SPEEDY DELIVERY

(Re: Riding High, Issue 352) Thank you for your article about the motorcycle service. What an innovative concept! Just a day after I read about Mr. Chmedi, I needed to get a package across town, so I decided to give this service a try. My package arrived in just minutes! Thank you for keeping a finger on the pulse of the community for us. M.U.

(Re: Things That Go Round, Issue 352) I was really happy to see you tackle the safety issue of the ubiquitous Segways, hoverboards, and other motorized scooters and bikes. I constantly see children in my neighborhood zooming by at speeds that are unsafe for them and unsafe for the pedestrians in their paths, and on top of all that, they are rarely properly protected. I hope that parents will heed the safety awareness the article brings and will train their children to use their riding toys in a safe and responsible manner. I am also wondering whether I am the only “mean mother” who has thus far banned these from my children’s possession. My husband, as an adult, once had a riding accident with a motorbike, and I just don’t know how I can, in good conscience, allow my kids to operate electrical riding machines. Ruchie T. RE: I TALKED FOR A QUARTER

(Inbox, Issue 352) Goldie Lebron’s letter in last week’s issue brought a smile to my face. I, too, remember those bonus quarters bouncing back, as well as the grating command to “please deposit another 25 cents” when my time was up. Another lovely memory is the public phones in our school buildings. Back in the day, we didn’t have to wait for the secretary’s permission to call home. All we needed was a quarter and access to one of the public phones along the school’s hallways (providing that our turn came before the bell rang, announcing the end of recess). Dating Myself

SWEET MAIL MEMORIES

(Re: What the Have-Not Had, Issue 351) Reading about the camp letters Hindy Kviat so fondly remembers evoked such sweet memories. I inherited my love of letter-writing from a dear aunt and have been doing it ever since I was able to form letters with a pencil. My aunt Bronia, a”h, never let an occasion slip by without a card. Be it a birthday, anniversary, graduation or condolence, the appropriate sentiment worded on the front of the card would be joined by a detailed, heartfelt message handwritten around the entire inner perimeter of the card. When my children were campers, they knew they could count on me for weekly letters, and I have continued that tradition with my einiklach. My writing drawer contains various cards, notes, stationery and stamps, and I use them throughout the summer. I’m not sure who gets greater pleasure — the sender or the receiver of a letter! Happy writing. R.S.

CHAPTER

FOUR

Recap: Don Sebastian is summoned and secluded with the old friar in a room, where the old man suddenly straightens up and reveals himself as Gonzalo, who’d come to help Sebastian escape. Gonzalo gives him instructions on how he would escape.

“D

o you think he’s gone away, Corporal?” asked the taller of the guards. The other guard just kept dabbing with his sleeve at the sweat that was gathering on his forehead. He didn’t particularly care if the old friar returned or not. “He’ll be back,” said the corporal. “He’s just gone out to blow off some steam. The man is mad as a bat, and he’s determined to wring a confession out of Dominguez. I could have told him he would not have an easy time of it. He won’t leave here until he does it. I’ll lay you a wager that he’ll be back. And very soon.” The guards laughed and declined to accept the wager. And indeed, not more than ten minutes later, the old friar was back, pounding the ground with his staff and snorting and muttering to himself. One of the guards went to close the gate behind him, but the old friar stamped on the ground and brandished his stick at the guard. The guard backed away and resumed his position near the entrance to the passageway. The old friar wandered about the courtyard, his back deeply bent and the cowl of his cassock hanging over his head so that he looked more like a giant brown beetle than a man. Every once in a while, he looked up at the sky and let loose such a bloodcurdling howl that the corporal and the guards shrank back into the shadows. Finally, a certain sense of serenity seemed to descend on the troubled hermit, and he began to hum tonelessly as he ambled around the courtyard. He glanced for a

moment at the passageway from which he had emerged. Then he apparently thought better of it. Instead of returning to his prisoner, he mounted his donkey, rode out into the open and turned in the direction of the city. “What do you think now, Corporal?” asked the tall guard. “Do you think he’s coming back, or have we seen the last of this madman?” The corporal shook his head and smiled. “We really shouldn’t call him a madman, muchachos. Do you think you would be any different if you lived the life of a holy hermit and never uttered a word unless it was in the service of the Lord? He is obviously not of this world, but he is a holy man, and we must respect him. Will he come back? Absolutely! Does anyone want to lay a wager?” No one did, and minutes later, the old friar was back. He dismounted, and whistling merrily, he disappeared back into the passageway. The door closed behind him, and the guards resumed their positions. The old friar had been away for quite a while, and when he opened the door to the interrogation room, he saw that Sebastian was desperately worried. “Calm yourself, Don Sebastian,” he said. “It goes well. Now we must work quickly.” From an inside pocket, he produced a vial of a pasty substance and a handful of brittle white hairs. “Here, bend over and bring your face down here. This cream will make your skin look like aged parchment, like mine, and the hairs will stay pasted to it so that you will have a beard that resembles mine. Now some coal tar on your front teeth will make it seem that

YOUR VOICE PUBLIC ALERT

When I came across a mound of fly eggs in a pan of chopped meat, I felt the urge to send this warning to prevent fellow Yidden from unwittingly transgressing, especially since now, during summertime, we share the air with countless insects buzzing about. Based on my recollection of a shiur many years ago, flies will lay their eggs on proteins. Since then, I’ve identified the almost sawdust-like particles in plates of tuna, meat, etc., that have been left exposed even for short periods of time. It was only with this knowledge (and the sight of the perpetrator fleeing the scene) that I was able to spot a little mound of fly eggs in my meat mixture. It can easily be missed if you are not looking out for it, and therefore, I wanted to remind my fellow readers not to leave any protein uncovered, and to look out for any eggs if they do. P.F.

“No, Reb Nosson! You didn’t fail in your nisayon. You never began your nisayon!” But Nosson said nothing. He merely put his finger to his lips to indicate that he could not speak. While they were standing there, trying to make sense of what was going on, the front door opened, and in walked a neighbor. “Can I borrow your ax?” he asked. Nosson was shocked by this breach in the elevated cocoon that he had cushioned himself in. He wanted the visitor out. Impulsively, he declared, “I don’t have an ax here. Maybe another time…” The neighbor left, and Nosson’s wife and children, who now realized that everything was okay, left as well. For the next few hours, Nosson remained in his room, alone. Finally, the sun began to set. Nosson was overcome with relief. He had managed to accomplish the unattainable! Just then, he noticed the edge of an ax poking out from under his bed. What is this doing here?! he wondered in frustration. The ax was never in his room! But today, its very existence doomed him. In tears, he ran to Reb Elimelech and repeated the events of the day. “Rebbe! I didn’t manage to withstand the nisayon! I failed…” Reb Elimelech smiled and calmed his chassid. “No, Reb Nosson! You didn’t fail in your nisayon. You never began your nisayon! This isn’t what Hashem wants from you, and this isn’t the way to attain Olam Haba. Hashem does not want you to sit secluded in your room, learning all day, and refraining from sheker. That’s no big deal! What Hashem wants from us Yidden is to mingle with others, go about our business, and still not tell any falsehood — that’s the way to Olam Haba!” *Not his real name. * * * * * In our lives, too, our tafkid is to live among others, along with the materialism and all it entails, and elevate it to a spiritual level. We are meant to go about our daily lives, doing whatever the world demands of us, and still withstand the challenges that come our way. That is how we can fulfill ratzon Hashem. The generation of the Midbar was being taught this same message, says Reb Yosef Leib Nendik, Mashgiach of Yeshivas Radin. True, in the Midbar, they were surrounded by open hashgachah and living on an elevated plane. That is why they wanted to check out Eretz Yisroel — to make sure they would be able to continue to live a spiritual existence, just as they had during their travels. But this was a mistake. Our Creator would not have created us as physical beings if all He desired was for us to live in pure spirituality. He specifically created us as mortal humans, hoping we would push above our physicality and elevate ourselves to a mode of ruchnius through it. That was a goal that could be accomplished only in Eretz Yisroel — and not in the Midbar. Thus, the Yidden’s request to send Meraglim was lacking simply because they did not understand this. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

Did You Know? The day that the Meraglim passed away — 7 Elul, or 17 Elul according to other opinions — is observed as a voluntary fast day by tzaddikim. It is marked as a sad day because even though the Meraglim ostensibly did teshuvah, it was not accepted Above.

