MANIFESTO The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, capable of capturing, in all of its many facets, what is extraordinary in the everyday. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick up on budding trends, emerging talents, and overlooked aesthetics. It is an adventure towards discovering the most original creativity. It is a savoury mix of contemporary news acquired through persistent involvement in even in the farthest corners of the design world, as well as an occasional dive into fashion, seeing as the two go hand in hand.

The Moodboarders Magazine è un occhio spalancato sul mondo del progetto, in tutte le sue multiformi declinazioni, capace di cogliere, anche nel quotidiano, lo straordinario. È la misura della temperatura epocale. È l’antenna sensibile capace di captare le tendenze sul nascere, i talenti che sbocciano, le estetiche trascurate. È un viaggio avventuroso alla scoperta delle creatività più originali. U N U S UA L Creativity, seemingly dormant and inured to commercial purposes, is going through an unexpected awakening. Artists and designers are rediscovering the pleasure of narration, the courage to experiment, and perhaps even titillate. Projects and installations are revealing newfound freedom.

Decoration, above all, wall coverings, is dominating interior design, even making its way into butcher shops. Surrealist fantasies become the leitmotif for spaces adopting the mindset of “total decoration”. AD Interieur includes an exhibition of laundry room decor. Home collections, designed by daring stylists, have made a comeback. Art is once again a fantastic tale contaminating the quotidian, all the way to coffee cups.

La creatività, che pareva assopita e assuefatta alle ragioni commerciali, sta conoscendo un imprevisto risveglio. Artisti e designer sembrano aver ritrovato il piacere della narrativa e il coraggio di sperimentare e, magari, di scandalizzare. Progetti e allestimenti rivelano una nuova libertà. La decorazione, soprattutto murale, è la grande protagonista dell’interior e fa il suo ingresso, persino, nelle macellerie. Fantasie surrealiste diventano il leitmotiv di allestimenti all’insegna della total decoration. In mostra a AD Interieur anche un progetto di lavanderia decor. Ritornano le home collections, firmate dagli stilisti di grido. L’arte è di nuovo racconto fantastico e contamina il quotidiano, giocando anche con le tazzine da caffè.

Venice’s Magazzini del Sale, along with the Biennale di Arte, hosted an exhibition by Robert Wilson in honour of the 25th anniversary of the Illy Art Collection. Wilson’s installation celebrates the espresso cups decorated by celebrated artists by creating seven animal-filled, fairytale-inspired areas, similar to those used in his stage productions. A Siberian tiger stalks the jungle with a cup on its tongue, flying rabbits in a vintage-style room, a white garden filled with cranes and monkeys, furious red wolves, an elegant shiny-eyed panther strewn out across a dormeuse.

At the end of the exhibit, a sort of wunderkammer celebrating the iconic Illy cup designed by Matteo Thun in 1991, decorated by great artists, in including Marina Abramovic, Jeff Koons, Julian Schnabel, Anish Kapoor, and Daniel Buren, only to name a few. The unique project mirrors a journey much like Alice in Wonderland, where along a pink, peony covered table, the cups are displayed on plexiglass stands, one after another, surprise after surprise to be admired in the splendor of their original state.

In occasione del 25esimo anniversario della Illy Art Collection, i Magazzini del Sale a Venezia, in concomitanza con la Biennale di Arte, hanno ospitato un’installazione di Bob Wilson, ideata per celebrare il compleanno delle tazzine da caffè decorate da artisti. Wilson ha creato un percorso articolato in sette ambienti onirici, popolato da animali, spesso protagonisti delle sue opere. C’è la tigre siberiana dentro un bosco con una tazzina sulla lingua; ci sono i conigli volanti in un interno in stile vintage; gru e scimmie in un candido giardino; lupi rossi infuriati; un’elegante pantera con gli occhi luminosi, sdraiata su una dormeuse. Alla fine del percorso si giunge alla wunderkammer dedicata alla celebrazione della iconica tazzina Illy, disegnata da Matteo Thun nel 1991 e illustrata da artisti come Marina Abramovic, Jeff Koons, Julian Schnabel, Anish Kapoor, Daniel Buren… L’originale progetto è una sorta di viaggio di Alice, di sorpresa in sorpresa, che approda a un lungo tavolo rosa, decorato con vasi di peonie, dove sono allineate le esclusive tazzine, disposte a diverse altezze su sostegni di plexiglass trasparente, in posa per farsi ammirare nel rigoglio delle loro originali figurazioni.

