PESACH NOODLES AND BISHUL

The Q & A column by Rebbetzin Weissmandl is wonderful! I’m thankful for the increased awareness and new insight I gain each week from it. I would like to point out one pertinent application of “maseh bishul”: Rebbetzin Weissmandl writes that it is assur to cook something that was previously baked/roasted/fried. In Sefer Tal Bracha, I read that if Pesach falls on Shabbos, one may not put Pesach egg-noodles into hot soup, since the fried noodles will now cook in the soup, and the malacha of bishul will ensue. There are ways to get around this prohibition: one can either put the noodles into the soup before Shabbos, cook it in a little broth before Shabbos, or add it to the soup only once it is no longer yad soldes bo. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum. Her Parsha column leaves me uplifted and inspired every week. K.L.

You recently wrote that it is assur to read advertisements on Shabbos. I would like to find out if there’s anything wrong with reading an advertisement that has no real interest to me. For example, if I read an advertisement for a store that is not in my area which I will most probably never shop at, or for a vacation that I will never take etc. Is there anything wrong with glancing at that advertisement on Shabbos? Rebbetzin Weissmandl responds: Even if it is not pertinent for you, an advertisement is considered business and it should not be read on Shabbos.

BABYSITTING AND MOLID

I find your weekly Hilchos Shabbos column so informative and it has, Baruch Hashem, brought my shmiras Shabbos up a level. In regards to the halachas of molid in your past issue, what can I do if I babysit a newborn whose mother brings frozen milk; is there any way I am allowed to use it on Shabbos?

Deal of a Lifetime Pink Slip!

Part 1

“And so, we are forced to let you go,” said my boss of nearly 8 years. My heart sank. Visions of my family in 6 months’ time fli ed through my mind. Hungry eyes. Torn shoes. A cold dark apartment. Will that be our fate? My boss was apologetic. Very much so. But as he explained, the company wasn’t doing well and he could no longer afford to pay me. I now had seven li le mouths to feed, and no income. The unknown scared me. My wife, on the other hand, saw no reason to worry. “We will inform our trusty partners at Kollel Chatzos of our predicament and have them daven on our behalf. I’m sure that in the zechus of Torah and Tefillah at Chatzos, Hashem will send you an even be er job.” What happened to the 7 young children? Did they have to endure the hunger and shame their father envisioned?

DECK MAKEOVER

Thank you for motivating my children to clean up. My six- and four-year old did a fantastic job cleaning up and organizing our porch, and my six-year-old makes sure to keep it up. He keeps saying, “The Monsey View said that it has to stay clean!” Thank you for a wonderful project! Family F. Editor’s Note: Enclosed in Family F.’s envelope was our first “Before and After” picture submission. See the details for Phase 2 of our Cleanup Contest in this week’s issue.

SUMMER WITHOUT THE MONSEY VIEW?

I really enjoy The Monsey View and gain a lot from the many interesting articles and exciting programs. I’m really grateful for the cleaning contest; I hope we will see great results together. Also, I want to thank Rebbetzin Weissmandl for the Hilchos Shabbos question/answer each week, especially this past week’s, about whether mail is allowed to be placed in the mailbox, since I always had the same question. My favorite column is FYI, but this week’s was something special. I was fascinated by American English vs. British English. I would like to ask Mrs. Esty Weiss, CHC, if she can give tips on how not to gain weight in camp, when we have boxes filled with nosh, eat oily food, and have no time for regular exercise. And how could I forget? The new fun pages! I had a blast doing them. I look forward to “Mercredi” (as I learned that Wednesday is called in French), each week, because that’s when The Monsey View is available at the grocery. I just hope I won’t have to miss it the next few weeks. Let me explain… I’m heading off to camp IY”H. I’m really excited, but our camp doesn’t receive The Monsey View each week, and I have no way of getting it. So, I would like to ask if you can please mail me The Monsey View to camp each week. Thanks in advance, A Tenth Grade Fan Dear Tenth Grade Fan: Don’t forget to fill your nosh box with healthy foods to munch on, to sleep regularly and not eat at night, and take advantage of the many exercise opportunities presented in camp, like swimming, sports, and being on the go all day! We are sure you will have such a great camp experience and probably not have much time to read, so we will be keeping back issues in our office. Feel free to come by after camp to pick up all the issues you missed.

Your Voice MRSA AND YOUR PART IN PREVENTING IT FROM SPREADING

This letter is addressed to all parents and caregivers who are concerned with the welfare of their own children and the children in their care. At this point, I am almost sure that everyone has heard about the staph infection called MRSA, and knows at least one person who has been affected by it. If you see your child has a pus-pimple, surrounded by a red area, and it is hard to the touch and painful, it is possible and probable that your child has a MRSA staph infection. Unfortunately, the MRSA infection is highly contagious. The swimming pool is one area that has been shown to spread this infection significantly. Since we are now in the summer season, when the children are swimming and bathing together, we turn to you, the public, to help take care of our precious children and avoid unnecessary suffering from MRSA (or any other infectious virus that you may be aware that your child has). You would not want my child with a MRSA swimming in a pool with your child and vice versa‌ So please, let us work together — parents, day camp staff etc. If, chalilah, you notice a MRSA pimple on your child, or you know for a fact that your child has MRSA, please do not allow that child to go swimming. If your day camp has a policy that every child must go into the pool, please send a note with your child that he/she cannot go swimming. DAY CAMPS: Please enforce the policy that any child with a MRSA will not be allowed into the pool. Please notify your parents of this policy and asked to be notified if a MRSA pimple is found on any child so that you are aware of the problem and the necessary measures can be taken to avoid spreading. We all want the best for our children. We should only hear

PROPER PROTOCOL FOR JOB SEEKERS

As someone who does the hiring in a school, I’d like to make you aware of a pet peeve of mine (and many of my colleagues). Starting from before Pesach, we start receiving applications and resumes from many talented individuals seeking a job in our school. Allow me to point out what we believe is the proper protocol following the submission of an application: 1. In order for us to see that you have a real interest in our school, it is best for the applicant to call and follow up. If there is no answer, she should leave a message. (Please note that we do not purposely ignore phone calls — there are many we do answer if you’re lucky enough to catch us at our desks during a free moment.) 2. If you reread point #1, you will notice that it says that “the applicant” should call to follow up. Not her mother! (Or her aunt, sister-in-law, cousin, grandmother, friend, or neighbor.) When we get a phone call from a mother speaking on behalf of her daughter, it is counterproductive, and let me explain why: As principals, we are looking for mature, confident, and responsible young adults to fill our staff. If your daughter is old enough to get a job, she is old enough to make a phone call for it on her own. When an applicant herself calls, it gives us a feeling of what type of person she is — just from her language and tone. I understand that a mother may be more assertive, more articulate, and less intimidated to call. However, as a principal I can tell you that when a mother calls, I get turned off. Mothers — we ask you — please empower your daughters and teach them how to be their own voice from when they’re young. They’ll thank you for it later on.

I returned home one summer day bitterly disappointed. I had expected a friend to do something for me, but she had let me down. App roaching my home, I noticed a bag han ging from the doorknob, full of homemade cookies from my good friend’s sister who m I was friendly with. When I called to thank her, she told me her daughter was the one who had thought to do it. This girl wen t to a backyard daycamp two doors down from me. She asked her mother if she could bring me some of the cookies they had baked. Her mother was happy to comply. Bag of cookies in hand, I went into my house and saw that I had a message on my voi cemail from a friend who lives in Boro Park, whom I hadn’t spoken with in a while. She is someone that knows how to make a person feel like a million bucks. The n, a little later, a friend from way bac k, who lives in San Diego, called. Due to the three-hour difference and her hectic schedule, we barely speak. I had called a month and a half before and she said she would call me back. Now she was returning my call. I felt like Hashem sent all this on the day I needed it the most to help soothe my pain.

SEEKING ADVICE

I would love to hear advice from mothers how they handle the following: At this time of the year, our children go on trips very often, and the fact makes me very happy. The only problem I face, is that they think that part of every trip is a pre-trip to the grocery to buy food for the trip, which costs a lot. I want to know what kind of food, nosh etc. is okay to allow them to buy, and how much is a reasonable amount to spend. Thank you, A Mother

Becoming

WeighSmarter With the topic of eating enough protein comes a great deal of confusion. How much protein is enough? First, want to focus on why protein is so important. Then I will give you information about what is ideal. Protein keeps you satiated and is extremely important when it comes to losing weight and body fat. (Remember that reversing leptin resistance is synonymous with losing weight, because protein makes you feel full and satisfies your hunger, and it will automatically help you reduce your overall caloric intake.) As you probably know by now, I’m not a fan of low-calorie diets for many reasons, but the truth is that there will be a significant difference in weight loss if you consume only 1,900 hundred calories versus 2,700.

By Esty Weiss

The Last Step Toward Balancing Leptin Levels As w e approach the last step toward revers ing and balancing our leptin levels, I woul d like to offer a recap of the issues we have discussed thus far. Since leptin is the hormone that controls our appetite and hunger, we want it to work at an optimal level. You want your body to be sensitive to leptin so t hat it can give your brain the right signals regarding when you’re truly hungry and when you’re satiated. It’s important to realize that if you have extra body fat, you are likely suffering from leptin resistance, which means that the connection to your brain that trig gers your body’s ability to make enough lept in is missing. In short, leptin resistance mean s that your brain doesn’t receive the message that it’s full. So, the five critical fact ors in repairing your leptin levels are as follows: 1. Sleep six to eight hours per night (for most people). 2. Stop eating two to three hours before you go to sleep. 3. Eat smaller meals more often. 4. Reduce your total carbohydrate intake. 5. Eat enough protein.

