The session in Ballan last Thursday was meant to inform and reassure locals about AusNet’s Western Transmission Network Project, but it had more Mooraboolites angry than comforted.

Green thumbs needed

By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni) You might think the beautiful roses at Maddingley Park are maintained by Council, but they’re actually kept tidy by a local volunteer group, who desperately need more helpers.

The Friends of Maddingley Park meet at the rose gardens every Wednesday and the third Sunday of each month, and keep the roses looking stunning by pruning, mulching and fertilising the gardens.

Founding member of the Friends of Maddingley Park, Pamela Pinney, said maintaining the roses was a big task for the small group of volunteers.

“We’re all retired…as we’re all getting older it’s getting harder to keep people in our group. We really need to revitalise, I suppose, our membership,” Ms Pinney said.

“I started Friends of Maddingley Park, and our first thing was to put in the memorial garden just inside the main gates on the corner of Taverner and Grant Street. From there we’ve done other works around the park, tidying up and putting garden beds in. The second garden bed is the heritage garden, around the heritage rotunda.

“We’ve probably got 10 to 12 members, on average we’d get eight at most at our major working bees. The other day we only had four. Particularly at pruning time, with the number of roses that we have, it’s fairly intense.

“We have a flexible time from 10 until 1 every third Sunday, but we’ve just added every Wednesday from 10 till 12 for people who maybe can’t come on weekends. But as a group we work out what works for everyone, we’re a friendly group.

“Having more volunteers would make it easier to get through the work, especially pruning.”

Equipment is not required, though the volunteers usually bring their own gloves and secateurs. Enthusiasm is highly valued by the Friends of Maddingley Park, while experience is not required, as the friendly team will happily give gardening advice.

Tractors, fire trucks and utes parked at the football ground displayed signs which echoed the sentiment of the crowd – that the power lines were not welcome and should not go overhead.

Those who wanted information about the project had to line up socially distanced from the people around them and fill in their details for COVID-safe purposes, before asking AusNet representatives their questions and receiving information brochures.

But attendees told the Moorabool News they weren’t happy with the session.

“I asked why they want to put the lines through all these farms, they said it’s the most ‘economical line’. Why tell Photos: Helen Tatchell people there are four possible routes if you’ve already picked one? They’ve got it all stitched up,” Greg said.

“Long-term it’ll be cheaper, they can’t see that…people from Melbourne don’t care, what’s one or two cents extra a kilowatt to put it underground?” Ray asked.

“We’ve lived here all our lives, and so have our parents and grandparents…so many generations, and it’s all going out the door.” multi-generational farmer Kristy said.

Local MP Michaela Settle, and incumbent councillors Paul Tatchell, John Keogh, Jarrod Bingham were all at the session.

“The Moorabool Power Alliance invited me to come along to the consultation today, and it was a good opportunity to hear about the group’s approaches to the EES. It’s critical that we properly assess the alignment and design alternatives thoroughly, to avoid or minimise effects on the community and environment.” Ms Settle told the Moorabool News.

Cr Tatchell was unimpressed.

“Once again the local member’s response was disappointing; you can’t have a dollar each way on these things. Great to see the community out in force reminding governments that country people have had a gutful of being taken for granted with the abuse of the two for one vote out of city MPs. This fight is a long way from over,” Cr Tatchell said.

President of the Moorabool & Central Highlands Power Alliance, Emma Muir, said the turnout was fantastic and the community would stand strong against AusNet’s plan, but “there was a lot of angst and misinformation provided by AusNet about undergrounding, about alignment and scaremongering about compensation”.

The last two Moorabool drop-in sessions will be held at Darley Park, from 2pm–6:30 pm on Wednesday 21 and Thursday 22 October.

Bacchus Marsh Court House: The original sandstone in this court house in Main Street Bacchus Marsh was built in 1858 with sandstone from Matson’s Quarry at Bald Hill. This sandstone was formed from tillite deposited by a series of continental glaciers 285 million years ago.

