Music Lessons for Boys

One day, my husband was leaving work a little late when his boss came running over to him. He told him that he had found a nest in the parking garage and asked my husband if he wanted to do shiluach hakan. All the other frum men in his carpool were already in the car, but because my husband was the last one to leave, he was still standing outside, and the mitzvah was his. He climbed a ladder in the grimy garage in his suit and hat and was zoche to do the mitzvah. I knew that the reason he had been the one who got the mitzvah was because of my tefillos Baruch Hashem, I was also zoche to do the mitzvah myself a few weeks later, as was one of my sons.

Hashem is the Kel shomea tefillah. We should all be zoche to mitzvos!

I laughed when I read the letter from “A Bubby and Balebusta,” because I could have written the same exact letter.

Here’s my foolproof method for baking a Bundt cake without it getting stuck in the pan: When you preheat the oven, put the empty, dry Bundt pan inside. When the batter is ready, carefully remove the pan (use oven mitts), spray it generously with cooking or baking spray, and then pour in the batter. It works for me every time.

As a proud balebusta, I always have a Bundt cake on the counter. I wanted to share a couple of tips: First, most Bundt cake recipes fit in the mixer bowl when doubled, so never make just one. Second, since my Bundt pans are large, if the recipe calls for only four eggs, I always add two more for a total of six eggs. This gives the cake more volume, and it never affects its taste or texture.

A while ago, you printed an article about neurofeedback, and a reader wrote asking for more information. This is my story.

As the excitement of my eldest daughter’s engagement filled our home, so did my anxiety. The pressure to get everything done, along with my worrying about her future and that of my other children, became unbearable. It reached the point where I couldn’t face daily tasks; even shopping for the wedding felt like a mountain too steep to climb. My anxiety spiraled out of control. I was nauseous all the time, couldn’t eat, and nights were restless and long.

In this whirlwind of despair, I stumbled upon a solution that sounded too good to be true — neurofeedback. This non-invasive technique uses music to provide real-time feedback on brain waves, all without the need for medication.

As a mother of young children, I am concerned about how laid back and relaxed parents are about letting their children play outside in the summertime. I see it on my block and many other blocks and neighborhoods. Here are some tips and reminders for a safe and healthy summer.

1. HELMETS I am probably the only one on my block who enforces helmet-wearing. Parents: One fall off a scooter, bike, electric scooter or other riding toy can have disastrous repercussions. Please make sure your children wear helmets.

2. BALLS When the ball goes into the street, please make sure that your children (especially ages five and younger) ask an older child or adult to get the ball for them. They should not be running into the street; the cars are not expecting them to do so.

3. WATCH YOUR CHILDREN AT ALL TIMES Yes it is hard to be everywhere simultaneously. However, if supper has to wait because children want to play, let supper wait, and watch your kids outside. In today’s world, there are all types of things that can, chas v’shalom, happen if children are outside by themselves. If you think an “older child” is watching them, make sure they are actually supervising the young ones and not only playing with their own friends. Your Neighbor

Celery for Sale

The Torah prefaces the mitzvah of shemittah by saying, “And Hashem spoke to Moshe on Har Sinai, saying…” (Vayikra 25:1).

Rashi asks: What relevance does the mitzvah of shemittah have with Har Sinai? Weren’t all mitzvos given at Har Sinai?

He explains that just as with shemittah all details were given at Har Sinai, so too all mitzvos were given at Har Sinai with all their fine details.

Why is specifically the mitzvah of shemittah used to teach us this lesson?

IT WAS THE SHEMITTAH YEAR of 1980. The rav of Elad, Rav Shlomo Zalman Grossman, shlit”a, who was then rav of the small community of Bikat Hayarden, was delivering a shiur on the topic of shemittah to his constituents. He spoke of bitachon in Hakadosh Baruch Hu and of the promise of “Vechi someru mah nochal bashanah hasheviis… v’tzivisi es birchasi…” (Vayikra 25:20–21).

“And if one will ask, ‘What will we eat in the seventh year?’ Hashem says He will command His bracha in the sixth year, and the fields will yield produce for three years — the sixth, seventh and eighth years of the shemittah cycle,” the rav explained.

One of the listeners, Chanan, stood up and said, “Rabbi, if you promise that it will happen to me, I will keep shemittah!”

Rabbi Grossman was unsure whether it was proper for him to make such a personal promise, and asked for time to think about it. He decided to ask Rav Elyashiv if he could make such a promise.

“It could be that the promise is for all of Klal Yisroel as a whole, and not for individuals. You can assure him that he will see much siyatta d’Shmaya. Hashem will certainly help him,” Rav Elyashiv replied.

Chanan was satisfied with this response.

Over the year, as Chanan’s tractors

stood idle, he became the laughingstock of the yishuv. No one could relate to his sacrifice.

When the year was up, Chanan turned to his regular vendor, hoping to purchase seeds with which he could replant his fields.

“I apologize,” the vendor replied, “but the seeding season is just about over. I’ve got nothing left.”

Chanan got the same response from all other brokers he tried. There was simply no merchandise to be found.

When Chanan shared his problem with a friend in the industry, the man told him that he actually had a great deal of celery seeds left over. “But they are expired. I don’t think they’re worth anything. I was actually just about to dispose of them. If you want, I can give them to you for free.”

Chanan had nothing to lose. There was nothing else for him to plant. He accepted the sacks of celery seeds and sowed his fields.

It was a strange idea — planting such a large quantity of celery. And stranger yet, the fields sprouted and sprouted.

The celery grew enormously — three times their regular size. Chanan had entire fields of celery as tall as his waist. There was enough celery to feed the entire country on celery alone for two months! Everyone wanted to know what Chanan would do with so much celery.

“I don’t know,” Chanan replied. “I did mine, and Hakadosh Baruch Hu will do His.”

One day, Rabbi Grossman received a phone call from Chanan, asking that he come down to his fields urgently. He was desperate to share his story with the rav

“The friend who had given me the celery seeds called me and asked, ‘Do you remember the celery seeds I gave you? Did you do anything with them?’

Over the year, as Chanan’s tractors stood idle, he became the laughingstock of the yishuv

“’Remember?’ I said. ‘I’m eating, breathing and sleeping celery! Do you need some? I can give you as much as you want!’

“’Good,’ my friend said. ‘Celery normally sells for half a dollar, but now it would go for three dollars. You could even ask for four or five dollars apiece...’

“I asked my friend what happened, and he explained that Europe had been hit with a cold spell. ‘Everything is frozen. The people aren’t going out of their homes, and soup is the best comfort food. Celery is in high demand! The store owners and retailers are begging for celery.’ My friend urged me to hire extra workers to harvest and prepare the celery for sale. He’d help me ship it across the continent — to England, Holland, Belgium, and France.”

Rabbi Grossman later repeated that he could not erase the picture in his mind of dozens of Arab villagers bending over beside the Yiddishe workers. Day and night, they worked on this massive project, cutting and packaging celery heads and leaves.

By now it was close to Purim, and by the time Pesach rolled

around and Rabbi Grossman wanted several heads of celery for himself, there was not a single piece left.

Needless to say, Chanan earned a pretty penny on the business. Sometime later, he purchased a new car and jokingly called it “my shemittah Mercedes.”

Slowly, Chanan took upon himself more mitzvos until he became a Torah-true Yid, in every respect.

Going against the tide, Chanan attained a high level of ruchnius through his emunah peshutah. * * * * *

It is said in the name of the Chasam Sofer that shemittah, specifically, demonstrates proof that the Torah comes from Above, given at Har Sinai. Who could promise “v’tzivisi” — that the fields will yield a triple crop?

Only Hashem could make such a promise and carry it out, which makes it the greatest proof that the Torah was given at Sinai.

What Came First? A Happy Chicken

Visiting the chickens who lay Meant to Be’s eggs is like taking a vacation. Picture pulling up to a farm with acres and acres of the greenest grass, the freshest air, and an unobstructed view of the blue sky and sun.

Hundreds of white hens run around on the grass, cackling and grabbling in the dirt with their beaks, finding the insects they love to eat. The chickens come running up to you and peck at your shoes, squawking happily all the while. Off to the side you see a henhouse for the chickens, but who would want to be indoors when the sun, air and fresh grass beckon?

The chickens go into their house when they’d like to drink water and lay their eggs. Their house is on wheels, a mobile house that can be moved. Whenever the grass in the fields gets used up, it’s time for a trip! When the hen house is moved, the chickens follow along with it, and are led to a field with fresh, delicious grass for them to pluck, and bugs in the earth for them to enjoy.

These are the happy chickens that lay Meant to Be’s eggs.

The Chicken Maze

Keep your chicken happy, and she’ll give you wonderful eggs. Mr. Pal, the founder of Meant to Be, knew this truth well. When he went looking for a farm that would raise chickens for his unique eggs, it was with a long list of requirements.

The chickens had to be out on the pasture all day long, all year round. There had to be enough grass on the farm for the amount of chickens that were there (at least 50 acres of grass for approximately 2,000 chickens).

The chickens had to be moved to new pastures whenever the grass and bugs in the field were used up. This is called mobile pasture.

The supplemented chicken feed had to be organic, soy-free, cornfree, and non-GMO.

To prevent blood spots, the chickens had to be white chickens, not brown chickens, as brown chickens are known for eggs with many blood spots.

Mr. Pal met many farmers on his search for the perfect egg. Some farmers had pasture-fed chickens, but too little grass. Some farmers had big farms, lots of grass, and mobile pastured chickens, but fed the chickens supplemented feed made of soy.

There were non-organic farmers who checked the other requirements, except that they were raising brown chickens, where the blood spots rendered the eggs not kosher.

Why were the farmers raising brown chickens instead of white ones? Brown chickens are far easier to raise. White chickens are more wild than brown chickens. Neglecting to maintain the health of the person who’s holding all this together would be a terrible mistake; the problem is how and when.

