‘Mayory’ Christmas

‘Twas the week before the beginning of December when four Christmas trees appeared throughout the Shire of Moorabool, for the first time in the history of Council.

This years’ Council Christmas program saw four decorated trees erected in Bacchus Marsh, Ballan, Blackwood, and Gordon. Two of the trees are surrounded with white picket fencing and large wrapped presents, that light up at night. Even the public rubbish bins received a makeover, with Council placing Christmas themed signs on many in the towns.

Newly elected Mayor of Moorabool, Tom Sullivan, was impressed with the decorations and highlighted it really was what the communities needed.

“It’s been a terrible year for everyone and there is nothing better than bringing a bit of cheer to all with the simplicity of a Christmas tree and decorations,” he said.

It doesn’t stop there in Ballan, with the local members of Wombat Regional Arts Network working alongside Council to decorate the streetscape of the main street.

Volunteer Carmel Hunter told the Moorabool News the job took a whole day to complete, but she was proud of what the group achieved.

“We’ve received fantastic community feedback via social media, in the street and from the Council, everybody is loving it,” she said.

“While we were putting up the decorations people were coming up to us and telling us how much they love when we decorate the town for Christmas.”

Executive Manager of Community Planning and Economic Development, Henry Bezuidenhout said the Council are looking forward to hearing community feedback following the 2020 Christmas program.

“We look forward to engaging further with our community in January to hear their stories,” he said. “Our team has made a great start for Christmas 2020, and we hope to build on this in the years to come,” he said.

As part of Council’s Christmas program, they have organised for Letters to Santa to be collected, a roving Santa, Christmas shop window competitions, Christmas decorations in Ballan in collaboration with Wombat Regional Arts Network and local marketing campaigns.

Councillor Sullivan said the program unites communities and “there is a great need for that now as we come out of the COIVD pandemic.”

MBC ‘Wynnes’ tick of approval

By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni) Maddingley Brown Coal’s proposed West Gate Tunnel soil storage facility has been approved by Planning Minister Richard Wynne, to the anger of locals, schools and community groups in the Bacchus Marsh area.

Amendment C95 of the Moorabool Planning Scheme was signed off by Minister Wynne on November 23, giving MBC approval to receive, store and process the PFAS-contaminated soil.

Cleanaway’s Ravenhall site has also been approved by the Minister.

An Explanatory Report on Amendment C95 outlined perceived risks to Bacchus Marsh’s clean values, waterways, schools, investments, employment, heritage values, assets and infrastructure – but claimed storing the soil would have a “positive net community benefit, economically and socially”.

Newly elected Moorabool Mayor Tom Sullivan said he didn’t see how the proposal benefitted Moorabool.

“At this point in time, I don’t think the community perceives any benefit…and the comments made by the Minister probably reflect more of a ‘macro’ type approach, whereas for the Bacchus Marsh community residents it’s more ‘micro’, how it impacts on the community here,” Cr Sullivan told the Moorabool News.

“The impact on Moorabool is something that Council is very, very concerned about, and has been over a period of time, since this whole thing started. From day one we’ve expressed our concerns, and that’s been reflected by the community.

“Technically the site hasn’t been chosen yet, there’s still some time to go before that may occur. To my understanding there are two other sites that are being considered to take the tunnel spoil, so we have to wait for that,” he said.

Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell was far less subtle in his comments about the decision during an interview on ABC Radio Ballarat.

“It’s a disaster, really. Here we are in probably one of the highestgrowth areas in the peri-urban, and they decide to do things like this,” Cr Tatchell told host Steve Martin.

“It’s just another example of the absolute contempt that State Government has for people in rural Victoria.”

Labor’s Member for Melton Steve McGhie, was not available for comment and a spokesperson from his office told the Moorabool News the Planning Minister’s decision was not made lightly.

“The EPA have looked at this in detail and found the proposal was safe. The Planning Minister has considered MBCs application and found that it was appropriate. However, MBC has a long way to go to gain the trust of the community, and they need to do a much better job communicating with the community.” the spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for Michaela Settle, Member for Buninyong, told the Moorabool News the amendment was a decision “at the Minister [for Planning]’s level…it’s not a decision for Parliament.”

“When a Minister for Planning tables a planning amendment scheme, it sits in Parliament for 10 days. Most of these go straight through with no problem…in this case, in the Upper House they’ve moved a motion to disallow it. Ms Settle is in the Lower House, so she won’t be voting on it.” the spokesperson added.

