I really wanted to thank The Monsey View for putting in the Pesach Recipes for people that don’t eat store-bought products on Pesach. It is the first kosher magazine that had in mind the alter heim minhagim, with recipes that don’t use ketchup, duck sauce, baking powder, and all other ingredients many of us don’t use on Pesach. Also, I see that lots of people enjoyed your pre-Pesach cleaning ideas; it was a good incentive to get their work going. Just one comment though: My “before” and “after” closets look exactly the same. If you are organized the whole year (I reorganize the closets and drawers while packing away laundry every week, which takes two minutes), the week of Pesach cleaning will be so much easier! noteworthy article on not mishing on Pesach. I grew up in a home in which we didn’t mish and I continue to keep the minhagim in my own home, as well. Contrary to what people feel, (that depriving the children is not the right thing) I feel it has only bring out strength and good feeling in my children. The best chocolate and the most exquisite cakes do not give the satisfaction of eight days of total self-control. The greatest gift we can give our kids is the strength of character to enable them to endure today’s turbulent times. P.S. I’ve never taste a sweeter piece of chocolate than kosher l’Pesach chocolate on Acharon shel Pesach. A veteran non-misher.

I read EP’s letter in response to the serial called Two by Fours. As a reader, I would like to comment on her letter, as well as to Chany Rosengarten’s explanation of her story line. I am not sure what EP meant by “Preserve Ramapo ideals,” but I am a frum lady, like Sara Binet, and I take issue with what her intention is by posing the question. While I did not grow up in Monsey, I have had a connection with this town for most of my 44 years of married life and have lived here for twenty of those years. I raised my children here. Two of my marrieds live here. I live in a frum neighborhood. My husband and I (like many yeshivish and chasidishe families) chose to settle in Monsey instead of the city because we wanted to live in a frum town without a dense population and all that brings with it: more noise, more congestion, more traffic — as well as taking advantage of a different quality of life that living out of town offers. We struggled to be able to buy our home and had always pictured ourselves living out our years here with our children living nearby, but now…I can’t see that happening. What will be? On one hand, I try to tell myself that I should be happy about what is happening in Monsey. Yiddishkeit is flourishing in America B”H. It’s a bracha! I love Yidden. I want to live among Yidden. I want my grandchildren playing with Yidden. I love to see kollelim, shuls, chadarim, and yeshivos flourishing. But the situation in our town is quite challenging for many of us who own homes and have been here for years. As a result,

A palpable fear had gripped Menachem since the day a le er from the IRS had arrived. I have very mixed feelings about what is happening. Does it mean that I don’t want frum neighbors? One could try to say that, but it’s not true. Of course, I want frum neighbors! And I also understand that people need a place to live. But I have noticed that NOBODY seems to care for what the current homeowners — frum Yidden themselves — think. The feelings and concerns, the hopes and dreams and futures of most of the current frum residents are sadly ignored. So, allow me to ask a question in turn to EP and her friends and to all who are watching the massive building that is occurring and doing nothing: Have you thought at all about your neighbors who do indeed want frum people living next to them but do not necessarily want their home town being turned into the equivalent of a city? Have you considered what your frum neighbors are going through watching 8, 12, and 16 family homes being built on the property next door to them that previously had one family on it? Have you thought about how this affects their lives? This is what I believe Sara Binet expresses in Two by Fours and what Chany Rosengarten portrays so well in her story. While a magazine is really not the ideal venue to carry on a dialogue about these problems — we don’t know where else would be better to do so. It would be remiss if I didn’t express my appreciation to The Monsey View for being open enough to let an author fictionalize a reality that is actually happening, and hopefully giving everyone some food for thought. Kudos to “Disappointed Mother” in your April 6 issue. School should be in effect until two days before yom tov, just like it is in the rest of the world which manages perfectly okay with such a system. After all, we all have the same Jewish calendar and halachos. Another Frustrated Parent

FUN SCHOOL IS NOT FUNNY

Boy was I glad to read your letter last week. My three-, five-, and seven-year-old daughters came home from school today with a big note. The last day of school before Pesach is Friday, seven days before Pesach! I simply have no words! I can’t fathom why young children have to be home seven days before yom tov to “help” their mother. The schools, of course, “do their duty” by providing transportation and lunch free of charge, while charging “only” for the Fun School itself. I just can’t understand from where parents are supposed to have an extra $120 for fun school when they don’t have $120 to buy their kids a pair of shoes; let alone clothing, and groceries! In every normal Jewish home Fun School is not optional! It surely is not a luxury, and that doesn’t matter on your budget. It’s sheer necessity in such a hectic time! I surely hope this school administrations will do something

Dear Disappointed Mother, I am a full time teacher in the Monsey area for about thirty years now. I love the children and the job. After all these years, I get no benefits. I actually am not paid for midwinter vacation, I am not paid for the summer vacation, not paid for time off before Pesach — only for the actual yom tov. The school’s policy is to pay for 20 teaching days a month, four weeks of five days each. A teaching month is more than 20 days. Do you office mommies also work a few days a month for free? I am at a loss to understand your comparison! You work Isru Chag, and you’re paid for Isru Chag. I don’t work Isru Chag. I am not paid for Isru Chag. Please understand that I am not paid for the hours and hours of preparation before each day. When you go home, you’re ready to tackle your housework etc. When I get home, I also have housework, plus hours of homework and am generally available to any mother who wishes to speak to me. When am I to prepare for yom tov? In the summer, I prepare for the yomim tovim, but Pesach is a little different. Would you want your daughter spending her day with

While I understand The Disappointed Mother’s frustration regarding the long Pesach vacation, coming from both sides, I’d like to give her some perspective. I taught for many years, and I now work in an office. If the letter writer feels that the hours spent in an office compares to the hours spent in the classroom, she obviously never taught! To go in front of the classroom, one has to be prepared with a lesson, has to be on the ball at all times, properly dressed, and oh, the emotional energy it takes! You can’t just waltz into the classroom like you get to an office desk, with coffee cup in hand, breakfast in your bag that you can munch on while you type at the computer, and in the classroom, most of the time, you don’t get a chair to sit on. You can’t compare the energy it takes to deal with children to the energy it takes to do office work. I work very hard at my office job. It demands a lot of concentration and a lot of work, but it cannot compare to teaching. When I got notes about my children being off early — while it did put me in a spot as far as placing them before yom tov is concerned — I respected the need.

Dear B.F., Regarding your letter about housing in Monsey, I have a few points to clear up. First of all, you are happy that your property value is rising. Are you not concerned about where your kids are going to live? Secondly, you plan on building a single family home. Kol hakavod. But most people nowadays try to push in as many apartments as possible, because each apartment with “closet-sized bedrooms” goes for a hefty sum. Third, I am extremely happy for my brethren that have cheaper housing here, but shouldn’t we worry about ourselves and our children first? I am struggling to pay the fluctuating rent prices here in Monsey, and I can only dream of owning a home in today’s crazy market. Being that you are a homeowner, I feel that you can not fully understand the young generation needing a roof over their heads for a decent price and groping with abnormal prices to buy a piece of land. In fact, following the market closely, I see something that I think has not happened in ages. The prices of homes have almost doubled in the last three years. Pre-Pesach Calm Pesach is in one week, and our lives tend to get busier and more hectic as we move closer to it – even for the people who started cleaning Chanukah time. I like to check in with different types of people and ask them what their eating habits look like right now. So, I did some research,and it turns out that most people were experiencing the same issue: “I don’t have time to eat!” And when they do have a minute to eat, it’s only enough time to grab something quick, like cookies and chips. Of course, I also had feedback from my clients and other women who claimed that if they didn’t make time to eat healthy, they wouldn’t function as well. These clients don’t have more time than other people – they’ve simply set up a system to manage their priorities. And still, I had some people report to me that they starve the whole day and by the time night comes around, they feel like they have a hole in their stomach that they literally cannot fill. They eat dinner, and then they start opening their cabinets, fridge, and freezer ten times in the hopes of finding something that they didn’t see before. So, for the most part, I got the picture that yes, everyone is busy – but I can try to help you out by sharing some tips on how to “grab” healthy foods. The only thing you need to do is make sure you keep these healthy foods in the house. If you have milk and cookies at home, obviously someone had to go and buy them at the supermarket. So, if you set three minutes aside to make yourself a list of some quick

