I am following along your serial Jerusalem Stone with bated breath.

The rich plot and the characters

captured my interest and my heart, and I await the next installment each week.

I am wondering, though, being that I am so deeply involved in the story, if this is a fictional account or if it is based on real-life happenings. I know some of the details of the story to be true of Meah Shearim of that era, but am wondering about this story in particular.

Thank you for providing this valuable community forum. The issue I write about to you is one that confronts me every year.

How wonderful that I finally have a place where I can reach out to other Monsey families to raise awareness and foster a community conversation.

and tension of the yom tov rush is greatly exacerbated by the interruptions. The doorbell-ringing extends through the day, intrudes on our supper (and causes all the kids to clamber for the door...) disturbs the bedtime routine, and lasts until an inexcusable hour of the night.

The problem, namely, is the incessant tzedaka collecting t h a t goes on during the Rosh Hashanat h r u S u k k o s season.

The season is the busiest one of the year, with the back to school, change of season, and yom tov preparation all in full swing. To this potent mix, add the children’s looser cheder/ school schedule.

I truly understand and sympathize with mothers that are searching for ways to occupy their young ones, and thereby get their tasks done unhindered. The solution?

Hordes of miniature-sized fundraisers are released on the streets, wielding pushkes, plastic cups, raffles, or just pants pockets, in a pinch. They knock on doors, they ring the bells, and if no one responds, these fellows are very, very persistent. They will try again, and again, and again.

Tzedaka is an important mitzvah, especially in Elul, but first and foremost, parents must instill in their children basic kavod habriyos.

A child who is too young to understand how to collect tzedaka in a manner that is mature and sensitive is not yet ready for this responsibility.

For that is what tzedaka collecting is- a responsibility, not a recreational activity or a convenient time-filler.

Please, the situation has gotten out of hand. The stress

I urge parents to put some thought to this matter, and to develop some rules that their child/ren is/are made to understand clearly, such as:

Which hours of the day it is acceptable to go collecting.

•

You may ring the bell once and knock twice. If there is no response, move on- even if you know that someone is home!

•

How to graciously say “Tizku L’Mitzvos” and move on, regardless the size of the donation.

In Response to Private Property Becomes Public Domain (Issue #17) I, too, live in a neighborhood where many children playing outside use anything they see around and play with it. To me there are two issues at hand that are equally problematic. The first is the free-for-all attitude of “If I want it, it’s mine,” and the second is the lack of hakaras hatov and responsibility children have for their belongings.

I have personally found my labeled belongings that have been put away, or left right by my door, missing. I once came outside to find my daughter’s bike at the side of the road, completely unusable, appeared to have been hit by a car. The biggest problem, besides for broken bike, is that the bike had been put away in a bike room!! It was not even left outside! This was not the first time our stuff has been taken and left recklessly all over the neighborhood. Another time, I left my son’s bike with training wheels in front of my door to put away a little while later, and I could not find it anywhere! I finally found it in the park lying on it’s side!

completely beyond my understanding. People spend hard-earned money or receive gifts of all sorts of outdoor toys, and do not take care of them. This includes everything from thousanddollar strollers to fifty-dollar imitation doll carriages! In our neighborhood one must dodge bikes, electric toy cars, scooters, and riding toys as they drive through. It’s no wonder someone could hit my bike and not say anything, or apologize, when easy come easy go. And it’s almost no wonder that children think they can take anything they want, after all, they are not even caring about their own things.

ARE YOU GAINING WEIGHT FROM ALL THE YOM TOV MEALS? WOULD YOU LIKE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF OUR “BODY TRANSFORMATION PROGRAM”

This attitude of anything I see I can use, and anything I want I can take, does not seem B’derech Ha’Torah at all to me. Or perhaps you’re on the opposite end of the spectrum, having your adult children and their families over for Yom Tov. Between changing the linens, stocking the pantry, freezer, and refrigerator, and seeing to the myriad of details vying for your attention before

Therefore, we present to you guidance and advice on how a woman in every stage can enjoy the nachas without compromising on Simchos Yom Tov. Mrs. S. Y. Weingarten, an expert mechaneich, brings to you valuable tips on keeping organized for an enjoyable and enjoyable and relaxed Chol Hamoed experienced. Mrs. P. Samuels, a long-time Bubby and hostess, shares important tips she’s learned that allows you to focus on your nachas instead of your work. PLANNING For Chol Hamoed Chol Hamoed - so many parents call it: “A child’s dream, a parent’s nightmare.” Proper planning can make all the difference.

I. Daven- Everything we do needs Siyata Dishmaya!

II. Pre Plan Early!

Starting to plan on the morning of Chol Hamoed is the perfect recipe for disaster. Summer Bein Hazmanim is a good time to start.

III. Food Breakfast- Prior to setting out, make sure your children have a very filling meal. Traveling with children who are satiated makes a very big difference.

Give every child their own trip bag which should include: A water bottle (freeze halfway, filled with water the night before, fill to top before trip) Sucking candies and small snacks Cut-up fruit and vegetables work well, too.

Gum and plastic bag, if necessary Lunch- Make it filling and easy to eat sandwiches, whole wheat crackers and cheese, patties (potato, cheese, chicken…)

Supper- At the end of the day, you’ll come home with hungry, tired children. Supper must be prepared before you leave to the trip. Oven with self timers or crock pots work very well. Soup can be made in advance and warmed up. Fresh cut-up vegetables and fruit complete your meal.

A. Set your limits: How far are you willing to travel?

How long can your children behave in the car? (Remember you have to drive back, too!) Be realistic about your itinerary and allow for flexibility. Traveling with children takes much longer. How much do you want to spend? Include: entrance fees, tickets, gas, and tolls.

B. When you have your limits down pat, present them to your children: Ex: “Kinderlach, we have two days of Chol Hamoed, one day paid entertainment, one day free We can travel up to one hour each way.” Getting children involved is great! Let every child give their opinion. Many times older children will try to convince younger siblings to do things their way. Two days of Chol Hamoed gives us the opportunity to cater to each age bracket.