Protein keeps you satiated and is extremely important when it comes to losing weight and body fat.

It curbs the highs and lows you experience after consuming certain carbohydrates. I’m not sure about you, but for most people I know, if they eat too much sugar in one sitting, they will get a sugar rush, which lasts for a very short duration of time. At the end of the sugar rush, people will crash, at which point they’ll go looking for foods with more sugar and carbs. When you pair proteinrich foods like chicken, fish, meat, or eggs with some carbs like cooked veggies, berries, and small

amount of starches, your body will absorb the sugar from your stomach into your bloodstream more slowly (remember that carbs always turn into sugar), which will help keep your blood sugar from skyrocketing and ward off future crashes and cravings. It fuels fat burning in the body. It may be surprising, but your body cannot effectively burn and use fat as energy (which will result in your dropping weight) if it doesn’t have help from either carbohydrates or protein. As you are losing weight, your body can lose fat, and at times, muscle too (which you don’t want to happen); during this process, it’s especially important that you eat enough protein so that it will fuel fatburning while preserving calorie-burning lean muscle. Muscle burns calories even while you rest, so you want to keep every ounce of muscle you have, and even increase your muscle mass. Protein requires more of your energy due to the “thermic effect of food” (TEF). TEF is energy the body uses to digest small absorbable components. Protein has the “highest” TEF compared to carbs and fat, which means that you burn more calories digesting protein

than you do digesting carbs and fat. Protein promotes muscle repair and growth, so make sure to increase your protein intake after working out. Having some form of protein right after you exercise is highly recommended, since your muscles will be more sensitive to nutrients that the body can use to repair and grow. I suggest having some form of protein with every meal. The best forms of protein are fish, chicken, meat, and eggs. Since these are pure proteins that don’t have any carbs, they have a great fatburning effect. And while I feel it’s necessary to consume protein at every meal, I can’t stress the importance of eating protein for breakfast enough, especially if you’re trying to reverse leptin resistance. Some people have a hard time eating protein in the morning and find it helpful to drink hot tea or lemon water first. How much protein do I need? That’s a million-dollar question that so many of you would like to know the answer to. The good part is that even when you begin your weight-loss journey and consume more protein than you would normally eat, it’s usually for a very short time. Once your body gets into

fat-burning mode, your appetite and hunger will decrease, and you will automatically eat less protein. For those of you who exercise vigorously (and I hope you all do), you can have up to a pound of your body weight in grams of protein each day. Say you weigh 180 pounds; then you can have 180 grams of protein throughout the day. For those of you who are only walking or are not doing exercise yet, you can eat half of that amount. If you weigh 180 pounds, you can have 90 grams of protein throughout the day. I personally believe that you don’t need to be obsessed with the amounts of protein you’re eating, as long as you eat to satisfy yourself (without feeling stuffed). As I stated before, your appetite and leptin levels will start working better automatically, and you will start to eat the amount of protein your body needs. Stay tuned for next week’s article on the relationships between your health, weight, and sugar.

Ignite: Lighting up the World, One Heart at a Time Talking with Mrs. Suri Jaroslawitz, the founder of Ignite, is like drinking a tall glass of cold water on a hot day. She’s refreshing, vivacious and passionate about what she does. The hour we spent together was energizing and inspiring and quite frankly, made me want to sign up for her workshop!

How would you describe Ignite? I like to think of it as an emotional gym. The practical tools I teach over the five weeks enable a person to tap into their innate ability and exercise their inner strength. Everyone is searching for peace of mind and heart. With the right skills and practice, we can all attain a deep understanding of our core values and the self-empowerment to find purpose and cope with everyday relationships and challenges. That’s the purpose of Ignite. My goal is to ignite a spark of positive energy within each participant which will then spread to everyone surrounding them. We all have the inner resources to navigate the hills and valleys of life. It’s just a matter of uncovering those resources and flexing our emotional muscles; like getting on a treadmill and getting better and better at it every day. Think about it – the challenges we face may be very difficult but they make us who we are. When a person’s heart is being monitored, he wants to see the peaks and valleys. The last thing he wants is a flat line! What’s an ocean without waves? Is this something you always wanted to do? Not at all. I started off teaching and absolutely loved it. I taught for years and was about to become a principal when my husband asked for my help with his very demanding and busy business. So I went from loving the classroom to working in

a business for the past two decades; which of course is a whole different world. Although I was doing very important tasks, since I’m naturally a people person, I found myself connecting with my clientele and interacting with the customers in a very meaningful way When I saw an ad for a coaching class, it spoke to me. I was really just looking to enhance my own personal human experience. And I figured it would be a perfect way to get more knowledgeable about the problems and challenges people were sharing with me. While I was taking the course I was the happiest person. I couldn’t wait for Sundays and immersed myself in the practicum. The more I learned, the more I wanted to learn. I gained a tremendous amount of knowledge. When I was done, I figured the best way to hone my new skills would be to use them. I contacted a volunteer coaching organization and offered my time. Though it was completely not my intention, one thing led to another and I found myself accepting clients, speaking in high schools and acting as a guest lecturer for the Sara Schenierer’s social work course. Chasdei Hashem, my various efforts have been successful and I was repeatedly asked to start providing workshops for the general public. And here we are. I have no doubt that people reading this will be interested to know more about Ignite. Can you share the details of the upcoming workshop?

This summer, I’ll be offering the workshop in Monsey and Monroe. The Monsey, five-week program will start on Tuesday, July 26 iyH. Every week, participants will come together for two hours. I prefer immersion training; the energy generated in a room with no distractions cannot compare to a phone session. The two hours are filled with practical, hands-on tools and skills; a combination of the most impactful lessons I’ve learned over the years. Everyone receives a very comprehensive packet with notes and handouts; I want participants very present so there is very little note taking. Everything is very real-world oriented and usable. For example, I’ll hand out a list of 120 core values and have students find a minimum of three that apply to them. Anyone from age 20 can join. By the time you have completed the workshop, you will, BS” D exemplify the Ignite logo: a heart lit up by your inner spark with the ability to change the world. For more information, please call 718-807-5405 or email ignitewithsuri@gmail.com The workshop exemplifies Suri who is an incredibly warmhearted person. She focuses on practical solutions with a perfect balance of both sympathy and empathy. The name Ignite is a perfect description of both her and the workshop. Mrs. Shaindel Ausch, Life Coach

Parshas Chukas By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum Sossover Rebbitzin

Ahhh, summer vacation at last. Eli and Reuven had taken their families to New Hampshire for two weeks. After settling their families, Eli and Reuven decided to hike to the peak of Mount Washington. The park ranger at the base station agreed that the Jewell Trail would be suitable for these two novice climbers. After ensuring that they had packed food, water, and appropriate clothing for the drastic changes in temperature that make Mount Washington famously dangerous to climb, the ranger warned them strictly not to veer off the trail under any circumstance, and sent them on their way. Eli and Reuven wanted to reach the peak, but they had a second agenda. They had heard of a rare alpine flower called the Robbins’ cinquefoil, which grows only in the small region around Mount Washington called Franconia Notch. Not realizing that the flower grows only at the peak, they decided to search the woods as they climbed, hoping to take a picture of the rare yellow flower. At one point along their hike, Eli and Reuven spotted what appeared to be a yellow flower growing deep in the woods. After some debate, they decided to go investigate, even though doing so would take them off the trail. They reasoned that they would

44 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W

keep the trail in sight and thus, not get lost. What they did not realize, however, was that reaching the flower they had seen would entail climbing down a small ravine, taking their original trail out of view. Just temporarily, they assured themselves.

Even if we have ventured far from our original path, we can still reach the same destination from any place where we find ourselves. Well, it wasn’t long before the two were completely lost. After two hours of panicked searching, they eventually found a different trail, and encountered another hiker who was on his way down. They asked him where they were, and he told them that they were on the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail, a far more challenging trail up Mount Washington than the Jewell Trail they had left behind. They asked him how to return to the Jewell Trail, and the hiker laughed. He said that to try to go back through the woods and find a different trail would be foolish and dangerous. If they had wanted to take the Jewell Trail, he chastised them, they should not have left it in the

first place. Eli and Reuven were seized with regret. What had they done? Why had they acted so foolishly – and for what, a flower? Seeing the looks of distress on the two men’s faces, the hiker was quick to reassure them: they could still reach the summit of the mountain, but it would not be so easy. While they could not return to the easier Jewell Trail, they could follow the more difficult Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail and still reach the same exact destination at the end. In this week’s parsha, the Be’erah Shel Miriam stopped giving forth water when Miriam Ha’neviah was niftar. After the Bnei Yisroel complained of thirst, Hashem commanded Moshe Rabbeinu and Aharon HaKohen to take the staff, gather Klal Yisroel together, and speak to the rock that it should give forth water. Moshe struck the rock with the staff twice, and water came out. Hashem then informed Moshe and Aharon that because they had failed to sanctify His name to the B’nei Yisroel, they would not live to lead Klal Yisroel into Eretz Yisroel. Rashi explains that Moshe’s mistake was that he struck the rock instead of speaking to it. He cites a Midrash that if Moshe had spoken to the rock and the rock would have then brought forth water, the people who witnessed the mir-

acle would have inferred a powerful lesson: If a rock which cannot speak or hear, and does not require any sustenance, fulfills the word of Hashem, then surely they should do the same. (Rashi on Bamidbar 20:12) After Hashem informed Moshe and Aharon that they would not live because they had failed to sanctify His name, the very next pasuk states: “Heimah mei merivah… – These are the waters of strife where the Bnei Yisroel contended with Hashem, and He was sanctified through them.” Through whom was Hashem sanctified? Rashi explains: through Moshe and Aharon. This seems a bit confusing. First the Torah tells us that Hashem punished Moshe and Aharon because they did not sanctify Him, and then the very next pasuk tells us that Hashem was sanctified through them. Rashi clarifies: “When Hashem renders judgment on His holy ones, He is feared and sanctified by mankind.” Moshe and Aharon had been given a job to do: to make a public Kiddush Hashem. Had Moshe spoken to the rock, they would have accomplished their job – the “easy” trail to the mountain peak. However, Moshe made a mistake and struck the rock instead, thereby failing to bring about the desired Kiddush Hashem. So Hashem brought about the Kiddush Hashem by punishing them – the “challenging” trail to the mountain peak. Either way, they accomplished the job they were given. Hashem has plans for this world, plans for Klal Yisroel, and plans for each and every one of us. We can make terrible mistakes in life, chalilah, but we cannot derail Hashem’s plans for us or for the world. Feeling regret over mistakes we have made is an integral part of the teshuvah process, but when taken too far can hold us back. The yetzer hara can cause us to become paralyzed with regret, unable to forgive ourselves and move on. The reality is that even if we have ventured far from our original path, we can still reach the same destination from any place where we find ourselves. We just have to be willing to get up and start again from where we are now. Our new path may be more difficult, but we will reach our destination in the end. All paths lead to the top.

