CROSSWORD PUZZLE

I was so happy to see your new crossword puzzle. I’m always ready for a word challenge, and yours definitely fits the criteria! I wanted to know, though, if you’d be able to print the crossword answer key in a place other than that page. It’s hard to resist the temptation of peeking when it’s right there!

IN SEARCH OF A SOLUTION

Thank you for bringing us together by openly discussing community issues. I appreciate your frank approach. Thank you also for initiating community betterment projects such as the Cleanup Campaign. Besides the practical aspect of the campaign, it also set a standard for Monsey. As in, “In Monsey, we clean up after ourselves,” and, “In Monsey, we appreciate a clean environment and put in effort to make it happen.” Thank you! I would like to request that the Monsey View take on the issue of cleaning help. It’s true that every balabusta can write a book on the subject. But perhaps you can address the issue of offering more money, thereby taking away others’ help. Or agreeing to the lady’s demands to be paid more, thereby picking up the price in the community, and raising the price yet further… There is also the issue that not every

A PLEA TO PEDESTRIANS

Exclusive Winter Hats Now In

Pedestrian traffic is increasing and drivers should proceed with more caution, as a reader recently commented. While this is extremely important, equally imperative is that pedestrians should walk with great care and not assume that the driver has seen you and will stop. When backing out of a space in a busy parking lot, the constant flow of pedestrians makes it nearly impossible to pull out. Even after checking both ways many times, it’s difficult and terrifying to see if it’s actually safe to pull out. When I told this to a sweet, young woman pushing a stroller behind my car, she innocently responded, “You have to look!” Pedestrians, we are trying to look, but we may not see you! Vehicles have blind spots, and drivers are only human. Not everyone has backup cameras. NEVER walk behind a car that is about to pull out or is in the middle of pulling out! It’s not a matter of who is “right”; it’s a matter of safety! You, pedestrians, who are exposed and vulnerable, often with young, precious children, please do your utmost to walk and cross safely and don’t leave your safety only up to the drivers! We don’t want to hurt you, chas v’shalom! Wishing you a safe and healthy kesiva vachasima tovah, and thanking all pedestrians for your help. A Concerned Driver

my call much later, and instructed me to come in immediately. By the time I got to the office, my son was already lethargic, and his entire skin appeared to have a pinkish tinge. Alarmed, we rushed into Westchester hospital with Hatzolah. They immediately hooked him up to IV antibiotics, and tested the infection to see that it had spread to his blood. It was, Baruch Hashem, amazing how he looked revived just three hours later. Two days later, when he was already getting tangled in his IV and jumping out of his skin, he was discharged to complete the treatment at home. After sitting with him in isolation for two days, I naturally came home with three MRSA pimples. Contrary to what was written in your magazine, I easily obtained ichthammol cream from Greenbaum’s Pharmacy. After applying it only a few times, the pimples disappeared. Since then, we use Dial antibacterial bar soap for regular bathing, and Baruch Hashem, nobody has gotten infected since. We are truly grateful for your beautiful weekly. P.S. Just a friendly suggestion: Since I (and everyone I know), clips and saves your recipes, (for each one is truly a winner), it would be so convenient if they could be the center pages. That way we could pull it out as soon as it arrives without tearing apart the entire magazine.

We thank you for such informative, entertaining, and best of all, kosher reading material. It is wonderful every week! I wanted to share our MRSA experience. My three-year-old had a nasty case of chickenpox. About three days after the onset of the disease, I called my pediatrician, because I didn’t like the way the chickenpox looked. Make a lifetime of memories while indulging in the most luxurious heimish hospitality experience. Complement our renowned 5-star cuisine with sides of epic entertainment, including performances by Nachman Bergman, “The Rap ’n Rebbe” (Wednesday

My friend in Eretz Yisroel is rich in bitachon, but financially poor. When her older daughter got married, I was able to get her a wedding gown at a local gemach and send it to her. Now her next daughter is engaged, but this time I was unsuccessful in finding a gown for her. I apologized, but with her trademark bitachon, she answered, “Don’t worry, Hashem will see to it that my daughter will get a gown.” A few weeks ago, she called me with this incredible story. Her courtyard, like many others, is inundated with many advertising flyers. As a rule, when she goes out to collect the papers littering her yard, she throws them in the trash without even glancing at them. For some reason, she happened to read one of the papers she picked up. A seamstress who wanted to get into the wedding gown business advertised that the first ten kallahs who respond to her ad will receive a custom gown for less than the cost of the fabric. She called, and her daughter is able to be one of the recipients of this marvelous offer.

night), and a heart-stopping show by master illusionist David Blatt (Thursday night). Take delicious lunchboxes to go as you explore stunning local attractions, and enjoy babysitting and day camp programs for your party’s younger members.

Welcome home luxury. It all started years ago when Fortunate’s passionate founders underwent training under the tutelage of the most esteemed jewelers. Their goal was to create a highend jewelry discovery experience within their beloved Monsey community, and Fortunate Jewels was born to fill that void. As time went on and they became artists in their own right, the pair began to design their own unique pieces, upgrading and expanding the Fortunate collection. And now they are taking their ‘brilliant service’ promise further.

A new level of exclusivity.

WeighSmarter NEGATIVE EMOTIONS:

By Esty Weiss

Positive and Negative Emotions Last week, I promised to share 250 words that trigger positive emotions. Our emotions are closely related to our weight and overall health. As human beings, when we feel upset or angry, our feelings have a ripple effect on everything around us. We can choose to accept that any feeling or emotion is okay, because our feelings are simply our feelings, and it is shocking how quickly our emotions can dissolve. If you try to fight your feelings and emotions, they will stay with you anyway. As the saying goes, “What you resist, persists.” So, both negative and positive feelings have an impact on your actions. And though reaching for a cookie will make you feel better in the moment, it is preferable to watch and observe your feelings, and accept that they are there and that they will pass. You do not need to react to every feeling you have! If a certain feeling doesn’t serve you well, and if it makes you angry, then simply accept the fact that your body is feeling angry, observe those feelings in your body (maybe you picture your blood boiling, or you visualize your heart racing), realize that your feelings can’t hurt you in any way, and allow your feelings and emotions to come and go, without getting trapped in them or reacting to them by overeating. I will now list a series of negative emotions. Reading them will likely stir some of these feelings in your body, so watch and observe them as though you are watching a play, and see how much quicker they will dissolve than they would if you were fighting your feelings.

