FOND CAMP MEMORIES

(Re: Camp Days Are Coming: Issue 351) I enjoy your magazine very much each week. I especially enjoyed last week’s issue, which brought back wonderful memories of my camp days. I appreciated the article “Now I Understand,” and Hindy Kviat’s account of her camp experience was very interesting to read and made me appreciate all that we have today! I was also excited to see you featuring The Long Road to Freedom as a serial. I love Avner Gold’s books. Thank you! Faigy Feldbrand

(Re: FYI: Pay Phones, Issue 351) I really appreciated the article about the kiddush Hashem made before the daughter of the man who hid Yidden during the war. I am really impressed with these well-mannered girls, and the story warmed my heart! I would also like to comment on one fact included in the FYI on pay phones. You mentioned the price of 25 cents having ended in the ‘90s, but I grew up in the early 2000s, and I still remember using the pay phone for just one quarter. (And the best part was when we’d get it returned in error, or would find someone else’s quarter in the return!) Goldie Lebron W E A T H E R

LABELING MADE EASY

(Re: The Great, Big Pack, Issue 351) Kudos to a well-done magazine covering a host of topics applicable for today’s mothers. In last week’s interview, the various methods for labeling our kids’ camp clothes were discussed. I must add that there is an excellent tool available that works much like a stapler that applies labels (sew-on) to clothing and beyond. (It’s great on socks, too.) The labels don’t fall off, ever, and it’s very easy to apply. My twelve-year-old does it himself! It’s very popular in Williamsburg, but is now available in Monsey at F&F Family Shop on 43 Main St. The tool is long-lasting and can be used for various other functions, such as attaching buttons or hanging noi sukkah. TEHILLIM INSPIRATION

(Re: Tehillim Contest, Issue 350) We truly look forward to this amazing free magazine every week. The Shavous Tehillim contest was really a hit. Both my five-year-old and six-and-a-half-year-old children were really motivated to say Tehillim on each of the three days . We picked up the prize, and that, too, is keeping them busy. Keep up the great work! Family Schwartz

YOUR VOICE UP AND UP AND UP

Grocery shopping as of late has been a stress-inducing activity. Every time I go to the grocery, it seems that the price of each item I purchase has gone up by another ten cents or so. From dairy, to snacks, to baked goods — and I’m not even referring to ready foods, which I know are super expensive — things are simply becoming unaffordable. And that means that my grocery total each week is also skyrocketing, and we are paying so much more in weekly groceries than we have in the past. Am I the only one who’s feeling this? I know there’s inflation at play here (and I don’t know why I’m not feeling the inflation as far as my job is concerned), but the speed at which food is going up makes it feel like groceries are considered luxury items. And we need to eat. I am writing this letter to know if there’s anything we can do before this turns into a full-fledged crisis. PARSHAS BEHA’ALOSCHA The Trumpets’ Blast

In this week’s parsha, Moshe Rabbeinu was commanded to create two silver trumpets. They would be used to gather the Nesi’im or all of Klal Yisroel and signal to Klal Yisroel when it was time to travel. “Aseh lecha shtei chatzotzros — Make for yourself two trumpets,” the pasuk says (Bamidbar 10:2). Rashi explains, based on the Gemara in Menachos (28b), that the singular form “make for yourself ” signifies that these trumpets were to be created and used by Moshe alone — and not by future generations. This is different from the other keilim of the Beis Hamikdash, which were fashioned once and remained for all generations. Why weren’t Moshe’s trumpets good for all time? Why did every generation have to create new ones? AFTER A BRUTAL ATTACK by the hands of a Cossack, Reb Shlomo of Karlin, zt”l, fought for his life. Just before surrendering his neshamah al kiddush Hashem, the Rebbe issued one final bidding to his chassidim: “Go to the tzaddik, Reb Mordechai of Neshchiz!” Several days later, Reb Uri of Strelisk, one of Reb Shlomo’s greatest talmidim and a baal ruach hakodesh, arrived in Karlin. Upon his arrival, he learned that his Rebbe had been taken in the prime of his life. Soon Reb Uri heard about the Rebbe’s last words, and he immediately set out to fulfill them. Without unpacking his bags in Karlin, he took to the roads again, this time headed for Neshchiz. He arrived at with perfect timing. As he entered the beis medrash of the tzaddik of Neshchiz, Reb Uri found dozens of people waiting to go into the Rebbe’s room. There were talmidei chachamim and simple folk, rich and poor, healthy and ill — a colorful sampling of Klal Yisroel. The Rebbe welcomed each one with a radiant countenance, offering guidance and

dispensing blessings. Suddenly, a tall Yid with a ruddy complexion and large bearing marched into the room. His coarse mannerism indicated he was but a simple villager who had come for advice about his businesses. Reb Uri grimaced. He could sniff the sins of this villager from a few feet away. It was a stark contrast to the holiness in the room. To his surprise, the Neshchizer Rebbe received the fellow with a warm smile and patiently gave him as much time as he wanted. The villager left the Rebbe’s room with targeted advice and bountiful blessings. How could it be? Reb Uri wondered to himself. Does the Rebbe not sense what I sense? Just then, the Rebbe called out to Reb Uri: “Yungerman! What are you doing here? Leave my room!” Reb Uri’s feet could barely carry him out in disgrace. Perhaps I already fulfilled Reb Shlomo’s final will simply by coming to Neshchiz, he thought, still shaking from the encounter. Do I

“When it comes to such a simple, sinful Yid, we must draw him near.” still need to speak with the Rebbe? As he was deciding what to do, Reb Mordechai suddenly appeared at his side. “Come with me,” he said, leading Reb Uri to his room. When the two were alone, Reb Mordechai turned to Reb Uri and said, “I know what you were thinking, and believe me, I also saw what you saw. In previous years, perhaps the right thing to do would have been to push such a person away in order to lead him to repent. But times have changed… If I would have sent him away, he would have just distanced himself from Torah and Yiddishkeit more and more! Today we have to take a different approach. When it comes to such a simple, sinful Yid, we must draw him near. That is the way to inspire others to do teshuvah in our days…” The Rebbe was telling him that in every generation, the language is different. Today, the overriding language is one of love and warmth. With sincerity and affection, we can create a connection and draw others close. Reb Uri internalized the message, taking it with him for life, as he himself turned out to be a spiritual leader — the renowned Seraf of Strelisk. * * * * * This is how Rav Chatzkel Abramsky answered our question regarding the generational trumpets. The trumpets represented the means that allowed the manhig hador to give over messages to his followers. By directing the Yidden to create new trumpets in every generation, the Torah is teaching us that this channel of direction is not meant to be passed on from generation to generation; rather, in every time period, different trumpets must be used. During every tekufah, we must use different means, customized according to the challenges and kochos of the generation, in order to draw close to the Ribono Shel Olam. Adapted from the teachings of Rav Mordechai Freundlich, zt”l.

Did You Know? Trumpet blasts were a daily sound in the Beis Hamikdash. Every morning they announced that the gates were opened. When the korbanos tamid of the morning and afternoon were brought, they resounded again. On Erev Shabbos, there were two rounds of trumpet blasts — the first reminded everyone to wind down their work and prepare for the holy day, and the second blasted just as Shabbos was coming in. Similarly, in many Jewish neighborhoods today, bells chime or music plays to signify the arrival of Shabbos.

MOSQUITOES AND TICKS HATE HIM. HOMEOWNERS LOVE HIM. You may have seen his iconic orange-and-green yard signs throughout Monsey and beyond. With mosquito and tick season at full throttle, we spoke with YEKUSIEL TAPICK, founder and CEO of MOSQUITO SWATTERS, to learn about mosquito and tick prevention. 1. Is there really a way to rid my property of mosquitoes and ticks? There sure is! Based on our experience, after the first treatment homeowners see an approximate 80% reduction in mosquitoes. That number increases to 90% to 95% after the second treatment. The few mosquitoes that still exist around the property after treatment are due to the occasional mosquitoes that enter from afar. Properties that are adjacent to other treated properties will see an even greater reduction. Regarding ticks, after the first treatment, approximately 95% of homeowners do not encounter any ticks. After the second treatment, that number increases to 98%.

