Dirt dug on past

The time capsule that was buried in 1976, was retrieved last Wednesday at Rotary Park in Bacchus Marsh with Rotarians (L-R) Lindsay Arnold, Alan Morton and Donna Martin. By Helen Tatchell It has taken a backhoe, a crowbar and a fair bit of elbow grease to remove a thick layer of concrete housing a time capsule from a bygone era. The year was 1976 when a time capsule was filled in an empty Carlton United Brewery keg and buried, 3rd October, at Rotary Park in Bacchus Marsh, and dug up on Wednesday 15 July 2020, 44-years later. So, what’s inside? According to a notice of the day, the time capsule was sealed on Saturday 3 July 1976 and contains a variety of envelopes. Residents were encouraged to buy an envelope that varied in size, for $2, $5 or $10 and could include letters from mums, dads and grandparents to their children with a photograph or tape cassette, even a lock of hair. Clubs and societies could list their current office-bearers, group or team photographs, balance sheets or club bulletin.

Funds raised from the sale of the envelopes, “will be utilised by Rotary to sponsor community development projects’, the flyer read. And let’s not forget the three bottles of ‘Bacchus Dry Red’ that was carefully lowered into the concrete pipe pit back in 1976 with baling twine and, extracted just as carefully. The label read, ‘A subtle blend of selected wines bottled by the Community Service Committee, Bacchus Marsh Rotary Club 1975’. Today’s President Donna Martin said it was an exciting time for Rotary. “We cannot wait to open it,” she said. “Lindsay Arnold and Alan Morton have done an amazing job and it hasn’t been a five-minute job to organise the digging up of the capsule.” Moorabool Mayor David Edwards said he was also excited to see what is in the capsule. “It just shows the cooperation between

organisations such as Rotary and Council and should possibly be something we should do a bit more of. This could be the start of a reinvigoration between Council and Rotary,” he said. Lindsay Arnold said his father was a Rotarian at the time and is in the photo on the day of placement, along with his mother Ruby and sister Kaye. “I was amazed at the effort the Rotarians went to, too dig, seal and place in the beer barrel container,” he said. “I am looking forward to the letters that were written and what surprises might appear. There will be a lot of history renewed.” And what happens to all these envelopes once the capsule is opened later this year? “Your envelope will then be delivered or posted to whom it is addressed”, the 1976 notice read.
