I found out that the National Park Service is turning 100 years old in 2016, and as a celebration, will make certain days in every national park free. See below for the schedule: • August 25 through 28: National Park Service Birthday • September 24: National Public Lands Day • November 11: Veterans Day The fee waiver includes entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees. Other fees such as reservation, camping, tours, concession and fees collected by third parties are not included unless stated otherwise. Fee-free days make parks accessible to more people. DISAPPOINTED IN NEW CITY

My daughter and I visited High Tor Mountain Park, and there was a sign there stating that they are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, and I’d like to make you aware of that. In addition, The Dutch Gardens: maybe it was a garden once, but presently it is not well maintained. It’s quite rundown, and does not have a picnic area. It’s not really too much of an attraction; maybe just right for a shidduch date.

WORRIED ABOUT ALTERNATIVE HEALTH

Alternative healing sounds great: It appears to be “natural,” with no side-effects, no doctors’ visits, and it is usually cheaper. However, many alternative healing practices, such as EFT, Health Kinesiology, Chi-Gong Healing, Energy Healing, Acupressure, One Brain, and Brain Gym are not scientifically based. Rather, they are based on New Age healing systems, and specifically, Chinese “medicine” is an ancient religious belief system full of kefirah and avodah zarah. “Doctors don’t know everything!” True, but what they do know, is based on scientific methods. People may say they have been “healed” through

alternative medicine. But anecdotal proof is not the basis for proving anything. How many people weren’t cured by alternative treatments? How many people were unfortunately hurt by pursuing alternative treatments while ignoring “conventional medicine”? Two of my cousins died because they either relied entirely on an alternative health practitioner, or delayed effective treatment while wasting time with nonsensical treatments. Ask yourself: Why doesn’t Hatzoloh staff alternative healer EMT’s? Answer: Alternative healing doesn’t work consistently on any real medical problems. And if it works at all, it may be kishuf, because it not scientific. Alternative medicine is not natural at all; it is purely supernatural. SEEKING CLARIFICATION

In Issue 56, there was an article titled The History of Mama Lashon. The title got me very much excited, as I always wanted to know exactly how, when, where, and by whom Yiddish was instituted. Much to my disappointment, I found that the article did not provide as much

For example, the author writes that six of the Lashon Hakodesh letters are not used in the writing of Yiddish (words). I only know of three/four, the ‫ ח‬,‫ ּכ‬and ‫ת‬/‫ּת‬. A modern-day Yiddishist P.S. A while back someone asked in your Hilchos Shabbos section if sweeping ants and tying them in the garbage bag would be an issur of tzeida. The reply was in accordance with the issue of tzeida. However, I found it troublesome that the issue of tying the garbage bag was disregarded. I think that there might be a problem of making a “kesher.” The Monsey View responds: The fifth and sixth Lashon Hakodesh letters not used in Yiddish are ‫ ב‬and ‫שּ‬ ׂ .

EDITOR’S BULLETIN The attribution on last week’s article Rockland’s Lyme Disease Epidemic was mistakenly omitted. MC Millman authored the piece. The following information was inadvertently omitted in last week’s Food and Family frozen treats section by Leah Stern. I have verified by our local dayan that the bracha for the Fruit Pops (the chunks of fruit macerated in white grape juice) is Borei Pri Haetz and Borei Nefashos.

My husband and I went to look at a house. After seeing many houses, I had given up; however, our broker said I would love a particular house and he was right. As we were talking outside the house, a man came over to us and told us that if we liked the neighborhood but not the house we saw, there was another neighbor on the block that was thinking of selling his house. He took us over to the house, but no one was home. In the meantime we put in an offer on the other house. There was someone who had seen it before us, but did not put in an offer until after us. Although we found out later that our offer was the same, the other person’s offer got accepted. The broker felt bad for us. He offered to go back to that other person that was thinking of selling his house, even though he would not be doing it through a broker. Our broker followed up for us and we went to see it. It had everything the previous house had that I had liked. However, this house also had things that the other house didn’t have that my husband liked. We put in an offer which was accepted.

Now that we’re in garbage-control mode, there is another aspect I’d like to address. On the days of garbage collections, many people wheel their cans onto the sidewalks to make sure that their garbage is picked up. It is not safe to have the cans on the sidewalks, blocking the paths of pedestrians and riders. In fact, my son was injured when he crashed into a garbage can while he was riding his bike. Please keep your cans two feet in. They will be collected like that too, and it will prevent the repulsive smell from coming out on the streets, and the carriages, bikes, and pedestrians will be able to pass by.

Is Sugar an Addiction? I definitely think that pure white sugar is addictive. Here’s why: 1. The fact that people have such a difficult time “getting off” sugar is a clear indication of how addictive it can be. 2. Manufacturers will put sugar in their products in every way possible, because they know how addictive it is, and people will want more of it. 3. Some of the painful withdrawal symptoms that people experience when they go off sugar are similar to the withdrawal symptoms of certain opiates (drugs). Another interesting thing is seen in people who go off sugar and white flour, and then treat themselves to something sweet later on: The “sugar high” will take their body on a rollercoaster ride, and in no time they will be back at square one, having to fight their sugar addiction all over again. I want to clarify that when I talk about sugar, I include everything made with fructose, dextrose, glucose, corn syrup, high-fructose corn syrup, refined honey, agave syrup, and even organic sugar. The point is that any food item that quickly turns into sugar will be addictive. This article will appeal to you if you would like to experience life without sugar. I will list some of the benefits of going off sugar, most of which take approximately two to four weeks to go into effect. What about moderation in everything? Well, moderation isn’t an option if you want to overcome your addiction. If you’re addicted to sugar, you should stop consuming it altogether, or you’ll risk binging and overeating. Moderation is an excellent

way to go for people that have worked on inner strength and have the right tools and skills to deal with “eating in moderation,” which is very much my style. The problem I find is that most people have no clue what moderation even means. It’s a nice and positive word, and it seems like the answer to everything, but is it really? Do you know how to eat sweets in moderation? Do you know how to define what moderation means for you? These are important questions, because it’s easy to convince yourself that you’re consuming sugar in moderation when that is simply not the case. On a near-daily basis, I meet with clients who complain that they don’t know why they are struggling with their weight. If they only eat unhealthy food in moderation, why would they have a weight problem? However, when I go through exactly what they eat, I realize pretty quickly that what they consider moderation is in fact total and complete excess (for their bodies, at least). So, for those of you who are ready to give up sugar, try eliminating it from your diet for just a few weeks and see how you feel. Then, once you’re ready, you can adopt it as a lifestyle. The truth, however, is that addiction is just something that you repeat again and again because the “reward center” of your brain experiences pleasure and asks for more of whatever it is you are addicted to. That’s why when you try to withdraw from something, it can be pretty difficult, although it certainly possible. Some people like to go cold turkey on sugar, quitting anything and everything made with sugar and white flour. People who struggle with their weight will even need to limit their fruit, grain, and starch intake, and slowly add grains made from whole wheat flour, spelt, and kamut back into their diet to determine how much of the stuff their body can handle. Michael* is a successful businessman who recently began learning Torah and has been steadily growing in his level of observance. One summer, he learned about the significance of Tisha B’Av and the importance of not traveling, swimming, or placing yourself in any kind of danger on that day. He read the list of tragedies that befell the Jewish people on Tisha B’Av: the destruction of the first and second Bais Hamikdash, the expulsion of the Jews from England in 1290 and from Spain in 1492, and the start of World War I in 1914, which ultimately led to World War II and the mass destruction of European Jewry. Michael found the list compelling — so many tragedies on one day could be no coincidence — but he excused himself. He had a very important business meeting coming up on Tisha B’Av that could not be pushed off. He decided to fly there and back that day, but he felt it would be okay because it was a very short flight. Well, things that should not have gone wrong according to normal and reasonable expectation did go wrong — it was beyond natural. As Michael pulled out of his driveway to begin the drive to the airport, the front of the car scraped along the curb for no apparent reason, causing damage to the body of the car — something which never occurred before nor