The great Ice Age at Bacchus Marsh

By Roger Pierson (Geologist) Chair of Coucil Trench COM Our planet looked very different some 285 million years ago than it does now. Back then, a huge land mass, Gondwana, filled the southern hemisphere ocean. Much of the vast land was covered by a thick ice sheet. This was the great ice age.

A section of the land mass, which would much later become the continent of Australia, lay near to the South Pole. Much of this ‘Australian’ section of Gondwana was covered by ice that may have been up to 2km thick.

Over millions of years, the ice-sheet advanced and receded several times as it slowly moved from the south to the north.

This massive, moving, frozen sheet, ploughed across the landscape like a giant bulldozer as it advanced, and dumped immense amounts of rock debris when it melted and receded.

What is the evidence around Bacchus Marsh that indicates involvement in this great ice age?

As the ice advanced, it sheared off features in the landscape.

Rock material, embedded in the ice, dragged across bedrock and left channels and scratches that are obvious today where bedrock is exposed. Examples of such evidence is found in Lerderderg Gorge, Werribee Gorge and near Merrimu Reservoir on so-called glaciated pavements.

When the ice melted and receded, vast amounts of rock carried in the ice was dumped to form beds called moraines.

Examples of such beds are exposed in and downstream of Lerderderg Gorge, in Werribee Gorge, along Korkuperrimul Creek, and on Bald Hill. Activity of faults and down cutting of rivers has led to these modern exposures.

How has it been determined that the great ice age that left evidence near Bacchus Marsh can be dated to some 285 million years ago? Many years of research across the countries that once formed Gondwana has built up a base of findings that support this age.

Fossil evidence, in the form of tiny pollen and spores found in outcrops on the Lerderderg River and on Bald Hill are of species found in rocks from South America, South Africa, India, Madagascar and Antarctica. They all indicate an age around 280 to 290 million years – the great ice age.

Glacial transported rock and ground up particles formed massive deposits. These were pressed into sandstone over millions of years. Quarries were established at Bald Hill and at Goodmans Creek in the 1850s to cut sandstone blocks for building. The Bacchus Marsh Court House, Stone Villa and the sandstone bridge over the Djerriwarrah Creek east of Bacchus Marsh, are made from glacier derived sandstone.

Bail with a curfew and $3000 surety

By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Yr Swinburne Uni) After leaving graffiti in a train carriage, assaulting a police officer, and fleeing on foot, a 21-year old Ballan man has been released on bail into the care of his mother.

Tom McConnell appeared via video link to make an application for bail in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrate’s on Friday 9 October.

Prosecutor, Leading Senior Constable Jones, provided a summary of McConnell’s offending to the court, which occurred on August 18 this year.

The court heard the defendant entered a train at the Ballan train station heading towards Ballarat.

The prosecution said the train conductor observed the accused in a carriage, and when he later returned to said carriage, noticed graffiti tags near where McConnell had been seated.

Police were notified and attended the Ballarat train station.

At approximately 1:20am, the accused left the train carriage and walked towards Lydiard Street where two police officers attempted to intercept McConnell.

“One of the police officers held out a hand towards McConnell, which he slapped away. He struck the other police office in the chest and fled on foot,” Prosecutor Jones said.

The struck officer sustained a fracture to her wrist.

McConnell was later located at his Ballan home on October 9 where he was arrested.

Police located clothing which identified the accused from the night of the offending.

The defendant was on bail at the time of the offending.

McConnell’s mother provided a statement to the court, saying she would be willing to call the informant if her son was to breach his bail.

“If I were to bail him with stringent conditions, you would report it and offer a surety?” Magistrate Kumar asked McConnell’s mother.

“Yes,” she replied.

“He has a limited history, and his mother is a convincing witness.

With stringent conditions, the risk will be mitigated,” Magistrate Kumar said.

McConnell’s bail application was granted with stringent conditions that included a $3,000 surety and he would need to reside at his Ballan address with an 8pm - 6am curfew, and not to use drugs of dependence.

