D’CLUTTERING Q&A
I’d love to get an explanation.
Regarding your series in The Monsey View, which I’m enjoying immensely, I’ve got two questions: 1. What are dividers for drawers? How do they look? 2. The hook you displayed for belts.... Where can I purchase it?
SARA GOLDSTEIN RESPONDS:
I’m glad you’re enjoying the articles. Here’s a picture of the dividers. There are many different options available. (These are from Ikea.) The hooks are from The Container Store. Have fun d’cluttering!

IS IT MSG OR NOT?
I love the health column! I have a question for Esty: You listed several chemicals that are code-words for hidden MSG. I always buy the chips that claim “no MSG,” but they may have “yeast extract” or some other product from your “no-no” list. Can they legally claim not to contain MSG while using other excitotoxins that are made with MSG? Is the label simply false?

I have a question on Esty Weiss’s health column She was writing about MSG, and she mentioned a few things that are like MSG. I just noticed on something I bought that it says “no MSG,” yet it says in the ingredients that it contains “oilized yeast.” I am wondering what that means. Is it MSG or not, I would appreciate a response.
6:41 8:23
6:37 8:04
6:48 8:20
ESTY WEISS RESPONDS:
Thanks, I’m happy you’re enjoying my column. According to the law, a manufacturer can write “no MSG” even though a product does contain other forms, like yeast extract, which is not pure MSG, but does have glutamate in it, which is a main ingredient in MSG. This is considered legally okay. Unfortunately, labels are very tricky and you might say that, in a sense, they can give consumers false information. That’s one reason I highly suggest buying organic products, because the labeling is much stricter.

Nostalgia in the Nosh Aisle truly brought back memories of a time gone by. How Kosher candy has evolved into an entire industry! It brought to mind a story which I once came across how Kosher candy all began, and I’d like to share it, in the hope that it will perhaps inspire others to limit the candy consumption of our children. There was a man in Bialostok who learned the candy trade, and approached his rav to ask him if he was willing to give a hashgacha on a candy. The rav conferred with his beis din, who thought that it was a very nice idea. Sometimes you might want to reward a child, or to buy a treat for Shabbos. They approved the plan and agreed to give a hechsher. Some time later, the man approached his rav again, saying that he learned how to make another sweet, and would the rav be willing to give a hechsher on that product also? Once again, he consulted his beis din, who decided that yes, it was nice to give a choice to a child, and they agreed to give a hechsher. When the confectioner came with a third candy, the beis din paskened differently. They said, “One is important, two is nice —
Inbox Talk of Town
but three is already extra,” and they did not agree to give a hechsher on a third candy. Perhaps this message can give us some perspective when we are faced with the kind of “Nosh aisles” there are today. R.S.
MY NOSTALGIC NOSH
I loved your candy nostalgia article, though I was disappointed that no one mentioned Sugar Daddies, or Turkish Taffy (which is now available with a heimishe hechsher, though it’s not exactly the same as I remember.) I’ll also use your “bestsellers” as a guide when I shop to fill the bags I give my einiklach on Purim. P. Samuels
HEALTHY LIFESTYLE TIP
To my fellow community members who enjoy reading about healthier options and implementing what they can: I came across a good palm oil with good hechsherim, which is kosher l’Pesach as well, from the company Beganim. Good Luck and keep healthy! J.G.
ADORABLE, BUT NOT MISHLOACH MANOS
Our whole family enjoys The Monsey View

and everyone has a chance to look through it from cover to cover each week. We especially enjoy the “Mommy, I’m Bored” section, and the first week with the cars and the tape was really popular in our home. We didn’t end up sending you pictures, but we did have it going down our entire long hallway for over a week. I wanted to comment on “Mommy, I’m Bored” in Issue 41. Mishloach manos needs to be edible food, and putting in popcorn seeds and spices is cute, but it’s not mishloach manos.
EDITOR’S NOTE:

RE: AN OPPORTUNITY, MISUSED (ISSUE #41)
I was so upset to read how one Yid was not able to be dan l’kaf zchus a fellow sister. Why does Shaindy K. only see the sweet white hair of the woman? Why doesn’t she see her sweet Jewish sister — mother perhaps of five to ten sweet children that has finally finished putting her order together (maybe with a baby in her hand), rushing home to make a bus that she might be running late for, and every minute counts? Perhaps she has to make it to a playgroup or babysitter by a specific time? Maybe there are another dozen reasons for her not being able to let this “sweet white-haired woman” go before her? Maybe she has a medical condition (which I myself once had in a grocery when my sugar dropped very low!)?
The “sweet white-haired woman with her single cream cheese” could have nicely been shown the express lane where people don’t stand with loaded wagons! Of course, we all know the tremendous z’chus of making a kiddush Hashem, even when it means giving up our time, but I believe that this Yiddishe Mommy would have, if she could have! I am shocked at Shaindy for judging this mommy when she doesn’t even know what the story was. We should definitely try to say it in a nice way when we are unable to help someone out — and explain when possible — but basic mentchlichkeit and responsibility extend to giving others the benefit of the doubt. Raizel was making a Bar Mitzvah seudah and had to choose a hall. Since she was on a limited budget, she booked a simple hall that was located in a school. A few weeks later, she received a call from the caterer, who informed her that the school needed to use the hall on that night and would pay for her to use a different, fancier hall. However, if she specifically wanted to have it there, then the school would make their event on a different night. The Bar Mitzvah bachur was very excited to have his seudah in the fancier hall. Raizel, therefore, agreed to the change. A week later, Raizel received a call from a lady named Mrs. Schwartz asking if she would consider making the Bar Mitzvah in different hall — one that was even more expensive than the hall they’d transferred to — and she would pay the difference, because the caterer Mrs. Schwartz was using would only work in the hall that Raizel had booked. Raizel’s son was just as happy to have his seudah in the third hall, and the caterer said this newer hall was easier for him to use. On her limited budget, Raizel would never have thought she would be making a Bar Mitzvah in the hall she made it in, yet Hashem has His ways!

Battle of the Barrels
Herzog Variations Oak is a special wine series that journeys beyond the variations of California wine country, and into a Battle of the Barrels. We start with North Coast Cabernet Sauvignon–grown in well drained, red volcanic soil. The wines are then separated into two sets of barrels; one in 100% new American oak, and one in 100% new French oak. Both wines are then carefully aged for 9 months, bringing out rich nuances in the flavor, profile and texture. The results are two complex, layered and richly textured wines. So who will win this battle? The decision is yours!

How to Have a Real “Simchas Purim” It’s about a week before Purim, and I’m sure that you are experiencing the hustle and the bustle of the holiday wherever you go. For most kids, their focus is on the costumes and accessories, with some of them changing their minds every hour about what they would like to be dressed as. For mothers, the time is probably spent matching every colored ribbon and theme to the mishloach manos. And for me, it’s a lot about the horrendous aisles of junk food I see everywhere I go! I don’t mind all the colorful nosh as long as it’s used for its intended purpose – color! If you are happy or will make someone else happy by sending a nice mishloach manos, and if you want to accessorize with different colored candies and crystals, that’s fine, as long as they’re used decoratively. My concern, as you probably know by now, is how much of it Yiddishe kinder will be consuming. A few ounces of the stuff? A few pounds? Or will they treat themselves to gallons of junk? A little something here and there is perfectly okay, but where do we draw the line? A nice few years back, my Purim celebration looked a little something like this: As the first batch of mishloach manos arrived some of my family opened it up and devoured it. Who was the biggest culprit? I was! As the sugar started kicking in, I craved more and more, and felt like I wanted to go back to sleep. As the day went on, and I tried to stay centered and calm, though some cranky, crying kinderlach were experiencing sugar blues too. I kept on sampling everything and feeling worse by the minute. By 4 o’clock in the afternoon, I’d fallen asleep practically standing up, and I felt tipsy despite the fact I hadn’t drunk wine! I remember pledging that I’d never touch a piece of sugary garbage again! Too bad that it only lasted until the next binge...

It wasn’t until I became aware that I could enjoy Purim by eating better, that I began to really enjoy those special occasions.
It took me almost a week to recuperate from the sugar rush! It was a true nightmare, but I told myself that it wasn’t a big deal. I mean, it was only one day! But that wasn’t the problem. My problem was that I really didn’t enjoy the way I felt. I was pretty miserable, to be honest, and that went against the very essence of Purim. Year after year, I went around thinking that splurging once a year wasn’t the end of the world. And it wasn’t. But it was never only once a year because there was always something going on: a chasunah, bar mitzvah, sheva brachos, voch nacht, bris, Chanukah parties, welcome and goodbye parties, Shabbos, yom tov, rosh chodesh, and other special days. It wasn’t until I became aware that I could enjoy Purim (or any other occasion) by eating better while still enjoying some delicious foods, that I began to really enjoy those special occasions. It took some planning and hard work, but I can honestly say that the way I enjoyed the last few Purims was a real simchas yom tov! The way I function is on a total different level when I fuel my body with nourishing foods. My energy level goes up, my mind feels clear, I’m much calmer, and of course, my weight stays down.
PRACTICAL TIPS FOR A TRUE SIMCHAS PURIM: • Drink 2-3 cups of water first thing in the morning. • Avoid carb-laden,

starchy, sugary foods on an empty stomach! (This is crucial.) • If you’re craving the sweet stuff, only indulge with some form of protein like fish, chicken, meat, or eggs. • Munch on veggies and some dip. Sliced carrots, cucumbers, peppers, etc. • Almonds are great to have around if you get into snacking mode. • Take a few deep breaths, smile, focus on being calm, and have a Simchas Purim!
PURIM FOR YOUR KIDS: Let’s face it – when it comes to Purim, kids see it as the more
sugar, the better! Here are some helpful tips to help manage that: • Try to start them off with a healthy breakfast because they shouldn’t load themselves up with sugar on an empty stomach. Protein is always a great option. Kids usually enjoy eating eggs, which are certainly better than a carton of sugary yogurt. • Let them collect their Purim nosh and make it a competition. The winner is the one who still has the most nosh after Purim! • You can either buy the nosh from your children, depending on how old they are, or let them trade in the
nosh for prizes. • Give your children an allotted amount of nosh they can have for the day (excluding what they receive from teachers’ and rebbes’ mishloach manos). For example: 8 colored junky nosh, 5 mezonos, and 6 chip-type treats. Have a freilichen, listige, simchas yom tov! We’ll see you back here soon with the erev Pesach and Pesach articles.