since. As Michael pulled into the airport parking lot, the front end of his car began to drag along the ground, forcing him to stop multiple times to try and reattach it. This resulted in Michael almost missing his flight; he ran to his gate and boarded the plane just as the gate was closing. Michael arrived safely at his destination and proceeded

As he drove the rental car out of the parking lot, a crack suddenly appeared from nowhere across his windshield. Michael arrived at the meeting location and opened his carry-on to change from his non-leather crocs to his leather business shoes, only to discover that he had forgotten his shoes. He was forced to attend a high-power business meeting in his Tisha

B’Av crocs. The weather then became very nasty, and Michael’s return flight was delayed. Michael’s drive home from the airport was harrowing. The nasty weather continued, and he found himself on the highway in a torrential downpour. Mysteriously, the two wipers became jammed together, and he could not see. He pulled over and discovered that the left wiper was broken. He moved it off the car so that the right wiper could operate. In order to see as he drove home, Michael had to lean to the right to look through the clear part of the window. Michael then became lost on his drive home — his GPS had been misplaced somewhere along the way. Thankfully, he finally arrived home, safe and sound. In this week’s Parsha, Bilam set out on his donkey to go curse the Bnei Yisroel. Three times along the way, his donkey saw the malach of Hashem blocking its path and refused to proceed, and each time, Bilam struck the donkey. After the third incident, the donkey spoke to Bilam. Finally, Hashem opened Bilam’s eyes to see the malach. The malach asked Bilam why he struck the donkey three times, and Bilam replied, “Chatasi ki lo yadati ki atah nitzav likrasi baderech — I have sinned because I did not know that you were standing on the road before me.” (Bamidbar 22:32)

R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlita, says a vort in the name of the Sefer Chasidim, the Shlah Hakodesh, the Kedushas Levi, and the Rebbe Bunim of Peshischa, zy”a. If Bilam did not know the malach was there, then how did he sin? Did he not have the right to strike his donkey if it refused to proceed for no good reason? The answer is in Bilam’s words: “Chatasi ki lo yadati — I sinned because I did not know…” Bilam’s sin was in not knowing — he should have known. Bilam’s donkey behaved in ways it had never behaved before, from disobeying him at all, let alone three times, to opening its mouth to actually speak to him. The Sefer Chasidim in Siman 153 concludes that Bilam should have understood that Hashem might have been sending him a message not to curse the Bnei Yisroel. R’ Biderman concludes that when something unusual occurs, a person should ask himself whether it is a message from Hashem that he should stop what he is doing. It seems logical that the malach was sent to deter Bilam because he was setting out to do something evil. The Kedushas Levi, however, writes that even if someone sets out to fulfill a command from Hashem, if he finds that unusual circumstances impede his progress without logical explanation, then he should conclude that Hashem might not wish him to fulfill that mission any longer. The Kedushas Levi explains that Hashem had, in fact, commanded Bilam to accompany Balak’s emissaries — but only on condition that he would speak the words that Hashem would put in his mouth. The malach was sent to test Bilam’s adherence to Hashem’s messages by sending him warnings through the donkey’s behavior. Bilam ignored the warnings because he had evil intentions in going on the mission. We must be careful not to misinterpret events in life as signs and messages from Hashem, but we must also be careful not to ignore possible warnings that we may be heading in a wrong direction. Certainly if a person is doing something that he knows or suspects to be wrong, he should stop himself – with or without warnings. But if a person sets out to do what he feels is a mitzvah and encounters difficulties that he suspects may be a warning, he should consult da’as Torah. Michael encountered unusual and unpleasant circumstances at each stage of his travels on Tisha B’Av. Although he did not immediately understand or heed the warnings he received on that day, he did heed the greater message of that day’s unusual events, and committed himself not to travel on Tisha B’Av again. *Name has been changed to protect Michael’s privacy.

Q: Is it muttar to use insect spray on creatures on Shabbos? A: There are two different methods when it comes to spraying insects. The label on the bottle should be read to determine which method a given spray uses. 1. Sprays that repel the insects. (These sprays discourage insects from approaching.) 2. Sprays that poison and instantly kill the insects. There are two of Lamed Tes Melachos involved: 1. TZEDA (CAPTURING)

One of the Lamed Tes Melachos is tzeida, capturing any living creature (taking away his freedom to move). • It is assur min haTorah to hunt any living creature that is commonly hunted by hunters (in order to make use of it). • It is assur d’rabbanon to trap any living creatures, even those that are not commonly trapped by hunters (and no benefit would be derived from having them). • If one traps a creature into an enclosure, but it will still very difficult to capture the creature, he is oiver only on tzeida m’drabbanon. If however, one traps a creature into an enclosure in which it is easy to capture the creature, he is oiver on tzeida d’oiraisa. • If one chases a bird into a room that has open windows, this is not considered tzeida, even d’rabbanon because the bird can escape by flying out of the window, However, if one closes the window after the bird has flown into the room, this would be considered tzeida. It is important to differentiate between tzeida d’oraisa and tzeida d’rabbanon in the following scenarios. 2. HASHOCHET (SLAUGHTERING)