There are plenty other negative emotions, but I think that this list is sufficient when it comes to seeing what kinds of emotions are stirred up and how you are going to deal with them.

POSITIVE EMOTIONS: Able, adaptable, acceptable, accomplished, achieved, appreciative, adequate, admirable, approved, assertive, assured, at ease, attentive, authentic, aware, awesome, balanced, beautiful, believing, blessed, bonded, blissful, brave, bright, brilliant, calm, collective, cared for, caring, centered, certain, committed, compassionate, complete, courageous, cheer-

Again, there are plenty of other positive words, but I feel that this will give you a glimpse of how negative words make you feel compared to positive words. Just by reading these words, you can feel how certain emotions are being stirred up in you. Just remember to consider this question: How will you react to a feeling if it doesn’t serve you well?

K i S av o By Malky Aaronson

The peasant was desperate for six-year-old Zalman to learn something already. Zalman could frolic for hours, but a moment near a book was too long. Finally, Zalman’s father found the man for the job. The melamed R’ Yitzchak was a master slapper: He slapped when a boy misbehaved, and he slapped on the back when he learned well. The best part yet was that his young charges loved him for both. Soon, Zalman could tell an Aleph from a Beis, and his mother wept in disbelief. And then, the long-anticipated event arrived: test time. R’ Yitzchak would test Zalman before his father and display all that the child knew. “Aleph!” Zalman exclaimed triumphantly when R’ Yitzchak pointed to the first letter on the page. “Beis! Gimmel!” Soon they advanced to nekudos. “What’s under the Aleph?” “Kametz!” “And under the Hay?” Suddenly Zalman became silent. “Nu, what’s under the Hay?” The boy looked back blankly. “Zalman, you know!” The boy’s father looked on in consternation. When Zalman still remained stubbornly quiet, his face turned red with anger and he grabbed his stick. “Zalman, say the answer now, or...!”

66 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W

Tears sprang to Zalman’s eyes. “But Tatte, you told me not to say! Under the hay is the goat you stole!” “Tachas asher lo avadata es Hashem Elokecha b’simchah u’vetuv leivav — because you didn’t serve Hashem your G-d with joy and gladness of heart.” The frightening curses listed in Parshas Ki Savo all trace back

Our lives are meant to be full of passion and brimming joy — it is our right and privilege. to this. The Rebbe R’ Henoch of Alexander says that it is what “lies under” — tachas — the lack of simcha that is the true cause of all of the dreadful curses in this parsha. The prime accusation is not the lack of joy itself. Lying under that unhappiness is the real “geneivah” — stolen goods. That is where the real problem lies, and for that we are to be punished, rachmana litzlan. What might be our stolen

goat under the hay? Mr. Bernard Davis strutted into the hotel lobby. He handed his shiny luggage to the bellhop without even turning his head, requested his keys, and walked to his room. A few minutes later, an impatient pounding sounded in his room. Mr. Davis flung open the door to find the bellhop huffing and perspiring. “Oh, I’m sorry, mister!” he cried between shallow breaths. “But I’ve never carried such a heavy package! Have you filled this valise with rocks?” Mr. Davis didn’t even look down at the luggage at the boy’s feet. “I’m sorry, but you’ll have to take it right back from where it came. This is not my package. I am a diamond dealer, and diamonds are light. Please bring me my case immediately.” Might we sometimes be carrying the wrong package? Are we the huffing bellhop, carrying burdens that should not be in our hands? If avodas Hashem comes hard, if it is a burden too hard to bear, then we might have taken the wrong package. If we frown in consternation and wonder why there is yet another halacha making our lives even harder, we may have veered just a bit off the track. If we don’t feel the delight in our privilege as His children, if we don’t exult in

the restrictions that make us truly free, something in our mindset must be skewed. Avodas Hashem is light and happy. It is full of delight and pleasure. It is about closeness, never loneliness. It is all satisfaction, not disappointment. “Oz v’chedvah bimkomo” — there is joy and elation wherever Hashem is. If there is not, we may have left Hashem out of the picture.

If we don’t exult in the restrictions that make us truly free, something in our mindset must be skewed. Also in this week’s parshah, in the Ohr Hachaim’s commentary, we read, “If people would know of the sweetness of Torah, they would go mad and chase after it…” These words, a popular song today, never fail to inspire. Our lives are meant to be full of passion and brimming joy — it is our right and privilege. Torah is so sweet; we just have to know and appreciate it. The Arizal, it is said, achieved his great spiritual heights by one virtue alone: his simchah. Simchah is the beginning and end of all good things.

State Turns Down Request by Ramapo Central Parents to Reverse New Transportation Policy Just two weeks into the new school year, private school parents who live in the Ramapo Central School District were disappointed to learn that the state has denied a request to temporarily halt a new busing policy that provides only one pickup and drop-off time per school. The district informed parents in June that they would eliminate staggered arrival and departure times to private schools, saying that the move was designed to save the district money on busing the estimated 772 private school students who live within its boundaries. The move has wrought havoc for parents, as schools have been faced with deciding if it is better to inconvenience parents of older students who have a longer school day by arranging for earlier buses, or those of younger students, whose school day can end several hours before their scheduled drop-off time. Further complicating matters are schools with multiple branches located at different addresses, whose students will now only be bused to one central location, which can be several miles away from their actual school.

