOWERS.

To inform your readers of the recent actions by AusNet Services, I am submitting a letter our group sent to the Managing Director. Dear Mr Narvaez, Re: Landowner relations I write to express my concerns about the coercive and intimidatory conduct of agents acting on behalf of AusNet for the Western Victorian Transmission Network Project (WVTNP). On Monday 7 December, I received the following report: “I was called today about my property in [withheld]. It was a different rep than the one that contacted me earlier in the year. First, she said she was calling to introduce herself, and she wanted to meet at the property (which has no dwelling). I said no, I have no interest in helping AusNet acquire my land, and although I know they can enter my property anyway, I would not consent. I was clear from the start that I was not interested, but still spent 17 minutes on the phone while she tried to convince me to sign a Land Access Agreement. She said she could offer a couple of $1000 gift vouchers, I still said no. She kept trying to convince me, saying that if I know they can access the land anyway, why would I say no to thousands in vouchers (my emphasis). I just kept saying no, it’s the principle of it and that I disagree with the way this whole process has been undertaken”. This is not an isolated case. Nor are these concerns new. Landowners in AusNet’s area of investigation for the WVTNP are understandably anxious about this project. Many have lived and worked on their families’ land for generations and now face an uncertain future. This uncertainty is taking its toll and is compounded by these tactics used by agents acting for your company. I seek your assurance that these coercive, intimidating and predatory tactics will stop. If you would like me to provide you with the contact details of the individual who made the above complaint so that you may contact them directly, I would be pleased to provide them. If you would like to take positive steps towards restoring the community’s faith and trust in this process, I would invite you to personally come and meet with people to hear their concerns and, as the most senior of AusNet’s executives provide assurances about how these matters are being addressed. Dear Editor, I would like to express my bitter disappointment at Wednesday’s (9 Dec) 19-18 vote in the Legislative Council, which saw an Opposition proposal to halt the dumping of toxic soil in Bacchus Marsh defeated. The Liberal-National motion, supported by many crossbenchers, would have prevented Planning Minister Richard Wynne’s amendment to the Moorabool Shire planning scheme. I’m deeply disappointed for the Bacchus Marsh community that we came so incredibly close to stopping this appalling project, falling just one vote short. From the beginning the planning system has failed the people of Bacchus Marsh. It has permitted this monstrously unsuitable proposal to progress, when by any measure it defies sense and reason. It has always been clear that Ministers have sought the quickest and easiest solution to dig themselves out of their West Gate Tunnel Toxic soil hole. Their cynical consultation exercises, failure to provide documentation, and their stonewall approach to local residents, Moorabool Shire Council, and the Legislative Council of the Victorian Parliament have been completely consistent. This was clearly a pre-determined decision, and Ministers have worked backwards to justify a decision which rescues their sinking flagship project. Along the way they have displayed total contempt for local residents, council officials, and elected representatives at every level. Tuesday’s (Dec 8) decision by the EPA to withdraw approval for the MBC Environmental Management Plan is the latest and clearest indication that pressure has been coming from the top. In combination with Minister D’Ambrosio’s cynical disposal of inconvenient environmental protection laws, it makes crystal clear the Government’s disregard for any existing safeguards. The fight goes on. I remain confident that Victoria’s planning and environmental protections will prove sufficiently robust to reject this obviously flawed process and I will continue my advocacy for the Bacchus Marsh community, especially when the four local Labor MPs (McGhie, Settle, Tierney and Pulford), are absent and silent. Ballan Brumbies Basketball

In the final round of Ballarat Basketball Association games for 2020 many of the Brumbies teams found themselves depleted due to various Christmas activities. Nonetheless there were several excellent wins and encouraging defeats. The Under 10 girls highlighted the weekend, coming out convincing 18-4 winners over Saints Dream. A slow start to the game saw both teams struggle to score before Ava Conroy finally broke the deadlock. Ailah McFall dictated play for the Brumbies, both setting up teammates and scoring herself when she could. However, it was the defensive end where the girls shone. Despite being outsized by a giant Saints side, the Brumbies controlled the defensive end of the floor through hard work and no little courage, typified by Grace Monterosso - the Brumbies youngest and smallest player repeatedly tying up the Saints centres. A fantastic performance, giving the girls, and rookie coach Heath Cooper, a win to see out the year.

The Centre held a Twilight Meet last Friday evening to finalise the first half of the season. A modified meet was conducted where all athletes competed in 4 events. During the meet the Centre welcomed a visit from Santa, who arrived at Masons Lane Reserve in a local police car, with lights and sirens going. The excitement from the kids was priceless. Many of the youngsters put in last minute requests with Santa before gathering for age group photos and an icy pole. Oliver Booth was awarded the PB Star of the Week after claiming personal best results in the 70m, 100m, 200m and Discus. Entries are now open for the 2021 State Combined event. The Championships will take place at Lakeside Stadium, Albert Park on the 30th and 31st January 2021. Athletes in the Under 9 through to Under 16 age groups are eligible to participate. Entries numbers are capped and close on January 17. Enter via the LAVic portal. Little Athletics will now take a break, returning to competition on Saturday 16 January. Training will recommence on Thursday 21 January, as will relay training for all Under 9-16 Relay Squad members.

