A SWEET DEAL

There’s so much in your publication every week, that I make sure not to miss a single issue. Sara’s erev Pesach column was an appreciated addition. In combination with the Sweet Expressions incentive, cleaning for Pesach turned into a sweet deal. My kids knew if they let Mommy clean then, The Monsey View will give them an ice cream. Keep up your great work. Y.L.

Whoever took my cleaning lady, the Polish “Teresa” that comes to me every year before Pesach, enjoy her! She is a great, trained-in-cleaning lady that worked solely for us — for the past ten years. We are deeply pained and shocked over her leaving. Please remember that there is din v’cheshbon. We were totally relying on her, and you took her away just two weeks before Pesach! Even if you took her as an aid for an elderly patient, know that you could have waited until after Pesach. A Gut Yom Tov!

not feel overwhelmed? While I feel that this topic has been covered all over, I want to stress again, how, by doing one thing differently, you’re entire perspective will change. I believe most of you that voiced the question and quite a few others who haven’t, don’t fully believe their worth as in what they’re doing. There are a lot of products to make your kitchen shine and lots of shortcuts to get there. But the true essence is in how it’s done. There are no shortcuts to doing things with simchah and keeping your head up with pride, fulfilling your duty with joy. If we’re constantly thinking about what else has to get done, we’re not accomplishing much. While you peel the apples for the compote, and you’re mind is preparing the cucumber salad, potato kugel, roast, charoses, and 98 different things, that’s what gets all of you (and me) overwhelmed. Take a moment today, tomorrow, Chol Hamoed; a day when you’re busy, busy, and busy some more, giving, giving, and giving some more — and dwell on the fact that the actual beauty of yom tov is in all that you’ve done and prepared. While having all the meals catered or going away for yom tov is a dream of many, I’ve altered that dream to a simple wish: To live moment by moment and focus with my heart and mind on the here and now. That is the only real way one doesn’t feel overwhelmed. To a truly beautiful yom tov, Sara G. Declutter

Inbox Talk of Town

As the original letter writer, I apologize for opening a can of worms. I want to clarify that I am a born and bred Monsey girl, raising my family here too. I live in a private home with big houses next door and across the street. But I find the “monstrosities” being built refreshing. Monsey used to be so quiet! So boring! No selection of stores, no competition of prices, scary to walk by yourself down to Main Street... Friday night after the seudah you wouldn’t see “a nefesh in di gassen”... Maybe people prefer it that way. I definitely appreciate the change. I love that my kids have more neighbors.. We have more company to schmooze with, and there are people in the streets! Let’s not divide between old-timers and new-timers, because there are some oldtimers like me who enjoy this change. It used to be very hard for a Brooklyn boy to marry a Monsey girl; it was a sacrifice for him. Now it’s easier! Let’s appreciate the changes and bracha of a beautiful heimishe shtetl town. I have news for you: Monsey ain’t becoming a city so fast, not until there’s a traffic light, a grocery, bank, and bus stops at each corner. We still need to go to Main Street and Route 59 to shop... Let’s enjoy our new friends! I appreciate the positive attitude which the serial has taken on. This is life and we need to stay positive. Chag Kosher v’Sameach! E.P.

Your Voice RE: SCHOOL’S OUT...ALREADY?

rts: er sta t s e m e

y, May Sunda EEE trial class S

r Call fo

FR your

Some perspective on the ongoing controversy: Firstly, let’s keep in mind that our children are our blessing and should not be viewed as a burden. Yes, they need to be cared for and occupied during this extremely hectic season, but should never be made to feel like a nuisance or in their mother’s way when bringing in yom tov. They need to feel wanted and loved in their own home 365 days a year, including the days leading up to Pesach. That being said, the purpose of sending our children to school is for them to learn right from wrong and receive a proper chinuch and Yiddishe education. Our beautiful yomim tovim are a major foundation of chinuch, and a part of that is the preparation that comes before Pesach. It is our responsibility to instill the proper attitude of simcha and geshmak in preparing for this special highlight of the year. As a working mother myself, I feel that my children’s overworked, underpaid teachers are the first ones to deserve a few days to pull themselves together and bring in yom tov somewhat calmly for their own families. Let’s not forget that they put up with a lot! The responsibility of being in the line of chinuch today is tremendous! The kochos that they invest in our children daily cannot possibly be compensated with the meager paychecks they receive, and yet they persevere! We need those special women more than you may care to realize. We need to appreciate their ongoing enthusiasm and expertise. They are building our future. The least we parents can

44

/ THE M O N SE Y VI E W

do is show them that we value their time and energy. Thank you to all the local schools that provide the much needed service of Fun School. In my opinion, it’s money well spent. If you feel like you cannot afford it at this costly time of year, there are plenty other places you can cut down on your spending. Why should it be on the cheshbon of your own child’s teacher? If you choose to send your children to Fun School, present it as an erev yom tov treat for your little ones, not as a babysitting service. Have a wonderful yom tov with harchavas hada’as and lots of nachas! P.S. While we’re on the topic... Our children learn so much in school in preparation for Pesach and especially for the Seder. In some families, the Seder itself is way too hectic, and it’s difficult to listen to what everyone has to say. Try to make time over yom tov to look your children in the eyes and truly listen to what they learned. Give them the gift of your time! They deserve it! It is more important than anything else. Needless to say, express your appreciation to the teacher who made it happen... Chag kosher v’sameach!

The “school’s out” discussion didn’t touch me too much until I found out that my first grader was going to be home for a full week before Pesach, because Fun School wasn’t even being offered for elementary! I nearly went into a state of shock when I heard. I’ll pay if I have to, but please,

Your Voice PLEASE, let my daughter go to school for that week! As much as I love her, she needs stimulation, and I just can’t offer it while I’m busy doing Mommy-work! Get teenagers to take over if you must, but please at least offer Fun School! R.R.

I understand the point that the letter writer is trying to bring across, but she sounds a little overwhelmed. Maybe it calls for cutting just a little of her work? It’s interesting that everything is different than years ago. Our parents never complained about us coming home a week before Pesach. And they were holocaust survivors. We never heard them complaining about it. This is really new to me. Anonymous

Thanks for broaching this pertinent topic. As a former school employee, I recall the glee with which we embraced Pesach vacation. And yet, I fail to understand the concept of giving young children off from school for a full week before Pesach. This year, when Bedikas Chometz is on a Thursday, it really will be a very long week home for the kinderlach and their mommies. A Fun School included in the yearly tuition would be a logical and affordable solution

Your Voice for teachers and mothers alike. A Former School Employee

Dear Frustrated Mother, As your daughter’s preschool teacher, can I please show you the other side of the coin? I have a few questions for you. #1: Are you up to date with tuition, so we can get paid on time? #2: I sure hope and I am dan l’kaf zechus that your kids don’t wear $15-20 headbands, $90 shoes etc. If yes, perhaps you should shift your priorities. Did you ever try to imagine how your kvetchy-daughter-inthe-need-of-TLC’s teacher feels after six hours of taking care of 18+ charges? You may be sure she barely remembers her own name, let alone has energy to make supper or take care of her own brood! And you still want her to work until Zero Hour? (You say Pesach doesn’t come as a surprise. I can’t exactly kasher a week to Purim.) Please try to be realistic; we all have to make Pesach. Your kids are not play dolls. Let the people who take care of them all year have the energy to continue doing so with devotion, heart, and menuchos hanefesh. I hope you find erev yom tov manageable. A TLC-Giving Teacher

Thank you for your wonderful magazine. I love it. I read it cover to cover. I want to comment on the woman who was disappointed that children finish school so early before Pesach. I totally agree with her. We all love our children, and that’s exactly why we want them to stay in a calm atmosphere. Kids don’t’ enjoy being home when

48

/ THE M O N SE Y VIE W

their mother is just so busy, and the house is so hectic. The teachers who responded last week, didn’t really answer the questions that were asked. They didn’t explain how come the city teachers do manage. They don’t walk into class with a coffee in hand either. A job is a job. And again, if the school feels that teachers deserve a week off, no problem! However it should be at the school’s expense: they should be paying for fun school teachers.

RE: A DIFFERENT TAKE ON COMMUNITY GROWTH

Responding to T. Sander: “I feel that you cannot fully understand the young generation needing a roof over their heads for a decent price,” you wrote in your letter last week. Well, actually, I am one of the younger generation that just happened to have had Siyata d’Shmaya to buy during an uncustomarily low point in a buyers’ market. I think that’s one thing that’s missing from this entire discussion: Hashem. No, I don’t worry about where my kids are going to live. That’s Hashem’s department. Just as he saw fit to give a 20-something a little house before the bubble, so too He will take care of my kids — as well as yours, if you let him! And Hashem is also the same one that sent us our Brooklyn brethren, taking care of them too, even if His plan isn’t your plan! As they say, “Don’t fight City Hall.” This is the situation as ordained by a Higher Authority. You can spend your energy fighting it or you can face reality and embrace it. Send over a cake to your new neighbors and give them a warm smile. Our job in this world is not to always be comfortable; it is to grow through discomfort and reach a place of acceptance. We were blessed with

Your Voice a tremendous opportunity to show our achdus now in the days right before Moshiach makes his blessed presence. Do we want to miss that opportunity with sour faces and angry hearts? Do bear in mind, however, that this chance at achdus works both ways: While “old-timers” do have to stop fighting the newcomers — builders need to consider the neighbors and go out of their way to make things easier, although change is inevitable. Don’t let construction trucks park on the sidewalk/others’ driveways, don’t leave a porta-potty in front of someone’s house, and don’t design your garbage area where the neighbor will have to stare it every time they walk outside! Ask the neighbor for specific ways to accommodate them and offer things like privacy fencing or greenery to cover up the view. Let’s just try to always think of the other side! B.F.