Parshas
Zachor (Parshas Vayikra) By Rebbetzin Malka Teitelbaum
“Duvid, did you hear? Avi’s son Yitzy still isn’t in yeshiva.” “Seriously? We have to help him. Who do you know who could help?” “Help? Why should we help? It’s one thing to break rules, but they made an open mockery of our community’s standards for years. They deserve what they got.” “Zevi, everything you’re saying is true, but we still must help. Yitzy and his family are part of Klal Yisrael. We have to find a yeshiva that would be appropriate for him.” “Are you for real? They did this to themselves. I don’t see why I should get involved.” “True, they did cut themselves off, in a sense, but that doesn’t give us the right to cut them off. I know somebody at Yeshiva Ezer L’Bonim who might be able to help. I think this yeshiva could be a good fit for Yitzy. I’ll give them a call and see what I can do.” “You know something, Duvid? What you’re telling me now is exactly the lesson we learn from parshas Zachor. I’ll see what I can do to help as well.” This week is Shabbos Zachor, when we fulfill the mitzvah to remember what Amalek did to us by reading from a sefer Torah the posukim: “Zachor es asher asah lecha Amalek... – You
60 / THE MONS E Y V IE W
shall remember what Amalek did to you on the way when you went out of Mitzrayim, how he happened upon you on the way and cut off the stragglers at your rear...” (Devarim 25:17-18) Looking closer at these posukim, who exactly did Amalek attack? The stragglers who were trailing behind. Rashi explains that these stragglers were people who had sinned and were subsequently
Moshe understood that all of Klal Yisrael must remain united at heart, and that every Yid is worth saving. expelled by the Ananei HaKavod. The majority of Klal Yisrael was safe inside the Ananei HaKovod, unable to be harmed by Amalek. It is easy to imagine that many of them might have hesitated to step out of their safe haven to help the stragglers on the outside. There must have been plenty of excuses available as to why it would not be necessary to endanger themselves to help. “They did it to themselves.” “Hashem Himself pushed them
out there because of their own sins.” “They’re from the eiruv rav anyway – they’re not really part of our people.” “What do I have with these troublemakers? Why should I risk my neck for theirs?” That is not what happened. Moshe Rabbeinu, in his greatness as our leader, dispatched an army headed by Yehoshua himself to wage war against Amalek and save the stragglers. Moshe understood that all of Klal Yisrael must remain united at heart, and that every Yid is worth saving. Amalek’s only hope of success in attacking the stragglers would have been if Klal Yisrael were not unified – if they had viewed those on the outside as somehow disposable. Indeed, the Torah tells us in Parshas Beshalach that the attack took place at “Refidim.” The Kli Yakar observes that the word “Refidim” contains the letters of the shoresh of the word “pirud,” which means separation. When the Torah tells us that Amalek attacked us at “Refidim,” it is a hint to the fact that they attacked us at our weakest point – disunity. Returning to the above posukim in Zachor, Rashi brings a Midrash (Tanchuma 8) that the mitzvah to remember what Amalek did follows directly after the mitzvah of being honest
G
with measurements, to warn us that if we use fraudulent measurements, then we open ourselves to attack. The Sassover Rebbe of Monsey, shlita, ties this into the importance of achdus in defeating Amalek. He says that if we start to play around with measuring who is worth more and who is worth less, then we are opening the door to allow Amalek in to attack us. Perhaps this is because any measure we might use to compare one person to another is fraudulent by
default, for only HaKadosh Baruch Hu Himself could make such a comparison with accuracy. If we want to do as much as we can to fulfill the mitzvah to destroy Amalek, then we must work on achdus. There are many reasons why a person might find himself “outside the camp” of Klal Yisrael. Some people are not accepted because they have rebelled, while others struggle to be accepted through no fault of their own, but because of differences in their family background. Whatever the reason might be, we cannot cut them off. We must be willing to fight and sacrifice to help them. If not, we are not only handing them over to Amalek, but ourselves as well.

MULTI-PLY COSTUME “Ice cream!” “Toothpaste?” “Chocolate.” “Lego!” My children and I were brainstorming, slowly adding ideas to the list. It was a brutally cold motzei Shabbos, and it felt as if winter would never end. The fierce wind, though, did not dampen our spirits or disturb our mood; we were excited to start planning Purim costumes. This was to be our first attempt at coming up with an original costume. The plan was to start with a list of possible ideas, many of them objects found within the house, and have a weekly planning session while narrowing down the list and figuring out the logistics of
nal decision. Her response was simple: “Mommy I am going to be a tissue box on Purim!” Week after week, we reviewed the list, adding some more ideas, and every week Chavie’s reaction was the same. I tried suggesting other ideas, but she kept up her insistence, constantly repeating, “I am going to be a tissue box!“ I realized that although she may have sounded stubborn, she had a dream of dressing up as a tissue box on Purim, and desperately wanted that dream to become a reality. Chavie had a clear vision of what she wanted, and was determined to do anything to reach her goal. I sat down to discuss it with her, explaining why I thought the tissue box would not be that exciting - while she explained to me how cute and original it would be, with the tissues coming out of the front of a cardboard box that we would decorate. She had it all planned out. She was unwavering, and I yielded. We started planning and thinking and dreaming. We began with a cardboard egg box, moved on to a net hamper, went back to a cardboard box, and finally settled on foambacked poster boards. A few weeks before Purim, we started the measuring and cutting, followed by more measuring and more cutting. We had four rectangles that, together, would create the top, bottom, and two sides of the tissue box. We then calculated where to make holes on the sides for her hands, adding two
“Mommy I am going to be a tissue box on Purim!” how to create the masterpiece. My daughter, Chavie, was adding anything within view from her seat at the kitchen table to the list. “A clock... a pen... a notebook….a tissue box!” She became all excited and exclaimed, “I am going to be a tissue box; there is nothing else I want to be.” As the creative director (who also happens to play the role of costume maker), I was a bit mortified. I strongly believed that a tissue box would not be on the list of really cute original costumes, and that Chavie would be disappointed with the final outcome. I explained to her that since there was still plenty of time before Purim, we’d re-think the list, and in a few weeks narrow it down to a fi-

Can I create a clear vision of the person I want to be, and then get there through strong will? small panels for the top, leaving room to get it over her head. We now had our raw tissue box, and a glowing Chavie. We then went on to the many choices of how to turn this white box into her dream costume. With the aid of gift wrap, two sided tape, contrasting solid gift wrap, and packing tape, we ended up with a beautiful tissue box. All that was missing were the tissues. The back of the box was decorated to resemble a box of Kleenex tissues, using the name Purimex instead. As a precaution against rain, the entire box was covered in clear cellophane. Finally two sheets of tissue paper were fit through the slit on the front of the box. The tissue box was complete! And it was an original masterpiece that was beyond any expectations I’d had. My girl was radiant! Seeing Chavie’s excited face as she tried it on, I couldn’t help but be amazed by her persistence and will. She knew this was what she wanted, she was determined, and the results were magnificent. It got me thinking as to where I would be, in many different areas of my life, if I lived with her persistence and determination? If I utilized just some of her willpower to improve my concentration in tefillah, would I not be davening very differently? How would my avodas Hashem, guarding my speech,

Purim came in with the falling snow, but no amount of snow or cold could dampen Chavie’s excitement, as she paraded the streets in her tissue box getup. Her costume looked great and was in perfect condition at the end of the day. The day after Purim came the decision of what to do with this oversized tissue box. Do we take it apart, or keep it? Due to space limitations, I really wanted to take it apart, but I wasn’t ready part with it, so the tissue

and effective parenting be transformed, if only I was just as determined to change, as she was insistent to be a tissue box? Maybe I could reach levels I never thought I could attain? Perhaps aspiring to greater heights is not beyond my ability. Strong will and a clear vision of what she wanted to be, helped her dream become a reality. And although in the scheme of her life, the making of one Purim costume is not a huge event — at that moment it was of great importance to her. And the lesson learned, I could apply to areas of value in my own life. Can I do the same? Can I create a clear vision of the person I want to be, and then get there

