THE REAL GLOW

(Re: How to Build a Campfire, Issue 409)

I appreciated the articles about camping and building campfires. It brought me back to the summers of my childhood. Every year, my family took a long kayaking trip, usually down the Delaware River. To this day, when I want to relax, that’s the image that comes to me: floating down a sparkling river with two green mountains soaring up on either side of me, the blue sky above and the sun warming me through. The camps my children attend keep them very busy with fancy shows and trips to amusement parks, but I think that kind of fun is very contrived. It doesn’t compare to spending time in nature, slowing down and connecting with yourself and the people and the world around you. Building a fire with just the wood on the ground and your own determination brings a glow of satisfaction that no roller coaster can ever match.

Thanks for a great read.

WALK THE WALK

(Re: Off the Beaten Path, Issue 409)

I really enjoy the variety of articles in The Monsey View. Most recently I enjoyed the articles about frum families’ experiences with hiking and camping. I wanted to remind people that it’s important to educate yourself about the halachos of techum, especially when vacationing or camping. We’re used to checking the eruv and checking our pockets before going out for walks on Shabbos, but the issue of techum Shabbos is less well known.

BRAID AND BAKE

(Re: A Challah Bake, Issue 408)

Thank you for your amazing magazine. Wednesday is the highlight of my week!

I was excited to see your Challah Guide, having tried various recipes without achieving the perfect results. I have a couple of questions though. The recipe stated that this dough makes seven 3-lb. challos. Which pan size should be used? Also, the recipe says to transfer the dough to a bowl before rising. Is this an important step, or can it stay in the mixer bowl while rising (as I watched my superexperienced mother-in-law do)? Lastly, the instructions don’t call for punching down the dough before braiding. Is it necessary to do this? Thanks for your help!

THERE’S A PIECE WAITING FOR YOU.

THE MONSEY VIEW RESPONDS:

Use oval 3-lb. size pans. You do not need to transfer to a separate bowl if you would like to let it rise in the mixer bowl. You do not need to punch before braiding.

GUIDE FOR THE PERPLEXED

(Re: A Challah Bake, Issue 408)

Thank you for such a great magazine. I love how everyone in the family can find something interesting to read in every issue.

As a newlywed, I was really excited to see the Challah Guide. Though my mother made sure to teach me how to braid challah when I was bas mitzvah, that was quite a while back. Most cookbooks nowadays don’t have such instructions, so I clipped your guide to have it handy each time I bake challah.

I was also excited to see that you printed an exact recipe for challah dough. I find that a lot of people don’t use exact measurements for many basic recipes, because they just kind of know what they’re doing. But as a new cook, I need an exact recipe to get me started.

Looking forward to more amazing guides and basic, heimishe recipes.

THE EXTRA MILE

(Re: Excursions, Issue 393)

I just spent a beautiful Shabbos in Tannersville, where I met several women who were inquiring about attractions in the area. Is there any boating? they wondered. Where can we take the kids?

I was able to help them by telling them about Saugerties Marina, the boat rentals at North-South Lake Compound, the must-see Kaaterskill Falls and Putin Plus’s sports fun. They were surprised that I had this knowledge at my fingertips. “How do you know all this? Were you in this area before?” they asked.

My answer was simple. I’m a proud reader of The Monsey View and thus a grateful owner of your Excursions guides! It really enhances our summer. Thank you!

YOUR SAY

CLEAN START

Dear Monsey Drivers, I’ve noticed that many drivers often stop near my house, remove the trash from their car, and dump it in the garbage cans in front of my house. Usually the garbage involves leftover food and wrappers from meals eaten in the car while traveling.

I pay my cleaning help to clean my trash cans each week, and when you dump your garbage in my can, you destroy all that work and I have to clean it again. The trash bins are for my personal use only. However, I would not mind if you use it to discard your garbage in a properly closed bag.

Thank you,

PARSHAS RE’EH

Compassionate Compassion

In this week’s parsha , the Torah discusses the ir nidachas , an entire city that engages in idolatry, and must be completely destroyed. All belongings must be gathered on the streets and burned; it’s prohibited to take pleasure from them.

The pasuk concludes, “V’nasan lecha rachamim, verechamcha — and He will grant you compassion and be compassionate with you” (Devarim 13:18).

Rashi explains that so long as there is avodah zarah in this world, there exists a charon af, Heavenly wrath. By destroying the assets of the ir nidachas rather than deriving pleasure from them, Hashem will remove His charon af and bring rachamim instead.

In the pasuk , a repetitive phrase is used to describe Hashem’s reaction of compassion. Why is the expression of rachamim used twice in a row?

IN THE SUMMER OF 1997, Moshe Schwartz of Eretz Yisroel experienced a medical crisis. His doctors recommended he travel to California to see a specialist.

Arriving in Los Angeles, he was overwhelmed by the gracious assistance of some local askanim. He was picked up from the airport and driven to the Cedars-Sinai Hospital. The askanim assured Moshe that he need not worry about the financial aspect. “We’ll try to work on donors,” they said.

The first stop they made was to a well-known benefactor, Reb Anschel. They described the situation, and Anschel was visibly moved. He was accustomed to making large contributions to worthy causes, but for some reason, this time Anschel wanted to do more. An inner voice prodded him, Anschel! This is a great opportunity! After all, whoever has rachmanus on Hashem’s children, Hashem has rachmanus on him.

Anschel was surprised at his own emotions. This wasn’t the first time he was helping out a Yid in need. He was con-

stantly involved in tzedaka. Why did this feel different?

Somehow, he found himself signing a blank check and giving it to the askanim. “Here, fill it out for as much as this Yid needs.”

Several weeks passed. Moshe was discharged from the hospital and was preparing to return to his family in Eretz Yisroel. Before he left Los Angeles, he wanted to express his hakaras hatov to his kind benefactor. He wrote a warm letter, and since it was nearly Chanukah, he decided to purchase a silver menorah to go along with it. This would be his way of expressing his gratitude to Anschel for giving him the gift of life.

One of the askanim accompanied Moshe to Anschel’s home. They knocked on the door and waited. Moshe was eager to meet the man who had so selflessly helped him. But there was no answer. No one was home.

The askan made some phone calls and discovered that

128 www.themonseyview.com 845.600.8484 The Monsey View August 9, 2023

Anschel had traveled to New York, where he had a branch of his business in the East Side. He was to remain there for the next little while, and would return to his home in Los Angeles after Chanukah.

Moshe was not sure what to do; he had already purchased the gift. He decided to ship it by UPS.

Over in the East Side, late one afternoon, Anschel was sitting in his office. Suddenly, he felt dizzy. Black rings circled in front of his eyes at a dizzying pace. The next thing he knew, there were paramedics standing over him.

Anschel learned that just after he had passed out, a UPS delivery man had come to his office to deliver a package. He was the one who found Anschel, unresponsive and alone in his office, and called the ambulance.

The package he was delivering was none other than the silver menorah shipped from his hometown, Los Angeles, by the man whose life he had saved!