KIDS AND COLLECTING

Dear Mothers, Erev anything, be it Shabbos or yom tov, is a difficult time for me, as well as many others. It’s the time we work the hardest, and I find that by the time the kids are home, every bone in my body is aching. I keep going and going and going, until finally, if I’m lucky, I, and/or my kids can lie down for a nap. And then your kids coming knocking relentlessly on the door, waking up the baby, or mixing into the erev stress, or just making me stand up from the spot from where I am finally sitting after a long day. They come pushka in hand, for a penny or two, or more — and although I cherish the mitzvah of tzedakah and would happily give them nearly any other time on a regular day (except bedtime hour!)

they bother me tremendously on any erev. Why, mothers, do you hand your child a pushka on an erev? To get them out of your house? Please don’t send them to mine! I don’t want to be your child’s babysitter! Frustrated

AN URGENT PLEA

You have touched upon and brought awareness to many aspects of our beautiful community. (In fact, I can’t seem to remember how we managed without our weekly treat that’s so professional, informative, and entertaining without compromising our standards!) Please print my message. I have yet to find a person that doesn’t know of at least one acquaintance afflicted with the dreaded disease, and I am dedicating this time that I took out of my cleaning frenzy as a zchus for four cholim that I know personally (among them two young children) to spread this important message. Dear sisters, a terrible trend has entered our midst! I see such sweet, eidel young wives who wear such eye-catching shaitels, in style, length, and choice of coverings. The yetzer horah is so cunning, catching such refined and modest women unawares. Let us take small baby steps to chase away the immodest styles together as a community, and may with every centimeter we cut, we cover, or we fix, may Hashem shrink every cancerous cell in Klal Yisroel by much greater measures. Let us remember that as we’re busy cleaning our homes from chometz, it is the time to clean our hearts of chometz as well. May we hear besuros tovos. B.D.

As told to: Basya Lev

A single Diamond says a lot… It says you are set in stone, and that you care to find the perfect gem to symbolize your bond. But that’s just half the story. You share a life full of twists, turns, a growing family, and special personal chapters.

My father owned a gift store that sold gifts for all occasions. He had the store for many years and had been thinking about closing the store to retire. However, his elderly father worked in the store with him and it gave Zaidy a good feeling to be active and to help his son. Eventually though, the day came that my zaidy was no longer able to help my father. Now that his reason for keeping the store open was no longer applicable, my father closed the store right before Pesach. Later, during the summer, my parents got a call from the sleepaway camp that my brother attended. He had a terrible cough and they thought he might have pneumonia. My mother told the camp to take him to the hospital right away and my parents would meet them there. In the end, it turned out my brother had Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, which is a cancer that has a high rate of survival. Throughout the year, my father was able to take my brother to his treatments on the days my mother was working, because he was no longer was tied down to the gift store. I thank Hashem that my father had already closed his store before all this happened.

The Arrival and Freedom of Pesach And so the long-awaited yom tov of Pesach has arrived, and we find ourselves preparing the last-minute ironing, cooking, errands, and all those other pesky little details. It is hectic, to say the least, but with that comes an astounding sense of accomplishment! We have worked, cleaned, shopped, cooked, run on little sleep, eaten very little or too much, and finally, we are ready to set the beautiful Seder table. You have arrived. Whether you started after Sukkos or on Rosh Chodesh Nissan, you are finally here. So, why are you here? Only because Hashem liberated our ancestors from Mitzrayim. I sometimes try to imagine how real this is. You would all have been there slaving away (and no, not like erev Pesach! Way beyond anything you can think of), and if you can fathom what it would be like to remain in Mitzrayim, that’s the only way you will experience the true sense of the word “freedom.” Granted, you can only feel free if you have been enslaved. You can only appreciate where you are now if you have worked very hard for Pesach, or for any project that you’ve put your heart and soul into — you know the feeling. You know it from many different things you have worked for in life, and then appreciated the results and enjoyed the work you have done. With that, I believe “eating healthy” and “eating smart” are well worth the effort, but the freedom that comes from feeling more energetic, healthier, and skinnier is something you only know if you have actually experienced it. Some people tell me they wish there was a magic potion that would allow them to wake up 30 pounds lighter. But the truth is, that if there really were something like that, the

The freedom of knowing that you can trust yourself day in and day out to follow a smart food plan cannot be achieved overnight!

sense of accomplishment we gain from making a conscious effort to take care of ourselves wouldn’t exist. Would people even be any happier? A major source of your satisfaction is the very act of making an effort to exercise, prepare fat-burning meals, and eat healthy foods. The freedom of knowing that you can trust yourself day in and day out to follow a smart food plan cannot be achieved overnight! You need to work for it, and it takes time. Nobody can exercise for you, nor can anyone eat healthy for you. You must do it yourself to get the results you like. So, now that you have a little more time on your hands on yom tov, it’s a good idea to read through these motivational quotes as many times as you can before you get bored. This way, by the time Pesach is over, you won’t have to cry over the extra potato weight, and you will be motivated to continue making powerful changes that will “free” you from the wrath of unhealthy eating.

MOTIVATIONAL QUOTES: • A huge part of losing weight is trusting that you can. And you can! • Losing weight can be hard, maintaining your weight can be hard, and staying overweight can be hard. Choose your hard. • When you feel like quitting, think about why you started in the first place. • I’m not “losing weight.” I’m “getting rid” of it! I have no intention of finding it

Health & Wellness

again! • Your diet is like a bank account. Good food choices are good investments. • Don’t let someone who gave up on their dreams talk you out of yours! • Success is a series of small efforts repeated day in and day out. • Success is not final, nor is failure. It is the courage to get up and continue that counts! • Motivation is what gets you started, while habits are what keep you going. • If you were to trip and fall, you wouldn’t stay on the ground crawling around just because you fell. If you trip and fall off your food plan, don’t crawl around;

get up and continue! • Winners are not the people who never fail; they are the people who never give up! • Don’t be upset about the results you didn’t get for the work you didn’t do. • With every new moment comes new strength. • When you motivate your mind, your body will follow. • Your body can stand up to almost anything; it’s your mind that needs convincing. • It’s not that some people have willpower and others don’t. It’s that some people are ready to change and some are not! • The bad news is that time flies, but the good news is that you’re the pilot!

• Time will pass regardless; you can either lose weight, stay the same weight, gain weight or go around in circles. • Don’t put in just half the effort unless you’re okay with half the results. Reread these quotes at least six times over yom tov, and feel the impact they will have on your choices. Wishing you all a kosher, freilichen, healthy yom tov! I’ll see you again after Pesach!

Nature Therapy In our fast-paced world and uber-hectic lives we are all suffering from "nature-deficit disorder". There is a huge body of research indicating that more exposure to nature can give us a sense of clarity of mind releasing emotional and existential confusion as well as reduce blood pressure, stress, anxiety, depression, anger, and even attention-deficit symptoms.

Let us join together in a safe place in nature and restore the peace in our lives that we and our families deserve.

“So, Yossi, how are you and Hindy coming along with your Pesach preparations? Mommy and I sure are going to miss you and the kids this year.” “We’re pretty much on track, Tatty. Considering that this is the first year we’re making Pesach at home, Hindy is surprisingly calm. But... Well... I’m kind of nervous.” “That’s to be expected; this is your first time leading the Seder, after all.” “True, but I think it’s more than that. Tatty, I can tell you what’s in my heart. I think the issue is a little deeper. You know that I went through a few years of, well — struggle — and that, b’chasdei Hashem, I’m back on track now. I feel a little uncomfortable leading the seder.” “Yes, you’ve really taken charge of your Yiddishkeit, and you’re growing by leaps and bounds now. We’re all so very proud of you for how you’ve turned your life around. But why should that be a problem? I thought Pesach would have an even deeper meaning for you than for someone who didn’t go through a period of darkness like you did. You really ‘freed’ yourself, so to speak.” “Everything you’re saying is true, Tatty, but that’s exactly the problem. I identify very strongly with the story of yetzias Mitzrayim, and I want to give over these feelings to Hindy and the kids, but I’m afraid they won’t take me seriously. I’m afraid that if I get too passionate at the Seder, they’ll think I’m... Well, they’ll think I’m a bit of a hypocrite, considering where I was just a few years ago.” “Yossi, this isn’t a problem at all — just the opposite! The Yidden who left Mitzrayim were on the forty-ninth level of tumah! If they would have been afraid to look like hypocrites, we wouldn’t be here today to have a seder.”

