chesed

Dear Neighbor, e are excited to introduce the new Yedei Chesed to our community. Our new look reflects the changes taking place at Yedei Chesed. As you surely know, Yedei Chesed has been providing vital services and support to individuals with disabilities and their families in the greater Monsey community for over 20 years. To meet a growing need, we are expanding our focus to include those who have been unable to access services due to a lack of state funding. People who turn to organizations such as Yedei Chesed must meet certain specific guidelines determined by the NYS Office for People with Developmental Disabilities to be considered eligible for services. Yedei Chesed is the resource for people who fall short of those guidelines. We are committed to helping anyone dealing with a developmentally disabled family member – even those who may not be considered eligible according to state guidelines. The physical and emotional strain on families struggling with a family member with special needs is huge. These families are in need of our services and we want to be able to offer them whether or not the state considers them to be eligible. Yet funding is not available for those who don't qualify through government channels and the budgets of even qualifying individuals is shrinking. Yedei Chesed is therefore turning to the community to help bring our important services to our neighbors struggling with a loved one with a developmental disability. Within the next few days, you will be receiving a letter introducing our new look and expanded mission. Please respond generously as we are counting on our neighbors to help us make Yedei Chesed the community resource for anyone experiencing a developmental disability. Your contribution will help ensure that no one is turned away for not being “disabled enough.” By supporting Yedei Chesed, you will be helping to ensure that every family in our community in need of our services will receive the support that they need. In that zechus, may you and yours be blessed with a chag kosher v’sameach. Sincerely,

QUICK CLICS

In the Purim issue on page #44, M.U. mentioned that Clics work well in the washing machine. I’ve found that the easy way to wash it in the wash machine is by putting the Clics into either a big (or a few smaller) mesh bags, or you can use a pillowcase that has a zipper. Enjoy doing it the fast way! Mrs. T. Feder

MY OVEN REALLY IS MY FRIEND!

I tried using the oven techniques featured in the Purim edition and was quite surprised when I learned more than just a new way to use my oven… Taanis Esther I put a package of orzo into a bekeleh and filled it up with water, covered it, and placed it into the oven where steak was slowly baking at 275°. I left it there for about an hour and a half. When I took it out, I served the kids a portion and later returned it a 200° oven until after Megillah laining. When I pulled it out, I was thrilled to see an egg-less lukshen kugel! It held together just as well as any kugel with eggs. I plan to to play around with this technique to figure out minimum baking times, and next time add flavorings to make it sweeter. It will be the first time I’ve had a kugel in years,

I’d like to try the cranberry salmon fish featured in The Monsey View. Do I serve it at room temperature, warm, or cold from fridge? Thank you, A Reader The fish is best served cold or at room temperature. Like any marinated fish, it should sit in the marinade for a while before being served. Serving it warm out of the oven compromises its flavor. Leah Stern

CORRECTION FOR MY OVEN MY FRIEND

Somehow, two paragraphs of my article “My Oven, My Friend” were combined, omitting some vital information. Here is the correction: Pickled beef, lamb, veal, and poultry can also be baked in the oven. Rinse the meat well under cold running water for a few minutes. Put into pan with 1-2” of water, cover tightly with foil and bake at

300-325° for 2 ½ to 3 hours. (Bake poultry at 300°.) Test with fork for softness. If still hard, place back into oven for and additional ½ hour. The pickled meat will be a bit saltier than if you use the traditional method of boiling and changing the water. On a personal note: A few days before Purim I put a pickled beef roll and a pickled turkey roll into the oven. I left for an important appointment, intending to call home after three hours to tell someone to turn off the oven. It completely slipped my mind, (multitasking, anyone?) and when I returned home five hours later, the smell of baking meat reminded me that I had something in the oven. I expected to find the meet disintegrated beyond use. To my surprise, the meats were just fine. I sliced them when they were thoroughly chilled. (I made the slices slightly thicker to compensate for their softness). Not a crumb was left over. P. Samuels

CONFUSED AND CONCERNED

I’m really enjoying your publication every week. I loved the previous serial! I waited for it each week, but my neighbors and I just don’t get the new serial. Can you offer some sort of explanation? Is Sara Binet a frum lady with Preserve Ramapo ideals? She’s mad that the nonJewish neighbors moved out and dreaded new

Inbox Talk of Town

‫בעזהשי"ת‬

developments being built what does that mean? She didn’t want frum neighbors? It says she moved far out of the frum neighborhood, so why is she living on Herrick Ave? (We don’t live there.) We’re getting fed up. Maybe we can be clued into the background of the story? Thanks! Looking forward to enjoying this story, too. EP

THE AUTHOR RESPONDS:

Dear EP, Thank you for your letter and for your kind words about The Monsey View and my previous novel, Jerusalem Stone. I hear that there’s some confusion over the time frame of the story, as well as Sara’s hashkafos. I’ll try to explain: Sara moved away from Central Monsey, and the streets she grew up in, about ten years ago, in 2005. She could not afford her house in Calvert/Carlton area and decided to purchase in Spring Valley, in the Herrick/Decatur area. It was a difficult move for many reasons, but also because the neighborhood was not heimishe at that time. Since she was still able to enjoy the perks of Monsey life — like her big backyard, trees all around, and her privacy — she learned to live with the drawbacks. Then, ten years later, in the world of 2016 we enjoy today, the Spring Valley neighborhood that was once so quiet and far from the heartbeat of Monsey, changed face. This is a bracha, but also a challenge.

Sarah found it hard to be priced out of her own home; losing her business in the process. She’s having a very hard time with the dirt and chaos that has never been part of the Monsey landscape she knew. When her grandparents had moved to Monsey to be part of Beis Medrash Elyon, Monsey was a woodland and a beautiful town in nature. Now, Monsey is primarily windows and porches and bikes and traffic and a flood of new people, and Sara is experiencing the loss of what she was used to. Change is a very confusing blessing for us all. And in the ambiguousness of change, we like clarity and tend to divide people into narrow stereotypes: The “Preserve Ramapos” versus the “Carriage Parking Lot” owners. The developers, the Brooklynites, the schoolless children versus the way it was. In truth, most of us fall on the continuum in between, and change positions based on our current needs. Are we home owners? Home buyers? Young families? Retirees? Do we send our kids on buses every morning? Do we sit in traffic on the way to work? Do we enjoy stopping for a luxury coffee in the morning? Do we miss the groceries with tarnished linoleum floors? You asked for the background of this story, and I think it’s a fantastic question that might help shed light: Please note that Sara is a figment of my imagination, and that I myself am in a very different position as

A single Diamond says a lot… It says you are set in stone, and that you care to find the perfect gem to symbolize your bond. But that’s just half the story. You share a life full of twists, turns, a growing family, and special personal chapters.

Sara, having moved to Monsey last year. When I moved here, I quickly realized that Monsey as I remembered it was no more, and that it was in the growing pangs of changing at a rapid pace, so much so, that a lot of our infrastructure couldn’t catch up right away. The growth, the change, and the lack is what generates conflict. Conflict with housing, development, schools, shopping, layout, and the personality of the people here. Where I see conflict, I think story. Story, because people are nuanced, and it is through action, realization, growth and change that we become who we are, and we come to own our stories. Sara is like one of us all. She loves that Yidden are growing and that Monsey is burgeoning with Jewish life, kein yirbu. She hates giving up her privacy, comfort and sense of being settled for that. She is excited to meet her new neighbors. She wishes they are more like her and less like the people she doesn’t share a common language with. She is living the conundrum of everyday life, where we want what we want, but it contradicts with something else that we want. Life has a way of figuring these things out for us. In the story, Sara is now facing dilemmas that directly challenge her relationship with the town she grew up in. How will that impact her worldview, her choices, her actions, her neighborliness? Monsey seemed ripe to explore what our own story — what our conflicts and “sides” are. We want growth, but we were established by certain ideals that we want to maintain. We want unity, but we also want preservation. Chany Rosengarten

THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS:

Before running this serial there was a lot of discussion behind the scenes at The Monsey View regarding the concerns that you’ve brought up. We came to the decision to publish the serial because of Chany’s incredible ability to access and present the emotions of each character, to throw twists and turns along the way, and then surprise us with a great ending. With Chany’s powerful pen, we can assure you that you’ll be satisfied with the final outcome. Two by Fours is the story of one woman searching to find herself in a life that spins and turns, leaving her tangled in a conflicted web of emotions. It is the story of every man’s quest in life — to pull oneself from the depth of negative emotion and rise to a healthier place. Will Sara be able to do that? Stay tuned!

Your Voice AVOIDING DANGEROUS CHEMICAL BURNS

Every year when I go shopping for Pesach I am horrified to see that harsh cleaning chemicals are put b’davka right at children’s eye level. I am terrified to imagine what could happen, ch”v, if a parent becomes busy choosing items (remember, Pesach items are completely different from the ones we use all year, and take more concentration when choosing!) and their child becomes bored, waiting to move on... Every year children are taken into the ER with terrible chemical burns, and if you’ve ever seen what a chemical burn looks like, you’d shudder in terror. They say it’s incredibly painful, can cause nerve damage, and even blindness. Children have even been known to confuse liquid chemical with drinks, severely burning their insides! Personally, I don’t see why people even bring these caustic chemicals into their homes; our bubbies and zaides never had them; they used only elbow-grease and safe products to scrub away chometz. These oven-cleaners and the like are extremely dangerous! At the very least, grocery stores have an achrayos to put them far out of reach of our little darlings!