The Sfas Emes gives a beautiful explanation as to why this Shabbos is called Shabbos HaGadol. (first ma’amar, Shabbos HaGadol 5646) What is the difference between a katan and a gadol? A katan does mitzvos before the age of bar/bas mitzvah for the sake of chinuch, even though he is not mechuyav, whereas a gadol is mechuyav. The Sfas Emes explains that before Hashem commanded us in any mitzvos, Klal Yisrael was a katan. We began keeping Shabbos when Moshe Rabbeinu received permission from Paroh to allow us one day each week to rest from our work. (Shemos Rabbah 1:28) However, since Hashem had not yet commanded us in any mitzvos — including Shabbos — we kept that mitzvah as a katan. On the Shabbos before Pesach, Hashem gave us our first mitzvah as a nation: Select a lamb for the korban pesach. (Shemos 12:3, 12:21) With that one mitzvah, we became mechuyav, and thus we matured from the status of katan to gadol. Therefore, the Shabbos when we received that mitzvah and became “gadol” is called “Shabbos HaGadol.” In that sense, Shabbos HaGadol was the Bar Mitzvah of Klal Yisrael. Chazal say that it is greater to do a mitzvah in which we are mechuyav, than one in which

we are not mechuyav (Kiddushin 31a). The Sfas Emes explains that even though the avos were madreigos far beyond us, nevertheless, our mitzvos have more impact because we are mechuyav. It says in Shir Hashirim (1:3), “Because of the fragrance of your good oils, your name is ‘oil

One mitzvah can be enough. flowing forth.’” (Shir Hashirim 1:3) The Midrash (Shir HaShirim Rabbah 1:3:1) states that this is a moshul for the performance of mitzvos. The mitzvos of the avos are likened to the fragrance of the good oils, because the avos kept mitzvos without being mechuyav. Our avodah is the fine oil itself, because we perform mitzvos while being mechuyav. In addition to bringing us to the spiritual maturity of a gadol,

the mitzvah of taking the lamb enabled us to ultimately be redeemed from Mitzrayim. The Sfas Emes brings a Rashi that Klal Yisrael had no z’chusim with which to be worthy of redemption. Hashem gave us the mitzvah of korban pesach (and milah) to give us this zechus. Stepping back a moment, we might wonder why this one seemingly small mitzvah of selecting a lamb could have the awesome power to completely transform our relationship to Hashem and to every other mitzvah, as well as give us the zechus we needed to be redeemed from Mitzrayim when were so assimilated that we were barely discernible from the mitzriyim themselves. The Sfas Emes answers this question in another ma’amar (Parshas Bo 5648). The Sfas Emes quotes the Zohar in Parshas Behar that if a person’s heart is subjugated to the sitra achra, it is impossible for him to take upon himself the ol malchus shamayim. After all, a servant cannot serve two masters. Upon this, the Mishna in Avos says that the one who takes upon himself the yoke of Torah, the yoke of other kingdoms comes off him. By fulfilling this one act at Hashem’s command, we accepted upon ourselves the ol malchus shamayim and thus rejected avodah zara, demonstrating that our will was now subju-

gated to Hashem alone. We had become avdei Hashem. We yearn to have a deep, mature, and life-altering relationship with Hashem. We want to have zechusim to carry us through this world and into the next. Then we look

By creating an opening the size of the eye of a needle, Hashem will widen it until even wagons and carriages can pass through. (Shir HaShirim Rabbah 5:3) It says in Tehillim 102:12, “As far as the east is from the west, He distanced our transgressions from us.” I once heard a powerful vort on this posuk. How far is east from west? It is only a matter of reversing our direction. We see how great the distance is between ourselves and Hashem — between who we are and who we want to be. We just have to turn ourselves around to move in the right direction, and take a single small step. Hashem will bring us the rest of the way.

Q&A

Occasionally, my house gets overrun with ants. On Shabbos, how do I deal with them when sweeping the floor? May I sweep them into the dustpan if they are in the path of the broom, or must I sweep around them? Similarly, if some of the ants unintentionally land in the dustpan, must I wait for them to crawl out before I spill the pan’s contents into the garbage? May I tie up a garbage bag although that will cause some ants inside to get trapped?

1) It is s mutter to sweep the floor on Shabbos. Although dirt on the floor is muktzah, Chaza”l were matir it, because of kavod habriyos. Therefore , if whilst sweeping the floor in order to get the room clean, there are ants on the floor in the path of the broom, one may sweep the ants together with the rest of the dirt, and put them into the shovel and garbage bag. One may not sweep ants separately (even with a broom) because they are muktzah. When sweeping ants together with the rest of the dirt, one should not have the intention to kill

them. (There is no issur of tzeidah/trapping (‫ )צידה‬with such slow-moving creatures.) 2) When it is necessary to flush the toilet and there are flies or other insects in the toilet bowl, one may flush the toilet even if it would flush or kill the insects. Flushing the toilet when needed is considered kavod habriyos, but one should not flush the toilet for the purpose of getting rid of the insects. If the insects would disturb one from comfortably using the bathroom, one may flush the toilet before using it. 3) If there are ants in the kitchen sink, one should refrain from rinsing the sink in a manner that would definitely kill them. However, if it’s a warm day and the kitchen is used for eating or sitting in, and by not rinsing the dishes after the seudah the kitchen would not be a respectable room for Shabbos, one may rinse the dishes even if the insects would get rinsed together with them. However one should not intentionally rinse the insects. 3) Although Chaza”l were matir some isurei d’rabbonon because of kavod habriyos, one should never pasken alone on other isurei d’rabbonon.

THE SAME STUFF “Rochel, your turn. Here are the forks.” Her sister held them out, massaging her wrists. With exhaustion in her eyes, Rochel looked at the forks that a mere half hour ago had her muscles screaming in agony. “I already did it longer than you! Can you please have Nechama do it?” “Nechama is only six. Please… my muscles are on fire. Please take the forks from me!”” “When I was six, I was also beating these egg whites. They should be banned!” It was another erev Pesach in the Muffs home in Shavel, Lithuania. No egg beaters, no mixers, no food processors, and no electricity. Every year, the