Recap: The new tenants move in; a multifamily conglomeration of Spanish speakers. They party, shoot baskets, and sing all night until Sara thinks she might lose her mind. Just when she thought she’s had enough, one of the woman from next door offers to be Sara’s cleaning lady. In response, Sara gets better locks for her doors.
It couldn’t have gotten worse. The parties were endless and public. Tehilla had a special fascination with the next-door neighbors, and while the other children understood the situation, Tehilla could not. If the weather didn’t allow for outdoor parties, then the glow from inside their homes, bright and colorful, painted the outside with beams of blue light. Sara found Tehilla, one night when she thought the girl was sleeping, glued to the window, her tongue sticking out slightly, her eyes glazed with fascination. It was a singing night, and because Sara thought she could identify most of the neighboring voices by this time, she had to surmise that they’d either invited their cousins from around town or worse, added more housemates to the basement and upstairs laundry room. She had once heard that South Americans lived this way. Friendly and family-minded, they rented these old houses and agreed to the killing fee landlords dared ask. To cover his costs and even profit, the one legal tenant invited his kith and kin for a few hundred dollars a bed, and pushed them into all corners of the house. It wasn’t an exaggeration, Sara now understood wearily. She bought frosted contact paper and covered all of her windows. It made her feel more secure in her own home, like prying eyes wouldn’t infiltrate. It also calmed her nerves about her children and the parties. It was like she had her fortress around her, and she could focus on not even inhaling so much as two feet from her house, where the fumes of all sorts of strange cooking and living permeated. One day, Tehilla called to the dog in the neighboring yard. She imitated its bark, the way it squatted and lunged its neck every time it yowled. The dog got excited, wagging its small, ruffled tail, and bounded over to lick her skirt. Tehilla, scared, ran to the house, but missed the first step, falling flat on her face and cutting open her chin. By the time Sara flicked off the flame under the frying pan and rushed down the

stairs to see why Tehilla was screeching, there was a pool of blood that scared even her. “It’s going to be okay,” she said, helplessly. The dog panted and ran back and forth near the stairs. Sara was weak and scared. She patted Tehilla’s matted hair. “I’m calling Hatzalah. Hold tight.” She ran upstairs to fetch the cordless. “Just come. You’ll find us. Herrick drive. In the front yard. Number 38. Come fast. Please.” She knelt over her daughter, who was growing less insistent, her cries growing weaker. “No,” she prayed. “Let her cry. Let her live.” The sirens were heard faster than expected, but one of the Hatzolah members who showed up was Yaakov Kasten. “Go away.” She picked up a pebble and tossed it in the direction of the dog, who pounced away. “It’s nothing,” a young man with a fierce black beard told her. “Look. She’ll need a bunch of stitches, it’s a pretty jagged cut, but the blood makes it look worse than it is. We’ll check her for the fall, but she should be fine.” Tehilla was lifted into the ambulance and Sara followed close
But then she looked out the window to see Yaakov Kasten close the door and lock both new locks. behind. Only once she had climbed in, holding her hysterical child down with a loving grip, did she realize that she’d left the door open, and the schnitzel submerged in a pot full of cooling oil. But then she looked out the window to see Yaakov Kasten close the door and lock both new locks. Tehilla was fine, but her trauma extended far beyond getting her face neatly stitched up. She was now terrified to go into the yard. After telling her story to every listening ear, and reveling in the attention she got, even when she did not omit even a single detail, she still considered herself a patient. The days raced like a speeded-up conveyor belt under her feet, and soon she found that it was almost bein hazmanim and she still hadn’t gotten to the bottom of what was going on with Chaim Elazar — had never found the window of time, between work, family, and the fatigue that settled on her bones every night when the neighbors lifeblood started, to really talk to him. Maybe he was also avoiding her; who knew?

With only weeks to Pesach, she noticed how each morning, the women from the house next door would walk to the corners. They’d sling a purse over their outfits and head out toward the homes throughout town, to clean. Her mother’s cleaning lady Elena, on whom she relied every Thursday night, refused to make the trek this Erev Pesach. Her back, she claimed, but Sara knew that she still came to her mother and other middle-aged women whose idea of Pesach cleaning meant ironing bed sheets and lint dusting cupboards. She briefly considered asking her neighbors to do it but was too disgusted to do so and she doubted they were even available, having been grabbed up by other, desperate women. Also, what if they found out exactly where she kept what? Two days before Pesach, Sara flooded her bed with tears. Her crying spell reminded her of her younger years, something akin to the despair she felt when she’d scraped

That her neighbors were bothering her? That her son was the best boy in yeshivah but that something, something nobody could pinpoint, was wrong? That fewer people had started shopping in her basement store, perhaps because of those modern, lightening manip-

her knees and her mother was away at work for the next two hours. She was overwhelmed. The kitchen had yet to be kashered. Her shoulders were sore. She had worked so, so hard. The front yard was littered with Costco-sized bags of Doritos and Mountain Dew, and that old couch the neighbors had set on the curb, but which nobody picked up. And the music, silent for some weeks in the dead of winter now, had started up again. She couldn’t do this anymore. Then, just like that, all was quiet. When the first Seder night arrived, and for the remainder of Chol Hamoed, the sun peeked out behind the shingles of neighboring houses, but no people. There was dew on the grass and weeds next door, but to Sara, the world whispered, “…and I will save you.”

BREADED NILE PERCH
Nile perch is a white fish similar to flounder, but with a thicker flesh. You can try this recipe with flounder or tilapia as well. I love today’s fish trends, with all the different blends and seasonings. But nevertheless, I still miss that good breaded and fried piece of fish. In this recipe, I merged the new and the old, creating this winning delicacy.
1 oz. mustard 1 oz. honey 2 cloves minced garlic 1 T. vinegar 1. Mix ingredients 2. Rub marinade generously onto both sides of fish slices. 3. Marinate in the fridge for up to one hour.
SEASO NED CHEF
Double the marinade for a delicious dipping sauce.
Flour Eggs Bread Crumbs (I use finely ground leftover challah. Homemade challah crumbs give unsurpassed flavor and crunch to any breaded product.) 1. Dredge marinated fish in flour, eggs, and then bread crumbs. 2. In a heated, well greased skillet, fry on high heat for approximately 3-5 minutes on each side. Fish should be white and flaky inside.

MARINATED CRANBERRY SALMON Thanks to a dear friend, L.R. Steinberg, for sharing this recipe. This fish is unique in that it is so sophisticated, belying its simple preparation.
Marinated fish lasts up to two weeks in the fridge if stored properly, making it a perfect dish for the Purim seudah, especially if you don’t know how many guests to expect. Make this at beginning of the week, and you won’t have to worry about squeezing in the Shabbos cooking.
8 slices salmon fillet ¼ cup freshly squeezed lemon juice ¼ cup vinegar ¾ cup sugar
½ cup water 2 tsp. kosher salt 4 bay leaves ¼ cup craisins
1. In a 2-quart saucepan, bring ingredients to a boil and cook until sugar is dissolved. 2. Place fish in a baking pan. Pour marinade over fish. Bake covered at 350° for 45 minutes.

1 roll gefilte fish ¼ cup mayonaise
1 ½ T. apricot jam Corn flake crumbs
1. Semi-defrost fish. 2. Preheat oven to 350°. 3. Mix mayonnaise with jam. Spread mixture onto each slice, covering all sides. 4. Dip into corn flake crumbs. 5. Bake for 25 minutes. Fish should take on a golden hue and be slightly puffed This can be served at room temperature.
The mix of these flavors give off a delicious aroma during baking, beckoning kids to the supper table.

Something fishy is wafting over here from the Food and Family pages. With “Mazal Adar Dagim” on her mind, Leah’s cooked up something special for your Purim seudah. But how well do you really know that scaly creature that’s found anywhere from your aquarium to cooked inside your fish sticks? Let’s take the plunge into the deep end and see what makes fish so fascinating!
FISHY FACTS •
Zaidy’s got competition! The oldest (scientifically documented) fish still living is an Australian Lungfish, at 65 years old. What that fish doesn’t know, however, is that he’s a newborn compared to the Leviyasan!
•
Fish have their own language. They can moan, hiss, shriek, and wail in order to communicate with other fish. They do not, however, have vocal chords. They make those sounds by rattling their bones or vibrating their muscles.
•
Did you know that fish can drown? Yup. Ironically, fish live off of oxygen just like us. The difference is that their bodies are able to extract oxygen from the water they live in, whereas we can’t. If the oxygen content of the water is too low, fish will die. Some fish filter the water they breathe by constantly moving. If they stop swimming, the water filter stops and the fish will drown.
•
Here’s another little something I bet you didn’t know: Fish drink. Not alcohol, silly! Water. Freshwater fish have to drink less than saltwater fish, because salt is very dehydrating. If saltwater fish don’t drink frequently, the salt would dry them right up, like a wrinkled old prune!
•
How many fish can you identify? I know of tuna, gefilte, and salmon. For fish aficionados of the world, you’ll never get bored when it comes to these creatures. There are over 30,000 known species of fish around the world. Enough kosher ones I’m sure, to keep you busy learning (and tasting) for years!
•
The world’s fastest fish is the Sailfish. It can travel as fast as a car on a highway. The slowest? The Dwarf Seahorse. It swims so slowly that a trip of five feet can take an hour.
•
The “Scariest Fish Award” goes to several scaly scaries. Firstly, we’ll congratulate the Fangtooth for winning a spot. Although he’s only a few inches long, his teeth are about the same size as a human’s! And they are sharp. Tying for the winning spot is the Piranha from Brazil. It has razor-like teeth and doesn’t even shy away from attacking horses! Woe to the wading foot that steps into its watery path! In seconds, a Piranha school can strip the flesh from a living being. The Anglerfish is pretty nasty too. Definitely wouldn’t want to meet one of these guys in a dark alley. Good thing they can’t leave the water! Ha!
•
Not everything that looks like it belongs in the fish family actually does. Whales and dolphins are actually not fish, though sharks are. Whales and dolphins are mammals, and have to come to the surface of the water in order to breathe.
•
Now, this makes perfect sense: Sharks are the only fish to have eyelids. They can afford to take a nap when tired. After all, It’s not like a guppy might just swim up while they’re sleeping and devour them in one shot!
•
Here’s yet another reason to avoid makeup: Most lipstick contains fish scales. The average lipstick-wearing woman consumes about four pounds of fish scales...er, lipstick in her lifetime. Yum!
By Ruchy Reese
FISHY FOODS
Hungry? Let’s talk fish as food. •
You know those little cans of tuna you enjoy for lunch? That contains only a portion of the actual fish. The Atlantic Bluefin Tuna weighs over 800 pounds! Think you can eat that much?
•
Got a taste for danger? In Japan, people like to defy death by eating the Fugu fish. This fish contains a deadly poison called tetrodotoxin that can only be removed by specially trained chefs. In olden times a chef was forced to share the fate of his client if the poison hadn’t been properly removed…
•
Don’t like fish? Well, you better learn to like it! Fish is one of the healthiest foods out there (as long as you don’t have a fish allergy!), said to help prevent heart disease, reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s, improve skin, hair, and brain development, ease depression, and provide a great dose of vitamin D.
FISHY FUN If your idea of fun is to sit in the hot sun while holding onto a fishing rod and praying that the fish will decide to bite, well then, you’re not alone. For some reason beyond me, fishing is a multi-billion dollar hobby. If one day you happen to get bored with the standard routine, try out some of these fishing methods: •
Net fishing. Ever saw a picture of grizzly bear trying to scoop up fish in the middle of the river? You can look just like him! Grab a net and start swinging! A bear costume would complete the look.
•
For even more fun, try hand fishing, also called “Trout Tickling” over in England. This is the style where you lunge your body at the passing fish, hoping that one of them will end up in your hands. Most likely however, all that you’ll achieve is to become wet and look like a fool… • Spear fishing/bow fishing is rather cruel in my opinion, involving use of mechanical weapons to impale the fish you’d like to catch. • By far, the most fun however, is noodling. This special method involves sticking your hand down a catfish hole. If all goes as planned, the catfish will assume that your fingers are big, fat worms and sink his teeth in. Eh, who needs so many fingers anyways? • If you really enjoy to spend time with scaly creatures, may I recommend training your pet fish instead? It’s more exciting and easier on the fingers, that’s for sure! In order to get your little fishy to flip-flop around the tank on demand, all you need is a lot of patience, a reward (for him, not you), and low expectations. Your fish will never assist you in Search and Rescue. Your fish will not become a doctor. He may however, learn to swim through a loop or balance a ball on his nose. Just keep rewarding him whenever he does what you want him to do!

