Remember to buy a poppy

Photo – Caitlin Bewley By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Yr Swinburne Uni) 2020 is the year many will remember, and most likely want to forget due to COVID-19, however, it is another year to remember our service personnel, past, present and future. People may not be able to gather in large numbers to commemorate Remembrance Day in 2020, but communities can still fall silent at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, to pay tribute to the men and women who served, and died in the line of duty, in WWI and WWII, and of course the formal end of the First World War hostilities on this day in 1918. President of the Bacchus Marsh RSL, Cherrison Lawton, told the Moorabool News only ten people will be able to attend
this year’s local Remembrance Day service on Wednesday 11 November. Much like ANZAC Day, people are being encouraged to participate in a minute’s silence in a COVIDSafe way. “It will be very similar to what people did on ANZAC Day, they will hold their own family services, but of course, it’s a little bit different because people will be working as it’s not a public holiday,” Ms Lawton said. It is not too late to purchase the Remembrance Day poppy either with Ms Lawton saying they have set up COVID safe stalls outside the newsagency and the RSL in Bacchus Marsh. “We weren’t able to raise funds on ANZAC Day due to COVID-19 restrictions, but this time we have our COVIDsafe places to sell poppies.”
Ms Lawton wanted to remind community members to keep safe and plan celebrations in a safe manner to honour and remember those who served on our behalf. “Remembrance Day is very special this year; it’s the 75-year anniversary of the end of WWII, so that’s very significant,” Ms Lawton said. “It’s also over one hundred years since the end of WWI. “But it’s also very significant this year because it’s a time to remember, not only what these men and women fought for, but also holding on tight to what our values are and what we want our values to be.” RSL Victoria and the Shrine of Remembrance social media pages will live stream services at 10:45am, along with ABC radio on Remembrance Day, Wednesday 11 November.
