Families of special children are unsung heroes. We all know that. Yes, they know they’ve been chosen for a special Nisayon. Yes, they embrace it with love.

But it’s not easy, and they need all the support they can get.

Lev with Love has become synonymous with pure giving, inspired by two passionate teenagers who made it their mission to galvanize their peers on behalf of special kids and their families. Now, it’s grown into something bigger, better, and bolder – a full-fledged organization with full-time employees, hundreds of children and volunteers, and a full gamut of programming.

And here’s the truth.

Lev with Love volunteers are not just girls providing respite hours and relief to parents and families – they are lifesavers.

Creating a culture of Chesed.

Allowing parents to feel human again. Spreading positivity and acceptance. Literally, saving lives.

Families of special children have discovered a new life with Lev with Love. That’s 500 families, with 1,200 volunteers and 4 branches across the tri-state area. But it’s not just time that gives the families relief. It’s the Heartbeat performances, the mothers’ events,

the LBA division for boys, the Shabbatons, the Chol Hamoed trips, and everything in between.

The best part? There’s no red tape. No reams of paperwork. No fancy applications, evaluations, or approvals.

Because Lev with Love never says no.

“You have no idea what you are doing for us – and for Klal Yisroel,” says Rabbi Nosson Nussbaum, a LWL father. Avi Koenig, a LWL father, agrees. “Don’t stop what you’re doing! These families need this like they need to breathe air.”

I want to thank you for the new serial on budgeting. Lately it’s become increasingly difficult to keep up with all the trends while staying on a budget. Some people seem to prioritize a brand-name wardrobe for the kids, a house remodel or lavish simchos, while they are simply not paying their s’char limud or rent. What people can see is apparently more important to them. I’m afraid that soon many more people will have a $100K debt problem with no way to get out of it.

QUESTION OF POWER

Dear Esty,

I thoroughly enjoyed your story from beginning to end, including the postscript. I really admire the honesty and empathy you have, which comes through so clearly in your work. The only thing that disappointed me was that there was a scene, closer to the beginning, where Malky is really nasty to Chevi, and Chevi then “passes it on” to Fraidy. I kept waiting for that to be addressed, but you never mentioned it again. Was that just a one-off incident, or was there more subtle bullying that wasn’t being recognized? Maybe Lani wrote it off as normal sibling rivalry, but over time it wore Chevi down, and in order to reassert herself, she began bullying Fraidy. Sometimes something can simmer for a long time but only explodes when something big triggers it, and then the problem is attributed to the trigger rather than to the source. Just a thought... I’d love to hear your take.

The incident with Malky at the dentist may have been a trigger that led Chevi to bully Fraidy at the next opportunity — or not. I deliberately didn’t explore that angle, because we weren’t here to explore Chevi’s story. Had she been our protagonist, I probably would’ve developed her into a character you can’t help liking, someone you root for, someone whose mistakes you forgive because you know her whole life and her whole story. I specifically didn’t want to do that because, as I wrote in my postscript, it doesn’t matter. Sources and triggers may be real and may serve as an explanation for certain behaviors. But they can’t and never should serve as an excuse. Even if Chevi was suffering severely, bullying others still isn’t justified.

Lani, albeit reluctantly, took Chevi for help when she was made aware of the bullying situation. But I never took readers into the therapy room with Chevi, because that was beyond the scope of this story. (Okay, also because I hate writing therapy scenes.) Maybe one day we can explore the other side of the bullying story. No doubt, we would find it eye-opening. Maybe we could even brainstorm for ways to help the bully, because a bully clearly needs help. But until then, in cases of bullying, there needs to be a zero tolerance policy in place.

Reading the articles about returning merchandise brought back childhood memories of the disposable camera. Those old enough to remember will recall the joy of purchasing a disposable camera in honor of a trip. The camera had room for a mere 24 pictures, and before we shot one, we made sure that the setup was as perfect as could be and davened to Hashem that it should come out as planned. With no instant view available, we only found out how the pictures came out after paying to have the film developed. There was no such concept as sitting on the bus and deleting pictures, and there was absolutely no shooting pictures for fun. Every picture took thought and preparation, and was 100% final.

Then came along the Ctrl+Z era. If we don’t like a photo we snapped, we can erase it, adjust it, auto-correct it. How geshmak! There are no obligations and no commitments.

And so the trend continues. When it comes to shopping, we don’t have to make a final decision prior to purchase; we can always exchange it or return it. Thus the mentality lives on, affecting every aspect of life and our ability to commit. What a pity.

With Hashem’s Help

The Mishkan was completed, and all of its components were brought to Moshe Rabbeinu so he could erect it ( Shemos 39:33).

Rashi explains that since Moshe had not done any work on the Mishkan, Hakadosh Baruch Hu left the task of setting it up to him. No one else was able to undertake this, since the kerashim (beams) were too heavy to lift.

Moshe asked Hashem, “How is it possible for a human to erect [the Mishkan]?”

Hashem replied, “You work with your hand.” It appeared as if Moshe was erecting it, yet it arose by itself. This is the meaning of the pasuk, “ Hukam hamishkan — The Mishkan stood up by itself” ( Shemos 40:17).

If you take into account how much each beam weighed, this fact is astounding. At 1 by 1.5 amah wide and 9 amos tall, each wooden beam, which was coated in gold, weighed a bit more than three tons!

Lifting a three-ton slab is impossible for a human being. If so, why did Hashem ask Moshe Rabbeinu to use his hands as if he were lifting the kerashim? And how can the pasuk say, “Vayakam Moshe es Hamishkan — Moshe erected the Mishkan” ( Shemos 40:18)?

CHASSIDIM OF THE BAAL SHEM TOV were on a search. They were looking for a new siddur that would be appropriate for their Rebbe to daven with. His siddur was extremely worn and needed to be replaced.

They went from house to house in the village until they came to the home of a simple shepherd. The shepherd informed them that he had a siddur that he had inherited from his grandfather, who was a special maggid. It was a siddur that had been in their family for generations, whose path could be traced back to the Maharam of Mintz, zt”l. As per tradition, the siddur had been handwritten by the Maharam of Mintz himself.

The chassidim looked at each other. Who could be more worthy of using this siddur than the Baal Shem Tov? This simple, illiterate shepherd

couldn’t even read it!

“Would you give it to the Rebbe?” they asked.

With a bit of convincing, the shepherd agreed, and the overjoyed chassidim presented their Rebbe with the special siddur.

When it came time to daven, the Baal Shem Tov examined the siddur for a long time. Finally, he motioned for the ba’al tefillah to begin davening

“Return this siddur to the shepherd immediately!” He added, “No tefillah is nicer than the davening of this shepherd”

My lot in life is to be a shepherd. What can I do? I don’t even know how to read. But I still remember those special tefillos

Soon they were up to Shemoneh Esrei, and the chassidim noticed that the Baal Shem Tov was unsettled. His face was pale, and his lips quivered.

Immediately after davening, the Baal Shem Tov called out, “Return this siddur to the shepherd immediately!” He added, “No tefillah is nicer than the davening of this shepherd.”

It was silent in the shul. The chassidim were very surprised at this turn of events. But when davening was over, they went ahead and returned the siddur

Some curious chassidim were determined to learn what was so special about this simple Yid’s davening. They visited the shepherd to see what they could learn. It came time to daven, and the man placed the siddur on the table. He wrapped himself in his tallis and tefillin and opened the siddur to a random page. Then, he began to shake his entire body forward and backward. His silent shaking intensified, lasting a complete hour.

When he was done, the chassidim asked the shepherd to explain himself.