2. Wow! Those are some pretty fantastic statistics! How does it work? Our technicians treat the property with a product that kills both mosquitoes and ticks on contact. Most mosquitoes and ticks will live or land in the near vicinity before approaching anyone. Standing water, such as collected rain water, must be treated or removed. By specifically targeting treatment in the areas they breed, habitat and land, the mosquitoes and ticks are eliminated before they can cause any harm.

3. That’s fascinating. Is exposure to these products safe for humans? Yes. All our products are approved by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and are completely safe for human exposure. Before approaching the treated area, one should wait approximately 15 to 20 minutes to allow the product to dry.

MOSQUITO

SWATTERS MOSQUITO & TICK CONTROL 8 4 5 - 3 8 8 -2 9 1 1

4. How often do you have to treat a property? We recommend treating a property every 21 days for optimal effectiveness. After this time, exposure to the sun causes the product to degrade, weakening the protective barrier around your yard. Under typical conditions, once the product is dry, it can resist rain and other elements for the duration of the 21 days.

5. Does it work for other bugs? Yes. Another added benefit of treating your property for mosquitoes and ticks, is that it helps reduce other bugs such as flies, gnats, and chiggers. However, this specific treatment is most effective for ticks and mosquitoes.

6. Can I buy this product myself? The product we use is only available in New York State for those licensed by the DEC (Department of Environmental Conservation). Additionally, our technicians are trained in finding the sources and breeding locations of mosquitoes and ticks and use powerful equipment to properly distribute the product.

YOU FOUND A TICK. NOW WHAT?

Tick bites can make people sick. Below are some steps that you can take after a tick bite to reduce your chances of getting sick and how to get treatment promptly if you do get sick.

Remove the tick as soon as possible. 1. Use fine-tipped tweezers to grasp the tick as close to the skin as you can. 2. Pull upward with steady, even pressure. Don’t twist or jerk the tick. 3. After removing the tick, clean the bite area and your hands with rubbing alcohol or soap and water. 4. Dispose of the tick by flushing it down the toilet. If you would like to bring the tick to your health care provider for identification, put it in rubbing alcohol or place it in a sealed bag/container.

Consider calling your health care provider. In general, CDC does not recommend taking antibiotics after tick bites to prevent tick-borne diseases. However, in certain circumstances, a single dose of doxycycline after a tick bite may lower your risk of Lyme disease. Consider talking to your health care provider if you live in an area where Lyme disease is common.

Watch for symptoms for 30 days. Call your health care provider if you get any of the following: • Rash

• Headache

• Fever

• Muscle pain

• Fatigue

• Joint swelling and pain

Treatment for tick borne-diseases should be based on symptoms, history of exposure to ticks, and in some cases, blood test results. Most tick-borne diseases can be treated with a short course of antibiotics. SOURCE : CE NTE R S FOR DI S E A S E CONTROL A ND PR E V E NTION (CDC ) CDC .GOV

SOME MOSQUITO FUN FACTS

• There are about 2,700 species of mosquito. There are 176 species in the United States. • The average mosquito weighs about 2.5 milligrams. • The average mosquito takes in about 5-millionths of a liter of blood during feeding. Mosquitoes fly an estimated 1 to 1.5 miles per hour. • Bigger people are often more attractive to mosquitoes because they are larger targets and they produce more mosquito attractants, namely CO2 and lactic acid. • Active or fidgety people also produce more CO2 and lactic acid. • Dark clothing has been shown to attract some species of mosquitoes more than lighter-colored clothing. • Movement increased mosquito biting up to 50%, according to some research tests. • A full moon increased mosquito activity 500%, according to one study

With Summer Approaching, Felder Urges NYers To Check Their License for Suspensions With stories rolling in each summer of motorists being arrested after unknowingly driving with suspended licenses, Senator Simcha Felder urges New Yorkers to avoid potential problems by checking their records before hitting the roads. In a video released last Thursday, Felder explained that his office receives multiple frantic calls throughout the summer season from constituents whose routine traffic stops turn into nightmare scenarios, with some even finding themselves spending time behind bars. “At that point, it’s really too late, even with a wife and children in the car, even late on a Friday afternoon,” warned Felder. “You’re stuck, and in that situation, it’s going to give you a lot of stress, be very traumatic and costly.” Felder advised drivers to take a few moments to ensure that their licenses are violation-free and provided an important opportunity to correct any problems that may exist before they turn into larger issues. “My staff will check your driver’s license with the Department of Motor Vehicles and get back to you so you can drive anywhere you’d like this summer without any aggravation and with peace of mind,” said Felder, adding, “I beg you to please call my office at 718-253-2015, and have a wonderful summer.”

At Long Last, COVID Testing Requirement Lifted for International Travel One of the last remaining federal COVID restrictions has been relegated to the history books, with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention freeing international flyers from the requirement of having to present a negative coronavirus test in order to legally enter the United States. The Associated Press reported that the new rule went into effect last Sunday. The move was hailed by Roger Dow, president of the U.S. Travel Association, as “another huge step forward for the recovery of inbound air travel and the return of international travel to the United States.” The testing requirement

was originally instituted in January 2021, and its opponents had long argued for its repeal, noting that it did little to prevent the transmission of the coronavirus. “We’ve got plenty of COVID here,” said Dr. William Schaffner of Vanderbilt University. “It’s like telling someone not to pour a bucket of water in their swimming pool.” While the testing requirement has been officially dropped, the CDC is still recommending that air travelers take a COVID test prior to boarding their flights as a safety precaution.

Carpool Discount To Disappear as GWB Implements Cashless Tolls Traveling across the George Washington Bridge is about to become even more expensive for some drivers as of July 10, when a move to cashless tolling will eliminate the crossing’s carpool discount. Removing all of the existing toll booths at the George Washington Bridge could potentially alleviate at least some of the congestion that plagues the bridge, the busiest of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s crossings. But the Port Authority has said that without having human toll collectors in place, it will be impossible to determine how many people are in each vehicle, and which ones are eligible for the carpool discount. New Jersey Congressman Josh Gottheimer slammed the Port Authority, noting that the move to cashless tolling will cost travelers an additional $9.50 per day to use the bridge and will likely create more pollution, with drivers having less incentive to carpool. “Cashless is good, but carpool-less is bad,” said Gottheimer. “It doesn’t make any sense to me, and it’s ridiculous that the Port Authority is trying to saddle hard-working commuters with new tolls right now, especially at a time when we’re trying to make life more affordable.” Gottheimer has been one of several elected officials who had been encouraging the Port Authority to use technology that is already in use in California, Georgia, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Virginia, Texas and Utah to detect the number of occupants in a vehicle. Passenger detection technology developed by Xerox currently has a 95% accuracy, said Gottheimer.

Faulty Door Prompts Recall of 55,000+ French Door Refrigerators A faulty door hinge that has caused several foot injuries has prompted the recall of thousands of stainless steel refrigerators that were sold exclusively at Lowe’s. The Consumer Product Safety Commission issued the recall of Hisense USA 26.6-cubic-foot French Door Refrigerators on June 9. The units were sold between August 2020 and February 2022 for $1,500 in Lowe’s stores and on the company’s website. Hisense has received 139 reports of refrigerator doors that have loosened or come off completely, with five injuries known to be linked to the faulty units. The affected refrigerators bear the model number HRF266N6CSE and serial numbers ranging from C2020050100001 through C2020123109000. The CPSC is urging anyone with a recalled refrigerator to stop using the unit if its doors do not open or close properly. Instead, consumers should contact Hisense at 888-497-1189 to determine if their refrigerator is part of the recall and to schedule a free in-home hinge replacement. According to the CPSC, 55,200 units in the United States are included in the recall, with an additional 78 refrigerators located in Canada also affected.