C. Don’t finalize any plans without double-checking the information: • Call the place; check the hours on that day.

• Inquire about the entrance fee, parking accommodations, and age appropriateness.

• Put the location into the GPS that you will be using. Does it

IV. Prep Your Car Make sure your car can handle the trip. Check tires, fluids and fill the tank with gas. Keep your roadside assistance up to date and the card with the number in your wallet.

V. Pack the Car Packing the car takes time. Not

packing it properly can waste so much more time.

How to Enjoy

HOSTING YOUR CHILDREN on Yom Tov

(It’s all a matter of attitude!)

What better time is there to enjoy your children and grandchildren than over Yom Tov? With a bit of prior planning, Yom Tov can be hassle-free, regardless of extenuating circumstances.

1.

Take outside help. Make that a priority in your budget. An extra pair of hands to clean chickens, peel potatoes or change linen is worth more than the most exotic delicacies from your local chocolate store or fancy toys for the kids.

2.

Allow your children to help, and don’t hesitate to ask for that help.

If your daughter wants to bring some food, and a certain dish is a chore you detest, ask her to make it for you. She will feel good about it, and she’ll probably thank you for helping her figure out what you want and need. Most teenagers are off from school a few days before Yom Tov. Make “helping Bubby” a privilege and you’ll have as much assistance as you need.

3.

Have more disposable dishes and flatware than you think you will need. They don’t spoil, and you’d rather not run short. Your children are coming to spend time with YOU and not with your fancy dishes. If washing away will be a source of stress, leave the fancy stuff in the

cupboards.

4.

Put away all fragile “tchotchkes.” If you still have young children at home, remind them to put away anything they do not want the nieces and nephews to get their hands on. Puzzles, school projects and collections are very enticing to young children, especially if they belong to a favorite aunt or uncle.

Give your children something small,

as “prizes” for the little ones. Just make sure it’s not something messy.

All children love a pair of sunglasses, a Chinese jump rope, or a little picture book.

5.

Have a special “Bubby treat.” My grandchildren actually believe that what they call “magic straws” which flavor milk is only sold to grandmothers.

6.

Use your freezer to the

max. Almost everything can be made in advance and frozen. To freeze potato kugel to fool the most critical gourmand, bake it until it is three quarters done. Before reheating and finishing to bake, pour a few tablespoons of boiling water over the kugel. No one will know that it wasn’t freshly baked.

7.

Prepare a lot of simple food for the hungry horde on Erev Yom Tov. Set out bowls of fruit, pretzels, crackers, baby carrots and of course lots of potato kugel. Cereal and milk and yogurt are other options.

8.

Remember: VESAMACHTE B’CHAGECHA is a mitzvah. Be besimcha with your family. If it gets a bit too noisy, you can retreat to your room and close the door, or go out for a short walk.

And as you survey the mess of the latest Yom Tov nosh party, think of your childless cousin who NEVER has lollipop wrappers strewn on her pristine living room floor.

Recap: Duvid finds out that his son, Chuna, was in a nearfatal accident. He rushes to the hospital, where he is warned that charges might be filed against him. He tries to support his wife as his son’s situation deteriorates.

Chaya’s Story: The entire night we sat, hard plastic chairs beneath us, waiting. I shivered in the cold night. Duvid offered me a shawl, but despite wrapping myself in it, I couldn’t stop. I said the entire Sefer Tehillim twice, each time finding new meaning in different verses, the ones that made me break down and cry.

Then, exhausted, I talked to Hashem.

“It’s my fault,” I said. “I should have looked after him.

He seems like a big boy, but nine is so small. I couldn’t devote myself to him. A mother should never work; this is why it happened. I thought I could make things better for the family and I only made this happen.”

I cried and cried. Once or twice, official-looking doctors approached us to ask how this had happened. “It’s me. It’s my fault. Take me, handcuff me, throw me to the dogs,” is what I wanted to say. But the

thought of my children going into the hands of others made me clam up and turn to Duvid, who told them, firmly, “Right now, we are focused only on the wellbeing of our son, Chuna. Please take all these questions to my friend, Velvel Parness, and he will give you the information.”

“We just need to know how to help your son,” a young nurse said, believing we believed her.

“You know how to help him, by assessing all the substantial damage,” Duvid said. More was not said that night.

We sat and waited. An Arab woman sat at the other end of the row of chairs, and just because I couldn’t distract myself with something else, I studied her bored but pensive lips.

Duvid tried talking to me. I knew he wanted to hear what

had happened, but I couldn’t bring myself to say it. I just continued to sit, daven, look around. Everything was too clean. I couldn’t even find a speck to run my eyes over.

Finally, they came out and told us that Chuna was being brought back in his room.

They had hope. He might live.

His face was small, his bandage big. I knew that under that bandage was the blood and gash I had seen when I found him, lying on his face, contorted, in a pool of blood. I stroked his thin, short fingers.

EMV

Ever see one of these?

This is a card with an EMV chip An EMV card is not swiped. It is “dipped” into a special port on an EMV terminal or card reader.

The embedded microchip can’t be re-encrypted, which makes it nearly impossible to counterfeit.

If an EMV card has a PIN, it will offer even more protection by ensuring that it belongs to the person using the card, and is not lost or stolen.

The USA is currently migrating to the EMV system, and is the last developed country in the world to do so.

What is the “liability shift”?

Due to their great losses, the processing banks are no longer willing to assume the responsibility for transactions that are not EMV compliant

Who needs to be EMV compliant?

If you swipe cards, you must ensure that you have EMV compatible equipment, and that it is supported by your processing bank.

It makes no difference how you swipe; credit card terminals, POS systems, gateways and software with magnetic swipers they all need to be EMV compliant.

The only merchants who do not need to worry about EMV are merchants who are set up as MOTO or e-commerce, and never need to swipe.

As of October 1, 2015 the liability for any fraud committed on a swiped card with an EMV “chip” is the responsibility of the merchant, unless they have EMV compliant equipment, and have completed the transaction the correct way by using the EMV dipper instead of swiping.