“I’m a simple Yid,” he replied, “but I have a distinct memory of my grandfather. When I was a young boy, I used to stand behind him and watch as he davened. And this is the way he would shake. You could tell he was pouring out his heart in pure devotion to Hashem! I promised myself that when I grew up, I would daven just like he did.

“My lot in life is to be a shepherd. What can I do? I don’t even know how to read. But I still remember those special tefillos. I use my grandfather’s siddur and imitate him… and I ask Hashem to consider my tefillos like his.”

The chassidim returned to the Baal Shem Tov who said, “I know that this Yid has no idea how to daven. But tell me, is there anyone in the world who can testify that he does know how to daven properly before Hashem?!”

The goal of building the Mishkan was to create a house for Hashem, a place for hashra’as haShechinah, where Hashem could rest among the members of Klal Yisroel. Moshe Rabbeinu wondered, “How could we possibly build a house for Hashem? Whatever we do cannot possibly be worthy of Hashem’s Presence!”

But Hashem emphasized that all He wants from us is that we do our best. We must do what we can, try to set up the Mishkan — and Hashem would fill in what we cannot. Thus, the Mishkan would become a place worthy for Hakadosh Baruch Hu to rest.

This is a lesson for all generations. Just as with the kerashim, which were impossible to lift, all Hashem wants is for us to begin the work, and Hashem does the rest.

As Chazal say, “Haba l’taher, mesayin oso!”

East Ramapo Busing Cuts Dialed Back, At Least for Now

Safety issues prompted the East Ramapo School District to table a proposal to cut busing to 23,000 students, with the issue to be revisited at a later time.

As previously reported in The Monsey View, an $18 million budget deficit had the East Ramapo school board considering

School board president Shimmy Rose reiterated the growing call for the state to revise its formulas, noting that the massive cuts that still need to be made to the budget have created a crisis situation.

“I don’t want to cut any services to the children,” said Rose. “I want to keep all these services. I want the state to come in and help us. And even if we get the budget passed this year, we are still going to be short $19 million and facing these cuts that no one wants.”

Alternative ways of trimming the budget were also discussed, with District Monitor Bruce Singer highlighting a crucial factor that has impacted East Ramapo for years: inequities in the state budget formula. Singer said that the district is being underfunded by $20 million each year, shortchanging East Ramapo by nearly $250 million over the last twelve years.

Lawler Secures Millions for Local Sidewalks, Road Improvements and Other Projects

Congressman Mike Lawler continues to make good on his promise to advocate for residents of New York’s 17th District, announcing last week that he had secured $35.9 million in funding in a newly passed House of Representatives appropriations package.

Among the 17 projects that were funded were six that will benefit residents of Rockland County, four of which will impact Ramapo residents.

Eight million dollars will be used for the Town of Ramapo’s Safer Neighborhoods project, which will install sidewalks in an effort to improve pedestrian safety. Another $1.5 million was allocated to widen Route 306 between Rita and Maple Avenues, with new turning lanes and a crossing signal to be installed. An additional $1 million has been earmarked to create a public transportation system in New Square, with the village im-

proving its bus shelters and purchasing three commuter transit buses in conjunction with the project. Next, $1.6 million would be used to construct a 15,000-square-foot multipurpose community center in Ramapo to serve disadvantaged youth, low-income adults and seniors. Other projects include $1.25 million to improve sewer screenings in Rockland and $800,000 to construct sidewalks and repave damaged roads in Haverstraw.

Lawler said that the projects would significantly improve residents’ quality of life in his district and touted his record of coming through for his constituents.

“By returning quadruple the amount of Community Project Funding that the former member representing NY-17 did in FY2022, it’s clear that we’re delivering for Hudson Valley families,” said Lawler.

Scammers Target E-Z Pass Customers With Fake Texts

If you receive a notification on your phone offering you the opportunity to pay an outstanding electronic toll balance via text message, E-ZPass New York has four short words for you: Don’t click that link.

E-ZPass New York issued a scam alert on its homepage, warning drivers that scammers have been using text messages to collect tolls on behalf of “NY Toll Services.” Rockland Daily shared screenshots of two different SMS messages telling drivers that they need to pay their bills in order to avoid being charged a $60 penalty. One of the texts included a link to a site called tollspayny.com, while the other directed drivers to tollsinfony.com, another bogus web page.

Warning customers not to click the link in the text message, E-ZPass explained that its authorized communications direct customers to just two websites — EZPassNY.com and TollsByMailNY.com. E-ZPass also noted that it will never ask customers for their date of birth or any other identifying information.

Three Under Arrest in Local Car Dealership Scam

Three Bronx men who used fake key fobs to steal cars from Rockland County dealerships were nabbed by police after trying to steal a used Jeep from a Nanuet car lot.

An employee of Rockland Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram on Route 304 contacted police on March 4 regarding two men who had been at the dealership earlier that day, looking at a

used Jeep that was on the dealership’s lot. The employee gave the pair the Grand Cherokee’s key fob so that they could inspect the vehicle, but later noticed that the fob that they had returned to him was not the same one he had given them.

Having received similar reports from other dealerships, the Clarkstown Detective Bureau was prepared for the men to return that night to steal the Jeep, and they spotted the two driving onto the lot at 11:35 p.m. After the two men entered the Jeep, a police officer blocked the car on the lot to prevent it from being stolen and the two suspects fled on foot.

The pair were apprehended by Clarkstown police and identified as 19-year-old Joel Belen and 20-yearold Mankamang Ceesay. Both were slapped with various charges including grand larceny, grand larceny auto and obstruction of governmental administration. Belen was also charged with conspiracy and was held at the Rockland County Jail on $10,000 bond, while Ceesay was also charged with false impersonation and was released on his own recognizance.

A third man, who had driven the car that brought the suspects to the dealership, was apprehended by police after he crashed his vehicle nearby. He was identified as 21-year-old Isaac Boateng and was charged with two counts of grand larceny, resisting arrest and conspiracy. He was remanded to the Rockland County Jail on a warrant.

It took a while for Yoel to become aware of the banging.

He was in that blissful state of deep sleep and hazy dreams, and the knocking didn’t penetrate. But as the banging became louder and louder, and it sounded as if the door would break down, he washed his hands, grabbed his robe and slippers, and hurried to the door before Russy woke up.

Maybe Daniel and Rechy missed their flight and were back at his doorstep?

Before his mind caught up with his actions, and before he checked the surveillance cameras, he opened the door to the icy cold grayness of pre-dawn winter.

His face paled as he came face-toface with two officers brandishing their FBI identification cards.

“Joel Brandwein?” the taller of the

two asked.

Yoel nodded.

“Is everyone okay?” he managed, his body quivering from cold and fear. What had happened to Daniel?

“May we come in?” There was steel in that request. Their cynicism made Yoel’s mouth so dry, he could not talk.

Silently, he moved aside so they could enter.

“You are under arrest.” The shorter of the two grabbed Yoel’s wrists and unceremoniously clicked a pair of handcuffs shut.

Yoel’s mouth opened. He wanted to shout, to ask. But the dryness in his mouth was so all-consuming, he was sure he’d lost his power of speech forever. Instead, he followed their orders and sat down on the couch.

The out-of-body experience continued as they proceeded to ransack his

study and dismantle the living room. He let out a yelp as they carelessly dumped his precious sefarim in haphazard piles all over the place.

But what ripped him apart was watching Russy walk into the living room and taking in the scene.

She grabbed hold of a chair to steady herself and clutched her heart with the other hand.

“And you are?” the taller agent asked. His voice was cold.

“His wife,” she managed.

“Your husband is under arrest. We’ll take him with us.” They collected the pile of papers they’d put aside, wrapped the laptop where he wrote his chiddushim, and hustled him out.

“Russy, it must be a misunderstanding. I didn’t do anything,” Yoel said urgently as they led him out. He was grateful for his ability to say these

words. “Please, please, don’t tell a soul. Not even the kids.”

