Medal for valour By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni)

A WWII veteran has become the latest Moorabool resident to be awarded with the Commemorative Medallion introduced in July, a first for the township of Ballan.

Eric Saltor was born in Scottsdale on the 7 November 1922, the eldest of 11 children. He now lives in the aged care facility at Ballan District Health & Care (BDH&C).

Mr Saltor’s daughter and son-in-law applied on his behalf for a medal and certificate recognising his service and contribution to the war effort.

Mr Saltor enlisted in the armed forces in 1944 and saw active service until 1948. He served in Papua New Guinea, then in Japan as part of the Peace Corps, later enlisting to fight in Korea, serving there until 1953. Mr Saltor moved to New South Wales and volunteered at the Historical Flight Museum, helping restore the planes which are his great love.

In early September, residents and staff at BDH&C held an intimate internal commemoration, where Mr Saltor was presented with the medal and certificate in recognition of his service. Like many ex-servicemen, Mr Saltor didn’t talk about his time in the armed forces until later in life. His son and daughter are very proud of their dad’s service and “contribution to our freedom”. Mr Saltor, in his 98th year, is a highly respected, gentle man who enjoys a chat with BDH&C staff and fellow residents. He enjoys aircraft modelling and watching documentaries. The Commemorative Medallion was first announced by Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Darren Chester on the 29 July this year, to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II on 15 August.
