Masking the virus
Staying safe and following the mandatory mask/face covering regulations, are Ballan residents (L-R) Ian Erwin and Ray Meadows. Photo â Helen Tatchell By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni) Last week you could count on one hand the amount of people wearing a face mask, however as of midnight last Sunday, you will need a calculator. Premier Daniel Andrews has now enforced that masks will be mandatory for all Victorians when out of the home.
Anyone who refuses to wear a mask or face covering can be fined $200 by Victoria Police. Children under 12 years of age, people with
medical conditions that would be affected by wearing a mask, and people doing strenuous exercise are not required to wear a mask.
Last Thursday it was also enforced parts of regional Victoria including Moorabool, Greater Geelong, Surf Coast, Golden Plains, Colac-Otway and the Borough of Queenscliffe, will not be allowed visitors in their homes. No weddings or funerals will be allowed. They can still visit restaurants and cafes, attend community sport and visit gyms.
Premier Andrews said the new rules would help flatten the curve without causing much impact on jobs in regional Victoria. âItâs inconvenient, itâs challenging, butâŚitâs something we can do in regional Victoria without causing significant economic cost but, getting a really significant public health benefit.â he said.
Member for Melton Steve McGhie, has urged Moorabool residents to âcomply with the Chief Health Officerâs adviceâ and âwear a face maskâ.
A Moorabool Council spokesperson told
the Moorabool News all Council staff would be wearing masks, and Mayor Cr
David Edwards is asking all Moorabool
residents, âto follow the State Governmentâs requirements.â
Wearing a mask or face covering item in
public is a simple way to lessen the impact of COVID-19 on any community and, will help to flatten the curve.