As the agent gunned the motor, Yoel bent his head low in case any of the neighbors were awake. The last thing he saw was the half collapsed tent in the yard.

Russy sank onto the couch as soon as the men left with Yoel. She stared at the security screen on the wall and watched the predawn gray turn to a gray dawn and then a gray morning.

She watched Mr. Samuels from next door leave for davening, his car smoothly gliding out of his garage.

She watched the housekeeper, Glenda, ring her doorbell once and twice and a third time. The noise felt good as it pealed throughout the house. Russy wanted the ringing to continue and

ter-in-law, left a message. “Hi, Mommy. Last night was beautiful. We’re thinking of using the choir for the bar mitzvah. Can you call me with their phone number?”

The only ray through the grayness was Daniel and Rechy’s message that they were back in Yerushalayim and a thank you for the business class tickets; they slept really well on the flight, and maybe for Pesach they’d be upgraded to first class. Giggle.

And then Chuni again. “Where’s Ta? I can’t reach him.”

Five minutes later, he called again. She grabbed the phone, something rebellious curdling in her throat.

“Hi, Chuni.”

“Hi, Mommy! How are you? The siyum was beautiful.”

He didn’t even wait for her to answer.

Yoel bent his head low in case any of the neighbors were awake. The last thing he saw was the half collapsed tent in the yard

Soon. When she could muster the energy to get her phone.

If she stayed in this position, she wouldn’t have to turn around and look at the mess. She stared at the screen’s image of the backyard, where the halfcollapsed tent still stood. She watched the party rental truck arrive, watched men load the chairs, tables and centerpieces. They left the way they had come. Quiet, professional and quick.

Still, she sat. Then the phones started ringing. The machine picked up the first call.

“Ma, are you home?” Chuni’s voice. “Just wanted to say how beautiful the siyum was.” A second later, she heard her cell phone ring and then ping with a voicemail notification.

It was all about the beautiful siyum. But what did beautiful mean anyway? If they all knew where Yoel was now, would they still call it beautiful? And the fact that she hated having so many guests at family events was also beautiful? Why did they all use that same adjective that meant nothing? And they chas v’shalom wouldn’t mention anything about Zevi.

“Baruch Hashem.” Parve answers were her forte.

“Where’s Ta? He’s not answering my call.”

“Uh, Ta?” she repeated.

“Yup, as in Tatty. Is he at the office already?”

Out of that curdle of rebellion and anger and hunger, she said, “Ta? Where could he be? Must be locked up somewhere.”

“Locked up. Ha! You’re funny, Ma. Where is he locked up? In his office or his study?”

Funny. Funny.

“Beats me,” she answered cryptically.

“Are you okay?” Chuni asked. “Hey, isn’t it Tuesday today? How come you didn’t go to Zeidy?”

Oh my goodness. She’d never missed a Tuesday since her father had been placed at AgeWell after he got the trach. Not that the doctors thought he was aware of his surroundings, but

After that, quiet returned. Also hunger. She tried prying herself off the couch to walk to the kitchen, but her feet wouldn’t hold her up.

She stayed immobile, staring at the screen, until Barry showed up. The lawyer at Brandwein Holdings, LLC, was the only person she had no choice but to let inside.

She stretched her hand to reach the buzzer.

She’d never seen diamonds this size, and she’d told Yoel as much.

“Yeah, but wear it casually,” he’d said, not at all casually.

When she’d gotten home from that dinner, she threw the exquisite knit in a heap on the closet floor, forgetting to remove the pin.

At the second dinner, not even a year later, she had an eternity band on her finger and another list of rules. But no matter how hard she tried, Yoel was never happy with her performance. She was always either too loud or too quiet, too much presence or too little presence.

By the time the fifth one rolled around, she didn’t open her mouth even once. That’s when Yoel had taken to attending events by himself.

He walked in quietly, surveying the scene and whistling. Russy finally turned around and followed the lawyer’s gaze.

Books, sefarim, family documents and random tchotchkes from the recesses of the closets were strewn across the room.

The largest pile consisted of a collection of old plaques of various shades and shapes of mahogany. They’d long stopped hanging those because their walls couldn’t hold so many.

“Can you pass me those plaques?” Russy asked Barry. He placed them on the couch near her.

She picked up a small one, a hexagon shape with lots of gold lettering, circa 1990. It was the first plaque Yoel had ever been presented with.

Even after so many years, she still remembered the excitement. She’d custom-designed a knit suit at Mace Knits for the event.

As they’d been about to leave to the dinner, babysitter in place, make up professionally done, Yoel had handed her a velvet bag with a diamond pin.

She fingered an ornate, mahogany plaque that was also a non-working clock, and a wave of thirst overcame her.

“I’m going to pick up Yoel now,” Barry said after carefully collecting some documents. “It shouldn’t be long. I filed most of the documents already, and he should be home in about an hour. At most two.”

Russy nodded. She desperately needed a cup of water, but she couldn’t find her voice to ask him for one.

“Meanwhile, keep this quiet. It’ll be better for all involved.”

Of course.

“And where can I find a change of clothes for him?”

Russy knew she should really get up and give it to him, but she couldn’t stand.

“It’s on the valet in the bedroom.”

He was back a few minutes later, clothes in hand.

“I’ll be going now,” he said and headed to the door.

She would be alone again.

She heard his footsteps fade as he walked toward the door. A moment later, the footsteps were louder again.

“Eh. Mrs. Brandwein, there’s someone at the door. Can I let her in?” Barry poked his head through the living room door.

“Who is it?” Russy asked weakly.

“It’s Kristina,” a voice sang from the hallway.

INGREDIENTS

1 oz. yeast

¼ cup sugar

½ cup warm water

1 cup oil

½ cup orange juice

2 eggs

4½ cups Wondermills flour

1 tsp. vanilla sugar Pinch of salt

1 jar strawberry jam, for spreading Confectioners’ sugar, for sprinkling

DIRECTIONS

1. Mix yeast, sugar and warm water. Let sit until the yeast bubbles.

2. Add wet ingredients and mix. Combine flour with vanilla sugar and salt, and gradually add to the mixture. Mix until a soft dough forms.

3. Let rise for 45 minutes.

4. Divide dough into 8 or 9 parts.

5. Roll each dough into a small circle. Spread the jam over the dough.

6. Cut into 16 slices.

7. Roll each one into a crescent, beginning at the wide end.

8. Transfer onto a lined baking sheet. Bake at 350° for 15 to 20 minutes. Cool.

9. Sprinkle with confectioners’ sugar.

2. Roll out the dough ¼-inch thick on a floured surface. Cut into mini round circles, approximately 1 inch in diameter. (I used the medicine cup that came with a bottle of Motrin.)

3. Mix the filling ingredients together.

4. Add a pinch of filling to the center of each circle.

5. Pinch into triangles, and bake at 350° for approximately 12 to 14 minutes.

6. Let cool, and drizzle with melted chocolate.

Shimmering waters, a gentle breeze, the grin of a boy holding up a fish he caught all by himself...

Meet Yosef Friedman, a fourteen-year-old bachur who finds both fish and tranquility at local ponds

“I was twelve years old when I went fishing the first time,” Yosef says.“I was part of a group of boys who were being taught to fish by Yehuda Saperstein, a local bachur who does this as a business. Ever since then, I go fishing whenever I have the opportunity.”

And what was the first thing he caught?

“Actually, the first thing I caught was a fishing rod,” Yosef admits with a laugh. “The youngest student in the group cast out his line, let go, and his rod tumbled into the water.”

Yosef fished it out with his own fishing rod, so that made for a great catch. But his skills have improved since that day, and he’s managed to catch real fish.