Far beyond weight loss or muscle building, a long-term health plan takes into account a person’s metabolism and genes, as well as their lifestyle. The busy lifestyle led by so many in our community is thankfully punctuated by kiddushim, engagements, weddings, bar mitzvahs, and yamim tovim, and at all these occasions, gourmet food spreads are ubiquitous. Yet mindless eating can cause constant weight struggles. Driving, rather than walking, has become the default option, enabling us to accomplish errands and get to work easily—but at what cost?

Citing Rising Costs, Monsey Trails to Increase Prices

Get ready to pay more as of June 1 when you step onto a Monsey Trails bus, with a May 15 letter informing customers of the upcoming change.

The company blamed increased labor, maintenance and insurance costs, as well as inflation, for the price hike. Further adding to Monsey Trails’ rising costs are the company’s investment in new buses and technology to provide a safer, more comfortable and more convenient commute.

Effective June 1, riders will pay $17 to travel from Monsey to Manhattan, with 10-trip books selling for $140 and 40-trip books priced at $420. Riders to Brooklyn will see their costs rising to $20, $160 and $480 for single rides, 10-trip books and 40-trip books respectively. Prices on the Lakewood Express will be $30, $240 and $510 for single rides, 10-trip books and 34-trip books, while those headed to Kiryas Joel will be paying $15, $130 and $500 for single rides, 10-trip books and 50-trip books.

“We understand that price adjustments can be an inconvenience, and we genuinely appreciate your understanding and ongoing support,” read the letter. “We remain committed to delivering the highest standards of service and customer satisfaction.”

Vigilance Urged as Credit Card Skimmers Found in Multiple Jewish-Owned Stores

Community stores may feel like safe havens to consumers, but they are also popular with fraudsters, who have swindled their victims out of thousands of illegally gotten dollars.

Skimmers, devices placed over card payment terminals to

capture electronically embedded data, have been found at two kosher stores in Rockland County. An unknown number of people have had their information compromised, and Chaverim of Rockland, the Ramapo Police Department and Ershte Hilf are currently investigating those incidents.

Skimmers pose a very real danger to the public, costing financial institutions and consumers over $1 billion each year, according to the FBI. Criminals use the information illegally obtained through skimmers atop store card readers, bank ATMS and fuel pumps to create phony debit or credit cards, allowing them to siphon funds out of their victim’s financial accounts.

Multiple skimmers have been discovered in recent weeks at kosher stores in Brooklyn as well. Last week, an alert Pomegranate cashier spotted someone planting a skimmer on their register’s payment terminal, immediately shutting down their register to protect customers. Additionally, two men used skimmers to cheat multiple Williamsburg residents out of their Supplemental Nutritional Benefits in early May, with similar incidents reported in March, according to Hamodia.

Store owners and shoppers are all being urged to exercise extreme vigilance every time they swipe a payment card, and to be on the lookout for skimmers, which may make the terminal seem larger than usual or wiggle when moved.

“They’re not invisible,” said Williamsburg Shomrim coordinator Yanky Itzkowitz. “If you give a once-over on the terminal, you’ll find them. If you find such devices, call police and Shomrim immediately.

Itzkowitz also cautioned the public to check their credit card balances frequently to monitor their activity and to change their PIN numbers often.

Suffern Man Arrested for Hive Tire Slashings

Customers who shopped at The Kosher Hive on the afternoon of May 16 got more than they bargained for after a Suffern resident traversed the parking lot, slashing the sidewalls of multiple vehicles.

After being alerted to the slashings at approximately 1 p.m., Chaverim contacted the Ramapo Police Department and headed to The Hive, with the first member to arrive in the parking lot noticing the suspect, still wandering between the rows of cars.

The suspect left the area quickly, but not before the Chaverim volunteer was able to record the license plate number on his Hyundai sedan. Police were able to use that information to track the man, and he was arrested a short time later. The motive for the vandalism remains unclear at the time of this writing.

Because the tires were cut on the side, and not in the treads, they were rendered completely unfixable. The

Chaverim members who responded to The Hive had their work cut out for them, changing tires on affected cars as their owners came out of the store.

Chaverim coordinator Yossi Margareten told The Monsey View that as many as nine cars had their tires slashed, but the number may increase as more people report the damage to their vehicles.

Serial Spring Valley Thief Convicted in Trial

A 46-year-old Ramapo man who preyed on Spring Valley residents has been found guilty on multiple charges and is facing jail time.

District Attorney Tom Walsh said that Brandon Salas was convicted on charges stemming from two separate incidents that took place months apart. The first took place in July 2023, with Salas taking items from two cars parked in driveways, including a bag with keys, paperwork, an electric scooter, expired credit cards and AirPods.

The second incident occurred in December 2023 when Salas stole a blank check from a car that was parked in the driveway of a local residence, made it out in his own name in the amount of $7,500, and forged the signature of the individual listed on the account. His attempt to cash the check at a local bank failed, with a teller finding the transaction suspicious and calling police when Salas refused to leave the bank as asked.

The situation escalated, with Salas threatening police and bank employees and cursing at them, while still refusing to leave the bank. After being placed under arrest for trespass and disorderly conduct, Salas scratched the hand of one officer, drawing blood, and spit in the face of another.

A jury in the County Court of Rockland found Salas guilty on two felony and three misdemeanor charges, as well as three violations. He was remanded to the Rockland County Jail after the verdict was heard and, with four prior felony convictions and nine previous misdemeanor convictions to his credit, Salas is potentially facing a minimum of fifteen years to life in prison when he is sentenced on August 13, although a lesser sentence is also possible.

Walsh vowed to continue partnering with law enforcement to ensure communal safety.

“The defendant in this case has shown on multiple occasions a clear disregard for the rule of the law,” said Walsh. “Today’s conviction shows the dedication and commitment of law enforcement and our assistant district attorneys to hold individuals accountable for their criminal activities.”

Knife-Wielding Bike Thief Arrested in Spring Valley

Spring Valley residents are breathing a little easier now that a suspect who stole a bicycle from private property and then later waved a knife at Chaverim members was arrested.

Chaverim was contacted by a West Street resident to report a stolen bike on the morning of May 13. A Chaverim volunteer noticed a man who matched the suspect’s description, albeit

dressed in different clothing, near Memorial Park. As more patrol volunteers arrived at the scene and began following the suspect, he joined a group of friends who encouraged him to pull out a knife and throw rocks at the Chaverim members.

The group left the scene without further incident, and the Spring Valley Police Department were unable to find the suspect. Two days later, the suspect was spotted on Route 45 by a Chaverim member who contacted police, resulting in a successful arrest.

Wieder Steps in To Mediate Spring Valley Sewer Issue

Responding to a call from assistance from his constituents, County Legislator Aron Wieder went to bat for a group of Spring Valley residents whose homes have been plagued by ongoing sewer backups.

Multiple homes on King Terrace, Stanley Place and Aselin Drive reached out to Wieder to discuss worsening sewer issues. Wieder arranged a meeting with several of the families involved and Michael Saber, Rockland County Sewer District No. 1’s executive director for sewer operations.

After hearing from the homeowners, Saber agreed to have systems installed in the affected homes, with the sewer district paying for the short-term solution and treating sewer pipes in the area to a complete cleaning. A more permanent answer to the problem is currently being investigated, and residents are being reminded not to place any non-flushable items into the sewer system.

Wieder expressed his gratitude to officials for jumping in to address the issue.

“This was a quality of life situation which needed to be dealt with immediately,” said Wieder. “More than that, it was creating an unhealthy environment, which I recognized immediately was putting an entire neighborhood in jeopardy.”

Spring Valley deputy mayor Yisroel Eisenbach credited both Wieder and the Rockland County Sewer District for their rapid response to the problem.

Iranian President Raisi Dead in Helicopter Crash

the “Butcher of Tehran,” died in a helicopter crash on May 19.

The helicopter also carried Iran’s foreign minister, Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. It crashed in a rugged mountainous area on the border to Azerbaijan in inclement weather conditions. Due to the terrain and weather, it took sixteen hours for rescuers to reach the site of the crash. There were no survivors.

Raisi earned his nickname in the 1980s when he sentenced thousands of Iranians to death following sham trials. He was viewed as a protégé of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and was expected by many to replace the 85-yearold leader after Khamenei’s death or resignation.

Raisi led Iran in the push to enrich uranium to weapons-grade levels, armed Russia in its war on Ukraine, and launched the recent attack on Israel. He also directed the arming of proxy terrorist groups in the Mideast.

Although Iran held nationwide prayers for Raisi during the search, media reports included accounts of celebrations by Iranians who viewed Raisi as their tormentor and a murderer. Israel and its allies acknowledge that Iran is the benefactor of Hamas. One Iranian source was quoted as saying, “There are many forms of justice.”

Recycling at Its Best: Tappan Zee Bridge Sections Being Reused Upstate

Five years after it was carefully imploded to make way for the completion of the twin bridges connecting Rockland and Westchester counties, segments of the original Tappan Zee Bridge are being put to good use in Steuben County, New York.

Two deck panels are being incorporated into plans to replace existing bridges on State Route 248 in the Town of Canisteo, located south of Rochester. One will be used on newly built abutments that will be replacing an 85-year-old bridge that spans Sugar Creek, while the other will become part of a multi-girder bridge that will take the place of a 50-year-old bridge that crosses Bennetts Creek.

The bridge work on State Route 248, a main road in downtown Canisteo, is part of a $10.1 million infrastructure project that will improve mobility and resiliency. Announcing the bridge repairs across the state’s Southern Tier and Finger Lakes regions on May 16, Governor Kathy Hochul touted the use of the Tappan Zee components as a cost-effective and time-saving measure.

Even as Rocklanders understood the need for the Tappan Zee’s replacement, many were outraged when then-governor Andrew Cuomo unilaterally renamed the new twin spans in memory of his father. Whether or not they will take comfort in the knowledge that parts of the original Tappan Zee Bridge will be used again remains to be seen.

“The Tappan Zee Bridge lives on with new purpose,” said Thruway Authority Executive Director Frank G. Hoare. “The Thruway Authority decided years ago to set aside these concrete deck panels so that they could be strategically used across New York State.”

