I want to bring to your attention that on the cover of the issue of September 3, 2015 you have a boy on a bike. The message sent is - it’s okay to ride a bike without a helmet.

This is against all safety rules. We want our children to see better role models.

While I greatly enjoy your publication from cover to cover, I am disappointed that the serials by Sury Spitzer have been discontinued. I followed along both Dina and Esther with interest, for even though I’m no longer in the category of a “kid,” it was full of history brought alive so vividly.

I subscribe to various publications and usually scan the food section with interest and appreciation of the novel ideas food columnists come up with, but don’t take it any further. I must say that The Monsey View changed that. Your recipes are so doable and I feel like I have most of the ingredients in my pantry. And the best part is that my kids won’t ask me, “What’s this?” upon seeing what’s for dinner. Like F.S., I, too, am most appreciative for your publication uniquely and courageously giving us Monseyites a legitimate “voice,” no matter how sensitive the subject.

Our Father, Our King

Just what about the month of Elul has prepared us for this awesome, elevated moment? Even pre-school children can answer with confidence that Elul was all about teshuva, tefillah and tzedaka.

But as mature adults with years of learning and life experience under our belts, we must beware of this unacceptably simplistic understanding of what is at stake.

Is it a matter of: Teshuva?

Check. Tefillah? Check. Tzedaka? Check. Send. All ready for Rosh Hashana. Not so fast. And not anywhere so simple.

True, our generation has become witness to the diminution of far-reaching, significant concepts into meaningless slogans. Convictions of profound importance have

been reduced to elementary thoughts by the very progress that was means to educate and enlighten. Nothing is above text abbreviation.

And with this disengaged mentality, everything of consequence is lost in a sea of superficial thought.

In spite of the alluring beeps and signals emanating from countless palms and pockets, we cannot allow ourselves to be enslaved or numbed by them. As ehrliche Yidden, we categorically defy this reckless and thoughtless approach to everything on this journey we call life. Most certainly as it affects Avodas Hashem.

Elul is no trivial checklist to frum Yidden. It is a month of introspection, wherein a deliberate review is made of one’s deeds of twelve months; forgiveness granted; forgiveness sought. It is an inward reach and upward climb, far, far removed from the small-mindedness and hevel havalim, the vanity and shallowness of the world around us.

Elul is spent in reflection - bkovad rosh - an expression which has no equivalent in the English language, connoting thoughtful and thorough consideration of a serious issue and its ramifications. Its lack of equal expression in English appropriately indicates the absence of the concept in a morally declin-

ing society.

In the week preceding Rosh Hashana, Yidden across the globe awaken to the predawn call of Selichos. It signals the eleventh hour for serious supplication to our Melech Rachman. A united voice, the kol Yaakov, straining, tear-choked to reach the Kisa Hakovod, cites the zchus of our Avos upon which we rely as we stand at the Shaarei Shomayim.

Rosh Hashana arrives on a cloud of holiness, hovering above a nation standing in white priestly clothing. Every Yid is granted a personal audience before the King of Kings. The Baal Tefilla stands as the worth emissary, intoning the collective tefillos of his kehilla.

Shacharis. The awesome silence gives way to the strains of a niggun, at first soft and hesitant, gaining volume and depth. Haaa…..floating upward, outward, heavenward. Syllables invested with heart and soul, humility and shame, hope and yearning.

It is the voice of enstranged children returned to their Beloved Father, wayward subjects restored loyally to their Merciful King.

The holy words give voice to our eternal bond…

YOM TOV HALACHOS for

Women

The frenzied Yom Tov shopping , preparing, cooking, and baking have reached a feverish pitch.

The Monsey View has invited a noted Monsey personality, the Nitra Rebbetzin, Reb. Y. Weissmandel, to compile a list of practical halachos especially geared for women.

May we all merit to be inscribed in the book of life, and may we merit a gut, gebentcht year.

Hilchos Rosh Hashana •

Al Pi Halacha, all men above bar mitzvah are mechuyav to hear the shofar. Chazal tell us that all women accepted Tekiyas Shofar upon themselves and are therefore also mechuyav to hear Tekiyas Shofar.

•

A woman is mechuyav to hear the minimum of 30 tekiyas. Many women have accepted upon themselves to hear 100 tekiyas as is the chiyuv of men.

•

The tekiyas do not have to be consecutive, meaning, if one is interrupted in the middle of Tekiyos Shofar, she may hear other tekiyas at a different place in the davening to make up the 30 tekiyas that are her chiyuv, but she is obligated to hear each tekiyah without interruptions. If, for example, her child cries in the middle of Tekiyas Shofar, causing the mother to miss some tekiyah or part of one tekiyah for example, a part of the tekiyah of Tashrat (Tekiya, Shevarim,Truya,Tekiya) she is not yoitze and has to hear one whole Tashrat again.