Q&A

One Halachah at a Time By Rebbetzin Y. Weissmandl

Q1: is one permitted to use air freshener to eliminate an unpleasant odor on Shabbos? A: It is muttar. Q2: Is one permitted to use deodorant on Shabbos? A: It is muttar to use unscented spray or roll-on deodorant (but not bar deodorant). There are two halachic issues involved in this shaila. 1. Zoreh (‫)זורה‬: scattering any substances or liquids 2. Molid (‫)מוליד ריח בבגדים‬: generating a smell in clothing Zoreh Based upon the Ramah, the act of indiscriminately scattering a substance or liquid (even if the components of the substance are not being separated from each other), falls under the melacha of zoreh (winnowing). Aerosol spray dispensers (such as hair-sprays, deodorants, and room-air fresheners) operate by the use of a propellant that is inside the container together with the liquid spray product which is under pressure. Pushing the button on the valve releases pressure, forcing the liquid product through the valve. The liquid turns into a spray-liquid that is scattered and is commonly referred to as mist. There are some poskim who are of the opinion that spraying aerosol devices on Shabbos would therefore be considered an act of zoreh. Nevertheless, other leading poskim ruled that because the scattering is not caused by a human blowing or the force of natural winds, but rather by the pressure that exists within the aerosol dispenser itself, it is not considered zoreh, and is therefore l’chatchila permitted to be used on Shabbos.

Molid It is assur to apply a pleasing scent onto one’s garments or any other fabrics. According to Chazal, this new scent would add a new attribute to the fabric, and is thus considered molid (creating a new substance). However, it is muttar to apply new fragrances to one’s body. Some poskim hold that applying scent to one’s hair falls under the category of applying scent to one’s clothing, because the scent remains on the hair the way it remains on a garment, and is therefore assur. • When there is a need for (‫כבוד‬ ‫ )הבריות‬on Shabbos (for example, an unpleasant odor), one may use spray air fresheners, ensuring that one does not spray directly onto fabrics, such as towels etc. • It is assur to put potpourri onto one’s linen or towels on Shabbos to generate a pleasant smell. • According to the poskim, applying fragrance to any part of the body that will come into contact with one’s clothes is molid and is assur. Therefore one should use only unscented deodorant spray or roll-on. (Stick [bar] deodorant is assur.) • It is muttar to apply pleasant fragrances to any part of one’s body that does not come in direct contact with one’s clothes.

EXCLUSIVE CLUB CELEBRATES MAJOR MILESTONE

What began as a typical Sunday afternoon quickly morphed into an eventful day of action for more than five hundred children as they converged on Sweet Expressions and Toys 4 U to collect their just rewards for participating in The Monsey View Cleanup Initiative. For two weeks, these children engaged in daily outdoor cleanup action, helping to preserve their personal properties and the beautiful Monsey surroundings. As a side benefit, these kids learned that hard work comes with reward. With mounting anticipation, the children scooped up wrappers, parked bikes, and swept porches — dreaming of standing in line to receive their hard earned treats. This past Sunday, reward time finally arrived. Energy was felt buzzing through the air as children waited in line to collect their ice cream and choose a free toy from Toys 4 U. Background music added extra fun to Mega Reward Sunday #1, and children excitedly shared with their peers how hard they’d been working; proud smiles inching across their little faces. “It’s a fantastic program,” one mother was overheard saying. “It really inspired the kids to care about their surroundings. These are the children that will grow up to maintain their homes and property in the proper manner.” Amidst the busy scene of prize collection, children were seen reminding each other to not drop packaging on the floor, and gently prodding younger children to throw ice cream remains in the nearby receptacle bins. All around the children, posters with slogans like, “Stash it or Trash It,” “Be the Solution for Dirt and Pollution,” and “We Pick Up Litter and Pack Away Clutter!” plastered the walls, proudly proclaiming each child a member of The Monsey View Cleanup Club. More than just a program for beautifying our surroundings, these kids are learning a lesson for life: to have proper respect for nature and selves by investing the extra effort in proper disposal and cleanliness. There are still more exciting aspects to the Cleanup Initiative that will unfold over the next few weeks, bringing with it more prizes, more good times, and more life lessons. If you haven’t yet joined The Monsey View Cleanup Club, now’s your chance!

World News By Ruchel Lebovits

July 4th week, usually a time of celebration in the United States, ended in unrest and tragedy. Following two separate incidents of police shooting African American men Alton Sterling and Philando Castile, people across the country responded by protesting what they viewed as racism and unnecessary violence towards African Americans by police. The protests were led by a group called Black Lives Matter, which had formed in 2013 after George Zimmerman was acquitted in the shooting death of an African American teenager Trayvon Martin. Over the years, they have organized rallies and protests in the attempt to call attention to what they believe is systematic racism in the American justice system. On Thursday, July 7th, many people gathered in Dallas, Texas in a remarkably peaceful rally with participants chanting slogans such as, “Hands up; don’t shoot,” a common rally cry of Black Lives Matter. As the rally wound down, shots rang out among participants who quickly scattered in panic. It soon became clear that the gunfire was aimed directly at the police officers who were monitoring the protest. After considerable chaos and an hours-long standoff, the numbers came trickling in. In total, five officers were killed, and seven more wounded — the worst loss for any police department in this country since September 11th, 2001. The perpetrator was a lone gunman, 25-year-old Micah Xavier Johnson, a US Army Reservist who had served a tour in Afghanistan. After police searched his home on Friday, they found bomb-making materials, ballistic vests, rifles, ammunition, and a personal journal of combat tactics. Dallas police Chief David Brown reported that during the standoff, Johnson told police negotiators that he was upset about recent police shootings, that he wanted to kill white people — especially white officers — and that he had acted alone. He also said that more officers were going to get hurt, and that bombs were planted all over downtown, although police found no evidence of bombs after sweeping of the area. The standoff ended when Johnson was killed by a

bomb carried aboard a police-controlled robot. Johnson’s attack shook the country, with police departments in many major cities ordering their officers to be more vigilant and only travel in pairs. There was also an outpouring of support for the victims belonging to the Dallas Police Depart-

Many people came to pay their respects to the officers who laid down their lives to protect others. Black Lives Matter released a statement saying Black Lives Matter advocates dignity, justice, and freedom — not murder. But other protest marches continued throughout the country, some even turning violent, in an unrest that has stirred many to action. President Obama cut short a trip to Europe in reaction to these events and said, “Whenever those of us who are concerned about failures of the criminal justice system attack police, you are doing a disservice to the cause.’” And “I want to say to everyone concerned about... racial bias in the criminal justice system that maintaining a truthful, serious, and respectful tone is going to help mobilize American society to bring about real change.” He also said there was legitimate criticism to be made of the criminal justice system and that citizens should continue to protest against it. “I would hope that police organizations are also respectful of the frustrations that people in these communities feel and not just dismiss these protests as political correctness or politics or attacks on police.”

Recap: The building next door to Sara is on fire and Tzipoiry Eiss and her family have not yet emerged from the raging flames. They are trapped — and there is nothing Sara can do to save them.

“They’re out! They’re out!” someone next to her said. Sara didn’t want to look, to pick up her eyes from the prickly shrub, where she had found a space to talk to Hashem, to beg Him, while another person was standing between life in this world and life in the next, to do something, because nobody else could. Someone tapped her gently on the back, then put a comforting hand around her bent waist. “They found them. They brought them out. Tzipoiry is out.” Still, Sara remained there, now limp with relief, the adrenalin leaving her in a sudden whoosh, until she couldn’t so much as move because her body was spent, and the shrub sagged under her pressing weight. She could feel the speaker’s arm go limp around her as well, twitching doubtfully, not sure how to proceed with Sara’s non-communication. She finally turned her head. “Are they—” she was afraid to say it, to ask it, to open herself up to the possibility of the answer. “Is everyone— are they… okay?” “They’re alive.” It was Goldy who was there with Sara. Goldy pulled her hand back from Sara and her arms hung at her sides, her fingers fisted into crunch balls. The poor, young woman, as yet unexposed to her own strength, had faced the most terrifying moment in her life. Sara got up. She didn’t need to further traumatize the girl. “How are you feeling,” Sara asked. Goldy shrugged. “Fine, I guess. I don’t know.” “I’m very shaken up. I’d like to find out about Tzipoiry. This was so scary.” The house was now quieter, the only sounds coming from the hums of fire trucks and the last sprays of water on the final embers. The house was surrounded by a dark, brooding sky and lit up with the lights of emergency vehicles. Hatzolah members milled about, and Sara vaguely noticed Yaakov Kasten. Was Tzipoiry okay? Whatever happened, it had already hap-

pened. Now it was over, now all she could do was know, not do. The house was skeletal, all its walls striped, its kishkes still hanging out, wet, charred, exposed. The damage was intense. “They were waiting on the back porch.” The details wended their way through the throng of onlookers and victims, now families with nowhere to go, their nearest family member living across the George Washington Bridge, their new homes, settled into with love and hope, charred and smoking memories. Sara inched closer to the knot of women. Throughout the end of summer and fall, she had learned not to inch too close to these circles of women talking, because she didn’t like it, hated the discussion, the focus on other people, the competitive nature with which information was bandied about. She wasn’t used to it, but she understood

