I am a mother of little children, and I don’t drive. I live in a private house. I often need to go out at night. Even if I keep the night outings to a minimum, there are still those times where I must attend simchos and events, and when those times come up, I find it very hard to get babysitters. I totally understand mothers for not wanting their girls in homes of people they don’t know, and for not letting them stay later than 10:00 pm. I did come up with an idea, and I’d like to share it. How about young, newly married women, who can use every penny, start babysitting as a parttime job? (I don’t have a problem if they bring their husbands along.) R.B.

Dear Parents, Please take this letter seriously! I am writing on behalf of my child and other children with food allergies, who can’t speak up for themselves. As you know, food allergies affects about 40 million people in the US, and allergies can be fatal. Although there is no cure yet, the only thing we can do is prevention. You can help keep our children safe, by not sending your children out to play with Bamba snacks and peanut butter sandwiches. Another thing to think about are wafers with hazelnuts. There are so many other snacks available which won’t affect our children’s lives. At the same time, it can be an opportunity to teach your children to think about other children. My good friend’s daughter was getting married. My nine-year-old daughter with Down syndrome was begging me to get her a gown for the chasuna. I kept saying “no” because I didn’t see a reason to incur the cost of buying a gown or the headache of getting one from a gemach and having to return it. Yet, my daughter was positive she was going to wear a gown to this chasunah. One Shabbos, we walked over to a different friend’s house. When we knocked at her door, no one answered. Her cousin lived in the same complex and saw us. She invited us to her house and we gratefully accepted something to drink. We spoke for a while, and I mentioned that my daughter wanted to wear a gown to a friend’s chasunah. She said she had a gown that I could borrow. As we were about to leave, my friend’s children noticed us and came over to us. It seems they had been home, but sleeping. Later on in the week, I picked up the gown. My daughter had been sure she would be wearing a gown and Hashem made it happen!

Reversing Leptin Levels When it comes to reversing leptin levels in the body, after making sleep a priority and not eating within the 2-3 hours of going to sleep, the third step is to eat a number of smaller meals throughout the day rather than two or three large meals. Some people even starve themselves for half the day, but then the other half they can’t stop eating! If you’ve ever flown on an airplane, you know the instructions they give you before taking off: “If something goes wrong during the flight, always put your own oxygen mask on first, and then you can help your children.” Most people who fly with their kids have a hard time listening to this, because they just can’t imagine taking care of themselves first in the event of an emergency — how could their children come second? There is, however, a good reason for this. Say you don’t put your own oxygen mask on first, and then you lose consciousness. If that happens, neither you nor your children will be in a good position. We can only help others if we are taking good care of ourselves first. Please don’t get me wrong, though. In no way am I comparing the act of eating to an emergency. I just want to reinforce an important point. Too many people tell me that “they don’t have time to eat,” and most of these individuals end up saying that it’s because they are too busy taking care of other people. Putting yourself last may seem like a selfless act, but if you’re exhausted, nervous, and intolerant, then everyone is bound to suffer. Your kids

We can only help others if we are taking good care of ourselves first.

and spouse will sense that you’re busy doing things for them, and they would rather you take care of yourself as well. Of course, as a mother you have certain responsibilities, but I feel it’s fair to say that if you skip meals (unless you’re a great faster, and skipping meals doesn’t affect you), most of you will get irritable at some point. So, for the sake of your family, please put your own “oxygen mask” on first when it’s time to eat. (In other words, drop whatever you’re doing and eat!) I don’t know the magic solution to sustaining ourselves and staying energized without a proper diet. Food gives us energy (at least the right foods do), and as I understand it, Hashem created food for a reason. The days we fast are designed for us to feel the pain of whatever that day symbolizes. In short, not eating is painful, and going hours without food is a form of fasting. If you’re serious about dropping weight and reversing your leptin resistance, then there is really no way around it. You need to be eating small meals every three to four hours. Eating smaller, more frequent meals is the key to reversing leptin resistance. I know that there isn’t enough time in the day to do everything we need to do and make sure we’re eating on a regular basis, but if you know that you’re doing it for your health, and to take better care of your family, I hope you will reconsider your current choices and make eating often a part of your life.

REDUCING YOUR CARBOHYDRATE INTAKE This is the fourth step toward helping you reverse your leptin resistance. The difficult part here is that not all people need to consume the same amount of carbs. In fact, in different stages of your life, you may need very different amounts of carbohydrates — and that can make things tricky. When I see clients, there are many things I take into consideration before I decide how many carbs they should be consuming each day. Also, some people do better with more carbs at the beginning,

when they have just started trying to reduce their intake, while others are better off starting with less and working their way up. When I talk about weight loss and leptin resistance, I feel comfortable saying that a person needs anywhere from 25 to 120 grams of carbs each day. Although the numbers may not make much sense to you, they are very important! If you are eating more than 120 grams of carbs per day (if you’re overweight), then chances are that you won’t lose any weight — and that means you won’t reverse your leptin resistance, either. The best way to determine the right amount for you is to meet