One of the Lamed Tes Melachos is ha’shochet, slaughtering. This means “netilas neshama” or “taking away the life of any living creature.” This applies to even part of a living creature like the wings. Halachos: • If one is confronted with a potentially life-threatening animal or insect, one must kill it even if is Shabbos. For example, snakes or dining needles are considered dangerous, and therefore one is obligated to kill them directly using insect spray or any poison. Obviously, one should take utmost precautions to remain safe. • If there is a mosquito virus outbreak and authorities recommend exterminating the inside of the house, one may do so by preferably spraying into the air, but should refrain from spraying directly onto the mosquitoes. • In such a situation it is preferable to have a non-Yid

spray. • If one is not sure whether something is dangerous, and the creature is calm and is not chasing a human, then he should spray the creature in a nonobvious way, by doing other activity at the same time, so as to camouflage his action. There are some leniencies given by Chazal b’mokom tza’ar: • If one knows that the insects or animals are not life-threatening, but they could bite or sting in a manner which would require medical attention (even orally), one shall first try to trap them. If it is not possible, it is muttar to kill them if there are young children, babies, or people with allergies present. • If the insects or bees are flying around wildly or chasing human beings (for example, bees in the sukkah), one should: 1. Trap them. If that is not an option, one should: 2. Use repellent spray. If that is also not an option: 3. One may kill them, but must camouflage the action. • For creatures like mosquitoes, one may use spray that repels them and does not kill them, but one should leave a door or window open in order for them to be able to escape. • If there are people who become petrified and hysterical in the presence of wasps, and cannot be calmed down, one may spray anything at them as long as he does so in a non-obvious way. Try to use repellent spray only, and leave one door open, so the wasps have an escape route. • If one has lice in one’s hair, and it is itching, one may use the appropriate solution to kill them, but one may not comb them out. (According to Chazal lice in the hair are not really considered living creatures.) • Pinworms that hurt may be removed on Shabbos. • If there are many flies buzzing around a garbage can, one should not close it completely, because this will trap the creatures. This applies to trapping a fly between a window and its screen. • If there is no other toilet available and there are flies or insects in the toilet bowl, one may flush the toilet because of kavod habriyos.

It truly was a mansion. Sara looked around the bedroom, the walls papered in elegant designs, the cleanliness gleaming off the knobs and mirrors, the empty house outfitted with toilet paper rolls and Q-tips and towels and shoe racks. The parquet gleamed around the edges of the rug. Her children were sleeping, but she couldn’t sleep, and she sat at the edge of the sofa in the bay window of the master bedroom, and looked out. Expanses of grass-carpeted gardens sprawled out all the way to the forested hill below. The sky, still twinkling in this dark corner of the world, was starting to lighten. She was tired, but also winded and scared. Today she had survived a mother’s worst nightmare, a person’s worst thoughts and fears, and a neighbor’s wretched helplessness. She was here. There was carpet under her slippers and air conditioning over her head. Her house was melted and charred, but she was here. They were all here. “How long can we stay here?” she asked Goldy, who, surprisingly was also up when Sara went down to try out the Keurig, with Costco boxes of various flavors of coffee next to it. “Did my children wake you?” “No, I couldn’t sleep. Too shaken up. I’d rather not dream,” Goldy shared, then laughed self-consciously. There was a tray of pastries on the table. Cheese buns, croissants, the best of Glauber’s Kosher Bakery. Coffee gurgled in the machine. Sara got busy pulling dainty mugs from the cabinet. “We’ll be here for a while. We had to move to Monsey. And now that we’re left stranded…” Goldy scowled out the window but she adjusted her face easily. “We can stay here as long as we need to,” she added, answering Sara’s question. “You’re welcome to stay. Both of us will eventually settle back.” The house was spacious, the sun streaming in and highlighting the dust dance in the empty spaces. The kitchen was fully outfitted. “The cleaning lady will be here from

Why?” Goldy shrugged. “We can be here as long as we want. They use it as a summer home, but the summer is over for them. They went to Switzerland for the week.” She could hear the birdsong from the open window. In the backyard, the boys were swinging and singing. “My husband’s grilling today, so…” Goldy hesitated. “So I hope you’ll come. I mean, we have to talk about living in the same house. It’s funny,” she said and laughed, “but doable. With clearly discussed boundaries.” This girl was more practical than Sara had given her credit for. “We can look at it as if we’re in the same hotel,” Sara said. “We all need to abide by the rules, so we can all enjoy our stay.” Goldy nodded. She opened a fully stocked freezer. “Who is your cousin?” “You know Yaakov Kasten? My contractor? He built this for his parents.” ***** It was hard to leave the idyllic, vacation-style home to go to work, especially when she had to drive all her children to their respective schools, now scattered around the entire width of the town. Her children were tired from the excitement and fear of the night before, and they enjoyed roaming the mansion, just looking. After dropping them all off, Sara drove home, to the house she’d lived in and nurtured for so long. Now, from a fresh perspective, the house looked small, forlorn, haunted, the yard around it sprawling and overgrown. There were gaping holes in its side and roof. The house next door was torn apart in black, vengeful ash. She opened her door and stepped in. The stairs were soggy. She was afraid to step on them. The sides were open to the elements and the wind was blowing in. A bird settled on a kitchen hinge before flying out through the open hole. Tears came to her eyes and she blinked them away. Baruch Hashem, everyone was alive. A fire as hungry and demanding as this one could have eaten one of them, smothered them in its heat. The neighbors were okay. Her children were okay. The children loved the temporary house, and so did she, even though living was Goldy was something new to maneuver. Goldy was an intelligent young woman, kind and very efficient. She had already drawn up laundry room charts, of when each family could use it. How angry Sara had been about sharing her back-

yard with a bunch of people who didn’t respect her property. Life was interesting, ironic. This house was unlivable. For so long, she had fought to preserve its holiness, along with its smell, which now was overlaid with the scent of ash, along with its very nature of housing a happy Yiddishe family. It was destroyed. It would have to be demolished to be built up. She felt such sadness. Today, she would take the day off. Maybe she would sit outside her temporary home, the mansion that didn’t belong to her but to Kasten, her nemesis. Maybe she could just breathe in the fresh scent of flowers while the birds sang songs. It was the only constant, the only thing guaranteed not to be lost — the ability to praise Hashem. ***** The children were in bed. There was something about warmly lit modern spaces with new, white bathrooms that just made life feel different, helping the children settle cozily into beds not their own. And Kasten was there. Sara had asked Goldy to call him. “I hope you’re enjoying it here,” he said to Sara. “My parents put a lot of love into this house; they taught me the joy of creating

I’ll have another two storefronts there, so that will maximize foot traffic. Foot traffic? Storefronts? Three storefronts in the basement of her home?! Sara was feeling constricted again. Storefronts. Not only wouldn’t she have a front yard, a backyard, or privacy, not only would she share the lot with five other families, but she’d also be living on top of the store. Her store. Why had she stopped paying her home insurance just before Pesach? How could this have happened? She hadn’t had enough

money, because her store wasn’t making enough, and she was neglectful of the business. Kasten was not. He was offering her a win-win. She could still sell her lot to him and hightail it out of there, with money enough to buy something on the very outskirts of Monsey, a sixty-year-old home with lots of grass. Or she could get with the times, and earn an apartment, a rental, and an attractive storefront. She’d have to sacrifice her values and desire for nature, for privacy — but here she was, sharing a home with another family, because sometimes life happened. A natural force had destroyed her home. And she had to move closer to the kindness of her neighbor. Sometimes, faced with new choices, we have to pick the best ones. Like now. Like for the future. THE END