A half hour of pummeling gave her enough Pesach flour for the cake. She then took a precious imported lemon (the farmer had assured her that he personally knew the Italian farmer who had grown the fruit) and squeezed half of it into a cup for the cake. She listened to her daughter Rochel say, “Mommy, we’ve all done the egg whites twice already. Do you think it’s ready?” Shrugging, Mrs. Muffs took a tall glass, measured out one cup of the precious sugar, and sprinkled it

into the almost adequately stiff egg whites. She beat it some more before adding the matzah meal. Her mixing was completed with the lemon juice, which she slowly trickled into the mixture. “I hope we don’t eat this entire cake at the first Seder. I really don’t want to go through another episode of beating twelve egg whites with two forks... Do you think my great-granddaughters will keep our tradition of fresh sponge cake for Pesach?” With more Pesach preparations ahead of them, Mama poured the batter in the once-a-year-used sponge cake pan and put it into the newly cleaned wood-burning stove. When it would be done, they could proceed with cooking the chicken soup. She smiled, looking at her special Seder dishes. One would think the labor invested in the sponge cake would dampen her love for this special holiday, but it didn’t. Two forks, twelve egg whites, and tired daughters are all a part of Pesach. They had better start preparing the rest of the Seder. As it turned out, Great-Grandma’s daughter — my grandmother — thought she was in heaven when the first hand rotary beater came out! In America, Grandma bought the utensil and was ecstatic with the ease it now took to beat the twelve egg whites. A few years later, the electric mixer took the place of the muscle-building forks and rotary beater. In those days, throughout the globe, women didn’t need gyms and health clubs to stay fit; they got enough exercise — free of charge! They didn’t need diet clubs to learn the secret of only having one sponge cake per family each Pesach. I am that great-granddaughter, the one Mrs. Muffs wondered about. I use one fork to beat eggs for my morning omelet and use my electric mixer for not only sponge cakes, but also brownies and ice cream. But some things never change. I also have that once-a-year-used sponge cake pan and special Pesach dishes that only come out after I scrub everything from ceiling to floor. Each year, as I separate those eggs and turn the mixer on high, a part of me goes back to a kitchen in Lithuania where a mommy and her daughters stood with two forks beating twelve egg whites for one sponge cake l’kavod Pesach. And I wonder how many calories the simple task of turning on a mixer uses? Ah yes, the good old days…

THE SURVIVING SLICE “Just have in mind al b’ir chometz when you do it, and don’t think about the waste. It’s a mitzvah,” my sister urges me through the wires as I hesitantly drop the brand-new bottle of soy sauce into the bin to join the fate of Teriyaki, Sushi, and Oriental Stir Fry. Rosh Chodesh Nissan always springs up on me, catching me and my loaded pantry unawares. One day, I’m planning filling dinners and stocking up on the staples, and then the itch sets in and I hurriedly pronounce my kitchen a chometz-free zone, switching over to a menu of fast food, raw food, and then no food. And so, on this fine spring day, I can’t help but feel guilty as I continue to chuck pasta, oatmeal, pancake mix, and the bag of flour that has never had its tikkun. Foodstuffs that by any stretch of the imagination can still be consumed are designated to my chometz box. Like instant oatmeal, which can surely be prepared in a foam cup on the porch using boiled water from the percolator. Ditto for instant soups. The liquors I save too, of course — for the garbage collectors, although I honestly know that the only time I’ll get to see them is when I’ll be running after the truck with an armload of garbage and boxes. It’s my way of easing the guilt and procrastination of the ultimate fate of anything leaven. Industriously working my way through the kitchen, I hit upon the epicenter of guilt: my freezer. The ground meat mixture, stored in bags, saved for “before Pesach,” get chucked. The various loaves of bread I hang on the doorknob, in my mind planning a trip to feed the ducks,

even while I know that it will end up not in Suzanne Lake, but with the Merangi Brothers. The bags of mishloach manos cookies that I couldn’t gather the courage to taste get dumped. Well, it’s a mitzvah, you know... Out comes the leftover challah that was to become homemade breadcrumbs. And in stays the

en left, it will be what my husband will burn on erev Pesach. I pull a larger suitcase out of the closet — the largest I own. When it comes to Pesach, I need to pack everything. The winter wardrobes, the spring wardrobes, the summer wardrobes (maybe, hopefully, it’ll be warm enough for my kids to wear their new shorts). The velours and the cottons, the coats, the jackets and capes, the hats and the caps — and not to forget the kids’ fedoras! The drawers are bare. The suitcase is full. I’m thankful that they don’t weigh baggage when crossing over the GWB. Pressing down the iron on the kittel pleats one last time, I check in with my sister. “Uh, oh. I have no bottled water,” she says, going over her list.

My mother-in-law’s kitchen is gleaming with silver foil, and the scent of lemon juice and chicken soup (and a whiff of horseradish) create the wonderful medley of Pesach smells. It’s erev Pesach, and I’m sitting at the table a few hours to the zman, having received the privilege of cracking some nuts. (It came with a lot of begging, do not fear.) My phone rings. I glance at the caller ID, to see my home number. Huh? It’s my sister. She has a funny sound in her voice. “Where’s your water?” she asks, although it doesn’t seem like this is what she really wants to say.

“In the coat closet. Didn’t find it?” “Look, I didn’t remember where you had said it was. I came in here, and looking around, I idly opened your fridge, and on an instinct, the freezer as well. Not that I thought that you kept any water there, and… You know you have a slice of pizza in your freezer?” I inhaled so sharply and the blood rushed to my face so fast that everyone in the kitchen suddenly eyed me, their faces full of frightened concern. “I can’t believe it…” I moaned. “Dini, do something. Is there anything you can do?” “I actually hear a garbage truck outside. I’m running out to catch it.”

While I sat and struggled to regain my composure, my sister was running down my stairs with the offensive triangular k’zayis of leaven. And I? I learned to truly cherish this mitzvah of b’ir chometz. Come Nissan, I don’t let any guilt rationalize me into leaving chometz over. But I still put the oatmeal into the chometz box.. Just in case.

Recap: Kasten’s houses are going up at a rapid pace, and Sara finds herself inconvenienced numerous times, but the worst is when she’s trying to help her daughter, Tehilla, retain her spot in school, and the phone call to her rav is interrupted by technicians rewiring the neighborhood phone lines.

Sara was treated to an ever-shifting array of aromas, and she found she enjoyed them all. There had been the wet earth, as it was unclumped from deep in the bowels of the ground. Then the scent of fresh, raw wood until it was misted in rain, and took on a soggy, Thursday afternoon smell. Then the chalky sheetrock, mixed with wood pulp, and finally, she smelled the wet paint drying slowly in the summer rain, and she breathed in the sharp tang deeply — ah! I have to make peace with change, Sara thought as she stepped out of her house and was assailed with a scent so new, so fresh, it struck her between the ribs. I was the one who chose to stay here, yet I can’t keep anyone back from growing, expanding. Especially not Yiddishe kinderlach, burgeoning like wildflowers in a valley in spring. Which is why, when she met Kasten escorting a young couple, the woman bouncing a pink bedecked baby on her waist, she waved curtly and said, “Hi, I’m the neighbor right next door. Sara Binet,” before making her way to her car. Over the next few days, she counted twenty families who marched in and out of the new apartments. She wasn’t even counting the appointments that were set during her work hours. “There are so many people who are willing, desperate even, to buy in Monsey,” she told Elimelech. “I should have sold our house and made room for six more families just for the chesed of it.” “It’s okay. Everyone finds a roof over their head, eventually,” Elimelech said. “It’s just that our neighborhood is now central, because Monsey has grown and spread wider than ever.” “Can you imagine?” Sara said. Who would have thought, ten years before, when she went, like a metzora, to the very edges of the camp, that one day her house would be worth a half a million dollars, probably more. If she’d only have a way of cashing in on her experiences, the way a person undergoing trials and tribulations later turns it into the cornerstone of their being. But that meant

At a price much higher than she’d originally bought this one, because real estate had risen with the demand, all over town. “Change is part of life,” she told Tehilla when the girl threw a tantrum about her new shoes, still hard soled and not yet conformed to her awkward gait. Change is inevitable, Sara kept reminding herself, noticing how she was gradually getting the message, how it was was creeping into her and yet, Sara knew she was afraid.

