MANIFESTO The Moodboarders is a glance into the design world, capable of capturing, in all of its many facets, what is extraordinary in the everyday. It is a measure of the times. It is an antenna sensitive enough to pick up on budding trends, emerging talents, and overlooked aesthetics. It is an adventure towards discovering the most original creativity. It is a savoury mix of contemporary news acquired through persistent involvement in even in the farthest corners of the design world, as well as an occasional dive into fashion, seeing as the two go hand in hand.

The Moodboarders Magazine è un occhio spalancato sul mondo del progetto, in tutte le sue multiformi declinazioni, capace di cogliere, anche nel quotidiano, lo straordinario. È la misura della temperatura epocale. È l’antenna sensibile capace di captare le tendenze sul nascere, i talenti che sbocciano, le estetiche trascurate. E’ impossibile dare conto di tanta abbondanza, segnale di un approccio al design tollerante e inclusivo disposto ad abbracciare le creatività più singolari.

MILANO DESIGN WEEK 2017 This year’s design week was brimming with generous, agreeable offerings, and the sunlight and almost summer-like breezes only encouraged the masses to come out in force and wait in winding lines to enter the most heralded installations. The Salone del Mobile fair, visited for the first time by Italy’s Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella, hosted 2200 exhibitors. The city also hosted over 1000 events spread throughout, which included the up-and-coming areas of via Durini, Isola, 5 Vie, Ventura Centrale, and Sant’Ambrogio. Despite the fact that quantity generally sees a cull in aesthetic value, the events were not lacking in multiform quality. The city’s most impressive historic buildings welcomed contemporary design, creating a sort of contamination that refreshed classical elements while humanizing modern ones. It would be impossible to report on the abundant selection of the highly diverse styles and unique creatives in a tolerant, inclusive manner. Obviously, replicas and clashing notes were present, but with such a generous gamma to chose from, it is useless to focus on the downfalls. Instead, the positive energy extracted from the week’s experiences will be dedicated to the multifaceted creativity of the future.

E’ stata una settimana del design generosa di proposte e di consensi, che ha avuto dalla sua anche il tempo meteorologico, soleggiato e con temperature quasi estive, affollata, con lunghe code agli ingressi delle mostre più gettonate. Si contano 2200 espositori al Salone del Mobile in Fiera, che per la prima volta è stato visitato dal Presidente della Repubblica Sergio Mattarella e circa 1000 eventi sparsi in città, con concentrazione nei vari distretti, tra i quali i nuovi punti di aggregazione di via Durini, Isola, 5 Vie, Ventura Centrale e Sant’Ambrogio. A dispetto della quantità, cui sempre si attribuisce il decadimento dei valori estetici, non è mancata la qualità, manifestatasi nelle sue più varie forme. La città ha aperto le porte dei suoi palazzi più spettacolari per accogliere il design contemporaneo in scenografie d’epoca, creando contaminazioni, utili a ringiovanire il classico e a umanizzare il moderno. E’ impossibile dare conto di tanta abbondanza, segnale di un approccio al design tollerante e inclusivo, disposto ad abbracciare gli stili più diversi e le creatività più singolari.

Ovviamente in tanta varietà non sono mancate repliche e stonature, ma quando il raccolto è generoso non vale la pena preoccuparsi della gramigna. Conviene, invece, utilizzare l’energia positiva di questa settimana come ricostituente per la creatività futura in tutte le sue molteplici forme.

THE TRASH

Vincenza’s historic luxury textile brand, Bonotto, under the artistic direction of Cristiano Seganfreddo, has its boutique in a historic building on Milan’s Via Durini. The Japanese garden and in-ground pool were the backdrop for a new tapestry collection created in collaboration with the up-cycling masters, Miniwiz. The multi-coloured, patterned designs were made of recycled materials instead of precious threads, and the project looks to manifest a revolutionary way of textile manufacturing.

Seganfreddo commented, “Beauty must also do some good”. The richly coloured tapestries have lush botanical designs that perfectly compliment the pool, filled with transparent bottles and scraps of PET, reminding visitors of the pieces’ humble beginnings.

Bonotto, storica azienda tessile vicentina, di lusso, con la direzione artistica di Cristiano Seganfreddo ha proposto nello showroom milanese di Via Durini, in uno storico palazzo con giardino in stile giapponese e piscina coperta nel seminterrato, una collezione di arazzi creati in collaborazione con Miniwiz, leader mondiale nell’upcycling. I policromi e fantasiosi arazzi che decoravano lo spazio sono stati realizzati non con filati preziosi, ma riciclando materiali di scarto. Si tratta di un progetto-manifesto in grado di rivoluzionare la produzione tessile. “Il bello deve essere anche buono” dichiara Cristiano Seganfreddo. Gli arazzi sono figurativi e rappresentano una natura rigogliosa, in colori accessi, ideale cornice della piscina in cui navigavano bottiglie di plastica trasparente e brandelli di pet, per sottolineare l’umile ed etica origine di tanta lussureggiante bellezza.

