We love The Moon Mag. And publishing 45 editions, during market madness, personal pivots, and global volatility, is something we’re incredibly proud of. That’s no small feat. It’s a massive milestone. A library of insights, stories, strategy, and soul that stands as a time capsule of this wild space we’re all part of, they will stay live and active.

But right now, the energy needs to shift.

We’re doubling down on what’s producing the most impact, traction, and personal fulfilment. 1. A Personal Journey I still remember my first transaction back in late 2016, the nervous click of “send”, followed by an entirely new world unfolding before me. At the time, I was a part-time moderator for a ‘’DeFi’’ project (can’t even recall the name anymore) and just received my first payment. Today, nearly a decade later, I am proud that I still have contacts with those investors in the community, those same passionate degens that worked alongside me, and most importantly, my perception of all things has shifted completely.

My journey with crypto has been one of constant learning, celebrating breakthroughs, learning a new skill, weathering different cycles in the market, and questioning every piece of information on what truly drives value in a decentralised protocol. What started as a fascination with the idea of digital scarcity has grown into a conviction that blockchain technology and Web3 can empower individuals far beyond mere speculation.

In this issue’s opinion piece, I want to share some of the lessons crypto taught me in 2024, highlight the trends I believe that will define 2025, and offer a forward-looking vision for where we might be headed by 2030. I hope that these reflections spark both excitement and healthy debate, as the next chapter of cryptocurrencies is getting built.

2. Achievements and Lessons 2.1 Institutional Adoption and Market Milestones One of the most exciting developments of 2024 was the solidification of institutional interest in crypto. When the combined market capitalisation of all crypto assets topped $2.9 trillion in November, it wasn’t just a headline or a wake-up call. It signified a deeper shift. Major asset managers launched spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs across Europe and the US, granting everyday investors exposure to crypto assets through familiar channels.

Pension funds and insurance companies quietly allocated a small sliver of their balance sheets to these ETFs, tacitly acknowledging crypto’s maturing role in a diversified portfolio.

What impressed me most was not the scale of those numbers, but the tenor of institutional discourse, something that before COVID no one could imagine. Where once “cryptocurrencies” were greeted with scepticism, now CEOs speak of on-chain data, tokenised real-world assets, and programmable finance with genuine enthusiasm. But yes, this shift didn’t happen overnight. It is the result of years of proving crypto’s technical soundness and regulatory compliance. And the lesson should be clear for everyone: patient, incremental progress wins the day.

2.2 Regulatory Developments on the Global Stage Regulation remains crypto’s perennial foil and yet, in 2024, it took steps towards clarity rather than confusion. The EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regime moved closer to implementation, offering projects a clear path for token approvals and licensing. In the US, the SEC and CFTC accelerated their dialogue, culminating in joint guidance distinguishing between security tokens and commodity tokens. Meanwhile, Asian hubs like Singapore and Dubai rolled out “crypto sandboxes”, enabling startups to test innovation under regulatory supervision.

While some measures still feel overbearing, for instance, onerous “travel rules” for on-chain payments, the overall trajectory is encouraging. Regulators are waking up to the realisation that outright bans do more harm than good, driving activity underground rather than protecting consumers.

The key takeaway for me?

The most successful jurisdictions will be those that strike the right balance between consumer safeguards and pro-innovation frameworks.

2.3 Technological Breakthroughs and Hurdles 2024 wasn’t all smooth sailing, though. We saw major protocol upgrades, like Ethereum’s Dencun Sharding rollout and the launch of phase-one of Bitcoin’s Lightning venerable, delivering genuine improvements in throughput and fees. Layer-2 solutions continued their inexorable rise, with zk-rollups achieving sub-$0.01 transaction costs and throughput in the thousands of TPS. Yet challenges still remain. Network congestion spikes still send fees soaring, user interfaces across wallets and dApps can feel clunky, and cross-chain bridges came under fresh security scrutiny after several hacks. The most obvious lesson is that true scaling requires holistic attention: better consensus designs, lighter client implementations, and robust security audits.

Through all this, I’ve come to appreciate a simple truth that tech alone won’t save us or progress the space further. We need better developer tooling, standards for on-chain data formats, and most of all, a continued focus on the end-user experience.