with an expert for an assessment. Of course, when it comes to children and teens during their growing years, many different factors must be evaluated before they significantly reduce their carb intake. Just know that reducing your carbohydrate intake is a major component of weight loss and balancing leptin levels. Rebbetzin Kleinman observed as two of her students argued during recess one day. Apparently, Tzippy was angry at Dassy because she had seen Dassy buy the last dress in a certain style. Tzippy had asked Dassy to let her buy it instead, but Dassy had refused. Tzippy felt she should have the dress because all of her sisters were wearing that style to their cousin’s chasunah and she wanted to match her sisters. Dassy felt that since she had picked it up first, she was entitled to buy it without being made to feel guilty. She was also attending a cousin’s chasunah, and while she did not have any sisters to match, this was the first dress she had liked after weeks of searching. Besides, she had found it first, and everyone knows it is firstcome-first-serve. When the argument escalated to the point where Rebbetzin Kleinman felt her intervention was required, she called for order in the classroom. The students all returned to their seats to listen to what Rebbetzin Kleinman had to say. Rebbetzin Kleinman asked the two girls who had been arguing to please stand on either side of the classroom at the front, facing each other, and requested that they close their eyes. While their

eyes were closed, she pulled from her closet a large ball and placed it on her desk directly between them. The ball was a special ball which she had purchased after hearing a moshul about resolving conflicts such as this. The ball had two differ-

This week’s Parsha begins, “Vayikach Korach… – Korach took…” (Bamidbar 16:1) Rashi explains that these words mean that he took himself to one side. R’ Elimelech Biderman, shlita, quotes the Ropshitzer Rav, zy”a that when Korach took himself to one side, it means that he was only willing to view the dispute from one side: his own. Every disagreement has two sides, and Korach did not try to see the issue from Moshe Rabbenu’s perspective. He goes on to present astounding gematrias. The gematria of “tzad” (“side”) is 94. A wise person realizes there are two sides in every disagreement. By trying to see things from the other side, a wise person gains greater clarity on the truth. Two times the gematria of tzad is 94 x 2 =188. The gematria of pikayach (wise) is also 188. A person who is wise – pikayach – sees things from two sides. Taking this one step further, if two people are both wise,

striving to understand each other’s perspective, there is shalom. When you have two wise people, you have 188 x 2 = 376, which is the gematria of shalom – peace. So many times in life we stubbornly fight to defend our own viewpoint and refuse to acknowledge that maybe there is another side. If we cling too strongly to our own opinion and defend it too vigorously, we will be that much more embarrassed if we find out we had been mistaken. If we are truly seeking the emes, we will want to know if the other side has a valid point. By nature, we will always see things from our own perspective and we will naturally believe our own view to be more correct, but a wise person tries to rise above this base level. By seeking to view things from both sides, we make ourselves more wise, bring more peace to our relationships, and risk less embarrassment in the event we are proven wrong, so even if we lose, we win. Returning to the story of Rebbetzin Kleinman’s class, both girls who were arguing over the color of the ball had been correct according to what she could see – but each could only see her own side. Neither girl had stopped to consider that another person might see the same situation differently and not be wrong. As for their original argument – well, once Rebbetzin Kleinman had taught the girls the importance of seeing both sides of a disagreement, the fight was quickly resolved. Dassy agreed that Tzippy could borrow the dress for her cousin’s chasunah as long as she had it professionally cleaned in time for Dassy to wear to her own simcha a week later. The girls, now seeing each other’s side (94) became wise (188) and together had shalom (376). May we, too, try and see the viewpoint of others so we can always have shalom in our lives.

May one put slush ice pops in their liquid form into the freezer on Shabbos so that they’ll become slush?

It is muttar. The Chachomim assured doing molid on Shabbos and using something that was nolad on Shabbos. Therefore it is assur to melt solid ice into water even if one has no intention of using the water, because, turning solid ice into water appears to be molid (‫)דומה למוליד‬. The halacha also assurs putting ice in a spot where it can melt on its own. If the ice melts on its own, it’s assur to be used on Shabbos. One may, however, put ice into liquid (as it will dissolve into the liquid and the melted ice isn’t visible by itself). However, this is only muttar if the ice dissolves on its own and one doesn’t use any utensils to aid melting. Another example is putting ices or ice cream on top of the compote. This is muttar as long as one doesn’t stir the ices/ ice cream to help it melt faster. Leading poskim also assur making ice cubes from water on Shabbos. However, if one puts the ice cubes in the freezer

just before Shabbos so that they should become ice on Shabbos, it is muttar to dissolve those ice cubes into any liquid on Shabbos because its original form was liquid at the onset of Shabbos. • It is muttar to put liquid in the freezer with the intention of only making slush. • It is also muttar to dissolve slush back into liquid. This is not considered molid. However one should refrain from aiding this process by stirring by hand. • Slush created with an ice maker that doesn’t use water (but uses condensed air) is muktzah. • One may drink from a bottle of liquid that was removed from the freezer when it was partially frozen and then defrosted. • There are some who are machmir to eat solid fish sauce (zaft) only before it dissolves. [This is not a halacha.]

It all began with a dream. A vision of awareness, of support. A new reality for our Third World Monsey — in terms of the autistic population. Especially the higher functioning ones. I Imagined our hometown as a place where parents knew whom to turn to with their child’s set of unexplained behavior; where community-wide awareness would diminish the shame that is associated with raising a child with autism. I envisioned a support team of truly sincere individuals who would hold the hands of such families all throughout their difficult journey, with provisions and services available to bring out the very best in these gifted children. I Imagined a yeshiva for our beautiful children. For those who have been struggling to keep afloat socially and behaviorally. For those who have been bullied as a result of their failure to live up to what their peers acquired naturally. I dreamed of what looked like a bridge, taking our children from their struggling life, on to the other side, by giving them the opportunity to shine in their strengths in a one-on-one environment. Just like Chaim has. The dreams were so wonderful. I began spending more and more time dreaming them. Gradually, we acquired a team. Of professionals, of experts, the very best in the field. And the more I dreamed, the more they turned it into reality, for my own son. At some point or another, I realized, I was a professional dreamer. And professional dreamer that I was, I knew that Monsey is seriously lacking. Lacking in the medium of the in-between. Of mainstream and