Shadow Minister for Transport Infrastructure, David Davis said Labor has “outrageously”, stripped planning powers from Moorabool Shire Council.

“The secretive planning process has cut out the local community and the Shire of Moorabool,” he said.

“The Liberals and Nationals have placed on the Notice Paper a motion to disallow the planning approval given this week.

“We will seek the support of the Upper House to overturn the undemocratic and unsafe planning scheme amendment that, if not disallowed, would allow the dumping of toxic PFAS contaminated West Gate Tunnel spoil near the Bacchus Marsh township.”

WYNNE PROMISES TO PROTECT AGRICULTURE Three days after approving the MBC site for the contaminated soil storage, Mr Wynne published a media release regarding the State Government’s commitment to protecting green wedges and farmland.

On Thursday 26 November, the release, titled ‘Protecting Melbourne’s Green Wedges and Farmland’, stated “important green areas located within 100 kilometres of Melbourne support thousands of jobs in conservation, tourism and agriculture and are also crucial for food production”.

The Government is taking submissions on plans to protect peri-urban agricultural land that lies beyond 100 kilometres of the Melbourne CBD, the release read.

“We’re protecting these important green areas to support thousands of jobs while protecting our food supply and improving Melbourne’s liveability,” Mr Wynne said.

“Green wedges are crucial to our growth and prosperity and these planning controls will make sure they are protected from overdevelopment so they can continue to provide for current and future generations.”

Mayor again, after 20-years

By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni) The longest-serving Councillor in Moorabool Shire history has been elected as the new Mayor, while a new figure on the political scene has been elected Deputy Mayor.

Tom Sullivan has been the West Ward Councillor since 1996 and served as Mayor in two consecutive terms from 1998 – 2000. On the other hand, the new Deputy Mayor, Rod Ward, was first-elected in the East Ward in the 24 October Council elections and, is a first time Councillor.

At a Special Meeting of Council, the Statutory & Appointments Meeting, Cr Sullivan was nominated for Mayor by East Moorabool’s Cr Tonia Dudzik on Monday 23 November, and with no other nominations for Mayor, accepted the top job.

However, the election for Deputy Mayor was a two-horse race, with Cr Dudzik nominated by Cr Moira Berry, and Cr Ward nominated by outgoing Mayor Cr David Edwards.

Councillors David Edwards, Ally Munari and Paul Tatchell backed Cr Ward’s nomination, while Councillor Moira Berry was a lone voice for Cr Dudzik.

Cr Sullivan said it was a privilege to serve the Moorabool community as Mayor, and praised Cr Edwards for “laying a strong foundation” during his past tenure as Mayor.

“It’s a great honour to be Mayor of such a great municipality.

It’s a very vibrant and exciting time to be on Council,” Cr Sullivan told the Moorabool News.

“My individual things I’d like to see are those which I indicated during the election….sewering of Bungaree and Wallace, which would allow growth in those communities.

That’s not something to be done in the first year, but hopefully over the four-year term at Council that can be done.

“From a mayoral point of view, I’d like to see us, as a Council, consolidate and build upon what we’ve achieved and keep that trajectory going, keep providing the best outcomes for our communities,” he said.

In his new role as Deputy Mayor, Cr Ward told the Moorabool News he too was excited by the opportunity to serve, but was humble when asked about his new role.

“I was elated, I’m excited to be given the opportunity by the people of East Moorabool to serve on Council, and to have the support of the other Councillors to be elected Deputy Mayor was an incredible honour,” he said.

“I’m going in with my eyes wide open. I know I’ve got a steep learning curve. I’m a very committed and energetic person, so I’ll be spending a lot of time learning from those experienced Councillors and getting up to speed on the key issues.

“I actually met Tom [Sullivan] when he was last Mayor, and I’ve followed his history on Council…I’ve always been impressed by his commitment and devotion to his duties, and hopefully I can learn a lot from him,” Cr Ward said.

In response to the Moorabool News’ Facebook post about the election of Rod Ward as Deputy Mayor, Cr Berry responded that it was “A shame we didn’t see the gender equality get through for either”.

However, when asked by the Moorabool News what she meant by this, Cr Berry said it was a “throwaway line”, and said she was “excited to be working with all Councillors over the next four years”.

