It is a disease many may not have heard of and one Bacchus Marsh woman is planning on making it a household name. Abby Grech has started a social media page ‘Art for our Boys’ to help in the search for a cure. Ms Grech told the Moorabool News she joined the fight against DMD and started Art for Our Boys because of her cousin Mason. Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) affects 1 in 3,500 newborn boys every year and, is the most common form of Muscular Dystrophy in children. It rarely affects girls, but they can carry and pass on the gene. “I was inspired to start Art for Our Boys because of my beautiful little cousin. He has Duchenne and he’s only four years old…this is the biggest hurdle our family unit has had to face, and I wanted to do something to show support,” Ms Grech said. “He’s such a funny, caring little boy, and I just want to give him the best chance at a long and healthy life.” With current standards of care, people with Duchenne can live to their early 30s and beyond – but most are unable to walk by the age of 12. Ms Grech is currently living in New Zealand, making artwork and selling it online with 100 per cent of the proceeds going to Save Our Sons Duchenne Foundation, the premier Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy charity in Australia. COVID-19 has meant she is stuck in New Zealand, despite most of Art for Our Boys’ support coming from Australia, which Ms Grech says has made things difficult. “It’s been a bit challenging with orders, considering most of my following is from Australia. I’ve had to leave some of the logistical things to the lovely kind-hearted people who have donated their own art pieces to me. People have been amazing in supporting the cause. I’m really excited to see where it goes,” she said. “It’s been really amazing being able to pair something I’m passionate about with helping a cause so close to my heart.” World Duchenne Awareness Day is Monday 7 September, with organisations around the world working to raise awareness of the condition. If you would like to donate or buy a piece of artwork in support of the fight against Duchenne muscular dystrophy, visit the Art for our Boys Facebook page.