This is hard for me too. I wish we’d moved. “Who’s going to move in?” she asked Elimelech on an almost daily basis. “I’m afraid. I’ve seen so many people here…” She sighed deeply and luxuriously. “I don’t know who’s serious. These will be our neighbors. They live so close.” She gestured to the window, where the darkened, still bare windows of the neighboring houses brooded and stared into her own. “Are you davening?” he asked her. “Every day, we daven for a shachen tov. I daven for this.” “Me too.” But she still looked worried, not convinced in the power of her own prayers. “And you know that whoever moves in, it’s from Hashem,” Elimelech stressed. “It’s going to be good. Even if it doesn’t look that way.”

Too many risk factors, too many changes, too close to home. “You know that our house stays ours,” he said. “Our family, our lot, our chinuch, our lives stay the same, even if it appears that others are getting dangerously close. We are the guards of our own family.” “I don’t know that,” Sara said, and now the lump that had formed and hardened beneath her chest rose to her throat like an air bubble, so she choked on it and tears spilled from her eyes. So that was it. She was losing control over her own life. “They are living so close. They are so different. There are so many of them. And our children are young. I, myself, feel young next to them all. Such coifed women, you’d think they had a doctorate in couture. I have nothing in common with them, and yet, their exhaust fans and their dryer lint is literally breathing into the eyes and ears of our home. And what about our children? And what about neighborliness? And what about—” She was really crying now, and the cynical part of her thought, Oh, am I glad you’re crying this out, but

her compassionate part was just happy she was finally admitting how small, how exposed, how vulnerable she felt. Elimelech just listened. Sara calmed herself. “What about our privacy?” she said, between gulps. “We’ll be okay,” Elemelech said. “I don’t know,” Sara pleaded. Elimelech seemed to hesitate. “What?” Sara insisted, her eyebrows raised in curiosity, her figure rearranging itself into matronly form. “Can I admit this? This is hard for me too. I wish we’d moved. I knew the house as we knew it would be no more. But I’m on your team. We’ll weather this together. We’ll do it. We’ve faced worse. Tehilla.” They both sighed, because as bad as it was when they hadn’t a clue why she was so, so difficult, the current situation, knowing what her problems and needs were, being upfront with the school officials, and being rejected for it, it was way, way more painful than anything. And Chaim Elazar. Elimelech had gotten alarmed on Pesach, when he realized the boy was twenty or thirty pounds down from his bar mitzvah size. He had noticed it when they went to buy a new suit, and he hadn’t had the chance to properly address

But only if we work as a team. Only if we look reality squarely into the eye and accept, accept. Do you agree?” Sara nodded in bold, heavy shakes. “So then let’s allow whoever Hashem wants near us, to sign and close with Kasten, and let’s talk about Chaim Elazar now. Remove the meat from the pot, and using an immersion blender, blend the sauce. Freeze sauce and the meat separately if desired, and reheat together. Make sure the meat is completely cold before slicing.

French roast or chuck eye roast 5 large Spanish onions, sliced 2 parsnips, peeled and chunked Salt

1. Place onions and parsnip on the bottom of a pot. Place the roast on top of the vegetables. Season with salt. 2. Cover the pot and simmer meat for 3 to 4 hours. Check it every so often and turn the roast. Check if the onions and roast are releasing enough water. If you need more water, add just ½ cup water at a time. 3. When done cooking, remove the roast and refrigerate until cold. Slice when cold. Using an immersion blender, blend the vegetables and serve as a sauce over the sliced roast.

PRECISE INSTRUC TIONS FOR THE PERFEC T COWBOY STEAK OR BONE-IN RIB ROAST BY DRAIZY WERCBERGER

You know when you pass those 2-inch thick steaks in the meat aisle, and you are totally salivating yet never pick one up because you don’t know how to prepare it? Did you ever have that? Well, those days are over. Here are exact, precise, instructions on how to get the perfect cowboy steak, every time! I have also included instructions on how to prepare a bone-in rib roast. It’s a pretty expensive meat, but tastes completely divine! You need about a 1/2 pound of meat per person for a main dish size. (Especially during yom tov, when you serve it after soup alongside two sides, you do not need more per person.) These instructions are very simple, but follow them exactly. This dish is best made fresh, when possible. Make sure your meat is completely defrosted and brought to room temperature.

2-INCH COWBOY STEAK Liberally rub kosher salt on both sides of meat. Let sit for about 10 minutes in the salt. Preheat oven to 350�. Place a cookie sheet into oven to heat. Meanwhile, heat a large frying pan into which the steak fits, until it is very hot. No oil needed. When pan is very hot, sear the steak for 8 minutes exactly on each side. Transfer the steak to the hot cookie sheet into the preheated oven and bake for 15 minutes for medium rare. Even if you don’t like medium rare, definitely don’t bake for more than 20 minutes. Remove from oven and tent with foil for 10 minutes before serving.

BONE-IN RIB ROAST Using your hands, liberally smear schmaltz or oil and kosher salt on all sides of the roast. Let stand for about 30 minutes. Place the rib roast into an oven that was preheated to 500�. Bake for 20 minutes. Lower the oven temperature to 350� and continue baking the roast for 22 minutes for each pound of meat. Example: You have a 5-pound rib roast that will feed 10 people. It has to be in the oven for 5 (pounds) x 22 (minutes) = 110 minutes: 1 hour and 50 minutes. When you calculate how much time the roast needs in the oven, include the 20 minutes that it was on 500� in your calculation. So your 5-pound roast would be in the oven for 20 minutes on 500� and 90 minutes on 350�. Remove from oven and tent with foil. Let stand for at least a half hour before serving. Remove the bones and cut thick slices.

4. Pour sauce over meat. Then, roll together paper to seal the meat and sauce, fold edges under, and cover the pan. If you want to prepare this ahead, but cook it fresh, you can freeze it at this point, and on yom tov, cook it on a hot tray.

5. Bake on 350ďż˝ for 2 hours. 6. Remove meat, and refrigerate for 2 hours before slicing. Slice with a long, sharp knife. Place meat in sauce to reheat.

The Important Jobs in Life My grandchildren are the best bag folders around. It’s the day before erev Pesach and the kids are all home from school. The rebbes and the teachers also have to “make pesach,” so they have to give the children off. My daughter, who lives upstairs from me, graciously spares one of her older children to “go help Bubby,” for which I am very grateful. Sometimes, though, it’s one of the little ones who could use the diversion and attention that comes along with “helping” Bubby. With an aura of importance, the five- or six-year-old little boy comes in, a big bright smile lighting up his face. “My mommy said I should come help you.” Of course, I won’t burst his bubble by explaining that I am also helping his mother by finding something to keep him out of her hair and away from his siblings for a bit. He tears up a roll of paper towels and then cuts large pieces of aluminum foil for yom tov use. But the favorite chore by far, is folding the bags. A few weeks before yom tov I start saving all plastic shopping bags that come into the house. When I need an important job for a willing helper, I give him the bags and an empty shoe box. He inspects each one for rips and then folds the ones that have passed inspections and lines them up neatly in the shoebox. I’ve sometimes found myself stopping my work just to observe the concentration on the child’s face and the sense of satisfaction for a job well done.