THEY NEVER GIVE UP

Dear Monseyites, Thieves are out to steal your hard-earned money. They have many methods, some of which I am sure you’ve heard about. There is the IRS scam where you are called and threatened; you need to be aware that the IRS will never do such a thing. Then there is the “I’m stuck in a foreign country and have been robbed and need money wired to a bank” scam. There is also the “We’ve kidnapped your husband/wife/ child, and will release him/her with a deposit” scam. Chaverim just recently saved a guy $8,900 on one of these. They got a call about a Yid who was panicking, and heading to the bank with cash. A Chaverim member ran inside and stopped the man right before he made the transfer, boruch Hashem. And now there is a new one. I just got a call on my cell phone that I am the winner of a free stay in the Marriott Hotel. I hung up right away. If I had “claimed” my prize, the scammers would have no doubt requested my SS number. After hanging up, I returned the call and a heimishe Monsey man answered, having no clue what I was talking about when I asked him if he had anything to do with the Marriott Hotel. Scammers are now stealing phone numbers. If you receive a call from a number that appears local (it may even be your home phone number!) requesting money or information (especially if there are threats made against you or friends/family), do not hesitate to contact Chaverim to make sure its a scam. As told to: Basya Lev

I was recently in Eretz Yisroel with my eighteen-year-old daughter. Our Rebbe, the Skverer Rebbe, was in Bnei Brak that day visiting with another Gadol. We were standing outside, off to the side with many other women, waiting for both Rebbes to come outside the building for a kabbalas panim. Suddenly, the ponytail holder in my daughter’s hair snapped to the ground, broken. Her long hair was now loose and my daughter felt very embarrassed. There weren’t even any stores nearby to purchase another one. As I quickly tried to think of a solution, my eyes looked down - and I noticed a ponytail holder on the wrist of a cute little girl standing next to me. I pointed to her wrist and asked her if she needed it. She replied “no,” took it off her wrist, and handed it to me. I thanked her and told her that she was a malach from Himmel. I handed the ponytail holder to my daughter and she quickly pulled her hair back. We were both grateful to Hashem for putting it into this girl’s head to put an extra holder around her wrist before she left her house.

Feeling Stressed Out? If you feel that time is flying by, you’re right! We were eagerly awaiting Purim, and now we’re just a few weeks to Pesach. Before you know it, Shavous will be right around the corner. Do you ever feel that you’re running around like a chicken without a head? Some of my clients explained that they feel like they’re “walking around in circles,” without even a minute to sit down and take a deep breath — let alone to prepare food! And are you always last on the list to eat? Is this because there just isn’t enough time in the day? Well, if you set aside a few minutes to sit down and eat some healthy food and to take a few deep breaths, your energy and stress levels will be in much better shape. In fact, you’ll be surprised by how much more you will accomplish. It’s a pretty funny thing that you don’t have enough time to eat, when what you really need is more energy! You’re probably so stressed out that you’ve forgotten to relax. So, for the next few articles, I’d like to share a few good “stress-busters,” plus a selection of foods that will give you energy and keep your hunger in check. Please do your very best to follow these five things (I know you don’t have much time!) so that you can discover how much better you will feel.

It’s a pretty funny thing that you don’t have enough time to eat, when what you really need is more energy!

1. Purchase organic peppermint tea (from either a health store or the general supermarket), and drink 3-4 cups throughout the day. A simple way to prepare it is to place four tea bags in a cup of boiling water in the morning, and to leave it out on the counter as a reminder to drink it regularly. Just pour yourself some tea and add hot water whenever you want a cup. Why peppermint tea? Well, the health benefits are countless. It’s a great nerve tonic, first of all. Peppermint tea soothes the mind and alleviates stress. In addition, it’s a natural appetite suppressant for those who need it. It gives you energy without that crash — just nice, clean energy. Plus, peppermint tea helps clear acne and blemished skin. These are all great benefits for a tea that you may even have lying around in your cabinet. 2. Even if you’re not much of a turkey fan, give it a try; it’s well worth eating for the effect it will have on you. Turkey is a very good source of tryptophan, an amino acid that your body converts into serotonin. High serotonin levels will help you stay calm and manage stress, and they produce an overall good feeling. 3. Dark green vegetables like spinach, kale, and arugula are rich in folate, which helps produce mood-regulating neurotransmitters like serotonin and dopamine. In turn, sufficient serotonin and dopamine levels will help you feel relaxed, happy, and calm. Try these leafy greens in their fresh and raw form (they come pre-checked), either

with salad dressing or straight out of the box. 4. If you feel overwhelmed, and the last thing you can do right now is take a nap, (or even sit down for a few minutes) try watching everything around you as an observer. Everything becomes part of a performance, including your kids’ tantrums, the cleaning lady who did an awful job, the mountainous pile of laundry, the teenager struggling with endless crises, and the grocery order that never arrived. When you’re dealing with hungry kids, and your two-year-old took his chometz’dig snack up to the bedroom that was already

cleaned for Pesach, just watch the play going on around you. Who knows? You might even break into a smile. 5. Dark chocolate is a great mood elevator. However, if you’re a milchig chocolate fan, note that it won’t do the trick. It might give you a quick energy burst, but you’ll come crashing down quickly as well, and you’ll need more — which, needless to say, is not a smart idea if you’re watching your weight. But dark chocolate of at least 72% and higher has a chemical called anandamide, a neurotransmitter that temporarily blocks pain and depression. There is good reason behind people claiming

that they feel good after eating dark chocolate. You don’t need a lot, though – the trick is to take just a square or two at a time, with tea or light coffee. With these tips, just watch and see how Erev Pesach is an exciting time. So, when things get tough, take some chocolate, sip some tea, and enjoy yourself until next week’s tips.

Parshas

Shemini By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum

Parshas Shemini begins on the eighth day after the inauguration of the Mishkan, following the initiation of Aharon and his sons into the kehunah. Moshe Rabbeinu instructed Aharon to command the B’nei Yisrael: “K’chu s’ir izim l’chatas…” “Take a male goat as a sin offering...” (Vayikra 9:3) The Toras Kohanim states that this goat served as a tikkun for the time Yosef HaTzaddik’s brothers slaughtered a goat in order to dip Yosef’s clothing in its blood after they sold him into slavery. Likewise, parts of the Mishkan were built through the donation of a machtzis heshekel per person, which the Midrash states was a tikkun for the twenty dinarim of silver that Yosef’s brothers received when they sold him into slavery (Bereishis Rabbah, 84:17). The twenty dinarim of silver the ten brothers received were equivalent to five shekalim of silver, which works out to a half-shekel per brother — a machtzis heshekel. Many people tend to think in broad categories, such as, “The brothers sold Yosef.” The reality is that each action we perform consists of myriads of details — such as receiving the money for Yosef, or dipping his clothing in blood as part of the ruse — and each detail is its own action. Each action that is performed as

58 / THE MONS E Y V IE W

part of an aveira requires its own tikkun. Thankfully, this works with mitzvos as well. Each action that a person does as part of the performance of a mitzvah brings its own reward. There is a story about the rebbetzin of the Vilna Gaon that illustrates this point. The rebbetzin and her friend used to go from door to door col-

Every action we perform, every movement of our body, and every utterance of our lips is weighed and measured with laser-sharp precision, and judged in light of the big picture of our intention in performing that act. lecting tzedakah together. One day, they came to the home of a donor and found that the woman was not at home. As they were walking away, they noticed the woman approaching in the distance. The rebbetzin’s

friend raised her hand and pointed out the woman, saying that the woman was on her way, and they should approach her for a donation. Later, after the friend had passed away, she came to the rebbetzin in a dream and revealed that she had been rewarded immeasurably for the simple act of raising her hand as part of doing the mitzvah of tzedakah. Every action we perform, every movement of our body, and every utterance of our lips is weighed and measured with laser-sharp precision, and judged in light of the big picture of our intention in performing that act — whether for good or the opposite. For example, speaking rechilus about someone is not a single action. Speaking rechilus is an aveirah by itself, but it comes about through a series of actions that are themselves aveiros: listening to the lashon hara, accepting that lashon hara, failing to be dan lekaf zechus, and so forth. It all adds up. Likewise, when we do mitzvos, our actions add up. A person does not just “give tzedakah” when sending a check to an organization. That is a single action, but every mitzvah involves multiple actions. To give tzedakah may involve standing up from a chair, opening a drawer, pulling out a checkbook, filling

We can magnify our mitzvos by doing them in the best way possible, with great enthusiasm and simcha. focusing on all the mitzvos that will result from those actions. With Purim behind us, we are getting deeper into our Pesach preparations. How we feel about those preparations depends on how we think about them. The Berditchiver Rav once said that on Pesach we have no shofar with which to form the malachim from KShR”K (the roshei teivos of the order of the shofar blowing), as printed in the machzor. However, he said that he is sure that the same malachim can be formed through the KShR”K of Pesach, which he said stands for the Kratzin (scraping), Shibin (scrubbing), Rabin (rubbing), and Kasherin that the women do before Pesach. Instead of seeing our work in preparing for Pesach as simply cleaning crumbs, we can view them as creating malachim — for indeed we are. May we come to understand the deep intrinsic value in all of our actions, and may all of our actions be for the good.