Parents opposing the move have argued that the district has presented no proof of any cost savings that will be generated by the move, while the district insists that it is applying its busing standards equally to all schools, regardless of religious denomination. Public schools in the district receive only one pickup and drop-off time per day, but have fewer grades in each school and also receive additional buses for extracurricular activities. A parent group that has been battling the move has vowed to fight on and plans to appeal the decision, which it says is intended to discourage Jewish families from moving into the district. “We are confident that once we have a chance to fully respond to the District’s Appeal presentation and place before the Commissioner the full impact of the unlawful discontinuation of mandated services to our community’s students, she will grant our appeal and reject the false statements they raised in their defense.” (The Journal News)

Chasidic Candidates Win Big in September Primary There were victory parties all around in both Rockland County and Brooklyn as three Chasidic candidates emerged victorious in the September 13th primary. Rockland County Legislator Aron Wieder took home a thunderous win in his quest to become the state’s first Chasidic assemblyman, winning the Democratic primary. Polls stayed open in Monsey and Spring Valley well past the 9 PM deadline to accommodate the many voters who turned out to cast their ballots, and Wieder faces off against Republican incumbent John Brabenec in the November 8th General Election. “We thank each and every voter for coming out to support our candidacy,” said Wieder in a statement. “We will engage every resident in the 98th Assembly District with our positive message and record of accomplishments.” Also in the Monsey area, an effort to unseat Assemblywoman Ellen Jaffee failed. Jaffee, who has been vocal in her allegations that public school students are being shortchanged by the East Ramapo School District in an effort to provide better services to their private school counterparts, made a public statement in the State Assembly questioning

70

/ T HE MONS E Y V IE W

whether private school parents in East Ramapo were even eligible to vote. While her positions and remarks cost Jaffee her support in the Jewish community, she still managed to fend off a challenge from Thomas Gulla, winning more than 60 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary. Mrs. Ruchie Freier won a resounding victory in Brooklyn’s 5th Judicial District, earning a spot as a civil court judge, the first Chasidic woman to be elected as a judge in New York State. Mrs. Freier is a lawyer with offices in both Brooklyn and Kiryas Joel. “With the support of 1000s of voters who rewarded a history of dedicated public service, we are celebrating a decisive victory tonight,” said Mrs. Freier in her official statement released on Tuesday night. “Tonight’s victory is your victory!” In Brooklyn’s 48th Assembly District, which includes parts of Boro Park and Flatbush, Duvy Schwartz ran unopposed for the position of District Leader in Brooklyn’s 48th Assembly District. After his win was confirmed, Schwartz thanked the community for uniting behind him and pledged to work diligently on behalf of area residents.

Before noon, a pipe bomb went off in Seaside Park, NJ on the boardwalk. After authorities placed the area on lockdown, they found another two devices which had not exploded. The devices had been placed in garbage cans along the route on which a Marine Corps charity race was supposed to take place. Because of technicalities, the race started late and no one was injured in that attack. Later in the evening, at about 8:30, a bomb went off in Manhattan’s Chelsea area, injuring 29 people. A bit later, police received a phone call about a suspicious-looking device in the same area. They found a pressure cooker filled with explosives and shrapnel hooked up to a flip phone that had not yet detonated. A police robot removed the device to a safe location where it was defused and studied for evidence. Early on, authorities could not confirm if the incidents were related. Mayor De Blasio, in a press conference, called the bomb intentional, but declined to call it terrorism.

SEPTEMBER 18TH

SEPTEMBER 17TH

Less than a week after the 15th anniversary of 9/11, New Yorkers once again found themselves affected by terror. This time, b’chasdei Hashem, the human damage was minimal, with 29 injuries and no fatalities. The story is still developing, and we don’t have a complete picture yet, but here is what we do know:

Late Sunday evening, five people were arrested on the Belt Parkway near the Verrazano Bridge, but were released after questioning. Soon after, five devices were found in a trash can at the New Jersey Transit station in Elizabeth, NJ. AMTRAK service in the NJ/NY area was suspended. Authorities removed the devices, one of which went off, but didn’t injure anyone.

On Monday morning, authorities released an alert to the public, asking them to be on the lookout for Ahmad Rahami, a naturalized US Citizen originally from Afghanistan, who was seen on surveillance video dropping off the bombs. The public was warned that he was considered armed and dangerous. He had been identified both from surveillance videos, which saw him placing the bombs, as well as from his fingerprints on the undetonated device in NY. Before noon on Monday, Rahami was captured alive in Linden, NJ after opening fire on officers. President Obama finally addressed the nation about the bombings. He praised first responders and offered prayers, but while he still did not call it a terror attack, Mayor de Blasio at last did. The FBI released a statement saying there is no indication that a terror cell is operating in the area. Evidence directly links Rahami to all devices in NYC and NJ. A major incident like this, of course, also drew the attention from both presidential candidates. About an hour after the NYC incident, Trump said in a speech at a rally that there had been a bombing attack in the NY/NJ area that day and tied it into his plans to shut the borders. A little while later, Hillary Clinton spoke to reporters on her plane and called it a bombing as well, but then went on to criticize Trump for jumping to conclusions too fast and without enough information. The unwillingness to acknowledge the incidents as terror by many of the current Democratic government officials, though, has frustrated many. Most US citizens assumed that if explosions take place in major cities, it is most likely a terror attack, and they want their government to acknowledge that and deal with it, rather than to downplay it. Whatever the attackers specific motive may be, trying to kill and maim as many people as possible, is essentially terror. Failing to confront that for political correctness reasons portrays the government as negligent and incompetent.

ELECTION NEWS

By Ruchel Lebovits

THE PATH TO VICTORY: A VIRTUAL TIE As we had previously discussed, presidential elections are won by winning the Electoral College. The modern presidential campaigns will focus solely on winning enough states to carry them to victory. For a period of time this summer, Hillary Clinton had a decisive lead in many of the important swing states, including Virginia, Florida, and Pennsylvania. Over the last couple of weeks, those leads have been shrinking. Many have become nonexistent, and the polls, both national and statewide, have become virtually tied or started favoring Trump. It is interesting to note that all over the country, the Clinton Campaign has a much larger infrastructure set up on the ground then the Trump Campaign does. For example, in Florida, Hillary has 51 campaign headquarters, while Donald Trump has one. And yet, in the latest Reuters/Ipsos Poll, Trump leads Hillary 50%46% in Florida. What Trump has done is use modern media to get free publicity and ar-

range rallies and such, rather than paying large sums of money to keep up offices around the country. And it seems his strategy has worked so far. He has been able to get his message out directly to the people. In addition, the Clinton Foundation debacle and Hillary’s failing health, as well as Trump’s more measured

and tempered tone, have helped him gain support in many battleground states. With seven weeks left to Election Day, and three debates scheduled, this campaign has become about who can mess up less and maintain their current standing in the polls to ultimately scrape out a win.