Lawmakers Call on Governor To Pass School Panic Alarm Bill Hoping to safeguard schoolchildren, a quartet of upstate lawmakers is calling on Governor Kathy Hochul to sign a bill that would have schools considering the installation of silent panic alarms as part of their emergency safety protocols. Assemblyman Michael Lawler, Senator Shelley Mayer, Senator Elijah Reichlin-Melnick and Assemblyman Ken Zebrowski all gathered in front of Nyack High School last Wednesday to announce the passage of Alyssa’s Law, named for fourteen-year-old Alyssa Alhadeff who was killed in the 2018 shooting in Parkland, Florida. The bill would have the state reimbursing school districts for installing silent panic alarms that would connect directly to local law enforcement, speeding up response time and potentially saving lives. It is unclear if private schools would receive similar reimbursements. Nyack High Schooler Jordyn Turner, a cousin of Alhadeff, has been advocating for the bill’s passage, and she joined the lawmakers for the June 8th press conference. “The lives of the children in New York are more valuable than anything else, and it is important that we protect them and pass Alyssa’s law,” said Turner. Having passed both the Senate and the Assembly, the bill has been sent to Governor Kathy Hochul’s desk, where it awaits her signature. “We know that in incidents like this, even a few minutes can be the difference between lives saved and lives lost,” said Reichlin-Melnick, adding, “No matter where we fall on the political spectrum, we need our kids in school to be safe.” 166

25,000 Gather for Kavod HaTorah HISTORIC ADIREI HATORAH EVENT PROCLAIMS THE GLORY OF OUR YUNGELEIT By Avi Shiff 25,000+, they came out strong, united, and with one goal: to proclaim the glory of our nation’s yungeleit, the Adirei HaTorah. “It was the most uplifting maamad of its kind I’ve ever experienced,” said one attendee. “It was like Simchas Torah, Yom Kippur, and leil Purim in yeshiva all wrapped into one,” said another. Indeed, this was the prevailing sentiment. It was an incredible, truly extraordinary event in every way. For weeks, people had read about the highly anticipated Adirei HaTorah event, and finally – finally – the night was here. The buses – hundreds of them – pulled up from across the tristate, transporting thousands to the event at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Many others came by car, joining the parade of vehicles patiently making their way to the arena this past Sunday night. By about 7 p.m., most of the attendees had arrived, taking in the scene of a sports arena usually bedecked in various sorts of signs and slogans instead bearing statements and refrains expressing Klal Yisroel’s admiration for their yungeleit. “We All Admire Our Yungeleit” was emblazoned across the massive Jumbotron behind the dais. Upon entering the building, attendees were treated to a buffet dinner before entering the arena itself, which was a sight to see. Immediately grabbing the attention of participants was the massive dais, with seating for approximately 500 roshei yeshiva and rabbonim. By the time the program began shortly before 8 p.m., every seat in the arena, including every balcony and concourse, in addition to hundreds of additional seats on the floor, was occupied. Fittingly, the seats on the floor of the arena couldn’t be purchased. They were reserved for yungeleit who have been learning at Beth Medrash Govoha for 12+ years. Appropriately, the best seats in the house were given to those who were being feted this evening, the lomdei Torah who hold up our world. The program began with Tehillim led by Rav Chaim Ginsburg, longtime rosh chaburah at Beth Medrash Govoha. Immediately thereafter, in somewhat of an original approach, the music began, and the crowd sang and danced for several minutes, an absolutely exhilarating beginning to what would be an unforget-

table event. The building practically shook as keyboardist Meir Adler from Eretz Yisroel played the music, accompanied throughout the evening by singers Yanky Daskal, Isaac Honig, Chazzan Srulik Adler, and Dovi Meisels, and the Shira Choir. During the opening remarks delivered by emcee Rabbi Yosef Heinemann, the zekan roshei hayeshivos, Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky, rosh yeshiva of Philadelphia Yeshiva, entered, and the entire crowd broke out into the spontaneous singing of “Yomim.” Rav Aryeh Malkiel Kotler, rosh yeshiva of Bais Medrash Govoha, spoke first, pointing out the simcha that one sees upon entering the botei medrash of the yeshiva, witnessing the joy that yungeleit have in spending their days immersed in limud haTorah. Rav Kotler remarked that he feels that his father, the rosh yeshiva, Rav Shneur Kotler, would have recited the bracha of Chacham Harazim had he seen such a massive crowd of Bnei Torah. While the bracha is generally reserved for when one views an assembly of more than 600,000 Jews, the magnitude of this gathering and its nature, said Rav Kotler, would have compelled the bracha’s recital. Mentioning that the Chazon Ish’s remark that ameilus baTorah is “mehapeich gashmi l’ruchni,” transforming the mundane into the holy, Rav Kotler also said that nowadays we are zoche to “tomchei Torah who know what the Torah does for them. They’re machshiv the Bnei Torah.” Addressing the idea of “Aron nosei es nosav,” a theme referred to several times throughout the night, Rav Kotler said that when a person carries the Aron, he become botul to it and thus becomes uplifted. The Seforno famously points out that the menorah in the Bais Hamikdosh has two sides, one representing chayei olam, our eternal life, and one representing chayei sha’ah, our time spent engaged in worldly pursuits, but both are turned to the ner emtza’i, the middle candle, representing the Torah. Upon the conclusion of Rav Kotler’s remarks, the crowd joined in unison in the singing of Ki Orech Yomim and Ohr Zorua Latzaddik. The energy and passion with each successive song seemed to grow stronger, filling the stadium with an otherworldly ruach. A video presentation was then shown, featuring powerful divrei chizuk from Rav Moshe Hillel Hirsch, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Slabodka in Bnei Brak; Rav Shmuel Kamenetsky, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva of Philadelphia; Rav Yitzchok Sorotzkin, rosh yeshiva of Mesivta of Lakewood; and Rav Elya Ber Wachtfogel, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Gedolah Zichron Moshe of South Fallsburg. In his comments, Rav Sorotzkin said that a “talmid chochom brings a hatzolah (salvation to the world) in all type of ways,” saving Yidden from all sorts of tzaros and tribulations. The talmid chochom has “such a power,” he said. “He saves Yidden, bringing a ruach taharah, a widespread hashpa’ah to the world at large.” “The chiyus of the dor is dependent on you,” said Rav Sorotzkin, addressing the yungeleit. “You are the ones who are the tachlis of the briah.” Following the singing of a slow song, Rabbi Heinemann introduced Rav Dovid Cohen, rosh yeshiva of Yeshivas Chveron, who flew in from Eretz Yisroel to attend the event. The crowd again broke out in singing in honor of Rav Cohen, who humbly stood at the podium until the singing subsided. In an eloquent speech, Rav Cohen, in his characteristic manner, with simplicity and clarity, conveyed the chashivus