Use these tips to survive the most overwhelming day of the year! Purim Survival Tips For Parents
Can you believe it? Purim is here, yet again. Yippee. I mean, Yippee! If you’re like me, you’ve had your share of Purim pitfalls and shudder when you recall your first few years of making mishloach manos. The last couple of years, however, I’ve toned down my expectations and upped the fun factor, thereby mastering the art of becoming a Purim Pro! Nowadays, my crew is able to really have a Simchas Purim! Allow me to share with you some of my favorite tried-andtrue tips to make the day go smoother for all.
1.
Get a normal night of sleep! Do not, I repeat do not, under any circumstances stay up all night after Megillah laining to finish baking your mishloach manos and wrap them all in cellophane. By the time you’ll finish at 7 am you’ll be desperate for a bed. (Trust me, I know!) Your well-rested husband and kids, however, will be desperate to crank up the music and start the fun!

2.
Plan to visit only the people that you truly have to/want to. The halacha does not require you to send to every rebbe/teacher that you and your husband have had since infancy, no matter how great they were. If you try to be in too many places at once, you’ll just run yourself haggard and suck all enjoyment out of the day. Make a list of everyone you’d like to give mishloach manos to, and then go through the list and narrow it further down to a realistic amount of people you’ll visit.
3.
Start the day with a balanced meal. Load up on power foods before the nosh starts pouring in. Once your blood sugar starts rising and dropping like a Six Flags rollercoaster, your enjoyment is in danger. Ditto for the little ones. Make sure that everyone eats both a good quality protein and a complex carbohydrate to keep dizziness and crankiness at bay.
4.
Keep caffeine handy! Everyone needs a pickme-up sometime on Purim. Pack either hot or cold coffee to go, or stock caffeinated cookies in your freezer before Purim for a non-spillable surge of energy. To make the cookies, start with a basic oatmeal cookie recipe and then add at least two tablespoons of freshly ground coffee beans to the dough and bake. It’s that simple. Take heed however: this recipe is not for kids. The caffeine content is too high for children and may not be safe.
5.
Take a nap in the middle of the day! Yup, I know it sounds totally bizarre, but little kids with tons of sugar flowing through their veins, drunken men, and crowdmanaging mamas all need a break on Purim. Turn off the music, disconnect the bell, put a sign on the door and hop into bed for an hour nap. Nothing is going to happen if you disappear from the public eye for a short while. Except for one thing: Your family will be rested and able to enjoy the rest of the day!
6.
Make deliveries before the liquor comes out of the closet! Drunken husband? Hide the keys! Nobody wants to see a community member make the ill-thought-out decision to climb behind the wheel of a multi-ton vehicle when shikar. Make sure that all of your deliveries are done before the Man of the House has had his first drink!
7.
Keep the Kiddies Warm. With the weather warming up at an astonishing pace, this tip might not come in handy this year. But in the event that it is cold on Purim, keep in mind that frozen toes aren’t anybody’s idea of a good time. Little kids have been waiting to show off their costumes for ages, and covering up their costumes with a coat just isn’t an option. Avoid the freeze by investing in thermal underwear for your little ones before Purim rolls around. They’ll be both warm and happy!

Purim Survival Tips For Kids
Alright kids, Purim is the day you’ve been anxiously awaiting! It’s a day packed with fun, family, and friends! What could be better? Oh, the nosh! Lots and lots of it! To make sure that you’ll have the best possible time on this fabulous day, stick to these few short rules and happiness is nearly guaranteed.
1. No Kvetching!
This is the most important rule of the day. It’s the real game-changer that can make a carful of family members stay smiling and happy. (It’s also the secret to having your mother let you eat unlimited nosh…) Nobody wants to hear a car full of kids fight over which teacher to visit first and whose clown shoe is taking up too much room... Just go with the flow and have fun! Purim is only once a year! Don’t waste your precious moments bickering!
2. Eat Something Healthy!
You’ve waited so long for those mountains of overflowing nosh to come flooding in. Wait just a little bit longer and sit down to eat a healthy meal. You will feel so much better and be able to actually enjoy the festivities if you’ve fueled up on a good quality protein and fruit or vegetable before beginning your nosh-fest!
3. Take a Nap!
Umm, did I totally lose you there? Hello! I’m serious. A quick catnap in the middle of the day will give you energy to keep partying into the night. If you really don’t want to nap, at least offer to watch the littlest ones while your parents get a quick break!
4. Have Fun!
Don’t forget that you’re only a kid! Run around and have a blast!

Spring is in the air, and with it Purim. That of course, means alcohol. Jewish people worldwide will be purchasing all sorts of spirits, running the gamut from rum to vodka, and everything in between. Whether your taste is for the grain-based variety or for fruity wine, you’ll be exposed to alcohol and the power inherent in its very existence. “Drinking is not a joke,” is the phrase I hear multiple times when I track down a senior member of our own Rockland County Hatzolah and question him about alcohol use on Purim. Although I know that there is danger involved with alcohol misuse, I’m quite surprised at the force with which the Hatzolah member insists that “drinking is never a joke.” Could it really be that bad? I wonder, and ask him what heavy drinking does to the body. “The body shuts down,” he tells me. “With too much alcohol, everything stops working. The kidney and the liver stop functioning, and the body can’t regulate its temperature. Somebody who drinks too heavily may also have trouble keeping his

airway open, and if that person vomits, it can turn dangerous very quickly.” Of course, we also know that the sense of sound judgment is dampened, as well as the control over fine motor skills and memory. Internal brain changes cause a shikar to process stimuli at a slower rate than somebody who is not drunk, and balance quickly becomes a thing of the past; the affected person walks with an unsteady gait. In all, the drunken person loses control of his body from the inside out. “Medications,” he tells me, “also become affected by strong drink. Alcohol changes the dynamics of medication, completely altering the way they function.” With mashkeh flowing in nearly every home on the happiest of days, alcohol consumption is at its highest. Chocolaty braunfen and golden whisky adorn the tables in glass-bottled glory, while the menfolk down glass after glass, wishing one another “l’chaim.” Obviously, drinking is a mitzvah on Purim day, but really, how much is too much? The exact amount depends on various factors, such as the alcohol content in each type of drink and whether or not one is drinking on an empty stomach. Lightweights, like beer (containing an average of 5% alcohol), will take a person longer to hit the “too much” quota. By the time five 12-ounce beers have been consumed, it is considered “excessive” by the Centers for

To add insult to injury, when a drunken child arrives to the hospital, it is common procedure for an abuse report to be filed. Nobody wants that, especially when the stakes are already so high. “People don’t know it, but every year there are deaths in the heimishe community caused by overdrinking. Again, drinking is not a joke. It’s dangerous,” I am told by the Hatzolah member. “In the US alone, 88,000 people die every year from drinking too much.” “Baruch Hashem, our community doesn’t have a problem with drunken drivers, but every Purim

If someone is in the throws of vomiting, however, additional food may present a choking hazard and should be avoided. Clearly, the best way to stay safe on Purim is to minimize the appearance of alcohol around your house, drink sparingly and only on a full stomach. Although “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog” is considered to be the shortest sentence that includes all the letters of the alphabet, alcohol fans came up with one of their own: “Pack my box with five dozen liquor jugs.”
What you should know when visiting…. Missouri: Don’t be so eager to help clean up after the Purim seudah! If you are under 21, and the garbage you are taking out contains an empty bottle of alcohol, you can be charged with illegal possession of alcohol.
You can have a bottle of the world’s most expensive vodka for just mere 3.75 million dollars. “The Billionaire Vodka“ is first ice-filtered, then filtered through Nordic birch charcoal, and lastly passed through sand made of crushed diamonds and gems. It is sold in a platinum and rhodium encased, diamond-encrusted crystal bottle.
People with blue eyes have a higher alcohol tolerance.
Alaska: It is illegal to feed alcohol to moose. Ohio: It is illegal to feed alcohol to fish.
The reason why a person who is totally drunk will not remember what he did or said while in a drunken state is not because alcohol makes one forget. It’s because the brain temporarily loses the ability to create memories when someone is what is termed “blackout drunk.”