Before long, Anschel was discharged from the hospital. It was perfect timing — just in time to light the first light of Chanukah.

On that night, with great emotion, two men on opposite ends of the world recited Shehecheyanu with extra fervor. Moshe, in his home in Yerushalayim, who had merited his refuah thanks to Anschel, and Anschel in the New York, whose life was saved by a messenger sent by Moshe. It was clear to Anschel that indeed, one who displays compassion to another, will be blessed with compassion from Above. * * *

The Gemara (Shabbos 151b) explains, based on this pasuk (ibid.), “Kol hamerachem al habriyos, merachamen alav min haShamayim” — Anyone who has compassion on Hashem’s creatures will receive compassion from Above.

Reb Eliyahu Lopian explains:

There are times when Hashem wants to be merachem on someone, but the person needs a zechus in order to merit that compassion. So Hashem will send an opportunity for the person to display compassion toward another Yid, and through this he will be worthy of rachamei Shamayim

This is the explanation of the pasuk. V’nasan lecha rachamim — Hashem sends you compassion; He sends you an opportunity to be merachem on another Yid, and through this you will acquire “v’rechamcha” – Hashem will shower you with compassion.

Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

Congressional Leader Congratulates Skvere Rebbe on Granddaughter’s Wedding

Among the many Mazel Tovs shared at the August 2 wedding of the Skverer Rebbe’s granddaughter was one that came from an unusual source – Capitol Hill.

Rockland Daily reported that Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy sent a letter to the Rebbe extending his warmest wishes and referencing his recent visit to New Square.

“Mazel Tov on this joyous occasion of your granddaughter’s wedding,” wrote McCarthy in the July 28 letter. “Your guidance and wisdom have undoubtedly played a significant role in shaping your granddaughter’s life and guiding her to this moment. Today, you can take pride in witnessing her take this next step.”

McCarthy reportedly decided to send the letter after hearing from Congressman Mike Lawler that he planned to attend the wedding. Lawler hand-delivered the letter to the Rebbe, with his district director, Rafi Silberberg, saying that McCarthy has found his visits to New Square events to be memorable.

“I don’t think there’s ever been such a close tie, with the Orthodox community having a direct channel to the speaker of the house,” said Silberberg.

Incandescent Bulbs Banned in Favor of Brighter, Energy Efficient LEDs

They have been lighting up the world since the 1800s, but last week, a ban on the manufacture and sale of incandescent bulbs went into effect.

CNN reported that it took the government sixteen years to pass the ban, an effort that first began during the presidency of George W. Bush that was later tabled by the Trump administration. The ban was brought back to life by the United States Department of Energy in April 2022, setting a standard that required all light bulbs to emit at least 45 lumens per watt, approximately three times more than the amount produced by a standard incandescent bulb.

The ban does not prevent anyone from using incandescent bulbs that they already own, and certain types of bulbs are exempt, including appliance, bug, reflector, colored, infrared, showcase and left-hand thread lamps, as well as plant, floor, showcase and black lights. Also excluded from the ban are specialty bulbs, including three-way, chandelier and certain odd sized bulbs. While LED bulbs are more expensive to purchase, the Department of Energy estimates that consumers will save nearly $3 billion each year on their utility bills.

Consumers who are accustomed to measuring brightness in watts, which measure how much energy bulbs draw, are going to have to learn to start thinking in lumens instead. While a typical household bulb uses 60 watts of energy, a comparable 800 lumen bulb needs just eight to 12 watts to generate the same amount of light.

While the ban may seem like another example of government intrusion, Americans have been moving away from incandescent bulbs for years. According to the National Electrical Manufacturers Association, less than twenty percent of the bulbs sold during the first three months of 2022 were incandescent, reported CNN

Next up on the list of bulbs to be banned? Compact fluorescents, those twisty spiral bulbs that became popular approximately 30 years ago. While they use significantly less energy than incandescent bulbs and last about ten times longer, they will not meet a new 120 lumen per bulb standard that could go into effect as soon as the end of next year.

New MTA Price Hikes Hit Drivers and Commuters

Whether you choose to drive or take public transportation, getting around in New York City is becoming more expensive than ever.

Toll hikes went into effect on August 6 at Metropolitan Transportation Association bridges and tunnels including the Brooklyn-Battery Tunnel, Bronx-Whitestone Bridge, Queens-Midtown Tunnel, RFK Bridge, Throgs Neck Bridge and Verrazano Narrows Bridge. New York E-ZPass prices rose six percent, while those with out of state E-ZPass tags and drivers who pay their tolls through the mail were hit with a ten percent increase.

POSITIVE THINKING #2

Last week we discussed the drawbacks of negative thinking. This week, let’s focus on the positive! Here are some tips to get you started on the road toward positive thinking:

 It is essential to begin on a positive note from waking up. That’s why we start off our day by saying Modeh Ani. As you say the words, think about their meaning and how thankful you are to Hashem for all the good in your life: that you are alive, that you are healthy, that you have what you need, etc.

 Stop every once in a while throughout the day to examine your thoughts. If they are mostly negative, look for a way to turn them around and focus on the positive side. Keep repeating to yourself, “This too is for the best,” and things will turn out well.

Subway, bus, Long Island Rail Road and Metro-North commuters have an extra fifteen days of lower prices before they too see a jump on their travel costs. Subway and bus fares will go up 15 cents to $2.90, while monthly and weekly tickets for LIRR and Metro-North will increase by four and a half percent.

 If a problem arises, deal with it instead of putting it off until it settles itself.

 When you face a problem, never tell yourself, “I can’t do it.” Try it most of the time you will succeed.

 Chase away negative thoughts by focusing on something positive.

 Talk positively about yourself. Every person has a lot of good in them you can always find plenty of good in yourself. If a negative thought steals its way in, push it away and think about how fortunate you are.

that happens.

Even if your mind is not in a happy state, when you send it a signal that “I am happy” it will get the message. This trick is a powerful tool for fighting stress. Even a fake smile is better than no smile, both for you and the people around you.

 Surround yourself with positive people, especially the people you go to for advice. That way you will always be fed positive ideas.

 “The glass is not half empty, it’s half full.” Focus on the positive side in everything. Seeing the positive in others will help you see the positive in yourself.

 Try to speak positively. Let’s say you see a glass at the edge of the table, don’t say, “It’s going to tip!” Better say, “Move it back so it won’t fall.” Don’t say, “It’s a hard piece of gemara.” Better say, “You need to pay extra attention for this ” Always concentrate on the positive.

Potential Burn Risk Prompts Baby Monitor Recall

Parents who use Philip Avent digital video monitors to keep an eye on their babies are being urged to check their units’ model numbers to determine if it is one of nearly 13,000 that are being recalled because of a potential battery defect.

 The Kedushas Levi writes that telling yourself you are worthless or Hashem doesn’t need you is a apikarsus. Be humble, but at the same time know your worth.