Our children have the mitzvah of Kibbud Av V’Em (which, by the way also includes grandparents). They are obligated to help because a parent told them to, but they do have the fringe benefit of developing maturity. They are made to feel, “I am part of a family structure. I count and am valued because I value the members of my family.” Preparation for Shabbos plays a major role in our households. Our youngest children know that they must put away their toys, because Mommy is going to light candles soon and the house must be neat, ready to welcome the Shabbos Queen. As the child grows older, he learns to help more. A child who helped polish the candlesticks or set the Shabbos table, will sit at the table with a special sense of satisfaction: “I will enjoy this, because I worked for this.” Yomim tovim, especially Pesach, present their own challenges. Preparation for the holiday is a lot of work, but if it is shared — and done with an attitude of excitement and anticipation — the work becomes enjoyable. Just listen to two kindergarten kids describe how they washed their toys (and their clothing at the same time). The genuine joy that they feel lasts up to the long-awaited Seder. As we learned from our Sages, the preparation of a mitzvah

Scientists also studied two groups of children: those required to do chores, and those who were exempted in order to concentrate more on schoolwork. To the wonder of the researchers (although not to ours), the children who cleaned their rooms, mowed the grass, or set the tables were generally more successful in life than the studious ones. The research also

is part and parcel of the mitzvah itself. Often it is easier for the mother to say, “I will do it myself, quicker and more thoroughly.” But for the chinuch of your children, request that they pitch in — but don’t forget the praise they deserve for helping. By acknowledging that you can count on them, you are giving your children the best gift of all: inclusion in a loving family. Unfortunately, it’s a known fact that emergency rooms are packed with children (and adults) who have sustained serious injuries during the weeks before Pesach. Cleaning can be extremely hazardous to our health if we don’t take the proper precautions. This is a terrible situation that can be avoided if we are vigilant in following safety precautions, especially when we include our children in the cleaning. Accidents can be prevented.

Important Safety Guidelines:

Do not clean when you’re tired or in a hurry. We tend to push ourselves beyond reasonable limits. More accidents happen when we’re tired. Stop and rest!

Keep children away from matches, fire, and boiling water.

Anyone using strong cleaning fluids should wear plastic protective gloves. Get lots of them in several sizes before the Pesach rush. Keep them where they can be found easily. Discard those that develop holes in the fingertips and use new ones.

Never give kids anything stronger than soap and water.

Young children should not be sent to do errands that are not appropriate for their age, like hagalas keilim.

3 Children should not use spray containers with oven spray, bleach or window cleaner. These caustic chemicals can cause permanent blindness if accidentally sprayed in eyes.

Bleach is dangerous. Use it very carefully. Keep the windows open or even better — work outside. Don’t use it too often, but when you do, rinse it off extremely well. Never use bleach to clean out moldy baby bottles or food containers. Use vinegar instead, or simply discard and get new ones.

Never mix bleach with ammonia. Mixing bleach with ammonia produces poisonous fumes.

Be aware of where your children are. It’s too easy to get caught up in cleaning and then lose track of time and where and what our children are doing.

Never leave young children unsupervised while near water. This includes bathtubs, kiddie pools, and even buckets. Filling a small plastic pool, bath, or sink with warm water for children to wash their toys in is great fun — but only if you’re there to supervise them! When children are splashing or cleaning happily, it may be tempting to leave them alone. Even small amounts of water are a drowning hazard for young children.

Children need to be supervised at all times. They cannot be left alone. Dangerous situations and, worse yet, dangerous people abound. They, too, know we are busy Pesach cleaning.

Prevent dehydration. Make sure everyone is drinking adequate amounts of liquids.

When you clean outside, make sure everyone has hats and uses sunscreen.

Keep your back straight. Lift with your legs. Wear protective, supportive shoes, not crocs or slippers.

Be careful on ladders and step stools. Make sure the kids aren’t climbing on them when you’re not around.

Keep stairs and paths clear of boxes, bags and other clutter. Place bags of garbage and boxes of clutter out of the way so no one trips on them.

W h e n washing windows or clearing out upper cabinets, do not lean too far to either side. Have someone hold the ladder steady for you, if needed.

Be careful when moving large pieces of furniture and appliances.

Don’t move it alone if it’s too heavy!

Be very careful if the floor is wet. Keep children away from slippery, wet floors.

Don’t carry too many things at once, especially on stairs. Make sure you can see over the top of the load you’re carrying.

Always follow cleaning product label safety instructions and recommendations.

Keep windows open and turn on fans to clear out irritating, dangerous chemical fumes.

Wear a mask against dust (especially if you have dust allergies).

Put away all your cleaning supplies when you’re done.

All cleaning products should be placed in a childproof cabinet. Resist the temptation to leave them out because, “I’m going to use them again in a few hours, anyway.”

They’re little, but mighty, and a world unto themselves...

Are you curious about the world around you? If you are reading FYI, then I assume the answer is “yes.” No matter how curious you are, toddlers take the lead. On an average day the typical toddler asks more than 400 questions! Hopefully your kid is happily entertained playing or asking those questions, but in case he’s not, I’ll venture to guess that he might have lapsed into Kvetch Mode — another universal pastime for the crowd of Littles. Does his whining drive you nuts? You’re not alone. In a study to determine the most annoying noise, people were bombarded with newborn cries, the sound of chainsaws, and the serenade of a whining toddler, amongst other sounds. The most annoying? Definitely, the whining toddler. It makes perfect sense, considering that another study proved that a three-year-old boy’s screeching voice is louder than 200 conversing adults in a crowded room… Then again, that might have been a rather informal study, involving said author and her own child... Tired of holes in your little boy’s pants? In the 1600s, boys wore dresses until they were about seven years old. Hmmm… Something to think about... Addicted to shoe shopping and see something you know your one-year-old will love in, oh, roughly 20 years? To get an estimate of her adult shoe-size, just measure her 12 month foot and double the length, then shop to your heart’s content!

Children tend to grow faster during the springtime. I guess that’s where the phrase “growing like a weed” comes from!

Newborns have 300 bones, whereas adults only have 206. During growth, certain bones fuse together and become a single entity instead of separate parts.

People around the world have really unusual traditions when a baby is born: •

In Finland, nearly all babies — regardless of social status — use a cardboard box as their first crib. Looking to update your furniture? Just call your local grocery!

New parents in Pakistan shave their baby’s head during the first month, hoping that the child’s hair will grow back thicker and fuller.

•

The ancient Greeks were after exactly the opposite look: They’d dunk their newborns in an olive oil bath, believing it to prevent hair from growing.

In Brazil, new mothers don’t necessarily receive gifts from all of their visitors; the custom is for the mother to gift the visitor!

•

In India it is customary to toss babies from a 30-foot high roof and into a taut blanket below. They think it brings the baby good luck. I guess if the baby survives, his luck IS pretty good!

BABY BRAIN •

Baby brains grow super fast; so much so that if their bodies were to grow at the same pace as their brains, newborns would weigh 170 pounds by the time they’d reach the one month mark!

A baby’s brain absorbs everything around him, while an adult is able to ignore “background” happenings. Super creative people are thought to retain the ability to absorb info like a baby and then transfer it into productive thoughts.

Babies absorb so much from their surroundings that it’s been noted that infants cry with the intonations of the language they’ll eventually come to speak!

•

The first five years of a child’s life are the most significant when it comes to development of the brain and personality.

•

A child’s brain requires tons of nutrients. Roughly half of a kid’s calorie consumption goes toward fueling the brain.

BRINGING OUT THE BEST There are many ways to boost your child’s mental growth. Here are just a few: •

Acknowledge when Baby babbles. Language development can be sped up if parents respond to a baby’s babble around 80% of the time.

•

Talk to them too! Parents who speak frequently to their babies find that, on average, their kids know roughly 300 more words by the age of two, than children who are rarely spoken to. Reading to your child is also a great way to work on vocabulary. Go to the Wellsprings’ column for brain boosting reading tips!