Deadline to vote this Friday Voters enrolled in the Moorabool Shire Council election are reminded they have until 6pm Friday 23 October to return their completed ballot material.

Completed ballot material must be posted before final local mail clearance times. Voters should check their local mail clearance times, as this may be earlier than 6 pm or earlier in the week. Alternatively, voters can hand-deliver their ballot material by the 6 pm deadline to the Election Manager at the election office located at Shop 1, 2 Graham Street, Bacchus Marsh.

Voters who still haven’t received their ballot pack should call the election office immediately on 1300 122 914 to arrange a replacement.

Extended hours for voters to hand-deliver their completed ballot material apply from 9am to 8pm on Thursday 22 October and 9am to 6pm on Friday 23 October.

Voting is compulsory for voters who were on the State roll for this general election at 4 pm Friday 28 August and Councilenrolled voters are encouraged to vote.

State-enrolled voters who don’t vote may be fined.

Teen arrested outside school

By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Yr Swinburne Uni) An 18-year-old man alleged to be impersonating a police officer, was arrested out the front of a Bacchus Marsh High School last week, a source told the Moorabool News.

The man was reported to be wearing a vest and police scanners and loitered out the front of Bacchus Marsh College on Tuesday 13 October, before police were

contacted to attend the scene at approximately 2pm.

The reliable source said the high school was not locked down, the incident did not involve the school in any way, and the man was arrested pending further enquiry.

The source said the 18-year-old appeared to be suffering from a mental illness and was subsequently taken to a psychiatric facility. He was not drug or alcohol affected, as previously reported by another online outlet.

It wasn’t Valentine’s day

Unaware of licence suspension

By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Yr Swinburne Uni) A man was intercepted by police doing routine registration checks a month before he was due to be relicenced, a court has heard.

Mark Ives entered a plea of guilty to driving charges in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrate’s court on Friday 9 October.

Police lawyer Paul Thomas told the court the offending occurred on April 14 at around 2:20pm.

It was on this date the 53-year old was travelling east along Exford road, Parwan when police were conducting registration checks.

Ives was intercepted and provided police with his licence, which was found to be suspended. Ives wasn’t due to be relicenced until May 14, a gap of one month.

During the field interview, Ives made no admissions to driving whilst disqualified,

saying he was unaware his licence was suspended.

“He said if he knew he wouldn’t have driven,” Mr Thomas told the court.

Clara Harper, Ives’ lawyer, said her client wasn’t aware he was unlicensed at the time of the offending, but accepts he received the letter.

“He is being treated for arthritis so is not currently working as a truck driver,” Harper said. “He needs his licence to be able to drive to those doctor’s appointments.”

Ms Harper said Ives accepts responsibility but is seeking his licence not be further suspended.

Magistrate Bob Kumar said his intention was to issue a fine and not to interfere with his licence further.

“Your last appearance in court was in 2008, there is a substantial gap and that’s why I’m imposing a fine and won’t be interfering with your licence,” Magistrate Kumar said.

Ives was convicted and fined $500.

When members of the Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade are called to respond to an incident, it’s usually to put out a fire or help victims of an accident.

But last Monday night, they had quite a unique situation to deal with – an overly curious ferret stuck in a home’s drainage system.

Valentine the ferret had already managed to wriggle his way out of the shower drain, but rather than wriggling out of the pipes and freeing himself, Valentine had gone further down, into the house’s wastewater pipes.

Firefighters on the scene were worried that Valentine would continue down into the town sewer through the house’s plumbing system, so they acted quickly to block access out of the house via the service inspection point of the property.

Thankfully one of the Fire Brigade members knew local plumber Gareth Ryan, who lent the firefighters a drain inspection camera.

The firefighters soon spotted Valentine with the camera, as a pair of glowing eyes stared into the lens.

The clever ferret followed the camera back to where access had been made at the service inspection point, but he was still 1.5 metres down a 10cm wide pipe. The firefighters had to dig around the pipe and remove its top section to make Valentine’s escape easier.

Using some food scraps and a mop, fire brigade members were able to coax Valentine out hanging onto a pair of firefighter braces.