The Second Night of Rosh Hashana •

If a woman is unable to hear the tekiyos in shul, and someone is blowing shofar for her, the person blowing should make the brochos.

If the person blowing has already fulfilled his own chiyuv, the woman should ask a sheila regarding reciting the brocha herself.

•

The mitzvah to hear the shofar blowing requires kavana to fulfill the mitzvah.

•

The baal tokaya (shofar blower) recites two bruchos .The kehilla has to answer amein to both of them.

•

One should not say “Baruch Hu Uvaruch Sh’mo” to these brochos.

•

One should stand during the brochos and for all the tekiyas.

•

It is assur to speak from the beginning of the first brocho until ashrei.

•

If one wants to be yoitze all the tekiyas, it is forbidden to speak until after shmone esrai of Mussaf.

Tashlich •

Tashlich is a minhag and not a chiyuv.

•

While it is preferable to do Tashlich on Rosh Hashana, one can also do so during the Aseres Yemai Teshuva.

•

It is preferable to say Tashlich at a natural body of water.

•

The original minhag was to say Tashlich near a body of water where there are fish.

•

Some have the minhag to say Tashlich on Yud Gimmel Middos.

•

If one cannot make it to a body of water to say Tashlich it is recommended to say Tashlich wherever one happens to be.

•

Both Rosh Hashana days are considered by Chazal to be the same Yom Tov, a “yoma arichata” (even in Eretz Yisroel); the two days are halachically considered “one long day”. The question therefore arises as to whether one should make the brocha of Shehechiyanu the second night of Rosh Hashana. To remedy this concern, the poskim suggest that one should either wear a new garment (one worthy of a Shehechiyanu, for example, an important garment not bought frequently) or have a new fruit worthy of a Shehechiyanu. If one doesn’t have one of these items, a Shehechianu should be recited anyway.

•

If possible, women should have in mind the new garment or fruit when saying Shehechiyanu during licht tzinden (lighting candles).

•

If someone wore a new garment the first day, and for some reason did not make a Shehechiyanu on it, they can still recite a Shehechiyanu on it the second night (if they are still wearing it).

•

Poskim have pointed out that there may be an issue of making a Shehechiyanu on a fruit that is available all year round, and as nowadays most fruits are available all year round, it is advisable to find a more exotic fruit.

When I left Regina’s store, I was 250 lira lighter. She had taken the money with a selfrighteous sniff, and I noticed how finely sculpted her features were, pretty before they became contorted by self-righteousness. “What did you sell?” she asked.

I took out a list, crinkled and softened by touch. On it, I had marked every item I’d sold. I read it to her, and she scratched some numbers on her page. “That’ll be 50,” she finally said. I handed her the 50 lira, which she placed in a metal container under her desk, by the sound of my coins now clanging into her possession. Then she showed me some new items she brought in this month, fancy bronze buttons with a ship’s anchor motif and flattened tassels. I took some home to see how they sold. I also stocked up on my favorite black fabric. Regina told me the striped fabric for kaftans

would arrive from overseas within the next few weeks.

Then I left. I hurried home, my fingers massaging the few coins I still had in my pocket, leaving their metallic scent on my fingers. When I arrived, there were already seven women standing in my kitchen, and I couldn’t inch past them even if I tried, until a heavyset woman moved out of my house to let me in. Malka was serving the customers, answering their questions in her young, overeager tone.

I handed her the 50 lira, which she placed in a metal container under her desk, by the sound of my coins now clanging into her possession.

The store was only getting busier, which was a good thing, considering that next month, my 30 lira take-home profit would grow to more. I pulled the new tassels out of my bag to show my clients.

Golda swooped down on them and demanded eight,

two for each of her daughters’ dresses. After that, everyone else also bought some, aside from the silent woman I never got to know, but who was now sifting through the buttons.

The tassels were nearly gone and we were still only at Rosh Chodesh. I could always go get more. As women drifted out of the house, more women, hesitating at the door, entered and started choosing.

I noticed the sun was starting to blush, a sure sign it was getting shy, then tired. I had given a good, filling lunch, but did that mean I was exempt from dinner? I’d have to call the children in from outdoors and hand them a moitzikeh of bread. But right now, Esther was here; she wanted those famous tassels.

“You know what,” I said. “I brought in exactly 20. But I think I only sold 18.” I consulted my list, the one I’d kept painstakingly, even while women crowded around me, willing me to help them, fast.