3. Emerging Trends Shaping 2025 and Beyond As we look ahead to 2025, the crypto market is poised for another wave of transformation.

The lessons of 2024, both triumphs and trials, have laid the groundwork for several powerful trends that will define the next phase of blockchain adoption. Below, you can check some developments that I believe will gain real momentum or can impact the crypto market in the coming year and set the stage for even broader change by 2030.

3.1 Tokenisation of Real-World Assets (RWAs) Probably one of the most compelling narratives is the tokenisation of physical and financial assets. Until recently, the promise of putting stocks, bonds, property deeds, or even fine art on-chain was largely a theoretical exercise. In 2024, we saw early tokenised security offerings by established players in Europe and the United States, signalling that traditional finance is finally dipping its toes into crypto waters.

In 2025 (and beyond), I expect tokenised assets to move from pilot programmes to genuine market liquidity. Imagine being able to buy a fraction of a downtown office building or a slice of a blue-chip bond with the same ease as trading a mid-cap altcoin.

Beyond investment vehicles, tokenising real-world assets reduces settlement times from days to seconds and embeds compliance directly into the code. These efficiencies will be irresistible to institutional pools of capital, from pension funds to sovereign wealth.

But this is also good news for retail.

Tokenisation opens doors: fractional ownership lowers the entry threshold, and on-chain transparency gives everyday investors an unprecedented view into asset histories, fee structures, and performance metrics.

That said, bridging the gap between legal frameworks and smart contracts remains a hurdle. I’m watching jurisdictions such as Switzerland and Singapore, which have built clear tokenisation frameworks, for clues about best practice.

3.2 Cross-Chain Interoperability In 2024, “bridge hacks” and network congestion reminded us of the risks inherent in siloed, monolithic ecosystems. Developers responded by pushing new interoperability protocols that natively connect chains without centralised intermediaries.

I kinda of foresee a true “internet of blockchains” architecture becoming more commonplace (well, at least that’s what I am hoping for). Layer-zero solutions and crosschain messaging protocols will enable assets and data to flow securely across multiple networks. This simply means that DeFi composability will no longer be confined to one chain’s ecosystem; a dApp on Chain A can borrow collateral from Chain B, trade on Chain C, and settle on Chain D, all in a single transaction.

For DeFi degenerates, this translates into richer application choices and better capital efficiency. No longer do you need to pick one camp and stick with it; your crypto can work across markets, chasing yield or staking rewards wherever they are most attractive.

The trap, however, is that interoperability also introduces additional attack surfaces: code reviews, audits, and real-time monitoring will become even more critical to maintain security.

3.3 AI-Driven Finance and Personalisation Artificial intelligence has already begun reshaping crypto: automated market-making bots, AI agents, sentiment analysis engines, and portfolio optimisers are now standard tools.

AI will move from back-office efficiency play to front-end personalisation.

A wallet that learns your spending habits, suggests optimised gas fees, and routes your transactions across multiple rollups for the best price. Or An insurance protocol that dynamically adjusts premiums based on real-time portfolio health and on-chain behaviour.

However, with great power comes great responsibility. AI models need actual safeguards against bias, adversarial manipulation and data poisoning. And regulators are still ‘behind’ in all these, so I am assuming they will want visibility into how trading algorithms make decisions, especially if they influence price discovery on a large scale.

3.4 Sustainable and Green-First Blockchains Energy consumption and environmental impact have long been Achilles’ heels for proof-ofwork chains. While many projects have transitioned to proof-of-stake or other low-energy consensus mechanisms, public perception still lags behind.

Can we actually move away from corporate ESG checklists to on-chain features? I.e. − − −

chains that track and tokenise carbon offsets directly against transactions; validators rewarded for running on renewable energy; transparent reporting APIs that allow any user to verify a chain’s carbon footprint.

Beyond optics, these mechanisms can potentially drive real capital flows. Asset managers and corporates under increasing pressure to decarbonise will flock to blockchains that can substantiate their energy credentials. Those that cannot will find themselves at a competitive disadvantage, both in institutional and retail markets.