“It’s great for our Shire to have three women who were successful in this year’s elections.” Cr Berry added.

Both the Mayor and Deputy Mayor will serve one-year terms, with the next mayoral election to occur in November 2021.

Have respect, Call it Out Take a stand against family violence. That is the encouraging message for a Victorian government initiative, and Moorabool Shire Council is participating.

Respect Victoria’s Respect Women: ‘Call It Out’ campaign is part of the global 16 Days of Activism against gender-based violence and runs from November 25 to December 10.

This year’s campaign theme, ‘Respect Is…’, will highlight messages of equality and respect across the state.

Moorabool Shire Council CEO Derek Madden said this was a time to actively promote gender equality and take a stand to end men’s violence against women.

“We are partnering with Djerriwarrh Health Services on a number of programs/initiatives to support the campaign.

“This includes a poster series featuring local women and men, a virtual walk event to raise awareness of the prevention of violence against women, and art and library displays at the Lerderderg Library,” Mr Madden said.

Council received $2,500 from Respect Victoria to run initiatives that increase the community’s understanding of respect during the 16 Days of Activism and beyond.

Identifying needs and wants of women

An obstetrician who wants to “bridge the maternity unit gap” in rural hospitals, is determined to work hard to get the job done.

Former Head of Maternity and current obstetrician at the Bacchus Marsh Hospital, Dr Nisha Khot, has been working at the hospital since 2015 and recently joined the board of the Rural Doctors Association of Victoria (RDAV).

She told the Moorabool News her interest in joining the board stemmed from her willingness to advocate for rural healthcare, especially maternity services.

“The trail of local maternity industries shutting down is a big concern to me because local women want to have the option to have their babies locally.

“Every time a maternity unit shuts down, it’s like the whole town then loses not only the maternity unit, but also the midwives who work there, and the families who want to settle down and live there,” Dr Khot said.

“That kind of destroys the charm of a small town and the welcoming effect small towns usually have on young families.”

Dr Khot said she has no knowledge of the local maternity ward’s closure, but said she bases her passions and beliefs on the closure of other small wards across the state.

“My intention in joining the [RDAV] was to bridge the maternity unit gap,” she said. “I would like to see more of the ‘woman-centered care’ that women want.

“Women want to have their babies in smaller units where they get that one on one care, where they’re looked after by the midwives and doctors that they’ve developed a relationship with throughout their pregnancy,” Dr Khot continued.

Pollies say budget good for Moorabool

By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni) The State Budget was released last Tuesday, and local State MPs Steve McGhie and Michaela Settle have been spruiking what the Budget promises the Moorabool area.

They believe it is a big investment.

Ms Settle is the Member for Buninyong and said she was excited about the millions pledged for Moorabool Landcare and social housing.

“Recently I have been asking the community what they want, and this truly budget delivers on what I’ve heard. Locally we will invest $500,000 to protect the beautiful Werribee, Lerderderg and Moorabool rivers from invasive plants and pests,” she said.

“We will restore the former railway building in Lal Lal for community groups, buy land for a new CFA station at Morrisons and invest at least $20 million in new social housing locally.

“This is a budget for extraordinary times.

We are doing what we can to deliver for our local community,” she said.

Member for Melton Steve McGhie emphasised how the State Budget would deliver for Moorabool on infrastructure and power.

“This Budget will take the next steps towards delivering the brand-new hospital (Melton) our growing community needs – making sure local families can rely on care,

close to home,” he said.

“This year’s Budget also proudly delivers the biggest household energy efficiency package of any state, ever. It will cut power bills for families and create thousands of new jobs.”

Mr McGhie said it will also deliver safety and signalisation improvements at Main, Grant and Griffith Streets and Gisborne Road in Bacchus Marsh.

“This Budget will also invest in works to protect the Lerderderg and Werribee Rivers – making sure these rivers remain healthy and available for all of our community.”

Mr McGhie also announced that there would be a state-wide boost to the Growing Suburbs Fund – on top of the $25 million boost the Victorian Government introduced earlier in the year, an additional $50 million will be added.

Moorabool Shire Council CEO Derek Madden said the extension of the Growing Suburbs Fund was exciting news for Moorabool as one of the fastest-growing shires in Victoria.

“We are happy there is more funding in the Growing Suburbs Fund, and we’ll be looking at our projects to see what we can apply for.”