CHAPTER 9

Sun on

Stone By Chany Rosengarten Recap: Malka’la spends hours in the cold airport, waiting for a ride to Monsey. There’s only one first impression. All else is commentary. Gella Kahn stood behind the glass storm door, taking in her new guest as she struggled through the snow. The woman was thin, her clothing too large. The woman was destitute; you could see it in the grovel under her cheekbones, in the small, strung-together valise she pulled behind her. I don’t think you can make it here, Gella thought, a sinking feeling of pity and disdain making itself known to her bowels without her even being aware she had allowed the feeling in. Malka’la came up the stairs. High winds drove gusts of snow into her face, into the collar of her dress. She slipped on an icy patch on the stairs and grabbed the railings, which were covered in glassy ice. That’s when she looked up at Gella, her round smile clasped between twin moby pearl earrings, a thick chain of gold weighing down her neck. Her clothes were subdued but tastefully fresh, a row of pink and gold snaps run-

82

/ THE MONS E Y V IE W

ning the length of her navy dress. Her house shoes looked newer, sturdier than Malka’la’s pair of vochen shoes. If the house had not given this obvious fact away, she would have known by the coifed, short, wavy wig on Gella’s head, the rings on both hands, the scent that rose from the carpets of the house. This woman has never tasted pain, Malka’la knew, as Gella gave her a careful peck, preserving a careful distance, and the mauve on her lips. She was led down a hallway, and to the right. “This is our guest room. Make yourself at home.” Gella smoothed the duvet once more with a loving pat, opened the closet, pulled the shades up slightly to reveal a white expanse, with a few gray tree limbs frosted over in snow. The closet held fluffy, soft towels, a shoe rack, cubicles. “Supper is ready in the kitchen. I’ll have supper for you every night; we eat at seven. Breakfast and lunch, you can keep in this fridge,” Gella said, opening the door to a mini fridge, stocked with yogurts, cheese, and orange juice, and a

few fruits. “Whenever you are ready, just come to the kitchen.” Gella closed the door behind her. The house breathed its welcome. Malka’la sat on the edge of her bed. It was so inviting, so comfortable. The duvet was fluffy and thick, the small hill of pillows as inviting as a mother’s hug. Her hands were still cold from the way, and she warmed them under her. She had to get up. Supper was ready. She would prefer to skip it, just lie down, just for a little, to rest. Who needed food? But no. She needed food. It had been so long. There was a tall lamp on the night table and the bathroom was off to a side, near the closet. The bathroom was stocked with soaps and shampoos, and Malka’la opened each bottle, to inhale a whiff. The richness of it all. For a moment, she could imagine what the kings of yore must have experienced. The washroom sink had a basket of towels, a sachet of smelly dried twigs, and a negel vasser bowl. If she could only settle in here for the night. But no.

She washed her face, and came out to the kitchen. The supper table was laid with a thick cotton tablecloth, and placemats at each seat. There was a charger, with a huge hunk of pineapple before each seat. “Which brachah is this?” she asked, and was told. She ate the tart fruit, forcing herself to enjoy it until the end. Then she drank down the sharp taste with orange juice from the table.

Oh, how she yearned to have her children here, to give them each one lefaleh, and another, scooping it into their mouths, until they were round and full. Gella watched her, and brought soup to the table. The soup was a chulent, thick with barley, a stew of barley, celery, peppers swimming around… and was that beef? Yes, it was. In the soup. Oh, how she yearned to have her children here, to give them each one lefaleh, and another, scooping it into their mouths, until they were round and full, their bellies satisfied enough to fall easily into a light and hearty sleep. But they were not here, and she was, and she warmed herself, spoon by spoon, and it was delicious, that marrying of flavors, of abundant natural ingredients lending themselves to each other. “Zeyer gishmak,” Malka’la told her

host. “Thank you.” “Oh, you’re ready for the main course?” Her hostess scraped back her chair and went to the oven, from which she procured several Pyrex pans. She placed meatloaf, rice, and a mix of vegetables onto the plate, adding a cupcake foil filled with fruit pie. “Oh!” Malka’la said. “You didn’t have to—” “Didn’t have to what?” “Cook such a seudah for me. You really went out of your way.” Her hunger more than quelled from the soup, she now looked up from the plate and around the table. Mr. Kahn was reading a book of advertisements while her driver, who she now saw was their son, spoke about the news, but only the little ones listened. “This is just supper,” Gella said. “As I said, you’re welcome

a ravaged face, an unknown anomaly, here to take, to receive. A family congregated under their kitchen chandelier of five domed bulbs, and she was not them, and they were being kind to her, and so she was here, but she was intruding. She could either recede into silence, pretending she didn’t exist, or come out of her shell, emerging as part of this scene by contrib-

These people were like noblemen, from the richest of the rich, partaking of this earth fully. to join us every night.” “I’ve never had a meal like this,” Malka’la said appreciatively. Mrs. Kahn looked at her with pity, noting to herself how true it was, how ragged Malka’la appeared. She afforded the poor woman a compassionate smile. Malka’la shifted on her chair, self-conscious and filled with shame. She was an intruder. As much an intruder here as she was an integral part of her own home, her own family, the mainstay, and anchor of her children’s lives, the daughter to her mother, the friend, neighbor, sister, person. There she was human. A person with experiences and wisdoms and perceptions. Here, she was a face,

uting, by finding out what they liked to hear and saying it. She didn’t know which, so she attacked the meat. When she finished swallowing it all down, she felt full, but she still ate vegetables and rice. She was getting a feeling of deep satiation, discomfort even. She shifted her focus around the table, watching Gella bantering lightly about this and that, prompting her boys to share how their day was. She tasted the pie. It was a mix of fruits and soft, sugary streusel. The heavenly fusion of a variety of goodness. She couldn’t eat anymore, so full was she. Eat while you can, she forced herself. Mrs. Kahn stood up from the

