C’mon, ‘Bacchus Up’
By Lachlan Ellis (3rd Yr Deakin Uni) In these uncertain times, community-based food relief program Bacchus Up to Pay it Forward (BUTPIF) has relaunched to assist the needy of Moorabool Shire.
First launched in 2015 by Bacchus Marsh volunteer Judy D’Attoma, the program was temporarily put on hold, but has recently restarted with the inclusion of ‘food is free’ initiatives in the Moorabool Municipal Health and Wellbeing Plan. The BUTPIF program will likely form an important safety net for those requiring emergency food relief in the coming

months, with the COVID-19 pandemic, not to mention the planned dialling back of the JobKeeper and JobSeeker programs in September, likely to increase the strain on local food banks and charities.
Eleven businesses in Darley and Bacchus Marsh allow BUTPIF recipients to redeem their $10 vouchers, including a bakery, butcher, fruit and vegetable supplier, cafés, and takeaway venues. These businesses are then reimbursed from donations given to BUTPIF. Donation boxes are located at Darley Bakehouse, Bottlemart Railway Liquor Station and Lerderderg Library, and over 40 other businesses. More locations accepting donations for BUTPIF can be found on Bacchus Up to Pay it Forward’s social
media pages. As thanks for their kindness, BUTPIF promotes businesses online that accept vouchers and donations. Judy D’Attoma said while COVID-19 had stopped committee meetings from taking place, BUTPIF has big plans.
“We want to expand because we know things are going to get pretty tough. That way we have more availability for food and vouchers that people can access,” Ms D’Attoma told the Moorabool News. “We want to be able to cater for what’s about to come.”
In the last financial year, over 230 BUTPIF vouchers have been redeemed. Vouchers can be requested from Cafs, St. Andrew’s Uniting Church in Bacchus Marsh, and Bacchus Marsh Baptist Church.