I had given a good, filling lunch, but did that mean I was exempt from dinner?

“Where are the last two tassels?” I turned to Malka’la, who had been cutting fabrics, counting buttons, and serving clients all this

time.

“I took them,” she said. “I put them away when I saw they were selling out. I want them for my trousseau.”

“Please bring them out for this woman,” I said.

Malka looked at me and didn’t move. Her every fiber stood rigid in protest.

I looked back, filling my eyes with directives.

Fall for color

She relented. She went into the room, scooped the tassels out from between her mattress and her bed planks. She smoothed them out as she came back to the kitchen. Her eyes were twin reservoirs of furious hurt.

I looked away. Esther shrugged, paid, and left, a heavy bag of material slapping her side as she walked away.

I turned to Rivka Bender, my next client.

Malka wasn’t there to help anymore. She must have gone out. But in the lull when Rivka left and Gittel Broida was still choosing, I heard heaving sounds from Malka’s room.

“Malka!” I said, rushing into the bedroom to find her face buried in her pillow, her entire body shuddering with her cries. “What happened?!” How could I spare her the burden of having to tell me I’d hurt her? “Is it about the tassels?”

She continued to cry. One ear attuned to the kitchen, I heard the rustling of someone who

had finished her purchases, was now browsing, and would eventually experience buyer’s remorse if I didn’t rush in to collect my fees.

I patted Malka’la, who felt stiff and unyielding, and went out to the kitchen. My guilt was still with Malka in the bedroom while I wrote everything down and walked the woman out, but I stilled it with a double dose of reason and anger. Why did Malka’la think she could just

Perele came running into the house, her face pulled taut in shock, the hair of her braid disengaged to form a lion-like mane around her forehead. “Mama!” She pulled me by the arm. “It’s Chuna!

Come!”

Every bone ached as I got up. But a good dose of anger shot through me.

What was that child up to now? Adrenaline coursed through me as I rushed out of the house into the twilight.

“What happened?!” I asked Perele, who was two steps faster.

She stopped. She was trembling, crying, unable to inch closer. I stopped, stood, looked, saw.

Had this happened at a time when I still had the space to feel, I’d cry about it for a minimum of a week.

“Chuna!”

But of course he didn’t respond, didn’t even flinch, his limbs contorted under him, a spattering of blood surrounding him on the cobblestones. “Chuna!” I cried.

“Chuna!”

I didn’t know if I could touch him. Somebody took me by the shoulders, turned me away, thrust a glass of water to my lips. From afar, an ambulance wail drew closer. Perhaps that meant he was still alive. Around us, a circle of children and anxious adults stood, waiting. Three yungerleit crouched down next to Chuna, attending to him. A red motorcycle arrived.

The ambulance arrived. Zelda stood behind me, patting my arms vigorously, but I couldn’t feel it. Chuna was placed on a stretcher, and I followed, woodenly, as he was lifted through the back doors of the ambulance.

The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program for children under the age of three who are either suspected of having or at risk for developmental delays or disabilities. Potentially eligible children must be referred to the county program (Rockland County, 845-364-2032) to receive EIP services. EIP is funded

Saucy Flanken or Ribs

Easy Baked Sesame Chicken Seasoned

This recipe works equally well over flanken or barbeque ribs. It’s one of my favorite ways to serve meat and makes it onto my menu year after year.

6 - 8 flanken or 8 - 10 barbeque ribs 1/2 cup soy sauce 1 cup apricot jam 1/2 cup ketchup 4 tablespoons oil 2 tablespoons mustard 2 cloves frozen crushed garlic

1. Place the meat into a parchment paper-lined 9 x 13 pan.

2. Combine all the sauce ingredients and pour over the meat.

Marinate overnight.

3. Bake on 350, covered for 1 1/2 hours.

I love the fact that this sesame chicken is not fried.

It really has the best of both worlds; all of the flavor and none of the fat.

4 chicken cutlets, cut into nugget size 1 cup flour 2 eggs 1 1/2 cups flavored corn flake crumbs 3/4 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup water 2 tablespoons mustard 2 tablespoons oil 2 tablespoons ketchup 2 tablespoons vinegar 1/4 cup sesame seeds

Vinegar can be substituted with lemon juice for those who don’t use it at this time of year.

1. Preheat oven to 350.

2. Bread the chicken cutlets in flour, egg and then corn flake crumbs. Place the breaded chicken nuggets onto a cookie sheet.

3. In a medium saucepan, combine brown sugar, water, mustard, oil, ketchup and vinegar. Bring to a boil and pour over chicken nuggets.

Sprinkle sesame seeds over sauce and bake uncovered for 30 minutes.