Other parts of the original Tappan Zee Bridge have been recycled or reused. According to WAMC, some of the bridge’s deck panels were sold to upstate municipalities for the price of one dollar each, while the bridge’s steel was recycled. Other components of the bridge that couldn’t be recycled were used to create marine habitats in the waters off Long Island.

Gavi’s condition worsens, and Debbie feels more lonely than ever.

Gavi so badly wanted to be normal, but our life was anything but. Within a few months, he couldn’t even keep his job. He couldn’t enjoy anything. I couldn’t leave him with the baby, either, because he wasn’t well enough to take care of him.

One time, I tried to leave him for a short outing with some friends, but Gavi called me to come back home; he simply could not care for Tzvi in his state. My social life soon became non-existent. I began avoiding my friends even more, because their questions were getting more pointed. Everyone — friends, family, acquaintances — wanted to know why Gavi was home all the time.

“What’s wrong with him?” they asked. “Why isn’t Gavi working?”

Other people were less direct. “So, what’s Gavi doing these days?”

I’d always provide an airy response. “Oh, some

of this and some of that…” I also turned down invitation after invitation.

“Come on, live a little,” people would say.

I’m generally a super social person; people couldn’t figure out what was wrong with me. I heard the whispers; some were louder than others. They thought my husband was depressed, or maybe an addict. Why couldn’t he hold down a job? Maybe we had mari tal issues… or maybe he was getting into all sorts of troublesome behav iors. The theories ranged from bad to worse.

Tzvi grew and developed, and Gavi’s condition con tinued to deteriorate. There were multiple admissions to the hospital that year, usu ally short, to drain the ac cumulated fluids or to run tests. Every time Gavi got a fever, we had to rush to the ER to have him checked out. We tried natural cures rang ing from dubious to ridiculous, and we tried segulos failed attempt, we talked about moving to the U.S. to try and get a liver faster.

around trying to make Gavi comfortable, keeping him out of the hospital, staying on top of the paperwork and medications (I was on first-name basis with all the pharmacists at our local pharmacy), working (by this point, thankfully, I’d started working from home), running our home and caring for our child — all by myself. It was a difficult time. We’d completely stopped going away for Shabbos, and it was heartbreaking to see Gavi weakening before my eyes. His condition was worsening all the time, the scans showing more and more damage to his liver, but the numbers on his bloodwork weren’t terrible enough to warrant being placed on the transplant list here in Eretz Yisroel.

situation and weak immune system, the risk of him contracting coronavirus was terrifying. Just like everyone else, we hunkered down in our small apartment, but we had no porch and no yard. To a certain extent, we’d been socially distancing for ages already; we were so deprived of social interaction. Even once the country started opening up, we couldn’t take the risk of any interaction with people.

I couldn’t have imagined it possible, but Gavi was slowly growing even more swollen, even weaker, and was spending more and more time in bed. Shabbos seudos were frequently a one-woman show, but after getting ready for Shabbos on my own, along with caring for my two tiny sons the entire week, it often became too much to ask. We’d suffice with Kiddush, challah, and bedtime for all.

A few months before Tzvi’s second birthday, Gavi spiked a fever. It was late at night, and I was finished.

“We’ll go to the ER in the morning,” I told Gavi, massaging my aching temples. “I just don’t have the energy now.”

But before dawn, I was in the hospital myself — for good reasons, baruch Hashem. Gavi accompanied me, while I worried about him and felt guilty that he wasn’t being checked out in the ER, as per Professor Lowenstein’s strict instructions. Our second son was born healthy and beautiful, but I was so preoccupied with Gavi that I neglected to call some of my good friends about Moish’s birth. When I did call one of my closest friends to share the news several hours after the birth, she was decidedly distant.

“Mazal tov,” she said coolly. “I heard.” She hadn’t heard from me. And she was hurt to the core.

I shouldn’t have been surprised that he couldn’t get out of bed on Rosh Hashanah. For Yom Kippur, we split up; I left Gavi at his parents’ home and went to my parents with the boys so I wouldn’t have to do it all alone. Once again, people found that very strange and dropped some choice comments.

If there’s one thing that I learned from all this, it’s that we can never be sure we know what’s going on in someone else’s life. We often accept this truth regarding coworkers and friends, but think we have a pretty good handle on our sisters or sisters-in-law. But this is far from the truth.

I’d often have long conversations with my mother-in-law about Gavi’s medical situation, askanims’ opinions, doctors’ opinions and our options. Her daughters would sometimes get frustrated and ask her, “What do you two speak about for so long? You don’t even talk to us for such a long time!” They’d get upset when my mother-in-law was always available to babysit my boys (as we went off to the ER yet again) but couldn’t always be there for their children.

That’s why I avoided speaking to people who knew me well, which included my closest friends. There were times that I ignored my mother’s calls, because Gavi didn’t want me to share certain details about his situation, and I couldn’t trust myself to just enjoy a regular schmooze with her.

Was it hard? Awfully hard. But respecting my husband’s wishes was my priority, and I didn’t think it could be any other way.

CHAPTER 11

Yoel is doing his community service hours in the shul he established. He learns a lot about the shul members. Namely, Chavi receives tzedakah, Gavriel Lichtentag has fallen on hard times, and on top of all that, he sees Menachem consulting with the Rav.

So this was how rock bottom worked. Every time you thought you finally plunged to the jagged, rocky, bottom, a new shaft takes you even further down.

Yoel sat in his car, too weak to enter the house. He leaned against the headrest, trying to stave off the dizziness of his free-fall.

Chavi’s voice echoed in his ears. You wouldn’t understand

Even, for some reason, Daniel begging him to understand that he can’t make it to the siyum because his wife had a friend’s wedding to attend.

How had he gotten to this place?

After a lifetime of giving his family

everything, he had nothing to show for it.

He closed his eyes and felt his body melt into nothingness, like the floating dizziness he’d feel on a plane in the first few seconds after takeoff.

Though he’d been tempted to talk to the Rav only an hour ago, now he couldn’t bear the thought of seeing him ever again. Who knew what his kids had shared with him?

Did Chuni discuss his dilemma over naming their first child after his side because the family didn’t have a Baruch yet?

Yoel shuddered. He had turned off the car, and it was getting cold. He rubbed his palms together and put them in his pockets.

His fingers hit rumpled silver foil. The blintzes. Their warmth had long since evaporated. Disgusted, he threw it on the passenger seat. A dirty piece of paper clung to it.

Tony’s contact information. An image of the tattooed, angry teenager replaced that of his kids.

Now that was a boy who knew rock bottom.

He flicked on the car lights and read the number again. Then he entered it into his keypad and hesitated. Was he going to confide in a teenage dropout?

He pressed talk.

“Tuli?” he said as soon as Tuli answered. “Where am I catching you?”

“It’s Tony.” Tony was obviously on alert.

“Okay, Tony, then.”

“Who is this?” Tony asked.

“It’s me. Joel. Remember me? We met a couple of weeks ago in the park. You helped me with the leaves.” He said it all in a rush.

“Reb Yoel!” Tony chortled. “Of course I remember you! I can’t very well forget you.”

“No? You didn’t forget me?” His voice was embarrassingly hungry.

“You saved my life with that cash. Believe me, I was broke! Seriously broke. But you believed in me. You even offered me a job! Me, the homeless junkie. You know where I went that very night? To my first 12-Step NA meeting. And I’ve been clean for sixteen days and eight hours! That’s a first for me!”

“Mazel tov!” Yoel said, genuinely.

“As part of the meetings, we learn to recognize the good in our lives. So you have been my blessing!”

Yoel had a hard time conjuring an image of a grateful Tony/Tuli in his mind.

“So why are you calling me?” Tony asked.

“Nothing. I just wanted to touch base. You know, hear if you’re interested in that job offer.”

“You mean it?”

“I said it was on condition that you make a clean break. So that means there’s a job waiting for you.” He rolled up the dirty scrap in his hand and placed it in his wallet.

“What job? I’m not exactly qualified for much.”

“Meet me tomorrow morning at ten, and we’ll figure it out.”

“I’ll be there!” Tony said. “Bye, then.”

“One second, Tony.” He couldn’t figure out how to formulate the question he wanted to ask. “Have you ever hit rock bottom?”

“Are you kidding me? Every day for the past ten years.”

“Okay, then. See you tomorrow.”

Yoel hung up. There was a knock on the car window. Yoel peered out at his wife.

“Yoel, I was waiting for you,” she said as soon as he lowered the window. She was wearing her old model’s coat from shanah rishonah over her regular clothes, which meant she’d been cooking in the Pesach kitchen. She looked young, and happy to see him.

“How was it?” she asked.

“It was... eye-opening.”

Chavi lowered the flame under the apple compote. She’d made a double batch, planning to blend half into an apple sauce and leave the rest chunkier. That would give her two desserts in half the time.

She hardly recognized herself. Her life had become a perpetual race against the clock, and strategic shortcuts were her new way of running her household. Running the household. Because all she did was run. Run to work, run for a therapy session or two, throw some supper together, and run Pesach errands.

But first, the positive interaction of the day. Zevi’s therapist had told her to ensure that they have at least one positive moment every evening.

Positive, here we come.

“Zevi!” she called. “You can be our ices guy!” She’d let him re-blend the sorbets. Zevi bounded into the miniscule space. “I’m here!”

Chavi tensed, waiting for something to happen.

Positive. Positive.

“Good! Since you’re turning ten on Shabbos, I think you’re old enough to use the food processor!” She could use this birthday trick all through Pesach; his birthday fell on Shabbos Hagadol, and they could celebrate as long as necessary. “In another three years, you’ll be bar mitzvah!”

Zevi beamed. She cheered him on as he threw chunks of homemade frozen orange juice and mango into the food processor. A chunk of sickly sweetness hit her in the face. Positive

Finally, she undid the disposable apron and looked at the gargantuan mess. Bless Glenda.

She had exactly ten minutes to get to her parents’ house. She couldn’t afford to be late — in more ways than one.

She recruited Shloimy and quickly updated him on timers and temperatures and flames. Then she brushed off her skirt and flew out of the house in a snood. The thought of wearing a sheitel after a full day’s work was enough to give her a headache. It was one of the only benefits of being the lone female invited to the annual Brandwein Tasting Event.