of lomdei Torah, expressing the exalted role that they fill each day. A medley of slow songs followed, with the crowd of 20,000 singing Ribono Shel Olam Hut Shoin Rachmanus, V’yiyu Rachamecha, and Machnisei Rachamim. The music then ended, but the crowd didn’t want it to, continuing to sing the third stanza of Machnisei Rachamim without words, a choir of unity and inspiration filling the cavernous stadium. Chazzan Srulik Adler then recited a heart-stirring Keil Malei Rachamim, as silence reigned across the massive crowd. At that point, a Siyum Hashas on Talmud Bavli and Talmud Yerushalmi, learned b’iyun by the yungeleit of Beth Medrash Govoha, was celebrated, with the Hadran being recited by Rav Yisroel Neuman, rosh yeshiva of Beth Medrash Govoha. Following the spirited dancing in honor of the siyum, the keynote drasha was delivered by Rav Ephraim Wachsman, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Meor Yitzchok in Monsey. “We’re here to celebrate this miracle in a world that has gone insane,” he said. “In a world that tries to excise the soul of humanity…rises this song of purity and kedusha.” “We’re here to show our endless gratitude, and our true humility, and to ask you [our yungeleit] for your heilige brachos,” said Rav Wachsman. “Tonight’s evening is a revolution in attitude. To live with the knowledge of Aron nosei es nosav. This has to become the new understanding – it’s really an old understanding – living with it and lifting up the entire briah.” Everything we have, said Rav Wachsman, comes in the zechus of the lomdei Torah. “If we raise kavod haTorah, everything will be mesukan,” he said. “Kids will go to school and not say, ‘That’s the son or daughter of a gvir,’ or even, ‘That’s the son or daughter of a rosh yeshiva, but ‘That’s the son or daughter of one who is learning Torah lishmah,’ and he’s the one who is supporting us all!” “Everybody is sick and tired of the emptiness,” said Rav Wachsman. “And there is one answer to it all: tenu kavod laTorah.” Turning to those who have the zechus of supporting lomdei Torah, he said that one may not have the ability to reach the level of a gadol baTorah in limud haTorah, but “You can be a Pnei Yehoshua and a Rav Akiva Eiger in hachzokas haTorah!” Kabbolas Ohl Malchus Shomayim was then led by Rav Yeruchem Olshin and Rav Dovid Schustal, roshei yeshiva of Beth Medrash Govoha, with Rav Olshin exhorted the crowd to express their gratitude to the Ribono Shel Olam for the miraculous growth of Torah and its support by engaging in additional devotion to Torah learning and avodas Hashem. Maariv concluded the program, led by Rav Sholom Kamenetsky, rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva of Philadelphia. As the thousands made their way to the exits with music filling the arena, the mood was one of kavod and reverence for the yungeleit who devote their every day – and sacrifice so much – to make the study of Torah their occupation, not just uplifting themselves, but enriching their communities and the wider world with the unparalleled power of Torah. It was an evening no one would soon forget, inspired, uplifted, and charged to keep the mission going.

C H A P T E R 14 RECAP: Chaim Simcha tries to prepare his Chanukah shiur, but he keeps being interrupted. He finally gives it up when Zach Ganz arrives to speak with him. After exchanging pleasantries, Zach asks if they are still considering the trip to Poland.

enny Bergman slapped a sheaf of papers onto his desk. He finally had some work to do, but he couldn’t concentrate. Someone had put a nice little cottage on the market, the perfect size and location that usually meant a quick sale. It wouldn’t bring a huge commission, but it was money, and Lenny desperately needed it. Yet every time he opened his files, Rabbi Ginzburg’s story popped back into his head, contrasting with his own black mazel. After weeks of hesitant calls, Lenny’s fourth tenant had finally left him. It would cost the tenant three months of rent to back out of the contract, which was nice. But now only four of Lenny’s eight houses were bringing in revenue, and two were completely destroyed. His bills were stacking up, collectors were getting aggressive, and Lenny didn’t know where to turn.

Meanwhile, Rabbi Ginzburg was sitting on a fortune and doing nothing. The irony was eating him alive. Out of some morbid curiosity, he called Mordechai Gross, a chassidic fellow from out of town. Mordechai was a dealer of rare Jewish artifacts. “Mottel!” Lenny said into the phone. “How you doing? “Lenny, that you? Long time!” “Yeah. How you been? Listen, you know I come from the Lodzer Rebbe, right?” “Sure, sure,” Mottel said warmly. “Chashuve yichus!” “Totally,” Lenny agreed. “Baruch Hashem. So yeah, I heard they just discovered a handwritten copy of one of the Rebbe’s seforim. Nobody’s ever seen this one before. It’s in his own handwriting. Amazing, right?” “Zicher,” Mottel agreed. “If it’s legit.” “I’m pretty sure it is,” Lenny told him.

ally didn’t think I was this bad.” Izzy turned to look at him, then frowned. “You’re flushed,” he said with a hint of concern. He touched Chaim Simcha’s forehead. “And running a fever. You should definitely not be outside right now.” Chaim Simcha unzipped his coat a little and took mental stock. He did feel pretty lousy, come to think of it. “Yeah, let’s cut this short,” he decided. He started back, but Izzy grabbed his shoulder. “No,” Izzy told him. “We’re getting you a cab home.” “My car —” “I’ll take Chana to pick up the car,” Izzy insisted. “You need to get to bed.” “I’m not that sick.” Chaim Simcha muttered. It was bad enough feeling lousy without everyone tiptoeing around him. “I can’t afford to be — I’ve got to go to Poland!” Izzy raised an eyebrow. “Well, I guess we’ll just have to reschedule this illness, then. Have you tried asking the virus nicely?” Chaim Simcha shook his head in frustration. He knew he was being silly. But he couldn’t just abandon the Poland trip for this. After all the craziness to find Zach, and then convince him to come, it seemed unbelievable that a case of the sniffles would defeat all their hard work. “I don’t have time for this,” he protested feebly. “Well, tough noogies.” Chaim Simcha suppressed a painful laugh. “Did you actually say ‘tough noogies’?” “One mature adult to another,” Izzy confirmed, sticking out an arm to hail a cab. The taxi pulled over, and the two of them hopped in the back. The driver, an overweight man with a mustache and cap, turned around to face them. “Where to, fellas?” Izzy gave the address, and they settled into their seats. “I have to admit,” Izzy continued, staring reflectively out the window, “it’s a crazy coincidence, you getting sick just now.” “Coincidence,” Chaim Simcha repeated. His face lit up suddenly. “Did I ever tell you what the Malbim says about coincidences?” He coughed into his arm and his vision swam. “Hmm?” Chaim Simcha was suddenly cold again. He zipped his coat back up to the neck before continuing. “When Rus went out to the field to pick matnos aniyim, she ‘just happened’ to go to Boaz’ field. It was a mikre. Coincidence.” He was shaking a little now from the fever. Izzy had been right about the cab. He needed to get to bed. “So the Malbim says that mikre is the Torah’s word for something so important, Shamayim couldn’t wait for it to happen naturally. It had to happen, and it had to happen now, so Hashem made a shtickel miracle. That’s why we have coincidences.” “Here we are,” the cabbie announced as he pulled into Chaim Simcha’s driveway. “That’s twelve fifty” “Keep the meter running, please,” Izzy instructed. “I’m coming back in a minute.” Just before Izzy left to pick up his car, Chaim Simcha patted him on the arm and smiled. “Thanks for reminding me that this isn’t a mistake. We’ll get that manuscript. I’m just supposed to be sick while we do it, for some reason…” TO BE CONTINUED...

CHAPTER

THREE

Recap: Father Miguel, with a fire burning from within, insists on speaking to Sebastian in seclusion so he could wear him down until he converts. Sebastian, alone in isolation, hears several sets of footsteps approaching his cell.

T

he key turned in the lock, and the door swung open. Sebastian was momentarily blinded by the weak torchlight in the corridor, which appeared as bright as the noonday sun in comparison to the gloom of his cell. When his eyes adjusted to the light, he discerned a corporal and two guards in full uniform. “Come with us, Dominguez,” said the corporal. “Where are you taking me?” asked Sebastian. “Come of your own will, or we will drag you there. No talking.” “Am I going to be tortured?” One of the guards snickered, and the corporal laughed. “Yes, Dominguez,” he said. “You are about to be tortured, but not in the way you think.” He laughed again, then he grew serious. “No more talking, I mean it. Not a single word. You will have plenty of opportunity to talk later.” When they emerged into the courtyard, Sebastian recoiled from the bright light and the sudden blast of heat. He had felt nothing like it for over a year. From the upper floors of the monastery, the sounds of monks and friars chanting in their chapels floated down to him. They crossed the courtyard and entered another passageway. That led to a single door at the end. The door was slightly ajar. The corporal knocked on the door. Hearing a guttural grunt from inside, he opened the door. “Bring in the prisoner,” he said to the guards.