Veal Marsala

This is the most heavenly recipe I have made by far. The aroma permeates the whole house while it is cooking and is seriously a treat for the senses. The recipe calls for chicken soup; do not use consommé instead because it severely compromises the taste.

4 veal chops 1/2 cup flour 1/4 cup oil 2 large onion, sliced 1 box fresh mushrooms, sliced salt and pepper 2 cups chicken soup 1/4 cup white wine 2 tablespoons flour

1. Preheat the oven to 350 2. Place the flour into a bag. Dip each veal chop into the bag of flour and set aside.

3. In a large pan, heat the oil. Sear the veal chops in the oil for about 3 minutes on each side. Place into a lined 9 x 13 pan.

4. In the same pan, sauté the sliced onions and the sliced mushrooms. Sauté for about 10 minutes until wilted. When done, add salt and pepper to taste. Then add the chicken soup and the wine.

Bring to a boil and add the 2 tablespoons of flour to thicken the mixture.

5. Pour the chicken soup and onionmushroom mixture over the seared veal chops. Cover very tightly with silver foil and bake for at least 3 hours.

9/11 MEMORIAL MUSEUM

This 8-acre park is a supremely contemplative sanctuary, composed of a grove of nearly 400 white oak trees and the largest manmade waterfalls in the United States. Set within the footprints of the original Twin Towers, the memorial is a tribute to the victims and heroes of the terrorist attacks of February 26, 1993 and September 11, 2001, and their names are inscribed in bronze around the twin memorial pools. In the memorial plaza is the Survivor Tree, a callery pear tree that was discovered at Ground Zero severely damaged. It was removed from the rubble, rehabilitated by New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, and returned to the memorial as a living reminder of resilience, survival and rebirth.

A guided walking tour is available provided by survivors and people closely affected by the September 11 attacks for $15. It can also be bought as a package with museum admission. See below.

The National 9/11 Memorial Museum bears solemn witness to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993. Located within the archaeological heart of the original WTC site, the museum serves as the country’s principal institution concerned with exploring the historic implications of that tragic date, through state-of-the-art multimedia exhibits, archives and monumental artifacts. Paying reverent homage to the nearly 3,000 victims of the attacks, the museum also recognizes the thousands who survived, and all who showed extraordinary courage & compassion in the catastrophe’s aftermath.

The museums can be explored at one’s own pace, or via guided tours. It takes about two hours to cover the entire museum.

The historical exhibition has three parts: the Day of 9/11, Before 9/11 and After 9/11. It tells the story of what happened on 9/11, including the events at the World Trade Center and the Pentagon and the story of Flight 93. The exhibition explores the background leading up to the events and examines their aftermath and continuing implications.

The exhibition may not be appropriate for children under 10 years of age. Adults accompanying younger visitors should exercise discretion.

The memorial exhibition, which is named In Memoriam, commemorates the lives of those who perished on September 11, 2001 and February 26, 1993 and provides visitors with the opportunity to learn about the men, women and children who died.

Foundation Hall is a room of massive scale, which houses both the last column and the slurry wall.

There are also live talks where you can hear the stories and remembrance of the people who were there.

Introducing a 3-part series to infuse us with the joy and beauty of our heritage during these inspiring days leading up to Sukkos.

In Part 1 the traditional is celebrated. A table is set with conservative white lace linens and minimum decor. Simple china plates and crystal stemware set the tone for an unadorned yet elegant Yom Tov meal.

Part 2 will bring to life a very different approach to setting the Yom Tov table. Though elegant in its own right, its style will motivate and influence those who have minimal means to pull together a table setting that will wow in a spectacular way.

The last column in this series will present Part 3: creating a floral extravaganza for any type of table you choose to set.

This pictorial will coincide with Erev Sukkos preparations, offering fantastical flower ideas to beautify the temporary abode we proudly call home for seven days of Sukkah joy.

To set this table: I arrived to Sari’s home early on a Friday morning to set the tables seen on these pages. Instead of the expected chaos typical of a florist’s domain, a calm and serene Sari greeted us at the door.

She moved gracefully from task to task, working with her floral designer one moment then moving props and dishes with me the next.

She creatively filled vases and turned out

stunning centerpieces for various events while we worked. Her talent seemed so effortless and yet so outstanding.

With the pleasant environment provided

by Sari and her crew, and the tasteful aromas of her husband’s cooking in the background, a day of work hardly felt like it at all.

IF YOU HAVE THAT AWARENESS, YOU HAVE GOOD MANNERS, NO MATTER WHICH FORK YOU USE.” I – Formal Table Setting At first glance, a formal table setting can be intimidating because there are so many forks, spoons, and knives, all for different courses.