“Wow, Tatty, I never thought of it like that. I really do see your point, but I don’t see how it applies to me. I can’t really take credit for turning my life around — Rabbi Levy gets all the credit. He mamash saved me.” “Yossi, listen to me closely. Not only do you deserve the credit, but you’ve just proven even more that you really do represent the story of yetzias Mitzrayim. Hashem sent Rabbi Levy to help you - and boy did he help you — but Rabbi Levy couldn’t save you. You had to save yourself. Rabbi Levy just showed you how. “Likewise, Hashem sent Moshe Rabbeinu to help Klal Yisroel. But guess what? Moshe couldn’t save us. When we arrived at the Yam Suf, we were trapped. The sea was raging on one side, and the Mitzriyim were closing in on us. Moshe davened for us, and Hashem told him to tell us to go forward. One man — Nachshon ben Aminadav — took the risk. He walked into the sea up to his neck, and then the sea split. But Moshe couldn’t do that for us. We had to do it for ourselves.” Yossi’s father paused to allow this point to sink in. Then he continued, “The Ohr HaChaim HaKadosh brings an amazing Zohar on this. When Moshe davened for Klal Yisrael, Hashem answered that He cannot save us, that even the middas harachamim would not be enough to save us! We were too much assimilated into Egyptian culture. The only way we could be saved is if we would literally throw ourselves into the sea, trusting that we would be saved. And we did. It was our bitachon that saved us. “So you see, Yossi, Hashem sends us leaders to guide us, like Moshe Rabbeinu. Or Rabbi Levy, in your case. But it’s up to us to take their guidance and turn it into action. That’s what

you did, Yossi — that’s what you did! So you see, nobody could give over the message of yetzias Mitzrayim to your family better than you, because of your flaws and imperfections, not in spite of them.” “Okay, Tatty, I accept what you’re saying, and the story of yetzias Mitzrayim has even more meaning to me now than ever. You can see it, and you helped me see it, but Tatty — my children might not see it. I still worry that they might mot be open to hearing the message of yetzias Mitzrayim coming from me. I don’t know... maybe it would be better if we came to you for the sedarim?” “No, Yossi — davka you. The Nesivos Shalom describes a segulah which he bases on the Rambam. He says that there is a special segulah for emu-

It is a mitzvah d’Oraisa to tell our children the story of yetzias Mitzrayim on the fifteenth of Nissan, as it says, “V’higad’ta l’vincha bayom hahu…” “And you shall tell your son on that day...” (Shemos 13:8) The story of yetzias Mitzrayim took place 3,328 years ago, and has been repeated every year for the past 3,327 years, passing from generation to generation like a precious heirloom. Not only is it a mitzvah to tell the story of yetzias Mitzrayim, but doing so is the means through which Hashem chose that our mesorah should be handed down. As we sit at our seder table, we should reflect upon the amazing fact that more than 125 generations have passed down this mesorah to us. What a privilege and an honor it truly is to be the carriers of Hashem’s

You’re their father, Yossi, not me. I understand your fears, I really do. But don’t take Hashem out of the picture. Hashem gave you this mitzvah, and He will help you to be matzliach as long as you try. “Leading your seder might feel like walking into the sea up to your neck, Yossi, but trust Hashem to split the sea for you. The message will go into your children’s hearts. Trust me. Now, go on and give your family a seder to remember!” Through his tears, Yossi answered, “Thank you, Tatty. Thank you so much. I’m going to do just that.”

message. This precious gift has been entrusted to us, and it is incumbent upon us to ensure its safe transmission to the next generation. If any of our ancestors had failed to give over this lesson — perhaps because they felt they were unfit to do so, as in Yossi’s case — we might not be here today to tell it over to our own children. Likewise, if we fail to impart this foundational story to our children, we risk losing our doros. This is our mesorah, and we must personally convey it to the next generation. May we all have beautiful sedarim with our families and children together, and hopefully still eat the korban Pesach this year in Yerushalayim Ir HaKodesh together with Moshiach.

T The thought never entered Moshe’s mind that his longawaited trip would be pulled away from under him. On Motzei Shabbos, the night before this major event, as he was gathering the last few articles into his suitcase, he suddenly felt he was spiking a fever. As a cancer patient, that meant a definite admission to the hospital. With a prayer on his lips and no recourse, he was forced to make that trip to Urgent Care in Memorial. Blood was drawn, and cultures were taken. With each passing hour, his hopes for making it to his upcoming trip early Sunday morning dwindled. By 4:00am, he was officially admitted. The trip was officially off! When the door of his hospital room opened at 7:00 am, accompanied by a cheery “good morning”, Moshe nor his mother were in any mood to return the greeting! It

Dr.

Marcus, and Stacy, his nurse. “So, Moshe, how would you like to fly off to California and still join the rest of your group? If you’re interested, I can make that happen.” Moshe looked at his mother, who looked right back at him. “Let’s go for it,” they cried in unison. With much siyatta d'Shmaya, they managed to make it back to Brooklyn for Moshe’s luggage, and then sped off to JFK to make the flight in record time. Things were finally beginning to look up. Sunday afternoon, soon after he landed on the West Coast, his mother got a phone call on her cell. The ID read Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. The monotone voice on the other end of the line informed her that one of the cul-

tures came back positive, and that Moshe must be brought back to Memorial immediately to begin a course of antibiotic treatment. She reacted in horror. “There’s no way I can do this to him. He just landed and his fun is only beginning!” The doctor accompanying the group gave his word that he would stall for time, and try to stretch his return flight for Monday evening. When Frumy Horowitz, founder of Bein Ish UBein Uchiv organization, got wind of the unfolding drama she swung right into action. Her heart could not handle this bochers’ disappointment. She wanted to make his return a trip to remember! She ordered a white stretch limo and a singing superstar that Moshe was enamored with and a few of Moshe’s good friends. She had them drive out with Moshe’s mother to pick him up from the airport. As soon as Moshe exited the terminal, the singer serenaded him with a personalized Welcome Back song, as the

beat of the music pulsated in the background. All eyes were on Moshe. The shock and thousand watt, beaming smile radiating from his face will be forever etched in the memories of all those accompanying this spirited troupe. Moshe’s gratitude knew no bounds. When he was pitied the next morning by the hospital staff his reaction was, “Don’t feel sorry for me; one and a half days of sheer bliss is more than no days at all, plus the extravagant entourage and welcome

SPECIAL DELIVERY Lugging home 12 ½ kilo (thirty pounds) of fish erev Pesach is not the easiest job for a savta like me. Nevertheless, that was the task I faced and I had to decide just how I could “carry” it out. I could splurge on a taxi, but I knew that at six o’clock on a Thursday evening, cabs were few and far between in this out-of-the-way area and highly unlikely to be cruising by at the spot I needed. Well, I said to myself, if Hashem wants, He will send me a taxi. I must confess, this was not really my style of thinking. In our days, while we most certainly had complete faith in

have parnassa/good health/ top-notch shidduchim for the kids etc., He has many ways of providing it. All I need is a bit of hishtadlus,” goes the reasoning. And the surprising thing is, it works. So I decided, at my late age, maybe it will work for me, too. I stood on the busy corner in the Hadar section of Haifa, waiting for a taxi. Waiting. And waiting. “I’ll give it ten minutes and then give up,” I said to myself. All of a sudden, Zahava, who lived in my neighborhood, passed by in her car and gave me a friendly wave. As I raised my hand in the inimitable Israeli signal that means “just a

minute,” she slowed down to stop and in I went. “I always slow down when I see acquaintances, in case they want a lift,” she said, “but standing there with your big tote bag, I thought you were on your way out of town.” How was she to know that I was on my way home with a suitcase filled with

fish? Knowing her route home, I knew I was in luck, happily anticipating being left off not far from my building. Just as I finished thanking her again for being the gutte shaliach, she made a sharp turn up the cul-de-sac right in front of my house. “I guess Hashem wanted you to get a lift right up to your house,” she said. “And how!” I thought. Gratefully, I clambered out of her car. All that was left was for me to walk down some steps… and then up 54 stairs to the third floor! Nope, no elevator! With a sigh, I began the walk down towards the building entrance, when out of the blue, I saw one of my Russian neighbors suddenly coming towards me. “Can I help you?” he politely inquired. “Yes, you can!” I replied, handing him the package with a smile. “That’s what neighbors are for,” he remarked with a grin — or was it with a groan? — as he schlepped the fish up the three flights. And that is what relying on Hashem is all about, I thought, as I entered my door, full of spring and pep. No, the fish man didn’t deliver… but Hashem certainly did! Following a colorful career in public relations/fundraising, Laya translated several books most recently a biography for teens on Rebbetzin Batsheva Kanievsky, “The Rebbetzin Loved Me!” followed by “Rav Elyashiv”. Recap: The house is shown to prospective buyers and Sara feels increasingly inundated and exposed. Elimelech guides her away from focusing on the house and toward a more pressing concern, Chaim Elazar.