In total, the rescue took around 90 minutes.

The Bacchus Marsh Fire Brigade thanked local plumber Gareth Ryan from Green Pipes Plumbing, who quickly responded to the call for assistance and kindly donated his time and services.

Burgers a winner

By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni) They were snapped up too fast for most locals to get their hands on, as a Ballan fundraiser sold 125 boxes of Wagyu burger patties in two days.

The patties were donated by award-winning local farm Sher Wagyu, with all proceeds going to Moorabool & Central Highlands Power Alliance and Ballan Football Netball Club.

At first, fundraiser co-ordinator Lori Conroy advertised 100 boxes, with 42 patties in each, on social media.

The patties sold like hotcakes, so Sher Wagyu donated another 25 boxes, which quickly went too. In all, 125 boxes – 5,250 patties – were sold in just two days.

Ms Conroy said she was stunned by the amount of orders she’d received in such a short time.

“We posted on social media, and within two days, they were all gone. I’ve had a few calls since and had to tell people they were all sold out,” she told the Moorabool News.

“I thought it’d take at least a couple of weeks to sell them, but no, they were very popular. A big thank you to the community for their support…everyone was willing to jump in and help out, so thank you.

Ms Conroy said she “actually sort of fell into the role” by organising it.

“It was David O’Hanlon and Vicki Sher who started it, and I became the order taker and fell in that way,” she said.

The boxes were sold for $100 each, which works out to be $2.38 a patty – almost half their retail price.

Vicki Sher, along with husband Nick, run Sher Wagyu and told the Moorabool News the two groups receiving the proceeds were close to her heart.

“As farmers and landowners in Ballan, we will be potentially affected by the Ausnet Transmission Tower project. If it goes ahead in its current form of 85m towers, it will be a terrible outcome for the whole region,” she said.

way to raise some funds to help fight this project. We have also been involved with the footy club as sponsors and our sons are past players, and thought it would be a great idea to join forces to raise funds for both groups at same time.

“We have always supported local and state-wide fundraisers and will continue to do so.”

The Moorabool & Central Highlands Power Alliance will receive 80 per cent of the $12,500 raised, while the Ballan Football Netball Club will receive the remaining 20 per cent.

With schools back to in-person or face to face learning for Term 4, Moorabool Shire Council is encouraging Mooraboolites to take part in the Walk to School program.

With sports such as football and netball suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 2020 has been a hard year for kids to stay fit - but walking, riding, scooting or skating to school are great ways to keep active.

Karate still kicking

By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni) It has been a tough year for sports clubs across Victoria, but the local Shindo Karate club has fought to keep kids fit and active.

Wayne and Annie Noble, who run the Bacchus Marsh and Melton chapter of Shindo Karate, have remained committed to their students throughout the 2020 pandemic.

During the height of lockdown, when the dojo was closed, 12 classes a week were held online on Zoom, with some classes having over 50 households in attendance.

Mr Noble told the Moorabool News that adapting had been a challenge, but soon online classes had become the norm.

“We ran Zoom classes basically from day one. As soon as when we realised what was happening, that was something we looked at, the option of running them online. We were running Zoom classes up to pretty much every night at one point, Monday to Friday,” Mr Noble said.

“We’re still doing Zoom as well, because we have a lot of students from Melton, Eynesbury and other metro areas.”

To keep students excited despite doing karate from home, the Nobles introduced themed weeks, such as ‘bring a pet week’, ‘superhero week’ and ‘bright colours week’. One week, parents were even invited to train alongside their children.

Responsible driver has charges dismissed

“I was told if I was a couple of metres closer to the sign, I wouldn’t have been booked,” a man has told a court after he was caught speeding.

Peter Guida entered a plea of guilty to driving offences in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates court on Friday 9 October, before Magistrate Bob Kumar.

Police lawyer Paul Thomas provided a summary of his offending to the court, which occurred on January 11 this year.