Learning Curve

While fishing is a super relaxing pastime, there’s more to it than simply a rod and bait.

Yosef mostly goes fishing in local ponds, including those at Willow Tree Park or Lime Kiln Park.

“Lime Kiln has two bodies of waters; the one in the back is great if you’re no longer a beginner,” Yosef says.

Locally, what he can expect to find are either bass, which

are larger fish, and bluegills or pumpkinseeds, which are both smaller fish.

Yosef explains that to catch smaller fish, you need to cast your line near the edge of the water, which is where the smaller fish tend to hang around. That’s why fishing for small fish is great for beginners. To catch the larger bass, you need to cast your line out toward the center of the pond, where the water is deepest and the bass congregate.

Bait for small fish is simple, Yosef says. Bluegills and pumkinseeds will go for anything edible, even if it’s just a piece of bread rolled into a ball. To catch a bass, the lure has to be more impressive, because this large fish will only go for something that appears to be alive. This can either be a worm, a smaller

fish, or an artificial lure, which has a flavor and is designed to move around in the water so it looks like it’s swimming.

“Personally,” Yosef says, “I prefer to use artificial lures. Worms can be stolen by smaller fish, and bass themselves can steal the smaller fish used as bait when they approach the rounded side of the hook and rip off the fish. Lures are designed to stay on the hook.”

In order to keep the lure looking alive, the line, once cast, has to be reeled in ever so slowly to keep the lure moving in the water.

“That’s why it’s good to aim really far out,” Yosef explains. “Once you start reeling the line in, sooner or later it’ll get too close to you, and you’ll need to

cast the line again.”

Can he expect to catch a fish every time he goes fishing?

“Almost always,” he says.

And has he ever caught something more remarkable than a bass… or a fishing rod?

Yosef laughs. “Once, when I was pretty new at this, I was fishing with my family when I felt something really heavy on my rod. It was pretty strange because while it had to be something really big, it wasn’t fighting or moving around at all. Still, as I reeled it in some more, I was sure it was a really, really big fish. Finally I reeled it all the way in, and out popped a tremendous, bass-sized seaweed!”

Passing the Rod Forward

Today Yosef goes fishing whenever he can. Once the weather warms up, he’ll go on Sundays, Fridays, or whenever he has off from yeshiva. By now he’s also part of Yehuda Saperstein’s team, and he trains groups of kids in the manner he was once trained.

“I go out with groups of kids more often than I go fishing myself,” Yosef says. “It isn’t incredibly hard work, but it’s very rewarding. It’s great to see the kids catch a

Going Fishing?

Here’s what Yosef says you need to take along:

ROD – Pretty much any rod should work in local waters, which aren’t too deep, but bear in mind that some rods have different features to help the line get slack when being cast.

HOOK – Sizes vary; you need the hook to match the size of the fish you’d like to catch.

LINE – Different lines support different weights. You also need to account for the weight of the fish swimming away. I like to use a line that can support 15 pounds.

BAIT OR LURE – For smaller fish: worms, bread or anything edible. For larger fish: either smaller fish or artificial lure.

SHARP KNIFE – If the line gets stuck, you’ll need a knife to cut it. Using scissors is more difficult, as the line is very thin and will slip between the two blades.

BUCKET – You’ll need a bucket, especially if you want to keep the fish you catch.

TAPE MEASURE AND FISH SCALE

– In the event you want to keep the fish, you’ll need to make sure it’s large enough as per regulations. And even if you plan to throw the fish back, measuring it is important for bragging purposes!

Business has mostly spread through word of mouth, and also when other park visitors notice the boys fishing and inquire about joining the group. It’s not every day that you visit a park and find up to fifteen young boys casting a line!

What is Yosef’s favorite fishing memory?

“A funny story once happened while I was fishing with the boys. There’s this yellow bobber that’s attached to the line and floats on the water. When it disappears underwater, you know you got a fish. Anyway, there was this snapping turtle that thought the bobber was food, and he kept chasing it and trying to eat it. We kept having to move the line away. Eventually, we caught a fish, but the turtle snapped the fish off the hook and went off with his meal.”

Fish of His Labor

“Fishing is a great outlet,” Yosef says. “It’s the perfect way of using your energy without doing anything crazy.”

Of Law and Limits

Before heading out to your local body of water, familiarize yourself with fishing laws and local regulations.

In New York, anyone over the age of sixteen needs a license to go fishing. Under sixteen, no license is required.

Additionally, some species of fish may only be caught during certain seasons (this varies according to species), and only when they’re over a certain size. There may also be a daily limit. Other species may be caught all year, though you can probably still expect a daily limit.

Bass, for instance, can only be kept between June 15 and November 30, and only if it’s over 12 inches long. For the rest of the year, it’s catch and release only.

“You’re allowed to stretch the lip and the tail to get to the requisite 12 inches,” Yosef adds. “It’s a strange law, but there it is.”

Sunfish, which includes both bluegills and pumpkinseeds, can be caught all year, though there is a daily limit of 25.

“I’m not sure why anyone would want 25 bluegills,” Yosef says. “But that’s the limit, in any case.”

Those out fishing should also pay attention to signs posted at the ponds or lakes themselves. Some parks don’t allow fishing at all, while others will limit fishing to catch and release across the board.

“When it comes to the Hudson,” Yosef says, “the law is a little different because of the toxins that were released by General Electric into the water. Basically, the law puts the limit on fish caught in the Hudson at only one a month so people don’t eat more than that.”

So get smart, learn the area rules, and read the signs.

Best of all, he adds, the water is super relaxing, and when you’re fishing with company, it’s peaceful enough that you don’t have to choose between having fun and schmoozing.

Has Yosef ever eaten fish he’s caught?

“No,” he says. “You lose about twothirds of the fish when you clean it, so the smaller fish aren’t worth eating in the first place, but as it happens, I’ve never eaten a bass either. Bass don’t taste that great, anyway,” Yosef adds. “I’d love to go trout or salmon fishing one day, and then I’d smoke and eat a fish I caught.”

He was close to eating a catch once, when he and his friend caught a beautiful bass on their graduation trip, but the hour was late by then, and with no time left to grill it, they threw it back into the water.

“It was a beautiful 20-inch, threepound bass,” Yosef adds. “That was quite a catch.”

About five years ago, Shimon* watched his friends get married one after another while he remained seated on the yeshivah bench. The situation wouldn’t have felt as hopeless if he didn’t have an older sister, several years his senior, still awaiting her bashert. He knew his parents preferred not to skip her.

One day, he poured his heart out to his maggid shiur, who gave him an idea. It was the beginning of Chodesh Adar. “Take a paper, write the words, ‘Mishenichnas Adar marbin b’simchah — Mazel Adar dagim,’ and hang it on a wall in your home.”

Before Shimon had a chance to react, the maggid shiur continued:

“The sefer Yalkut Avraham, written nearly one hundred years ago by Rav Avraham ben Shabsi, mentions this custom as a segulah. These pesukim bring one to joy, and in the zechus of being b’simcha, we can merit parnassah, gezunt, shalom bayis and yeshuos.”

Chazal in Esther Rabbah (7:11) offer a different reason for Haman’s satisfaction: The mazel of Adar is fish, and fish can be swallowed alive. Haman took this mazel as a sign that he would succeed. He viewed himself as the largest fish around, perfectly capable of swallowing the little fish he perceived Klal Yisroel to be.

Not long thereafter, a true simcha was celebrated in Shimon’s home: His sister was engaged.

What is the secret to the joy of Adar? And what is its connection to fish?