What if I do nothing?

Nothing will happen… until you are hit by fraud or counterfeit transactions.

The shift is not any more mandatory than putting a lock on the front door of your business. It’s just plain common sense.

If you do get hit by fraud, you may be 100% liable for the consequences.

IF IT HAS A CHIP ...YOU NEED TO DIP! Just because your equipment has en EMV dipper does not mean that it is EMV ready. If your terminal lets you swipe a credit card that has an EMV chip without requiring you to dip it instead, then you are not EMV compliant!

How to Use an EMV Chip Card Step 1: Insert Card

Instead of swiping, you must insert the card into the terminal, chip first, face up.

The card needs to remain in the terminal throughout the transaction.

Step 2: Follow Prompts

Follow the prompts on the terminal and wait for the transaction to be processed.

Card holder may be required to enter a PIN or sign a receipt.

Step 3: Remove the card

Remove the card after the transaction is completed and you are prompted to do so by the terminal. Remember to return the card to the customer.

1 c. brown sugar 2 containers tofutti cream cheese 2 c. sugar 2 scoops vanilla sugar 4 T. whip topping 3 flat tsp. cinnamon Beat cream cheese and whip topping. Then add rest of ingredients, continuing to whip until well incorporated. Roll out one ball at a time. Spread filling on the dough, and roll. Freeze for 2 hours. Then, cut 1 ¾-inch slices. Place each bun into a cupcake liner in a pan. Bake on 350 until golden brown (about 25-35 minutes).

COZY: CINNAMON, CRANBERRY, AND PEAR

SAVORY FRUIT TEA

This tea, served warm, is the perfect drink to obliterate the chill on a cozy Sukkos night. Depending on the intensity of the flavor you prefer, hot water can be added to it.

2 ½ c. water 2 cups cranberry juice 2 tsp. lemon juice 2 T. honey ½ c. sugar 8 Fruits Galore Wissotzky tea bags (or mix your own fruit variety from the company of your choice) 2 cinnamon sticks 6 cloves 1 orange Bring the liquids, honey, and sugar to a boil.

Meanwhile pierce orange with cloves. Let sit for five minutes, and cut orange into wedges.

Prepare the tea bags, cinnamon sticks, and orange in a mesh bag. Add mesh bag to the boiled liquid. Shut flame and let sit for at least an hour for an intense flavor.

MARINATED PEARS

Once I tasted these delicious pears from my sister-in-law, they became my favorite dessert. Thank you, Zissy W., for this family favorite. Classy and lighter than most desserts, these pears are a perfect ending to a late Sukkos meal.

TIP

12 pears 1 c. sugar STRAIN LIQUID FOR A DELICIOUS DRINK, WHICH CAN ½ c. honey BE SERVED WARM OR CHILLED. 1 vanilla sugar 1 lemon – squeezed 20 oz. cranberries 3 apple cranberry tea bags In a saucepan, place peeled pears upright – tightly packed. Add enough water to cover. Add the rest of the ingredients except the tea bags. Boil. Reduce heat and let cook 45 minutes. Shut the flame and add tea bag. Serve with sauce and cranberries.

TIP THESE PEARS CAN BE COOKED IN A DEEP 9”X13” AND FROZEN IN PAN. FREEZES WELL.

The trick to a good-looking rainbow cake is to very delicately color the layers for soft coloring. yellow layer:

5 eggs 1 c. sugar 1 vanilla sugar ¼ c. oil ½ tsp. almond extract ½ tsp. baking powder 1 c. flour pink layer: 5 eggs 1 c. sugar ¼ c. oil ½ tsp. almond extract ¾ tsp. baking powder 1 raspberry jello 1 c. flour green layer:

5 eggs 1 c. sugar ¼ c. oil ½ tsp. almond extract ¾ tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. water 1 lime jello 1 c. flour 2-3 drops of green food coloring For each layer, beat the eggs with sugar on high until light and fluffy. Lower the speed and slowly add the rest of the ingredients. Spread each layer on a lined cookie sheet. Bake on 350 for a half hour.

Cool cakes before assembling.

To assemble, spread apricot jam between layers.

Melt ½ lb. baking chocolate and ½ stick margarine and spread over top of cake. Cut this cake to desired shape before it is frozen.

TRI-COLORED BUNDT SHERBERT

There’s nothing like a refreshing sherbert to end off a delicious meal. yellow layer: 1 mango-flavored jello 2 cups boiled water 1/3 cup sugar 1 1/3 cup pineapple juice 1 scoop vanilla sugar Mix well and freeze in container. red layer: 1 raspberry jello 2 cups boiled water ¼ c. sugar 1 c. orange juice Mix well and freeze in container. green layer:

1 mango-flavored jello 2 cups boiled water 1/3 cup sugar 1 1/3 cup orange juice 3 T. lemon juice Mix well and freeze in container.

When mostly frozen, thaw one layer at a time. Break up into chunks and put into the food processor with ¼ c. whip topping.

Process until soft. Put into Bundt pan. Freeze a half hour between layers.

To serve, run the Bundt pan under hot water, taking care that it shouldn’t slip out while over the sink. Carefully turn over onto a plate.

This ice cream can be layered in individual ramekins or glassware or prepared in a 9”x13” pan.

This is usually prepared as a sheet cake.

For special occasions, it can be done individually as mini cupcakes.

vanilla layer: 3 eggs, separated 1/3 c. sugar 10 oz. whip 1 scoop vanilla sugar Beat egg whites. Slowly add sugar and set aside. Beat the rest of the ingredients in a separate bowl. Fold together with whites. Spread ice cream in a 9”x13” pan and freeze.

chocolate cake:

chocolate fudge: 6 T. cocoa ½ c. whip topping 2 ½ T. margarine 6 T. sugar 1 tsp. vanilla sugar Over a medium flame, stir all ingredients until fully dissolved. Cool and pour over frozen vanilla layer. mint layer: The same ingredients as the vanilla layer, with ¼ tsp. mint extract, 1 drop of green food coloring, and a handful of mini chocolate chips added.