table. She cut up brown cake with frosting. These people were like noblemen, from the richest of the rich, partaking of this earth fully. But she couldn’t anymore. The food was pressing on her. She remembered the richest, fullest meal she had ever had, way back when she first got married, at the Goldrebs’. Even then, the meal had not been this. “Here,” Gella passed her a plate with cake. “I can’t. I’m full,” Malka’la said. If only she could wrap it up and take it home to her children. “And I should go. I hear that most people are available to meshulachim mainly at night. That’s when everyone is home, the business people, everyone. I’ll go collect now.” “Now?” Gella Kahn said. “Don’t you want to rest from your trip?” Malka’la remembered the feel of the duvet, and the soft bed under her weary, exhausted bones. “I have to do it. I’ve left my children behind. Every day counts.” Mr. Kahn picked his head up from his reading. “You’re not going outside in this weather.” To be continued... Deep within the bowels of Cerro Rico — the Rich Mountain located in Potosi, Bolivia — thousands of miners snake their way ever further into the jagged tunnels of rock. They’ve come in the pursuit of silver, for which this mountain is known. Many of them are mere teens who hope to make a living with the pittance they’ll claim after a day of strenuous labor. For them, the choice to mine is easy: Mining means money, and money means life — as long as the mine doesn’t claim their lives before the day is done. Cheeks packed with coca leaves to stave off hunger and fatigue, the men battle heat, dust, and noxious gases, as well as the very possible risk of cave-ins that have become rather frequent in the over-mined mountain. For over 470 years, Cerro Rico has shared the treasures of its bosom with man, honoring them with mounds of gleaming silver. But now, the mountain is like an ant colony, with hundreds of kilometers of crisscrossing tunnels that could collapse at any moment. For this reason, the miners have dubbed Cerro Rico, “The

mountain that eats men.” It is but one of the many man-eating mines around the world.

Life in the Mines Though foreign countries like Bolivia, Mexico, and Peru boast silver-rich mines, the United States also has its own worthy reserves. From Texas to Alaska, and from California to Pennsylvania, silver mines dot the breadth and width of the American landscape. A far cry from the inhumane conditions at Cerro Rico, American silver mines place safety as an industry priority. Yet, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, mining, without fail, settles into the yearly top ten count of most dangerous professions. Even in American mines where the most advanced safety precautions are taken, danger is everywhere.

people voluntarily choose to take the risks inside American mines on a A typical day of silver hunting begins with each miner “diggering up” in protective overalls, steel-toed boots, a hard hat with an electrical headlamp, eye protection, gloves, and even hearing protection. The machinery that miners work with are no children’s toys, emitting high decibels of noise for continuous hours. It’s not uncommon for miners to lose their hearing at a young age. But it’s the lungs that are most often affected, damaged by the fine mineral dust particles that enter miners’ lungs and build up, creating an occupational disease called Pneumoconiosis. The machine fumes and exposure to radon also do nothing to mitigate the concerns over miners’ respiratory health. Despite the long-term bodily damage that may occur from working as a miner, over 350,000

yearly basis. At the Lucky Friday mine in Mullan, Idaho, miners climb aboard a 6x6 cage for the descent into the blackened heart of Lucky Friday. At the rate of 1,500 feet per minute, they travel more than a mile under the earth to begin their daily dig. Currently, the mine resides roughly 6,000 feet underground, with plans to dig even further. At this depth, oxygen is scarce, and air is pumped in from thousands of feet above. The miner’s worst nightmare is losing that precious commodity, and each miner is outfitted with an emergency device that is able to convert dangerous carbon monoxide into an hour’s worth of breathable oxygen, should the need arise. There’s also a stench box kept in the mine, that releases a malodorous smell to alert the miners when a fire breaks out underground. Fire eats oxygen, and thus is even more threatening than the physical flames. When a miner smells the warning from the stench box, he knows it’s time to run for

higher ground. Round-the-clock air conditioners blast cooling air into the working space, though the temperature is never felt as cold. Down here, the thermostat naturally reads 120°, but the air conditioning brings it down to a manageable 85°. Huge diesel trucks drive within the mines — having been transported and assembled piece by piece — and workers drill designated areas with gigantic tools. Every now and again, explosions rumble the earth as miners break into new territory. Here, they’ll clink and chink away at the shards of broken rock, sure to find another day’s worth of silver. These hewn rocks, called ore, are full of fine minerals and metals like gold, zinc, copper, and silver, which will be extracted and refined back up on the upper levels of earth.

Nowadays, chemical leaching is the more common method of silver extraction, though there are other methods that involve the use of electricity. By combining specific chemicals, metallurgists are able to easily extract silver from where it is embedded within the ore. No matter which method a company chooses to refine their silver through, each process involves careful calculations, time, multiple steps, and a certain element of danger.

Crafting Silver Products Refining the Silver Ore Silver has historically been extracted from ore through pyrometallurgy (extracting metal through heat) in processes called smelting and roasting. For each of these processes, ore is ground into tiny particles and exposed to heat and reducing agents which decompose the undesired elements of the ore. Though different, both processes involve extremely high temperatures, and extremely bad smells. Due to the strong pollutants released through these processes, very few metallurgists in the United States use these methods today.

Before a silversmith can begin crafting his products, he’ll have to purchase the appropriate amount of refined silver. Silver with a purity of near 99.9% is commonly sold in rectangular ingots (bars) or as minted coins, though buyers of super-pure silver are typically only investors. One of the softest of precious metals, silver at near-pure levels is not conducive for producing functional objects. For high-quality jewelry and judaica, the alloy known as sterling silver is most commonly used by silversmiths. With silver making up 92.5% of the metal mixture, sterling is a combination of beauty and functionality. To create the exquisite candlesticks and kiddush

Delicate Designs Not all silver is made through molds, however. The delicate, lace-like designs of filigree art have been popular throughout the ages, especially among those from Yemen. Skilled craftsmen manipulate thin silver wires, shaping them into uniform patterns by hand, and soldering the tiny wires together through fire. These pieces can then be attached to jewelry, or added as designs to molded-form pieces. Filigree artists spend many years perfecting their skill, because, as they say, “It takes an hour to learn, and a lifetime to master.”

More Precious Than Gold and Silver cups prized in the Jewish world, silversmiths will purchase sheets of 925 silver (sterling) or melt down previous silver creations. With the melting point of silver being 1,753°, smithing is a potentially hazardous and complicated profession with little margin of error. Most silver pieces are crafted from solid parts, created from molten silver that is poured into shaping molds. This technique involves heating the silver in a specialized heat-resistant container called a “foundry crucible” until the melting point. The very hot crucible is then held with tongs, and the liquid silver carefully guided in a steady, fluid fashion into the molds. There, the silver will slightly cool and harden, though one final step must be taken to create a beautiful, sturdy product. While still retaining some heat, the newly created item is submerged in water, in a rapid-cooling method called “quenching.” Quenching the silver results in a stronger product than would naturally occur were the silver to cool at slower pace.