HOME WEAR Gucci’s Alessandro Michele has a style that has taken the fashion world by storm (not to mention copied by many), and now, he is moving on to home decor. This past September, a first taste of Gucci Decor was unveiled. Alessandro collects and elaborates on stimuli from varying worlds, freely mixing and violating the rules of coordination. His home accessories reflect this liberty. His fashion collections’ patterns, colours and designs decorate furnishing, upholstery and objects, creating a sapid mixture that stands outside of traditional interior design guidelines. Tigers, cats and lions dominate, along with floral patterns. Richard Ginori’s masterful porcelain artisans brought the sophisticated designs to life. Ensuring that the interior transmits a total sensorial experience, Alessandro Michele also created an olfactive palate of four new home fragrances derived from floral and botanical essences.

A settembre è stato lanciato il primo assaggio di Gucci Decor. L’inclinazione di Alessandro a cogliere e a elaborare stimoli provenienti da mondi diversi, mixando in grande libertà e sovvertendo le regole del coordinato, si riflette anche nei pezzi che compongono la prima serie di accessori per l’interior. Ispirati alle sue collezioni moda, fantasie, colori e disegni sono stati rivisitati per decorare mobili, tappezzerie e oggetti, creando una sapida miscela, estranea alle consuete regole dei progetti d’interni. Grandi protagoniste le fantasie floreali dalle quali fanno capolino gatti, cani e tigri. La sofisticata decorazione delle porcellane è stata resa possibile dalla maestria degli artigiani della Richard Ginori. This pillow design is inspired by those once used in church by English nobles and was presented as the seating during the Cruise 2016 runway show which took place in the cloisters of Westminster Abbey.

THE STORY OF

CIF AMOTAN II World-renowned English artist Damien Hirst placed a diamond-clad skull in the entrance of Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana, installations that marked the historical account of Amotan, a freed slave imprisoned by his passion for collecting.

Born to the masses, but earning riches on his own, he bought anything that he deemed beautiful from varying cultures, loading it onto a boat, creating a a palace dedicate to the sun. The ship sank at the beginning of the African coast, taking all of its treasures with it. 2000 years later, Damien Hirst, with a team of divers and archeologists, claims to have recovered Amotan’s treasure. He represents this collection in two extraordinary exhibitions in Palazzo Grassi and Punta della Dogana.

Covered in salt, shells, and coral, these masterpieces represent his last provocative proof as an artist. The Pinault Foundation presented two events, in both its branches, where the spaces became inspirational archeological museums housing over 100 works of various sizes, ranging from jewel-clad scorpions to sculptures of legendary heros, all consumed by the sea.

Art has become a tale of epic proportions.

Per spiegare le sue installazioni a Palazzo Grassi e Punta della Dogana, il famoso artista inglese Damien Hirst, autore del teschio tempestato di diamanti posto all’ingresso di Palazzo Grassi, narra l’avvincente storia di Amotan, schiavo liberato dalle catene, ma imprigionato nell’ossessione del collezionismo. Nato povero e poi diventato ricco, comprò tutte le belle cose provenienti dalle diverse culture e le caricò su un vascello per erigere nella sua terra un palazzo che fosse un omaggio al Sole. Ma il vascello naufragò al largo dell’Africa con tutti i suoi tesori. Venti secoli più tardi Damien Hirst racconta di aver recuperato, con l’aiuto degli archeologi e dei sommozzatori, il tesoro di Amotan. La narrazione è la premessa delle sue straordinarie esposizioni a Palazzo Grassi e a Punta della Dogana. Oggetti e capolavori artistici d’ogni genere e fattura incrostati di salsedine, coperti di conchiglie e di rami di corallo rappresentano la sua ultima provocatoria e avvincente prova d’artista.

Per l’evento la fondazione Pinault, nelle sue due sedi veneziane, diventa un museo di archeologia fantastica, con centinaia di opere di varie dimensioni, dagli scorpioni tempestati di pietre preziose ai complessi scultorei che immortalano leggende ed eroi, alcune consumate dal mare. Una invenzione geniale per rendere l’arte una racconto epico.