Mr Madden told the Moorabool News.

In September, Council was successful in securing a $2.5 million grant from the Growing Suburbs Fund for upgrades to Darley Park.

Embrace the giving season

By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Yr Swinburne Uni) A little ray of sunshine is shining as a local real estate agency and two not-for-profit organizations unite to gather gifts to bring Christmas cheer to the less fortunate in the community.

Ray White Bacchus Marsh has partnered with Child Family Services (Cafs) and The Salvation Army to launch the ‘A little Ray of giving’ campaign.

The team at Ray White are asking members of the community to donate gifts and vouchers that they will then pass on to the children of families in need at this time of year.

Principal of Ray White, Erin Cubley, said this is the first year

the Bacchus Marsh team had been involved in the campaign, but they’re looking to make it their “biggest year yet”.

“Our Christmas tree is up, and we urge everyone who is able to bring in a gift for those families who are in need,” she said.

“It’s a really simple way to put a smile on the face of someone who might otherwise go without at Christmas.”

The real estate agency opened in the middle of the COVID pandemic (June) and has already seen a steady flow of donated gifts coming in the door.

Office administrator Sarah Lacey told the Moorabool News the office has set a goal to collect and donate 150 gifts.

‘We’ve had such a horrible year that we wanted to be a part

of the campaign so we could give back to our community,” she said. “We want do something for the people that have been affected more than we have,” she said.

Due to COVID-19 protocols, Cafs Bacchus Marsh is asking for gift cards and vouchers, but people who prefer to donate gifts will have the opportunity to give to do so in the care of The Salvation Army.

To donate to the ‘A little Ray of giving’ campaign, simply drop the gift off to Ray White Bacchus Marsh located at Shop 31, 160 – 194 Main Street, Bacchus Marsh.

Cafs and The Salvation Army are set to collect the donated gifts at 10am on Tuesday 15 December.

Summer means swimming

By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Yr Swinburne Uni) Summer’s here and the time is right. The right time to open up the swimming pools within Moorabool.

Cool relief can be found at both the Bacchus Marsh and Ballan outdoor swimming pools from this Saturday 5 December, remaining open until Sunday 7 March (excluding Christmas Day).

The pools are scheduled to be open seven days a week from 11am until 7pm, subject to temperature policies.

COVID-19 regulations had not affected the pools operating dates and times, with a Council spokesperson telling the Moorabool News, that it was dependent on the advice of the State Government and is subject to change.

“The operation of swimming pools will be under direction of State Government restrictions,” the spokesperson said.

“This is a rapidly changing situation, and the facilities will be adapting to keep up with the current advice.”

With a significant lack of swimming lessons available during the year due to COVID-19, concerns have been raised with children’s swimming abilities.

The Council spokesperson said, “the swimming pools operate under a lifeguard to patron ratio in line with Life Saving Victoria Guidelines.”

“Active parental supervision of children around water is also a requirement of the guidelines,” the spokesperson said.

Temperature Policies

Pools will close on days below 23 degrees.

Reduced hours on days where the temperature is between 23 and 25 degrees (3pm – 6pm weekdays and 1pm – 4pm weekends).

Full trading hours when above 26 degrees.

35 degrees or more, business hours will be extended (11am – 8pm) In January, the pool remains open to full trading hours(11am-7pm) on days above 23 degrees.

Pain caused from handcuffs

By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Yr Swinburne Uni) Multiple police officers attended a Bacchus Marsh hotel late last year to detain a man after ‘causing issues’, and then refused to be placed in handcuffs.

The 31-year-old appeared before Magistrate Bob Kumar on Friday 6 November and entered a plea of guilty to being drunk in a public place and resisting arrest.

Police lawyer Paul Thomas told the court Trent Uden was at a hotel on the Main Street of Bacchus Marsh on 22 November 2019, when he was approached by security guards after ‘causing issues’ in the hotel.

“The accused became argumentative towards security guards, smelt of alcohol,

struggled to stand and his speech was slurred,” Mr Thomas said.

Uden was arrested for being drunk in a public place and refused to be placed in handcuffs.

The court heard police called for back-up with multiple officers attending to assist and detain the accused.

Mr Thomas said Uden was later conveyed to a Ballarat hospital with pain in his wrists.

“That’s partly why I didn’t want them to put the handcuffs on because of the pressure they were putting on my wrists,” Mr Uden told the court.