A Fish Out of Water

When Haman drew lots to determine in which month to annihilate Klal Yisroel, he was overjoyed

The Gemara (Bava Basra 85a) says that the face of Moshe was like the face of the sun. Fish live underwater, without ever coming in contact with sunlight. Haman believed that Klal Yisroel could not bask in the spiritual light of Moshe Rabbeinu during this month that is compared to fish, and were thus unprotected. He was confident he could wipe out the entire nation.

But Haman overlooked one point, which ultimately led to his downfall. He didn’t realize that a small fish can also swallow a larger one. He also failed to recognize that Adar was not only the month Moshe Rabbeinu passed away, but also the month he was born.

The end of the story was a perfect v’nahafoch hu. Big fish Haman was devoured by the little fish — and hanged from the very stake he had prepared for his enemy.

And we rejoice happily ever after…

Adar is stuffed to the gills with opportunity. Let’s dive into the fins and scales of this month.

Bountiful Brachah

Fish are very fertile, which is a sign of bracha, fruitfulness and abundance.

Maritime Modesty

Fish live their lives underwater, obscured from the human eye.

This indicates a direct link between tzniyus and bracha. Our chachamim say that publicity detracts from bracha; actions that are carried out discreetly, without loud exposure, have a greater chance of success.

Moshe Rabbeinu, the “most humble of all men,” passed away in Chodesh Adar, embedding humility into the very fabric of Klal Yisroel’s identity.

Ripples of Prosperity

Fish live in water, which symbolizes a never-ending flow of shefa

This abundance has the potential to shower us with everything we need. The key to accumulating the current is to truly believe in the potential of Chodesh Adar. By being happy with what we have, our joy will bring us yeshuos.

Rearing Ruchniyus

Fish proliferate in their self-contained, underwater universe, concealed from observation.

Adar conceals within it the potential for spiritual proliferation in the self-contained universe of each and every Yid. It is the optimal time for self-growth.

Sublime Seven

“Dag,” or fish, has a gematria of seven, which denotes blessing.

After six days of Creation, the seventh day is a special, blessed day. On Shabbos, the seventh day, we eat fish, a zechus to be saved from “dag,” which is an acronym for “din gehinnom.” Fish are worthy of containing gilgulim of tzaddikim, since they did not sin in the Dor HaMabul, which is why they also have the ability to fight din

Incessant Swimming

Fish are in constant motion and do not stop to rest even for a moment, for if they do, they automatically sink to the depths of the sea.

A person who sits idly without doing or pushing himself in any direction will find himself dropping to the depths. Being successful, or even existing in this world altogether, requires constant avodah. Let’s stay afloat!

Fish live in water, which indicates chesed

The month of Adar is overflowing with love, giving and chesed. It’s a time when we can more easily help others, even at the expense of our own comfort, and live life peacefully with those around us.

A Buoyant Bond

A fish is constantly aware of the fact that he is only alive because he is in water; the moment he is removed from the water, he loses his life.

When we are cognizant of our Source of life, we can access the power of Adar. By realizing that nothing and nobody can hurt us because we are completely connected to our Creator and dependent on Him for our survival, we find true reason to rejoice.

Ending the Evil Eye

Fish are not governed by ayin hara.

So, too, in the month of Adar, ayin hara disappears. This is the secret of “Mishenichnas Adar marbin b’simcha.” When a person is in a state of simcha, he may fear that others will cast an evil eye on him. However, in the month of Adar, no Yid is under the spell of ayin hara, and so everyone can genuinely rejoice.

Perfect Protection

Despite being underwater, the eyes of a fish are always wide open.

We ask Hakadosh Baruch Hu to keep His “eyes” open so we may merit shemirah. “Hineh lo yanum v’lo yishan Shomer Yisroel.”

That was like telling me to give up my daily nap (don’t you dare!). Working at home is woven into the very fabric of my life. It allows me to be around for my children, and it allows me to work at times that are convenient for me. In short, it allows me the flexibility in my schedule that I so badly need.

Getting the computer out of the house meant working from out of the house and renting a space that would cut significantly into my income. Both would be extremely difficult to swallow.

But I also so badly wanted to raise the level of purity in my home.

So I davened. I asked Hashem to send me an office right near my home, and I believed Hashem would send me one on a silver platter.

I followed leads and advertised in my area, but nothing was working out. Either the available space was too far, or I’d have to share the space with others, and I needed the quiet and privacy to work effectively.

But I didn’t give up. I asked Hashem to please send me the perfect office.

Around that time, a new family moved in on the ground floor of our building. I became friendly with the new neighbor, Mrs. Levi, and one day I found myself schmoozing with her when we came to say the bracha on the beautifully blooming pomegranate and lemon trees outside. Just after the Levis moved in, they began building an extension. During our conversation about the crazy prices of real estate and never-ending construction, I learned

that one of the new rooms would not be attached to their house. I jumped when I heard that.

“I’ve been searching high and low for office space. Would you rent it to us?” I asked her breathlessly. Well, she didn’t know, she’d talk to her husband, they’d have to see. Also, construction wasn’t quite over yet.

I reported this to my husband, and the chase was on. When my husband met Mr. Levi, he mentioned to him that we’d love to rent their room. Mr. Levi was also noncommittal; he wasn’t sure about his plans for the room yet, and anyway, construction was not yet over. Even though this whole back-and-forth dragged on, I knew in my heart that this room was ours.

I asked Hashem to send me an office right near my home, and I believed Hashem would send me one on a silver platter

Finally, five months after my first conversation with Mrs. Levi, we signed on the dotted line and handed the Levis twelve postdated checks. I knew that the One Who provided me with the office just downstairs of my own home would cover those checks. They were His checks, because I was doing it all for Him.

The computer is out of the house, and as a fringe benefit, the division between home and work is clearer, while my schedule is still flexible.

For years I claimed it was impossible. But when I wanted the impossible and I asked Hashem for it, He sent it to my door.

THE RIGHT PLACE

The first rejection felt like a slap in the face. Why would someone not want our precious son in their school?

“There’s room,” the administration admitted, “but we have other candidates. We’re sorry, but we can’t accept your child.”

We had really wanted to send our son to that cheder. We felt the values were aligned with ours, that most of the parent body was just like us. But despite our hopes and dreams three years in the making, there was no way we were getting in.

We went back to the drawing board and sent out applications to every place we’d feel comfortable sending our son.

Some answers came right away. Don’t even apply. We have no openings.

Some mosdos mailed rejection letters. Some never got back to us.

“Why?” we asked everyone. “What’s wrong with us? We thought we were just a typical frum family! We toe the line. We’re serious about Yiddishkeit. Why wouldn’t anyone take us?”

“Because you’re a balebus,” one person told my husband. “If you’d be learning full time, you’d have better chances.”

“Because you’re not wealthy,” another said. “It’s not a financially prudent decision for a mosad.”

“Because you’re such a plain family. You have no yichus.”

“Because you don’t belong to any of these mosdos. Nobody feels obligated to take you.”

On some level we understood. There are always more applicants than openings, and it’s up to each administration to fill their spots however they see fit.

But this was our child. A beautiful little boy with shining blue eyes for whom we wanted a great chinuch. This was the product of our tefillos. This was the future of our generations. This was our precious child.

The entire parsha chewed away at our egos. We were no longer sure if we were okay. Were we simply not good enough for anyone?

One day, my husband came home with the news.

“There’s a new cheder opening next year. My chavrusa knows the people behind it. He thinks we’d fit in well there.”

I was no longer even daring to hope, and just so tired of the whole thing. “Why should they take us?” I asked.

And even if they would, we had so many doubts. A new cheder ? Just starting out? Who knew if it would last? Who knew what it would turn out to be? Were we ready to go somewhere entirely unestablished and have our child experience all the trial and error?