Is one allowed to start a course of antibiotics on Shabbos? One may start antibiotics on Shabbos, because anyone who has a need to take antibiotics is considered “choleh kol haguf”, or in tza’ar gadol. In addition, present-day oral medications are not considered a serious issur, as in times of Chazal. Therefore, if one is in pain, for example, with a headache or toothache, one may take painkillers. *Ketzos Hashulchan Feel free to submit your short Hilchos Shabbos questions to comments@ themonseyview.com

LIMITED VISION It was 34 years ago when it happened. I was standing on the balcony waiting for Shoshi to come home from school. I finally glimpsed her as she started crossing the street. As she made her way across, a car came screeching up the hill — hitting her at full speed. She was thrown into the air, and landed with a sickening thud, crumpled like a pile of shmattes, 30 feet further down the street. I almost fainted. Then I began screaming hysterically, “Help, help! Call an ambulance! Help!” Of course, no one could hear me from the third floor, so I rushed downstairs. I was terrified to come close — who knew what I’d see... There were crowds of people standing around; I couldn’t get to Shoshi even if I wanted to. She was rushed into the ambulance. I have no recollection as to how I got in with her. As we pulled up at the hospital, the paramedics pushed the doors open, pulled out the gurney, and ran with Shoshi straight to the operating theater. I remember running after them shouting, “Is she alive? Will everything be okay with her?” but received not even a glance in my direction. The heavy doors closed quietly behind Shoshi and there I was left to myself, my tears, and the terrifying thought of, “Will she survive?” I’d come to the hospital with absolutely nothing, and probably stuck out like a sore thumb in my tichel, slippers, and housecoat. I began

62

/ T HE MO NS E Y V IE W

looking around for a frum Yid who could lend me some money to call my husband at work. My mind was in a turmoil; I didn’t even have the emotional strength to daven…I was in shock and totally drained. The sickening vision of Shoshi flying in the air and landing with a thud made me nauseous as it replayed itself over and over in my mind. Finally, after many hours of surgery the doors opened and the doctors gave us their grim prognosis, “She may pull through the next 24 hours.” That was the best they could offer. Shoshi lay there for many days, totally comatose and clinically dead — when suddenly the life support machines showed the minutest signs of life. My heart leapt in hope. It took many more days until she completely left her unconscious state, but then reality set it. The dozens of tests and scans she underwent to determine how substantial the brain damage was showed that she couldn’t talk, she couldn’t eat, she could not move her feet, and she could not see. I was devastated! How was my gorgeous, rosy-cheeked, little eight-year-old going to be able to take all of this? How on earth was I going to carry her around? My life was simply crashing down on me. Life after that was a long haul, moving along as if in slow

motion. Painstakingly, Shoshi was taught to swallow. At first it was just liquids, then soups and compotes, and finally she learned to swallow solids. She was also taught to speak. Can you imagine, an eight-year-old learning how to speak?! Every morning we wheeled her to speech therapy. The therapist

How was my gorgeous, rosycheeked, little eight-year-old going to be able to take all of this? was a wonderful woman with endless patience. She taught her to use her throat, “g, g, ch, ch, k, k,” then her tongue and teeth, “s, s, sh, sh, d, d, t, t” and then her lips, “b, b, p, p, f, f.” Each and every stepping-stone was a victory. I was impatient; I wanted to get out of the hospital already. But Shoshi could not walk and could not see. One day, there was a noticeable hustle and bustle in the children’s ward. A large group of top doctors, accompanied by the well-known Professor Koden, would be making the rounds in the coming week. The floors were scrubbed and polished, bedding was changed and the dust was cleaned from the deepest recesses of every corner. The ward was bright, shining, and clean when in walked the professor, strutting his

feathers, with a large entourage of doctors and students. He walked from bed to bed, glanced at the medical charts and offered his undisputable opinion, and then continued on to the next patient. As he approached Shoshi’s bed, I watched as he peered into her chart and then, totally ignoring me, turned to the group and said coldly, “This child has been through a very traumatic accident. She is suffering from a serious brain injury which has snuffed out many of her brain cells, resulting in her lack of speech, movement, and sight.” He pulled out a bunch of keys and continued. “Watch this,” he said as he shook the keys over Shoshi in an arch from one side of her head to the other. Her eyes did not follow the keys. They were focused on some unseen spot on the ceiling. “This child will never see again!” the doctor ended in his steel voice. He scribbled a couple of illegible lines onto the chart and turned towards the exit. After all I’ve been through, has he not even the slightest ray of hope to offer me? I burst into bitter tears and cried out to his receding back, “Have you nothing optimistic to say to a despairing mother? Have you no feelings?” But the doctor totally ignored my outburst and continued with his proud gait out of the children’s ward. I cried loudly; totally unabashed by the other parents in the ward who were staring

at me. And then, through my tears I recognized one of the students from the group who had doubled back — the only one who’d had a tiny kippah perched on the back of his head. “You must realize that although Professor Koden is a famous doctor, he’s still only human,” he said softly. “We have a G-d in Heaven Who watches over us and performs miracles each and every day. Pray to Him; you never know…” and he rushed back out of the ward to continue the medical tour with his fellow students. I cried the entire day until my husband came to change shifts with me — when I broke down yet again and told him what had happened that morning. He made a couple of phone calls to arrange for the older children to stay with my mother, and returned to the ward. “Tonight we are not going to sleep; we’ll stay up and finish the whole sefer Tehillim and pierce the Heavens with our tears and tefillos.” The next morning at 10 am, the proud professor was once again making his rounds. I could not bear to look at his emotionless face, but as he was about to walk straight past Shoshi’s bed, her eyes suddenly locked onto his. He was sure that it was his

imagination, but backtracked to check it out. The doctor stopped and walked slowly back towards her bed, her eyes still locked onto his. He pulled out his bunch of keys and moved them in a large arch above her head

Oh. Well, medical miracles do happen from time to time. — and her eyes followed from side to side — two, three, and four times… He then raised his eyebrows and said nonchalantly, “Oh. Well, medical miracles do happen from time to time.” He scribbled out some more details on Shoshi’s chart and turned to leave the ward. Was it my imagination, or was there a slight sag in the professor’s proud shoulders? Post-script: Shoshi is now married with five children — two of whom got married within the last eight months. She walks with a noticeable limp and speaks slowly, but she manages a wonderful home all on her own – she cooks, bakes, cleans and even volunteers at the local library.

Recap: For the first time since they opened the store, business has become almost nonexistent for the Binet Family. People are loath to shop on a slummy street, especially since the local malls now cater to the feeling of being upscale and exclusive. The Binets can’t even afford their usual Chol HaMoed trips. Chaim Elazar wants to use this as an excuse to learn the entire day, but Sara won’t let him get away from having fun.

It was like she’d lost a son, or maybe lost his number, lost her way to connect to him. And if she knew he was fine, that this is the way it was… she’d be fine with it, really. It would still hurt, but she’d console herself. And there was every voice inside her telling her that this was the way it went. He was 16 now, and it was only two years to Brisk. He was really growing into himself. But she knew, she knew, that he could have achieved Brisk, easily, without turning himself into some gadol, losing touch with the way the rest of the world operated. Something was wrong, wrong, wrong. And the unknown scared a mother’s heart like no definite malady could. The Chol HaMoed trip to the Bronx Zoo was fine. It was just family time, because the older children were slightly bored, and the young ones slightly out of hand, and together, it was just one blur of chaos. Rivky held Efraim at the sea lions, and he nearly threw himself over the fence. Moishe got lost and Elimelech had to beg one of the zookeepers racing around on the go-karts to drive him around the zoo to find his child. By the time they got home, after being stuck in Bronx traffic for nearly an hour, Elimelech was combing and tearing out his beard in a systematic fashion, and Sara was in tears. It was good that she’d prepared supper ahead of time, and Chaim Elazar, angel-like, enlisted his sisters’ help, and together they all set the table and served. Sara tried refreshing herself by lying down for a few minutes, but the headache only got worse. I’m not totally here. And look what happens when a mother is absent, if only in my head. Never had they had such a bad family trip, but then again, never had Sara been so consumed, a virtual broadcast of doomsday blaring on and on in her brain, not letting her see what was right in front of her. The voice of Chaim Elazar, snapping, or harboring secrets, or hiding the terrible idea that he was never enough and he had to prove himself. The image of her old neighbors and her new neighbors, and construction workers and that annoying Mr. Kasten, whose grand, SUV entrance into her life had turned it

into a nightmare. The financial figures, always the numbers, neatly calculating in her head like reams of data that never added up. And I couldn’t even see the lions, or the fascination on my children’s faces, or even that Moishe had wanted a chance to perform in the giraffe grove, unnoticed, and had thus been left behind. Eventually, the night petered out, and the children settled down, and Sara rested her guilt with a good magazine. The next day, she sent her kids to a local storyteller and raffle event, while she cooked with her two oldest daughters. Chaim Elazar was thrilled. Pesach passed. The boxes were back in

The children were back in school, and Sara was heading out to work when a large, dusty dump truck made her whole street vibrate, rolling in an oversized load. Then the excavator arrived. Only 15 minutes later, with Sara all dressed up in last year’s spring colors, the tractor advanced on Denise Callen’s house, and swung a wrecking ball into the sheetrock. A hole the size of a cosmic fist was chewed out. Sara found herself blinking away tears and she made for the comfort of her car. She drove away, past the construction

vehicles, as soon as she could. There was a lot of catching up to do at work. She was so organized, always ahead before Pesach. What with her own housework and cooking, she still went into the office until the last day, because she knew she’d rather work hard before than regret later. But there was still that coming back, getting reacclimated, refreshing her memory on old files and their status, and catching up on a full ten days of work. That’s why, when the principal called on her cell phone, she didn’t immediately recognize the number. “I’m calling about Tehilla,” the voice introduced herself. Tehilla. “And who, may I ask, is calling?” “This is Aviva Pearl, her principal calling. We can no longer accommodate Tehilla in our school, Mrs. Binet. And we figured, it’s after Pesach. You should know about this now, because sooner or later, you’ll want to find the right place. We’re just not the right fit. She needs more one on one. She’s not matzliach with the girls. She deserves a better place.” Sara was dumbstruck by this piece of news. Throughout her children’s school years, they’d had countless meetings