Mankind has long run after precious metals, willing to risk life and limb to procure the treasure of silver and its kin. Consider the miners at Cerro Rico, crawling through fragile tunnels with dynamite in hand, or the workers at Lucky Friday, drilling 6,000 feet away from the light of day. What will stop a man from gathering in his beloved metal? What can discourage the human from obtaining one of the most desirable objects on Earth? Perhaps, this Rosh Hashana, when we set the Yom Tov table with magnificent silverware, we will be reminded of the lengths that man will go to gather, extract, and create beauty from hardened rock. And then, we will remember that, “Tov li Toras picha, m’alfei zahav v’chesef.” As this new year comes upon us, let us ask: How far are we willing to go to gather, extract, and create true beauty in our lives from man’s most precious resource, the Torah?

MAY IT BE A YEAR OF GROWTH, BEAUTY, AND BLESSING FOR KLAL YISROEL.

HANDLE WITH CARE By Idy Swimer

Yom Tov is approaching, and if our silver collection is going to make an appearance and grace our tables, it will to need to be cleaned and polished. As with every good thing, a measure of maintenance is required. Silver, when properly protected, will yield generations of enjoyment. Tarnish is caused by silver coming into contact with sulfur compounds, mainly hydrogen sulfide in the air. Its formation is accelerated in a humid environment. Oily slats from fingers can also cause corrosion patterns that may have to be professionally removed. Tarnish is easily removed when first noticed (usually as a yellowish tint), and will become increasingly difficult to deal with as it turns to light brown and eventually black.

material. Rub polish into all your silverware. This can be done with a cotton ball, pad, or special cloth. 2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Then, immerse each piece into the boiling water. Use a strainer for smaller items and kitchen tongs for larger items. Wipe the silver items down a bit, and immerse for a second round. Buffing afterwards is super easy. 3. Change the water after every few pieces.

MAINTENANCE Gently wash and dry your silver immediately after each use. While washing, do not allow silver to come in contact with a metal sink, as that can cause scratching. (Use a plastic dishpan or line the sink with a towel.)

SILVERWARE CARE When it comes to silver, the most effective approach would still be commercial silver polish. When used properly, commercial grade silver polish provides long-term protection and sheen. Use caution and keep the room where you are working well ventilated when working with commercial silver polish. This process ensures that your silver gets the proper cleaning, shining, and buffing that is needed. 1. Line your workstation with a towel or other

Silver pieces that might contain oil or wax such, as candlesticks and menorahs, should be done separately. This ensures that any remaining oil or wax does not dirty the other silverware. 4. Once your pieces are dried, spray Windex

ful with minimal effort. But once it is time to pack away, we want to clean it properly. What is the fix? 5. Soak silverware/flatware in a sink full of boiling water and ½ cup of dishwashing soap such as Dawn or Palmolive. Let sit for 15 minutes. 6. Drain the water, but don’t rinse the silverware. Instead, use the sponge of the silver polish and wash the silver wares until they sparkle. 7. Rinse well with very warm water, and dry with a lint-free cloth. When storing your flatware, rotate the pieces so they will wear uniformly.

COMMON SILVER CARE MISTAKES NOT TO MAKE: WRAPPING IT IN PLASTIC: No, no, no. Never wrap it in saran wrap or a plastic bag. Always have something between the two. Something about the plastic can permanently discolor the silver. Silver is best stored in treated flannel bags which draw away the sulfur from the silver it’s protecting. Alternatively, you can wrap your silver in acid-free tissue or paper then placed in a Ziploc bag. Keep the silver in a dry, well-ventilated, safe area and use silica gel to help absorb dampness. Cutlery should be wrapped individually and placed side by side, rather than piled up. PUTTING THE PIECE IN THE OVEN: Stubborn dirt or grime will not loosen up in the oven. Instead, the silver may soften, and you may be left with a disfigured piece. LOOKING FOR A QUICK FIX: “Don’t rush.” Most people try household remedies for polishing silver, but products that work quickly only do so since they’re too abrasive. While cleaning and polishing in separate processes may take longer, you won’t damage the silver.

HOW TO GIVE YOUR SILVER A DEEP CLEANING: Appropriate for post party, Shabbos, or Yom Tov cleanup We like to use our silver pieces and flatware when preparing for an occasion, Shabbos, or Yom Tov. The sparkle and shine makes the table beauti-

CLEANING SILVER IN THE DISHWASHER: The heat and harsh detergents of the dishwasher will eventually whiten the silver, causing it to require professional refinishing. In addition, dishwashers can cause blades to explode out of hollowhandled knives. SALT AND SILVER ARE NOT A MATCH: Salt is extremely corrosive to silver; always empty vessels and wash them when not used on a regular basis.

SCRAPS OF SILVER BITS

Silver is one of the most major precious metals, second in acclaim only to gold. Throughout history, there were times when silver held more value than gold. • Although the cost and value has varied enormously over the years, silver has always had a great investment value. • Mexico is the world’s leading silver producer, though silver mines can be found in many countries throughout the world. • The term sterling silver is given to the combination of metal that is at least 92.5% (.925) silver by weight. The other 7.5% is comprised of other metals, usually copper, to strengthen it. That is why the marking on a silver piece will be 925. • About 30% of silver consumption in the U.S. goes toward photography production, which requires silver nitrate. • Silver has the highest electrical conductivity of any of the metals. On a scale of 0 to 100, silver ranks 100 in terms of electrical conductivity, and copper, which most wires are made of, ranks 97. • Silver is the best thermal conductor of any metal. The lines you see in the rear window of a car consist of silver, used to defrost ice in the winter.

116

/ T HE MO NS E Y V IE W

SILVER’S MEDICINAL PROPERTIES • Silver possesses antibacterial properties and has been used for medicinal purposes, prior to the advent of antibiotics. • During the Middle Ages, the antibacterial properties of silver were also used to disinfect water supplies and protect food supplies during long-term storage. • Around this same time period, the European people also developed the technique of using silver for the treatment of burn and wound victims, using the silver as a dressing for their injuries. • While the saying that people who were “Born with a silver spoon in their mouth,” tends to refer to those who were lucky enough to be born into wealthy families, it is believed the saying stemmed more from a health rather than a wealth perspective, because children fed with silver spoons and other silver utensils tended to be healthier. • In fact, silver is considered by some to contain such healing properties that they create a liquid derived from the metal called “collodial silver” and drink it to fight infection. Too much, however, can turn the skin blue!