300K+ Low-Income Households Expected To Benefit From State Utility Assistance

Infant Rocker Deaths Prompt Urgent Call To Place Babies To Sleep on Flat Surfaces Only

Governor Kathy Hochul had good news last week for lowincome families with overdue utility bills: She promised that $567 million in state aid is on its way to be issued to qualified New York residents as a one-time credit by mid-summer. The program will leverage $250 million in funding from the state’s 2023 enacted budget to help those currently enrolled in the state’s Energy Affordability Program, or who enroll in the program by December 31. Hochul hailed it as a major step to help vulnerable New Yorkers. “It’s unacceptable that far too many New Yorkers are at risk of having their lights shut off for failure to pay their utility bills due to financial problems caused by the pandemic,” said the governor. More than 327,000 households in New York are expected to benefit from the program, which will also include an estimated $100 million in funding from the State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance’s Emergency Rental Assistance Program. “The pandemic placed many families in insecure financial situations, forcing so many low- to no-income families to make painful decisions about whether to pay their utility bills or put food in their children’s stomachs,” said Lieutenant Governor Antonio Delgado. “Today’s announcement will provide low-income customers with the electric and gas arrears relief they need to help get them back on their feet.” For more information about the Energy Affordability Program, contact the Energy Affordability Team at 1-866-3051915.

The accidental deaths of multiple infants have prompted a somber warning, advising parents and caregivers never to allow their babies to sleep on anything other than a firm, flat surface. A June 14th statement issued by the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission noted that it was investigating several infant deaths associated with Fisher-Price and Kids2 baby rockers. The CPSC said that it will “aggressively enforce” a new rule going into effect on June 23 that will mandate that infant sleeping products have an incline of ten degrees or less, a standard already in effect for cribs, bassinets and play yards. The agency also reminded parents and caregivers to remove blankets, pillows and other items from any baby sleep areas and urged them never to leave infants in rockers, gliders, soothers or swings without proper safety restraints and supervision. Another statement released by the CPSC on the same day reported that it has received reports of thirteen infants who died in Fisher-Price rockers over the past three years. CPSC commissioner Richard Trumka noted that a previous recall issued in 2019 for Fisher-Price Rock ‘n Play seats involved “a staggering number of infant deaths.” Trumka blasted the federal gag rule that blocks the agency from issuing any warnings without receiving permission from the product’s maker, noting that the law created a two-month delay in releasing the most recent infant safety statement. “Congress must immediately repeal the gag rule,” wrote Trumka. “If CPSC cannot issue timely warnings, dangers will remain hidden in people’s homes.” Fisher-Price has sold more than 17 million rockers since the 1990s, reported NPR. According to the company, the deaths involved its Infantto-Toddler Rockers and Newborn-toToddler Rockers. Another reported death involved a Kids2 Bright Starts Disney Baby Minnie Mouse Starts and Smile Infant to Toddler Rocker. Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal called on both companies to recall the products in question, referring to them as “deadly rockers.” “With more than a dozen infant deaths linked to these dangerous products, it is clear they should be swiftly removed from the market and unsuspecting families’ homes,” tweeted Blumenthal.

Investigation Underway as Sanzer Shul Defaced With Swastikas The tranquility of Shabbos was shattered last week at the Sanzer shul on Suzanne Drive, when eight swastikas were discovered in various locations throughout the building. The incident at Congregation Shefa Chaim was reported to Chaverim on Sunday morning, who contacted the Town of Ramapo Police Department. Police officers and members of the Rockland County Sheriff’s Office’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation came to the shul and launched an investigation, taking photographs of the swastikas which were drawn in several places including the coatroom, on a door and underneath a coffee area. A piece of mail on a desk in the shul bore both a swastika and the words “Hail Hitler” [sic]. Chaverim volunteers have been following up on leads and reviewing surveillance footage of the building. “Security cameras are extremely important, especially in public places,” Chaverim coordinator Yossi Margaretten told The Monsey View. “Time and time again, we have seen that cameras are an effective crime-deterrent and can help police solve crimes.”

Catalytic Converter Thieves Nabbed in Chestnut Ridge Three men were arrested last week after raiding a local bus depot and attempting to steal catalytic converters from parked school buses. The Town of Ramapo Police Department said that it received a call in the pre-dawn hours of June 16 regarding a suspicious vehicle parked on Red Schoolhouse Road in Chestnut Ridge. Police found evidence at the scene that unknown individuals were in the midst of stealing catalytic converters from buses parked at the Chestnut Ridge Transportation Facility located near the New Jersey border. A perimeter search of the area turned up three suspects who were identified as 23-year-old Daniel Martinez and 22-year-old Christian Peralta, both of Yonkers; and 21-yearold Alberto Rodriguez of the Bronx, according to New City Patch. Police said that the trio had already removed catalytic converters from five buses and were in the process of cutting the mechanism — which is often made out of precious metals and has a high black market value — from a sixth bus. All three men were charged with auto stripping in the first degree, criminal mischief in the second degree, grand larceny in the third degree, and criminal possession of stolen property in the third degree, which are all felonies, as well as misdemeanor charges of conspiracy in the fifth degree and possession of burglar’s tools. The men were also charged with trespassing, as a violation, and after being arraigned in village court, were released on their own recognizance pending a future court date. Assisting the Ramapo Police Department in their search and apprehension of the suspects were the Ramapo Police K9 Unit, Rockland County Sheriff’s Department, Montvale Police Department, Park Ridge Police Department, Woodcliff Lake Police Department and the New York State Police. 148

C H A P T E R 15 RECAP: Things are getting progressively worse for Lenny Bergman. Rabbi Ginzburg happily tells Izzy that Zach has changed his mind and is willing to go to Poland. But Chaim Simcha looks ill and it doesn’t look like he is up to traveling.