The defendant was travelling south on Ballan – Daylesford road near Spargo Creek at a fast rate of speed with the court hearing the alleged speed was 93km/h in an 80km/h zone.

Police intercepted Guida and he provided a current licence but told police the reason for his excessive speed was because he was “speeding up to the 100km/h zone.”

The Geelong man presented an excellent driving record to the court, saying he travelled on that road multiple times a week.

“I was told that if I was a couple of metres closer to the speed sign I wouldn’t have been booked,” Guida said. “I was surprised to be done so close to the sign.”

Magistrate Kumar said the defendant has a good record and “you’re a responsible driver”.

“You’ve been driving for 27 years and have no priors.”

Magistrate Kumar dismissed the charges.

Moor art to come

By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Yr Swinburne Uni) Online events are becoming common during COVID-19, with a local organization holding an art exhibition through their website.

This year’s Grow West Biodiversity Photographic Exhibition was the first event to be held online through Moor Art space at the Lerderderg Library.

The free community exhibition space supports local artists and community groups, and the current climate of COVID-19 forced events to move online.

Library Programs Coordinator Kristie Seketa told the Moorabool News the success of the Photographic Exhibition was a good indication that online events could work while under pandemic related restrictions.

“The Grow West Biodiversity Photographic Exhibition was our first exhibition online. It celebrated the beauty and wonder of the local environment, showcasing an amazing array of animals and plants of the upper Werribee Catchment,” she said.

The event was held during September and saw over 418-page views. Local photographers Bernie McRitchie, David Whelan and Chris Lindorff contributed their work to the show.

said the restrictions limited exhibition views because people couldn’t physically be in the library.

“In normal times, we would usually have around 2,000 people a week coming through the library doors, not always coming in for exhibitions, but they have an opportunity to view exhibitions when they come in.”

Grow West Biodiversity Photographic Exhibition may have been the first online event for the Lerderderg Library, but it certainly won’t be the last.

“The remaining planned exhibitions

have taken the opportunity to move online,” she said. “And following on from this exhibition, in the past month, we have held children’s illustration workshops and our first virtual BacchChat.

“In November we’ll run the Art of Empowerment – an exhibition held by Djerriwarrh Health Service and local artists.

“And coming up next week, in time for Earth Science Week, is a video exhibition on ‘The Great Ice Age in Bacchus Marsh,” Ms Seketa said.

Judging a book by its cover To celebrate Children’s Book Week, Moorabool Libraries is hosting a ‘book cover recreation’ competition, with six bookshop e-vouchers able to be won.

Kids who live or study in Moorabool, from kinder to Grade 6, are encouraged to submit their photos showing their recreation of a favourite book cover.

Creativity is also encouraged, with props, people and even digital programs allowed to be used, to make the image look even more like the book cover it’s replicating.

Entries will be divided into three categories – Junior (Kinder to Grade 2), Middle (Grade 3 to Grade 4) and Senior (Grade 5 to Grade 6). One winner in each category will be awarded a $100 bookshop e-voucher, and one runner-up from each will be awarded a $50 voucher.

Public voting to decide the winners will be open from Monday 19 to Thursday 22 October.

Winners of the Moorabool Libraries Book Cover Recreation Competition will be announced before the end of October.

Sewer spills present a risk to the environment and cost a lot to fix and a local water authority has identified over 100 blockages since the start of the year.

Western Water is using Artificial Intelligence to monitor its network and identify areas where sewer spills happen most frequently.

Since January, Western Water has cleared more than 100 blockages, with Bacchus Marsh, Darley, Maddingley, Melton and Kurunjang identified as some of the most affected communities.

Western Water’s Chief Operating Officer, Graham Holt said blockages are costly and cause significant harm to the environment, so it’s important to invest in new monitoring technologies.

“The technology, combined with historical data, helps us predict the high incidence areas,” Mr Holt said.

“As a result, we’re monitoring those areas more closely”.

Mr Holt said that most blockages are caused by customers throwing fats down the sink, flushing something other than toilet paper or planting invasive trees near pipe networks.