The only word in the English language that rhymes with silver is the word “chilver,” an Old English noun meaning an ewe lamb.

GO FOR THE… SILVER! • All United States dimes, quarters, half-dollars, and dollar coins minted prior to 1965 contained 90% silver. So keep your eyes peeled when you get change at the market, because every now and then you can still find a real silver coin. • Kennedy’s half-dollars, minted in the U.S. between 1965 and 1969, contained 40% silver. • The word for “silver” and “money” are the same in at least 14 languages.

WHAT SETS SILVER APART? DUCTILITY Silver’s formability make it highly prized among artisans looking to create ornate artwork. In fact, silver can be stretched into a wire thinner than a human hair. •

LUSTER

Silver can achieve the most brilliant polish of any metal. •

RESILIENCE

Silver is extremely corrosionresistant and can last a long time. •

REFLECTION

Silver is the most reflective element, which makes it useful in mirrors, telescopes, and microscopes. Polished silver reflects 95% of the visible light spectrum.

The 25th anniversary is called the Silver Anniversary.

Clip, clop, clip, clop… If you happened to be walking down Maple Avenue ahead of my young entourage on your way to shul Rosh Hashanah morning a couple years ago, you might have wondered why it sounded as if a miniature horse was following you. And if you happened to look behind you to investigate said sound, you would then have wondered why the pack-leader’s face (mine) was bathed in crimson. I’m sure your curiosity didn’t last long, however, as you let your gaze sweep over the decently dressed children, one little girl’s beaming face, and then down to her shoes. At that moment your question of, “What’s clopping along behind me?” probably then swiftly transformed into the rather embarrassing (for me)

I mean, which normal person puts their kid in heels?! Obviously, ME. question of, “Why in the world did that normal-looking mother buy high heels for her five-yearold?” To add to my mortification, there was no way to run after you and explain the story behind the child’s rather comical choice of footwear, because you know, how normal would that look? Accosting random people and explaining how I find my-

120

/ THE MONS E Y V IE W

self in odd situations seems even odder than the situations to begin with. So, with the heldin-check burning desire to justify my actions, I headed to shul where everyone would see my clip-clopping preschooler and gawk at my crimson face. Somehow, I survived the experience. But now that I’m hiding behind the safety of the keyboard, (and you’re effectively held captive by the printed word), I can finally tell you the true story of Why the Five-Year-Old Had Heels.

THE SHORT VERSION I sent my husband shopping. (Doesn’t that explain everything?)

THE LONG VERSION I’m a procrastinator. Big time. Whatever I don’t do right away just falls on the wayside. That goes for shopping too. For days, I’d been saying that I needed to get my daughter new Shabbos/Yom Tov shoes, but somehow just never found the time to head out to the store. Finally, only hours to the z’man, it dawned on me that scrunching her toes into the shoes she’d outgrown weeks prior would be incredibly cruel, and if I didn’t act fast she’d have to wear vochen shoes or Crocs to shul for shofar blozen. With mounting anxiety, I called my husband and told him that’d I’d “forgotten” (read: procrastinated) about the shoes. He’d have to head out and buy

her something to wear, and he’d have to do it alone since I couldn’t possibly take a break in the middle of Yom Tov prep. “Black,” I said, trying to keep it as simple as possible. “Just plain black. Nothing fancy. Quick in and out; the easiest shopping trip ever!” Boy was I thankful he was heading out for me. After all, I couldn’t bring the kid to shul in Crocs! How embarrassing would that be? A short while later my phone rang. “Is a little heel okay?” My husband queried. Picturing a wide, fat, (short!) elevation on the bottom of a Mary-Jane-ish type of plain black shoes, I asked him if my daughter liked it. “She loves it!” was his reply. “So get it,” I said, never imaging that Payless made stilettos for people that were only recently potty-trained. I mean, which normal person puts their kid in heels?! Obviously, ME. The slam of the minivan door alerted me to the arrival of a beaming five-year-old who quickly ran indoors, schlepped a shoe-box from the confines of its plastic bag, and proceeded to regale me with her “mama shich.” At first, I was stunned into silence. And then I erupted into peals of laughter combined with hysterical shrieking, “This is what you bought? I said plain black! Nothing, no frills! No heels! They have to go back, right now! Do whatever you have to do, but these have got to go!” My husband stared at me like I were wild woman. “You said heels were fine.” He was right. I had. But.

I should have known that even a simple shopping trip could end up in comedy; after all, this is the same man who was sent to buy a stretchy for my daughter and returned home with a blue and red zip-up with a giant fire-truck emblazoned on the front. You’d think I’d learned already that our tastes are, umm, slightly different. Guess not. Gulping air to calm myself (and stop the simultaneous tears of laughter), I watched my little girl teetering around the room, her face a thousand-watt beacon of light, and knew that just as I couldn’t force my husband to actually return to the store, I

also couldn’t give up something that meant so much to my little one. I’d have to give up something that meant so much to me: freedom from embarrassment. And so, dear Maple Avenue’rs, if you happened to have noticed a five-year-old in heels on the way to shul, know that those heels, though comical, were a symbol of shalom in our family. From a husband who ran to do a wife’s bidding, to a wife that swallowed her pride in order not to overwork her husband, and parents that allowed their child to revel in the feeling of her “mama shich,” — those shoes were worth the humiliating cost of stares and

turned heads on Rosh Hashanah, even if it came along with a crimson face. And you know what? My five-year-old quickly learned that growing up too quickly may not be all it’s cracked up to be. “My feet hurt,” she complained all the way home, realizing for the first time that the grass is not always greener on the other side… As for the heels, you can come visit them in the dress-up box, somewhere near the bumble bee and fishermen getups from previous Purims. Maybe we’ll use them again one year, but definitely not for Rosh Hashanah!