“H

ow you doing? Rise and shine!” Chaim Simcha sat up in bed and blearily opened an eye. Izzy stood over him like some sort of overly cheerful drill sergeant, a grim pleasantness forcing itself into the room with him. Chaim Simcha squeezed his eye again as the light assaulted him. “Bleargh,” he groaned, coughing into his sleeve. “I’m really not feeling well. Got a fever of…” he stopped, trying to remember. “101.3,” Izzy supplied. “I spoke to Chana. She told me you tried to go to shul this morning.” “I’ve got to daven,” Chaim Simcha protested, rubbing his forehead with a grimace. “Yeah, well, everything is nidche for pikuach nefesh.” “Izzy, I’ve got a virus.” Chaim Simcha

scowled. “I’m not dying.” “I’m not talking about the virus,” Izzy answered wryly. “Chana was not happy that you’re pushing yourself so hard.” “Ha-ha.” Chaim Simcha coughed again, a nasty hacking that left him feeling lightheaded. This was the wrong time to be sick. No matter how many times he repeated gam zu l’tovah, it didn’t make him feel any better. He was barely learning anything, all his shul work had ground to a halt, and to top it all off, he should have booked tickets to Poland yesterday. That could be a big problem, too. Zach Ganz had been behaving a bit erratically. If Chaim Simcha kept him waiting too long, the politician might change his mind again and decide not to go. This, too, was ratzon Hashem. But it was hard to remember that sometimes. “You want to open those eyes, maybe?” Izzy continued. “I brought you some-

thing.” Chaim Simcha cracked his eyes open warily. Izzy held a brown paper bag before him like he was presenting the crown jewels. Chaim Simcha took it gingerly and peeked inside, then looked up with raised eyebrows. “A pizza bagel?” “That’s what I eat when I’m feeling sick,” Izzy said. “Gets me back on my feet in no time.” Chaim Simcha chuckled. “That can’t be scientific.” “Oh, sure. The cheese is a powerful anti-viral. Didn’t you know? Viruses are lactose-intolerant.” “I see.” Chaim Simcha was genuinely smiling now. Then his chest tightened and he coughed heavily. “Gevalt!” he muttered. A thought struck, and he looked at his brother curiously. “What do you mean, it gets you back on your feet? You’re never sick!” “Ki’mat never,” Izzy agreed. He pointed to the paper bag. “Obviously, it works.” “I can’t argue with that,” Chaim Simcha said, rolling his eyes. “You bring any coffee along with this miracle drug?” Izzy gave him an apologetic shrug. “Confiscated by the border patrol. Chana says you’re on a diet. It was all I could do to get you the pizza bagel.” “I’d have thought she’d be more meikel while I’m sick.” “She said this was being meikel. She was gonna make you soup.” “And?” Chaim Simcha asked, imagining a piping hot bowl of something delicious. “She makes incredible soups.” “Agreed,” Izzy said decisively. “But sick guys need carbs. And cheese. And sauce. That’s the Ginzburg way.” “That’s the Izzy way,” Chaim Simcha corrected. He took the pizza bagel from the bag. “Thanks. I’d better go wash.” He stood up, every muscle in his body complaining. He was also cold from the fever. It was time to load up on ibuprofen again. He hobbled to the door, shivering. He’d been hoping this would be quick, some sort of 24-hour flu. Or at least something he could manage while he flew to Poland. But he had to admit the truth: There was no way he was going to Poland anytime soon. “Izzy, do me a favor and call Zach,”

Chaim Simcha said. He sighed. “Let “We need to seize the opportunihim know there’s going to be a delay. ty,” Chaim Simcha said simply. It’s not perfect, but it’s some- back? No, sir, not for him. So why had he done it? thing.” June 22, 2022

Didn’t matter. It was done. Focus on the positive. This would be the trip of a lifetime, if he allowed it. Zach had been happy with the change of plans. In fact, Izzy thought Zach might have seemed a little pleased at the change. Izzy’s brother was a tzaddik and a gaon, no question. But maybe Zach thought him a little too intense to hang out with for a week straight in a foreign city. Izzy wasn’t exactly the vacation sort either. He hadn’t gone anywhere just to enjoy himself in ages. So this visit to Poland would be a first, and he was pretty excited. They’d hit Lodz, find the Rebbe’s old house, take some pictures for Chaim Simcha. Izzy had heard it was occupied by a non-Jewish family, but they apparently allowed visitors to tour the place for a small fee. Then there was the old shul. It would be nice to see how the original Lodz shtiebel compared to the new one. With Zach on board, Izzy was looking for tickets. But he was also working feverishly at the office, trying to get through as much as he could before leaving. There were deadlines to meet, things to hand it. It all had to happen now. Plus, he still had to tell his boss he was leaving. “Mr. Borden?” he called. Kenneth Borden Jr. was a senior member of the firm Izzy worked for. He was Izzy’s immediate superior, a brilliant attorney and a decent enough guy, if a bit condescending at times. That was hardly his fault, Izzy privately admitted. Kenneth Borden Sr. had built the firm from the ground up, but his son grew up in wealth and circumstance. A silverspoon complex probably came with the territory. “What’s up, Izzy?” Mr. Borden asked. “Sorry to bother you,” Izzy began. “I just wanted to let you know I’ll be out of town next week.” Kenny glanced at him sharply. “What for?” “There’s a… family artifact in Poland. From before the war. I’ll be making arrangements to get it over here.” He gestured to his computer screen. “I was just about to email you a formal notification, but I saw you walking by and figured I’ll mention it in person.” Kenny frowned. “You’re flying all the way to Poland for this? They can’t just ship it to you?” “No, sir. The Polish want an in-person ID.” Technically, it wasn’t Izzy’s ID they wanted, but that would take way too long to explain, Izzy thought. And it wasn’t Mr. Borden’s business, anyway, as long as he gave proper notice. Kenny was still frowning, though. “How long do you plan to be gone?” “A week. Maybe a little less.” With the exception of holidays, Izzy hadn’t taken a single vacation day yet, so he certainly had this coming to him. Mr. Borden should have clapped him on the shoulder, assured him that he would be missed, and wished him a safe trip. Instead, with a patently false look of sympathy, Kenny stuffed his hands in his pockets and said, “Well, that’s not really going to work for us. We just got a new case in, and I really can’t let you go right now. Sorry. I hope you haven’t booked a ticket yet…” TO BE CONTINUED...

CHAPTER

162

moment at the passageway from which he had emerged. Now some coal tar on your front teeth will make it seem that

some are missing.” Gonzalo put a few final touches on Sebastian’s face and then stepped back to survey his handiwork. “Not bad,” he said as he thrust his staff into Sebastian’s hand. “Now bend yourself over as if you have the largest hunchback, scrunch up your face into the most contorted grimace you can manage, and stamp on the ground with my staff.” Sebastian contorted his body and his face as Gonzalo had instructed. He took the staff in his hand, pawed at the ground and produced a few gargling, gurgling grunts followed by a hacking cough. Gonzalo clapped his hands. “Excellent! Now here are my final instructions. Do exactly as I say.” A short while later, the door to the passageway opened again, and the old friar emerged into the courtyard. He was obviously in a foul mood. He rampaged around the courtyard a few times, and then he banged on the gate with his staff. One of the guards came running to open it. The old friar bent his head, snarled and turned away. He mounted his donkey, rode out of the gate and turned once again toward the city. Moments later, he disappeared around the bend in the road. “Hey, Corporal,” said the tall guard. “How many times is the old bat — oh, excuse me, I mean the old holy man — how many times is he going to pull this silliness? You think he’s coming back?” The corporal laughed. “Of course he’s coming back. In fact, I think he’s making headway with Dominguez. Did you notice that this time he didn’t seem quite as agitated as before?” The tall guard scratched his head. “He still ran around with his staff like a madman and made those crazy noises, didn’t he?” “That he did. But the fire of holy indignation wasn’t raging like before. He seemed a little nervous but not screaming angry. I think he senses he’s close to a breakthrough, so he’s not so angry anymore. But he’s nervous.” The tall guard shrugged. “We’ll find out soon enough. If he stays on schedule, he should be coming back around now.” But five more minutes passed, and then ten more, and still, there was no sign of the old friar. The corporal left the guards stationed at the door to the passageway and walked down the road until he turned the bend. The road and a patchwork of smaller byways stretched before him down the hillside. As far as the eye could see, there was no sign of the friar or his donkey. The corporal spun around and ran back to the monastery. “Something’s wrong, muchachos,” he shouted. He dashed for the door to the passageway that led to the interrogation room, the two guards hard on his heels. They burst into the room, and for a moment, they thought it was empty. Then they heard a muffled moan coming from behind the table. The old friar lay on the floor in his undergarments, his hands and arms tied behind him with a pair of shirtsleeves. His feet were tied together with strips of dirty cloth that might once have been part of a shirtfront. A towel was stuffed into his mouth and secured in place by another dirty strip of cloth. There was an angry red bruise on his forehead, and an angrier red fury in his eyes. “Quick, untie him,” shouted the corporal. The tall guard produced a sharp dagger, slit the old friar’s bonds and

“THE MAN IS MAD AS A BAT, AND HE’S DETERMINED TO WRING A CONFESSION OUT OF DOMINGUEZ.”