Of parents being forced to send their vulnerable children into the lion’s den of their typical counterparts, for lack of a better option. And finally, a lack of support systems for the struggling parents, which would make their lot oh-so-much easier to bear. Suddenly, I felt a powerful urge to wake up. To stop dreaming and start doing. Being that I already was involved with an amazing group of dedicated staff who bring years of experience to the table, our curriculum was solidly set up to give the best to our Chaim. And lastly, we had been successful in doing quite a bit of research and experimenting with various methods and therapeutic approaches to be confident in what works and what doesn’t. All which kept prompting me to keep asking myself repeatedly; if Chaim can have it, why can’t other children have it, too? If Chaim deserves an individual program, providing for his unique set of needs, then don’t others deserve it, too? And, finally, if Chaim can be getting the help which is so vital in aiding his growth towards being a functional adult, there must be a way to give others the same opportunity of acquiring vital life skills that they normally wouldn’t get — thus avoiding the sacrifice of their future potential. With that determination, we set out, taking one baby step at a time towards a new reality. With gradual yet steady progress, we are finally ready to

launch a very beautiful yeshiva program that will benefit the individual needs of our highfunctioning autistic generation. Thus, my dream came true and “Gesher L’Talmidim” was born. It is, indeed, a bridge that will get our children from a state of struggle to a place of success. The focus will be on developing each child to his fullest so that he may rejoin the mainstream setting if and when the time comes. We settled our starting date for the summertime, so that parents will have the option of a trial period before committing to a place for the upcoming school year. Our daily scheduling involves lots of outdoor activity, swimming lessons, and multisensory exercise. Since autism affects the ability to self-learn basic lessons in life, every child will be assigned to his own Rebbe and teacher, for Limudei Kodesh and Limudei Chol, so that they may learn valuable lessons in kriah, writing, Parsha, Chumash, and Mishnayos, as well as necessary math, reading, and other important skills, all at their own pace. Being a mother myself, there is a strong belief in my heart, that parents know what’s best for their child. With that in mind, we will work tirelessly to individualize each child’s program to suit his needs, as well as his parents’ intuition, so that, together, we may bring new light to a beautiful tomorrow, b’ezras Hashem.

Recap: Sara gets to know each of her neighbors well, especially Tzipoiry Eiss. But Sara also tries to tell Tzipoiry to respect Sara’s personal boundaries. A fire breaks out in the building next door in middle of the night.

Sara could hear the fire alarms above the din of crackling wood and melting shingles. Where were the people?! Sara wondered, terrified. The front driveway was empty, eerily so. Hadn’t they heard the alarms? Weren’t they the first to find out? How soon had she woken up to this? Where was everyone? Were they trapped? And where were the firefighters? They weren’t there yet. They always came too late. There were lives at stake. Had Elimelech been the only one to call? Where were they already? Were there people inside needing to be saved? Could the house be saved? The fire looked dangerous, hungry. Why wasn’t anyone doing something? From across the street, her kids and all the neighbors from the block were watching, fascinated and scared, talking like bleating sheep in the night. A rising panic gripped her. This scene would forever be etched into the young, pure minds of her children. She needed to protect them. “Let’s take the kids away,” she said to her husband. Elimelech herded them toward the car. “I want to see!” Tehilla shouted. “Yeah, we want to see,” Moshe and Benyamin said. “Let’s go. This is too traumatic,” Sara urged her husband. She shooed the kids to get into the car. “Wait. No. Wait. You take them.” How could she care about this when other lives were at stake? Her husband regarded her. “I have to make sure the neighbors are okay,” she said, and flew out of the car. She was shivering. The ground was dewy, wet, but the air was sliced with raging heat. She could hear fire alarms sounding again and again, as if the fire wasn’t sign enough, as if they needed to wake someone up. Where was everyone? Were they sleeping? How could it be? She moved toward the house, but the heat was unbearable. She ran back. Should she go into her house and try using telephoning again for help? Then she could see the neighbors congregating on her lawn. They were out. They

were coming out, scared, noisy — but alive. They exclaimed and spoke and yelled and cried, but they were there. Wait. Where was Tzipoiry Eiss? “Did anyone see Tzipoiry?” she shouted above the wails of fire engines, finally drawing closer. “No, she’s not out! But I could hardly get out myself,” Goldy Friedman’s teeth were chattering with fright and shock. Goldy had never spoken to Sara before. Used her backyard, yes. Sat at the same table for Seudah Shlishis, yes, but never spo-

Now, shaking all over, her teeth chattering, her children at her side, she spoke incessantly. “I wake up, and the alarm is going. And first, I thought it was my dream. It took me a few moments to get up. And then, I see it’s for real. The house is full of smoke, I’m coughing, and I’m like, how do I get out? I scream to my husband, ‘Wake up!’ but he’s fast asleep, so I run to get my Rivky and Heshy, and I’m ready to run out,

and the steps are burning, and I can’t leave my husband here sleeping, but I need to save my kids. I need to save my kids!” Her eyes were wide. Tears ran down her face. “And I’m scared to even go down the stairs. I wanted my husband there, but I knew it would only get worse, I didn’t have time to waste, I had to get the kids out.” Sara wanted to stay, to listen, to put an arm around the young woman and stop the volatile shaking. But she could see Goldy’s husband, disoriented and bumbling around the yard, but here, he was alive. But Tzipoiry! Where was she? Everyone was out except for her. Maybe she was at a simchah? What wishful thinking. Sara knew she would have known if Tzipoiry had a simchah. Sara would have been told, if only to be solicited for babysitting or outfit maivening or last-minute ironing or what not. From the way Goldy described her escape, how the stairs were impassable even while her husband was still sleeping, meant it took seconds for the fire to get out of control. From seeing the way the flames, having indulged their fury, were now ever more solicitous, Sara knew — she just knew — Tzipoiry’s family was trapped.