3.5 Layer-2 Maturity and User Experience Layer-2 networks have exploded in usage (although we can argue we have a tad too many as of now), and yet, fragmentation among rollups and optimistic solutions still frustrates end users. We need some form of consolidation. Either through rollup orchestration layers that dynamically choose the cheapest, fastest path for each transaction, or through “omni-rollup wallets” that hide complexity behind a single, uniform interface.

Better UX will be as important as raw TPS figures or even the ETF news. After all, a chain that processes 100,000 transactions per second means little if setting up a wallet requires ten separate downloads. Maybe we will see true “rainbow-table wallets” that allow one-click bridging, gas abstraction (pay in stablecoins or fiat rails), and built-in identity features.

3.6 Decentralised Identity and Privacy Finally, digital identity is no longer optional. As on-chain data proliferates, self-sovereign identity (SSI) protocols will become vital to ensure privacy and compliance. We’ve already seen some attempts at this, but I believe future competition will bring the first large-scale integrations of zero-knowledge proofs for age verification, sanction screening, and credential attestations—all without revealing underlying personal data.

Think about it for a second. The balance between transparency and privacy can unlock new verticals like on-chain gaming, where you prove your nationality to play a regional tournament, or lending platforms that verify your credit score without exposing your entire transaction history. SSI frameworks tied directly into wallets (via standards like ERC-725) can be a game-changer for regulated financial services in crypto.

4. Navigating the Pitfalls: What We Must Avoid In the rush to innovate or advance, founders, creators, investors, and the lot must remain vigilant against repeating past mistakes. Balancing regulation with technological progress, safeguarding users from evolving threats, and ensuring genuine community governance are critical to sustaining long-term growth and trust.

4.1 Regulation vs Innovation Finding the sweet spot between regulatory oversight and creative freedom is no small feat.

Europe’s MiCA framework aims to provide clear rules for issuers and service providers, shielding investors while encouraging responsible innovation.

Across the Atlantic, joint guidance from the U.S. SEC and the CFTC has clarified which tokens qualify as securities versus commodities. Yet, overly stringent requirements, such as onerous “travel rules” for on-chain payments, risk stifling startups and driving activity underground.

This kind of hack underscores the urgency for actual, robust security measures. Exchanges and dApps should implement multi-factor authentication, regular smart-contract audits, and bug-bounty programmes to deter potential exploits.

Education is equally crucial: newcomers need clear guidance on safely managing the associated risks, distinguishing phishing attempts, and employing burner wallets for high-risk transactions.

4.3 Community-Led Governance Kind of overlooked by today’s standards, but true decentralisation hinges on empowering token holders and individuals to actually shape a protocol’s future. Few established names like MakerDAO exemplify a mature governance model, where MKR holders vote on stability fees, collateral additions, and emergency measures, aligning incentives across stakeholders.

Similarly, Aragon and DAOstack have facilitated community decision-making on project funding, protocol upgrades, and treasury management, demonstrating that distributed governance can rival traditional corporate boards.

However, pitfalls remain: low voter turnout and plutocratic voting power usually skew decisions towards the wealthy minority. Solutions? Lower quorum thresholds, enable delegation to trusted delegates, conduct regular governance education campaigns, etc.

Is Bitcoin losing its soul? A sharp look at crypto’s institutional turn and the fading promise of decentralisation

Crypto is now very different from its early days. Much of its irreverent and, why not, anarchic spirit, which served as the seasoning for a good plate of pabellon criollo, has been contaminated by institutional money, which seeks to mark the course of the industry, bringing it closer to the traditional finance sector, putting its decentralised spirit in check.

Yes, technology must evolve and adapt to survive, but cryptos - especially Bitcoin have shown that they do not need recognition to prove their usefulness. The search for solutions outside the reach of centralised institutions that control the daily narrative of citizens (online payments, social networks, consumption of goods with hegemonic brands, etc.) has led, by its weight, to the usefulness of BTC as a medium of exchange and, more interestingly, as a store of value.

So why is the industry and some of its leaders still determined to ‘institutionalise’ a fledgling and irreverent sector like cryptocurrencies? The reason is simple: social control.