“The handcuffs did damage to my wrists,” he said.

Magistrate Kumar convicted Uden and imposed a $750 fine.

Recycling plan may impose on Cash-a Can

By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni) Victoria could finally have its own 10c refund scheme for bottles and cans by 2023, and while environmental groups and councils have praised the plan, not everyone is thrilled.

The Victorian Government has proposed a ‘split governance’ system for the state’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS), in which the Government would provide “regulatory oversight and ongoing evaluation of the scheme”, while a Government-appointed coordinator and network operators would manage the system.

A CDS works by adding a small charge to drink prices to cover recycling costs, with consumers receiving a refund (typically 10 cents) for each drink container returned to a collection point.

The Boomerang Alliance – a coalition of 52 environmental groups – issued a media release earlier this month, declaring that if the plan went ahead Victoria would have “Australia’s best 10c refund scheme for drink containers”.

The group’s Director, Jeff Angel, applauded the Government for the research it had done, and for not allowing big beverage companies to dominate the refund scheme.

“The government’s preferred approach encourages the beverage companies to be accountable for the pollution they produce, and also creates an independent operator…with good engagement of drink companies and a clear focus on collecting as many used bottles and cans as possible.’’ Mr Angel said.

Moorabool Shire Council CEO Derek Madden told

the Moorabool News that Council was pleased a CDS was in the works and was now awaiting further information.

“Council is supportive of, and has pushed for, the implementation of the CDS in Victoria, and is glad the State Government is taking the lead,” Mr Madden said.

“Council staff are reviewing the documentation that has been provided, which broadly outlines what is required for the program to be ready for 2022/23.”

Mr Madden said Council is keen to see some of the finer details of how the program will be rolled out and what it will mean for their residents.

However, some community groups, such as the Bacchus Marsh Lions Club, have raised concerns that the scheme could cut into their can-collecting fundraisers.

“Whether we keep collecting them [cans and bottles], whether people want to do that because they can get more saving themselves, I’m not sure,” Bacchus Marsh Lions President Russ Hendry told the Moorabool News.

“Some big operators will probably take it over, I don’t know…but at the moment, we’re just going along as we go normally. We don’t make millions out of it…but it’s a community project we do.”

Mr Hendry said it would probably chip into their local Cash-a-Can program.

“It’s part of our income…we fund lots of things, lots of projects and foundations…so it’ll probably impact on that.”

The consultation process closed on 30 November.

Dear Editor, The articles in the Moorabool News (24 Nov) page 3 regarding the protection of wedge tailed eagles and others, plus that on page 9 regarding Bald Hill, draws my attention to the AusNet overhead powerlines.

AusNet plans a corridor through Moorabool via Myrniong coming down to Swans Road, Darley on its way to Sydenham of 84-metre high pylons. Their ungainly sight will not only destroy those properties which they plan to go through nearby, but also those living on them and tragically their value.

In addition to the danger to those magnificent birds and to fire (close to the Black Forest) the Council’s planned 1000-plus steps to reach the top of Bald Hill for a view of our glorious countryside will be jeopardised by a vista of AusNet pylons for miles around.

Though the Andrews’ government has given a contract to AusNet for this project, AusNet claims no decision has yet been made. However, at least two property owners have been written to as of interest in

To date, the cost of a snake removal in Moorabool is borne by the resident however, in surrounding metropolitan shires, it is a free service.

In what would be a first for Moorabool Shire Council, Jarrod Bingham, a former Councillor for East Moorabool and professional snake catcher, believes there’s no reason Council can’t pay for the service when neighbouring councils can.

“I contract out to the Councils of Melton, Brimbank, Hume and Wyndham. Other snake catchers contract out to Hobsons Bay Council…so I guess that’s effectively where the whole idea comes from,” Mr Bingham told the Moorabool News.

“Some of these councils have had the service for longer than ten years…these councils are seeing increased safety for residents and wildlife, because at the end of the day, there are people that don’t have money available to pay for a snake catcher…so they’re more inclined to take it into their own hands, and unfortunately that’s when people get bitten,” he said.

“Two neighbouring councils of Moorabool have a free snake removal service, so let’s get Moorabool on board.”

But not everyone is convinced the idea is a good one, including Central Ward Councillor Paul Tatchell.