Chaim Elazar sat in his dorm room, at the very edge of his bed. Go to sleep, he urged his own self. It’s late already, and tomorrow the early minyan is at seven. Pre-minyan learning at six thirty. So we want to wake up at five thirty, to make a little headway. He was making such slow, lumbering progress in his goals. Finishing Shas was so far away. It was true, he’d learned that it wasn’t about finishing, it was about the process, about limud haTorah. The effort, the sheer muscle building effort of waking up, chipping away, one amud at a time, was worth the challenge, worth the mind-numbing fatigue, the loneliness. He was so lonely. Why did the other boys focus on such shtusim? There wasn’t one, not even one boy with whom he could share his love for learning. They all admired him, respected him, approached him with learning questions. But there wasn’t one among them with whom he could sit under a tree and immerse himself in the words of a sefer. He needed to go to sleep. The only thing was, his body was so tense, so wound up, his feet jutting out and away from himself, ready to rise, ready to conquer, that he couldn’t fall asleep. It was past bedtime. The other boys had read, listened to phone lines, schmoozed a little, and were now snoring peacefully on their pillows. Only he sat at the edge of his bed, his insides roiling. Go to sleep! But he couldn’t, he really couldn’t. Alternatively, he could skip it for tonight. This new plan energized him. He threw on his clothes. The mashgiach had left about an hour ago, so Chaim Elazar padded into the kitchen, brewed himself a tea. Then he went out to the backyard of the yeshivah. He looked up at the beautiful sky. It was numbered with beautiful dots of light. Pesukim rushed to his head, about Creation, about the wonders of This World. He opened his sefer, and under his flashlight’s beam, he made his way through the words until… he was so… tired… Jose Ortega was walking home from a party. The world was literally throwing stars at him, and looking up at the beautiful purple and gold sky, he felt how

big he was, how small the world was, and how huge possibilities are. He had drunk quite a few beers, was still clutching a half-empty can, and now that he had the entire world to himself, he took a detour through backyards of sleeping people. But in one backyard, at a small rickety table, sat one of those boys with the white shirts and strings. The boy’s head was resting on a book and a flashlight peeked out from almost underneath his nose. Jose muttered under his breath. The boy didn’t stir. Jose tossed the beer can at him. The boy shifted but did not awaken. I wonder what would happen if I did something to this guy, Jose wondered.

In her new kitchen, Goldy Friedman looked out the window above her kitchen sink, and saw the stars. Around her feet were neatly piled and labeled boxes, all still needing to be unpacked before tonight was over, whatever “tonight” meant when it was already three in the morning. How difficult it had been to manage the allocated space back in Williamsburg. She had needed to hone her organizational skills to needle-point precision so her cabinets wouldn’t look like Bailu’s, rachmana litzlan. In the cramped spaces of a Williamsburg kitchen, her sister Bailu always had crisp

rice cereal creeping out of the bottom slits of her cereal boxes, spare change rolling around in her paper drawer, pots piled into each other, which fell and clanged every time she was going to make farfel. Goldy had promised herself, even as a kallah, that such mismanagement would never occur to her. She purchased Tupperware and matching accessories and pretty solutions for her counters. And now, when her second was born — and small, plastic baby spoons and fine embroidered bibs overcrowded the kitchen space — she needed to move. Here she was. There were enough cabinets — fine, wooden and framed to dance inside of them. She’d need to stock up on Tupperware. The Container Store, they said, had very good options as well, now that she could start buying in bulk. There was a Costco not too far from here, her friend Henchy had offered. Oh, the freedom. Initially, moving from Williamsburg had seemed so passé, so weak. Nebby, even. But some of her friends had done it, not the real “it” girls, but she could always be a first. Plus, she needed all this, the space, the space, the floors to dance on. And she would have a good life. Not too far from the city, super close to some very good shopping, and

with some eateries that rivaled Williamsburg. It was bound to be okay. Plus, there was Ari’s promotion if he took over operations in Newburg. Life was good. Normally industrious, the next morning she was still dreamy. She should make herself a coffee. But first she needed to unpack. Maybe order lunch if she couldn’t quickly make one for herself, hmmm? The house next door was tiny and disheveled. It was old. Goldy shuddered. On the roof, dotted with green — was that moss?!— squirrels were having a dance festival. They ran across its length, disappearing under the drainpipes … did they go inside? Another shudder. That house was really unpleasant. Its sides were covered in army green shingles, the type that, she had once heard, is full of dangerous lead and breeds cancer, rachmana litzlan. Wires twisted on its outer walls like thick garden snakes. The windows were small, its frames cracked. “That’s what I hate about Monsey,” Goldy said. She wondered who lived next door. On her side of the chain-link fence, the grass was fresh, carpeted, and manicured. She had made sure, before she signed, that maintenance would be a feature of sharing a house with all the other buyers. So far, things were coming along nicely. Her storage area was laid out neatly with bikes, her three strollers — the double, the travel, and the Bugaboo — and her

The house next door was strewn with bikes, and the garden hose lay, unraveled, on the side of the house. I hope I don’t run into those people too often, she thought, bitter at having to share a neighboring property with such unkempt people. She slit open her milchig box with an X-acto knife as she hesitated if she should call Hava Java or Crave Canteen, because her Moved to Monsey group had argued and finally come to a consensus that those two establishments had the best salmon. She covered the shelves of her milchig cabinets with white and blue liners. Industriously, she measured spaces with a yellow tape measure and set down her housewares accordingly. She never saw Sara looking up at the third-floor window, noting it was already covered in blinds, and wondering who had bought there in the end. To be continued...

BUBBY’S ROITEH POTATOES

By: J. Mesch

If you think a potato is just a spud Unglamorous as mud Pedestrian, ordinary Fuddy Dud... Heat up oil in a good-sized kettle Dice some onions to test your mettle And when you’ve got a heaping mound Let them cook until they’ve browned Now peel your spuds and slice them silly Then dump them in, Just willy nilly Add some water, ready heated And sparingly, add more as needed Then paprika, a few good shakes And salt, to taste, is all it takes. Stir and scrape from time to time Until it’s done: Les Spuds Sublime. 90 / T HE MONS E Y V IE W

Hi,

everybody! No matter at what time our Seder ends, everyone I ask always ends later. It’s a major competition in this world of ours. Last year’s conversation: “Gut Yom Tov Ratzy! Boy, you look tired. What time did you finish last night?” “Hi, Sara! What time did you finish?” “2:45 am.” “Oh, we finished 3:10.” Me: “Come to think of it, at 3:17 we were still singing Hallel. Yeah, we were done at 3:43.” Ratzy: “Oh, yeah, right. Hallel. We didn’t see our beds till 4:30.” Me: “Beds? Hah! Not before five.” Let’s just say at the end of the conversation, neither Ratzy or myself, nor the 10 other women that joined the conversation, slept anything at all, because amazingly enough the meal kept on stretching by everyone’s added half hour. I wouldn’t mind finishing at a decent hour, but what will my kids say when their friends boast about watching sunrise with Eliyahu Hanavi? Shoin! Some compete with this, others while playing machanayim. Which brings me to my Chol HaMoed offering to you ladies. Machanayim day out! The best way to compete and still

finish before sunrise. Drop a line if you want to join. I’m emptying my dining room in honor of the competition. Eggs and apple juice will be served. Having a competitive nature is very growth oriented if used in the proper way. Grownups ducking a flying ball definitely qualify. Seder Night! While every ad projects a set table gleaming with silver and smiling, happy children, we Yiddishe mamas project a different sort of gleam. We’re up from dawn, doing lastminute cooking, shopping, and cleaning, so we’re just happy to be sitting at the moment and trying to keep little Shmilly from spilling his grape juice on his new adorable mini-kittel. If you want to stay awake for the duration of the Haggadah and tell everyone you finished your seder at 5:52 am, let’s try some simple tips: There isn’t anything new in the next few lines you’ll be reading. No earth-shattering research done by a famous scientist, which in this case, is me. Nothing that you haven’t heard

before. But. If you read it and follow through — then it will be earth shattering. A calm erev yom tov day starts with the night before. Go to bed early. Yeah, right. You’re giggling right now. Listen, I’m just telling you what works. Although when I’ll start listening to my own advice, I’ll be much better off. An early night will give you an early morning. Not super early. I find an hour or so before the rest of the house awakens will give you a great headstart. Ask Hashem for extra siyata d’Shmaya that the washing machine should not break today (happened to my classmate) and the freezer should not stop humming (happened to my neighbor). The oven should not stop giving out heavenly aromas (happened to my sister-in-law). The toilet should not get clogged because of the 60 baby wipes your little imp stuffed down the bowl. (Okay, that happened to me.) Eat a solid breakfast (quit laughing). Eat chocolate. Okay, that I

made up, but I promise it works better than any other advice I’ve ever offered. The night before, I prepare food in large ziplock bags. Each member of the family gets his or her own bag with sandwiches, fruit, a water bottle, a box drink and a few snacks to tide them over until I serve them a proper meal. I don’t remember when I started doing this, but it’s oh so awesome. If someone offers you help, however minimal, grab it before they change their mind. Open the packages of tights and socks and take the tags off of new clothing. Iron the night before and make sure all the hems and mending are done. Lay out the clothing for the kids, so they don’t ask you, “Ma, where are my socks, headband, tights, robe top, shell, shoes, skirt, sweater, kappel...” when you’re downstairs frying the lukshen. The little ones should definitely have a nap. While the big one (you) won’t join them for the nap, the next two hours you can actually sneak a quick peek at The Monsey View while trying out one of their recipes to per-

If you have teens swarming around your kitchen wanting to help, (I repeat: wanting) send the little ones to the park with them. Don’t stress! I’m telling you, it doesn’t pay. I mentioned this already once before and you might’ve heard it from your friend neighbor or table can be set early, even if a shvigger, but everyone around cooking marathon is still going town will be tzinding licht the on in your kitchen. same time. It works well if you’re trying to refill your wallets after emptying it out for yom tov. When you think of potatoes, do you think of Russet? There are actually thousands of potato varieties grown around the world.