However, do not be overwhelmed, as there is a simple system which can be easily mastered.

If you take a moment to study the layout, you will see that the meal starts with the cutlery on the outer side, and works its way inward with each subsequent course.

When setting the table, the forks will be on your left. Knives and spoons will be placed on your right. At the top of your plate will be a dessert spoon and dessert fork. When dessert is served, slide them down to the sides of the dessert plate: fork on the left; spoon on the right.

II – R.S.V.P.: Classy Arrival

Red wine is served in a glass with a round bowl and fairly short stem. Hold it at the base of the bowl. It should be served at room temperature. White wine is normally served in a larger glass with a longer stem. Hold it at the base of the stem. The same applies to all chilled wines. The order of the wine glasses begins with the one closest to you: white wine (fish/chicken course) red wine (meat course) and water goblet.

Arrive approximately 10 minutes within the prearranged time. Arriving too early is not proper as the hostess might still be rushing around in preparation mode. Coming in too late is also not as welcomes, as it can bring about a last-minute frenzy in the host’s home. A minor but significant deed would be to greet the help working in the house when you arrive. A simple and polite “hello” shows respect for another person, and fine manners is actually all about respecting those around you.

For a milchig meal being served, there will be a butter knife located near the butter dish. Use it to transfer butter to your side plate. Your butter knife should be lying diagonally across your side plate. Never use the knife with the butter dish to butter bread.

Salad may be served before or after the main course. The placement of the salad fork will give you a clue.

A gift for your host or hostess is a lovely way to thank them for their hospitality and is always appreciated. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or expensive; simply consider what the hostess likes and not just what you like. In some traditions, a hostess gift is considered obligatory, while in other families a gift is brought only on special occasions. If you have a few extra minutes to wrap it, even if you only use tissue or a decorative bag, it adds to the gesture.

Jar of Gourmet Jam - this is especially nice when presented with muffins from a favorite bakery.

Bestselling Book - read a book recently that you just couldn’t put down? Bring a copy of it for the hostess.

III – Table Etiquette : At the Table Seating Placement and Procedure Follow the lead and sit only when the host and most other guests have been seated. Once seated, unfold the napkin and place it on your lap. Keep it on your lap throughout the meal. Wait until the host begins to eat before you start to partake of the meal. As the meal progresses, do one thing at a time. If you would like a drink, temporarily rest your utensils on the edge of the plate. When eating, rest your other hand on your lap. When not doing either, rest both your hands on your lap.

Napkins, Crockery, and Cutlery Your napkin should always be placed on your lap. If it is small you may open it out fully. If it is large it should be kept folded in half with the fold toward you. Keep your napkin on your lap until you leave the table. When you leave the table, place your napkin in loose folds at the left side of your plate, never on top of the plate.

The fork is held in the left hand, and the knife in the right hand. The knife is used to cut food and to help carry food to the fork. The fork is held, tines down. There should be no shifting of cutlery. When you are finished eating, soup spoons and dessert spoons should be placed on the side of the plate or bowl; never leave them in the bowl. Do not push your plate away or stack your dishes.

IV - Obstacle-Free Courses Challah/Bread It’s the little things that count with manners, including the proper way to eat bread.

When the challah loaf is on the cutting board, use the accompanying bread knife to cut the challah into slices.

Grasp the loaf with a clean napkin while you’re cutting it.

Slice thinly and offer to serve those sitting next to you. Break off smaller pieces from the challah slice as you start the meal. If you like your challah eaten with a spread, use a knife to smear, but only on small pieces at a time.

If there is a main plate for sauce or broth, refrain from dipping your challah directly into the dish. Instead, spoon some of the dip or broth into your plate and enjoy to your heart’s content – without double dipping on public property. And always put the challah on a fork to do the dipping. Never use your fingers.

Fish The only exception to the rule is when eating fish – no knife required.

Fish can be cut with the edge of a fork; there is no need for a knife. Be aware that there may still be a few bones in the fish, no matter how carefully it is prepared. If you do happen to find a small bone in your mouth, you can attempt to remove it with your thumb and forefinger as nonchalantly as possible, with napkin in hand. Always avoid putting the fish on your fork until you are prepared to eat it, as you don’t want to be caught talking to somebody with your fishy fork in mid-air.

you don’t make when you’re eating soup.

Soup served in a soup dish is eaten with the soup spoon.