Because for the Brandweins, even prePesach was steeped in tradition.

Chavi hurried up the block, her mouth salivating at the thought of her mother’s famous potato blintzes, but the image soured when she realized she’d be meet-

ing her father for the first time since that unpleasant phone call on Tuesday.

Yosef Yehuda’s and Chuni’s cars were parked already, and Daniel was only landing at midnight. So that meant everyone was there already. She rang the doorbell and let herself in.

“Hi,” she called to announce her presence.

She followed the noise to the Pesach kitchen. Her mother was basking in compliments, wearing her old, snapdown model’s coat. She was cute like that, holding on to that atrocious garment almost as if it were a minhag

Her two brothers were standing in the kitchen eating with their fingers. They took finger-food very literally.

“Boys!” Chavi chided. “What’s with you? A plate, a chair.”

“Uch!” Chuni groaned. “The big bossy sister is here. Can’t you let a hungry guy eat?”

Chavi helped herself to something that was probably meant to be a vegetable kugel and some kohlrabi coleslaw.

“Yum!” she said. “I haven’t eaten all day except for about five coffees.”

“Chavi! It’s not healthy,” her mother said. She looked at her, snood and all, and shook her head. She piled a plate with crinkle cookies and meringues and passed it to her.

“Cuz this is healthy,” Chavi said.

Chuni snatched the snow kiss off her plate.

“Chuni, pure sugar,” Yosef Yehuda said.

“Not true,” Chuni said as he took another one, “there’s an eggshell in it, too.”

Menachem joined them with a plate of faltche fish. “Yum! You should make this all year round,” he said.

“Right. I’ll talk to you Isru Chag about that idea,” Russy answered. They bantered and inspected the Pesach kitchen to make sure that the milchig sink still had too much water pressure and the fleishig sink too little.

Then they spoke about the upcoming Shabbos Hagadol. The Brandweins took the “gadol” part very seriously, with catered suedos and a festive kiddush in the simcha room downstairs. On Motzei Shabbos, the cleaning crew came and transformed the room for the Seder.

They discussed their kiddush preferences and Pesach plans while helping

themselves to seconds and thirds, and in Chuni’s case, even fourths.

“Ma? When did you make your first Seder?” Yosef Yehuda asked.

“The year before Menachem was born. Oh, was that a Pesach.” Russy shook her head, remembering. “Chuni had chicken pox, and he cried all day.”

Yosef Yehuda laughed dutifully. “Aha, so that was the year I turned bar mitzvah.”

Russy nodded slowly. “Yes, it was. You’re not thinking along those lines, are you?”

Yosef Yehuda quickly changed the topic. “How’s Zeidy doing?”

“Not too well.” Russy sighed. “His lungs are full of water, and they’re trying to stave off pneumonia. Let’s hope he can avoid the hospital.”

Yoel walked in. Instantly, her brothers straightened and walked toward the door to the dining room. Chavi didn’t dare meet her father’s eyes.

“We can just stay here,” Yoel said. Her brothers stared at their father. Chavi looked up and watched her father simply walk over to the laden table and take a seat.

Her brothers didn’t notice the look Russy and Yoel exchanged. But she did. They all took seats around the table.

Yoel took the envelopes and handed them to her brothers with his yearly instructions “to buy your wife something special.”

Before handing Chavi her envelope, he hesitated. “I hope this helps,” he said quietly.

Chavi nodded and swallowed. She took the envelope, noticing how thick it felt. There was definitely some cash in there, besides for the check.

“Thank you,” she said softly. Hoping her brothers weren’t following, she added, “I’m sorry if I hurt you. It was never my intention.”

Yoel nodded, and an uncomfortable silence followed. Her mother noticed and interjected loudly, “Oh! I almost forgot. Zevi’s birthday gift.” She hurried to the hall closet and returned with a beautiful paper bag.

Chavi took it from her. “May I peek?”

Russy nodded.

Chavi removed a spiffy leather vest.

“It’s a horse-riding set,” Russy explained.

There’s something magical about an upsherin on Lag Ba’omer. The weather is glorious, and there’s a spring in everyone’s step. These simple yet beautifully presented layer cakes will crown your celebratory breakfast or brunch.

CHOCOLATE HAZELNUT LAYERED CAKE

Deep, rich and smooth: chocolate decadence!

CHOCOLATE CAKE

Don’t be put off by the vinegar. You can’t taste it and it helps yield a softer, moister cake.

1¼ cup oat milk

4 T. white vinegar

3 heaping tsp. instant coffee

1½ cups hot water

3 cups Wondermills flour

3 cups sugar

1 cup cocoa

HAZELNUT FROSTING

1 (16 oz.) carton whip topping

1 (14 oz.) container Baker’s Choice hazelnut cream

⅓ Baker’s Choice dutch cocoa, sifted

DIRECTIONS

1. To prepare the cakes, grease three 9-inch round baking pans and set aside.

2. Preheat the oven to 350°.

3. Mix the oat milk with vinegar, and pour into a mixer.

4. Dissolve coffee in the hot water, and add to the bowl.

5. Sift the dry ingredients, and add to the bowl along with remaining ingredients. Mix to combine.

6. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared pans, and bake for 30 to 35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Cool completely. For best results, refrigerate the cakes or freeze until semi-frozen before stacking.

7. To prepare the frosting, whip up the whip topping until stiff peaks form.

8. Add the hazelnut cream and cocoa, and mix to combine.

9. Refrigerate for a few hours until set.

10. To assemble, cut the rounded tops off the cakes so you have a flat, even surface. With a spatula, gently spread a third of the cream onto the first layer of cake. Gently place the second layer on top. Repeat with cake and cream for the third layer. Decorate as desired.

LAYERED CARROT CAKE WITH CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

An impressive, delicious showstopper of a cake that is deceptively simple to put together.

CARROT CAKE

3 cups raw carrots (approximately 5 medium carrots)

1 cup roasted, salted pecans

4 eggs

2 cups sugar

1¼ cups oil

2 cups Wondermills flour

2 tsp. baking powder

1 tsp. baking soda

1 heaping tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp. salt

CREAM CHEESE FROSTING

12 oz. unwhipped cream cheese, softened

½ cup (1 stick) butter, softened

2 cups confectioners’ sugar

½ tsp. vanilla extract

DIRECTIONS

1. To prepare the cakes, grease three 9-inch round pans. Preheat the oven to 325°.

2. Grate the carrots in a food processor. Set aside.

3. Chop the nuts in the food processor fitted with the S-blade. Set aside.

4. Add the eggs, sugar and oil to the food processor, and mix until the mixture is a light color.

5. Add the next five ingredients, and pulse until the mixture is blended.

6. Stir in carrots and nuts by hand.

7. Divide the batter evenly among the three pans, and bake for approximately 40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean.

8. Cool the cakes in the pans for 10 to 15 minutes.

9. To prepare the frosting, mix the cream cheese and butter in a bowl until smooth.

10. Add the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla, and mix again.

11. To assemble, spread the frosting on all the layers of cooled cakes, stack them, and decorate as desired.

CHERRY SHORTCAKE

Light and fluffy dreaminess is what this cake is made of!

CAKE

1 cup Wondermills high-gluten flour

1¼ cup confectioners’ sugar

½ tsp. fine salt

10 large egg whites at room temperature

2 T. fresh lemon juice

1 T. warm water

1½ tsp. cream of tartar

1 tsp. lemon zest

½ cup sugar

WHIPPED CREAM FROSTING

8 oz. block full-fat cream cheese, cold

1 cup confectioners’ sugar

1 tsp. vanilla extract

2½ cups heavy cream, cold

ASSEMBLY

1 can cherry pie filling Fresh cherries, for topping

DIRECTIONS

1. To prepare the cakes, preheat the oven to 325°. Line three 8-inch round pans with parchment paper. Don’t grease the pans!

2. Sift flour, confectioners’ sugar and salt into a bowl. Set aside.

3. Add egg whites, lemon juice, warm water, cream of tartar and lemon zest into the bowl of a mixer. Mix on a low speed to combine.

4. Gradually add the sugar. Increase the speed to medium-high, and mix until soft peaks have formed.

5. Use a rubber spatula to gently fold the dry ingredients into the whipped egg whites, half at a time. Mix just until you can’t see any streaks of flour.

6. Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans, and smooth out the batter with the back of a spatula.

7. Bake for 22 to 25 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.

8. Let the cake layers cool fully in the pan, then run an offset spatula around the edges to carefully loosen them.

9. To prepare the frosting, chill your mixing bowl and whisk attachment in the freezer for 30 minutes.

10. Place the cold cream cheese into the chilled mixing bowl, and mix on a medium speed until smooth.

11. Slowly add the confectioners’ sugar, and mix to combine. Scrape the bowl with a rubber spatula as needed.

12. Add in vanilla extract, then turn the mixer to a medium-high speed, and gradually pour in the cold heavy cream, a quarter at a time. Once the heavy cream is fully incorporated, mix a few more seconds just until peaks form. Don’t overmix.

13. To assemble, place one cooled cake upside down and spread a thick layer of frosting on top. Top with a third of a can of cherry pie filling. Repeat with remaining layers. Top the cake with fresh cherries right before serving.

FOURTEEN YEARS AGO, the words Lag Ba’omer conjured up images of circles of fathers dancing in Meron with upsherin boys on their shoulders, or perhaps of the intense prayer inside of the me’arah

Some may have envisioned crowds in the alte beis hachaim in Cracow, davening at the kever of the Rema, whose yahrtzeit falls on Lag Ba’omer, as European Yidden have done for hundreds of years.

However, the image of people davening at a more recently discovered beis hachaim in New Jersey wouldn’t be among the images that naturally spring to mind.

WHAT HAPPENED IN THE INTERIM THAT HAS ADDED NEW JERSEY TO THE LAG BA’OMER SCENE?

A Life of Mesiras Nefesh

The Bobover Rebbe, Rav Naftuli Zvi Halberstam, zy”a, encapsulated simplicity and humility.