70

with the schools about the girls’ status, but never — not in all the years of partnering to raise her girls together — did she get such an outof-the-blue, blunt call. “We should meet, about this. My husband and I will come in to meet you.” “That won’t be necessary,” the normally affable Mrs. Pearl informed her. “This is a decision that has been reached by every member of the board. She needs more resources than we have for her. Until now, we made due with you hiring a private tutor.” “Do you need more tutoring? More money? A shadow? So just say so.” “It’s expensive. And quite frankly, it might be a better choice for you to consider an environment that’s better suited for her. Tuition is going up throughout the school, and that affects all of your daughters.” “But I always got a klei kodesh break.” “We won’t offer those anymore. We can’t. Look, if you need to place all of your daughters elsewhere, we’ll help you.” Anger and fear welled up inside her. “I’m going to go. I’ll have my husband call you.” There was no way she was staying seated here at work. Sara got up and drove home. On her street, Denise’s lot was unrecognizable. The house had been

The Olano house stood shaking, vulnerably, its front exterior ripped and discarded in the large dumping container, the rooms, exposed. In the dining room, a framed painting still hung as the tractor raised its menacing arm to it. In the back bedroom, a chest with a lamp still stood, awaiting its fate. It was torn down, the chest and all its drawers falling, piling, and collected for scrap. Sara came home, took out frozen chicken and placed it in water. Then she sat down at her kitchen table, now vibrating with the destructive intent of the workers nearby, and wept. To be continued...

Pesach Munchies I find the hardest thing about Pesach is that there is almost nothing I can give to my children (or myself, for that matter) between meals. These three recipes are perfect for filling that gap! They’re both easy to make and perfect to nosh on. The frequent cries of “Mommy, there’s nothing to eat!” will become a thing of the past. I hope your family enjoys them as much as mine does. A lichtigen Pesach.

APPLE RINGS

4 apples ¼ cup sugar 1. Peel, core and slice apples very thinly to form rings. 2. Place in a single layer on a parchment paper lined cookie sheet. The apple rings should not overlap. 3. Sprinkle the rings with sugar. 4. Bake on 250° for five hours. Check on them periodically to make sure they are not getting burnt. If they are browning too quickly, lower the temperature to 200°.

3 eggs 1 ¾ cup potato starch 2 tablespoons sugar ½ teaspoon salt ½ cup oil or schmaltz

OPTIONAL TOPPINGS: Kosher salt Sugar Fried onions

1. Preheat oven to 350° 2. Mix all ingredients in a bowl with a fork. The batter will be sticky. Spread it onto a parchment paper-lined cookie sheet and sprinkle on the topping of your choice. 3. Bake for 10 minutes, then remove from oven and cut into squares. You should have about 20 squares on each cookie sheet. Return to the oven and continue baking for about 30 minutes. The crackers should have a light brown color.

This is the perfect snack to nosh on between meals. It can also be served alongside chopped liver or babagenush as an appetizer to a meal. I have included three different versions of toppings.

EGG KICHEL

T H E M O N SE Y V I E W /

77

2 cups sugar 6 egg whites

2 bags ground nuts (you can use a mixture of any nuts) 6 tablespoons cocoa, optional

1. Mix all ingredients well and refrigerate for an hour. Drop by the teaspoonful onto a lined cookie sheet. Bake on 350° for about 15-20 minutes, depending on if you like them crispy or crunchy. Don’t overbake though, because they can easily burn. Wait until the cookie is completely cool before removing from parchment paper.

These are the best Pesach cookies I have ever tasted. They have to be completely cool before you remove them from the parchment paper, or they will stick and won’t be easily removed. The batter is easiest to work with when it’s cold. So stick it into the fridge between batches.

Primary Elections By Ruchel Lebovits

TUESDAY, MARCH 22ND The democrats held elections in three states: Arizona, Idaho, and Utah. In Arizona, Hillary won 57% to Bernie’s 39%, a far closer race than polls indicated. Bernie Sanders won both Idaho and Utah by huge margins. As we mentioned last week, the polls a month ago showed Clinton and Sanders in a virtual tie in both states, so Sanders winning by such large margins (Idaho: 78% to 21%, and Utah: 79% to 20%) is an incredible accomplishment for him. The republicans held elections in Arizona and Utah. Donald Trump won Arizona at 47% to Cruz’s 25% (Kasich got 10%) and received the state’s 58 delegates. Ted Cruz won Utah by a whopping 69% to Kasich’s 16% and Trump’s 14%. Being that he won over 50% of the vote, he received all of the states 40 delegates. In a surprise announcement, a month after dropping out of the race, Jeb Bush lent his endorsement to Ted Cruz. “Ted is a consistent, principled conservative who has demonstrated the ability to appeal to voters and win primary contests,” Bush said in a statement. “Washington is broken, and the only way republicans can hope to win back the White House and put our nation on a better path is to support a nominee who can articulate how conservative policies will help people rise up and reach their full potential. For the sake of our party and country, we must move to overcome the divisiveness and vulgarity Donald Trump has brought into the political arena, or we will certainly lose our chance to defeat the democratic nominee and reverse President Obama’s failed policies,” Bush added. “To win, republicans need to

make this election about proposing solutions to the many challenges we face, and I believe that we should vote for Ted as he will do just that. This endorsement means a lot to Cruz as he is struggling to gain support among the republican establishment which is frantically trying to stop a Trump nomination, but has not yet accepted Cruz as the most suitable alternative. Bush was considered the establishment candidate, so this endorsement might be proof that the party is moving towards backing the Cruz campaign.

SATURDAY, MARCH 26TH The democrats held three contests in Alaska, Hawaii, and Washington State, and Bernie Sanders went home with all three wins. That gives him wins in five out of the last six states; a very impressive showing. In total, he is only 268 delegates behind Hillary Clinton. This is an incredible accomplishment for a candidate that had been all but written off from the start and again highlights the political climate in the country which is anti-establish-

ment on both sides of the aisle.

APRIL 2016 The next contest for the republicans and democrats is in Wisconsin on April 5th. For the republicans, it is a winner-take-all-per-congressional-district state, and Ted Cruz has been leading Trump by the slimmest of margins in the polls in that state. There are 42 delegates at stake. The democrats are also virtually tied, with Clinton leading with only 6% in the latest poll — with a margin of error of 4.6%. Following the elections in Wisconsin, there is a bit of a lull for both parties. The democrats are holding elections in Wyoming on April 9th with only 14 delegates at stake. The big contest after that will be held by both parties on April

19th in New York, a state with a large amount of delegates, in which both Clinton and Trump have commanding leads over their opponents in the polls. Delegates are divided proportionally, and if the poll numbers continue to stay as they are now, both candidates will be able to further their delegate lead considerably. The remaining contests for April are on April 26th with both the democrats and republicans holding elections in Connecticut, Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island. Pennsylvania is the one getting all the attention on the republican side, as that is a winner-take-all state with 71 delegates up for grabs. If Donald Trump maintains his current lead in the polls in that state, it would be a big leap forward for him in his quest to receiving the remaining 499 delegates he needs to win the nomination.

By Chaya Liba Aarons

8 Does it always pour when it rains? If a child has one issue — will he necessarily have more? Nachman is catching on nicely to the Aleph-Beis, but is clueless when it comes to their sounds. While his classmates shout “mem” when R’ Yeshaya holds up a menorah, Nachman is silent. When I point out the initial sound of different words, Nachman looks at me blankly. For Nachman, right now a “beis” is just a “beis” and has nothing to do with a bentcher or a bracha. A new problem is creeping up on us. Aryeh and I have learned to slow down the enunciation of our words as we try to teach Nachman the relation between sounds and letters. But half a year of drilling the phonetics of the Aleph-Beis gets us nowhere. “Learning disability” rings in my head loud and clear. The signs keep getting more pronounced. Nachman is asking questions that are much too elementary for his age, and offering illogical answers to questions I ask him. Shabbos is always tomorrow, whether it is Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday, and no matter how many times I sing the order. Nachman’s sense of cause and effect is also all garbled. It’s raining because he took an umbrella and the paper is torn because it

Can I just sign on the dotted line, hand over some cash, and get an educated boy? belongs in the garbage. I feel like walls are closing in on me. First ADHD, now this? I’m skeptical that the comprehension issue is a direct outgrowth of his attention disorder. Nachman’s been on Ritalin long enough, and should have gotten the hang of thinking sensible, thorough thoughts. Why is his comprehension level so low? And the clincher: does Nachman have another problem? I shudder. It doesn’t help that I read an article now with a professional opinion that a child who has ADHD plus, is considered untreated if his other issues are not addressed. My panic mounts. We must get to the bottom of his issues. I talk to people who’ve “been there, done that.” I spill out our deep, dark story to a friend who is learned in the world of disability and therapy. As we talk, I marvel at the stark difference between us. She is peppy as she enthuses about different tricks she uses to teach her children skills. If she could, she’d homeschool her kids, I think to myself privately. No. I need another option. She mentions private tutoring. Now I get excited. Can I just sign on the dotted line, hand over some cash, and get an educated boy? I navigate a maze of telephone numbers until I hit the jackpot: a talented young woman trained in special ed-

ucation living on my block is eager for work. I check with Aryeh before I call the tutor, but he sees no reason for it. “Don’t you find it funny that I have to hire someone to teach my son something so basic? I’ll sit with him and we’ll be done with it in a few “sessions.” How much will you pay me?” I’m fine as long as I don’t have to do it. I’ll take a hundred tutors faster than I’ll teach my son the sounds of the aleph-beis. Teaching the simple stuff overwhelms me more than