“I think it’s complex because we live in a rural area. I think the whole idea of snake catching with councils is meant for metropolitan areas….you go anywhere in the rural sector and there are snakes everywhere,” Cr Tatchell told the Moorabool News.

“It’d be pretty expensive…I don’t really have an opinion whether we should have it or not, but it’s more expensive in country areas, because of the volume of snakes. Their habitat is the rural areas.”

Cr Tatchell said he couldn’t imagine it working in the west of the Shire, with snakes being part of the natural habitat.

“But maybe it’d work in parts of Bacchus Marsh or Ballan.

We’d have to look at the cost…it’s about $150 to $200 a call-out I think.

The petition is still pending, with Mr Bingham planning to collect names, addresses and email addresses of petition signatories digitally, and promote the idea on social media.

Mr Bingham is 30-years old and took up snake catching after he volunteered at Australia Zoo, alongside the Irwins, during Year 10-12 school holidays in 2006-2008.

He was an all-round animal keeper.

Snakes removed by Mr Bingham are done safely and then relocated back into nearby bushland in accordance with the Wildlife Act regulations.

Lions ‘bat’ to the drawing board Darley Cricket Club - By Todd Whelan Darley coach Brian Wheelahan faces his toughest challenge this week, aiming to restore the ‘killer’ confidence into a group reeling after a one run loss on the road to winless Naps-Sebas last weekend.

Needing two runs to win off the last ball, number seven batsman Drew Locke (27) was caught at square leg sending the home side into a frenzy of euphoric celebration. It was heartbreaking for Locke who fell agonisingly short having been at the crease since the score was 5/55.

What can’t be ignored in the aftermath, is that the writing had been on the wall for some time for the Lions, suggesting a second season loss was imminent despite the weight of the favorites tag into most, if not all of their six games to date.

The reigning premiers while fourth on the table with four wins, have failed to recapture the heights of their unbeaten 2019/20, especially with the bat.

Wheelahan indicated the Lions had been patchy at best over recent weeks, but a ‘complete performance’ was only just around the corner. Needless to say, the prediction remains ‘on-hold’ for another week.

After losing the toss, the Lions were sent into the field and were forced to wait until the score reached 43 to make their first breakthrough. Then came the brilliance of the competition’s most seasoned bowling group, hungry to strike. The home-side’s next 43 runs came at a price, losing six wickets in the process. The defending champions now flexing their muscles right on top at 7/86. While a further 42 runs were added to build a modest total of 128, Wheelahan thought the Lions had lost their way a bit in the final part of the innings.

BACCHUS MARSH “The bowling group was excellent for the most part but we thought we gave up too many runs in the final five overs,” Wheelahan said.

“Our inside-the-ring fielding was not to our standards and we need to work at being cleaner, like we’re renowned for.”

Set 129 to win from their 50 overs the Lions lost Marcus Ingvorsen (3), Mitch Ward (0), Danza Hyatt (14), Captain Bradley Barnes (5) and Hasi Wickramasinghe (1) before the score had passed 50, leaving youngster Brodie Ward and numbers seven through eleven, to find the remaining 80.

Youth golf in full swing

The Victorian Junior Country Regions tournament is set to take place this weekend, after being postponed due to COVID-19 From Friday 4 December to Sunday 6 December, the best junior players from regional Victoria will play for their region and, it includes two of Moorabool’s finest.

Jarryd Martin and Taruni Prasad, both from Bacchus Marsh West Golf Club, have been selected in the 14-player Ballarat District team.

Each team consists of eight boys and three girls, with the competition to be played over 54 holes of stroke play. The best six boys’ scores and the best two girls’ scores will count for each day, with a stroke trophy and a handicap trophy to be awarded.

The first round will be played on the Friday afternoon at Buninyong Golf Club, with the second round to be played Saturday morning at Midlands Golf Club. The competition will finish at the third round on Sunday morning, at Ballarat Golf Club.

This will be the first time that girls are included in the competition, a move which was advocated for by Ballarat District Golf.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics With the further easing of COVID restrictions last Sunday, Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics were able to return to their regular weekly program. The Centre also welcomed the return of spectators, with many grandparents and family members in attendance to support the kids.

Athletes recorded an impressive 358 personal best results.

Lachlan Simons and Austin Shea recorded 6PBs to be awarded PB Stars of the Week.