Grape to Wine, From
To Your Dining Room Table By: Sandy Eller
Different seasons bring with them certain associations. With the crisp fall weather comes thoughts of apple picking and hot mulled cider. Chanukah brings with it a yearning for all things fried. And with Purim and Pesach both rapidly approaching, our thoughts turn to one common element that figures prominently in both of these spring yomim tovim: wine. Thankfully, the days where the Jewish community was faced with only a choice between Malagas and Concords that were super-heavy and intensely sweet are far behind us. The kosher wine market continues to grow at record speed and walking into any kosher wine store can be an overwhelming experience as you find yourself faced with row after row of beautiful bottles, in all price ranges, bearing labels that can be written in a variety of languages. The journey from grapevine to your wine glass is a fascinating one. Grapes can be harvested by hand or by machine, with the distinction
between red and white wine being made very early on in the winemaking process. Both red and white grapes can be used to make white wine, with the grape skins removed in the crushing stage, giving the wine a pale hue. Red wines are created by crushing red grapes, skin and all, and allowing the skins to remain in the mix throughout the fermentation process, while with pinker rose wines, skins are removed during fermentation. No matter what variety of wine being produced, the extracted juice is held in a vat, where yeast — which can either occur naturally on the grapes or can be added to the product — converts the inherent sugar in
the grapes into alcohol. In the case of red wines, the grape skins rise to the surface of the vat and are submerged several times a day in order to keep the skins in contact with the juice. Once fermentation is complete, a process that can take anywhere from a few days to several weeks, red wines are pressed to remove the skins, and the aging, which can have a significant impact on the flavor of the
There are plenty of reds that go well with salmon and a lot of whites that go perfectly well with more substantial meals. wine, begins. Wines can be aged for as little as a few months or as long as twenty years for a more complex wine, although most
are typically ready to drink after a year or two. The container in which the wine is aged has a significant impact on the taste of the finished product. Wine can be aged in stainless steel vats or wooden barrels, and the condition of those barrels can also impact the flavor of the wine. A perfect example of this phenomenon would be a new Kedem wine bottled under the Herzog winery’s Variations label, with a single run of a California Cabernet Sauvignon split into two different types of barrels: half aged in French oak barrels, with the remainder placed in American oak barrels. The result? Two very unique wines with very different tastes, each one influenced by the wood in which it was aged. “It takes 18 to 24 years for an American oak tree to be tall enough and strong enough to make barrels,” explained Yoely Huss of Wine on 59. “In France it takes about 55 years for an oak tree to be large enough to make those same barrels. We all know that when you cut down a tree and you look at the lines inside a trunk, each line represents one year of growth. Those French oak barrels have a lot more complexity and flavor because of how long it took the tree to grow. The wines are tighter, more complex, while the American oak wines are much easier.” It goes without saying that the variety of grape used is a crucial factor in the taste of a wine. Walk into a wine store and you may be confused by names like “Pinot Noir” and “Merlot,” but each of those is a simply a different type of grape. While most
wineries throughout the world name their wines after the va-
who are purchasing wine to bring when invited for a Shabbos meal but don’t know what their hosts prefer, Huss typically recommends a s e m i - s we e t or a late harvest wine, but suggests that bringing two bottles of wine is an even better idea. “I like giving people a wine they don’t usually drink, and when you open two bottles, it can start a conversation about wine, which is a great way to open up a discussion,” said Huss. “It is also a great way to broad-

While for years, prevailing wisdom advised drinking white wines with fish and poultry, and red wines with meat — the wine market has exploded over the last two decades, bringing with subtler tastes and flavors. Huss recommends choosing wines by heaviness rather than by color. “In general, pair a heavier wine with heavier food and light wine with lighter food,” said Huss, noting that the “weight” of the wine is comparable to the difference in body between water and orange juice. “There are plenty of reds that go well with salmon and a lot of whites that go perfectly well with more substantial meals.” Just as the food world has seen an increase in sophistication in recent years as the kosher palate has gone more gourmet, the kosher wine market has experienced exponential growth — particularly over the last five years. Huss estimates that American consumers drink about 40 percent of the kosher wines produced in Israel, with dry red wines becoming increasingly more popular. At Wine on 59, which just recently doubled the size of its store to keep up with customer demand, Cabernet Sauvignon is the most popular wine. Often faced with customers
— people are very into bourbon,” said Huss. Understanding the difference between various types of whiskey is not particularly complicated. Whiskey is any spirit that is distilled from fermented grain mash containing anywhere between 40 to 94.8 percent alcohol. Rye is made from mash containing a minimum of 51 percent rye, often mixed with corn and barley. Bourbon, which must be made in the United States, is produced from a grain mixture of at least 51 percent corn while scotch is made from malted barley and is a product of Scotland. Finally vodka can be produced from an assortment of fermented grains including corn, rice, rye or wheat as well as potatoes, fruit or even sugar. While liquor may be the beverage of choice at kiddushim and aficionados are passionate about their favorites, Huss finds that schnapps is number two on the list this time of year. “When it comes to Purim, it’s all about the wine,” said Huss.
When you are going to be drinking a lot, drink a wine you know you like. en your taste when it comes to wines.” While Huss is a big believer in experimenting with different wines, he advises sticking with the tried and true for both Purim and Pesach. “People feel they need a special bottle of wine for Purim, not the same one they drink on Shabbos, but I think exactly the opposite,” said Huss. “When you are going to be drinking a lot, drink a wine you know you like.” Huss has also noticed an increased interest in mixed drinks, with people coming to the store toting recipes from mixologists. When it comes to hard liquor, the reigning whiskey seems to have been replaced by a newcomer in recent years. “Single malts used to be the only item you would see served at a heimishe kiddush, but in the Jewish world as — well as others

The Early Intervention Program (EIP) is a public program for children under the age of three who are either suspected of having or at risk for developmental delays or disabilities. Potentially eligible children must be referred to the county program (Rockland County, 845-364-2032) to receive EIP services. EIP is funded by New York State and county governments. All EIP services are provided at no cost to parents. Health insurance may be used for approved services. A child's eligibility for the program can be determined only by state-approved evaluators under contract, and all services must be authorized by the county.

HALACHOS AND MINHAGIM OF PURIM BY REBBETZIN Y. WEISSMANDL
108
/ THE MO NS E Y V IE W
Shabbos Zachur • The Shabbos before Purim is called “Shabbos Zachor.” • It is a Mitzvah d’Oraisa to lain Parshas Zachor once a year, because we are obligated in regards to “zechiras mechiyas Amalek.” This is done on the Shabbos before Purim in order to link the elimination of Amalek to the elimination of Haman, who was Amalek’s descendant. • During the reading of of parshas Zachor one must have in mind to fulfill the mitzvah of zechiras mechiyas Amalek. • It is accepted that women should try and be yotzei this mitzvah by hearing the reading of this parsha from a sefer Torah.
Machatzis Hashekel • It is a minhag al pi halacha to give three coins to tzedaka before Mincha on erev Purim, as a zecher of the Machatzis Hashekel that was given at the time of the Bais Hamikdash. Preferably, the coin should be named as half of a currency, i.e. a half dollar. • The minhag is to give a half a shekel for each family member, including small children. • There are some who are noheg to donate Machatzis Hashekel again on Purim morning before davening.
The Four Mitzvos • There are four mitzvos of Purim. • 1 Hearing the Megillah • 2 Matanos L’evyonim (giving gifts of money to the poor) • 3 Mishloach Manos • 4 Seudos Purim
Hearing the Megillah • Hearing the Megillah is the primary mitzvah of the day. The Megillah is read twice: once on the first night of Purim and once in the morning. One must take care not to miss hearing even one letter of the reading of the Megillah. If one is afraid one won’t hear every word, then one can quietly mouth along the words. • If one mouths the words, and then misses a word, one should continue mouthing the words until one catches up to the baal koreh. • When saying the brachos, the baal koreh and the listeners must stand — but during the laining itself, the listeners may be seated. • Before laining the Megillah the baal koreh says three brachos which are: 1. Al Mikrah Megillah 2. She’asa Nissim 3. Shecheyanu • All three brachos are said before both the evening and morning readings. • In the morning, during the bracha of Shecheyanu, one should have
in mind to be mekayem the mitzvos of the day: matanos l’evyonim, mishloach manos and eating the Purim seudah. • A woman who cannot attend shul should make sure to have someone who knows how to lain properly, in accordance with halacha, lain for her.
Mishloach Manos • Women are mechuyav in the mitzvah of mishloach manos, performed by giving two kinds of ready-toeat foods to at least one woman. One is not yotzei with giving mishloach manos before the morning reading of the Megillah. • One should not send mishloach manos to an mourner r”l, but may send to the family of an mourner. • An ovel is mechuyav to send to at least one person, but it is also muttar to send to the important people to whom she would usually send. • A woman is not permitted to send mishloach manos to a man. Likewise, a man is not permitted to send mishloach manos to a woman.
Matanos L’ Evyonim • One must give money to two poor people. The mitzvah is to give to the aniyim (poor people) of one’s own town. (i.e Kupath Ezra). The money must be handed over to the aniyim on Purim day. • One may give matanos l’evyonim to a needy ovel with no limitations due to his availus. An ovel may give matanos l’evyomim with no limitations. • It is better to donate more to the poor than to have an elaborate Purim feast or to send expensive gifts of food to friends.
The Purim Seudah • It is a chiyuv to eat a seudah on Purim. The minhag is to eat a second seudah that extends into the night.
Al Hanissim • In Shemoneh Esrei in the evening, morning, and afternoon of Purim, we say “Al Hanissim.” • If one forgets to say Al Hanissim in its proper sequence, and then remembers it, as long as he has not already pronounced the shem Hashem at the end of the brachah of Hatov shimcha no’eh l’hodos, one should go back and say it. After that point in the tefillah, he should not return to it, but rather say it before “Elokai netzor leshoni.” • In bentching, “Al Hanissim” should be recited before the words “ve’al hakol.” If one forgets to say it there, and if one has already pronounced the shem Hashem, one should not return to it. However, before the words “Harachaman Hu yezakenu,” one should say:
“הרחמן הוא יעשה לנו ניסים ונפלאות כמו שעשה לאבותינו בימים ”’ההם בזמן הזה בימי מרדכי ואסתר וכו