 Be open to humor. Allow yourself to smile and laugh. Humor is especially helpful when things are going rough. Look for the funny side in everything

Duis autem vel eum iriure dolor in hendrerit in vulputate velit esse molestie

 Exercise and music – best is to have them together! – are a very positive way of reducing stress and putting yourself in a good mood. Supplements are another important way to relax your mind. Most important of all is to get a good night’s sleep. That will purge you of negative thoughts and allow you to focus on the positive.

Above all, remember to thank Hashem for every little thing in your life, even those that do not look good. Hashem knows what is best for you. That will lead you down the path of happy and healthy living.n.

To your health,

The Consumer Product Safety Commission announced last week that a problem with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery was linked to 23 complaints filed in Europe of baby monitors that overheated, resulting in seven minor injuries. The baby monitors affected by the recall have model number SCD630 or SCD843 stamped on the bottom of the parent unit, with a manufacturing date that falls between March 2016 and December 2019. They were sold from March 2016 through January 2020 at a price range of $120 - $200.

While no injuries have been reported yet in the United States, anyone who owns an affected monitor is being advised to stop using it immediately and to contact Philips Avent for a free replacement at 833-276-5311.

CHAPTER 18

Riva struggles to process the knowledge that Chevi is bullying Fraidy. Yaakov suggests that they move in with Riva’s parents for Pesach, but it turns out that Lani has already snagged the invitation.

It was convenient to blame a lack of communication on being busy. But as Lani stood in front of the single bedroom closet that contained Malky, Shana, Chevi, OZ, Simcha, and Shifra’s clothing, trying to figure out where and what to start packing for Pesach, being busy was a lame excuse that kept her from dialing Riva.

In fact, when else, if not precisely during such busy times, did she and Riva normally call each other a hundred times a day, to discuss crucial matters such as which tights would be in that season, what are the kids eating for supper, what time is Maddie finishing by you, and give me your recipe for that heavenly mango pineapple sorbet?

Well, recipes weren’t relevant this year — she’d helped her mother with

the baking one day, using her mother’s recipes, and that was that. And Maddie — who was Maddie anyway, right?

Lani took a pile of shells off the shelf and put it down on Shana’s bed, one of the two bottom bunks in the room. She had to get moving. She’d sent the girls out with a list of errands, the boys were outside with neighbors somewhere, and Shifra was napping. So, shells.

The shells she needed to pack depended on the clothing she was taking along.

Hello, Riva, help me.

No, they weren’t too busy to talk. And if until then she’d thought she was to blame — that she couldn’t stand talking to Riva because talking to her sister made her get all mad about the loan and the paused construction — she’d been getting the vibe lately that it

ESTY HELLER 144 www.themonseyview.com 845.600.8484 The Monsey View August 9, 2023

wasn’t all about her. Riva was acting strange. It was obvious from their very few and very brief conversations that Riva was the one who was anxious to get off the phone.

Maybe Riva felt uncomfortable. She certainly had reason to, Lani thought grimly.

She moved the pile of shells over to a corner of the bed and once again turned to face the overstuffed closet.

Okay, this was ridiculous. She was shooting herself in the foot; the only one suffering for her silence was herself.

It felt a little strange to dial Riva’s number out of the blue. When was the last time she’d called Riva without having a specific question to ask?

Riva didn’t answer her landline. Lani tried her cell, realizing a second too late that it probably didn’t make sense to call someone on her cell for packing advice.

“Hi, what’s up?” Riva whispered.

“Why are you whispering?”

“I’m at work. Do you need anything?”

“You’re at work? It’s Sunday! And Erev Pesach!”

“Hang on, one minute.”

Lani heard light footsteps, a door opening and closing, and a moment later, Riva was back. “I stepped out. I had to come in today, my boss insisted. What’s doing?”

“Um, nothing, I mean, nothing important. I wouldn’t have called you if I’d known you were at work.”

“It’s okay. I can listen.”

Lani pulled the hosiery store bag with all her girls’ tights out from the corner of the closet and lined it up next to the shells on the bed. “No, no, seriously. Not important. I’m just, like, packing here, and I had some questions. You know, it’s almost more overwhelming to pack up eight people for eight days than to make Pesach. But anyway, we can talk later.”

“Oh, you’re packing to go to Mommy?”

There was something unnerving in her voice, almost bitter. “Uh, yes,” Lani stammered.

Was there anything wrong with what she’d said? Riva knew she was moving in with her parents for Pesach; Lani wasn’t revealing any news here. Was she upset about that? Jealous?

“So, like, you’ll be there for the entire Yom Tov?” Riva asked. “You aren’t going to Chaim Tzvi’s parents for a Seder or something?”

She didn’t sound jealous. Just… weird. Where was she heading with this? “N-no. They didn’t invite us this year. They’re having two move-in families plus the young couple.”

“Ah. Aha, okay.”

It was quiet for a moment. Lani perched on the corner of Shana’s bed, feeling oddly tongue-tied. “Uh, so you’ll come for one Seder?” she asked.

“Maybe,” Riva replied coolly. “We’ll see. Anyway, I need to go back in now. Anything else?”

“No, nothing else. Take care.”

Packing somehow felt even more overwhelming after hanging up.

* * * * *

When the Strohs arrived at Zeidy and Bubby Miller’s house for the second Seder, Bubby showed everyone where to sit. Naturally, Fraidy’s seat was right next to Chevi Eisdorf. Where else would Bubby seat her? She and Chevi were the same age and always sat together.

Fraidy frantically turned to her mother. She’d so badly wanted to stay home for the Seder, for this very reason, but her mother had told her that they couldn’t miss Zeidy’s Seder, and that she would make sure that Chevi wouldn’t get anywhere near her.

She still hadn’t wanted to come, but really, there was no choice. What would they tell Bubby?

True to her word, her mother went over to the chair where Fraidy was meant to sit and sat Tzippy down. Then she wheeled over the high chair next to Tzippy and strapped Eli in. She took the next seat, and Fraidy sat down after her.

There were three seats between her and Chevi now, but still, every time Fraidy looked up, she caught Chevi’s eyes on her. It was a big dining room, but with both families squeezed together around the extended table, it somehow felt small and stuffy. The only safe place to keep her eyes was on her Hagaddah.

In middle of Maggid, just before the makkos, her mother stood up and took a cranky Eli out of the highchair. “I’m going to put him to sleep,” she told Fraidy.

She was barely out of the room when Fraidy heard Chevi calling, in a low voice. “Psst. Fraidy?”

At first Fraidy ignored her, pretending she hadn’t heard over the noise in the room. But when Chevi repeated, “Pssst, pssssssst,” for the third time, she tipped her chair back and reluctantly turned her head to her cousin.

“You said Mah Nishtanah soooooo beautifully. You only stuttered six times, I counted. Wow, tell your mother to

Fraidy felt her face heat up. She pushed her chair all the way in to the table, squeezing her body into a tight space, and lowered her eyes back to her Hagaddah. After a minute, her brother Shaya came around with a bottle of grape juice and filled up her and her mother’s kosos

The next thing Fraidy knew, she was soaking wet. Grape juice rained down from the table, and she jumped up, nearly slipping in the puddle on the floor. At the same moment, she noticed Chevi sliding quietly back into her own seat, the picture of innocence.