“NOW BEND YOURSELF OVER AS IF YOU HAVE THE LARGEST HUNCHBACK, SCRUNCH UP YOUR FACE INTO THE MOST CONTORTED GRIMACE YOU CAN MANAGE, AND STAMP ON THE GROUND WITH MY STAFF.”

helped him to his feet. The old friar immediately grabbed the earthenware jug from the table and hurled it at the wall, where it shattered into a thousand pieces. A large stain of water ran down the wall. Screaming with fury, the old friar grabbed the edge of the table and flung it over. “Calm yourself, Good Father,” said the corporal. “He will not get far. We will capture him and give him back to you. But this time we will stay in the room. We could have avoided all this if you had let us stay in the room.” The old friar glared at the corporal and made a motion indicating that he wanted some clothes. “We will get you some clothes,” said the corporal, “as soon as we recapture the prisoner. There is not a single moment to waste. Just stay here, Father Miguel. We will be back shortly, and we will take care of you.” The corporal and the two guards mounted horses and set out in the direction of the city. There were hardly any people in the open because of the blazing heat, and the few that were outside had seen nothing. After a half-hour of fruitless searching, they returned to the monastery to sound the alarm. The Inquisition would mount a nationwide search. The prisoner would not escape. As they rode back to the monastery, the tall guard had a thought. “What do you think happened, Corporal?” he said. “It’s so simple that any fool can see,” said the corporal. “Dominguez knocked down the good father, stole his cassock and his staff and rode away on his donkey. What is so hard to figure out?” “I don’t think it’s so simple, Corporal,” said the tall guard. “Did you notice that Dominguez had sprouted a scraggly white beard, just like Father Miguel’s?” “No, I didn’t notice,” said the corporal. “How about you?” he said to the other guard, who responded with a blank stare and an indifferent shrug. The corporal looked at him through narrowed eyes. “Are you sure?” “I am,” said the tall guard. “He was bent over and the cowl hung over his head, but I could see part of his chin. There were white hairs on it, just like Father Miguel’s whiskers.” “How would Dominguez manage that on his own? I mean, he could overpower the old friar and steal his cassock and staff, but where would he get a white beard? Do you think Father Miguel had a hand in this?” “It looks like it,” said the tall guard. “Impossible! Why would he do such a thing?” “Why don’t we ask him?” said the tall guard. “Fine,” said the corporal. “You go check on him, while I go tell the warden what has happened.” 164

AFTER A HALFHOUR OF FRUITLESS SEARCHING, THEY RETURNED TO THE MONASTERY TO SOUND THE ALARM. THE INQUISITION WOULD MOUNT A NATIONWIDE SEARCH. THE PRISONER WOULD NOT ESCAPE. “He’s going to bite your head off.” “I know.” But when the tall guard returned to the interrogation room, the old friar was gone. Within minutes, the warden and the corporal arrived with a large contingent of guards. ”Mount a search,” the warden shouted to the guard. “A few of you men go upstairs and see if the friars saw him. For Heaven’s sake, how far could he have gotten in his undergarments?” “With your permission, captain,” said the corporal, “I would like to take a few men and search outside the monastery.” “Outside? In his undergarments?” “The man is mad, captain. I wouldn’t put anything past him.” “Very well, Diego,” said the warden. “Ride around and see what you can find, but try not to be such a fool this time.” “Yes, captain,” said the corporal. He signaled to the tall guard and to two others, and they went to get the horses. Once again, the corporal and his men scoured the mountainside, but there was no sign of the old friar. It was already late in the afternoon, and the worst of the heat had passed. More people had emerged from the shelter of their homes and were going about their business, but no one had seen a sign of the old friar. To be continued…

PA S T R A M I SANDWICH When I think of the perfect pastrami sandwich, a specific one comes to mind: the one sold by Gottlieb’s kosher delicatessen in Williamsburg. I tried recreating their famous sandwich so you could all get a taste, and I think I nailed it! INGREDIENTS

4 2 4 6-8 2

T. oil onions, sliced cloves garlic, minced slices pastrami slices rye bread or one club bread/ baguette Garlic mayo (recipe two pages away)

OPTIONAL ADD-ONS:

Sliced tomatoes Coleslaw Mustard DIREC T IO NS

1. Begin by sautéing the onions. Add the oil to a large pot on high heat. When the oil begins to shimmer, add the onions and garlic and turn the flame to low. Let the onions and garlic cook for around 30 to 45 minutes. (The key to achieving perfectly browned caramelized onions is letting the onions cook low and slow — low flame, slow cooking. Patience is key. Remember to stir every 5 to 10 minutes.) 2. While the onions cook, prepare the pastrami. In a grill pan preheated on high heat, add the pastrami slices and sear them for about 30 seconds to one minute on each side. Remove the slices from the pan. 3. Once the onions are done, it’s time to stack the sandwich. Spread garlic mayo on the insides of the bread or baguette. Next, add sautéed onions and any add-ons you choose, and then the pastrami. 4. Close the sandwich, cut it in half, and enjoy!

STARTING OUR DAY WITH BLESSING

BY: T. GESTETNER

A YID

once entered the room of Reb Levi Yitzchok of Berditchev while the Rebbe was reciting Birchos Hashachar, and he was surprised to find the Rebbe dancing joyously. The day has yet to begin, the Yid thought to himself, and already the Berditchever is so happy? He hasn’t yet accomplished anything! The Berditchever soon explained: “As I said the bracha ‘Shelo asani goy,’ I realized how fortunate I am to be a Yid. The very fact that I am obligated to recite this bracha tells me that things could have been different, and I thank Hashem for creating me this way!” In fact, each of the brachos we recite upon awakening has the capacity to envelop us in true joy. While asleep, we surrender our faculties to the Borei Olam, and as soon as awaken, we are once again blessed with the miracles of our existence: wisdom, freedom, sight, clothes, energy and more. How can we not praise our Creator? A new day has begun! New chances and new opportunities abound. Come, let’s take advantage…

188

The Monsey View

Chazal established Birchos Hashachar so that every day, before we take pleasure in the abundance of good around us, we remember to thank Hashem, the Source of all of our blessings.

Hanosen Lasechvi Vinah

The Birchos Hashachar were at first established to recite as the events of our day unfold. For example, as we’d hear the rooster crow at daybreak, we would say, “Hanosen lasechvi vinah.” When we would open our eyes, we would say, “Pokei’ach ivrim,” and when we would get dressed, we would say, “Malbish arumim.” The chachamim, however, determined that we should recite them all at once in order to make it easier to remove all outside thoughts. This gives us the ability to focus and say the brachos with the kedusha inherent in a special time and place for tefillah.