As a young boy, he was miraculously saved from the Nazis, ym”s, after numerous near-death experiences together with his father, the heilige Bobover Rebbe, Rav Shlomo, zy”a. He went on to live his life with the motto of mesiras nefesh, serving as his father’s right hand in rebuilding the Bobov dynasty from the ashes after the Holocaust.

No matter how busy he was carrying the enormous financial burden of the Bobov mosdos all over the world, he was never too busy to help another Yid — including complete strangers — while always trying to conceal his great deeds from the public eye. He devoted his 74 years in this world to helping others in every possible way.

An Opinion in Shamayim

After his father’s passing in Av 5760 (2000), he assumed the leadership of the Bobov chassidus. Within no time, stories began circulating about his great deeds and ruach hakodesh, which had been obscured by a cloak of simplicity for many years.

A couple of weeks after he became the Rebbe, he related a story about his grandfather, the Divrei Chaim of Sanz, zy”a, at melaveh malkah

The chassidim were surprised. For many years, the Rebbe had led melaveh malkah each Motzei Shabbos during the summer months for the Bobov bochurim, and he never mentioned any tzaddikim other than those whose yahrtzeit took place that week, and the Sanzer Rav’s yahrtzeit was in Nissan, approximately a half year away! Their confusion was somewhat clarified when he finished the story, quoting the words of the Sanzer Rav: “Today I’m a Rebbe, and I have an opinion in the Heavenly court…” The chassidim smiled at one another; it was as if he was alluding to something…

In his few short years as Rebbe, from 5760 to 5765 (2000 to 2005), hundreds of people saw yeshuos from his brachos and council. Other Rebbes attested to his greatness and even sent their own chassidim to him for blessings. His grandfather’s words, “I have an opinion in the Heavenly court,” apparently held true for the Rebbe as well. Not infrequently, mysterious statements turned out to be ruach hakodesh.

Among the throngs of people who entered the Rebbe’s kvittel shteeb during those years was Reb Meilech Miller, shlit”a, who served as the menahel of the Bobover cheder in Boro Park for many years.

“In the winter of 5762 (2002), I went in to the Bobover Rav with a kvittel,” Rabbi Millers recalls. “The Rav took the kvittel and read it aloud. After reading the names of some of my children, the Rebbe fell silent. Then he lifted his eyes to me and said, ‘Rabi Shimon bar Yochai will be with me on Lag Ba’omer.’”

Reb Meilech realized that he was hearing one of the Rebbe’s more mysterious statements.

“In Bobov, in general, and from Rav Naftulche, specifically,” Reb Meilech continued, “we never heard such ‘open statements.’ Also, it was just after Chanukah. How did Lag Ba’omer connect? I didn’t dare ask, and the Rav continued reading the kvittel, blessing me that I should merit kol tuv selah.”

Three years later, on 12 Adar beis 5765 (2005), the Rebbe was niftar. In the meantime, and as the next few years progressed, those “names” on the kvittel had grown up, and a few of them had gotten married — but three had not yet been blessed with children.

“I cannot describe the pain of parents watching their children waiting to be blessed with their own children,” Reb Meilich says. “In 5770 (2010), as I was seeking segulos, advice or anything else that might be a sign of hope, I suddenly recalled that strange encounter that had taken place eight years earlier with the kvittel. I remembered how the Rav had read the names of the first few of my children aloud, and that when he’d got-

ten to the three youngest of those who were close to the age of shidduchim — those now waiting for a yeshuah — he’d stopped reading and said, ‘Rabi Shimon bar Yochai will be with me on Lag Ba’omer.’

“I stopped short. I realized there was a clear message here; these words had been said for my three children. The Rav’s piercing eyes as he said those words had foreseen the struggles my children were to have and conveyed a link to our salvation.

“When Lag Ba’omer 5770 (2010) rolled around, I made my way to the Rebbe’s tziyun in New Jersey with my wife and one of our children who needed a yeshuah

“Although I had been there so many times over the years to daven to Hashem to help us in the zechus of my Rebbes, this time it had a different meaning. I wasn’t coming only to the Rebbe; I felt like I was coming to Rabi Shimon bar Yochai, as the Rav had alluded to eight years before.

“Tears ran down my face as I repeated the Rav’s words out loud, feeling the pain that only parents seeing their children in distress can understand. I begged and pleaded: ‘You told me that Rabi Shimon will be with you on Lag Ba’omer! Go up to the Kisei Hakavod and daven for my children! Knock on the doors of Rabi Shimon and bring a yeshuah!’ I left the ohel feeling reassured that for the first time in years, my worries had been somewhat relieved.

“The next year I traveled to the tziyun

again to thank Hashem for the wonderful chasadim he had done with our family. That very year, we had celebrated the birth of two grandchildren, and another baby was born to the third child who had been waiting later that year.”

But on his second Lag Ba’omer at the tziyun, he wasn’t alone. Others who had heard of the incredible story had also come to daven there on the great day. Here are some of the many stories of yeshuos people have experienced over the years after davening at the Bobov Rebbe’s tziyun on Lag Ba’omer.

Shidduchim

A wonderful family was in desperate need for shidduchim for their three children, a son and two daughters, who were in the parsha for years. Upon hearing about Lag Ba’omer in New Jersey, the mother of these children went with her two daughters to the tziyun to daven. All three children got engaged that year, with the third chasunah taking place on Lag Ba’omer the year after.

In another story, an older bochur who was close to 30 years old went to the tziyun for the first time on Lag Ba’omer. A short time later, he found his bashert, who was 27 years old and had also been at the tziyun on Lag Ba’omer that year for the very first time.

Children

“It had been over five years since my marriage, and I had not yet merited having children,” a yungerman from Kiryas Yoel relates. “I tried various segulos, to no avail. Then I heard that many people had merited yeshuos on Lag Ba’omer at the tziyun of the Bobover Rav. I went and poured out my heart. Nine months later, we were blessed with a baby boy!”

Parnassah

In 5777 (2017), a man from Antwerp was accused of severe tax evasion. The government claimed that he’d been illegally receiving money for decades, which was actually Holocaust reparation funds from Holland.

Ignoring the legal documents supporting his case, they continued to press charges, demanding that an enormous fine be paid.

The accused asked his son, who lives in New York, to go and daven for him on Lag Ba’omer at the tziyun of the Bobover Rebbe.

That year, Lag Ba’omer fell on a Sunday, and his son went and pleaded for a yeshuah in the merit of the Rebbe.

The next day, Monday, was a legal holiday in Belgium. On Tuesday, his father’s lawyer was astonished to receive a phone call informing him that all charges had been dropped.

For Everyone

Rav Aharon Karliner, zy”a, said, “Just like Hakadosh Baruch Hu is for everyone, so too is Rabi Shimon for everyone.”

Just like during the Bobover Rebbe’s lifetime, when Yidden of all types would flock to him, after his passing, as well, Yidden of all types see open yeshuos in the Rebbe’s zechus. May the tefillos of thousands ascend directly on High, and may all of Klal Yisroel merit tremendous yeshuos in the zechus of Rabi Shimon bar Yochai and in the zechus of all the tzaddikim, v’kol tuv selah

Thousands will iy”H be visiting the tziyun of the Bobover Rebbe zy”a, Harav Naftali Halberstam, on Lag Ba’omer at the Beis Hachaim in Deans, NJ, as has been customary for the past thirteen years, where heartfelt te los will take place for yeshuos v’rachamim. Kol Tov Seloh.

How the iconic Lag Ba’omer niggun came to be

The drums beat an opening roll in perfect harmony with poignant clarinet notes, and everyone bursts into spontaneous dance.

“L’chavod hatanna ha’Elokai… Rabi Shimon bar Yochai!”

Arms linked, hearts open, they sing, bobbing to the beat in an explosion of unrestrained happiness.

The notes segue into the cherished tune of “Bar Yochai nimshachta ashrecha…,” stirring the emotion and awakening an exalted yearning for Reb Shimon and all that he represents.

We salute you, Reb Shimon — venerated leader of all time, holy Tanna, and author of the saintly Zohar Hakadosh! “…Shemen sason meichaveirecha!”

With each stanza of this timeless, universally-sung niggun, we extol yet another layer of Reb Shimon’s greatness. Each piece builds on another of ten sefiros — malchus, yesod, hod, netzach, tiferes, gevurah, chesed, binah, chochmah, kesser — depicting an image of greatness: the venerated Tanna.

The tune waxes and wanes as Yidden from all walks of life express their innermost desire and emotion. It’s music of the soul. How indescribable is the simcha and dveikus as these hallowed words are sung. In this elevated atmosphere of joy, the gates of Shamayim swing open wide.

A Mystical Source

Veiled in the first letters of each stanza is the name of the composer of this emotion-laden song praising Reb Shimon: Shimon Lavi.

After fleeing the Spanish Inquisition as a child, Shimon Lavi arrived with his family to Fez, Morocco, in 1492. There he grew in Torah, learning both nigleh and nistar, until he ultimately became a mekubal. He authored Kesem Paz, a kabbalistic peirush on the Zohar Hakadosh. Deeply connected to Reb Shimon bar Yochai, he also wrote the famous song Bar Yochai, whose depth and

richness attest to his personal wisdom and grasp of kabbalah. His broad knowledge encompassed astronomy and medicine, as well.

Shimon Lavi always dreamed of living in the Eretz Hakodesh, and in 1559, he began making his way across the continent. Fate, however, had it otherwise.

On his journey, he sojourned in Tripoli, Libya, where he was dismayed by the state of the community’s Yiddishkeit. The members of the kehillah were largely unlearned and hardly kept the Torah. For instance, he noticed that on Shabbos, the men davened the weekday tefillos without compunction or even awareness of their error.

Reb Shimon Lavi realized he had to stay to rectify the situation. With mesiras nefesh, he helped rebuild the community into a bastion of Torah, which flourished in age-old minhag Sefard

The local Arabs recognized the leader in their midst, and honored and revered him, too. Soon Reb Shimon was appointed the personal physician of the Pasha.