Your spud speaks Chinese. Not really, but he may have been born in China. If by any chance you DO hear your spud speak, please seek medical help immediately! China is the leading producer of potatoes (along with just about everything else).

Potato chips are one of the most popular snack items, despite concerns over the high fat and salt contents. Billions of potato chip bags are sold every year. Especially Pesach time?

Back in the mid-1800s, roughly two-thirds of Ireland’s population relied on the potato as the mainstay of their diet. And then arrived Potato Blight, the malach hamaves of Mr. Spud. Potato crops rotted away and plunged Ireland into the Great Famine. More than one million people succumbed to starvation, and roughly another million left the country in the search of food. A quarter of the population disappeared from Ireland due to the lack of potatoes.

The potato chip came about as a result of an upset customer who returned his portion of potatoes to the kitchen because they were too thick. The chef decided to “show” the customer and sliced potatoes paper-thin, fried them, and sprinkled them with salt. Surprisingly, the dish became a huge hit, and we all know where it went from there!

In 1995, NASA astronauts planted the first vegetable, a potato, in space.

DR. TUBER •

Ever imagined yourself lugging home a bag of gold from the grocery? No? Me neither. But if you lived during the Alaskan Klondike gold rush, your potatoes would be nearly worth their weight in gold. When winter hit, the miners would be locked into the wilderness with little food and nutrients and often be hit with scurvy, a disease caused by lack of vitamin C. The cure? Potatoes, high in that very vitamin!

Potatoes can be used to stop burns from penetrating deeper into the flesh. Just shred a potato and place liberally over a burn and cover with plastic wrap. You’ll see steam coming out as the burning power is transferred from the flesh and into the potato! If you are worried that the burn is serious, however, call Hatzolah first!

In 2010, the executive director of the Washington State Potato Commission set out to prove that the mighty spud is quite the well-rounded vegetable. He committed to a 60-day potatoonly diet, consuming roughly 14 potatoes every day! In the end, he lost more than 20 pounds and gained a lot more: his previously high cholesterol, glucose, and triglyceride levels dropped tremendously!

Potatoes are from the nightshade family which includes vegetables like tomatoes and eggplants, as well as tobacco. Throughout history, the nightshades were feared as poisonous foods, and avoided at all costs. Nowadays, many people consume these foods regularly with no ill effects, although allergies and eczema are many times exacerbated by them.

MR. POTATO HEAD

KNOW

YOUR

LINGO Spud: A common nickname for “potato.” Tuber: A thickened, edible stem that is capable of budding and bearing new growth from the buds.

Mr. Potato Head had a rough start on his way to becoming famous. Not only did his humble roots begin as a real vegetable, American citizens disapproved greatly of the baal tashchis the Mr. Potato Head toy promoted. You see, in the 1940s, the Great Depression was a very recent memory for most people, and yet Mr. Potato Head was originally sold as simple pushpin facial features for children to impale vegetables with. The kids would grab a vegetable and insert the parts during pretend play. That didn’t sit well with many people, since the vegetable could become damaged beyond use. In addition, the small, sharp parts were cutting children and causing kids to choke. For safety reasons the dimensions of accessories increased and a plastic potato body was added to the package, resulting in a win-win situation for everyone and the terrific tuber toy you’ve come to love!

FREEDOM FOR MO MO Coming to terms with my son’s illness was one of the hardest things I’ve ever done, and I’ve done quite a lot of hard things in my life. I guess it was the combination of hopelessness I felt for the moment, and the concern I felt over what the future would bring that made me feel as if I’d already been through the wringer at the very beginning of our journey with FPIES. Now you’re probably wondering what FPIES is, and don’t worry — you aren’t the only one. Very few people in the world actually know what it is, and many times children can go undiagnosed for years, as their poor bodies suffer inflammation, pain, and failure to thrive. FPIES stands for Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome, and it’s every mother’s nightmare. It the thing that turns the joyous occasion of baby’s first food into the horrific event of fighting for your child’s life. It’s the heart-stopping moments of holding your child’s blue, limp body in your hands with tears streaming down your face, and not knowing what to do. It’s the ambulance ride to the hospital, the turning of your child into a pincushion because repeated attempts to secure an IV line fail due to rapid and severe dehydration that causes collapsed veins, and it’s the pitiful lethargy of your sweet babe. It’s knowing that even in the ER, nobody knows what your child is suffering through, and only you, yourself, can call the shots on how to treat your child. FPIES: it’s a rare form of allergy, largely characterized by severe, prolonged, and delayed vomiting reactions that can sometimes result in shock. And my son had it. His FPIES first

showed up one week after the introduction of rice cereal, his first food. Oh, how he vomited! Every five minutes for the next hour and half his poor little 6 month-old tummy violently retched. But even that reaction was nothing compared to when we tried chicken. After a few licks of chicken soup, he

was already talking in full sentences… I’m not going to tell you how I felt guilty when I sat down to supper and his big blue eyes took in everyone else’s meal, while he ate his same old avocado sandwich. And of course, I won’t tell you that I wiped away tears when I saw little babies munching on regu-

His big blue eyes took in everyone else’s meal, while he ate his same old avocado sandwich. almost died. Unable to make eye-contact, his little head lolled to the side as he slipped in and out of consciousness. And pear? Well, that was a three day “vacation” at the Hotel of Westchester. Four little bites meant 20 hours of vomiting, a dangerously low blood sugar level of 47, and one very upset little tummy. By the time he was one and half years old, my little one was only able to eat a few foods. By two, we had added but a few more. Thankfully, wheat was on the list and he had an avocado sandwich everyday for breakfast, lunch, and supper. EVERY DAY. EVERY MEAL. While other kids his age were eating everything in the grocery store, my little Mo Mo took only his bag of pretzels for snack on a daily basis. Thankfully, he didn’t complain, and never tried to take food from anyone — but I saw the look in his eyes; the yearning to taste, to be the same as the other children, coupled with the intense fear of suffering a reaction. Frankly, he was terrified. I’m not going to tell you how often I cried that my baby boy was able to fit into a size 9-month stretchie when he

lar Shabbos fare, while my twoyear-old just ate his sandwich… What I will tell you is about the miracle we experienced last Pesach. Oh yes, that I will tell you, because it’s something that’s truly worthy to be told. You see, chicken was the very worst food of all. Even traces of chicken sent my Mo Mo into fits of violent vomiting; the merest taste of chicken juice threw his body into turmoil. I was terrified for over two years and kept his food far away from that evil bird. I became a fanatical handwasher whenever chicken was on the menu, which was nearly every night — due to the fish, egg, milk, beef and peanut allergies that also run in our family. And then we went away for Pesach. When I say that we went “away” for Pesach, I don’t mean that we booked a fancy catered hotel, I mean that we went to the frummest family I know for the entire week of Pesach and ate all of our meals there. Somehow, when booking our reservation and packing our bags I forgot their minhag to use only schmaltz. And I don’t mean just for frying, I mean schmaltz is used in everything, even in the Shabbos eggs!

It was only about an hour to the zman when I realized that nearly all of the food would be laced with that evil bird — the one that could hurt my Mo Mo. It would have been fine if he had been still eating only avocado at that point, but boruch Hashem, the last several months we’d added in a few more safe foods, like potato kugel and tuna, which he really enjoyed. Panicking, I realized

people I mean, the ones that are completely klei kodesh; their every breath devoted to avodas Hashem. After 24 hours of witnessing this pitiful scene, Rebitzin Klei Kodesh herself walked over and told us to try giving

We won’t describe the scene of a hungry little boy surrounded by mounds of steaming kugel, unable to understand why his parents won’t serve him from his favorite food. that he would have to subsist on plain boiled potatoes, eggs, avocado, and hard crunchy matzah while everyone else enjoyed multiple courses of soup, falshe fish, chicken, and schmaltzy eggs. Worst however, was the fact that he wouldn’t be able to have the one true delicacy he craved: potato kugel. For instead of oil, the potatoes and eggs were mixed with schmaltz. Again, we’re not gonna talk about tears… (this time his!). We won’t describe the scene of a hungry little boy surrounded by mounds of steaming kugel, unable to understand why his parents won’t serve him from his favorite food. No siree, we won’t get into the heartbreak of a child’s pitiful begging for something so simple as food… What we will say is what transpired after a full 24 hours of broken hearts and one hungry tummy. So you see, the place we were staying wasn’t just an ordinary home, it is the home of an extremely chosheve, heiliger family. You know the type of

Mo Mo a piece of the potato kugel. We had his medication on hand, just in case of a reaction, and she was so sure that in the zechus of the mitzvah of matzah he’d been cured. Now we just had to take the jump; after all, we’d already eaten the Bread of Faith for 24 hours! With trembling hands, (and even more of a tremble in our hearts) we allowed Mo Mo to take a bite of his dearest desire. And another and another. Hours later there was still no sign of a reaction. By the end of Pesach our Mr. Mo Mo was enjoying chicken soup and falshe fish with the rest of them. Boruch Hashem, he’s almost completely outgrown his FPIES and eats nearly everything these days. And that 9-month stretchie? It’s been exchanged for re g u l a r - s i z e d

clothing for a three-yearold, exactly what my peyos yingel needs. Now, I’m going to give you exactly one guess where we’ll be spending Pesach this year... Yup, we’re already packing our bags to return to the place where we experienced a miracle last year. This year, however, Mo Mo will be able to eat everything, and we’ll be making a seudah haduah. We’ll be celebrating our freedom from FPIES. AUTHOR’S NOTE: Attempting a food challenge without medical supervision is not recommended in the case of regular allergies at all! Ever! Even in the case of FPIES (which is always a delayed reaction), please consult your doctor first, and be very experienced in your child’s condition and treatment.