The word “sechvi” can be translated either as rooster or as human heart. The rooster has the understanding to differentiate between day and night; likewise, Hakadosh Baruch Hu has granted the heart of a person the ability to make this demarcation as well. In Jewish terminology, day and night symbolize the difference between good and bad, emes and sheker, life and death. We thank Hashem for giving us, as Yidden, the understanding to differentiate between what is right and what is wrong. This bracha also has an encouraging message for us. The rooster crows at the time of alos hashachar, when it is “bein yom u’vein laylah” and still pitch-black outside. Remarkably, it has the sense to foresee the break of dawn. Sometimes a person may feel life getting more difficult and darker, yet like the rooster, even at the darkest of night, we know that a new day is coming. There is light at the end of the tunnel.

Shelo Asani Goy Reb Baruch Ber of Kaminetz used to say that when he said this bracha every morning, joy would fill his heart. “I don’t have the primitive non-Jew in mind, or the simple peasants, but rather the professors and philosophers among them.” We aren’t thanking Hashem for elevating us above the simple street cleaners and lowlifes, but for making us greater than even the influential, powerful businessmen and leaders. 190

the shoe. “I’ll give you a size eleven, then,” he says. But this service defeats the purpose! Shoes wrongly sized will not be wearable. Similarly, each of us was given that which is good for us. “She’asani kirtzono” is an affirmation that I have everything I need, and need everything I have.

Pokei’ach Ivrim

The advantage of the Yid over the non-Jew is not just that we are occupied with the Torah and mitzvos, but that we are an entirely higher creation. The advantage of the simplest Yid is greater than the most important non-Jew. This bracha reminds us that our very essence is greater than the rest of humanity.

Shelo Asani Aved Being a slave means unimaginable angst. Imagine laboring day and night, subject and subservient to every whim of a master, without the freedom to do as we wish. When saying this bracha, we also have in mind that Hakadosh Baruch Hu redeemed us from slavery in Mitzrayim. Thank You, Hashem, that we are free and not enslaved, and that we were freed from our former bondage.

She’asani Kirtzono Coming after the bracha of “Shelo asani ishah,” it seem as if the woman is second-best. However, that is not at all what the bracha connotes! Rav Wolbe draws a parallel to the words of Kaddish. We say in Kaddish, “B’alma di bera kiruseh — this world that was created according to His ratzon.” Hakadosh Baruch Hu created the world in order to do good, to nurture and sustain all of creation. Similarly, the woman imitates this middah of Hashem, doing chesed, giving and nurturing — and accomplishing the purpose of creation. She’asani kirtzono is stated in singular form. To understand the reason for this, imagine the following scenario: A person enters a shoe store. The salesperson asks what size he is, and the customer replies, “Seven.” The salesperson then decides to be kind and add a couple of inches to 192

Thank You, Hashem, for opening our eyes, which were like those of a blind person while we were asleep. Now that we have awoken, we can see! Simply put, we must stop and reflect on the tremendous gift of sight. Interestingly, sight is the only one of the five senses mentioned in Birchos Hashachar. Unlike the other senses, sight is not limited to close proximity. What’s more, sight can take in hundreds of details in a split second, with the brain processing all of it. The Midrash Rabbah in Bereishis (53:14) says: “Hakol b’cheskas sumin ad she’Hakadosh Baruch Hu ma’ir es einayhem.” The Sfas Emes offers a fascinating explanation of this Chazal: We need to recognize that the world around us has everything we need in order to live our lives fully; we just need Hakadosh Baruch Hu to open our eyes so we can recognize that! In this bracha, we also ask Hashem to open our eyes to Torah and wisdom so we are able to view and grasp even that which is difficult to understand.

Malbish Arumim From shirts to stockings, sweaters to shoes, we thank Hashem for clothing our bodies and protecting us from the freezing cold and boiling heat. The gift of garments was bestowed upon Adam and Chava when they left Gan Eden. When Adam and Chava ate from the Eitz Hadaas, they gave in to their desire of the moment, forgetting that they had the ability to choose. Dressing in clothes serves as a reminder that we are above animals who are naked; we are the only creature with bechirah, the ability to choose! This idea is the basis of tznius. We are higher; we are greater than animals. Non-Jews were given free choice, too, but when they do not realize that they are above the level of animals, they allow themselves to stoop to animalistic cravings, and that is often apparent in their choice of clothing. Hakadosh Baruch Hu, in His kindness, prepared the

clothes for Adam and Chava Himself. Hashem did not just point us in the direction of the sheep; instead, He taught us that with the wool of the sheep or the cotton from the plant, we can create threads and fabrics and sew beautiful garments that will allow us to feel respectable and elevated.

Matir Assurim The simple translation of this bracha thanks Hashem for freeing those who are imprisoned. The Beis Yosef points out that we recite it every morning for we appreciate our renewed ability to move our limbs freely. When we are asleep, we are confined to one place, similar to a prisoner, but upon awakening, we can sit up and stretch our bones. The Olas Tamid adds that with this bracha, we also thank Hashem for redeeming us from the personal stresses and concerns that occupy our hearts and minds, which essentially turn us into prisoners. Hashem provides us with long-awaited yeshuos, leaving us with menuchas hanefesh and the ability to function properly and serve Hashem well. During a few moments of tranquility when we start our day, we can take a moment to ponder this and relieve our burdened hearts and minds.

Zokeif Kefufim Man was created different from all other creatures. Animals crawl on all fours, but man stands upright on two legs. The reason for this is that each creature is drawn to its source. Animals turn toward the earth from where they were born, and man, who has a neshamah carved from under the Kisei Hakavod, reaches for his Source. It is a pull that defies gravity, the pull of the neshamah yearning upward. Rabbeinu Tam says that while the animal is drawn to artziyus, earthliness, we stand upright, demonstrating that our neshamah and mind are dominant over our bodies. When our spirituality rules over our earthliness, we prove that we are above animals. On another note, after we lie supine on a bed, Hakadosh Baruch Hu enables us to stand upright upon awakening. On a deeper level, we are given the strength to stand up for what we feel is important. Additionally, in Olam Hazeh, there are many troubles that push us down, yet Hashem constantly lifts us up again, helping us rise above our burdens.

Roka Ha’aretz al Hamayim Before Hashem created the world, it was “sohu vavohu” (Bereishis 1:2). The entire planet was filled with water. Hashem created the land, raising it above the water, and until today the land rests “al pnei hamayim.” If you’ve ever watched the rushing water at the shore194

The Monsey View

line, you may have wondered in awe: What keeps the water from spilling over onto the dry land? It is simply that Hashem commanded the water exactly where to stop its flow, and indeed, it does not move beyond its boundaries. Every moment that the water restrains itself from gushing onto the land, it is fulfilling ratzon Hashem. Water exudes tranquility, relaxation and happiness. These same feelings can be acquired through doing ratzon Hashem. From time to time, Hashem sends an earthquake to shake the world. It is meant to serve as a wake-up call. Let us not take for granted that we have a beautifully mapped-out world, and pay attention to the nissim that Hashem performs each and every day.

Hameichin Mitzadei Gaver With this bracha, we thank Hashem for making our footsteps stable. Our legs are created with the ability to move and to help us move about. They have ligaments, tendons, muscles and joints that allow us to run, jump and turn in any direction we choose. Moreover, our legs can hold up our entire body. Additionally, “Hameichin mitzadei gaver” signifies that Hashem has prepared our path. All that happens in our lives has been preplanned by Hashem. A person cannot move his finger if it was not preordained so by Hakadosh Baruch Hu, and our every step is directed by hashgacha pratis. This bracha expresses our gratitude for our flexible, agile legs, and it strengthens our emunah that Hashem has a Master plan for us and is here to carry us through any situation in life.