The guards led Sebastian into the center of the room and left him there. Sebastian surveyed the room. There were oil lamps on the walls. On a table in the center of the room were an earthenware jug, two glasses and a towel. A straight-backed chair stood on either side of the table. In the corner stood a chamber pot, a strange sight to find in what seemed like some kind of office. An old Dominican friar stood against the far wall. He was bent over, and his face was partially obscured by the cowl of his cassock. “Is everything to your satisfaction, Good Father?” asked the corporal. The old friar grunted and nodded. “Do you need anything else?” The old friar grunted again and shook his head. “I’ve brought you a chamber pot as you requested,” said the corporal, “in case this takes a long time.” The old friar growled impatiently. The corporal turned to Sebastian. “Do not even think about trying to escape. There is no way out of here but the passageway, and there are armed guards posted at the door. This is Father Miguel Gutierrez, an emissary of the Holy Office of the Inquisition in Madrid. You will, of course, give him your complete cooperation. He is a holy hermit who has taken a vow of silence, but he has come to speak with you, so you can well imagine how —” The old friar could contain himself no more. He let out a piercing howl of frustration and motioned with both hands for the corporal and his men to get out. When they hesitated, he hurled his heavy walking stick in their direction.

The guards retreated toward the passageway, but even before they were out of the room, the old friar had dismissed them from his mind and turned his attention to Sebastian. “I feel the fires of Purgatory raging around you,” he screamed at Sebastian, and he reeled back with his forearm raised across his brow as if to shield himself from the searing heat. “I smell the sulfurous breath of the Devil hanging over your head like a stinking cloud. Repent! Get on your knees and plead for forgiveness, you foolish, wayward child!” After the door closed, the old friar bent down to pick up his fallen stick. Then he whirled around, lifted his stick high in the air and screamed, “Repent, you sinner! Repent right now before the Devil drags your immortal soul into the fires of Purgatory.” Then the old friar fell silent and remained standing still, his back bent over grotesquely, his staff gripped in his right hand, his eyes riveted to the ground. Sebastian stared in amazement at the frozen figure of the old friar. Who was this gargoyle of a man? What did he want? The old friar breathed a long sigh. He uncoiled his back, straightened his shoulders, and rose to his full height, which was considerable. He threw back the cowl from his head and relaxed the contorted muscles of his face. Except for his white stringy hair and beard, the layers of age and decrepitude seemed to fall away from him. He turned and looked Sebastian full in the face. Sebastian gasped and clutched at his throat. The monk had suddenly taken on a strong resemblance to one of the cavaliers

who had attended his father loyally for many years. “Gonzalo?” he breathed. “Gonzalo Sanchez? Is it really you?” “It is I, Don Sebastian. I have come to liberate you from this place.” “I cannot believe it! Oh, praise the Almighty.” He fell to his knees and bowed his head. “Oh, thank you, Merciful Lord. Thank you for answering my prayers.” “I think you should stand up, Don Sebastian,” Gonzalo remarked. “I don’t think that Jews pray on their knees.” Sebastian scrambled to his feet. “My father, Gonzalo. What about my father? Do you have any news of my father? Is my father still alive?” Gonzalo shook his head. “He gave up his soul a month ago in Madrid. He died a hero’s death.” “Did you speak to him at the end?” “Yes, I did.” “Tell me about his last moments. Please. I want to hear every word.” “There is no time to talk now, Don Sebastian. We have to get out of here. There will be time to talk later if the Almighty performs a miracle and we can get away safely.” “Of course, Gonzalo, but tell me one thing. Were his thoughts about me at the end? Was he worried for me?” Gonzalo shook his head. “I lied to him. I told him that you had escaped and had already sailed safely from Valencia. He was relieved.” Sebastian nodded gravely. “You did the right thing. He did not need to be distracted by worries about the safety of his family when he was about to return his soul to its Creator. So tell me, Gonzalo, what is the plan? How do you intend to get me out of here?”

“YES, DOMINGUEZ,” HE SAID. “YOU ARE ABOUT TO BE TORTURED, BUT NOT IN THE WAY YOU THINK.”

HE REMAINED HUNCHED OVER AND CONTORTED, A BITTER, ILLTEMPERED OLD FRIAR ON THE EDGE OF HYSTERIA AND MADNESS. “Just follow my lead, Don Sebastian. Play your role, and I will play mine. I am the holy hermit come to save your immortal soul, and you are the intransigent heretic who stubbornly refuses to see the light of truth. I scream and shout and cajole, and you insist that you are a good Christian and that to the best of your knowledge, everyone in your family is a devout, faithful child of the Church.” “All right.” “Ask me no questions. I will tell you what you need to know when you need to know it. Understood?” “Yes.” “Good. Now we’ve been through our first session, and I have not succeeded. Remain standing near the table. Do not sit down. Let your head hang onto your chest. I will go out for a while to vent my frustrations, but I will be back soon.” Gonzalo took a deep breath and curled himself back into the contorted figure of the old friar. His eyes regained their hint of madness, and his face once again presented the ravages of age and distemper. He grabbed his walking stick, stamped out of the room, and headed down the passageway. He banged on the door at the far end with his stick, and the corporal opened it. The two guards stood right behind him. “Are you finished, Father Miguel?” asked the corporal. The old friar glared at him as if he had lost his mind. Then he shook his head, partly to signal that he was absolutely not finished and partly in wonderment at the lunacy of the corporal who could even ask such a question. He brandished his stick at the men, and they fell back. 190

HE RANTED AND RAVED WITHOUT UTTERING A WORD, STAMPING ON THE GROUND AND SWINGING HIS STICK AT THE DEMONS THAT SURROUNDED HIM. Grunting and growling, the old friar stamped on the ground and marched around the courtyard in no particular pattern, muttering wordlessly to himself and waving his stick at unseen demons that surrounded him. When he calmed down a bit, he stopped beside his donkey and patted its flank. Then he glared at the guards again, motioned to them with his stick to open the door, and disappeared down the passageway. When he came back into the interrogation room, Sebastian was exactly where he had left him, standing perfectly still with his head slumped on his chest. This time, Gonzalo did not uncoil himself or relax his facial features for Sebastian’s benefit. He remained hunched over and contorted, a bitter, ill-tempered old friar on the edge of hysteria and madness. “If you don’t mind, Don Sebastian,” said Gonzalo, “I will remain in character until we are out of here. I’ve shown you who I am; now I must play my role so completely so that it becomes my identity. Every word I speak to you as an old friend takes me away from the authenticity of my impersonation, so I will say as little as possible.” “I understand.” “Here is the plan. The warden and his guards know me as a holy hermit. They know that I have made a vow of silence and that I do not speak to them. When I give you the signal, you will put on my cassock, get on my donkey and ride out of the monastery. You’ll find bread and money in the pockets.” Sebastian gave him a puzzled look. “Just like that?” “Just like that.” 192

Sebastian took a deep breath. “I think you were right. It will take a miracle for this plan to succeed.” “No, it will not. What it will take is flawless execution. We will do it, don’t worry. Do you know the pond behind the Coreillas farm?” “Yes, I do. It is not far from here.” “A fast horse is tethered there in a stand of tall pines. Set the donkey loose, and take the horse. On the road going west toward Saragossa, near a large dead oak split by lightning, there is a small trail that heads into the forest. Leave me a sign by the roadside, then take the trail. It will lead you to an abandoned cabin high on a hillside.” Sebastian nodded. “I know the place.” “Good. I will meet you there. Right now, I think I need another break from this grueling session we are having. I think I will go outside for some fresh air.” When the old friar reappeared in the courtyard, the guards immediately stepped back to give him room for his manic shenanigans, and he did not disappoint them. This time he had his cowl pulled well over his head so that only his febrile eyes and the wispy white strands of his beard showed from the shadows within. Once again, he ranted and raved without uttering a word, stamping on the ground and swinging his stick at the demons that surrounded him. At last, he stopped at the gate to the outside and pointed. The corporal came running. “What do want, Father Miguel?” he asked. The old friar did not even turn to look at him. He just stared at the gate and pointed. “Do you want me to open the gate, good father?” The old friar tapped on the gate with his stick and waited. “As you wish, good father,” said the corporal. He extracted a key from his pocket and opened the gate. The old friar grunted again and walked out into the bright sunlight. He marched off in the direction of the city and disappeared around a bend in the road. The corporal stared after his receding back and shrugged his shoulders. To be continued…

THINGS THATGO ROUND BY:

SHEVY

HOLLANDER

The outdoor recreation scene has completely changed over recent years. From trikes, scooters, bikes and those coveted “speed bikes” that really let their riders fly, the wheels our kids love have evolved to include a plethora of new riding toys, chargers included. But it’s not child’s play, and it shouldn’t be, without a heap of safety precautions. Here we present the deal on all things electric on wheels.