Reb Shimon Lavi passed away at about 100 years old, in either 1580 or 1585. People flocked to his kever, both Yidden and, l’havdil, Arabs, and all attributed their salvations to his merit. And for generations, Yidden have been echoing the song of the soul that he composed.

If you’ve ever spent Shabbos in Meron or Tzefas, you probably heard Bar Yochai sung in shul on Friday night, before K’gavna. In other places in the world, many Sefardim sing it every Shabbos, and it is commonly sung by Ashkenazim on the Shabbos before Lag Ba’omer. With its kabbalistic intent, it is said that the song bears the great segulah to awaken the neshamah. May we be zoche!

On Lag Ba’omer, the day Reb Shimon bar Yochai was niftar, a great light was spread to the world. As Reb Shimon revealed secrets of the Torah, the house was filled with an ethereal glow, and fire surrounded it from the outside.

The Torah references cutting a boy’s hair at age three in Vayikra (13:33): “ V’hisgalach — and he shall be shorn,” with the gimmel in the word appearing larger than the rest of the letters. The verse is in pasuk 33, pointing at the source for the custom of having an upsherin take place on Lag Ba’omer specifically, the 33rd day of the omer

It is told that the Arizal brought his son to Meron for his upsherin, which was celebrated with joy and festivities.

With the completion of the Zohar Hakadosh, the road to recording Torah she’baal peh was paved. This aroused a great simcha, as it ensured the secrets of the Torah would never be forgotten.

The Arizal taught that on the day of his yahrzeit, Reb Shimon stands at his tziyun and welcomes and bentches everyone who comes to take part in his simcha. Every person who joins allows Reb Shimon’s simcha to be complete, and thus merits being granted anything he may need.

The Beis Aharon famously stated that whoever believes in Reb Shimon, derives chizuk from Reb Shimon.

“Mah Hakadosh Baruch Hu lakol, af Rabi Shimon lakol! ” Every Yid — on whichever level he may be — can access the benefits of Reb Shimon.

Reb Shimon kindles a fire of hope in each of us, uniting all of Klal Yisroel as one.

The minhag to play with a bow and arrow commemorates the mesorah that no rainbow was ever seen during Reb Shimon’s lifetime, as we sing in V’amartem Koh L’choi: “Kol yamav asher chaya os hakeshes loh nihyah.”

The rainbow, indicative that the people are deserving of punishment, was unnecessary, since Reb Shimon’s zechus protected the world.

The eis ratzon on this day is tremendous. It is a time when we can daven for both ruchnius and gashmius, as the wellsprings of brachos and yeshuos in the zechus of Reb Shimon bar Yochai are open to anyone who asks.

As the Rizhiner, zt”l, said, while the joy in Meron on Lag Ba’omer is reminiscent of Simchas Torah, inside the me’arah, it is like Yom Kippur.

There is a well-known minhag to commit to donating chai rotel (a measurement of 54 liters of drink) the following year on Lag Ba’omer if one will merit the yeshuah he is waiting for. This segulah can be traced back to the Gemara (Shabbos 33b), which cites that when Reb Shimon emerged from the cave, he stated, “Since a miracle has transpired for me, I will repair something for the sake of others.”

What better way to do for others than to distribute drinks in Meron, near the kever of Reb Shimon, after experiencing a miracle?

Reb Moshe Goldman, z”l, is an icon in the world of classic, chassidishe music. He was behind the production of dozens of albums during his lifetime, and his works continue to impact the frum music scene worldwide. Here, his family reflects on a lifetime of musical contributions.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Born in Germany shortly after World War II, Reb Moshe Goldman immigrated with his family to Eretz Yisroel at the age of two. His family settled in the Katamon neighborhood in Yerushalayim.

Young Moshe grew up in postwar Yerushalayim, where there was little in terms of material value, but plenty in courage, resilience and hope. Reb Moshe attended the Satmar Talmud Torah, alongside many young boys who would later become leaders of the generation. Among them was the Belzer Rav, shlit”a, who enjoyed listening to his musical compositions. At the time, he was being primed to become Rebbe, and he expressed interest in learning niggunim from different chassidishe courts, specifically those of the Kedushas Zion and Reb Shlomo Bobover. During recess break in cheder, Reb Moshe would sing Bobov niggunim with the future Belzer Rav.

Music ran in the Goldman family genes; Reb Moshe’s father composed many niggunim as well. Some of his popular songs include Haneiros Halalu, Shevach Yekar, Bameh Yizakeh Naar, and more. Reb Moshe albums eventually featured some of these niggunim.

Upon his marriage, Reb Moshe moved to the United States and settled in Boro Park.

Everlasting Compositions

Reb Moshe never viewed himself as a strong vocalist; he identified his strength

in composing. He was very familiar with the world of music, especially music of previous generations. In fact, he was able to identify the composer of songs just by listening to the tunes. His extensive knowledge of music, especially traditional and chassidishe niggunim, allowed him to easily innovate within this genre.

Some of Reb Moshe’s most ubiquitous niggunim include Baruch Kel Elyon, which Yidden the world over sing at their Shabbos seudos, and Pnei L’elbon, which he composed on a Yom Kippur night. Today, many shuls sing Reb Moshe’s Pnei L’elbon on Yom Kippur. These niggunim are deeply embedded in the hearts of many, and have become indispensable in many shuls, at weddings and many other occasions.

son, the first grandson of the Bobover Rebbe Reb Shlomo, Reb Moshe created a song that the Rebbe greatly appreciated.

The Bobover Rav wrote a kinnos for Tisha B’Av, which Bobover chassidim say each year. One year, Reb Moshe crafted a lengthy, soulful niggun to match the kinnos. Initially composed as a slow and peaceful tune, Reb Moshe reworked it at Rebbe Shlomo’s behest to evoke a deeper, more poignant response, aligning with the solemnity of the day.

For a short time, Reb Moshe had a job polishing diamonds on 47th Street. Interestingly enough, sitting in the same room with him was Reb Yom Tov Ehrlich.

“I don’t know how great the

diamonds came out,” Reb Moshe would say about their time spent together, “but the niggunim came out really good.”

Reb Moshe would often be on the road, traveling from Brooklyn to Upstate New York for work. He attributed the births of many musical creations to those long drives. On one occasion, he crafted the melody “Va’al Yedei Avadecha Hanevi’im, Kasuv Leimar ” while traveling. Somewhere along the way, he forgot the first part of the melody. He knew that the composition was something that would inspire people, and it bothered him deeply that he’d “lost” it. Recalling how tzaddikim have stated that one can recall a memory by going back to the spot where inspiration initially struck, he drove back two hours to the spot where he had first become inspired to compose the piece, and he managed to recapture the lost song!

Another piece that inspired thousands is Reb Moshe’s Elokai Neshama, an extremely moving piece that has become very popular in many circles. He initially composed this song in honor of a bochur who was battling a terminal illness and was dealing with severe, debilitating pain. Watching how others cared for this special neshamah touched Reb Moshe very deeply and inspired this stirring song. After the bochur was niftar, Reb Moshe went to visit the family while they

were sitting shivah, and there, he resolved to add a more upbeat stanza to the ending, reflecting on the fact that this young man’s neshamah was now in a better, pain-free place, a fact that brought the family much comfort.

Camp Shalva Collection

One summer, Reb Moshe accepted a position as camp director at Camp Shalva, Bobov boys’ camp. The greatest highlight of the summer was when Reb Moshe would sing his compositions with the boys. Though he was a camp director for only one summer, that summer left a great impact. The songs he had taught the boys that summer were sung every year, all summer long.

Camp Shalva niggunim and Reb Moshe Goldman soon became synonymous, and Reb Moshe would visit Camp

Shalva each summer on Motzei Shabbos Nachamu for an evening of heartfelt song and inspiration. He would sing old favorites and teach his newest compositions. The campers would be swept away in the moment, wishing the night would go on forever.

In subsequent years, Reb Dovid Kessler, who was a head counselor at Camp Shalva, started a choir for the musicallyinclined boys in camp so that these boys could give voice to their talents. The choir would record their songs in the camp shul during empty pockets of time, under Reb Dovid’s leadership. Since these recordings contained vocals without music, Reb Dovid allowed Dov Shurin (a popular radio host at the time) to play recordings of the choir on his radio station during sefirah

One summer, when Reb Moshe came up to camp to visit his sons, he bumped into Dov Shurin. Since the songs in the choir were mostly Reb Moshe’s compositions, Dov suggested that Reb Moshe produce a tape of these now-popular niggunim. Thus began the start of the Camp Shalva albums, a series that soon became a classic in Jewish homes across and beyond the chassidishe velt

While Reb Moshe did not promote the idea of singling out a yeled hapeleh, a wonderchild, his albums are known for the voices of young children of the Camp Shalva choirs. He believed that the voices of innocent children raised in song contained a special purity that could move people tremendously. Later albums included adults, including some of his own sons.

Production Scene

When the first Camp Shalva album was produced in 1983, times were simple, and

expectations were relatively low. While Camp Shalva albums did not drastically raise the bar, they made sure to move and upgrade with the times. The albums went from simple choirs to arranged medleys to professional mixing to live instruments.

Reb Moshe kept to high standards. He utilized the skills of professional producers such as Yisroel Lamm, Moshe Laufer and Bob Smith (of Neshama Orchestra fame). His sons Reb Yanky and Reb Chaim Yitzchok were both involved in the album productions in various capacities over the years as well. Each one turned into a bestseller, touching many hearts and souls, and propelling listeners to come back for more.

For Reb Moshe, producing albums was never a business; it was always about inspiring Yidden to connect to the Ribbono Shel Olam. If he ever turned a profit from an album, he’d use it to fund his next album.

While Reb Moshe Goldman is best known for the Camp Shalva series, he produced three different series: Camp Shalva, Chagim Uzmanim, and Shirei Chinuch (for young children).

A Life of Music

Despite his busy schedule and heavy involvement in the music scene, Reb Moshe gladly gave of his time to anyone who would come to him for advice. There were many singers who reached out to Reb Moshe for advice on how to get

started in the music industry. He’d listen to each one, giving targeted advice on where he felt they could make their mark. The entry to the music industry is rife with rejection, and Reb Moshe would patiently encourage singers who were rejected by producers by praising their music and pointing out their strengths.