With a calendar of dates from Kush to Varsha Until the King’s own youthful Valets Who worked in Poras in the palatz Said “Gosh, Your Majesty, zippity doo! We’ve got sincere rachmanus on you! We’ve come up with a Great Idear: Let’s bring the suitable girls all here!” And so the king agreed, And accordingly, decreed: THE BACKSTORY: A long time ago in Amalekeh Tzeiten A gala party was ungegreiten By Achashveirosh, the king of Poras Who was having, poor fellow, Domestic tzoras So he granted himself a divoras From V. Hamalka, his Queen (erstwhile) When she failed to produce her Famous Smile. Just like that She was last year’s hat BUT… Being single again just wasn’t the same, Achashveirosh needed a wife in his haim. He had courtiers, nobles, gentlemen in waiting, Chamberlains, soothsayers, Spice Road merchants trading; He even had a badchan But what he needed was a shadchan! A BUSY TIME IN SHUSHAN: King A. promised emoluments, promotions; Busy networks were established over continents and oceans; Askanim and shtadlanim vied: They hustled and they bustled When shadchanim asked, “Who’ll join our lists?” The damsels cried, “Why, us’ll!” It’s said they copied all the names in Shushan’s Parchment Pages There even were some oldsters boldly lied about their ages To win a chance to hook the king and be his royal wife With piles of cash, brocades and jewels, who wouldn’t want that life! A PRACTICAL SOLUTION: Poor Melech A. was deep in The Parsha
He’d meet with a sampling of every race And each would be charming, in silks and in lace; And keeping in mind that he owned the whole place He would build an extension for more, just in case... IN A DISTRICT NEAR THE CAPITOL: Now, during the time of which we speak, In a quarter of Porus not known for chic— Lived an exiled tzaddik and Hadassah, his niece And they yearned to return to their land, and Peace See, Mordechai, Esther’s uncle, never lost his true emunah; He knew Hashem would bring them home; he hoped it would be soonah! He raised his niece, an orphan, from when she was a sprite Young Esther loved her uncle; he was her guiding light. THE ASPIRANTS GATHER… From every Mount and distant Island, As far as anyone could spy land— From Hodoo to Kush, what the king called, “My Land” The Empire’s maids were gathered in The sweet, the sour, the plump, the thin. Girls were gathered by trains and ferries, Accompanied by the king’s equerries. In Caravans of dromedaries The Royal Road and tributaries, all converged on Porus And escorts, pages, chaperones, all bellowed, “Make way for us!” AND: Once arrived in Shushan HaBirah Each girl was given a really good mirror, A Personal Trainer and a Makeup Artist, And fashion teams that were the smartest; Perfumes, creams and aromatic potions, Jewels and spices, beautifying lotions... The resultant bevy of slender and heavy

Multinational contenders, (And here and there a sprinkling of overage pretenders.) Prepared to meet their dashing prince They primped and curled, used every kintz There’s never been anything like it, since Much credit’s owed to Senor Haigeh Who was not your average vasser traiger. His tact and talent at their peak As Shomer Nashim tres Eunique... THEN: It came to pass that our bas Yisroel, Esther Was taken in the royal search for maidens to sequester AND... As time went on, the king made sure To meet each lovely maiden. Each tried her best to captivate With maquillage and klaiden FINALLY: They came to call Hadassah, That’s Mordechai’s niece, Esther. The King was smitten, dazed, undone He said I must confester! Of all the girls you’ve brought me It’s Esther that has caught me; She’s modest, sweet and so refined— Your king’s made up his Royal mind: I’ll marry pretty Esther At a feast, with wine and jester, (And a really smooth Orchester!) FOOTNOTE... Our heroine never mentioned to a soul that she was Jewish; Her uncle asked her not to, with her Royal status newish... BUT... Queen Esther’s uncle, Mordechai Was sticking close, to keep an eye And tried always to be nearby. He tarried in the courtyard gate From early morn until quite late, And happened thus to overhear Two fellas talking without fear: They planned to murder Esther’s spouse, Dispatch their king in his own House!
Each was a traitor and a louse. THE PLOT PLOTZED: Mordechai reacted, he didn’t pause a moment— He didn’t want the treachery he’d overheard to foment. He gave his niece Hadassah the eavesdropped information To save A. Rosh and stymie the illicit operation. She warned the king, her husband, “Beware Bigsan and Seresh.” The plotters were arrested, and both were doomed to perish A NOTE IS MADE… Mordechai Hatzadik’s deed was carefully recorded In Persia’s Imperial Book of Days, how regicide was thwarted…. AND THEN: In the course of events the mighty Persian King Promoted Haman Agagite, a local grubber ying. Now, Haman had an ego the size of Cincinnati When people didn’t bow to him, this ne’er-do-well went batty! He had his subjects genuflect so he could feel important, And when the people bowed and cringed, he loved it, though he oughtn’t. ASIDE: Haman hated Mordechai, Who greeted him with just plain,“Hi.” See, that noble descendant of Rochel Imainu Would only ever bow to Tzur Yisheinu. So, when Mordechai refused to bow, Haman got really frosted. No matter his exaltedness, when he saw this Jew, he lost it. The more he thought about the Jew, the more his face would blanche.

Though life was good he had to kill this Hebrew monkey wrench! ENTER ZERESH… Now, Haman was an Agagite, (not what you’d call a “Mentch”) He asked his helpmate Zeresh to dream up a Revench; He meant for Mordechai to die, but not just by himself— He’d make the Jewish nation pay, with limb and life and pelf. So Haman cast or threw a Pur, (a sort of Persian Lotto) It picked a date to “kill the Jews,” which had become his motto. And chose the most propitious time to execute his plan; He meant to slaughter every Yid right down to the last man. The month of Adar seemed just fine to finish off the Chosen People, And Haman couldn’t wait to dangle Mordecai from a steeple. NEXT... The next thing this big rasha did, he got the King’s permission To fully own the Empire’s Jews and also, in addition— To slice and rend and elsewise snuff as many Jews as possible. This Haman was unlikeable: in fact he was just hossible. ESTHER’S RESOLVE… Well, the news was bad, the news was grim and Mordechai
was fasting— The Thirteenth day of Adar for the Jews might be the last thing! He sent a message to his niece, the regnant Queen of Persia: He urged her, “Use your influence, it’s no time for inertia.” The Queen, in solemn, doleful mood, knew what this signified, And as she thought about the risk, she shivered and she sighed. It was the custom of the land, if guests were not invited They were not only shown the door, their death was expedited... So there was reason, surely, for our Queen to feel affrighted. “I’ll go and see my husband, but his favor for me is cooling— Please have our people fast for me three days and nights, no fooling…” To be continued..

Primary Elections By Ruchel Lebovits
TUESDAY, MARCH 8TH
Republicans held four contests on Tuesday, March 8. It was another strong night for Donald Trump, who won three out of the four: Hawaii, Michigan and Mississippi, thereby taking another 72 delegates on to his column. It was a good night for Ted Cruz as well. He won Idaho by a large percentage and received 20 delegates there and 57 in total for the night. John Kasich did fairly well in Michigan and received 17 delegates
What came as a bit of a surprise was that in Michigan, which was the only states with recent poll numbers, the polls were accurate almost to a tee, which may have been the first time this election season. for the night. For Marco Rubio, it was a terrible night. He received only one delegate and came in 4th in two of the races. What came as a bit of a surprise was that in Michigan, which was the only states with recent poll numbers, the polls were accurate almost to a tee, which may have been the first time this election season. The democrats held elections only in Michigan and Mississippi. In a major upset, Bernie Sanders who was behind about 20% in the polls, won Michigan, getting 67 delegates there and 71 for the night. Hillary won Mississippi by a very large margin and received 30 delegates there and 90 for the night.
CARLY FIORINA ENDORSES CRUZ On Wednesday, March 9th, former presidential candidate Carly Fiorina endorsed Ted Cruz for president. “I checked the box for Ted Cruz, and I am here to tell you why,” Fiorina said. “He has fought for our religious liberty. He is a leader and reformer. The truth is that Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are two sides of the same coin.” She went on to say that she believes that Cruz is the one man that can beat Trump and Hillary.
BEN CARSON ENDORSES TRUMP On Friday, March 11th, Dr. Ben Carson (who had dropped out of the race the week before) threw his support behind Donald Trump. It was a somewhat surprising endorsement, as Trump had at times during the campaign been very harsh towards Dr. Carson. Carson said, “What I’ve been seeing recently is political operatives ... once again trying to assert themselves and trying to thwart the will of the people. I find that to be

an extraordinarily dangerous place right now.” He said he had forgiven Trump and, “We moved on, because it’s not about me. It’s not about Mr. Trump. This is about America.”
This might be the night that ends the long battle — or the night that starts an entirely new one. SATURDAY, MARCH 12TH
The republicans had elections in Guam, The Virgin Islands, Washington D.C., and Wyoming. Neither of the US territories chose a winner, so there were only decisions in D.C. and Wyoming. Marco Rubio won D.C. and got 10 delegates. John Kasich came in a close second and got 9 delegates. Ted Cruz won Wyoming by a massive 66%, and received 9 delegates there. He was followed by Rubio at 19% and Trump at 7%. They both got 1 delegate.
The democrats did not hold any contests on this day.

RUBIO 18.0 The democrats and republicans will both be having contests in five states: NATIONAL Florida, Illinois, Missouri, CLINTON 51.0 North Carolina, and Ohio. SANDERS 39.6 For the republicans, this is a crucial night. Four out of the five contests are winner-take-all states, which means the person who wins the plurality in the state wins all of the state’s’ delegates. So far, Donald Trump leads the polls in three out of those four states. He is also a very close second to John Kasich in the 4th state, Ohio. If he manages to pull out a win in all of these states, he

is pretty much the guaranteed winner of the GOP nomination. But there is another possible outcome, which will lead the party to a brokered convention (a convention in which no candidate has a clear majority and the winner is chosen by political wheeling and dealing on the convention floor). In Ohio, John Kasich leads Trump by a small margin. In Missouri, Ted Cruz is virtually tied with him. Even in Illinois, Cruz comes a very close second in the polls. In Florida, Trump leads Rubio in the polls, but Rubio leads him by a healthy margin in early voting — and so far in this election in whichever state early voting was held, if Trump wasn’t doing well in the early voting, he did even worse on election day. So if Trump were to lose all or most of these states, his chances of reaching 1,237 delegates — the majority needed to secure the nomination — will become exceedingly slim. So this might be the night that ends the long battle — or the night that starts an entirely new one.
TUESDAY MARCH 22ND. The democrats have elections in 3 states this coming Tuesday, Arizona, Idaho and Utah. The republicans have only 2 contests, in Arizona and Utah. Even though Arizona is a winner-take-all state with 58 delegates up for grabs, there are no recent polls for that state.