She’asah Li Kal Tzarki When Hashem created the world, man was created last. In His great kindness, Hashem brought man to this world only after ensuring that all of his needs were already prepared for him. This bracha also refers to shoes. Shoes allow a person to get around and take care of all his needs. When we use animal leather to create our shoes, we demonstrate that the purpose of their creation is to serve our needs. Every shoe molds itself to the unique shape of a person’s foot. So, too, Hakadosh Baruch Hu gives each person everything that he specifically needs — the tools and the challenges — in order to accomplish his tafkid in life. This bracha is in singular, for each person should recognize that, in addition to having all of his needs met, he is also given custom-made challenges that will bring out his best and give him the opportunity to rise. Thank You, Hashem, for caring for all of our needs and showering us with so much good. With “She’asah li kol tzorki,” we strengthen our emunah, believing beyond doubt that Hashem will continue to provide us with everything that we need.

Ozer Yisroel Bigvurah Thank You, Hashem, for girding us with strength. In this bracha, we thank Hashem for our belt. In “Malbish aru196

mim,” we already acknowledged all of our clothes. Why do we need another bracha specifically for our belt? The belt is a spiritual garment. It is a garment of tznius, to help us triumph over our yetzer hara. The Gemara explains that the yetzer hara attempts to overpower the Yid every day. It takes a tremendous amount of strength to be oneself misgaber, and Hakadosh Baruch Hu helps us accomplish that. Hashem also girds us with strength to overcome the challenges that come our way. Even after recognizing in the last bracha that nisyonos are for our good, we acknowledge that we would not be able to surmount them without Heaven-sent strength.

Oter Yisroel B’sifarah This bracha defines our relationship with Hakadosh Baruch Hu. It is recited after a man puts on his hat. More than just an article of clothing, the hat symbolizes our deep connection to Hashem. The hat is worn on the head since the Kavod haShechinah rests on the head. The Gemara says that Hakadosh Baruch Hu dons tefillin every day — tefillin in which is written the praise of Klal Yisroel. Analogously, the tefillin that we Yidden wear contain the praise of Hakadosh Baruch Hu. This is why we say in Shir HaKavod, “Pe’eiro alay u’fe’eiri alav.” Hashem is proud of us, and we are proud to be His. Wearing tefillin and reciting this bracha provide an oppor-

tunity for man to connect with Hakadosh Baruch Hu every single day. We praise Hashem for being proud of us. He chose us, wants us, is happy with us — He is our loving Father! Hashem crowns Klal Yisroel with glory, and we should be worthy of our crown!

Hanosein Laya’ef Ko’ach We praise Hashem first thing in the morning for the miraculous gift of ko’ach. Every day, we go through many exhausting experiences that are physically tiring or emotionally draining. And every night, we have the opportunity to refresh ourselves through sleep. Our bodies heal, our brains store millions of details processed that day, and our emotions settle in their place. We wake up rejuvenated. Rav Dessler explained that Hashem gives ko’ach to one who tires himself and dedicates his life for Hashem. We get doses of energy to match our undertakings and efforts. However, cautioned the Beis Aharon, we are given a daily bundle of energy, enough to handle that particular day. If we choose to rush the future and carry worries and burdens that are not yet applicable, we will feel exhausted and depleted from the stress. Taking life one day at a time will ensure that we remain well within our daily quota of energy. Tomorrow is a new day, filled with new opportunities, and new kochos to match.

With our enhanced appreciation for the brachos that abound, may Hakadosh Baruch Hu deliver enhanced bracha to our homes and spread bracha to all of Klal Yisroel.

It was something that I’d contemplated doing for a long time, and when the opportunity presented itself, I didn’t want to let it slip away. Imagine watching a spectacular sunrise over the water, with just the rippling waves and deserted beach as company; to be one with the Creator and witness to grandeur we seldom see.

T

he idea thrilled me, and I was ready to give up half my night’s sleep for it. With a few of my married daughters on board, we set our alarm clocks for 2:45 a.m. The drive was slated to take an hour and a half. My daughters and I reflected that the day chosen for this adventure was one of the longest days of the year. Sunrise was to be at 5:27 a.m. We gazed out the window, observing the sky change colors from inky black to deep navy blue. By the time we clambered out of the car, the sky was already light blue, though it would still be twenty minutes until the sun would make its grand entrance. With cameras focused on the distant spot over the horizon, we began to make note of the pink and orange steaks reflected in the stray clouds above. Then the sun’s rays appeared. We checked our watches. Another five minutes. We marveled at the precision of this whole event. Timed down to the last second, the sun rises consistently each morning. Our calendars, printed way in advance, include the calculated times relevant for zman tefillah, and we rely on their scientific accuracy. Yet here, just moments before the sun was to rise, we pondered the miraculous ways of Hashem. Each and every morning that the sun rises is the renewal of creation once again. The scenery was changing before our eyes. The colors, their shades, their positions, were unveiling light like a film in slow motion. At last, the edge of the sun appeared. “It’s here! The sun is coming up!” we exclaimed to one another. And what a show it was! It took no more than two minutes from when the sun peeked out until a full sphere was visible over the horizon. The great lu-

minary was dressed for the occasion in incredible shades of pink, orange and purple, colors that are hard to describe in words. They put any jigsaw puzzle to shame. The shimmering waters reflected the exquisiteness, reaching out over the waves in our direction. As the sun rose , the majestic hues faded away and were replaced with the familiar shades of yellow and gold. The new day had begun, just as it did each morning, in full glory and magnificence. Only today, we had witnessed it. I looked up and down the empty beach and wondered, “Where is everybody? Did everyone really just sleep through this performance?” And I stopped to think. How many things take place while I’m sleeping? How many chasadim does Hakadosh Baruch Hu perform while I am blissfully unaware? I open the window shades each morning, and naturally, the world is lit by this spectacular sun. A whole celestial show has taken place, but because it happens with such regularity, I don’t even know what I missed. As I recited the words of Shacharis at the ocean’s edge, there was so much more meaning in the words of Hame’ir La’aretz — “In His goodness, He renews the work of creation every day, continuously.” I contemplated the words “V’hiskin me’oros mesamei’ach olamo.” Not only does the sun provide us with light and warmth, but it inserts cheer and, yes, sunshine into our lives. “L’oseh orim gedolim!” Hashem, Who shines a multibillion-watt light bulb over His entire world each day so that we can all enjoy its therapeutic qualities, will also illuminate the darker nooks and crannies of my life so that I continue to “see the light” and proclaim with clarity, “Modim anachnu lach … v’al nisecha sheb’chol yom imanu … sheb’chol eis, erev vavoker v’tzohorayim…” This profound knowledge was worth so much more than the few hours of sleep I had given up in exchange.

What’s Behind the Bracha? BY: RUCHY REESE

Once upon a time, Yidden didn’t make brachos. There was no Kiddush, Hamotzi, Borei Pri Hagafen, or even Shehakol. Lulavim were shuckled sans blessing, and sheva brachos were merely a celebration of “sheva.” How is it, then, that we make brachos when our ancestors did not?

The truth is that our ancestors did pronounce brachos, continually using their own words to thank the Creator for His faithful hashgacha. We see this often in the Torah.