THE TRUMP-PENCE TICKET

On Friday, July 15th, Donald Trump released a statement to announce that he had chosen Indiana Governor Mike (Michael Richard) Pence as his running mate. Pence, who is 57 years old and married with three adult kids, has been in politics since 2001 when he was elected to the US House of Representatives from his home state Indiana. He went on to serve for twelve years until 2012-13 when he ran for Governor of Indiana and won. Pence is considered a strong conservative with ties to the tea party. In large part, Trump chose him to unite the Republican Party. He is Midwestern born and bred, clean cut, very religious, and a constitutional conservative with a history in politics and warm ties with Washington insiders. These were all areas in which Trump was lacking, and the reaction from the Republican party seemed to indicate that they approved of Trump’s pick. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnel told reporters, “It’s a good move by Donald Trump. We look forward to enthusiastically supporting the ticket,” and Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said that Pence was a “very good friend.” On Saturday, July 16th, Trump and Pence held a joint press conference with much of their respective

families in attendance. They also did a joint interview. Pence has previously come out against some of Trump’s political positions, but in their interview, Trump said, “We’re different people. I understand that.” And Pence responded, “Our styles are different. But, I promise you, our vision is exactly the same.” Because he is relatively unknown on the national political scene, both the Trump and Clinton camps will get a chance to try to define him to the American people. Trump has touted Pence as a “solid, solid person,” while Hillary Clinton called him “the most extreme pick of a generation.” With the Republican convention taking place in Cleveland this week, Republicans are working hard to show a strong, unified front, one that will instill voter confidence and bolster their chances at winning the White House.

RNC CONVENTION UNDERWAY The Republican Party is hosting its convention this week, July 18th–21st, in Cleveland, Ohio. The Democrats will be hosting their convention next week, July 25th–28th in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The convention is a four-day affair at which the delegates adopt the party’s platform (the party’s official principles and policies), as well as cast their votes for the nominee. There are speeches given by important members of the party, as well as people familiar with different aspects of the platform and the nominees’ friends and family. The final night culminates with a speech by the candidate accepting the party’s nomination. At the convention, the parties try to bring everyone together, highlighting the ideals they are fighting for and promoting their nominee’s qualities, expressing why the candidate would be best suited to lead the country over the next four years.

CHAOS IN THE CONVENTION FLOOR Despite Donald Trump having earned the nomination through the primary process, many Republicans still refused to acknowledge and accept that he would be their party’s nominee. And so on Monday, the first day of the Republican Convention, a group of delegations from nine states demanded a roll call vote to approve both the rules on which the convention would be run and the nomination of Trump. Initially, the vote has been cast in a voice vote manner, with everyone in favor calling out “aye,” and everyone against calling out “nay.” A minimum of seven states are needed to request a roll call vote, a vote in which each delegate’s name is called and they declare their vote. After a voice vote was taken and the “aye” declared the winner, which means the rules had been passed and Trump voted in, the delegation from those nine states protested loudly, demanding a roll call. The convention chairman, Arkansas Representative Steve Womack, attempted to get the floor in order but was shouted down and left the stage. After fifteen minutes of chaos, in which the Iowa and Colorado delegations left the floor, Womack returned and announced that three of the nine delegations had pulled

back their request for a roll call vote, so the minimum was not reached and then proceeded to conduct another voice vote, which, of course, the “ayes” won. Although the crisis was resolved, the image of unity that the Republicans, especially the pro-Trump faction, had hoped to project, was shattered. It was clear that even in victory, the Republican Party was not wholly unified behind Donald Trump.

The prime time speaker for Republicans in the foray night of the convention was Melania Trump, the wife of the nominee and potentially the future first lady. Melania is generally a silent figure, standing behind her husband without saying much. Trump’s children are seen as much more outspoken. So this was a chance for her to introduce herself to the country. And initially the reviews were good. Her speech was well delivered and surprised many. But then a rumbling started when some noticed that a portion of her speech sounded strikingly similar to the one that first lady Michelle Obama delivered to the Democratic Convention almost eight years ago. The Trump campaign denied the claims of plagiarism and said no one would be fired over the mishap, but it was an unfortunate introduction for Mrs. Trump and one the campaign certainly would have hoped to avoid.

Grilling Nothing signifies summer more than the smell of charcoal burning and meat grilling. Besides the awesome taste of grilled food, and the versatility and choices, I find the best part to be that the kitchen stays relatively clean and completely cool. These three recipes are all superb marinades for different meats. I specified which meats are best used, but feel free to adapt the marinades to the meat of your choice.

SPICE-RUBBED RIB STEAK

2 bone-in rib steaks 2 tablespoons brown sugar 2 tablespoons paprika 3 tablespoons salt 2 teaspoons black pepper 2 teaspoons oregano 2 teaspoons thyme

1. Mix all ingredients (besides steak). 2. Pat steaks dry. Rub 1 tablespoon of the spice mixture onto the steaks. Set on a parchment paper, and let sit for one hour before grilling. 3. Preheat the grill to high. Grill steak for about 4-5 minutes on each side for medium-rare. Let sit for 5 minutes before serving.

1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 tablespoon oil 1 teaspoon fresh grated ginger

1. In a medium bowl, combine all marinade ingredients. 2. Using a sharp knife, cut score marks in the meat. Seasoned Chef: If you have a grill with three flames or more, you should always use indirect heat: Leave all flames on and grill the meat for 3-4 minutes on each side. Then shut the center flame, which is under the meat, and leave the side flames on. This causes the meat to cook through well, without becoming dry and rubbery.

1 pack chicken wings ½ cup orange juice, divided 1 ½ teaspoons grated orange zest, divided 1 frozen garlic cube

2 tablespoons oil 1 teaspoon thyme Salt and pepper 1/3 cup mayonnaise

1. In a small bowl, combine ¼ cup orange juice, 1 teaspoon orange zest, garlic, oil, thyme, salt, and pepper. Pour over wings and marinade for about 30 minutes or overnight. 2. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, ¼ cup orange juice, and ½ teaspoon orange zest. Mix well and use as dipping sauce alongside wings. 3. Aircraft spotting, also known as plane spotting, is a popular pastime worldwide. It is a hobby in which aviation enthusiasts track different planes and their movement, and with binoculars and digital cameras, they take note of different aircraft - their sizes, colors, and countries of origin. They observe interesting artwork or insignia features, camouflage markings, badges, or code letters, note the vapor trails, placements of wings, and search for vintage and very recent models. They also observe the aeronautics - how fast the planes typically fly and their landing and take-off patterns. In the wake of the war on terror, the tightening of security affected plane spotters, as well, and limited the areas where aircraft can be observed. Therefore, when visiting any airports, be aware that you are not allowed to stop off just anywhere to observe the planes and may be asked not to take any photographs. Be respectful of security personnel if you are stopped, and don’t lean against fences or go into restricted areas (usually marked with signs). There’s special wonder (especially for Monsey children, for whom airplanes are just tiny objects in the sky) in seeing mammoth flying aluminum eagles from up close. Although the era of observation decks in airports is more or less in the past, there are still spots where the planes landing and taking off can be observed, and the busyness of an airport experience in itself is also exciting. Plane watching makes for a fun, full — and best of all, free — excursion. T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