Our guests really enjoy the colours, flavours, shapes and textures of our chocolate selection here at Torre del Saracino, and the only way to make a simple, natural choice is to see the full palate.

The final moments of lunch evoke sweet, abundant closure: I designed a multi-level dessert cart that practically floats, placing the focus on the chocolates’ character and shapes. Our client is free to arrange the components on their plates, guided by their own sensations and the varying aromas. We designed this final “treat” as a piece that meets our specific serving needs. Following the success of the dessert cart, we asked Cristian Visentin to bring a transparent combination of a tajina from Maghreb (in which we stew meats), and a Tuscan terracotta vase, to life. The container keeps the preparation warm while immediately and visually presenting it to guests. This sort of “plated pan”, made of borosilicate glass, includes everyone in the preparation of a pre-dessert.

Il carrello dei dolci e il pre-dessert - Alla Torre del Saracino è molto apprezzata la disponibilità di cioccolato in tante forme, consistenze, colori e sapori.

Una palette che aveva bisogno di essere mostrata nel suo insieme per consentire una scelta semplice e naturale. È il momento di chiusura del pranzo, quello che verrà ricordato per completezza, dolcezza, disponibilità. Ho disegnato un carrello completamente trasparente e a più piani per restituire la sensazione del cioccolato leggero che quasi si libra nell’aria e mette in mostra forme e muscoli. Un piatto che il cliente compone da sé scegliendo gli aromi e le sensazioni che preferisce. Una “coccola” resa possibile da un oggetto di design che non esisteva e che abbiamo modellato secondo le nostre esigenze. Il successo del carrello dei dolci ci ha spinto a ragionare su un altro elemento della cena: Cristian Visentin ha ridisegnato la mia idea di un contenitore trasparente che mettesse insieme una tajina del Maghreb in cui si stufano le carni e un antico fiasco da cottura toscano. La necessità di mantenere in caldo una preparazione e al tempo stesso di dichiarare subito, in trasparenza, il contenuto della “pentola da portata” ci ha portati ancora una volta al vetro borosilicato che rende partecipi i commensali dell’azione e della preparazione di un pre-dessert.

Jaime Hayon converted the recently and conservatively restored Palazzo Serbelloni using Caesarstone’s palate of over 40 colours for their thirtieth anniversary. Inspired by the Crystal Palace, constructed in Hyde Park for the 1851 World Expo, Hayon filled the rooms with the quartz-based, metal and tempered glass material. Tables and conduits decorated with multi-coloured geometric inlays, including the astounded “Clown”, were spread throughout the building’s spaces. The material’s versatility lent itself to the Valencian designer’s lucid approach, which he applies masterfully even to large scale exhibitions; the “Stone Age Folk” installation is a fitting example.

All’interno dello storico Palazzo Serbelloni, che di recente è stato oggetto di un sapiente restauro conservativo, Jaime Hayon, per celebrare il trentesimo anniversario di Caesarstone, ha allestito un padiglione ispirato al famoso Crystal Palace di Hyde Park a Londra, costruito per l’Esposizione Universale del 1851, combinando oltre 40 colori di Caesarstone, l’innovativo materiale a base di quarzo, con metallo e vetro temperato. Erano disseminati nelle sale del palazzo grandi tavoli e contenitori, decorati da intarsi policromi geometrici e figurativi, come il volto stupefatto del contenitore “Clown”. Grazie alla versatilità del materiale, il noto designer valenciano, con la sua installazione “Stone Age Folk”, ha dato, anche in grande scala, un’egregia prova del suo approccio ludico al progetto.

This year’s design week exhibited a vast variety of specimens; the “Mixed Grill” presentation in a warehouse on Milan’s Via Adamello, just behind the Fondazione Prada, is a prime example. Eclectic Belgian architect and interior designer Lionel Jadot, a cement enthusiast, filled the space with tapestries, containers of various kinds, and stuffed seating, all created through the materials’ daring transformations.

Chopper is fully functioning, despite the knotted tree-trunk that serves as its frame. The tapestries are a mixture of vintage textiles from flea markets with glittering pop-inspired patchwork inserts, and the armchairs a combination of untreated sticks and trunks and seating made from old blankets. His work often includes mechanical elements taken from old motorbikes and cars, raw cement and natural wood.

A riprova della varietà offerta da questa edizione della settimana del design, si può citare la presentazione “Mixed grill”, in un magazzino di Via Adamello, dietro la Fondazione Prada. La presentazione è di Lionel Jadot, belga, architetto d’interni e designer, appassionato di cemento. L’eclettico Lionel spazia dagli arazzi, ai contenitori, agli imbottiti, sovente creati mediante ardite trasformazioni, come il Chopper, perfettamente funzionante, con un tronco nodoso al posto della sella. Gli arazzi sono combinazioni di tessiture vintage, recuperate nei mercatini delle pulci, con patchwork di gusto pop in colori sgargianti; le poltrone sono assemblaggi di tronchi al naturale con cuscini realizzati con vecchie coperte. Frequente nelle sue opere l’abbinamento di elementi meccanici, rubati a moto o vecchie auto, con legno naturale e cemento grezzo.