And there was nothing she could do. She had tried going close to the building, but it was suicidal, the heat unnatural, unbearable, unsurvivable. The firefighters were here. Finally. Lethargically, the engines pulled into the street, their heavy metal heaving with every turn. The men huddled together to discuss a game plan. One of them started unrolling the hose. Sara couldn’t contain herself and burst into the circle of gathered fire volunteers. “There’s a family that’s still trapped inside!” she screamed. “The others who got out almost didn’t make it! The Eiss family lives second door left!” They looked at her, and still, there was a pause, as they regarded her, and her insistence that they move. “Please, I beg you. A family with five young children are unaccounted for. Left side, second floor. Please!” She was crying, and she couldn’t tell if it was because of the fire, which was now occupying the entire front of the house, even jumping the fire wall to the other side. “You have to stand back,” a burly blond firefighter told her. “This is a fire zone.” “A family is inside! Don’t rope off the area when there are lives to be saved. Do something!” “Keep back. Keep back!” “If you’re not going in there I have to go in. I can’t stand here when I know that five children are trapped in a fire!”

“There’s a family that’s still trapped inside!” She was pushed aside by firefighters with a promise that, “Everything is being taken care of” I should have gone in. I can never live with this. Never. Never. Where were they? Were they still in pain? Not knowing what else to do with herself, short of taking her own life in the blaze, she threw herself into the prickly bush at the curb and heaved terrible, helpless tears. Tzipoiry, her big annoying face, and the faces of her children, sweet, beautiful, often smeared with unwashed dirt and framed with unbrushed hair, lost in clouds of blackish smoke. Every inch of her said, “Do something. Do anything. Just go in and act.” Every inch of her remained rooted to the spot. With the ugly fire blazing in the background, she clutched at the bush, allowing the pricks to burrow into her skin. And she davened like she never had before. To be continued...

Lemon-Flavored Chicken Breasts Quick, easy, filling, and dietetic.

Ingredients: 4 chicken breasts 2 tablespoons honey 1 tablespoon lemon zest* 2 tablespoons oil Salt and pepper to taste

Directions: 1. In a small bowl, mix honey, lemon zest, oil, and salt and pepper. Pour over cutlets and let marinade for 2-3 hours 2. Grill cutlets for 3-4 minutes per side. Serve with fresh lemon rounds.

Zucchini Lasagna This is really a guilt-free milchig supper.

Ingredients:

8 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese 15 ounces low-fat cottage cheese Salt and pepper, to taste 2 medium zucchini, sliced into thin half-rings 1 garlic clove, chopped 2 teaspoons oregano 6 no-bake lasagna noodles ½ cup part-skim mozzarella cheese

1. Preheat oven to 425°. 2. In a medium bowl, combine cream cheese, cottage cheese, and salt and pepper. Set aside. In another bowl, combine zucchini, garlic, and oregano. 3. Spread 1/3 of the zucchini mixture in an 8-inch pan. Top with two lasagna noodles, then 1/3 of the cheese mixture. Repeat another two times; zucchini mixture, noodles, and then cheese mixture. Sprinkle top with ½ cup mozzarella cheese. 4. Cover with foil and bake until bubbly and noodles are soft, about 35 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 20 minutes.

The general election process, unlike the primary process, was laid out in the Constitution of the United States when it was first written. Let’s have a look at Article II Section I: “…Each State shall appoint, in such Manner as the Legislature thereof may direct, a Number of Electors, equal to the whole Number of Senators and Representatives to which the State may be entitled in the Congress: but

the Presence of the Senate and House of Representatives, open all the Certificates, and the Votes shall then be counted. The Person having the greatest Number of Votes shall be the President… “ When writing the Constitution, the Framers based many of the federal laws on existing state laws and structures. Most of the states had the three-branch system: executive, legislative and judicial, and so the Framers con-

structed the federal government to have that as well. In some states, the legislative branch selected a person to serve as the executive, or the governor. In other states, the people voted for an executive themselves. There was much discussion among the Framers about how our federal executive, the president, would be selected, via the legislature or popular vote. In the end, they reached a compromise. Neither Congress nor the electorate votes for the president will be the one to select the president. A special committee was created for the purpose of voting in the presi-

dent. This committee is called the Electoral College. Each candidate running for president has his or her own group of electors in each state, generally chosen by the candidate’s political party. The electors equal the number of representatives that state has in Congress. For example, Vermont has three members of Congress — two senators and one representative — so they have three electors chosen for the democratic presidential candidate and three for the republican. California, which has 55 members of Congress — two senators and 53 representatives, has 55 electors for each candidate as well. Washington D.C. gets three electors; the minimum amount any state can have. On Election Day, when voters cast their ballot for one of the presidential candidates, they are technically voting for their candidate’s electors. When the votes are tallied, the electors for the candidate who got the most votes in that state, get to cast their votes for the president. Most states appoint their electors on a winner-take-all basis, based on the statewide popular vote on Election Day; meaning the candidate with the majority votes in that state get all of the state’s electors. Maine and Nebraska are the only two current exceptions, as both states use the congressional-district method. The electors meet in December of election