WHAT’S IN THE NAME? The Segway was named for the phonetic spelling of segue to allude to the smooth transition Segways would do as it takes individuals on a ride.

THE INTENT Not all fun and games, the Segway was invented as a personal transporter in 2001. Its founders envisioned a multi-million-dollar industry that would spur a revolution in how people would make their way through busy city streets. Dean Kamen, its inventor, liked to say that you don’t need a 4,000-pound car to move a 150-pound person one mile. But his vision for the Segway Personal Transporters never quite panned out in the way he hoped.

BURYING A DREAM In 2020, the company discontinued the production of the original model — the Segway Personal Transporter. With its high price tag, the Segway PT only amounted to 1.5% of their sales at that point.

SAFETY FIRST Parents should be mindful that when giving their child control of a Segway, they’re essentially putting a motor vehicle in their child’s hands, and safety precautions are a must.

OOPS! Some high-profile riders fell in the early years of Segway. In 2003, then-President Bush took a fall during a vacation at his parents’ summer home in Maine. Unfortunately for Bush (and for Segway), the image made its way to the media, and the incident was widely reported. Tragically, a fatal Segway accident involved the owner of Segway Corporation, who died after he accidently fell off a 30-foot cliff while riding a Segway scooter.

A TOURIST ATTRACTION Segways gained popularity in tours across the world as a convenient open-air method of transportation while taking in sights and scenes. Every famous city (in which Segways are legal, and then some!) today sports vendors offering tours on Segway.

• Riders should be fully protected, and protection starts with a high-quality helmet. Additional protection includes knee and elbow padding, wrist guards, and high-visibility reflectors and lights for use in low visibility. • Riders must practice prior to gaining full control over the machine. • When riding, stick to open areas, avoid crowded places, and do not weave around pedestrians. • Never ride on the road or near vehicular traffic of any kind. • No shtick. Both feet must be firmly planted on the board, and the machine must be maneuvered with both hands. Any personal items a rider wishes to carry should be in a backpack or cargo holder. A Segway should never be ridden backward, and short stops or quick turns can end in disaster. • The right pace to keep is a fast walking pace. Don’t speed on Segways. • Segways are not all-terrain vehicles. Keep to solid, even ground, preferably paved surfaces.

STAY ON YOUR TURF Both hoverboards and Segways may not legally be operated on sidewalks, streets, bridges, public walkways or in parks anywhere in the State of New York, since they fall under the categories of motorized vehicles under NYS Motor Vehicle Law, yet cannot be registered.

A MESSAGE FROM HATZOLOH At Hatzoloh, we’ve been dealing with accidents both in Rockland County and in NYC involving all types of motorized riding machines. Here are some safety tips from Joshua Hans, one of the Hatzoloh Coordinators.

222

•

First off, we very much encourage parents to be very cautious and make an informed decision when getting these riding toys for their children. Make sure your child is mature enough and has the physical adeptness to drive very carefully and pay attention to their surroundings.

•

We cannot stress this enough, but helmets must be worn any time a bicycle or scooter is ridden, and especially so with these faster-moving motorized bikes and Segways. Helmets literally save lives. It is mandatory to wear one; it is simply sakanas nefashos to ride a bike without a helmet. Especially in the case of riding machines that operate at high speeds, a bump on the sidewalk can cause serious injuries. Responding to calls, it is chilling to see the difference between a rider who was protected by a helmet that took the hit and left the rider only with a little bruise, and a rider who, chas v’shalom, rode unprotected and unfortunately had his head take the fall, requiring complicated medical procedures, or chas v’shalom, worse.

•

Another point: Riders must be mindful that riding at high speeds means that it is harder to stop. We’ve responded to calls in which pedestrians were injured when hit by an electric bike, and they were no simple matter. Riders should be fully focused on the paths, ride at safe speeds, and be super careful to avoid crowded areas and people so that they have enough time to stop safely.

•

Additionally, if anyone is riding a bike at night, it is crucial to wear reflective clothes and have the proper lights mounted.

WHAT’S IN THE NAME? The reason for the name is that its riders look like they’re floating. But many critics denounced the name, saying, “How can they be called hoverboards if they don’t actually hover?” and “If it has wheels, it’s not a hoverboard!” If the term bothers you enough, you can stick to the more generic “self-balancing scooter.” But would a hoverboard by any other name be as enticing?

CAN I REALLY FLOAT ON AIR? Real hoverboards that lift off the ground (or water!) actually do exist; they’re just not yet widely accessible. These include hoverboards with magnetics, and those with propellers that push air downward, making the users move almost like they’d have a helicopter below their feet. Give it another little bit of time…

SAFETY FIRST Hoverboards have a reputation of charging-related fires, though faulty models have been recalled from the market and the issue has been largely mitigated. Here are some tips:

SLOWER BUT SAFER Compared to Segways, hoverboards operate at lower speeds, making them a safer choice, but some find it harder to learn how to balance them.

• Use batteries from a reputable brand. • The lithium-ion batteries that hoverboards use can explode if overcharged. Therefore, hoverboards should never be charged overnight, and some even avoid bringing them to a full charge. • Hoverboards should be kept at moderate temperature conditions before charging to avoid any temperature-related issues with the batteries. • Since its batteries are sensitive to ruptures, if a hoverboard crashes or runs into a hard object, make sure to test it before getting on again. As a motor vehicle, hoverboard use requires care and additional safety precautions. • Riders should be fully protected, and protection starts with a high-quality helmet. Additional protection includes knee and elbow badding, wrist guards, and high-visibility reflectors and lights for use in low visibility. • Riders must practice prior to gaining full control over the machine. • When riding, stick to open areas, avoid crowded places, and do not weave around pedestrians. • Never ride on the road or near vehicular traffic of any kind.

D N A S E K I E-B S R E T O O C S E Electric scooters and bikes with electric assist are becoming a common sight on city streets. And while electric bikes have been around for over 20 years, cyclists have only gotten more fond of them over the years. Here are some fun facts about them: In 2021, the e-Bike was most popular in the states of Washington, Colorado, Delaware, Minnesota, California, Massachusetts and Oregon. E-bikes, as opposed to what are considered the “lazy vehicles” — Segways and e-scooters — allow for a workout, without draining all the rider’s energy The most popular e-Bikes are pedal-assisted electronic bikes. While e-bikes and e-scooters are not allowed on New York State sidewalks, they are allowed to be used on some of the state’s streets and highways. Bicycles with electric assist do not fall into the motorcycle category and therefore do not require registration.

RIDING HIGH He surrendered two wheels and traded in his taxi for a motorcycle. Turns out, less is indeed more when getting around our busy town BY: Y. BLOOMING

There was a time, and this is 100% true according to historians, that Monsey folks would boast to their city brethren about how life in Monsey meant not dealing with traffic. But those days have long since gone the way of the station wagon, car phones, and gas prices that don’t require a call to your bank before pumping. avriel Chmedi worked as a taxi driver in Monsey a couple of years ago, and every time he sat in traffic, the same thought crossed his mind: What if I can get around town without this physically and emotionally draining scourge of traffic? While political figures and activists were discussing realistic and unrealistic grand plans to alleviate traffic concerns, he set his sights on controlling what he could and contributing in a simple, but 234

meaningful, way. Gavriel decided to start a messenger service that would utilize a motorcycle instead of a car to weave around traffic and arrive at destinations in a fraction of the time. Gavriel was not a licensed motorcycle driver at the time, but he had some experience riding these machines and got started on training for the job. Once he received his license, he launched his new venture, giving it the straightforward, says-it-all name Express Delivery.