“Oh my, Fraidy!” Bubby cried. “Goodness, how did that happen?”

“I-I-I… d-d-didn’t…”

Bubby came over with a pile of napkins. “Okay, don’t worry, sweetie. We’ll clean it up. And maybe Chevi has something you can change into?”

Fraidy stared down at herself. Her brand new Yom Tov outfit, a beautiful mauve pleated skirt and sweater, had huge purples stains all over.

Her grandmother bent down to wipe up the grape juice

on the floor. Fraidy took a few napkins and dabbed it over the stains on her sweater. She knew it was pointless, but she also knew that she was not changing into any of Chevi’s clothes, no matter what. She dumped the napkins on the table and left, marching upstairs to the room where her mother was putting Eli to sleep.

“Oh no! Yikes!” her mother whispered in horror when she saw Fraidy. She tiptoed out of the room and closed the door gently behind her.

“I’m not going back down,” Fraidy declared fiercely.

“Oh, please, Fraidy. There’s nothing embarrassing about grape juice spilling. It could happen to anyone. Remember how Tatty’s kittel looked last year after Pesach?”

Fraidy was quiet for a moment. Then she said turned a pained face to her mother. “Chevi spilled it,” she said. “On purpose.” *

“Chevi?”

Chevi turned at the sound of Riva’s voice. She looked startled.

“Can you come to the kitchen for a minute, please?”

“Uh…”

“Now,” Riva said coldly.

Chevi stood up and Riva let her walk ahead of her. In the kitchen, Riva folded her arms and glared at her niece. “What was that all about?”

“What?” Chevi asked.

“What? Don’t ask me what. You just spilled grape juice all over Fraidy. Can you explain the meaning of that?”

“That’s not true, I didn’t! She’s such a liar!”

“Who’s a liar?”

Riva’s mother had entered the kitchen and caught Chevi’s words.

Riva’s eyes flitted between Chevi and her mother. “Uh, nobody,” she said, darting another icy glare at Chevi. “Nobody’s a liar. And I think Chevi knows that,” she added sharply.

She waited for her mother to leave, but her mother got busy at the blech, rearranging food. Chevi took the opportunity to escape back to the dining room.

Fraidy was still upstairs, and Riva debated if she should go back up and force her to come down. She decided to give her daughter some space, at least until the end of Maggid.

Riva returned to the table and sat tensely as her father continued leading them through the Hagaddah. Finally, when it was time to go wash, she headed upstairs.

“You’ll just sit next to me the whole time,” she cajoled a sobbing Fraidy, “and if I get up to go help Bubby serve or whatever, you’ll come along with me. I know it’s hard, and when Yom Tov is over, me and Tatty are going to crack down on this. We’ll make sure she never starts up with you again.” She gave Fraidy a little nudge. “Come, Fraidy, let’s try to be brave.”

Fraidy stood up, took one last look at her purple-stained skirt and sweater, and shuffled after Riva.

Riva was on edge for the rest of the Seder, as though she was an observer to the scene: Matzah being passed around, kids asking for more — no, more! A lot – of the “white” marror, a Yom Tov Seudah being served. She hardly exchanged a word with Lani, pretending to be busy with Tzippy whenever their eyes met. At her side, Fraidy was quiet the entire night, and Riva’s heart seesawed between intense pity and burning rage.

It was during tzafun that Fraidy finally opened her mouth. Shaya was clutching Yaakov’s afikomen bag to his chest with one hand and flipping pages in the Toys4U catalog with the other, showing Yaakov exactly what he wanted, then changing his mind, then changing his mind again. When he finally made up his mind — “The Playmobil fire station, um, no, rollerblades, no, no, I think a new scooter…” — Yaakov turned to Fraidy. “And you’re not asking for anything?”

Shielding part of the stains on her sweater, Fraidy threw a hate-filled look at Chevi and then blurted, “I’m asking to change schools right after Pesach.”

Riva gulped, glancing frantically at her mother and at Lani to see if they’d heard. But before she could determine anything, and before Yaakov had a chance to respond, OZ Eisdorf ran over to Zeidy Miller and, using his built-in microphone, made an announcement. “Zeidy, for afikomen, I’m asking that you give Andy a lot of money so he’ll finish building our house!”

I always wondered, what does “doing Amazon” actually mean? How did everyone (and their neighbor) find products to sell, how did they build listings, how did they get customers to buy their products?

And most importantly, did it work? Was Amazon the answer to all parnassah problems? If yes, what would it take for me to become part of that “everyone”?

THERE WAS ONLY ONE WAY TO FIND OUT: BY JUMPING ON THE BANDWAGON.

Now that I’ve done it, I look back and replay the events surrounding that jump, shuddering at some of my memories, reveling in others. It’s hard to answer the many questions people ask me about my business. They want to hear about a clear path to success, they want me to decide what they really want to know: Is this for me?

It may be, it may not be. As with every business out there, there’s a lot of opportunity, and an equal amount of risk. I’ve learned a lot about business along my journey, but even more, I learned about bitachon, about my limitations, and about remaining focused on the big picture when the small details seem to take over.

I DECIDED TO OPEN AN AMAZON BUSINESS BECAUSE…

I was very much done. Done being employed. Working long hours outside the house and earning an hourly wage wasn’t working for our family anymore. I needed more flexibility with my schedule, and we also needed to increase our income. But my husband was learning in kollel, and I wanted to stick it out as long as possible, continuing to support his learning.

Amazon seemed to be the perfect solution. The draw for me was the ecommerce concept that you could earn money while you sleep. I knew it wasn’t as simple as that; otherwise, everyone and their neighbor and their neighbor’s cousin, too, would be selling on Amazon. But there was some truth to that statement, and even if it took a lot of work at first, the “passive income” model was very appealing.

SOMETIMES IT SEEMS LIKE EVERYONE AND THEIR NEIGHBOR DOES AMAZON.

THE FIRST THING YOU NEED TO DO IS…

Learn.

Working in the manufacturing space for many years, I’d gained a lot of experience in the process of product development and importing goods from the Far East. That was an excellent skillset to bring to this project, and it certainly proved helpful throughout the process, but it wasn’t enough. In order to “do Amazon” you have to “learn Amazon.” Well. Really, really well.

My learning process involved hours and hours of free training courses, as well as talking to many Amazon sellers and learning about their experiences. These two were equally important. The courses helped me learn the nuts and bolts of Amazon’s seller platform, as well as Amazon’s confounding Terms of Service. Speaking to sellers helped me explore various selling strategies and figure out which one would be a good fit for me.

HOW THE PROCESS WORKS

There are two kinds of sellers on Amazon. The first category finds great wholesale deals on any item under the sun, purchases the goods from qualified vendors, and adds his price offer next to other sellers selling the same goods on Amazon. These sellers don’t create their own listings. They’re the category you’re accessing when you click Have one to sell? Sell on Amazon. It’s easier to get started with such a business and you need much less training. Such sellers basically participate in pricing wars all day, but other than that, the work is pretty straightforward.