Spread on top of the chocolate fudge.

Green food coloring (optional) Mix and spread onto cooled cake. Then melt 10 oz. baking chocolate and 1 stick of margarine and spread on top of frosting.When the chocolate is set, cut into 2-inch squares. For smoothest cuts, cut before you freeze it.

2.5 c. flour 3 c. sugar DECORATE SQUARES BY DRIZZLING WITH GREEN 1 lb. margarine CHOCOLATE. 1 ¼ c. cocoa ½ tsp. baking powder 6 eggs 2 T. vanilla extract 3 T. corn syrup With an electric mixer, mix all ingredients. Spread on a cookie sheet. Bake on 350 for 40 minutes. Let cool. mint frosting: 1 stick margarine 1 box confectioner’s sugar 1 tsp. mint extract 3 T. water

The mint in this drink leaves you refreshed even after a heavy dessert.

4 c. hot water 1 16-oz. whip topping 1 instant chocolate pudding 1 ½ tsp. vanilla extract ½ tsp. mint extract Using an immersion blender, mix ingredients in a saucepan. Bring to just under a boil, stirring constantly.

Can also be done in the microwave.

Serve hot.

Are you wondering what makes Sari a popular floral designer, or how she came to be a leading name with an impeccable reputation in the event and wedding industry? Here are some of her secrets revealed…

Sari began her career in artistic event planning and upscale catering after years of being a style leader in various productions in London, Israel, and New York. The first event that she orchestrated was an engagement party at the New York Country Club, a party that drew 1,000 guests. This was an introduction to a world of delicious dining and fine styling.

Floral design is an element that enhances any meal being served. In 2011 Sari opened Orchid Floral Design. By working out of a floral design studio, clients were able to select a menu that was sophisticated and original, while at the same time choosing a floral décor that would infuse a scent and style to the spirit of the event.

Her company is known for its innovation and trend-setting ideas. Sari is always upgrading her props and ideas, and does not duplicate events in cookiecutter style.

Last week we featured the first of our four installments of checklists to keep in mind when branding. Last week we discussed the personality and attitude of a brand and how it will set the path of all the rest to follow. So what is the personality of your brand?

Brand Language: The same way we can understand that different personality types will dress differently, it’s simple enough to understand that they will also speak differently.

Take these two snippets of conversation, for example; how would you describe the two speakers?

Abe: It is really not my type to bother you, but would it be possible for me to use my vacation days instead of working on Chol Hamoed?

Sam: I can’t work on Chol Hamoed. I don’t mind using my vacation days to compensate.

Without ever meeting or seeing them, we would probably all describe Abe as insecure and Sam as assertive.

Copy is literally the language of your brand. How does it speak?

The Evolution of Copy: Since the beginnings of advertising, copy has turned into a science of its own. The copy is the salesman speaking directly to the reader/viewer.

They’re having a talk. The potential consumer has questions. He wants to know: What are the benefits of this product? How is it different than other products on the market? Why is it priced at this point? The salesman tries to answer him, to find the best answers to allay all his questions. Only it’s not a conversation. It’s an advertisement.

Looking at the diagram, you can clearly see how advertising has changed.

Never mind the aesthetics of color, art, fonts etc. But the most noticeable change is the demise of copy. We can argue about whether it’s because we’ve lost our attention span or we’ve simply become shrewder, but as the popular study goes: you have three seconds to get consumers’ attention, so here’s our checklist of important things to remember when you craft your three seconds worth of show time.

In this season of “Sukkos,” of a temporary dwelling, I thought a good topic for today’s article would be whether it makes financial sense to purchase a home that one has no intention of living in for a long period of time. Should one purchase or rent in that situation?

There are a few financial factors that go into effect when you buy and sell. Akiva Spitzer, CPA in Spring Valley, spells it out from a tax perspective: Sale of Your Main Home If you sell your main home and make a profit, you may be able to exclude that profit from your taxable income. Here’s how it works. Individuals can exclude up to $250,000 in profit from the sale of a main home (or $500,000 for a married couple) as long as you have owned the home and lived in the home for a minimum of two years. Those two years do not need to be consecutive. In the five years prior to the sale of the house, you need to have lived in the house for at least 24 months in that five-year period. The home must have been your principal residence.

You cannot deduct a loss from the sale of your main home.

Reduced Maximum Exclusion If you fail to meet the requirements to qualify for the $250,000 or $500,000 exclusion, you may still qualify for a reduced exclusion. This applies to those who: •

Fail to meet the ownership and use tests, or

Have used the exclusion within two years of selling their current home.

In both cases, to qualify for a reduced exclusion, the sale of your main home must be due to one of the following reasons.

A change in place of employment

•

Health

•

Unforeseen circumstances

Basically, if you sell a primary residence after living in it for less than two years out of the last five years, you may have to pay capital gains tax on any gain. So besides purchasing a new home, paying the closing costs on the purchase, and paying the closing costs on the sale, you also may need to pay tax on any gain. A few years ago, I had a client who had purchased a home in Brooklyn. They lived in it one year and three months and then there was a SWAT team raid on the block. Fifteen to twenty police vehicles pulled up, and police personnel dressed in SWAT gear, with their automatic weapons out, raced to a neighboring home.

Fondly known as Viola Park to Monsey natives, Manny Weldler Park features a playground and swings, as well as a big sandbox area. The park also has several tennis and handball courts, as well as bicycle and jogging paths.

There are only a few picnic tables, but with a bit of improvising on bleachers overlooking the tennis courts, you can accommodate a large crowd of hungry children.

(And really, what’s wrong with sitting on the grass?)

There are grassy fields surrounding the park, and plenty of open space.

Eugene Levy Park has lush, grassy hills and beautifully maintained fields. It boasts an exciting playground with novel play equipment. There are handball courts, an exercise trail, and paths for jogging and walking. Its duck-inhabited pond encircled by a path is a source of wonder and enjoyment for kids and adults alike. There are picnic tables scattered about in a few areas, and one shaded pavilion for larger crowds. A unique feature in this park is its stargazing platform.