•

Studies have confirmed that children thrive when they have at least three supportive adults in their lives. Hear that moms? No excuses! Take the kids and go visit your shvigger!

•

The easiest way to make a kid unhappy in life, is to give him whatever he asks for! Permissive parenting has been proven time and again to flop in producing individuals who are satisfied in life. Kids crave the safety of rules, regulations, and authority.

This recipe is simple with very few nonprocessed ingredients, making it a great Pesach treat. It can be used as a nosh for a long yom tov afternoon or as a topping for ice cream or cake. Whichever way you choose to eat the almonds, you’ll probably be reaching for seconds.

INGREDIENTS: • ¾ cup sugar • ¼ cup water • 8 oz almonds

Once it gets really hot, the mixture will start thickening.

Cook the water and sugar on a medium flame.

After the mixture thickens, it will liquidize again and start turning brown.

Remove the sugar mixture from the flame and add the almonds quickly.

Mix the almonds well so that they are well coated.

Using a slotted spoon, remove almonds from the pot.

Spread the almonds on a cookie sheet lined with baking paper.

Once cooled, break apart or serve as clusters.

In Wisconsin, the winners were Ted Cruz for the Republicans and Bernie Sanders for the Democrats. Cruz got 36 of the stateâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 42 delegates, with the other 6 going to Trump. Sanders won 48 delegates to Hillary Clintonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 38. It was a big win for Cruz as, until a couple of weeks ago, it had looked like a state Trump would carry. It is becoming clearer with each passing day that the Republican candidates will have to grab every delegate they can get to finagle a nomination in July.

APRIL 9TH The Democrats held the Wyoming Primary on April 9th and for the 7th contest in a row, Bernie Sanders took home the win. There were only 14 delegates at stake and they were divided evenly

to ultimately defeat the Democrats in the general election.

APRIL 19TH In a scene that is very unusual in New York, all candidates from both parties have descended upon the state to campaign. Because New York generally holds their primaries among the last few states of the primary election cycle, by the time primary day rolls around in New York, the nominees for both parties have usually been determined. In this election cycle, neither party has had a candidate secure the nomination as of yet, so New York, with its large number of delegates, has become very important to the candidates. Bernie Sanders, John Kasich, and Ted Cruz visited Brooklyn last week with Cruz focusing his visit on the Chareidi community. Because there is only a relatively small number of registered Republicans in New York, and New York is a closed primary state (which means Republicans and Democrats can only vote for a candidate of their own party in the primaries), Cruz believes that gaining the support of the Chareidi community that generally votes as a bloc will give him a good chance of winning the districts that our community resides

It is becoming clearer with each passing day that the Republican candidates will have to grab every delegate they can get to finagle a nomination in July. with seven going to each candidate. In terms of delegates, it was not a great victory for Sanders, but going into the next few contests, all of which will be held in the primary liberal northeast, it held significance in terms of the momentum shift from Hillary to Bernie. It will be quite a feat if Bernie does manage to reverse the deficit he has in the delegate count, but even getting this close is an impressive feat. And, of course, for the Republicans, the fact that Clinton and Sanders are campaigning against each other can only help them in their goal

For the Republicans, Colorado and Wyoming have unusual primary voting methods. Delegates in Colorado are selected through a process that starts with the March 1st caucuses and culminates at the state convention on April 9th. Of the state’s 37 delegates, 21 pledged their support for Ted Cruz. The Wyoming precinct caucuses on March 1st do not bind any delegates, but they start a delegate selection process that culminates at the state convention on April 14-16. Delegates from both Colorado and Wyoming can be bound or unbound. The Cruz campaign understood the ground game all along and have wisely been focusing on gaining as many delegates as possible throughout this campaign. They have been campaigning among delegates in states such as Colorado and Wyoming and other states with unbound candidates — candidates who can cast their vote for whichever candidate they support, rather than who their state chose — and tried to secure their support, rather than focusing only on the popular vote. Trump’s campaign has only woken up to this reality in the last couple of weeks when they lost a few important contests and the likelihood of Trump winning the nomination became slimmer. They have hired a few new campaign operatives whose focus it will be to figure out how to get Trump to the 1,237 delegates he needs to win.

As soon as Eizer L’Yeshivos gets wind of a case of a bachur in need, we research the situation, evaluate the boy, and determine which makom Torah would be most appropriate for this boy’s growth. We contact yeshivos directly to make all necessary arrangements, and assist the bachur in preparing for the farher. LOMOH NIGARA Accepted into suitable yeshivos, these boys often find themselves drowning once again, unable to keep up. A personal mentor or private chavrusah can be the life vest that helps them stay afloat. Thus, the project, Lomoh Nigara, was launched. With one-on-one support, they can reach their full potential, saving the work invested by Eizer L’Yeshivos from falling to the wayside.

10 I hate Ritalin!

It is a blessing, but also a bane. It is powerful — but often too powerful. The dosage is a struggle to get right each time. Some days it turns Nachman into a zombie; sometimes it doesn’t work and I have keep adding a few more specks and then wait half an hour to see if it takes effect — and that can take the better part of a (crazy) day. And the length of its effect is hard to predict. The ten-hour pill now lasts anywhere between four and eight hours and the four-hour dose can last one-and-a-half to four hours. The Ritalin goes out of Nachman’s system with no warning, and that means a race to get the next dose down his throat and a half-hour of craziness (in the best scenario) until it takes effect. If the Ritalin fizzles out unexpectedly while we’re out of the house, it’s tough luck for me. It means coming home to a whirling, spinning scene, often in perfect coincidence with supper and bedtime. I wish I can get Ritalin out of our life forever. A cornucopia of voices fills my head: Do you set enough limits at home? Is he acting up to get your attention? Do you read books to him? Do you sit on the floor and play with him? Do you have confidence in him? The questions often fired at me by well-

My best intentions and wishes and confidence won’t just throw ADHD out the window. It is here, and I had better face the truth. meaning, sympathetic onlookers to Nachman fiascos now flash big, blazing question marks. Can I be sure my parenting is not instigating his behavior? Can I be absolutely certain that Nachman really needs medication? Maybe more confidence in him will do it. Maybe better parenting will make everything better. I hear more voices, now of the Ritalin naysayers. Ritalin is a drug. Ritalin stunts growth. Ritalin can have far-reaching side effects. That’s it. I am stopping with Ritalin! I decide determinately. If I’ll be a better mother, Nachman will be better trained. I’ll start a reward and punishment chart and he’ll know better than to test my limits. I’ll be firmer with him and he’ll know there’s no room for nonsense. I will do it! Nachman walks in from cheder and I flash him a bright smile. Today, my boy, you will prove yourself! No Ritalin for you! I am so desperate to be Ritalin-free that I actually believe it. And I believe it so much that it actually seems to turn into reality. I am sitting on the porch with the baby and Nachman joins me on the ledge. He sits and looks out. I look at Nachman and pat him on the back. That’s my boy. No Ritalin for you. You’ll prove it.