I’ve long stopped berating myself for this and learned to appreciate my other talents. So, Aryeh took the job, but Tatty tutoring is by definition, er, home-style, and it gets postponed by things like leaks and urgent phone calls. But a few weeks later, my worried litanies about Nachman’s “learning disability” have mysteriously stopped. It takes me some time to notice it. agnosed) “learning disability” has disappeared! Nachman’s comprehension improved, just like that. We didn’t pay one tutor and Tatty didn’t even invest one session. Nachman caught on to the phonetics and is displaying age-appropriate comprehension, without anyone’s help. I remember Mrs. Abrams, my parenting instructor, sharing with us a similar account at the parenting sessions I attend. Her child’s math skills were extremely low — when her class was doing the multiplication table, she was still struggling with addition. Mrs. Abrams began to inquire about math tutorial programs, but before she could even call, her daughter suddenly got it. “These things are reminders that it’s not any program, medicine, or tutor that does the trick. Hashem can do it without our help. Yes, look for the help because that’s what Hashem wants us to do, but don’t pin your hopes on it.” Hashem has put a problem in our way and then just retrieved it. It’s a comforting reminder of His control and presence in our lives. Let go. Calm down. ADHD is just as infinitesimal a problem for Him. Hashem doesn’t need Ritalin’s help. This realization inspires me to daven when I feed Nachman his Ritalin. Only Hashem has power. I will trust only Him.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR EXTRA SPECIAL PARENTS Mention the word travel to a parent, and you’ll be regaled with horror stories to fill a book. From the nausea, to the lost and forgotten items, and even lost children, you can easily be scared off. When traveling with family meant packing for two adults, I was game. With three people? That already took some convincing. Now, I rarely travel with the gang without a good reason. Because, let me tell you, successful family traveling takes planning. However, there are some families whose planning requires extra-special attention. I truly admire the gumption of families who travel with their special needs child. Many families with special needs kids are scared of trips away from home. The thought of trying medical procedures or dealing with odd behaviors can be too overwhelming. However, there are many benefits: • Bonding and sharing quality with family • Learning life skills • Developing emotional regulation • Stimulating speech and language development with change of scenery Parents often report unexpected progress in self-help skills such as eating and dressing while traveling. I have noticed children’s vocabulary suddenly grow after a trip. What are some ways to

98 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W

keep the development from stagnating, while enjoying a (relaxing?) family trip?

PLANNING Map out your trip, and select destinations and rest stops that can accommodate your child’s needs. If you are planning a trip by car, you may have to check accessibility of your final destination, as well as places you’ll be stopping or staying en route. You’ll also want to consider what items you’ll need for bedtime, bath time, and mealtimes. By calling ahead, you can bring along anything that your destinations don’t have. If your special needs child has favorite toys, security items or essential medical items, you don’t want to discover them missing far from home. As you pack, make a checklist of all essential items and double check it before you leave each stop on your journey. Talk to your child’s therapists and teachers about goals you can easily integrate on the go. Is there a specific concept to focus on? A game you can play? Perhaps you can get an audiobook or CD that follows up on a learning goal. Are there steps at the site where you are visiting? Ask your physical therapist to show you how to help your child safe-

ly navigate a new environment. Therapy never happens in a vacuum. The more involved and consistent you keep things, the easier it is for your child to succeed. Ask therapists for ideas of travel toys. Occupational therapists recommend fidget toys, such as a handheld vibrating massager and little Hot Wheels. Children roll the toy cars back and forth on their hands because it’s soothing. Color Wonder markers and pads are great for worry free art. Bottom line: Meet children where they are. Depending on a child’s developmental level, you will want to pack favorites: toys, books, music, and relatively easy to clean up food and drinks. Write a short story or make a visual schedule of the trip to help your child understand the details

If your child is an escape artist, consider getting covers for the buckles in the backseat, and remember to switch on the child lock so the rear doors cannot be opened from the inside. sider purchasing a child tracking device before you travel. it is helpful to have a recent photo in case your child gets lost. Try to snap a photo each morning when you are in an unfamiliar setting.

ON THE ROAD Make sure that your child’s car seat is installed correctly. If your child is an escape artist, consider getting covers for the buckles in the backseat, and remember to switch on the child lock so the rear doors cannot be opened from the inside. A new and entertaining CD can help keep children glued to their seats for a while. Driver distraction can create very dangerous situations. I typically sit in the backseat with my young ones, so that my husband can focus on driving safely. Sitting between my two children prevents backseat battles. It also helps me notice and try to catch nausea early enough. If you are driving a van, you can experiment with changing seats after each stop. During travels, you’re bound to run into individuals who don’t

As diplomatically as you can, let people know what you need and how you expect them to make accommodations for your child’s special needs. of what the trip will involve. Uncertainty often creates behavioral problems. I have also used photo albums to show my children relatives we will see at our destination. Any type of visual support will reduce anxiety and increase interest. If your child is a wanderer, con-

know how to react to an individual with special needs. As diplomatically as you can, let people know what you need and how you expect them to make accommodations for your child’s special needs. Most people will be more than happy to help. If they offer you a room or seating accommodation that just won’t work, politely decline and explain again what you need and why. Look at this as an opportunity to do your part for disability awareness! Offer quality time and attention to your other children as well. While your special needs child is napping or occupied with a favorite toy, talk with the siblings and reconnect. They will thank you by having a much more cooperative and supportive attitude when your attention has to be focused on your special needs child. When my daughter asks me where we are going next, after a successful family trip, I know that despite the hardships, travel creates memories that last a lifetime.

There are a few million people in the U.S. who suffer from traumatic brain injuries (TBI) each year. Although concussions fall under the category of mild brain injuries, there are also moderate and severe brain injuries. In severe cases, the individual is unconscious for a minimum of 20 minutes — and often for many hours. A TBI may be due to a car accident, a chemical, lack of oxygen, stroke, infection, or even a bad fall. Each of these causes can have an article dedicated solely to it — and there would still be more to write. In all of these cases, though, the lingering injury is invisible. In addition, patients may often suffer from a combination of these injuries. Brain injuries do not heal like other injuries. Even once the physical wounds have healed, personality and mental abilities may be changed. Patients may suffer from mood swings, dizziness — and the inability to read, concentrate or retain

being bothered by movement, balance and coordination problems, poor comprehension and difficulty concentrating, fatigue when reading or loss of place, clumsiness, poor posture, pulling or tugging sensation around eyes, double vision, and difficulties with eye movements and depth perception. I am sure you are wondering: “Why are a disproportionate number of the symptoms of TBI visual?” The eye is part

However, patients who suffer from visual symptoms will often suffer long-term consequences despite all of these therapies. that information, and obtain meaning from it. Many components of the visual system are therefore affected by a TBI. In nearly all cases there are “eye teaming” difficulties, meaning that the two eyes no longer efficiently work as a team, pointing in the same direction at everything they look at. Often eye focusing difficulties occur; things may appear out of focus or it may be hard to shift focus to different distances. Eye tracking difficulties are quite common, and can affect one’s ability to follow a moving object, as well as move one’s eyes from one stationary object to another, such as in reading. Visual perception/processing will be affected as well. This includes many potential difficulties, including (but not limited to) visual memory and eye/hand coordination. Most common and significant are visual spatial dysfunctions. What occurs is called “Visual Midline Shift Syndrome” (VMSS) which is a mismatch of visual and spatial information, processed by the brain. This leads to the symptoms of poor or altered posture, poor or decreased balance, altered gait or sense of drifting when walking, “tilted floor” phenomenon, vertigo, and spatial disorientation in complex visual environments. Immediately following an injury, it is critical to minimize swelling in, and increase oxygen to the brain. A lot of rest is needed. Some doctors even prescribe sleep-

ing medications to ensure that patients get adequate sleep. Even if there is only a mild concussion, studies have shown that to greatly improve recovery time, there must be at least two to three days of complete rest for the brain and body. Three to four weeks after a concussion exercise becomes very useful in nearly all cases to help the patient recover more quickly. In addition to the typical

This may include those that increase oxygen to the brain, and certainly those that help repair neurological damage. Visual symptoms are best treated with appropriate lenses, prisms, and colored filters. After initial treatment, if symptoms persist, then a combination of Neuro-Visual Postural Therapy, Orthoptics and Processing and Cognitive Enhancement therapy should be added as well. Now you’re thinking: What are prisms and why are they helpful? A prism is a lens that bends light. In a chandelier

These doctors can both decrease swelling by helping inflammation drain, as well as help structures that may have altered positions realign themselves. In many cases, nutrients play an important role, since the body uses up more nutrients when it’s under stress. Often, patients may become depleted of minerals as the body’s reserves are used in an attempt to heal from injury. For persistent symptoms, a more complete regimen of dietary and nutrient changes, based on specific labs, may be quite beneficial.

there is often a rainbow seen, because of the prismatic effect of the crystals. Prism can be used a few different ways in order to change where objects appear. In nearly all cases, prisms may be prescribed for inefficiencies in how the eyes are working. A prism bends light, so that a prism in glasses can fool one’s eyes into thinking they are working together without strain. If one suffers from double vision, then a prism can help align the two images into one. Most eye care professionals who prescribe prisms will do so in one or both lenses, in order to compensate for ocular muscle imbalances. This is to help eye teaming problems.