With mounting horror and grief, the world watched as another attack was perpetrated by ISIS, this time in Nice, France, on Thursday, July 14th, Bastille Day (French independence day). The terrorist was a Tunisian-born immigrant who deliberately drove a nineteen-ton truck into a crowd of people attending celebrations, killing at least 84 and wounding many, many more before being shot by police, after exchanging gunfire with them. A total of 303 people were taken to hospitals following the attacks. Of those, 121 remain in hospital, 30 of whom are children, and 26 people are still in intensive care — including five children. Among those killed were ten children, including an eleven-year-old American boy, Bro-

die Copeland, who was killed along with his father Sean. This attack has been the last in a long string of attacks perpetrated by ISIS in the west, as well as Middle Eastern countries. In a show of solidarity across the world, landmarks were once again lit up in the colors of the French flag; blue, white, and red. And in France, grief turned to anger as many felt the government was not doing enough to keep them safe. Rudy Salles, a Deputy Mayor of Nice said, “The first terror attack, okay. The second terror attack, okay. The third terror attack — we want action.” This is a sentiment strongly echoed by the citizens of France.

In events echoing those in Dallas last week, three police officers were killed and another three injured by a gunman after responding to a call of shots fired at around 9 AM local time on Sunday, July 17th. The shooter was Gavin Long of Kansas City, Missouri, a former marine who claimed not to be affiliated with any groups, but had a history of protesting the treatment of black men by police. He was killed in the shootout with police. The victims were Officers Montrell Jackson, 32, Matthew Gerald, 41, and Brad Garafola, 45. Baton Rouge has been roiled by protests since white officers shot and killed Alton Sterling, a 37-year-old black man, on July 5. This shooting, along with the shooting of Philando Castile, had set off a string of protests across the nation, one which ended in a massacre of officers in Dallas, Texas. And now another large-scale attack was perpetrated against police in this city itself. There was an immediate and strong response from pol-

iticians on all levels of government from the White House down. President Obama said, “I condemn, in the strongest sense of the word, the attack on law enforcement in Baton Rouge… there is no justification for violence against law enforcement… They right no wrongs. They advance no causes.” Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said, “It’s unspeakable that these men risking their lives to protect and serve this community were taken out the way that they were. The violence, the hatred, just has to stop.” In a poignant statement, officer Montrell Jackson, one of today’s victims had responded to the unrest on July 8th by saying, “...I love this city, but I wonder if this city loves me. In uniform I get nasty, hateful looks and out of uniform some consider me a threat. ...These are trying times. Please don’t let hate infect your heart.” Indeed, if police officers must look over their shoulders every time they respond to a call, we will not be able to function as a society.

Walk down any main street and you’ll see thousands of people coming and going, busy with daily life — life that involves countless disposable goods used for food and drink, reading material, packaging, and just about anything else you can think of. With our ever burgeoning society and an industry keeping pace with the desire for newer, better products and the constant need for “more,” our generation has come to be known as the “throw-away society.” Mass production in Third World countries frequently involving the use of low-quality products also contributes to the overall mentality that everything is replaceable, causing consumers to fall into the detrimental cycle of buying and dumping, over and over again. The typical American generates nearly double the amount of garbage than citizens of other countries, with our average 4.6 pounds of garbage per person, per day translating into roughly 251 million tons of rubbish per year. But what happens to all of those things we’ve finished using and dumped into the garbage can? Most of us don’t think twice about trash, and it’s hard to picture what happens to your bag of unwanted leftovers after it disappears into the ever-hungry jaws of the garbage truck. Harder yet is picturing how that bag of garbage affects the ecology of the world and impacts the lives of other living things. After all, it’s only trash, right? The truth is that the products you’ve finished with still have a long life ahead of them after you’ve tossed them away. What kind of life they’ll lead, however, depends on the choices you make.

RECYCLING Items like paper, plastic bottles, and non-waxed cardboard that are lucky enough to find their way into the green and blue recycling bins head to a recycling center where they’ll be cleaned and combined with virgin fibers to be reconstructed into new items, not only saving vital resources such as trees, but also saving room in landfills. Beyond traditional means of recycling, however, there are many creative ways to keep your disposables employed, such as reusing plastic containers

for homemade food products, or turning a cardboard box into a gorgeous window valance. Some enthusiasts have combined their love of cycling together with their passion for recycling to bring the world quality biking accessories, leaving one to wonder what else can be done with garbage at hand. Izhar Gafni of Eretz Yisroel, for instance, constructed a bike made from recycled cardboard that is capable of carrying up to 275 lbs. Costing only $9 to make, Gafni has plans to create environmentally friendly strollers as well! Joining him in the green pursuit is Kranium, a bike helmet com-

pany. Created with cardboard innards, the Kranium helmet was tested to absorb up to three times more impact than a standard helmet, and weighs 15% less than typical designs. If such types of creative concepts catch on, they’ll provide great ways to keep recyclables from landfills where they don’t belong.

LANDFILLS Landfills are one of this generation’s necessary evils, blessedly ridding of us of rubbish in our daily lives, but piling it up into mounds upon mounds of germ-ridden, smelly garbage in what would otherwise be lovely surroundings. When garbage exits your life upon a garbage truck, it heads to a transit station where it stored, warehouse-like, until other, bigger trucks can come and scoop it and it’s smelly brethren up again, to bring them to a landfill. Landfills are gigantic dumping sites, typically placed far away from populated areas. Smack in the middle of often gorgeous countrysides, gigantic towers of garbage can be found slowly decaying. These lands that are host to the mountains of refuse have to undergo rigorous safety testing before being labeled a “landfill,” to ensure that hazardous waste doesn’t leech its way back into our drinking water and the like, but this testing does not guarantee that decomposing garbage juice truly has no impact on the surrounding world. Thousands of pounds of trash arrive at landfills daily, and upon arrival, the trash is poured onto a layer of clay, plastic, or both that separates the new arrivals from the mountains of muck beneath. At the end of the day, the new garbage will be covered the same way as the layer below it, and the process will continue the next day in the same manner. Due to the lack of oxygen circulating between layers, and the complex

drainage system that removes the black, toxin-filled garbage juice called “leachate” from the refuse, it takes many long years for garbage to decompose. Perhaps the most scary impact of landfills is the afore-mentioned leachate, though the creation of methane gas is an uncomfortable factor as well. Methane is created when garbage decomposes, and aside from being an explosion hazard, methane gas contains the incredible ability to both absorb heat, and to react with oxygen. These two traits mean that more carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, potentially resulting in heat waves, lower crop yield, and the risk of wildfires. Leachate though, sends more of a shiver up my spine. The thick black malodorous liquid is full of toxins, ammonia, pathogens, and chemicals, and poses a serious health hazard for anyone who comes into contact with it. Thankfully, there are treatment plants that collect leachate and attempt to purify it of many of the toxins, though understandably, certain amounts of dangerous substances are still present even after treatment. That treated liquid is then frequently released back into the environment, together with any untreated elements. Additionally, despite best efforts to contain leachate leaks, it is estimated that up to 82% of landfills will have, or have had, leachate leaks. As soon as leachate is released into water, it enters the water cycle… and into your home and so-called “potable water” you use for drinking and bathing.