But we didn’t have too many choices. We called, we applied, and we met with a member of the hanhalah. We liked what we heard. The approach sounded wonderful, the hashkafos something we aspired to.

And most importantly, they seemed to think we were good Yidden. The hanhalah was willing to accept our son.

And then a rented minibus came lumbering to a stop in front of my home. Up the stairs my little boy went, tears spilling out of his eyes — the first time on a bus is so scary — as the bus driver lingered a minute to review the next stop he had to make on this brandnew list.

I waved to the little boy on the little yellow bus as they headed to a tiny temporary two-room cheder, and I davened for his success.

We signed up. Just us and another few families. The cheder was set to open with less than a total of twenty students divided between two grades.

Elul came. Sleek new cheder buses passed by our house as I stood waiting with my little yingele. It tugged at my heart to watch boys bouncing onto the

It’s now a decade and several boys later, and we are so grateful for the school our boys attend. The staff is excellent, the hashkafos solid. The atmosphere is one of Torah and simcha shel mitzvah. We are so happy to send our children there each day.

Every year, when registration time comes, the phone starts to ring.

“How did you get in to this cheder ?” an acquaintance asks. “It’s impossible to even get an application! Do you have any tips?”

“Can you put in a good word for us with the hanhalah?” a relative asks. “I really want my son to get in there.”

And I’m so grateful for the turn of events that led me to such a beautiful place of Torah.

Moving to calm, suburban Manchester from lively, heilige Eretz Yisroel was anticlimactic in so many ways. But we couldn’t even indulge in adapting because we had a more urgent task weighing over our heads: We had nowhere to live.

Cramped in my parents’ busy house was not a long-term solution. We spent our days poring over circulars and making desperate phone calls to real estate agents. Finding a place “in the area” — close to the shuls, stores and mikvaos — was like spotting the proverbial needle in a haystack. Impossible.

So we opened our hearts and dug deep to find trust. After all, the Source of it all held the world and its houses in His palm. We davened and came closer to Hashem and sang in praise even as we squeezed the children into bed each night only for them to soon be woken by a teenager, again.

After a few months of this, my hardworking mother was sitting in the staffroom at Beis Ruchel, nursing a steaming coffee, when Mrs. Marcus, the science teacher, made her announcement.

“I’m moving,” she announced, putting her heavy stack of textbooks down with a thump.

A shuffle of papers as heads turned.

“Can I ask you something?” my mother said. “Is your old house available for rent?”

And just

like that, a beautiful, tastefully decorated house in the heart of the heimishe area fell into our outstretched arms. The price was fair, and compared to our old cramped apartment, this was a mansion. What a catch!

Fun, helpful Yiddishe neighbors were the ribbon on the gaily wrapped gift from Above. We grew close over tears, laughter and borrowed eggs.

And when our little Shiele started cheder at the other end of town (with no school bus), and our kind-hearted neighbor picked him up every single day, saving us the pain and expense of taxis, I knew we had made a really good catch.

THE CONTAGIOUS SIMCHA

Chevy had been my best friend since we were kids. We sat together on the bus every day from preschool through eighth grade, studied together in high school, and even ended up in the same seminary. When we got married the same year and ended up living a block away from each other, no one was even surprised. We just took it for granted that we would always be part of each other’s lives.

And we were. We shared each other’s simchas and lent each other eggs. Our families grew up as closely intertwined as if they were cousins.

My oldest and Chevy’s oldest were about a year apart, but mine was a son and Chevy’s, a daughter. We married Aharon off at 20, but Chevy’s daughter, Mali, remained single. Those years were not easy for Chevy. Besides the stress of shidduchim, her husband went through a severe medical crisis. He survived, baruch Hashem, but remained weak and compromised. Although he recovered, his business did not, and the medical bills had destroyed whatever financial cushion had existed. It was a very difficult period for Chevy and her family, and I tried to be there for her in every way I could.

When Mali was 23, she got engaged. What a beautiful simcha! Chevy was overflowing with joy. Mali glowed, and it seemed to me that the sim-

cha lifted them all above the pain and strain of the last few years. They floated on a cloud of joy and relief.

But I also saw something else. Chevy was still very consumed with her husband’s care. And I could tell that there was no money to make a wedding. When Chevy’s husband was hospitalized again, I offered to take the kallah to a few appointments they had scheduled. This slowly morphed into my taking the kallah to all of her appointments, as well as to accompany her on her errands. I knew that without help, the family’s complications would turn into a crisis. I wanted to catch them before they fell.

I shopped with Mali as if she were my own daughter. We picked out linens and towels and tablecloths, silverware and sheitels and shoes. We bought her clothes and kitchenware. Anyone who has ever shopped for a kallah knows that it takes hours, going from place to place, trying things on, matching things up. Then there were gown appointments, sheitel appointments, seamstress appointments. All throughout, I treated Mali like she was my own daughter.

When I first started shopping with her, I paid for the purchases, happy to spend the money as a wedding gift for my best friend’s daughter. But I couldn’t pay for everything — and I knew Chevy couldn’t either. So besides running around with the kallah, I was also raising money for her. This wasn’t easy, as I didn’t want Chevy to know this, and I didn’t want to compromise their dignity by reaching out to people who knew them. It was both exhausting and exhilarating.

I tried not to neglect my family during this time. It was important, because my next son was in shidduchim and deserved at least as much of my attention as Mali was getting. For some reason, however, shidduchim were not going as smoothly for him as they had for Aharon. Different names were suggested, but nothing panned out. Sometimes we weren’t interested, sometimes the other side pulled out, and once, Meir himself refused the idea. There was even one name that had been proposed several times by different people. I couldn’t really find any pattern, but for one reason or another, the suggestion seemed to slip away each time before anything could come of it. It was puzzling and frustrating. Sometimes shopping for Mali was a welcome distraction, but sometimes it hurt that I couldn’t seem to get my own son to this point.

Two weeks before the wedding, Chevy’s husband was discharged from rehab. The family threw themselves into lastminute preparations with a surge of joy. I was glad I had been able to help make sure that Mali would start her married life with everything that she needed, especially with confidence and security. And I was so happy for Chevy and for Mali that they were able to have this special time together.

Especially because I’d suddenly become busy with a simcha brewing at home. Incredibly, the shidduch for Meir that had been suggested multiple times had been suggested again… and this time it looked like it would happen.

I know it’s hard to believe, but I didn’t make it to Mali’s wedding. I was actually in another country. At the very moment that Chevy was walking Mali down to the chuppah, we were celebrating the engagement of our son.

It is clear to me that there was a connection between what I had done for Mali and what Hashem did for Meir. Like I said, our lives had always been intertwined. I know I helped Chevy, but I gained so much more than I gave.

A DIFFERENT TRACK

It should have been exciting — choosing a career, becoming an adult, high school past and the future bright ahead. But in the Israeli seminar in my hometown, the choices were very disappointing. A certification in Education was mandatory, and we all had to choose one other subject in addition to teaching. These were not for degrees, but for certifications, which we would earn in the two-year, post–high school programs every Bais Yaakov high school graduate attended, called seminar

My other choices? Special education. Teaching English. Teaching arithmetic. Graphic design. Office management.

That was it.

I did not want to be a teacher. I did not want to take the mandatory education courses. I certainly did not want to do anything remotely related to teaching. Graphic design was a swamped market, with more graduates than jobs. Which led me squarely to office management.

It was far from exciting, but it seemed practical, and it appealed to my organized side, at least. I blinked back tears as I handed in my application, but I knew I had no other choice.

Within days of starting to work, it was clear I’d made a mistake. I was miserable. Between the education courses, which I did not enjoy, and the office management classes, which were boring me to tears, I couldn’t imagine what the next two years would look like. But I’m not a quitter, so I kept at it.