Educating Kids Nowadays: More Than Just Teaching Crossing Safety We are all involved parents. We seek the best for our kids. We forgo our own comfort, sleep, and health to ensure that they are well prepped and educated to lead productive lives. We teach them survival skills, social skills, table manners, and so much more. We provide them with a solid and thorough education. But do we prepare them for life? Life. A labyrinth of choices. Life. A maze of successes and failures.

and the world of business revolve around credit. And after all, parents are obligated to prepare their kids for life. “When researching the ins and outs of credit, I realized the natural need for credit and the dearth of knowledge out there,” says the CEO of Goldmine. “People are misinformed and have a skewed view about this important subject matter.” Credit: You and I have a natural need for it. 56% of the population is suffering from bad or inferior credit. We do our best. But life nowadays is so much more intense and complicated than the life of our youth. Our mothers taught us: Beware when crossing streets. Do not talk with strangers. Brush your teeth. Believe in your potential. Do what’s right. And it worked. BE SMART. ACCESS YOUR CREDIT POWER.

If you are a CEO of a bank or the heir to an inheritance of several millions, you can disregard this article. For the rest of us, the need for credit is becoming more and more crucial. ness. It will make you fasten your seatbelts and drive with caution. It will transform you into a vigilant and law-abiding driver. You will refrain from driving when tired or in bad and inclement weather. Let’s divert and explore the data of people struggling with bad credit. After a comprehensive data analysis, The CFED, the Corporation for Enterprise Development, has concluded that contrary to the lucky 44% that have excellent credit and can take advantage of extremely low interest and mortgage rates, 56% of consumers cannot benefit from the recordlow mortgage rates that are due to the improved economy. This is because their credit scores are rated as sub-prime credit score. To summarize, 56% of the population is suffering from bad or inferior credit. On the flip side of the coin, studies have founded that chances for excellent credit are far better for people who make educated decisions when utilizing and handling their credit. (Their chance for bad or inferior credit is a scarce 10 to 15%) Life needs credit as Life needs transportation. Credit is a critical and unavoidable

outgrowth of financial handlings. It is a definitive mean for obtaining goods and services. But yes, it requires caution, responsibility, level headedness, and a good dose of awareness. In the words of a Goldmine advisor, “I understand the pitfalls of credit and the successes of credit. I am also aware of the necessity for credit. I have spent hours of research, delving into this subject matter. My goal now is to share this knowledge and educate the masses.”

Why Do I Need Credit? Perhaps you are relegating this information to the back of your mind with the reasoning of, “Credit is not for people of my caliber, Thank You Very Much.” Perhaps you are patting yourself on the back and saying: “I have amazing business ideas. If I ever consider launching an enterprise, it will surely succeed.” Or: “When I want to lease a car, people will trust me due to my sterling character.” Perhaps:“I will never buy a house on mortgage.” But let’s face reality. If you are the CEO of a bank or

the heir to an inheritance of several millions, you can disregard this article. For the rest of us, the need for credit is becoming more and more crucial. Why? Think: Startup capital, credit history etc. And regretfully, it is nearly impossible to buy a house without a mortgage. Welcome to the global world of 2016. Imagine waiting in a grocery line for an hour. Just before you reach the cashier, the line closes. Or consider calling a bureaucratic office with an important request to hear a message that they are closed for the coming two weeks due to a holiday. Disappointment and frustration will surely make you into a bundle of nerves. Let’s put ourselves on the pedestal. Let’s visualize that we have developed a brainstorm of a business idea, accumulated monies to use as a down payment for a dream home, or that we have an urge to lease a car. Would we want to have the door to opportunity slam in our face? Would we want the banks to say, “Good day to you. Who are you, John Doe? A fictional character? A bogus individual? How should we believe you anyways?” In today’s world a person needs credibility. But you need good credibility. That’s why we need to be educated and handle our finances responsibly.

Current position: Chairman and President, The Trump Organization D o n ald John Trump is an American businessman, politician, m e d i a personality, and author. He is the chairman and president of The Trump Organization, as well as the founder of the gaming and hotel enterprise Trump Entertainment Resorts. Trump was born on June 14, 1946 in Queens, NY and is a son of real estate developer Fred Trump. While attending the Wharton School of Business, Trump worked for his father’s firm, Elizabeth Trump & Son. Upon graduating from college in 1968, he joined the company, and in 1971 was given control, later renaming the company The Trump Organization. Since then, Trump has built casinos, golf courses, hotels, and other properties, many of which bear his name. Trump first campaigned for the U.S. presidency in 2000, winning two Reform Party primaries. On June 16, 2015, he again announced his candidacy for president, this time as a Republican. His campaign became known as the Counter-Establishment campaign. It has been widely opposed by the Republican Party which doubts his chances of winning the general election and fears he can cause

significant change to the image of the party. However, Trump’s candidacy has largely succeeded, partly because of free widespread media coverage, his ability to self-finance his campaign and not be reliant on super PACs, frequent endorsements, and what he and his supporters call “telling it like it is.” He has become known for his outspoken opposition to illegal immigration and free trade agreements, as well as his non-interventionist views on foreign policy, and has quickly emerged as the front-runner for the Republican nomination. As of March 23, 2016, he has won 21 contests in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries. TED CRUZ Current position: US Senator, State of Texas Rafael Edward “Ted” Cruz was born December 22, 1970 in C a l g a r y, Alberta, Canada to Eleanor Elizabeth Wilson and Rafael Cruz (his mother is a US Citizen which makes him a “natural-born citizen”). At the time, his parents had lived in Calgary for three years and were working in the oil business. Cruz attended Princeton University before attending Harvard Law School. of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit in 1995 and William Rehnquist, Chief Justice of the United States in 1996. Cruz was the first Hispanic to clerk for a Chief Justice of the United States. In 1999, Cruz joined the George W. Bush presidential campaign as a domestic policy adviser, advising then-Governor George W. Bush on a wide range of policy and legal matters. He assisted in assembling the Bush legal team, recruiting future Chief Justice John Roberts and noted attorney Mike Carvin, in the case Bush vs. Gore in both the Supreme Court of Florida and the U.S. Supreme Court during the 2000 Florida presidential recounts, leading to two wins for the Bush team. After President Bush took office, Cruz served as an associate deputy attorney general in the U.S. Justice Department and as the director of policy planning at the U.S. Federal Trade Commission. In 2003, he was appointed Texas Solicitor General, and he served in that position until 2008. He then returned to private practice until running for US Senate in 2012 and winning against great odds. As senator, his defining moment was during the government shutdown in 2013 in which he held a 21-hour long Senate Speech trying to defund the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). On March 23, 2015, he was the first of the field to announce his candidacy for the 2016 Republican Presidential Nomination. And on February 1st, in the first election of the season, he won the Iowa Caucus. His base of support has mainly been among social conservatives, though he has had crossover appeal to other factions within his party, including libertarian con-

servatives. As of April 16th, he has won 12 contests in the 2016 Republican presidential primaries. JOHN KASICH Current position: Governor, State of Ohio On May 13, 1952, John Richard Kasich was born to Anne and John Kasich in McKees Rocks, PA. His father was a mail carrier. John attended Ohio State University and graduated in 1974. He went on to work as a researcher for the Ohio Legislative Service Commission and from 1975 to 1978, he served as an administrative assistant to then-state Senator Buz Lukens. In 1978, Kasich ran for State Senate. Upon winning, he was the youngest person ever elected to Ohio State Senate. He served until 1982, when he ran for US Congress and won. He went on to be elected another eight times, winning at least 64% of the vote each time. In 2000, he did not seek re-election to Congress. Instead, in February 1999, he formed an exploratory committee to run for president. In March 1999, he announced his campaign for the Republican nomination. After very poor fundraising, he dropped out in July 1999, before the Iowa Straw Poll, and endorsed governor George W. Bush of Texas. Following the failed White House bid, he worked in the private sector, authoring three books as well as working for Fox News.

In 2009, he announced his run for the Ohio Governor’s office and won, followed by reelection in 2014. On July 21, 2015, Kasich announced his candidacy for the Republican presidential nomination during a speech at Ohio State University, his alma mater. On the campaign trail, Kasich sought

to project a sunny, optimistic message, describing himself as “the prince of light and hope.” This is a marked change in tone for Kasich, who had developed a reputation as an abrasive governor. Kasich did not win any of the first 22 primaries and caucuses, but on March 15, 2016, he came

in first place in his home state of Ohio, a winner-take-all primary for Republicans with 66 delegates at stake. He still faces a steep delegate deficit against his rival and his campaign strategy hinges on the possibility of a brokered Republican National Convention.