However, the purpose of Yoked Prisms (also called Ambient Prisms), is not to compensate for a mechanical defect. Rather, Ambient Lenses shift space, addressing the VMSS by altering one’s perception and dramatically altering the patient’s view of the world — thereby helping to reorganize the patient’s visual system. Ambient Lenses change the sensory input, so as to affect the overall processing. It affects the full body — improving balance, gait, and ultimately posture (as well as tracking and teaming inefficiencies). In 75% of patients, change is apparent immediately upon wearing these lenses. Because Yoked Prisms have a neurological effect, they help rewire the brain — forcing it to re-map spatial relations. It is therefore very useful for: headaches, reading slowly, double vision, posture, balance, dyslexia, and eye-contact difficulties. In fact, they were first used in prescription glasses in the early 1970s by optometrists, including Dr Melvin Kaplan, who coined the term “Ambient Lenses,” (They were already being used in vision therapy prior to that time.) Initially, these glasses were prescribed for those with mood disorders (as research has shown a very high correlation between visual dysfunction and mood disorders), autism and other developmental delays. Over time, the popularity of Yoked Prisms grew and doctors recognized their potential for all visual-neurological dysfunctions. Now

set, there are always treatment options; options that can do far more than simply help a patient manage or learn to live with disabilities; treatment options that can re-organize and rewire the individual’s nervous system. In the words of Dr Melvin Kaplan, simply modifying behaviors or symptoms which, “Occur due to ambient vision deficits, is similar to telling a limping person with a rock in his shoe ‘Walk without limping and I’ll give you ten dollars.’ You may succeed temporarily — but

Over time, the popularity of Yoked Prisms grew and doctors recognized their potential for all visual-neurological dysfunctions. they are recognized to help overt brain injuries as well — regardless if the cause is Lyme disease, a stroke, or a fall. In addition to a precise prescription and prisms, colored filters can be quite beneficial for post-concussion syndrome. Solan filters, which are a specific shade of blue, are more useful for those with dyslexia/processing problems and/or extreme midline shift/disorientation, while yellow filters are helpful for those with tunnel vision/poor peripheral vision, anxiety, overstimulation by surroundings, and/or glare/ photosensitivity and eyestrain. In Conclusion: Traumatic brain injuries can be the result of many different causes, and occur at any stage of life. Yet, regardless of the causes and age of on-

you’ll have far more success over the long term if you correct the problem that caused the altered behavior in the first place.” Dr. Michal Luchins, an optometric physician, runs the Family Vision & Learning Center in Suffern. Within developmental optometry she specializes in unique prism assessment and prescribing to reorganize the patient’s neurological system. She incorporates mishloach manos and integrative medicine in the treatment of all of her patients. Dr. Luchins can be reached at (845) 369-3235 or VisionAndLearning@gmail.com or by visiting Optometrists.org/ DrLuchins.

Thrilling Second Shabbaton for Children with Special Needs Hosted by Hamaspik

Exclusive Parental Break, Children’s Getaway Broadens Agency’s Community Supports “Who’s excited?” cheerfully calls a counselor from behind a video camera. The lens sweeps the seats of the school bus filled with bouncing children, settling on one. “Me!” he gleefully rejoins, joined by cheerful smiles and joyful squeals all around him. That sums up the Hamaspik of Rockland County Shabbaton to which he was recorded trav-

to those very same kids. And in response to that successful Shabbos respite program, Hamaspik of Rockland County recently did it again. For the kids, the best part of the Shabbaton was the Motzoei Shabbos dancing to live music. Despite the work and minimum sleep in keeping a vigilant eye on their charges, staff still had robust reserves of strength

New Jersey. Those programs consisted of such exciting games and contests as bingo, and memory games, team sing-alongs and more—followed by the Shabbaton’s first Shabbos meal that had every young attendee feeling like royalty. By the time it was over and bedtime had arrived, the children were ever-ready for bed—

eling the early afternoon of Friday, March 18. But in the voice-mail messages left with Hamaspik by grateful parents after the family-recharging event was over, it turns out that out the children were hardly the only ones smiling.

ROYAL RECEPTION With the arrival of the Shabbos Queen, the children enjoyed the first of several programs with their counselors in one of the designated ballrooms of the Radisson Hotel in Piscataway,

GETTING UP AND GOING Breakfast was served from 8:00 to 10:30 a.m.—available bright and early for those early birds who tumbled out of bed first, accompanied by their counselors. A lengthy free play period came next in a designated ballroom-turned-playroom, followed by Shacharis and Krias HaTorah. And by 12:00 noon, it was time for the second of the three Shabbos meals. By late afternoon, it was that time of day again for Shalosh

Seudos. At 6:00 p.m., the children were seated once again in the dining room. Shabbos officially closed with the Havdalah ceremony shortly after 8:21 p.m. But while Shabbos may have been over, the fun was only getting underway.

PURIM TIME! Set up behind a partition for modesty purposes, a live band consisting of singer, keyboardist and guitarist was on hand to pump merry music into the air. With the ballroom to them-

selves, the staff danced with joyous abandon, goading their charges to literally jump for joy along with the high-energy sound. With the lights turned out and special stage lighting effects filling the room along with the music, the scene was one of organized chaos, as the children and counselors waved glowin-the-dark neon wands, sang into toy microphones, sounded tambourines, clapped along and otherwise let the music carry them away for a good two hours of musical ecstasy—a perfect

warm-up for the coming Purim holiday. “She had the time of her life. You totally outdid yourselves! And the warmth and the love that the kids felt that Shabbos—it was unbelievable! ” reported one deeply grateful parent in a voice mail left with Hamaspik founder and Rockland County Executive Director Meyer Wertheimer. “The dancing motzoei Shabbos,” she continued, “how the staff danced with the guests in wheelchairs, with the kids, to give them such a great time! Unreal!”

They fly by with flashing lights and screaming sirens, causing you to stop, stare, and utter an urgent chapter of Tehillim for the passenger inside. Although you see them nearly every day, ambulances remain an enigma to many people. Personally, I was always curious what riding in an ambulance was like — and then came a period of time in which I saw the inside of one just a little too frequently. Although my gratitude to Hatzolah knows no limits, I really hope to avoid needing their services again. If you’re curious like I was, just hop along as we explore the mobile world of ambulances!

HISTORY OF THE AMBULANCE: •

• •

In a bygone era, ambulances were simple two-wheeled carts that were used to carry wounded soldiers from the battlefield. Remember the rickshaw in FYI: Transportation? I’m assuming these were similar. Unfortunately, the soldiers frequently died before reaching medical help, due to the often lengthy trip on the human-pulled cart. The head surgeon in Napoleon’s army realized that there must be a more efficient way to transport the wounded before rigor mortis set in, and designed the first horse-drawn ambulance. Since then, ambulance design has been ever improving. The first motorized ambulance in America began its service during 1899 in Chicago. In rural areas that weren’t serviced by hospitals with ambulances, the local undertaker often used his hearse to transport patients to the hospital. The long standing joke is that the only competition for the undertaker is Hatzolah. In this case, I guess the undertaker got all the business! • Until 1966, ambulances were simply used to transport patients — not provide emergency medical services. Patients were loaded into the back, the doors closed, and the trip started. At the hospital, they’d open the doors and hope to find a living patient. Realizing that this wasn’t the best idea, the American government pushed a new bill into law, requiring medical staff ride with the patient. It was then that ambulances routinely began carrying medical gear.

112 / THE MONS E Y V IE W

TYPES OF AMBULANCES: •

Have you ever wondered why some ambulances appear boxy, and others look like large vans? There are four styles of automobiles used as standard emergency ambulances in this country, with each having various modifications in design. There are three types of ambulance service. The first type is the EMERGENCY AMBULANCE, which is the what Hatzolah is. These are the vehicles with lights and sirens, rushing to save lives when every second counts. Next, we have the PATIENT TRANSPORT AMBULANCE, which transports patients between medical facilities for treatment. Many times, these ambulances transport incredibly fragile patients and are thus equipped to provide a smooth trip and administer life-support. Lastly, there is the RESPONSE UNIT that simply delivers medical staff to provide support to the patient, but is not equipped to transport the patient to a medical facility. Automobiles are not the only types of transportation that are used as ambulances. In fact, almost any vehicle can be modified to perform some sort of medical service in a pinch. • Helicopter ambulances are frequently used when patients are difficult to reach, such as in disaster areas, or when time is of the essence. If you’ve ever been to Westchester Hospital, I’m sure you’ve noticed the signs for their helipad, where their own helicopter stands ready to fly, should the need arise. • Fixed Wing aircraft are used to transport patients over long distances, or to access patients in remote locations, like the Alaskan wilderness or the Australian outback. Airplanes are also used for patients that are too ill to travel by wheeled vehicle. • Boats can be outfitted with emergency medical supplies for remote island locations and cities with many waterways, like Venice. • Motorcycles and bikes can be modified to have a sidecar or trailer for patient transport. These are most commonly found in developing countries. • ATV’s and golf carts are sometimes used by emergency responders at events, when maneuvering through crowds proves difficult. • Buses modified to accommodate multiple patients come in handy when responding to severe accidents or disasters that can be reached by a large vehicle.