It was only after the chagim, when I realized that I desperately did not want to go back to school, that I realized that I had to make a change.

In the space of a week, I researched other programs, found one that checked all the boxes, and arranged for an interview. I traveled into Yerushalayim to meet with the menahelet. At the end of the interview, she started talking about purchasing uniforms. I looked at her and said, “That’s it? I’m in?”

“Tomorrow morning, bright and early,” she replied with a smile.

And that was that. I was going to be studying medical office management, without the education degree, in a seminar that offered a one-year track, as opposed to the typical two years. There were kodesh classes, as well as speakers, shabbatons and yimei iyun, so I wasn’t sacrificing my seminar experience. And hopefully, my inter-

est in medicine would keep me interested in the course. Worst case scenario, it was just one year, so this was still a better option than the previous program, which would have meant two years.

The program ended up being great. There were parts I didn’t love, but I earned my certification, and medical office management aside, I learned and grew a lot that year — more than I ever would have been able to learn and grow stuck in a program I detested, studying topics that I found incredibly dull.

But most importantly, during that whirlwind week of researching, applying and interviewing, Hashem was setting me on a path to the most fulfilling and rewarding career I could have imagined.

For two years after graduation, I worked in Terem emergency clinics — fast-paced, adrenalin-pumping work that I thrived on. After my oldest was born, I found a job closer to home with shorter hours, working for a very popular pediatrician. I’ve been managing her practice for years now, and with over 2,400 patients a quarter, there’s a lot to manage. My patients’ parents know that I am there for them and that I will do everything in my power to make getting through their child’s illness — acute or chronic — a little easier.

I feel so blessed with my occupation and am so grateful to Hashem that I caught myself, picked myself up, and let Him carry me to where I needed to be.

When you stand at the ocean’s edge and look out into its vast endlessness, and at the rhythmic waves rolling toward the shore, the sea does something to you. It can both impress you with its power and give you a very deep sense of inner peace.

The sea may also frighten you with the possible dangers that lurk within, once man steps off firm, dry land, and into the fathomless water that makes up three-quarters of the Earth’s surface.

For many of us, the ocean remains a favorite place to visit on hot summer days. But what if you couldn’t get home that easily? Worse yet, what if you were stranded at sea?

This is the nightmare turned reality for many unfortunate sailors, fishermen and others whose plans went terribly awry. The majority of them were never heard from again, but every now and then, someone survives to share their tale with the world.

Adrift at Sea

Perhaps the most famous instance of a man surviving a harrowing misadventure at sea is the story of José Salvador Alvarenga. Hailing from Central America, this Salvadoran fisherman along with one crewmate set out from Costa Azul, Mexico, on a fishing trip. It was November 17, 2012, when the pair climbed aboard their small, open boat and left off the coast of Mexico. But eighty miles off the coast, a violent storm hit. Ten-foot waves and winds of up to 70 miles per hour pummeled the vessel and nearly capsized them. Alvarenga and his crewmate, Ezequiel Cordoba, tried desperately to make it back to the safety of port, but they could not succeed.

For days, the storm raged around them. In an effort to keep their boat afloat, the fishermen made the choice to throw much of their equipment and supplies overboard.

After more than five days, when the winds finally died down and the storm ended, the sodden pair found themselves still on their boat and very much alive.

But they were lost at sea. To make matters

A Tzaddik in the Storm

It was 5693 (1933) when the Baba Sali, Rav Yisroel Abuchatzeira, made the journey from his Moroccan hometown to Eretz Yisroel. Transversing the Mediterranean Sea, the Baba Sali sat in his cabin, deep in the belly of the ship, and buried himself in his sefarim. Immersed in the words of the holy Torah, he was unaware of the growing excitement around him. A vicious storm had begun raging, tossing the boat like a child’s toy sailboat. As the Baba Sali readied himself to be mekabel Shabbos, desperate plans were already being made. The captain was shouting instructions over the roar of the wild waves flooding the deck, and the sailors frantically rushed about, readying the lifeboats, life vests and other life-saving equipment. Meanwhile, the fiery sun, obscured by furious clouds, dropped lower as Shabbos approached. Shaking and terrified, the Baba Sali’s attendant knocked on the tzaddik’s door.

“The captain has sent me to tell you to prepare for the worst!” he cried. “The ship is going down, and they are readying the lifeboats!”

Immediately, the Baba Sali withdrew his precious Kiddush cup, which he’d inherited from his grandfather, the Abir Yaakov. He quickly poured wine into the cup and made Kiddush with utmost concentration. With his bewildered and panicked attendant looking on, the Baba Sali proceeded to drink rov kos and then carefully made his way up to the ship’s deck.

The vessel pitched backward and forward in the surging, whirling waves. Over the deafening roar, the tzaddik approached the rail of the boat and flung the remaining wine into the raging ocean.

Before the attendant could even ask Baba Sali about his strange behavior, the storm suddenly went silent, and the waves settled in peace.

The Baba Sali’s explanation was measured and calm: “The Gemara tells us, ‘Sheyarei mitzvah me’akvin es hapuranos.’ The remainder of a mitzvah prevents disaster and misfortune.”

worse, their boat was nearly destroyed, and the motor had been flooded and was no longer working. They had no sails, no oars, no fishing gear and no motor. They were adrift in the endless, desolate Pacific Ocean — the largest and deepest ocean on Earth, which covers more than 60 million square miles.

As their boat drifted aimlessly in the sea, the days stretched into weeks, and the fishermen attempted to protect themselves from the relentless sun with an overturned ice box. They battled starvation and subsisted on raw sea turtles, fish and birds. Sunset followed sunrise, with the inky black sky stretching from horizon to horizon and the dark waves lapping ceaselessly against the sides of the boat. And when it seemed it could get no worse, it did.

After two and a half months, Cordoba died on board, presumably from starvation or from some parasite or pathogen in the raw shark liver the friends had consumed. Now Alvarenga was truly alone in a wet world, where sunset followed sunrise, day after day. He survived on rain water (drinking salty sea water causes death by overwhelming the body with sodium) and by catching and eating various sea creatures. On one occasion, he came across a drifting garbage bag that contained rancid cabbage, carrots and some milk.

Every now and then, Albarenga saw a passing ship. Each time, he frantically attempted to signal for help, but he was never spotted.

The seasons slowly changed, and as each sunrise was followed by yet another sunset, the months passed. After an inconceivable 438 days — fourteen months — Albarenga spotted land. Once the boat drifted close enough to the landmass, the fisherman decided to end his perilous misadventure. With the little strength he had left, Albarenga swam to shore. On January 30, 2014, he reached land — the Marshall Islands, some seven thousand miles away from Mexico.

Although these islands are isolated and sparsely populated, some locals did spot the wild-bearded and half-mad fisherman and came to his rescue. He could hardly speak and was unable to walk, and he was suffering from dehydration, starvation and parasites. But he was alive. And despite the harrowing, traumatic and nearly impossible experience, he was able to share his story with the world — the story of one man who managed to survive over a year alone, lost and adrift at sea.

Naval Architect at Sea

It’s a pity that Steven Callahan didn’t have a Kiddush cup with him when he ran into trouble in the Atlantic Ocean. This New Yorker, who loved sailing ever since he was young, became a professional sailor and a naval architect (one who, among other jobs, designs, constructs and repairs sea vessels).

In 1981, Callahan left Newport, Rhode Island, for a journey across the Atlantic. His vessel of choice? Napoleon Solo, a sailboat he designed and built himself. Unfortunately, during his voyage, something in the water destroyed the bottom of Callahan’s boat. Due to its excellent engineering and watertight compartments, the boat did not sink right away. This allowed the intrepid sailor some time to prepare for the inevitable.