When bitcoin emerged with Nakamoto in 2009, very few visionaries, except for a handful of cyberpunks, saw the potential of using blockchain technology in the decentralised payment system, through the use of the proof-of-work (PoW) algorithm, solving the dilemma of double-spending that until then could not be avoided.

And it was no accident. Nakamoto knew very well the underlying problems of the traditional financial system: manipulation, artificial money, social control through bank debt, etc., and wished, in his legacy, to leave the tools to achieve financial freedom or as close to it as possible.

However, as a good invention that has its uses and triggers imminent success, Bitcoin has transcended the boundaries of programming code to become a new asset, labelled as the ‘digital gold’, of which everyone wants to get the biggest share.

Is the latter ultimately good for Bitcoin? And does it attract so much attention and interest from diverse users and institutions? Does it stand out as a good thing for the technology that underpins cryptocurrencies? On this point, there will be divided opinions and almost certainly an overwhelming majority telling you that it is good because without adoption, there is no liquidity, and without liquidity, there is no utility.

But it is always good to question what is shiny: what is the point of having an asset with utility and liquidity if, in the end, it is supported and sustained by the usual big players (governments, banks, centralised institutions, etc.)?

Objections to the narrative that Bitcoin must be as popular as the internet are possibly explained by the following facts, highlighting how some good 'ideas' do not necessarily remain so when they become popular.

Facebook: Its popularity brought billions online, but it also brought with it serious problems such as data breaches, censorship, child pornography and illegal activities ranging from theft to extortion, with some cases of deaths executed in certain places because of contact through its marketplace, a piece of the Meta-driven ecosystem.

While Facebook is still popular, the reasons for its unpopularity led to the departure of many of its loyal users to competitors, making the company widely questioned and, if it were not for its economic empire, forgotten.

Napster: If you were around in the nineties, you know what I'm talking about. The popular online music download site created a -before and after- with its emergence. But its popularity attracted the attention of regulators and billionaire musicians who did everything they could to make it disappear. Today, hardly anyone knows that Napster is still alive as a paid service.

Blackberry and Yahoo: While the demise of both pop culture icons of the 1990s was due to their competition and arrogance in adapting to new changes, there is something to be salvaged here: both Yahoo and Blackberry were arrogant and did not listen to their users, which led to their unpopularity. Remember, if you are an innovator, don't disregard what your most loyal base wants, because you may end up badly.

It is not too late to right the wrongs What does this technology need to adopt and correct to avoid being relegated to oblivion as a mere speculative asset on exchanges like Wall Street?

Let's start from the beginning, with some of the mistakes I have observed since my beginnings in the crypto ecosystem.. Although I am not a millionaire, I believe that sharing my mistakes without shame can help newcomers not to get carried away by FOMO or by the easy sale of influencers on Instagram who promise to make you a millionaire overnight with just $10 of investment.

Accessibility Crypto is not accessible. Even today it is more difficult for the younger generation to understand the concept behind this technology compared to other technologies adopted by previous generations. Perhaps the reason lies in the fact that they are more concerned about their daily dose of dopamine in the form of ‘likes’, than learning about new disruptive tools.

Who knows?

But the point here is clear: the interfaces are still lousy, inefficient, and we haven't seen any real innovations for a long time - just projects that copy and paste the same template.

Adoption is not real Adoption is far from real, even in countries such as the United States or Argentina, where the use rate is one of the highest in the world. In reality, crypto adoption and understanding are more complicated than we want to believe, let alone their use in our daily lives.

Just look at how these reports are constructed: the percentage of the statistical sample and the type of population selected rarely represents the ordinary user.

Want an example: Try sending your physical or virtual USD from the US to countries like Argentina or Venezuela to users who only have access to centralised options like Binance or Bitunix. You will be amazed at the cost, time and difficulties involved in doing so successfully.

When we hear that crypto adoption is booming, we must ask ourselves: who says so: a CEO of a company living in an idealised bubble, or a disenfranchised user from a poor neighbourhood who uses crypto as a financial inclusion alternative?

This is where we must focus our gaze, so as not to repeat the same mistake that banks have historically made and that now, the ‘institutionalisation’ of crypto is beginning to replicate.