CHAPTER THREE

I wasn’t disappointed when work relations grew rough between my boss and me. He wanted more dedication to the job and overtime on random days, and I wanted to be on time for my husband’s homecoming every day. There were also yichud complications with the office setup, but my boss neglected to take care of it, so I left the front door open, which infuriated him. I didn’t care if he fired me; in fact, I’d have been delighted. I was hoping to be a mother soon, so I’d be leaving anyway for a while. I didn’t get fired, but I did train in another secretary before I left, and there was an unspoken understanding that my time at the office was over. I never looked back. On my first day off, before my baby was born, I got up in the morning and stretched lazily. Today I can do anything I like! The freedom was exhilarating. After davening and a long breakfast, I sat at the dining room table with the Chovos Halevavos and read a few chapters with the transla-

I can’t say bonding with my baby was all bliss — this was my first, and there was so much to adjust to — but I relished the long, unfettered days. I called myself a home-based English teachers’ assistant, and it sounded fair enough. And then, these first freelance opportunities slowly prodded me to realize my very secret dream: writing. Did I mention my mother-inlaw? Well, make that father-in-

She is a hardworking, no-nonsense woman who got up for work at 6 a.m. every morning and prepared lessons and marked papers at nights, for over thirty years. In a way, I saw myself in her. This was my dream image of self from my “when I grow up” days. I’m eternally grateful that my mother-in-law met me as a non-teacher, and that she was never aware that in the non-too-distant past, I planned to do exactly what she did. So luckily, I never had to defend my position. But my father-in-law wasn’t so quick to forgive, even if he, too, didn’t know that I myself had planned on teaching. At nearly every Shabbos table, the teaching discussion came up. “Teaching is the ideal job for a mother. You’re on vacation together with the children; it’s so convenient.” I’d swallow hard and smile. Yes, that was very true. But how could I explain that being independent was vacation every day? Should I suffer for ten months to earn two months of vacation, or do what I like and feel like I’m on vacation the whole year? And then the ultimate argument: “And what about retirement?” Yes, I know old age was closer than it seemed and that one always had to prepare for the future, but I was so new on the work scene and still testing the waters that I thought it was fair to wait a little. Did I have to force myself into a steady job I hate in the name of responsibility? Somehow, that didn’t sound very responsible to me. Thankfully, my father-in-law is not a difficult person, and the jibes became more of a family joke than criticism. But the need for self-defense was still there, and it was painful. It’s hard when you can’t pursue your dreams without looking over your shoulder. I started carving out some kind of career, but the going was tough. I’d sit down and force myself to write, and of course, my mind just clogged up. I got rejection letters from publications by the dozen, each another kick in the gut. So aside from self-defender, now I had to be my own cheerleader, too. I plugged away, shaping, honing, refining, and sending out feelers all over for freelance work. I made some pennies doing typing, another bit through editing children’s stories, and the most through... saving. No, I didn’t strike it rich. But dreams are not about richness of the pocket, but of the soul.

The number in each square is equal to the sum of the numbers in the circle on either side. Fill in the missing numbers.

GO FOR THE GOLD

Imagine there are 3 coins on the table: gold, silver, and copper. If you make a truthful statement, you will get one coin. If you make a false statement, you will get nothing. What sentence can guarantee you getting the gold coin?

Disadvantage:

__________ __________

ANSWERS:

__________

GO FOR THE GOLD

WITH

“You will give me neither the copper nor the silver coin.” If it is true, then I have to get the gold coin. If it is a lie, then the negation must be true, so “You give me either copper or silver coin,” which would break the given conditions that you get no coin when lying. So the first sentence must be true.

When You Need a CoSigner for Your Loan by Ann Zeilingold One of the key components of mortgage qualification is having enough income to support the mortgage payment. This is, I feel, is one of the biggest challenges we are facing in our community and probably the single reason, more than any other factor, why a young family remains renting instead of buying a home. Credit can be improved, assets can be saved, gifts inherited.. But a lack of income or work history cannot be easily remedied. If someone is looking to buy a home and does not qualify because their income is too low, a non-occupying co-borrower or a co-signer is a great solution, but it does come with serious responsibilities for the co-borrower and serious concerns for the home purchaser. The most common question asked is, “What are the consequences of co-signing for someone else’s mortgage?” The first thing to address is the term “co-signer” vs. “co-borrower.” When you sign for someone else, you are accepting equal responsibility to repay the loan. It is not like the traditional co-signer relationship, where if the loan were to default, then you have to step up to the plate and pay it back; here, you are equally responsible. That means that the loan is on your credit report, and if it is late, then you will be reported as late. In the mortgage world, the major difference between a co-signer vs a non-occupying co-borrower is that the co-signer is not on the deed and title, thereby has no ownership in the home and the non-occupying co-borrower would be on the title and the deed and share ownership of the home. Many families are able to buy a home only because they have a co-signer. There is no simple recipe that I can provide to you with

Credit can be improved, assets can be saved, gifts inherited.. But a lack of income or work history cannot be easily remedied.

guidelines on who will be a good co-signer. If you are going to need a co-signer, look for one before you begin to look for a home, and have your mortgage professional pre-approve him to see if he will be able to help you in this endeavor. Usually, when purchasing a home with a co-signer, it is all good for the occupying borrower. This is a way for them to purchase a home without making enough income to support the loan. Many families today are actually getting help from parents and therefore can afford the home, but parental support is not income, even if it is received regularly and consistently. Many questions arise from the co-signer. What exactly is his responsibility? Does the co-signer have to come to the closing? Does the co-signer have to be an American citizen? For how long is he responsible? The answers are that the co-signer is equally responsible for the mortgage as the primary borrower — they both sign the note, the “I owe you.” The co-signer normally needs to come to the closing, un-

less there is a power of attorney in place, and the co-signer needs to file a US tax return and must have a social security number. So, it seems it’s a great solution for the borrower, but sometimes, things can go wrong. Recently, I closed a loan for a client, where the co-signer changed his mind after a commitment was issued and the closing was scheduled. The primary client had sold his home in another state and had accepted jobs locally. They had a $50,000 down payment on the line, and they were in a very bad position. Eventually, the cosigner agreed to proceed, but it couldn’t have been a comfortable situation. In conclusion, I am sure that many readers will be purchasing homes, possibly with co-

signers. When purchasing a home with a co-signer, it is a good idea to make sure the co-signer is clear on his responsibilities. He needs to be aware of the house price and monthly payments. This all needs to be worked out before one finds a home. This information should be conveyed by your mortgage professional, and the co-signer should be comfortable with what he is doing so that the dream of purchasing a home doesn’t spiral into a nightmare.