Reb Moshe’s sons recall that he never criticized another Yid in the industry. Even when the world of Jewish music began changing, and people were quick to criticize up-and-coming singers who introduced new trends, Reb Moshe was always mindful not to speak out against his fellow Yidden.

In one episode, there were people who quoted Reb Moshe as having belittled a specific singer. In response, Reb Moshe spent a couple of hours in conversation with that singer, proving that he had nothing but gracious feelings for him.

When Reb Moshe was asked about the musical trend of unbecoming rock n’ roll, all he said was, “As long as they are producing music, I will produce music.” He made it his mission to balance the musical scene with ehrliche music.

Reb Moshe’s sons are working on reproducing the Camp Shalva series and reviving classic hits in an ongoing effort to reconnect audiences with the traditional music they’ve grown up with. While Reb Moshe passed away on 22 Adar 5770, his legacy lives on. Generations of children have grown up, and continue to grow up, on his pure, heartfelt niggunim

Of the dozens of albums that Reb Moshe produced, Kanesher, the twelfth album, is considered the most popular one. It was the first album to be produced in Goldman’s studio.

For a store dedicated to everything sound, Keynote Music doesn’t seem to be making lots of noise. Since much of their business happens online, the storefront is quiet, and customers enter by appointment only. But that’s the way the management likes it. After all, they cater to those who are serious about their music.

That’s exactly why, in honor of Lag Ba’omer, TheMonsey View reached out to the Keynote team for a comprehensive tour. If you’re passionate about music, and you’re wondering what instrument, product or model is right for you, you’ve come to the right place.

A Key Question

We begin with the question Keynote probably hears multiple times a day: “My kid is really musical and is begging to learn an instrument. Where do we start?”

“There’s a reason the keyboard is so popular,” Eliezer, the manager at Keynote, says. “It’s simple to figure out and fun to learn, both important factors when it comes to teaching a kid to play.”

As he explains, besides taking lessons, the only way a kid will learn is by practicing, and other instruments — like the violin, for instance — require practice that’s boring and repetitive. Kids will quickly grow tired of practicing their notes.

“Nevertheless,” Eliezer continues, “while the keyboard is the easiest instrument to play — at least physically, because there’s no need to hold it while playing — it’s also the instrument most difficult to master.”

That sounds almost contradictory, but he explains that while other instruments may be more difficult to play — again, like the violin — the piano or keyboard is most difficult to play really well.

“The reason is simple,” Eliezer says. “When you play violin, you’re playing only the melody — unless you’re part of an orchestra, in which case you may be charged with producing harmony. When you’re playing guitar, you’re playing either the melody or the chords. But when you’re playing piano, you’re playing the melody, chords and bass all at the same time.”

Put that way, it does sound impressive — and also true. While it may be easy to bang out a nursery rhyme on a keyboard, it takes superb skill to produce the kind of flawless, layered music that pierces the heart. A violin, on the other hand, may be difficult to play at first, but once the skill is established, the musician is expected to produce only a single layer of music.

Keyboard and Piano

We continue our tour in the order of popularity, which means keyboard features first.

“Before we start,” Eliezer says, “I’d like to point out that we don’t sell toys. We only sell quality, brand-name instruments for people who are seriously interested in playing music.”

Now that that’s been established, he lists the options.

“The most basic keyboard, which we sell to true beginners, costs about $150. This keyboard does not feature touch-sensitive keys.”

For the uninitiated, touch-sensitive keys means that the keys respond to how softly or hard they’re pressed. The more pressure applied to the key, the louder the note will play. This means that the musician can play with emotion, and that his passion will come through with the notes. At Keynote, for approximately $200, a customer can walk out with a keyboard that boasts touch-sensitive keys.

According to Eliezer, the next best keyboard sells for about $350. It has a larger variety of sounds, and it also has the capability to be loaded with about ten beats of Jewish music.

“Beats is a whole market on its own,” Eliezer explains. “Since our music is different from secular music, any good musician will want beats that have been created for our clientele. There’s horah, there’s freilach, there’s debka — many different heimishe styles that musicians play at simchas and events. This keyboard is great for anyone who knows more about music, and would want to play with a little more geshmak.”

This holds true for top $4,000 keyboards as well. Musicians don’t use the beats included by the manufacturer;

instead, they pay thousands of dollars for beats developed for Jewish music.

From the $350 range, prices jump to $1,200 and up. These keyboards are for professionals and can store hundreds of beats. They also produce more beautiful notes.

“These Yiddishe beats and sounds are built from the ground up,” says Eliezer, and the pride is evident in his voice. “We actually go to a studio and record a clarinet, for instance, playing the notes. Then we put those notes into the keyboard. There’s no comparing the quality and the sound of these manually crafted notes. Same with other instruments. We record them in a studio, load them onto the keyboard, and build the notes. Then we take these custom-made notes and build the beats. That’s why, the more memory a keyboard has, the nicer sounds it can play.”

What about pianos? Have keyboards completely replaced these beauties?

“Not at all,” says Eliezer. “About ten percent of all keyboard sales are for real pianos. The keys are more alive, more so than that of a keyboard. When playing a piano, you’ll feel that the keys are more weighted, because you’re actually pulling the strings.”

And since pianos also come in digital versions today, adults can play when kids are asleep.

“With acoustic pianos, there’s no such thing, but all a digital piano needs is a pair of earphones, and the sound is contained.”

Guitar

The guitar is our next instrument of interest.

“If someone walks into Keynote requesting a guitar for a kid,” Eliezer says, “the first question will be how old the child is, and the second will be if they play already.”

The age — or height, really — of the kid will determine the size guitar they need, and their level of skill will determine the quality. A beginner will get a decent, but cheaper, option, and someone who already plays will be matched with a guitar of better quality.

“With guitars, as well, we don’t carry junk,” Eliezer clarifies. “Offbrand guitars mean the strings are bound to get loose. With brand-name pieces, the strings stay in place much better.”

So what, then, is a cheaper option when it comes to guitars? Eliezer explains:

“A guitar’s price depends on the wood it’s been crafted from. A cheaper guitar will be crafted from pressed wood; those cost in the range of $150 to $200. A better guitar will cost about $300. Those are solid wood inside, with pressed wood used only on the top. Finally, a solid wood guitar costs about $400, and up from there.”

A $400 guitar will be crafted from mahogany. A

guitar made from rosewood will put you back about $700 or $800. Finally, a guitar made of walnut will cost in the $1,000 range.

“The better the quality of the wood, the higher the quality of the sound,” Elizer says. “It all depends on what you want the guitar to do. Interestingly,” he adds, “when trying out different guitars, most customers will find that

the mahogany guitar has a nicer sound. But after a half year of use, the rosewood guitar will have absorbed the music being played, and from that point on, its sound will be that much sweeter.”

Many guitars of the $300 range and up feature a cutaway, which is a cut-out on one side of the guitar that allows for easier maneuverability when playing higher notes. Another feature some guitars have is a pickup, which converts the vibrations of the guitar into an electric signal that can then be amplified with a speaker.

“The pickup is a fairly new innovation,” Eliezer says. “It’s only about 30 years old. The benefit is that there’s no longer a need to stick a clip mic near the guitar to amplify its sound, which is great, because a mic picks up all the surrounding sounds as well.”

Some music teachers prefer that their students first learn to play guitar on a classical guitar, which is an acoustic guitar that boasts three nylon strings and three steel strings, versus a guitar with six steel strings. It’s easier to play for beginners, who are still figuring out how to hold the strings down, even though the classical guitar’s sound is a bit deeper than that of a regular guitar.

When a customer walks into the store, and they’re debating whether or not to purchase a guitar over the violin or another instrument, Eliezer likes to provide them with some historical context.

“We don’t know much about the instruments that were in the Beis Hamikdash, but we definitely know that there were no violins; violins were only invented some 500 years ago. On the other hand, the Mishnah in Maseches Keilim (10:8) mentions an instrument that featured in the Beis Hamikdash and was held over the stomach. The only instrument that is held over the stomach is the guitar.”

The Leviim in the Beis Hamikdash also played percussion instruments and wind instruments, but the string instruments they played were guitars and harps, not violins.

“Yiddish songs may mention Dovid Hamelech playing the fiddele, but that may be only because it rhymes with Yiddele or liddele,” Eliezer quips. “Dovid Hamelech, as we know, played the harp.”

“The violin definitely has that warmth that goes right to the neshamah, but guitars — especially acoustic guitars — aren’t only about the cooler side of the musical scene.”

Next up is the violin. The sweet voice of the fiddle pierces the very heavens; there’s a good reason it’s such a beloved instrument.

“Violins start at under $200,” Eliezer says, “and like guitars, the cheaper models are crafted from pressed wood. High-quality, solid wood violins cost anywhere from $200 to $1,500, depending on the quality of the wood.”

Like guitars, violins can also be equipped with a pickup so the sound can be amplified.

“When it comes to violins,” Eliezer continues, “there’s also a market for antique violins, and there’s actually a good reason for that. The wood of an older violin absorbs sound better, and the music such a violin produces will be that much sweeter.”

Keynote doesn’t sell antique violins, which can range anywhere between $2,000 and $10,000, but they try to help interested customers find a good deal.

Violin Drums

The drum is a favorite among boys with mounds of energy. But first comes the question: acoustic or electric?

Like acoustic guitars and pianos, an acoustic drum does create sound that is more live. However, acoustic drums are loud, and they can’t be muted with earphones so only the player can hear it. The price range is also considerably higher.

“Many people are surprised at the price of a full drum set,” Eliezer says. “They also don’t know that a full set is a composite of a bunch of different parts manufactured by different companies. Starter sets begin at $500, and higher-quality, professional sets sell for a few thousand dollars.”

Once again, the quality of the final product depends on the wood the drums are made from. In fact, Eliezer says that better drums boast multiple layers of wood, which are sometimes a mix of different wood types for more improved sound effects.