WITHIN Standing in counterpoint to Lionel Jadot’s “trash” was Adrian Cheng’s pure, taciturn Wander from Within installation, hosted in Villa Necchi Campiglio. The young tycoon from Hong Kong was a student of the famous Japanese designer Shigeru Uchida, who passed away in 2016. The exhibition is dedicated to this master, and takes inspiration from Uchida’s bent bamboo pavilion, a project in which Cheng directly took part in. He created a series of bamboo seating in collaboration with master-artisan Chuzo Tozawa. Using the same construction techniques applied to the pavilion, they created a collection of welcoming armchairs, woven screens and minimal tables. The pieces were photographed in the forests that cover Japan’s snowy mountains; the collection, and the photography and films that captured it within the natural background, were presented in an all-white setting. Cheng did not only enchant with his zen installation, but the news that on April 4th, at the beginning of the Salone del Mobile, he joined the Sotheby’s Asia auction by phone for the sale of the 59,60 carat Pink Star diamond. He purchased the stone for 71,2 million dollars, making the world record for the highest price paid for a jewel during an auction. Minimalist design that was once reserved for the illuminated bourgeoisie, rich in ideas and less so in material possessions, has broken through to the international finance scene.

Fa da contrappunto al creativo “trash” di Lionel Jadot la pura e silente installazione Wander from Within, creata a Villa Necchi Campiglio da Adrian Cheng, il giovane magnate di Hong Kong, appassionato di design, allievo del famoso designer giapponese Shigeru Uchida, scomparso nel 2016, cui è dedicato il progetto. Con la collaborazione del provetto maestro artigiano Chuzo Tozawa, Cheng ha creato una serie di sedute ispirate al famoso padiglione da tè in bambù, creato da Shigheru Uchida con cui ha collaborato, costruito interamente a incastro. Con la stessa tecnica Cheng ha realizzato delle sedute dallo schienale avvolgente, dei paraventi a intreccio e dei tavoli essenziali. Li ha quindi fotografati sulle vette innevate delle montagne giapponesi e in mezzo alle foreste, proponendo, assieme ai pezzi allestiti nel bianco assoluto, foto e filmati dei medesimi immersi nella natura. Ma Cheng non fa notizia solo per la sua installazione zen, ma anche perché, il 4 aprile, durante la settimana del Salone, si è aggiudicato all’asta di Sotheby’s Asia, per telefono, il diamante rosa Pink Star, di 59,60 carati per 71,2 milioni di dollari, il prezzo più alto per un gioiello venduto all’asta. Il design essenziale, sino a poco tempo fa privilegiato dalla borghesia illuminata, ricca di idee e povera di beni, accede, finalmente, ai piani alti della finanza internazionale.

GAME Brianza’s Campeggi specializes in transformable pieces that, thanks to innovative designers, have taken sleeper-sofas to another level; the shiny, magical “objects” in an array of glittering colours go beyond of-the-moment trends. Ottomans become ergonomic armchairs through the clever use of fitted pieces instead of mechanical gadgets, and the sommier hides a pouf in one of the arms, transforming it into a single bed. A high backed chair resembling that used for tennis referees morphs into a relaxing hammock.

French designer Matali Crasset made a name for herself during the first edition of the Salone Satellite 20 years ago, presenting the sleeper-sofa “Quand Jim monte à Paris”; her current work includes the armchair, “Extension de Generosité”, featuring moveable arms cum cushions that alter the comfortable seating’s angles and positions. The loveseat “Voleo” has a sinuous back that transforms into a relaxing, ergonomic daybed.

Campeggi è una azienda della Brianza, specializzata in trasformabili che, grazie alla collaborazione con designer inventivi, ha rivoluzionato il settore dei divani letto, mutandoli da ripieghi dell’ultima ora in oggetti ludici e magici, resi segnaletici da rivestimenti in colori sgargianti.

Senza far ricorso a marchingegni ma grazie a intelligenti giochi d’incastro, i pouf diventano poltrone con schienale ergonomico; il sommier pieghevole accoglie in un abbraccio il pouf squadrato che lo trasforma in regolamentare letto singolo; la sedia alta, simile a quella degli arbitri delle partite di tennis, sostiene un amaca elastica, ideale per rilassarsi. Ancora, la poltrona “Extension de Generosité”, disegnata da Matali Crasset, la nota designer francese, che si fece conoscere alla prima edizione del Salone Satellite di 20 anni fa con un letto pieghevole, denominato “Quand Jim monte à Paris”, è corredata di braccioli-cuscini, movibili, che consentono diverse e accoglienti posture di seduta.

Mentre “Voleo”, un divano due posti, con schienale sinuoso, si trasforma in un day bed, offrendo un relax ergonomico.