Life’s Journey
128 / THE MO NS E Y V IE W
By Chaya Liba Aarons
6 If I want to get overwhelmed and discouraged, all I have to do is open the weekly circulars. Ads for play therapy, art therapy, music therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy all scream, “This will change your child! Give your child the gift of a better future!” I am woefully unlearned in the intricacies of mental health, and all of the wonderful means to navigate and improve it. Before I buckle under this avalanche of information, I’d better ask the experts. Off to Dr. Walker we go. Doctor, Doctor down the hall, which is the best therapy of all? I begin my litany but Dr. Walker holds up his hand after two sentences. He shakes his head like he’s dealing with a five-yearold and trying to explain relativity. “You’re making a mush out of this. Ritalin is one thing; therapy is quite another. So first off, therapy will not replace Ritalin.” Ahhh. Clarity feels good. “Therapy is nice. But that’s all it is: nice. It’ll paint your car beautifully, but it will not give it fuel. Your son’s brain lacks dopamine and he must get it; otherwise he can’t drive. Ritalin is his gas and that will make the real difference.” Yup, it makes such a difference, in fact, that it takes some creativity to cover up for

Doctor, Doctor down the hall, which is the best therapy of all? the sudden turnaround in Nachman’s behavior. We’re sitting around the table after a heavy Shabbos meal at my mother’s house when my sister-in-law Rivky looks at Nachman and then at me, and remarks, “You know, I’m so glad to see Nachman calmed down. When he was little I had this suspicion that he had some attention disorder or something. He could never sit still. But now…” She looks at Nachman again, who’s sitting on Aryeh’s lap and leafing through a colorful aleph-bais book, and nods, impressed. “Yeah, baruch Hashem,” I sigh with feigned nonchalance, and scan the area to make sure my mother’s still out of sight. “Kids grow up and change.” Some people are harder to fool, but I still manage somehow. At my sister’s house one Shabbos afternoon, my eighteenyear-old niece Yochi pipes up, “You know, Chaya Liba, it just can’t be it’s the same Nachman!” She laughs in wonder. “I’m looking at him and can’t find the old Nachman there!” “Yeah, well, look at how he’s being entertained now with that choir the kids are making. When he’s occupied he doesn’t act up. And he grew up a little, and he’s not at home…” Just then, the topic at the table changes, to my utter relief. At least I got to answer her so nobody is left wonder-
ing. It’s really not as hard as I thought it would be. The real reason the stark change in Nachman’s behavior can be camouflaged is that only my husband and I were the real victims of Nachman’s disorder. No one but us really knew how powerful he really was. To us, he was no “wild kid.” He was a dictator, capital D please. But now, with Ritalin, Nachman did a neat flip-flop. The world of ADHD is a world of extremes. If I don’t
I’m probably not the first human in the world to wish life could be easy. get the dose just right (which involves cutting microscopic pieces of the pill or opening the plastic capsule and removing/returning particles that skid all over the counter) and it’s just a weeny bit too much, the day is a stomachlurching roller coaster. The Ritalin propels us up, up, up in a tense, angst-filled ride, and with the end of its effect, we whiz down the roller coaster with drama and terror pounding in our ears. I don’t know what’s worse. When Nachman is in a depressed, trance-like mode, I am filled with just as much

desperation as when he’s out of control. When he cries continuously or just sits on the floor doing nothing and rejects the toys and games I ply him with, I wish I can just suck out all of the medication in his system and start over. “I wish it can just be normal, all the time.” I keep telling Aryeh. “No wildness, no depression. Just normal.” Mrs. Pearlman once pointed out that it’s that much harder for me since Nachman’s only my second child, and not further down the line. I didn’t have enough of “normal” to buffer the challenge of what is not. I don’t have enough confidence that we’re really a normal family to be able treat it with equanimity and a balanced perspective. I’m not convinced enough that it’s totally biological and not my fault to be able deal with Nachman’s issues without any guilt. But all this is part of the plan, designed to make me grow. I need to painstakingly shed my insecurity and don the cloak of Grace and Belief in myself. It’s hard living in this teeter-totter world. I’m probably not the first human in the world to wish life could be easy. Why is it either or? Why must I ride this roller coaster? There may be many answers, but I can think of one: It’s there to help me develop my faith.

Parenting to Perfection “Just read this week’s article. You sound like a fabulous mother!” Ruchy Reese compliments me when I send in my weekly column. Ha. I look at my kitchen and raise my eyebrows. I don’t disagree with people who believe me to be a good parent, but I am quick to point out that I have much to learn and improve upon. We all do. We are not given a universally accepted manual with instructions for every possible situation. Mistakes happen. Admitting them just makes us human. You may have noticed a proliferation of advice articles and pictures portraying “the flawless family.” Deep inside us is the longing for perfection, especially as parents. It all seems almost, possibly, within reach. Magazines catch our eyes on the stand: “The ONE thing you need to do to have a happy family...” “How a gluten-free diet changed my child...” And so on and so forth... Honestly, at the end of the day, I’m happy if my children are well fed and happy. Should I have to feel guilty that I didn’t feed them a whole grain, vegan dinner and let them play with homemade finger paint? Inundated with parenting advice can make us antsy. Is my child up to par? Will putting my baby into the “wrong” brands affect his shidduchim? I really want my baby to learn to read already!
132 / THE MONS E Y V IE W
At a women’s conference, mothers reflected on their choices: working or staying at home, school versus home education, small town versus city. A grandmother leaned over to the young mother near her and whispered, “When my generation had babies we didn’t think about it; we just did it.” Not anymore. We strive because we love our children, and we want them to have only the very best. We want them to eat organic food, read prize-winning books, sleep in all-cotton pajamas washed in dyefree detergent, and listen to educational CDs — all as we work at fulfilling jobs while keeping a beautiful and calm home. We are obsessed with the idea that we have the potential to be perfect parents. If we try hard enough, we believe, we’ll never make a mistake. We are constantly pressured to read the right books and articles, and take the right courses. We want our children to have more than what we had as kids: more opportunities, more options, and more happiness. After all, it is a natural instinct to want to provide the best for our children. Unfortunately, perfection is unattainable. Could it be that the pursuit of perfection is getting to us? As a service coordinator, I find parents often hesitate to take family training, a service offered to help guide parents with their child’s specific situ-
ation. Although therapy has become very accepted, people refuse to accept this service because it makes them feel as if something is wrong with the way they’re parenting. Diagnoses too, are shrouded in secrecy, as we struggle to keep our perfect front. So let’s admit it out loud: Parenting is an inexact science. We most definitely will make mistakes. Refusing to admit when we screw up is misguided pride and fear. We are afraid that if those mistakes become public we’ll be judged as failures as parents, and that reputation will follow our children. Perhaps, as parents, we often overthink perfection. When we really boil down the concept, our children want our time and atten-
tion — the things that money can’t buy. Your parenting path is unique to you. Parenting is an ongoing journey of learning and growing. We have to feel free enough to do it our way and learn from our own mistakes. Instead of wishing we could be the perfect parent right now, it’s much healthier to settle in for the long haul journey of coming to peace with ourselves as parents. Every child will teach you to parent in a way that no other one has before. Let go of that perfectionism. Your kids are adorable even if they don’t look like the Gerber baby, your house can be clean without looking like the cover of the design column in The Monsey
Mistakes happen. Admitting them just makes us human. View, and this article is okay even if I didn’t proofread it a fifth time! I’m no failure as a parent. I have plenty of room to grow and learn, but that doesn’t preclude me from success. Kids are pretty resilient and so are we. Let mistakes happen, but don’t make them a habit. Give your kid a cookie, have a cup of coffee and breathe. It’ll be OK.

LIVING ROOM Hi everybody! What a gorgeous day it is as I’m writing this article. Actually, it’s nighttime and the owls are hooting and the stars are twinkling PREP LIST: in the inky blackness… Okay I’m getting a bit too dramatic, but spring has • Garbage bags arrived, and with it we can open all the windows and let the fresh air in! • Gloves The living room is a room that generally serves the purpose of its name. • Shmattes Back in the days when the Nomads were wandering about, all they wanted • Broom, shovel, mop, was a room in which they could relax their tired, overworked bodies and duster, vacuum stretch their feet. Basically, they were in need of a living room. If you’re cleaner B”H lucky to have one, it should feel like a calm oasis amidst the hectic • Window/mirror kitchen area and the rest of the home. cleaner The bookcase, couch/es, and area rug are generally what make up the • Regular/mild cleanser living room. However, it is a place where reading and entertaining is done, • Floor cleaner so clutter abounds. Some people use this room only on Shabbos. Some of • Stepstool you have the playroom combined with the living room. And if you’re in a cozy four-room apartment, you usually have a couch and the seforim closet in there as well. I feel the living room is the easiest room in the home to clean (besides the linen closet). While writing this, I am wondering what to make you people clean... Just kidding! Don’t hold that against me! I wasn’t invited yet to all of your homes for a Shabbos meal yet, so not knowing how all of your living rooms look, we’ll stick to the basics. There’s not much organizing done here, so decisions are at a minimum. Most of you will opt to do this room after Purim. If you have the time now, you might want to divide it. Say, you can do the seforim closet now and the rest of the room after Purim.
Just a reminder that your mezuzahs might need checking...
1 START WITH YOUR CEILINGS AND WALLS AND WINDOWS. • I was told by many Yiddishe mamas that ceilings don’t really need cleaning, so we’ll dust or vacuum the corners in all their glory. • Wipe light fixture with a damp cloth. I mention this in every article, but please, if you remove the fixture, do not replace it before it is completely dry. • Spotlights: just use a damp cloth to wipe the inside rims, as spider webs tend to nestle in there. • If it is possible, remove any wall hangings when you clean the walls. Even if nobody touches behind the frames, when you’ll want to move the frames to another area, you will have a slight mark on the wall indicating that frames were once there. Subtle, but it’s there. • Remember never to spray directly on the wall hanging. • If you have curtains, remove them and wash as per instructions. • Drapes collect tons of dust. Keeping the pleats spread apart, use a handheld vacuum cleaner in an up and down motion. Don’t attempt to vacuum it side to side. • Dust blinds with a damp cloth. Wash windows and sills.