EMERGENCY MEDICAL PERSONNEL The people who respond to a call for medical help are highly trained Emergency Medical Technicians, or EMT’s for short. There are different types of EMT’s that differ based upon the amount of training they’ve received and the services they are allowed to provide.

INSIDE THE AMBULANCE While each type of ambulance will look slightly different, most carry a vast array of supplies. Most have interior cabinets in the patient compartment with shatter-resistant doors. Inside these cabinets are many different first aid supplies and specialized equipment to help stabilize a patient. There are supplies to staunch bleeding, support broken bones, manage burns, and help people breathe. There are medications to halt an allergic reaction or even jumpstart a heart, as well as a myriad of other emergency care items. Of course, there is also room for a stretcher, where the patient will usually lie during transport, and seats along each side with buckles for safety. The most friendly part of an ambulance’s supplies however, is the Shabbos food package handed to me by Hatzolah when I accompanied a loved one to the ER one Shabbos. It really made a tremendous difference!

EMT-basics are trained to provide basic life support. They can perform CPR, administer oxygen and artificial ventilations, take vital signs, immobilize the patient, and bandage wounds. The training of an EMT-basic roughly consists of around 100 hours of classroom education, plus 10 hours of field training. EMT-intermediates require an additional 250 hours of training and can operate an automatic defibrillator and an IV system. Paramedics receive the highest level of training an EMT can go through, and are able to provide similar care to that given in an emergency room. Paramedics are able to intubate a patient if needed, monitor EKG readings, administer critical care medications, and perform a vast array of other emergency medical techniques. This type of EMT has undergone 1,100 hours of classroom training, plus an additional 500 hours of field training. Critical Care Paramedics transport very sick and medically frail patients from one medical facility to another. They are allowed to administer more medications and perform more techniques than other paramedics.

who’ve lost a child to the leading cause of preventable death in children: unrestrained or improperly restrained children during a car accident. That statement presents in many painful variations, such as, “If I’d only known that the car seat wasn’t installed correctly,” or “If I’d only known that even a short trip around the corner could result in such a terrible accident.” Or, “If I’d only known that my yetzor hara was convincing me to be lax in properly buckling my child.” Parents everywhere have learned the heart-wrenching way that it never pays to overlook properly belting children into vehicles before the car begins to move. They’ve learned it through broken bones, brain damage, and even death. They’ve learned it through the horrific scenes of shattered glass, twisted metal, ejected bodies, and life support. They’ve seen once healthy, thriving children become unresponsive, paralyzed shells of the little people they once were. And they’ve seen small cofParents everywhere fins buried deep within the crust of the earth; have learned the the ground watered by heart-wrenching tears of remorse. Many could have way that it never taken steps to prevent pays to overlook these tragedies from occurring, but somehow, properly belting a portion of these parents fell prey to the attichildren into tude of laxity, assuming vehicles before the that “accidents happen to other people,” never car begins to move. imagining it’d happen to them. Alternatively, there have been extraordinarily careful parents that believed they were doing everything within human power to protect their children — but were simply lacking vital information that every parent should know. Obviously, everything is ultimately in Hashem’s hands — but it would be be foolish to say that one needn’t do hishtadlus by properly restraining a child in a moving vehicle. Wisdom is recognizing that ultimately whatever is bashert will happen; nevertheless it is incumbent upon the parents of our generation to empower themselves against the number one killer of small children: the improper use — or even complete lack — of car seats. Below are but a few true stories in the saga of misused restraining devices. Each of the stories occurred close to home, at speeds at or under 35 miles per hour. In fact, 75% of accidents occur within a ten-mile radius of one’s home.

SHULI’S* STORY: It was only a short trip back from the local park, and one-year-old Shuli’s father was in a rush to get home to a hot meal. He quickly buckled Shuli into her car seat and headed home, running a red light in the process and crashing into another car. In a split second, life would forever change for Shuli’s family. Only the plastic chest-clip on the car seat’s five-point harness system had been closed. At the moment of impact, Shuli’s little body broke through the plastic, and

was ejected from the car seat, thrown about like a rag doll. Shuli suffered severe brain injuries, in addition to broken bones and ruptured organs. After back-to-back surgeries and several days on life support, Shuli’s parents were informed that her battered body was too weak to absorb nutrients. They were forced to watch as their beloved daughter slowly starved to death, hooked up to the machines that were her last connection to this earth.

In order for car seats to function properly, the full five-point system must be buckled. It takes only seconds to buckle… And only seconds for a life to be snuffed out, chas v’shalom.

YOELI’S* STORY: Yoeli was an adorable eighteen-month-old boy, big and beefy, weighing in at well over 34 pounds, and standing 39” tall. Due to his height and weight, Yoeli’s doctor told his mother that it was okay to transition him from a backward-facing car seat to a forward-facing car seat. She now regrets that she followed that advice. Driving at only 35 miles an hour, Yoeli’s mother swerved to avoid an oncoming car, and instead hit a tree — almost losing her child in the process. Although the car seat was properly installed, and Yoeli properly buckled, paramedics were barely able to save his young life. What went wrong? A child Yoeli’s age is notoriously top-heavy, with the head comprising 25% of total body weight. During an accident, the head of such a small child is thrust violently forward, often times causing what is known as “internal decapitation.” This is sadly, what happened to Yoeli.

In essence, his skull was separated from his spine — his head held only in place by skin. Yoeli is now six years old and has suffered greatly the last several years due to the painful recovery process he’s undergoing. Despite the unabating pain, Yoeli is one of the lucky ones. He “only” required weeks of hospitalization, several surgeries, and much physical therapy. Additionally, he had to wear a Halo contraption for months, in order to allow his spine to reconnect with his skull. Other kids in similar accidents, have never had the opportunity to go home... Due to the tremendous momentum expended in even minor car accidents, European countries expect children under the age of four to ride in rear-facing car seats. We’d be wise to follow suit. Rear-facing car seats cradle the head, thereby helping prevent separation of the spinal cord and saving many lives.

The chances of a child surviving an accident increase tremendously by simply turning the child towards the rear. For children under two years old, the chance of survival and avoiding serious injury is over 75%.

MOISHE’S* STORY:

Note the neck extension that damages the spinal cord. Backward facing car seats minimize this danger.

If you can pinch a fold of harness at the collarbone, the harness is not tight enough. Do a pinch test every time!

The coat is compressed on impact and the child ejected from car seat.

In the rare instance that a child survives internal decapitation, a “halo” must be worn for several months until the neck heals.

120

/ THE MONS E Y V IE W

The truck came out of nowhere, hitting the side of the car with force. Moishe’s mother crawled out of the car, ignoring her own injuries as the ambulances approached, seeking only to reach her two children in the back. Her oldest daughter climbed right out of the car, but as she reached for sixyear-old Moishe, his head lolled to the side. Pulling Moishe from his booster seat, his mother could barely see through the blur of tears. Moishe was pale and unresponsive. Later, in the ER, the doctor ordered Moishe’s mother sedated as he broke the news that Moishe had passed on, due to internal hemorrhage caused by blunt force. The cause? Moishe’s booster seat was designed to secure him using an adult seat belt, and his mother hadn’t been aware that it was dangerous for the belt to lie across his stomach. That belt had killed him on impact by rupturing his internal organs.

Children should never use an adult seat belt until the lap-belt lies flat on the upper thighs when buckled, and the cross-body belt lies on the chest, never the neck. Only five-point harness buckles should be worn until then. Innocent and pure, the precious neshamos entrusted into our care are relying on us to provide them with a safe and loving home environment, free from danger. One of the ways that we can do that, b’siyata d’Shmaya, is by being aware of the basics of car seat safety, and making sure that each and every time we load our little ones into the car they are properly secured. May we never know the pain of a lost child.

What You Need to Know About Securing Your Child in the Car • From birth, until a minimum of age two, your child should be secured with a five-point harness system in a correctly installed rear-facing car seat. • When your child no longer fits in a rear-facing car seat, he/she should move to the back seat in a front facing car seat with a five-point harness system, until a minimum of five years old. • When your child reaches the maximum height and weight limit for the front-facing car seat, you can transfer the child to a booster seat with a five-point harness. • When the seat belt fits across the child’s upper thighs and chest (NOT stomach and neck) the child can begin wearing an adult seatbelt. • The buckles of a car seat should fit very snugly against the child, with no room for the child to remove their hands from the straps. If you can pinch extra material at the shoulder level, it’s not tight enough. • The plastic buckle on the car seat should be positioned just under the chin. Do not let it slide down to the middle of the chest. • Rear-facing car seats should have a belt that starts under the shoulder level of the child. • Front-facing car seats should have a belt that starts above the shoulder level. • Children under the age of twelve should never, ever ride in the front. A deployed air-bag can easily kill a child.

• Twists in the belting device reduce the ability to function. One twist reduces ability by 6%. Two twists reduces it by 11%. Three twists by 20%, and six twists by 40%. • A properly installed car seat should move no more than 1 inch from side to side when shaken. • Car seats have expiration dates. Toss out an expired car seat, or any car seat that has a broken body or has been in an accident. It is no longer safe to use! • You get what you pay for. Cheaper quality car seats may seem like a bargain, but may not hold up as well in case of a crash, chas v’shalom. • Car seats should not be used in place of an infant seat for newborn napping. A slumbering infant can slump over, with the belt compromising the child’s airway, chas v’shalom. • Children usually take after their parents. In order to ensure that they will always buckle-up, you need to do so as well. (Your own life is awfully important, and you should wear your seatbelt even when not traveling with children!)