By Rochel Gruen The amount of garbage generated by a country each year is astronomical. Different countries have come up with different creative and innovative systems to lower the number. Here are just a few examples: In Germany, the Green Dot system has been one of the most successful recycling initiatives, which has literally put packaging on a diet. The crux is that manufacturers and retailers have to pay for a “Green Dot” on products: the more packaging there is, the higher the fee. This clever system has led to less paper, thinner glass and less metal being used, thus creating less garbage to be recycled. The net result: a drastic decline of about one million tons less garbage than normal every year. In order to motivate citizens residing in Switzerland to recycle as much as possible, official garbage bags need to be purchased in many of its cities. These bags can cost the equivalent of close to $3 for a bag of about 12 gallons. Thinking of sneaking an unofficial bag in the bin? If spotted, Swiss officials and police often open up the “contraband.” They search for evidence such as old bills which contain names and addresses connecting the bag to the household/person the bag originates from. The fine? Up to CHF 10,000. And yes, the importance of limiting waste has come to the U.S. as well. If you’re in Seattle and want to toss food in the trash, well, think again. Wasting food will now earn you a scarlet letter or tag, to be more accurate. The bright red tag, posted on a garbage bin, tells everyone who sees it that you’ve violated a new city law that makes it illegal to put food into trash cans. T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

ever, buy durable goods, rather than disposables. • Minimize food waste. Here in America, we are used to super-sized meals — though we rarely finish what we prepare. That extra bit of leftovers means an extra bit of dangerous leachate! • Recycle! The more goods you recycle, the less you’ve contributed to methane and leachate creation. • Learn to compost your yard waste. Grass and leaves take up a huge percentage of landfill space, and instead of turning into garbage juice, yard waste can be turned into plant food to use in your own garden or yard! • Buy natural, loose foods, such as fruits, vegetable and grains to make your own healthy, homemade, package-free meals. You can only gain by going package-free! • Never, ever litter! Take care to toss waste in the appropriate receptacles. Of course, every person can only do his best to make life-changes, but even small steps become great when matched by community effort. By simply dropping our trash in the correct receptacles and attempting to “reuse, reduce, and recycle,” not only will Monsey take on a fresh-faced glow, but we’ll know that we’re doing the best for own health as well. It all comes down to the choices we make. So, next time you’re holding that empty milk carton in hand, just ask yourself: Blue bin? Or leachate?

“Which Grocery Store Do You Shop At?” By Itta Shayowitz When it comes to moving, a lot of people just don’t get it. They don’t really appreciate the enormity of it all. They have no clue what it means to pick up and start over again in a brandnew place. When we came to Monsey, we literally had to start our lives over again. Sure, there were the big changes. New shul, new schools, new neighbors, new friends for the kids. That’s to be expected. But then there’s also the seemingly mundane things that change as well. For example, finding a new grocery store. Finding the perfect grocery is no simple task. Ask any balabusta, and she’ll instantly tell you the pros and cons of every grocery within a ten-mile radius of her home. Groceries are an integral part of a Jewish homemaker’s daily life, if only because we need to feed our families. So having a good grocery can make all the difference in the world. In addition, residents of Monsey take their grocery shopping very seriously. Back in Brooklyn, people would get acquainted by asking each other, “What shul do you daven in?” I quickly

discovered that the Monsey version of that question is: “What grocery do you shop at?” Nowadays, there are many ways to shop for your groceries, so there’s really no longer a need to actually go to the store. With faxes and phone orders, you can stay at home while buying food. But you have to be careful. The one trick to realize when making orders at home is to be very specific. If you want plums but don’t want to end up with a box of prunes, you need to clearly spell out the words “black California plums” on your order. One Thursday evening at about 6:00 PM, I had just started putting t h e kids to b e d . Men-

achem was playing “hard to get” and had crawled into a kitchen cabinet in a desperate attempt to hide from me. Tziporah was sitting on the floor with her pajama pants sitting on top of her head, sort of like a hat. The baby was crying. She was probably going through a phase. Suddenly my phone buzzed. I figured it must be David calling to tell me he was on his way home from work. But when I answered the phone, my eyes widened in horror. The call had come from an unknown number. Dreaming big? Looking for a good business deal? You may decide to try your luck at the dumpsters; after all “one man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” Literally. And if you don’t believe that, here are some incidents — probably the most extreme cases you’ll ever hear about, but it may still be worth a try. Edward St. John regularly searched through the dumpsters at a local Massachusetts convenience store looking for lottery tickets. He hit the jackpot, literally, in 2005 when he found a $1 million winner. The original purchaser actually sued St. John who had to give up $140,000 of his winnings. But it’s still safe to say he’s one lucky man. A Pennsylvania resident purchased a painting for $4 at a local flea market. He simply liked the frame, and thought he could restore it. When he couldn’t restore the frame to its original luster, he nearly tossed it together with the painting into the trash. Before he did that, though, he decided to take the painting out of the frame, and in doing so, discovered an old folded-up piece of paper behind it. He had found one of 24 known copies of the Declaration of Independence! The man’s $4 investment had earned him over $2 million. Again, in 2006, a Nashville man paid less than $2.50 for what appeared to be a copy of The Declaration of Independence. But this was no ordinary copy — it was one of several that were commissioned by John Q. Adams. The copy was sold at an auction for over $475,000! (The moral of the story: If you see a copy of The Declaration of Independence at a yard sale, buy it!)