She saw there was no way down the building’s regular steps. And her porch has no steps. She probably figured that if the fire got too close, she could jump. Otherwise, why should she take the risk?” “She has the basement stairs going down right below her porch.” Malka Gitty added, to highlight Tzipoiry’s dilemma. “Concrete steps,” Sara added, covering her mouth in horror. “So what happened?” “They’re on their way to the hospital, for broken bones and smoke inhalation.” “How did the fire start?” Sara needed to know. She looked at the house, at how the fire had traveled swiftly, building up, crawling down, jumping fences… Her house! In all this time, worrying and almost dying from her handicap, her inability to save, to protect, she hadn’t even looked at her own house. The side was completely charred. The firefighters, still at work, were flooding her home’s insides with their thick, snaking pipes of water. She needed to see. She started for her front yard, but it, too, was cordoned off by yellow plastic tape. From the open

front door, she could see smoke still breathing, and water running off, like from a sink, down her inside stairs. Again, she had to hug her arms to keep from doing something, but she knew now that it was all out of her control. There was nothing she could do, not to save Tzipoiry, not to save herself. And doing nothing, letting Hashem do His work — hadn’t He shown her that His plans are better laid than her own? Had she followed her instincts, she would have run straight into the flames at the front, to save people who weren’t even there, who were waiting in the back, for help. Sara sighed, defeated. She felt eerily calm. Where would she go? What would her house be like? Would it be livable? She didn’t know. Neither did these people, all of her neighbors who had just started a new life here in Monsey, who had just recently finished settling in, hanging that last picture and adding that last wicker towel basket to the linen closet. And here they were. All of them, stripped of the roofs from over their head. She gravitated toward them again. “It started in Tzipoiry’s dryer,” Malka Gitty was saying. “Poor ventilation,

Hadn’t she just seen how precious life is, how wonderful and miraculous is each person, defects and all? they say the machine wasn’t properly attached.” A flicker of annoyance threatened to blaze up again inside of Sara but she quickly doused it. Hadn’t she just seen how precious life is, how wonderful and miraculous is each person, defects and all? When Tzipoiry’s life was not a given, hadn’t Sara thought of nothing but how loved, how alive, how important Tzipoiry was? “So… where do we go from here?” Sara gestured to the house, which was no more. The building was uninhabitable. This would take forever to fix, as long as it had taken to build. Where would they all go? “My parents have a summer home here in Airmont,” Malka Gitty said quietly. “My husband’s friend has a mansion in this area. Since we’re a small family, he said we can also offer it to a second, larger family. Would you like to join us there?” Goldy asked Sara. Sara looked at Goldy. She wanted to share a house with her? She had never known this Goldy, having based her assumptions on the woman’s quiet, reserved attitude. She

had thought of her as a snob. Not as someone who would invite her to share living space. Did she want to share a house with Goldy? It seemed off, two families sharing space, but then, she hadn’t even seen the house, and Goldy had called it a mansion, so perhaps privacy was possible, and she couldn’t go to her mother now, and she had nowhere else to go, so… “I’ll take a look. I mean, for tonight I’ll take anything. But this is not a one-night thing, this house will take months to rebuild.” She needed to reach Elimelech. She needed to tell him they had somewhere to sleep, for tonight at least. To tell him everyone was all right. Where was he? To be continued...

Recipes and Food Styling by: Leah Stern

Summer 2016 has arrived in its full glory. Temperatures are escalating, and the kids’ unanimous method of cooling off is by devouring ices, of course! Truthfully, they do deserve this delicious, refreshing treat, but what are you stocking your freezer with? Corn syrup, food coloring, and chemicals, or are you tempting them with an array of nature’s colors and flavors? If I ever thought I was doing my kids a disservice by

denying unlimited amount of freeze pops, the creation of this column has proven otherwise. Despite the junk on my freezer shelves, I literally had to hide and camouflage these ices until the photoshoot, and once the pictures were taken, the partying began! T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

Fruit Pops These take a bit of time to prepare, but are worth the effort. The white grape juice macerates the fruit, softening and bringing out their luscious flavors.

20 1½” x 10” Ziploc bags 1 large mango, chopped 3 kiwis, chopped 1-2 large black plums, sliced 2 nectarines, sliced White grape juice

Directions: 1. Chop and slice fruit into thick pieces, and push into bags, allowing some space between one fruit and the other. 2. Pour in white grape juice, leaving a half inch space at the top. 3. Seal and place in freezer upright, in a 32-oz plastic container.

Ziploc bags in various sizes for ices, are available at Craft It. Seasoned Chef: When serving to children, open the ices by cutting right under the zipper.

1-oz disposable whiskey cups (The soft Dart cups are the easiest to push out when frozen.) Lollipop sticks 8 oz. strawberry yogurt (blended variety) 8 oz. vanilla yogurt

Directions: 1. Using a tablespoon, put strawberry yogurt into whiskey cups. 2. Layer a tablespoon of vanilla yogurt over strawberry yogurt. 3. Freeze for about 1½ hours. 4. Place lollipop sticks in an upright position into semi-frozen yogurt. You can do this prior to freezing, but the sticks will be slanted.

Mini YoYo pops Sweet, cute, and simple to prepare.

Peach Swirl Cups 4 oz. Dart containers with covers (can be purchased in most grocery stores.) 1 28-oz can of peaches in light syrup ž cup confectioners sugar 2 oz. oil 2 T. lemon juice 1 T. vanilla sugar

This is our family’s version of italian ices.

Directions: 1. Blend all ingredients. Place 2.5 oz. into each cup. 2. Add 1 oz. vanilla yogurt in the center. Swirl with a toothpick. 3. Cover and freeze.

16-oz. container vanilla yogurt

Seasoned Chef: For parve version, omit vanilla yogurt. To achieve marblized effect make the version featured on the cover , put the vanilla yogurt into ice pop molds, letting it drip down the sides and then put the peach.

Chocolate Banana Pops Hey, why didn’t I think of that?

Bananas 2 squares baking chocolate Mini chocolate chips

Directions: 1. Peel bananas, cut in half, and insert a popsicle stick into the cut side. 2. Lay out on a pan lined with silver foil. 3. Place baking chocolate into a sandwich bag or ziplock bag, sealing well. 4. Immerse in boiling water. When melted, cut a tiny hole in one corner of the bag. 5. Drizzle chocolate over bananas and distribute chocolate chips over melted chocolate while it is still warm. 6. Freeze.

Seasoned Chef: Be creative. Try different chocolates and a variety of toppings.

More Frozen Treat Ideas: Great ways to use up your overripe fruits: Blend a variety of fruit with some orange juice, using a hand blender. Sweeten if desired and freeze.

Layer different colored pureed fruit to make natural tri-colored ices.

Ziplock bags come in a variety of sizes. Freeze different juices, iced tea, or lemonade in them for a healthier freeze pop. Use organic sugar for a healthier freezepop variety.

For kids that can’t seem to have enough ices, freeze plain water in little cups to help them cool off.

Do you enjoy cracking your ice? Freeze flavored seltzer in mini cups or ice cube trays. The fizz in the seltzer forms air bubbles, and the ice will not freeze as a solid, making it chewable.

Expecting a crowd and don’t have enough ice pop molds? Pop ices out of containers, place in plastic bags, containers, or bowls, and reuse the molds.

Try a frozen fruit kabob. Thread a variety of fruit chunks onto skewers and freeze.

Election Process

General Election By Ruchel Lebovits

On Tuesday, July 5th, FBI Director James Comey announced that after a month’s-long investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email and server for classified information, he would not recommend criminal charges. Director Comey, though, did rebuke Secretary Clinton for being “extremely careless.” He said her actions were not intentional or willful so they did not warrant arrest, but he did raise questions about her judgment and said it was possible foreign hostile governments had gained access to her account. Following the FBI’s findings, Attorney General Loretta Lynch confirmed that as she had previously stated, she would accept the FBI’s recommendation on whether or not to press charges. With mere weeks left to the Party Conventions, interest in the political campaigns are rising, and an important legal announcement about one of the major party’s candidates is likely to make a difference in voters’ opinions. So what does all this mean for the Clinton’s campaign future? From a legal standpoint, there is nothing holding Secretary Clinton back from running for the position of President of the United States. The more important

There is still a long way and many, many new cycles to go before the election will be decided. But for both major candidates, they are fighting an uphill battle from a position of weakness. question, though, is what difference it will make in the court of public opinion. A public rebuke by the director of the FBI on a person’s handling of classified information should have a strong impact on how people view the person’s trustworthiness and capability in holding a job where keeping classified information is of paramount importance.