“At Western Water, we’re focussed on keeping bills affordable, and we hope customers will help us meet this goal by taking care of what they put down their sinks and toilets.

“Now we know the high-risk regions, we’re reaching out to these communities to do the right thing. What you flush can impact your entire neighbourhood,” he said.

Theft, drugs and guilty plea

Stealing items from a charity bin found a Werribee woman in custody pending bail.

27-year-old Christine Kakoschke appeared in the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates court October 9 before Magistrate Bob Kumar.

The Werribee woman attended the Bacchus Marsh Magistrates court to apply for bail, but soon entered a plea of guilty after the charges were resolved.

Police Lawyer Paul Thomas provided the court with a summary of Kakoschke’s offending which occurred the morning of October 9.

At around 1:45am, the accused attended a supermarket carpark located on Young and Gell Streets and stole a bag from the charity bin that contained around $50 worth of items.

Kakoschke then left the carpark and attended a Gisborne road petrol station on foot, and after leaving, police located and intercepted her.

The accused then placed a folded sock in one of the bags, which police noticed contained eight yellow capsules and half a bag of crushed white tablets, which she said were Xanax.

Police lawyer Thomas said Kakoschke was subsequently arrested and conveyed to the Bacchus Marsh Police Station.

When interviewed by police the accused said she “didn’t know what to say” and that the “Xanax wasn’t hers”.

The accused’s lawyer, Tim Tyler, told the court of his client’s intellectual disability and previous drug problem.

“Subject to her age and vulnerability, and despite her lengthy record, these offences are not at the high end of offending,” Mr Tyler said.

Magistrate Kumar convicted and fined Kakoschke a sum of $750.

EPA continues to ignore Council

Sesquicentennial for past Shire

By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni) It will be 150 years since Bacchus Marsh was proclaimed a Shire next January, and Council is organising a photo gallery to mark the occasion.

Kenneth Scobie Clarke arrived in Bacchus Marsh back in 1836, with Captain Bacchus arriving and settling on the Lerderderg River in 1838, where the Bacchus Marsh Golf Club is now located.

From 1862 to 1871, the local government body was called the Bacchus Marsh and Maddingley District Road Board, which managed local road and bridge construction.

It wasn’t until the end of 1870 that Bacchus Marsh and the surrounding area earned a high enough revenue to qualify as a Shire. On the 23rd of January 1871, Bacchus Marsh Shire was officially proclaimed.

The Last Chairman of the Bacchus Marsh and Maddingley District Road Board, Mr George Gibson Paterson, became the first President of the Bacchus Marsh Shire.

The Bacchus Marsh Shire existed from 1871 until 1994, when the Bacchus Marsh area joined Moorabool Shire.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, the Bacchus Marsh & District Historical Society cannot meet in person and are not able to do anything for the 150th anniversary, but has kindly offered to help Moorabool Council in any way it can, and also provided the historical information above.

Historical photos and stories can be submitted at moorabool. vic.gov.au/forms/celebrate-150-years-the-shire-bacchusmarsh. If you wish to submit your piece of history, do so before the November 16 deadline.

Council will make all submitted documents available for public view throughout the month of January 2021.

In 1994 the Shire of Bacchus Marsh was amalgamated with the Shire of Ballan and parts of the Shires of Bungaree and Werribee to form the Shire of Moorabool. Bacchus Marsh and its suburbs form the largest settlement in Moorabool Shire.

From Rural to Urban Bacchus Marsh grew rapidly from the 1990s.

Moorabool Shire Council has learned of a modification made to Maddingley Brown Coal’s Environment Management Plan (EMP) – but only after the final decision was already made.

Last Monday, Council was informed that the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) has given the green light to MBC to modify and upgrade its containment facility design.

Ravenhall and a Bulla site remain as alternative candidates to store the soil, with no decision made yet by Planning Minister Richard Wynne.

“We’re told this does not mark the final decision of where the contaminated soil will be dumped,” Council CEO Derek Madden said.

“But we are still not a part of the planning process, and we should be.”

