MANIFESTO The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, capable of capturing, in all of its many facets, what is extraordinary in the everyday. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick up on budding trends, emerging talents, and overlooked aesthetics. It is an adventure towards discovering the most original creativity. It is a savoury mix of contemporary news acquired through persistent involvement in even in the farthest corners of the design world, as well as an occasional dive into fashion, seeing as the two go hand in hand.

The Moodboarders Magazine è un occhio spalancato sul mondo del progetto, in tutte le sue multiformi declinazioni, capace di cogliere, anche nel quotidiano, lo straordinario. È la misura della temperatura epocale. È l’antenna sensibile capace di captare le tendenze sul nascere, i talenti che sbocciano, le estetiche trascurate. È un viaggio avventuroso alla scoperta delle creatività più originali. È una miscela sapida di notizie contemporanee, recuperate grazie alla frequentazione assidua del mondo del design, conosciuto nelle sue più segrete pieghe e, saltuariamente, in quello della moda, poiché le due discipline si tengono per mano.

THE

ANIMAL GATHERING This past November, Einaudi publishing house released “L’Assemblea degli animali”, a fable that guides both children and adults with an essential message from an Italian born in Greece.

The author, encyclopedia translator, and writer Filelfo, who lives and instructs in the Agro Romano area, has a grandfather hailing from the Filelfi artistic coop.

The book depicts a meeting calling upon animals from every walk of life, gathered together to save the Earth from environmental demise. The work is dedicated to Ash, the first koala born after Australia’s most recent fire on May 26, 2020, and tells the tale of animals that address our ecological emergency, one that can no longer be ignored; our Earth needs to be saved. The Moodboarders No. 91 is sending a good omen to the animals during these trying times through illustrations, photography, sculptures, and painting.

A novembre, pubblicato da Einaudi, è uscita in libreria “L’Assemblea degli animali” una favola morale per adulti e ragazzi scritta da Filelfo (nome letterario), traduttore e redattore di enciclopedie che vive e insegna nell’Agro Romano, nato in Grecia, di origine italiana, con un nonno affiliato all’antica corporazione dei Filelfi. Il libro narra di una riunione convocata dagli animali di ogni specie per salvare la terra dal disastro ambientale. La pubblicazione, dedicata ad Ash, il primo Koala nato dopo l’ultimo incendio australiano il 26 maggio 2020, racconta che gli animali si riuniscono in assemblea perché l’emergenza ecologica non può più essere ignorata e bisogna salvare la terra. Agli animali, illustrati, fotografati, scolpiti, dipinti è dedicato, in tempo di pandemia, il numero 91 di The Moodboarders, perché sia di buon auspicio.

Ellen Jewett takes animals from land and sea and transforms them into imaginary creatures. She shapes ceramic forms inspired by nature, decorating them with diverse materials and shades. She has an imaginative bestiary perfect for a sort of wonderland: mice with lacy, leafy wings, bears with beaded, feathered, and belled coats topped with branches bearing flags, octopi covered in scales and shrubbery, parrots sprouting grass. Her fish trail budding leaves, and her tortoise, plants and a sapling. Her elaborate, decorative treatments unite flora and fauna, transforming sculptures into an unusual series of monsters hailing from land and sea.

Ellen Jewett si dedica agli animali terrestri e marini e li ritrae trasformandoli in creature immaginarie. Modella in ceramica le sagome, ispirandosi alla natura, quindi interviene decorandole con vari materiali e colori. Il suo è un bestiario fantastico, degno di un paese delle meraviglie, dove i topi possiedono ali vegetali che paiono merletti; gli orsi hanno la pelliccia addobbata con perline, piume e campanelli e sul dorso rami nodosi con bandierine; i polipi sono ricoperti di scaglie e di arbusti; sui pappagalli germogliano erbe; i pesci hanno foglioline sulle pinne; sulla corazza della tartaruga spuntano piante e un alberello con rado fogliame. Gli elaborati interventi decorativi, che collegano il mondo animale a quello vegetale, trasformano le sculture in una inedita serie di mostri marini e terrestri.

ANIMALS Sculptor Barbara Franc uses recycled tin cans and metallic threads, dressed in fabric remnants, to create animal shapes. She favours birds, but also moulds realistic dogs, fish, and imaginary griffins and dragons.

Her art transforms, beginning with things that have been thrown out, inventing fantastical, ironic assembled creatures that combine metallic ribbons, masking tape, and tin cans within elaborate frames of aluminum, brass, and copper.

Barbara Franc è una scultrice che si dedica alla rappresentazione di animali utilizzando lattine riciclate e intrecci di fili metallici, sui quali applica scampoli di tessuto. Predilige i volatili, ma nel suo repertorio ci sono anche cani, pappagalli e pesci ritratti dal vero, e animali immaginari come grifoni e draghi nati dalla sua fantasia. La sua è un’arte di trasformazione: partendo dai più diversi materiali di scarto riesce a realizzare realistiche sagome di animali assemblando, con fantasia e ironia, stracci, nastri adesivi, lattine di bibite… su elaborate intelaiature di fili di alluminio, ottone e rame.