Pardon my ignorance, but where do you keep the packages you deliver? Motorcycles are kind of small. Yes, and you can’t just hang a bag from your handle. I put up a large box behind my seat that is about two feet by two feet, and it holds a lot more than you would think. Who are your typical clients, and what deliveries do they assign to you? Most of my clients, as of now, are the popular takeout establishments around town (Leil Shishi, Chick ‘n Chuck, Manche Pani, etc.) and other businesses offering delivery service while it doesn’t make economic sense for them to own and operate a vehicle of their own. The fact that my little vehicle can weave through traffic and get anywhere in Monsey as if there were no cars on the road means not only that orders are delivered faster, but also that the service is much more affordable as I can execute many more deliveries in an hour.

How about non-business deliveries? We are definitely growing in that area as more people hear about us and receive positive word-of-mouth references. Oftentimes, these jobs include Erev Shabbos deliveries before a simcha, picking up something from a store for a client, sending food to a family member, and other errands like these.

Were there any notable delivery requests over your time in business? For the most part, I’m hired to do the kinds of things that people would run out and do themselves, if only they could. One thing that has come up more than you would expect is bringing phone chargers to my clients. In today’s day and age, you’re left handicapped if your phone runs out of juice, and I can be there rather quickly to save the day. The truth is that what he began doing commercially has already proven itself for many years in the more critical world of hatzalas nefashos. In Eretz Yisroel, the sight of Hatzalah and Zaka volunteers on mopeds — motorcycles are those with stronger engines — has sadly been common whenever the country experienced a tragedy or attack. I’m not sure why this concept hasn’t taken off here in our area (files idea away for another potential column), but the economical and efficient premise behind it surely holds true universally. Now during summertime, or what our kids consider bike-time, we caught up with Gavriel to hear about his occupation and roll through his journey and this ambitious project.

Do local drivers treat motorcyclists well on the road? People try to be nice, but because motorcycles aren’t so common in this neighborhood, drivers sometimes don’t know to be on the lookout for one in their blind spots or understand how to share the road well. I’m a safe driver, and I’m always extra cautious because of this.

Speaking of safety, others would describe your work as hazardous. Do you and your family see it that way? Look, this is my parnassah, and many jobs entail some risk. I am a good driver, wear a helmet, don’t drive at high speeds, and do all of my hishtadlus to protect myself.

How long does the average delivery take to complete? Shorter than you imagine… Except for those on the outskirts of Monsey, it generally takes me less than ten minutes to get from the point of origin to the destination. No car can come close to matching that. June 15, 2022

235

WHILE POLITICAL FIGURES AND ACTIVISTS WERE DISCUSSING REALISTIC AND UNREALISTIC GRAND PLANS TO ALLEVIATE TRAFFIC CONCERNS, HE SET HIS SIGHTS ON CONTROLLING WHAT HE COULD AND CONTRIBUTING IN A SIMPLE, BUT MEANINGFUL, WAY.

How many deliveries can you do in a day? I would say about 30 to 45 is the norm. I can squeeze in more, of course, during busy seasons. What are those busy seasons? Before Purim is undoubtedly the busiest. I had one client who asked me to deliver 100 small mishloach manos packages to people he works with. It was exciting to zoom through the list.

Do you find yourself enjoying your job as you drive around, or is that thrill gone by now? I definitely do. It’s almost like riding a bicycle where just rolling along is fun by itself. Of course, there’s other work besides just the driving, and there will be more of that as the business grows, but this is fun!

What are your plans going forward? Right now I am doing everything myself. But as demand continues to grow, I hope to acquire more motorcycles and hire additional drivers. Monsey is a very large community, baruch Hashem, and there is very much untapped need for quick messenger and delivery services. I think I’ve stumbled upon a great solution. 236

WATCH YOUR STEP

“No, don’t go down these steps,” my husband called to me. “We need to exit the building on this floor.” Ever the obedient wife, I swerved around, one foot extended in midair. Big mistake! Immediately, I felt my other ankle twist in an unnatural way. It was a Friday night, and we were just beginning our 90-minute walk home from my husband’s yeshivah, almost all uphill. We had been looking forward to this walk for weeks. Our route would bring us among the throngs of residents from Meah She’arim in their Shabbos garb. Men in their shiny striped coats, women bedecked in creative head coverings, and children chasing one another in the carless roads. A bit further on we would pass yeshivah bachurim on their way to their host families, and still later we would get to listen to the strains of zemiros wafting out of homes and into the summer air. If we were especially lucky, we would meet friends and exchange a “gut Shabbos” and bits of news. Would we miss this because of a sprained ankle? We knew a family who lived in the area of the yeshivah, but their apartment was on the fifth floor. A few moments passed, and the pain subsided somewhat. Gingerly, I embarked on our journey. Watching the human scenery, my mind was distracted from my injury. Street after street, we continued toward our home. When we reached the top of the hill leading to our address, however, my leg froze in a cramp. I tried to massage it, but with no success. Then I recalled my daughter telling me to bite the inside of the lip to relieve a sudden cramp. It worked! As I limped into our apartment, it was surprisingly not my ankle that cried out — it was my knee. Hopping on one foot, I collapsed into the nearest chair, convinced that after a night’s sleep, I wouldn’t even re-

member which foot I had turned. I was wrong. My left knee didn’t look swollen, but I definitely felt it. Standing on it was painful, and it felt unable to support my weight. To ensure that I would stay off my feet, Hashem soon sent me a bad cold that kept me shivering under my blankets. Rest was just what the doctor ordered, and within a week the pain in my leg was downgraded to a steady ache. When my cold snaked its way out of my body, I was anxious to get back to normal life: shopping, shiurim, cooking, running errands and laundry. I was sure the dull ache in my knee would soon be relegated to a dull memory. Two weeks passed, and I pushed on with my routine. But instead of abating, the ache intensified. My husband insisted that I see my GP. After his examination, he informed me that without an MRI he couldn’t know what actually happened to my knee, but it didn’t really matter. Whatever it was, it had one solution: physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles around the knee. He referred me to an orthopedist for more specific treatment. Pain was my constant companion, and sleep was a visitor that didn’t stay too long. I scheduled the earliest appointment available, in two weeks’ time. On the appointed day, I sat in the waiting area and imagined that with a magic wand, the orthopedist would surely make my knee right again. Instead, the doctor turned

my leg this way and that, eliciting a few healthy screams. Then he pronounced his verdict: It was likely a torn meniscus. Exactly where and how bad the tear was would need an MRI. In the meantime, no stairs, no walking on inclines or downslopes, no protracted standing or sitting; no bending down to pick up things; no carrying weights. I was almost under house arrest. What I was instructed to do was use a stationary bicycle for half an hour each day, as well as apply an ice pack several times a day to reduce internal swelling. The orthopedist was confident that if I followed his instructions, I would be walking the path to recovery. We didn’t own a stationary bicycle, so the question was whether to buy or rent one. Israeli apartments are small, and any additional furnishings take up very precious space. When discussing the pros and cons with my husband, he suggested that we post on our local email group, asking if someone had one that they wanted to sell or rent. An hour later the phone rang. “I saw your post on the email group. I run an exercise club, and I just purchased a new stationary bike. The old one is in good working condition, and it is in the lobby of my building. Whenever it is convenient for you, go take a look, and if you want it you can have it for 15 shekels (about $5).” The lowest price that I had seen thus far was still over a thousand shekels, and even renting one would cost a few hundred shekels a month. Additionally, the club the seller mentioned is located across the street from my building. I couldn’t believe the siyata d’Shmaya of finding a solution practically at our doorstep. I might have taken a misstep, but Hashem soon pointed us in the right direction. With the Heavenly Hand of Help supporting me, I felt that it wouldn’t be long before my husband and I would once again be off on a Friday night escapade, walking up and down the picturesque streets of Yerushalayim.