This park has something for everyone: Sunlit fields, as well as areas of plentiful shade (for truly sweltering summer days.) It is spacious – ideal for a large family gathering – yet you can easily find a private spot. The playground is wonderful! There are three play stations, each one with swings, slides, balance beams and bars.

A beautiful trail runs through the park, past grassy expanses and woodsy areas. At one point, it arches as a bridge over a picturesque pond. The park also has picnic tables, benches, and a gazebo overlook.

Lions Park has a very nice fenced-in playground with lots of different areas for the kids to spread out. The play area is in two sections for each age group. There are so many things to do in this park! The centerpiece of the park is a kid’ssize fire truck to sit in. Other playthings include seesaws, many types of slides (corkscrew! double slides! tunnel slides!) swings for toddlers as well as for older kids, balance beams, monkey bars, and more.

This park features a trail with a stream. There are picnic tables available, and parking is ample, although most of the spots require a permit. Be careful where you park; the signs are not very prominent.

The Upper Saddle River area residents consider Lions their neighborhood park; keep that in mind before planning your trip.

HAVERSTRAW BAY COUNTY PARK Haverstraw Bay Park is a delight for the entire family. It features huge playgrounds for children of different ages, with a soft floor, lots of picnic tables, a boardwalk, and a 9/11 memorial. Its prime attraction is the Hudson River which it borders.

This exciting playground overlooks a beautiful fishstocked pond. It has a well- cultivated nature area, and a jogging path around a pond with a water fountain. The playground is fully fenced in, with benches encircling its entire perimeter. This is a much-appreciated amenity for parents, who can sit in comfort while looking after their romping children.

This beautiful destination isn’t especially suited for young children. It has a long riverside trail with benches every so often, which can be walked or biked, as well as picnic areas.

The trail leads to Rockland Lake State Park on Hook Mountain, and runs right along the river at sea level, providing hikers and riders spectacular views and fresh water breezes.

Rockland Lake State Park’s lake is located on a ridge of Hook Mountain above the west bank of the Hudson River. The park offers picnic tables, grilling, hiking trails and a paved 3.2-mile bike path around the lake. This circuitous bike path is set against the gorgeous backdrop of trees, mountains in the distance, and the lake it circles.

The Saddle River Area Bike Path in Bergen County stretches for nearly six miles along a 577-acre linear park system that hugs the banks of the Saddle River and its tributaries. There are actually five park areas linked by the multi-use path, which travels from East Ridgewood, near the duck pond, south the Rochelle Park.

The path runs through a wonderland of scenic delights. The best of nature comes together in the form of gurgling water, miles of greenery, birds in flight and even a waterfall at Dunderhook Park. The trail includes ponds, shaded picnic areas, pavilions, and playgrounds.

The runs through Ridgewood, Glen Rock, Fair Lawn, Paramus, Saddle Brook and Rochelle Park along the Saddle River and Ho-Ho-Kus Brook. It also passes the historic Easton Tower on Route 4. There are many access points to the Saddle River Pathway. Trail maps are available by calling the Bergen County Department of Parks at the number above.

Bear Mountains is a perfect picnicking and hiking destination. Sprawling fields, numerous picnic tables and trails of different levels make it a popular nature excursion. With a museum, zoo, carousel (which only work at specific hours/days and have a charge of about $1), there’s something for everyone. There’s also the option of boating in the warmer months of the year.

The park is woody and airy. Leafy trees dot its entire landscape and provide shade on all the trails, paths, and picnic areas. It offers a refreshing and delightful hike; all around is a showy display of blooming, blossoming, budding nature.

There is one main picnic area at the summit of Tallman Mountain, but you’ll come across groups of three or so tables clustered alongside the trails and near the main parking lot.

The picnic tables are set up in secluded spots, which allows for private, quiet family picnics. Unlike the parks in the Town of Ramapo, grilling is allowed.

Observatory until four, but you can ascend the summit until dusk Perkins Memorial Drive is a breathtaking scenic drive up Bear Mountains. While there’s a trail from Bear Mountains to the observatory, which takes about 2.5 hours to hike, it is most conveniently reached by car. There are parking spots on the summit, which can be crowded on an autumn day, and also parking spots on the way - if you’d like to have a 10-or 15-minute hike to the top.

On the summit, there’s a four-story observation tower from which you are treated to a stunning 360-degree vista of the surrounding landscape, including four states (NY, NJ, CT and PA), the Big Apple skyline, the Hudson Highlands and the Hudson River some 1,000 feet below.

There are benches scattered around at the summit to take in the breathtaking views.

There are also rocks from which to take in scopes of land and for shooting photos.

On a breezy day, the wind will be very strong on the summit.

Harriman State Park is a great destination for hiking, boating, fishing, picnics, and overnight camping. Fishing is allowed in most of the 36 lakes and ponds in Harriman, and a fishing license is required.

There’s no official gateway entrance to Harriman State Park, and you can enter for free through the roadways that crisscross Harriman. You could think of the Reeves Meadow Visitor Center as one informal gateway. In the visitor center you can purchase trail and park maps, but it is open on weekends only. Maps can also be purchased at the Bear Mountain main desk.

Seven Lakes Drive is a gorgeous scenic ride. It extends for just under 18 miles. Most of the highway is located in either Harriman or Bear Mountain state parks.

As its name implies, Seven Lakes Drive passes by seven lakes located at various points along the road. From south to north, the lakes are Lake Sebago and Lake Kanawauke in the towns of Haverstraw and Tuxedo; Lake Skannatati and Lake Askoti in Tuxedo; Lake Tiorati in Tuxedo and Woodbury; Silver Mine Lake in Woodbury; and Queensboro Lake in Highlands.

Sections of Seven Lakes Drive and several other roads in the park system (Tiorati Brook Road, Lake Welch Drive, and Perkins Memorial Drive), are closed for the winter from December through March.

There are areas where you can stop for a picnic, or even for a dip in the water.