year (the first Monday after the second Wednesday in December to be exact; this year it will be December 19th). Their votes are recorded on a “Certificate of Vote,” which is then sent to Congress who counts the votes on the 6th of January in the year following Election year (in our case January 6th, 2017). So what does it really take for a presidential candidate to win the election? Rather than winning the popular vote, they must win at least 270 electors (435 members in the House of Representatives + 100 senators + 3 representatives for Washington D.C. = 538 / 2 =269 + 1 for the majority). So, going forward, candidates will focus

on the states with the most electors that are up for grabs and try to win the popular vote in those states. There are some states that will almost always go to one of the two parties. For example, New York will vote democrat, while Texas will vote republican. Then there are “swing states,” states that have an approximately even number of democratic and republican voters. Each political party calculates a path to victory. They chalk the states that vote for them into their column and the states that vote against them in their opponent’s column. And then they do research and run polls and try to figure out what positions their candidates should take,

how the candidate should present themselves so that he or she will have to best chance of winning in enough swing states to get to 270. The campaigns will then spend most of their ad money in those states. Those are also the states which the candidates will spend the most time campaigning in. This year, the states you should be looking out for are Ohio, Colorado, Iowa, Nevada, New Hampshire, Virginia, and Florida — as well as Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan. These are the states in which we will be following the polls closely over the coming months to try and get a handle on where we might be at the end of this ever-changing election cycle.

At 887 feet of armor-plated steel, the 45,000-ton Battleship New Jersey which served in World War II, the Korean War, Vietnam, and the Gulf War, dominates not only the New Jersey waterfront, but also American naval history. Winding through tight, narrow companionways, visitors see the communication center, and officers’ and enlisted men’s mess halls and sleeping quarters, which range from small private rooms for senior officers to even smaller cots stacked atop each other for enlisted men. The dimly lit Combat Engagement Center displays radar and sonar tracking stations, while videos show the launch of Tomahawk missiles. A highlight of the tour is the turret where 2,700-pound shells were loaded and fired. The Franklin Institute is an interactive museum where visitors learn about scientific concepts in hands-on science experiments and exhibits, ranging from anatomy and body health to electricity and airplanes. It has a fulldome planetarium with assorted 3D shows, and a few premium experiences that are available for an upcharge. The most iconic exhibit of The Franklin Institute, The Giant Heart, is where children get to actually explore the chambers of a two-story-high heart and push through clear and clogged arteries. After that, they can step into a surgical suite and learn about open-heart surgery. The Electricity exhibit is not only interactive, where visitors can generate enough electricity to turn on a light bulb and isolate themselves from static charges, but includes historical artifacts such as tools used by the founder of electricity himself, Benjamin Franklin. There are some adult exhibits, such as Your Brain. It is a fascinating exhibit where visitors get to explore and experiment with how their brain works and processes information. There, they can run lie detector tests, scale a neural climb, and participate in interactive displays. In Sir Isaac’s Loft, physics comes to life. Children can test Newton’s Laws of Motion with prisms, pulleys, and pendulums, and also discover how energy is transferred between moving objects. Pulleys are even used to lift their body weight with ease. Parking is pricey, so consider taking public transit.

Pick up free timed tickets for the Independence Hall, where the Founding Fathers hammered out the beginnings of the United States. While there, be sure to visit the nearby iconic Liberty Bell in Liberty Bell Tower, one of the parkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s most most famous attractions that draws more than 2.2 million people per year. See the famously fractured bronze bell and snag a nice view of Independence Hall through the glass windows that look out over the park. Move on to the National Constitution Center, dedicated to the four most powerful pages in American history, for special exhibits as well as an action-packed look at the history and ongoing impact of the Constitution. Besides for the abovementioned site, which every tourist visits, there are some secrets hidden within the 55 acres that make up Independence National Historical Park.

Among those secrets are a series of little known gardens. Just above Walnut Street between 3rd and 4th streets sit two classic recreations of 18th Century Gardens. The gardens were created by the National Park Service and their style is meant to demonstrate what a garden in Philadelphia would have looked like in the 18th century. Further south along Locust street, between 4th and 5th streets, there are two more gardens. The northernmost garden is known as the Rose Garden and was originally donated in 1971 to honor those who signed The Declaration of Independence. Just south of the Rose Garden is the Magnolia Garden, a garden donated back in 1959 by in honor of the founders of our nation. Walking an extra few blocks to these gardens can provide an opportunity to escape the crowds in Independence Park and enjoy a meal in comfort. The Magnolia and Rose Gardens provide the most open space and seating to enjoy a picnic lunch or supper.