More deeds, less words In recent years we have seen an avalanche of empty promises with hundreds of new projects emerging in the industry. But at the end of the day, they all make empty promises that don't end up being fulfilled for various reasons: the fastest network, the most accessible, the most secure, the most scalable, and so on.

But there is one thing we do know for sure: the river always seeks its course. Here we can contextualise two scenarios: 1.

If the technology behind the major crypto projects continues to fragment, the liquidity (and user base) will eventually implode and be reduced to a handful of projects, with Bitcoin leading the way.

2.

If we continue to see side projects proliferation to major cryptos such as Bitcoin or Ethereum, improvements at the protocol level, such as the PectrA case, may end up pulverising the sidechains.

This is already happening to some extent: many users are withdrawing their ETH from the L2s and returning to the main network because the low fees no longer justify exposing themselves outside the chain that offers security and decentralisation.

Let's extrapolate Snapchat to Bitcoin / crypto One of the reasons Snapchat maintains a more loyal audience than competitors like Instagram or TikTok is undoubtedly its authentic connection with the audience, which drives real action.

According to e-marketing studies, social shoppers are more inclined to purchase on Snapchat than on TikTok or Instagram. The reason? The human connection driven by Evan Spiegel (Snapchat CEO) is not found in other similar apps.

Here technology is used to keep people connected to the real world. It is not simply a channel for popularity-ranked content that undermines creativity rather than inspiring it.

Similarly, Nakamoto created Bitcoin as an asset that people can buy, hold and use, with an almost magical connection that does not involve losing touch with the everyday world. This spirit of innovation that we saw in the early years of blockchain technology, and especially of the ‘dinosaur’ cryptocurrencies, has been lost.

Today's projects are more focused on inflating their market cap and capturing attention at any cost, trying to attract a user base that sees no utility or connection to their day-to-day needs, with a handful of exceptions.

What must be replicated if new use cases are to have a future is this authentic connection created between the first BTC and Bitcoin holders in the early years.

Only then will the technology survive in the face of new narratives such as artificial intelligence, robotics or deep learning.

All is not lost I know that at this point you will be awash with some pessimism, and rightly so. But the intention here is not to raise false expectations or sell inflated numbers about how good the crypto ecosystem is.

That's already done by others, and you can look them up whenever you want, wherever you are.

The intention is to generate a critical, realistic, and even quite antagonistic, perspective on the evolution of this cycle of excitement, adoption and maturity that is the cryptocurrency sector, driven as always, by Bitcoin.

This ‘speech’ exposes simple solutions that we can begin to implement and, especially, to make known to those newer to this fascinating industry. So that their path is less tortuous, but more aware and aligned with the philosophy of the sector.

After all, there is no point in evangelising about bitcoin if we do not share its original ideals. It would be rather contradictory to preach like an apostle and not agree with the doctrine.

Finally, consider: Read, listen and learn about Bitcoin Whether we like it or not, it is the first, the originator and the centre of inspiration for the entire industry we know today. To not know its fundamentals and origins is to ignore its potential and usefulness.

Follow the narrative and spread the ‘bad guys’ from the ‘good guys’.

Not everything in crypto is tainted and damaged, there are a handful of cases that are worth highlighting and do their best to make the industry work.

Dig carefully into the projects that drive the TradeFi narrative.

Why? Simple: they are whales eager to make more money and they want your attention equals money. The traditional financial system to date has not solved the problem, otherwise, why do you think Bitcoin was born?

Technology is created by humans, but enhanced by robots.

The use of Artificial Intelligence in the crypto sector today is undeniable. But be warned: not all that glitters is gold. Ask yourself whether we desire a humanity dominated by bots or believe in the financial freedom of individuals under their domination. Your answer will guide your soul, and in turn, your long-term goals.

Financial education.

One of the great problems that has persisted in humanity, and unfortunately, everything seems to indicate it will continue to exist is the lack of financial education. Give them 1 BTC or 1000 BTC: if they don't know how to manage themselves, they will still be poor.

Remember: crypto is not a side business; it is a battlefield.

No one is here to make money, they are here to create wealth. Focus on learning.