The Piermont Pier extends a mile from the quaint shoreline town into the Hudson River.

The walk is a celebration of the senses: the incredible view, the refreshing misty breeze, the rhythmic slapping of water on rock. Those choosing to complete the entire 1-mile hike are well-rewarded for their efforts. Coming in contact with the deeper-water level of the Hudson is revitalizing. It feels as if time is suspended, surrounded as you are on every side by the roiling, churning waves.

Bird watching is common ‘round these parts, thanks to the large array of feathered creatures which frequent the area. Botanical enthusiasts can sight many different grasses, herbs, trees, vines, shrubs, and ferns growing in the region. The pier can be walked, biked, or traveled by car - and there are even limited parking slots along the way that can be used with a permit.

The term “preserve” is used for an environment of passive recreation. The most notable feature of the Preserve is the system of carriage roads built to complement the landscape.

The carriage roads, many of which are accessible, allow visitors to experience and enjoy the natural wonders of the area. These scenic paths wind through wetlands, woodlands, meadows, and fields and past streams, rivers, and lakes while traversing wood and stone bridges. You may even come across horse riders who take advantage of the carriage roads, and get the full colonial experience!

The preserve is just four minutes away by car from the Kykiut Estate in Sleepy Hollow.

THE LOUIS ENGEL WATERFRONT PARK A very pretty park by the water with amazing river views, Louis Engel Park is the perfect place for a picnic supper if you do this in conjunction with the Haverstraw-Ossining Ferry.

Locals fondly call Croton Dam “Little Niagara Falls.” Indeed, it is a breathtaking spectacle– impressive in scale, with a dramatic drop and spillway.

The Croton Dam is in Croton Gorge Park, a 97-acre park filled with fields, trails, woods, and a children’s playground and picnic area. The park is at the bottom of the dam, with the awesome, thundering waterfalls dropping just yards away from where you can take in the scene.

To get a view of the top, from the bridge that spans the dam, you can hike up through the trails in the woods.

The ascent is peaceful and shady, and takes you along the Croton Reservoir and eventually to the bridge on top.

From above, the view is remarkable. With the dam and spillway on one side, and the reservoir on the other, you won’t know where to look first! Bring along your best camera, as it is a stunning backdrop for family pictures and portraits.

Croton Dam is of the largest man-made stone structures in the world, coming in third after the Great Wall of China and the Great Pyramid of Giza. The “Old” Croton Dam was the first large masonry dam in the U.S., whose main purpose was supplying water to New York City.

Soon enough, though, New York needed more water, and work began on the New Croton Dam. It was completed in 1907, with the Croton Reservoir having the capacity to hold approximately 34 billion gallons of water and a watershed covering 177 square miles- no small feat!

Besides for serving this crucial purpose, Croton Dam is one of the most beautiful attractions in the Tri-state area.

The Walkway over the Hudson is something special to try. And it doesn’t need to be traversed by bike. It is actually most commonly crossed by foot. Whether you’re going for a stroll on a cool summer day or biking the span amid the fall foliage (or taking in the snow-covered landscape in the winter) -- it’s forever enjoyable and beautiful. At 212 feet tall and 1.28 miles long, the Walkway over the Hudson is the longest, elevated pedestrian bridge in the world. With benches at each of the bridge’s three scenic overlooks and picnic tables at both bridge approaches, go and stay awhile.

You can also enjoy the views of the Hudson Valley from the recently installed 21-story elevator, which operates between 9:00 am and 1:00 pm. More than 200 feet tall, it connects the Poughkeepsie waterfront to the Walkway.

Biking trails are available on either side of the Walkway.

In a quiet little corner of Westchester County, surrounded by trees and fields and a clear blue sky lies Muscoot Farm.

Established in 1880, Muscoot Farm has many of its original buildings. Visitors can walk through the dairy barn, milk house, ice house, blacksmith shop and several other barns and buildings. There, they get to see farming equipment used a century ago, and can learn how jobs were carried out, such as chopping ice for refrigeration and ironing clothes. They get to visit an authentic farm kitchen, with a set table and stocked pantry, and to examine all kinds of buggies and agricultural tools. (While this may seem not to hold significant interest for some, children learning the pertinent topics in chumash or 39 malachos of Shabbos find it fascinating to see the different farming equipment mentioned there in real life.)

And of course, there are the farm animals. While petting is not allowed, children can come in close contact with horses, livestock and poultry, goats and sheep and occasionally, they might even get to assist in milking a cow.

More than seven miles of winding hiking trails allow visitors to explore some of Muscoot’s 777 acres through fields, woodlands and wetlands. Trail maps are available in the reception center at no charge.

While it does not operate all the time, the highlight of a trip to Muscoot Farm may very well be the 25-minute hayride! A tractor-pulled hay wagon takes visitors beyond the farm complex, offering a different perspective of the farm. Hayrides are available to the public Sunday afternoons only, weather permitting, May through October, at $2 a person.

It is possible to get to Muscoot Farm by taking the Tappan Zee Express to White Plains and then the Harlem 641 train to Katonah, but the timings and durations vary greatly – depending on the days and times.

DEPIERO’S COUNTRY FARM

The main draw at this farm is their fruits and vegetables. The market consists of 40,000 square feet of fruits and vegetables, and their offerings are something special - luscious and robust, fresh and flavorful.

Besides for the huge variety of produce from their own orchards, Depiero’s also imports a vast array of exotic specialty items, from sweet Thai basil to crimini mushrooms. They also carry a wonderful assortment of fresh herbs.

When you visit Depiero’s, it’s worthwhile to pay a visit to their huge craft loft upstairs. The spacious loft is packed with an eclectic array of handmade gifts, cards, and housewares. There you’ll find handmade quilts, hand-stitched stuffed animals, artwork and crafts from local artisans, whimsical kitchen gadgets, and countless other cute tchotchkes.

Depiero’s also has a small (free) petting zoo, including a cow, goats, sheep, chickens, rabbits, ponies, and ducks.