Italian furniture brand, Opinion Ciatti, presented “La chambre surrealiste” at Paris’ Monnaie during this past September’s AD Interieurs. The project was designed by Maurizio Galante and Tal Lancman, completely red, and completely lined, flooring, walls and ceiling, in psychedelic carpeting. Against the wall, dominating the scene, a red, metallic, four poster bed with matching sheets. Square ottomans and high-backed armchairs were covered in red, faux fur, dotted with buttons resembling hulled eyes, and a glass-top, aluminum side table, painted red, was faceted like a crystal. A neon light design in white and orange on one wall accentuated the psychedelic effect. Within the ten rooms decorated by the refined artists selected by the magazine, Galante and Lancman’s fully covered, fully red and fully patterned space was a creative deflagration. Maurizio and Tal, eclectic designers who cut their teeth in the fashion world, brought the rich exuberance of couture to the project’s visual impact, setting themselves apart from the other designers.

In settembre Opinion Ciatti, marchio italiano d’arredo, ha presentato alla Monnaie di Parigi, nell’ambito della esposizione AD Interieurs, “La chambre surrealiste”, un progetto firmato da Maurizio Galante e Tal Lancman. Lo spazio all’insegna del colore rosso era completamente foderato - pavimento, pareti e soffitto - da un tappeto con un disegno di tipo psichedelico, declinato in varie tonalità di rosso. Dominava la scena, poggiato alla parete, un letto a baldacchino con struttura in metallo dipinta di rosso e lenzuola nella medesima tonalità. Pouf squadrati e poltrona, dall’alto avvolgente schienale, erano rivestiti in pelliccia sintetica rossa, punteggiata di bottoni simili a occhi sgranati; il tavolino basso in acciaio verniciato di rosso, con piano in vetro, era sfaccettato come un cristallo. Su una delle pareti un disegno al neon, nei toni del bianco e dell’arancio accentuava l’effetto psichedelico. Nel contesto delle 10 stanze, decorate con misurata eleganza da progettisti scelti dalla redazione del mensile, quella di Galante e Lancman, declinata nelle sfumature del rosso, completamente tappezzata con un insistito motivo figurativo, appariva una sorta di deflagrazione creativa. Maurizio e Tal, designer eclettici, maturati nel mondo dell’alta moda, hanno introdotto nel progetto d’interior la ricca esuberanza della couture, distinguendosi dagli altri progettisti per l’impatto visivo del loro allestimento.

During the 2107 AD Interieurs, Rodolphe Parente designed “La Chambre Surrealiste”, an original take on the laundry room. The young designer graduated from Digione’s Scuola di Belle Arti, then Strasbourg’s Decorative Arts School, and then Lausanne’s Ecole, Andrée Putman’s ex-collaborator. Rodolphe chose to decorate a laundry room, a space often forgotten by interior designers. The room was perfectly equipped with fractal, polychrome-pattered resin flooring, two copper walls, and a third mirrored one. The washer was enclosed in copper, and the central focus of the room is the ironing board resting on a burl cabinet designed to hold soaps. The ironing “station” has an arm for ironing sleeves, an adjustable lamp, and a rest for the iron. The station is covered in a refined geometric pattern, and the wall has a metal rod complete with hooks to hang ironed clothing.

The burl and copper materials bring warm tones to the space, contrasted by the volcanic stone sink.

Nell’esposizione AD Interieurs 2017 faceva il paio per originalità con “La Chambre Surrealiste”, la lavanderia creata dal giovane designer Rodolphe Parente.

Diplomato alla Scuola di Belle Arti di Digione, quindi alla Scuola di Arti Decorative di Strasburgo e infine all’Ecole di Losanna, ex collaboratore di Andrée Putman, Rodolphe ha scelto di allestire una stanza di servizio: la lavanderia, ambiente sempre trascurato dai decoratori. Perfettamente attrezzata, la lavanderia era dotata di un pavimento in resina, caratterizzato da un disegno frattalico policromo, due pareti erano di rame, e una terza lamellare a specchio. La lavabiancheria era incassata nella parete in rame. Al centro, dominava lo spazio l’asse da stiro poggiata su mobiletto porta detersivi in radica, dotata di braccio per stirare le maniche, corredata di lampada orientabile e di piano d’appoggio per il ferro. Il rivestimento dell’asse era caratterizzato da un raffinato disegno geometrico. La parete era corredata da una barra metallica con ometti per appendere gli abiti stirati. Il tutto declinato nei colori caldi del rame e della radica. A contrasto il lavello in pietra lavica grigia.