HEN PORTRAITS Architect and designer Giudo Venturini, founder of the ludic and pop-inspired King Kong alongside Stefano Giovannoni, lives in a large home in the countryside with his three sons, surrounded by sprawling landscapes. Last year he purchased hens for the children; they ended up being his responsibility, kept in the courtyard. During the Italian lockdown, he began sketching them, adding his own colourful and expressive touch to a bird that is often considered quite daft. The “Il Gallinario” illustrated encyclopedia curated by Baraba Sandri, published by Quinto Quarto edition this past October; they’ve written that if the the hens can count to four, they can play the piano

Guido Venturini, architetto, designer, ex King Kong - duo fondato con Stefano Giovannoni per promuovere un design ludico/pop -, vive in campagna con i tre figli, in una grande casa, circondata da un vasto appezzamento di terreno. Un anno fa hanno deciso di comprare delle galline ovaiole per i bimbi, ma è finita che le cura lui e le fa razzolare in giardino.

Durante il lockdown ha iniziato a disegnarle, creando una serie di ritratti molto colorati e espressivi che testimoniano il suo occhio di riguardo per questo volatile, a torto considerato di poco cervello.

Ne “Il Gallinario”, la recente enciclopedia illustrata a cura di Barbara Sandri pubblicata da Quinto Quarto edizioni in ottobre, è scritto che le galline sanno contare fino a 4 e che possono anche suonare il pianoforte.

Jess Findlay CAPTURES BIODIVERSITY Burnaby, British Colombian born Jess is no stranger to a rich array of biodiversity, and since he was a boy, dedicated time with his family to bird watching. His early hobby transformed into a profession and mission.

In 2011, he won best photographer for the Young Photographer Prize.

Jess’ particular style of framing his subjects comes from the wild areas he grew up in. His unusual photography has been exhibited by several Natural History museums throughout the United States and Europe.

Jess, nato a Burnaby nella Colombia britannica, un’area ricca di biodiversità, sin da ragazzo ha dimostrato il suo interesse per la natura dedicandosi al bird watching con la sua famiglia.

L’hobby è diventato una professione e una missione. Nel 2011 è stato nominato miglior fotografo della natura nell’ambito del premio Youth photographer. Vivendo in un’area selvaggia, Jess ha sviluppato un particolare talento nell’inquadrare le sue immagini. Le sue insolite fotografie sono state esposte in vari musei di Storia Naturale, sia in Europa, sia negli Stati Uniti.

Josie Morway Artist Josie Morway portrays wild animals, mostly birds, choreographing them in unusual ways with an original approach. Every animal is painted within a photographic-style backdrop fit for the portraits, and each of her “subjects” is decorated with unlikely objects.

A white owl has a floral crown and bears a symbolic message, and an eagle’s tail feathers are dripping with ribbons and bows. Another bird of prey carries flowers in its beak, and colourful parrots have furry tails. Josie is inspired by classic sacred icons, replacing saints with birds and animals.

L’artista Josie Morway si dedica ai ritratti fotografici di animali selvaggi, prevalentemente volatili, ed esprime il suo originale talento studiando inusuali coreografie per le sue rappresentazioni. Ogni animale è ritratto all’interno di un set, creato da fondali pittorici e da improbabili decorazioni sui soggetti. Il gufo bianco, ad esempio, ha sulla testa una coroncina vegetale e una scritta simbolica, mentre l’aquila ha le piume della coda decorate da fiocchi, un altro rapace porta fiori nel becco, mentre i colorati pappagalli possiedono code di pelliccia. Per la composizione dei suoi ritratti Josie dichiara d’ispirarsi alla classica iconografia sacra, utilizzando animali e uccelli al posto dei santi.

CHICKENS “Chicken” is an elegant collection of 190 pages, 85 pages of high-definition photos published by the refined Austrian Te Neues in 2020.

Italian photographers Moreno Monti and Matteo Tranchellini immortalised extraordinary chickens as if they were stars in the limelight.

The unusual project began in 2013, when the photographers became fascinated with the diverse examples of these winged creatures while visiting the Avicoltura di Abbiategrasso e Reggio Emilia, a sort of beauty pageant for chickens.

Nell’elegante volume “Chicken”, 190 pagine con 85 foto in alta definizione, pubblicato dalla raffinata casa editrice austriaca Te Neues nel luglio 2020, sono raccolti gli scatti fotografici di straordinari esemplari di galline, realizzati dai fotografi italiani Moreno Monti e Matteo Tranchellini, immortalate quasi fossero star. He seeks to capture species that are endangered due to climate change and pollution, immortalising both wild and captive subjects, creating a surprising, diversified repertoire of portraiture.

Di base a Londra, il fotografo Tim Flach gira il mondo per fotografare volatili, cercando di catturarne, come nei ritratti di persone, espressioni e atteggiamenti. Il suo intento è anche quello di documentare le specie in via di estinzione a causa dell’inquinamento e dei cambiamenti climatici, immortalando sia esemplari selvaggi sia in cattività. Tra i ritratti più interessanti spiccano le foto dei volatili, ai quali si è dedicato con speciale attenzione, costruendo un sorprendente repertorio di caratteri.