2 SEFORIM CLOSET • Remove any clutter from the outside top of the closet, and dust well. Don’t put anything back there, as it just makes the room look messy. Try making space in your bottom shelves. • Remove seforim, or books, one shelf at a time. • Dust the shelves. Wiping every cover of a sefer or book is purely your own preference. It is not a necessary thing to do. The ones that are used often can use a wipe down, but no need to spend a lot of time on it. Everyone has a spot or two in the home that they get stuck on. Me? It’s when I do my books and pictures. I’ll sit for hours looking at my albums and pretend that I’m working really hard and then treat myself to a long break because it was so exhausting. (Don’t judge me; looking at pictures of when I was once cute and innocent is heavy emotional work.) • Shake the books out. Again, use your judgment. The ones that were never used, leave them be. Okay, and this is my weakness: I tell you every week to throw or give away things you don’t need or use. But when it comes to books, I have a tough time parting with them. However, if your closet is overstuffed and it starts looking messy, you know it’s time to donate some stuff. • If you have shelves with doors at the bottom of your closet, empty them all out. Keep your photos or CD’s here. Not much else should be kept in your living room. If you keep anything else, dreidels or such, use open bins to keep them tidy.
3 COUCH/SOFA • Throws and throw pillows, can usually be washed in the machine. Always check instructions. • Generally (at least to me) couch and sofa mean the same. Although to be perfectly honest, I don’t think I ever used the word sofa. But, I do have some snazzy clients, and they make sure to point out the difference. A couch is, well a couch! It’s meant to lie down and read with your feet ROWENTA IS1430 PROCOMsprawled every which way. A sofa is more of a proper sitting component. A king’s chair comes PACT GARMENT STEAMER to mind. Do you think they used the term sofa in Macy’s Shushan? $74.99 • If you have a steamer, it works beautifully on fabric couches. Otherwise, vacuum first, and then softly do a once over with an upholstery cleanser. Try BISSELL Crud Suds Upholstery Cleaner . Wipe away with damp cloth. Don’t soak. Let dry • For Leather couches, try LEXOL leather cleaner. Spray onto a shmatte and wipe softly. • Vacuum between cushions. • Polish mirrors with your window cleanser. Wipe in a circular motion with newspaper. • Any other furniture, dust and wipe accordingly.

SURVEY: WHAT’S YOUR PURIM LIKE? 1.
Complete your survey in its entirety and send in by Thursday, March 17 for a chance to win $5 0 at Sock Shoppe!
What time of day do you hear the Megillah?
I like to be up for the vasikin minyan, and hear the laining then. Pretty early; I have to get the day rolling! I’m still busy with/exhausted from last minute mishloach manos packaging until mid-morning, so it’s hard to get out until late. I have a relative that lains at home for the family later in the day. 2. What kind of mishloach manos do you prepare?
Very simple, using only store-bought items Simple homemade food items. I make an effort for something classy or themed, without breaking the bank. Elaborate presentations of homemade or expensive foods, usually themed. Something that will be enjoyed at the Purim seudah. 3. Who do you send mishloach manos to?
Usually only to family members Family, teachers, and rebbeim All of the above, with the addition of neighbors and select friends
Almost everyone I know!
4. How do you give matanos l’evyonim?
I make sure to give through the various organizations that will dispense to those in need. I welcome collectors into my home and give with an open hand. I make sure to carry a wad of small bills in my pocket for whenever I come across someone collecting. Indiscriminately. In my drunken state, I’ve been known to hand hundred dollar bills to small children! 5. What’s the Man of the House’s drinking style?
One quick lick, and then a nap to fulfill his obligation A few sips here and there Enough to get him tipsy On Purim, alcohol goes like water! 6. What does your schedule on Purim look like?
Basically relaxed, now that everyone comes to me! It’s an enjoyable, fast-paced, fun day of hopping around to all of our loved ones. I spend my entire Purim in the car, traveling the tri-state area, visiting nearly everyone we know. It’s a quiet day; I wish it had more action. 7. Ladies, what kind of davening do you do on Purim?
I wake up early and get in a full Shacharis, being unwilling to miss this golden opportunity I try to work in extra Tehillim into my day, along with at least a full Shacharis The day is very overwhelming, but I try to daven my own tefillos as I run from place to place, in addition to brachos I wish I would get to daven! 8. Who chooses the costumes that your family will wear on Purim?
Mother, according to her vision/budget They are custom ordered or sewn to match a theme. The children get to choose their costumes. After all, it’s their main Simchas Purim! 9. Can you share some tips for making Purim an enjoyable day for both parents and children?

How much do you usually tip teachers and rebbeim on Purim? ______________________________________________________________________

Closing Costs by Ann Zeilingold LE: This “Loan Explanation” form replaces the old GFE. This is the estimate of costs associated with your mortgage loan, which is provided to you by your mortgage broker, banker and/or lender within three days of application. The purpose is to let you know how much it will cost you to procure this mortgage loan. There should be no surprises. There are actually regulations regarding LE disclosures. There are three different categories of fees. Category A will have fees that cannot change throughout the loan process. (Basically banker/broker fees) Category B (third party fees incurred by the broker/banker on behalf of the client) will have fees that can change within a 10% threshold, and category C has fees that can change (costs associated with tax adjustments and homeowner insurance costs). There is a new closing statement, replacing the HUD1, called the CD, Closing Disclosure. This is provided to the client at least three days prior to the closing so that the borrower has time to review all the costs. In my opinion, this additional disclosure is a good thing. I can recall the phone call that I got a year ago from a client, where my client told me that she was switching to another mortgage “professional,” because I had quoted $20,000.00 in costs and the other broker quoted $14,000.00. I was fortunate that she had a good attorney and between he and I showing her that my costs were actually lower, since this new broker didn’t tell her about her tax escrows or title costs, but was charging her actually 1.5 points and I was charging her none — I was in fact less expensive than the other party! Let us get into some details. Why does it cost $20,000+ to close in Rockland County? There are basically four categories of costs at closing. 1. Normal bank related fees,
154
/ T HE MO NS E Y V IE W
Why does it cost $20,000+ to close in Rockland County?
including appraisals, bank attorney, application, underwriting, and commitment fees. These usually range between $1,800 and $2,400. These are fixed costs, normally regardless of loan amount or purchase price. 2. The second set of fees is title related fees, which include mortgage and noterecording fees, mortgage tax, title searches, title insurance, endorsements, survey, and municipal searches. Some of these fees differ, depending on the loan amount and the purchase price. On a purchase of $500,000 and a mortgage of $400,000, these fees total $7,826.00 (this information was calculated by the title fees calculator on Madison Title.com) 3. The third set of fees is the costs involved with setting up your tax and insurance escrow account. You have to pay your insurance one year in advance, along with the interest for the first month from the date of closing until the end of the month. I n
Rockland County, taxes are paid one year in advance. There are the school taxes (paid in September), county and town (paid in January), and a village tax (paid when due, usually January or June). Basically, you will need between twelve to thirteen months of taxes at closing. This money is divided as follows: some for the bank, for the escrow account so that they will have enough money to pay taxes when they are due. Some for the seller, to reimburse him for taxes that he has paid in advance, and sometimes, some for the title company, to pay taxes due within 60 days of closing. 4. Points. A point is one percent the mortgage. This fee is charged to discount the rates. Example, if your mort-
gage is $400,000 and the rate is 3.875% with 0 points, one point may get you a rate of 3.625%. To add everything up, if someone was buying a home for $500,000, getting a mortgage of $400,000, with no points, and Real Estate taxes of $12,000, the closing costs will be in the neighborhood of $23,000. When you are contemplating buying a home, you will need your down payment and closing costs. Sometimes when I speak to clients, they get “sticker shock” on the cost to close. I understand them. It costs a lot to close.

This Adar, Norman’s Dairy Is Taking Their Yogurt To The People Norman’s: The People’s Yogurt
Rutherford, NJ – The people have spoken! Famous for their delicious yogurts, Norman’s Dairy is in the midst of a campaign for the month of Adar to emphasis the vast array of products they have on offer. There is literally something for everyone: Young and old, girls and boys, women and men. From Greek yogurt to Taste, Creamy Blends to 80 Lite, and everywhere in between - Norman’s has you covered! “The People’s Yogurt” advertisements have caused quite a stir in the yogurt-eating community and beyond. “We realized that using real people in our advertisements was the key to depicting how much the community loves and supports
the Norman’s brand,” says a spokesman for Norman’s. “The month of Adar was the perfect time to roll out a campaign with bright, vibrant graphics and a great unifying message. It is a time for laughter and excitement, and I think it’s safe to say that our advertisements have achieved just that.” There are many reasons for Norman’s underlying success in the dairy industry. In addition to
creating yogurts that are all natural, without artificial flavoring and colors; all Norman’s yogurts are products in their very own stateof-the-art Cholov Yisroel factory, fostering great innovation and allowing for vigilant quality control and the highest kashrus standards. Don’t miss Norman’s delightful award-winning yogurt lines including Greek Original, Light, Creamy Blends, Pro, and Kids, as well as Low-Fat, 80 Lite, Poppers, and Kiddies all in an extensive range of delectable flavors.