This past September, during Fashion Week, Milan’s center transformed into a stage that hosted the best of Italian creativity, presenting suggestive scenography that represented Italian “know-how” in varying areas. Davide Rampello, creator and promoter of this unique festival, has gathered powerful associations, including the Ministero dello Sviluppo, Confindustria, ICE, Comune di Milano, and Altagamma, to bolster Milano XL. Nine films

by Altagamma, shown in Montenapoleone, narrate the history of Italian artisan practices. The Galleria Vittorio hosted a series of three-dimensional portraits, the Salotto delle Gioie, where each portrait is adorned with jewelry from other famous paintings. Valuable upholstery, representing textile arts, flow from the windows of Palazzo dalla Ragione in Piazza della Scala. The facade of Rinascente department store was covered in 720 hand-painted masks; the idea, sponsored by Cosmoprof, belongs to choreographer and director Marco Baldazzi. In Piazza Croce Rossa, a film dedicated to leather working, from the raw materials to finished product, was projected onto the Sandro Pertini monument. The history of Italian artisan practices, exhibited in the heart of the city, brought a varied view of national excellence, based on preserving the ancient tradition of masterly know-how..

In settembre, durante la settimana della moda, il centro di Milano si è trasformato nel palcoscenico della creatività italiana rappresentata con suggestive scenografie, immaginate per raccontare il saper fare italiano nei vari settori produttivi. Inventore e promotore di questo inedito festival Davide Rampello, che ha saputo riunire attorno al progetto Milano XL il Ministero dello Sviluppo, Confindustria, ICE, il Comune di Milano, Altagamma e le associazioni di categoria. In Montenapoleone, nove filmati a cura di Altagamma raccontavano le radici delle nostre eccellenze artigiane. La Galleria Vittorio Emanuele ha ospitato il Salotto delle Gioie, una serie di ritratti di personaggi famosi, ornati da gioielli ripresi da famosi dipinti, ricostruiti tridimensionalmente. Dalle finestre del Palazzo della Ragione in Piazza della Scala, scendevano drappi preziosi, testimonianza dell’arte tessile. La facciata della Rinascente era tappezzata da 720 maschere dipinte a mano, un’idea di Marco Baldazzi, coreografo e regista, sponsorizzata da Cosmoprof. In Piazza Croce Rossa, sul monumento a Sandro Pertini, un filmato narrava le creazioni di pelletteria della concia al prodotto finito. La storia delle “artigianie” italiane, rappresentata nel cuore del centro cittadino con installazioni spettacolari, ha proposto al grande pubblico il variegato racconto dell’eccellenza nazionale, basata sulla capacità di preservare l’antica tradizione del virtuoso sapere fare.

AN ORGANIC BUTCHER IN BROOKLYN A new butcher shop, specializing in organic mea and unusual design, has opened in Brooklyn. The designer, Sergio Mannino, describes the interior as simple and modern. “The shop”, he says, “is a place where you feel like you are home, totally different from traditional butcher shops.” The design mirrors the brand identity; natural materials, like wood blend with potted plants and flowers at the entrance, and Morris-style floral wallpaper. In front of the counter, the illustration of a cow, divided into various cuts bearing patterns of flora and fauna. No frills, only the quiet elegance of a family business, or better, an aesthetic shopping experience. Going beyond ideological or healthy choices, I believe this Brooklyn butcher shop could reconcile the consumption of vegetarian meat. left on chairs, hanging on clotheslines, strewn on ironing boards…as if they were left by a fashion addict as they undressed to nap or to change, without bothering to put them back in the wardrobe. The installation gives the visitor the impression of suddenly finding themselves in a dandy’s closet, no longer an onlooker in an exhibition, but the spectator of a private moment captured by an indiscreet eye.

Ha recentemente aperto a Brooklyn una macelleria specializzata nella vendita di carne organica e caratterizzata da un inusuale progetto di interni. Sergio Mannino, l’artefice dell’interior, lo descrive come semplice e moderno.

Il negozio, aggiunge, “è un posto dove sentirsi a casa, completamente diverso dalle altre tradizionali macellerie”.

Il progetto corrisponde all’immagine del marchio, materiali naturali, come il legno, mensole con vasi di fiori e piante verdi all’ingresso. Le pareti sono tappezzate con una carta da parati floreale, stile Morris. Quella di fronte al banco ostenta una grande immagine di mucca, utilizzata per indicare i tagli di carne, rappresentati da differente fantasie, vegetali e floreali. Niente di trucido, ma la quieta eleganza di un ambiente familiare, o di un negozio di prelibatezze in scatola per dimostrare che fare la spesa può diventare anche una esperienza estetica. Al di là dei problemi di salute e delle scelte ideologiche, credo che la macelleria di Brooklyn possa riconciliare al consumo della carne vari vegetariani.