So what do the polls say about people’s view of Clinton? In a CBS News poll from last month, done prior to the FBI’s conclusion of its investigation, participants were asked if they felt Clinton did something wrong by setting up a personal server/email account. 26% said they felt nothing was done wrong, 25% said they felt that something improper was done,

and a whopping 41% said they felt it was something illegal! 33% said they feel Hillary Clinton is honest and trustworthy, while 62% said not. Clearly, Hillary Clinton has a major hurdle to overcome in gaining the trust of the American people. So what, ultimately, are her chances of getting elected to the job of President of the United States? That question has as much to do with her opponent as it has with her. If Hillary Clinton were to be running against a person who was unquestionably honest and trustworthy, she would, without a doubt, lose the up-

coming election in November. Why would a nation trust their most critical and influential job with a person who has previously failed in proving herself capable of holding such an office? But while Clinton’s numbers are abysmal, so are Donald Trump’s. In that same CBS Poll Donald Trump was labeled as honest and trustworthy by 32% of people polled, and 63% said, “no”! Worse yet for Trump was that only 30% said Trump is prepared to be president, while 67% said that he is not. Clinton, however, had a positive response from 59% of poll participants, and only 39% said

she is not prepared for presidency. This puts her in a better position to ultimately win this election. There is still a long way and many, many new cycles to go before the election will be decided. But for both major candidates, they are fighting an uphill battle from a position of weakness. They both have negative favorability numbers. Neither of them has the trust or unconditional support of the American people. And with each passing week, it seems less of a choice of whom you’d want in the White House and more of whom you’d want there less.

Staring at the Shadows By Itta Shayowitz It’s midnight and I’m lying in my bed, staring at the shadows dancing on the ceiling. Images of black branches sway back and forth across the ceiling fan, looking like gnarled fingers trying to grasp onto the blades of the fan. I let out a long sigh. Every bone in my body hurts from shlepping boxes all day long from the car, through the garage, and into the dining room. But hey, I’m not complaining. After all, I now actually have a garage to shlep things through. Back in Brooklyn, only the lucky few had garages and there was certainly no such thing as a garage attached to your home! But here I am now, lying in my bed in my new home. My new home with its very own garage! I roll over to face the wall, trying to get those branches out of my line of vision so I can finally get some sleep. Tomorrow’s a big day. I hired a professional organizer to come help me unpack the millions of boxes currently piled up on the dining room floor. Tirtza, my Lakewood sister-in-law, says it’s the newest thing now to hire an organizer. Everyone is doing it. As for me, I’m just happy that I can pay someone to help me unpack.

After all, my mother made it very clear that she wasn’t going to shlep in from Brooklyn just for this, and my mother-in-law is already on babysitting duty. My husband will be off to work in the morning, so the piles and piles of boxes will be all mine to tackle. Or so I thought, before I spoke to Dassi, the professional organizer. I’m actually looking forward to unpacking those boxes with her and finally making this empty house turn into our home. I close my eyes and breathe softly. In through the nose and out through the mouth, just like my yoga instructor, Nechama, taught me. I’m going to miss Nechama so much. Practicing yoga has changed my life and Nechama played a big role in that. I had sent her

a fruit arrangement with a thank you note before I left, expressing my feelings about the many ways yoga has trained me to be a better person. I really wanted to send chocolates, but something about sending chocolate to a yoga instructor just seemed off, so I settled for an edible arrangement. Through yoga, I have become a better, more centered, wife and mother. Even my little Menachem noticed the difference in me since I started practicing yoga. I just hope I find a yoga class here as good as Nechama’s. Ahh, my Menachem. My pride and joy. My little angel, but sometimes also my devil. He has the uncanny ability to go on and off like a light switch. One minute he can be the most perfect little mitzvah boy you ever laid eyes on. The next minute he is literally trying to poke his sister’s eyeballs out. And if I

hadn’t seen it with my own eyes, I would never have believed he was capable of it. Back in Boro Park, Menachem got lots of attention from his various therapists. OT, PT, SEIT — you name it, he got it. Now that we moved to Rockland, he will no longer be receiving his services, and I know this means he will need lots of extra TLC from his Mommy. I daven every day that Hashem should give me the strength to be calm and patient with him, especially over the next few weeks as we settle into our new home and neighborhood. I peek over my shoulder at my husband. He’s out like a light, as they say. As soon as Dovid is horizontal, he is asleep. Whenever I have something important to tell him, I make sure he is standing upright. And sometimes even that doesn’t help! I could literally be halfway through a sentence only to realize that he’s completely fallen asleep while I was talking. I don’t blame him, of course. He works hard to provide for our little family. Buying a house and moving obviously adds a huge financial strain. He never complained about it, but then again how could he?

Suddenly it hits me. This is why I can’t fall asleep! It’s too quiet! After all, moving to Monsey was his idea in the first place. Dovid grew up here and his dream has always been to provide his children with the very same wonderful carefree Monsey childhood that he had. I roll over onto my left side. Why in the world am I having such a hard time falling asleep? Today was exhausting. I should be dreaming now about OXO containers and perfectly organized closets! I listen. All I hear is silence. A cricket, another cricket, and then more silence. Suddenly it hits me. This is why I can’t fall asleep! It’s too quiet! Back in Brooklyn, our home was a few blocks away from a hospital Emergency Room. I had grown accustomed to the sounds of cars and ambulances whizzing by at all hours of the night. And now? Silence. Not even one car! Suddenly, a wave of loneliness sweeps over me. I feel so isolated. My mind begins to wander again. What if something would chas v’shalom happen to us in middle of the night? Who would even know? I scold myself for thinking such unpleasant thoughts. I should be happy now. After all, we have just moved into our first house. What a huge milestone for us! I take another deep breath. In through the mouth, hold for four seconds, then out through the nose. In and out. In and out. And slowly, finally… I drift off into a sweet slumber.

Over 20 years experience Beautiful, newly renovated, spacious facilities

Growing up, the term croc in footwear was synonymous with elegance — a reptile skin on a pair of pumps, or a replicate of that in muted tones on a pair of flats. But today, it’s synonymous with the comfy, the casual, and the — dare I say — ugly pairs of Crocs in bursts of colors.

HOW IT STARTED: Crocs was started by three friends who wanted to create boat shoes that would work well with water. The shoes were shown for the first time in 2002 at a boat show in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. When the fire marshal started yelling that the crowd gathered around the Crocs shoe booth was blocking the aisles, they knew they were onto something big. Hanson, whose brainchild it was, tossed pairs of the colorful clogs at passersby, asking them to slip it on. Despite their protests that they were ugly, he urged them to just try it. They did, and Crocs sold 1,000 pairs in those first three days.

KNOW YOUR LINGO: • Do you wonder what you call just a half a pair, or how you call it when one goes missing? Singular of Crocs is Croc. One Croc and a pair of Crocs. • Crocs got this name, because just like a crocodile, it can be worn on land or in water.

WHAT SETS CROCS APART? • It’s soft, it’s lightweight, it’s odor- and bacteria-resistant, and it is slip-resistant, all thanks to the resin material that it is made of, which Crocs patented as “Croslite,” the secret ingredient that makes Crocs unique. • Crocs feature an orthotic footbed that molds to the foot of the wearer, making them super comfortable. • They have holes and ports for ventilation, which also allow water and sand to drain. • They are super easy to clean, and can even be washed in the washing machine. • Crocs’ footbed circulation nubs stimulate blood flow. • The sole acts as a shock absorber.

FAST FACTS • Over the past 14 years, Crocs has sold more than 300 million pairs of shoes. • Crocs shoes are sold in more than 90 countries – the brand now does business in more than 30 languages. That means you can spot Crocs whether you are walking the streets of New York City, Hong Kong, or London. • The iconic clog-style shoe that Crocs is so well known for still accounts for more than 45% of Crocs footwear sales. • While Crocs doesn’t actually require their employees to wear their shoes, on any given day, about 98% of the office is wearing various styles of Crocs or Ocean Minded shoes.

CROCS GETS EXECUTIVE APPROVAL • Crocs got a lot of heat from people all over the world who detest this ugly look that has become a norm. But our former president was a fan. The U.S. was in an uproar when former President George W. Bush was photographed with a pair of clunky resin clogs in 2011. • He’s not the only White House inhabitant to wear them. First Lady Michelle Obama has been spotted with the sling-back style on many occasions.

GET A PERFECT FIT Crocs shoes should not fit like other shoes; they should fit very loosely. You should have about ¼ to ½ inch of space in front of your toes, behind your heel, and you should be able to stick your finger into the strap when you wear it. Crocs too big? Crocs are easy to shrink. 1. Place Crocs in the dryer on low to medium heat for a few minutes, checking to make sure they’re not getting too hot. Allow to become warm, and put them on to fit the shape of your foot. 2. Alternately, Crocs will shrink when exposed to any high heat, like a hair dryer, in the dishwasher, or under the hot sun. Crocs too small? Quick fix. Wash them (in hot water) to loosen up the material, and immediately wear them. If it is the strap that is too tight, keep tugging the strap gently, being careful not to stretch the rivet hole. The resin Croslite material has memory, and will stay stretched after a few doses of treatment.

ack in 2014, Senator Carlucci said, “Lyme disease has progressed into a national epidemic. It was an understandable statement, given that over 98,500 cases were reported to the New York State Department of Health since Lyme disease became reportable in 1986. This number has doubled in the US since 1991, making Lyme the leading disease transmitted by bug bites, affecting more than 30,000 people in the United States annually (according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which recognizes Lyme disease as the fastest spreading vectorborne disease in the country). The number of new cases has continued to rise each year, as Lyme disease has persistently spread to more communities, with residents of Rockland County even more likely to contract Lyme Disease than residents of other New York counties. In 2014, more than 450 new cases of Lyme disease were reported in New York alone, where Lyme disease is endemic in Suffolk, Nassau, Westchester, Rockland, Putnam, Orange, Ulster, Dutchess, and Albany counties.