Eliezer bentched Hashem, saying,

“Blessed is Hashem, the G-d of my master, Avraham, Who has not forsaken His lovingkindness and His truth from my master.” –Bereishis 24:27

Dovid Hamelech bentched Hashem before the assembled Yidden:

And Dovid blessed Hashem before the eyes of the entire assembly, and Dovid said, “Blessed are You, the G-d of Yisroel our Father, from everlasting to everlasting.” –Divrei Hayamim 1 29:10

The Yidden then followed the king’s lead:

And Dovid said to the entire assembly, “Now bless Hashem your G-d,” and the assembly blessed Hashem, the G-d of their fathers, and they bowed down before Hashem and before the king. –Divrei Hayamim I 29:20

Blessing Hashem was part and parcel of Yiddishe life. So what exactly does it mean that our ancestors didn’t make brachos? Simply put, they didn’t make brachos following a specific halachic formulation until the era of Bayis Sheini. This applies to brachos over food, mitzvos and events. Birchas Hamazon, however, was the exception. Bentching followed a specific formulation, with the first section having been composed by Moshe Rabbeinu himself. (Later sections were added by Yehoshua, Dovid Hamelech, Shlomo Hamelech, and the chachmei Yavneh.)

A New Phase in Yiddishe Life It was the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah who established the halachic structure we are familiar with today. This was done when Yidden began returning from Galus Bavel, many of them having never learned Lashon Hakodesh or the halachos by which we are commanded to live. Though there was a severe lack of knowledge, the thirst for spirituality was strong, and Yidden desperately wanted to connect with their Creator. The intensity of these feelings was a double-edged sword, for while a spiritual fire burned in the bosom of every man, that fire could also be channeled into the worship of false gods — and this made the lure of avodah zara extremely powerful. The sages of that generation realized that Yiddishkeit had suffered greatly from the trials of dispersion. They understood that drastic measures had to be taken to protect the faith of the people. To combat these dangers, the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah davened for the inclination toward avodah zara to be destroyed. And though it was, we lost the precious gift of nevuah along with it. With this painful loss of prophecy, Klal Yisroel moved into a new era — one of hester panim, in which the hand of Hashem became more hidden and spirituality became drastically less intense. To ensure that Yidden had a tangible way of connecting with Hashem, certain halachic institutions were established. One of these is the requirement to make a bracha before eating, drinking, and performing mitzvos, as well as upon experiencing certain events. The obligation of making a bracha causes one to seek out and recognize Hashem at even the most mundane moments of life. It is an intentionally mindful way of being conscious of Hashem’s hashgacha.

Fascinating Brachos Much can be said about the beauty of brachos, but for now, let’s explore a few uncommon brachos and some of the situations in which they’re said. Please note that this is but a general overview of the topic and not piskei halacha. Please consult your rav for specifics. 214

MESHANEH HABRIYOS

Blessed are You… Who makes creatures different When this bracha is said:

Upon seeing a monkey, elephant, or a human being with extremely diverse features for the first time.

What’s behind the bracha:

Hashem creates the world and its creations with extreme precision. Part of the precision is that while all living beings share certain characteristics, there are differences within every one. We pick up on these nuances even when they are slight, such as being able to see the subtle differences between humans who are blessed with the standard two eyes, two ears, a nose, a mouth, and so on. When those differences are magnified, it is even easier to appreciate Hashem’s ability to fashion each creation in a unique manner. For this reason, a bracha was instituted to praise Hashem’s creating diverse beings. When it comes to the bracha on animals, one must wonder why we specifically pronounce it upon seeing monkeys and elephants. This relates back to the Dor Hamabul, when a group of ancients climbed the Migdal Bavel, preparing to wage war on Hashem. Part of the group was cast down and transformed into apes and elephants. The word “meshaneh” can also allude to this transformation, causing the bracha to hint that Hashem literally “changes creatures.” Please note: This bracha should never be said upon seeing another human being if it will embarrass them.

HATOV V’HAMEITIV (specifically upon wine)

Blessed are You… Who is good and beneficent When this bracha is said:

On drinking multiple types of wine

What’s behind the bracha:

The bracha Hatov V’hameitiv is Shehecheyanu’s close relative. While Shehecheyanu is said over goodness experienced by a solitary individual, Hatov V’hameitiv is said when the good benefits more than just one person. While there are various conditions as to when to pronounce this bracha, we’ll focus on just one aspect. Though we know that Borei Pri Hagafen is the bracha said over wine, there is actually a second bracha that should be pronounced when the circumstances are right. Wine is said to gladden the heart, and each type of wine has its own unique flavor profile, bringing various types of joy to the drinker. Wine consumed in the company of others is an even greater form of pleasure. For this reason, if two or more people are drinking wine and another bottle of wine is brought to the table after a bracha has already been made on the first type, the bracha of Hatov V’hameitiv is pronounced over the new addition, for Hashem has increased their joy.

SHENASAN MICHVODO L’BASAR VADAM

Blessed are You… Who gives of His glory to flesh and blood When this bracha is said:

Upon seeing a non-Jewish king

What’s behind the bracha:

The pomp and circumstance that surrounds royalty offers a mere glimpse into the glory that will surround Melech HaMoshiach when Hashem chooses to send him. For though the nations of the world revere their leaders, Moshiach will “speak peace to the “nations,” and all of them will seek his counsel. Seeing the honor afforded to royalty increases anticipation for a time in which the world will be united in serving the true King under the leadership of His anointed king. It is questionable whether one should make a bracha upon seeing rulers who do not possess the power of execution, such as the president of the United States. There are those who rule that if a king is not dressed in royal clothing or is not being afforded honor when one sees him, a bracha should not be made.

ZOCHER HABRIS V’NE’EMAN BIVRISO V’KAYAM B’MAAMARO Blessed are You… Who remembers the covenant and is faithful to His covenant, and keeps His promise When this bracha is said: Upon seeing a rainbow

What’s behind the bracha:

After Hashem destroyed the world with the Mabul, He told Noach that He would put the rainbow in the clouds as a sign of His bris to never completely destroy Earth through a flood again. When one sees a rainbow, it is a reminder that evil still exists in this world and that Hashem is holding back His wrath and upholding His covenant. This is hinted to by the position of the rainbow. On an archer’s bow, the arrow — a weapon of destruction — is placed at the apex of the bow’s curve. When one imagines the rainbow as an archer’s bow, he sees that the arrow would be facing heavenward, away from Earth, as if Hashem is showing us that He is sparing the world from destruction. Staring at a rainbow is considered harmful. Therefore, one should only glance at it briefly and then make the bracha.

OSEH MAASEH BEREISHIS Blessed are You… Who does the work of the beginning When this bracha is said:

Upon seeing certain wonders of nature

What’s behind the bracha:

While this bracha is commonly associated with lightning, it is actually said in a variety of situations. When one sees a mountain that is aweinspiring in its beauty, witnesses a shooting star, experiences an earthquake or hurricane, sees a large desert (such as the Sahara) or one of the oceans, one also pronounces the bracha of oseh maaseh bereishis. This bracha makes us mindful of Hashem’s great and awesome Hand that creates all the wonders of the world.

BOREI MINEI BESAMIM Blessed are You… Who has created various kinds of fragrances When this bracha is said: Over certain fragrances

What’s behind the bracha:

Food and drink aren’t the only pleasures that man is forbidden to enjoy without a bracha; fragrances, too, require a blessing. It is the soul, in particular, that enjoys fragrances. The pasuk tells us, “Let every soul praise Hashem” (Tehillim 150:6). The word “neshamah” has the same letters as “neshimah — breath,” allowing the verse to be read as, “Let every breath praise Hashem.” When one inhales a scent, they are delighting the neshamah, though the enjoyment ceases immediately when the scent ceases. For this reason, there is no bracha acharonah on fragrances.