I feed the kids cookies and bananas and everyone’s munching happily. I’m feeding the kids and we’re all quiet and content, I think in wonderment. Suddenly, Nachman rushes into the house and I hear a suspicious thump. And another one. I peek into the kitchen and watch a shower of goodies and miscellaneous perishables raining down from the counter. Nachman reaches into the top cabinet and grasps a can of mushrooms — “Nooooo….!” I only manage to scream as I watch the can

plate. Nachman scratches the green crayon hard over the whole page. I smile. This is good therapy for him. Chavy gurgles under the mini table, and I experience a happily-ever-after moment. I already write the script in my head: The child was thought to be hyperactive, but parental attention, confidence, and desire brought out his latent abilities, and the mother and her boy lived in harmony and joy ever after. Nachman jumps suddenly and there is an otherworldly screech coming from under him. Chavy is under his feet and they are mercilessly squelching her back. He is jumping up and down on twelve-monthold Chavy. I yelp and shove Nachman off Chavy. I scoop her up and stroke her flaming face as she hollers. My heart racing, I take in the scene and the fairy tale evaporates in a poof. Nachman is laughing as he continues jumping, toppling the table with well-aimed kicks. Chavy is hollering and coughing and sputtering. I am pale and shaking all over. We are not living happily ever after. Reality hits me hard. My best intentions and wishes and confidence won’t just throw ADHD out the window. It is here, and I had better face the truth. I rush to prepare Nachman’s Ritalin dose. The illusion is over, but I’m still not giving up my dream of living happily ever after.

READING TO BABIES: WHY, WHEN, AND HOW When my grandfather recently visited, I wasn’t shocked that my daughters foisted book after book on him, begging him to read. You see, as a confirmed bookworm, my children have it in their genes. But there are some deliberate steps you can take to help your child look at reading as fun, and not a chore. Instilling a love for reading is a powerful gift to give your child. Early language and literacy development begins in the first three years of life, being closely linked to a child’s earliest experiences with books and stories. The interactions that young children have with such literacy materials as books, paper, and crayons, and with the adults in their lives, are the building blocks for language, reading and writing development. This understanding of early literacy development complements the current research supporting the critical role of early experiences in shaping brain development. Recent research supports an interactive and experiential process of learning spoken and written language skills that begins in early infancy. The statistics and basic results of many studies are all the same — children who are exposed to language and literacy in the infant, toddler, and preschool years are much better prepared to succeed in school.

How can you introduce books to young children? For infants and babies, try books made from soft cloth, shiny vinyl, and sturdy cardboard. They may mouth the pages, attempting to explore and become familiar with the world around them. Colorful pictures, simple text and rhyme will elicit a response, even from a little one. Be sure to choose books that can endure exploration (but expect that not all books will last forever!). To foster a love for books, try these tips: • Read to your child frequently. Read to your child throughout the day. Establish regular times for reading during the day, and find other opportunities to read. Start or end the day with a book. Read to your child after play to help settle her down. During mealtime, you have a captive audience, so make use of it and read. • Use puppets. Use a puppet or doll to tell or be characters in the story. • Get in character. Wear a costume, add sound effects, or use special props to highlight your story. • Personalize It. A READING CHECKLIST (U.S. DOE) There are many ways that you can encourage your child to become a reader. Here are questions that you can ask yourself to ensure that you are on track: For babies (from six weeks to one year) • Do I provide a comfortable place for our story time? Is my child happy here? • Am I showing my child the pictures in the book? Am I changing the tone of my voice as I read to show emotion and excitement? • Am I paying attention to how my child responds? What does he or she especially like? Do I recognize when my child is tired and ready to stop?

Tammy’s Shiurim To Take the Monsey Community by Storm

breathing — yes, even breathing, are impossible with ALS. She was so young—barely in her forties, with an infant and young children who were depending on her. She had one married daughter and another in shidduchim. What happened next defies human comprehension. Tammy made a choice: Instead of being broken by her fate, allowing ALS to get her, Tammy decided to “get it” first. I confess. Cleaning and scrubbing the gas range, fridge, and freezer is not something I dream about with a wistful smile on my face. If you get a chance to dream about anything this week, then you’re quite the lucky one. So dream on about your gas range. They practically clean by themselves through dreaming. Practically speaking, if I’m trying to be practical, this is soooo not practical. Being practical sounds way too confusing. Let’s just have fun and skip the practicalities.

OVEN When you move your gas range, make sure all your kids stand in a row in the kitchen. As you pick your way through questionable items that fell behind and under the range in the span of the past 365 days, hand them out to whichever child it belongs. The lonely fork belongs to you. There are four options when cleaning your oven: Your Cleaning Lady: Leave her in the kitchen and go. Run fast. Out of the house. Your Husband: Leave him in the kitchen and go. Run fast. Out out out. Oh well. If the first two options don’t work, I’m so sorry. The other two options are basically, well, it comes down to You and You. Self cleaning the oven is the quickest way to do the oven, of course. However, it’s not the best option. The fuse sometimes

bursts as the heat is way higher than the normal 350-550 cooking range. You can use St. Moritz or Easy-off. But I am not a big fan of this method either. The chemicals are so strong. We get back to our trusty baking soda and vinegar, which will do the best job once again. Make a paste with baking soda. Spread it on the inside of the oven and let sit overnight, about 10-12 hours. Take a wet rag and wipe away as much as you can. The baking soda will have turned brown at this point, so you will need to use a few shmattes. Use a spray bottle with vinegar and shpritz away any residue that stayed over.

STOVETOP Remove your grates and put them in your sink with hot, soapy water. Scrub the

ones that need scrubbing. If you need anything stronger than soap, soaking it in vinegar for a few hours will do the trick. Rubbing alcohol works wonders for the stovetop, but it is flammable so extra caution is needed. Soft scrub works well, too. I don’t use my oven and range for a full day after I clean it.

FRIDGE AND FREEZER • Empty the fridge. Sort out the food. Toss anything that’s past its prime stage of life. The duck sauce, soy sauce, teriyaki sauce, marinara sauce, hot sauce, and other nameless sauces are quite okay to keep (unless your minhag regarding sauces which contain chometz differs). Just make sure they are not there since last year Pesach. Just saying. • Remove drawers and shelves and place them in the sink. Scrub the drawers with a sponge and dish soap. Air dry. • Move and unplug your refrigerator. Scrub the floor around and where the fridge stood. Spray the interior with a multipurpose spray. Wipe down. Use an old toothbrush to wipe the seams. Careful with the rubber seals. They can tear. • Plug in fridge, and return drawers and shelves. Wipe down bottles and jars before putting them back in. • For Stainless Steel exterior, try Magic Stainless Steel Cleaner Aerosol. Amazing! White vinegar works like a charm as well. Otherwise use the multipurpose spray you used for inside the fridge. • Repeat steps with your freezer. If you have a thick layer of ice on your freezer walls, the temperature is set too high. The ice takes about 10 hours to defrost, so manually chip away ice with rubbing alcohol and a knife.

WIPE DOWN TABLE AND CHAIRS To avoid serving food every few minutes, leave the chairs on the table for as long as you can. When I say as long as you can, I mean about a week. Okay, it can backfire too, with the kids running to the neighbors and begging for snacks

and totally humiliating you. But hey, to each its own.

BATHROOMS I’m keeping this short and sweet. Literally. I don’t know how big your bathroom is and how much closet/ shelf space you have or how many bathrooms you have in your home, but one thing I do know. My bathroom lock is forever broken because comes morning and the kids are banging on the door for someone to come out. So I keep the bare minimum stuff in there, to keep the people in there the bare minimum time. I know, I know. I’m a genius. • Pine-Sol Original should be your go-to multipurpose cleanser for the bathroom. It leaves mirrors streak-free and removes scum from shower tiles. I use paper towels in the bathroom to wipe everything down. They absorb the dust and germs much better and when done you can just discard them. • Use your handheld vacuum for the floors. Most of them are excellent for bare floors and getting into edges. • Last time I asked my dentist, he did indeed confirm that each child needs only one toothbrush at a time. So all the extra ones can go bye-bye. Save two for cleaning. • Bandaids are a treat in my home. No, I can’t substitute a bandaid for a lollipop (trust me, I’ve tried), but the little ones are so happy when they have an imaginary boo-boo, that they absolutely need six bandaids ASAP. I Keep them in a ziplock bag, divided by size. • Hairbrushes: Do you really need 23 of them? Remove hair with a pencil and then shampoo brushes. You should do this evWhile you’re getting rid of the ery two weeks or so. you don’t need, here’s a brushes • Cotton balls and Q-tips e must-hav brush: Paul Mitchell 427 should be stored in a Paddle Brush closed container since dust settles on them. • Everything else, wipe down with a damp cloth. Discard outdated creams and soaps.