THE LIBERTY BELL • Next to the Statue of Liberty, the White House, and Mount Rushmore, the Liberty Bell is probably one of the most well-known icons in America. Weighing in at 2,080 pounds, this big bell was originally commissioned in 1751 to announce important events taking placing in the Philada, Pennsylvania State House — which is now known to the world as Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. • The Liberty Bell developed its first crack on the day it was first tested for sound, the crack likely the result of casting flaws. Attempts at adding additional copper and recasting the bell produced no better results. The bell continued to crack with time, and finally, at the annual ringing that took place on George Washington’s birthday, the Liberty Bell split beyond repair. • Though many associate the Liberty Bell with the Declaration of Independence, the bell was actually undergoing repairs at the time that Congress declared independence in 1776, and is highly improbable that it rang in honor of the monumental event. It is believed that a fictional story written in 1847 accredited the Liberty Bell with ringing out in declaration of independence, due to a particularly moving scene that captured the minds of readers. • The iconic bell was actually given the name of “Liberty” due to the abolitionists that adopted it as a symbol of their movement. It first appeared on the cover an 1837 edition of the magazine Liberty, published by the New York Anti-Slavery Society, and thus earned its name. Until that point, it was solely referred to as “The State Bell.”

BELLS WORTH BOASTING ABOUT THE SPIRITUAL ASPECT OF BELLS • On the hem of the Kohen Gadol’s me’il, metal bells were placed in an alternating pattern together with metal pomegranates. Every small movement the Kohel Gadol made caused a tinkling sound to be heard, reminding one that every tiny action has repercussions. (Rabbi Mordechai Gifter tz”l.) • It is the also the custom of some Jewish communities to design the crown or finials (rimonim) that are placed on a Sefer Torah with small bells to alert congregants that the Torah is being removed for laining. • Beyond these circumstances however, bells are of limited use in Jewish life due to their roots in avodah zara, for what they were originally created.

• The Tsar Bell of the Moscow Kremlin is the world’s largest bell, weighing in at a whopping 445,166 pounds! It was never rung, having developed a crack during a fire that broke out while it was being cast. The tremendous heat of the fire as it burned the bell’s wooden support structure and the subsequent cold water splashed upon it to douse the flames caused the bell to split in eleven places, rendering it useless. • Bell pulls were used by the affluent to summon servants during the 1850s, and perhaps even earlier. Connected to a tuggable cord, bells with various tones would be installed in each room of a house, signaling to servants their master’s specific location and desire of service. • Hard of hearing, Alexander Graham Bell’s mother was the catalyst for Bell’s fascination with hearing, speech, and vibrations. Through his work with the deaf population, Bell was able to teach many people to speak despite hearing disabilities. In fact, Bell was the founder of The American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf, and spent his life working with the deaf community, including Helen Keller. While researching ways to help this population, Alexander Graham Bell happened to invent the telephone. • Handbells are small bells designed to be rung by hand. Though handbells were used since the late 1600s as a way to catch people’s attention, the art of ringing handbells is now considered a form of music, with many various techniques used to produce melodious sounds. More importantly, handbells take their place in music therapy, enabling even some of the most severely disabled members of society to have the satisfaction of creating music. Now that’s boastworthy!

Adjusting to Health Chiropractic Part 1

What Is Chiropractic? The most popular form of treatment in alternative health, chiropractic is a hands-on, drugfree approach to health care. Primarily known for treating back pain, the goals of chiropractic care is to treat subluxation (dysfunction in a joint, or misaligned bone) prevent injury in the musculoskeletal system, as well as to provide relief for many other diseases. The main treatment technique, Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT) is where the hands are used to manipulate, massage, mobilize, adjust, stimulate, apply traction to, or otherwise influence the spine, joints, and related tissues to correct a subluxation. This restores mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury (caused by a traumatic event such as falling), or repetitive stress, (such as sitting without proper back support). However, many chiropractors also offer counseling in areas such as therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises and healthy living, and chiropractic is sometimes used in conjunction with conventional medical treatment.

Early Beginnings Chiropractic was founded in 1895 by Daniel David Palmer in Iowa. His first chiropractic pa-

tient was a janitor in his office building who claimed that he had severely reduced hearing for 17 years, which started soon following a “pop” in his spine. Hypothesizing that manual adjustment of the spine could cure all disease, Palmer adjusted the janitor’s spine. Several days later, the patient claimed his hearing was almost completely restored! Although he initially kept chiropractic a family secret, in 1898 Palmer began teaching it to a few students at his new Palmer School of Chiropractic. His son Bartlett Joshua (BJ) Palmer, took over the Palmer School in 1906, and rapidly expanded its enrollment. In the beginning, those in the field of chiropractic disdained the use of instruments. However, in 1910, B.J. changed course and endorsed X-rays as necessary for diagnosis (though this caused a large amount of the more conservative faculty and students of Palmer School

to leave). By the 1930s, chiropractic was the largest alternative healing profession in the U.S. However, its western medical rival — the American Medical Association (AMA) — sought to delegitimize it. They lobbied to get chiropractors arrested — simply for helping patients with their hands. D.D. Palmer and approximately 12,000 other chiropractors were jailed. In response, B.J. Palmer cofounded the Universal Chiropractors’ Association (UCA) to provide legal services to arrested chiropractors. Although the UCA won their first case in 1907, prosecutions instigated by state medical boards became increasingly common and in many cases were successful. In response, chiropractors conducted political campaigns to secure separate licensing statutes, eventually succeeding in all fifty states. By the mid 1990s there was a growing scholarly interest in chiropractic, which helped efforts to improve service quality and establish clinical guidelines that recommended manual therapies for acute lowback pain. In recent decades, chiropractic gained legitimacy and greater acceptance by medical physicians and health plans, and enjoys a strong demand for services.