Timely win for Lions By Todd Whelan Darley Cricket Club Reigning BCA Premiers Darley sit firmly entrenched inside the newly vamped top six heading into the Christmas break after a confidence building 75 run win over Mt Clear at the weekend. The win stretches the Lions unbeaten run at home to 19. You would have to go back to round five (November 3) of the 2018/19 season to revisit their last failure at the fortress, namely Darley Park. Flamboyant opening batsman Danza Hyatt (73) top scored for the Lions after they won the toss and elected to bat. While Anthony Taylor (6), Captain Bradley Barnes (4) and Ryan Ali (0) missed out at the top of the order, Madushanka Ekanayake (37) and Ben Longhurst (14) provided Hyatt with the much needed support to combine for game defining partnerships of 59 and 37 respectively. But it was the former West Indian Internationals defiant knock that deserved all of the plaudits. Hyatt saw wickets fall at the opposite end with the score at 7, 18, 55, 77 and 78 before Ekanayake dug in to rescue a sinking ship, arresting momentum away from the visitors, who were unbeaten since the opening day of the season. When Hyatt became the sixth wicket to fall on 137, the Lions were hopeful of conjuring another 40 or 50 runs from ‘a tail’ more than capable. ‘Eka’ and eventual not out batsman Hasi Wickramasinghe (15*), saw the innings through for the best part before being bowled out for 171. Of the past eleven, 50 over fixtures held at Darley Park dating backB A to November CCHUS MARSH 2018, the average score posted by the team batting first is 161. Combine the numbers with a mature Lions bowling attack, it was fair to assume the reigning premiers had their noses in front at the break. Noses became a gap and more in favour of Darley very quickly as the response from second placed Mt Clear with the bat was meek at best. The visitors were never in the run chase as the Lions attack went about ‘their thing’. Wickets fell with relative ease as Mt Clear’s top and middle order offered very little resistance losing 5/7 at one stage, and essentially handing Darley the points in the process. “And he is absolutely flying” says race caller Dan Mielicki of Bettor Be The Bomb after Basil Dooley’s fabulous flying machine stole the show at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night. The description was also apt for reinsman Jack Laugher, who showed plenty of aggression to steer the six-year-old gelding to victory in the TAB Long May We Play Westburn Grant Free For All, the first of a running double for the former Tasmanian. “Last week put the writing on the wall really, (Bettor Be The Bomb) getting home the way he did,” Laugher told Trots Vision post-race. “(After that) start I came in and said to Basil how much the horse has improved in the 12 months since I drove it last – he has come a long, long way. He’s still getting better as well, the more he goes, he has turned into a really nice horse.” And that was only reaffirmed on Saturday night, when Laugher registered his 87th win of the season, a remarkable 15 of which have been at metropolitan grade. The 21-year-old, who’s in his fifth season as a reinsman, tucked into the running line behind Arden Voyager, with Somewhere Secret holding the lead after an aggressive early move by Jason Lee to head Sicario. Laugher then slipped from the one-one to the breeze at the bell, advancing past Arden Voyager who appeared to be over-racing, and after a series of moderate quarters for the class the lead pair let down with a 27.3-second sprint to the line. After losing a length at the turn, Bettor Be The Bomb rallied and raced clear in the final 50 metres to score for owner Paula Martin. “He’s gotten used to that tougher racing and just kept getting better,” Laugher said. “I think when they got the horse he was a C1 (country one class), I was driving him a bit those early stages and he won a few races, got to about a C4, C5 and I wasn’t really sure he’d go past your (metropolitan) grade, but he’s gone well and truly past that. “He is racing some of the nicer horses going around in the state at the moment and holding his own against them and beating them. Basil’s done a terrific job with, from the day he got him he’s just kept improving.” And there looks like being more good times ahead for the Bettors Delight gelding out of 10-time winning mare Atom Bomb Belle. “The horse is actually pretty cocky at the moment, he’s feeling good about himself and you’ve got to let him feel like he’s the boss a little bit,” Laugher said. “He’s feeling really good and Basil’s got him going good. When you are sitting behind him, you’ve just got to press the button and when you do you can zoom away. He’s quite intelligent.” The win was the first of a double for Laugher, who then preceded to score on Van Mara in the Allied Express Pace for new trainer Kate Hargreaves. Reinsman Chris Alford also walked away with a pair of wins, having scored with Helansin and Yorkshire, while Kate and Andy Gath produced a further winning double in the night’s final two races. Their pair, Monaro Maro and McLovin, both did it tough in the breeze before scoring, with the latter grinding past brilliant mare Dance Craze late to reaffirm his place back at the head of the Australian trotting.