“We, as a Council, and our community, have been kept out of the loop throughout the entire process. This is another example of us not being told what is happening. Our community has been left in the dark on all elements, which is a real failure of the State Government to our residents.”

Mr Madden said Council had still not been informed on what works will take place on the Avenue of Honour, after the Heritage Advisory Council granted MBC a permit exemption to do roadworks on The Avenue.

In its media statement announcing the amendment, the EPA said that its approval of MBC’s EMP and the amendment to the containment facility design did not necessarily mean the soil would be stored there.

“EPA assessed the plans for potential environmental impacts, such as runoff, odour, and potential land, surface water and ground water risks. The approval of an EMP does not mark the final decision on where the spoil will be sent,” the EPA statement said.

“Under Government regulations the owner of a site bidding to receive TBM [tunnel boring machine] spoil must develop an Environment Management Plan (EMP) and comply with specific conditions including constructing an appropriate containment system and managing spoil appropriately so risks are controlled.”

“The health of the local community and the environment is our first priority and these Environment Management Plans will ensure they are protected,” EPA Executive Director of Regulatory Standards, Assessments and Permissioning Tim Eaton added.

Now 781 elderly in Victoria dead because of Andrews decision for private security, although they all claim they know nothing. Our local ALP member Steve McGhie who replaced a previous member who we all know claimed thousands for living in two places.

Steve McGhie is the new boy on the block and has gone underground about toxic waste we will get. The Federal member Catherine King also gone underground, so basically not her problem.

We can only hope the families of 781 Victorians who lost members of their family see who pays for this incompetent cabal who has been leading Victoria for the past 6 years.

Whilst I neither support nor disagree on the subject in question, nonetheless I have my own opinion on the matter. Is that ok? Does this make me divisive? If I don’t agree with someone who is championing or promoting a particular cause, does that make me right and them wrong or me wrong and them right? We are all entitled to have an opinion and, as we live in a democratic country, we should be able to voice it without vilification or derision. There is an old saying that

I am still waiting to find out any meaningful information about this clandestine process used to facilitate the monstrosity.

By Caitlin Bewley (3rd Yr Swinburne Uni) Local primary school students participated in a ‘moo-vement’ that teaches today’s youth the ins-and-outs of the Australian dairy industry.

Bacchus Marsh Grammar year sixes participated in Dairy Australia’s Picasso Cow initiative and focused on the sustainability of dairy farming.

Picasso Cows is an initiative run by Dairy Australia and has been conducted for more than a decade and challenges primary school aged students to decorate a life-sized fibreglass cow.

Coordinator of the Staughton Vale campus, Bryce Durham, said the school’s arts department suggested the idea to decorate the cow.

“The students were very excited for the school to receive a life like cow and have the opportunity to learn about the Dairy Industry.

“It was a bit of a collaborative approach between the arts department and our campus,” Mr Durham said.

“One of the teachers read about it and saw the cow artwork from other schools and contacted Dairy Australia, and through the farm campus, the program came to us.”

The Staughton Vale campus, located 20-minutes south-west of the Maddingley campus, is a new farm school which has been around for about two years.

Mr Durham said this initiative tied into the type of learning that goes on at Staughton Vale daily.

“We were trying to find a program to tie in a little bit, and this was one that came up. We thought it could link in, and although we aren’t a dairy farm at our campus, we thought it might tap into some areas we could explore and see if we could get any interest from the kids.

“Our students looked at the milk making process, how farms were set up to manage dairy production, and then looking at technology in the future focusing on how we can look after the environment along with the milk making process,” he said.

When asked if he thought the students enjoyed the experience working with Dairy Australia, he said it had been a great experience and the students have learnt a lot along the way.

“It’s been a good experience and they’ve provided a lot of resources for our students, making it easier for them to access video and images of different processes.

“It’s been challenging not having the students face-to-face, so for them to have an online hub to access information and knowledge, it’s been one of the most beneficial parts of the program,” Mr Durham said.

The life-sized cow mural will be located at the Staughton Vale campus.