Supposing the taste is to your liking, and you want to get the last bit of it, it is fine to be seen tipping the dish away from you in order to collect the very last spoonful. You are paying a subtle compliment to your hostess by this demonstrating how good it is. Surprisingly, it is proper to drink thin soups served in cups, as you would with tea or coffee. (A cup is defined as a bowl that has one or two handles.) However, if there are vegetables or noodles left in the bottom, eat those with the spoon, rather than struggle unattractively to make them slide from the cup into your mouth.

If soup appears too hot to taste, stir it in the bowl, but never blow into the soup. It is deemed proper to first taste the dish before adding any spice to the food. I guess this is along the same lines of: give everything in life a chance. If someone at the table asks you to pass the salt, pass it along with the pepper. Think of the salt and pepper as a pair, where one does not move without the other. This is a sign of good breeding in fine dining circles.

Do not leave your utensil in the bowl between spoonfuls.

Rest the spoon on the saucer or soup bowl while conversing with others at the table, and then again when finished with the course.

Salad Chocolate comes from cocoa, which is a tree. That makes it a plant. Chocolate is salad! In any case…

Salad is usually served before or after the main course. If you are served large pieces of kale,

or a whole wedge of lettuce, cut one bite at a time, using the salad knife. Don’t slice and dice the entire salad at once, or toss it. It is preferable to cut large salad pieces than to attempt to stuff large bites of food in your mouth.

Main Dish The most important thing about meat is how you cut it.

If you see something from the main serving dish that you would like to sample, it is not refined to lean across the table to reach for it. Instead, ask the one sitting closest to your seat to pass the dish to you. If you are the one asked to pass a dish to another, it is polite to pass it along first before helping yourself.

When the main platter contains a combination of foods, help yourself to a moderate sized portion. If there is a bed of lettuce or some other garnish on your serving, remove the entire portion to your plate. If the platter contains pre-sliced foods, take only one portion.

As a courtesy to other guests, make sure to leave enough food on the tray to give others a choice of portions, too.

Perhaps food will be presented to you that is not to your liking.

On such occasion, it is rather polite to make some attempt to eat it anyway. At the very least, cut the food into smaller pieces and move it around your plate a bit. It is acceptable to leave some food on your plate when done eating. On the other hand, it is not polite to wipe your plate so clean as to appear you have not eaten in days.

Dessert Dessert is usually the favorite course of the meal; there’s always something to love about it.

The best desserts are those that include cake, pie, or pastry served with ice cream on the side. Which raises the question: do you use the dessert spoon or fork? Or both?

The dessert utensils are found above the plate in a proper setting. When dessert is served, move down the fork to the left of the plate, and the spoon to the right. The spoon serves as a knife for the dessert portion of the meal, and the fork is used to steady and move the food around. If only a standalone dessert is served, such as cake, pie, or sorbet, then you would use a fork for the solid dessert, and only a spoon for the liquid dessert.

Note: When fine dining, a sorbet is served after the first course as a palate cleanser.

This is not dessert. Eat it before moving on to the next course.

Hold a glass by its stem, even if it’s only water you are drinking. Though the premise for this began as a way to prevent the hand from warming the wine in the glass, it is now the prevalent way of drinking with class, no matter what the beverage inside.

If you are served a hot tea, you may want to test the temperature before drinking from the glass. Use a spoon to dip into the tea, and then take a single sip from the side of the spoon. If indeed the beverage turned out too hot, and you feel discomfort while at the table, take a quick sip of cool water to soothe the palate.

others, be careful not to gesture with a fork or knife in your hand. Though this tip stems from the ages when a knife was considered a weapon, its connotations still stand true.

Keep mouth closed while chewing, as it’s not pleasant for those at the table to observe one talk with a mouth full of food. Not only is it impolite, it is also a choking hazard. Sit up straight, with your hands in your lap between courses. No slouching in your seat, as this makes you appear uninterested in what is going on around you.

If a fork or spoon drops during the meal, pick it up in such way as not to cause any disturbance at the table. Otherwise, leave it where it dropped and ask your host for a new fork or spoon.

As soon as the spoons and forks have been used, they should never again rest on the table for the duration of the meal. Place the cutlery on the rim of your plate between bites, taking care that it does not touch the tablecloth.

VI - Table Adieu When one is done eating, placing your napkin on the table signals that it is okay for your plate to be removed. Tuck the napkin partly folded to the left of your place setting. Never leave a crumpled napkin on the table, even if it’s a paper napkin.

When clearing used plates from the table, do not stack one dirty plate on top of the other. Simply carry out one plate in each hand. Also, never empty the remains of one plate into another plate while at the table and in the presence of other guests.

Complimenting the food after a meal is a gesture always appreciated by the hostess.