In Kentucky, a man found $22,000 worth of U.S. savings bonds lying in a barrel of scrap metal at the recycling center he worked at. Maybe even more surprising is the fact that the man, Mike Rogers, tracked down the rightful owner of the savings bonds and returned them to him. Those were the lucky people, the “one in a million” that discovered treasures presumed to be trash. But then there are items that although we know what they are, we nevertheless choose to throw away. Those very worthless items (to us), are actually very valuable to others. In fact, a recently retired NYC sanitation worker, Mr. Molina, started collecting items from the trash some 30 years ago. His collection now takes up an entire warehouse floor in Harlem, where everything — three decades of NYC trash! — is perfectly sorted on tables, from family photos, frames, clothes, typewriters, and more. And then there are those who made their fortune from cardboard boxes. Cardboard boxes are recyclable. The recycling process turns the cardboard into an oatmeallike consistency of paper pulp. That pulp can then be turned back into more boxes, which make cardboard boxes valuable

even after they are emptied of their contents and hauled away. Although companies do pay service providers to take their garbage and boxes, the haulers also cash in by selling the cardboard to recyclers. It’s not just the haulers that are aware of the cardboard’s value (approximately $100 a ton); some people steal it before the haulers can pick it up. One notable crime spree involved three New Jersey men who, over the course of about four months, made off with over 900 tons of cardboard. While most illegal cardboard runners simply steal the boxes lying on the side of the road, or from behind large stores like Wal-Mart or Target, this New Jersey trio was more creative. They created a sham corporation called “Metro Paper, Inc.” and rented trucks. Then, they monitored the pickup schedules at large stores which went through a high amount of boxes. Once they had the schedule down, they made sure they arrived before the legitimate haulers, picked up the boxes and moved on to their next target. Seems like a waste of time — or, a crime that’s not worth the risk? The group sold their treasure trove of used cardboard boxes for just north of $100,000.

MY LIVING MIRACLE

I tenderly stroked my daughter’s freshly bathed curls, planted a kiss on her forehead, and tucked her under the fuzzy covers. Peace and quiet reigned at last. Resuming my evening chores, I relished the tranquility. As I wiped away the remaining dinner cutlery, a shrill cry echoed throughout my placid home. I shivered at this sudden outburst and darted up the stairs where saw my fiveyear-old daughter sobbing, tremulously clutching the fingers on her left hand. I gingerly removed her right hand, to reveal blackened, burnt fingers. The moment I touched her arm, I sensed a forceful shock rush through my entire being. While I hastened downstairs with my precious daughter wailing in my arm, the faint scent of smoke and fire tickled my nostrils. Over the child’s painfilled cries, the blaring smoke detectors shrieked with their menacing echo. The tension was tangible. Like an angel from heaven, my husband appeared at the doorstep. All at once, he took in the sight of my back bent over the kitchen sink, my daughter’s arm under torrents of water. He listened to her yowling and smelled the odor emanating from the bedroom upstairs. Instinctively, he raced to the bedroom. The sight that met his eyes was one that surpassed his worst night-

mares. Gusts of fire and smoke burst forth from the polka-dotted lamp perched at the edge of the nightstand. My frantic husband ran in a frenzy for a cup of water, and then realized how detrimental this would be for an electrical current. With no alternative left, his hat served as the savior, with which he desperately fanned the flames, just moments before they reached the outlet. At last, after some futile attempts, the stubborn flames surrendered their battle in defeat. Windows were opened wide, despite the frigid wind howling outdoors. I securely wrapped my trembling daughter in a warm coverlet and lovingly placed her on the living room sofa, while waiting for Hatzolah to arrive. At last I released a sigh of relief, pent up with post trauma emotion. When I pondered the events that had occurred, so rudely disrupting my serene nighttime, I marveled at the multitude of miracles miraculously merging to save my daughter, my family, and my home. The events recapped in my mind as I replayed the horrific scene once more. Unaware that the light bulb had been cracked, leaving just the metal base fixed in the bulb compartment, the child had switched the lamp on. When the room remained dark, she had investigated the cause, and inserted her index finger into the base. Impulsively, she had withdrawn her little fingers as the prickling sensation traveled through her body. At that moment, the lamp had erupted into raging flames. Caught off guard, she escaped the bedroom, terror written over her young face. Hadn’t she sensed the shock, her long curls

My husband’s timely arrival had saved the day as he extinguished the fire which menacingly inched towards the walls. The gnarled metal, remnants of a once proud lampshade, are saved guardedly, to act as a remembrance how we are forever indebted for every breath, every moment, every day…

At the same time, we need to learn to handle plastic correctly if we don’t want its negative aspects to further affect the world we live in. As with everything in life, balance is key. Let’s learn about plastic and the roles it plays. Most importantly, let’s learn why we need to make wise decisions regarding plastic disposal.

FAST FACTS • Most types of plastic are made in a chemical process that involves the use of petroleum, coal, or crude oil. • Although people have experimented with forms of plant-derived plastic for hundreds of years, the result was not like the sturdy plastic we are accustomed to today. The current generation of plastic began in 1907 when Leo Baekeland, discovered how to make plastic from fossil fuels. Since then, plastics have become one of the most convenient inventions on Earth. • Scientists are currently working on a perfecting a new sort of plastic called “bioplastic” which is made out of items like corn or tapioca starch. These types of plastics are able to break down in a landfill, unlike typical plastics. However, they cause the same old problem of creating methane and leachate. (See “The Choices We Make.”)

THE DOWNSIDE OF PLASTIC: • 11% of household waste is plastic — with 40% of that being from disposable bottles • Plastic is not naturally found on Earth, and as such, is not able to quickly break down. The average decomposition time of one water bottle is estimated to be at a minimum of 450 years. With plastic only being invented in 1907, that means every single plastic item ever invented is still in existence. • By recycling, we can use that already existing plastic and turn it into something new, helping to prevent more plastics from overwhelming our world. • Most of that still-in-existence plastic is either part of a towering landfill or floating in our oceans. In fact, in the Pacific Ocean are “islands” of discarded plastic — one of them being twice the size of Texas! • An estimated 13 billion plastic bottles are tossed out each year. • Plastic bags and other plastic garbage kill as many as 1 million sea creatures every year, along with many birds and mammals on land as well. Tragically, infants have also been known to choke on plastic improperly disposed of. • 13 billion plastic bags are formed each year, at an average of 300 pieces per adult, per year. If not recycled into something new, those billions of bags will still be floating around somewhere…

THE UPSIDE OF PLASTIC • Plastic is one of the leading items used in the health industry, with everything from sterile gloves to syringes to tubing to disposable bags for blood transfusions... and so on and so forth, being used to make our healthcare system more sanitary — and as a result, able to prevent many bacteriarelated deaths. • You know those plastic water bottles you rarely think twice about tossing into the garbage? Only 25 of those are needed to be recycled in order to produce one adult size fleece jacket. Something to think about next time you down your Dasani… • Thanks to modern packaging, food spoilage is down a huge percentage of what it was in times gone by. • Plastics used in car manufacturing results in lighter vehicles which use less energy, saving more fossil fuel in the long run. • Vinyl flooring (made from plastic) keeps many trees from getting hacked down on a yearly basis, leaving us with a nicer view, more shade, and cleaner air. • Plastic inventions are more than just convenient, they can even save lives. Take the Hippo Roller bucket for instance; in African and Asian countries, many poor women and children have to shlep small pails of water many miles in order to survive the day. On average, this collection takes between three to nine hours daily. Along came the Hippo Roller, a bucket able to hold five times the amount the average person was able to carry before its invention. Now many poor people are able to save up to 30% of the time and risk less injury than when they used to carry the pails home on their heads. • 3D printing is one of the newest crazes, taking the world by storm. While some people are busy loading the plastic pellets into their printers to create marketable objects like shoes or computer parts, medical engineers have been working hard to create plastic bones and organs that function almost like the real thing. The first studies have recently been completed on rats, with the printed bone structures being well-acclimated into the animals’ bodies. Researchers say that it is only a matter of time before more complex organs will be available, even for human use. • The FDA just recently approved a new plastic stent called “Absorb” for use in coronary artery disease patients that could benefit from a temporary stent. This device does its job opening up the artery, and then completely dissolves within about two years, having been made from that aforementioned new category of bioplastics.