The second kind of seller is invested in building his own brand. These sellers manufacture their own products and create new listings

SOME FUN AND NOT-SO-FUN FACTS ABOUT SELLING ON AMAZON:

1. You do earn money while you sleep, but a lot less than you do when you’re up, simply because, surprise, surprise, most of your potential buyers are sleeping as well. Sales typically rise as the day progresses, peaking during early evening hours, then slower as the day winds down and people retire for the night.

2. Amazon raises their fees for 4Q (fourth quarter), in time for the holiday peak sales season. It’s upsetting for sellers, but also understandable, considering that Amazon hires many seasonal workers to accommodate the explosion of sales.

3. Returns hurt sellers more than you can imagine. Unlike when you return an item you bought in a store, where the store owner returns your money and can later sell the product to another customer, Amazon sellers don’t get back the sell price from the return, because Amazon holds onto a certain amount of each sale (even if it’s returned). Also, many damages occur during shipping, rendering the product unfit to be sold again as brand new. Think twice before ordering something you’re fairly certain you’re going to return.

4. Ranking is the name of the game when it comes to selling on Amazon. You need your listing to rank well in order to see a high volume of sales. At the same time, you need a high volume of sales in order to rank well. Sounds tricky? Maybe, but it really isn’t very different from any other business that’s just starting out. New businesses spend money on ads or offer discounted introductory prices. Similarly, Amazon sellers invest funds in a product launch, either with sponsored ads or by offering a great buy, in order to generate that high volume of sales and kick off a good ranking.

5. Branding offers great opportunities to sellers. It’s worth investing in getting your brand trademarked. In addition to protecting your product from fraudulent sellers, you get to take advantage of the many features that are available only to branded products.

to add to the Amazon catalog. They spend several million hours researching products, corresponding with factories, creating something from nothing.

Call me a glutton for punishment; that’s the route I took.

I DIDN’T REALIZE THAT…

It takes so much time. And energy. And nerves. It’s a slow process and there are many bumps along the way. Maybe I shouldn’t be saying this, so as not to turn off wannabe sellers, but I always ask myself, had I known what it would take, would I have done it? It’s really hard to answer.

MOVING ALONG, THE NEXT STEP IS…

Closing your eyes, davening hard, and jumping in.

We went through several rounds of samples before finalizing our first product. I was literally shaking when we sent the deposit for our first order. It’s scary. Even if you do everything right, there are no guarantees. You need tremendous siyata d’Shmaya to succeed in this space. Davening is a crucial step in this process, before and after every step you take.

When our order was in production, we worked with a forwarding company to set up our shipment from China to an Amazon fulfillment center. There are a lot of technical details and choices involved, and we learned about each one as they came up.

Meanwhile, I spent a lot of time working on my listing. A lot of time should be spent working on a listing. It’s your first and most important step for attracting sales. Sellers should invest in top notch photography and graphics, and a lot of time and thought should be devoted to writing the listing. I learned what it takes to write a strong listing title, I learned the science of keywords and algorithms. Many sellers outsource this work to

professional writers, but this is a mistake. As professional as a writer may be, nobody knows or cares about your product as much as you do, and the seller alone is the most qualified for this job. You can have an editor review it when you’re done, but you’re the one who should collect keywords and describe your product the way it will be best described.

MY BIGGEST MISTAKE…

Scaling. My first order was too small — we were out of stock before we blinked. My second order was too big — we were overstocked and had to pay tremendous storage fees, eventually removing a lot of the inventory, which was a huge loss as well. It’s hard to judge the projection of sales, and there’s bound to be a learning curve. But if you’re following a specific strategy, you should be able to predict a ballpark sales figure, and set your order quantities accordingly.

THE BEST DECISION I MADE…

Keeping the whole venture a secret until it was actually up and running. The pressure of having everyone ask me all the time how it was going would’ve killed me.

THE CRAZIEST THING THAT HAPPENED...

After approving samples and running an inspection on production, there was a huge mistake with one of our products, and it generated many negative reviews to our listing. How did this mistake happen? Our vendor decided, at the last minute, to change a detail of the product, based on a different customer’s request. They didn’t bother consulting with us to find out if we wanted this change, and we were left to deal with irate customers and a huge number of returns.

AN IMPORTANT THING TO KEEP IN MIND...

Amazon and its sellers are partners. You need to work hand in hand to succeed. Although their rules and decisions often make sellers’ lives miserable, ultimately, you need each other; Your success is their success, and if you play by the rules, both of you stand to gain.

I WISH I WOULD HAVE KNOWN…

How emotionally draining this business is. There are no set hours, and every second that passes, you may have made a sale, or not. It’s easy to fall into a habit of obsessively checking sales, best seller rankings, and how the competition is doing. Of course you need to stay on top of things, but if you let it become an obsession, it could make you sick. You need to learn how to shut off and focus on other things in your life. Otherwise, you could easily become consumed by your business and constantly preoccupied with your Amazon activities.

WHAT MY DAY LOOKS LIKE NOW…

Every day looks different. Many days truly are passive, with a system set up and only minimal oversight required. Then there are some super intense days — for example, during a product launch. Also, a lot of the work happens at night, because there’s a twelve-hour time difference between New York and China, and if you want to conduct an efficient discussion with your vendor, you’ll find yourself emailing back and forth at 11:00, 12:00, 1:00 at night.

WHAT I TELL PEOPLE STARTING OUT…

Samples are vitally important. Don’t hesitate to request as many samples as it takes before you’re 100% satisfied with the results, and insist on seeing a final sample before production, even if it causes a delay. Check for every potential problem and make sure your product is absolutely perfect. Reviews carry a lot of weight on Amazon, and if you want your product to be rated highly, it has to be a great product.

At the same time, you have to know when to let go. Better done than perfect. Do your best, but there comes a point when you have to conclude that you’ve done all reasonable hishtadlus, and now it’s time to surrender to Hashem’s will.

THE AMAZON SELLER’S TO MANUFACTURING

IT’S A WHOLE PRODUCTION

ESTHER ADLER

Flip over any package, and somewhere near the barcode, you’ll find the words Made in China. Sometimes, when a product is feeling a bit cockier, the words will be Product of PRC, which is a fancier term but means the exact same thing.

No matter what you’re reading in the news, China remains The World’s Factory, yielding 28.7% of the Global Manufacturing Output. You may debate the quality of Chinese goods, but you can’t debate the hard fact: it’s cheaper to manufacture almost anything in China.

When I started my business, I became part of this colossal machine, adding Chinese names to my contact list. I learned all about the manufacturing process, I learned the ins and outs of importing goods from China, and I learned to put up with a holiday schedule that dominates this business.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO DO BUSINESS WITH CHINA?