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The 2020/21 Track & Field season kicked off on Saturday morning. After a long period of shutdown due to the COVID-19 restrictions, the kids were bursting with energy and it was so pleasing to see the smiles on their faces and the enjoyment of being back enjoying sport and mixing with friends.

The Centre welcomed back returning members with an amazing 40 trial athletes competing for their first time. It was very rewarding for all the long hours of meetings, either with Little Athletics Victoria, the Council or the Committee preparing for the long-awaited return of little athletics.

Bridie Shanahan (Dolphins) broke the first record for the season, throwing 28.63m in the Girls Under 15 Javelin bettering the previous record by 4.5 metres.

This Saturday (24 October) will be the Official Season Opening. This year due to restrictions special guests will be unable to attend so the opening will be live streamed on the BMLAC facebook page. The 2020/21 Centre Captains will also be announced.

Training for registered members is on Thursday’s at Masons Lane Reserve. This week the Under 6-7 will be 4.30pm; Under 8-10s at 5pm with both groups doing long jump & throws.

The Under 11-16s will be learning how to set up block and starts from 5-6pm.

Lions off to winning start

By Todd Whelan Darley Cricket Club REIGNING BCA Premiers Darley have successfully begun their title defence with a hard fought 48-run win over Golden Point at Darley Park last Saturday.

In overcast conditions the Lions were sent into bat as star opener Danza Hyatt wasted little time reminding opposition bowling attacks just who is ‘king’ of this competition with willow in hand. The former West Indian international and leading run scorer from last season belted five sixers on his way to a match winning 72.

Madushanka Ekanayake, known more for his exploits with the ball, relished his promotion in the batting order to number six and was crucial in aiding the Lions to amass a score of 9/208 after 50 overs. “Eka” came to the crease after the loss of Hyatt, with the game evenly poised at 4/126. His cameo knock of 42 came from just 30 balls including two fours and two sixes. Lions Captain Bradley Barnes played the anchor role with a patient 19 (63), ensuring there would be no loss of wicket at his end while Hyatt and Ekanayake did the damage at the other. Top order batsmen Anthony Taylor (18), Drew Locke (12) and to a lesser degree Ryan Ali (7) all made starts but were unable to go on with it.

At the break, the Lions were all about self-motivation in the absence of Coach Brian Wheelahan who is renowned for his verbal planning and encouragement at every break. Wheelahan, who lives in Melton remains subject to metropolitan Covid-19 restrictions and cannot be at the club until such conditions are eased. Hence there would be no comment from the Premiership Coach in the aftermath.

Despite being marginally in front at the halfway mark with runs on the board, it would still ask for an even spread of contributors from a Lions bowling attack ‘first up’ to get the job done on the back of a limited preparation.

The visitors looked well and truly in the hunt early at 1/72 before the Lions slower bowlers tightened the screws taking four wickets and inflating the run rate required in the process. With the game now slipping away from Golden Point with the score at 5/132, there was still the prized wicket of former Lions batsman Lachie Herring to be taken. Batting at four and with an inside knowledge of the playing wicket that runs through the blood, Herring was determined to hang in. While his 42 (55) was stoic, the same couldn’t be said for his partners at the other end. Herring later became Ekanayake’s third victim and the eighth wicket to fall, still 51 runs shy of the target. Game over.

Hasith Wickramasinghe highlighted his resilience with 2/30 from his 10 overs. Add three catches and a run out into the equation and ‘Hasi’ had played a vital role. His first ball duck with the bat earlier, now well and truly behind him.

Confidence restored.

The Lions can take plenty out of their effort in the field, taking eight catches and a run out before Golden Point’s innings came to an end at 9/160. The win was just the kickstart to the new season the Lions were after as three new faces were brought into the line-up from last seasons Grand Final. Drew Locke, Dayle Locke and Alan Steenholdt replaced Mitch Ward (hamstring), Harry Killoran (UK) and Rammatullah Khwaja (Metro).

Saturday was the first of six one-day games scheduled before the Christmas break.