Parents must also buckle up!

Last but not least, is a very important tip that few are aware of: • Thick winter gear — like parkas, snowsuits, and car seat buntings — are very dangerous when car seat belts are buckled on top. Due to the thickness of the outerwear, parents adjust the buckles to accommodate the extra material. In case of an accident, chas v’shalom, the force causes the winter gear to compress, revealing gaps in the belting system, and allowing the child to be ejected from the car seat. • To keep your child warm while buckled, use a thin jacket that can be seat belted while the jacket is held open, then closed on top of the secured buckles. (You should not be able see the buckles when jacket is closed, being that they are under the jacket, not on top of.) You can then add a blanket for extra warmth.

The force of even a minor impact can send unbuckled children flying.

Wishing you and your little loved ones many happy trails!

DINING ROOM

PREP LIST: Hi everybody! Although half of my kids are still noshing on Oo• Gloves dles and the other half are counting their money that I paid them for • Shmattes their Oodles, Purim seems like forever ago. The costumes are packed • Broom, shovel, mop, duster, away, baruch Hashem, though can’t quite say that for the extra vacuum pounds that mysteriously sneaked up over purim. That’s not packed • Window/mirror cleaner away yet. But nobody offered to buy off all my leftover nosh, and so, • Silver polish ummm, I kind of y’know, had to eat it. • Regular cleaner So... Who’s in the mood to buckle down for some serious cleaning? • Chandelier spray Truth is — I know some of you will roll your eyes — I truly am thank• Furniture polish ful for Pesach. Let’s face it. If not for this yom tov, some of us would • Floor cleaner polish the silver when it is so yellow, that you would think it’s gold • Stepstool and have it melted down to make jewelry for yourselves. Come to • Ladder think of it, not such a bad idea. But in all seriousness, there are some things we don’t clean through the year because we know we’ll do it before Pesach. So close your eyes for a minute and picture Pesach once in every five years. Think of all the loose change and missing socks you’d find then. Personally, I prefer to find the loose change every year.

1 CEILINGS, WALLS, AND WINDOWS You know the drill! Start with the ceilings. Dust or vacuum the corners, working your way down. Make sure the lights are off and bulbs are cool before you start your fixtures.

CHANDELIER: You can stand on your table, like I do. My kids find it hilarious so I try to do this when no one’s around. 4 am works best. Or use your ladder to reach those great heights you aspire to reach. You generally do not need a special cleaner for your fixture. Hot soapy water will do the trick. If you do use a spray, try Extend A Finish Chandelier Cleaner. There are three methods to clean your chan-

delier. The dry method, wet method, and thorough method. Use a material glove, or shmatte, and spray the cleaner onto the rag. Try not to spray directly onto the chandelier, as the spray corrodes the metal. Use another dry shmatte right away and wipe. Spray and wipe. Avoid rotating the chandelier. SPOTLIGHTS: use a damp cloth and wipe the inside rims.

WINDOWS

DRAPES: can be dry cleaned, steamed if you have a steamer, or vacuumed. As I mentioned in my previous article, drapes collect tons of dust. Keeping the pleats spread apart, use a handheld vacuum cleaner. Clean in an up-and-down motion. CURTAINS: Remove and wash per instructions. Dust blinds with a damp cloth. Wash windows and sills. Pictures and frames from the walls should ideally be removed. The area behind the frames tend to discolor a bit if not exposed, so when you clean your walls, it’s best if you clean it all the way. Dampen a shmatte and wipe the frames.

2 CHINA CLOSET Okay! Whatever is sitting outside on top of your china closet does not belong there. Yeah, really. I don’t suppose the boxes of Pesach matzoh sitting there from the previous year tastes any better with dust as an added flavor. Empty the closet. (Or do one shelf at a time; whatever works for you.) Spray and wipe shelves. If you have mirror backing, amidst making funny faces, polish that as well. SILVER: The best silver polish is Tarni Shield. Don’t use a lot at a time. Wipe with a shmatte or glove. Use q-tips and toothpicks to clean the crevices. Run hot water on areas that have wax. You can let the silver polish dry on the silver and wash off with hot water. But dry right away as water and salt generate black spots. CRYSTAL: The best way to clean crystal is the secret that’s not a secret anymore. Mixture of vinegar and water. Personally, I’m not the biggest fan of the vinegar smell. I fill a basin with warm water and Professional Wine Glass Cleaner, and let the crystal sit for a few minutes. Dry with a lint-free cloth. CHINA: Avoid using hot water for your china. Use only gentle soap cleanser. Softly wipe dry. Polish the outside with furniture polish.

Not much organizing goes on in the dining room. But D’cluttering does. Generally, the dining room should stay clear throughout the week. However, if you use your table as a dumping spot, or homework spot, or a general free-for-all spot, you might want to reconsider. I know some people that leave a white tablecloth with the plastic on the whole week as to not clutter the place up. I personally like to keep it empty, save for a vase or bowl in the center. Besides that, nothing really belongs in your dining room. TABLE: Remove the clutter. No! Don’t put anything back. If you have extensions, clean those as well. You can clean the table with furniture polish. or any cleanser actually. CHAIRS: Fabric chairs can be vacuumed, steamed, or spot cleaned. Leather chairs can be wiped down with a damp cloth or try Lexol Leather cleaner. Spray on shmatte and not directly onto leather. Any other furniture, dust and wipe accordingly.

Home sweet home. We move in with our parents. Part of the yom tov at home, part as a guest. We sleep at home, but eat meals out. 3. What do you do on Chol HaMoed?

Lounge about the house and enjoy the family time. Get out and go! We start off the day leisurely, but then get busy with activities. The men spend the day learning, and the women take the kids out.

Seller Concessions such as a discount points, origination, and processing; it may also include settlement costs such as title search fees, attorney costs, and flood certifications. The blanket term “closing costs” can also include fees assessed by state and local governments including transfer tax, mortgage tax, and other local taxes. Closing costs vary from loan to loan, because many fees are based on the exact amount of money borrowed. The more you borrow, in general, the higher your costs.

by Ann Zeilingold

INTERESTED PARTY CONTRIBUTIONS: GETTING THE HOME SELLER TO PAY YOUR MORTGAGE CLOSING COSTS The U.S. housing market is expanding. Fueled by low rates and the rising cost of rent, home sales are at a new high. And now, with an abundance of low and no-down payment mortgages, and the return of piggyback lending, there are fewer obstacles to homeownership for first-time and repeat buyers. When you buy a home though, you pay for more than just the house — there are closing costs to consider. The good news is that, as a homebuyer, your contract can stipulate that the seller of the home pay for any and all closing costs —and that means that your closing cost obligation drops to zero. The arrangement is known as “Seller Concessions,” and it is not so uncommon in today’s home purchase contracts. Don’t want to pay closing costs? Ask the seller to pay them on your behalf.

WHAT ARE MORTGAGE CLOSING COSTS?

When you purchase a home using a mortgage, your lender is required to disclose all fees which you’ll incur as part of the transaction. These fees are known as “closing costs.” By definition, closing costs are costs paid by a homebuyer which would not be applicable in an all-cash transaction. However, the term is used in more general terms to include all of the costs associated with buying a home. This can include lender fees

USING SELLER CONCESSIONS TO REDUCE LOAN CLOSING COSTS

Don’t want to pay closing costs? Ask the seller to pay them on your behalf.

Seller concessions is a formal arrangement by which a home seller agrees to pay some, or all, of a buyer’s closing costs. Sometimes, seller concessions are referred to Interested Party Contributions (IPC), and sometimes they’re referred to as Seller Contributions or a Seller Assist. Each terms means the same thing: it’s a reference to when the buyer’s closing costs are paid by a party other than the buyer.

Here’s how seller concessions work. First, a homebuyer and home seller reach an agreement on a sales price for a home. It could be any price, so long as there’s agreement. Then, the buyer and seller both agree to raise the sales price of home above its original level, with the seller agreeing to concede the entire “raised amount” toward the buyer’s closing costs at the closing. Sometimes, seller concessions will cover all of a buyer’s cost. Other times, it will not. In no circumstance, however, may the amount of seller concessions exceed the amount of closing costs charged to the buyer. The buyer cannot use seller concessions to get “cash back” at closing, or for any other purpose than to pay for closing costs shown on a settlement statement. In addition, seller concession may not be used to compensate for home appliances or roofing in need of repairs or to make the buyer’s down payment. Seller concessions may only be used to offset buyer closing costs.

concessions may not exceed the sum of a buyer’s closing costs. Another is that the home’s “adjusted” sales price must be supported by the home loan appraisal. Additionally, you can’t request unlimited seller concessions. Depending on the buyer’s loan type, seller concessions are capped to a specific percentage of the loan size. A conventional loan, for example, will allow up to 9% seller concessions for loans with a loanto-value (LTV) of 75% or less, 6% seller concessions for loans with LTVs between 75 and 90%; and 3% seller concessions for loans with an LTV over 90%. Investment properties are capped to 2% of the purchase price. FHA loans allow up to six percent in interested party contributions; VA loans allow up to 4% in interested party contributions; and USDA loans allow up to six percent. Seller contributions are allowed on jumbo loans, too. Limitations vary by bank. Using a seller’s concession strategically can make a deal!

THE LIMITATIONS OF THE “SELLER ASSIST”

That said, limitations exist for seller concessions. One, as discussed, is that seller