First, Callahan inflated his life raft — and just in time, because shortly thereafter, his boat capsized. All of his emergency equipment was now in the water, with the boat sitting on top of it. Callahan dove into the churning waters over and over again in an attempt to retrieve some supplies, which were sinking fast. He managed to pull from the water a sleeping bag as well as an emergency kit, which included some food, navigation charts, flares and a flashlight. Other valuable items he succeeded in saving included a speargun, which would enable him to fish for food more easily, solar stills used for producing pure drinking water from the salty sea water, and a survival manual called Sea Survival

All alone in his life raft, Callahan tried to make the best of a very dire situation. After his meager food supplies ran out, he survived by eating raw seafood, primarily mahi mahi and triggerfish, and by catching and consuming the occasional bird.

A tiny speck in a small lifeboat, bobbing in the endless waters of the Atlantic Ocean,\ with little to eat and barely a pint of water to drink each day, Steven Callahan had to put up with sharks, punctures in his raft, mental stress, malnutrition and saltwater sores all over his body. But he did not give up. He even made a point to exercise routinely during his days adrift.

After 76 days — over two months — some fisherman off the coast of Marie Galante, Guadeloupe, an island in the Caribbean, spotted the lost sailor. They were able to rescue Callahan and bring him to shore. The man had lost a third of his body weight and was taken straight to the hospital to recover from his ordeal — which he did. And he returned to sailing, too!

Following his experience, Callahan dedicated himself to creating the most efficient, safest and reliable inflatable life boat. What resulted was a multifunction self-rescue dinghy, designed for use as a lifeboat, called The Clam. The lifeboat is a kind of FRIB — a foldable rigid inflatable boat. So just in case you know anyone who has “surviving being lost at sea” on their bucket list, you can advise them to take a FRIB along. Apparently, it’s their best bet.

Storms and Sharks

The date is December 23, 2008. The location is the choppy, rough waters off the coast of Thailand. Twenty fishermen and crew members are aboard a small fishing boat, and then — disaster. The boat simply breaks apart.

Most of the unfortunate fishermen were washed overboard and swept away in the angry waves, never to be seen or heard from again. The boat itself sank quickly and was never found. But two young men from Burma, desperate to survive, located the large ice box used to store caught fish on fishing expeditions and managed to climb inside.

Any fish that landed in the icebox were a blessing and were eaten raw. There was no safe way to reach out of the icebox to try catch other fish, and the visceral fear of the shark-infested waters didn’t help, either.

It wasn’t until 25 days later, on January 17, that a customs search plane happened to spot the iceboxcum-lifeboat bobbing on the waves and came to their rescue. The young men were dehydrated, suffering from starvation and severe sunburn. But they were together, alive, and they were going home.

The men, 22 and 24 years old respectively, clung to each other in sheer terror as they cowered, drenched and desperate, in their icebox. Massive waves and fiftyknot (58 mph) winds tossed the icebox up and down like a piece of confetti, over and over again, as Cyclone Charlotte battered the area. Amazingly, however, the box did not capsize and remained upright.

There’s so much to be grateful for when we come home from a seaside visit and enter our safe, comfortable homes. We have plentiful, varied food, clean drinking water, hot water for invigorating showers, and comfortable, warm beds to sleep in at night.

Next time we feel lost, confused or adrift, let’s think of these unfortunate souls and be grateful that we are, at the very least, secure on firm, dry land.

EntEring purim with a wholE new team

Spending money is everywhere. It’s in the magazines we read, conversations at the bus stop, and of course, in the stores we shop in. It’s so easy to swipe a credit card and make the perfect simcha, buy the latest new gadget or remodel your kitchen. It takes nothing to plan and book a ten-day vacation and put the bill on the card to be dealt with later. In just a blink, you can get into debt without even realizing it’s happening.

Staying out of debt has become a way of life for me over the last two years. I do that by staying in my lane. It’s my mantra. I know our budget, I know our needs, and I know our wants and dreams. When I’m skimming the magazines or when I’m out shopping, I’m a smart consumer.

If my kids are wearing last year’s clothes, it’s because we’ve decided to use the money elsewhere.

That pinch of jealousy and frustration, and the eternal, unanswerable question — how does everyone else do it? — hardly comes up for me anymore, and when it does, I know I’ve stepped out of my own lane.

The many months of consistent responsibility has slowly changed us. We now walk with our backs straight. Our tuition and groceries are paid off. We always have cash on hand for the cleaning lady. And when there’s another tzedakah request, we are glad we can donate, even if it’s a relatively small amount.

gifts, it no longer causes a flood of money anxiety. And it’s not because we’re rich now and can spend freely. Rather, it’s because we know what’s going on with our money, and we always make sure to leave some wiggle room for surprises.

I also see how our choices spill over to our kids. I see how they put away their money after a Chanukah party, think about what they want to buy, and in general, have a basic understanding of the value of money and that money needs to be accounted for. (And of course, I schep so much nachas when they use their own money to buy each other small birthday gifts.) I’m confident talking to them about money, because they know I walk the talk.

My son called home this week, asking if we’d sponsor the siyum he and his friends are making in yeshiva. After hearing the amount of money they intended to spend, I told him I’d be more than thrilled to pay for half of it, and that I was so proud of him.

I hung up the phone feeling so grateful. I knew we could do it. And now my son knows he can ask; he feels our confidence and ease around our money. We act responsibly, and in turn, our kids trust our decisions.

There’s so much joy in buying something we’ve saved up for. I remember when we finally got rid of our old couch and bought a new one we found on sale in the furniture store. We were all so excited; we felt so lucky. It was the same when we went on a two-day trip with the whole family. We don’t take the small or big things for granted.

There are still challenges that come up. A budget is like a diet; it’s a commitment again every morning. But like a diet, it gets easier as you form new habits, and eventually a new you. That new you will have to keep facing down challenges: broken appliances, unexpected days off from work, the kids’ constant refrain that “everyone has it.” But facing down challenging is what makes this a wholesome journey, and what proves that it works if you work it. Some months we do better than others, but overall, this journey has transformed us and our lives.

No, we haven’t become rich. We aren’t even completely debt-free yet. But we’ve gained so much from this journey — serenity, empowerment, discipline and joy. And that’s priceless. THE

This February, the largest and most luxurious sportfishing yacht ever built, the ROYAL HUISMAN’S PROJECT 406, was launched in Amsterdam. At 170 feet long, it has six decks and is outfitted for high-end sportfishing.

At 472 feet, the Atlantic Dawn, renamed ANNELIES ILENA, is the world’s largest and most technologically advanced fishing trawler. A trawler is a fishing vessel that drags a trawl — or conical net — through the water behind it, trapping fish.

Over the past few years, about 50 major ships sank annually. Many of them were fishing boats.

On June 14, 2023, a fishing boat named the Adriana capsized deep into the Mediterranean Sea, taking the lives of 600 of its 750 passengers onboard. It seems the shipwreck happened when another vessel tried to tow the old ship.

On December 31, 2019, the FV Scandies Rose, a crab fishing vessel, sank in Alaska after it began accumulating ice on its starboard side. Two survivors were found in the water hours after the ship went down, but the five remaining crewmembers were never found.

Tarai-bunes, or tub-turned-boats, are native to Japan. Traditionally made of cedar wood and bamboo, they’re tailored to enable fishing in narrow coves. Fun fact: Taraibunes were originally used as washtubs!

The Dhow is a boat invented either by Arabs or Indians, primarily for the fishing and pearling industries. It was also used for trading, carrying slaves, fruit and other goods along the coasts of India, Pakistan, and East Africa. Interestingly, the planks of early dhows were stitched together by rope or coconut fiber instead of being nailed together. Modern models of the dhow are still used today.