Frequently Asked Questions: What certification is required for a DC (Doctor of Chiropractic)? Education typically includes an undergraduate degree plus three or four years of chiropractic college at institutions accredited by the U.S. Department of Education. How do chiropractors diagnose illness? They don’t; they only analyze what is happening in the person’s body and how to apply adjustments. A chiropractor first takes medical history, performs a physical examination, and may use lab tests or diagnostic imaging to determine if treatment is appropriate for the patient. Chiropractors may also refer a patient to an appropriate specialist, or comanage with another health care provider. Sometimes chiropractors will claim that there is subluxation in the spinal structure, yet it won’t show up on an X-ray. Why is that? Often, the subluxation is a functional entity; not structural misalignment. Therefore, the abnormality is no more visible on static X-ray than a limp or headache or any other functional problem. Are there any risks involved in chiropractic care? If so, what are they? Spinal manipulation and chiropractic care are generally considered safe, effective treatments, and there is a lot of evidence suggesting that. As with every therapeutic and medical interventions, though, adverse reactions are possible. One concern which has received some recent coverage is stroke caused by cervical manipulation (though cases have been very rare). Does chiropractic pose a danger for any specific group of people? People who have osteoporosis, spinal cord compression, or inflammatory arthritis, or who take blood-thinning medications should not undergo spinal adjustments. In addition, patients with certain types of cancer (such as bone cancer in the spine or neck) may not be ideal for regular chiropractic care. There are, however, very gentle techniques appropriate for almost any situation. Alternative health generally isn’t covered by insurance plans. However, chiropractors are subjected to rigorous medical studies and licensing laws. Does medical insurances cover their services? In the U.S., most states require insurers to cover chiropractic care, and most HMOs cover these services, including Medicare, and some Medicaid plans.

The Science The theory in chiropractic is that proper alignment of the body’s musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, enables the body to heal itself without surgery or medication. This is based on the scientific premise that the body is a self-healing and selfregulating organism. How to heal is controlled by the brain and transmitted via the spinal cord and nerves throughout the body. Our skull protects the delicate structures of the brain and the spine protects the intricate communication pathways of the spinal cord and exiting nerve roots. If these nervous system pathways become impaired, malfunction of the tissue and organ function throughout the body can result, leading to disease. The art of chiropractic focuses on this relationship between the spine and the nervous system and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. By treating dysfunction (or subluxation, in chiropractic lingo) in the musculoskeletal system, health is restored to the body’s “communication system,” allowing for it to send accurate, healing messages which will help restore the body to optimal health. There is nothing better than a batch of mug cakes. They are easy to prepare, are ready in a flash and since they are single-serving sized, they leave behind no evidence that you cheated on your diet. Because not every microwave has the same wattage, cooking times may vary, and be aware that you need to cook these until just set or they will be overdone. Finally, for best taste and texture, mug cakes should be eaten immediately.

Apple Crumble in a Mug Perfect for those times when you really crave apple crisp but have no patience to make a whole pan’s worth. The list of ingredients may look intimidating but I promise you it is really, really, easy, really, really fast and really, really good!

Crumbs 1 ½ tsp margarine 1/8 tsp. cinnamon 1 ½ tsp. packed brown sugar 1 ½ tsp. sugar 1 ½ tsp. whole wheat flour 2 ½ tsp. quick cooking oats

Apples: 1 medium red apple, peeled and cored ½ tsp. sugar ½ tsp. lemon juice 1/8 tsp. cinnamon 1 Tbsp. water ¼ tsp. cornstarch Mix all ingredients for crumbs and set aside. Dice apples into 1/3 inch thick chunks and place in a greased mug. Toss with sugar, lemon juice and cinnamon, adjusting seasoning to taste. Microwave at 20 second intervals until apples shrink down and are nearly soft. Mix cornstarch with water, add to apples and mix well. Sprinkle crumbs over apples and microwave 35 seconds. Enjoy immediately.

Peanut Butter Stuffed Brownie in a Mug This is really indulgent but not too sweet, which I appreciate. If you need your brownies sweeter, feel free to play around with the sugar. These are also low in fat which means there is less guilt and more pleasure. ¼ cup cocoa ¼ cup flour ¼ cup sugar 1 tsp. vanilla sugar pinch salt pinch baking powder 2 tsp. oil 6 Tbsp. water 1 ½ tsp. peanut butter 1 ½ tsp. powdered sugar Mix peanut butter and powdered sugar into a ball and set aside. Combine all other ingredients until smooth and pour into a greased mug, dropping peanut butter ball vertically into the center of the mug. Microwave for 30 seconds, then at 10 second intervals until the top is just set — it took about 80 seconds on my microwave. Eat warm, making sure to get some peanut butter in every delicious bite!

Massive Chocolate Chip Cookie This has been my go-to recipe for sleepovers for a long time and the smell alone puts me in a good mood. 2 egg yolks 2 Tbsp. sugar 2 Tbsp. brown sugar 2 Tbsp. oil 7 Tbsp. flour ¼ tsp. baking powder pinch salt ¼ tsp. vanilla lots of chocolate chips Beat egg and add sugars, oil and vanilla and mix well. Add flour, baking powder and salt and mix again until combined. Add chocolate chips as desired and pour into a greased, oversized mug. Microwave for 30 seconds, then repeatedly at 10 second intervals until just done — 60 seconds was perfect for me. Eat right away!