Elaborate on the food that pleased you most and acknowledge the efforts that made the meal so truly delectable. Thank your hostess upon leaving. It is good breeding to send a personal thank-you card or short note that expresses your gratitude again a few days after your visit, preferably within 48 hours.

Don’ts and Dos when addressing issues that crop up with teachers

When a child comes home and speaks enthusiastically about the day’s events, all is well. But what if a child comes home upset, frustrated or angry? More specifically, what if the child is upset with the teacher? The child feels he was punished for something he didn’t do, is being picked on unfairly, or was publicly shamed. A child gets a mark that she feels she didn’t deserve, homework on material she didn’t learn, or a last-minute test is assigned.

What then? How do we respond in a way that helps a child gain perspective yet nurtures the hard-earned communication? And most important, how do we actually address the issue at hand?

Don’t be the “Mama Bear.”

When a child is hurt, our ‘mama-bear instinct,’ that fierce feeling of, “I will protect my child at all costs,” shifts into high gear. Acting on this can lead to some ineffective responses like: Blaming the child; “I don’t understand. Why didn’t you . . . ?” “The teacher is right.

There’s no excuse for your behavior.”

Offering immediate solutions; “So you’ll tell your teacher that. . .”

Jumping to conclusions; “The teacher is so inexperienced.”

Blaming the teacher; “How

could she do that? Didn’t she realize . . . ?” and calling the teacher in the heat of emotion to ‘give it to her.’

Aside for being ineffective, these responses also inhibit communication and convey wrong chinuch messages.

Do be the Shelter in the Storm.

Our role as mothers is to keep our children safe. Let’s drop the ‘mama bear’ metaphor however, and choose to be the shelter in the storm instead, by offering the safety and reassurance of our supporting presence. This happens through focused, non-judgmental listening and validation. “I see. That must have been very frustrating.”

Validation is not agreement.

It says, “I’m here for you. I understand you.”

Don’t create a kvetch.

to ensure that in doing so we don’t create our own little kvetches. In preparation for last week’s article, a few parents expressed this sentiment: “My daughter shares her school day, but it’s

always complaints.”

While some children may be intense by nature or experience a lot of unpleasantness, let’s make sure that the kvetching isn’t an attitude that develops because of our response to it.

When we interview for pain, meaning, ask questions that bring up hurtful situations, and reserve quality, focused attention for when our children are upset, we give lots of reinforcement for kvetching, thereby ingraining this unwanted behavior.

Do give your child the chance to develop her own wings.

The key is balance. Let’s make sure that we give at least as much quality attention to the everyday occurrences our children share, as to the negative ones.

Let’s take it even further.

Let’s use the negative experiences as opportunities to help our children grow, mature and develop wings.

Once we’ve heard them out and validated (don’t forget this first step), let’s help our children develop coping skills and problem solving tools to aid them on their journey to healthy, independent adulthood.

Here are some skills that we can gradually add to our children’s copingwith-hurtfulexperiences repertoire.

1. Believing in themselves and their innate goodness

2. Giving the other party the benefit of the doubt

3. Putting

things perspective

into

4. Strengthening our trust in Hashem

5. Finding positive even in hard times

6. Being solution-oriented 7. Solving

problems by generating solutions and implementing them

Calling the Teacher Once we’re past the initial rush of emotion, most of us avoid calling the teacher.

We don’t want to seem overprotective and we’re afraid to impose.

When we interview for pain, meaning, ask questions that bring up hurtful situations, and reserve quality, focused attention for when our children are upset, we give lots of reinforcement for kvetching, thereby ingraining this unwanted behavior.

However evasion is necessarily prudent.

To better assess whether or not to call the teacher, ask yourself the following questions:

EDUCATIONAL Things Teachers Wish That Parents Knew Is my child equipped to handle this herself or is it too complicated or difficult?

How serious is the issue? Is it just a minor distress that the child will get over quickly or is it something that might linger or get worse if not addressed?

What might a phone call to the teacher accomplish?

Will it promote adversity or goodwill? Will it be productive and generate solutions?

If, after calm evaluation, a phone call seems like it could produce results, don’t procrastinate. Make the call.

Sometimes we slip a statement that sound like an attack. Can we then blame the teacher for feeling defensive?

The One Big Don’t: Don’t Put the Teacher on the Defensive There are two stances we can take when we speak to the teacher. One is the ‘battle stance’ that emerges from the ‘go-get-the-teacher’ instinct.

The other is the ‘team stance,’ which acknowledges that molding our children is a team effort that involves the parents and the teacher, who both have the child’s best interests in mind. Even when we adopt the team stance, Mama Bear still lurks.