I always wondered how an entrepreneur establishes relationships with Chinese suppliers. Do you have to travel to the Far East to find factories and create products? Do you need an agent working on your behalf to conduct business deals and oversee operations?

Sometimes traveling is helpful and maybe even necessary. And for some businesses, hiring an agent to act as a liaison between your company and various factories is a great option as well. I didn’t do any of that, though. For a new business starting out, it’s fairly easy to conduct business with China without stepping away from your desk. The path is simple and accessible to anyone. It’s called Alibaba.

Alibaba is an online marketplace where virtually all Chinese factories have a presence. Categories range from toys to electrical equipment, furniture to kitchen supplies, gardening tools to medical devices, fashion to craft supplies to sports equipment to home décor, and so on.

But really, that’s step two. Step one is figuring out what exactly you want to manufacture, and why.

Open Sun. - Fri.

Some people have an idea to open a certain type of store: Children’s clothing, appliances, housewares… They know exactly what kind of products they’re looking to source. I didn’t, though. I knew I wanted to sell on Amazon, but I had no idea what to actually sell. So my first step was researching hundreds of items and determining which space I wanted to enter.

I spent a lot of time studying items on Amazon. There’s a whole science behind choosing a product to sell, and it took a few months before I made the crucial choice. I did contact some factories on Alibaba during this time, because I needed to have a general idea of costs in order to settle on a product.

Once I knew what I wanted to sell, I communicated with several suppliers on Alibaba, comparing quotes and getting a sense of which factory I would feel most comfortable doing business with.

HOW DOES COMMUNICATION ON ALIBABA LOOK?

If you start SEARCHING FOR SUPPLIERS on Alibaba, you’re going to get a lot of results, and the choices may confuse you. Before anything, you’ll want to narrow down the options so that you only see the listings from suppliers who are verified by Alibaba and are enrolled in Trade Assurance. You can also see how many years each factory has been in business, as well as their order volume.

I checked out individual sellers’ pages and websites, exploring each factory’s product line to see if they carry a product similar to what I was seeking. I learned to disregard the prices listed; they are nothing more than a reference point.

I started contacting sellers. In my email, I introduced myself and described the product I was looking to manufacture. I provided as many product details as possible. I also supplied my email address and asked my contacts to email me so we could communicate more efficiently off the Alibaba platform.

In no time, I was flooded with responses. Carefully, I compared the responses and identified the more promising leads. Over time, you develop a sense for finding the most reputable factories.

After that, I started engaging in NEGOTIATIONS

Negotiating with suppliers is an art. There’s always room for negotiation, but you need to be both creative and flexible with your negotiations. Try to come up with ideas for how to bring pricing down. For example, you may choose a cheaper packaging option. Attractive packaging is not that important on Amazon, since it isn’t a brick and mortar store. But whatever you do, do not compromise on product quality.

Pricing, I learned, is almost everything. If a factory offers a price that’s significantly lower than all other suppliers, that made me a little wary. Is the quality as good as the other offers I got? Is the factory trustworthy?

The next stage was SAMPLES. It’s okay to request samples from more than one factory, to compare the quality. You’ll sometimes be asked to pay for shipping, and then if you end up ordering from that factory, the sample fee will be deducted from your order total. Even if it costs you some money, you can’t skip this step.

Settling on a factory took some time. Once I made the decision, we worked together on creating a prototype and figuring out all packaging details. Finally, with a perfect sample in my hands, I sent a deposit and proceeded to production.

PRODUCTION time varies, often taking up to 30 days. During this time, I worked on creating my listing and dealt with a forwarding company to arrange all the details of my shipment.

When production was done, I scheduled an inspection. It’s important to tell your hired inspector exactly what to look for, then analyze the inspection report carefully to make sure there are no serious problems with the order.

Once my goods were on the water (industry lingo for “actually on a boat that is traveling across the ocean right now”), I got ready to launch.

It was an incredible feeling. I did it. I manufactured my own product. I’d joined the global market.

Now it was time to sell.

I WANT TO BECOME AN AMAZON SELLER. BUT WHAT EXACTLY SHOULD I SELL?

This is the most important question to ask yourself, and you can’t go looking for suppliers before you have a clear answer. Here are some points to keep in mind during the product research stage.

1. Rather than looking for a product to sell, look for a product line. You’re going to invest a lot of time, effort and money in your first product. You’re going to cultivate a relationship with a supplier. You’re going to learn the rules and regulations surrounding your product. You’re going to brand your name and add it to Amazon’s Brand Registry. Basically, you’re going to be living and breathing this product for the foreseeable future. If you’re doing all that, it only makes sense to lay the groundwork for future products so you don’t have to go through the entire process all over again. Besides, with a professional digital storefront featuring a full product line, satisfied customers will return to buy from you when they’re looking for related products.

2. Analyze what makes the best-selling listing of this product stand out among the many other similar listings. Make your product at least as good as that one, in terms of quality, features, and usability. Then, make it better. Add a feature or include a bonus product to attract buyers.

3. Passion isn’t everything. If you enjoy taking pictures, it doesn’t mean you should be selling cameras. You can grow passionate about any product once you’ve learned all about it. It’s a lot more important to assess demand for a product than to love the product you’re selling.

4. Know which selling strategy you’re going to follow, and learn what criteria a product has to meet to align with your strategy. Narrow down your choices accordingly.

5. Never compromise on quality. Naturally, you’ll want to get the best price per unit when purchasing your goods, but if saving several thousand dollars is going to cause you a large return volume or a flood of negative reviews, the savings aren’t worth it.

6. Avoid products that break easily or have a high risk of malfunctioning.

RUCHY REESE

When I was nine years old, I found $20 on the bottom of a swimming pool and felt like a millionaire. I was rolling in riches, for sure!

But unlike me in my nine-year-old naivete, there are kids out there who consider $20 to be chump change. Let’s meet some mini millionaires and how they came upon their stash of cash.

THE MONEY MO MADE

Some kids are different. And that’s not a bad thing. In fact, their quirkiness might just one day work in their favor. Take Moziah Bridges, for instance. Even as a young child, he loved the formal look, and would wear three-piece suits to the playground. But he had one problem: Moziah was disappointed that he couldn’t find just the right bow tie to complement his suits. So what did he do? He learned to sew! Once his grandmother had taught him his way around the sewing machine, Moziah set out to make his mark on the market.

With a little help from his mother, Mo’s Bows was born!

Moziah opened his business selling both bows and neckties at only nine years old. He’s now 21 and has a net worth of $5 million dollars. Not bad for a kid who just wanted a bow tie!

FROM THE BOTTOM UP

Brennan Agranoff was a little older than Mo when he got his start in the fashion industry. Brennan opened his company Hoopswagg in his junior year of high school. He’d noticed that local sports teams had individualized uniforms — but they all wore the same type of Nike socks.