FYI: Massage can relax and loosen the muscles made sore by bad posture, allowing your body to position itself in its natural posture.

Tell us about your initiation into the world of massage. My grandmother often used to ask me for a massage to relax her when she was older. She loved the way I did it, and suggested that maybe I should train for massage therapy. Thanks to her, I went for it! I found a school that was very accommodating and respectful to the needs of its many frum students, and the rest is history. I’m also the type of person who believes in the mind-body-soul connection very strongly. If your body is in good form, your mind is freer to be positive, and you have more energy to deal with what your neshama wants and needs. There’s more clarity in life! You can daven more calmly, be patient with people, think about others’ needs, fit chesed into your life, etc. In massage therapy, I can actually see how relevant and true it all is; how relaxing people spins around their lives.

FYI: While some of the deeper tissues of the body cannot be easily accessed by a massage therapist, the release of more superficial layers of muscles may also affect these deeper layers. This can lead to both superficial and deep tissues finding a better alignment and balance.

Have you had any interactions with doctors in the field of conventional medicine in your capacity as an massage therapist? Not much. Some people tell me their doctor told them to go for massage therapy, but usually, it’s the chiropractor I work together with. Chiropractors shift misaligned bones back into place, and massage therapists take care of the muscles that have become contracted during the misalignment. What is the most common ailment you treat? Though I believe it’s important for people to get a massage at least once a month to clear away a buildup of tension, a lot of heimishe people don’t fargin themselves the expenditure. Therefore, most of the time clients come for emergencies such as a stiff neck, shoulder, or arm. Back pain is also commonly treated through massage. How do you maintain that calm, peaceful atmosphere that is so important in a massage? I do a few minutes of yoga on my own before I start working on a client to release tension. I find it challenging not to imbibe the negative energy from a client who comes in with a lot of tension. Any remarkable story you want to share? I remember one client who had a terrible paralysis reaction on one side of her body to a form of anesthesia. She couldn’t even talk! Since she could only afford to come once a week — though I’d really recommend more than that for her condition — her progress wasn’t as quick as I’d have liked, but eventually she regained sensation in her paralyzed limbs and was able to start talking!

FYI: Most states that regulate massage therapists require them to have a minimum of 500 hours of training from an accredited training program. Some states require over a 1,000, and many massage therapy students supplement their training with additional related courses. FYI: In a 2007 survey of 100 massage patients, 23% reported unexpected benefits that had nothing to do with the aches or pains they’d wanted to treat.

Craniosacral Therapy Though some massage therapists are schooled in craniosacral therapy, it is recognized as a different field of therapy. Gentle and non-invasive, craniosacral is a hands-on healing modality that focuses on the craniosacral system which are made up of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. The practitioner makes light contact, tapping on key points to get rid of restrictions in this system to improve the functioning of the central nervous system.

Frequently Asked Questions: Is massage therapy safe for everyone? Massage therapy is appropriate for individuals of all ages, including infants, children, and the elderly. Is massage therapy a regulated health profession? Yes. Different states may have differing requirement for licensure, but all require supervised hours in addition to required classes. It is worth mentioning that some massage therapists treat a variety of diseases and disorders while others concentrate on specific conditions. It would be in your best interest to find a massage therapist who specializes in working with your condition. Are there any reported negative fallouts of massage therapy? Massage therapy is one of the safest, non-invasive therapeutic modalities. Though it may cause slight discomfort, it isnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t harmful. Refinancing by Ann Zeilingold What is a refinance loan? Can someone refinance if he doesn’t have a mortgage currently? What is the difference between a HELOC and a refinance loan? A refinance is a mortgage that one obtains on a property that he currently owns. It differs from a purchase mortgage only in the fact that the borrowers already own the home, so therefore it is not a purchase. Even if one is taking a mortgage loan on a property that he owns that has no mortgage currently, it is still called a refinance loan. A HELOC is a Home Equity Line Of Credit. This is a loan that is designed to be in 2nd-lien position, which means that there is a “first mortgage” on the property, in 1st-lien position, and now a second loan, or a “junior” lien is on the property. This second mortgage can be a self-liquidating mortgage, usually called a “second mortgage” or a HELOC. The HELOC is unique because it is a line of credit where your home is the collateral. This means that you can borrow and pay back at will up to the line amount and your borrowing limit is the line amount. For example, if one has a $100,000 HELOC, and he wants to fix his roof, he may just borrow $10,000. They only have to make payments on a $10,000 balance. If then they receive a bonus from work, and they pay it off, and they have no balance anymore, then they don’t have to make any monthly payments. You only pay on what you borrow. It is a good idea to have a home equity line of credit available in case of an emergency; it is not a good idea to have a HELOC for long-term debt. The HELOC does not have a fixed interest rate. The payback is generally interest only for the first 10 years and then it turns into a principal and interest loan for the remain-

ing 20 years. Because the interest rate is NOT fixed, it can go up, and in the future the payments can be crippling. Some HELOC’s actually balloon, which means that after a specific amount of years, the whole mortgage is due in full. David S. is such a person. His HELOC for $140,000 was his only mortgage. The rate was low for the past years. In June of 2015, it ended. He was supposed to pay it back in full. He called the company to extend the term, and they offered him a 5.75% fixed rate (second mortgages have higher rates). He didn’t accept it, because his HELOC was at 3.25%. He continued to make payments and the lender has accepted his payments. Unfortunately, now that he wants to refinance, he can’t because the HELOC is reporting him late, for 12 months in a row since the loan is officially “over.” Since today’s rates are so low — 15-year rates are below 3% in most cases, and 30-year loans are below 4% in most cases — refinancing your HELOC to a new 1st mortgage may be a good idea if you have a

And if you have a mortgage, no HELOC, but your rates are over 4%, it may make sense to refinance to a lower rate today. A mortgage refinance has the same qualifications as a purchase mortgage, except there is no verifying of down payment funds, since you own the home. In order to see if one is a good candidate for a refinance, a review of the current mortgage statement and balance is required and then an analysis can be done to see if it makes sense to refinance. There are costs that need to be

accounted for and a careful review of short term vs long term savings. A mortgage refinance can save you money monthly, even thousands of dollars over time, and can facilitate the funds needed for repairs or to pay back debt. A mortgage refinance is not good for everyone. Whether a refinance or a HELOC or no new loan at all — as a homeowner it is important to keep yourself informed of what is available for you today.