I’ve been in and around the world of crypto for long enough now that it feels less like a novelty and more like a familiar old rogue of a friend. You know the type sometimes brilliant, sometimes frustrating, often misunderstood, and always a little bit ahead of the curve (or at least trying to be)!

It’s strange to think that Bitcoin turned 16 this year. Sixteen! Old enough to mop a floor at McDonald's, almost old enough to drive. But unlike teenagers, Bitcoin skipped the awkward phase and went straight to starting revolutions. In those early days, the entire crypto space was a weird, wonderful fringe filled with libertarians, anarchists, programmers, and a few gold bugs trying to understand what a “private key” was.

The Early Days If you were around in the early 2010s, you’ll remember that crypto didn’t have much polish.

Exchanges looked like they were built in someone’s garage (because they often were), and sending a transaction felt like lighting a bottle rocket: you hoped it went off, and you hoped it didn’t blow up in your face.

Mt. Gox collapsing in 2014, losing 850,000 bitcoins, was a wake-up call. That’s when many realised crypto wasn’t just a playground for ideology, it was serious money. But for all the chaos, something bigger was happening underneath: a movement was forming. People were building alternatives to traditional finance, piece by messy piece.

The Present Fast-forward to today, and the picture couldn’t look more different. Bitcoin’s on the balance sheets of public companies. BlackRock and Fidelity have spot ETFs. The SEC, for better or worse, knows the word “Solana.” And your Uber driver might have a Shiba Inu tattoo.

We’ve seen Layer 1 wars, the rise and fall of ICOs, the NFT boom and bust, DeFi’s summer of yield, and enough rug pulls to make even the most degenerate trader consider therapy. But amidst the noise, the core idea still holds: programmable money, open access, decentralisation.

People sometimes dismiss crypto as a solution in search of a problem. But tell that to the citizens of Argentina, Nigeria or Lebanon - places where local currencies have collapsed and people have turned to stablecoins to preserve value. We’ve even had El Salvador showcase how Bitcoin can benefit an entire nation, and they are doing a good job of it so far!

And let’s not forget Ethereum. Vitalik and co. quietly shipped a merge last year that changed its consensus mechanism. A kind of open-heart surgery while the patient was running a marathon. Love or hate proof-of-stake, you’ve got to admit that’s a hell of a technical feat.

The Future So, where are we going? Honestly, nobody knows. And that’s part of what keeps it interesting.

There are two broad futures I see: one where crypto becomes infrastructure boring, reliable, invisible - and another where it stays volatile, ideological, and creatively chaotic. The truth is probably somewhere in between.

On the bright side, I think we’ll see a lot more of crypto just working in the background.

Stablecoins will be as normal as PayPal. Self-custody will get easier. And things like ZK-proofs might finally give us privacy in a world where surveillance capitalism has run rampant.

On the murkier side, I think we’re heading into a regulatory arms race. Governments love control, and crypto undermines that in ways they don’t yet fully grasp. The EU’s MiCA framework is a start, and the UK’s making noises about becoming a “crypto hub” but there’s still a lot of bluster and very little clarity.

And then there’s AI. No opinion piece in 2025 is complete without a nod to our robot companions. What happens when AI agents start using smart contracts, managing capital, or even launching their own DAOs? The merging of crypto and AI could make today's markets look like wooden toys. Or it could just be more hype. That’s the fun of it. Nobody knows.

A Personal Note

This is the last issue (for now) with the Moon Mag, and it feels fitting to end on something that’s been such a huge part of my thinking over the years. I still believe that crypto invites us to reimagine systems that no longer serve. It rewards curiosity, punishes complacency, and asks hard questions about trust, ownership, and freedom.

It hasn’t always been pretty. There’s been grift, greed, and stupidity in generous doses.

But there’s also been brilliance, cooperation, and relentless experimentation. Crypto’s not a revolution that’s already happened. It’s one that’s still being written, block by block. And if you’re still here, then I think you’re in the right place.

And so here we are - orbit number 45. Each loop around this strange and brilliant Space has revealed something new: a perspective shift, a question worth asking, or just a moment of wonder. Crypto’s journey is far from over….and maybe ours isn’t either.