No one is whining or pulling at my skirt. No one

needs me, asks of me, demands of me. No one is taking me away from the moment. I inhale a gulp of fresh, unpolluted air, and look around with content. Three days all to myself. How will I fill them? I will sleep. The thought is obvious, but still exhilarating. I will sleep as long as I’d like. No one will tear me away from my bed at three am for a bottle, and no mischievous toddler will be raiding the cabinets at six am. I won’t be blinking in exhaustion

in the afternoon and collapse on the couch when bedtime — oh, now kiddies’ bedtime is far away — is over. I will be rejuvenated and relaxed all day, and take a rest whenever I want. I will enjoy the quiet. I will sit in the stillness and listen to my thoughts so I can almost hear them. I will enjoy the rare moments of unbroken solitude. I will breathe deeply and appreciate my breath, my life, my existence. I will look deep inside myself and discover who I really am. I will be at one with my true self. I will just be. I will do things I love. I’ll sit down, or lie down, to the book I’ve wanted to read for years and will lose myself in the magic of a good read. I will reconnect to that hobby of my teenage years and allow myself to just enjoy. And it will be time to take out the writing projects that haven’t got past their second line. I will let my pen take me to far and exciting places — in the vistas of my very own heart. And I won’t forget the book of midrashim I’d always wanted to study. I will pore over the timeless lessons and allow myself the intellectual stimulation I so crave. Over meals I will also satisfy that need with intellectual, mature discussions on controversy and matters of true significance with my peers. I will talk and debate truth and honesty and values, the things that truly inspire me. I will enjoy nature. The breathtaking nature around me calls to me. It slices my heart with

waves of pain, the pain of longing. How I love nature, how much I miss it. I will have the joy of seeing a pure and beautiful world, designed by a perfect hand. I will gaze at nature’s innocence and give it a place in my heart. I will walk among trees and shrubbery and flowers, and stop to wonder at their virgin beauty. I will stand in open grass fields and see nothing but earth and sky. I will see a world that follows the Heavenly call, the world that fulfills His command without question. I will lie on the beach, listening to the reassuring wash of the waves as it lunges toward me and then demurely recedes. I will sink into the carpet of warm sand and let it slide

Racing to a Colorful Finish For Chesed 24/7 The sky was bright blue, the grass was vivid green, and the sun a cheerful yellow, but those colors paled by comparison as 500 women and girls cheerfully found themselves blasted with rainbows of paint as they showed their support for Chesed 24/7 at its second annual Color Run. The 5K race, held at Eugene Levy Memorial Park in Pomona on June 26th, was the kind of event that organizations dream of: a successful fundraiser that was thoroughly enjoyed by all. “This is a lot of fun for a very good cause with people of all ages coming and having a good time,” added volunteer Rachel Katz. “It’s really nice to see how this brings together all different types of people.” Walkers and runners traversed the course at the pace of their choice, some sprinting to the finish line hoping to set personal records, while oth-

ers took their time, chatting amiably with friends old and new, while enjoying the inspirational messages written on the path in sidewalk chalk and the encouraging (and often hilarious) signs posted along the path. Dozens of the almost 100 volunteers on hand were interspersed all over the course, some armed with paint guns, who drenched participants in bursts of pink, yellow, orange, blue, and green, while others handed out freeze pops. While all finishers received commemorative medals, everyone walked away with something far greater — a sense of satisfaction, knowing that they helped Chesed 24/7 continue its vital work within the community that involves serving up meals to hospitalized patients, stocking hospitality rooms, running equipment gemachs, and arranging special programs for seniors and the developmentally disabled.

What You Need, to Get a Mortgage Loan

by Ann Zeilingold Here are ten documents/pieces of information that you absolutely need to be able get a mortgage loan: 1. Driver’s license — verifies identity and is Patriot-act compliant 2. Secondary ID (social security card or passport) — needed to support #1 3. Most recent 1-month pay stubs for anyone paid w-2 and salary wages 4. W-2 forms for the last two years — to document employment and earnings history 5. Signed personal and business federal tax returns for last two years — to look for unreimbursed expenses, any taxes due, whether there is any corporate or self-employed income, dividend and retirement income listed. 6. Personal bank statements for last two months, all pages — documenting sufficient funds to close. 7. Fully executed contract of sale 8. Cleared down payment check and corresponding bank statement 9. Name and contact info for your realtor and attorney 10. Name and contact for your insurance agent, if this is a refinance loan Once you decide to start the mortgage process, if there is anything that you cannot provide, discuss it with your loan officer. We know of alternative avenues if something cannot be obtained. Just last week we had a situation where the underwriter was requiring a bank statement with a certain amount of money in it. The problem was our client had a bank statement with just $1,500 in it; the money they were to use was a gift which was deposited in their attorney’s account. We provided a

simple explanation, and the condition was waived. Sometimes tax returns aren’t yet filed, or were not required to be filed. Sometimes there are job changes or gaps of employment, full-time to part-time work. Your loan officer will come up with the solutions. Be prepared to compile the list mentioned above. We can’t always shortcut the basics, but we can build and figure solutions once we see the basics. We had a client who was anxious to get a mortgage loan, but the paperwork was daunting. Our processors called his accountant to get the tax returns. We used a system called “The Work Number,” that his employer was affiliated with, to get the pay stubs. We called his attorney for the contract of sale. We accessed his bank statements in our office when he was there to get his cleared down payment check and bank statements. All he had to give me was his ID! And we used only a driver’s license! The biggest frustration is when we require more documentation after review of what is received. When going through the mort-

gage process, be prepared for that. Sometimes it can take some time for the underwriter to get back with a “yes” or a “no” on documents. The best way to alleviate the stress is to provide as much documentation as you can up front and work closely with your loan officer and the team. That