It’s cheaper than a taxi and (often) quicker than a car. It’s a fun way to get around and get some exercise, and it’s great for the environment. Some use it to commute and actually get places, and others ride it to see the sights of the City That Never Sleeps… When you’re in or around NYC, consider picking up a public bike. Pedal on for more info on Citi Bikes, New York City’s official bike-share program.

One year’s membership of Citi Bike costs less than two monthly subway passes. A Citi Bike day pass can be purchased even without a smartphone by using the kiosks located at Citi Bike stations.

The Citi Bike concept was received warmly by the NYC public. When memberships went on sale several weeks before the program launched, 5,000 memberships sold out within 30 hours.

Hangzhou, China, boasts the world’s largest bike-share program.

Lyft acquired Citi Bike in 2018.

Since its start, NYC Citi Bike has more than quadrupled its fleet, increasing from 6,000 bikes to 24,500 bikes — and counting.

In 2015, Citi Bike accommodated 10 million trips – breaking the record for annual bike-share ridership in all bike-share programs in the Western hemisphere besides Velib in Paris. THE NUMBERS ARE RIDING UP 2021 stats: • 800,000 new Citi Bike riders • 13.6 million rides taken • 28 million miles biked

Suggested Scenic Routes BROOKLYN BRIDGE PARK Start at the Old Fulton Street station under the Brooklyn Bridge, ride through the park from Pier 1 to Pier 6, and dock at Atlantic Avenue & Furman Street, or turn around for a round trip. Each way should take some 10 minutes.

HUDSON RIVER GREENWAY Enjoy the 11-mile bike route that runs alongside the Hudson River from Battery Park through the Bronx. There are some 20 stations in the area, so bikes can be picked up and dropped off at any point. Aside from the gorgeous water views, you can check out some attractions on the way: The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum; 9/11 Memorial and Museum; Chelsea Piers and more. If you plan to stop for some sightseeing, purchase the daily pass so you can dock and rerent a bike as you wish throughout the day.

BROOKLYN WATERFRONT GREENWAY Some 18 miles of the planned 26-mile landscaped route for pedestrians and cyclists along the Brooklyn waterfront are already complete. Pick up a bike at Kent Avenue and N. 7th Street (or at a nearby station) and ride south along Kent Avenue. You can choose to dock at Brooklyn Bridge Park or make a U-turn and come back.

OTHER FUN ROUTES INCLUDE CENTRAL PARK, THE EAST RIVER GREENWAY AND THE JERSEY CITY WATERFRONT.

NEW E-BIKES FOR NYC On May 5, 2022, Lyft began to introduce 1,500 brand-new e-bikes to the Citi Bike fleet. The “sleek” new e-bikes are equipped with LED screens and twice the battery capacity. The bikes also have speakers that give riders audio and video instructions for unlocking and parking. “The new bikes will speed up faster than the existing 5,000-bike e-bike fleet run by Lyft,” a company spokesman said, “and travel 55 to 60 miles before losing battery.” In 2021, 32% of NYC Citi Bike rides were taken on e-bikes, even though e-bikes account for only 25% of the fleet. As the Lyft General Manager of Citi Bike says, “E-bikes have become the first choice of Citi Bike riders.” The new high-tech bikes are rolling out gradually, with planned access to all riders by fall 2022.

A RIDE THROUGH BIKE SHARING HISTORY Rolling It Out The first person to work out a public bike-share program was Luud Schimmelpennink, in 1960s Amsterdam. He painted some bicycles white and left them out for free public use. Surprisingly, it was not a business venture, but his display of concern about pollution and the growing number of cars in the city. Most of the bikes were stolen or vandalized. Many were even confiscated by the police. On Wheels Some twenty years later, two designers in Copenhagen, Wessung and Sadolin, jumped on the idea and structured it to defy the obstacles met in Amsterdam.

They placed the bikes in fixed docks, and riders had to deposit money to unlock them. Riders would get back their money after returning the bikes. Public and private funding helped this program quickly get off the ground. Getting a Handle on the Obstacles The next big step for bike sharing took place in Rennes, France, in 1998. It tackled one of the biggest problems of the system: anonymity. Riders had to swipe a card through the dock’s magnetic card reader. Riders now had a new level of liability, even though the bikes were still free.

PCS /AGUDATH ISRAEL, IS LAUNCHING THE 11TH COHORT OF THEIR SOFTWARE AND WEB DEVELOPMENT COURSE, WITH AN OPTION TO EARN A BS IN COMPUTER PROGRAMMING AND TECHNOLOGY. Classes for men and women | Internships and partial scholarships available | Remote option available

Q AND A WITH BARUCH GREENBERG, COURSE GRADUATE Please tell us about your current programing job. I work at a large retail company in New York City. I am part of a team that is responsible for developing and maintaining the internal applications of the company, including a very complex web application that is used to enter information into the company’s website. How did the PCS Software and Web Development Course prepare you for your career? The PCS Course covered topics and languages that are the most relevant in today’s market. I also learned many of the core concepts of programming, which made it relatively easy to pick up other programming languages that are used at my job. Furthermore, PCS did not just focus on Software and Web development skills, they taught a broad range of skills that were helpful for me to develop my career. There were communica-

tion classes focusing on networking, as well as interview preparation classes, which played a tremendous role in ultimately landing my job.

Q: Why is it important to receive proper training from industry experts before entering this field?

PCS also has a special department devoted to helping with internships and job placement. Because they have long-standing connections with top companies, PCS maintains a very high placement rate.

If one does not get proper training, certain core concepts that are crucial to the success of the code can be missed. Also, proper training is important to learn code-cleanliness and best practices, which, in the long run, can make a huge difference in the code’s maintainability.

Is software and web development currently a lucrative field to enter? It is a very lucrative field. It is a necessity for many companies and is a core factor to their success and their ability to compete. Q: For whom would you recommend this field? I recommend this field for anyone who enjoys creativity and problem-solving and is detailoriented. Although math is not a central part of programming, having a “math brain” is somewhat important.

But more importantly, having a real teacher in a real classroom is what makes a person really succeed. This is one of those fields which “you don’t know it until you do it.” PCS also has special labs and lab instructors who help with hands-on practice and has resources available for students to come and practice on their own. Going in with this type of “hands-on” approach brings a person to true success in this field. This past Thursday, June 9, 2022, the Orthodox Jewish Public Affairs Council (OJPAC) hosted its Annual Policy Conference and Appreciation Event in Westchester, NY. The mission of OJPAC is to counter the defamation of the Orthodox Jewish Community and to champion civil rights and civil liberties. The annual event gives an opportunity for community leaders, activists, elected officials, and organization supporters to meet and greet for policy discussions and an evening of appreciation. Guests came from Sullivan, Orange, and Rockland counties; Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Long Island, and Bergen and Ocean, New Jersey. The event was led by OJPAC co-founders Aron Spielman, Mayer Berger, and Yossi Gestetner. The event honored people in five categories: Senior Askan Award; given this year to Rabbi Yeruchim Silber of Agudas Israel and to Rabbi Yakov Menken of the Coalition for Jewish Values. Askan in Government Award; Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein and Rockland County Legislator Aron Wieder. Askan in Media; Shimon Rolnitzky of Kol Mavaser and Der Gluck. Organizational Askan Award; Rabbi Israel Kahan of Oyzrim and of the Anti-Defamation League. Independent Askan Award; Jeff Ballabon and Lee Brewer. The event’s sponsor was Wit Strategies, led by philanthropists Binyomin Weisz of Monsey and Benjamin (Volvi) Silberstein of Kiryas Joel.