“What if socks could be a reflection of a team, too?” he thought. To that end, Brennan spent six months researching what it takes to custom print on fabric. Then he approached his parents and asked them for seed money and the use of their garage. Impressed with his drive, his parents gave him a $3,000 loan and allowed him to move machinery into their garage and print personalized socks. Five years after starting his business, Agranoff moved from that humble garage to a 1,500 square foot building where he ships more than a 100 orders a day. His annual revenue is in the seven digits. Who would thunk that socks could be so successful?

SWEET SUCCESS

Being told “no” might not feel good, but it certainly isn’t a bad thing. If anything, it makes one consider other options. That’s what happened to seven-year-old Alina Morse when her parents told her they didn’t want her to eat a lollipop offered to her by a bank teller for fear of it harming her teeth.

“Why can’t we make a lollipop that’s actually good for your teeth?” young Alina questioned. Encouraged by her parents to pursue her passion, Alina dedicated a few years to learning how to make sugar-free candy that tastes good, and actively testing out the knowledge she gained in the kitchen. Eventually, she nailed the recipes and earned herself a following. Though she was only thirteen when she founded the Zolli Candy company in 2018, her “clean teeth pops” earned her a sweet reward: $6 million that year alone. Alina’s candies are now in more than 24,000 stores, including big box chains such as Walmart and Rite Aid.

HER AND THE BEES

It was a sting that started it all.

Little Mikaila Ulmer was just four years old when she had the misfortune of getting stung by a bee — twice in one week. While she hated the experience, it made her stop and think of bees, learn more about them, and grow to appreciate their place in this world. Around that same time, her parents urged her to enter a few kiddie contests, helping her entrepreneurial spirit come to life. One of those contests was for best-tasting lem-

Though younger in age than the amount of fingers on one hand, Mikaila decided to create her own specialty drink based on her grandmother’s recipe for flaxseed lemonade, using honey as a substitute for sugar. After winning the contest, her brand of honey-sweetened drinks, Me & the Bees, was born. Mikaila’s great-tasting lemonade ended up scoring her an $11 million deal with Whole Foods. Not bad for a bee sting!

DOUGH FROM THE JAM

It seems grandmothers’ recipes come in quite in handy for many young entrepreneurs. Fraser Doherty was a mere fourteen years old when he began playing around with his grandma’s jam recipe, which called for 100% fresh fruit. Once he got it down pat, he approached a major U.K. supermarket chain with his healthy spread and landed a deal, making him the record-holder for youngest supplier to a U.K. store. Since then, he’s sold millions of jars of jam, earning him the nickname “Jam Boy.”

The coolest part of the whole story is that Jam Boy gives back, organizing free tea parties for lonely elderly people around the U.K. where they can enjoy a drink with jam and bread, as well as the company of others their age.

THE GOOD IDEA THAT STUCK

Fourteen-year-old Sarah Buckles loved the look of a decorated locker, but she loathed the job of scraping off adhesive residue when it came time to take down her decorations. Lucky for her, the solution was at home: her dad.

Mr. Buckles was a highranking employee at the MagnaCard company, which manufactures magnetic business products. That made him the perfect person to approach.

Sarah asked if he could talk to his boss about manufacturing magnetic wallpaper for school lockers. The company loved the idea and helped her get set up in business. Sarah Buckles designed a bunch of different options for school-goers who wanted to stickand-style their lockers — no mess involved. Then she patented her idea.

Sarah’s products went on to sell in Target and Staples, among other stores, making her a millionaire within a year.

WAVES OF COMMUNICATION

Eleven-year-old Richie Stachowski was having a blast exploring the underwater world of Hawaii, where his family was vacationing. He had only one issue: He couldn’t talk about the wonders he was witnessing while underwater. “There’s gotta be a way to communicate,” he thought. But nothing had been invented yet. So Rich decided to solve that problem. He set out to learn about underwater acoustics and developed a conical device that enables one to communicate with nearby swimmers. Called the Water Talkie, the rights to manufacture this cool device were bought two years later by a toy company, allowing the boy to live up to his name: Rich.

IN CONTRAST

All of the mini millionaires mentioned so far share several common traits: the desire to succeed, the will to work hard, and family backing. Without any of those ingredients, it’s not likely that the kids would have made their millions.

So what happens when you take out, say, the will to work hard? It’s not always so pretty when kids come into cash for free....

American law has a pretty high minimum age for lottery players, but the United Kingdom has looser rules, enabling sixteen-yearold Callie Rogers to score a 1.8 million pound win in 2003.

Not having worked for the winnings, Callie didn’t have a strong appreciation for the value of money. She went on an absurd spending spree, treating herself to multiple expensive cars, tons of clothing, and other un healthy extras. Ten years later she was down to 2,000 in the bank. Easy come, easy go.

A DIY sukkah decoration series

Chava Schwartz

It’s summertime, the perfect season to take on a fun and creative project. This painting project will teach you many painting skills while showing you how to create beautiful artwork for your sukkah.

Over these eight weeks, we will guide you on how to complete a beautiful, hand-painted shivas haminim sukkah decoration. Each of the shivas haminim will get a separate painting as part of this series, and the last week of instructions will be reserved for writing the names of the shivas haminim onto the completed paintings.

The paintings will be taught in a step-bystep manner so everyone can join and enjoy. You do not need to be an artist to create this masterpiece.

Happy painting!

WEEK 7

Tamar | Dates

At last, we’ve gotten to the last of the shivas haminim. This seventh picture will feature tamar, or dates. STEP 1

Mix blue and white to create a light blue. Starting on top of the canvas, paint the entire background with a back-and-forth motion. Add more white as you move lower down on the canvas.

STEP 2

On the right side of the canvas, use brown paint to sketch the trunk of the palm tree. Sketch a long, narrow triangle with the tip curving a bit to the left.

Draw another large palm tree trunk on the left of the canvas. Angle this trunk to the right.

Draw a smaller palm tree trunk in the center of the canvas. Angle this one to the left.

STEP 3

Add some black to your brown paint to darken it. Use this dark brown to fill the palm tree trunks.

STEP 4

While the brown paint is still wet, add some thin horizontal white streaks to each trunk.

STEP 5

Starting at the tip of each trunk, use green paint to draw curved lines angled downward to create the center of the leaves. Sketch about six to eight leaves per tree. The leaves may overlap.

STEP 6

Extending from beneath each leaf, paint small green lines angled downward. Add some white over some of the small lines to highlight them.

STEP 7

In the center of the palm tree, where the leaves and trunk meet, use yellow ocher paint to draw small dots. These are the dates.

STEP 8

Proudly sign your name!

Until next time, Chava

The Hidden Language of Anxiety

Recognize

People are quite adept at avoiding confronting painful or troubling aspects of life — being in ‘denial’, as it’s commonly referred to. Sometimes, this avoidance tactic is glaringly obvious, like a stubborn refusal to address a particular issue, or perhaps the numbing of feelings through overeating or other distractive (often destructive), addictive habits and behaviors. However, there are more obscure forms of denial that often go unnoticed.

Denial is a defense mechanism that can take many forms, some of which are more subtle than others. One of the most difficult to spot is anxiety. While there are many legitimate reasons to be anxious, we may sometimes use anxiety as a shield to avoid confronting painful memories. In this way, our anxiety becomes less about genuine concern and more about avoidance and denial.