I love the conversation I overheard the other day while I was shopping for sushi. I mean, Pine Sol. Pine Sol. Strictly shopping only for Pesach products. (Okay, maybe I eavesdropped.) “Hi Rechy, Where are you up to with Pesach cleaning?” “Oy, Gitty. It’s ridiculous. I can’t get to myself. It’s taking forever this year.” “Why? What’s happening?” Gitty asked in concern. Rechy sighed. “This year,” she lamented, “We’re doing things a little differently, and the pressure is ridiculous. I mean, nobody told me that matching everyone in different outfits for every meal would be so tough. “Every meal?” Gitty countered. “Yeah,” Rechy answered with another deep, deep sigh. “We’re going away this year to this 5-star hotel so I better have all kids matching. Different outfits for every meal. That’s eight meals, plus chol hamoed, breakfasts, and lounging around. You do the math. It’s draining”. Okay, at this point, I walked away as not to open my mouth and tell her I can offer my services and maybe a good therapist too (my other specialty). So far, none of the hotels I called will accept my food stamp card or Fidelis card, so home we stay. We only use products that we make on our own. We use very few ingredients, but there are some that we do buy. I let my kids eat a lot of prepared foods, but the adults eat only heimishe foods. As long as it has a hechsher I am happy to buy everything. We buy products, but are scrupulous and limit them.

What are some unique minhagim that your family has on Pesach? We don’t use bananas on Pesach.

We use a separate knife solely for peeling and another one for cutting food.

We are the opposite of most people. While most people are makpid to use only round matzah for the sedarim, we are makpid to eat only square! We also eat only beef (not chicken), so whatever we save on the matzah, we spend on meat!

We don’t eat milchigs the entire Pesach (no coffee!). We kasher our own chicken

We only use spring water.

We cook up sugar with water before yom tov, and this is the only way we use sugar.

We only use water that has been prepared before Kol Chamira is said, so if there is chometz in it, it becomes batal.

We make our own wine.

We wash dishes right away. We don’t leave them sitting in the sink.

We don’t use plastic goods on Pesach.

After Dayanu, everyone goes around the table and hits each other with leeks. My father wears a white kappel for both sedarim, and we use schmaltz on Pesach.

We don’t eat gebrokts on Acharon shel Pesach.

By Magid, my husband walks around with a bag of matzah over his shoulder and says, “‫אזוי‬ ‫זענען די אידן ארויס פון‬ ‫מצרים‬.”

We put aside any utensil or towel that falls on the floor, until after Pesach.

The men don’t converse throughout the Seder.

On the second day of yom tov we eat a special kugel made from apples and egg noodles, called the Esther Kugel, because the Purim story happened on Pesach.

What’s your favorite Pesach food? Can you share the recipe? Snow Kisses: Beat together 9 egg whites, 1 cup sugar. Bake on 200° for three hours.

Fruit Leather: Cook 12 apples with very little water on a tiny flame for 2 hours, blend, spread on a cookie sheet. Bake on 250 for 2.5 hours and break into pieces.

Sugared Almonds. We cover almonds with sugar which was boiled in water and then bake it for 20 minutes.

Apple Crumble: Fill half 9x13 with sliced apples. Mix walnuts and sugar and sprinkle onto apples. Bake on 350°.

Veal Pocket with Matzah Stuffing. Saute onions and celery in some oil. Add 4 cups of broken matzah (farfel) and 1 ¼ cups boiling water and 1 cup chicken soup. Wait until the matzah absorbs the water, then add 2 eggs, 1 tsp. salt, ¼ tsp pepper and some paprika. The stuffing can be frozen and then defrosted when ready to be used. Stuff in a pocket in a rack of veal, no spices on roast necessary. If there is extra stuffing, place under veal. Bake uncovered until brown, approx 1 ½ hours. When water evaporates, you can add more gravy. When very brown cover lightly with foil.

Potatochip Scrambled Eggs: Fry thin slices of potato. Pour scrambled eggs over the fried potato chips.

Ice cream: Beat 10 eggs and 1 cup sugar

Grivelach: Saute schmaltz and mix with cooked potato.

Hashbrowns: Shred potatoes and fry on both sides until crispy. Sprinkle with salt when finished.

Scrambled Eggs with Sauteed Onions: We use schmaltz for oil and whisk up eggs, folding in sauteed onions. Delicious!

1-2-3 Cookies: 1 cup sugar, 2 eggs, 3 cups ground nuts. It’s delicious!

Orange Pudding: Boil 2 cups of orange juice. Add sugar to taste and simmer. Add potato starch, stirring constantly until pudding like consistency.

Any Fruit Ices: We juice grape fruits and freeze with some sugar and water and then blend it and freeze it again.

Potato Blintzes: Use any crepe recipe. Repurpose any leftover cooked potatoes and mash it with sauteed onions. Delicious side dish!

Mortgage Contingency by Ann Zeilingold A realtor told me last week that he would be presenting an offer without a mortgage contingency. I asked him, “Why?” He told me that in order to get an offer accepted in today’s times, it has to be as strong as possible. He also said since his client was putting so much down, at 60%, the buyer for sure would get a mortgage — and therefore it was no risk at all. He was not asking my professional opinion; he was simply stating a fact, as he saw it. What is “mortgage contingency,” and is it something that a prospective buyer should waive? And if yes, under what circumstances? A mortgage contingency is the clause in a real estate contract that states that if the purchaser does not get a mortgage commitment by a specific time that is agreed upon and stated in the contract of sale, then the seller will refund the buyer’s initial down payment and the deal will be terminated. Waiving the mortgage contingency basically says that the buyer cannot get back his down payment that was given at contract signing if he does not get the mortgage financing that he needs in order to purchase the home; basically the down payment is NOT protected under the contract of sale. I posed this question to veteran real estate attorney, Isaac Scheiner from Monsey, NY. He said, “While waiving a mortgage contingency is a wonderful negotiating tool, it is only for the right buyer. I always ask my client if they have a backup plan, which can include another source of funds (even if not ideal), or perhaps if the buyer would be able to reasonably quickly find a cash buyer to take his place and close.” I also asked this question to Tirtza Beer, #1 real estate salesperson in Rockland in 2015, according to the Greater Hudson Value MLS. She said, “It’s not a good idea to waive it, but in emergency situations — such as if the buyers really want a specific house or it’s a great deal, there are other buyers vying for the same home, especially other cash buyers, and this is the only way to get the seller to accept the offer — but even then,

Some examples of the unexpected is: The borrower loses his job; a derogatory on the credit comes up and the loan is no longer approvable; the taxes are higher than expected and interest rates go up and suddenly the Debt to Income ratio doesn’t work... There are other situations that can arise, and waiving the mortgage contingency can be dangerous for a buyer. It is not the norm in the real estate world to present offers that waive the mortgage contingencies, but it is a phenomenon that I am seeing more and more as buyers become desperate looking for homes and they lose them when they are negotiating against All Cash offers. Sellers are in the driver’s seat and can make demands when they have multiple offers. Presenting a strong offer is key, but know the ramifications in the event that things don’t go as planned.