SYMPTOMS OF LYME DISEASE

Named for Old Lyme, the town in Connecticut where it was first discovered in 1975, Lyme disease is a bacterial infection occurring when an infected deer-tick bites its host, passing along the bacteria. The disease can manifest through many related problems, including co-infections by other kinds of microorganisms, hormonal dysfunction, immune system dysregulation, and other issues. Typical symptoms can develop within a few days, months, or even years after a tick bite, and include flu-like symptoms without congestion (such as headache, fever, fatigue, neck stiffness, pain or stiffness in muscles or joints, swollen glands, sweats, brain fog, slight fever, and chills), and a characteristic rash usually found to be a slowly-expanding bullseye skin rash, called erythema migrans, which is seen in the early stage of Lyme disease in about one third of cases. The rash can appear anywhere from one day until a month after a tick bite. If spotted, taking a picture of it to show one’s physician can help in a diagnosis. Later symptoms can develop weeks, months, or even years later, if the tick bite is untreated. It can cause the infection to spread, affecting joints, heart, and even the nervous system. Most of the time, Lyme disease can be treated successfully with

a few weeks of antibiotics after a diagnosis based on clinical symptoms and lab tests. Early treatment improves the prognosis. Although there are some seasons when ticks are more active and there is stronger possibility of contracting Lyme disease during those times, tick bites can occur at any time of year. From October to May, beware of adult ticks that are normally the size of a sesame seed, although they can grow to be bigger after feeding. Adult ticks are usually only active during temperatures above 40°. From May to September, the nymphs (immature ticks), which are about the size of a poppy seed, are the problem. Nymphs cause nearly 90% of all Lyme disease cases.

ease. Given that 75% of people with Lyme disease will be cured with 7-28 days of antibiotic use if diagnosed soon after a tick bite, the other 25% of people need to be aware that often, they may need to be their own advocate, as many mainstream doctors simply follow the thirty-day protocol of antibiotics, expecting that the disease is cured, even if one still presents symptoms.

PREVENTING LYME DISEASE

Preventing Lyme disease involves numerous tactics. Tick checks are critical after a trip outside. If one finds a tick, it should be removed quickly and correctly in order to reduce the chances of Lyme. Check the entire body for ticks nightly. Teach older children to check themselves. Examine all areas of the skin by sight, as well as by feel, since ticks can be so small that visual searches miss them. To prevent tick bites, stay in open spaces and on well-maintained trails. Wear long sleeves and tuck pants into socks, and shirts into clothing. Before com-

Awareness is the first method of defense. Being that a summertime flu is rare, flu-like symptoms should immediately make one consider Lyme dis-

Put lavender oil on clothes or lavender scented dryer sheets in pockets or socks. Take 400 mg of astragalus two to three times daily to help prevent the transmission of Lyme disease.

Avoid tall grass, keep property clean of leaves, and prune low-lying bushes to let in sunlight. Rake leaves, as ticks can survive the winter by staying beneath them. When landscaping, make sure plants near the house are not varieties that deer like. Including a three-foot strip of mulch around the yard’s edge creates a barrier ticks are unlikely to cross. Keep woodpiles off the ground and in a sunny area to help prevent mice, the number one carriers of deer ticks, followed by other small mammals. Stone walls should be circumvented as they attract tick-carrying wildlife, and sitting on stone walls should be avoided for this reason. Shaded lawns can help support a tick population. As birds also carry ticks, the ground below bird feeders should be kept clean of spilled food to discourage rodents. The feeder should not be close to the house. A single application of pesticides during the year can help to reduce the nymphal tick numbers in a yard.

REMOVAL OF TICKS

Remove an attached tick correctly and as soon as it is discovered to reduce chances of contracting Lyme disease. Removing the tick with tweezers is

no longer recommended, as by grasping the tick, one is likely to crush or squeeze the tick’s body, making it even more likely that bacteria will be released into the skin. Instead, use a tick remover device or make your own out of a credit card or stiff piece of cardboard with a slit cut into it to slide around the tick’s body. After the tick is removed, disinfect both the area on the skin and the tick remover. Make sure to wash hands as well. Removing ticks by using home remedies, such as petroleum jelly, painting nail polish on them, or using lit cigarettes are not recommended. Time is of the essence, and

Chumi, a young mother of four from Brooklyn, spent the summer in the Catskills a year ago. Within a couple weeks of her arrival, she felt under the weather, but figured she had a virus. When she began to experience aches and pains, she chalked it all up to life in the Catskills, and all the exercise she was getting. What she didn’t understand was why she, a normally happy, upbeat person was suddenly feeling anxious for no reason, as well as tired and unfocused. But it wasn’t until she could barely stand on one leg one morning that she decided to visit a doctor. His diagnosis: Lyme disease. After one month of antibiotics, Chumi was presumed to be all better. . . but she wasn’t. When she described to her city doctor the symptoms that had returned, he told her straight out, “I don’t believe in Lyme disease.” He even suggested she visit a psychologist. That was when Chumi knew she needed help from a doctor who did believe in Lyme disease. After a long course of antibiotics, Chumi finally feels good again. Will her symptoms stay away? Chumi can only hope and continue to monitor her own well-being along with a doctor who actually does believe in Lyme disease. ***** When Estee found the first tick on her son when he was five, she had recently moved to Monsey and knew nothing about Lyme disease. She believed her doctor who said she should only worry if she saw a bullseye rash. Five years later, her son’s behavior was anything but normal. He was depressed, angry, and impulsive, and he was placed on meds for ADD and diagnosed with autism. It wasn’t until her son suffered from strep twelve times in the same year that Estee finally insisted on blood work. The results of the blood work showed irrefutably that Chezky had Lyme disease. Estee took Chezky to a special Lyme disease doctor who is still trying to get the disease under control. After more than six months of antibiotics, Chezky has shown interest in Lego for the first time. He even tried skateboarding and went so far as to tell his mother that although he doesn’t know why, he actually feels happy — the first time since Lyme disease struck. Chezky has a long way to go. His immune system still overreacts from something even as small as splinter. Chezky still has learning issues, but there is hope on the horizon now that Chezky’s disease is finally being addressed.

Removing the tick with tweezers is no longer recommended, as by grasping the tick one is likely to crush or squeeze the tick’s body, making it even more likely that bacteria will be released into the skin. If the tick is identified as a deer tick, it can then be sent to a reference lab for PCR analysis of Lyme disease. If not diagnosed early, left untreated, or treated inadequately, Lyme disease can mimic or cause neurological disorders, Bell’s palsy, digestive disorders, arthritis, chronic viruses, psychiatric conditions, fibromyalgia, ALS, MS, and Parkinson’s disease. Yet, most practitioners of mainstream medicine are decades behind recognizing and addressing Lyme disease as an emerging health crisis, and remain unaware of how to diagnose or treat Lyme disease, believing a 30-day course of antibiotics to always be sufficient. Insurance companies will not cover Lyme disease when listed as a diagnosis and thus doctors have to bill for the symptoms and not the cause.

ADVOCATE FOR YOURSELF

Too many stories of people left undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for years prove the necessity of being one’s own advocate, or the advocate of one’s child when it comes to managing this disease. When in doubt, risks of antibiotic use are minimal compared to the risks of untreated Lyme disease. Seeking out a doctor who specializes in Lyme can also be the key to finding a necessary treatment plan to control the disease. Adjusting to Health Chiropractic Part 2

A conversation with Dr. Aharon Faiman, a beloved Monsey chiropractor, in practice for 26 years: Can you tell us about your initiation into the world of chiropractic?

through a course of adjustments.

When I was in my 20s, I was in a bad accident; I flipped over on a bicycle and crashed my chin into the concrete. I developed terrible pain in my neck and shoulder and had difficulty lifting my left arm. After a year of suffering, someone recommended that I visit a chiropractor. Though I had never heard of chiropractic medicine before, I followed the advice, and was thrilled after the first adjustment took away most of my pain. From that moment on, I wanted to learn the art of adjusting so that I could help people as the chiropractor had helped me.

Have you had any interactions with conventional doctors in your capacity as a chiropractor? What was your experience?

What type of health issues do you deal with in your capacity as a chiropractor?

How does one know what makes for a good chiropractor? Additionally, some chiropractors have gotten bad rap for recommending repetitive lifelong chiropractic treatment. How do consumers know the truth about when it is necessary or if their leg is being pulled?

Most commonly, people come in for aches and pains of all types. This is due to the reputation fostered by opponents of chiropractic who claim that chiropractic is good only for aches and pains. People call me with real issues, when they are in so much pain that they can barely move. Though I generally have tremendous success helping them gain relief, this is not what chiropractic health care is really all about. Chiropractors don’t treat a specific symptom, disease or sickness; chiropractic care is about correcting spinal misalignments to allow the nervous system to flow more freely and heal on its own. I have seen all types of “medical problems” relieved

Unfortunately, there is generally quite a condescending attitude toward chiropractic from the medical world, and we don’t share much interaction. However, many patients have told me that their family doctors have asked them, “Where have you been?” as the frequency of visits decrease due to better health through chiropractic care!