DEMOCRATS HILLARY CLINTON Current position: Former Arkansas First Lady, Former US First Lady, Senator, State of New York, US Secretary of State Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton was born to Hugh and Dorothy Rodham on October 26, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois. Her father managed a successful small business in the textile industry. She attended Wellesley College and graduated in 1969. Upon graduation, she entered Yale Law School. While there, she served on the editorial board of the Yale Review of Law and Social Action. After graduation, she moved to Arkansas and served in private practice for many years, focusing

on Child and Family Advocacy. In 1979, her husband Bill Clinton became governor of Arkansas which made her first lady of Arkansas. As Governor, Clinton appointed her chair of the Rural Health Advisory Committee, where she secured federal funds to expand medical facilities in Arkansas’s poorest areas without affecting doctors’ fees. She also continued in private practice up until the time her husband took office as President of the United States. As first lady, she was the first to have an office in the West Wing of the White House, in addition to the usual first lady offices in the East Wing. She was part of the innermost circle, vetting ap-

pointments to the new administration, and her choices filled at least eleven top-level positions and dozens more lower-level ones. After Eleanor Roosevelt, Clinton is regarded as the most openly empowered presidential wife in American history. Opponents used to refer derisively to the Clintons as “co-presidents.” In January 1993, President Clinton named first lady Clinton to chair a Task Force on National Health Care Reform, hoping to replicate the success she had in leading the effort for Arkansas education reform. Failing to gather enough congressional support though, the proposal was abandoned in September 1994.

In 1999, coming upon the end of her husband’s second term as president, the Clintons purchased a house in Chappaqua (Westchester), NY so she could run for the US Senate seat being vacated by long serving Senator, Daniel Patrick Moynihan. Opponents accused Clinton of carpetbagging, as she had never resided in New York nor participated in the state’s politics before the 2000 senate race. Clinton won the election on November 7, 2000 and was sworn in as United States senator on January 3, 2001, making her the first (and so far only) woman to have held an elected office either while (for a brief period) or after serving as first lady. Upon entering the Senate, Clinton maintained a low public profile and built relationships with senators from both parties. Following the September 11 attacks, Clinton sought to obtain funding for the recovery efforts in New York City and security improvements in her state. Working with New York’s senior senator Charles Schumer, she was instrumental in securing $21 billion in funding for the World Trade Center site’s redevelopment. In 2006, Clinton ran for reelection and won with 67%. On January 20, 2007, Clinton announced the formation of a presidential exploratory committee for the United States presidential election of 2008, stating “I’m in, and I’m in to win.” She led the polls throughout the first half of 2007, but ended up losing the nomination to Barack Obama. After Obama was elected president, he offered Clinton the position of Secretary of State and, even though she was

122

/ THE MONS E Y V IE W

reluctant at first, she eventually accepted it. She served as Secretary of State throughout President Obama’s first term including 2012 when, on September 11th, weeks away from the election, the US Diplomatic Mission in Libya, serving under the State Department, was attacked and the US Ambassador Christopher Stevens along with three other Americans were killed. Clinton still faces questions for that incident, as immediately following the attack, the Obama White House, along with the Clinton State Department allegedly tried covering up the terrorist nature of the attack and put forth the notion that it was a spontaneous incident as a reaction to an anti-Muslim film that was released at that time. When Clinton left the State Department, she became a private citizen for the first time in thirty years. She and her daughter joined her husband as named members of the Bill, Hillary, and Chelsea Clinton Foundation in 2013. There, she focused on early childhood development efforts. On April 12, 2015, Clinton formally announced her candidacy for the presidency in the 2016 election. She had a campaign-in-waiting already in place, including a large donor network, experienced operatives, and the Ready for Hillary and Priorities USA Action political action committees. Initially considered a prohibitive favorite to win the Democratic nomination, Clinton has faced an unexpectedly strong challenge from self-professed democratic socialist Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont, whose longtime stance against the influence of corporations and the wealthy

in American politics has resonated with a dissatisfied citizenry troubled by the effects of income inequality in the United States, which he contrasted with Clinton’s Wall Street ties. As of April 16th, she has won 20 out of the 37 contests in the 2016 Democratic presidential primaries. BERNIE SANDERS Current position: US Senator, State of Vermont Bernard “Bernie” Sanders was born on September 8, 1941 to Elias and Dorothy Sanders in Brooklyn, NY. He attended Brooklyn College from 1959 to 1960 and then transferred to the University of Chicago. He has described himself as a mediocre college student because the classroom was “boring and irrelevant,” while the community provided his most significant learning. While at the University of Chicago, Sanders joined t h e Young People’s Socialist League and was active in the Civil Rights Movement as a student organizer for the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) and the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. He attended the 1963 March on Washington where Martin Luther King, Jr. gave his “I Have a Dream” speech. That summer, he was convicted of resisting arrest during a demonstration against segregation in Chicago’s public schools and was fined $25.

In addition to his civil rights activism during the 1960s and 1970s, Sanders was active in several peace and antiwar movements. He applied for conscientious objector status during the Vietnam War; his application was eventually turned down, by which point he was too old to be drafted. Although he opposed the war, Sanders never criticized those who fought and has been a strong supporter of veterans’ benefits. After graduating from college, Sanders returned to New York City, where he initially worked in a variety of jobs, including Head Start teacher, psychiatric aide, and carpenter. In 1968, Sanders moved to Vermont, where he began his political career in 1971 as a member of the Liberty Union Party. He has said that he became interested in politics at an early age: “A guy named Adolf Hitler won an election in 1932. He won an election, and 50 million people died as a result of that election in World War II, including six million Jews. So what I learned as a little kid is that politics is, in fact, very important. He ran as the Liberty Union candidate for governor of Vermont in 1972 and 1976, and as a candidate for U.S. senator in 1972 and 1974 all of which he lost. Less than a year after the conclusion of the 1976 campaign, Sanders announced his retirement from the party. In 1980, Sanders ran for mayor of Burlington, Vermont. He ended up winning by just 10 votes with the final result coming as a shock to the local political establishment. He was re-elected three times. In 1987, U.S. News & World Report ranked Sanders as one of America’s best mayors. As of 2013, Burlington was regarded as one of

the most livable cities in the nation. In 1986, Sanders unsuccessfully ran for governor. Running as an Independent, Sanders finished in third place. In 1998, he ran for the Vermont’s at-large congressional district (because of its small population, Vermont has only one representative in the US House of Representative) as an Independent and lost. He ran again in 1990 and won with 56% of the vote. Sanders’ 1990 victory was heralded as the “First Socialist Elected” to the United States House of Representatives in decades. Sanders served in the House from 1991 until he became a senator in 2007. Sanders entered the race for the U.S. Senate on April 21, 2005. In the most expensive political campaign in Vermont’s history, Sanders defeated businessman Rich Tarrant by an approximately 2-to-1 margin. He was reelected in 2012 with 71% of the vote. Sanders announced his intention to seek the Democratic Party’s nomination for president on April 30, 2015, in an address on the Capitol lawn. His campaign was officially launched on May 26, 2015, in Burlington. In his announcement, Sanders said, “I don’t believe that the men and women who defended American democracy fought to create a situation where billionaires own the political process,” and made this a central idea throughout his campaign. Although the clear underdog, Sanders has managed to win 17 contests. His campaign has been mostly grassroots and all donations to his campaign have been private. He remains a clear second to Hillary Clinton but has continued to campaign vigorously hoping to pull out an unexpected victory at the Democratic Convention.

Life’s Journey

128 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W

By Chaya Liba Aarons

11 There’s just so long that I can escape therapy. Dr. Adler at the Child Development Center recommends speech therapy, occupational therapy, music therapy, and transferring Nachman to a special needs class. I should also add Omega 3 to his diet and schedule a series of meetings with the center’s social worker for parent support. My head swirls and it’s convenient to just crumple and discard the whole list. But good girl that I am, when the appointment calendar comes in the mail, I mark each one down. We go for an evaluation at the occupational therapist, speech therapist, and psychologist. Nachman is popular at the Child Development Center. He is eligible for all therapies. At our first session, I’m surprised to find that I enjoy talking to the social worker. Rosally listens carefully to my description of life with Nachman, and I tell her about the difficulty in finding productive activities that interest him. “A child like this in a secular environment, like mine,” she says offhandedly, “would be distracted by technology all day. But there definitely are activities that could stimulate him—“ Rosally goes on about different activities that could stimulate Nachman, but I can’t get her words out of my head. Unknowingly, she’d just presented me with the grandest medal of honor I could have

Nachman is popular at the Child Development Center. He is eligible for all therapies. ever wished for. There’s an easy way out, but I’m not taking it. I am not destroying my child because it is convenient. Those distractions are obviously out of the question, but I’m not either resorting to any of the other devices out there. I’m trying to raise my child the oldfashioned way with the purest of values. And I’m working hard. The session is about guidance and direction, but for me, it is a morale booster more than anything else. And that helps me much more than any advice would. We also start a series of sessions with Libi, a pink-faced, energetic occupational therapist, and Nachman is hooked from the start. Playing in a colorful room with a hammock, huge beanbags, a trampoline, and two adults’ exclusive attention is more than Nachman could ever ask for. Libi and Nachman paint and color, play mock bowling, draw pictures, and take turns throwing a ball. I sit and smile and nod and shout, “Hurray!” I am happy to be present just so I can watch someone giving Nachman exclusive attention and engaging him in all those kiddie activities I don’t always have patience for. Libi wants to see Nachman unmedicated, so I bring him without Ritalin at our

fifth session. But there is absolutely no change. Nachman is the attentive and obedient boy he always is during therapy. Libi is shocked and asks me to come next time alone for an adult session. “It’s hard for me to believe that a child diagnosed with severe ADHD could be so focused throughout our session.” “Look, he’s getting individual attention; he is in a different and exciting environment—“ “Still.”