Abma’s family farm, located in Bergen County, NJ, is a short 20-minute trip from Monsey. The 30-acre farm dates back to the 1790s; the homestead and outbuildings are well preserved and kept in their original state. The farm is so charming! The landscape is a patchwork of pastoral hills, exuberant bursts of brightly colored flowers, and rustic barns. It has a quaint country feel that will warm your heart.

The petting zoo has a great variety of animals, including ponies, donkeys, cows, calves, sheep, goats, turkeys, pheasants, and rabbits. There is also a chick hut, where you can peek through panes of glass and see countless adorable yellow baby chicks! (If you are in the mood of a pet, you can occasionally purchase baby chicks for $3.50 each.)

Children are encouraged to pet and stroke the animals, to feed carrot tops to the rabbits, and crackers to the sheep and goats. If you would like to feed the animals, you may purchase animal crackers from the market- a dollar for four crackers, and bunches of carrots for the rabbits. The petting zoo is free, open to the public year ‘round during market hours.

Abma’s Market sells a tremendous variety of fresh produce and eggs for very reasonable prices. There is also a stunning floral nursery and greenhouse at the farm, which sells a variety of beautiful seasonal blooms; it’s worth a visit, even if you don’t intend to purchase any.

There is a comfortable picnic area. We recommend that you bring a simple sandwich lunch from home, and purchase some fruits for dessert. Children love the idea that the apples, nectarines and cherries they are munching on may have been hanging off a tree branch only the night before!

Tevaland’s motto is “Touch and be touched by nature,” and the description of the farm experience is very apt.

Located 15-20 minutes away within Rockland County, Tevaland is a family homestead which aims to create a wonderfully immersive and meaningful way of exploring nature.

They offer a uniquely customized experience for children and adults, (which can also be geared specifically toward individuals with special needs).

In a completely private and inspiring setting, visitors can interact directly with free-roaming animals, engage in outdoor activities and learn the ancient tradition of making goat cheese.

You can visit Tevaland by appointment only, and the duration of each visit is one hour. The farm strongly emphasizes the custom-tailored experience they provide for their visitors. They schedule only one family/ group at a time, and devote themselves completely to make the visit a memorable one.

Lawrence Farms Orchards is a wonderful destination for a day trip, especially if you are accompanied by young children. The sprawling farm has spectacular views over the Hudson Valley. Throughout the changing, growing season, they always offer an impressive variety of produce. During this late summer/ early autumn season, for example, besides for the standard farm offerings, they have the plumpest, juiciest grapes- a novel picking experience! A recent addition to the farm is the “Little Village”- a children’s play area that is reminiscent of an old-fashioned New England farm town. The charming kid-sized village includes a jail, oneroom schoolhouse, fire station, post office, etc.

There is a small petting zoo on site, as well as a swan-populated lake.

Other exciting activities at the farm include a train ride and a hay bale maze. They also sell Cholov Yisroel ice cream (although it’s a tad overpriced).

Admission is $3.00 per person (children under 2 free). Admission does not include train ride or maze. Also, produce is weighed and priced separately. The farm charges a minimal fee for wagon rentals, and also for the cardboard fruit baskets.

Och’s Orchard offers the proper pick-your-own experience; they offer way more than apples!

From week to week, their produce calendar changes to showcase the season’s freshest, juiciest fruits and vegetables. The fields are vast, and almost never crowded.

OCH’S ORCHARD

You can choose either a small bag (quarter bushel, or about 11-12 lb.) for $14.00, or a larger one (half a bushel, or 22-24 lb.) for $27.00. Wagons are available for rent and is highly recommended: apples are heavy! You can also rent a grabber, for $3.00 plus a $5.00 security. The grabber is well worth it, since the best apples are at the top branches.

Also, near the farmer’s market, you can enjoy a pick-your-own flower garden. Children love assembling their own bouquets, and the profusion of vividly colored butterflies that flit over the field make the experience a magical one.

The sweeping views at this orchard are simply spectacular. Pack a picnic lunch and a blanket, and head for the gazebo at the top of the hill for a midday siesta. On your way up, pick a few sunwarmed tomatoes right off the vines to toss into your sandwich.

Och’s has an endearing collection of miniature donkeys and miniature goats, as well as ducks, which can be petted, fed, and admired up close.

Demarest Farms features well-manicured trees, spectacular views, and more than fourteen varieties of apples to pick. Apple picking season at the farm launches September 5, and lasts until November. Demarest also offers visitors tractor-pulled hay wagon rides, a hands-on petting zoo, and an elaborate corn maze.

The variety you will find at Alstede Farms is vast. Over the year, the farm produces over 250 different kinds of fruits and vegetables, from strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, to summer squash, tomatoes, corn, peaches, apples, pumpkins and more. There is also a cut-your-own flower garden.

This 8-acre park was specifically designed as a peaceful sanctuary that promotes feelings of reflection and solemn contemplation. Here you’ll find a grove of nearly 400 white oak trees and the largest manmade waterfalls in the United States. Set within the footprints of the original Twin Towers, the memorial is a tribute to the victims and heroes of the terrorist attacks of February 26, 1993 and September 11, 2001, and their names are inscribed in bronze around the twin memorial pools. In the Memorial Plaza is the Survivor Tree, a callery pear tree that was discovered at Ground Zero, severely damaged. The tree was removed from the rubble, rehabilitated by New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and returned to the Memorial as a symbolic reminder of resilience, survival and rebirth.

A guided walking tour is available for $15, provided by survivors and people closely affected by the September 11 attacks. It can also be bought as a package with museum admission. See below.

The National 9/11 Memorial Museum bears solemn witness to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. Located within the archaeological heart of the original WTC site, the museum serves as the country’s principal institution concerned with exploring the historic implications of that tragic date through state-of-the-art multimedia exhibits, archives and monumental artifacts. Paying reverent homage to the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks, the museum also recognizes the thousands who survived, and all who showed extraordinary courage and compassion in the catastrophe’s aftermath.

The museums can be explored at one’s own pace, or via guided tours. It takes about two hours to cover the entire museum.