“The benefits of electric drums,” he continues, “are first their price, which is generally more economical, and then their ability to be muted. But electric drums will never be as professional as their acoustic counterparts.”

Mics

While not an instrument per se, the mic is one of the most important pieces of equipment on any musical scene.

“When someone comes in to purchase a mic,” Eliezer says, “the first question they’ll get is what they’re planning to use the mic for. That’ll tell us whether the customer needs a dynamic mic or a condenser.”

As he explains, a dynamic mic picks up sound from only two inches away. At a wedding, for instance, a dynamic mic will ensure that the guests only hear the singer singing, and not the blasting music nor the background noise, through the singer’s mic.

“You know the awful screeching you sometimes hear through the mic at a kids’ performance?” Eliezer asks. “That’s actually the background sound going into the mic, out of the speaker, and back into the mic and back out of the speaker in endless circles that turns into a screech that has everyone jumping up to clap their hands over their ears.”

In order to prevent this from happening at weddings or any other events, the singer uses a dynamic mic, which only amplifies sound from two inches away or so.

“That’s why you’ll often find singers holding the mic so close to their mouth,” Eliezer explains.

Some of these dynamic mics absorb the sound only from the top, and others absorb the sound also from the front, but whatever the case, the dynamic mic is the right choice for anyone using the mic for singing.

A condenser, on the other hand, is designed to pick up every sound in the room. If you’re recording someone on a condenser and a truck passes outside, for instance, the condenser will pick up the rumble.

“That’s the reason studios are well insulated,” Eliezer says.

Due to the nature of the condenser, this is the mic of choice for professional recording, where you want to hear every detail of the person’s voice.

“If you’d put a condenser into a wedding hall,” Eliezer adds, “it’ll spend the night screeching.”

That’s why you’ll mostly find condensers in studios or at performances, where you want to pick up the voices of a group with a single mic.

Many professionals recording themselves opt to go with condensers that match their voice. Some condensers are great for a wide range of voices, but others work best when paired with thin voices, and still others do better with richer baritones.

“Those opening a studio,” Eliezer advises, “would do well getting a variety of condensers so singers can be matched with the appropriate mic.”

Mixers

“Sometimes I have parents calling me to tell me that their kid wants a mixer,” Eliezer says, “but they don’t even know what it does. Other times, people want a mixer to connect their keyboard to a speaker, but you don’t need a mixer for that. In truth, a person only needs a mixer if they want to connect more than one instrument to a speaker.”

So what is a mixer?

A mixer is the machine that receives input from every mic and instrument present, and then provides output in the form of sound produced from speakers and earphones. The mixer ensures that each mic and instrument is linked to the speaker, and more importantly, it allows for fiddling with individual frequencies so the sounds all meld beautifully together. Also, the mixer allows each singer and/or musician to hear himself louder than the remaining artists on his personal earphones or speaker, which is crucial when playing live music.

Additionally, a good mixer will also have the ability to add effects to the produced sound, as well as to “save the scene,” which means it’ll remember a specific configuration of instruments, speakers and earphones so that if the same group gathers again at the same location — say a specific band and singer at a oft-used wedding hall — there will be no need to reconfigure the division of sounds.

Professional mixers come in a varying number of channels. There can be six-channel mixers (those sell for under $200) as well as 32-channel mixers (those will put you back more like $2,000), and customers are matched to the one that’s right for them based on how many instruments and mics they’re planning to connect to the mixer.

Speakers

Here’s a trick question: If you want a super loud speaker, do you want one with more watts that can go up to 125 decibels, or one with less watts that can go up to 132 decibels?

“There’s this huge misconception when it comes to speakers,” Eliezer says. “Every day, I’ll have a customer coming in and asking for the speaker that has the most watts. What they’re looking for is the loudest speaker I have. Many people don’t realize that volume is measured in decibels, and that once you have the right decibel, you want the least watts possible. Why should the speaker pull more electricity than it has to?”

A quality speaker features a greater decibel level for less watts. But not always does the customer need the most powerful speaker.

“Studios, for instance,” Eliezer says, “may not necessarily need a speaker with a super high decibel level. What they should get instead is a speaker with a wooden cabinet, which produces a nicer sound. It’ll cost them less, too.”

And if you’re planning an outdoor event — like on Lag Ba’omer, for example — then a third kind of speaker is the one you need.

“It’s called a line array,” Eliezer explains, “and it features a few rows of speakers, one on top of the other. People sometimes wonder why they need so many speakers, but what they don’t know is that on the inside of the machines, each individual speaker is facing a different direction.”

It’s easy to get smarter about the musical scene when the one sharing the information is as passionate as Eliezer is — and this is a good tip for anyone dabbling in music. Choose an instrument you’re passionate about, give it your all, and soon you’ll be giving your music a voice that can soar to the very skies.

My husband is a maggid shiur, so when he lost his voice one summer, no one thought much of it. He literally spends most of his time speaking, so it made sense. An annoyance, certainly. But at least it was bein hazmanim, so it wasn’t that much of an issue. He would drink tea for a few days and try to rest his voice, he figured, and everything would be fine.

He did rest his voice; he had no choice. He literally couldn’t talk. The “few days” turned into a few weeks, and still, he could hardly eke out a whisper. Bein hazmanim was fading fast; soon he would be giving shiur again. How was this supposed to work?

Without me having to nudge (much), he went to the doctor. The doctor sent him to an ENT, who suspected a polyp on his vocal cords. More appointments for imaging confirmed the diagnosis. Now what?

Although the polyp was benign and not, relatively speaking, a medical crisis, for us it was a real problem. The raspy whisper that was all he could conjure up was annoying and inconvenient when he tried to communicate with me and the kids, and diminished the quality of whatever he was trying to say. He also couldn’t make himself heard over the phone at all. But just like a builder wields a hammer and a musician needs his instrument, a rebbi’s voice is the tool of his trade. Without a voice, he couldn’t teach. He was wary of surgery, but that was the only option the ENT offered. With no other avenue, we started making phone calls.

It took a few days to identify the best surgeon for this condition (we were lucky to have “good insurance” so we could see him), and a few more days (and many more phone calls) to secure an appointment. Finally, in early September, my husband went for his consultation.

I wish I could say I stayed home and said Tehillim while he

was out — but I didn’t. I stayed home and cooked supper and tried to get the kids to eat and cleaned up from supper and tried to get the kids to do their homework… like I do every day. Eventually the house quieted down, and I returned work calls while I tried to prepare everything for the next day.

I was on the phone with a client, Liba, when my husband finally called. Although I try to be professional, Liba was the sister of a friend, and I was anxious to hear my husband’s report, so I asked her to hold for a minute.

“What did the surgeon say?”

“He said I need surgery,” my husband said. He strained to make himself heard over the phone, and his voice was low and raspy.

I sighed. What had I expected? He was a surgeon, after all.

“Yeah.” He sighed too. “I guess we’ll talk about the technicalities when I get home.” He hung up.

“Sorry about that,” I said when I returned to the call. I felt like I had to offer some explanation, so I blurted out, “That was my husband. He just spoke with a surgeon about operating to remove a polyp on his vocal cords.”

“What surgeon?”

Why does she care? I thought. But I told her, naming the surgeon we had found, who’d been recommended by all as the top in the field.

“Don’t do the surgery,” Liba said.

“He’s a top surgeon,” I said. “The best in the field.” And you own a shoe store, I thought, but didn’t say. Who are you to give medical advice?

“I know who he is,” Liba said. She listed all his credentials. “And you’re right, he is top in the field. You’re lucky you have good enough insurance to get in to him. But you still shouldn’t use him.”

“What are you talking about?”

“My husband had a vocal polyp last year,” Liba continued. “He totally couldn’t talk. It was a real problem. He tried tons of different things, but in the end they said there was no way to avoid surgery. He used the same surgeon your husband went to today.”

“Wow.” This was crazy. “And what happened?”

“He did the surgery. It was successful. They removed the polyp, and it healed well. My husband was able to talk again.”

“So…?”

“The problem was that the polyp came back.”

“What!” I hadn’t realized that could happen.

“Yeah. Whatever caused the polyp to form in the first place was obviously still an issue, because it reformed pretty soon after the surgery, and we were back to square one. It’s actually pretty common, I think.”

I couldn’t believe this.

“But don’t worry,” Liba added quickly. “He didn’t redo the surgery. He found someone who does voice therapy. He taught my husband how to use his voice properly, and breathe in a certain way when he talks. The new polyp disappeared, and he hasn’t had any problems since.”

As she finished, my husband walked in. I quickly repeated everything Liba had told me.

“Who’s the voice trainer?” I said into the phone. “Is he in the tristate area? Did your husband have to wait to see him? Was it very expensive?” Not that it mattered. We would have to find a way to make it happen.

“Well, it was hard to get in,” Liba admitted. “He learns most of the day — he does this on the side — so he only sees a couple of clients at a time. It took us a while to even get in touch with him.” Liba gave me the name. “Tzvi Sebrenik. He actually lives in Lakewood, like you. He works out of his house.” She named the street.

I swallowed. “Liba,” I said, “ My husband waved to get my attention. “I’m going to Ma’ariv,” he mouthed.

At Ma’ariv, he walked over to Rabbi Sebrenik. “Hashem sent me to you,” he said.

Baruch Hashem cises were grueling, but they were successful. Within a couple weeks, my husband had his voice back. He never went back to the surgeon, and he never had a problem with hoarseness again. It was my husband who lost his voice — but the us all speechless.

No, you cannot lay in bed. Mixing up lie and lay is one of the most common mistakes speakers of the English language make. And there’s a reason for it too. Lay and lie are irregular words and so confusing. And it doesn’t help anyone that the past tense of lie is lay!

Lay is transitive and requires an object to act upon (which needs to follow the word lay), and lie is intransitive, describing something moving on its own or already in position.

To lie is to be in a flat position. To lay is to put something down flat. Therefore, you lie in bed, but you lay the blanket down on the bed. Similarly, a child can lay his briefcase on the floor and then leave it lying around until you force him to pick it up.