The best way is through personal recommendations and referrals from friends or family. Many chiropractors do a lot of things — nutrition, massage, therapies, supplements, muscle testing — and barely provide chiropractic skills to correct the subluxation! Find a chiropractor whose main work is adjusting patients — the unique service of chiropractors. A good chiropractor educates his patients and delivers excellent adjustments. As for the question on how you know whether you really need to see a chiropractor, the answer is that you will figure it out based on how you feel. Many people find that regular (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly) chiropractic health care is good for themselves and their families. Stress-

Fast Facts: • Annually, doctors of chiropractic (DCs) treat more than 30 million Americans (adults and children). • There are 18 accredited Doctor of Chiropractic programs in the U.S., 2 in Canada, 6 in Australia, and 5 in Europe. • Analysis of a clinical and cost utilization found that based on 70,274 participants, chiropractic care decreased patient costs associated with in-hospital admissions, hospital days, outpatient surgeries and procedures, and pharmaceutical costs. • According to a 2015 Gallup poll of U.S. adults, the perception of chiropractors is generally favorable; twothirds of American adults agree that chiropractors have their patients’ best interest in mind and more than half also agree that most chiropractors are trustworthy. • Satisfaction rates are typically higher for chiropractic care compared to medical care, with a 1998 U.S. survey reporting 83% of respondents satisfied or very satisfied with their care. Good communication seems to be a consistent predictor of patient satisfaction with chiropractors. • Chiropractic is used extensively by professional athletes to prevent and treat injuries as well as achieve optimal health and functioning. • The first state to licensure chiropractors was Kansas, in 1913, and the last was Louisiana, in 1974.

These people see results; their families are healthier. Good nutrition, appropriate rest, proper exercise, being b’smicha, and spinal maintenance on a continuous lifelong basis are five keys to health. Just as changing the oil in the car maintains the car, and regular teeth brushing aids oral health, so too regular adjustments contribute to a healthy person.

Any remarkable story you want to share? Adelso came into my office looking for a medical doctor in my building. He spoke no English, and gestured as if he were falling over sideways, holding out a few pills in his hand. I called a Spanish-speaking friend to translate, and he explained that Adelso has seizures and wanted to refill his medication. I instructed my friend to tell Adelso that I don’t prescribe drugs, and that he should come to me for chiropractic adjustments instead. At his first adjustment, my palpation (hand) examination showed his neck to be extremely subluxated. I felt both sides of his neck where the bones were exerting tremendous pressure on his brain stem and central nervous system. Then, I gave him his first chiropractic adjustment; the most sizeable adjustment I had ever delivered to a patient. A series of loud, sustained sounds of pressure being gently released from his neck was heard. At the same time, my hands felt a significant letting-go of pressure in his upper spine and neck. The extreme spinal bone misalignments in his neck had disturbed the function of his spinal cord, brainstem, and cervical/cranial nerves! Within a month of getting adjusted three times a week, he was off medication and his seizures had stopped. The removal of this pressure lead to an end of the seizures! A TALE OF TWO TICKS It was a beautiful spring day. The music of the chirping birds filled the air as they flew from tree to tree, finding homes amidst the freshly sprouted leaves. A warm breeze swept the branches, from side to side, beckoning to all with a call of liberty. Inside, I sat at my kitchen table with my head resting heavily in my hands. I had to process the gamut of emotions sweeping through me. I was moving back into the past, stopping at a point twenty years ago on a similar spring day, when I was young and impressionable; a tenyear-old child still full of curiosity. I had been casually walking down the block, kicking the loose gravel on the side of the road, watching the pieces roll away. And then I had seen her; a child strapped in a wheelchair. She had straight, black hair cut sharply in the back, with neat bangs trimming her thin face. She had laughed when I told her “hello,” her hands jerking to the side, while saliva slipped from the sides of her mouth. This girl had been pushed by a friendly lady with broad shoulders who loved to converse with whomever she chanced upon. “It’s a bad case of Lyme disease,” she had explained to me. She had smiled kindly, her dimples showing, and her blonde wig slightly bobbed up and down as she spoke. “She was once a girl just like you, until a little tick came by, and no one noticed…” I had felt a pang of pain, then pity for this sweet little girl. A tick… A tick! A bad case of Lyme disease. Those remembered words made my heart beat faster, and my hands clench tightly in fear. The image of the two moving steadily down the road floated away, and I was pulled back into the present. The phone had recently rung, and the number of my girls’ school had shown on the caller ID. My

heart had skipped a beat. There’s something about seeing the schools’ number that makes me apprehensive; this time it had been for good reason. It had been my nursery-aged daughter’s teacher. “Rochel had a tick behind her ear,” she had related with the same warmth and care she always exuberated. Being a beautiful spring day, the teacher had taken the girls out to

The nit-checking ladies were ready for the nursery girls. With her hand raised and a smile on her face, the teacher had called each child patiently by her name. One more turn down the slide, just one more jump off the platform, and slowly the girls had come forward, forming a double line. Rochel, my precious daughter, had been there, standing somewhere in middle, with sweat trickling down her forehead. Obediently

She was once a girl just like you, until a little tick came by, and no one noticed… the playground. A group of 18 children had found themselves happily swinging, gliding, twirling, sliding, running, and tumbling in the green yard, full of joy and life. Then the kindergarten class had joined as well, and a game of tag had broken out, and the girls had spread out in the field, running gleefully round and round, in and out, away from each other and then bumping right into their fellow classmates. There was no rhyme or reason to their five-year-old play, but it didn’t matter; there was so much energy that was thrilled to just be on the go. Only an order from the secretary could convince the teacher to rein the girls in, away from the beautiful outside.

the class had marched forward, following the teacher as she wound her way across the field, through the hallways, and into their classroom. They had sat down on their little chairs as the teacher had handed each girl a cool glass of water to drink. The girls had settled down to color while the nit-checking ladies had dutifully checked every head. Eventually, it had been Rochel’s turn to be checked. The nit-checking lady — our messenger from above — had pulled out Rochel’s ponytail holder, and had gently bent her head to the side. She had pulled the first lock of hair over to inspect and then stopped, her

There, behind Rochel’s ear, was a dark colored bug, clinging tightly to the skin. She had called the teacher over and had showed her what she’d found. The teacher had grabbed my daughter by her hand, and had hurriedly walked down the hallway until she found “the mother of the school.” She had explained how they had just come back from the playground and they’d had nit-checking scheduled right after. She had showed her what was found on my daughter skin. “What do we do?” she had asked in desperation. With tweezers and strength empowered by Siyata d’Shmaya the “mother of the school”

had yanked the tick out of Rochel’s skin, leaving behind nary a mark left to show for its lodging. The teacher had then called to inform me of the episode. I panicked; mouthfuls of air came rushing out in quick, short, audible gasps. I put down the phone and called my pediatrician’s office. “Is my daughter safe?” What do I do next?”I asked. “What are the chances of Lyme disease?” The questions tumbled out incoherently as I then proceeded to recount the day’s events. “Given the timing of when the tick was found,” the nurse calmly told me, “with no sign showing that the tick was ever there, no medication or further action is needed.” The response was confident and brief as the nurse ended the call and proceeded to the next caller. Relief flooded over me as I slowly processed her words.

M y daughter was safe. There was no potential danger involved. I could breathe again like a normal human being. With my head still resting in my hands, the absolute wonder of what had happened wove its magic through me. It was now that the true impact of the precision and art of Hakadosh Baruch Hu’s hashgacha penetrated, creating ripples of serenity that reached my heart. I felt secure in the unlimited care and chesed of the Omnipotent.

Raising a child like Chaim poses a unique set of challenges that may set us apart from those who are raising a child that carries any other diagnosis. Whereas children with other special needs may show their dysfunction outwardly, Chaim’s issues remain hidden. Thus, when he may suddenly erupt in “special” behavior, others will be quick to turn their noses in disgust, judging us as incapable of parenting our child. Take a typical trip to the doctor’s office: We are sitting in the waiting room filled with socializing mommies and little people of varying shapes and sizes. Chaim suddenly spots a ponytailed toddler excitedly licking the chocolate off the top of what looks to be a custard doughnut. Have I ever told you that Chaim absolutely loves custard doughnuts? In minutes, he makes it clear to me and to an entire audience of shocked onlookers, that he also wants one, and he wants it NOW! What I see at that moment, is my autistic son acting as he is entitled to, given the challenges of impulsiveness he faces in most situations. Therefore, I swallow, and turn my attention to the fish tank instead. Being as experienced as I am at redirecting my focus in times of need, I can feel a smile visiting my face as I watch the tiny red and orange fins and tails drawing eights in the bubbled water. Little do I know what the others are seeing at that moment: There goes this seven-yearold boy, overturning the magazine rack in rage. And, what does the mother do, you ask? Well, she is basically inadequate of handling anything other than delighting in a bunch of silly fish! There are stares; there are whispers; there may even be re-

There are stares; there are whispers; there may even be reproach. Then there is shame. proach. Then there is shame. But it need not be that way. What we need is enlightenment, education, and awareness. Which will bring understanding, outreach, and support. So that our trip to the doctor’s office, supermarket, or playground will yield more pleasant experiences all around. So that our son will receive the same amount of affection and acceptance as the little girl with Down syndrome down the road. So our precious sons and daughters will be appreciated for their weaknesses just as for their strengths, for each of them has come a long way. It’s a journey that has involved so much anxiety and confusion. Vulnerability and fear. Starting from infancy, these children are thrust into a world of hyper-stimulants. With minimal or no eye-contact, developmental delays, and verbal deficiencies, they may inadvertently be thrust into depression’s wake. Having no spatial awareness, a messed sense of vision, hearing, taste, smell, and touch, they are born into the world dangling upside-down on the edge of a cliff, grasping only empty air for guidance. So they will spin the wheels of their toy cars, for routine and security. So they will rock back and forth and flap their fingers and toes, to be able to feel them. Then they will lose it over some change in schedule, because their control over what little safety they have finally clung to, has also been stolen from them. They will find solace, sometimes. In things they cannot

have. And so, they will tantrum, for otherwise, their life feels doomed. Then they will experience obsessions. Compulsions. They’ll do the same things again and again, will ask the same questions repeatedly until they are blue in the face. And then they will ask some more, about topics uninteresting to anyone around them, since that makes them feel safe, in secure territory of the known. And then they are thrust between people; those who are born with their heads up, in a tranquil world. To a wonderful environment filled with love and happiness. To a life of typical milestone development and common perception of things. And then they are lost... And ridiculed and even laughed at, instead of being appreciated and celebrated for their trials and triumphs. But now they will be no more. For we will know. We want to know. And we truly want to understand. Monsey will see educational events, workshops, and guidance. With Hashem’s everlasting aid and your steadfast participation, I will give my heart and soul, to bring the long-awaited hope and help to every single Chaim of our wonderful community. Perry Kiszner is a mother who discovered the ultimate happy medium in dealing with her special needs child through embracing and celebrating his uniqueness. 38 IDEAS TO TRY THIS SUMMER With the long summer afternoons, you’ll hear, “Mommy, I’m bored!” Look no further. These educational activities will be enjoyed by all. BUBBLES:

Who can resist bubbles? Cheap and easy, you can try these fun ideas with your kids. 1. Blow bubbles on a windy day and chase them. 2. Create a toy car wash indoors or out. 3. Foam up some dish soap, plus a few of drops water in your blender, mixer, or food processor. Put on a tray, in the sink, or bucket and play. Great sensory fun! 4. Have kids clean choice appliances using the foam bubble solution (bonus for Mommy!). 5. Take an old-fashioned bubble bath. Give your child (or yourself) time to enjoy one!