This Saturday will be the Centre Combined Event, formerly known as Multi Event. There is no entry or fee payment required, as this is a scheduled BMLAC meet. All registered athletes will compete in five events - hurdles, sprint, distance, discus & long jump, gaining points in each event.

All five events must be competed in to have completed the Combined Event. Athletes must arrive by 8.30am for the first event. If one event is not competed in, that athlete will be deemed ineligible to win an award.

Presentations will be made the following week. Trophies are awarded to the winners of each age group with medals for second and third. All athletes will receive a Certificate of Participation.

Athletes must be in correct uniform (Club polo and plain black shorts), including Subway registration tags. Athletes not in correct uniform risk being disqualified.

Athletes in the Under 9-16 age groups are invited to participate in the Little Athletics Victoria Relays. The Region Relays will be held at Werribee on Sunday 28 February for the Under 9-12 teams and the State Relay Championships will be held at Casey Fields on Saturday 27 March for the Under 9-12s and Sunday 28 March for the Under 13-16 teams.

They lost two early wickets for not many runs, with Matt Golding (28) and Kobe Heafield (57) building a partnership of 74 to anchor the innings through the middle overs. Ballan had to bowl 1-over at the end of the day, with Kobe Heafield bowling a wicket maiden, leaving the opposition 1 for 0 with 50 overs to bat next weekend.

Derby winner reigns supreme

Potential spilled over into performance at Tabcorp Park Melton on Saturday night as Majestuoso stamped himself as the next trotting superstar with a dominant Group 1 performance.

For Long Forest trainer Andy Gath and reinswoman Kate Gath, the four-year-old conclusively emerged from the shadows of his successful stablemates with a bold frontrunning performance that left the squaregaiting heads of state gasping in his wake and claimed the Schweppes Australasian Trotting Championship.

“Everything went terrific,” Kate Gath told Trots Vision after the Alabar-bred Majestic Son gelding claimed a second career Group 1 to go with his 2019 Victoria Trotters Derby success.

“Twelve months ago when he won the Derby we thought that he was our next top line trotter, then I wasn’t sure for a little while. I thought a couple of his runs – they weren’t bad, just probably weren’t as good as I thought they would be.

“Because he was out of the draw, he always drew impossible positions, but now that he’s back in it, he’s got gate speed, he’s good from the stands, that will go a long way to helping him win races, instead of being in those impossible positions where there’s a good one up front and it’s really hard to get past them.”

He was certainly the complete package at Melton on Saturday night, stepping well from outside the front row of the standing start, advancing outside Drop The Hammer, who looked set to lead until galloping, and soon after Margaret Ruth and Red Hot Tooth followed suit.

While the pack split in three, Majestuoso advanced to the lead ahead of Cruisin Around and there they settled for the long haul home in the 2760-metre classic.

Majestuoso was able to lead without pressure, but began to race keenly with a tick over a lap to go and then when Tough Monarch loomed at the bell it was to become a stamina battle for the high-speed trotter.

But the leader would have all the answers, running under 30 seconds in all of the final four quarters including 28.8 and 28.5 seconds for the second and third quarters that would space the field.

Both long-shot chances Andyou and Well Defined ran on superbly to clear out from higher credentialled rivals Tough Monarch, Red Hot Tooth and McLovin, but the limelight was Majestuoso’s.

“Everything was just playing exactly into our hands like we wanted and he began so well and I thought this is perfect, and when he got keen I was like, ‘yeah, this isn’t great’,” Gath said. “But he actually went better than he’s ever gone, or as good as he’s gone. The last mile was off the clock.”

Majestuoso ran a 2:01.0 mile rate, only marginally outside Monbet’s track record of 1:59.6, set in the 2016 version of this race.

Majestuoso’s last mile of 1:56.9 overshadowed Monbet’s 1:58.6, and is the quickest this race has seen, comparing favourably to wins in 2019 by Savannah Jay Jay (1:57.7), in 2018 by Fabrication (2:00.4), in 2017 by Red Hot Tooth (1:57.1), in 2015 by Flying Isa (1:58.7), in 2014 by My High Expectations (1:58.3), in 2013 by Mister Zion (2:00.3) and in 2011 by Let Me Thru (2:02.5).

“And I thought the track was slow tonight, just a little bit slower than normal, it seems quite heavy, which is good because it’s got good cushioning,” Gath said, before returning to Majestuoso’s times. “But maybe not.”