What Does a Bracha Do? We’re all familiar with the words of Hallel that proclaim the Heavens to be Hashem’s and what’s on Earth to be given to man:

“Hashamayim shamayim laHashem, v’haaretz nasan livnei adam.” –Tehillim 115:16

It is said that through the making of a bracha, man becomes permitted to partake of Hashem’s bounty. The question is: What actually happens when a person makes a bracha? Does that which is from the earth lose its status as belonging to Hashem? Does it become downgraded? The answer is actually the opposite: The word “baruch” comes from the root “breicha,” which can mean “spring.” Like spring waters flow downward, Hashem — the Source of everything — allows His goodness to flow earthward through man’s bracha. Instead of the item losing its holy status, man is elevated through the bracha, causing him to become a partner with Hashem in making the world a more G-dly place. The bracha redefines the person, not the item. It makes him holy, for he becomes an ambassador of Hashem on Earth — and through that, he becomes worthy of partaking of Hashem’s goodness. 226

A PLANT-BASED MILK TUTORIAL

One of the most exciting perks of being a recipe contributor is the food experimenting my work entails. Although many would find this daunting, I actually enjoy the thrill despite the fact that it means dealing with way more mishaps and frustrations than the average housewife. When I was challenged with the task of creating a recipe for both almond and oat milk, I was intrigued and excited. Producing almond milk was not new to me, as I’ve made in the past for Pesach. And the oat milk? I was actually happy to try it. Today, with the steady increase of people who refrain from partaking in dairy due to allergies, sensitivity or special dietary concerns, I thought it would be worthwhile to give this a try.

BY: LEAH STERN

After some research, I learned that according to the pros, making oat milk is super simple. All one needs, they said, is two ingredients and a few moments to master the art of actually making delicious, creamy oat milk. But, boy, were they wrong, and the proof was in the milk. What these two ingredients yielded was a tasteless, watered-down version of unseasoned breakfast oatmeal cereal. However, the consistency, creaminess and color were all perfect, so I chose not to nix this process just yet. I tried another batch, this time with the addition of a bit of salt. It improved the taste of the milk, but not enough for me to feel comfortable sharing the recipe with all of you. It was only when I added the one ingredient that I absolutely did not want to include that I GOT MILK. So yes, to my disappointment, sugar was the key to making this an absolutely delicious and refreshing milk substitute. (You still won’t get that perfectly colored coffee when you add oat milk to your cup of joe, though. Only almond milk will give you the same color as milk.) I did not try this with any sugar substitutes, but if anyone does, I’d love to hear the feedback. And now, let’s get started! June 22, 2022

1 4 ½ 2

cup rolled oats (old-fashioned) cups good-quality water tsp. kosher salt tsp. sugar

DIREC T IO NS

1. Line the colander with the fabric cloth, stretching it as you place it over the colander. Place the colander over the bowl. 2. Place the oats into the blender (without rinsing or soaking the oats first). Add water and salt. Blend on high speed for 45 seconds. 3. Pour the contents into the lined colander. Allow the milk to drip down. When the blended oats accumulate onto the cloth, you can scrape it off gently with a spoon, or stretch the cloth to allow the rest of the milk to run through. Do not squeeze out any remaining milk that does not drip down on its own, as it will make the milk slimy. 4. Transfer the milk to a 4-cup jar. Add the sugar and shake well. Storage: For optimal freshness, store the milk in a glass jar in the coldest part of the fridge. The milk will last for approximately 5 days. Please note that the milk will settle in the fridge. Shake well before using. Note: If using a smaller strainer, it is advisable to make only half of the recipe at a time. Note: Do not attempt to make oat milk with quick or instant oats, because it will make slimier milk.

Newly purified of sin, the world stood empty save for Noach and his sons. It was then that Hashem pledged to never destroy all of mankind again, with the rainbow the sign of His promise, and the sign of His love. Though we are not to stare at the rainbow, this symbol of Hashem’s Divinity, we may glance at the wonder in order to bless and thank Hashem for remembering His covenant to us: Baruch… zocher habris v’ne’eman bivriso v’kayam b’maamaro. The Midrash tells of the generations that were so righteous that no rainbows were seen in their lifetimes: the generation of Chizkiyahu Hamelech, the era of the Anshei Knesses Hagedolah, the generation of Rabi Shimon bar Yochai, and the generation of Rabi Yehoshua ben Levi.

Shine Up in the Rainbow “Red and orange, green and blue, shiny yellow, purple, too…” Did you also grow up on this sweet ditty? The correct order is actually red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet. Once you hit science class, you’ll have the affable acronym Roy G. Biv as a memorization aid.

Eye of the Beholder What is a rainbow? It is nothing. It is everything. A symbol of Divine beauty; light that is refracted through millions of droplets of water. There is nothing tangible about a rainbow, and you’d be able to walk right through it if not for the fact that it moves with you. And each rainbow is unique to its viewer — you and I see its shape, arc and color bands differently, because our perceptions differ. So what actually happens? Refraction happens. That’s when the light from the sun changes direction as it enters a medium denser than air — in this case, a raindrop. Since white light is made up of a spectrum of colors that travel at different speeds as they pass through a medium, we see the colors separately as they are reflected out of the raindrop. The colors with the longest wavelengths appear on the outer part of the arc, and the shortest wavelength is all the way down and in.

Optical Illusion That’s right, there’s nothing physical about this three-ingredient wonder. All you need is rain, sun and air, and… hey! Where is that gorgeous arc — near or far? It all depends on where you’re standing in relation to the sun.

When Conditions Are Right… Rainbows don’t come round all the time; the conditions must be just right. The sun must be 42 degrees or lower in the horizon — which is why rainbows are more likely to dazzle as the day comes to a close. The sky must be part raining and part sunny. And it’s usually not in the winter, as there are less raindrops hanging around then — they’re busy in their role as snowflakes.

Rare Rainbows Classic rainbows boast the colors we know, once, and in a visible arc. But what of light that is reflected twice in a raindrop? You’ll get a double rainbow.

Did You Know? • The longest-observed rainbow lasted for nearly nine hours. • Rainbows and music are made of the same stuff; they just vibrate at a different frequencies. • You can never get to the end of a rainbow; it moves along with you.

Take the moonlight reflecting through a raindrop and you’ll see the rare moonbow! You’ll see it all in white, though, which is why it’s also been dubbed the “monochrome rainbow.”

• A rainbow is a full circle, but you can only see it if you happen to be in the sky when the rainbow shows. • Move to Hawaii, and you’ll see more rainbows than anywhere on Earth. Rainbows occur more frequently in tropical locations and by waterfalls, sea sprays and geysers. • The only planet in the solar system to boast rainbows is our very own Earth. • Like the stripes in the rainbow? There are none. That’s right; the rainbow is a continuous blend of colors that we humans like to categorize into bands. It’s unclear if the stripes we see are purely in our brains or also in our optic nerves.

You’ll almost never see a red rainbow; it’s formed after rain showers during sunrise or sunset. You might glimpse a twinned rainbow — two rainbows split from a single base. Another infrequent phenomenon is a stacker rainbow: several faint, unusually patterned pastel rainbows on the inner side of the primary rainbow. Very rarely, these will appear on the outside, as well.

Make It Happen! Want a rainbow of your own? Just take out your garden hose on a sunny day. Adjust the spray nozzle so the water comes out in a fine mist, and hold the hose high. Stand with the sun behind you, and check out the mist from the hose. You’ll see a tiny rainbow if you’re at the correct angle. Blowing bubbles on a sunny day will give you gorgeous rainbows, too.