COOL TREATS Teaching counting, measuring, and science is way more fun when dealing with food. And nothing says “summer” like something sweet and frozen. Your child can help you with these kid friendly recipes.

6. Ice cream in a bag: • 1/2 cup milk • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla • 1 tablespoon sugar • 4 cups ice • 4 tablespoons salt • 2 quart size Ziploc bags • 1 gallon size Ziploc bag • gloves to keep fingers from freezing Mix the first three ingredients in a quart-size bag. Seal tightly. Place bag in the other quart size bag. Then, place inside the gallon size bag and fill the bag with ice; then sprinkle salt on top and close the bag. Put on gloves and shake the bag for five to eight minutes, making sure the ice surrounds the mixture. Enjoy the ice cream! Alternatively, use coffee cans. Put the mixture in a standard size coffee can, then place that inside a larger “economy size” can filled with ice and salt. Roll the can until the ice cream is set. 7. Prepare your own ice cream sandwich. Prepare soft cookies and ice cream. Your child can

scoop ice cream and create a sandwich. For more fun, roll the sides in sprinkles, nuts, or your favorite toppings in shallow bowls. 8. Make this yummy dessert. Using a spatula, spread a half a bucket ice cream in a 9x13 pan. Freeze for an hour. Add a layer of Nougat Cream, and freeze until hardened. Put the rest of the ice cream on top, and add cookie crumbs. 9. Bake cupcakes in ice cream cones and then decorate them. 10. Smoothies are almost a meal in a cup and easy to create. Children can peel, then cut, bananas using a butter knife. They also will love throwing fruit in. 11. Frozen fruit on a lollipop stick can placate your child when he asks for yet another “ices”. A favorite? Frozen grapes, cut in half. 12. Blend one bag frozen fruit with one Greek yogurt (black cherry flavor works well). Freeze for yummy, healthy ice cream.

SUN FUN Harness the power of the sun and be amazed, all while learning about the basic concept of heat. 13. Brew sun tea. Fill a big glass jar or pitcher with about eight cups water. Add four tea bags, with fruit such as lemon or berries. Place in direct sunlight for three hours. Stir in sugar or honey to taste. Serve with ice. Refrigerate up to a week. 14. Bake your old crayons by placing them in small cookie cutters on a baking sheet lined with wax paper. Put a ½ inch layer of broken crayons, and place in direct sunlight until it melts, about three to six hours. Cool for one hour until solid, then gently pop out of cutters. 15. In the morning or late afternoon, unroll a big piece of paper on a table. Arrange some toys on the edge. Have your child trace the shadows. 16. Make your own raisins. Boil some whole seedless grapes for thirty seconds. Immediately put into ice water. Put on a baking sheet. Cover with a breathable cloth and dry in a sunny

spot for three to five days.

BEAT THE HEAT Some days it’s too hot to be outside. Try these family activities instead. 17. Turn over a table or gather chairs into a circle in the center of the room, then drape blankets over them to construct tents. Flashlights and a non-sticky snack can create a fun environment while you read a story or sing songs. 18. Make a photo journal or a family yearbook. 19. Practice making interesting shadow puppets and then put on a show with your characters. My children love the bunny puppet!

THINGS TO DO (OUTDOORS) Revel in the warm weather and make the most of it! 20. Paint landscapes on canvas at the park, and your child will feel like an artist. Have an outdoor painting party using huge canvases or cardboard. 21. Catch (and release) fireflies. 22. Watch sunrise or sunset. 23. Stage an A to Z scavenger hunt, where you have to find something that starts with every letter. 24. Go on a photo walk and take pictures. Later, create a scrapbook with the photos.

FOR THE ENTREPRENEUR Are your children exhibiting a “business” sense? Hone in on life skills by letting them manage and create these events. 25. Turn the backyard into a carnival; set up a face painting area and games like ring toss. 26. Set up a lemonade stand on hot days. 27. Throw a great yard sale. My sister’s children had a big yard sale with many of their neighbors. Clear out your closets and earn some cash! 28. A play, concert, or puppet show can keep

groups of children occupied and entertained.

SENSORY SAND Some Wellspring therapists use sand and other sensory items during therapy as a motivator. (Of course, only with parental consent.) 29. Make an indoor sandbox using colored rice. Mix four cups of rice, three tablespoons rubbing alcohol, and a few drops of food coloring. Let dry overnight. 30. Make your own colored sand (you can use chalk to color salt) and create sand art. 31. Play “sand bakery.” 32. Sand play is notorious for its messiness. Kinetic sand allows for all the fun of sand, but no mess. Other alternatives to sand are dried beans and cornmeal.

CHALK IT UP Practice drawing on the biggest expanse! 33. Using chalk, draw sidewalk bike paths. 34. Create life-size portraits with sidewalk chalk. 35. Make a giant Hopscotch or Twister game on the lawn (with spray paint) or driveway (with chalk).

WATER PLAY Cool off with water. 36. Run through the sprinklers outside, or create your own mini sprinkler by poking holes on the bottom of a plastic cup. 37. Let kids paint the sidewalk or patio with plain old water and sponge brushes. When their creation dries, they can begin again. 38. Summer is a great time to give your child a boost. Concerned about your child’s development? Give Wellspring a call!

Six Seller Secrets for This Summer’s Real Estate Market The sale price of homes that sold recently paints a much better picture of what to expect than the price of homes that sold six months ago (or of homes that have yet to sell).

by Ann Zeilingold Each year, it seems the housing market takes on a different tone — and whether it’s going to be a sellers’ market with inflated prices and bidding wars, or a buyers’ market with tons of choices and low prices — there’s no denying that the 2016 housing season is upon us. So what does it have in store? Well, if you’re thinking of listing your home, that’s an important question. Here are six market insights that will give you a head start!

BIDDING WARS ARE BACK

RIGHT NOW = A GREAT TIME TO SELL The winter home selling season was crippled by the polar vortex, especially in the east and northeast, so there’s pent-up demand from buyers who’ve been waiting for better weather to brave the house hunt. Mortgage rates are still at historic lows, so buyers are poised to buy and ready to hit the streets.

KNOW YOUR NUMBERS: 60 PERCENT Sixty percent of all homes in 2016 will be bought and sold from May to August. Putting your home on the market at the beginning of the selling season will help your chances of snagging a winning offer before buyers turn their attention back to school starting in September.

PRICE IT RIGHT Many metros in the country have seen double-digit price increases in the past year. But this last quarter prices started to slow nationally — and pricing is a critical component to getting your house sold. With this fluctuating market, you need to look at comps of similar homes in your area, and recency matters: make sure you’re looking back no more than 60 days.

122

/ THE MONS E Y V IE W

Whether it’s going to be a sellers’ market with inflated prices and bidding wars, or a buyers’ market with tons of choices and low prices — there’s no denying that the 2016 housing season is upon us.

Bidding wars are common now. Even so, don’t bank on fielding two or three offers at once. There is, however, a good chance that you’ll still get the one that will be a winwin for both you and the buyer.

IT PAYS TO BE AHEAD OF THE CURVE Trying to get ahead of the competition? Right now we’re in the midst of prime selling and buying season. You need to list your house on target, priced to sell in today’s market. The inventory is low, and there are many buyers looking for homes. Because of this, your home can have its “moment in the spotlight” more than it will when inventory increases or the amount of buyers decrease,

as naturally they do, headed through the fall and winter.

MAKE IT POP OFF THE SCREEN! In this new mobile era, a huge percentage of buyers use apps to start their home search. And that percentage is expected to rise this year, as more buyers take advantage of easy access to the wealth of information online. Get in on this trend by making sure your home pops on those screens. Great homes with mediocre-quality photos will be quickly discarded and ultimately get less showings. Sellers should insist that their agent take the time to beef up their online listing so the quality of the home jumps off the screen and gets buyers’ attention. Local Realtor Naomi Streicher of Realty Teams says that she personally takes her own pictures or has a photographer do so. She says how the home is

presented online is key today in getting the most showings. Another key for her is the price of the home. A home that is priced right will sell quickly at or close to asking price. Sometimes a home that is priced really on target will actually sell for more than asking!

2 ROUND-TRIP TICKETS 10 NIGHTS IN A LUXURY KOSHER HOTEL

BOTTOM LINE If you want to buy or sell, now is a good time. Buyers: be prepared, have your pre-approval in place and your money ready so that you can sign contract and give a down payment. Sellers: work closely with you realtor to price your home right and present your home in the best possible light. This could make the difference between a quick sale or no sale.