For example, someone who has experienced a traumatic event may become anxious in situations that remind them of the event. This anxiety can be so overwhelming that the person may avoid said circumstances altogether. In doing so, they are essentially denying the reality of the event and its impact on their life. While this may provide temporary relief, it can ultimately prevent the

person from healing and moving on.

Someone who is constantly worried about their health may be doing so because they are afraid of dying. However, they may also be using their health anxiety as a way to avoid dealing with other problems in their life, such as a difficult relationship or a stressful job.

The line between genuine worry and anxietyas-denial can be incredibly blurry. It may take quite a while to recognize when someone (or our very own self) is excessively worried about money, relationships, reputation, or health -- not because these things are of vital concern, but be-

cause they represent a distraction from confronting unresolved aspects of their life.

Behind this incessant worrying may lie a refusal to acknowledge a specific sadness. We worry obsessively as an alternative to facing our past. We focus on particularly unsettling concerns, effectively negating some more deeply troubling thoughts to the sidelines of our consciousness.

One way to break this cycle of ‘displacementworry’ might be to pose a perhaps overwhelming (though not hostile) question to ourselves: If I didn’t have this particular worry about _________ (fill in the blank), what else would I have to confront?

Answering this question may elicit feelings of confusion, introspection, and sadness. We may have to grapple with an unusual concept: that perhaps there isn’t that much to worry about after all, but there is a beating heart of guilt or regret that needs to be acknowledged. These once-avoided feelings of sadness could plausibly stand in place of our relentless worrying.

Such a revelation may sound daunting, but it carries with it a wide silver lining of hope. The path to a less worrisome existence opens up once we find the bravery to grieve our past. The process may unravel an underpinning of sadness, but ultimately it is a journey towards acceptance and inner peace.

If you are concerned that you or someone you know may be using anxiety as a way to avoid dealing with other problems, it would be beneficial to seek professional help. A therapist or healer can help you to identify the underlying issues that are causing your anxiety and develop healthy coping mechanisms.

Paper tape, duct tape, masking tape, packing tape, double-sided tape, electrical tape, surgical tape… the rolls roll on and on! Let’s take a deeper look at adhesive tape, which bonds so many items in our lives.

ADHESIVES HAVE BEEN STICKING AROUND FOR A WHILE…

1845

ADHESIVE TAPE: CAN YOU PATCH ME UP, DOC?

Modern-day tape made its first appearance in a doctor’s office. Looking to create an adhesive bandage for his patients, surgeon Horace Day created the earliest version of this packing tape.

1925

MASKING

TAPE: HELPING PAINT THOSE CARS

When Richard Drew noticed how difficult it was for auto body shop painters to create clean dividing lines on twocolored paint jobs, he came up with paper tape. Soon, perfectly painted cars were driving the roads.

1930

SCOTCH TAPE: FOR DANISHES, MEAT, AND CUCUMBERS

Five years after his success with paper tape, Richard Drew came up with a new twist. Seeking a practical way to seal food wrap, he designed the world’s first transparent waterproof tape, to the delight of bakers, grocers, and meat packers. When the tape hit the general market, people were thrilled with this new means for fixing books, ripped window shades, and torn currency.

1943

DUCT TAPE:

ONE MOTHER’S CONCERN Vesta Stoudt, a mother of two US troops fighting on the front during World War II, worked at an ammunition factory. She came up with the idea of water-resistant tape made of fabric to replace poor packaging methods used for grenade launcher cartridges. When her supervisors were skeptical, she turned to President Roosevelt with a hand-drawn sketch. Soon, Johnson & Johnson was commissioned to create the sturdy tape, and Stoudt remains the mother of duct tape.

Red tape was used to bind legal documents in England, which eventually gave birth to the expression “cutting through red tape.”

Long before packing tape as we know it was invented, the Romans and Greeks discovered materials that could be used as adhesives, including egg whites, bones, blood, milk, and hide. In China, they used cattle and fish derivatives.
THE FIRST TAPE DISPENSER WITH A BUILT-IN BLADE WAS INVENTED IN 1932.
The amount of duct tape sold each year could stretch to the moon and back.

TAPE IN COMMERCE

While China is the leading producer of tape globally, there is plenty of tape manufactured on the home front, too. Scotch tape by 3M is made in St. Paul, Minnesota.

915 billion meters of plastic packaging tape are used per year globally.

The demand for tape mounted with the increase of e-commerce sales. Think of all those boxes sealed with tape before being shipped to your door!

BESIDES SEALING BOXES OR FIXING RIPPED BOOKS, WHAT CAN TAPE BE USED FOR? HERE ARE SEVERAL UNCONVENTIONAL WAYS TO USE TAPE:

If the most common time you notice a torn hem is on Rosh Chodesh, this one is for you! Use tape for a great temporary hem.

Ironically, one way to get rid of stubborn tape residue is… with tape! Place heavy duty tape over sticky scum and rub for a few seconds. When you peel away the tape, the residue will peel off along with it. Masking tape works best.

Heavy duty tape on the bottom of chair or table legs can protect your floors from scratches.

Wires in the way? Secure cords to the floor or wall with a piece of tape. Electrical tape is preferred, but masking tape could work, too.

If you’re the crafty type, the uses for tape are endless. From window art to tape sculptures to handmade stencils, anything sticks!

Tape can turn a boring Sunday into a funday! Taped mazes on the floor make great races. Or delight your little ones with taped “roads” for their cars.

T. Gestetner
THE TERM “DUCT TAPE” WAS COINED IN THE 1950S, WHEN THE TAPE BECAME A POPULAR WAY TO WRAP AIR DUCTS.

SO… WHO ARE YOU?

I AM RICHARD THE FEA…

THE FEA?

RECAP: THE BANDITS ATTACK. YOSEF COLLAPSES A BALCONY LEDGE ON THEIR HEADS, KNOCKING THEM OUT.

THE… THE FRIENDLY! YES, RICHARD THE FRIENDLY! I AM BUT A COMMONER, AS ART THYSELF, AND BY NO MEANS ART I THE SOVEREIGN RULER OF A GREAT NATION, TRAVELING IN DISGUISE!

…?

NICE TO MEET YOU, RICHIE!

WHERE ARE YOU HEADED, MR. THE FRIENDLY?

FORSOOTH, I KNOW NOT. AT PRESENT I MERELY WANDER, HITHER AND THITHER AND YON, INTO THE UNKNOWN.

GREAT. WE’RE LOST, TOO.

I AM NOT LOST! I’M WANDERING!

WELL, MAYBE WE’LL WANDER TOGETHER FOR A BIT.

YOSEF, ARE YOU SURE?

MOST ASSUREDLY! IT WOULD BE AN HONOR!

VERILY. AND YET — WE HAVE NO HORSES…

SURE I’M SURE! C’MON, LET’S RIDE OFF INTO THE SUNSET!