see a five-year-old on Ritalin, but we’ve been through it too many times to count. Self-defense is draining. It’s hard to keep battling and defeating the doubts implanted by all those caring people in my life. I have to be my own cheerleader. Everyone is unknowingly pointing to me as culprit, and I have to appoint myself as the hero. Because no one else is Nachman’s mother and no one can ever understand. No one in the world will ever know of the bloody battles I wage inside, of the tears shed in the night. No one will ever know what it is to be Nachman’s mother. My job is double: I have to be a good mother to Nachman and a good friend to myself. My lifeline is Suri and Chavy. Suri and Chavy are the kind of children who make you smile just by being there. They are the children in the parenting books. They are my proof that we are not a dysfunctional family. They whisper to me that Nachman’s issues are not my fault. I will consult with professionals and give Nachman the therapy he deserves. I will listen to advice and try to implement good suggestions. But inside I will always cheer myself on. I’m trying, I’m struggling, I’m failing, but I’m also winning. Great job, Mom.

She’d just presented me with the grandest medal of honor I could have ever wished for. Oh, no. Not again. “Think about it,” Libi says. “Nachman gets so much attention when he is rowdy; maybe it’s worth it for him. Try to lavish him with attention when he behaves nicely—“ I know these lines. I will not go there again. “It’s biological. He’s hopping from the second he wakes up in the morning.” “Why don’t you try stopping the Ritalin for a while?” “Libi, it’s impossible.” I have no strength to explain and I don’t even have to. Yes, every professional will raise their eyebrows when they

READING TO BABIES: WHY, WHEN, AND HOW Do you remember the phrase, “Go outside and play!” from childhood? As a child, I used to roam the area near my house freely. “Why do we pay rent in the summer?” my mother always asked. But children today spend less time playing outdoors than any previous generation. The benefits of outdoor play, however, have not diminished. Children are naturally drawn to active play outdoors. It allows them to explore their environment, develop muscle strength and coordination, and gain selfconfidence. Playing outdoors also increases flexibility, fine and gross motor skills, and is related to the development of a wide variety of physical skills. Toys that require balance and coordination — such as bikes — teach children new skills, encourage the development of self-confidence, and satisfy their interest in exploration. The physical benefits of outdoor play are obvious, but there are also a lot of social and emotional ways children develop when they play outside. When young children build sand castles, play games with friends, or explore things they find in nature, it encourages logical thinking, and improves their ability to reason. Outdoor play also allows children to take risks, stretch their imaginations, explore their interests, and discover what they enjoy doing. And

132 / THE MONS E Y V IE W

when kids spend time outside with peers, it gives them the opportunity to build the social skills they need to create healthy friendships throughout life. Easy social outdoor games include classics such as Hide and Seek, Red Light/Green light, Mother May I, Simon Says, and Tag. Children need the opportunity to explore the unknown, the unpredictable, and the adventurous. Outdoor play enables young children to learn a lot about the world. How does ice feel and sound? How do plants grow? How does mud feel? What does a tomato smell and taste like? While outside, children can learn math, science, gardening, construction, farming, vocabulary, the seasons, the various times of the day, and all about the local weather. Not only do children learn lots of basic information about how the world works in a very effective manner, they are more likely to remember the information since it is concrete and meaningful. The simplest outdoor activities leave the most lasting memories for kids. And it can also make children more relaxed. “Kids experience tremendous stress reduction from even a little contact with nature,” says a parenting expert. A study found that just a 20-minute walk in the park reduced symptoms of attention deficit hyperactiv-

ity disorder. Research shows that children with more exposure to nature have reduced stress levels and longer attention spans. Do your Chol HaMoed plans include outdoor activities? Lucky for me, my children are still at the stage where going to a local park is a real treat. A few planned activities enhance the excitement, as well as their development. Enjoy these outdoor activities with your child: Plant something. Younger children can dig holes or water plants, and older children can label plant markers. Try growing grass, flowers, vegetable cuttings, bean sprouts, or cherry tomatoes in a planter on a porch if you’re a beginner or have limited space. You can also give your toddler a pot with some potting soil and some weeds you pull up to “plant.” Yard work. Children can help pull weeds and sprinkle the flowers with a tiny watering can. My girls love picking dandelions, although I don’t enjoy dealing with the stains. Want even more fun? Add a kid-size rake and a bubbleblowing lawn mower. Water flowers. Use a small, light watering can, a hose, a plastic cup with a few holes punched on the bottom, or spray/ water bottle. Fill it half full with water then let your child water flowers, trees, or even just the grass! Frolic in the rain. Rainy Chol Hamoed? No problem. Anyone who’s tried keeping children from jumping through every puddle in

Buyer Turn-offs ers will find it easier to imagine their own things in that space.

by Ann Zeilingold

TRANSPORTATION

A home for sale needs to look its best when a prospective buyer views it. Shaindy M., who is looking for a home told me, ”I walked into a home, and the smell hit me. I had to run out of the house.” The first impression that a buyer has will always last and cannot be redone. According to Realtor.com, a home that shows well will sell for a higher price and more quickly than one that another home in the same area, identical in style and size. Here are 10 top buyer “turn-offs”:

NOISE

Prospective buyers don’t want to hear planes, trains, and highways, and they will pay a lot more to be in a quieter area. HIGH VOLTAGE POWER LINES

Many purchasers will not buy a home, no matter how good the price may be, near visible power lines. There is a lot of information available on electromagnetic fields and local utility companies also are excellent sources of information. But even if the home is tested, people are still nervous about possible future ramifications.

DIRTY BATHROOMS AND KITCHENS:

Research among 4,000 buyers found that dirty kitchens and bathrooms were the biggest turnoffs. Many potential buyers will try to imagine themselves living in the property during a viewing, and having their senses offended by a lack of cleanliness or hygiene can be a real barrier. Sarah Klein of Rodeo Realty in Monsey, NY says, “Buyers are completely turned off by dirty kitchens and bathrooms, unmade beds, and dirty laundry overflowing from hampers and on the floor.” BAD SMELLS

Devorah Sekula, Realtor with Realty Teams, thinks a house that smells bad triggers the strongest negative reaction in buyers. “They might not even notice it all that much at the time of viewing, while they’re concentrating on the layout and state of the house, but the thing with bad odors is that they create a subconscious bad impression that lingers. It gives them an overall ‘bad feeling’ about the house,” she says. “That is disastrous, as you can’t reason with that kind of sentiment.” CLUTTER

“Clutter is a killer,” says Naomi Streicher, broker owner of Realty Teams of Pomona, NY. “As well as proving a distraction for buyers, having too much stuff around could give them the impression that the house is too small.” If you can’t bring yourself to throw things out, consider putting things in storage. Don’t just store the big things; your home will look more modern if you pack away any ornaments and trinkets that usually sit on shelves, and would-be buy-

SELLERS WHO SHOW YOU AROUND

The first impression that a buyer has will always last and cannot be redone.

Realtor Robert Lazaros of Paramount Properties says, “There is nothing more off-putting to a potential buyer than a seller showing the home. It makes the buyer uncomfortable so they can’t view the property properly. It’s hard to say how much this would ‘cost’ you, but it will certainly take longer to sell your home: it could take six to nine months, for example, as opposed to three

months. At the very least, ask a trusted friend to show potential buyers around to take some of the pressure off.” UNTIDY COMMUNAL AREAS IN CONDOS AND CO-OPS

Uncared for and messy communal areas, both inside and outside a property put a question mark over how actively the management or the Homeowners Association is caring for the property. These are also often the first parts of the property buyers will see. Always keep them vacuumed and clear of clutter, debris, and old mail and newspapers. AWKWARD LAYOUTS

“With older properties, especially terraced houses, it is quite common to find the bathroom is either on the ground floor past the kitchen, or accessed via a bedroom, which is not always ideal for young children or when guests come to stay. Other layout issues include dining rooms being set away from the kitchen, so food has to be carried through another room before reaching the table.” You cannot alter some of these issues easily, so instead make sure the property looks as good as possible and remember that you saw through those issues when you bought it, so someone else will probably do the same.

DEATH

Knowing someone has recently died in a property can immediately put some people off, as can any signs of dead animals. Rose G. recently viewed a property that had been empty for two years. “I walked over to the pool and saw 12 dead pigeons floating in it, in various stages of decomposition. It was an awful sight and I couldn’t imagine anyone ever wanting to swim in it. A pool can be cleaned and dead animals removed, but that kind of thing is certain to put off buyers and definitely won’t give them the sensation that the house ‘feels right’.” HOUSES WITH LOTS OF CATS

However much a buyer likes animals, they may still recoil if you have a property full of cats. This is especially off-putting in a family home when potential buyers worry about kids with allergies or asthma suffering due to previous feline residents. Buyers also worry that the cats might return when the new owners move in.