Sometimes she rears her head and we slip a statement that sound like an attack. Can we then blame the teacher for feeling defensive? A

conversation in which the parties alternate between attacking, deflecting blame and defending is a subtle (hopefully) battle is not one in which the child wins.

Do begin the conversation with a compliment The first step to promoting goodwill – a compliment!

Do attempt to build a partnership throughout the conversation Back to the team stance, let’s prepare ourselves mentally before the conversation with different ways to promote a sense of collaboration. One way is to attempt beforehand to give the teacher the benefit of the doubt. Teachers are human. Humans make mistakes. Our children see things from a childish, limited perspective. There’s probably a lot more to the story than we know. Let’s also resolve to make an effort to understand and respect the teacher’s position so that there can be a meeting of minds.

During the conversation, let’s express these sentiments in words. “I’m sure that there was a good reason . . .” “We’re in this together. I know you want what’s best for Chavy and so do I.” Do neutral reporting Once we’ve given the teacher the benefit of the doubt, here’s the next step to move the conversation forward without making the teacher feel defensive. As opposed to blaming and forcing the teacher to explain herself, i.e.

“What happened today?” put

Teachers do want to know if there’s a problem, and I think a parent can discuss any problem, real or perceived, as long as the goal is to solve the problem, rather than put the teacher in the hot seat! Hennie Marder As the parent, you are Number One in your kids’ lives. Even if they spend much more of their time in school, you are the most powerful player in their lives.

Along the same lines as #1, we need to be on the same team. You can’t just tell the teacher “fix my kid” or “fix my kid’s issue.” We need you on board. (E.g. don’t think I can improve his grades in English if at home he hears that you consider the English program a joke. He knows. I know. etc.)

Simply say what happened as you or your child saw it. Keep your own emotions (disbelief, incredulity, frustration) out of the report, however reporting on the child’s emotions as is okay. Keep the report neutral and casual. “I wanted to share . . .”

MONSEYREBRANDED The Rebrand Series of Checklists

Recap: In the past articles we’ve discussed many theories in marketing.

Here we present to you a series of technical elements to remember when branding or rebranding your business.

Henry is wild, rambunctious, and very loud. He says what he thinks, wears t-shirts that are on the red-to-yellow color spectrum and sometimes even has a small tear on the sleeve. His haircut, meant to be pulled back, is usually falling in his face; his laces are half untied, shoes scruffy and pants dusty. He doesn’t have many friends, because people are usually revolted by his course language. They don’t like sharing things with him, since he is wont to reply in loud sympathy something like, “Oh really, so you might be going bankrupt?” and all heads would turn around to see who had just spoken to Henry.

One day, Henry wakes up in total depression. He’s out of a job, has no friends, and life is one big mess. “I need a makeover,” he decides. “I’ll become a new person. I’ll completely remake myself.”

Henry begins to sketch.

He makes a list of all the personality types he can think of; shy, outspoken, confident, mature, sketchy, manipulative, creative, honest, happy-go-lucky, strict, professional, sloppy,

serious, motivated, lazy, decisive, scholarly, adventurous, deceitful, mean, kind. The list goes on.

There are so many to choose from. He begins to eliminate the ones he’s sure he doesn’t want to be. After several hours, he remains with three options; Serious, Creative, or Decisive. He feels that one of these three will give him the new edge he needs to be successful in life.

At the end, he decided to stay with decisive. That will make him feel grounded.

Henry goes out on a shopping spree. He tells the salesman at Macy’s that he’s very decisive and he needs clothing to reflect that impression. The salesman goes around, shows Henry some ties and suits that have a sharp cut. “ I told you, I’m decisive. These clothes won’t work. It doesn’t say who I am,” Henry says loudly.

After a long day of circling the men’s department, Henry is spent. He finds a pair of green trousers, a maroontoned shirt and, and a pair of sneakers, and pays his bill.

The next morning, bright and early, Henry walks out to his first interview with an old

I then asked Sharon about making an offer. When is the right time and at what price should a client start with.

Sharon responded, “If the home feels right, go with your gut.” Another suitable home may not always be available in the neighborhood. She said, “If there is a bidding war, and a client is in a multiple offer situation, the client

doesn’t have the luxury to negotiate up and down.” She said, “Make the best offer that you are comfortable with,” and if it gets accepted quickly, don’t second-guess yourself thinking, “Oh I could have offered less,” or if you don’t get the house, “Oh, I should have offered more.”

In conclusion, between the back to school and the yomim tovim, it is a real busy time. The time frame when you have to move should

determine the urgency of making appointments to view homes now or whether you should just keep in touch with your realtor, view listings online and postpone the actual viewing of homes until after yom tov.