To plan your tour well, pick up a suggested pathway brochure from the front desk. There you will get to see suggested routes to take for 60 minutes, 90 minutes, and 120 minutes.

The historical exhibition has three parts: the Day of 9/11, Before 9/11 and After 9/11. It tells the story of what happened on 9/11, including the events at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and the story of Flight 93. The exhibition explores the background leading up to the events and examines their aftermath and continuing implications.

The exhibition may not be appropriate for children under 10 years of age. Adults accompanying younger visitors should exercise discretion.

The memorial exhibition, which is named “In Memoriam”, commemorates the lives of those who perished on September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993 and provides visitors with the opportunity to learn about the men, women and children who died.

Foundation Hall is a room of massive scale, which houses both the last column and the slurry wall.

History comes alive upon the property of Philipsburg Manor, a preserved pre-Civil War farmstead depicting a time when slavery was an integral part of daily farm life in the United States. Slavery was dominant in the south, so it was fascinating to hear the riveting, yet little-known story of enslavement in the colonial north.

The tour guides, dressed in colonial-era attire, make the experience that much more real. Going from mill to kitchen to slave quarters, it is not hard to envision the slaves of yesteryear performing their backbreaking labor in the heat of the summer and the winter cold. Get a peek into the personal life of a typical slave by the preserved chambers to visit, with artifacts and touchable reproductions, and the many visual and informational details you will be supplied about their treatment.

You can enjoy the open nature, too, at the working gristmill surrounded by the rushing sound of water and the creaking of the wooden gears upon a serene, pastoral setting.

There are many hands-on activities that children can enjoy, like shelling beans, turning flax into linen, and threshing wheat that enable them to experience the era fully.

See chart A commuter ferry which transports passengers between Haverstraw and Ossining, this boat only operates on weekdays in the early morning and mid afternoon to late evening hours. This fifteen-minute boat ride upon the Hudson (or half hour if a round trip is taken) with the ocean mist and calming water as a backdrop is a refreshing and enjoyable outing. Check out the information on Louis Engel Waterfront Park, which is right by the Ossining port.

The Tappan Zee Express travels from the Spring Valley Bus Terminal to the Tarrytown Metro-North Station, where a train can be caught to Ossining. See chart for schedules and fares.

The New Jersey Coastline is unmatched for its impressive oceanfront, with its numerous beaches and boardwalks. It spans 130 beautiful miles of islands, bays and majestic lighthouses. There is access to the shore in countless places throughout New Jersey, but we will focus on the boardwalk behind the Ocean Place Resort in Long Branch. With a bit of exploring, you can discover many more oceanfront sites.

The NJ Transit’s Long Branch station is just a four-minute bus ride or a fifteen-minute walk to the Ocean Place Resort. Behind the Ocean Place hotel is a boardwalk and open access to the ocean. Mountain Adventure Park Jiminy’s Mountain Adventure Park has a unique selection of rides, very different from the usual amusement park stomach turners. Here, the crisp mountain air lends fun and relaxation to this memorable experience.

The Mountain Coaster (the first of its kind in the East Coast) provides thousands of feet of twisting, turning fun through the woods. You can control your speed for a leisurely ride or a thrilling one at 23 mph. Their Alpine Slides take you through tunnels, dips, and curves. 2 hours and 49 minutes Mt. Greylock is the highest peak in Massachusetts at 3,491 feet. The views from atop Greylock are unbelievable; you can access those views by driving up the 8-mile road to the summit.

(While hiking up the rugged Appalachian Trail is also an option, it is an all-day endeavor and suitable only for experienced climbers in excellent shape.)

The drive up takes you through a thick alpine forest and eventually to fantastic overviews of the valley below. As you ascend Mt. Greylock, the valley gets smaller and smaller.

The panorama is breathtaking; the surrounding towns seem like quaint Swiss Alp villages rather than suburban townships of modern America. If the natural summit perch wasn’t enough, a 100-foot tall lighthouse with an observation deck seals the deal. (Visitors to Greylock felt that the climb inside the lighthouse wasn’t worth the unclear views that the foggy windows provided, and that the scene from outside on the summit was that much nicer.)

The drive up takes 20 minutes. There is parking on the summit for $3 a car for non-residents of Massachusetts.

Plan your visit to Greylock on a very clear day. There isn’t much to see when the weather is overcast.

Rowboats, kayaks, pedal boats, canoes, fishing boats, power boats, and pontoons are available for rent at Onota Boat Livery.

The Breakers, the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages,” is a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn-of-the-century America.

The property, home to a wooden house called The Breakers, was purchased by Cornelius Vanderbilt II, a grandson of Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, who commissioned architect Richard Morris Hunt to design this 70-room Italian Renaissance-style palazzo. He directed an international team of craftsmen, artisans, and the greatest artists to assist with the furnishing, fixtures, and sculpting.

The backyard is a sprawling manicured lawn, set against the backdrop of the glorious ocean. It is absolutely enchanting!

Newport is most famously known for its impressive mansions. During the Gilded Age, Newport, Rhode Island became the summer playground for the rich and famous, and many prominent and wealthy families, like the Vanderbilts and the Astors built their summer “cottages” there, opulent and magnificent mansions that were used as their summer homes. Ten of them are open for touring and one is open as a museum, while others have been converted to upscale hotels.

We will be featuring the two most popular visitor choices, the Vanderbilt Mansions.

The Breakers and Marble House are both toured via selfguided audio tours, with a choice of a main tour or a children’s tour.

It is amazing and so significant that the very first president of the United States traveled to Rhode Island to visit this shul.

He reassured the congregation in a warm eloquent letter that the Yidden, “Stock of Abraham,” are a very valued and welcomed community to the United States. He promised these exile-persecuted Yidden all the freedoms proffered by the constitution. This original letter, written In Washington’s elegant cursive writing, is prominently displayed in the synagogue. You will be moved when you see it.

While in the Shul, take note of the trapdoor, which the Sefardi Yidden built behind the bimah. This tradition stemmed from their horrific experience during the Inquisition. See the chart on Minyan schedules.
